Hello and welcome to highlights of the 2017 Great Manchester Run. This

:00:08.:00:14.

city has been in the heart of the nation and Sony parts of the world

:00:15.:00:18.

this week. Today, 35,000 people took to the streets after what has been a

:00:19.:00:25.

terrible and heartbreaking week. We have races for kids, a half

:00:26.:00:30.

marathon, and a ten K all taking place. And many runners taking with

:00:31.:00:34.

him -- with them words spoken by local poet Tony Walsh.

:00:35.:00:42.

This is the place in the north-west of England. It's ace. It's the best.

:00:43.:00:49.

The songs that we sing set the whole planet shaking. Our inventions are

:00:50.:00:54.

legends. There is no tweet can't make. So we make brilliant music, we

:00:55.:00:58.

make brilliant bands, we make goals that make souls. And we make things

:00:59.:01:03.

from steel. We make things from cotton. We make something rotten.

:01:04.:01:09.

And we make you a whole. We make you feel welcome. We make something

:01:10.:01:13.

happen, we can seem to help it. And if you're looking for a history,

:01:14.:01:20.

then yes, we have well. But the Manchester way is to make it

:01:21.:01:24.

yourself. And this is the place where we first played as kids. And

:01:25.:01:30.

this is the place where our folks came to work, where they struggled.

:01:31.:01:37.

They hurt in the dirt. They built a us a city. They built awesome this

:01:38.:01:43.

-- these towns. So this is the place. Some are born here, some

:01:44.:01:48.

drawn here. But we all call it home. They will never defeat all the

:01:49.:01:53.

dreamers and schemers who team through these streets, because this

:01:54.:01:57.

is a place that has been so -- through some hard times. Depressions

:01:58.:02:02.

and dark times. But we keep fighting back. Northern grit, Northern wit.

:02:03.:02:15.

In the streets of our city. We don't want your pity. Because this is the

:02:16.:02:19.

place where we stand strong together with a smile on our face. Mancunians

:02:20.:02:26.

forever. This is the place in our hearts, in our homes. Because this

:02:27.:02:30.

is the place that is a part of our bones. Because Manchester gives 's

:02:31.:02:36.

strength from the facts. This is the place. We should give something

:02:37.:02:45.

back. Always remember... Never forget... Forever Manchester. Choose

:02:46.:02:51.

love. Today was all about a city trying to

:02:52.:03:44.

somehow come to terms with what has happened. To heal and to begin that

:03:45.:03:49.

process of getting life back to normal. I'm with Alice. This is your

:03:50.:03:54.

third attempt. Is there a different energy in air? Definitely. It is

:03:55.:04:02.

quite emotional. The Mancunian spirit is really strong. I'm looking

:04:03.:04:05.

forward to this. I will be thinking of the 22 and their grieving

:04:06.:04:09.

families. And my city, how we have all pulled together. Was ever a part

:04:10.:04:14.

of you that thought about not coming? I came from London. I was

:04:15.:04:19.

worried about my family coming to support. They are tiny babies. But I

:04:20.:04:24.

believe in my city. We are strong together. We need to be here for

:04:25.:04:28.

each other. Good luck. Make your family proud. Kim Calpe --

:04:29.:04:33.

Cian Collins, I know you're not running. What are you doing here?

:04:34.:04:38.

I'm showing my support and I'm going to start a few races. It will be

:04:39.:04:42.

interesting being on the starting side and not be running side. You

:04:43.:04:48.

are here on Friday. The atmosphere was incredible. What will it be like

:04:49.:04:53.

today? It will be amazing, regardless. The fans are showing

:04:54.:04:57.

support. Everybody is here. We're making sure we stand firm and be

:04:58.:05:01.

strong for Manchester. It is important the athletes came as well.

:05:02.:05:05.

They really wanted to compete? Definitely. We don't want to be in

:05:06.:05:10.

the streets running by ourselves with nobody to support. We are happy

:05:11.:05:15.

the supporters came. We will do our best. The atmosphere is incredible.

:05:16.:05:20.

The athletes and runners looking forward to seeing you? Definitely.

:05:21.:05:24.

Manchester is doing such a great job. We love this event. I hope it

:05:25.:05:29.

will be here for many more years to come across. Great to see you, as

:05:30.:05:32.

always. Thank you. I am here with the

:05:33.:05:41.

outgoing Lord Mayor. And in coming, now the new mayor of Manchester,

:05:42.:05:45.

Andy Burnham. I would start with you, Andy. It is quite an

:05:46.:05:49.

extraordinary day to be here in Manchester, isn't it? It is an

:05:50.:05:54.

extraordinary day to be here. This is the spirit of Manchester you can

:05:55.:05:57.

feel coming through the people. They are sending the message to the

:05:58.:06:01.

terrorist, to the extremists, you will not beat us. You will not

:06:02.:06:05.

change what we are, you will not change what we do. We will move

:06:06.:06:10.

forward together. It has been an exceptionally difficult week for

:06:11.:06:14.

everybody. We will get through it and go forward together. Carl, you

:06:15.:06:20.

are very fond of this city? Yes, this is the 15th year of the actual

:06:21.:06:27.

run. It brings the crowds out. But also the different charities. I was

:06:28.:06:32.

initially running for the Lord Mayors charity and Andy was running

:06:33.:06:36.

for the homeless charity. It seemed more poignant for everybody to come

:06:37.:06:41.

together to raise money for the fund. With the red Cross and the

:06:42.:06:47.

Manchester News. Until yesterday there was ?5.7 million raised.

:06:48.:06:52.

