Welsh Show. We have had a fantastic 50th year since the show has been | :00:36. | :00:40.
situated here at Llanelwedd and tonight we will renew the highlights | :00:40. | :00:45.
of an exciting, fun filled week. On Monday we visited the horticultural | :00:46. | :00:53.
museum and saw some fabulous flower displays. For the past 50 Years | :00:53. | :00:57.
Llanelwedd has played host to a successful and colourful flower tent | :00:57. | :01:01.
and this year is no different. Flower displays are something to be | :01:01. | :01:05.
marvelled that. I have no idea that creative minds and fingers have been | :01:05. | :01:10.
busy again this year. There are rules to do with size, backdrops and | :01:10. | :01:16.
specific themes. This woman is competing in seven different | :01:16. | :01:21.
classes. With 20 years experience, having come through the ranks, she | :01:21. | :01:31.
:01:31. | :01:38. | ||
is currently the champion. I am going to cover this whole area with | :01:38. | :01:42.
wild material, the whole design from top to bottom. It is made of plant | :01:42. | :01:50.
material. Little pieces of full, just to interpret the class title. I | :01:50. | :01:55.
have been here since midday, I will be here until midnight flower | :01:55. | :02:05.
:02:05. | :02:07. | ||
arranging. It is a wonderful place to come and meet and socialise. A | :02:07. | :02:11.
lovely atmosphere, we all get on really well. It is a lovely show to | :02:11. | :02:21.
:02:21. | :02:22. | ||
compete in. How have you done? Brilliant. Highly commended. Highest | :02:22. | :02:29.
number of points, I am very pleased. This is one of your works. It is | :02:29. | :02:33.
absolutely beautiful, totally stunning. Tried to do something | :02:33. | :02:38.
different from the usual designs I normally do, create something | :02:38. | :02:43.
totally innovative with a variety of textures and foliage, colour, form | :02:43. | :02:48.
and what you need to create a good overall floral display. I just | :02:48. | :02:51.
thought linking the colours, linked in with the Welsh designer Julien | :02:52. | :02:57.
MacDonald, and making the handbag and tissue also helps with the | :02:57. | :03:05.
interpretation of British fashion week. Also a judge? Yes, I recently | :03:05. | :03:11.
judged my first national flower show in Bournemouth, which was quite an | :03:11. | :03:15.
achievement. I enjoyed every minute of it, hopefully I will go on to | :03:15. | :03:20.
more shows in the future. I enjoy competition work also if you are a, | :03:21. | :03:27.
competition work is important. think all that is left to say is | :03:27. | :03:34.
congratulations and good luck for the future, as if you needed! | :03:34. | :03:37.
Portuguese School of a question I'd is a team of 16 people and 20 horses | :03:37. | :03:41.
that have travelled up to four years to get to guest-macro, and although | :03:41. | :03:46.
they have performed all over the world, this is their first time in | :03:46. | :03:52.
Wales. -- to get to Llanelwedd. You are the team manager of the | :03:52. | :03:55.
Portuguese School, how much work goes into preparing these horses for | :03:55. | :04:04.
displays? It is a lot of work, all these horses their main arranged in | :04:04. | :04:10.
a manner, so it takes a lot of time, about an hour each horse. What is so | :04:10. | :04:15.
special about these horses? They have a very nice character and/or | :04:15. | :04:24.
easy to teach. They almost seem to perform ballet, they are above the | :04:24. | :04:33.
ground. It looks like they are dancing, we use 18th-century music. | :04:33. | :04:40.
How long have you been with these horses? Since 33 years. The school | :04:40. | :04:50.
:04:50. | :04:54. | ||
was founded in 1979 and I became a rider in 1988. My experiences could! | :04:54. | :05:04.
:05:04. | :05:07. | ||
I look forward to seeing you in from the pigs and the further and | :05:07. | :05:16.
further, the goats are housed. They vary in size, but this breed caught | :05:16. | :05:23.
my eye, the Angora goats. Maybe it is the curly hair! The chief steward | :05:23. | :05:27.
moved to Wales in the 27 and now farms in the heart of the mountains | :05:27. | :05:33.
in amateur. As well as showing his interesting animals, they have found | :05:33. | :05:41.
another use by selling them as mohair. We first started giving | :05:41. | :05:47.
dairy goats 40 years ago. There were no Angora goats brought in the | :05:47. | :05:53.
country until 1981. We wanted fibre goats, you have to milk them twice a | :05:53. | :05:59.
day, not so much work with the Angoras, they are more like sheep. I | :05:59. | :06:05.
have a small showroom, I try and have a small amount of the different | :06:05. | :06:11.
types of things you can get from the Angora goat. We have the skins, we | :06:11. | :06:18.
have the garments, I am an agent for someone who sells stocks which are | :06:18. | :06:25.
very good. It is a spin off, really. Diversification. The mohair has gone | :06:25. | :06:32.
up in value since we have exported to South Africa, where the main | :06:32. | :06:35.
world market for mohair is, we are getting a much better return. It | :06:36. | :06:45.
seemed the obvious thing for us to do. Vivian and Douglas, you and the | :06:45. | :06:49.
goats have arrived safely from Pembrokeshire. Who is this fine | :06:49. | :06:56.
specimen? This is Aberystwyth, he is a senior goat, he has retained all | :06:56. | :07:03.
his most fair -- mohair, which is even all the way around. Sometimes | :07:03. | :07:08.
they get heavy on the front. many have you brought and how much | :07:08. | :07:14.
work is it to show them here? have brought nine, will to keep them | :07:14. | :07:19.
as clean as we can for the show, make them presentable. We can't do | :07:19. | :07:23.
much in the way of washing them because it will be tracked, it tends | :07:23. | :07:33.
