Welcome to the Royal Welsh Show, 2011. We are going to sue you the

:00:32.:00:36.

best of it from a phenomenal Lancaster bomber to fanciful

:00:36.:00:42.

pigeons. Chris Jones was given the opportunity of exhibiting an animal

:00:42.:00:47.

here for the first time. Royal Welsh Show is the largest display a

:00:47.:00:52.

sheep breeds in the world. There are people in this ring who have

:00:52.:00:58.

been doing it for decades. I are more into scaly reptiles, but I am

:00:58.:01:03.

going to be competing against the best of them, and they are going to

:01:03.:01:13.
:01:13.:01:17.

be trusting me to look as if I know Here we are in the middle of

:01:17.:01:23.

Camaerthenshire, and I am going to learn how to Shaun the Sheep. How

:01:23.:01:27.

long have you guys been showing sheep? Six or seven years. How many

:01:27.:01:37.

have you done this year? 32. I am keen to get on. What is the first

:01:37.:01:45.

task of the day? Finish up that cup of tea then out to be shared. --

:01:45.:01:51.

out to the shed. Do not tell me that I have to do this. You are

:01:51.:01:56.

just concentrating on corporate training today. I am used to snakes

:01:56.:02:01.

and these have got legs, and I am not sure that I can handle that! Is

:02:01.:02:07.

he going to be shown? He is all there. Tell me, I am showing this

:02:07.:02:17.

sheep? No, that one there. Thank goodness. Hello. A little black one.

:02:17.:02:21.

You don't look like you're going to be half as much trouble. I am I

:02:21.:02:30.

wrong? Yes! Is he a better than 4? I am afraid so! This is so much

:02:30.:02:35.

harder than it looks when you see the professionals doing yet. You

:02:35.:02:45.
:02:45.:02:49.

wouldn't imagine that the sheep We might be winning. He is then OK,

:02:49.:02:59.
:02:59.:03:03.

The shore is well under way and I am getting very nervous. You will

:03:03.:03:08.

be fine, I am sure of it. She is looking fantastic. She is the best

:03:08.:03:13.

one that we have bred, so look after her! You trust me with your

:03:14.:03:22.

best sheep? Why not? No pressure, then! A what is this? This is your

:03:22.:03:28.

shirt and tie. Just to enjoy every minute out there, and good luck.

:03:28.:03:33.

Thank you very much. Horse has an extraordinary animals that have

:03:33.:03:38.

been trained and domesticated for millennia. At the Royal Welsh Show

:03:38.:03:43.

you can see some of the best show losses in the country. Training a

:03:43.:03:46.

racehorse is a different arc to training a horse for the shoring

:03:46.:03:52.

and this year, we have introduced a retraining the racecourse class for

:03:52.:03:58.

the very first time. Rachel Thomas from Bridgend has been competing in

:03:59.:04:06.

retraining the racecourse classes in shows for a few years now. This

:04:06.:04:12.

retraining the racecourse it's a new competition - how does it work?

:04:12.:04:17.

About 4,000 horses, to of training, and need to find another job. Some

:04:17.:04:20.

are not suitable to continue in their career but many are very

:04:20.:04:25.

useful. And it is all about retraining the racecourse, after

:04:25.:04:31.

the track, to turn it into a horse that can do another job. This class

:04:31.:04:37.

is aimed at a show was, trying to turn it into a show loss. What

:04:37.:04:45.

other judges looking for? Basically initial loss class, a horse that is

:04:46.:04:51.

correct in its composition. Anything you would look for an a

:04:51.:04:56.

stand-up show was class, any show anywhere, and today the judge will

:04:56.:05:01.

ride the exhibits and he has to have a feel for that and that will

:05:01.:05:06.

feed into the final were the result. This is a beautiful horse, what is

:05:06.:05:10.

his racing history? He ran on the flat and he was useless, to be

:05:10.:05:16.

honest. He came last on all but one occasion. As is the case with

:05:16.:05:21.

horses that have not been any good they get overlooked and ended the

:05:21.:05:26.

not very good homes. We found them on a Welsh hillside and he was very

:05:26.:05:33.

thin. So we basically felt sorry for them. Week retrained and to go

:05:34.:05:40.

into a better home and have a better standard of care. He has

:05:40.:05:46.

been really good. He has taken to being a show loss. He has gone from

:05:46.:05:50.

that are appearing at the Royal Welsh? Yes. And you have high hopes

:05:50.:05:57.

for them? You can never tell with a racehorse, because the training

:05:57.:06:03.

they get when they might a younger is not conventional. I would like

:06:03.:06:11.

them to win, I really hope that it all goes right. It is down to the

:06:11.:06:15.

judges. As long as it goes well, we're happy with that. Best of luck.

:06:15.:06:22.

Thank you very much. Rachel was an old hand at showing, but this horse

:06:23.:06:30.

has never step into the shoring before. This is his owner. This is

:06:30.:06:34.

your pastime at the Royal Welsh Show? Yes, it is. I am starting at

:06:34.:06:41.

the top! How have the preparations going? Very well, he's very calm, I

:06:41.:06:48.

have ridden him this morning. We will see. You are most -- more used

:06:48.:06:54.

to eventing. Yes, it is more individual. You have an address at

:06:54.:07:01.

