Six days ago people went to a concert. 22 people, none of whom,

:00:12.:00:28.

would return home. Almost a week on from the attack,

:00:29.:00:34.

the heart of the city may have been broken but defiantly its spirit

:00:35.:00:38.

hasn't. The whole country, the whole world has been incredibly moved and

:00:39.:00:47.

hoping that the people of Manchester come together, united and strong.

:00:48.:00:51.

Hello and welcome to this proud and passionate city where thousands of

:00:52.:00:55.

runners, despite what has happened, take to the streets as part of the

:00:56.:00:59.

Great Manchester Run. Those words spoken so memorably by

:01:00.:01:06.

Tony Walsh will no doubt be carried by all around. This is the place, in

:01:07.:01:13.

the north-west of England, it ace, it's in the songs that we sing, from

:01:14.:01:19.

the bands in our bandstand, the whole planet shaking. Our inventions

:01:20.:01:26.

our legends. They make brilliant bands, we make goals that make souls

:01:27.:01:31.

leap from the stands. We make things from steel, and we make things from

:01:32.:01:36.

cotton, we make people laugh, and we make you feel whole, we make you

:01:37.:01:40.

feel welcome, we make something happen, we cannot seem to help it.

:01:41.:01:43.

And if you're looking for history then yes, we have a wealth. But the

:01:44.:01:52.

Manchester way is to make it yourself. And this is the place

:01:53.:01:57.

where we first played as kids. And this is the place where our folks

:01:58.:02:02.

came to work where they struggled in puddles. They hurt in the dirt. And

:02:03.:02:07.

they built us a city. They built us these towns. So this is the place

:02:08.:02:12.

now with kids of our own, some are born here, some drawn here. But we

:02:13.:02:17.

all call it home. And they've covered the cobbles but they'll

:02:18.:02:20.

never defeat all of the dreamers and schemers who still team through the

:02:21.:02:24.

streets. Because this is a place that has been through some hard

:02:25.:02:28.

times. Oppression, recession, depression and dark times. But we

:02:29.:02:32.

keep fighting back with the Manchester spirit. The northern

:02:33.:02:37.

greats. Manchester lyrics in these hard times...

:02:38.:02:39.

CHEERING In the streets of our city. But we

:02:40.:02:44.

won't take defeat. And we don't want your pity because this is the place

:02:45.:02:47.

where we stand strong together with a smile on our face. Mancunians

:02:48.:02:52.

forever. Because this is the place in our hearts, in our homes, because

:02:53.:02:57.

this is the place that a part of our bones. Because Manchester gives us

:02:58.:03:02.

such strength from the fact that this... Is the place.

:03:03.:03:09.

CHEERING We should give something back.

:03:10.:03:21.

Always remember, never forget, forever Manchester. Choose love,

:03:22.:03:22.

Manchester, thank you. Welcome to Manchester, everybody. A

:03:23.:04:13.

city that has been in the hearts and minds of all of us this week. And a

:04:14.:04:19.

place that today very much plans on showing everybody just what it is

:04:20.:04:24.

made of. I can tell you that the weather is almost perfect for a run

:04:25.:04:29.

today. It's cloudy, it's cool. With a risk of drizzle. It wouldn't be

:04:30.:04:33.

Manchester without it. But rain or shine the city is always going to be

:04:34.:04:37.

united today. And unity has definitely been the theme of this

:04:38.:04:41.

week. That poem you heard of the top of the programme resonated with so

:04:42.:04:45.

many people. The man behind those words, the words, when no one else

:04:46.:04:53.

had words, was Toby Walsh. Good morning to you. You have had the

:04:54.:04:56.

most unbelievable week. Overwhelming the response. Cloudy and cool.

:04:57.:05:03.

That's Manchester. Trying to show that. Many overwhelming things have

:05:04.:05:07.

happened this week. Many overwhelming things have happened to

:05:08.:05:12.

those families. Our thoughts are with them. That poem struck a chord.

:05:13.:05:17.

It has been around the world. An amazing and moving reaction in

:05:18.:05:21.

Manchester. It has given the city something to galvanise behind and it

:05:22.:05:25.

shows the spirit of the place. So many people will be thankful for it.

:05:26.:05:29.

People just beyond where you could see. Though that reaction was raw,

:05:30.:05:37.

today is a reaction, isn't it? Absolutely. Some young girls took it

:05:38.:05:43.

on themselves to pick up litter. There were young women in Saint Anne

:05:44.:05:48.

's Square giving free hugs to people who had nobody. I have seen signs

:05:49.:05:55.

saying free food. There were taxi drivers taking people home for free.

:05:56.:05:59.

There are people offering cups of tea for free. That's the real

:06:00.:06:03.

Manchester. You know this place. This is the place you call home.

:06:04.:06:08.

There is such a strong identity. People are so proud to come from

:06:09.:06:12.

here. A lot of this was basic human decency. It would have happened

:06:13.:06:16.

anywhere. But we like to think there is a spirit here coming from our

:06:17.:06:19.

history and community. We are galvanised in showing that this

:06:20.:06:23.

week. There was no doubt people would come out in their droves

:06:24.:06:27.

today. They are here. And you have another job today to do, haven't

:06:28.:06:32.

you? Yes, I wrote a poem to the run a couple of years ago. -- yes, I

:06:33.:06:38.

wrote a poem for the run a couple of years ago. I will perform it to the

:06:39.:06:44.

crowd today. It is a privilege. Agree to speak to you. Today will be

:06:45.:06:48.

special. For everybody who has used your guidance, thank you. Choose

:06:49.:06:55.

love is the message. We would like you to get involved. Details below.

:06:56.:07:15.

#runformanchester has had an amazing response. Louise MInchin has had an

:07:16.:07:22.

interesting week. She was here straight after those awful events on

:07:23.:07:26.

Monday night. She is here for the next few hours.

:07:27.:07:32.

We have both been together this morning to Saint and square. And

:07:33.:07:36.

what really struck me, being there, is that in this city still there are

:07:37.:07:43.

places of quiet contemplation where people are going to pay tribute and

:07:44.:07:49.

remember those victims. In contrast, just a couple of streets away I am

:07:50.:07:53.

surrounded by runners, people out on the streets, to lend their support.

:07:54.:08:00.

To stand up and be counted. They will make a difference today. The

:08:01.:08:04.

decision as to whether this run would go ahead was probably a tough

:08:05.:08:07.

one. Let's talk to a couple of guys in charge of that. Good morning. It

:08:08.:08:14.

is quite something to be standing here today. I have stood on the

:08:15.:08:18.

start line before. There is no fun excitement. Today a sense of

:08:19.:08:23.

determination. Yes. This is going to be a serious day today. Not a

:08:24.:08:28.

celebration, which it normally is. I think everybody will have the

:08:29.:08:32.

injured, the dead, their families in their thoughts. But everybody

:08:33.:08:37.

equally is coming out to say life in this city will go on as normal. We

:08:38.:08:42.

will continue. This is a fightback from the people of Manchester. And

:08:43.:08:45.

thousands of people from all over the country, as welcome who have

:08:46.:08:50.

come here today. Rendon, you felt compelled, this had to go ahead in

:08:51.:08:58.

some ways, didn't it? -- Brendan. Our request was all you in your

:08:59.:09:01.

hands. Richard then told me immediately that it was a case of if

:09:02.:09:10.

but how. We spent time with his team, police, emergency services, we

:09:11.:09:14.

spent the week wondering if we could go ahead. Here we are going ahead.

:09:15.:09:19.

We have had such fantastic leadership in this great city. If

:09:20.:09:26.

you look behind us the lead is only -- if you look behind us, the people

:09:27.:09:31.

of Manchester are next to them. It is amazing. As far as the eye can

:09:32.:09:35.

see Varane runners ready. We also had the city Games. -- as far as the

:09:36.:09:44.

eye can see we can see runners ready. People often stay away after

:09:45.:09:48.

something like this because there is fear. In this city people have been

:09:49.:09:53.

determined to conquer their fear and demonstrate their willingness to

:09:54.:09:56.

come out. On Friday night we had more people than ever to watch the

:09:57.:10:00.

city Games. Today Brendan was down at the finishing line for the

:10:01.:10:05.

children's run, the half marathon. The finish line is already packed

:10:06.:10:10.

out before this is even started. People absolutely determined to say

:10:11.:10:16.

a message of defiance, strength, and a message of being together, all

:10:17.:10:23.

ages, all races, all faiths. What else can we look out for? There is

:10:24.:10:29.

serious competition. Some of the greatest athletes, the greatest

:10:30.:10:34.

female athlete in history from Ethiopian, a world record holder,

:10:35.:10:37.

three times Olympic champion, she is on the start line. She said earlier

:10:38.:10:41.

that she does not speak great English and she said she is happy to

:10:42.:10:47.

be here in Manchester. Lots of messages from people around the

:10:48.:10:55.

world telling us thanks for going. Around the world people are looking

:10:56.:11:02.

to this. The leadership in Manchester, Richard and his team,

:11:03.:11:06.

have done an amazing job. We should all be proud of the leadership of

:11:07.:11:12.

the city but also behind us. Are you proud to be here today? Very proud

:11:13.:11:17.

to be here. Out of all of these people. The people lining the track,

:11:18.:11:22.

the people running, they do this city proud. Good luck to them all.

:11:23.:11:26.

Thank you for joining us. I know you have had an incredibly busy week.

:11:27.:11:32.

The elite athletes have come, thousands of other people are in the

:11:33.:11:37.

streets of Manchester to make their presence felt. It has really been

:11:38.:11:41.

buzzing here. The noise that has been browsing through the city of

:11:42.:11:44.

Manchester has been buzzing since the start of the morning. We have

:11:45.:11:49.

Denise Lewis and Jay charmers who will be speaking to those special

:11:50.:11:52.

people, every single one of them, for the duration of the programme.

:11:53.:11:57.

Over to you. We have been set the task of

:11:58.:12:01.

speaking to as many of these amazing runners as possible. This is your

:12:02.:12:09.

first time, isn't it? It is. What a special year to get to begin my

:12:10.:12:13.

journey. There is a really special energy in the air. It is defiance,

:12:14.:12:19.

it is strength, it is wonderful. Would you have your own personal

:12:20.:12:24.

account of living in an aftermath of such an atrocity? Six years ago

:12:25.:12:29.

today, I was in a coma, flying back from Afghanistan, I had been injured

:12:30.:12:40.

by an IED bomb blast. Sport helped me to recover. Mentally and

:12:41.:12:44.

physically. The best thing about days like today it reminds you that

:12:45.:12:48.

the best part of human strength is the ability to overcome adversity.

:12:49.:12:52.

That is what today is all about. You can feel the sense of the people

:12:53.:12:56.

overcoming the healing of this city. But also the individuals who will be

:12:57.:12:59.

looking to the crowd around to push them through the barrier. You know

:13:00.:13:03.

that better than anybody. Absolutely. It is about the people

:13:04.:13:08.

of Manchester. Unity and solidarity, defiance in the face of adversity.

:13:09.:13:17.

You are a great ambassador of that. It's a pleasure to speak to these

:13:18.:13:19.

people today. It's going to be fun. Back to you.

:13:20.:13:23.

We will be back to you shortly. Talking about special sporting

:13:24.:13:30.

occasions, these two have been in many. Just before you go off to do

:13:31.:13:34.

your own ten kilometres. I know it is nervous times for you, even

:13:35.:13:39.

though you have been in a cup final. I would like to point out that he is

:13:40.:13:42.

the one who has been in cup finals. I like that you are making are

:13:43.:13:48.

spread out to be sporting heroes, but he is the man. Many people will

:13:49.:13:52.

know that Manchester United were in Stockholm on Thursday for the

:13:53.:13:56.

regular league final. They won it. It was a special but emotional

:13:57.:14:03.

evening, wasn't it? Yes, everybody connected with United on the trip.

:14:04.:14:09.

They wanted a win for the city. Thankfully the lads put in a great

:14:10.:14:13.

performance. And deservedly won the trophy and dedicated it to everybody

:14:14.:14:19.

who lost their lives in Manchester. That is exactly what Manchester

:14:20.:14:23.

people are like. It's a great city. They pull together in adversity.

:14:24.:14:27.