:07:33. | :07:33. | ||
to make them go fluffy. Best of luck to you both and to Aberystwyth here. | :07:33. | :07:37.
With their growth should -- grandchildren watching, they took | :07:37. | :07:43.
top honours in the senior but class, another triumph for Aberystwyth the | :07:43. | :07:50.
Angora goat. They described it as the Clash of the Titans! Thank you | :07:50. | :07:58.
very much! Wales came out on top! Always good when that happens! | :07:58. | :08:08.
:08:08. | :08:12. | ||
Aberystwyth 's winning streak settled here in race macro the | :08:12. | :08:15.
further and feather tent was a smaller affair than it is now. Since | :08:15. | :08:20.
then it has grown in popularity and attracts a number of dedicated young | :08:20. | :08:29.
people who share a love of all things further and further. One of | :08:29. | :08:32.
those is Matthew Barrett from Llanrwst who has brought 22 chickens | :08:32. | :08:38.
to the show this year to compete. am originally from carbon. I have | :08:38. | :08:47.
got about 100 birds where I live now. Mostly they are chicks, growing | :08:47. | :08:56.
up but I do love my hobby. It is the main part of my life, the birds. My | :08:56. | :09:00.
grandad, my mother 's father, started when they moved to Wales | :09:00. | :09:06.
when my mum was seven. When I was born and growing up, I just got | :09:06. | :09:09.
interested with grandad in the poultry, when I started showing | :09:09. | :09:14.
them, I started of there. I have carried on because I know he would | :09:14. | :09:18.
be very proud of what I am achieving still now. It is thanks to him and | :09:18. | :09:24.
by mother. To me it is not the winning, it is taking part. It is | :09:24. | :09:29.
just to meet new people and getting new juveniles, if they were to hand, | :09:30. | :09:38.
you are there to help fund. -- if they want a hand. Here they are. How | :09:38. | :09:44.
confident are you feeling? Half and half. It depends on the judge on the | :09:44. | :09:50.
day, but the weather, we have put them down because of the hot | :09:50. | :09:55.
weather. I have five different breeds today. Which one will clinch | :09:56. | :10:02.
the rise? This is my best breed. I have been showing the Germans since | :10:02. | :10:12.
:10:12. | :10:14. | ||
1987. A German Lancashire?Yes. He has nice feathers, nice shine to the | :10:14. | :10:19.
feathers, and a nice type, when you look at a German you should look at | :10:19. | :10:25.
a wine glass shape, the legs should be like a stem. I have never heard | :10:25. | :10:35.
:10:35. | :10:36. | ||
of a chick being described as a wine glass! That is the phrase we use. | :10:36. | :10:46.
:10:46. | :10:54. | ||
Good luck! We will see how you get got the best Belgian, her sister got | :10:54. | :11:03.
third. The white Japanese, we had best of breed. Another first. Second | :11:03. | :11:07.
and third with the Belgian males. Over here, best of breed again, and | :11:07. | :11:16.
the German Lancashire, the one we saw today, I had best of breed. | :11:16. | :11:25.
must be doing something right! flocked to the show here at | :11:25. | :11:30.
Llanelwedd, some have even called it the welcoming heart of Wales but, | :11:30. | :11:34.
but strange as it may seem there are people who have never had the | :11:34. | :11:44.
:11:44. | :11:52. | ||
virginity to walk this hallowed Port Talbot. I am a student at | :11:52. | :11:55.
Swansea which a bulletin university, going into my third | :11:55. | :12:03.
year. I have got for jobs, for part-time jobs that keep me busy. I | :12:03. | :12:09.
am a former Miss Wales. I am Miss Wales 2011 and I am absolutely in | :12:09. | :12:13.
love with Wales, everything about it. I am so patriotically and so | :12:14. | :12:23.
:12:24. | :12:29. | ||
looking forward to going to the the Royal Welsh, know their role | :12:29. | :12:35.
that of animals and I know it is -- I thought it was towards McCants | :12:35. | :12:42.
left but apparently not. I hope I don't get lost on the way! I hear | :12:42. | :12:46.
there is a lot of nice food, and I'm really good at eating so I think I | :12:46. | :12:54.
will enjoy that, tasting BeeGees and cakes and hopefully sweets! -- | :12:54. | :12:58.
tasting the cheese. There are animals competing, that is kind of | :12:58. | :13:02.
like what I do, so it is kind of like the Miss Wales of the animal | :13:02. | :13:09.
world! It will be good, it will be exciting, looking forward to it. I | :13:09. | :13:15.
would most like to see the animals, because I absolutely love any | :13:15. | :13:19.
animal, I'm quite of big animals like cows coming towards me, at | :13:19. | :13:26.
quite a fast pace. That will be fun. I have never been in a tractor. It | :13:26. | :13:31.
is something I have wanted to do, to try for a while. That will be | :13:31. | :13:41.
:13:41. | :13:44. | ||
something else ticked off my list, I to the show! If you would like to | :13:44. | :13:48.
find out what she thought of the Royal Welsh, we will be meeting her | :13:48. | :13:56.
tomorrow night. On Tuesday, Rachel made sure she saw one of her | :13:57. | :14:06.
:14:07. | :14:14. | ||
has to be the chief team of five. Murray, you are a Hereford farmer. | :14:14. | :14:17.
And you farm in the Canterbury region of the South Island. So you | :14:17. | :14:22.
have had a long trip? What does it mean to you to be judging here at | :14:22. | :14:27.
The Royal Welsh. A real honour. When I got the invitation, I couldn't | :14:27. | :14:34.
believe it. And, you know, so proud to be here judging this prestigious | :14:34. | :14:39.
event. You are a Hereford man but there's not going to be any | :14:39. | :14:49.
