Welcome to Diamond League highlights from Rome. We're back in Europe now

:00:49.:00:54.

and with eight weeks to go until the start of the World Championships in

:00:55.:00:57.

London many of the athletes in Italy's capital were looking to

:00:58.:00:58.

impress. So let's get straight into the

:00:59.:01:24.

action with your commentators Steve Cram and Tim Hutchins. Good evening

:01:25.:01:34.

everybody. There is the line-up. That's Russell of Jamaica. And there

:01:35.:01:47.

is Pedroso. A former Cuban. Just one 400 metres hurdles this year. This

:01:48.:01:57.

is Theron Nel. Performeded badly in Rio. There is the world champion in

:01:58.:02:03.

2013 and retained her title in 2015 from Moscow. She was champion once

:02:04.:02:08.

again in Beijing. Fastest non-US athlete this year with the season's

:02:09.:02:14.

best of 54.5. That was a couple of weeks back. Sara Petersen only

:02:15.:02:23.

world-class for the last two or three years the 30-year-old. Doyle

:02:24.:02:29.

goes in lane three for Great Britain. Just one 400 metres

:02:30.:02:35.

hurledles this year. Well, the conditions are just about

:02:36.:02:58.

perfect in Rome. It's a warm evening. No breeze in the arena

:02:59.:03:04.

either. It looks like lane eight, Russell has gone out the quickest of

:03:05.:03:08.

all. She was fifth in the last World Championships. She would have been

:03:09.:03:14.

disappointed with her seventh in Rio last year.

:03:15.:03:26.

Russell. They come to this barrier. Russell has really attacked the

:03:27.:03:44.

first 300 metres. Going strongly is Sara Petson. It will be Russell.

:03:45.:03:50.

Well, my word. Running scared they say in those outside lanes when you

:03:51.:03:53.

have very little idea of what's going on inside you. You're

:03:54.:03:58.

concentrating on your stride pattern and on getting the barriers right.

:03:59.:04:01.

You don't spend that much attention on those inside you, but you're sort

:04:02.:04:07.

of aware of them in your peripheral vision, but she never really gave

:04:08.:04:10.

them a chance to come into view. That was a brilliant run from

:04:11.:04:15.

Russell. The Jamaican winning. A season's best for her. What the

:04:16.:04:19.

fifth fastest time in the world this year. The Jamaican really strong.

:04:20.:04:27.

She went out hard because she was chasing the American down. She

:04:28.:04:31.

didn't fall apart and kept her stride pattern together. Really

:04:32.:04:35.

strong at the end and was watching for the challenge up on the big

:04:36.:04:39.

screen, but it never really materialised. A really good

:04:40.:04:43.

performance. A fairly comfortable win. Two or three there with

:04:44.:04:51.

disappointing performances. Still to come, Chijindu Ujah faces Ronnie

:04:52.:05:07.

Baker in the 100 metres. Schippers is the best hope in the 100 metres.

:05:08.:05:11.

We will have all the best of the action from some top class field

:05:12.:05:21.

events. One non-starter in the steeplechase.

:05:22.:05:32.

We have Conseslus Kipruto. We saw him at the Doha Diamond League. Not

:05:33.:05:37.

running particularly well over 3,000 metres flat it has to be said. He

:05:38.:05:43.

has some familiar figures up against him. Soufiane El Bakkali. So

:05:44.:05:57.

Conseslus Kipruto is the favourite here, but you've got to watch out

:05:58.:06:04.

for the 21-year-old. We have got Nicholas Bett in here. Then we

:06:05.:06:15.

always have to factor in others. Ezekiel Kemboi is always surrounded

:06:16.:06:36.

by some drama. The pace is quick. They should have a chance of going

:06:37.:06:40.

close to eight minutes. They started quickly. A cracking field in the

:06:41.:06:48.

women's triple jump including the top three from the Olympic Games in

:06:49.:06:52.

Rio last year. The Queen of the triple jump. She's still on top, but

:06:53.:07:05.

she has got some real challengers. Ibarguen is still the one to beat.

:07:06.:07:17.

The world lead is 14.96. Almost 15 metres already so early in the

:07:18.:07:24.

season. It could be a big year for her. She started off well, the

:07:25.:07:32.

Kazakhstan athlete. So second round. 14.64 and improving on her 14.24

:07:33.:07:43.

from round one. She is a massive figure. As Steve said, she tops the

:07:44.:07:48.

world's rankings and that doesn't look too bad either. That coming

:07:49.:07:53.

down between the leading jump so far in the competition and the world

:07:54.:08:01.

lead. Her own world lead of 14.96. When she fills out and powers up so

:08:02.:08:07.

to speak, she is only 21, the world indoor champion. Nowhere near the

:08:08.:08:15.

board there. 14.76 gives her a nice lead. The pace has just dropped and

:08:16.:08:26.

all of a sudden the youngster, the world junior champion is slotted in

:08:27.:08:34.

behind him. Taking the water jump much better on that occasion. The

:08:35.:08:41.