Everybody has got their own reasons for running. I just think this was

:06:53.:06:57.

really important. So many people came to me and said they were

:06:58.:07:02.

running it as a fun run. But now they are raising money as well. That

:07:03.:07:08.

is what brings the city together. There are two very different things

:07:09.:07:12.

going on in the city today. At St Ann's Square there is still a place

:07:13.:07:19.

for moments of quiet? Yes. People are responding in the way they want

:07:20.:07:23.

to respond. Everybody is feeling the benefit of the togetherness, being

:07:24.:07:27.

with each other. That is really helping people through what is a

:07:28.:07:31.

difficult time. Obviously next week we have to move on again. We need to

:07:32.:07:37.

start talking about how we go forward. How we work together to

:07:38.:07:40.

tackle the extremism there is in our society. What do it in a way that is

:07:41.:07:45.

true to Manchester, which is about not letting the terrorists divide

:07:46.:07:50.

us. We have to hold onto the spirit of this week. Everybody behind us

:07:51.:07:55.

will have made their own individual decisions about why they are here. I

:07:56.:08:02.

know. I think they're making a point of being here. Last night, young

:08:03.:08:08.

people made a statement. They are saying, you will not change us. That

:08:09.:08:13.

is such a powerful message to send out. An amazing atmosphere. What are

:08:14.:08:20.

you expecting? Timewise expecting about 52, 50 five. You can hear a

:08:21.:08:28.

heavy cold. I'm getting a politician's excuse in first! I

:08:29.:08:35.

cannot believe I'm hearing this. You can! How many politicians have you

:08:36.:08:38.

interviewed over the years? I will give it my best. We are hoping for

:08:39.:08:45.

smiles today. Not tears. I think there will be a mixture. Emotions

:08:46.:08:50.

will come out. That is a good thing. This is the first time for many

:08:51.:08:54.

people. A lot of people have been here since Tuesday morning. This is

:08:55.:08:57.

the first time a lot of people have come to the city since Monday night

:08:58.:09:01.

to show their defiance, and also to see what it is about. That is really

:09:02.:09:06.

important, that everybody has come together and we are united. I can't

:09:07.:09:10.

speak to you any more because you have a restaurant. I will go back to

:09:11.:09:15.

JJ. He is in the crowds with summary different people.

:09:16.:09:20.

I'm with some of the guys from Chorlton runners. You are obviously

:09:21.:09:23.

local to this. This must be an important occasion today?

:09:24.:09:31.

Absolutely. It has cut home this weekend. We are here in solidarity.

:09:32.:09:35.

We are doing what we love. We will carry on with life as normal. It is

:09:36.:09:39.

really important. We are going to run proud. Absolutely. Will you be

:09:40.:09:44.

running together are going for a personal times? We might start off

:09:45.:09:49.

together. I'm not sure how we will finish, to be honest! We will give

:09:50.:09:54.

it a go. There is a particularly special energy around here today,

:09:55.:09:59.

isn't there? There certainly is. With all the emotions and everything

:10:00.:10:04.

through this week. We are all local. It means so much. Yeah. It will be

:10:05.:10:12.

an emotional day. I take it there was no part of you that thought

:10:13.:10:17.

about not coming today? Not at all, no. We are here in solidarity to

:10:18.:10:23.

give out a message to everybody. We can't let things like this stop you

:10:24.:10:26.

living your normal life. You just can't allow it. Best of luck today.

:10:27.:10:32.

Hopefully you will finish together. I'm sure you will be cheering each

:10:33.:10:34.

other on. Regardless.

:10:35.:10:42.

The klaxons sound and away they go. The elite women's race gets under

:10:43.:10:50.

way. The roads are clear. Big crowds expected. We can see them ourselves.

:10:51.:10:56.

All the way along this route they will be cheered. The masses and the

:10:57.:11:05.

senior men will go off in 15 minutes. Good morning to Paula

:11:06.:11:10.

Radcliffe. Good morning. I keep saying good morning but it is

:11:11.:11:15.

afternoon. Good afternoon, Paula. Good afternoon. Good afternoon

:11:16.:11:19.

everybody. Especially for the people out there waiting to support the

:11:20.:11:26.

runners around this course. To complete this event and this run and

:11:27.:11:32.

to get on with what makes us all show that we are going to carry on.

:11:33.:11:38.

And just to show that life goes on and to show that spirit. Katrina

:11:39.:11:44.

Wootton showing some of that fighting spirit to go with Tirunesh

:11:45.:11:49.

Dibaba. She is very much expected to run away with this race. But Katrina

:11:50.:11:55.

Wootton in good shape. An old club mate of mine from a long time ago.

:11:56.:12:02.

She raced very well at Highgate in the British ten kilometre trial.

:12:03.:12:07.

Just missed the qualifying time. She qualified for the European Cup in

:12:08.:12:11.

Minsk later this month. She will be hoping to improve on the time. And

:12:12.:12:15.

probably will not be aiming to stay with Tirunesh Dibaba for a very

:12:16.:12:22.

long. As we look at the course. It is the familiar route. Hats off

:12:23.:12:26.

to everybody. We will talk about more of this in the mass races. It

:12:27.:12:30.

has been a massive logistical exercise to make sure the event goes

:12:31.:12:36.

ahead. It is the same route. Some slight changes around Old Trafford

:12:37.:12:39.

for the masses. That is where they know they have reached halfway. They

:12:40.:12:45.

turned back around the Salford quays area, Media City across the way. And

:12:46.:12:51.

then when they come back to Mancunian Way, they see the others

:12:52.:12:57.

going in the opposite direction. 35,000 people. Not everybody can be

:12:58.:13:02.

on the course at the same time. Those roads become absolutely

:13:03.:13:04.

covered with runners for the duration of the afternoon. They

:13:05.:13:11.

finished Indians get. Where we did have the city games. We saw Cian

:13:12.:13:15.

Collins at the start. Great to see them. Friday was emotional. It was a

:13:16.:13:22.

great afternoon. Many of the elite athletes said how much they enjoyed

:13:23.:13:26.

being here, including Tirunesh Dibaba.

:13:27.:13:30.

More of the elite women shortly. Who are you running for? We're running

:13:31.:13:37.

for men today. -- amen. This is my mum's first race. We're here to

:13:38.:13:43.

support. The cancer charity is a personal one for us. We started

:13:44.:13:48.

doing the Manchester runabout four years ago. It is a personal day. The

:13:49.:13:54.

charity is close to our hearts. So mum... You don't look like a mum!

:13:55.:14:00.

