Highlights - Day 8 Australian Open Tennis

Afternoon Good. Welcome to coverage of the 2016 Australian Open from

Melbourne. We feature the two British top-ranked players today,

Andy Murray and Johanna Konta, the start of the second week and as we

approached the business end of the tournament, when your number is

called you a better be ready. The number one British player. The

number two seed. 24-year-old Johanna Konta. Third round action.

number two seed. 24-year-old Johanna up the opening set. 6-2, in 29

minutes. For the first time in her career, through to the fourth round

of the Australian Open. He is through for the eighth straight

year. She has backed up a couple of really good wins. Four times the

runner-up and would like to go one better. We begin with Johanna Konta,

bidding to become the first British woman in 33 years to reach the last

eight of the Australian Open. Standing in her way, the Russian,

Ekaterina Makarova. Straightforward straight set wins earlier on for

Azarenka, could Johanna Konta join them? It was not a perfect start,

she lost the opening set 6-4, double faulting on set point down. We join

the match as she bids to respond in the first game of the second set.

Landed on the line, a bit of a scramble. It certainly was.

Just dropping that short. Johanna Konta did well to get to it but not

enough to get over her opponent. Nice reaction from Makarova. This is

just going to quickly for Johanna Konta. A good confidence best for

Makarova to get through that first set with the ease that she did.

Beautiful backhand. Tremendous depth. That gave her the opportunity

to move forward. Has not had too many chances. The depth that

Makarova has been hitting with. APPLAUSE

Duricic backhand. That horrific.

A fabulous shot. When things go wrong you can see Ekaterina Makarova

looking to the coaching box. I would say do not give her anything back!

Histrionics are not going to do any good. She got the first set, just

focus on the job at hand. She was 40 have loved up in this

game, that is worth the frustration is spilling out.

Johanna Konta. A great effort from Johanna Konta to

come back in that game. Really getting under the skin of Ekaterina

Makarova. No further breaks of serve so

Johanna Konta have the chance to serve for the second set.

Got the first serve and the results. This is good. Johanna Konta has the

luxury of having a second serve that looks like a first delivery. It is

out. That was the call. That is all right.

A fair bit of tension at both ends of the court. We have seen it

throughout the opportunity for one player to step up and go through to

the quarterfinal. Along with the expectations of favouritism.

APPLAUSE A clever point from Johanna Konta.

A slower, deeper ball. Driving that backhand down the line.

And set points for Johanna Konta to level at at 1-1.

Another good serve. And for reply from Ekaterina Makarova, deciding to

set in favour of Johanna Konta. Six games to four, one set all.

Match level but a delay at the start of the second set, a lengthy medical

time-out for Ekaterina Makarova, Johanna Konta not especially

pleased. But if she was distracted it did not show. We rejoin the

action with Ekaterina Makarova to serve.

That is on the line. Every point is hard-fought. Absolutely sensational

point. Ekaterina Makarova on the attack. Full stretch. Johanna Konta

finds the spot in the court and goes past.

APPLAUSE Rock-solid from Johanna Konta and

this is applying the pressure to Ekaterina Makarova.

Back at the feet of Makarova. That gives Johanna Konta great points.

Johanna Konta wielding the backhand like a sword, she gets the break and

she leads by five games to fall. She will be serving for the match after

this change of ends. This is a fabulous game from Johanna Konta.

Too good. Makarova reading that very well. It was a good save from

Johanna Konta. Got to come in with something fairly special against

Makarova, has great reach. Some negative emotion from Makarova

earlier in the match. Now when the pressure is on and she is behind,

she is really knuckling down. She needs to focus to have any chance of

getting back into the match. Good emotional control.

Australia was trying to claim Johanna Konta this week when she

started to do well. She spent her early years here in Australia before

moving to the UK. Good work from Ekaterina Makarova,

that shot set things up well Good work from Ekaterina Makarova,

Johanna Konta, she could not do enough with the high backhand and

aid the price. It gave Makarova another look at the shot.

lucky. A tight shot from Makarova. She needs another, Johanna Konta.

slick, even worse if there is any light rain outside.

APPLAUSE Construct that point well, patient,

tacking in to the backhand. Clench fist in the direction of the

coach. That was sensational. Outstanding.

First one corner and then the other. That shot she really gets a nice

angle on it. Moving away from Makarova. We have seen this as one

of her favourite shots, when she gets down the left knee almost

touching the court. She follows through beautifully on the backend.

-- backhand. Must not get any closer than this. Some big moments here.

