Let's cross to Roger Johnson from
BBC Northwest Tonight obvious at the | 0:00:00 | 0:00:02
Sports Personality of the Year. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:06
Hello and welcome to viewers on the
BBC News Channel to the Echo Arena | 0:00:49 | 0:00:53
here in Liverpool, a magnificent
view this evening, and this is what | 0:00:53 | 0:00:57
it's all about. The BBC Sports
personality of the year trophy, 12 | 0:00:57 | 0:01:01
contenders who you have just seen,
one of them will be crowned the | 0:01:01 | 0:01:06
winner for 2017 within the space of
a couple of hours this evening. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:10
We are going to be chatting to a lot
of the stars from sporting scenes | 0:01:10 | 0:01:14
and entertainment scenes, as they
make their way into the main event. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:17
First of all, before we get our
first guest, let's take a lack at | 0:01:17 | 0:01:22
some of the amazing sports moments
of 2017 -- take a look. | 0:01:22 | 0:01:29
Some of the amazing memories of 2017
which will be celebrated here | 0:02:31 | 0:02:34
tonight in Liverpool at the Echo
Arena at this year's Sports | 0:02:34 | 0:02:38
Personality of the Year where, as
you can see, the stars have really | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
come out.
We are here with England football | 0:02:40 | 0:02:45
manager Gareth Southgate. Welcome.
Are you looking forward to a big | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
night ahead? Yes, fantastic, always
a brilliant event. This year | 0:02:47 | 0:02:52
obviously we have got a junior
international team well represented | 0:02:52 | 0:02:56
as well so fantastic experience for
them to come here. Two of them both | 0:02:56 | 0:03:00
world champions. I guess the big
question is, next year, 01, will the | 0:03:00 | 0:03:06
sporting highlight be England
lifting the World Cup? We were | 0:03:06 | 0:03:09
saying if we have got lots of no
more nations for sports personality | 0:03:09 | 0:03:12
in the next year, we'll be in a
really good place, so that is our | 0:03:12 | 0:03:16
aim, we are really looking forward
to it and yes, it's starting to get | 0:03:16 | 0:03:20
really real now we have got the
draw. Were you happy with the draw? | 0:03:20 | 0:03:25
Yes. I think because we are one of
the second seeds, the way it works, | 0:03:25 | 0:03:31
you get two teams you are probably
going to be favourites against and | 0:03:31 | 0:03:35
play one team ranked higher, so it's
in our hands now. | 0:03:35 | 0:03:39
Also what I would like to know,
obviously footballers up for | 0:03:39 | 0:03:44
tonight's award, Harry Kane, will
you be getting your mobile out and | 0:03:44 | 0:03:47
voting for him tonight? There are
some really good people. I've met a | 0:03:47 | 0:03:51
couple of the other guys who've had
incredible years as well. So a lot | 0:03:51 | 0:03:56
of world champions. It's a high bar.
Great for Harry that he's in there, | 0:03:56 | 0:04:02
he's had a fantastic season. From
your point of view, we were talking | 0:04:02 | 0:04:06
whilst watching the highlights, you
have never seen this before? No, not | 0:04:06 | 0:04:09
this close. You know, goodness me,
I'm looking at some of the names | 0:04:09 | 0:04:15
1960, I wasn't quite around for
that, but it's such an iconic | 0:04:15 | 0:04:19
trophy, great to see nit the flesh.
It's amazing. Thank you very much | 0:04:19 | 0:04:22
for talking to us. We hope you enjoy
the evening. One of the names on | 0:04:22 | 0:04:27
there I'm absolutely certain is Sir
Steve Redgrave and if we look down | 0:04:27 | 0:04:30
the carpet, there he is, the big man
standing next to Annabel. | 0:04:30 | 0:04:35
I'm joined by previous winner Steve
Redgrave. What year was it when you | 0:04:35 | 0:04:39
won? 2000 Just after the Sydney
Olympics. Does it feel a long time | 0:04:39 | 0:04:45
ago? A very long time ago. That was
my last year of competing of 25, the | 0:04:45 | 0:04:51
last 17 years have gone reasonably
quickly. Obviously you have been | 0:04:51 | 0:04:54
there, so what will the contenders
be feeling tonight and how important | 0:04:54 | 0:04:59
is it to win? I was nominated a
couple of times before, so it's | 0:04:59 | 0:05:06
excitement, is it going to be me, oh
God what am I going to say if I do | 0:05:06 | 0:05:11
win, and the year that I did win so
they tell me, just afterwards, it | 0:05:11 | 0:05:19
was very one-sided on my side and
everyone knew they was going to win | 0:05:19 | 0:05:23
apart from myself that was sitting
there extremely nervous. I spoke | 0:05:23 | 0:05:30
reasonably well but forgot to
mention my wife. Never forget to | 0:05:30 | 0:05:33
mention your wife. Not such a good
thing when she's your team doctor as | 0:05:33 | 0:05:36
well. But no, it was a great evening
and what a thrill to win that | 0:05:36 | 0:05:40
trophy. For a lot of sportsmen and
women, this sort of thing doesn't | 0:05:40 | 0:05:46
come necessarily naturally to them
walking up and down the red carpet. | 0:05:46 | 0:05:49
I guess you are a bit more used to
it now? I've been on two or three, | 0:05:49 | 0:05:54
but sports people tend to be more
introverted, related to the actors | 0:05:54 | 0:06:00
and performers, they tend to be more
extroverted. There is a crossover | 0:06:00 | 0:06:05
either way but most sports people
tend to be more combiet and reserved | 0:06:05 | 0:06:08
in some ways. Are we allowed to ask
you who you might think will win | 0:06:08 | 0:06:15
tonight? There is two I wouldn't
mind winning, AJ being one and Adam | 0:06:15 | 0:06:20
Peaty being the other. They've both
had fantastic years and one thing | 0:06:20 | 0:06:24
that I always try and say is that
sports personality should be about | 0:06:24 | 0:06:29
what you've actually done in that
year, not what you did in a | 0:06:29 | 0:06:32
lifetime. Maybe my award was more
lifetime achievement than in my one | 0:06:32 | 0:06:39
year. Very well deserved it was
anyway. Thank you very much for | 0:06:39 | 0:06:42
stopping to talk to us. Have a
lovely evening. Pleasure. And you. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:46
One of the great things about
standing here is that everybody | 0:06:46 | 0:06:49
wants to stop and have a photograph
taken. That's the first time you | 0:06:49 | 0:06:53
have seen it? Yes. We were competing
in the Invictus Games in Toronto, | 0:06:53 | 0:07:00
but it's a special night be invited
along. It's going to be amazing. | 0:07:00 | 0:07:04
What were the Invictus Games like.
