Welcome to the Olympic Stadium in Rome for our first Diamond League

:00:45.:00:51.

meeting on BBC 3 this summer. Denise Lewis is with me trackside.

:00:52.:01:01.

There are things always kick off very quickly in these events.

:01:02.:01:04.

Denise Lewis is with me trackside. There are things always kick off

:01:05.:01:08.

very quickly in these events. It's a summer which includes

:01:09.:01:10.

the European Championships and the Commonwealth Games, and

:01:11.:01:13.

our first race features an athlete who could be one of the stars

:01:14.:01:17.

in Glasgow come the end of July. Scotland's Eilidh Child goes here

:01:18.:01:22.

in the 400 hurdles against former world champion

:01:23.:01:25.

Lashinda Demus, and Kaliese Spencer, who ran the fast time in the world

:01:26.:01:29.

this year on Saturday in Eugene. Let's join our commentary team.

:01:30.:01:44.

The conditions are absolutely perfect. A very still Olympic

:01:45.:01:52.

Stadium. This will be a real opportunity for The Times to come

:01:53.:01:56.

down a little bit. It has not been very impressive so far this season.

:01:57.:02:04.

Rosolova, European indoor champion in 2011. Silver medal in the

:02:05.:02:11.

European 400 metres hurdles in 2012. Tracey from Jamaica, 21. Fifth in

:02:12.:02:23.

the World Junior Championships. Titimets from Ukraine. Fourth in the

:02:24.:02:29.

world Championships in 2013. Spencer from Jamaica, the winner in Eugene.

:02:30.:02:37.

Tiffany Williams of America. Eilidh Child of Great Britain. Moline of

:02:38.:02:42.

the United States and Pedroso of Italy. Stoddart of Jamaica is in

:02:43.:02:45.

lane eight. The calm conditions should mean that

:02:46.:03:08.

we have got some reasonable times. Not much in it at all as we go into

:03:09.:03:13.

the first bend. Nobody really making an impact as they go down the back

:03:14.:03:19.

straight. Child going quite well. Tiffany Williams is inside her.

:03:20.:03:28.

Child going very strongly indeed. Williams inside her. Spencer yet to

:03:29.:03:39.

emerge from the fray. Spencer now beginning to make some headway on

:03:40.:03:45.

the inside. The Jamaican stuttering to that horrible. Really had to work

:03:46.:03:49.

very hard. Moline going well into second place. Eilidh Child in third.

:03:50.:03:55.

Spencer's second 100 was really impressive. That is the world leader

:03:56.:04:01.

time. I said the conditions were good and they are. It is a good race

:04:02.:04:07.

-- it was a good race. Spencer ran a very even pace. Not really with it

:04:08.:04:14.

until the final stages and when she finally started to attack of those

:04:15.:04:19.

hurdles, still a very good performance? Yes, really well

:04:20.:04:23.

judged. Steady through the first 200. Spencer is undoubtedly the best

:04:24.:04:39.

at the moment. That time goes to prove it. Good times behind her as

:04:40.:04:44.

well. One of the championships this year will be the Commonwealth Games

:04:45.:04:49.

and Spencer, as a Jamaican, will have her eyes on that. Child will be

:04:50.:04:55.

running for Scotland. These two getting to know each other. They

:04:56.:04:57.

really good performance from spencer. -- a really good

:04:58.:05:01.

performance. Eilidh Child has joined us. Coming

:05:02.:05:19.

along nicely? It was a solid race. It did not quite go as I planned but

:05:20.:05:20.

it is only my second hurdles race. It did not quite go as I planned but

:05:21.:05:29.

Coming along nicely. 54.82. Eight weeks tonight the final of the 400

:05:30.:05:33.

hurdles will be an Hampden Park at the Commonwealth Games. You are one

:05:34.:05:35.

of the big faces of the games. the Commonwealth Games. You are one

:05:36.:05:40.

track is laid. It looks the Commonwealth Games. You are one

:05:41.:05:43.

How excited are you? It is so exciting. I stay away from Scotland

:05:44.:05:49.

quite a lot because the pressure is building up. It will be an amazing

:05:50.:05:53.

games. Hopefully I can put on a good show. Is it fun, that kind of

:05:54.:06:02.

pressure? There were certain people whose faces were pulled out of

:06:03.:06:05.

London 2012. Is it fun being that person? Yes, you have to see it as

:06:06.:06:12.

support. I have spoken to Jessica Ennis-Hill dieted and she -- about

:06:13.:06:20.

it and she just said to enjoy these moments. You have had quite a copper

:06:21.:06:28.

hands of indoor season. How have you managed to consolidate and change

:06:29.:06:32.

the training so you do peak at one of your biggest races? It is all

:06:33.:06:38.

down to Malcolm, my culture. It is in his hands. -- my coach. I just

:06:39.:06:48.

want to build on what I did last year and hopefully it works out

:06:49.:06:51.

again. Well done. Keep the progress of. That is what she wants, isn't

:06:52.:07:01.

it? Eight weeks to go. Still a lot of training and racing to be done? ,

:07:02.:07:09.

yes, we have seen in recent years, Eilidh has put a lot of work in. She

:07:10.:07:16.

is reaping the benefits of that. There is pressure. But you have to

:07:17.:07:21.

welcome it. You have to embrace it and use it. There is still a lot of

:07:22.:07:24.

work to be done between now and then. She could have been expecting

:07:25.:07:31.

one of her main protagonists to be Perri Shakes-Drayton, who has yet to

:07:32.:07:36.

get on the track, as far as we know. We hear maybe it will be the

:07:37.:07:41.

400 metres flat for her last -- this season. She has not raced since the

:07:42.:07:46.

World Championships. We do not expect to be in the Commonwealth

:07:47.:07:49.

Games in the 400 metres hurdles. That puts the focus very much on

:07:50.:07:54.

Eilidh? Its doors but as it does for every person competing for

:07:55.:07:57.

Scotland. They want to do well for their country. Eilidh has put

:07:58.:08:02.

herself in a great position. She understands what is expected. She is

:08:03.:08:06.

a grafter. She ran the perfect race there. I am very optimistic for her

:08:07.:08:12.

chances. A very exciting summer ahead for Eilidh Child.

:08:13.:08:15.

And this is what else we've got coming up between now

:08:16.:08:23.

and nine o?clock. The Brits take on the best

:08:24.:08:26.

in the Men's 100 metres, as Adam Gemili and Richard Kilty

:08:27.:08:30.

face Justin Gatlin - the fastest man in the world this year.

:08:31.:08:32.

Shelly-Anne Fraser-Pryce is indisputably the quickest woman

:08:33.:08:34.

on earth right now. She goes in the 100 metres.

:08:35.:08:38.

We've got a fantastic High Jump. We've got a fantastic High Jump.

:08:39.:08:48.

The top five in the world are here. Four men have gone over two metres,

:08:49.:08:51.

40 this year, and they're ALL competing here.

:08:52.:08:54.

And the one, two, three in the women's hurdles from the World

:08:55.:08:57.

Championships meet again tonight. It's Rollins versus Pearson

:08:58.:08:59.

versus Britain's Tiffany Porter. That women's 100 hurdles is

:09:00.:09:01.

at 7.35 UK time. We love to hear from you on social

:09:02.:09:39.

media. If you want to tweet any questions to Denise or just make a

:09:40.:09:43.

point about the athletics, get in touch. Let's talk a little bit about

:09:44.:09:48.

a race coming up at the end of the evening. The two Brits, there is

:09:49.:09:53.

quite an interesting dynamic developing in British sprinting.

:09:54.:09:56.

Richard Kilty and Alec -- Adam Gemili. He will be desperate to

:09:57.:10:05.

break ten seconds this season, warranty? Yes. Everything is

:10:06.:10:11.

pointing in the right direction. He has the capabilities but so does

:10:12.:10:15.

Richard. That is why it is such an exciting season for British

:10:16.:10:20.

sprinting. There have been few battles going on. A little bit of

:10:21.:10:28.

needle. Both at Loughborough. Awkward dynamic. Is it good? Does it

:10:29.:10:34.

spurred them on? Sprinters like a bit of angst. They need to keep

:10:35.:10:44.

pumped up. They are both mild-mannered people. Very nice. But

:10:45.:10:49.

at the end of the day these guys are going to be making up our four by

:10:50.:10:57.

one. They have run really well this season already. They have got bigger

:10:58.:11:06.

fish to fry than having a go at each other. The men's 1500 metres about

:11:07.:11:09.

to go off. Kenya's Abel Kiprop -

:11:10.:11:22.

the 2008 Olympic champion and reigning world champion.

:11:23.:11:42.

Makhloufi bounced back in Doha. This, most people suggest, is the

:11:43.:11:55.

man to beat tonight. Kiprop. Overturned a big loss from the man

:11:56.:12:01.

from Djibouti last Saturday. They have asked for a pace, 1.51.5 --

:12:02.:12:20.

1.51.100. They have got to be tired. You go to Joe Hart, the Bahamas,

:12:21.:12:25.

Eugene and now in Rome. It has to be tiring. -- Doha. This is a big

:12:26.:12:36.

field. If you want quality it is a very big field indeed. Away they go.

:12:37.:12:51.

It will be interesting to see if they go with the pace or not. They

:12:52.:12:59.

have started fairly sensibly. They are all right up there at the very

:13:00.:13:15.

beginning. Kiprop will be following Souleiman this time and seeing

:13:16.:13:20.

things -- how things pan out. Through the first 300 metres. 41.42.

:13:21.:13:30.

Quick enough. The principles really got into the race straightaway. --

:13:31.:13:38.

principality. Kiprop just shadowing Souleiman. He had that magnificent

:13:39.:13:45.

mile race in Eugene. To run 3.47 is absolutely superb. It looks to me as

:13:46.:13:51.

though it is moving along a bit now. They are spreading wrote -- out. It

:13:52.:13:59.

was interesting, the first 400 metres, Kiprop just outside 47

:14:00.:14:03.

seconds. That would be slow compared to what they normally do. The

:14:04.:14:10.

pacemaker has decided to pick things up a little bit. Suleiman behind the

:14:11.:14:24.

two pacemakers. The pace is not that quick. They asked for 1.51. It has

:14:25.:14:32.

been well of that. There are some tired legs out there today.