Unfortunately these things happen throughout the world now. But

:14:28.:14:31.

thankfully United got into the Champions League and rewarded

:14:32.:14:36.

everybody. There is a feeling here today, as well, that people don't,

:14:37.:14:41.

people don't even have to talk about it today. There is a look and an

:14:42.:14:47.

acknowledgement of what has happened this week. And at the same time, a

:14:48.:14:52.

determination of everybody here to do this and do the city proud.

:14:53.:14:57.

Despite the sporting rivalry which splits this town into red and blue,

:14:58.:15:02.

there was a wonderful tweet sent out by Manchester City, earlier this

:15:03.:15:03.

week: Very simple and a lovely way of

:15:04.:15:12.

putting it. I was told today, the half marathon has already been run

:15:13.:15:16.

today, in the half marathon somebody told me they ran with a guy who had

:15:17.:15:23.

a city shirt on and a United scarf. That is what has happened. You have

:15:24.:15:27.

been in your fair share of rivalries. But it is a special

:15:28.:15:31.

place. Especially after something like that, this place comes

:15:32.:15:32.

together. This has been a growing event over

:15:33.:15:41.

the years and a fun day where everybody comes to enjoy themselves

:15:42.:15:46.

and participate for the different charities and. That is brilliant

:15:47.:15:51.

that people are coming out and hopefully everybody can just enjoy

:15:52.:15:56.

the day today. It was an emotional night in Stockholm, you are part of

:15:57.:15:59.

the coverage, and you talked about love and community, and stuff like

:16:00.:16:06.

that that unites cities. Yes, and I think lots of cities will feel the

:16:07.:16:16.

same as that happened in their city, leads: -- Leeds, Liverpool,

:16:17.:16:21.

Newcastle. Cities are built on friendships and communities and

:16:22.:16:23.

hopefully opportunities and Manchester is no different. As I

:16:24.:16:27.

said on Wednesday night and as Tony Wilson said, a huge great of this

:16:28.:16:31.

city, we just do things differently. You are both running for Manchester

:16:32.:16:36.

charities, the Christie Hospital and the Kirsty foundation. Yes, Kirsty's

:16:37.:16:43.

foundation has been going on for years and she's a wonderful girl so

:16:44.:16:46.

it is fantastic. Enjoy it, I'm sure you will. He was my Boyhood hero, I

:16:47.:16:54.

don't want to make him feel old! I can't stop smiling. We will enjoy

:16:55.:17:00.

this moment for as long as we can. This has been my home for many years

:17:01.:17:04.

and I'm sure these two will vouch for even after an atrocity like this

:17:05.:17:10.

on Monday night, nothing would break the people of Manchester. But at

:17:11.:17:16.

this. Events like the Great Manchester Run, it is important they

:17:17.:17:20.

are going ahead, people have been working towards this for months and

:17:21.:17:23.

it is an opportunity for people to come to Manchester and cheer

:17:24.:17:30.

everybody. Keep going, the -- pick ourselves up. We will stand together

:17:31.:17:35.

and keep going. I am immensely proud of Manchester and how people have

:17:36.:17:37.

rallied together to show their true spirit. All we want to have in

:17:38.:17:42.

Manchester is unity. People are not staying in their homes, they are not

:17:43.:17:47.

afraid to be two people in the streets, everybody has come together

:17:48.:17:51.

in a way that is really unique to Mancunians and Manchester. There is

:17:52.:17:56.

so much love in the city and there always will be. We are Manchester.

:17:57.:18:02.

We are Manchester. We are Manchester. We are Manchester. I am

:18:03.:18:12.

here with Peter Hook, so many of you will remember him as the bass player

:18:13.:18:16.

in Joy Division and New Order. You are running today. I am running yes,

:18:17.:18:21.

I was looking forward to it until I got woken up this morning by Ocado

:18:22.:18:33.

and I did not even order it! Important to run today? Yes, my

:18:34.:18:37.

daughter was at the Arena on Monday and she luckily got out, fantastic.

:18:38.:18:42.

Importance to support people and the grieving families, it is terrible.

:18:43.:18:46.

You had a heart stopping moment any parent would have. The phone call

:18:47.:18:51.

coming yes. My wife took it. I have never seen her crumbling in that

:18:52.:18:56.

way. I was terrified, it really was awful. Has ceded you know she was

:18:57.:19:04.

OK? She was home before it came on the TV. Her boyfriend this in

:19:05.:19:09.

Chorlton and his mother picked her up and she got through and she was

:19:10.:19:14.

in the car and she got out and she was in our house at 20 past 11. You

:19:15.:19:18.

think she is back and safe but she has suffered all week, feeling

:19:19.:19:23.

dreadful. I was at the hospital with her on Thursday and she is

:19:24.:19:29.

suffering. She will not be alone in that. No, there is thousands and my

:19:30.:19:33.

heart bleeds for the people and the parents that had to go through that.

:19:34.:19:38.

It feels so personal, I have lived in the Northwest for five years and

:19:39.:19:43.

we all know somebody who was there and she used to waiting at foyer.

:19:44.:19:48.

Yes, a newsstand with the ticket touts, I was allowed to wait to go

:19:49.:19:54.

to pick them up until she was 15 -- I used to stand. One of them was

:19:55.:20:01.

really badly injured, I heard. To go down and see the support that St

:20:02.:20:04.

Ann's Square, it is important to stick together and fight and do our

:20:05.:20:08.

bit to make it easier and better for the people suffering. You have done

:20:09.:20:14.

this run for many years. This is my 11th. There is a sense of excitement

:20:15.:20:20.

and nerves and a real determination and poignancy. Yes, the people are

:20:21.:20:24.

here to show support for everybody and it is fantastic. We're here for

:20:25.:20:28.

charitable causes which is important, sadly we have to support

:20:29.:20:32.

them and I am delighted to do Christie is again because it really

:20:33.:20:36.

needs it. But we are here and we will do our best and hopefully try

:20:37.:20:40.

and make everybody feel a little bit better. They're always tears at the

:20:41.:20:45.

finish line and I suspect there will be more. Yes. Thank you, what time

:20:46.:20:51.

do you hope to do is to mark somewhere under one hour! I think

:20:52.:20:55.

you are being modest, thank you very much and have a very good run.

:20:56.:20:59.

Thousands of people are behind us and ready to go. He is getting

:21:00.:21:05.

nervous, you go. Denise is down there with the crowds. Great to see

:21:06.:21:11.

you, I saw you on Friday night at the CityGames and I know you are not

:21:12.:21:16.

running here, what are you doing here? Showing my support and I will

:21:17.:21:20.

start some races so it will be interesting being on the starting

:21:21.:21:24.

side and not the running site. You are here Friday, the atmosphere was

:21:25.:21:29.

just incredible, what you think it will be like today? Amazing,

:21:30.:21:33.

regardless, the fans are showing their support, everybody is here and

:21:34.:21:36.

it will happen and we are making sure we stand firm and be strong for

:21:37.:21:41.

Manchester. It was important the athletes came, they wanted to be

:21:42.:21:45.

competing on Friday. Yes, definitely and happy the crowd is supporting

:21:46.:21:48.

also because we do not want to be in the street by ourselves with nobody

:21:49.:21:53.

to support so happy they came and we will do our best. The atmosphere is

:21:54.:22:00.

incredible and everybody is looking forward to seeing you. Yes,

:22:01.:22:03.

definitely, it's great Manchester is doing such a great job. We love this

:22:04.:22:08.

event and I hope it will be here for many more years. It's great to see

:22:09.:22:15.

you, as always. Thank you. I am with ours, this is your third attempt, is

:22:16.:22:20.

there a different energy? Yes, definitely, quite emotional and

:22:21.:22:23.

everybody has got the Mancunian spirits drunk so looking forward to

:22:24.:22:29.

that. Thinking of the 22 and their grieving families and my city and

:22:30.:22:33.

how they have pulled together any part of you felt like not coming? A

:22:34.:22:40.

little bit, I was worried about my family supporting the tiny babies

:22:41.:22:44.

but I believe in our city and we are stronger together and we need to be

:22:45.:22:49.

here together. Good luck and make a family proud. We have a regular face

:22:50.:22:57.

of the Great Manchester Run, Anthony Crolla with your boxing crew, you

:22:58.:23:01.

are running with friends today. Monday night, you had a member of

:23:02.:23:05.

your family at the concert. She all right? Yes, she is OK. She is

:23:06.:23:11.

possibly one of the luckiest girls in the world. That night, she saw

:23:12.:23:17.

some things nobody should have to see, never mind is 17-year-old girl.

:23:18.:23:23.

As horrible as it sounds, seeing a body parts and being covered in

:23:24.:23:27.

human flesh. Some of that will never leave her but she is doing well, she

:23:28.:23:34.

is a tough girl. She does not sound lucky, but she was the luckiest girl

:23:35.:23:39.

in the world that night. Like so many thousands here today, carrying

:23:40.:23:43.

gone that spirit and you have done this run a number of times and like

:23:44.:23:46.

every year, I'm sure it has a new meaning. I say it every year that

:23:47.:23:52.

this run, this weekend is the greatest in the calendar year for

:23:53.:23:55.

Manchester and despite what happens on Monday night, I believe it will

:23:56.:24:00.

be bigger and better than ever this year and you can see the

:24:01.:24:03.

togetherness of the city and the response, amazing. It makes you feel

:24:04.:24:09.

like the proudest Mancunian there is. Scott, these guys champions here

:24:10.:24:13.

and it would not take much to convince you to run today. I picked

:24:14.:24:19.

the phone upside I will be part of -- I picked the phone up and I said

:24:20.:24:23.

I would definitely be part of the team. We are out here and the great

:24:24.:24:30.

of Manchester, everybody pulling together, so happy to be part of

:24:31.:24:34.

this and running back best. You are warming up, we will not keep you

:24:35.:24:39.

much longer. Any minute now, they will take to the streets of

:24:40.:24:43.

Manchester, look out for them, I'm sure they will be fast. But quickly,

:24:44.:24:47.

a lot of people remember a couple of years ago you in hospital fighting

:24:48.:24:53.

for your life and this race was part of your rehabilitation and it was

:24:54.:24:57.

important for you to be here as part of Manchester and big budget route.

:24:58.:25:01.

Guess, that is what I meant about being a proud Mancunian. -- and they

:25:02.:25:09.

pulled Jeet through it. I can't do too much running but I make sure

:25:10.:25:13.

every year by do this run and so many great causes people to run for

:25:14.:25:19.

and that is why the city supports it the way it does. Enjoy it, you do

:25:20.:25:23.

every year and that is why you keep coming back. So much installed by

:25:24.:25:30.

you, this is what is coming up. -- so much in that store for you.

:25:31.:25:46.

So many people here to do this race. This is John Bishop. You are not

:25:47.:26:18.

going to run a bolster no, I just had stitches out my leg yesterday,

:26:19.:26:22.

that was not an excuse, I have no training. Ayn Rand this race ten

:26:23.:26:30.

years ago and I have not done a 10k since but I wanted to be among this

:26:31.:26:36.

body of people -- I ran. It has affected throughout the North West,

:26:37.:26:41.

throughout the cities? Yes, and it has shown what we are about, it has

:26:42.:26:45.

brought people together. For me personally, it Manchester gave me a

:26:46.:26:52.

every thing I hold dear. At Kent University here, I lived here over

:26:53.:26:57.

20 years, and met my wife here, had children here, started stand-up

:26:58.:27:00.

comedy here. Another venue and I have played it a number of times and

:27:01.:27:05.

I will do in the autumn. Everybody can imagine themselves in this

:27:06.:27:08.

position and it is what we are about. There is more of is done them

:27:09.:27:14.

and we will not get beat, this is what we are about. You say more of

:27:15.:27:19.

us, look down that road, it is extraordinary. And every person I

:27:20.:27:24.

had that decision whether to come or not this morning and they have made

:27:25.:27:29.

that decision as an act of defiance that we are bigger than you and we

:27:30.:27:34.

will not change what is dear to us. Everybody here and the supporters

:27:35.:27:39.

standing up and being counted. Yes, and unity. You look down the line

:27:40.:27:44.

and there is every creed and every colour and every size. People here

:27:45.:27:48.

making a statement and that statement will resonate across the

:27:49.:27:52.

country. You said you have run it before but it will be different

:27:53.:27:57.

today in many ways? Yes, because I will probably walk it! John, there

:27:58.:28:02.

is no shame in walking. It is totally different. This is not about

:28:03.:28:06.

the race all your time, it is about being here and that is what

:28:07.:28:11.

everybody feels. Thank you so much and you are here because one of your

:28:12.:28:15.

concerts was cancelled? Yes, I postponed a couple on Tuesday and

:28:16.:28:21.