Are you feeling nervous? Not yet, I think there will be very shortly

:14:01.:14:04.

when it starts. Batman said you are a superhero. I'll be all right then.

:14:05.:14:10.

He will help me out. I'm looking forward to it. It'll be a challenge.

:14:11.:14:12.

I am looking forward to it really. And raising money for this charity?

:14:13.:14:23.

Definitely. They're going to spur you on, these super giants? We will

:14:24.:14:30.

try. We will try and keep up. If we can keep up. We might have to fly

:14:31.:14:36.

from time to time. It is great to be part of this. Yes it is always

:14:37.:14:41.

fantastic. With all that's happened, still the people are out and you can

:14:42.:14:46.

feel the love of it all, it is great, a great crowd as ever. Enjoy.

:14:47.:14:57.

It is heart-stopping to look up this beautiful street and see many

:14:58.:15:02.

thousands of people behind us. All waiting and I know having done this

:15:03.:15:08.

run myself a couple of times before, this a nervous moment, an exciting

:15:09.:15:12.

moment. But every single person you can see has made their own

:15:13.:15:17.

individual decision. When they woke up this morning, to come out and

:15:18.:15:22.

less than a week after that horrific attack, to come out here on to the

:15:23.:15:27.

streets of Manchester and it is really, it is a very poignant and in

:15:28.:15:31.

different parts of this city, there are different things going on. In St

:15:32.:15:38.

Ann's Square, there is quiet and contemplation and still people in

:15:39.:15:42.

tears this morning as they go there to pay tribute to the victims. I'm

:15:43.:15:48.

going to tell you what is going to happen. There is going to be a

:15:49.:15:54.

minute's silence before every single wave. We are going to take that

:15:55.:15:58.

minute's silence and stay with the runners as they do that and hear the

:15:59.:16:05.

words from Tony Walsh the poet. He is reading a poem called Do

:16:06.:16:14.

Something. I will leave you with the minute's silence for the victims of

:16:15.:16:16.

the attack. As we know, as we have shown the

:16:17.:17:46.

world, this is the place where we do something. Do something. To show

:17:47.:17:53.

them what you're made of. Do something you've never done before.

:17:54.:17:58.

Do something to beat what you're afraid of. Do something to make your

:17:59.:18:06.

spirit soar. Do something to get your heartbeat pounding, pounding,

:18:07.:18:11.

pounding. Do something with all your heart and soul and rock and roll and

:18:12.:18:16.

do something to show we are astounding. Do something and this is

:18:17.:18:24.

how we roll. Do something to match a city's greatness. Do something

:18:25.:18:30.

through sunshine and through rain. Do something to stay, we need to

:18:31.:18:36.

hate less. Do something through courage and through pain. Do

:18:37.:18:40.

something for someone that you care for. Do something to help out with

:18:41.:18:47.

the cost. Do something for someone that you there for. Do something for

:18:48.:18:53.

someone that you've lost. Do something to tell someone you love

:18:54.:19:00.

them. Do something for someone who's gone. Do something for those with

:19:01.:19:04.

none above them. Do something for someone who lives on. Do something

:19:05.:19:10.

to stand out from the crowd and do something to keep a dream alive. Do

:19:11.:19:17.

something to make a city proud. And do something to shout, hope will

:19:18.:19:23.

survive. Do something to show you don't surrender. We don't surrender.

:19:24.:19:29.

Do something for those we owe a debt, we thank you. Do something a

:19:30.:19:36.

city will remember. Do something the world will not forget. Do something

:19:37.:19:42.

for this great city's story. Do something and show them how it's

:19:43.:19:49.

done. Do something for love. In all its glory. Do something the great

:19:50.:19:58.

Manchester, do something for Great Manchester, do something the Great

:19:59.:20:02.

Manchester Run and make it live forever! Do something, the great

:20:03.:20:09.

Manchester run, choose love, have a fantastic Manchester day. Thank you.

:20:10.:20:22.

Ladies and gentlemen Tony Walsh. AKA Longfella. Inspiring words and a lot

:20:23.:20:28.

has been said about the resolve of the people of Manchester. Now it is

:20:29.:20:32.

their chance to show their unity and their determination to carry on. It

:20:33.:20:35.

will begin one step at a time. But they will move forward and today

:20:36.:20:40.

they all move forward together. Individually, but as one. It is all

:20:41.:20:47.

about the 35,000 taking part and the rest of city. But they will

:20:48.:20:50.

appreciate the elite athletes at the front. Here we go, the Great

:20:51.:20:54.

Manchester Run. There will be an outpouring of

:20:55.:21:21.

emotion at the end for most people. For the next ten kilometres it is a

:21:22.:21:24.

chance for them to reflect and for everybody watching. But it is also a

:21:25.:21:30.

chance to show what think city is about, show what it's made of. Show

:21:31.:21:34.

what its people are about. As we have been saying all morning, it's

:21:35.:21:39.

simply incredible that so many have turned up here today. They have not

:21:40.:21:48.

been cowed by events. They're of course respectful and remember all

:21:49.:21:53.

of those who suffered so tragically. And the city has been an inspiring

:21:54.:21:58.

place to be over the last two days or so. Of course they're not all

:21:59.:22:06.

Mancunians. They have come from around the UK and some have come

:22:07.:22:10.

from different parts of world as well. Where we will be of course

:22:11.:22:16.

concentrating on the masses today. But the elite racers, we shouldn't

:22:17.:22:20.

ignore the fact that we have here in Tirunesh Dibaba one of the greatest,

:22:21.:22:25.

if not the greatest female distance runner of all time and she is going

:22:26.:22:29.

quick. That is the time she went through when she set the record

:22:30.:22:35.

here, the record being 30. 49. She did speed up in the second part on

:22:36.:22:41.

that occasion. She started crick -- quick on this day. Katrina Wootton

:22:42.:22:52.

has dropped back. Tirunesh Dibaba has the streets to herself. Katrina

:22:53.:22:58.