:14:33.:14:38.

Souleiman and Kiprop are the main leaders. Now they start to stretch

:14:39.:14:49.

it out a little bit. Certainly the third lap is absolutely significant

:14:50.:14:52.

in this race. Souleiman just hanging on. Kiprop is behind him. While Tay

:14:53.:15:03.

is in that leading group as well. -- while Tay.

:15:04.:15:12.

and then the race will really get under way.

:15:13.:15:26.

Silas Kiplagat can be very dangerous in the sprint finish. Now Souleiman

:15:27.:15:36.

down the back straight and Silas Kiplagat manages to respond. Silas

:15:37.:15:45.

Kiplagat will wait for the others to move out. Let's see what he can do

:15:46.:15:55.

here. They all still pretty close. Asbel Kiprop will be hoping he can

:15:56.:15:59.

overturn what happened in Eugene the other week. The gap opens up for

:16:00.:16:04.

Kiplagat to come through and this time it is going to be Kiplagat. It

:16:05.:16:10.

is going to be a pretty fast last lap. 3.30.45. Well, well, well.

:16:11.:16:20.

Souleiman, settling for second this time. Kiplagat was second to kick in

:16:21.:16:27.

Doha and second to Souleiman in Eugene and it is his night tonight

:16:28.:16:32.

in Rome. He waited and waited. A different type of race. A good solid

:16:33.:16:36.

race initially and then it started to wind up. Some tired legs, I am

:16:37.:16:43.

sure. Kiplagat coming through the best and rewarded. Souleiman 3.31. A

:16:44.:16:54.

wonderful piece of judgement by Kiplagat of Kenya to come past the

:16:55.:16:58.

man who had really taken all of the power of the pressure of the pace.

:16:59.:17:03.

And in the end, he suffered a bit because of it, I reckon. Kiplagat

:17:04.:17:09.

coming through very strongly. Asbel Kiprop, the champion in 2008, won in

:17:10.:17:16.

Doha, and this speeded up dramatically after the relatively

:17:17.:17:22.

slow start to the race. 3.30.45 is the unofficial time.

:17:23.:17:29.

Steve Cram said it in commentary. Some tired legs. There was a race in

:17:30.:17:39.

Eugene last weekend and Asbel Kiprop was in that. He has been a stalwart

:17:40.:17:45.

all season but he has raced already. In a fantastic race in Doha he went

:17:46.:17:50.

under 3.30 but maybe the running is showing in his legs. Absolutely. You

:17:51.:17:54.

saw him crossing the line and he looks very dejected. Very tired. You

:17:55.:17:58.

don't often see him blowing at the end of a race and he really does

:17:59.:18:03.

look tired. That defeat was crushing and he did everything in that race.

:18:04.:18:08.

He was in the right position but coming down the home straight he had

:18:09.:18:13.

nothing to respond to. A flurry of stories in the press in the early

:18:14.:18:16.

part of the week saying the Kenyans wanted the athletes back for their

:18:17.:18:19.

trials and the Commonwealth Games and they were not going to raise

:18:20.:18:22.

here tonight, but of course this is where they are because this is where

:18:23.:18:27.

they make their cash. I suppose it is about gauging how you do that

:18:28.:18:32.

throughout the season. You can race too much too early and the

:18:33.:18:35.

Commonwealth Games will be big for him. He was the man in Monaco who

:18:36.:18:40.

won the fabulous race when Mo Farah got his British record in the 1500

:18:41.:18:45.

metres. Perhaps Mo Farah will be in that 1500 metres in Glasgow. We

:18:46.:18:50.

don't know yet. I hope so. Going back to the race itself, I think for

:18:51.:18:54.

the athletes on the Commonwealth Games, selection is such a big part

:18:55.:18:57.

of it. A lot of athletes are facing this, that they have to make sure

:18:58.:19:01.

that they get their selection, but at the same time make sure that they

:19:02.:19:05.

are sharp enough and keep the federations happy. It is a very hot

:19:06.:19:10.

Thai job competition going on behind us. The early stages. -- high jump

:19:11.:19:18.

of edition. We don't always choose the pictures you see, so we cannot

:19:19.:19:23.

always determine when you will see the field events. But three men have

:19:24.:19:27.

already jumped over 2.42 this season. The world record of 2.45 was

:19:28.:19:35.

set three years ago and is ever closer. Maybe with the field so

:19:36.:19:41.

strong and the conditions so the effect, it could be the night. --

:19:42.:19:49.

the conditions so perfect. Psychologically for the athletes,

:19:50.:19:53.

the ones that have been over 2.40, they feel it. It used to be a

:19:54.:19:58.

target. Now there is a good crop of athletes flying over we will see and

:19:59.:20:08.

no doubt you will see plenty of that high jump competition as they get

:20:09.:20:13.

closer to the 2.40 mark. Next up on the track, they are getting

:20:14.:20:15.

themselves ready for the men's 400 metres. LaShawn Merrit is featured

:20:16.:20:22.

in this. He lost last weekend in Eugene against his great rival,

:20:23.:20:26.

Kirani James. LaShawn Merrit is starting to come

:20:27.:20:38.

onto the shoulder of James. Kirani James giving him a hard time! Can he

:20:39.:20:43.

get ahead? It is going right to the line! Just on the line. 43.98. Just

:20:44.:20:52.

outside the meeting record. It will be the quickest in the world this

:20:53.:20:56.

year. What a great race from these two. Absolutely superb. A massive

:20:57.:21:05.

rivalry has developed between Kirani James and LaShawn Merrit. It is

:21:06.:21:09.

fantastic when we get a great head to head in athletics. Kirani James

:21:10.:21:13.

is not here tonight. Some people find it difficult to watch LaShawn

:21:14.:21:16.

Merrit because of his earlier drugs ban. How do you feel? We see a time

:21:17.:21:29.

and again. Athletes that have been banned seem to be welcomed by the

:21:30.:21:33.

athletics fraternity. They have served their time and they are back.

:21:34.:21:37.

It is part of the sport and it is not just in athletics that it

:21:38.:21:41.

happens. The rivalry is great, for me. James, the young of the two,

:21:42.:21:45.

even though he is not here tonight, I feel that event will really take

:21:46.:21:52.

off. He will take it to new heights. And perhaps challenge the Michael

:21:53.:21:56.

Johnson record one day. Maybe! I hope we are in the studio with him

:21:57.:22:02.

when that happens! It is a great field but it may not have the great

:22:03.:22:06.

head to head between Merritt and James. Nigel Levine is that from

:22:07.:22:11.

Great Britain as well. They are getting ready hopefully for a very

:22:12.:22:17.

quick one lap of the track. Steve Cram and Stuart Storey.

:22:18.:22:25.

Santos is the Olympic silver medallist from London, bronze

:22:26.:22:30.

medallist last year. He has had some wonderful races. Only a youngster.

:22:31.:22:36.

And LaShawn Merrit, two Olympic gold medals. Of course second in Eugene.

:22:37.:22:47.

43.97, just down on Kirani James. Youssef Masrahi has been proving

:22:48.:22:51.

himself to be pretty useful. And so has David Verburg. He has a best of

:22:52.:23:00.

44.77, as I said, and David Verburg has 45.03. Nigel Levine of Great

:23:01.:23:17.

Britain got two indoor silver medals. He has got the outside lane

:23:18.:23:22.

and he will be the man to recreate the challenge for the rest. He is

:23:23.:23:24.

the target. Merritt has gone off pretty quickly,

:23:25.:24:21.

already up on. He is leading at the moment. Santos has got a lot to do.

:24:22.:24:28.

Josh Mannes of the United States is running pretty strongly in main two.

:24:29.:24:47.

-- Josh Mance in lane two. Here comes LaShawn Merrit of the United

:24:48.:24:50.

States, showing some class. He will take this. And second place is in

:24:51.:25:00.

lane six, Youssef Masrahi, coming through very strongly. It is not

:25:01.:25:05.

just that he has had a lot of 400 metre races. He has had some high

:25:06.:25:11.

quality 400 metre races. He have to run close to 44.5 to run these days.

:25:12.:25:17.

He ran steadily and then when he got to 300, he was in a position to

:25:18.:25:21.

attack and then he ran away from the field. He makes 44.48 look very

:25:22.:25:29.

easy. It is done in the last 70 metres. It is not that he is running

:25:30.:25:34.

quickly. He is maintaining a speed that the others cannot hold onto.

:25:35.:25:37.

Look at that very strong action. If he is not in the form of his life,

:25:38.:25:43.

he is very close to that. That race against Kirani James the other day

:25:44.:25:46.

it was classic and he did not want to lose it. He did but back to

:25:47.:25:54.

winning ways here tonight. Santos cannot get in between Merritt and

:25:55.:25:55.

James at the moment. A cannot get in between Merritt and

:25:56.:25:59.

others might come in as the season moves on. LaShawn Merrit showing his

:26:00.:26:07.

class, the only man in the field going under 45 seconds. Looking like

:26:08.:26:10.

it was relatively easy and comfortable. 44.48. Without Kirani

:26:11.:26:20.

James to put him on, he opened up a gap with the rest of the field. Yes,

:26:21.:26:25.

and a perfectly judged race. He goes out hard, which he tends to do, and

:26:26.:26:29.

he maintains his form through the line. The Americans have dominated

:26:30.:26:33.

this event for many years. They have the eight quickest times of all time

:26:34.:26:37.

and he is right up there and he is quite happy. Why is that? Other

:26:38.:26:42.

countries don't seem to be able to get close. Why do they have strength

:26:43.:26:47.

and depth over 400 metres in particular? Good coaching. They seem

:26:48.:26:51.

to embrace the event. The top eight times of all time. We had our own

:26:52.:27:00.

heritage, didn't we? We did. We have had a great tradition ourselves.

:27:01.:27:09.

Kirani James is sandwiched between the Americans. They have just

:27:10.:27:14.

embraced the event. Let's look ahead to an event coming up in the summer.

:27:15.:27:19.

Tyson Gay is making his comeback against Justin Gatlin. We taught

:27:20.:27:22.

them about LaShawn Merrit's brush with authorities and his drugs ban.

:27:23.:27:29.