Edge Ring, a jumping ring, or your own. So dealing with a group of

:07:01.:07:08.

horses is more daunting. In the retraining the racecourse class

:07:08.:07:12.

there are 18 horses, quit a big number. Yes, a lot of forces, let's

:07:12.:07:16.

hope that he is not thinking about racing. What was his racing

:07:16.:07:22.

history? Not very good. He raced on the Flat and did a little over

:07:22.:07:32.
:07:32.:07:36.

hurdles. We will catch up with you After a very rigorous competition

:07:36.:07:41.

in which the judge rides each of the losses himself, Rachel and

:07:41.:07:50.

Petter were placed 4th and 5th, in the top half of the class. From

:07:50.:07:55.

where I am standing that looked quite tough. Yes, it was a big

:07:55.:08:00.

class. And you were put through your paces. Yes, he was very

:08:00.:08:06.

thorough, the judge. Your first time in the show ring, what type of

:08:06.:08:11.

experience was it? I was glad that he kept the lid on it. He was quite

:08:11.:08:21.
:08:21.:08:21.

fresh, but he did me proud in the end. They are quite quirky

:08:21.:08:28.

creatures, so likely to blow at any moment. The horticultural marquee

:08:28.:08:33.

at the Royal Welsh is awash with colour, from radiant roses to

:08:33.:08:38.

fabulous futures, each and every flower has been grown with one day

:08:38.:08:43.

in nine, the day of judgment at the Royal Welsh Show. One man who knows

:08:43.:08:49.

more than most about this is Gareth Davies. He has been competing at

:08:49.:08:54.

the Royal Welsh for 40 years, without losing a single year. He

:08:54.:08:58.

doesn't just like showing his floral creations at the Royal Welsh.

:08:58.:09:08.
:09:08.:09:13.

His garden at home is the perfect showcase. Today is one of those

:09:13.:09:17.

days in the Callander that I have probably been thinking about for

:09:17.:09:20.

the last 12 months because for the last 18 years we have open the

:09:20.:09:25.

garden under the National Garden Scheme. It gives me a target, I

:09:25.:09:30.

have got to get my garden spot on bodies and day if I can. Perhaps I

:09:30.:09:40.
:09:40.:09:41.

would sit back a little, if this was not the case. What is key to my

:09:41.:09:45.

enjoyment is that growing from seed, growing from cuttings, from the

:09:45.:09:50.

autumn, from January, February onwards, we see the development

:09:50.:09:54.

from the beginning. The plants in the garden, you think, that is it,

:09:54.:10:01.

that is what I was aiming for. The Royal Welsh has a very important

:10:01.:10:08.

place in my heart, because I started exhibiting in at 40 years

:10:08.:10:13.

ago. The Royal Welsh has been an opportunity to rub shoulders with

:10:13.:10:19.

other people who exhibit, to chat and socialise and have some fun.

:10:19.:10:22.

And I'll have stewarding up there as well, to see the people you know

:10:22.:10:27.

coming and going, you make so many friends. I am hoping to take some

:10:27.:10:33.

roses, it depends on the weather. We all say that, but it does depend

:10:33.:10:37.

on the weather with the roses, some pot plants, some foliage plants,

:10:37.:10:46.

begonias, that is what I hope to be able to do. Those lovely velvet

:10:46.:10:52.

rowers petals, through to their futures, what an incredible mix of

:10:52.:10:57.

colour. You have these large bush varieties, smaller ones, the range

:10:57.:11:01.

of colours from red and white, through to the lavenders and

:11:01.:11:06.

purples, the these shades of pink, and gone are the days when you just

:11:06.:11:12.

had red and purple, now there is a greater spectrum of colour. You are

:11:12.:11:15.

so clever, to produce these beautiful blooms for us at this

:11:15.:11:22.

time of year, because recently we have got very early Summers, which

:11:22.:11:25.

means the Royal Welsh Show is quite late on in the year, so how do you

:11:25.:11:30.

do it? That is a very good point, because you have to try and hold

:11:30.:11:34.

things back a little, not the easiest thing to do. You have got

:11:34.:11:39.

to prune the plants at the right time, and keeping them in a

:11:39.:11:44.

temperature of a minimum of 14 Celsius in the winter, and give

:11:44.:11:49.

them a head start in the spring. the time you get to the Royal Welsh

:11:49.:11:53.

it is about the theatre of the display. You cannot help looking at

:11:53.:12:00.

that. Yes, it has long, tubular flowers, it has a slightly sub-

:12:00.:12:05.

tropical appearance, it has a tendency to flower right through

:12:05.:12:09.

until the frost, but in the winter, I give it slightly more water than

:12:09.:12:15.

the others, because the sappers not rising and it might do I off

:12:15.:12:20.

completely. It is a very impressive tally of prizes that you have a.

:12:20.:12:26.

Yes, 13 firsts. All I can say is congratulations to you and your

:12:26.:12:36.
:12:36.:12:51.