Wednesday, and we had a We Love Manchester won last night, me and

:28:22.:28:24.

Jason Mumford, and we postponed that, but we will do it again -- and

:28:25.:28:34.

we had a charity gig last night. Good luck and enjoy it.

:28:35.:28:40.

John Bishop one of many faces that made sure they were here in

:28:41.:28:43.

Manchester to be part of this special occasion and we will speak

:28:44.:28:46.

to ask many as we can for the duration of the programme and the

:28:47.:28:52.

35,000 runners as part of the Manchester 10k. The excitement is

:28:53.:28:55.

steadily building and everybody is looking forward to getting started

:28:56.:28:59.

and it is almost time for the elite women's race, Brendan Foster already

:29:00.:29:04.

talked about the great Tirunesh Dibaba of Ethiopia and a contender

:29:05.:29:11.

for Great Britain, Gemma Steel. Steve Cram and Paula Radcliffe will

:29:12.:29:14.

be talking us through this. Thank you, good morning, everybody.

:29:15.:29:21.

But we will talk more about the masses when they get going in 15

:29:22.:29:24.

minutes but with the elite men. Before that, it is the opportunity

:29:25.:29:31.

for the elite women to set up in this very special event this year.

:29:32.:29:36.

We mentioned Tirunesh Dibaba to the left of the picture and she has a

:29:37.:29:43.

field, I don't think many of them will think they can beat Tirunesh

:29:44.:29:46.

Dibaba but they will all be looking for their own performances. Katrina

:29:47.:29:50.

Wootton, coming back to is a very good form and she ran well in the

:29:51.:29:55.

10,000 metre trials for the World Championships in London last week.

:29:56.:30:00.

But one of our great young talent is a couple of years ago and she's

:30:01.:30:03.

coming back into her own. Sophie Duarte, of France. But two very

:30:04.:30:09.

experienced French athletes here, form a cross-country champion and

:30:10.:30:15.

her team-mate, a couple of years older, in the over 40 bracket,

:30:16.:30:21.

Christelle Daunay, European marathon champion from 2014. Gemma Steel, it

:30:22.:30:30.

has been a difficult couple of years for her and it looked as though she

:30:31.:30:34.

really was having a burgeoning career on the roads and to the

:30:35.:30:38.

marathon and she has put the marathon to one side for the time

:30:39.:30:43.

being and she will take on one small the great Tirunesh Dibaba, the

:30:44.:30:46.

defending champion here in Manchester, it is so good to see her

:30:47.:30:50.

here in any year, but this year in particular. The stars coming out to

:30:51.:30:55.

support everybody else and they know they take second billing this

:30:56.:30:56.

morning. The way they go. The elite women's

:30:57.:31:24.

race gets underway. The roads are clear. A big crowd is expected. We

:31:25.:31:30.

can see them ourselves already out there. All along this route they

:31:31.:31:40.

will be cheered. It is a good morning from Paula Radcliffe. Good

:31:41.:31:46.

morning. I apologise, it is actually afternoon now. Good afternoon to

:31:47.:31:54.

everybody. Especially to the people out there waiting to support the

:31:55.:31:58.

runners around this course. And also waiting to get started. And to

:31:59.:32:01.

complete this event and complete this run. And to get on with what

:32:02.:32:08.

makes us all feel better. Just to show that we are going to carry on.

:32:09.:32:13.

And just to show that life goes on and to show the spirit, as well.

:32:14.:32:18.

Straightaway, it is good to see the fighting spirit, Katrina is in good

:32:19.:32:32.

shape and an old mate of mine from Bedford. She raced very well at

:32:33.:32:37.

Highgate in the British ten kilometres. She just missed

:32:38.:32:43.

qualifying. But she did qualify for the European cup in Minsk later this

:32:44.:32:47.

month. She will be hoping to improve on the time there. She probably will

:32:48.:32:54.

not stay with the favourite for long, but it is good to say. This is

:32:55.:33:00.

the familiar route. Hats off to everybody. We will talk about this

:33:01.:33:05.

later, but it has been a big logistical exercise to make sure the

:33:06.:33:09.

event goes ahead today. It is the same route. A couple of changes

:33:10.:33:14.

around Old Trafford. That is when they know they have reached halfway.

:33:15.:33:19.

They turn around the Salford quays area. Then just across the way, when

:33:20.:33:27.

they come back to Mancunian Way, they will see the runners going in

:33:28.:33:34.

the opposite direction. 35,000 people here, not everybody can be on

:33:35.:33:37.

the course at the same time, but those roads will become covered with

:33:38.:33:40.

runners for the duration of the afternoon. This is Deansgate. Friday

:33:41.:33:55.

was emotional. It was a great afternoon. A lot of the elite

:33:56.:33:58.

athletes said how delighted they are to be here.

:33:59.:34:09.

There is always a quarry contingent here. We are on any moment... To be

:34:10.:34:19.

fair, everybody would want to be near you guys. -- there is always a

:34:20.:34:29.

Corrie contingent here. It's been an emotional week for everybody.

:34:30.:34:35.

Especially for you guys. It was a heartfelt reaction you had on Monday

:34:36.:34:41.

night, wasn't it? It really was. We all went into work on Tuesday. The

:34:42.:34:47.

place is normally chipper and happy. We'll -- and we all greet each other

:34:48.:34:58.

normally. It was a different vibe. You guys have decided to do

:34:59.:35:01.

something on the set to commemorate the 22, haven't you? Yes, we have a

:35:02.:35:07.

bench going on Coronation Street, which will be dedicated to the 22

:35:08.:35:12.

people who lost their lives. It is so important for us to do this. We

:35:13.:35:16.

are in Manchester programme, we are Manchester people, we have been

:35:17.:35:21.

affected just like everybody else here today. Lots of people will know

:35:22.:35:30.

about Martyn Hett, one of the people who died, who was a massive fan of

:35:31.:35:35.

Coronation Street. He was a big fan of Deidre Barlow. I met him once. He

:35:36.:35:42.

showed me his tattoo of Deidre Barlow. I didn't know what to say.

:35:43.:35:46.

Everybody who knew him knew he was a lovely lad and we will all miss him.

:35:47.:35:55.

He was one of the guys everybody talked about having his life cut

:35:56.:35:59.

short. He lived life to the fullest. A lot of you are running for the

:36:00.:36:04.

Manchester Children's Hospital. The fact there were so many children

:36:05.:36:11.

affected, as well. We were already running for the Children's Hospital

:36:12.:36:15.

prior to what happened on Monday. But now we feel that it is even more

:36:16.:36:18.

of a reason for us to get behind the hospital. A lot of the sick children

:36:19.:36:25.

were taken there. And the care they have given has just been

:36:26.:36:29.

unbelievable. We are proud to be running for them today. It is great

:36:30.:36:34.

to see all of you. I know it gets competitive onset, but let's see if

:36:35.:36:39.

we can keep it as civil as possible. Keep it under wraps. Great to see

:36:40.:36:46.

you. Denise? Tell me who you are running for.

:36:47.:36:54.

This is my mum's first-ever ten K. I'm proud of her. We are here to

:36:55.:37:01.

support her. Running for a cancer charity is really personal for us.

:37:02.:37:06.

We started doing this race about four years ago. This is a personal

:37:07.:37:09.

day. The charity is close to our hearts. Mum, are you feeling

:37:10.:37:18.

nervous? Not yet but I think I might be shortly when it starts. Batman

:37:19.:37:29.

said you are an important person. It has been a real challenge. I am

:37:30.:37:35.

looking forward to it, really. This is your own personal challenge but

:37:36.:37:39.

you're also raising money for this fantastic charity. Definitely. And

:37:40.:37:43.

they are going to spur you on, the supergiants. We will try, we will

:37:44.:37:53.

try and keep up. We might have to fly. It is great to be part of this

:37:54.:37:59.

atmosphere today? Always fantastic. After everything that has happened.

:38:00.:38:03.

The people are out. You can feel the love of it all. It is a great crowd,

:38:04.:38:16.

as ever. Fantastic. Enjoy it. A great bunch of super heroes there.

:38:17.:38:21.

Everybody a superhero today. And in terms of athletics, one of the

:38:22.:38:24.

greatest of all time is already out there. Katrina stayed with her in

:38:25.:38:32.

the early stages. Very brave. She really has attacked this early

:38:33.:38:48.

on. Yes, she is up on a course record pace. When she ran it she ran

:38:49.:38:52.

slow in the first half. She is well up on that pace. If the wind has not

:38:53.:38:58.

changed since my run this morning, she was running into a headwind,

:38:59.:39:03.

which makes it more impressive. Katrina tried to go with her but she

:39:04.:39:08.

has settled back. That means Katrina will be running on her own for the

:39:09.:39:12.

rest of this race pretty much because she is well ahead of the

:39:13.:39:16.

chasing pack behind her. It is currently being

:39:17.:39:29.

led by... Let's go back to the start of the race with Louise.

:39:30.:39:37.

I know you can see this on your television. It is heart stopping in

:39:38.:39:42.

some ways to look at this beautiful street and see so many thousands of

:39:43.:39:50.

people behind us. Having done this run myself a couple of times before,

:39:51.:39:55.

this is a nervous and exciting moment. At every single person you

:39:56.:39:59.

can see has made their own individual decision when they woke

:40:00.:40:06.

up this morning to come out and less than a week after that horrific

:40:07.:40:09.

attack, to come out here onto the streets of Manchester. It is a

:40:10.:40:22.

poignant moment. Over in St Ann's Square there was quiet,

:40:23.:40:25.

contemplation, and still people in tears this morning as they go there

:40:26.:40:30.

to pay tribute to the victims. I am going to tell you what is going to

:40:31.:40:35.

happen. There will be a minute's silence before every single wave in

:40:36.:40:39.

this race today. We will take that first minute 's silence. We will

:40:40.:40:44.

stay with the runners as they do that. And we will also hear the

:40:45.:40:50.

words from Tony Walsh. He will be reading the poem called Do

:40:51.:40:59.

Something. We will now have a minute's silence for the victims of

:41:00.:41:00.

the attack. Thank you, Manchester.

:41:01.:42:35.

APPLAUSE As we know, as we've shown the

:42:36.:42:43.

world, this is the place where we do something. Do something to show them

:42:44.:42:48.

what you're made of. Do something you've never done before. Do

:42:49.:42:54.

something to be what you're afraid of. Do something to make your

:42:55.:43:02.

spirits soar. Do something to get your heartbeat pounding, pounding,

:43:03.:43:06.

pounding. Do something with all your heart and soul and rock and roll. Do

:43:07.:43:12.

something to show we are astounding. Do something and this is how we

:43:13.:43:21.

roll. Do something to match a city's greatness. Do something through

:43:22.:43:26.

sunshine and through rain. Do something to say we need to hate

:43:27.:43:33.

less. Do something through courage and through pain. Do something for

:43:34.:43:38.

someone that you care for. Do something to help out with the cost.

:43:39.:43:44.

Do something for someone that you're there for. Do something for someone

:43:45.:43:49.

that you've lost. Do something to tell someone you love them. Do

:43:50.:43:55.

something then for someone who has gone. Do something for those with

:43:56.:43:59.

none above them. Do something for someone who lives on. Do something

:44:00.:44:05.

to stand out from the crowd. Do something to keep a dream alive. Do

:44:06.:44:12.

something to make a city proud and do something to shout hope will

:44:13.:44:18.

survive. Do something to show you don't surrender. We don't surrender.

:44:19.:44:24.

Do something for those we owe a debt. We thank you. Do something a

:44:25.:44:31.

city will remember. Do something the world will not forget. Do something

:44:32.:44:38.

for this great city's story. Do something and show them how it's

:44:39.:44:43.

done. Do something for love. In all its glory. Do something, for greater

:44:44.:44:55.