-- we talked them. There has been a lot of talking about Tyson Gay

:27:30.:27:33.

coming back against a controversial drugs bigger. People have asked

:27:34.:27:38.

about the other guys in the race. Do they like it? The centre of

:27:39.:27:42.

attention will be on these guys for the wrong reasons. That race will

:27:43.:27:46.

take centre stage and it will be about those two. It will. The

:27:47.:27:51.

athletes know it and they have to put it to the back of their minds

:27:52.:27:55.

and get on with the job in hand. It is surprising that he has been

:27:56.:27:57.

allowed to come back quite so quickly. A year. Yes. I wonder what

:27:58.:28:05.

message it sends out to everybody else. He cooperated with the

:28:06.:28:10.

American drug authorities, which is why it is a year. Wilder has not

:28:11.:28:16.

said otherwise, a two-year ban would be the norm for the first offence.

:28:17.:28:20.

It seems that the rules have been manipulated. He must have given them

:28:21.:28:24.

valuable information. From the get go when he was exposed and he got

:28:25.:28:29.

caught, he put up his hands and said that somebody in his team had let

:28:30.:28:33.

him down. He has not try to deny it and he seems to have been

:28:34.:28:36.

cooperative. Does that make it right? It is for everyone to judge.

:28:37.:28:40.

He is back and we have to get over it but it will spoil the race, I

:28:41.:28:45.

think. Justin Gatlin is in Rome and he will be racing towards the end of

:28:46.:28:54.

the evening with two Brits, Adam Gemili and Richard Kilty. How is the

:28:55.:28:56.

high jump coming on? Early days... Just goes to show! A

:28:57.:29:10.

warm up for the best in the world. He looked like he was clear.

:29:11.:29:21.

Bohdan Bondarenko is also a 2.41 man. Such a tough cookie. Year and

:29:22.:29:34.

2.41 this year. He made no mistakes. -- 2.42 last year and 2.41 this

:29:35.:29:45.

year. Great power, creating that arch.

:29:46.:29:49.

There is a way to go in the high job just yet and we will keep you posted

:29:50.:29:53.

as the evening progresses. Next up is the women's 800 metres hurdles.

:29:54.:29:58.

We have gold and bronze from the Moscow World Champion ships last

:29:59.:30:10.

summer and what a race that was. Rollins is left sleeping. Tiffany

:30:11.:30:17.

Porter is there. Rollins storming through. Silver for Sally Pearson.

:30:18.:30:25.

Bransford Tiffany Porter. What a race. That's my bronze water. The

:30:26.:30:36.

news that we heard that before coming on it tonight was that Sally

:30:37.:30:39.

Pearson had to pull out at the very last moment. Pearson only got into

:30:40.:30:49.

Europe early in the week. Said he did not feel right after getting off

:30:50.:30:52.

the plane. Her body was not feeling good. People love in warm up. After

:30:53.:30:56.

the difficulty getting through to last summer, when she was injured,

:30:57.:31:04.

she didn't kind of completely connect, did she? We were all hoping

:31:05.:31:08.

after another good strong winter she will you back to her best. This may

:31:09.:31:15.

just be another hiccup. I think the Americans definitely ruffled

:31:16.:31:18.

feathers last year. Sally did run well at the despite the injuries.

:31:19.:31:26.

She was just pipped into silver at the championships. She would have

:31:27.:31:30.

been looking forward to a full winter of training? She would have

:31:31.:31:35.

been. It is a shame she is not here tonight. A mouthwatering prospect.

:31:36.:31:43.

It looked like a really strong line-up earlier on today. Yes,

:31:44.:31:48.

sure. And Ali, the World Indoor Championship is looking good.

:31:49.:31:54.

Pearson is one person who does not shirk competition. These girls tend

:31:55.:31:58.

to compete. They do not mind. They don't try to avoid each other. Still

:31:59.:32:04.

is a fantastic line-up. Tiffany Porter runs for Great Britain. She

:32:05.:32:09.

is gaining so much confidence from that bronze medal in Moscow.

:32:10.:32:14.

Absolutely. Their interviews, our demeanour, she seems to be a

:32:15.:32:19.

different athlete. -- her whole demeanour. Her technique has

:32:20.:32:24.

improved in the latter part of the race. A different Tiffany Porter. A

:32:25.:32:32.

stronger Tiffany Porter. Let's get track-side to Steve and Stewart.

:32:33.:32:52.

Harper-Nelson, the Olympic champion in 2008. Ali, was a champion this

:32:53.:33:07.

year. 7.8 doors, Shiva. That is pretty tough quarter. If you are

:33:08.:33:17.

well at the moment. -- Tiffany is running well at the moment Caravelli

:33:18.:33:24.

on the outside. What a shame that Sally Pearson is not able to

:33:25.:33:25.

compete. Very long hold indeed. Rollins

:33:26.:34:35.

getting away pretty well. Chased by Harper-Nelson. Harrison going well.

:34:36.:34:50.

Rollins may have got beaten by Harper-Nelson. It was very close. It

:34:51.:34:54.

was very close. It was a tough race. Right at the finish, Rollins had the

:34:55.:34:59.

dominant throughout the race, and it was a close A brilliant start from

:35:00.:35:11.

Rollins. It looked as if she had the win in the bag with you. Very tight

:35:12.:35:14.

on the line. Caravelli took a terrible. Harper-Nelson coming

:35:15.:35:26.

through. Harrison. Harper-Nelson. Many fans have wheezing and you are

:35:27.:35:33.

a -- how many times have we seen doing that in a major championship?

:35:34.:35:41.

They have given it to Rollins on the angle. That is not the a second stop

:35:42.:35:55.

Rollins from Harper-Nelson. Come on, she says! Come on, she says! , a

:35:56.:36:05.

Harper-Nelson Azi. You are a big jump in. He has been there. He was

:36:06.:36:10.

second in 12 Sally Pearson. This woman is difficult a given.

:36:11.:36:31.

You could not put a piece of paper between them. It was really

:36:32.:36:37.

difficult to decide on that for the finish. Is this a massive great.

:36:38.:37:02.

It's like things were going well. Is it one of the

:37:03.:37:04.

It's like things were going well. Is of the season, that you have let?

:37:05.:37:09.

Yes, we have that raises some fans. It is a question of improving. I

:37:10.:37:15.

want to go back to the drawing board and develop next time. I'm assuming

:37:16.:37:19.

the Commonwealth Games and European Championships at the big

:37:20.:37:24.

events for you summer. How difficult is it to make sure that you have the

:37:25.:37:30.

right time? That is the thing. I keep reminding myself of the big

:37:31.:37:34.

picture. It would be nice to perform well here. But I have championships

:37:35.:37:40.

this year to focus on. The picture. Thank you so much. You can get those

:37:41.:37:49.

races when things do not go to plan. You have a some athletes are

:37:50.:37:55.

constantly trying to look for that age. -- you have to remember the

:37:56.:38:02.

Tiffany has had to be evaluated. She has a. It's the way. It is about

:38:03.:38:11.

putting together. She knows she has to find a 10th, a tense, people with

:38:12.:38:28.

these girls. Life there is strength in depth That is why we love being

:38:29.:38:45.

at the US trials because we know the next generation is going to catapult

:38:46.:38:51.

from those type of races, where it is nip and tuck. A new name every

:38:52.:38:55.

season. They are all quick. They have the pedigree. They have got the

:38:56.:39:00.

speed. They have got a huge pool to choose from. Let's check on the

:39:01.:39:08.

men's high job. It is just behind us. -- high jump. This is Drouin in

:39:09.:39:21.

the high jump. He is said to go out into the lead on his own. He will be

:39:22.:39:26.

wanting to put some pressure on Bondarenko. He has only had one job

:39:27.:39:34.

so far. Drouin, unlike some of the others, had a failure. No, felt a --

:39:35.:40:01.

he was nowhere near that. This event has really been built up, and

:40:02.:40:07.

rightly so. All of the main contenders involved. This fellow is

:40:08.:40:16.

just a youngster, really, in terms of the event. But what a performer

:40:17.:40:22.

he is. He has got a good competitive brain. The 2.28 may cost him in

:40:23.:40:31.

terms of the final outcome. That was a very good clearance. He attacks

:40:32.:40:37.

the bar. He runs in very quickly. Superb arch. A very good clearance.

:40:38.:40:41.

It looks as though there is a lot more in the tank.

:40:42.:40:50.

So only three men over 2.31 at the moment. It is going a bit slowly,

:40:51.:40:55.

this world record attempt! All good things will come to those who wait.

:40:56.:41:01.

A chance to pose for a moment and talk about what was a really

:41:02.:41:04.

impressive performance from Katarina Thompson Johnson last week. She has

:41:05.:41:13.

been pushing the barriers back, doing better every season. With the

:41:14.:41:19.

Commonwealth games this season, potentially biggest competition, it

:41:20.:41:24.

is important to stamp her mark? Yes. A great gauge and how good her

:41:25.:41:30.

winter was. -- on how her winter was. To put it all together, and she

:41:31.:41:37.

still has room to improve, it's fantastic. More than 6000 points she

:41:38.:41:47.

amassed. That would have won her a gold medal in Moscow. We talked

:41:48.:41:52.

about as a prospect. It is amazing how much progress you can make in

:41:53.:41:57.

the habitat than over the winter. So exciting to see what she has got and

:41:58.:42:02.

how she has improved. Where is the biggest right,? Staying healthy. 23

:42:03.:42:13.

seconds for a heptathlete is outstanding running. She is being

:42:14.:42:17.

pushed on by a group of young athletes, also vying for position.

:42:18.:42:23.

She is in good shape. Looking good. A serious gold medal prospect. The

:42:24.:42:43.

women lining up for the 5000 metres. Dibaba has, the indoor season

:42:44.:42:50.

incredible form. She has not translated onto the track. She looks

:42:51.:42:57.

of of sorts. How does she keep producing these world records and

:42:58.:43:01.

annihilating the world record, not just by little margin? She is one to

:43:02.:43:11.

watch. She has got the pedigree. Ayana, the bronze medallist at the

:43:12.:43:17.

world Championships last season. This is one of the loaded line-ups

:43:18.:43:19.

of the night. Real quality and class. We should be a good race.

:43:20.:43:25.

Conditions are ideal for a pretty good time.

:43:26.:43:40.