Moroccan just gives a nudge and says, "I've come through on the

:08:42.:08:48.

inside." Conseslus Kipruto comes around with two laps to go. Slowed a

:08:49.:08:53.

bit after that, but they are not far away from an eight minute pace. It

:08:54.:08:57.

will be a quick race and all of a sudden, look at the youngster there.

:08:58.:09:10.

So they take the bell. Losing ground. So it is Conseslus Kipruto.

:09:11.:09:24.

Conseslus Kipruto responds. There is a gap between these three and

:09:25.:09:30.

Birech. Conseslus Kipruto holds him off and that's going to be soul

:09:31.:09:38.

destroying for the youngster. It is the Moroccan now. Conseslus Kipruto

:09:39.:09:44.

the last time into the water jump. Conseslus Kipruto holds the inside

:09:45.:09:47.

and does it well. The two of them come off the water jump at top

:09:48.:09:52.

speed. It's a battle for third. One more barrier to go and Conseslus

:09:53.:09:57.

Kipruto is under some real pressure. Soufiane El Bakkali will be running

:09:58.:10:01.

a personal best. Conseslus Kipruto comes away again. The Olympic

:10:02.:10:05.

champion has enough. A wag of the finger. Eight minutes four. Fastest

:10:06.:10:12.

in the world this year. Birech just pipped his young team-mate for third

:10:13.:10:17.

spot. Well, that's a massive jump forward for the Moroccan though. He

:10:18.:10:21.

really challenged Conseslus Kipruto. Here you can see the Moroccan

:10:22.:10:26.

leaning into him. He almost forced him on to the in field. He gave him

:10:27.:10:32.

a shove and stayed alongside him and cleared the barrier well. Look at

:10:33.:10:37.

the leg speed. Very impressive, indeed. A cheeky glance back at his

:10:38.:10:43.

competitor there. Look at how quickly they opened up the gap.

:10:44.:10:51.

There was a 15 metre gap. 8.04. There is so much more to come. Well,

:10:52.:11:02.

he's delighted. He doesn't mind he has come second. The man who has

:11:03.:11:07.

been dominant for the last few years. Just looking further down,

:11:08.:11:19.

Birech did get the third spot. Can the Olympic champion respond? She

:11:20.:11:24.

has been dominant for so long in the triple jump? She is trying to find a

:11:25.:11:30.

bit. She looks anxiously back. Gets the white flag. Much better from the

:11:31.:11:34.

Columbian. Couldn't have been better really. Perfect. One isn't metre

:11:35.:11:45.

from the Plasticine. Ibarguen doing her best jump. I

:11:46.:11:57.

thought Ibarguen looked ropey. A slight stutter before. She's so

:11:58.:12:04.

tall. She is about 6'2". She looked quite untidy there. Very little

:12:05.:12:08.

rhythm for fluidity to it, but it comes down way out there and I think

:12:09.:12:15.

it is a slight improvement on her 14.76 in round two. The middle phase

:12:16.:12:21.

was a length. There was no length to it. But she can get away with those

:12:22.:12:25.

dimensions and extends her lead. Well, the pole vault continuing. We

:12:26.:12:35.

have seen some going clear. That's another one going clear. Olly

:12:36.:12:41.

Bradshaw who was in such good form in Manchester last week, cleared her

:12:42.:12:48.

opening height. She has retired from the competition, the Briton. That's

:12:49.:12:53.

worrying news from a very good athlete. This is the Olympic

:12:54.:13:04.

champion. Her opening height is 4.65. Very, very business-like,

:13:05.:13:11.

matter of fact. No fuss at all. European champion and then Olympic

:13:12.:13:21.

champion last year, the 27-year-old. Men's sprinting is looking for the

:13:22.:13:26.

next big thing. It was Ronnie Baker's time to shine with Britain's

:13:27.:13:32.

Chijindu Ujah in third. The race was wind assisted, but both men finished

:13:33.:13:42.

in under ten seconds. There is Ronnie Baker. Prior to that he

:13:43.:13:52.

finished second in 9.97 in Kingston in the world challenge meeting down

:13:53.:14:01.

in Jamaica. He's in four. Jimmy Vicaut for has not really produced

:14:02.:14:04.

the results expected of him, the 25-year-old Frenchman. Only seventh

:14:05.:14:09.

in Rio. He has just left his long-term coach. There is Mike

:14:10.:14:18.

Rodgers. A great indoor sprinter. Chijindu Ujah in good form, the

:14:19.:14:22.

former European junior champion at 100. That was back in 2013. He was

:14:23.:14:28.

third. A good run against the best of the Americans in a windy 9.95. So

:14:29.:14:39.

Baker in four. Watch him in fine form. A really good start, but Baker

:14:40.:14:47.

beginning to get into his running. Coming through, Chijindu Ujah.

:14:48.:14:52.

That's a brilliant run. Chijindu Ujah takes it. Against a good, good

:14:53.:14:57.

field. Chijindu Ujah clocking up one of the best wins of his career as a

:14:58.:15:06.

senior athlete and the time 10.02. It might be anything that special.

:15:07.:15:10.

