Welcome to the third day of the Royal Welsh Show. | :00:27. | :00:28.
There?s always a very special atmosphere | :00:29. | :00:31.
at the Show on a Wednesday, and today is no exception. | :00:32. | :00:33.
Powerful Welsh horses the Cobs, will dominate the Main Ring. | :00:34. | :00:36.
The Dairy Cow competitions reach a climax today | :00:37. | :00:43.
when the loveliest of the ladies gets crowned in the Supreme Champion | :00:44. | :00:46.
I?ll also be visiting the sheep section to watch the | :00:47. | :00:49.
Supreme Pairs Championship as the best of the breeds go head to head. | :00:50. | :00:55.
In the pig section they will also have a Supreme Champion | :00:56. | :00:58.
But I?ll also enjoy the company of the Young Farmers | :00:59. | :01:02.
in an entertaining but educational competition, and meet some of | :01:03. | :01:05.
The rabbits are here in their dozens and more. | :01:06. | :01:22.
This is Casper, a fine example of the Polish breed. | :01:23. | :01:27.
Because of the recent hot weather their fur is not at its best. | :01:28. | :01:30.
Like us humans they tend to shed their coats | :01:31. | :01:32.
Donna is a primary school teacher from Cardiff and last year she won | :01:33. | :01:42.
Best in show at The Royal Welsh. You have had an extremely early start | :01:43. | :01:46.
this morning. What have you brought to the show this year? We have | :01:47. | :01:50.
brought to red eyed Polish like Casper and my husband has brought | :01:51. | :01:57.
two Rex. How much of a problem if the weather? It is causing all sorts | :01:58. | :02:02.
of problems which is why we only brought four rabbits because there | :02:03. | :02:06.
are only with four that have a coat on them. You have around 80 at home | :02:07. | :02:11.
so this is a passion or is it an obsession? Both, I think. What are | :02:12. | :02:17.
the judges looking for? They look for the shape of the rabbit and a | :02:18. | :02:23.
coat on the rabbit. In this case his colour is white but it has to be | :02:24. | :02:27.
brilliant white. The best example of that colour and then you are looking | :02:28. | :02:32.
for general overall condition and fitness. Good luck today. Thank you | :02:33. | :02:34.
very much. Lovely to see you. In order to judge rabbits, | :02:35. | :02:42.
they need to be closely examined. And this handling makes them very | :02:43. | :02:44.
suitable pets Donna | :02:45. | :02:46.
as a primary school teacher knows that a rabbit is one way to win | :02:47. | :02:49.
children?s attention but today it?s the eagle sharp eye of the judge | :02:50. | :02:53.
that attends to her furry friends. How did you get on? I am really | :02:54. | :02:58.
thrilled. We have done well. Casper came second and he beat his daughter | :02:59. | :03:05.
so she was not very happy. Our Rex one of the Rex Challenger came | :03:06. | :03:10.
runner-up for the best Rex. Will you be back next year? I always am | :03:11. | :03:13.
because I had to win the rabbit section so I am always here. | :03:14. | :03:18.
As you may or may not know I, myself, stepped into this ring | :03:19. | :03:21.
Although I now know a thing or two I am content today to watch | :03:22. | :03:25.
In the ring Mrs VC Mills from Devon is judging the Supreme Pig Champion. | :03:26. | :03:31.
Last year this accolade was bestowed upon Lucy Georgiou and family | :03:32. | :03:34.
from Narberth in Pembrokeshire with their Saddleback Sow. | :03:35. | :03:48.