Manchester, do something, the Great Manchester Run, and make it live

:44:56.:45:01.

forever. Do something, the Great Manchester Run. Choose love. Have a

:45:02.:45:05.

fantastic Manchester day. APPLAUSE

:45:06.:45:13.

Ladies and gentlemen, Tony Walsh, AKA Longfella. Inspiring words from

:45:14.:45:21.

Tony Walsh. Lots has been written and said about the resolve of

:45:22.:45:25.

Manchester this week. Now it is their chance to show their unity and

:45:26.:45:30.

determination to carry on. It will begin one step at a time that they

:45:31.:45:34.

will move forward. And today they all move forward together.

:45:35.:45:40.

Individually, but as one. It is all about 35,000 taking part and the

:45:41.:45:43.

rest of the city hosting them. Also appreciate the elite athletes at the

:45:44.:45:48.

front. Here we go, the Great Manchester Run!

:45:49.:46:01.

And there will be an outpouring of emotion at the end for most of these

:46:02.:46:16.

people but for the next 10k, it is a chance for them to reflect and for

:46:17.:46:21.

everybody watching. It is also a chance to show what this city is

:46:22.:46:25.

about, what it is made of and what its people are about. As we have

:46:26.:46:30.

been saying all morning, it is simply incredible that so many have

:46:31.:46:36.

turned up here today. They have not been cowed by events. They are

:46:37.:46:42.

respectful and they remember all of those who suffered so tragically.

:46:43.:46:49.

And the city has been an inspiring place to be over the last two days.

:46:50.:46:56.

And of course, they are not all Mancunians. They have come from

:46:57.:47:00.

around the UK and some have come from different parts of the world.

:47:01.:47:07.

And nobody wanted to miss this special day. And a special word

:47:08.:47:20.

should be given not only to those who organised the event and of

:47:21.:47:26.

course it has been a week of a lot of hard work for people, but I think

:47:27.:47:30.

what everybody is saying, as ever, it is the emergency services and who

:47:31.:47:35.

were challenged so much this week. And also, there are a big part of

:47:36.:47:42.

today and so many thanks going to them from all of these people and

:47:43.:47:49.

people watching as well. But the event goes on, as it has done in the

:47:50.:47:57.

over the last few years. An event which has grown with the city, and

:47:58.:48:01.

an event which has always shown of the best of Manchester. But today,

:48:02.:48:14.

more so than ever. Apollo, you said you out running this morning, and

:48:15.:48:18.

running is such a big part of hearing for a lot of people. When we

:48:19.:48:24.

see big events like this, and we always say it's great to see so many

:48:25.:48:29.

people out running, but you and I, this is how we end our living for

:48:30.:48:34.

some years. Today, and other occasions, we think about the Boston

:48:35.:48:38.

Marathon a couple of years ago and it is a way for people to show their

:48:39.:48:44.

love for the city and their respect as I said earlier for all those who

:48:45.:48:51.

suffered. Yes, absolutely. I think sport and running in particular

:48:52.:48:54.

demonstrates humanity in a way that will always come back to the fall

:48:55.:49:01.

and so many people bold turned to running to celebrate happiness and

:49:02.:49:04.

to heal and to recover and show that spirit will go under and it will

:49:05.:49:08.

fight on and humanity, will always be stronger than acts which try and

:49:09.:49:18.

defeat that human spirit -- that spirit will go on. To celebrate

:49:19.:49:24.

today and get along the course even if they are not taking part and in

:49:25.:49:30.

their own new quake, to move on in a way that will always remember those

:49:31.:49:36.

people, those people who suffered. To show that human spirit which will

:49:37.:49:49.

always win. Where we will be concentrating today is the masses

:49:50.:49:51.

but we should not ignore the elite racers. We have that here in

:49:52.:49:57.

Tirunesh Dibaba in one of the greatest, if not the greatest

:49:58.:50:02.

distance runner. And she is going quick and that is the time she set

:50:03.:50:07.

when she made the record here. She did speed up dramatically in the

:50:08.:50:13.

second part. She started quick today. Katrina Wootton with her for

:50:14.:50:17.

the first kilometre but she has dropped back and is being chased by

:50:18.:50:21.

the group with the two French athletes Christelle Daunay and

:50:22.:50:28.

Tirunesh Dibaba and Gemma Steel and Mitchell from Ireland. Katrina

:50:29.:50:32.

Wootton looking glowingly in second place and those chasing her 20

:50:33.:50:36.

seconds behind at the moment. She may be able to rally and catch, but

:50:37.:50:43.

Tirunesh Dibaba looking very strong. It is only five or six weeks since

:50:44.:50:47.

that incredible run of hers in the London Marathon where she pretty

:50:48.:50:52.

much run to complete exhaustion and she was in a lot of difficulty in

:50:53.:50:56.

the closing mile. She is bouncing back now and that is has six

:50:57.:51:02.

kilometre in 3:2. So picking up as she did join the course record and

:51:03.:51:08.

she has recovered fully almost from the London Marathon and she is ready

:51:09.:51:12.

to build on that and to begin her tracks campaign with earnest. She is

:51:13.:51:18.

shifting along and that is one of the quickest kilometres. She looks

:51:19.:51:24.

behind and there is nothing to see. She will see the elite men in the

:51:25.:51:27.

opposite direction and that might be what she saw, she had a look at the

:51:28.:51:33.

showers, not quite a day for the showers. It is perfect. Ore said we

:51:34.:51:39.

have nice temperatures for racing and a little bit of a breeze. It was

:51:40.:51:44.

quite windy in Manchester yesterday, but that has settled down. Tirunesh

:51:45.:51:51.

Dibaba very much, as Paula were saying, after the London Marathon,

:51:52.:51:55.

she has her sights set on the marathon these days, but she is

:51:56.:52:00.

still a real talent is to be reckoned with on the roads as well

:52:01.:52:07.

over ten kilometres. Anything under 31 minutes is very good, obviously.

:52:08.:52:12.

I don't think she will be far away from that. Her record of 30, it

:52:13.:52:19.

would be something if she was to achieve that. Something around 31

:52:20.:52:23.

minutes is probably more likely. When she ran that, she came back...

:52:24.:52:31.

She is not far from that, but maintain that over the next four

:52:32.:52:36.

kilometres is tough and it is like a training run for her from this

:52:37.:52:40.

point, although she will have a lot of support. But it is hard to keep

:52:41.:52:46.

pushing when you are bouncing back from a marathon she ran a couple of

:52:47.:52:51.

weeks ago and also when you had the race won and real focus is on

:52:52.:52:57.

building for the season ahead. This is cutting back to the European

:52:58.:52:59.

marathon champion from 2014 Christelle Daunay who has Katrina

:53:00.:53:06.

Wootton in her sights. And hopefully Katrina can rally a bed and stay

:53:07.:53:12.

with her, but Christelle Daunay looking strong, she has been running

:53:13.:53:15.

strongly in a long time, her personal best times all run since

:53:16.:53:21.

2010 so she came on the very late in her career, but maintaining that

:53:22.:53:26.

form. This is the front of the men's race, we did not get a chance to

:53:27.:53:33.

talk about the men's runners. That is Dathan Ritzenhein. Birmingham,

:53:34.:53:40.

the tall figure from Australia. At the back of the group, Andy Vernon.

:53:41.:53:45.

And Wilson Kipsang, the winner of the London Marathon and win of the

:53:46.:53:49.

Tokyo Marathon the ship. He will not be contesting the World

:53:50.:53:53.

Championships. And also in there, Stephen Mokoka. They are not hanging

:53:54.:54:02.

around. Dathan Ritzenhein deciding the good policy for him today is to

:54:03.:54:08.

get out and to lead this. That is the way that Dathan Ritzenhein runs

:54:09.:54:12.

most of his races, he got sit out and he gets out there and does a

:54:13.:54:19.

runner does, he personifies that Manchester fighting spirit. He lays

:54:20.:54:25.

it all on the line. Into a strong headwind, he is pushing hard in this

:54:26.:54:28.

race and dragging the others with him. Early stages of the men's race,

:54:29.:54:35.

Tirunesh Dibaba heading down in the opposite direction the dual

:54:36.:54:38.

carriageway, but back to the start with Louise. I am here with the

:54:39.:54:45.

outgoing Lord Mayor who is very famous around these parts and the

:54:46.:54:48.

incoming Mayor and now the new Mayor of Manchester City macro. --

:54:49.:54:56.

Manchester, Andy Burnham. An extraordinary day to be here in

:54:57.:55:01.

Manchester. It is an extraordinary day to be here, this is the spirit

:55:02.:55:05.

of Manchester you can feel. The people are sending a message to the

:55:06.:55:09.

terrorists and extremists, you are not going to beat us and change who

:55:10.:55:13.

we are and what we do and we are going to move forward from here

:55:14.:55:17.

together. It has been an exceptionally difficult week for

:55:18.:55:21.

everybody. This place will get through it and go forward together.

:55:22.:55:27.

You are very fond of this city. Yes, this is the 15th year of the run for

:55:28.:55:31.

Manchester, the Great Manchester Run. It brings the crowds out. And

:55:32.:55:36.

the different charities. Originally, I was running for the We Love

:55:37.:55:41.

Manchester We Love Manchester and dandy for the homeless charity we

:55:42.:55:44.

set up and it was more poignant to come together and raise money for

:55:45.:55:50.

the We Love Manchester emergency funds with the red crows -- with the

:55:51.:55:55.

Red Cross and the Manchester Evening News. But yesterday, it was ?5.7

:55:56.:55:59.

million that was raised. Everybody has their own reasons for running

:56:00.:56:03.

today but I think this was really important for the people of

:56:04.:56:06.

Manchester and so many people came to say they were running it as a fun

:56:07.:56:10.

run and now they are raising money as well, so really important and

:56:11.:56:16.

that brings a city together. Leg different things going on in the

:56:17.:56:22.

city. St Ann's Square is still in place for moments of quiet. Yes, it

:56:23.:56:26.

is. People are responding in the way they want to respond. Everybody is

:56:27.:56:31.

feeling the togetherness and being with each other and being around the

:56:32.:56:35.

city together. That is really helping people through what is a

:56:36.:56:38.

difficult time. Next week, we have to move on again and we need to

:56:39.:56:43.

start talking about how we go forward from here and how we work

:56:44.:56:47.

together to tackle the extremism in our society. In a way that is due to

:56:48.:56:52.

Manchester, which is not about letting the terrorists or people

:56:53.:56:56.

divide us. We have to hold onto the spirit this week. And everybody

:56:57.:57:01.

behind us, and look at the thousands, they will have made their

:57:02.:57:04.

own individual decisions about why they want to be here. I know, and

:57:05.:57:08.

they are making a point of being here and last night, young people

:57:09.:57:14.

made a statement they wanted to be there. They are saying you are not

:57:15.:57:18.

going to changes, and that is such a powerful message to send out this

:57:19.:57:23.

weekend. Always an amazing atmosphere, not what you expect

:57:24.:57:29.

today? I'm expecting about 52, 55, timewise. That is what I said

:57:30.:57:34.

originally. You can hear a heavy cold and this is my politician's

:57:35.:57:40.

excuse I am getting in first! I can't believe I am hearing this! You

:57:41.:57:45.

can, how many politicians have you interviewed over the years? But I

:57:46.:57:49.

will give it my best. We're hoping for the smiles at the end of the

:57:50.:57:53.

race. I've been there will be a mixture and emotions will come out,

:57:54.:57:57.

but that is a good thing and people should let their emotions out -- I

:57:58.:58:01.

think there will be a mixture. A lot of people have been his and Tuesday

:58:02.:58:05.

morning and this is the first time a lot of people who have come to the

:58:06.:58:08.

city since Monday night to show defiance and to see what it is about

:58:09.:58:13.

and that is what is really important, but that everybody has

:58:14.:58:17.

come together and we are united. I can't speak to any more, you have a

:58:18.:58:23.

race to run. JJ is out in the crowd with so many different people. I am

:58:24.:58:28.

with Chorlton runners, they are local to this. This must be an

:58:29.:58:35.

important occasion today. This, this week's events, they have come home.

:58:36.:58:41.