If the father was the fifth and last --

:43:41.:43:56.

I'm not sure anybody will want to deal with that. If your pacemaker

:43:57.:44:04.

for a couple of laps, you the one everybody has off. It would be just

:44:05.:44:10.

a case of making sure you get the win tonight. I'm not sure we're

:44:11.:44:18.

going to see anything particularly quick. We may do in the second half

:44:19.:44:25.

of the race. Not much interest pacemaker. They are springing out a

:44:26.:44:33.

little bit. There is no sense of urgency. They are all Bunting. That

:44:34.:44:42.

gives you a clue that all of a clue that all pervasive off a little. --

:44:43.:44:51.

bunching. We would just break off from the race for a moment to fill a

:44:52.:44:59.

prostitute Kynard in the high jump. -- to go over to Kynard. Bohan

:45:00.:45:46.

Bondarenko is in the big names are playing he is a big, solid citizen.

:45:47.:45:53.

Now, Mutaz Barshim, what can you do? World indoor champion. 2.40 in

:45:54.:46:02.

Eugene last year. He is such a talent. He moved on so quickly. He

:46:03.:46:08.

is beginning to develop, and I say that because he is getting more

:46:09.:46:12.

consistent at these heights way above 2.30. But we will see. 2.34

:46:13.:46:19.

cleared brilliantly. That was absolutely superb. Cool, calm and

:46:20.:46:27.

collected. That look of relaxation on his face. His take-off position

:46:28.:46:33.

absolutely spot on. A wonderful arch to cross that bar. This young woman,

:46:34.:46:44.

the Cuban, Steve? Having a good night in terms of the competition.

:46:45.:46:52.

Only two have gone clear at 4.60. A second attempt at 4.70. Both passed

:46:53.:47:05.

at 4.65. I thought maybe they could have had three failures at 4.65 but

:47:06.:47:10.

the two have attempted this tide. Neither clear. She is dynamic. Not

:47:11.:47:18.

the tallest but she has muscles and she powers into it. A real contrast

:47:19.:47:36.

to the next person to vault. We will go back to this 5000 metres. The

:47:37.:47:43.

fact that she is still leading this means it has not been very fast.

:47:44.:47:55.

They are one minute outside the moment. When you think of the shape

:47:56.:48:05.

that Genzebe Dibaba was in, she is sitting at the back of the field,

:48:06.:48:09.

keeping an eye on things, seeing what is happening to her. Jo Pavey

:48:10.:48:13.

is now 40 years old and a mother. It is great to see her back. Looking

:48:14.:48:18.

forward to seeing her on the track. Julia Bleasdale is another one. And

:48:19.:48:23.

the Americans, Kim Conley and Molly Huddle. This is better for them.

:48:24.:48:28.

Right in the pace they would have been involved in. Maybe not to be

:48:29.:48:33.

expected so many people at this pace. Molly Huddle is closer to the

:48:34.:48:46.

front. Nadia Noujani is in the lead. She is dangerous and has got to be

:48:47.:48:54.

watched. If they are going to head for under 15 minutes, then they have

:48:55.:48:57.

to move things along and we can expect some fireworks over the next

:48:58.:49:04.

few laps from the likes of Genzebe Dibaba. Yes, the Doha situation was

:49:05.:49:09.

strange. Apparently she was not very well but after three indoor records

:49:10.:49:15.

and such power over a diverse range of distances, it was clear that she

:49:16.:49:27.

was odds on favourite. She has the armoury definitely of that

:49:28.:49:31.

magnificent family of Dibabas. To Ernesto Baba holds the record here.

:49:32.:49:59.

-- Tiranesh. He nearly sat upon the bar there!

:50:00.:50:05.

It was 2.56 for the second kilometre and now they are lapping at the sort

:50:06.:50:11.

of place you might have expected at the beginning. They are well capable

:50:12.:50:21.

of it. It is interesting now that Almaz Ayana is forcing things on.

:50:22.:50:27.

Just watching Mercy Cherono, happy to sit back. Molly Huddle in fourth

:50:28.:50:31.

place, realising that they gap is appearing with Almaz Ayana and

:50:32.:50:35.

Dibaba. Making sure the gap does not get too big too early. Jo Pavey

:50:36.:50:44.

looking as though she is working hard at the back of the lead group

:50:45.:50:46.

in these early stages. Almaz Ayana leads it, Dibaba in

:50:47.:51:02.

second. Then a gap. They might want to close it down very quickly. A

:51:03.:51:09.

good 1500 metres race as well. The men's triple jump. This is the man

:51:10.:51:17.

who did so well, Adams. Some sinister looks around the track!

:51:18.:51:25.

Adams just looking at his performance. He really does need to

:51:26.:51:34.

get in amongst this. Into a slight headwind, not .4, which is hardly

:51:35.:51:45.

anything. -- 0.4. That looked like a shortened approach. I wonder if he

:51:46.:51:48.

had some kind of injury because he did not look at all comfortable. The

:51:49.:52:02.

men's triple jump is continuing and Almaz Ayana is still at the front of

:52:03.:52:09.

the 5000 metres. The laps are coming down in duration, which has broken

:52:10.:52:15.

up the field. Quite a few athletes are beginning to struggle. Molly

:52:16.:52:22.

Huddle is in the next group. Behind Jo Pavey by some way. Now they are

:52:23.:52:32.

starting to move. Dibaba comfortable in second place. Mercy Cherono no

:52:33.:52:36.

why she has always been, pretty close. -- where she has. Another

:52:37.:52:53.

little gap appearing. Here Ayalew struggling in the distance. Almaz

:52:54.:53:01.

Ayana was the surprise package last year. She set a good personal best.

:53:02.:53:14.

And that 3000 personal best in Doha was nearly overlooked because of how

:53:15.:53:20.

well she ran. Just going back to the high jump. Ukhov, his third attempt.

:53:21.:53:31.

He had to get that and he didn't. He has had the same problem each time

:53:32.:53:36.

dropping onto the bar. The 2.40 man has gone out with a successful jump

:53:37.:53:44.

of 2.28. Not a good day at the office. Have another look. His

:53:45.:53:49.

approach is not quite right. He is just dropping down onto the bar.

:53:50.:53:52.

These heights should be fairly commonplace. That event was of

:53:53.:53:59.

course built up to be one of the highlights of the night but it is

:54:00.:54:03.

not proving to be the case at the moment, certainly not for Ukhov. Now

:54:04.:54:10.

Almaz Ayana is leading and a gap appears with Dibaba. The four best

:54:11.:54:14.

athlete in this field starting to pull away now. Ayana is pulling away

:54:15.:54:25.

a bit. Gaps have appeared but that will not be hurting Dibaba and Mercy

:54:26.:54:35.

Cherono too much. What sort of finish are we going to see from

:54:36.:54:41.

Dibaba tonight? If you can run 3.55 indoors, you must be full of

:54:42.:54:48.

confidence in the latter stages of races like this. But she has not

:54:49.:54:52.

carried that form into the start of the summer season. Will it be back

:54:53.:54:56.

to winning business for Dibaba tonight? Just over 1000 metres to

:54:57.:55:05.

go. The base has been very slow at the beginning and then it picked up

:55:06.:55:12.

in the middle. -- the pace. These four pulling well clear. Ayana just

:55:13.:55:21.

making sure the others are working. We just go back to the triple jump

:55:22.:55:31.

again. Martinez's second jump. He needs to find something. They are

:55:32.:55:33.

all finding it pretty tough. 16 years old. Unbelievable.

:55:34.:55:55.

looked better and it was better! That is a 17 metre jump, no

:55:56.:56:01.

question. The world youth champion. That was only last year and he is

:56:02.:56:07.

only 16. Well! Mature beyond his years, let's say that. Lovely first

:56:08.:56:12.

phase. Good control in the middle. At to work a little bit in the

:56:13.:56:17.

middle. But good form and momentum on the landing, which will certainly

:56:18.:56:30.

be the lead. It is. 17.07. Ayana must realise that if she cannot pick

:56:31.:56:33.

things up here then the inevitable will happen. It looks like a little

:56:34.:56:44.

bit of struggle for Jelagat Kibiwot. Dibaba is beginning to wind herself

:56:45.:56:48.

up for the moment when she will strike and making sure it is

:56:49.:56:52.

decisive when she does strike. That gap between her and the Kenyans will

:56:53.:56:57.

be one that is difficult to close on the last lap. Ayana is doing a

:56:58.:57:02.

brilliant job. Can she spring a surprise? It looks comfortable. 68

:57:03.:57:08.

for the penultimate lap. Is it going to be enough? Can it take the sting

:57:09.:57:14.

out of Dibaba? Realising the danger, she should have gone past 100 metres

:57:15.:57:17.

ago and with that gaps you will find it difficult to close. The two

:57:18.:57:25.

Ethiopians are trying to strike. Ayana hanging on to Dibaba. It is

:57:26.:57:31.

turning into two metres. The other Kenyans are disappearing. Nothing to

:57:32.:57:36.

offer. Dibaba does not have this yet. Ayana is very strong but to

:57:37.:57:38.

does not have the pace yet. Ayana is very strong but to

:57:39.:57:43.

up. She will keep maintaining. It will be a good win for Dibaba. Not

:57:44.:57:47.

as impressive as it might have been, not as impressive as in the winter

:57:48.:57:55.

for my money, but still a victory. Not interested in a superfast time

:57:56.:57:57.

but by Not interested in a superfast time

:57:58.:58:01.

performance. It will be outside 14.30. Dibaba wins it spot on 14.35.

:58:02.:58:11.

Ayana takes a well-deserved second after all that hard work. Jelagat

:58:12.:58:19.

Kibiwot takes third. The big races will come and the record attempts

:58:20.:58:24.

will come as well. It is looking hard and they are wincing a bit.

:58:25.:58:32.

Maybe a blister. That was an impressive enough last lap. Yes, an

:58:33.:58:36.

impressive second half of the race as well. She looked very

:58:37.:58:43.

comfortable. She did everything absolutely right, Hiwot Ayalew, but

:58:44.:58:47.

it was not enough. This gives us hope that perhaps that indoor talent

:58:48.:58:53.

will emerge on the track. And it is beginning to do so now.

:58:54.:59:00.