:14:49. | :14:51. | ||
favouritism today, is there? No. Joining me to enjoy this magnificent | :14:51. | :14:55.
spectacle is Bernard. We have 14 teams competing but is it fair to | :14:55. | :15:02.
say this is more of a display than a competition? I suppose it is what is | :15:02. | :15:05.
known as corporate image, because many come here to show the best of | :15:05. | :15:12.
their particular breed. Because it is hard to put one breed against | :15:12. | :15:18.
another. A continental and a native, for example. It is one of my pet | :15:18. | :15:22.
hates. By hate judging one against the other. But those cattle are | :15:22. | :15:26.
doing quite different jobs so you are almost looking for something | :15:26. | :15:30.
completely different from one breed to the next. Probably some of the | :15:30. | :15:34.
best cattle in the world are in this ring at the very moment. They are | :15:34. | :15:37.
not therefore their own gratification, they are there for | :15:37. | :15:44.
the gratification of the breed. And that, to me, is what is so special | :15:44. | :15:54.
:15:54. | :16:13. | ||
winner on the day... And I have between the cement tower and the | :16:13. | :16:18.
Charolais. Two very good breeds. For me, I would agree with him. There | :16:18. | :16:23.
was more breed in the winning team. Not an easy thing to do, that | :16:24. | :16:33.
balance, in the Charolais. Superb team, excellent cattle. Very well | :16:33. | :16:37.
balanced. Well done! Brilliant! You must be thrilled! Absolutely | :16:38. | :16:44.
delighted! To come to The Royal Welsh and when, it is what we all | :16:44. | :16:49.
strive for. It really is. It's a major achievement. Not only for | :16:49. | :16:56.
individuals but for the breed as a whole. It has been a highlight of my | :16:56. | :17:01.
judging career, I would say. You did an excellent job. It has been lovely | :17:01. | :17:06.
to meet you. I'm about to meet one half of a | :17:06. | :17:09.
husband and wife team who both share a love of Welsh horses but their | :17:09. | :17:14.
love does not stick to one breed. Sian and David Morris from | :17:14. | :17:24.
:17:24. | :17:24. | ||
Aberystwyth both favoured different types of Welsh pony. So, David, what | :17:24. | :17:31.
was it about the section Cs that appeal to you? Well, back in the 70s | :17:31. | :17:40.
we bought a filly and from then on, we have had to lovely fillies, one | :17:40. | :17:46.
that won three times. You are very much a section C and section A | :17:46. | :17:50.
family, because right now Sian is showing her section A. And in a | :17:50. | :17:54.
minute you will be in the ring with Gucci. It will be a strange | :17:54. | :17:58.
experience, in a way, because last year you were judging and this year | :17:58. | :18:02.
you are competing. How will it be to be competing against amongst those | :18:03. | :18:08.
-- amongst those you place last year? This is the best place in the | :18:08. | :18:15.
world. Words cannot describe it. Judging is electrifying. Judging is | :18:15. | :18:21.
a huge honour because it is nothing like competing. How do you think you | :18:21. | :18:25.
will do? As long as he behaves himself, everything else is a bonus, | :18:25. | :18:35.
:18:35. | :18:36. | ||
really. After that, it is the lot of luck. And lock was certainly on | :18:36. | :18:45.
Sian's side. She came first with her section A pony, Fire's Still My | :18:45. | :18:52.
Sunshine. It seems silly to ask you how you are feeling. You must be | :18:52. | :19:02.
:19:02. | :19:03. | ||
elated. Yes!Did you feel confident going in? Not at all!She is | :19:03. | :19:06.
obviously a star quality. You must be doing something right. Do you | :19:06. | :19:16.
think so? Yes! Let's hope David De John -- does just as well. A | :19:16. | :19:26.
:19:26. | :19:27. | ||
fantastic result for you. Thank you. And David's Gucci did match Sian's | :19:27. | :19:33.
success, coming first in his class. How did Gucci enjoy himself out | :19:33. | :19:39.
there? He enjoyed himself. He did a full show. I'm very, very pleased he | :19:39. | :19:49.
:19:49. | :19:50. | ||
did it in his class. He did it as a yearling. It is fantastic. In last | :19:50. | :19:54.
night's programme we met a young lady who was very excited to be | :19:54. | :19:58.
coming to The Royal Welsh for the very first time. So, the past Miss | :19:58. | :20:05.
Wales winner from Port Talbot, Sara Manchipp. Welcome to The Royal | :20:05. | :20:12.
Welsh! Thank you!What do you think so far? I love it! So many things to | :20:12. | :20:17.
do, so many things to look at. And I'm excited because I've never been | :20:17. | :20:23.
so I'd want to waste any time. let's not waste any time! Because | :20:23. | :20:28.
you said you wanted to get a tractor. There is one right behind | :20:28. | :20:36.
you! What about driving to the corner shop in this bad boy? Do you | :20:36. | :20:43.
like shopping, Sara? I do. It is one of my favourite things to do. | :20:43. | :20:49.
show you a vintage piece of Welsh fashion. What do you reckon? I like | :20:49. | :20:59.
:20:59. | :20:59. | ||
it in pink! Let's see if they have one for you. Let's try a cowboy hat. | :20:59. | :21:09.
:21:09. | :21:24. | ||
This would look good in the tractor, feels really nice. It's really | :21:24. | :21:33.
therapeutic! Well, Sara, let me introduce you to one of this year's | :21:33. | :21:38.
celebrities. You might be won but this is another. He is a Charolais | :21:38. | :21:43.
bull. Isn't he enormous? He is the biggest ball I've ever seen in my | :21:43. | :21:52.
life! Would it surprise you if I'd told you he was bought for 70,000? | :21:52. | :21:58.