It looked amazing? It was. The | 0:07:04 | 0:07:09
atmosphere was incredible. I
competed in the 100 metres, shot | 0:07:09 | 0:07:13
putt and discus and the atmosphere
for every event was invisible. The | 0:07:13 | 0:07:18
support was second to none. So much
work of the Invictus Games is down | 0:07:18 | 0:07:23
to Prince Harry of course, have you
had a wedding invite? That would be | 0:07:23 | 0:07:26
nice. No, that would be nice but we
are obviously all in training | 0:07:26 | 0:07:31
already for Sydney next year so we
have got the trials in April then | 0:07:31 | 0:07:34
the selection process. We find out
in May whether we are going to | 0:07:34 | 0:07:38
Sydney next year, but I think it
will be around the time of the Royal | 0:07:38 | 0:07:42
Wedding, so you never know! All the
best and good luck. Happy customers, | 0:07:42 | 0:07:49
because you had a photo take within
the trophy too. | 0:07:49 | 0:07:52
Annabel, back to you.
Tonight is a celebration of sport | 0:07:52 | 0:07:57
but, as we mentioned, it's also a
celebration about professional | 0:07:57 | 0:08:02
athletes winning medals but also
those that don't always get | 0:08:02 | 0:08:05
mentioned and recognised. The
volunteers at grass roots levels. | 0:08:05 | 0:08:09
Tonight we celebrate them as well
and particularly a very special | 0:08:09 | 0:08:14
coach in Crosby. | 0:08:14 | 0:08:25
I'm Pamela and I'm in Liverpool to
say thank you to a special lady for | 0:08:26 | 0:08:31
her contribution to grass roots
netball. Let's go and meet her. | 0:08:31 | 0:08:38
You have been pretty amazing, doing
so much for grass roots netball. | 0:08:53 | 0:08:57
This is so great. Oh, my God. I've
come the say thank you so much for | 0:08:57 | 0:09:02
everything you are doing and all the
girls here look like they are having | 0:09:02 | 0:09:06
a great time. Hello! This is our
junior netball club, the under-13 | 0:09:06 | 0:09:16
section. We are in our fourth year,
started off with five girls, now | 0:09:16 | 0:09:21
we've got 95. Amazing. I hear you
are coaching Monday, Tuesday, | 0:09:21 | 0:09:26
witnesses, Thursday? Yes. | 0:09:26 | 0:09:31
I didn't have the opportunities to
get involved with as much netball | 0:09:34 | 0:09:38
when I was younger until I was sort
of 16, 17, so to give these girls | 0:09:38 | 0:09:43
the opportunity now and to give my
two daughters the opportunity to | 0:09:43 | 0:09:46
play and get involved in netball at
a younger age just makes me so happy | 0:09:46 | 0:09:50
to see them and get the parents'
feedback to say how much they love | 0:09:50 | 0:09:55
netball and how much they love being
part of the club and how much | 0:09:55 | 0:09:58
they've made new friends. It makes
it all worthwhile. | 0:09:58 | 0:10:05
She's got so much passion,
enthusiasm and I tell her all the | 0:10:05 | 0:10:10
time, I wish we could bottle it, we
need so much more people like | 0:10:10 | 0:10:14
Michelle for community sport in this
country to really grow and develop | 0:10:14 | 0:10:17
more. A bit on the angle... That's
it. | 0:10:17 | 0:10:24 | |
It's absolutely amazing to have Pam
ham la here tonight with us in | 0:10:24 | 0:10:33
Crosby -- Pamela. To be recognised,
I'm pretty gobsmacked actually, | 0:10:33 | 0:10:38
pretty speechless about it all, it's
absolutely amazing. | 0:10:38 | 0:10:45
With me now, the Tottenham and
England striker, Harry Kane and of | 0:10:49 | 0:10:53
course one of this evening's
contenders for the award for sports | 0:10:53 | 0:10:57
pers that willty of the year. How
chuffed were you to be nominated for | 0:10:57 | 0:11:00
it? It was amazing. Something I'm
extremely proud of. A bit of a | 0:11:00 | 0:11:06
surprise, I have to say, but really
excited to be here and looking | 0:11:06 | 0:11:09
forward to the event. You know the
last footballer to win this award, | 0:11:09 | 0:11:14
Ryan Giggs? Ryan Giggs, yes. You
have got to do that? I know, yes, | 0:11:14 | 0:11:19
obviously Ryan Giggs was incredible,
done so much for the game, so to be | 0:11:19 | 0:11:25
nominated is amazing, of course I
would love to go on and win it and | 0:11:25 | 0:11:28
hold the trophy. Does it mean a lot
to you? You can win things | 0:11:28 | 0:11:33
professionally in your sports life
but what does it mean to win this | 0:11:33 | 0:11:36
award? It would be fantastic to be
appreciated by all of the public for | 0:11:36 | 0:11:40
all sports as well, it's something I
would be very proud of so yes, | 0:11:40 | 0:11:45
football's obviously my sport, but
I've always loved doing every sport | 0:11:45 | 0:11:48
when I was a kid growing up in
school as well. It's amazing to be | 0:11:48 | 0:11:51
here. You have captained England
recently which is a huge honour, I'm | 0:11:51 | 0:11:56
guessing? It is. Again, as a kid
growing up, that's what you dream of | 0:11:56 | 0:12:00
doing. To have done that and to have
scored as well on the debut, it was | 0:12:00 | 0:12:08
incredible, a moment I'll never
forget. We have had the youth teams | 0:12:08 | 0:12:13
coming through earlier. They've had
a fantastic year. Do you think they | 0:12:13 | 0:12:16
can go forward into 2018 with such
success? Yes, hopefully. They've | 0:12:16 | 0:12:21
been fantastic. I'm incredibly proud
to be English and to see what | 0:12:21 | 0:12:25
they've been doing. Yes, it only
drives us players to try to do the | 0:12:25 | 0:12:29
same. It's great to see them here
tonight and hopefully 2018 will be | 0:12:29 | 0:12:34
even better. We wish you all the
luck, have a fantastic night. Thank | 0:12:34 | 0:12:37
you for speaking to us. Thank you.