We have decided to wear these patches in solidarity, we are doing

:58:42.:58:44.

what we love and we will carry on with life as normal which is

:58:45.:58:49.

important. We will run proud. But you will be running together or

:58:50.:58:53.

going for personal times? We might start off together, not sure how we

:58:54.:58:58.

will finish! We will give it a go! Is there really is a special energy

:58:59.:59:06.

around here today? Yes, with the emotions and everything, it is this

:59:07.:59:12.

week. Because we are all local and it means so much, yes, it is going

:59:13.:59:15.

to be emotional. I take it there was no part of you

:59:16.:59:24.

that thought about not coming today? Not at all, no, we are all here in

:59:25.:59:29.

solidarity to give out a message to everybody. You can't let things like

:59:30.:59:33.

this stop you live in your normal life, you can't allow it. Best of

:59:34.:59:37.

luck today, hopefully you will finish together and I'm sure you

:59:38.:59:41.

will cheer each other on at the finish line regardless.

:59:42.:59:46.

Good luck to the Chorlton crew, in the men's race, it is as she were,

:59:47.:59:53.

those five still at the front, Birmingham doing his stint with

:59:54.:00:00.

Dathan Ritzenhein. At Wilson Kipsang going well. But dropping off, Andy

:00:01.:00:06.

Vernon. He will be running in a couple of weeks' time to get the

:00:07.:00:10.

10,000 metre qualifying time for the World Championships. So they are

:00:11.:00:15.

approaching halfway, the men. In the women's race, it is all about

:00:16.:00:20.

Tirunesh Dibaba and she has been getting quicker towards the end. We

:00:21.:00:24.

said she would aim at around 31 minutes and she will be very close

:00:25.:00:28.

to that, she's into the last kilometre and she will soon be able

:00:29.:00:31.

to see the railway bridge on the opposite side of en Deansgate and

:00:32.:00:37.

that is about 200m to go, not long before she will be able to see that.

:00:38.:00:42.

And another display from Tirunesh Dibaba,, as strong as ever and

:00:43.:00:48.

clicking along at about 35 per kilometre.

:00:49.:00:54.

She looks nowhere near term full effort. The closing stages of the

:00:55.:01:03.

London Marathon, we remember, she was struggling and pushing her body.

:01:04.:01:06.

She looks different. She obviously recovered. Textbook display of how

:01:07.:01:13.

to bounce back from that and get your legs turning over at a quicker

:01:14.:01:17.

speed in preparation for the track season. It is important for her to

:01:18.:01:24.

move on from that and support Manchester, as well. She will be

:01:25.:01:28.

aiming for the finishing line. She would have had a time in mind to

:01:29.:01:33.

shoot close to. But she would have just wanted to see that her legs

:01:34.:01:45.

were responding well. Wootton is paying for starting off so fast, she

:01:46.:01:49.

has come back at it. This is just under the railway bridge. I can see

:01:50.:01:53.

the crowd or move into the barriers to cheer Tirunesh Dibaba. This is a

:01:54.:02:00.

familiar sight in Manchester. They are so pleased she is here, along

:02:01.:02:05.

with everybody else, of course. Tirunesh Dibaba sprinting home as

:02:06.:02:09.

she always manages to do. Still looking pretty fresh. She wins the

:02:10.:02:18.

great Manchester ten K just outside 31 minutes. Maybe no harder than a

:02:19.:02:23.

training run, but by anybody's standards that is world-class

:02:24.:02:27.

racing. A little smile from Tirunesh Dibaba. Another superb performance

:02:28.:02:32.

from her. Acknowledging the crowd. She has friends of the crowd, as

:02:33.:02:37.

well. She has become a great friend of Manchester. I'm sure she would

:02:38.:02:40.

not have wanted to have missed this race today. Bishoo is also an

:02:41.:02:50.

Arsenal fan. She will have been happy watching yesterday. -- she is

:02:51.:02:55.

also an Arsenal fan. Quickly back in the men's race. Pushing on hard

:02:56.:03:01.

here. Birmingham in the centre, the tall figure in blue and pink, was

:03:02.:03:07.

pushing it on a little bit earlier. Now it is the South African multiple

:03:08.:03:14.

champion over multiple distances. He knows these Manchester streets very

:03:15.:03:19.

well. He is keeping the pace honest and moving along strongly to the 250

:03:20.:03:27.

range. He has picked up a 249 and a 246. A respectable pace. And Lagat

:03:28.:03:39.

is bouncing back. He raced in Monza a couple of weeks ago.

:03:40.:04:07.

She is applauding the crowd. A great gesture from the Frenchwoman. France

:04:08.:04:14.

have had so many atrocities to deal with. The Diamond league had to

:04:15.:04:24.

follow on. Many of the athletes are aware of that atrocity on that

:04:25.:04:29.

particular occasion. Daunay applauding the home crowd. Wootton,

:04:30.:04:41.

as well. A tough race for Katrina. She had a real go with Tirunesh

:04:42.:04:47.

Dibaba. Jenner, a pretty solid run from her, she comes over the line in

:04:48.:04:59.

this place. -- Gemma, a pretty solid run from her. You would be excused

:05:00.:05:03.

for thinking that Tirunesh Dibaba had not been out for a fast run this

:05:04.:05:07.

morning. She looks relaxed. But she always looks like that. All

:05:08.:05:11.

throughout her track career. And now even when she is running the

:05:12.:05:14.

marathon. It is difficult to tell when she is tired. Thing is warming

:05:15.:05:27.

up in the men's race. Lagat enjoying racing on the roads in the latter

:05:28.:05:31.

part of his career. Does not have to worry about the speed on the cake.

:05:32.:05:34.

But if he is hanging around towards the end he will be looking to use

:05:35.:05:43.

that. Mokoka not running that well over the winter. But he did a pretty

:05:44.:05:48.

good ten K in South Africa recently. Much better than the performances he

:05:49.:05:53.

had had up to that. The last race showing he has been coming back into

:05:54.:06:05.

it. His exploits in the marathon have been disappointing recently. A

:06:06.:06:10.

non-finisher in the American trials last year. I think in New York he

:06:11.:06:14.

didn't finish in October. A difficult year. Yes, David is one of

:06:15.:06:22.

those athletes who has really struggled, showing huge potential,

:06:23.:06:25.

but he is probably the perfect half marathon runner. He has struggled to

:06:26.:06:29.

move up to the marathon distance. He suffered a lot with cramp, getting

:06:30.:06:35.

his refuelling strategy is right. But he is a formidable race over ten

:06:36.:06:40.

kilometres and the half marathon. He started his career with success back

:06:41.:06:50.

in 2001. He was on the podium. For an American Junior coming through,

:06:51.:06:54.

it was a big deal. He has built on his career, but has not been able to

:06:55.:07:00.

reflect that on the world stage, or at Olympic level. When he races in

:07:01.:07:06.

events like this it shows how much he is prepared to fight. It is all

:07:07.:07:15.

about the management of the race, rather than racing the clock, which

:07:16.:07:23.

is important, as he is realising. Lagat looks comfortable. He has been

:07:24.:07:26.

watching the runners in the opposite direction. I the others aware of

:07:27.:07:35.

that. Mokoka had a look. Lagat looks the most comfortable at this stage.

:07:36.:07:44.

Before a ten K, you would do a three kilometres and a five kilometres. He

:07:45.:07:50.

did that. And he said he would push on hard and make the others race to

:07:51.:07:57.

the line. Help his countrymen as much as possible. He was doing that

:07:58.:08:02.

in his training. He was talking about wanting to come here and

:08:03.:08:08.

perform well. It has always been enjoyment for Lagat. But now he can

:08:09.:08:14.

pick the events which means something to him and enjoy doing

:08:15.:08:19.

that. He is very much doing that today. The guys around him will be

:08:20.:08:23.

very aware he is sitting in the middle and he is, by far, the

:08:24.:08:25.

quickest finisher of the three. Ritzenheim pushing on. Will it be

:08:26.:08:59.

his year? Will Lagat, could do it? Meanwhile, back at the start, we

:09:00.:09:03.

have different waves, as you are probably aware, lots of people

:09:04.:09:08.

taking part. This is the Manchester United versus T Way -- this is the

:09:09.:09:15.

Manchester United versus this is the Manchester University

:09:16.:09:33.

way. Do you think you will keep your mask on all the way round? Maybe,

:09:34.:09:39.

maybe halfway. It would be success if you manage to keep it on?

:09:40.:09:46.

Definitely. How has today been? It has been good. I went to Saint and

:09:47.:09:53.

square. It was touching. Hammy times have you done this? -- I went to

:09:54.:09:59.

Saint Anne 's Square. Six, seven times. -- I went to St Ann's Square,

:10:00.:10:17.

it was touching, it was sad. How many times have you done this? Six,

:10:18.:10:31.

seven times. Best of luck, Leonardo. Ritzenheim is really pushing. Lagat

:10:32.:10:45.

is hovering. He is working hard but he knows every step is moving into

:10:46.:10:49.

his territory. Because in the last 200 metres would be surprised if he

:10:50.:10:53.

did not break away. But he is his best. Ritzenheim is no slouch. Lagat

:10:54.:11:05.

is really fast. But it is different to finishing 1500 metres on a track.

:11:06.:11:15.

He knows he has less than three minutes of running. He needs to

:11:16.:11:21.

throw everything at Lagat to get some daylight. If he is still

:11:22.:11:25.

sitting on his shoulder, or moving alongside him, as he is threatening

:11:26.:11:32.

to do now, then Ritzenheim is in trouble. When you have been running

:11:33.:11:46.

as fast Lagat as, an Olympic medallist, showing that 1500 metres

:11:47.:11:55.

runners are endurance athletes. But on the roads, at this pace, he is

:11:56.:12:03.

competitive. For Ritzenheim, it has always been around

:12:04.:12:16.

the 2.45 mark. Mokoka looks tired. The tall Australian has not raced

:12:17.:12:34.

that much in 2017. He is chasing down for third. Lagat Cannot hold

:12:35.:12:43.

on. Ritzenheim has done what he has been trying to do. He cannot hold

:12:44.:12:59.

on. He hasn't got it yet because Lagat is still going. You can see

:13:00.:13:03.

how much it means to Ritzenheim. It has been a turbulent time for him.

:13:04.:13:08.

Lots of things going on back in the US. Very happy to come here and let

:13:09.:13:13.

his feet and legs do the talking and go out and race hard and run away

:13:14.:13:16.

from that and celebrate it with a strong run here. Ritzenheim from the

:13:17.:13:26.

USA. Not a lot to cheer over the last 12 months. But he had a big win

:13:27.:13:30.

at the American road championships. And he has come to Manchester on

:13:31.:13:34.

this emotional day. And what they win it is going to be for him. He

:13:35.:13:39.

keeps checking behind, because he is expecting Lagat to charge. He won't.

:13:40.:13:44.

The American will come home to win the great Manchester ten K.

:13:45.:13:52.

Ritzenheim is this year's champion. 28 minutes and six seconds his final

:13:53.:13:59.

time. A good performance from Ritzenheim. Lagat take second. One

:14:00.:14:03.

better than last year. He thought he would be able to hang on for the

:14:04.:14:11.

kick, but he can't. Mokoka just ahead of Birmingham. The last

:14:12.:14:22.

kilometre was two minutes 50. It is slightly uphill. Andy Burnham just

:14:23.:14:29.

crossing the line, as well. You will have enjoyed that, Paula. The person

:14:30.:14:34.

at the front, running hard. Just looking at him. Showing Brendan

:14:35.:14:39.

Foster how much it means to him to be here. To be able to come here. To

:14:40.:14:48.

start... It is some campaign. He has been racing really well on the roads

:14:49.:14:53.

this year. But to celebrate that with a victory over a tough field.

:14:54.:14:59.

He beat Lagat and well by making it a race to his strengths. As running

:15:00.:15:04.

strong out there. And really pushing and taking a race to him. And being

:15:05.:15:09.

able to come away with a victory means a huge amount to Ritzenheim.

:15:10.:15:18.