Dibaba gets her win on the track. And some of that indoor four might

:59:01.:59:08.

come to fruition now. It is a world leading time. It was not a very

:59:09.:59:14.

quick race but you can only beat what is around you. Absolutely. She

:59:15.:59:20.

just looks majestic when she runs. The effort does not show on her

:59:21.:59:24.

face. She just turns on the power and speed and she is gifted.

:59:25.:59:28.

Regardless of it being a long race, you still need to have that speed

:59:29.:59:33.

and she had it in abundance. Look at who she has beaten. Ayana, Mercy

:59:34.:59:40.

Cherono, Molly Huddle. A very strong field. Early days but she is sending

:59:41.:59:45.

out the right messages. Another Dibaba! What a rich heritage that

:59:46.:59:52.

family has got. These are the top stories from Rome so far?

:59:53.:00:21.

Harper-Nelson by one of its second place tired. LaShawn Merritt

:00:22.:00:27.

strolled to victory in the men's for the figures. Conrad Williams was a.

:00:28.:00:42.

, we have an's 200 metres. Just before, it is the 100 metres. Justin

:00:43.:00:49.

Gatlin is the big man. This made here particularly loves. Usain Bolt

:00:50.:00:55.

has not run yet so far this season. Adam Gemili was have -- will have

:00:56.:01:00.

his eyes Gatlin. He really put his name amongst the big boys last

:01:01.:01:05.

season. He competed so well in Moscow. He has had a really good

:01:06.:01:10.

season so far. What has happened in the high jump? We think that was

:01:11.:01:18.

2.41. We are heading towards the 2.45 world record. You will see that

:01:19.:01:23.

in a moment. I met Adam Gemili earlier this year to see just how he

:01:24.:01:27.

combines his arduous studies at the University of East London, with even

:01:28.:01:32.

more arduous training in an attempt to be one of the best in the world.

:01:33.:01:42.

At the British trials in 2012 when I made the team, I was really happy. I

:01:43.:01:47.

woke up the next day and that was it for me. It was not a big deal. I did

:01:48.:01:52.

not realise the scale of it. How hard people that trained. Do you

:01:53.:01:59.

feel guilty now? ! A little bit! When I am on the start line and you

:02:00.:02:04.

see me smiling, especially at 2012, it was just because I was enjoying

:02:05.:02:09.

myself. I had no expectations. I was just there to have fun. I try to do

:02:10.:02:14.

that now. I am not the type of person to be angry and aggressive.

:02:15.:02:19.

I'm not that kind of person. I try to enjoy myself. Usain Bolt has fun.

:02:20.:02:25.

The more relaxed you are, the better it is. What ad has got which a lot

:02:26.:02:30.

of other British sprinters do not have is he has come into the sport

:02:31.:02:35.

very raw. He has no fear. He does not know the bad side. A lot of

:02:36.:02:40.

other sprinters we have had, and a lot of sprinters who have won the

:02:41.:02:44.

World Junior Championships, have appeared in their early 20s were it

:02:45.:02:48.

has not worked out for them. They have had a lot of negativity. It

:02:49.:02:52.

scars them. They have to deal with them further in their career. What

:02:53.:02:57.

we're trying to do in British have -- athletics with the sprinters is

:02:58.:03:00.

to make sure they do not have this situation where they are asked

:03:01.:03:05.

talented as juniors and fade away in their early 20s. In terms of your

:03:06.:03:10.

goals and dreams and hopes and aspirations, do you set yourself

:03:11.:03:16.

targets for each season? Is it a long-term thing? For me, I just want

:03:17.:03:24.

to make the next Olympics. That is probably the long-term goal. Short

:03:25.:03:28.

term this year, Commonwealth games and European Championships. You want

:03:29.:03:33.

to go and win. As silly as it may sound with some of the sprinters you

:03:34.:03:36.

have got in the world at the moment, you want to be challenging for a

:03:37.:03:41.

gold medal. A gold medal is what every sprinter once. -- wants. You

:03:42.:03:49.

will see Adam Gemili in action later.

:03:50.:04:13.

But missed anything. You can now see how the high jump competition is

:04:14.:04:23.

getting on. Two metres and 41 for brushing. -- Barshim. That was a

:04:24.:04:33.

very good clearance! 2.41 equals the world. That is a new meeting record.

:04:34.:04:48.

The record has stood since 2005. He has forced Bondarenko up to that

:04:49.:04:53.

height. That looks very, very much like he could attempt something much

:04:54.:05:02.

more. That is world record jumping. It really is hotting up to be a

:05:03.:05:06.

great head to head between Barshim and Bondarenko. The host broadcaster

:05:07.:05:12.

will show us the pictures when they can. It is right behind us. They are

:05:13.:05:18.

on that -- their way to a magic 2.45. 21 years the record has stood.

:05:19.:05:27.

Maybe it is going to go. It is incredible. In the last couple of

:05:28.:05:31.

years we have felt it could go. These guys are pushing each other

:05:32.:05:37.

on. Clearing 2.40 on a regular basis. It would be fitting of the

:05:38.:05:42.

record goes tonight. I am chuffed for Barshim. Injury problems last

:05:43.:05:50.

year. He is back to his best. 1993 was when the record was set. 2.45.

:05:51.:05:59.

At the time, when those records are broken, you don't necessarily think

:06:00.:06:03.

it is going to take 21 years to break it. So many guys have got

:06:04.:06:09.

close. That is nearly two and a half metres. It is so high. It is up

:06:10.:06:14.

here. These guys are clearing it. They are clearing 2.41, 2.42. This

:06:15.:06:24.

is why I love live athletics. On TV you cannot put it into perspective

:06:25.:06:28.

how high it is. Using their own forces to propel themselves over

:06:29.:06:33.

this incredible height. I hope I can see it. Obviously I was not there

:06:34.:06:39.

last time, a much younger girl! Don't be cheeky! We're moving on to

:06:40.:06:48.

the men's 200 metres. We will talk a bit more about Adam Gemili as we

:06:49.:06:53.

head into the 100 metres in about 50 minutes. This is the 200 metres

:06:54.:06:59.

race. Lemaitre is the fastest man in the field. The fastest man in the

:07:00.:07:04.

world so far this year. Who are the other names we should be looking out

:07:05.:07:10.

for? There is a young Jamaican in the field. There is always a young

:07:11.:07:16.

Jamaican coming through. Julian Forte is definitely one to watch in

:07:17.:07:22.

Lane nine. Making waves. It will be interesting to see how he adapts to

:07:23.:07:28.

this environment. It is a good field. None of these guys have

:07:29.:07:32.

dipped under 20 seconds so far this year. Let's see if they can do it

:07:33.:07:39.

tonight. Back to Steve and Stewart. The men's meter -- the men's 200

:07:40.:07:43.

metres. Lemaitre... Deep in concentration.

:07:44.:08:01.

Difficult lane with Edwards inside him. Byram, the American.

:08:02.:08:41.

Not a great deal in it. I think Edward might have taken something

:08:42.:08:50.

out of his man on the outside. Forte of Jamaica is going well. Alonso

:08:51.:08:57.

Edward on the inside. What a good run by Lemaitre! Second behind

:08:58.:09:04.

Edward. 20.19. That was a very good race. To wire was challenging well.

:09:05.:09:13.

-- Dwyer. It went with the form book in a way. Edward came in here with

:09:14.:09:25.

20 seconds dead. 20.19. Lemaitre, 20.24. Lovely transition from

:09:26.:09:34.

Edward. Look on the inside in Lane two, how well Dwyer was going at

:09:35.:09:41.

this stage. Also Mitchell, Lemaitre was really having a go. It was a

:09:42.:09:48.

very good race indeed. Lemaitre really had belief. If Lemaitre could

:09:49.:09:54.

run a bend like Edward he could have a chance. We know he is untidy and

:09:55.:10:02.

he is big. The arms do things they should not do. It just gives Edward

:10:03.:10:06.

the few metres coming into the home straight. Lemaitre was pecking,

:10:07.:10:15.

trying to get there. Edward looking good so far. Unbeaten so far this

:10:16.:10:17.

year. Three season's bests in the race.

:10:18.:10:36.

Ashmeade, Edward and Lemaitre B3 in the points at the moment. That will

:10:37.:10:41.

certainly change as the season develops. -- are the three and the

:10:42.:10:56.

points. This is the javelin. The Australian in second place. She

:10:57.:11:00.

broke the Australian record earlier this year. Still leads with 61.98.

:11:01.:11:12.

Difficult conditions out there for the javelin throwers. The air is

:11:13.:11:19.

pretty still. Quite heavy, to be honest. The only advantage they have

:11:20.:11:24.

got is that the wind is slightly over their shoulder, which is good.

:11:25.:11:31.

Bondarenko, look at this. 2.41, he passes, and he goes for 2.43. This

:11:32.:11:38.

would be almost history. Only Sutter Meyer has gone higher. See if he can

:11:39.:11:51.

do it. That was close. If anything, that was even better. Barshim has

:11:52.:12:05.

got V2 .41. Bondarenko past at that height. Looking down the field and,

:12:06.:12:13.

of course, there was a failure at 2.31 which caused him to pass at

:12:14.:12:20.

2.41 and do 2.43. Look at that. He has passed all the way through.

:12:21.:12:28.

Talking about the Cuban triple jumpers. This man has seen his young

:12:29.:12:33.

compatriot take the lead. He is leading with 1707. -- 17 point 07.

:12:34.:12:43.

The triple jumpers have struggled out there as well tonight.

:12:44.:12:58.

A lot of big triple jumpers will have two go home tonight and say

:12:59.:13:05.

they were beaten by a 16-year-old. -- to go home. That would be big

:13:06.:13:11.

news. It certainly would. Fifth place. The high jump now. Barshim is

:13:12.:13:21.

going to have a third attempt at 2.43. If both men fail their last

:13:22.:13:31.

attempts at 2.43. Then Barshim wins by virtue of his appearance at 2.41.

:13:32.:13:38.

This would be an area record. It would be two centimetres of the

:13:39.:13:44.

world record. This young fellow has really grown in stature since his

:13:45.:13:51.

bronze medal in the Olympic games. His consistency has been impressive.

:13:52.:13:57.