MUSIC: Theme From Rocky. I was about to step out onto the World's

:12:51.:12:59.

greatest sheep stage. Come on, sweetheart. Some last-minute

:12:59.:13:09.
:13:09.:13:16.

You know what? This is such an incredible experience. I am in a

:13:16.:13:22.

real competition at the Royal Welsh. I don't care how I do, apart from I

:13:22.:13:32.
:13:32.:13:42.

This is really nerve-racking. How do you think we did? I think

:13:42.:13:52.
:13:52.:14:06.

First time at the Royal Welsh, I am blown away. I feel elated,

:14:06.:14:12.

absolutely amazing, my first ever attempt at showing a sheep, and 5th

:14:12.:14:18.

prize. And all the people back in Cardiff are going to be really

:14:18.:14:22.

proud of me, they are city boy, coming out and having a go, and

:14:22.:14:29.

coming out 5th. I feel great! What an afternoon. I have so much

:14:29.:14:32.

admiration for the people that a short sheet here, and they

:14:32.:14:35.

understand, when people are putting so much effort and preparation time,

:14:35.:14:40.

to get these animals ready, burrs and hours of waiting, it is all

:14:40.:14:50.
:14:50.:14:51.

Tuesday is a big day for the cattle breeders. I witness the sight of a

:14:51.:14:57.

Lancaster bomber in the hills and trees met and improve -- a

:14:57.:15:07.
:15:07.:15:10.

10 years ago, the British farming community was devastated by for it

:15:10.:15:14.

and mouth disease and Wales was no exception. Thousands of animals

:15:14.:15:19.

were slaughtered and the countryside was closed. Livelihoods

:15:19.:15:22.

were lost overnight and countless events were cancelled to prevent

:15:22.:15:27.

the spread of disease. The Royal Welsh was one of those events

:15:27.:15:34.

cancelled in 2001, the first time since 1947. Many of those that lost

:15:34.:15:39.

stock in the dark days of 2001 gave up farming altogether, others took

:15:39.:15:45.

a deep breath and started again and one of them was Owain. Despite of

:15:45.:15:55.
:15:55.:16:02.

losing everything, he is back here Very tough year. Third and mouth

:16:02.:16:08.

broke out I had a call saying they would come and fetch the 2000 sheep

:16:08.:16:14.

tomorrow morning. But after some frantic calls, they kindly let me

:16:14.:16:23.

keep them. I picked the best ewes had them blood-tested. Was it

:16:23.:16:29.

difficult for you to find the same quality of stock. Very difficult,

:16:29.:16:34.

very difficult to get the numbers up again. It took seven or eight

:16:34.:16:43.

years. You at the Royal Welsh, how important is it to be here? I have

:16:43.:16:50.

been showing since 1950 and I have never missed it. I have judged

:16:50.:16:57.

three or four times. You are competing today. That is right.

:16:57.:17:04.

the Wiltshire corn? It has a strong tradition here. They have always

:17:04.:17:14.
:17:14.:17:20.

After careful preparation, the responsibility is handed down to

:17:20.:17:30.
:17:30.:17:32.

As always, tensions were running high. The judge having a difficult

:17:32.:17:42.
:17:42.:17:46.

task but in the end awarded the ram Happy? Being in the ring is enough

:17:46.:17:51.

for me. Sometimes you get more than you expect but sometimes not quite

:17:51.:18:01.

as good as you expect like today. Well done. Today, visitors to the

:18:01.:18:05.

show get to see the unique sight of a fly-past by the only airworthy

:18:05.:18:11.

Lancaster bomber left in Britain. A tribute to Mr Richard Moseley he

:18:11.:18:16.

was the show as treasurer for 39 years. The fly-past is an honour to

:18:16.:18:20.

all those who like Richard Moseley risks and lost their lives during

:18:20.:18:26.

the Second World War. As an 18- year-old in the Second World War,

:18:27.:18:33.

Richard, or Dick Moseley, was rear gunner in a Lancaster bomber

:18:33.:18:38.

serving in RAF Bomber to a team gold Squadron. This put painting

:18:38.:18:44.

was gifted to mark the 60th anniversary of that war. It depicts

:18:44.:18:54.
:18:54.:19:10.

Mrs Moseley, Ellen, gel, Jimmy Reilley, this must have been a very

:19:10.:19:16.

emotional occasion for you to witness this fly-past. It was

:19:16.:19:20.

extremely emotional. What do you think your father would have felt

:19:21.:19:26.

when he saw the fly-past? My father would have been extremely proud and

:19:26.:19:31.

also absolutely delighted that the Lancaster flew over the show today.

:19:31.:19:35.