APPLAUSE A challenge, a desperation

challenge. Interesting, she cried out thinking

that she had missed the shot. Then it seemed to drop with the spin she

put on it. She thought she had missed and then realised it may have

dropped in. And it has. By the barest margin.

She should not have called out during that point.

Too big. Time now for Johanna Konta just to

bear down and not allow this last couple of points to get under his

skin. -- her skin. Makarova. Now poised at six games to

five. It will come down to the serve which has been ineffectual at best.

It is a must hold game for Johanna Konta.

A good start. Mentally it makes such a difference. When you get that

first point in these vital games. When you're serving to stay in the

match. She has missed it! No, it has been

called good. I thought that it was about. I thought it was out as well.

She has only got one challenge left. It went out. A well played point.

Striking the ball so well. Makarova putting a bit of extra

juice on each shot in that point. The last one, just getting

overexcited. Telling herself to settle down and

temper things a little bit. Do not go crazy.

Too good. An amazing angle to, with. Just outstanding. -- to come up

with. As good a first serve as she has put

in. The placement was perfect. It certainly was. Has not often used

the slider out wide, good time to bring it out.

Six games all. A change-up in the pace.

Well done! Great attack from Johanna Konta deep into the corner. The

forehand of Makarova gets the short reply and does not overplay it,

controls are well. -- controlled it well.

Seventh double fault. A very tight second serve.

line, could not clear the high part of the night. Break point here for

Makarova. For Johanna Konta, rather. And there is the break. A careless

error from Makarova putting Johanna Konta ahead. And in the box seat at

seven games to six. First serve, 56% for this set. A

couple of extra percentage points, they could make all the difference.

A super start to the campaign. What a lovely serve.

Johanna Konta. And once is enough, what a result,

what a match! Outstanding result for the young British Crown. Make way,

Joe Durie, because Johanna Konta joins you now. This is massive for

Johanna Konta and a big step also for British tennis. Doing so well,

led by Andy Murray and now Johanna Konta stepping up to go through to a

Grand Slam quarterfinal and she is elated. What a match she played.

The first British woman to break into a quarterfinal at Melbourne

Park since Jo Durie in 1983. A bit of history tonight. It was quite a

saga, though, three hours? 3 hours and 4 minutes! Goodness gracious!

You guys made so much noise it felt like the whole stadium was full.

Unless you guys stand here, I don't think you will be able to appreciate

how much noise like that carries us in such difficult situations. Part

of the reason I'm standing here is because of you guys, thank you. You

have had an amazing rise over the last 12 months, was that one of the

most mentally-draining matches you have been a part of? I think it was

mentally, emotionally, physically - I left it all out here on court! I

just tried to hang in there and just run after every single ball and keep

fighting every point. That is all I can do at the end of the day. I feel

fortunate enough that I was able to capitalise on some opportunities and

close it out in the end. What do you tell yourself? How do you keep

yourself going? You have won through after those 3 hours and 4 minutes?

Thank you for acknowledging the 4 minutes! It is about just keep

walking, breathing and moving, and keep your mind as quiet as possible.

The less thoughts the better. You play the winner of Madison Keys or

Shuai Zhang. Will you head home and watch that one in an ice bath? What

from Great Britain, the first woman through to the quarterfinals here at

Melbourne Park since 1983. Confirmation of the bottom half of

the draw. Through are Kerber and Azarenka. Johanna Konta will play

Shuai Zhang. Konta through. What could Murray do? It had been a

difficult week with his father-in-law Nigel Sears taken ill.

His next obstacle on the court was the Australian, Bernard Tomic. Here

is the draw. Milos Raonic through after a thrilling victory in five

sets over the former champion, Stan Wawrinka and he joins Gael Monfils

in the quarterfinals. The prize for Murray or Tomic would be a meeting

with David Ferrer after he knocked out John Isner. Murray started well.

We join it with a break, 2-1 he leads first set.

Two sloppy errors from Andy Murray. Two overhit forehands.

More of a natural shop for his motion. -- natural shape for his

motion. And can drag his opponent to the deuce side of the court.

Three dodgy decisions this game from Murray on shot selection. You don't

see that often. It was like he was in two minds. He wasn't quick. Two

break-points for Bernard Tomic. APPLAUSE

Tomic comes out on top and they are back level. Nice to see that

patience from Tomic there, willing to hit enough balls - 25 of them -

until he could put more pace into the forehand.

You'd be even if you were sitting in the

Tomic box? That was so wide. Great use of taking the spin off to drag

it. And he's gone to it a few too much

now, Josh. Yeah. Now go for some heavy groundies down the line, try

and back up Tomic to get him on his heels. That's an unusual error, too,

from Tomic. Normally, got great racquet control around the ball.