His competitive brain has been working well. Long, long approach to

:13:58.:14:04.

the far side of the track. That was so close! I thought he had

:14:05.:14:18.

got it! It was the slightest little naked on the top of that bar. My

:14:19.:14:27.

goodness, May. -- my goodness me. It shows three failures but that was

:14:28.:14:32.

quite something. That was as close as it gets. If we watch the slow

:14:33.:14:36.

motion we will see how close that was. Just his socks! Let's put it

:14:37.:14:46.

down to his socks! What a great effort. Bondarenko to come. The

:14:47.:14:51.

women's javelin. This is the leader. of them are struggling but she is

:14:52.:15:15.

getting it to fly and that is better. Just beyond the leading

:15:16.:15:23.

marker. The world leader is beyond 66 at the moment but they are not

:15:24.:15:28.

near that. It is a pretty good field. Earlier on tonight, we had a

:15:29.:15:36.

cracking women's triple jump competition. Really got going in the

:15:37.:15:42.

second round. Gay of Cuba following in some great traditions. There was

:15:43.:15:54.

an early lead of 14.17 in round one. It went to 14.38 and lasted for

:15:55.:16:06.

quite a while. Koneva of Russia, world indoor champion, produced a

:16:07.:16:10.

great effort. Second best in the world this year. It was close to

:16:11.:16:17.

where the Winter Olympics were held in Sochi. And then Ibarguen really

:16:18.:16:32.

sat and watched all of that and that was when the competition came to

:16:33.:16:35.

light. The Colombian had a fairly easy night, to be honest. Just two

:16:36.:16:41.

jumps. 14.08 in the first round and then this was good enough for the

:16:42.:16:46.

win. That strapping on her hamstring may have been a factor, not wanting

:16:47.:16:51.

to jump too much. She then limped off, which tells you everything you

:16:52.:16:56.

need to know. But she had enough in that hamstring to get the win. Not

:16:57.:17:01.

by much, 14.48, and she took no further part in the competition.

:17:02.:17:13.

Williams in eighth place. Two wins out of two for the Colombian,

:17:14.:17:20.

Ibarguen. And Koneva got two points tonight in second. It is all

:17:21.:17:24.

happening back on the track. The women's 800 metres and what an

:17:25.:17:32.

interesting race it will be. Marina Arzamasova on the inside. Ajee

:17:33.:17:42.

Wilson, the great young American. And talking about youngsters, I

:17:43.:17:46.

can't wait to see the Cuban athlete, Diago Mesa.

:17:47.:17:57.

They were meant to be sharing a lane and I am trying to work out who is

:17:58.:18:04.

not there. They have shifted it around a bit. Or maybe they are in

:18:05.:18:12.

the correct lanes? That's years, in four. I am not convinced they are in

:18:13.:18:14.

right lanes but four. I am not convinced they are in

:18:15.:18:25.

all there. Two former champions in that lane. Angelika Cichocka. And

:18:26.:18:38.

Janeth Jepkosgei eye, she has just turned 20. I apologise for the wrong

:18:39.:18:41.

captions coming up here. Wilson, the former youth champion. And then next

:18:42.:18:49.

to her, this is a real talent, the person many people want to see. Just

:18:50.:19:05.

18 years of age, Diago Mesa. She ran 1.57.74 in Cuba and she is heading

:19:06.:19:10.

the world rankings at just 18. Let's see how she goes here. Malika

:19:11.:19:17.

Akkaoui and Marta Milani sharing a lane. The officials are not doing

:19:18.:19:28.

anything about putting them in the lanes that they are supposed to be

:19:29.:19:33.

in, unfortunately. This is Martinez, in lane eight, and she ran macro the

:19:34.:19:43.

1500 the other day. -- she ran. Eunice Sum is the world 800 metre

:19:44.:19:52.

champion. And on the outside, Agatha Jeruto, the pacemaker.

:19:53.:20:04.

The women's 800 metres, away they go. I am interested to see if the

:20:05.:20:10.

likes of cast Semenya is back on form. Running at the weekend as

:20:11.:20:20.

well. Big new names could come to the fore in this. And great

:20:21.:20:33.

experience for the likes of Janeth Jepkosgei as well. Sensibly sitting

:20:34.:20:37.

off the pace now. Yes, the principles are bunching together in

:20:38.:20:42.

that trading group behind the pacemaker. Just looking to see how

:20:43.:20:50.

they are faring. The Cubans are there, Diago is there. The remainder

:20:51.:20:59.

of the group all bunching together. 400 to go. 57.81 is a good first 400

:21:00.:21:10.

metres. Agatha Jeruto likes to be at the front. Diago looks like she is

:21:11.:21:15.

ready to pounce. Does she have the pace and strength? It will be

:21:16.:21:19.

interesting to see. Eunice Sum will take the lead when the pacemaker

:21:20.:21:27.

drops out. Ajee Wilson on the inside as well. Eunice Sum will try and

:21:28.:21:30.

control this from the front. Boxed on the inside. So many looks

:21:31.:21:38.

terrible as she struggles over the final 200 metres -- Caster Semenya.

:21:39.:21:47.

If the 18-year-old has anything to give, she will have to get on good

:21:48.:21:50.

terms with Eunice Sum now but she will not be able to. They are all

:21:51.:21:54.

finishing very quickly that they are not going to catch Eunice Sum. Diago

:21:55.:21:59.

will hang onto second place. A real scrap for third and Eunice Sum takes

:22:00.:22:04.

the victory. More from that youngster to come, I am pretty sure.

:22:05.:22:08.

But the World Champion has done a good job of controlling things very

:22:09.:22:12.

nicely for me. When the pacemaker drops out, you are left at the

:22:13.:22:18.

front, just winding it up, winding it up, nothing anyone else can do

:22:19.:22:22.

about it. She is learning to be one of the best tactical 800 metre

:22:23.:22:28.

runners at the moment. Very good for Eunice Sum, returning to the

:22:29.:22:31.

eventually knows best. Pretty much controlled that. She did. --

:22:32.:22:39.

returning to the event she knows best. Pretty much controlled that.

:22:40.:22:45.

Yes, taking the pace early on. She controlled it. You have to say that

:22:46.:22:56.

this 18-year-old is a real talent. Those 1.57s just underlined on

:22:57.:23:00.

occasions like this. Eunice Sum looks very strong indeed. Nobody is

:23:01.:23:08.

really dominating the women's 800 metres running for me yet. If you

:23:09.:23:13.

are World Champion, you have to come and win the races and she will be

:23:14.:23:16.

hoping to get confirmed selection for the Commonwealth Games over the

:23:17.:23:20.

weekend. I am sure that the Kenyan team will pick her. Some pushing and

:23:21.:23:31.

shoving. Martinez giving Marina Arzamasova a shove, but that is what

:23:32.:23:37.

happens in the 800 metres. She brought the field back to a steady

:23:38.:23:42.

pace at 400 and finished in control. Watch out for Diago. She will be a

:23:43.:23:49.

favourite. 20 years of age. A season's best. Ajee Wilson finishing

:23:50.:23:57.

well in third. Two out of two for Eunice Sum in the Diamond race.

:23:58.:24:05.

This is our leader and I said it would not take long for her to get

:24:06.:24:13.

back to the top of the pile. 66.43. This is live. Another big effort.

:24:14.:24:18.

That is more like it. Close to the lead. The world leaders are just

:24:19.:24:29.

evading her. Clearly a year out has not made much difference at all.

:24:30.:24:36.

Spotakova all smiles. Close there. 66.43 in the second round and that

:24:37.:24:42.

one just a bit shy. 66.38. Completely dominating this event at

:24:43.:24:47.

the moment. Pool metres ahead of everyone else. The Olympic champion

:24:48.:24:53.

very much back in the groove. -- pool metres ahead of everyone else.

:24:54.:25:04.

Apologies, that was the previous successful jump. There we go. She

:25:05.:25:15.

did win at 4.70. She failed 4.83 times. We are just updating you on

:25:16.:25:24.

that. -- three times she failed 4.80. She is so athletic.

:25:25.:25:32.

That was his third and final and he clipped it as well! Bohdan

:25:33.:25:39.

Bondarenko gets second place. My goodness me. That shows that that

:25:40.:25:47.

world record at 2.45 is in some danger this season, if they get the

:25:48.:25:53.

conditions right. They plan it well. They both clipped it with their

:25:54.:26:05.

heels, almost identically. Young Mutaz Barshim.

:26:06.:26:11.

The world record is not to be tonight but Mutaz Barshim and Bohdan

:26:12.:26:18.

Bondarenko enjoying a fabulous competition. With so many of these

:26:19.:26:27.

men getting 2.40 and over. It really was just his socks, wasn't it? So

:26:28.:26:36.

not far away. I was a bit disappointed by Ivan Ukhov, but he

:26:37.:26:40.

seems to be having trouble with his run-up. That event is going from

:26:41.:26:46.

strength to strength. A wide range of nationalities represented. It is

:26:47.:26:50.

really interesting, diversity in that particular that. Not so much in

:26:51.:26:54.

sprinting. Jamaicans and Americans still dominating the short and

:26:55.:27:01.

sprints. Next up Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. The double Olympic,

:27:02.:27:06.

double World Champion. She has taken everything that has come at her. She

:27:07.:27:13.

competed in Doha, not looking full throttle, pushed all the way. But it

:27:14.:27:20.

is early days in the season for her. After that long season with the

:27:21.:27:27.

World Championship, everybody is pushing all the way. Some athletes

:27:28.:27:31.

are not yet at 100% and maybe for them this is the season that they

:27:32.:27:35.

take their feet off the gas. A lot of the top athletes, especially from

:27:36.:27:40.

Jamaica, there is a dilemma. Yes, you want to represent your country

:27:41.:27:44.

and to be there, but with the Olympics and the World

:27:45.:27:47.

Championships, that cycle is very demanding, it really is. Shelly-Ann

:27:48.:27:53.