The field that he has beaten Chijindu Ujah, and it is confirmed

:15:11.:15:14.

as a season's best for the Briton. Jimmy Vicaut who looked to be

:15:15.:15:18.

finishing strongly could do nothing about the Briton to his right coming

:15:19.:15:26.

through. Ronnie Baker third. He has taken some big, big scalps there,

:15:27.:15:30.

Chijindu Ujah and that might really start his season, Steve, getting on

:15:31.:15:31.

to a very important roll. He has been running well since his

:15:32.:15:41.

season started and this is just adding to that. He surged really,

:15:42.:15:47.

just maintained his form coming through. Not the best of starts. You

:15:48.:15:57.

thought Baker would come onto that. A good run indoors. But he just does

:15:58.:16:02.

not come on. Jimmy Vicaut probably thought his danger was to his left.

:16:03.:16:08.

But CJ comes through for the win. He has run under ten seconds this year.

:16:09.:16:14.

He is getting closer and closer to getting back to that sub ten seconds

:16:15.:16:19.

form he had a few years ago. It has been a disappointing year or two,

:16:20.:16:24.

particularly last year. But this year he looks in great shape. That

:16:25.:16:30.

is a big win for him. We move now onto the women's triple jump. Rock

:16:31.:16:36.

has is still leading. Nobody has been able to challenge the tall

:16:37.:16:40.

Venezuelan. That is another good jump from her. Really consistent. A

:16:41.:16:54.

very slight following wind. Although the air in the stadium feels very

:16:55.:17:05.

still. That improves. 14.8 four. The last chance for the Olympic

:17:06.:17:07.

champion. Heading for defeat That is close. It does not look

:17:08.:17:19.

quite good enough. You can see the line yourself on there. That is only

:17:20.:17:24.

a guide, but she probably knows. She is waving to the cloud. It is the

:17:25.:17:31.

Venezuelan who will win tonight. Six centimetres short. Is this the

:17:32.:17:37.

handing over of the mantle so to speak. The world number one is

:17:38.:17:50.

powerfully built. Sandy Morris has had a difficult time, the American.

:17:51.:17:57.

Under pressure. She will be really disappointed with that performance

:17:58.:18:01.

tonight. Two attempts to get over two point 40. She now goes out. From

:18:02.:18:10.

the track it is the men's 800 metres, full of real interest. The

:18:11.:18:18.

most intriguing name is Nijel Amos, the Olympic silver-medallist from

:18:19.:18:24.

2012. Is he in any sort of form? He has changed his coaching regime. It

:18:25.:18:37.

is almost as if they go together. He is more of an 800 metres specialist.

:18:38.:18:44.

They have asked for a reasonable pace here. The tour 19-year-old is a

:18:45.:18:56.

talent. A world junior champion. The winner in Shanghai could be the one

:18:57.:18:59.

that everybody else is watching here. Amos on the inside started

:19:00.:19:07.

pretty quickly. The pacemaker on the outside has got a bit fast over this

:19:08.:19:16.

first one. They are settling into a decent pace. But it is a bit quick

:19:17.:19:21.

for me. Not even for me, but for them as well. It is one of the

:19:22.:19:27.

problems if you have an inexperienced pacemaker. He is in a

:19:28.:19:31.

world of his own, enjoying himself, looking great. That is one of the

:19:32.:19:37.

most ridiculous gaps I have seen for a long time. The pack are not even

:19:38.:19:43.

remotely interested. Oh, Amos has gone down. They were so bunched it

:19:44.:19:50.

was going to happen. You are absolutely right. Amos was clipped.

:19:51.:20:05.

But the race is on now. If they catch him here, it will be partly

:20:06.:20:14.

because he went through in 77. The charge is on. He is out in front,

:20:15.:20:20.

but he will be pulling up trees in the home straight. Will he become?

:20:21.:20:35.

He is going to hang on for the win, the Polish worrier. He just got

:20:36.:20:47.

taken by surprise. The race was a mess, Tim. I do not mind that.

:20:48.:20:52.

Sometimes you have to learn to raise and that is what he is always good

:20:53.:20:56.

at. That type of race will play into his hands. But he attacked first and

:20:57.:21:03.

he got the advantage. He ends up with the win. He was a bit tired in

:21:04.:21:11.

the end. Brazier finished quickly as well, but such a messy race. Such a

:21:12.:21:19.

shame to see Amos go down. But the Polish runner retained the metre

:21:20.:21:24.

down the straight. He attacked. He got himself into a decent position

:21:25.:21:28.

down the back straight. He kept looking at the screen. He is a big

:21:29.:21:35.

talent, the 19-year-old. It might be a bit of a lesson for Brazier. That

:21:36.:21:55.

was always likely result. Lewandowski knows where to put

:21:56.:21:59.

himself in those sort of racers. Now we are at the women's high jump.

:22:00.:22:15.

1.80 eight. That is nice. She generates a lot of speed. She is

:22:16.:22:24.

another authorised neutral athlete, in other words are Russian. Plenty

:22:25.:22:35.

of athletes are clear at this height. It is the first attempt for

:22:36.:22:43.

Silva. This might be a little bit of

:22:44.:23:00.

stretch. Do not listen to me. What do I know? Just rattled it slightly.