The Royal Welsh has been our family holiday for 30 years and we started | :03:49. | :03:55.
showing the pigs 16 years ago and they have been fab and we never | :03:56. | :04:00.
looks back. You had a lot of success last year? We did. Better than we | :04:01. | :04:03.
could have wished for because we won the lot. Are all of the family | :04:04. | :04:11.
involved in keeping Saddlebacks? There are 14 of us altogether that | :04:12. | :04:13.
stayed down in the caravan and everyone loves the pigs. My daughter | :04:14. | :04:19.
is seven months and her pig won last year, Doris torments. How have you | :04:20. | :04:26.
done this year? We have done OK, this is our young female pig who won | :04:27. | :04:32.
at her class. Our little ball got a second so not too bad but nothing | :04:33. | :04:36.
compared to last year. Lucy, you did not make it into the championship | :04:37. | :04:41.
this year but I hope you can join me at the ringside and talk me through | :04:42. | :04:47.
the competition. Is that OK? What is the judge looking for today? What | :04:48. | :04:54.
will catch I? In general they are looking for a good breeding pig and | :04:55. | :04:57.
a good meet pig. It is a job I would not want to do. You want a pig that | :04:58. | :05:02.
is good and strong on its legs and can move easily. Do you think you | :05:03. | :05:06.
will ever win the supreme champion again? You can only hope. I was so | :05:07. | :05:12.
excited to win at that time. It is a real fantastic thing to win. I have | :05:13. | :05:18.
happy I have if I get it again it will be fantastic but that is | :05:19. | :05:22.
something for the future. This year the supreme champion paid is a | :05:23. | :05:29.
British lop. It is owned by last year's runner-up, Catherine Nichols. | :05:30. | :05:34.
Last year you were the runner-up in this year the supreme pig Champion. | :05:35. | :05:41.
How does it feel? I am very happy. Excited as well? Yes. You must be. | :05:42. | :05:46.
Dad, I want to get an idea of how proud you are feeling? It is | :05:47. | :05:49.
brilliant, absolutely brilliant, I am chuffed for the whole family. It | :05:50. | :05:55.
is great, really great. You are the youngest supreme champion I had ever | :05:56. | :06:00.
come across and probably the most deserving. Congratulations. Thank | :06:01. | :06:00.
you. The modern, improved Welsh Pig can | :06:01. | :06:09.
be traced back to a white lop-eared breed kept in | :06:10. | :06:11.
Wales for as long as records exist. Welsh Pigs prospered greatly | :06:12. | :06:14.
after the Second World War when nearly everyone | :06:15. | :06:20.
in the country would keep one or two These days, | :06:21. | :06:22.
the Welsh Pigs are protected Here | :06:23. | :06:25.
in the Food Hall there is something Mouth-watering, yes, and, from | :06:26. | :06:35.
an economical point of view, very Here, amongst the cheese, the wine, | :06:36. | :06:39.
the meat and the preserves there is a new company this year marketing | :06:40. | :06:43.
chocolate treats. Alana Spencer is from Llanon | :06:44. | :06:45.
near Aberystwyth and has succeeded in turning | :06:46. | :06:47.
a strong interest into a business. From a young age her passion | :06:48. | :06:51.
was chocolate and we went to I started my business because my mum | :06:52. | :07:04.
brought me a -- bought me a chocolate book when I was 13 years | :07:05. | :07:08.
old and I taught myself how to make chocolates. It all went from there | :07:09. | :07:11.
so I learned how to make Artisan fresh cream truffles and I did some | :07:12. | :07:16.
really funky flavours and then it progressed into other things. I had | :07:17. | :07:20.
already been making cakes because from the age of 16 I was selling | :07:21. | :07:29.
cakes and they were going well so wide door I would try and make some | :07:30. | :07:36.
cakes. We have six products today, chocolate brownies, cr?me br?l?e | :07:37. | :07:40.
Brownies, peanut butter fudge cake, salted caramel slice and rocky road | :07:41. | :07:45.
and sticky toffee flapjacks. I absolutely love chocolate. Who | :07:46. | :07:54.
doesn't love chocolate? It is lovely when you give someone a product and | :07:55. | :07:57.
you can see the pleasure they get from eating the products. From the | :07:58. | :08:03.
create -- from the heat of the kitchen to the heat of the show, how | :08:04. | :08:08.
is it going? It is going really well. Despite the hate we are doing | :08:09. | :08:13.
really well. You young entrepreneur and you have learned really quickly | :08:14. | :08:16.
because you have sold to Heston Blumenthal. He has great taste and | :08:17. | :08:22.
we all know that so good luck to you. I hope it goes from strength to | :08:23. | :08:24.
strength. They say that the secret | :08:25. | :08:26.
of good breeding is to ensure that both parents are top notchers, | :08:27. | :08:29.
the best that they can be, and this next competition | :08:30. | :08:32.
in the sheep ring pays tribute to the best pair of sheep, one male | :08:33. | :08:34.
and one female from the same breed. The man that has had the tough | :08:35. | :08:38.
choice of deciding which male and which female to put forward is Ron | :08:39. | :08:41.