Yes. You are spot on there, Paul. He

needs to go back in behind Bernard. He may not got the success or the

results straightaway, but, over the long run, that is exhausting for a

player. Especially for a big man. He is 6ft 5in.

Oh my gosh! Are you kidding me? That went in? He's got the line. What a

point. A 32-shot rally. went in? He's got the line. What a

longest you will see all tournament. That is so nasty. How do you think

Bernard Tomic's That is so nasty. How do you think

right about now, having to serve down two break-points? Well done.

playing a long point like that. An amazing couple of gets from Andy

be annoyed about losing his last service game.

Such a simple technique on the backhand. Nothing will go wrong,

rarely will break down, easy through the ball.

That is his go-to serve, the slider down the T. 187 kilometres an hour,

just sliding away. Better rhythm on the serve now.

Occasionally, has a tendency to throw the ball too far out in front,

and the left arm will pull down. He is staying up strong at the moment.

Nice return off the first ball there from Tomic, just nice, clean strike,

right up the middle to a big target. That's a real positive game from

Murray. Just trying to stamp his authority on this match early on.

4-2 lead. Some of that tennis IQ there from

Andy Murray. A couple of slices and the second one, off of Bernard's

ball, watch the sidespin bouncing out wide to the Tomic forehand.

In trouble again here, Tomic. Down 0-40.

He's got him on the run. He's got him on a string! Andy Murray, 5 -2

first set. Murray closed out the first set 6-4. We join it now at the

start of the second. UMPIRE: Mr Murray is challenging the

call on the left centreline, the ball was called out.

That's controlled, Josh. It looks very comfortable standing inside the

baseline there. Not overhit. Again, in the middle of the box, second

serve, he deserved it. Murray is under pressure here -

sorry, Bernard Tomic on serve. He can't buy a free point. Down a

couple of break-points. APPLAUSE

Great start. He's got the momentum. A scruffy second set went the same

way, 6-4 Murray. They traded breaks in the third and it went down to a

tie-break. Tomic taking his eye off the ball,

seeing Murray guess to that corner. A huge mistake first point.

That's a better point. Open up the court, produce some angles.

A little unlucky, though, on return. That floating return, then two big

forehands. Look at the Great Court position for Tomic, a step inside

the baseline, controlled aggression cross-court over the low part of the

net. Perfect. Careful now, careful now, Bernie,

slow down. That's a nice offensive forehand off

a terrific floating deep return. Andy Murray, 4-2, with a mini break.

One more serve to come. That brings up four match-points for

the world number two, Andy Murray. An opportunity to move on through to

the quarterfinals. Bernard Tomic is asking the

question. Match-point number three. The last one left on his serve.

And he gets it this time! Andy Murray wraps it up in straight sets.

He is too good for Bernard Tomic. A straight-sets winner, 6-4, 6-4, 7-6.

A very awkward match-up for Andy Murray coming through against

Bernard Tomic. He played some good tennis at times, Josh. Right now,

that's kind of the best he could play right now.

Let's hear from Andy Murray. Playing Bernie is never easy. You

have played him a few times. A lot of cat-and-mouse, what was the

difference, how did you get through this one tonight? It was tough. Both

of us had our chances. The tie-break, Bernie didn't play his

best tie-break, he missed a few easy balls, so that helped at the end

when I was nervous. He fought right to the end. Made it very tough for

me. I was able to make a few more balls. It was quite a scrappy match.

I don't think there was a period in the match where both of us were

playing our best the same time. You have had an up-and-down couple of

weeks. It has been challenging for you off the court. Has it been hard

for you to stay focussed here between the lines? Yeah, the last

few days were very tough. A lot of emotions. Yeah, things changing all

of the time in my head so it has been a stressful few days. It's good

to get through today. I will try and rest up and be more relaxed the next

couple of days. You have a tough opponent ahead, so you will need to

be ready. David Ferrer was able to get through against John Isner, that

is your next opponent. You have a rich history. What are your thoughts

on that match? A tough match. He's - he obviously played a great match

against Lleyton Hewitt the other day. He must be playing well to beat

John. A great effort for David to get through. 100%, it won't be an

easy match. He makes you work extremely hard. He is a great

player. He has been at the top for ten years now. He's got a lot of

experience. It will be tricky. Sounds like you have described

yourself! Andy Murray on to the Sounds like you have described

quarterfinals. Well done. Get some rest, big guy.