:23:01.:23:13.

The world champion in Beijing, let's not forget. She seems to have warmed

:23:14.:23:20.

to the competition tonight, the Cuban. That is a seasoned's best for

:23:21.:23:22.

her. 4.70 five. She makes it look easy.

:23:23.:23:42.

Now this is the third and final attempt for the Kiwi. All smiles.

:23:43.:23:50.

You have got to be so positive, you have got to be absolutely on top of

:23:51.:23:55.

it. She is still only 20, the Olympic bronze-medallist. Oh! It

:23:56.:24:04.

stayed up and she gave it such a clatter. I am trying to think of a

:24:05.:24:08.

polite word to describe how lucky she is. That is amazing, and she

:24:09.:24:15.

knows it. A huge sigh of relief. The third and final attempt. To be fair

:24:16.:24:25.

she was mostly clear of it by the time she made contact. The athletes

:24:26.:24:33.

are stripped off and ready for the 400 metres in the Olympic Stadium.

:24:34.:24:41.

It is a solid line-up. MacPherson goes in lane five. She is world

:24:42.:24:50.

champion in the indoor arena. Hastings is going in lane four.

:24:51.:25:04.

Williams is 35 years old. Took bronze medal ten years ago in soccer

:25:05.:25:06.

at World Championships. She has gone off again with full

:25:07.:25:32.

commitment, Hastings. She has moved away from mills in blue. Hastings is

:25:33.:25:36.

so exciting to watch because she throws everything at the first 300

:25:37.:25:40.

metres and plays catch me if you game. But MacPherson is holding her

:25:41.:25:53.

on the back straight. Zelniak is also going well. But they come into

:25:54.:25:59.

the straight. Has Hastings got the legs? She has got a two-metre gap at

:26:00.:26:06.

the moment, but they are coming back at her. Williams Mills is coming

:26:07.:26:11.

through to challenge. Hastings wins this by three metres. An impressive

:26:12.:26:16.

run by the American. I think Williams Mills just comes through to

:26:17.:26:24.

snatch second and Zelniak is third. The record stays very safe. Typical

:26:25.:26:43.

for Hastings. She got off really well and then she checked back. When

:26:44.:26:49.

she came into the straight she just starts to move again. Instead of

:26:50.:26:56.

going through 200 and keeping your foot down and hanging on, she just

:26:57.:27:03.

backed up a little bit. With 50 to go she started to tire, and the

:27:04.:27:11.

others are charging. But she is yet to get going. Yes, there is more to

:27:12.:27:14.

come. The men's javelin has been grabbing

:27:15.:27:26.

everyone's attention this year. There is a great line-up. The former

:27:27.:27:34.

Olympic champion Shaun Walcott is in this as well.

:27:35.:27:46.

This man as well from the Czech Republic is in good form already

:27:47.:27:52.

this year and that is another good start to the competition. Over 85

:27:53.:27:58.

metres. It is kind of dead air tonight and it is warm and mild. It

:27:59.:28:03.

is not as muggy as it sometimes is in Rome, but not a breath of wind

:28:04.:28:08.

out there. That is a good start from him. Britain's 20-year-old Morgan

:28:09.:28:15.

Lake at this third and final attempt. She is the world junior

:28:16.:28:21.

champion from 2014. This is well within her compass and that was a

:28:22.:28:28.

lovely clearance from Morgan Lake. That is a seal of great ability in

:28:29.:28:35.

this competition on that occasion. She looks in really sharp form

:28:36.:28:40.

already this year. When she was banned and the Russian team was

:28:41.:28:48.

banned, she cleared 2.3. It looks as though she is in superb form. The

:28:49.:28:58.

world number one. He looks a bit more optimistic about that one and

:28:59.:29:05.

well he might. 86 metres, something like that. The others are applauding

:29:06.:29:16.

that effort from the German. He did not have the best of the first

:29:17.:29:21.

round. But that is the best so far from Thomas Rohler. The lid is his.

:29:22.:29:38.

The European indoor champion got his world season off to a decent start

:29:39.:29:42.

in Eugene, equalling his personal best in a world-class field. Rome

:29:43.:29:47.

should prove just as tough a test as he lines up against the world record

:29:48.:29:53.

holder and the current and former world champions, all good

:29:54.:29:55.

preparations for an assault on the medals in London. So on the track,

:29:56.:30:04.

the men's 110 metre hurdles. It is a great field here.

:30:05.:30:19.

hurdles Now, Andrew Pozzi of Great Britainment only made the semi in

:30:20.:30:25.

Rio and huge disappointment for him and has massive ambition to do well

:30:26.:30:37.

in the World Championships. The silver-medallist from Rio has

:30:38.:30:39.

been up and down this year. Aries Merritt, 13.12 in Eugene.

:30:40.:30:55.