Wow! That is a not for a burger, isn't it? He's not going to get | :21:58. | :22:02.
eaten today! He is lush! He is definitely my highlight. By love | :22:02. | :22:11.
him. What we have to do now is find you a farmer! Yes, I could read my | :22:11. | :22:16.
husband! I'm glad you've enjoyed it. You going to come back next year? | :22:16. | :22:26.
:22:26. | :22:27. | ||
Definitely. Thank you. Red ribbons, red rosettes, silver | :22:27. | :22:32.
cups. You would expect all of that at an agricultural show. But at this | :22:32. | :22:42.
:22:42. | :22:42. | ||
show, they are fighting for the experience and the local club here, | :22:42. | :22:50.
the judo club, has enjoyed many successes in the past. So, Richard, | :22:50. | :22:56.
a judo club. Is it popular? Very popular in mid Wales. We have places | :22:56. | :23:02.
from the age of five upwards and we have a young lady representing Great | :23:02. | :23:06.
Britain at the World Championships in Rio in August. And she started | :23:06. | :23:13.
here. So you have some real success stories already? Yes. We had a man | :23:13. | :23:19.
at the Commonwealth Games and we have another lady going to the | :23:19. | :23:24.
Commonwealth Games. It fluctuates but we have been going for quite a | :23:24. | :23:30.
long time now and one of the oldest clubs. You have been at it quite | :23:30. | :23:36.
some time. Was it the 1970s you started? Yes. With straw mats with | :23:36. | :23:42.
wood along the edges! And poor facilities. We are very lucky now | :23:42. | :23:49.
without sports centre. I've seen you have some young members here today. | :23:49. | :23:54.
Any of these guys going to be able to teach me a couple of moves? | :23:54. | :24:02.
think we can do that. Let's have a go! I thought you would! Here we go. | :24:02. | :24:11.
So, my looking OK? Yes. We will rough you up if we can! So, I'd push | :24:11. | :24:18.
you with my elbow... Come and have another go. I think we will get you | :24:18. | :24:25.
somebody at a bit more your size. Definitely! Either young lady for | :24:25. | :24:31.
you. I'm sure you will do well. Be gentle with him! Are you sure you | :24:31. | :24:39.
are ready for this? OK, right! Oh, no! I think I'm going to leave it to | :24:39. | :24:49.
:24:49. | :24:49. | ||
the professionals. Levelled! Is he all right? She didn't even check if | :24:49. | :24:55.
I was still alive! Did you notice? Thank you. | :24:55. | :24:59.
Here at the show, looking after your animals is a big responsibility and | :24:59. | :25:03.
a lot of hard work, and the sheep section is no exception. But imagine | :25:03. | :25:11.
if you are showing sheep and running a trade stand? Then the going gets | :25:11. | :25:16.
really tough. Chris Brooks is showing four sheep at the show this | :25:16. | :25:20.
year and competing for the third time but he'll so has his own | :25:20. | :25:24.
renewable energy company, and is here with a stand. So he is juggling | :25:24. | :25:30.
two jobs at the show. Hello, Chris. Hard at work! How on earth do you | :25:30. | :25:36.
juggle showing sheep and being on a stand? It is not a juggle, it is a | :25:36. | :25:41.
joy! But you have to run. The cause, you know, I've been down there this | :25:41. | :25:46.
morning and we have customers. -- because. We will be back down this | :25:46. | :25:52.
afternoon. And, yes, it is great fun. You are about to compete in the | :25:52. | :25:58.
theme classes. Why did you go for this Welsh breed? When I've retired | :25:58. | :26:03.
from engineering, I spent a lot of time looking at sheep. Now, the one | :26:03. | :26:10.
guy was looking at are ugly and much too expensive! Say that quietly, | :26:10. | :26:16.
Chris! And there are others where I can't pronounce their names I'd try | :26:16. | :26:20.
to find a breed that was up-and-coming. And I love these. | :26:20. | :26:26.
what does this show mean to you? is difficult to say because you keep | :26:26. | :26:31.
coming back. You wonder why but you do. I've think it is the most unique | :26:31. | :26:38.
privilege to be here and I can't tell you. There hasn't been a better | :26:38. | :26:41.
show for making friends, the atmosphere, the Ireland, and it is | :26:41. | :26:49.
just so much fun. -- the environment. The classes were | :26:49. | :26:54.
particularly well attended. No rosettes for Chris this time but it | :26:54. | :26:59.
is not all about the winning. show they told me it would take me | :26:59. | :27:04.
five years to get a ribbon. Three years down, statistically I'm | :27:04. | :27:09.
getting closer! So I've got two more years and I will be there. It is all | :27:09. | :27:14.
about trying and coming here. You bring your own stock, you land them, | :27:14. | :27:19.
you look after them, you bring them, and I'm proud of them. I | :27:19. | :27:25.
really am. And you wouldn't have missed it for anything? No! I | :27:25. | :27:32.
wouldn't. I will be here next year. The food hall here is the home to | :27:32. | :27:36.
some of the best food and drink in the country. Also some businesses | :27:36. | :27:41.
are represented, big and small. One is a bakery with a husband and wife | :27:41. | :27:48.
team. Sam and his wife run this small | :27:48. | :27:53.
bakery by the side of their house, where they bake various pastries, | :27:53. | :27:57.
pies and cakes for their customers. But the story of how they started is | :27:57. | :28:04.
quite an interesting one. What a good idea. Shall I'd try a | :28:04. | :28:11.
bit? Delicious! Sam, tell me, how did your bakery come about? About | :28:11. | :28:15.
six years ago, our son was involved in a cycling accident and was badly | :28:15. | :28:21.
hurt. He is a shift by trade. He came home. After a few months we | :28:21. | :28:24.
thought it would be best if he got himself a job and it would be a good | :28:24. | :28:31.
idea if he could start his own company. How is he now?He is | :28:31. | :28:36.
absolutely fine now. Good.We started with the baked goods. | :28:36. | :28:42.