I think at this time, he would want to be sure we remembered everybody

:19:35.:19:39.

else he was part of the Second World War and he would have been a

:19:39.:19:45.

very proud man which he had been here today. He loved the show. It

:19:45.:19:53.

was his life. Yes. He gave all he support he could give to the show

:19:53.:19:56.

and the summer show was the best in the world. But he had another life

:19:56.:20:03.

before that when he was a young boy of 18. Yes. Because in those days

:20:03.:20:11.

he was known as Ginger Moseley. never called anyone Ginger! It was

:20:12.:20:19.

an invitation to a fight. No, he was Dick. It is a great honour to

:20:19.:20:22.

meet you because you are here representing the members of the

:20:22.:20:27.

crew who cannot be here. It is incredible that you flew 32

:20:27.:20:33.

missions, lots of them daylight raids. That is right. What was your

:20:33.:20:40.

job? It was my job to see the bomb doors were opened. Dick's great day

:20:40.:20:47.

was over Britain, where we got a fighter attack. We lost a lot of

:20:47.:20:54.

aircraft that day and he gave a commentary as good as a man on a

:20:54.:21:01.

boat race. Simply calling out the day's best -- distance and that was

:21:01.:21:06.

it. It must have been a lovely feeling to watch that Lancaster or

:21:06.:21:14.

fly over. It was. I would have love Dick to be here. He was here in

:21:14.:21:24.
:21:24.:21:34.

spirit. I am sure. It was for all The beef competition is always one

:21:34.:21:39.

of the show highlights with all 15 pedigree beef breeds choosing their

:21:39.:21:44.

five best matching animals to represent the breed. Each team is

:21:44.:21:54.
:21:54.:21:57.

chosen by a judge for Easter show You had a difficult job because

:21:57.:22:03.

they are well over 100 entered this year. How do you choose those five

:22:03.:22:07.

different animals? You are looking for animals that match each other,

:22:07.:22:14.

so when the judge looks at them, he says, they are all good. A good

:22:14.:22:24.
:22:24.:22:25.

Joining me ringside to watch this magnificent competition is Lennon

:22:25.:22:32.

fawn, a breeder from. We know where your loyalties lie. What do you

:22:32.:22:40.

think of this team? This team has a fantastic five individual animals.

:22:40.:22:45.

Whether there are even enough to win this competition, I am not sure,

:22:45.:22:50.

but as individuals they are very, very good animals. This competition

:22:50.:22:57.

is a showcase for the breed. It is celebrating its 40th anniversary in

:22:57.:23:02.

the UK and it has gone on from strength to strength in those 40

:23:02.:23:12.
:23:12.:23:26.

I know it is difficult for you to be objective, but who do you think

:23:26.:23:32.

will take it? It is very difficult to decide. I know the Welsh Black

:23:32.:23:38.

will be the breed most popular, however, I think that the Belgian

:23:39.:23:43.

brewers will be very dangerous today. A how do you think the

:23:43.:23:48.

lemmas will do? For I think they will be in the running but not

:23:48.:23:53.

quite there. 17 years after this competition began at the Royal

:23:53.:23:58.

Welsh, judging this year was in the hands of a farmer and well-known

:23:58.:24:05.

singer Trevor Edwards. The first prize is going to go to the British

:24:05.:24:14.

blues. APPLAUSE Glen, you will ride.

:24:14.:24:20.

It was the British blues. What do you think? A I think what he says

:24:20.:24:28.

is quite correct. They are matched more evenly than any other group.

:24:28.:24:34.

Congratulations. Well done. It was your year. Yes, second time in a

:24:34.:24:41.

row. Very chuffed. When we think of the further Pavilion, we tend to

:24:41.:24:47.

think of poultry but there are also some 240 pigeons to see, split into

:24:47.:24:53.

three categories - racing, flying and fancy. We went to meet one

:24:53.:24:57.

enthusiastic young competitor who is a chip off the old block when it

:24:57.:25:03.

comes to keeping pigeons, learning his trade from his grandfather.

:25:03.:25:13.
:25:13.:25:17.

am Francis and I will be taking a I am taking it to different breeds

:25:17.:25:23.

of pigeons to the Royal Welsh Show this year. First I am taking my

:25:23.:25:28.

main breed which is the old Dutch tumbler and then my new breed,

:25:28.:25:38.
:25:38.:25:41.

I was older than Aled when he started showing. I did not have

:25:41.:25:47.

anyone to go with me but my father made me a small box, I was a member

:25:47.:25:55.

of a small club, and I used to catch the bus to town. I have the

:25:55.:26:00.

same breeds as my grandad because a lot of people would think then that

:26:00.:26:05.

my grandad just does it, because people are shown birds in the name

:26:05.:26:10.

of their children and their children are like one or two years

:26:10.:26:16.

old. You need to have all your feathers right and make sure all

:26:16.:26:24.

the feet are intact and that they are good enough to be shown. Lift

:26:24.:26:30.

the further, you get a lot over damage. You'll get a band further.

:26:30.:26:35.

If it is not bent too badly, you can put it into hot water and it

:26:35.:26:43.

will straighten. I pass on as much knowledge as they can, but I am

:26:43.:26:50.

still learning at my age. He is still winning in some places but I

:26:50.:26:57.

am catching up. I would like to see him winning. I do not mind losing.

:26:57.:27:04.

Francis, and it, the results came in yesterday. How did you do?