King, judge of the Kerry Hill Breed Ron, how did the judging go on | :08:42. | :08:57.
Monday? It is a great honour to be asked, isn't it? Very well. It is an | :08:58. | :09:02.
incredible honour. The Royal Welsh show is the pinnacle of any judge to | :09:03. | :09:07.
be asked to judge and it was particularly good on Monday because | :09:08. | :09:11.
we had such good weather and the classes were extremely strong. It is | :09:12. | :09:14.
nearly time for the competition itself so will you join me at the | :09:15. | :09:18.
ringside to talk me through it? I will do. Let's go. | :09:19. | :09:27.
The stage is set and it is a magnificent sight. How do they split | :09:28. | :09:36.
this competition? It is split into two sections, the accredited and the | :09:37. | :09:39.
nonaccredited. They are kept separate and then they draw a short | :09:40. | :09:44.
list from each section and pick the champion from each section and bring | :09:45. | :09:52.
them all together. The judge, Mike Adams from Gloucestershire, has | :09:53. | :09:56.
chosen his sixth front runner players from the nonaccredited side, | :09:57. | :10:01.
the Jacobs, the South Downs and the speckled face. The accredited, | :10:02. | :10:05.
Charolais, blue textiles and the suffix. Which pair will the judge | :10:06. | :10:11.
choose as supreme champions? Who would you pick out your winning | :10:12. | :10:16.
pair? I would be tempted to save the Suffolks. The south downs of this | :10:17. | :10:27.
year winners. They were bred by Kimberley from East Sussex. These | :10:28. | :10:38.
suffix Southdown 's have taken it. The whole competition. | :10:39. | :10:41.
Congratulations. Did you feel you had got it? I was really surprised, | :10:42. | :10:46.
it was fantastic. We have had reserved before but never won so we | :10:47. | :10:48.
are very happy. Rachael will find out which dairy | :10:49. | :10:52.
cow will be crowned Supreme Champion and I will take a closer look at the | :10:53. | :10:56.
handicrafts as well as the horses. Young Farmers know | :10:57. | :11:06.
a thing or two about conveying often difficult messages in a direct | :11:07. | :11:08.
and understandable manner which With 12 clubs competing, | :11:09. | :11:10.
the Emergency Services are given This competition is all about using | :11:11. | :11:26.
your wheelbarrow to depict an emergency disservice -- emergency | :11:27. | :11:30.
services display. Extra clubs are a very young team. Kayleigh, at the | :11:31. | :11:40.
tender age of 18, you are the chairperson. How does it feel? I am | :11:41. | :11:43.
one of the oldest members of the club. It is only a small club so I | :11:44. | :11:48.
had to step up and do it. Everyone is having a good laugh but this has | :11:49. | :11:53.
a serious message, doesn't it? Yes, we are commending the emergency | :11:54. | :11:56.
services and showing people the side-effects of drink driving and | :11:57. | :12:01.
driving at speed. It is a lot of fun but the message behind it is quite | :12:02. | :12:16.
serious. How many members are there? There are 20 in the club, | :12:17. | :12:19.
ranging from about 12 to the oldest is about 22 or 23, so we are quite a | :12:20. | :12:23.
young club but we are active and we love getting involved in everything. | :12:24. | :12:25.
What was your inspiration for writing the script? We are a small | :12:26. | :12:27.
community in a rural area and a drink-driving can be an issue and we | :12:28. | :12:30.
know people who have suffered from accidents and things so I wanted to | :12:31. | :12:32.
make a serious message. Well-deserved applause for their | :12:33. | :13:01.
sobering defection -- depiction of the horror caused by drink-driving. | :13:02. | :13:06.