Pastis, quiches, sausage rolls. And we thought we would go for something | :28:42. | :28:46.
different so we looked around and started to invent our own fillings. | :28:46. | :28:49.
So we went for butternut squash and Cheddar, which is one of our | :28:49. | :28:56.
vegetarian options. Tell me what you are doing here. You have some | :28:56. | :29:01.
different things you have brought to the show. We have brought Spanish | :29:01. | :29:06.
chicken, which we see here with new potatoes, which is a mix of chicken | :29:06. | :29:11.
breast and chorizo sausage. We have Moroccan lamb with chickpeas, which | :29:11. | :29:18.
you see here with Kursk is. And we also have this as well, which has a | :29:18. | :29:23.
mix of two cheeses in it. So they are already very simple recipes but | :29:23. | :29:28.
very, very tasty. Well, it sounds as though you are both very busy, so | :29:28. | :29:38.
:29:38. | :29:47. | ||
good luck. we still had plenty to to-do including catching up with the | :29:47. | :29:53.
young farmers. Here in the young farmers section, there is a myriad | :29:53. | :30:01.
of competitions available to members aged between ten and 26 including | :30:01. | :30:05.
stock judging, even rugby. There is one competition everyone will want | :30:05. | :30:13.
to win, the tug-of-war! Training has been constant and hard for months as | :30:13. | :30:19.
I found out when I went to the small rural village in Montgomeryshire on | :30:19. | :30:28.
Sunday evening. I am a novice, what is this all about? It is quite a | :30:29. | :30:33.
competitive sport, it consists of about eight members and coach on | :30:33. | :30:39.
each team, it is about who has the most strength and stamina. We train | :30:39. | :30:42.
about three times a week, it is safer, because not having the right | :30:42. | :30:48.
training, not doing it the right way can cause a lot of injury, back | :30:48. | :30:53.
strain, and calls everything. We need to warm up a bit, bit of a joke | :30:54. | :31:03.
to get our muscles ready. -- a jogger. You are the team leader, | :31:03. | :31:05.
what is the most important thing I should know about the tug-of-war | :31:05. | :31:11.
technique? You have to keep your body angle straight all the time, | :31:11. | :31:18.
not bend over, keep your heels on the floor and get the maximum grip. | :31:18. | :31:28.
:31:28. | :31:39. | ||
As you will see, these boots get a than it looks, I can tell you. I | :31:39. | :31:44.
caught up with you two weeks ago, how has the training been going? | :31:44. | :31:48.
has been OK, not been the best of whether to be training. This is just | :31:48. | :31:54.
to say who is in the team, because for the girls, the maximum weight is | :31:54. | :32:04.
:32:04. | :32:04. | ||
580 and for the boys it's 680. you confident? If we come off the | :32:04. | :32:11.
right feeling happy, we can't ask for more. Come on! There will be | :32:11. | :32:19.
hell to pay if the girls win. not having that! Confident?Hundred | :32:19. | :32:29.
:32:29. | :32:42. | ||
because they were the heaviest team to qualify and they were gutted. But | :32:42. | :32:45.
great news for the girls, they came in third overall and well over the | :32:45. | :32:52.
moon. Third-place? Yes! Better than we thought. The first time we have | :32:52. | :32:58.
pulled as well. Congratulations, amazing achievement. You are not | :32:59. | :33:06.
going to have a go now? We have seen some fantastic examples of dairy | :33:06. | :33:12.
cows over the years that have gone on to begin to did among the best in | :33:12. | :33:18.
the world today it is about finding out which will be counted the | :33:18. | :33:24.
supreme champion. This year there is a new breed of vying for top | :33:24. | :33:30.
honours. The Brown Swiss first came to the UK 40 years ago and that | :33:31. | :33:38.
anniversary is being marked with a first appearance at the Royal Welsh. | :33:38. | :33:44.
We started about five years ago, we needed something better quality | :33:44. | :33:48.
milk, they are very, very calm, quiet and docile animals, lovely to | :33:48. | :33:56.
deal with. The breed celebrates 40 years in the UK, had timely! | :33:57. | :34:02.
Definitely. The pre-festival at so much over the years, now the breed | :34:02. | :34:08.
has developed so much, it is so nice to see them here. You are presenting | :34:08. | :34:13.
the breed, you made it through to the final. How does that feel? It is | :34:13. | :34:23.
:34:23. | :34:38. | ||
the ship is you when Thomas, a breeder and qualifier. This is the | :34:38. | :34:41.
highlight. This is where the cream rises to the top. We have some | :34:41. | :34:49.
phenomenal cows in there today. This cow is on 12 o'clock. The Ayrshire | :34:49. | :34:59.
:34:59. | :35:06. | ||
cow is a great example. We have a thought there were three fantastic | :35:06. | :35:09.
cows and he had a really hard decision to make as to where it | :35:09. | :35:16.
went. Congratulations. Not the first time you have one here. No, it has | :35:16. | :35:23.
been for five years, but a special occasion, I wanted to win. The jab | :35:23. | :35:29.
sugars over, howdy you think the cow did? I think she did really well, | :35:29. | :35:34.
she held her own, it is really in to see the breed there. Back again with | :35:34. | :35:44.