Wootton a little lonely in second. She will have to watch for those

:22:59.:23:02.

behind. They're about 20 seconds behind. This is the front of men's

:23:03.:23:09.

race. That is Dathan Ritzenhein, the very good American. Bernard Lagat

:23:10.:23:23.

there. And Wilson Kipsang, he won the Tokyo marathon this year. He

:23:24.:23:27.

won't be contesting the World Championships. So that kilometre,

:23:28.:23:34.

the second one is 2.50. They're not hanging around. And Dathan

:23:35.:23:40.

Ritzenhein deciding the good policy for him is to get out there and lead

:23:41.:23:46.

this. Tirunesh Dibaba, the marathon is where her sights are these days.

:23:47.:23:54.

However, she is still a real talent to be reckoned with on the roads as

:23:55.:24:03.

well over 10 kilometres. But te vents goes on as -- but the event

:24:04.:24:07.

goes on as it has done over the last few years. An event which has grown

:24:08.:24:13.

with the city and has always shown off the best of Manchester. But

:24:14.:24:19.

today more so than ever. In the men's race, it is as you were, those

:24:20.:24:25.

five still at the front. Birmingham doing his stint with Dathan

:24:26.:24:31.

Ritzenhein. Kipsang going well. Lagat in the group. Andy Vernon has

:24:32.:24:36.

dropped off. He will be running in a couple of weeks to try and get to

:24:37.:24:41.

10,000 qualifying time for the World Championships. In the women's race

:24:42.:24:46.

it is all about Tirunesh Dibaba. She has been getting quick tore the end

:24:47.:24:53.

-- quicker towards the end. She is into last kilometre and it won't be

:24:54.:24:56.

long before she can see the railway bridge that we are on the opposite

:24:57.:25:02.

side of on Deansgate. That is about 200 metres to go. It has been

:25:03.:25:07.

another display from Tirunesh Dibaba, Paula, strong as ever, she

:25:08.:25:13.

is clicking along going well. We said she might feel a bit like she

:25:14.:25:17.

is on a training run. She looks a bit like she is on a training run.

:25:18.:25:22.

She doesn't look like she is close to maximum effort f you contrast her

:25:23.:25:27.

style and expression with the closing stages of London marathon

:25:28.:25:31.

when she was struggling and pushing on. It is very different. She has

:25:32.:25:36.

recovered well from that and put on a text book display of how to bounce

:25:37.:25:45.

back. It is important to her to tick this off and to move on. To come

:25:46.:25:49.

here and support Manchester as well. But she will be now aiming for that

:25:50.:25:54.

finish line and she will have had a time in mind she would want to shoot

:25:55.:25:58.

close to. But the biggest thing was to get out and feel her legs were

:25:59.:26:01.

responding well. This is Kristel Dornay. The crowd

:26:02.:26:23.

are moving to the barriers to cheer Tirunesh Dibaba. She is a familiar

:26:24.:26:27.

sight here in Manchester. They are so pleased she is here. Tirunesh

:26:28.:26:33.

Dibaba sprinting home as she always manages to do. Still looking pretty

:26:34.:26:41.

fresh. She wins the Great Manchester 10K. Just outside 31 minutes. Maybe

:26:42.:26:48.

no more than a hard training run. But for anyone else that is world

:26:49.:26:55.

class. A smile from Tirunesh Dibaba and another superb performance from

:26:56.:27:04.

her. 31.03 the winning time. Now Dathan Ritzenhein, Mokoka and

:27:05.:27:09.

Bernard Lagat, the great 1,500 metres who is now enjoying racing on

:27:10.:27:14.

the roads and the longer distances. Doesn't have to worry about the

:27:15.:27:20.

speed. But if he is stilling hanging around at the end he will look to

:27:21.:27:25.

use that. Mokoka has not been running that well this winter, but

:27:26.:27:33.

he ran a good 12 K race in South Africa recently. It was better than

:27:34.:27:38.

the performances up to then. So he has been coming back into form.

:27:39.:27:44.

Dathan Ritzenhein won the American 25k Championship. An odd distance.

:27:45.:27:52.

His exploits in the marathon have been disappointing. He was a

:27:53.:27:55.

non-finisher in the American trials and in New York as well he didn't

:27:56.:27:59.

finish in October. So he has had a difficult year or so. He has shown

:28:00.:28:08.

potential and is probably the perfect half marathon runner and he

:28:09.:28:11.

has struggled to move up to the marathon distance. Suffered a lot

:28:12.:28:16.

with cramping, with getting his fuelling strat scombris right. But

:28:17.:28:20.

-- strategies right. But he's formidable racer over the 10

:28:21.:28:26.

kilometres and the half marathon. Started with early success in the

:28:27.:28:30.

world junior cross country Championships. In 2001 he was on the

:28:31.:28:35.

podium. And that was a huge break through. He has built on that for

:28:36.:28:39.

his career. But never quite been able to reflect that on the world

:28:40.:28:43.

stage at world Championship and Olympic level.

:28:44.:28:53.

Christelle Daunay ploddingly crowd. A great gesture from the. France has

:28:54.:29:02.

had so many atrocities to deal with. Remembered Nice. -- we all remember

:29:03.:29:13.

Nice of course. Daunay applauding the home crowd. Katrina Wootton as

:29:14.:29:24.

well. A tough race for Katrina out there having had a real go with

:29:25.:29:30.

Tirunesh Dibaba. Here is Gemma Steel. A pretty solid run. She

:29:31.:29:41.

finishes fifth in around 33.40. There has been a little bit of a

:29:42.:29:45.

break. Kip Sangwan first, then more cocoa. Ritzenhein is applying the

:29:46.:29:56.

pressure. Even though Bernard Lagat is in the twilight of his track

:29:57.:30:03.

career, he is just hovering. He is working hard. He knows every step.

:30:04.:30:09.