Fastest since he had his operation, a kidney transplant in 2015. A great

:30:56.:31:06.

story that still. Pozzi gets an excellent start. Merritt. Merritt

:31:07.:31:17.

hangs on! Not only hangs on, moves away at the end. 13.15. Well, I said

:31:18.:31:24.

the story just gets better and better. Well, it's a great story,

:31:25.:31:29.

but you have to carry on commending him. I thought Andy Pozzi twitched

:31:30.:31:43.

badly. You can see Merritt hanging on there. Pozzi, I don't think it

:31:44.:31:49.

was loss of concentration. He lost that concentration hard. That

:31:50.:31:54.

affected him badliment Pozzi third. Second from the top as you're

:31:55.:32:05.

looking at those four. A perfect dip from Aries Merritt. Well, Shubenkov

:32:06.:32:12.

is short of competition. I feel sorry for the fella. He's battling

:32:13.:32:17.

his way back and that was a strong run for him, a third.

:32:18.:32:34.

Stefanidi mansion to get a bit of stickiness on that bar.

:32:35.:32:48.

A grimace from Stefanidi. When you're competing everything goes

:32:49.:32:55.

right for you, but she has the aura of winning and winning. She has the

:32:56.:33:02.

confidence. The others as well then might buckle a little bit behind.

:33:03.:33:08.

Limb prick bronze-medallist, the youngster from New Zealand.

:33:09.:33:18.

McCartney has been at this stage of her career and keeps getting

:33:19.:33:21.

personal bests. But not tonight though, but she will continue to

:33:22.:33:24.

improve. It's still good enough for third place tonight.

:33:25.:33:35.

And Silva now in this pole vault. Third time failure at 4.85, but 4.75

:33:36.:33:42.

gives her a second place on the night. Stefanidi cleared 4.85 as she

:33:43.:33:49.

has every height. Stefanidi is having the bar moved up according to

:33:50.:33:53.

our computers here to 5.07. That would be a new world record. The

:33:54.:34:04.

world indoor champion was fifth in Rio and has a new coach.

:34:05.:34:21.

A slow championship race, 4.33 she was bind the Polish athlete. There

:34:22.:34:39.

there is Cichocka. She is strong. Arafi has got good speed. Tsegay has

:34:40.:34:47.

good strength and recently broke two minutes for 800 metres can you

:34:48.:34:50.

believe? A big field. 18 starters in the

:34:51.:34:56.

women's 1500 metres. The fastest time was in Shanghai a

:34:57.:35:15.

month or so back. Are they going with the pacemaker here?

:35:16.:35:28.

Well, Tim, one athlete got herself slotted in behind the pacemaker. I'm

:35:29.:35:39.

really interested to see the tall leky German. A massive talent. When

:35:40.:35:43.

you start adding this to her cross-country and the strength she

:35:44.:35:48.

has in long-distance. Watch her. Hassan is after it. Well, they come

:35:49.:35:53.

round towards 400 metres and the field seem to be going with this

:35:54.:35:57.

one. The pace is pretty good. The majority of the field have gone

:35:58.:36:03.

through in 64.5, 65 seconds. They're up for this one. Perfect conditions.

:36:04.:36:07.

Hassan in second place. I don't know if she has urged the Romanian out in

:36:08.:36:12.

front to accelerate, but it seems like there has been an acceleration

:36:13.:36:15.

and the German has slotted into third. Hassan gets clipped from

:36:16.:36:24.

behind. She is having a word with Tsegay behind her. The pacemaker

:36:25.:36:31.

just needs to keep it clipping along here as they come towards two laps

:36:32.:36:35.

to go, but the field is stretched out, this big field, because the

:36:36.:36:39.

tempo upfront has remained healthy and they come through below us with

:36:40.:36:53.

two lapse to run and below 1.51. Look at Konstanze Klosterhalfen. She

:36:54.:36:57.

is thinking about going past. I don't think Hassan will mind. Look

:36:58.:37:01.

at there, the German knows what she doesn't have is natural pace, Tim,

:37:02.:37:04.

but she has got such good strength and she is attacking saouf saouf.

:37:05.:37:21.

Hassan. Well, there is no fat on her. The German with 550 metres to

:37:22.:37:26.

run. Really testing this field now with this surge. She went past the

:37:27.:37:32.

pacemaker. Hasson on her shoulder who has got real strength too

:37:33.:37:38.

challenges the German too. The surge is taking them clear. Sado is in

:37:39.:37:45.

fourth place. It is Hassan leading, 2.55 at the bell. This is going to

:37:46.:37:52.

be quick. Konstanze Klosterhalfen in second place. There is a gap back to

:37:53.:37:56.

fifth place, but Hassan here, running the perfect race to drag

:37:57.:38:01.

Konstanze Klosterhalfen the German to a quick time. Konstanze

:38:02.:38:07.

Klosterhalfen is running a massive race. She could run under four

:38:08.:38:11.

minutes. That would be a brilliant performance. Look at Hassan, strong

:38:12.:38:15.

can have didn't and kicks away. She has got this one in the bag. It is a

:38:16.:38:20.

question of how fast. Konstanze Klosterhalfen has lost a lot of

:38:21.:38:26.

ground. She needs to concentrate here and keep the knees up. Hassan

:38:27.:38:32.

does it. She has that awkward round-shouldered style, but what a

:38:33.:38:36.

run from her. The gap is 15 metres. Watch the clock. This is going to be

:38:37.:38:41.

quick. Konstanze Klosterhalfen is hanging on, they are all struggling,

:38:42.:38:45.

but Hassan is in a class of her own. Watch the time, this is quick. My

:38:46.:38:50.

word, in second place coming through was Winny Chebet. I said she was one

:38:51.:38:55.

to watch. Goodness me, second in the world junior 800 a few years ago,

:38:56.:39:00.