:27:04.:27:09.

a Supreme Champion with the fancy pigeons and my grandson had a

:27:09.:27:14.

reserve champion. You have to be pleased with that. I am very

:27:14.:27:24.
:27:24.:27:25.

pleased. He is extraordinary! lovely bird. Their head is the most

:27:25.:27:31.

you're not just showing birds, you are stewards. Grandad Is this do it

champions. In the cattle, sheep and pig section, Supreme Champions are

:28:21.:28:27.

crowned. There was emotion in the main ring as the Welsh cob passes

:28:27.:28:31.

reached a climax. On Wednesday morning, Rachael was watching the

:28:32.:28:36.

action in the Supreme Dairy. Wednesday morning, the champions

:28:36.:28:42.

from each of the four dairy sections stepped back into the

:28:42.:28:49.

cattle ring to compete for the supreme championship. The Harris

:28:49.:28:53.

family are here competing in the short horn section, like all

:28:53.:28:58.

exhibitors, the dream is to be representing their breed in the

:28:58.:29:03.

Supreme dairy championship. I am with father and son as they get

:29:03.:29:09.

ready for competition. What do you bring to the Royal Welsh this year?

:29:09.:29:14.

We have three short horns to promote the breed because they are

:29:14.:29:21.

not many of them. We needed to promote the breed, they work well

:29:21.:29:28.

for us at home. How do you divide the duties between you? At the

:29:28.:29:32.

Royal Welsh, this is what I call dad's a holiday, a social event of

:29:33.:29:38.

the year. He comes up and looks after the cals and me and my mother

:29:38.:29:42.

stay at home. You had a great day yesterday, you won the Prix

:29:42.:29:49.

champion, so you go on to compete. A special moment. Fantastic. To get

:29:49.:29:55.

there in the ring with the other champions, that is our chance.

:29:55.:29:59.

Especially on a Welsh a level, we get to show the rest of Great

:29:59.:30:05.

Britain what we have to offer. pressure! The not at all. It is my

:30:06.:30:15.
:30:16.:30:20.

What does it mean to you as a family to be representing your

:30:20.:30:26.

breed? It is fantastic for the breed to be here in this show, to

:30:26.:30:31.

take that one animal for that one day, it is your show. Who do you

:30:31.:30:35.

think is going to take the championship? I think without

:30:35.:30:39.

hesitation it has got to be the Holstein. We have not seen one of

:30:39.:30:43.

that quality Grace the shoring for many years. And that is what the

:30:43.:30:48.

breed needs right now have. So much of the judging comes down to style

:30:48.:30:52.

of animals, and you can recognise the style of the Holstein here

:30:52.:30:56.

today, she stands out more than any other cow in that ring. She does

:30:56.:31:06.
:31:06.:31:18.

look tremendous, but we will see You were spot-on, the Holstein has

:31:18.:31:21.

taken the championship. I don't think there could have been any

:31:21.:31:27.

other choice today, that cow stood out. What does this mean? The it is

:31:27.:31:33.

a great feeling, a marvellous feeling. I have won prizes before

:31:33.:31:38.

but not the individual cow of the show, the best cow ensure. We have

:31:39.:31:47.

been a bridesmaid so many times but never the bride. So it is a good

:31:47.:31:57.
:31:57.:31:59.

feeling for us, our friends and family. Congratulations to you.

:31:59.:32:03.

was a great honour and privilege to be chosen to judge the Royal Welsh.

:32:03.:32:07.

You would see 30-but the five judges in a lifetime and there is a

:32:07.:32:12.

list of over 200, so we're very honoured to be on that list. What I

:32:12.:32:16.

will be looking for is the natural style coming down the ring, full

:32:16.:32:22.

presence, good action, been shown to his true potential. It will be

:32:22.:32:29.

the best selection of Welsh Cobs in the whole world. And I hope to make

:32:29.:32:35.

the right decision on the day. thoughts of a judge on the once-in-

:32:35.:32:40.

a-lifetime privilege of judging the Welsh cob class, but the champion

today. Wick this morning, the junior stallions common, the four-

:32:49.:32:54.

year-old to seven-year-olds. Then, the senior stallions make their

:32:54.:33:00.

spectacular entrance. A I am here with a group of exhibitors were

:33:00.:33:04.

trying for success in both classes, whilst keeping it in the family.

:33:04.:33:10.

What we have is two families, acting as a team. Here we have

:33:10.:33:16.

Philip, whose horse is taking part in the senior stallion class. Over

:33:16.:33:22.

a year, we have Matt senior, whose horse teacake -- is taking part in

:33:22.:33:31.

the junior event. And your horse, and yours, our brothers? Yes, half-

:33:31.:33:36.

brothers, minds goes in the junior class, and then Philip's was forced

:33:36.:33:40.

on in the seniors. And Matt Junior's going to be doing the

:33:40.:33:46.

running for you. Yes, junior does the running, some readers the

:33:46.:33:51.

preparation and Tommy does the running for Philip. Have you got

:33:51.:33:59.

dual nationality? Coming to Wales, shown Welsh cobs. No, he has. He is

:33:59.:34:05.

an adopted Welshman! Despite the accent! What does it mean to you

:34:05.:34:11.

all to win here at the Royal Welsh? It is a dream, we work all year for

:34:11.:34:21.
:34:21.:34:23.

this particular day. First up, in the stallion class, black Harry. I

:34:23.:34:28.

cannot imagine how you must be feeling now. To say that I was

:34:28.:34:33.

nervous would be an understatement. This is his first attempt? Yes, at

:34:33.:34:36.

the Royal Welsh, and the one that is standing second was the winner

:34:36.:34:40.

last year, so there is even more pressure. He's making a good fist

:34:40.:34:47.

of it so far. Unbelievable at the moment. I am so nervous, I don't

:34:47.:34:52.

know what to say! You are trembling! They are lovely animals.