It is moving into his territory. I will be surprised of Ritzenhein can

:30:10.:30:15.

break him in the last 200 metres. Ritzenhein isn't a slouch. It is

:30:16.:30:19.

just that Bernard Lagat is very fast. At the end of ten kilometres

:30:20.:30:23.

it is different on the road to finishing 1500 metres or 5000 metres

:30:24.:30:30.

on the track. He sees the nine kilometre marker. He knows he has

:30:31.:30:34.

got less than three minutes of running to try everything that he

:30:35.:30:37.

can, to throw everything he can add Bernard Lagat to shake him off and

:30:38.:30:42.

get a little bit of daylight. If he is sitting on his shoulder or moving

:30:43.:30:47.

alongside him coming along a straight on the instead, then

:30:48.:30:55.

Ritzenhein is in trouble. -- Stephen Mokoka is looking tired.

:30:56.:31:06.

The tall Australian hasn't raised that much in 2017. He is chasing

:31:07.:31:14.

down for a third. Look at this. Lagat can't hold on. Ritzenhein has

:31:15.:31:21.

broken him. That is reward for Ritzenhein. He has not got this one

:31:22.:31:27.

yet. Lagat is still fighting hard. Look at the determination on his

:31:28.:31:37.

face. He is working hard. You can see how much this means to him. He

:31:38.:31:40.

has had a turbulent last couple of weeks. He has had a lot of things

:31:41.:31:45.

going on back in the US. He is probably happy to come here to let

:31:46.:31:50.

his feet and legs do the talking, to raise hard and run away from that

:31:51.:31:58.

and celebrated with a strong run. Dayton Ritzenhein of the USA, he

:31:59.:32:02.

hasn't had a lot to cheer in the last 12 months. He had a big win in

:32:03.:32:09.

the American road championships. He has Greater Manchester on this

:32:10.:32:14.

emotional day. What a win it is going to be framed. He keeps

:32:15.:32:16.

checking behind because he is expecting Lagat to catch him. He

:32:17.:32:24.

will not do that. The American wins. Ritzenhein is this your's champion.

:32:25.:32:32.

28.06 the winning time. A good frontrunning performance. Bernard

:32:33.:32:39.

Lagat finishes second. One better than last year. He thought he would

:32:40.:32:43.

be able to hang on for the kick but he couldn't. Stephen Mokoka hangs

:32:44.:32:48.

over a third. Then Birmingham. Then Wilson Kipsang.

:32:49.:32:56.

When the elites had finished, the day belonged to the masses.

:32:57.:33:00.

Undeterred by the events of the week, thousands turned out to run

:33:01.:33:04.

and to support. And of course they did Manchester proud.

:33:05.:33:11.

I want to introduce you to Allah Caron. How was it running? Good. It

:33:12.:33:19.

was fantastic. How old are you? Nine. You have run it four times to

:33:20.:33:30.

yes I had. I want to help the Children's Hospital and make people

:33:31.:33:34.

proud. You spent lots of time in hospital yourself. Your mum is here

:33:35.:33:40.

and finally you have persuaded her to run, haven't you? I am doing the

:33:41.:33:50.

ten kilometres. Have you run before? No. This will be my first time. I'm

:33:51.:33:55.

hoping I can get myself to the finish line. I'm sure the atmosphere

:33:56.:33:58.

and the adrenaline will get the cross that line. Tell me about the

:33:59.:34:04.

hospital you are raising money for? Manchester Children's Hospital. Ella

:34:05.:34:09.

has been treated there since she was born. She will need it all the way

:34:10.:34:15.

through. It was our second home. Without it she wouldn't be here.

:34:16.:34:19.

Thank you doesn't seem enough. Sam Lee victims were treated there after

:34:20.:34:25.

Monday. I have seen how the doctors can perform in emergency. They do

:34:26.:34:30.

amazing work. They stopped that number rising higher, I think. Show

:34:31.:34:37.

everybody your medal. Look at that. It's fantastic, isn't it? You're

:34:38.:34:43.

going to be a starter, aren't you? Yes, I am. Good luck and good luck

:34:44.:34:52.

to your mum. Good luck mum. And don't be nervous.

:34:53.:34:58.

Thank you. Sweet little girl. Manchester United

:34:59.:35:08.

play -- played their part in this traumatic week. And as ever, it is a

:35:09.:35:20.

fitting backdrop for this great sporting city the great people of

:35:21.:35:23.

this city again showing what they are all about.

:35:24.:35:31.

They will have fun out there as well. They will all be, I'm sure,

:35:32.:35:39.

thinking and remembering the events of this week. I think it has been

:35:40.:35:45.

interesting because I was in the USA when it happened. I think there was

:35:46.:35:51.

an initial, while surely there won't be an event. It is so good this went

:35:52.:35:59.

ahead. There was only a slight, can we do it? It was and should we do

:36:00.:36:04.

it, it is how do we do it? That was the biggest question. Of course, the

:36:05.:36:09.

security and making sure that everybody is safe. As you talked

:36:10.:36:15.

about earlier, everybody heals in their own way. Everybody carries on

:36:16.:36:19.

and moves on. We will always remember what happened. But life has

:36:20.:36:24.

to go on. Life hast to move on. We have to show that the human spirit

:36:25.:36:30.

is strong. For Sony people that is about coming out here and running,

:36:31.:36:34.

feeling that heartbeat, feeling the city alive with you along the route

:36:35.:36:40.

and coming together in this way. Along the roads in any Road race

:36:41.:36:44.

there is camaraderie and human stories. But I think more than ever

:36:45.:36:48.

today and this weekend, that will be felt in so many cities, but

:36:49.:36:51.

particularly on the streets of Manchester.

:36:52.:37:02.

Louise enjoying her vantage point. She knows what the city is all

:37:03.:37:05.

about. Not a bad runner herself, of course. She has done triathlons. I

:37:06.:37:19.

was sitting in the Square yesterday. Tony Walsh mentioned it earlier. It

:37:20.:37:24.

was really an inspiring place to be. Quiet respect. Some families were

:37:25.:37:29.

there. That floral tribute is growing and will continue to grow.

:37:30.:37:35.

But today it is a tribute of a different type.

:37:36.:37:50.

Young and old, they have come to take part and they have, go to

:37:51.:37:56.

cheer. I have never seen summary people out watching this event. It

:37:57.:38:01.

has always been popular but it is so good to see so many out.