The judges were impressed and they are awarded 703 and her team the | :13:07. | :13:13.
first prize. Were you pleased with your performance? Yes, we performed | :13:14. | :13:17.
as well as we could so it was good. I think everyone appreciated and you | :13:18. | :13:20.
look spectacular to us. Congratulations. | :13:21. | :13:23.
One of the most majestic sections at the Royal Welsh Show is | :13:24. | :13:26.
This year, the Prince of Wales Cup for the best Cob exhibit is being | :13:27. | :13:31.
given for the 90th time, and so everyone wants a piece of the prize. | :13:32. | :13:39.
One exhibitor who is competing in five Cob classes is Elgan Evans | :13:40. | :13:42.
with his Eglwysbach Stud from Llanwrda in Carmarthenshire. | :13:43. | :13:46.
His biggest hope is his four-year-old homebred Mare, | :13:47. | :13:54.
She has won Youngstock Champion here before. | :13:55. | :14:08.
How did you get on? Yesterday, I was hit with a two-year-old filly. I did | :14:09. | :14:18.
well. Today is the big day. Today is copter, today is the day everybody | :14:19. | :14:25.
comes to the show for. The mayors in the stallions, it is a big day for | :14:26. | :14:29.
me because I have got a mayor in there. -- a horse in there. You have | :14:30. | :14:38.
one in here. Yes, Eglwysbach Charisma. She is two years old, | :14:39. | :14:43.
she's got a good chance, she's looking well, and we will see what | :14:44. | :14:50.
happens. And you will be taking her cult with her. Yes, he will be in | :14:51. | :14:57.
there. And he will be judged as well, so we will be watching | :14:58. | :14:58.
closely. In a class of 17, Eglwysbach | :14:59. | :15:20.
Charisma received fourth prize. It was hot work in the Main Ring, but | :15:21. | :15:27.
worth it? Yes. 17 in the class, and she came fourth, so I am pleased. | :15:28. | :15:34.
You must be delighted! What's next? I will take to the next class, and | :15:35. | :15:38.
hopefully we will win something again. Well, good luck, we will be | :15:39. | :15:41.
watching. Fantastic! Mum came forth and this | :15:42. | :15:57.
little one came first! Did well. First show ever, and first prize. | :15:58. | :16:03.
Star of the future. You'll have to think of a good name for him now. I | :16:04. | :16:09.
will, I hope a good future for Kim. Well done, hope to see you again. | :16:10. | :16:22.
And later, we will be watching the cop classes and Best in show. Who | :16:23. | :16:32.
will take the title this year in an award that has traditionally been | :16:33. | :16:37.
dominated by the black and white hole Steyn 's? It is showtime. The | :16:38. | :16:56.
Ferrari of the show. Big day yesterday. They've all done well. | :16:57. | :17:05.
They've done well, today is the highlight. You are experienced, | :17:06. | :17:09.
you've judged in Australia, New Zealand. What are you looking for in | :17:10. | :17:15.
a champion? It is the same, regardless of the colour of the cow, | :17:16. | :17:25.
I'm looking for a balanced cow. Just a good balanced dairy cow. We have | :17:26. | :17:30.
watched them all now, we've seen an amazing standard of dairy cow. I | :17:31. | :17:36.
think so, with all the breeds, they are all getting better, and it is so | :17:37. | :17:40.
good to see all the breeds being represented well. In this line-up, | :17:41. | :17:47.
they are all Welsh champions. Yes, owned by Welsh breeders, which is a | :17:48. | :17:52.
credit, because this show is getting prestigious, and we get all the best | :17:53. | :17:56.
cows from England and Scotland, they all want to win, so very happy to | :17:57. | :18:02.
seal the Welsh cows winning today. This is a nail-biting finish, it? | :18:03. | :18:07.
This is brilliant. I'm nervous myself and I'm not even showing! | :18:08. | :18:12.