:35:44. | :35:47. | ||
the Brown Swiss next year? of different breeds of all things | :35:47. | :35:51.
furry and feathery, most of which were their own breed society. Up | :35:51. | :36:01.
until this year one breed of duck, the Harlequin, didn't have one. The | :36:01. | :36:04.
main menu set the Harlequin duck society this year is recently | :36:04. | :36:14.
:36:14. | :36:15. | ||
willing. One publicity -- competitor is J. How did you get on? In the | :36:15. | :36:20.
Welsh Harlequin class who came first, second and third and our | :36:20. | :36:26.
winning Harlequin duck also took the best tale. What level of preparation | :36:26. | :36:31.
goes into showing these ducks? ducks are fairly simple to prepare, | :36:31. | :36:36.
we give them some clean bathing water and they do it themselves. | :36:36. | :36:41.
Just wipe them over, check they aren't muddy when they get here. | :36:41. | :36:48.
Tell them the about this breed. is connected with my native county, | :36:48. | :36:55.
they were bred in England, by a guy called Captain Barnett, then he | :36:55. | :36:59.
moved over to North Wales, he has decided to rename them Welsh | :36:59. | :37:04.
harlequins. Then he started selling eggs all over the world, they were | :37:04. | :37:11.
exported to America. Lots of people breeding them? They are considered a | :37:11. | :37:16.
rare breed. Myself and a colleague established the Welsh Harlequin | :37:16. | :37:21.
society and launched the website here in the spring fair, and by now | :37:21. | :37:28.
we have about 55 members who have joined. I can see what you set it | :37:28. | :37:30.
up, they are fantastic, congratulations, you must be | :37:30. | :37:40.
:37:40. | :37:42. | ||
exciting part of the show, the sheep against the clock, the crowd whipped | :37:42. | :37:46.
into a frenzy by individuals who definitely have the gift of the gab. | :37:46. | :37:56.
:37:56. | :37:58. | ||
and the hum of the machines but we don't often see them. But today we | :37:58. | :38:06.
will meet three of them -- two of them, both big characters. You are | :38:06. | :38:10.
the best commentators on the show. You really whip the crowd into a | :38:10. | :38:16.
frenzy, how do you do that? It is not through preparation as you | :38:16. | :38:23.
thought, it is whatever comes into my head at the time it back he is | :38:23. | :38:28.
going back to start any day, down the line he goes. You do go quite | :38:28. | :38:34.
close to the line! I do get a slap on the wrist every now and again | :38:34. | :38:38.
from some members of the committee, but you have got to have a bit of | :38:38. | :38:48.
:38:48. | :38:49. | ||
fun. That is sharing, ladies and gentlemen. Everybody here knows | :38:49. | :38:52.
about sharing, from my point of view it is all about obtaining that | :38:53. | :38:59.
crowd. If I can put the crypt 's -- smile on people 's faces, that is my | :38:59. | :39:06.
job done. Look at him go now! Daniel is going to show us magic now. | :39:06. | :39:12.
is the secret to really good commentary? You have to inform these | :39:12. | :39:16.
shearers, because they have won it to what I am saying. If they are | :39:17. | :39:20.
behind they want to know they are so they can get stuck in. That is the | :39:20. | :39:25.
way it is. I am then informing the public, try and keep them involved | :39:25. | :39:35.
:39:35. | :39:49. | ||
at all! He goes in for his next one! They are really flying! We have got | :39:49. | :39:59.
:39:59. | :40:06. | ||
Daniel down there! Who is it going worked almost as hard as these | :40:06. | :40:12.
shearers themselves. No, I have the easy job. It is like running a | :40:12. | :40:16.
marathon back to do 20 sheep, we have the easy job. What do you think | :40:16. | :40:23.
of the crowd? Fantastic, if you can get them lifted, it makes our job | :40:23. | :40:29.
easier. Who is going to be the champion shearer in Wales? | :40:29. | :40:33.
wouldn't like to say but I would love to be my nephew, obviously! You | :40:33. | :40:40.
have got the best in Wales there. wasn't Steve 's and this time, the | :40:40. | :40:50.
:40:50. | :40:52. | ||
2013 championship of Wales was took centre stage. I caught up with | :40:52. | :40:58.
Andrew Thomas as he was preparing to compete. With brought our | :40:58. | :41:04.
six-year-old to come, he won two years ago. They are big part of my | :41:04. | :41:10.
life. I live in an industrial area, a mining and steel community, far | :41:10. | :41:14.
from farming and agricultural. Although they have not been any | :41:14. | :41:18.
immediate whores, I have ever loved them since I was a young child. -- | :41:18. | :41:28.
:41:28. | :41:28. | ||
immediate horses. I showed them... Thanks a lot. And the result, a | :41:28. | :41:32.
creditable third in a strong class. And a first for her fall. The | :41:32. | :41:41.
winner, however was owned by Mr and Mrs Hughes of agenda. -- Bridgend. | :41:41. | :41:48.
The main ring is alive with anticipation, compared -- competing | :41:48. | :41:54.
for the Prince of Wales cup. The grandstand is brimming and the | :41:54. | :41:58.
excitement is electrifying. With me now is John Llewellyn James, a | :41:58. | :42:03.
family lawyer by profession originally from Haverfordwest and a | :42:03. | :42:07.
past winner. You know all about taking part in this. Tell me about | :42:07. | :42:12.
the stage is living up to the Prince of Wales cup. It will restart years | :42:12. | :42:16.
before you turn up here, you work out what your best stallions and | :42:17. | :42:23.
mayors are. We are watching the senior stallions? Which sections of | :42:23. | :42:33.
:42:33. | :42:33. | ||
a running? One of the favourites, standing on top. Standing in second | :42:33. | :42:39.
is this one, I didn't tip him to be in the first three but he is a | :42:39. | :42:42.
pathetic runner, he has caught the public? Eye, they have given him a | :42:42. | :42:52.