:34:52.:34:57.

If you don't feel that way, you shouldn't be here. It is an amazing

:34:57.:35:07.
:35:07.:35:21.

We have got it! Fantastic! A I am A great result for the junior

:35:21.:35:27.

stallion, Black Harry. Let's see how his half-brother does this

:35:27.:35:35.

afternoon. Playing my very own small part in the chic section

:35:35.:35:39.

makes me appreciate how a special it is to exhibit animals that there

:35:39.:35:43.

will show. To compete in the Supreme Championship, before you

:35:43.:35:48.

can do that you have to be voted top of the class, best indeed, and

:35:48.:35:52.

then and only then do you get the opportunity to compete at the Royal

:35:52.:35:56.

Welsh. To win the Supreme Championship - that is the ultimate

:35:56.:36:01.

dream. One young man who started the week with big dreams is James

:36:02.:36:06.

Lennard, who has been showing his own flock of Jacob sheep with a

:36:07.:36:11.

little help from his sister, Emily. First and foremost, how have you

:36:12.:36:18.

done? We have done very well. We have had a first, a 4th, and the

:36:18.:36:26.

theft, and we had a first with the you, and the second with a you lamb.

:36:26.:36:33.

What other chances on going on to the Supreme? Looking quite good.

:36:33.:36:38.

Hopefully next year, we will come back and have bigger, better sheet,

:36:38.:36:43.

and we will go from there and hopefully win again. You are

:36:43.:36:48.

showing Jacobs sheep - or why that particular breed? We like the

:36:48.:36:52.

nature of the sheet, and there is good competition in them, and they

:36:52.:36:59.

are very friendly and good natured. A I have certainly noticed that the

:36:59.:37:05.

they are good natured. How do you get into this? We bought some Jacob

:37:05.:37:08.

sheep from the local community farm and it went from there. Someone

:37:08.:37:14.

said that I should show them, and they showed them at the local show,

:37:14.:37:21.

back in 2005, I think it was, and it just went on from there. I

:37:21.:37:28.

bought my three pedigree ewes. do the Jacobs normally do in the

:37:28.:37:35.

Supreme? I have only ever known it to win once in the Supreme, because

:37:35.:37:42.

they are fine boned sheep, so they takes something of a hit when they,

:37:42.:37:48.

against sheep like the textile after selecting the best and the

:37:48.:37:52.

uproar, Poland and continental section, it was a head-to-head

:37:53.:38:00.

contest. And judge, Richard Weir, from Bristol, found it pretty

:38:00.:38:09.

straightforward. Goodness me, that was quick. Yes, this one has won

:38:09.:38:13.

the Supreme Champion, well done to them, Glee sheep. The judge

:38:13.:38:16.

obviously knew what he was looking for because that was a matter of

:38:16.:38:22.

seconds. Yes, it is a good sheep, so it catches the eye of the judge.

:38:22.:38:27.

Do you agree with the judge? Yes, it was a really good sheep, to be

:38:27.:38:35.

in the competition. Award the champion of champions then? Yes.

:38:35.:38:39.

This is a huge crowd pleaser at the Royal Welsh Show, and the

:38:39.:38:46.

atmosphere is terrific as everyone gets behind the Welsh. The All

:38:46.:38:51.

Nations champion is decided here on Wednesday. Speed, skill and stamina

:38:51.:38:57.

decide who wins at sheep shearing. Sheep shearing is not a competition,

:38:57.:39:04.

but a way of life, a vital part of the agricultural cycle. We met two

:39:04.:39:08.

young sheep shearers from Swansea at work. They are competing in the

:39:08.:39:12.

open competition against the old shearing store wars for the very

:39:12.:39:17.

first time and have a tough act to follow, including this year, in the

:39:17.:39:27.
:39:27.:39:28.

key Bingham. We are right on the end, near Warren said. And we have

:39:28.:39:33.

the sheep in this morning, and two of my nephews, Mark and Matthew,

:39:33.:39:42.

and another friend of ours coming down as well. Matthew Evans is she

:39:42.:39:46.

doing in the autumn, edition of the Royal Welsh and will hopefully get

:39:46.:39:52.

through to champion of Wales as well. I have won the championship

:39:52.:39:57.

of Wales nine times. I have been lucky enough to travel all over the

:39:57.:40:01.

world representing Wales and the UK. It is good to see these young boys

:40:01.:40:07.

coming in and having a go. Last year and the Royal Welsh the were

:40:07.:40:13.