Roger and I have just bumped into | 0:12:37 | 0:12:41
one of the 12 and only Scots to be
nominated for this year's Sports | 0:12:41 | 0:12:46
Personality of the Year award. How
does it feel? It's amazing. I never | 0:12:46 | 0:12:51
expected to be nominated. It's such
an honour. It feels unreal to be | 0:12:51 | 0:12:56
here and to get a nomination. It's
crazy. You are looking fabulous, | 0:12:56 | 0:13:00
would you agree tonight? You are
known for having your cool purple | 0:13:00 | 0:13:06
hair, always looking fashionable.
Was tonight a hard choice? I have | 0:13:06 | 0:13:10
five with me. Some were quirky and
they all persuaded me to go with the | 0:13:10 | 0:13:15
elegant one so I'm happy you are
saying I look good because I wasn't | 0:13:15 | 0:13:19
sure. Your train is long on that
dress, you need someone to carry it. | 0:13:19 | 0:13:24
He's not having any of it is he? I'm
a bit too tall. You came close to | 0:13:24 | 0:13:30
giving up in 2014 didn't yourself I
bet you are relieved you didn't? Oh, | 0:13:30 | 0:13:35
it's amazing. I became word champion
and thought, this is giving back to | 0:13:35 | 0:13:41
everyone that supported med through
the bad time. To come out the other | 0:13:41 | 0:13:44
end and now be nominated for this
award, if you would have said that | 0:13:44 | 0:13:47
four years ago, I would have told
you you were making it up. How tough | 0:13:47 | 0:13:51
is that. Sam you will probably
appreciate this with your hockey | 0:13:51 | 0:13:56
background, you must have times when
you feel very alone and down. Is it | 0:13:56 | 0:13:59
very difficult to drag yourself back
up? Yes, of course, everyone has bad | 0:13:59 | 0:14:07
times, where it's hard to get up in
the morning, especially after Sochi, | 0:14:07 | 0:14:11
but you have got to focus on
everyone supporting you, sending you | 0:14:11 | 0:14:16
the love. You have little goals to
reach every day, that is what keeps | 0:14:16 | 0:14:20
me going. Sochi for you, you train,
you compete, get up at 6am for that | 0:14:20 | 0:14:26
Olympic moment. What things have you
got in store coming up for the next | 0:14:26 | 0:14:31
politician, you have just had
selection, things like that? Yes, | 0:14:31 | 0:14:34
I'm so excited, only got told this
week. They were never going to not | 0:14:34 | 0:14:38
pick you? You never know! I'm just
so excited. I want to go out and | 0:14:38 | 0:14:45
enjoy the Olympics. Sochi was
horrible, I didn't enjoy it, I got | 0:14:45 | 0:14:50
myself in should have good shape and
I know I can win but mainly I want | 0:14:50 | 0:14:53
to enjoy it band happy in front of
the home crowd and not have a | 0:14:53 | 0:14:57
miserable face on the whole time so
I'm looking forward to getting out | 0:14:57 | 0:15:00
there. We wish you well. Thank you
very much indeed. Elise, one to have | 0:15:00 | 0:15:07
12 nominees. Thank you. We have
heard from Harry Kane and Elise, now | 0:15:07 | 0:15:14
it's Johnny Peacock.
Fresh from last night which was a | 0:15:14 | 0:15:20
big night on celebrity Come Dancing.
How was that, the whole experience, | 0:15:20 | 0:15:23
what was it like for you in
Strictly? It was a roller coaster, | 0:15:23 | 0:15:28
absolutely incredible. There are
many ups, a few downs, the training | 0:15:28 | 0:15:32
can be tricky, but it was so much
fun. I think the only bad thing is | 0:15:32 | 0:15:35
that I didn't get to enjoy the party
as much as I wanted to because I had | 0:15:35 | 0:15:39
to be up to come here. You had to
save yourself? To a point, yes. We | 0:15:39 | 0:15:43
are grateful for that. It's very
different though isn't it that kind | 0:15:43 | 0:15:47
of challenge because you are used to
a sporting challenge but you are | 0:15:47 | 0:15:50
doing it for yourself then really
aren't you, you've got a partner | 0:15:50 | 0:15:53
this time? Yes, exactly, that's it.
Oti was there helping me. It's | 0:15:53 | 0:15:58
weird, you don't want to let them
down. When you are on the track it's | 0:15:58 | 0:16:01
just you and obviously you can let
down your country but really the | 0:16:01 | 0:16:05
pressure is just on you. Whereas
going out there, I don't want to let | 0:16:05 | 0:16:10
Oti down. There is a lot of nerves.