Skull and just crossing the line from Ireland. -- Scullon just

:15:19.:15:32.

crossing the line from Ireland. I think a lot of these guys will have

:15:33.:15:33.

personal bests today. It was hard for Ritzenheim. He knew

:15:34.:15:50.

what he had to do. You always admire a distance runner who applies

:15:51.:15:54.

himself in such a way over the last couple of kilometres. Trying to get

:15:55.:16:00.

rid of one of the best in terms of kicking, Lagat. Look how much it

:16:01.:16:05.

means to Ritzenheim. Big for him. Something for him to cheer about

:16:06.:16:06.

after a difficult year for him. Is a rather tired Bernard Lagat in

:16:07.:16:23.

second place. So the results today. Earlier, we had two wheelchair

:16:24.:16:28.

races. But Simon Lawson was a very good winner, from Great Britain. In

:16:29.:16:38.

the women's race, a personal best for Lizzie Tench in first. And we

:16:39.:16:48.

sort an emphatic win by Tirunesh Dibaba over Christelle Daunay,

:16:49.:16:50.

world-class running once more from the Ethiopian. Katrina Wootton went

:16:51.:16:58.

with Tirunesh Dibaba early on and paid for that rather. The winning

:16:59.:17:09.

time went to Dathan Ritzenhein, aggregate time would mean less than

:17:10.:17:12.

the win. Great performance from here am -- from him. And once more doing

:17:13.:17:21.

well in Manchester, Stephen Mokoka. Just ahead of Collis. And in sixth

:17:22.:17:24.

place, Andy Vernon. And very happy day for Dathan

:17:25.:17:35.

Ritzenhein of America and another masterclass by Tirunesh Dibaba. We

:17:36.:17:40.

have relocated from the start to the finish of the 10k and some of the

:17:41.:17:44.

retread is making their way over the finish line to rapturous applause.

:17:45.:17:50.

We are just next to the Beetham Tower and the Hilton hotel in the

:17:51.:17:53.

centre of Manchester and I need not have set an alarm this morning

:17:54.:17:57.

because the noise from here since about eight got this morning has

:17:58.:18:03.

been huge. When the masses take to the roads shortly, they are really

:18:04.:18:07.

going to feel it. It is a special occasion and I think the Sun might

:18:08.:18:12.

just be making its way out as well. But there has been so much action

:18:13.:18:16.

already today because for the very first time, as well as the elite

:18:17.:18:20.

races and the 10k, we also had our very first half-marathon in

:18:21.:18:26.

Manchester. It got under way at about nine o'clock in the morning

:18:27.:18:32.

and they are trying to expand this festival of a sporting weekend that

:18:33.:18:35.

includes the CityGames we saw on Friday as well. And as you can see,

:18:36.:18:43.

the mascots are here and children. We had children's races. Children as

:18:44.:18:48.

young as three taking part in the junior race and the older people

:18:49.:18:52.

round in the 2.5 kilometre junior event. About 2,000 people taking

:18:53.:18:59.

part in a new central location in Manchester. So everybody wanting to

:19:00.:19:04.

take a piece of the special events. We know what it it is against a

:19:05.:19:10.

backdrop of in Manchester but as the afternoon has gone on, everybody

:19:11.:19:13.

enjoying what is a very special sporting occasion every year. But it

:19:14.:19:19.

is about time the nervous masses took to the streets of Manchester.

:19:20.:19:23.

Thousands of them are ready and thousands signed up after the events

:19:24.:19:27.

we had on Monday night, and so many looking forward to taking in the

:19:28.:19:32.

atmosphere and the occasion. So back to you Paula Radcliffe and Steve

:19:33.:19:36.

Cram, it is going to be a special afternoon.

:19:37.:19:40.

For many, it has not started. We still have areas waves to get under

:19:41.:19:49.

way. As I said, so many people taking part in this 10k, they have

:19:50.:19:55.

to be staggered across a couple of hours. The rest of the afternoon,

:19:56.:19:59.

they will still be coming across the finish line and the streets will

:20:00.:20:01.

continue to be filled by these inspiring people. A lot of people

:20:02.:20:08.

taking part, of course, thinking about everything that happens this

:20:09.:20:11.

week. As ever, raising money for charity. Just mentioning Brigid

:20:12.:20:20.

Caldwell, running her first 10k today, and she is running for

:20:21.:20:30.

Christie's. So good luck to her. Keep your messages coming in. It is

:20:31.:20:38.

an inspiring sight at the best of times. But the week that we have had

:20:39.:20:47.

here in Manchester, today, you can't help but admire everybody that has

:20:48.:20:50.

turned out today. Both Tehran and to watch. -- both running and watching.

:20:51.:21:02.

As I said, there are so many inspiring stories and we can't tell

:21:03.:21:06.

them all but we can let you know about some, this is an inspiring

:21:07.:21:08.

young man from Rochdale. My name is Azeem Amir, I am 18 and a

:21:09.:21:21.

blind runner, I have a visual impairment which means I have no

:21:22.:21:24.

site in my right eye and a bit bit of perception in my left. I don't

:21:25.:21:29.

let it stop me in sport or on the academic side and I have used it to

:21:30.:21:35.

my advantage to inspire and motivate others to say that if I can do it,

:21:36.:21:41.

why can't you? The ambition is to play for my country, to represent my

:21:42.:21:45.

country in the sport that I love and not allowed the fact that I have got

:21:46.:21:52.

no site to act as a barrier. If fully able-bodied players can resent

:21:53.:21:56.

their country, with a visual impairment and a disability, why

:21:57.:22:03.

can't I? Participation within sport has made me a more well rounded

:22:04.:22:06.

person and increased my confidence and I have lead a lot of lessons

:22:07.:22:11.

which if I had been more of an introvert and not experienced

:22:12.:22:18.

different sports, were not. I did the Manchester 10k run last year

:22:19.:22:21.

with my guide, Sam Hinchcliffe, we use a skipping rope and he leads the

:22:22.:22:26.

way with verbal commands and uses the rope to tell me which way we are

:22:27.:22:32.

going next. Running with a partner makes it much more fun and

:22:33.:22:34.

interesting and quite funny sometimes. I basically wanted to

:22:35.:22:42.

give something back to the Royal eye Hospital for the amount of care and

:22:43.:22:45.

support they have given me and my family for the last 18 years. They

:22:46.:22:50.

give people the ability to be independent because site is such a

:22:51.:22:55.

factor, it is one of your main senses. And they try and preserve

:22:56.:23:00.

that as much as they can and they want to give somebody the virginity

:23:01.:23:04.

to live their life to the maximum. With the events that have occurred

:23:05.:23:08.

this week, as long as every single person completes the 10k with a

:23:09.:23:15.

smile on their face, it will have been a huge success, showcasing what

:23:16.:23:18.

Manchester has to offer to the world.

:23:19.:23:25.

And it is lovely hearing Azeem Amir talking about the smiles because I

:23:26.:23:29.

have a unique vantage point standing here and when the runners run past,

:23:30.:23:34.

they do so either side. Blind We have had to waves of the masses

:23:35.:23:38.

going past and every person I have seen has been smiling, it is

:23:39.:23:43.

immensely powerful. If you would like to do a 10k and you want to

:23:44.:23:48.

start smaller than that, there are lots of ways you can start and it

:23:49.:23:52.

does not have to be running, it could be Triathlon, swimming,

:23:53.:23:56.

whatever, and he is more information about how to get inspired.

:23:57.:24:02.

This is BBC sport's campaign to help you get active. You can find

:24:03.:24:05.

inspirational stories from people just like you and hints and tips and

:24:06.:24:12.

practical guides to help you give something a go. There is an activity

:24:13.:24:16.

binder to help you find something to try near you. Just get up, get

:24:17.:24:26.

inspired and get active. There was a bit earlier, he spoke to

:24:27.:24:31.

somebody running this 10k today and only in April last year, she could

:24:32.:24:36.

only run for one -- from one might post to another, so there is

:24:37.:24:40.

potential for everybody. And this is a special way, are they going to

:24:41.:24:45.

give me a wave? JJ can tell us why this is a little bit special, how

:24:46.:24:50.

extraordinary! We have a very special group and a

:24:51.:24:55.

very special wave, the purple wave. The key, what is the purple wave? It

:24:56.:25:01.

is a mass entry from the University of Manchester, we got 1100 people

:25:02.:25:06.

last year for the first year and we got 2,500 people this year. Staff,

:25:07.:25:10.

students, wearing purple, just brilliant. So you have people from

:25:11.:25:15.

all over the world probably. You are not from Manchester, but how special

:25:16.:25:19.

is Manchester now you are part of it? Coming to Manchester just under

:25:20.:25:25.

two years ago, I have felt such a community, I feel like I really

:25:26.:25:28.

belong here and there is a friendliness in Manchester which

:25:29.:25:32.

does not exist anywhere else. I am from the South and Manchester is so

:25:33.:25:37.

much more happy and warm and more bubbly than anywhere else. Today is

:25:38.:25:41.

a massive challenge and you are doing it just like a bee, what is

:25:42.:25:47.

the relevance? The bee is the University's mascot for many people

:25:48.:25:51.

and for me, it is a reason to run quite slowly and is to raise some

:25:52.:25:55.

money. The purple wave, you are raising money, what are we trying to

:25:56.:26:00.

support today? It is to raise money for all sorts of things and one

:26:01.:26:03.

cause special to the University is a scholarship programme for students

:26:04.:26:06.

from Africa so a what others raising money that today. Best of luck to

:26:07.:26:13.

all of you and in a bee suit and everybody from Manchester

:26:14.:26:16.

University. Well done, so many students and

:26:17.:26:21.

staff. Over 2,000. They will be heading off shortly.

:26:22.:26:26.

And we look at those coming across the finish line and I was watching a

:26:27.:26:32.

couple of people, on a day like this, still looking at their

:26:33.:26:36.

watches, they still want a personal best and to perform well. Chilton

:26:37.:26:41.

runners holding hands crossing the line. That will continue throughout

:26:42.:26:47.

the afternoon. This is another story now to look at. You mentioned one

:26:48.:26:52.

university, there are two and this is about a student from Manchester

:26:53.:26:55.

Metropolitan University. My name is Jessica Dyer and this is

:26:56.:27:09.

my run. I am running the 10k for a mental health charity Mind because I

:27:10.:27:11.

have had my own battles with mental health, starting from 11 years old.

:27:12.:27:17.

That spiralled into five years of self harming. And depression. For

:27:18.:27:24.

me, the easiest way to explain it would be darkness. It feels like

:27:25.:27:30.

everything has a grey cloud over it and everything just feels dark. I

:27:31.:27:33.

couldn't find joy in anything. The number of people that tell you to

:27:34.:27:38.

stop doing something rather than asking you how you feel while trying

:27:39.:27:42.

to understand why, that was the biggest problem. It culminated in a

:27:43.:27:52.

couple of suicide attempts. And the final one was the point at which I

:27:53.:27:57.

was like, this really is not OK. That feeling is of you are ready to

:27:58.:28:03.

leave everything and everyone behind them, it is actually quite scary to

:28:04.:28:09.

know that I was at that point where nothing at all mattered to me any

:28:10.:28:18.

more. When I decided, actually, I want to engage with the help that I

:28:19.:28:22.

had already been receiving for a period of time, I engaged with it

:28:23.:28:27.

and I decided, I want to get better for me. Since then, I have just been

:28:28.:28:30.

trying to surround myself with happiness. But I think this run that

:28:31.:28:41.

will be the first of many and I can sense that this is the start of me

:28:42.:28:46.

getting out there and doing as much as I can now. I am halfway to a

:28:47.:28:52.

degree and doing this 10k, I am reaching for as many different

:28:53.:28:56.

opportunities as I can and I can actually see a future now whereas

:28:57.:29:00.

this time six, seven years ago, the future for maiden was not to live

:29:01.:29:05.

any more. So incredibly proud of myself for what I have achieved and

:29:06.:29:16.

what I will keep achieving. You two can't keep away from each

:29:17.:29:20.

other! I saw you on Friday at the CityGames and you are running here

:29:21.:29:25.

today, how has it been? It was great the atmosphere was amazing. Forget

:29:26.:29:28.

about the time, but that was just about Manchester, the Manchester bee

:29:29.:29:35.

and saluting the crowd, they were wonderful. Amazing reception as you

:29:36.:29:39.

crossed the line. But who crossed the line first? Me, and this

:29:40.:29:43.

occasion. It was incredible, the support, Manchester has come out to

:29:44.:29:47.

support everybody today and it was incredible, I really enjoyed it.