Fraser-Pryce, she is tripling up, basically, rounds and relays, and it

:27:54.:28:00.

takes its toll and she is not a machine. I think she has looked

:28:01.:28:04.

quite lacklustre. Even indoors she was not quite as up until she

:28:05.:28:10.

stormed to victory in the final at the indoors. The Diamond League is

:28:11.:28:15.

about making money for the athletes because it is very tough. It is

:28:16.:28:23.

important to put it into context. There are some lucrative global

:28:24.:28:26.

sponsorship deals for people like Usain Bolt, but in Jamaica, not a

:28:27.:28:30.

wealthy country, she does not go back home and find herself blessed

:28:31.:28:35.

with tonnes of contract and endorsements, so she makes her cash

:28:36.:28:41.

on the circuit. Absolutely, an appearance fee and trying to win the

:28:42.:28:45.

thing overall. It makes a difference but I would like to see her

:28:46.:28:51.

dominating in Rio, 2016, and if she carries on and has a season which is

:28:52.:28:55.

lacklustre, she may run brilliantly tonight and tell me to shut up! But

:28:56.:29:00.

what I have seen so far has been hit and miss. Murielle Ahoure in the

:29:01.:29:10.

field as well, having pushed her many times before. From the Ivory

:29:11.:29:14.

Coast. And Kerron Stewart, another Jamaican pushing her. Tori Bowie

:29:15.:29:22.

from the USA was amazing over 200 metres. She obliterated the field.

:29:23.:29:27.

Very surprising. It is her big outing in the

:29:28.:29:27.

Very surprising. It is her big will be interesting to see how she

:29:28.:29:32.

handles the 100th. Let's get down to the track. The next event is the

:29:33.:29:38.

women's 100 metres. weeks for Fraser-Pryce. She ran in

:29:39.:29:57.

Italy a couple of days ago. She ran slow by her standards. Bartoletta is

:29:58.:30:11.

capable of going under 11 seconds. Third at the World Indoor

:30:12.:30:17.

Championship this year. What about this lady? Tory belly. -- Bowie.

:30:18.:30:25.

Ready to do something in the 100 metres. Great long jumper as well. I

:30:26.:30:34.

think Bowie is going to be a real danger. Bowie has set personal bests

:30:35.:30:44.

this year at 60 metres indoors. 6.95 for the long jump indoors. A new

:30:45.:30:52.

personal best of 100 metres. The great win over 200. Shelly-Ann

:30:53.:30:59.

Fraser-Pryce, the double Olympic champion, in Lane four. Bowie in the

:31:00.:31:11.

blue with the number seven. Stewart on the other side of Fraser-Pryce.

:31:12.:31:18.

The women's 100 metres. Question marks over the Jamaican's form. A

:31:19.:31:29.

clean start. Fraser-Pryce got off well. Bowie is storming through. It

:31:30.:31:37.

is going to be incredibly tight. Bowie gets it! A poor start from the

:31:38.:31:48.

long jumper. She shopped them over 200 metres in Eugene and she has

:31:49.:31:52.

done it again over the 100. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce is not in

:31:53.:31:56.

the sort of form she would want to be in. If that hamstring is

:31:57.:31:59.

bothering her, she needs to go away and sorted out. Somebody of her

:32:00.:32:05.

calibre, although she will be all smiles, I don't think she would be

:32:06.:32:07.

too happy about not winning these races. Stewart got off better than

:32:08.:32:16.

Bowie. Bowie had a terrible start. Fraser-Pryce was not that out of the

:32:17.:32:23.

blocks. Bowie took a metre, 1.5 metres out of them in the last 30

:32:24.:32:30.

metres. I think when you look at that performance, you saw her run

:32:31.:32:35.

that 200 from the inside lane, that takes a lot of strength endurance

:32:36.:32:40.

and speed endurance. When you are working hard at the end of the race,

:32:41.:32:46.

she has a little bit more armoury. So has Fraser-Pryce. She is not as

:32:47.:32:51.

fit as we have seen her before. I am very impressed with Bowie. Two in

:32:52.:33:07.

succession. She has come on a lot. Tory Bowie, you said watch out for

:33:08.:33:13.

her. She has come here in good form. A terrible start. She was

:33:14.:33:19.

almost left in the blocks. She powered through with 30 metres to

:33:20.:33:25.

go. She looked really good. I have to say, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, we

:33:26.:33:35.

are so not used to seeing anything less than fantastic. She is not the

:33:36.:33:42.

same. I am sure, although she is still smiling, she is not happy.

:33:43.:33:50.

Bowie is going to be coming down the line any second. Shelly-Ann

:33:51.:33:52.

Fraser-Pryce talking to Italian television. She is still smiling.

:33:53.:34:00.

She has got the masses of hair out. Maybe this is a less intense winter

:34:01.:34:06.

is showing on the track. Steve did mention a niggling injury. There is

:34:07.:34:12.

a long season. Eight weeks until the Commonwealth games. Bowie, what an

:34:13.:34:17.

exciting prospect. A long jumper as well. The coach told her to try

:34:18.:34:23.

track and field. Yes, and she looks great. You cannot talk about her

:34:24.:34:28.

technique. It seems to be together. She is just strong. She looks

:34:29.:34:34.

fantastic. This is the first time we are seeing her on this circuit. She

:34:35.:34:38.

seems to be relishing it. She seems to be taking it all in. She is on

:34:39.:34:41.

top of her game and enjoying herself. She is really at the start

:34:42.:34:47.

of her sprinting career. She is long jumping. She has got a fantastic

:34:48.:34:53.

career ahead of her. The technique is there as well. Absolutely. Come

:34:54.:35:00.

next year when we are at the World Championships and the pressure is

:35:01.:35:06.

on, should she continue to keep this form, how would you cope with the

:35:07.:35:11.

expectation? She is relatively unknown in the sprinting world in

:35:12.:35:15.

this domain and running so quickly. Finish like that after a poor start

:35:16.:35:22.

bodes well. -- to finish like that. She does not seem to be scared of

:35:23.:35:28.

anything. We are enjoying some fabulous athletics tonight. As we

:35:29.:35:32.

will do throughout the summer on the BBC. There may be no World

:35:33.:35:37.

Championships or Olympic Games, but we have the Commonwealth games and

:35:38.:35:42.

the Diamond League. All here on the BBC.

:35:43.:37:12.

Denise, we really are just at the start of a fabulous season. There

:37:13.:37:20.

may be no Olympics and that changes the dynamic of the year slightly for

:37:21.:37:25.

athletes. The British-based athletes, the Commonwealth Games is

:37:26.:37:29.

an exciting prospect. A home games as well. When you get the likes of

:37:30.:37:33.

Usain Bolt not yet committing his season and David Rudisha not looking

:37:34.:37:39.

full package yet, you realise how important the big names are to the

:37:40.:37:43.

sport. This place, 60,000 were in here last year. The box office stars

:37:44.:37:50.

can make a huge difference. They do. This is what people want to pay to

:37:51.:37:56.

see. This brings them out from their workplaces to get down on a night

:37:57.:38:00.

when they think the stars are there. It is dangerous because the other

:38:01.:38:04.

athletes do not get a look in. We are not add capacity here tonight.

:38:05.:38:08.

We know why. There are still some great athletics to be had. It is

:38:09.:38:14.

time for the new stars to step up and grab the opportunity is. Mo

:38:15.:38:20.

Farah has committed himself to running in the Glasgow Diamond

:38:21.:38:24.

League. So has your hand late. There are still some fantastic names --

:38:25.:38:33.

your hand lake. We would like to see Usain Bolt. This is the men's 3000

:38:34.:38:38.

metres steeplechase is. That's my steeplechase. Kemboi from Kenya has

:38:39.:38:48.

two Olympics and three world titles. It is a strong field.

:38:49.:38:57.

With 3000 metres of steeplechasing underway, an event that

:38:58.:38:59.

With 3000 metres of steeplechasing the rhythm. We have the

:39:00.:39:05.

With 3000 metres of steeplechasing in the form of Kemboi. There are a

:39:06.:39:10.

couple of athletes called Kemboi. One is a pacemaker. We will see how

:39:11.:39:14.

quickly that first 1000 metres is going to be. This is will play in

:39:15.:39:20.

the triple jump. He has got to get his act together.

:39:21.:39:26.

That is better. As he got a white flag to the white like goes up. Much

:39:27.:39:38.

better. He might have finally got things together. It has been a

:39:39.:39:40.

difficult night for the triple jumpers. Translating all of that

:39:41.:39:50.

pace on the runway will stop reaching the end. I think he knows

:39:51.:39:54.

it may be good enough to take the lead. It is indeed. 17.14. He

:39:55.:40:01.

finally gets it together and take the lead away from his compatriot,

:40:02.:40:07.

Christian Taylor, and moves Martin is into third. -- Martinez. As they

:40:08.:40:17.

start to get into the race, it is collective Kenya who is leading.

:40:18.:40:29.

We go back to the javelin. We are reaching the final stages. The fifth

:40:30.:40:49.

round. Two big throws in the second and third rounds of 66 metres, which

:40:50.:40:55.

broke things apart. A great you she is having. A great season. That will

:40:56.:41:01.

be no improvement. She will stay in second place. We will be looking for

:41:02.:41:11.

the first of the markers on the first 1000 metres. We're looking for

:41:12.:41:29.

2.38. Chasing the pacemakers. Look at the club as we approach the 1000

:41:30.:41:33.

metres mark. They were looking for 2.40. Just outside. Christian Taylor

:41:34.:41:39.

in the triple jump. Can he respond? He has been mixing things up with

:41:40.:41:54.

the 400 metres this year but he is trying to concentrate on this event

:41:55.:42:00.

for a while. There will be more to come from him. He has been a little

:42:01.:42:07.

bit of and then in both competitions. He had 1/70 metres.

:42:08.:42:24.

See you there. That's max 70 -- 70 metres.

:42:25.:42:35.

Lagat is still out in front. He is set in place. Is beginning to. As

:42:36.:42:51.

they go into the second 1000 metres, the second of the pacemakers

:42:52.:42:55.

in second, looking quite comfortable.

:42:56.:43:42.

Already getting back to form, Spotakova. Pretty consistent now.

:43:43.:43:58.

The Olympic champion. In the fifth round. She launches it. Another good

:43:59.:44:07.

throw. Right on the 65 metre line. That will be interesting to see how

:44:08.:44:12.

she develops through the rest of the season. European Championships this

:44:13.:44:17.

year will be a target for her to get herself back into winning ways and

:44:18.:44:24.

on the rostrum. She became a mother last year. Took the season out,

:44:25.:44:28.

pretty much. This was a few minutes ago. She was lying in third spot.