So far out of my comfort zone. Are | 0:16:10 | 0:16:14
you surprised how well you did then
because you did well and lasted | 0:16:14 | 0:16:17
well? That's down to Oti and her
amazing choreography and he pushed | 0:16:17 | 0:16:23
me. She did amazingly well. She was
meant to be here today, where is | 0:16:23 | 0:16:27
she? She enjoyed the party a little
bit. Ssh she might be lying in bed | 0:16:27 | 0:16:34
somewhere! We should talk a bit
about sport as well and you have | 0:16:34 | 0:16:37
been nominated for this. How do you
feel? Absolutely incredible. The | 0:16:37 | 0:16:45
biggest award for a sportsman. It's
such an honour. The names that go on | 0:16:45 | 0:16:52
the list is insane so be in the mix
is incredible. Do you get time to | 0:16:52 | 0:16:56
rest because you have had a full-on
year. What is Christmas going to | 0:16:56 | 0:16:59
mean? I'm going to have a couple of
weeks to chill out. Christmas at | 0:16:59 | 0:17:03
mums, New Years at my girlfriend
Sally's parent, so that will be | 0:17:03 | 0:17:07
nice, but lots of sleep, a bit of
alcohol, so yes, I need to stop | 0:17:07 | 0:17:12
eating so much though because I've
already put on weight. Really, doing | 0:17:12 | 0:17:15
Strictly you have put on weight?
Definitely. It's not as intense, | 0:17:15 | 0:17:21
it's much more mentally exhausting,
I had to put down a few cakes! Thank | 0:17:21 | 0:17:27
you so much, we are glad you made it
here tonight and good luck. Thank | 0:17:27 | 0:17:30
you. Thank you.
From one athlete at one end of the | 0:17:30 | 0:17:36
carpet rapidly three of it have made
it to the other end, Steve Cram | 0:17:36 | 0:17:42
Paula Radcliffe and Dame Tanni
Grey-Thompson are here. We were | 0:17:42 | 0:17:46
talking to Johnny Peacock, he's been
one of the great role models for the | 0:17:46 | 0:17:51
para-athletics team? Yes. He
delivers when it counts. Winning | 0:17:51 | 0:17:55
gold in London was phenomenal. To do
it later in Rio with all the | 0:17:55 | 0:18:00
pressure, men's amputee's sprinting
is one of the deepest classes out | 0:18:00 | 0:18:03
there and to come back after year of
injury and to win was amazing, he so | 0:18:03 | 0:18:12
deserves to be on the list. When you
are sitting in the commentary box | 0:18:12 | 0:18:16
and Paula as well, you must take
great pride in the way Paralympics | 0:18:16 | 0:18:21
has come on in recent years, it's
very much on a level with the | 0:18:21 | 0:18:28
able-bodied teams? As Tanni was
saying, in all sports, regular or | 0:18:28 | 0:18:35
Paralympicsneeds its heroes, Johnny
is one of our, Tanni was for a long | 0:18:35 | 0:18:39
time. We have been able to integrate
the Paralympic events, particularly | 0:18:39 | 0:18:44
in athletics. We had the IPC champs
held in this stadium just before and | 0:18:44 | 0:18:51
you saw full stadia for both
Championships which is testimony to, | 0:18:51 | 0:18:56
I guess, what the public appreciate.
They're watching top level sport. It | 0:18:56 | 0:19:01
doesn't matter whether it's a
paralympian or able-bodied athlete, | 0:19:01 | 0:19:06
they understand they're watching
people at top of their game which is | 0:19:06 | 0:19:10
why they come here and watch it on
TV as well. Paula, one of the | 0:19:10 | 0:19:15
contenders this evening who isn't
here, Mo Farah, how amazing has he | 0:19:15 | 0:19:19
been now that he's brought his track
to an end? He's closing one chapter | 0:19:19 | 0:19:24
and closing one very successful
chapter, so successful that we | 0:19:24 | 0:19:29
actually find ourselves looking back
this year and thinking, he didn't | 0:19:29 | 0:19:32
quite match what he did in the years
before that because that was | 0:19:32 | 0:19:35
outstanding to be able to put those
doubles back-to-back year after | 0:19:35 | 0:19:39
year. I think he's now probably
relishing the challenge of the going | 0:19:39 | 0:19:44
into something new that he needs to
learn, find his feet a bit and give | 0:19:44 | 0:19:50
himself something else to attack
that motivates him that bit more | 0:19:50 | 0:19:53
now. It was amazing having the
worlds back in London. How amazing | 0:19:53 | 0:19:57
was that to see everyone back in the
spirit of the Paralympics? It was | 0:19:57 | 0:20:01
really special on so many levels.
Athletics had been through a rough | 0:20:01 | 0:20:05
time so to bring it back to a
country that really supports and | 0:20:05 | 0:20:09
understands athletics and fills the
stadiums, that gave it a real boost | 0:20:09 | 0:20:13
in. Britain it was brilliant to see
performances like the relay boys | 0:20:13 | 0:20:17
just come through and grab that and
just really kind of reignite all of | 0:20:17 | 0:20:21
that passion that we saw in 2012 and
give people a chance to live it | 0:20:21 | 0:20:26
again.