Never has there been such a close finish. There is nothing to split | :18:13. | :18:21.
these two. Here he goes... He is going for the Holstein! Yes! | :18:22. | :18:29.
Congratulations. Well, that was a joy to watch that competition, thank | :18:30. | :18:33.
you for joining me. That was nerve wracking, and for someone who's got | :18:34. | :18:39.
a passion for cows, that was a joy to watch and a privilege to be | :18:40. | :18:44.
here. She has done it again! She's been better than I am! My heart | :18:45. | :18:49.
can't put up with this any longer. An emotional moment. Especially, | :18:50. | :18:55.
yes. To win the Best of the show, he is judged around the world, and | :18:56. | :18:59.
there is stiff competition, she had to be on top of her game today. | :19:00. | :19:04.
Glowing praise for her, she's an amazing cow. You could tell | :19:05. | :19:09.
yesterday and today, she wanted to win. She glided around the ring. She | :19:10. | :19:17.
did her best. Your heart is going? Yes, I can ease off a bit now! | :19:18. | :19:23.
There is such a rich and varied display here in the handicraft | :19:24. | :19:25.
A number of talented people have invested time | :19:26. | :19:29.
It is often skills like these that are passed down | :19:30. | :19:42.
The Hughes family from Ruthin in North Wales are no exception. | :19:43. | :19:52.
Three sisters who are competing here this year are Mared, Alaw and Lois, | :19:53. | :19:55.
and they've had the help of their grandmother to get here today. | :19:56. | :20:01.
You must be proud. I am. What competitions did you enter? Mask | :20:02. | :20:16.
comp and jewellery. I entered the jewellery, and cross stitch. It's | :20:17. | :20:24.
nice that you can all do it together. There's one little member | :20:25. | :20:27.
of this flock we haven't talked to yet. We will see how you got on now. | :20:28. | :20:37.
When I say flock, here it is. Meet Gethin the sheep. How did you make | :20:38. | :20:47.
on? I got egg boxes for the belly, plastic for the head, toilet paper | :20:48. | :20:52.
choose for the legs. He is fantastic and the judges must have thought so, | :20:53. | :20:57.
too, because you came second. And I can only imagine the mess at home. | :20:58. | :21:04.
It is a mess! But worth it? They've loved doing things since they were | :21:05. | :21:10.
tiny. Then blues started coming in, ripping paper. But they have always | :21:11. | :21:13.
loved making things with their hands. These traditional craft and | :21:14. | :21:19.
skills are very valuable to everyone and offers an insight into that | :21:20. | :21:23.
special understanding between generations in the same family. | :21:24. | :21:28.
One of the most quirky and inquisitive animals | :21:29. | :21:30.
They are such characters, and I'm here to meet | :21:31. | :21:35.
Aeron Edwards has been showing dairy goats at the Royal Welsh Show | :21:36. | :21:46.
for 15 years and keeps 20 at his farm near Aberystwyth. | :21:47. | :21:51.
He keeps the Anglo-Nubian breed and describes them | :21:52. | :21:57.
Yes, they are highly strung, they are their own person. The kids are | :21:58. | :22:13.
quite friendly. They are different. Just full of character, they must be | :22:14. | :22:18.
fantastic to work with. A challenge, this is one of the worst breeds to | :22:19. | :22:23.
breed to get the milk and everything because of their characters, but I | :22:24. | :22:28.
am getting there. So if they are so awkward, why do you choose the | :22:29. | :22:31.
Anglo-Nubian as the breed of Troy 's? I do know, I've got to have a | :22:32. | :22:38.
challenge in life. You have any colour with these, it was just | :22:39. | :22:44.
potluck. If it clicks with the right to mail, you're there, if you're | :22:45. | :22:50.
not, you are set back so I tried to be careful when I buy in the males. | :22:51. | :23:01.
I look at the bloodlines, because the females are very important. I've | :23:02. | :23:05.
been watching you compete, how did you get on? Very good. One of my | :23:06. | :23:12.
goats won the class. Selina was third. Another was fifth. What are | :23:13. | :23:18.
your plans for the future? Would you be returning to The Royal Welsh? | :23:19. | :23:23.