:29:48.:29:50.

Just put into context what a day like this and means to the runners

:29:51.:29:55.

and the crowds. I really can't, it is just in the last week, the

:29:56.:30:02.

outpouring of kindness and people coming together and being defiant,

:30:03.:30:06.

it has just been amazing. This is an amazing city and I am just so proud

:30:07.:30:09.

to be here and to be running in this event, it is just amazing. Well cool

:30:10.:30:14.

down and well done and good to see you both.

:30:15.:30:23.

Ella, you were running this morning, how was it? It was fantastic. And

:30:24.:30:32.

you have run it four times, haven't you? Yes. Why are you running it? I

:30:33.:30:38.

want to help the Children's Hospital and make people proud. That's

:30:39.:30:43.

because you spend a lot of time in hospital yourself, don't you? Your

:30:44.:30:47.

mum is here and you finally persuaded her to run. Yes. How far

:30:48.:30:53.

are you going to run? Ten kilometres. Have you run far before?

:30:54.:31:03.

This will be my first time. Are you nervous? Yes, just hoping I can get

:31:04.:31:07.

over the finish line. Hopefully the atmosphere and adrenaline will help

:31:08.:31:12.

me. Tell us about the hospital you are raising money for. Manchester

:31:13.:31:16.

Children's Hospital. Ella has been treated there since she was four.

:31:17.:31:21.

She will need it throughout. It was our second home for a time. Thank

:31:22.:31:28.

you just doesn't do enough. And we know that loads of people were

:31:29.:31:31.

treated there Monday night. Yes. The majority. They just do amazing work.

:31:32.:31:39.

They stopped the number rising higher, I think. Show everybody your

:31:40.:31:48.

medal. Fantastic. And you are going to be a starter, aren't you? Yes, I

:31:49.:31:55.

am. Shall we say good luck to your mum? Yes, good luck, mum, and don't

:31:56.:32:06.

be nervous. Thanks. Sweet little girl. Well, Manchester

:32:07.:32:18.

United play there, and they played a part in this dramatic week. And, as

:32:19.:32:25.

ever, a fitting backdrop for this great sporting city. And the people

:32:26.:32:30.

of this city. Showing what they are all about. They will have fun out

:32:31.:32:42.

there, as well. But they will all be, I'm sure, thinking and

:32:43.:32:50.

remembering the events of this week. It's been interesting. I was in the

:32:51.:32:54.

USA when it happened. I think there was an initial, well, thought that

:32:55.:33:07.

it might not go ahead this weekend. Brendan said it wasn't should we it

:33:08.:33:13.

was how do we do it. Yes, the biggest question was about security.

:33:14.:33:18.

Just making sure that everybody is safe. As you mentioned earlier.

:33:19.:33:23.

Everybody heals in their roadway. Everybody carries on and moves on.

:33:24.:33:27.

We will always remember what happened, but life has to go on,

:33:28.:33:32.

like us to continue, we must stand up and show the human spirit is

:33:33.:33:38.

stronger than this. For so many people it is about getting out

:33:39.:33:41.

there, feeling it, feeling the heartbeat, feeling the city alive

:33:42.:33:45.

along the route, and coming together in this way. In any road race, there

:33:46.:33:52.

is always human spirit stories. More than ever, I think, today, and this

:33:53.:33:56.

weekend, that will be felt in so many cities, but particularly on the

:33:57.:34:07.

streets of Manchester today. Louise is enjoying her advantage point --

:34:08.:34:23.

vantage point. She is a keen runner herself. I went over to St Ann's

:34:24.:34:33.

Square earlier. It was an inspiring place to be. Quiet. Respect. Lots of

:34:34.:34:38.

families there. The floral tribute is growing and will continue to

:34:39.:34:43.

grow. Today it is a tribute of a different type.

:34:44.:34:56.

The young and old have come to take part. And they have come to cheer.

:34:57.:35:04.

I've never seen so many people out watching this event. It has always

:35:05.:35:08.

been popular but it is good to see so many people taking part and

:35:09.:35:14.

coming along to cheer, as well. They are all here. Thank you. When

:35:15.:35:18.

you were with me earlier there was just a steady trickle of people

:35:19.:35:24.

coming down. Look at this stream of incredible, special runners making

:35:25.:35:27.

their Way down Deansgate. Louise was talking about the smiles on their

:35:28.:35:34.

faces from the start. Now, it is released, but enjoyment, as well.

:35:35.:35:39.

You can see that everybody, not just the runners, but everybody who has

:35:40.:35:45.

lined the route, everybody having such a fantastic day. Some people

:35:46.:35:49.

finding it more difficult than others, obviously, but at the end of

:35:50.:35:52.

the day people are just getting through it. There are so many

:35:53.:35:55.

stories we are witnessing and are hearing about today. But one is of a

:35:56.:36:02.

woman called Helen, who despite her own battle is still giving back to

:36:03.:36:08.

so many people. Here is her story. My name is Helen and this is my run.

:36:09.:36:15.

I was diagnosed with secondary breast cancer in April of last year.

:36:16.:36:21.

The lump I found was in my armpit, not on my breast, so much so that my

:36:22.:36:26.

first mammogram did not show it. For a lot of women who have breast

:36:27.:36:30.

cancer, they have a primary diagnosis which is curative. They

:36:31.:36:34.

get cured of disease and some are unfortunate and have a re-occurrence

:36:35.:36:38.

which may spread to secondary later on in life. For me mine was

:36:39.:36:42.

terminal, unfortunately, so I am being treated at the Christie and I

:36:43.:36:46.

am hoping to live for a good few years yet. I felt whiny. I

:36:47.:36:57.

occasionally do. -- initially I felt why me, I occasionally do, but it is

:36:58.:37:03.

bad luck. I'm not actually running for one of the big cancer charities,

:37:04.:37:09.

or the Christie, although I support them, I'm running for an

:37:10.:37:16.

organisation called Pegasus Riding For The Disabled. I am a trustee,

:37:17.:37:21.

coach, and every Sunday we teach kids and adults with disabilities to

:37:22.:37:28.

ride horses. OK, ie ready to go faster? Off we go when you are

:37:29.:37:34.

ready. -- are you ready to go faster? There is nothing better than

:37:35.:37:39.

seeing somebody with quite a severe disabilities, never ridden a horse

:37:40.:37:45.

before, putting them on a pony and watching them go. Sometimes I can

:37:46.:37:53.

turn up grumpy. Ten minutes into a lesson I don't feel that way any

:37:54.:37:58.

more. Realistically I know my cancer cannot be cured. But I'm hoping that

:37:59.:38:04.

by exercise I can stay as well as possible for as long as possible.

:38:05.:38:10.

The start of the race is always emotional. Being in amongst those

:38:11.:38:15.

thousands of people it is hugely emotional. Running it, just a few

:38:16.:38:20.

weeks out of my last chemotherapy session, is going to feel, that's

:38:21.:38:23.

going to feel like a big achievement. The emotion of

:38:24.:38:31.

finishing with my supporters will be amazing. And I will cross the line,

:38:32.:38:39.

even if it is walking. I am with some of Helen's biggest fans and

:38:40.:38:45.

friends. She is incredible. Shears. We are inspired. She isn't thinking

:38:46.:38:51.

of herself. -- she is, we are inspired. She was just thinking

:38:52.:38:54.

about the children she helps and her charity. It is that active

:38:55.:38:58.

selflessness which is inspiring about her. What do you think today

:38:59.:39:05.

will mean for her? The whole day is just emotional. After everything

:39:06.:39:10.

that has happened anyway. But going through all of the chemotherapy she

:39:11.:39:13.

has been going through, and being part of today, part of Manchester,

:39:14.:39:19.

it will mean so much more. You said you did not want to speak. Put into

:39:20.:39:25.

context how amazing she is. Absolutely brilliant. This is the

:39:26.:39:33.

fourth one. She is on chemotherapy. This is specifically for riding for

:39:34.:39:36.

the disabled. This is somebody who keeps chickens, who works full-time,

:39:37.:39:44.

which is why, if we turn around, that was always the joke. We always

:39:45.:39:52.

say if she isn't busy doing something else, she is fighting

:39:53.:39:58.

crime at night. I am inspired by her story. I cannot wait to meet her.

:39:59.:40:02.

Thank you. Lovely to see them. Nobody could do

:40:03.:40:08.

this on their own. These are the most special people, the ones

:40:09.:40:11.

getting them over the line. I have just heard that Helen is passed the

:40:12.:40:17.

halfway mark. She said she would run over that finish line, even if she

:40:18.:40:22.

walked the last kilometre. One of the most lovely things has been

:40:23.:40:26.

watching people tried to run the last yards. One guy took a stumble.

:40:27.:40:34.

A few people got around him, rallied him, and got him over the line.

:40:35.:40:44.

Let's go to JJ who is with some of the crowd back at the start.

:40:45.:40:47.

I am with some of our supporters. Who are you here to see? Very shy.

:40:48.:40:59.

She is here for her daddy. How proud is she going to be today? Very

:41:00.:41:05.

proud. Very proud he has come after everything that has happened this

:41:06.:41:09.

week, and he is still determined to come. Before every wave that has

:41:10.:41:15.

been silence, a poem, it is really powerful, isn't it? Yes. It sums up

:41:16.:41:20.

Manchester. We stand together no matter what happens. How important

:41:21.:41:25.

do you think it is to the runners and for your husband to come out

:41:26.:41:28.

here and cheer them on? It is just amazing. All of them have trained so

:41:29.:41:35.

hard. They are doing this to raise money for charities. It is so

:41:36.:41:42.

selfless that they are doing it. Really proud of them. Glad you are

:41:43.:41:50.

proud of them and having a wonderful day. We will see them, crossed the

:41:51.:41:55.

line soon. Enjoy your day. That pride really echoed throughout

:41:56.:42:00.

the city. I'm with Tony Walsh who you will be familiar with. Reading

:42:01.:42:04.

that incredible poem at the vigil. And you have been reading another

:42:05.:42:08.

poem to the start of each wave, how has it been for you? Very emotional.

:42:09.:42:14.

I am trying to keep mindful of why this is happening to me. Why this is

:42:15.:42:19.

happening in Manchester. The reaction to the first poem has been

:42:20.:42:22.

amazing around the world. People keep stopping me in the street with

:42:23.:42:27.

tears in their eyes. I had a poem today, I wrote it a couple of years

:42:28.:42:32.

ago for the run, and it has given a couple of lines in it new meaning

:42:33.:42:36.

today. It really does have new meaning, listening to it. You are

:42:37.:42:41.

clever with words. Words can, in some ways, help in these occasions.

:42:42.:42:48.

We looked at artists, musicians -- we look at artists, musicians, and

:42:49.:42:53.

poets to say the things we cannot say ourselves. It has been for the

:42:54.:42:59.

community today. It is what artists do, say the big words for us. We

:43:00.:43:06.

have been standing here. Three waves so far. On every single person I

:43:07.:43:13.

have seen is smiles on their faces. The start of something special for

:43:14.:43:18.

each individual person. I have been changing the words to my poem right

:43:19.:43:21.

up until the last second on the podium. I was going to have a line

:43:22.:43:27.

at the end, we will fight their fear with fun, I changed last second. But

:43:28.:43:32.

if we are choosing love we are rejecting hatred and fear and we

:43:33.:43:36.

will have a smile on our face. They are certainly doing that today. Yes.

:43:37.:43:41.

Thank you for being here, and thank you for your words. And now, a

:43:42.:43:46.

celebrity finisher? We have a couple. We have Peter

:43:47.:43:59.

here. We need to have some sort of chair here. I want to pull you up.

:44:00.:44:05.

Talk to us about the people who pulled you through. There was

:44:06.:44:09.

fantastic support all the way. That is the most I have seen and I have

:44:10.:44:16.

done 11. It is fantastic. From 11 to a first timer. What struck me was

:44:17.:44:22.

the number of, well, he got in my head at the start saying he couldn't

:44:23.:44:27.

decide if we needed the toilet. That was in my mind all the way round so

:44:28.:44:34.

I stopped for a moment. What struck me were all of the people who said

:44:35.:44:38.

thank you. You want to say thank you back to them. As Peter said, the

:44:39.:44:43.

atmosphere is amazing. It is more than pride, more than defiance, you

:44:44.:44:47.

cannot sum it up, it is a great atmosphere. Having done it 11 times

:44:48.:44:52.