Thank you all very much inteed for | 0:20:26 | 0:20:28
talking to us. We are grateful to
all of you. Enjoy the evening. There | 0:20:28 | 0:20:33
is no doubt who is the fastest
contender for Sports Personality of | 0:20:33 | 0:20:40
the Year award, 2017. It is of
course Lewis Hamilton. He won his | 0:20:40 | 0:20:43
fourth world title this year and he
also won the admiration of another | 0:20:43 | 0:20:48
motor sport giant, Sir Jackie
Stuart. | 0:20:48 | 0:20:53
I think 2017 has been the best year
for Lewis Hamilton with regards to | 0:20:53 | 0:20:57
winning in the manner in which he's
done it and so forth. For me, the | 0:20:57 | 0:21:02
most enjoyable race I ever saw Lewis
Hamilton running was one that he | 0:21:02 | 0:21:06
didn't win, in fact it was the Grand
Prix in Barcelona where he came | 0:21:06 | 0:21:12
through the very back, started in
the pit lane in fact, came through | 0:21:12 | 0:21:16
and didn't get on the podium but
nearly did. That made the race | 0:21:16 | 0:21:21
because he was just chopping
everybody off, as he went along. He | 0:21:21 | 0:21:27
has a huge gift of natural talent.
What you have got to do is match | 0:21:27 | 0:21:31
that natural talent with what is up
here in the brain cells and that | 0:21:31 | 0:21:36
he's developed as he's gone along.
This year is the best example of | 0:21:36 | 0:21:40
that. I think these are the two big
assets you need. | 0:21:40 | 0:21:46
A magnificent sight from the air.
The Echo Arena here in Liverpool | 0:21:49 | 0:21:53
ahead of this year's Sports
Personality of the Year. Here on the | 0:21:53 | 0:21:57
red carpet the famous faces keep
coming. Rebecca Adlington is with | 0:21:57 | 0:22:03
us, Adam Peaty is amongst the
contenders tonight. Best of luck. | 0:22:03 | 0:22:08
Phenomenal isn't he? Unbelievable.
His Olympic success is one thing but | 0:22:08 | 0:22:13
to back that up and this is his
fourth year nominated, he keeps | 0:22:13 | 0:22:17
climbing the ladder and doing better
every year so hopefully tonight he | 0:22:17 | 0:22:20
can be there on the stage. Given how
amazing he is, do you find it | 0:22:20 | 0:22:25
frustrating that so many people do
swim, why doesn't it punch through | 0:22:25 | 0:22:32
and have a swimmer as the sport s
pers nal Sports Personality of the | 0:22:32 | 0:22:38
Year? Anthony Joshua is such a big
name, for example, because he's a | 0:22:38 | 0:22:43
huge sport, we are still a minority
sport that is a bit like your mum | 0:22:43 | 0:22:47
and dad in the stands and that's
pretty much it. It's bound to happen | 0:22:47 | 0:22:52
when you have a small sport but
Adam's had a fantastic year. For him | 0:22:52 | 0:22:57
it would be an honour to be the
winner but he's honoured to be | 0:22:57 | 0:23:02
nominated. You look stunning
tonight. Where is it from and why | 0:23:02 | 0:23:08
did you choose the jumpsuit? Good
choice? Look at these. Two goal | 0:23:08 | 0:23:13
medals and jumpsuits as well, I feel
left out. Where is this one from? | 0:23:13 | 0:23:19
Tall girls can wear jumpsuits so why
not. We have the awkward thing | 0:23:19 | 0:23:25
whether we went for one or two
kisses but we went for a fist bump. | 0:23:25 | 0:23:29
Joining and Yang. The new girl band.
I can't sing, can you? No. There we | 0:23:29 | 0:23:34
go! That makes three of us. At least
we have something in common. Thank | 0:23:34 | 0:23:38
you very much for stopping to talk
to us, we are really grateful. | 0:23:38 | 0:23:43
The world of cycling is always very
well represented at this awards | 0:23:43 | 0:23:49
event and this year's contender is
Chris Froome who won his fourth Tour | 0:23:49 | 0:23:53
de France this year, as well as the
tour de-Spain. One man who | 0:23:53 | 0:23:57
particularly thinks he should get
this award is a previous award | 0:23:57 | 0:24:00
winner himself, Sir Chris Hoy. | 0:24:00 | 0:24:07
I think Chris Froome, you'd be hard
pushed to say he's not the greatest | 0:24:07 | 0:24:13
of his generation. Four times Tour
de France champion, welter champion. | 0:24:13 | 0:24:18
His consistency. The way that he
deals with everything that is thrown | 0:24:18 | 0:24:25
at him, I can't think of anybody
would rate above him. He's the best | 0:24:25 | 0:24:29
of the best. There are so many
variables in the Tour de France, so | 0:24:29 | 0:24:36
many things can go wrong. It's an
incredibly difficult thing to | 0:24:36 | 0:24:41
control. Therefore consistency at
that level in that type of event is | 0:24:41 | 0:24:45
super impressive. It's a huge
achievement what he has managed to | 0:24:45 | 0:24:49
do over the last four or five years.
To win the Vuelta as well as the | 0:24:49 | 0:24:55
Tour de France this year, incredible
achievement. I think he would | 0:24:55 | 0:25:00
probably win sports personality in
any number of different nations | 0:25:00 | 0:25:02
around the world this year. We have
just bumped into this gentleman who | 0:25:02 | 0:25:10
has probably got by far the most
glamorous or revealing outfit of the | 0:25:10 | 0:25:16
night. It is Speedo Mick. Tell
everybody what you do. After | 0:25:16 | 0:25:26
swimming the channel a few years
ago, I've been fundraising, going to | 0:25:26 | 0:25:32
football games, walking to France,
walking to Wembley. I've just been | 0:25:32 | 0:25:37
fundraising basically for three
years. And you've done a fantastic | 0:25:37 | 0:25:41
job. I was at the Liverpool Everton
derby on Sunday and it was snowing, | 0:25:41 | 0:25:48
and he was still there in his
Speedos! How do you get through | 0:25:48 | 0:25:54
those cold days? It's a challenge,
and I love a challenge. Lots of | 0:25:54 | 0:25:59
coffee. Like you say it's part of
the fun racing stuff. If I'm shaking | 0:25:59 | 0:26:06
a bucket with my clothes on, you
don't get as much money. We've just | 0:26:06 | 0:26:12
been talking to Rebecca Adlington,
famous gold medal winning Olympic | 0:26:12 | 0:26:16
swimmer. Whereabouts are talked to a
world champion swimmer. None of them | 0:26:16 | 0:26:21
are dressed quite like you tonight.