:38:02.:38:07.

As well as coming together to run for their city today, everyone has a

:38:08.:38:11.

personal reason to be here as well. These are just a few of their

:38:12.:38:16.

stories. I'm running for a mental health

:38:17.:38:22.

charity. That is because I have had my own battles with mental health in

:38:23.:38:27.

the past, starting from when I was 11 years old. That sort of spiralled

:38:28.:38:30.

into five years of self harm and depression. It culminated in a few

:38:31.:38:37.

suicide attempts. The final one was the point at which I thought, this

:38:38.:38:44.

really isn't OK. That feeling of you are ready to leave everything and

:38:45.:38:48.

everyone behind, it's actually quite scary to know that I was at that

:38:49.:38:55.

point where nothing at all mattered to me any more.

:38:56.:39:06.

I am 18. I am a blind runner in this year's Great Manchester Run. I

:39:07.:39:11.

basically want to give something back to the hospital for the amount

:39:12.:39:14.

of care and support they have given me and my family for the last 18

:39:15.:39:20.

years. They kind of give people the ability to be independent because

:39:21.:39:25.

site is such a factor. It is one of your main senses. They try and

:39:26.:39:30.

preserve that as much as they can. They give someone the opportunity to

:39:31.:39:35.

live their lives -- life to the max. See RPS is a chronic nerve pain

:39:36.:39:41.

condition. It is like having your legs are your arms or your hands in

:39:42.:39:49.

burning oil, nonstop. You want to scream. Every hour of the day you

:39:50.:39:53.

wanted to stop but it can't. There is nothing out there, there is no

:39:54.:39:57.

cure for this condition. This is what we need to change. When I cross

:39:58.:40:01.

that finish line I will have tears running down my face. I'm supporting

:40:02.:40:05.

everybody affected by this condition. That is why I do it. We

:40:06.:40:15.

are running for when you wish upon a star, a charity that helps grant

:40:16.:40:17.

wishes for children with life-threatening illnesses. But we

:40:18.:40:23.

are doing it slightly different than quite a few people. We are doing it

:40:24.:40:28.

in a caterpillar. It is the longest caterpillar I have seen.

:40:29.:40:36.

That is what those guys are doing. It is so important. It is

:40:37.:40:41.

unbelievable. They are a great bunch of guys.

:40:42.:40:52.

Amazing. Realistically I know my cancer currently can't be cured. But

:40:53.:40:57.

I'm hoping by exercise I can day as well as possible for as long as

:40:58.:41:02.

possible. I'm actually running for an organisation called Pegasus

:41:03.:41:04.

riding for the disabled and every Sunday we teach kids and adults with

:41:05.:41:10.

disabilities how to ride horses. There is nothing quite like seeing a

:41:11.:41:13.

kid who has never ridden a horse before, whose parents are perhaps a

:41:14.:41:16.

little bit nervous about bringing them down, who may have severe

:41:17.:41:21.

disabilities, and then putting that child on a pony and seen the smile

:41:22.:41:26.

on their face. I can turn a up on a Sunday morning feeling grumpy and

:41:27.:41:30.

fed cup, and ten minutes into teaching a lesson I will not feel

:41:31.:41:32.

like that any more. And that is amazing.

:41:33.:41:41.

I'm with some of Helen's biggest fans. What an incredible woman she

:41:42.:41:50.

is. She is so incredible. We're totally inspired. She isn't thinking

:41:51.:41:56.

of herself. She is just thinking of children she can get riding. And see

:41:57.:42:03.

inspires more people. It is an act of selflessness that is so

:42:04.:42:06.

inspiring. What do you think today will mean for her? I think the whole

:42:07.:42:12.

day is just so emotional after everything that has happened

:42:13.:42:15.

anywhere. But going through the chemotherapy she has been going

:42:16.:42:20.

through and just being part of today, part of Manchester, it will

:42:21.:42:25.

been so much more. I know you said you did not want to speak. Put in

:42:26.:42:30.

context how amazing she is? Absolutely brilliant. This is the

:42:31.:42:34.

fourth one. It is the first one she has done with chemo. She had could

:42:35.:42:38.

have gone down the cancer rude but she has chosen not to. This is

:42:39.:42:42.

specifically for riding for a the disabled. This is someone who works

:42:43.:42:48.

full-time, who keeps chickens and horses, which is why, if we turn

:42:49.:42:54.

around, that was always the joke. When she is not busy doing something

:42:55.:42:57.

else, she is fighting crime at night.

:42:58.:43:00.

She is something else. I'm here with Tony Watt, who you will be familiar

:43:01.:43:04.

with, reading that incredible poem at the vigil. You have been reading

:43:05.:43:09.

another poem at the start. How has it been today? Very emotional. I am

:43:10.:43:16.

always trying to keep in mind why this is happening to me, why this is

:43:17.:43:19.

happening in Manchester. The reaction to the first poem has been

:43:20.:43:23.

incredible around the world. People give stopping me, they have tears in

:43:24.:43:28.

their eyes. I have a pome today written a couple of years ago. But

:43:29.:43:33.

as written with the other poem, lines gaining new residents, new

:43:34.:43:37.

meaning. It really does have new meaning. You are very clever with

:43:38.:43:43.

words and words can in some ways help, can't there? We looked at art

:43:44.:43:49.

and artists and musicians and poets and writers to say what the can't

:43:50.:43:55.

say ourselves. This city is famous for its sport, and for its

:43:56.:43:58.

community. But also for arts and abuse against poultry. Artists say

:43:59.:44:04.

the big things for us. We have been standing here and we have seen three

:44:05.:44:09.

waves go off so far. On every single person I have seen, even where we

:44:10.:44:13.

are now, there are smiles at the start of what is something special

:44:14.:44:18.

for each individual person. I been changing the words of my poem until

:44:19.:44:24.

I stepped on the podium. I had a line at the end, we will fight their

:44:25.:44:28.

fear with fun. I changed it at the last minute. If we are choosing

:44:29.:44:33.

love, we're rejecting hatred and fear and do it with a smile on our

:44:34.:44:38.

faces. They are doing that. Thank you. And thank you for your words.