100 boys coming and competing, so it is tough. It is not just on

:40:13.:40:19.

speed but on quality. You have got to have that combined mix, to try

:40:19.:40:24.

to get through. We work together every day, so there is always a

:40:24.:40:30.

battle going on in work, we are at the same speed, and it is more fun

:40:30.:40:34.

working with someone at the same speed because you try to get better,

:40:34.:40:41.

and you compete more. You learn a lot, and if they see you doing

:40:41.:40:50.

something wrong they come and help you. We had mad to travel to New

:40:50.:40:55.

Zealand and Australia. We're well known. If you are keen on winning

:40:55.:40:59.

the competition you have to be doing the job every day, and

:40:59.:41:04.

concentrate on doing a good job, every sheep that you sure, you have

:41:04.:41:11.

to be thinking about winning the Royal Welsh. You are both old

:41:11.:41:15.

friends but when it comes to competing, is it serious is this?

:41:15.:41:21.

It can be, I Shea against him every day in a shed, so we have a

:41:21.:41:26.

competition every day. When it gets up here there is a big audience are

:41:26.:41:31.

you-so you have to try and please the crowd. Does the act as we get

:41:31.:41:36.

to you? Yes, I do get a lot of nerves, especially when all eyes

:41:36.:41:43.

are on the opera. A best of luck, boys, thanks for your time and good

:41:43.:41:53.
:41:53.:41:54.

luck with your sheep shearing. Both boys made it to the quarter-

:41:54.:41:58.

final of the championship Shearer of Wales, and Matthew made it to

:41:58.:42:03.

the semi-final of the open competition, but his mentor, Mickey,

:42:03.:42:13.
:42:13.:42:15.

is still in the running to be crowned Welsh champion again. Line-

:42:15.:42:20.

outs and in shreds, and I am only watching. Them boys have been

:42:20.:42:24.

working hard for the last 11 minutes, shearing 20 lambs in this

:42:24.:42:28.

final, and it looks like Gareth Daniels might just have the edge.

:42:29.:42:36.

It is difficult to tell. And the sweat was pouring off them. It is

:42:36.:42:41.

hard work, you have got a lease on, the pressure, the crowd, add this

:42:41.:42:51.

means everything to those boys, so yes, they are working out. Gareth,

:42:51.:42:55.

you are this year's Welsh sheep shearing champion - who does that

:42:55.:43:03.

feel? Pretty awesome! It was pretty tough, I have not quite seen the

:43:03.:43:09.

points, but I am chuffed to be on top. You get to represent Wales and

:43:09.:43:11.

the World Championships in New Zealand. Will you be celebrating

:43:11.:43:19.

before then? Yes, thank you. And you very much. It is the

:43:19.:43:22.

responsibility of the sponsor county to organise the vintage

:43:22.:43:29.

machinery displays each year at the Royal Welsh. This year, it is

:43:29.:43:33.

Camaerthenshire British missionary society that is in charge, and it

:43:33.:43:42.

is a display for character, and characters. -- Camaerthenshire than

:43:42.:43:52.
:43:52.:43:55.

Page machine in a society. -- vintage machinery society. This is

:43:55.:43:59.

a David Brown, of late 40s vintage. It is only one of the tractors that

:44:00.:44:04.

we have here today. It is a relatively small display, but it is

:44:04.:44:09.

very bearded, and it has attracted a lot of interest among passers-by.

:44:09.:44:15.

I am walking at these machines and people will think that they are

:44:15.:44:21.

just display models, not working. These are all very much working

:44:21.:44:25.

machines. Some of them, in the conditions that you see her with

:44:25.:44:30.

this one, probably are used more for display than actual work, but

:44:30.:44:36.

they are capable of doing a day's work at any time. My own machine is

:44:36.:44:42.

deliberately kept in an unrestored condition. Mechanically it is OK,

:44:42.:44:48.

but as I used it for work, from time to time, I have not painted it

:44:48.:44:53.

up. So that is the way that it goes. There are two schools of thought,

:44:53.:45:00.

some like to keep them in their working clothes, if you will.

:45:00.:45:05.

machines are going on and on. It is like, who's going to retire first,

:45:05.:45:13.

you or the machine? It is a race! Anybody's guess. At the moment I

:45:13.:45:23.
:45:23.:45:28.

hope to carry on and do a few more I can only think you must be

:45:29.:45:35.

feeling incredibly proud watching him run out. I am so excited. I

:45:35.:45:41.

have never felt this way before. This is the senior outstanding

:45:41.:45:48.

class. He is in it for the first time. An extra-special because you

:45:48.:45:54.

bred him. I broke him from a baby. Mr Harry is getting ready for his

:45:55.:46:04.
:46:05.:46:10.

individual run. It will be all or That this fine, he is doing the job

:46:10.:46:20.
:46:20.:46:20.

After that fantastic performance, Phil was a little disappointed as

:46:21.:46:24.