Fantastic. Annabel is talking to | 0:26:21 | 0:26:25
Adam Peaty. I don't think he's
wearing his Speedos! That gentleman | 0:26:25 | 0:26:34
down there is in his Speedos, you
look a bit overdressed! Maybe if I | 0:26:34 | 0:26:39
get nominated next year that's my
next outfit. You've had a fantastic | 0:26:39 | 0:26:44
year so you must feel overwhelmed to
be up for this award. Absolutely. | 0:26:44 | 0:26:48
World Championships and the
Europeans last night. You quickly | 0:26:48 | 0:26:56
gave your gold medal away to
somebody in the crowd. I saw a | 0:26:56 | 0:27:01
British flag and you don't see many
British flags when you go abroad. I | 0:27:01 | 0:27:05
thought, I want to do something for
them to say thank you for | 0:27:05 | 0:27:09
supporting. This girl I gave my gold
two, she was starstruck -- I gave my | 0:27:09 | 0:27:16
gold-medal to her. You've won the
gold medal, but hopefully far her it | 0:27:16 | 0:27:22
will change her world and inspire
her for many years. That is a really | 0:27:22 | 0:27:27
lovely moment. You are with your
girlfriend Millie. Where you out | 0:27:27 | 0:27:32
there watching? I wasn't, I was at
work! You try and support as much as | 0:27:32 | 0:27:38
you can but you're not involved in
the world of sport yourself? Sadly | 0:27:38 | 0:27:44
not. It's a very good balance. I can
do what I need to do in the pool and | 0:27:44 | 0:27:49
come home and relax and completely
chill out. Are you going to relax | 0:27:49 | 0:27:53
now? Yes, we go on holiday after
Christmas. This is my only time of | 0:27:53 | 0:27:59
year where I can chill out and start
to restart the engine next year. | 0:27:59 | 0:28:04
It's a big year, Commonwealth Games,
European long course championship, | 0:28:04 | 0:28:08
then it's the worlds and then the
Olympics against upright when you | 0:28:08 | 0:28:11
stop in the middle of training. | 0:28:11 | 0:28:16
When you stop in the middle of
training, do you have to stop eating | 0:28:16 | 0:28:20
the amount you are eating? Yes. It
is 15,000 calories a day, and it | 0:28:20 | 0:28:29
goes down to a leaf. Thank you very
much, good luck tonight and have a | 0:28:29 | 0:28:33
great evening. Adam Peaty talking to
Annabel. We wish him luck to night, | 0:28:33 | 0:28:40
he's one of the 12 contenders.
6:45pm the programme is live on BBC | 0:28:40 | 0:28:46
One. You can vote for your
favourite. Last year tennis one with | 0:28:46 | 0:28:50
Andy Murray taking home his third
award. This year the sport has | 0:28:50 | 0:28:54
Johanna Konta representing the
female game. She got to the | 0:28:54 | 0:29:02
semifinals of Wimbledon which was
the first time in a long time. | 0:29:02 | 0:29:05
Amongst the legions of her fans
is... The last person to do it, | 0:29:05 | 0:29:10
Virginia Wade. Johanna Konta had a
tremendous year. Maybe better even | 0:29:10 | 0:29:18
than she anticipated, although you
never know. Obviously everyone is | 0:29:18 | 0:29:22
dreaming of coming into the top
handful in the world and she got | 0:29:22 | 0:29:27
herself to number four. So I think
she achieved every one of the goals | 0:29:27 | 0:29:33
she could have set for the year. To
win a big tournament like Miami, to | 0:29:33 | 0:29:39
get to the semifinals of Wimbledon,
and to do as well as she did in | 0:29:39 | 0:29:43
Australia. That was a year to
remember. I know she had some | 0:29:43 | 0:29:47
injuries as the year progressed but
as long as she can stay fit, listen, | 0:29:47 | 0:29:54
she's got as much chance as anybody
else. Women's tennis is there | 0:29:54 | 0:30:00
waiting for somebody to take the
reins and climb on up. Virginia Wade | 0:30:00 | 0:30:09
singing the praises of Johanna
Konta. A couple of minutes ago we | 0:30:09 | 0:30:13
had two ladies in catsuits, both
with Olympic gold medals. Now we | 0:30:13 | 0:30:22
have two by Jungle by files. King of
the jungle! Yes indeed. We gave each | 0:30:22 | 0:30:32
other that look and said, we know
what you went through. When you meet | 0:30:32 | 0:30:35
someone who's been in the jungle we
can look at each other and say, we | 0:30:35 | 0:30:40
know. There's a gang of us who know
how tough it is and how much fun it | 0:30:40 | 0:30:45
is. Do you ever eat rice and beans?
I hate rice and beans. He has | 0:30:45 | 0:30:51
kangaroo instead. Tell us about
Jonathan Rea. He is closing on your | 0:30:51 | 0:30:56
all-time career number of wins. Next
year I'm sure he will smash the | 0:30:56 | 0:31:01
record. I'm a big fan of Jonathan,
I'm here to support him. Hopefully | 0:31:01 | 0:31:07
everyone will vote for him. He's a
good lad and a great rider. What | 0:31:07 | 0:31:13
makes him so good? He's got the
aggression, the consistency, the | 0:31:13 | 0:31:20
will to win. He's good in wet
weather, dry weather, all sorts. | 0:31:20 | 0:31:24
He's very professional about the way
he goes about his business. He ticks | 0:31:24 | 0:31:28
all the boxes. You mentioned you
think he's a great talent. Do you | 0:31:28 | 0:31:36
think he is going to break your
world record for the amount of | 0:31:36 | 0:31:40
career wins? He'll break them. I'm
not bitter one bit! He's a good | 0:31:40 | 0:31:46
guys. Thank you for talking to us.