:44:39.:44:43.

Now we have a celebrity finisher. We have a couple of finishers. We have

:44:44.:45:01.

Peter Hooke. Or Peter Ook. You lost an H. I lost it a long time ago.

:45:02.:45:06.

Talk about the people who pulled you through. There was fantastic

:45:07.:45:11.

support. That is the most people I have seen and I have done eleven and

:45:12.:45:14.

I know the people are with us. I'm very pleased. From eleven to a

:45:15.:45:21.

debutant. What struck me was the number... He got in my head by

:45:22.:45:26.

saying he couldn't decide he needed the loo. I always seem to be

:45:27.:45:31.

interviewed by you about the toilet. But what struck me was the banners

:45:32.:45:34.

that just say, thank you. You want to say thank you back. Because the

:45:35.:45:43.

atmosphere is fantastic and more than pride and defiance, you can't

:45:44.:45:47.

sum it up. It is just a great atmosphere. Having done it eleven

:45:48.:45:51.

times, the emotions have been different. What was going through

:45:52.:45:56.

your head? You know, the atrocity is in your mind all the time and it has

:45:57.:46:01.

been, I went to St Ann's Square before and it just breaks your

:46:02.:46:04.

heart. I'm feeling very emotional. It has been a bad week. What you

:46:05.:46:13.

have been doing has been giving so much back. That what is they are

:46:14.:46:17.

doing. It is a day for all of us I think. Goodlike to them out -- good

:46:18.:46:22.

luck to them out there. A great cause they're raising money for and

:46:23.:46:27.

so many will have made plans in the weeks and months leading up to this

:46:28.:46:35.

and events to some extent taking over those, their own aspirations.

:46:36.:46:40.

But of course so important that they stick to those plans that they carry

:46:41.:46:46.

on with what that they were going to do. There is another group. They all

:46:47.:46:52.

look... Not quite sure what they are dressed as. A bit further away to be

:46:53.:47:01.

able to tell. They have been going just over an hour. They started with

:47:02.:47:06.

the first wave. 63 minutes as they are crossing the line in front of

:47:07.:47:11.

me. Many of these, the different colours they're wearing, the White

:47:12.:47:15.

Wave, the orange. They're all mingling together now. What this

:47:16.:47:19.

meant, this event was meant to be about. Always will be about. They

:47:20.:47:25.

will cock back in future years I'm sure. But they will of course

:47:26.:47:34.

remember 2017. I think Peter Hook was right, I have never seen so many

:47:35.:47:37.

people watching. You can see the crowds. There is some of the

:47:38.:47:44.

University group. 2,000 of them taking part. They will have plenty

:47:45.:47:52.

of support I'm sure. As was mentioned we had the half marathon

:47:53.:47:58.

today as well. I'm sure that event will continue to grow. The 10k in

:47:59.:48:06.

itself a massive challenge. As Louise mentioned plenty of people

:48:07.:48:12.

who is their first 10k, maybe they will move on to the half marathon.

:48:13.:48:17.

Still a few waves to go. I think 3 clock the last one. At the finish,

:48:18.:48:22.

it is starting to... Get a little bit crowded there as more and more

:48:23.:48:27.

people finish their day, finish their run. I'm at the finish, how

:48:28.:48:45.

are you feeling? Exhausted. I tried to go below 37. I will have to wait

:48:46.:48:49.

to see the times. It was a good atmosphere. I was trying to get on

:48:50.:48:56.

the 100. It was tough out there? Yes it is quite warm. The atmosphere

:48:57.:49:02.

is... A bit of a strange atmosphere with what happened. I used to teach

:49:03.:49:07.

in Manchester a few years ago and Molly was one of my student, there

:49:08.:49:12.

is some children at the school I used to teach at at the Arena, but

:49:13.:49:18.

luckily they're all right. But it great to show we're strong and we

:49:19.:49:21.

can come back and all the crowds have been amazing. Fantastic. Great

:49:22.:49:34.

to see you here. Thank you. Johnny one of many finishers coming through

:49:35.:49:38.

on Deansgate. I have seen one of my good friends actually. I will give

:49:39.:49:42.

him some stick after. But he didn't look like a happy face as he made

:49:43.:49:48.

his way down, Will. I will call you after! So many people. Paula and

:49:49.:49:57.

Brendan are here. Paula you have been here many times, this one a bit

:49:58.:50:01.

different? It is always special, but I think today it is more special

:50:02.:50:08.

than ever. There is a reason it is called Greater Manchester and it is

:50:09.:50:11.

shown there today. I think the amount of people just coming to

:50:12.:50:15.

support, people who wanted to come and take part in the event just to

:50:16.:50:20.

show that that human spirit fights on and it is personified in road

:50:21.:50:27.

racing we see the friendship stories, but it is showing this is a

:50:28.:50:32.

spirit that will always fight on. Brendan, we talked to you at the

:50:33.:50:35.

start and we knew it was in the hands of the council, but they gave

:50:36.:50:40.

you the go ahead and you knew this was the spirit that would shine

:50:41.:50:43.

through. Only because it is Manchester and the people have been

:50:44.:50:48.

amazing all week. They have been brilliantly led by the civic

:50:49.:50:55.

authorities and Sir Richard Leach has been magnificent, the response

:50:56.:50:59.

of city, he has been leading and the people have been behind him. They

:51:00.:51:03.

have been telling us all week, we are coming, even if the race is

:51:04.:51:07.

cancelled. We provide a stage and the people of Manchester have

:51:08.:51:11.

occupied the stage so well. One other guy who has been here pounding

:51:12.:51:19.

the streets, Anthony Crolla. Talk to us about how that was as an

:51:20.:51:27.

experience and I know your cousin was affected by the events on Monday

:51:28.:51:32.

and you're running with your boxing crew and thousands of people. It

:51:33.:51:35.

must have been an amazing experience? Brilliant. I didn't

:51:36.:51:44.