Mr Javier was called in second. What we thought was the final

:46:24.:46:30.

judgment, but it was not over yet as judge asked his top two

:46:30.:46:35.

stallions to perform once again before and enraptured crowd and an

:46:35.:46:45.
:46:45.:46:56.

He has brought him in.,! Does that mean he has won? Yes. Yes!

:46:56.:47:05.

Congratulations. Well done. Tears are going to fall now. 30 years I

:47:05.:47:10.

have been waiting for this to win the senior Staddon class and I have

:47:10.:47:20.
:47:20.:47:24.

This was a story that none of us could have dreamt, as power

:47:24.:47:27.

stallion went head-to-head with top stallion award. It was black Harry

:47:27.:47:32.

who took the top prize and he also went on to be over all melt

:47:32.:47:37.

champion. This meant that Matt's young stallion was up for the

:47:37.:47:42.

ultimate prize, the George Prince of Wales Cup against a female

:47:42.:47:52.

champion. This is the grand finale. Unfortunately, we cannot lose now

:47:52.:47:58.

because the winning stallion and the winning mare are in the final.

:47:58.:48:03.

Perhaps quite not the fairy-tale ending you were thinking of a but

:48:03.:48:10.

still stardust all round as Black Harry was pipped to the post by his

:48:10.:48:20.
:48:20.:48:20.

half-sister, owned by Jonathan and family. The mayor came up trumps.

:48:20.:48:28.

She did. She is a big man and sheep really get up and go when she needs

:48:28.:48:32.

to. She loves the crowd getting behind her and she has turned on

:48:32.:48:42.
:48:42.:49:04.

Thursday is one of my favourite days of the Royal Welsh. In the

:49:04.:49:12.

Horse section, the sprightly Cup is awarded. All around the Showground

:49:12.:49:16.

the competitions reach their conclusions. We have been in the

:49:16.:49:22.

sheep section where we have been following the action all week.

:49:22.:49:28.

is the most popular breed of sheep here. It is a continental breed and

:49:28.:49:32.

it does well in the interbreed class, that is the competition for

:49:32.:49:37.

the best group of three owned and showed by the same individual. I am

:49:37.:49:47.
:49:47.:50:00.

here to learn a little bit more How does this competition work?

:50:00.:50:10.

the judge, he will look for something that, this time you have

:50:10.:50:13.

to have a ewe lamb in the competition so that will be

:50:13.:50:19.

slightly smaller. The breed does quite well. Why is that? You can

:50:19.:50:24.

trim them. It is a bit of a benefit if you can trim them, get them

:50:24.:50:30.

looking the same but you are not allowed to touch their wall. Only

:50:30.:50:36.

wash their faces and legs. You will be out there in the interbreed

:50:36.:50:46.

competition today. Best of luck. After almost an hour in the ring,

:50:46.:50:56.

the judge whittled them down to two groups. And the champion goes to

:50:56.:51:06.
:51:06.:51:12.

Congratulations. The breed won the pairs yesterday. Yes we did. We had

:51:12.:51:18.

a good day yesterday. Today is not bad either, you won the interbreed.

:51:18.:51:23.

It is the first time I have won this club of three. A great honour

:51:23.:51:30.

to win both. You must be exhausted. You were in the ring an hour.

:51:30.:51:35.

and I have been home every night and I was up early this morning to

:51:35.:51:40.

get them ready. Many congratulations, well deserved.

:51:40.:51:45.

Thank you. We all love our household pets and pedigree

:51:45.:51:49.

prizewinners or not, they are part of the family. In a special section

:51:49.:51:55.

here, To celebrate the animals who share our daily lives, the pet

:51:55.:52:01.

class is open to all sorts of animals. The question is, how do

:52:01.:52:11.
:52:11.:52:12.

Leighton Evers is the man with the difficult task this year. The

:52:12.:52:16.

owners must leave their beloved animals behind and step out of the

:52:16.:52:25.

pavilion before Leighton gets to On to the cats and you will not get

:52:25.:52:31.

them out? No, the reason for that is there are so many people here,

:52:31.:52:37.

it could frighten them. This is a young kitten, very playful. He has

:52:37.:52:41.

been handled by its owner already because they have been playing with

:52:41.:52:47.

it. What kind of animals are entered? A mixture. The biggest

:52:47.:52:53.

class has been guinea-pigs, rabbits and so we have also had hamsters,

:52:53.:53:00.

cabs, a tortoise even. This is the pet section. Therefore, we are

:53:00.:53:07.

looking at pets. How they handle, how they are looked after,

:53:07.:53:16.

cleanliness, the breed. We do not look at the standard that they are

:53:16.:53:26.
:53:26.:53:31.

for the breed section, but what You have made your decision now.

:53:31.:53:36.

Can you reveal who was best in show? It was quite a difficult

:53:36.:53:44.

choice, but my two best in shows was this little guinea-pig and the

:53:44.:53:52.

best in show this year is this rabbit. It has been a wonderfully

:53:52.:53:59.

looked after. You can see how soft the fur is. Beautiful condition. I

:53:59.:54:05.

do not know who it is owned by, but you can find out after. I have

she is pampered. Congratulations. There for Welsh pony horse and