Winny Chebet, but she was a distant second despite the quality of her

:39:01.:39:10.

run because the real quality came from the Dutchwoman, Sifan Hassan.

:39:11.:39:16.

It was the way in which Konstanze Klosterhalfen is not frightened of

:39:17.:39:20.

anyone that goes after it. Her best distance might be the 5,000 and

:39:21.:39:25.

maybe even longer because she has got such good pedigree, but under

:39:26.:39:38.

four minutes for the German and for Jebet.

:39:39.:39:49.

Conseslus Kipruto was more than good enough tonight. That's a meeting

:39:50.:39:59.

record. A world lead. 3.56.22. Improving substantially. The women

:40:00.:40:06.

owes pole vault is going on and they are crossing the javelin runway. So

:40:07.:40:11.

they are having to wait for their attempt. There is the lead. It maybe

:40:12.:40:29.

a metre or so beyond that. So the Olympic champion, getting to grips

:40:30.:40:35.

with conditions here and that will extend his lead in the third round.

:40:36.:40:47.

87, 89. This is Stefanidi. Could this be a world record? No, but she

:40:48.:40:52.

had a go. And remains world number one and remains on top in terms of

:40:53.:40:57.

world rankings and indeed, winning competitions. Stefanidi winning

:40:58.:41:02.

again tonight with a world leading 4.85 in the women's pole vault.

:41:03.:41:06.

Attempting the world record. She has got a stretch to get there yet for

:41:07.:41:10.

me. Well, she knows what she is up against. It gives her a prospective

:41:11.:41:14.

on what a world record really means. A-beautiful clearance at 1.96 at the

:41:15.:41:30.

first time of asking and boy, was she clear. There is clearly a great

:41:31.:41:33.

deal more to come. She's making it look easy and making herself look

:41:34.:41:37.

very much like an athlete who should be on top of the world rankings with

:41:38.:41:42.

2.03 from Eugene a couple of weeks back.

:41:43.:42:00.

Levchenko the only one to go clear. The third attempt for her. Clutch

:42:01.:42:07.

jump. It was a pretty good clearance in the end, look at it. Yes, very

:42:08.:42:17.

nice indeed. What can the London 2012 champion

:42:18.:42:23.

do? That's big. That has put the cat amongst the pigeons. I don't think

:42:24.:42:27.

it's the lead, but that's from Walcott, that's a fabulous throw.

:42:28.:42:39.

That is beyond 86 metres. The women's 100 metres.

:42:40.:42:43.

Henry in decent form. For Schippers, it wasn't the

:42:44.:43:02.

Olympics she wanted. Still performing well. Schippers is only

:43:03.:43:09.

24. This year, 10.95 back in April in the States where she prepared for

:43:10.:43:11.

the start of this season. Michelle-Lee Ahye Managing to juggle

:43:12.:43:31.

long jump and the 100 metres. Williams right over in lane two. It

:43:32.:43:37.

is Schippers. It will be Schippers just. Schippers gets it. And just

:43:38.:43:46.

outside, we will wait to see if that gets taken down. Under 11 seconds.

:43:47.:43:55.

The clock stops. In fact Tim, it has been taken to 10.99. It was an OK

:43:56.:44:00.

start. I wouldn't say it was a great start. She had two good starters

:44:01.:44:05.

next to her, but it was Williams who got out so quick over in lane two,

:44:06.:44:10.

but then the real race got going in the medal lanes. Good scrap, wasn't

:44:11.:44:17.

it, between Schippers and Ta Lou. Well, she is a big powerful athlete,

:44:18.:44:24.

Schippers. The 200 is her best event. The start isn't her best. All

:44:25.:44:31.

credit to Ta Lou. She hung on to her. Stayed with her almost stride

:44:32.:44:35.

for stride the hole way down the straight. Just lost out on the final

:44:36.:44:39.

run in and the strength of Schippers taking her clear. A good run from

:44:40.:44:46.

Ahye too. 10.99. Schippers was one of three athletes under 11 seconds

:44:47.:44:51.

this year and she confirms that form with another very, very solid run. A

:44:52.:44:58.

good race that. A really close race. Williams just went for one speed at

:44:59.:45:03.

#30e metres to another at 80, 90, but she did hang on to fifth place,

:45:04.:45:09.

but as Tim was saying, Schippers once more under 11 seconds. T Lou

:45:10.:45:15.

just outside at 11.03. This is the second attempt at two

:45:16.:45:34.

metres. Not giving anything away emotionally, she is staying very

:45:35.:45:37.

detached and focus. That is the first smile we have seen through the

:45:38.:45:44.

evening, frankly. Now the men's javelin. He has had a

:45:45.:45:49.

really poor night. He has been weighed down so far, but that is

:45:50.:46:00.

huge! Well, he has done it again. He is taking the challenge to Thomas

:46:01.:46:07.