:42:52. | :42:53. | ||
great cheer and clearly he has done well. She has made her decision, she | :42:53. | :43:00.
has gone with this one. You were right! One of the few predictions I | :43:00. | :43:08.
have done that has come right. have the junior stallion up against | :43:08. | :43:13.
the senior one. I'm sure he's going to beat the junior selling, he's the | :43:13. | :43:23.
:43:23. | :43:25. | ||
favourite. Yes!You are right, well done. Next, the George, Prince of | :43:25. | :43:32.
Wales cup. Mayor versus stallion. This is a nail-biting moment. Here | :43:32. | :43:42.
:43:42. | :44:06. | ||
she is. Her mother has one here and now. Are they standing square? One | :44:06. | :44:13.
has moved their leg. Get the leg back! Wow! Black Harry... He has | :44:13. | :44:23.
:44:23. | :44:27. | ||
won. Well, OK! Boys rule!Next time, next time! That is a fantastic | :44:27. | :44:37.
result. Youths were the board. put it into words. It is emotional. | :44:37. | :44:40.
-- I cannot put it. My dad was going to buy this stallion before he | :44:40. | :44:48.
passed away. My son had told me the story that he was going to buy the | :44:48. | :44:53.
horse and then I bought him, so it is a fairytale. You've come again | :44:53. | :44:57.
and swept the boards again. We are so pleased for you. Well done. | :44:57. | :45:07.
:45:07. | :45:15. | ||
favourite creatures in the pet section of the further and further | :45:15. | :45:22.
pavilion. We are used to seeing all things | :45:22. | :45:25.
very on a Thursday here with special emphasis on the guinea pig, so when | :45:25. | :45:35.
:45:35. | :45:38. | ||
I've found these are got well all things creepy and Crawley. | :45:38. | :45:44.
Couldn't believe my eyes when I came across a royal python, a leopard | :45:44. | :45:50.
gecko and a Chilean Rose Chuen chiller. All owned by this man. Why | :45:50. | :46:00.
:46:00. | :46:00. | ||
was looking around. This is Pascal. He is only a baby and he has just | :46:00. | :46:04.
competed here today in the adult owned of the pet section. He didn't | :46:04. | :46:10.
get placed but good news for Sky. The gecko. She won her class. And | :46:10. | :46:20.
:46:20. | :46:20. | ||
the tarantula came second. Do you have a favourite? I shouldn't ask! | :46:20. | :46:24.
do love Pascal. He likes being handled and he is very inquisitive | :46:24. | :46:33.
as well. You have brought guinea pigs with you today? I have. Seven | :46:33. | :46:36.
of them! They vary from rough haired, smooth coated and | :46:36. | :46:46.
:46:46. | :46:47. | ||
long-haired. You have come in, Mikaela, with a giant African land | :46:47. | :46:52.
snails. This is a giant millipede. It looks like one of the Mombasa | :46:52. | :47:01.
trains eyesore in Africa. This is a fully grown millipede. It has to be | :47:01. | :47:06.
the righty of classes that brings me here because IM into such a wide | :47:06. | :47:10.
variety of animals. Coming here to a show like this with such a variety | :47:10. | :47:20.
of animals, you can't miss it. did you do overall? The snails came | :47:20. | :47:25.
third, my hamster got best hamster, my rabbit won his class and then I | :47:25. | :47:29.
have a couple of guinea pigs who came second in their classes. | :47:29. | :47:34.
you've had a great day? It's been a lovely day! I'm glad you've enjoyed | :47:34. | :47:44.
:47:44. | :47:48. | ||
your visit. You still have a couple Although it is the last morning of | :47:48. | :47:52.
the show, there is no chance for our next competitors to start winding | :47:52. | :47:56.
down because they are going full force into the Welsh part bred class | :47:56. | :48:02.
here in the main ring. Cathy and her family team have been competing for | :48:02. | :48:11.
20 years. However, there is one pony lucky to be competing today. | :48:11. | :48:18.
We are showing a yearling colt. A yearling part bred. He is called | :48:18. | :48:22.
Latif. He was an orphan and we reared him on a bottle. His mum died | :48:22. | :48:27.
when he was ten days old. So we reared him on formula milk, if you | :48:27. | :48:32.
like. The same as you would give to a baby, only specially made for | :48:32. | :48:36.
false. It was hard work. Every hour with a bottle of milk! Night and | :48:36. | :48:42.
day! That was for a week. And then extend the period of time between | :48:42. | :48:47.
the feeds. But during that time we managed to get another mayor to | :48:47. | :48:52.
auntie him, if you like, to keep him in his place. Because of an false | :48:52. | :48:55.
that bottle-fed tend to get boisterous and they don't have a | :48:55. | :48:59.
mother to tell them what is right or wrong. So rather than keeping | :49:00. | :49:08.
isolated and turn him out -- we turned him out with his auntie, | :49:08. | :49:14.
Okey-dokey. We're just hoping if he behaves, because he is a tiny bit | :49:14. | :49:19.
hormonal at the moment, just like adolescent boy, full of | :49:19. | :49:25.
testosterone... If we can control him and he has got a good head on | :49:25. | :49:34.
him, we are hopeful he might do Well, it must be nerve wracking for | :49:34. | :49:40.
you to be here ringside, watching him perform. How is he doing? | :49:40. | :49:47.
Welcomer he is very well-behaved. looks very calm so far. The judges | :49:47. | :49:51.
are now judging his confirmation and he will trot away and trot back to | :49:51. | :49:58.
make sure he moves straight. What is the worst thing he do? Jump on top | :49:58. | :50:08.