think it could surpass last year and the last K you got carried by the

:51:45.:51:49.

crowd. It was brilliant and makes you proud to be a Mancunian. You're

:51:50.:51:56.

not competitive at all, but who has the better time. Scott Quigg

:51:57.:52:01.

probably. My excuse was I was making sure my mate finished. But it is a

:52:02.:52:15.

good la but good money. For Tirunesh Dibaba it was important for her to

:52:16.:52:20.

be here? Yes, she loves the city of Manchester and she had her text book

:52:21.:52:24.

demonstration display out there. Dominated the race from start to

:52:25.:52:28.

finish. In stark contrast to the men's race where we saw a much

:52:29.:52:33.

greater battle and the person who wanted it more who won. I'm sure

:52:34.:52:40.

everybody has different memories of today. But it will be back again

:52:41.:52:45.

next year, Brendan, just as good, if not better, because this event just

:52:46.:52:52.

keeps going? You can't hold back the great city of Manchester. I'm so

:52:53.:52:57.

proud of reaction of city and the people who have responded and it is

:52:58.:53:02.

fantastic that Anthony is here and Tirunesh Dibaba, the greatest female

:53:03.:53:08.

athlete, three times Olympic champion, coming here. Everyone

:53:09.:53:10.

nervous about what may happen and what is going to happen. But they

:53:11.:53:14.

came here and showed their strength and Manchester won. It really did.

:53:15.:53:20.

Perfect way to sum it up. Thank you all. Denise. Oh! Shattered. It is

:53:21.:53:31.

our first official 10k. Best time as well. We only been running six

:53:32.:53:39.

months And you're here. And we are both Nannies running for your

:53:40.:53:43.

grandchildren. You're never. Absolutely. The shot of you two

:53:44.:53:47.

coming up there, arm in arm was beautiful. But it echo what is today

:53:48.:53:53.

is about. Definitely we have been emotional all day. It has been a

:53:54.:54:02.

brilliant day. Rah And we are running for cancer research after

:54:03.:54:08.

losing a colleague last year. All's good. It made my day seeing you.

:54:09.:54:15.

Enjoy it. Yes we will have a few gin and tonics. I could meet you.

:54:16.:54:21.

Naughty nannies. Thank you very much. Andy and quite rightly, wiping

:54:22.:54:34.

away the sweat. How are you feel? People probably think I don't make

:54:35.:54:39.

much sense in interviews, but I will make less. The body's drained. I

:54:40.:54:45.

just couldn't, all I had in my head is the mayor can't give up. So I had

:54:46.:54:50.

to finish. But it was hard. When you have so many people on the run and

:54:51.:54:55.

lining and supporting again. Considering what we had this week?

:54:56.:55:01.

How lucky am I to represent a place like this and people like these. It

:55:02.:55:05.

is just unbelievable. It has been the darkest time we have lived

:55:06.:55:08.

through, but I could not be more proud of the people of Manchester

:55:09.:55:12.

this week. They have shown the world what they're about. Togetherness,

:55:13.:55:16.

solidarity and it is a a message that we are not going to be beaten

:55:17.:55:20.

by the terrorists, we are not going to be changed, we are not going to

:55:21.:55:26.

let them alter our way of life. That is the best message we could send.

:55:27.:55:30.

As soon as it was decided it would go ahead, you had visions of this

:55:31.:55:34.

response? We were unsure if I'm honest. You always are. We were in

:55:35.:55:39.

the shock of what happened. Struggling to come to terms. But

:55:40.:55:43.

Manchester that is kind of place. You don't beat us easily. That is

:55:44.:55:49.

what we have shown. This vindicates it and people have come here, never

:55:50.:55:54.

mind been worried about coming here, they have made a point of it. That

:55:55.:55:58.

speaks volumes about the Manchester people. It is something we have

:55:59.:56:06.

enjoyed and you can say the mayor did complete the Great Manchester

:56:07.:56:09.

Run. Crawled around, but I did it. Thank you. We are back at the start

:56:10.:56:18.

with JJ I have stood at the start before and it is always very

:56:19.:56:24.

emotional. But today sort of being a spectator you get a sense of massive

:56:25.:56:30.

endeavour we have been watching. It is a special day and I feel honoured

:56:31.:56:35.

to have been in the heart of it. The crowds have been fantastic and I

:56:36.:56:39.

haven't had much ex-pianos of Manchester -- experience of

:56:40.:56:43.

Manchester and I have had the biggest welcome in this city and for

:56:44.:56:46.

anyone who doesn't know Manchester, this is it being beamed into your

:56:47.:56:50.

living room and you can see how special it is. It is six years since

:56:51.:56:56.

you were yourself injured in an explosion and it's got to bring a

:56:57.:57:00.

special poignancy. Yes this is a... It is a difficult weekend for me

:57:01.:57:06.

this one. There is an idea of celebration they made it and some of

:57:07.:57:11.

my friends were not so fortunate. This was a rebirth for me and I came

:57:12.:57:17.

back stronger and the whole area will come back stronger from this.

:57:18.:57:22.

On that positive message, thank you. And what I have felt as well we have

:57:23.:57:27.

been here and the runners have been here and the spectators, just to

:57:28.:57:32.

stand up and be counted as part of this I mazing experience that it has

:57:33.:57:38.

been today. What an incredible moving and special day. Thousands of

:57:39.:57:43.

people here filling the streets of Manchester in a statement of

:57:44.:57:46.

strength, resilience, unity and defiance. A memorable day for so

:57:47.:57:54.

many people but for right reasons. That is all we have got time for

:57:55.:58:01.

today from Manchester's Great run. # When your heart is broken and you

:58:02.:58:11.

need a helping love # When you're so much in love you don't know how much

:58:12.:58:13.

you can stand # Ten story love song # # It can

:58:14.:58:24.

take you higher # And I love you too! We are

:58:25.:58:46.

Manchester. We are Manchester. We are Manchester. We are Manchester.

:58:47.:58:50.

We are Manchester. We are Manchester. We are Manchester.

:58:51.:58:59.