Rohler, his team-mate. He had no throw in the fourth round and in the

:46:08.:46:13.

fifth round produces a huge throat. That will take the lead. Goodness

:46:14.:46:17.

me, where did that come from? It takes the lead. This is a strong

:46:18.:46:30.

field. Filippo Tortu of Italy is the world junior silver-medallist. A big

:46:31.:46:42.

talent. But he could struggle against this company, particularly

:46:43.:46:47.

against Andre de Grasse, the Olympic silver-medallist. Just 22 years of

:46:48.:46:53.

age. Only fifth in Doha and then forth in Eugene. Struggling a bit

:46:54.:47:00.

with form perhaps. There is Christophe Lemaitre. 26 years old.

:47:01.:47:11.

He took the bronze in Rio. And very even start initially. Christophe

:47:12.:47:18.

Lemaitre struggled on the band a little bit. Andre de Grasse changes

:47:19.:47:26.

gear and moves away. He is the smallest of all of them, but look at

:47:27.:47:32.

that winning margin. That is the Andre de Grasse we remember from

:47:33.:47:39.

2016. He is finding his racing legs. A class apart. He did all his

:47:40.:47:55.

running from the 90 metres point. That is a three-metre winning margin

:47:56.:48:05.

from Andre de Grasse. Filippo Tortu is getting a big roar from the crowd

:48:06.:48:08.

in the stadium. He finished fourth, a season's record for him and a

:48:09.:48:17.

personal best. A great performance. Look at him out there in lane seven

:48:18.:48:21.

and he was with them coming off the bed. But then you see Andre de

:48:22.:48:26.

Grasse, not changing gear, but maintaining good form. Christophe

:48:27.:48:32.

Lemaitre just sneaks second place. Andre de Grasse is a lovely runner,

:48:33.:48:38.

very relaxed. As far as we know Usain Bolt will not run the 200

:48:39.:48:42.

metres in London and that leaves this event wide open, a really

:48:43.:48:47.

exciting event. This man has the talent to win it, but does he have

:48:48.:48:51.

the mental fortitude and strength to believe he can go on to become world

:48:52.:49:01.

champion? Genzebe Dibaba came up short in her attempt at the 5000

:49:02.:49:07.

metres world record in Eugene and she has not really impressed so far

:49:08.:49:12.

this season. Kenya's Helen Obiri set a lifetime's best over the distance

:49:13.:49:18.

last month. She should provide a tough test for Genzebe Dibaba.

:49:19.:49:24.

Perhaps they could get closer to the world record held by Genzebe

:49:25.:49:31.

Dibaba's sister, Tirunesh Dibaba. It is a tall order at any time. But

:49:32.:49:37.

I suppose if anyone who has got the pedigree to go after it, it is

:49:38.:49:43.

Genzebe Dibaba. The world record is held by Tirunesh Dibaba. That is the

:49:44.:49:51.

full line-up. The big challenge will come from Helen Obiri. There are

:49:52.:49:55.

plenty of good athletes in here. We will probably end up with two races

:49:56.:49:59.

because the pace they have asked for is very quick. Stephanie Twell and

:50:00.:50:07.

Eilish McColgan are going for Great Britain. Consternation at the hotel

:50:08.:50:12.

as to what was being asked for pace wise. The idea is to go out hard and

:50:13.:50:21.

then try and hang on. I am not sure that is the best way to attack this

:50:22.:50:27.

fast time. The problem they have got is to go out as hard as they want to

:50:28.:50:32.

go out and you have to find some good pacemakers and I am not

:50:33.:50:36.

convinced we have got good enough quality pacemakers here tonight. The

:50:37.:50:43.

young athlete who has been asked to do it has a personal best of nine

:50:44.:50:47.

minutes, so you get the idea of the kind of task that will face the

:50:48.:50:53.

pacemakers. We'll Genzebe Dibaba take it on herself? I would think

:50:54.:51:03.

probably not. We will wait and see. We have got two races going on.

:51:04.:51:09.

There is a group of athletes, with the European athletes like Aileen

:51:10.:51:14.

McColgan and Stephanie Twell and they are so detached. There are a

:51:15.:51:21.

few stragglers and then 130 metres behind this pace, and it is a faster

:51:22.:51:28.

pace. I have said that this athlete is not good enough and Genzebe

:51:29.:51:35.

Dibaba has, early enough, decided to have a go. Hats off to her. It is a

:51:36.:51:42.

risky strategy. If she is not in shape to run very fast and run away

:51:43.:51:45.

from the rest of them, she will pay for this because it will be a long

:51:46.:51:53.

run in front for Genzebe Dibaba. Back in this high jump competition.

:51:54.:51:57.