:44:29.:44:42.

A big win in Doha. Took advantage of a slightly indifferent night. This

:44:43.:45:14.

was just a few minutes ago. Trying to get out of that line but the

:45:15.:45:26.

condition is not great. 63.12 for Ratez. Look at the margin of

:45:27.:45:37.

advantage that is opening up in the steeplechase. Brimin Kiprop Kipruto

:45:38.:46:02.

is in third place. Kit sang -- Kipsang is pacing. This is going to

:46:03.:46:09.

be a very quick one. Brimin Kiprop Kipruto looks like he might be under

:46:10.:46:12.

pressure in third place, but I don't think so. I am not sure what has

:46:13.:46:20.

happened to as a keel can boy. -- Ezekiel Kemboi. He is not in the

:46:21.:46:28.

race. What has happened? If you saw it, I didn't. It has left the way

:46:29.:46:35.

open. It certainly has. The rest of 40 metres behind the first three,

:46:36.:46:43.

but Koech took the lead behind the pacemakers for some time. And look

:46:44.:46:52.

at the clock. Very quick indeed. Birech has seen the clock. It will

:46:53.:47:00.

be a very strong time indeed. 8.06.21. The rest are following. A

:47:01.:47:10.

close race for the rest but not for the man who won it. Not a great race

:47:11.:47:15.

to watch but it was a great performance by the young man who

:47:16.:47:17.

took it on. A very quick race in the end. You

:47:18.:47:30.

see the Kenny and urging each other on in that race and there is so much

:47:31.:47:36.

competition for places. -- Kenyans. To get into the top three for the

:47:37.:47:42.

steeplechase in Kenya is merely a World Championship! Yes, this same

:47:43.:47:50.

in all of their long distance events. A joy to behold the new

:47:51.:47:56.

names coming up every year. The next Diamond League event takes place on

:47:57.:48:01.

Wednesday in Oslo. It will be on BBC Three and it will feature Allyson

:48:02.:48:07.

Felix and the new pole vault world record-holder, among others. Always

:48:08.:48:12.

a fantastic night in Oslo and a sell-out crowd with a fantastic

:48:13.:48:15.

atmosphere. There is a rich heritage. I will not be there. It

:48:16.:48:19.

will be Jonathan Edwards and Colin Jackson because I will be in

:48:20.:48:26.

Brazil. Did I mention I was going to Brazil? Just ten times! I am still

:48:27.:48:30.

enjoying tonight because it has been a fabulous evening so far. Seeing

:48:31.:48:43.

Tory Bowery has been brilliant. -- Tori Bowie. But the next race might

:48:44.:48:47.

be the most interesting from a British perspective. Adam Gemili

:48:48.:48:53.

broke onto the world stage at the World Championships. Sub 20 in the

:48:54.:49:01.

200 and an exciting prospect. For me his 200 metres time was significant.

:49:02.:49:04.

I believe that he can below ten seconds and he will need to start

:49:05.:49:09.

displaying some of that 200 metres strength if he is going to make that

:49:10.:49:14.

transition to being in the nine plus club, you know. It would be

:49:15.:49:20.

fantastic to see him doing that. And great rivalry. You need a

:49:21.:49:23.

head-to-head in every sport. It is great that it is happening in

:49:24.:49:28.

British men's sprinting. Of course Justin Gatlin is the fastest man in

:49:29.:49:31.

the world and in the field so far this year and he will be the man to

:49:32.:49:35.

beat. But Adam Gemili through the winter studied hard at university

:49:36.:49:40.

and trained hard. We had long chat with Michael Johnson about what he

:49:41.:49:43.

should do next to make the next stage. He said he wanted to break

:49:44.:49:49.

into the American and Jamaican stronghold and Michael Johnson said

:49:50.:49:54.

would be for the media to leave him alone and actually he has managed to

:49:55.:49:58.

do that. He says it modestly. He does not want to see his face on

:49:59.:50:01.

posters. He has not done anything yet. If he wants to burst onto the

:50:02.:50:07.

scene and win the big stuff, it is the hard work and the grafting that

:50:08.:50:11.

he has got to do and not go for the quick plaudits, I guess. He is not

:50:12.:50:16.

just on his own. Yes, he is one of the brightest prospects but there is

:50:17.:50:24.

James as well, who has robbed ten seconds. He is probably our best

:50:25.:50:30.

bet. And also Richard Kilty. It is exciting, it is rich. Adam is very

:50:31.:50:36.

level-headed. He has got his head screwed on and he is very sensible

:50:37.:50:40.

and it reflects on his approach to the season and what he wants to do,

:50:41.:50:44.

which is managed his studies and his education and athletics, which can

:50:45.:50:49.

be done. He gave up his career in football and chose athletics. One

:50:50.:50:52.

other thing is that resonated when we spent the day with him was that

:50:53.:50:57.

this is the hardest sport. He said it is much harder than training for

:50:58.:51:01.

football. He can't believe how hard he have to train. It is only since

:51:02.:51:05.

the Olympics in 2012 that he has really given it a proper go and

:51:06.:51:09.

understood how much he has got to learn, which is fascinating to see.

:51:10.:51:14.

Somebody who was going for another sport in football and then made the

:51:15.:51:19.

decision to cross over. Putting in perspective the dedication, the

:51:20.:51:24.

hours that it takes. And becoming the world junior champion made a big

:51:25.:51:28.

difference to that decision. What are the risks that you have to take?

:51:29.:51:33.

It is exciting. For me that is what I miss the most, the planning.

:51:34.:51:38.

Competing is relatively easy. If you are fit and healthy, it is. It is

:51:39.:51:46.

the planning, in positions, the decisions, whether you need to

:51:47.:51:51.

adjust things, and for him the next few years will be exciting and it

:51:52.:51:56.

starts tonight. They are in two different training camps. Steve

:51:57.:51:58.

Fudge looks after the group with Adam Gemili and Rana Rider looks

:51:59.:52:09.

after the Richard Kilty group. When Richard Kilty came out at the

:52:10.:52:13.

indoors, were you surprised when it came to that big event and he was

:52:14.:52:17.

able to break through like that? This was the year for him. I just

:52:18.:52:21.

thought it was great. It is not surprising. He has worked hard for

:52:22.:52:29.

his accolade. What I was impressed by the most was his attitude round

:52:30.:52:35.

by round. Very level-headed. He did not react either way to the personal

:52:36.:52:38.

best that he was setting. It was like he was a man on a mission and

:52:39.:52:43.

that was capped by that impressive run in the final. James has

:52:44.:52:49.

struggled a bit with getting through the rounds. He went into the World

:52:50.:52:53.

Championships in great form but has not got through the rounds. He got

:52:54.:52:58.

one brilliant time last year and then could not race for the second

:52:59.:53:02.

day, unfortunately. It is about going two or three rounds, isn't

:53:03.:53:06.

it? Every athlete has their challenges and they are all

:53:07.:53:10.

different. Some would say that James needs to raise more. They would like

:53:11.:53:13.

to see him on the circuit a bit more but he has got to manage his body.

:53:14.:53:18.

He is clearly quite fragile. They have got to get out there. There is

:53:19.:53:27.

a bigger picture. It is about competing with the Americans and the

:53:28.:53:29.

Jamaicans and in order to do that, they have got to raise their game.

:53:30.:53:32.

We are talking from a British perspective and this is a quality

:53:33.:53:34.

field. There are many great men there, not use that man, Justin

:53:35.:53:39.

Gatlin. The fastest man in the world this year. Expect the others to be

:53:40.:53:44.

chasing him. I will hand you over to the Steve Cram and Stuart Storey

:53:45.:53:45.

now. Mitchell Elaine four are next to him

:53:46.:53:56.

Nesta Carter. Struggling to find his best form. -- Mitchell in lane four.

:53:57.:54:14.

Simon Magakwe from South Africa, eighth in the Diamond League but has

:54:15.:54:17.

gone under ten seconds this year. His personal best is 9.98. Kim

:54:18.:54:23.

Collins still producing great performances. Indoors this year who

:54:24.:54:32.

ran 6.49. And on the outside, the young talent from Britain, Adam

:54:33.:54:38.

Gemili. Still 20 years old. Just been finishing a couple of weeks of

:54:39.:54:44.

exams. He ran 10.08 in Bedford in Great Britain just this last

:54:45.:54:47.

weekend. Some new names, some new talent. The likes of Richard Kilty

:54:48.:54:53.

trying to make their way in the big brave world of men's 100 metres

:54:54.:54:58.

running. And of course Justin Gatlin. Can anybody hold him back?

:54:59.:55:06.

Nesta Carter and Maurice Mitchell in five and four. Justin Gatlin has

:55:07.:55:13.

been in superb form and is starting well. He has maintained well

:55:14.:55:16.

throughout his races. Justin Gatlin at 9.91! Another

:55:17.:55:46.

scintillating run from Justin Gatlin! A big performance once more.

:55:47.:55:54.

Nobody really getting close to him. No Yohan Blake, no Usain Bolt yet.

:55:55.:56:03.

But in their absence, Justin Gatlin is unsurpassable. Under ten seconds

:56:04.:56:07.

once more. It is a bit chilly right now and that is a good performance.

:56:08.:56:16.

Betty Carter got a good start. Adam Gemili was not the best out of the

:56:17.:56:21.

blocks. But Justin Gatlin wins it in the first ten metres but he then

:56:22.:56:24.

keeps getting away, to be fair. Yes, very strong at the moment. Adam

:56:25.:56:31.

Gemili comes through to take third place. Good run by him. Nesta Carter

:56:32.:56:37.

has gone to the form book in a way. Not quite at the same level who was

:56:38.:56:44.

a couple of seasons ago, like he was in 2010. Justin Gatlin is so

:56:45.:56:48.

powerful. He comes up slowly and then puts the pressure on. Adam

:56:49.:56:58.

Gemili with us. We have not confirmed the time just yet. You

:56:59.:57:01.

will hear from him on the red button. Are you happy? We will do it

:57:02.:57:05.

on the red button. button. Are you happy? We will do it

:57:06.:57:08.

on Stay there. I hope you have enjoyed the action in Rome. From

:57:09.:57:13.

both of us, the coverage will continue in Oslo on Wednesday. Good

:57:14.:57:14.

night.