He's pretty quick on two wheels. | 0:31:46 | 0:31:52
Here's a bloke who was pretty quick
on two legs, Michael Johnson. I'm | 0:31:52 | 0:31:58
with Michael Johnson, we've been
arguing about how many times he's | 0:31:58 | 0:32:05
one. -- he's won. I have one trophy.
Tonight you can come in and kick | 0:32:05 | 0:32:18
back and enjoy it. I've got to do a
bit of presenting tonight. I'll be | 0:32:18 | 0:32:25
enjoying it, it's all is a great
shows. I think a lot of people, | 0:32:25 | 0:32:30
sportsmen and women, obviously they
want to win in their own sports but | 0:32:30 | 0:32:33
winning this is important. It's also
be history. If you look back over | 0:32:33 | 0:32:43
winners of previous years, there is
some amazing names there. Roger | 0:32:43 | 0:32:51
Federer has won it this year. His
comeback last year was unbelievable. | 0:32:51 | 0:32:56
I actually have to admit I said
about a year or two ago, Roger, it's | 0:32:56 | 0:33:01
time to let it go. He proved me
wrong. That spurred him on! Do you | 0:33:01 | 0:33:10
have a highlight? The World
Championships were amazing this | 0:33:10 | 0:33:12
year. A lot of sad moments with
Usain Bolt. Do you have a highlight? | 0:33:12 | 0:33:19
I think those championships proved,
obviously a sad moment to Usain but | 0:33:19 | 0:33:25
it proved the sport is bigger than
one athlete because it was still an | 0:33:25 | 0:33:28
amazing championship. The thing
about Usain is, if you ask anyone | 0:33:28 | 0:33:37
who won, they will ask what Usain
Bolt there? He won it. It won't have | 0:33:37 | 0:33:42
any effect on his legacy. His legacy
is amazing, great sprinter ever. The | 0:33:42 | 0:33:49
world of athletics to my being
represented by Mo Farah, he's got a | 0:33:49 | 0:33:52
good chance. History hasn't been
kind to him over the years with this | 0:33:52 | 0:33:57
thing, so I'm not quite sure. He did
have an amazing season. He should be | 0:33:57 | 0:34:05
right there and have a really good
chance to win it. His season was | 0:34:05 | 0:34:10
amazing. He went out with a bang and
he would absolutely be deserving of | 0:34:10 | 0:34:15
its. Thank you. Have a wonderful
night. Roger is going to tell us a | 0:34:15 | 0:34:21
bit about a hero who lives a bit
more locally. We were just talking, | 0:34:21 | 0:34:32
you do 40 metres sprints with the
Great Britain hockey team. How many | 0:34:32 | 0:34:39
seconds is that? It would normally
be 20 out, 20 back. I would like to | 0:34:39 | 0:34:44
say I was the fastest. When Holly
scored that last goal, even though | 0:34:44 | 0:34:50
I'm not the fastest in the squad,
but on that picture it looks like I | 0:34:50 | 0:34:55
am. We've talked a lot about the
minority sports this evening. For | 0:34:55 | 0:34:59
hockey, what did it mean, that
Olympic win, the profiler tat. It on | 0:34:59 | 0:35:05
10pm at night, prime time. What has
it done for hockey? It's huge. It | 0:35:05 | 0:35:14
started off with the gold medals,
the acknowledgement in front of | 0:35:14 | 0:35:17
millions. It made people say hockey
is a fast, competitive sport. To be | 0:35:17 | 0:35:25
here amongst the sporting's best
both past and current, it's amazing. | 0:35:25 | 0:35:31
We had our captain Kate nominated,
hopefully we'll catch her. She was | 0:35:31 | 0:35:34
amazing as well. There's a boxer
nominated tonight, his name is | 0:35:34 | 0:35:40
Anthony Joshua. He's not here.
There's another big guy, Tony | 0:35:40 | 0:35:44
Bellew. Liverpool boxer of course.
Is that a tinge of blue for your | 0:35:44 | 0:35:53
beloved Everton? Yes, if I can sneak
it in and get it in, yes! There was | 0:35:53 | 0:36:00
a possibility you would have been
fighting David Haye tonight. Yes, as | 0:36:00 | 0:36:07
you can see I'm here to help out.
But it really but what can you do, | 0:36:07 | 0:36:11
the show must go on. Anthony Joshua,
who I know it is a rival of yours. A | 0:36:11 | 0:36:20
rival friend. He's got a good
chance, hasn't he? I think he | 0:36:20 | 0:36:24
deserves it. It would be fantastic
to see. You described him as a | 0:36:24 | 0:36:29
friend. If you at some point had to
fight him, how tough is that? I | 0:36:29 | 0:36:36
went. You're not going to give us an
exclusive tonight? Have you seen the | 0:36:36 | 0:36:42
size of him?! Do you want to fight
probably not. I wouldn't fight | 0:36:42 | 0:36:51
Speedo Mick over there. Your fight
has been rescheduled for make. O2 | 0:36:51 | 0:36:57
Arena. I've missed being back at
work. Ultimately I made | 0:36:57 | 0:37:02
prizefighter, I enjoy fighting. Time
off is no good for nobody. Although | 0:37:02 | 0:37:07
Eure prizefighter, I've heard you
talk before about the fact it's a | 0:37:07 | 0:37:11
job for you and you want to go to
work and get home safe. That is 100% | 0:37:11 | 0:37:16
correct. It's just a job. As much as
I love boxing and it's the only | 0:37:16 | 0:37:20
thing I truly understand inside and
out, you've got to understand it is | 0:37:20 | 0:37:25
just a job. Once I come away from
that I'm just a normal nine to five | 0:37:25 | 0:37:30
lads. To have this here in
Liverpool, this event, it's great | 0:37:30 | 0:37:36
isn't it? It's massive, it's huge.