Definitely returning next year, hopefully. Well, I look forward to | :23:24. | :23:27.
catching up with you then. There are many traditional pig | :23:28. | :23:31.
breeds in the UK as well as the Welsh Pig - the Saddleback, | :23:32. | :23:33.
Tamworth and Gloucester Old Spot They are known | :23:34. | :23:37.
for their excellent meat qualities, and are often seen in the | :23:38. | :23:43.
Farmers Market area of the Royal We have reached the highlight | :23:44. | :23:46.
of the day for me, the Cob Stallion Classes and of course, | :23:47. | :23:50.
the overall Cob Championship. The George Prince of Wales Cup is | :23:51. | :23:53.
being given to the winner for the 90th time this year, but | :23:54. | :23:56.
what everyone wants to know is, who Already we have some winners. Mrs | :23:57. | :24:22.
P.M.Owen is giving out the prizes. In the breed mayor, eight years and | :24:23. | :24:32.
over, it went to the Jones family. They went head-to-head with overall | :24:33. | :24:37.
section 80. Again it went to the same family. Then over to the boys. | :24:38. | :24:46.
Coming up top was this horse and by Simon Bigley. | :24:47. | :24:48.
Now joining me is Owen Griffiths, a pharmacist by trade but a Welsh Cob | :24:49. | :24:51.
breeder, of the Ilar stud, Llanilar, Aberystwyth, by conviction. | :24:52. | :24:53.
Good to have you with me. We're watching the section D stallion | :24:54. | :25:07.
eight years and upwards, and this is Mrs P.M.Owen casting her practised | :25:08. | :25:11.
eye over them. What is your opinion? The stallion on top is a | :25:12. | :25:18.
very good example of the breed, he has a good front, the back, good | :25:19. | :25:24.
feet. Let's see what Mrs P.M.Owen decides. She seems to be hovering | :25:25. | :25:29.
over the one that has been put up third. The hat is off, she's made up | :25:30. | :25:37.
her mind, and it goes to Peter and Ann Jones. Let's talk about what is | :25:38. | :25:47.
happening in the Main Ring. We have the junior stallion, four to seven | :25:48. | :25:55.
years old. And then we have a senior stallion, eight years old and over. | :25:56. | :26:02.
The youngster has taken it. So, the Bigley 's will be very pleased with | :26:03. | :26:13.
that. They will be! Simon has taken the stallion championship, and next | :26:14. | :26:17.
to be up against the youngster from yesterday. Dutch bred. | :26:18. | :26:23.
She's made a decision. Fiery Jack has taken the main championship | :26:24. | :26:32.
So, the pinnacle. Yes, the climax. The female champion and the male. | :26:33. | :26:44.
They are up against each other for the overall Prince of Wales Cup. | :26:45. | :26:50.
The hat is off. That is the one the crowd was firmly behind. Yes, and in | :26:51. | :27:09.
reserve, Fiery Jack. You must be elated. The honour of winning the | :27:10. | :27:16.
Prince of Wales Cup. Winning the Prince of Wales is the highest | :27:17. | :27:21.
honour. You think, easy going to make it? Is he a good one? And then | :27:22. | :27:27.
I win it. No mistake, you have won it. Supermodel, you know, last issue | :27:28. | :27:37.
was a reserve, and this year she won it. Wonderful, well done. | :27:38. | :27:41.
Another electrifying day at the main ring and indeed | :27:42. | :27:43.
Some have made it, others were so close and others | :27:44. | :27:47.
But all have added and been a part of the unique drama that makes | :27:48. | :27:51.
And don't forget, we'll be back again tomorrow night | :27:52. | :27:57.
with a round-up of the final day's delights from the Show. | :27:58. | :28:03.
If you miss any of the programmes this week, or want | :28:04. | :28:05.
to watch them again, remember you can catch up on iPlayer. | :28:06. | :28:09.
But we leave you tonight with some of Wednesday's | :28:10. | :28:12. |