It ends in failure as it does so often in the vertical jumps. One of

:51:58.:52:03.

the great ironies of those disciplines. But what an evening it

:52:04.:52:07.

has been for the Russian jumping here. Neutral athlete, it was

:52:08.:52:22.

comfortable win. This is slowing and slowing. That second 1000 metres

:52:23.:52:30.

when she decided to pick it up and they were already five seconds down

:52:31.:52:34.

on the pace. To have to run this far on your own out in front is a tough

:52:35.:52:41.

ask. She has got Agnes Tirop for company as well. This is not what

:52:42.:52:52.

was billed. But I am just curious, Tim. If you say you are going to go

:52:53.:52:58.

out that hard, you have got to find the pacemaker. She is slowing so

:52:59.:53:02.

much that Helen Obiri goes, enough is enough, I came here to run fast.

:53:03.:53:09.

I am off. Away she goes and suddenly Genzebe Dibaba is in fourth place.

:53:10.:53:15.

They have got five laps to run. Funnily enough, the world record at

:53:16.:53:23.

three kilometres it was eight point 38. But Tirunesh Dibaba, her elder

:53:24.:53:29.

sister, finishes like an absolute train. We are breaking off for the

:53:30.:53:39.

javelin. Thomas Rohler, and his final opportunity. He has hit it!

:53:40.:53:49.

That is fabulous competitive instincts. He knew he needed a

:53:50.:53:55.

bigger effort. So often you get the big effort in the first round or the

:53:56.:54:01.

last round. You know it is the last chance saloon. Thomas Rohler, it is

:54:02.:54:14.

a monstrous effort. It is in neutral air, he is not getting any help on

:54:15.:54:24.

this one, muggy evening. Helen Obiri is really stepping up here tonight.

:54:25.:54:29.

The Olympic silver-medallist has been in great form over the last two

:54:30.:54:35.

years in particular. Her personal best is 14 point two two. She has

:54:36.:54:44.

got an 85-metre lead. She is going to take the bell Inn around 13.13.

:54:45.:54:53.

She needs a 69 last lap. 68 would get her personal best. She is now

:54:54.:55:01.

lapping athletes. 12 are dropping out. Letesenbet Giday is getting

:55:02.:55:09.

into the grid behind. The crowd are rising to her. She looks quite

:55:10.:55:15.

supreme, she has destroyed Genzebe Dibaba. She is lapping good

:55:16.:55:22.

athletes, Helen Obiri. It will be a mighty quick time. It is the manner

:55:23.:55:27.

of the performance that has been special. She is lapping athletes and

:55:28.:55:37.

is lifting this again. Only four athletes have ever run below 14

:55:38.:55:45.

point 20. Heading for the quickest ever 5000 metres and sprinting away.

:55:46.:55:50.

She is watching the clock and is going to win the race. Look at the

:55:51.:56:00.

time. A huge performance from Helen Obiri. Great running from her. I can

:56:01.:56:05.

tell you that Genzebe Dibaba is pretty much jogging and being passed

:56:06.:56:09.

by athletes in the home straight. A Kenyan record. Only three Ethiopians

:56:10.:56:24.

have run quicker. Helen Obiri with a superb run. Agnes Tirop took the

:56:25.:56:30.

second place. The youngster Letesenbet Giday got into third.

:56:31.:56:36.

What a big effort from her as well. Whatever the hype about Genzebe

:56:37.:56:42.

Dibaba, it is hype at the moment. Helen Obiri, running well, running

:56:43.:56:46.

strong, running confident and rewarded with a huge performance.

:56:47.:56:53.

Absolutely. She really did find something in the last lap, still

:56:54.:56:58.

something in the tank for the final circuit of the track. Look at her

:56:59.:57:03.

with her head rocking from side to side, trying desperately to get

:57:04.:57:17.

under 14 stop 20. I have always enjoyed watching her run. A great

:57:18.:57:23.

athlete. Now she is running better than ever. A new Kenyan record for

:57:24.:57:28.

Helen Obiri. A great performance from her. Agnes Tirop ran well to

:57:29.:57:38.

get second place. There were some excellent early-season performances

:57:39.:57:43.

tonight with Helen Obiri and Sifan Hassan and Thomas Rohler. But for

:57:44.:57:48.

most of the Brits it was a disappointing night. But Singin do

:57:49.:58:00.

Pujara got victory against a very good field. The time was less

:58:01.:58:08.

important than the win. CJ could not have given himself a better

:58:09.:58:12.

confidence boost. The athletics action is coming thick and fast on

:58:13.:58:16.

the BBC. This weekend we have two Diamond League meetings to bring

:58:17.:58:20.

you. On Saturday we will have highlights from Oslo. Then it is

:58:21.:58:26.

Stockholm on Sunday night, or next Monday lunchtime on BBC Two. And

:58:27.:58:30.

there is more athletics the following weekend with the European

:58:31.:58:35.

team Championships. Catch a live coverage all weekend on the red

:58:36.:58:40.

button, online and on connected TV. Later tonight we have got live rugby

:58:41.:58:44.

union. That is followed by cricket highlights with a must win match for

:58:45.:58:53.

Australia in the ICC champions Trophy. We will be back with plenty

:58:54.:58:57.

more athletics next week. Until then, goodbye.