:50:08. | :50:25. | ||
of the judge! He is really we are in third place this morning. | :50:25. | :50:28.
That is very creditable. We are very happy because he has behaved | :50:28. | :50:38.
:50:38. | :50:39. | ||
himself. Yes, family friend Rebecca kept a tight rein on Latty. The | :50:39. | :50:47.
winner was owned by a Mrs Edwards. Yesterday we brought you the Welsh | :50:47. | :50:51.
Cob Championship but at the same time, I was keeping denied on the | :50:51. | :50:59.
Champion of Champions in the sheep ring. -- keeping an eye. | :50:59. | :51:02.
When you bring your sheep to The Royal Welsh Show there is only one | :51:02. | :51:07.
titled you dream of winning. The Sheep Champion of Champions. The | :51:07. | :51:11.
standard of the 45 different breeds being presented in the sheep ring is | :51:12. | :51:15.
top class. And one of the few people with experience of winning this | :51:15. | :51:22.
prestigious title in the past is Martin. Back in 2009, Martin won the | :51:22. | :51:25.
championship with his Hampshire down ram. His winning streak continues | :51:25. | :51:34.
because this year, he won the doctor ever at MS -- Evans award. Martyn, | :51:34. | :51:40.
when you think it comes from 3,000 sheep just a one, it is such an | :51:40. | :51:46.
honour, isn't it? Yes. It really meant the world to us. It is a great | :51:46. | :51:51.
shop window when you come to sell your stock afterwards as well. | :51:51. | :51:55.
judge has her work cut out for her this afternoon. What are they | :51:55. | :52:00.
looking for? They are looking for a powerful sheep but a correct | :52:00. | :52:07.
powerful sheep. Good teeth, good legs. Martin, we have our finalists. | :52:07. | :52:15.
Yes. They start on the Hill, go to the Continental and then the | :52:15. | :52:25.
:52:25. | :52:30. | ||
lowland. If I were a betting man, my money would go on this. Martin, you | :52:30. | :52:40.
:52:40. | :52:40. | ||
were bang on. She is a lovely sheep so well-deserved. So the Charolais | :52:40. | :52:49.
is Champion of Champions. Congratulations from more than 3,000 | :52:49. | :52:57.
sheep to one! What does it mean? means everything to us. A great | :52:57. | :53:06.
feeling to be the one left standing, so very chuffed. And you have come | :53:06. | :53:10.
down from Aberdeenshire? Yes. And we will be back down to do it next | :53:10. | :53:14.
year. This is my favourite part of the week. The competitions have come | :53:14. | :53:19.
to an end and it is time to crown a winner but who will take it? That is | :53:19. | :53:26.
the question. Firstly the winner of the rhythm championship will be | :53:26. | :53:29.
chosen and go head-to-head to compete for the supreme title, and | :53:29. | :53:33.
judging these competitions will be none other than 2012 Olympic | :53:33. | :53:40.
dressage gold medal winner Carl Hester. Carl, a very warm welcome to | :53:40. | :53:45.
the Welsh show. It is your first visit? Yes. And I'm going to be | :53:45. | :53:49.
really looking forward to judging this. The lucky thing for me is that | :53:49. | :53:54.
the waters and ponies coming forward are already champions, so it is just | :53:54. | :54:04.
:54:04. | :54:04. | ||
going to be down to my preference. -- the horses. I am joined | :54:04. | :54:08.
ringside. You certainly know what you are looking at. We are looking | :54:08. | :54:18.
:54:18. | :54:19. | ||
at the cuddy. Which warses have caught your eye? -- horsees? | :54:19. | :54:29.
:54:29. | :54:32. | ||
coloured horse Willie does move. The Welsh section, obviously, as you got | :54:32. | :54:38.
to be loyal to your country and Diane Welsh. Let's see who makes it. | :54:38. | :54:42.
And Carl Hester has made his decision. He's gone for the little | :54:42. | :54:52.
:54:52. | :54:58. | ||
Charlie section mayor. -- section C horse. Yes. She is really beautiful. | :54:58. | :55:05.
Which of these ponies now stands out for you? Well, the Welsh cob has a | :55:05. | :55:10.
fantastic gallop so that will take some beating. Two lead ponies here | :55:10. | :55:14.
are stunning. Fantastically turned out. A very strong competition but | :55:14. | :55:24.
:55:24. | :55:32. | ||
if had to pick one today so far, it championship. It is Material Girl. | :55:32. | :55:41.
She did a fantastic show. And the little dark horse came in reserve. | :55:41. | :55:50.
The winner of the in hand cuddy championship, with 15-year-old | :55:50. | :55:54.
section mayor, was brought back to compete against Helsing turned | :55:54. | :56:04.
:56:04. | :56:04. | ||
Material Girl And Pump Held Buckthorn. And it was the section C | :56:05. | :56:14.
:56:15. | :56:19. | ||
mayor. Some Old Lady Lillian. She crowned section champion. She has | :56:19. | :56:25.
taken the title for Wales and she deserves it. Yes, I think she | :56:25. | :56:30.
probably does. And this is the little was animal who has won the | :56:30. | :56:35.
crown today. Kate, you must be very proud. I am very proud but I think | :56:36. | :56:45.
:56:46. | :56:46. | ||
he is even more proud over here! What a wonderful story. She is quite | :56:46. | :56:51.
small to come to the show because she was only born a short time ago. | :56:51. | :57:01.
:57:01. | :57:17. | ||
Well done. Fantastic result. Thank show, in its 50th year, here gave us | :57:17. | :57:20.
four fabulous prize-winning days. We hope you have enjoyed it as much as | :57:20. | :57:25. |