I'm sure the emotions are different. What was going through your head?

:44:53.:44:57.

The atrocity is in your mind all the time. It breaks your heart. I am

:44:58.:45:04.

feeling emotional, actually. It's been a bad week. What you have been

:45:05.:45:13.

doing has given so much backed everybody else. They have been doing

:45:14.:45:23.

it back. The least we could do. -- what you have been doing has given

:45:24.:45:26.

so much back to everybody else. We have another story will

:45:27.:45:32.

We are doing the Manchester 10k and we are doing it slightly

:45:33.:45:39.

differently. We are doing it in a caterpillar. It is the longest

:45:40.:45:42.

caterpillar I have seen. It is bright yellow. Don't think you can

:45:43.:45:49.

miss really! We are running fall Went you wish upon a. It grants

:45:50.:46:00.

wishes for children's wishes. The firemen are amazing and may have

:46:01.:46:05.

been supporting our charity for ten years and they are amazing and they

:46:06.:46:11.

are an inspiration. We have met a number of the families that they

:46:12.:46:15.

grant wishes for and it has made us even more happy that what we are

:46:16.:46:20.

doing is going towards a good cause. Jamie is 12 years old and she was

:46:21.:46:28.

diagnosed at once which is eight -- with a genetic disorder which stops

:46:29.:46:33.

you developing. So she has an incredibly thin bones because she

:46:34.:46:39.

does not walk and she has crushing internal organs and she does not

:46:40.:46:43.

walk or talk and she never will. There are a lot of things we can't

:46:44.:46:47.

do because there are three of us as a family and we are very restricted.

:46:48.:46:52.

The first thing they suggested was a winter wonderland event at the

:46:53.:46:55.

Center Parcs which was the most incredible experience we have ever

:46:56.:47:02.

had. The memories these events procreate can't be taken away by it

:47:03.:47:07.

is an illness and that is what those guys are doing and that is why it is

:47:08.:47:13.

so important. The main feeling is we are trying to raise as much money on

:47:14.:47:21.

as we can for Wish Upon A Star and that is our overriding achievement.

:47:22.:47:25.

The money changes people's lives and the fact these guys constantly

:47:26.:47:28.

support the charity is unbelievable, they are such a great bunch of guys,

:47:29.:47:30.

they are amazing. Not sure if they have started yet.

:47:31.:47:48.

30 of them dressed as a giant Caterpillar. It may turn into a

:47:49.:47:56.

beautiful butterfly, who knows? Good luck to them at back, it is a great

:47:57.:48:00.

cause and they are raising money for. So many have made plans in the

:48:01.:48:10.

weeks and months leading up to this. And events to some extent taken

:48:11.:48:15.

over, their own aspirations, but of course some important that they

:48:16.:48:19.

stick to those plans and they carry on with what they were going to do

:48:20.:48:24.

and that is what today has really been about. That is another group.

:48:25.:48:29.

Not quite sure what they are dressed as. Too far away to be able to tell.

:48:30.:48:38.

So going just over one hour, for those who started in the first wave,

:48:39.:48:43.

63 minutes as they crossed the line in front of me. Many of these,

:48:44.:48:51.

wearing different colours. White, orange, mingling together. What this

:48:52.:48:57.

event was meant to be about and it always will be about. And they will

:48:58.:49:03.

return in future years, I'm sure, and they will of course remember

:49:04.:49:08.

2017. And it was absolutely right, I have never seen so many people are

:49:09.:49:13.

watching. It is always popular in Deansgate but you can see the crowds

:49:14.:49:17.

on the route. That is some of the University group, 2,000 of them

:49:18.:49:20.

taking part and they will have plenty of support. Of course, as I

:49:21.:49:29.

mentioned, we have the half-marathon for the first time today. I'm sure

:49:30.:49:37.

that events will continue to grow. 10k in itself a massive challenge

:49:38.:49:41.

for so many people as Louise was mentioning, plenty of people for

:49:42.:49:45.

whom this is their very first 10k and they might move on to the

:49:46.:49:49.

half-marathon in future years. Still a couple of ways to get going. Three

:49:50.:49:57.

o'clock is the last. And at the finish, it is starting to get a

:49:58.:50:02.

little crowded as more and more people finish their day and finished

:50:03.:50:05.

their run. You have just crossed the line, how

:50:06.:50:18.

are you feeling, Johnny? Absolutely exhausted. I was trying to go below

:50:19.:50:26.

37 minutes and I think I did 37:2 but it was a good atmosphere, I was

:50:27.:50:30.

trying to get top 100 and hopefully I might have done it. It was tough

:50:31.:50:34.

out there today. Yes, quite warm, not as warm as yesterday. It is a

:50:35.:50:38.

strange atmosphere with what happened. I used to teach in

:50:39.:50:43.

Manchester a couple of years ago and Molly was one of my students. There

:50:44.:50:48.

are some children at the school are used to teach at who were at the

:50:49.:50:52.

arena. Luckily, they are all right but believable that can happen. It's

:50:53.:50:56.

great for the city to show we are strong and we can come back for it

:50:57.:51:00.

and the crowds have been amazing. Absolutely fantastic. It's great to

:51:01.:51:05.

see you out here. Thank you very much.

:51:06.:51:11.

Johnny is one of many finishing behind us here on Deansgate. I have

:51:12.:51:17.

seen a very good friend of mine, I will give him some stick afterwards

:51:18.:51:21.

but it did not look like a happy face as he made his way down the

:51:22.:51:25.

finish line. Will, I will call you afterwards!

:51:26.:51:29.

Paula Radcliffe and Brendan Foster here. You have seen is from start to

:51:30.:51:34.

finish and you have watched this race many times, this is a bit

:51:35.:51:39.

different and a bit special. It is always special but today, it is more

:51:40.:51:44.

special than ever. There is a reason it is called Greater Manchester and

:51:45.:51:48.

it has really shown today. The amount of people just coming to

:51:49.:51:51.

support, people he wanted to come and take part in the event just to

:51:52.:51:58.

show that human spirit fights on. It is personified in road racing so

:51:59.:52:03.

often, we see the camaraderie stories, and more so than ever it is

:52:04.:52:07.

showing that this is a spirit that will always fight on. At the start

:52:08.:52:12.

of the programme, we knew it was in the hands of the council, but they

:52:13.:52:16.

gave you the go and you knew that this was the spirit that would

:52:17.:52:17.

changing. Only because it is Manchester and

:52:18.:52:25.

the people have been amazing all week and well led by the civic

:52:26.:52:30.

authorities and Sir Richard Leese has been magnificent. The response

:52:31.:52:35.

of the city, the people of the city have been right behind him following

:52:36.:52:40.

him and saying all week, we are coming, we are coming. We provide a

:52:41.:52:46.

stage and the people of Manchester have occupied this stage

:52:47.:52:50.

unbelievably well. Haven't they just? One other guy pounding the

:52:51.:52:53.

streets of Manchester blossom time is Anthony Crolla. How was that as

:52:54.:53:00.

an experience? Your cousin was affected by the events in Manchester

:53:01.:53:07.

on Monday night. And running through here with your boxing career. And

:53:08.:53:10.

thousands of amazing people in Manchester, this must have been an

:53:11.:53:15.

amazing experience? Brilliant, I did not think it could surpass last year

:53:16.:53:22.

but it really has done. The last one kilometre, we had the crowd, a

:53:23.:53:25.

brilliant experience. It big she so proud to be a Mancunian. You are not

:53:26.:53:30.

competitive at all, I'm sure, who had the best time? I think Scott had

:53:31.:53:37.

the fastest time. My excuse was I was running with my mate and making

:53:38.:53:41.

sure he finished. Great team effort and more importantly money raised

:53:42.:53:50.

for important causes. Just a word on Tirunesh Dibaba, another masterclass

:53:51.:53:54.

and it was key for her to be here. Yes, she really wanted to be here,

:53:55.:53:58.

she loves the city of Manchester and she had a textbook demonstration

:53:59.:54:02.

display, dominating the race from start to finish, in contrast to the

:54:03.:54:08.

men's race where we saw a much greater battle and it was the person

:54:09.:54:11.

who wanted it more at the end who triumphed, Dathan Ritzenhein. I'm

:54:12.:54:16.

sure everybody has very different memories of today but it will be

:54:17.:54:22.

back again next year, just as good, if not better, because this event

:54:23.:54:27.

just keeps going. You can't hold back the great city of Manchester. I

:54:28.:54:31.

am so proud this event is in the city and so proud of the reaction

:54:32.:54:37.

and proud of the people who have responded, it is fantastic. And

:54:38.:54:40.

Tirunesh Dibaba, the greatest female athlete, three times Olympic

:54:41.:54:44.

champion, coming here. Everybody is nervous and has -- in anticipation

:54:45.:54:50.

of what may happen, but they came here and they showed their strength.

:54:51.:54:55.

And Manchester won. It really did, it's perfect way to summarise. So

:54:56.:55:01.

good to see all of you. Denise. Shattered! It is our very first

:55:02.:55:09.

official 10k. Best time as well. Only running six months. And you are

:55:10.:55:15.

here. And we are both Nannes, running for our grandchildren.

:55:16.:55:23.

Never? Absolutely. The shock of U2 coming up arm in arm was just so

:55:24.:55:28.

beautiful, but it really echoes what it is about -- the picture of you

:55:29.:55:32.

both coming up arm in arm. It has been a brilliant day. We are doing

:55:33.:55:37.

it for Cancer Research, we lost our colleague last year. We have raised

:55:38.:55:41.

about ?600 for Cancer Research. It is all good. It made my day seemed

:55:42.:55:47.

you! It has made my day seemed you, enjoy it. Thank you, we will do.

:55:48.:55:58.

Naughty nannies coming two! Well done. Thank you.

:55:59.:56:07.

We are back at the start and I am with JJ and I have studied here

:56:08.:56:12.

before a couple of times and it is always emotional. But today, being a

:56:13.:56:19.

spectator, you really get a sense of the massive human endeavour we have

:56:20.:56:23.

been watching. It is a very special day and I feel so honoured to be

:56:24.:56:28.

right in the heart of it. The crowds have been fantastic. I have not had

:56:29.:56:31.

much experience of Manchester before, and have lived here four

:56:32.:56:36.

months, and I have had the biggest welcome in the city. For anybody who

:56:37.:56:40.

does not know Manchester well, you are getting to see just how special

:56:41.:56:46.

this places. It is six years since you yourself were injured in an

:56:47.:56:50.

explosion. It has got to bring a special poignancy. It is a difficult

:56:51.:56:58.

weekend for me. There is an idea of celebration that I made it and I

:56:59.:57:02.

know others were not so fortunate. It was a rebirth this happening to

:57:03.:57:06.

me and I came back stronger and everybody involved and I mean the

:57:07.:57:09.

entire city and the entire area will come back stronger from this. On

:57:10.:57:14.

that positive message, thank you very much indeed. What I have really

:57:15.:57:19.

felt, we have all been here, the runners, the spectators, just to

:57:20.:57:24.

stand up and be counted as part of this amazing experience of today.

:57:25.:57:32.

I couldn't agree more, Louise. As we have seen, thousands more making

:57:33.:57:41.

their way over the finish line. And we have got John Bishop. 24 hours

:57:42.:57:46.

ago coming you decided you would be here. Just describe what this

:57:47.:57:50.

last... The atmosphere all the way around, I did this run ten years ago

:57:51.:57:55.

and there was not the number of people to support, the passion.

:57:56.:57:59.

Today has done what it was meant to do, it has made a statement to say

:58:00.:58:03.

this is what we are about, this is what Manchester is about and what we

:58:04.:58:09.

are about. A guy from Liverpool, proud North West man who knows

:58:10.:58:15.

Manchester inside out, it has been really, you personify what this is

:58:16.:58:18.

all about. Especially how quickly you came in. Bentley so much. They

:58:19.:58:22.

do so much to everybody for watching. It has been a special

:58:23.:58:29.

occasion. Unity is what it has all been about. Have a happy Sunday.

:58:30.:59:21.

We are Manchester. We are Manchester.

:59:22.:59:24.