Our city is a fantastic city. It's | 0:37:36 | 0:37:43
got a wealth of heritage, it is
steeped in glory. We've got a lot of | 0:37:43 | 0:37:47
history from the football teams,
from all different sportsmen and | 0:37:47 | 0:37:52
women of every different ethnic
origin. We are a massive city and I | 0:37:52 | 0:37:57
think it's fantastic. It should be
here, we've had teams win Champions | 0:37:57 | 0:38:04
League. What team was that? It
doesn't matter what team it was! | 0:38:04 | 0:38:11
We've got a fantastic tradition with
sport. There's many more to come as | 0:38:11 | 0:38:18
well. The youth is coming through
also. Tony Bellew, proud Evertonian! | 0:38:18 | 0:38:28
Annabel teased us earlier about a
new local staff, Tony is one and so | 0:38:28 | 0:38:32
is Sam. Obviously as you've just
seen with Tony Bellew, this city has | 0:38:32 | 0:38:39
no shortage of sporting superstars.
In 2017 a new one emerged, golfer | 0:38:39 | 0:38:44
Tommy Fleetwood has had an
astonishing year. He became a | 0:38:44 | 0:38:49
champion, he became a husband and he
became a dad. Two wins, one | 0:38:49 | 0:38:59
marriage, one baby, and Europe's
number one golfer. | 0:38:59 | 0:39:11
MUSIC
It's not until now, getting home and | 0:39:11 | 0:39:22
sitting down, I'm like, what have we
done? Christmas coming up with a new | 0:39:22 | 0:39:28
baby and a new wife, and it's very
cool at the moment. But a year ago | 0:39:28 | 0:39:33
it was anything but cool. Tommy was
struggling. He got his best mate to | 0:39:33 | 0:39:38
Kathy and went back to his childhood
coach. It worked -- to caddy. You | 0:39:38 | 0:39:46
won't forget this year. Absolutely
not, this has been a heck of a year. | 0:39:46 | 0:39:54
We get an absolutely brilliant. He's
my best mate. He's a good lad. I've | 0:39:54 | 0:40:02
been found behind Bush is talking to
myself, but I love it. You can't get | 0:40:02 | 0:40:07
any better than this. From the Dubai
sunshine to the Cheshire snow, | 0:40:07 | 0:40:14
Tommy's stepsons have been among his
biggest supporters. Are you nervous | 0:40:14 | 0:40:19
watchers? I am quite good, I think.
But when he's doing well I get quite | 0:40:19 | 0:40:25
nervous. When he wins on Sunday I
can come back into school on Monday | 0:40:25 | 0:40:34
and everyone is talking about it,
especially the teachers. To have | 0:40:34 | 0:40:41
that many people that you're close
with around you, I can't thank them | 0:40:41 | 0:40:44
enough. An amazing year on course
and of course. It's been better than | 0:40:44 | 0:40:51
I could ever have hoped for. | 0:40:51 | 0:40:59
I'm very, very excited because I've
just found all my hockey girls | 0:41:04 | 0:41:08
looking gorgeous. It's like being on
that Team GB flight back home from | 0:41:08 | 0:41:16
Rio. Singing so much and they let us
sleep. I put it was you girls who | 0:41:16 | 0:41:24
started it! I recorded all of it!
I'm a bit under the weather! That's | 0:41:24 | 0:41:35
before the night has begun! So
ladies, you've just come back from | 0:41:35 | 0:41:40
New Zealand. Pretty new squad after
Rio, how's it going? Really good. We | 0:41:40 | 0:41:47
came forth and we were slightly
disappointed but new squad, everyone | 0:41:47 | 0:41:51
is getting a chance to get
international experience that it's | 0:41:51 | 0:41:54
been a really positive year.
Apparently they've all got a Airbnb | 0:41:54 | 0:42:02
tonight. We've got a lovely
apartment in Liverpool. It's my hen | 0:42:02 | 0:42:06
do this weekend so finishing it off
well! We are going to cross over to | 0:42:06 | 0:42:12
Annabel. I'm with one of the other
contenders for the awards night, | 0:42:12 | 0:42:17
Bianca Walkden. I wish I'd worn big
heels tonight! I should have known! | 0:42:17 | 0:42:23
I had to get my legs out and get the
hills and. You look fantastic. This | 0:42:23 | 0:42:29
is your home city, you must be
feeling so at home. I can't wait to | 0:42:29 | 0:42:33
go out there and hopefully all the
Scousers get behind me. Please vote | 0:42:33 | 0:42:38
for me. Honestly, I'm so overwhelmed
and trying to take it all in. When | 0:42:38 | 0:42:42
they announced your name on the
night you were tweeting that you | 0:42:42 | 0:42:45
were buzzing. It's so good it's
here, it's great the celebration of | 0:42:45 | 0:42:51
sport is seen outside of London and
in places like Liverpool because we | 0:42:51 | 0:42:56
had so many famous sports people.
100%. It to be in my hometown is | 0:42:56 | 0:43:02
amazing. You've got all the fighters
and the boxers, is just inside us to | 0:43:02 | 0:43:07
go and compete and win. Hopefully
Liverpool will get behind me | 0:43:07 | 0:43:11
tonight. I can't wait to see the
reception from everyone. You've had | 0:43:11 | 0:43:15
such a fantastic year. The last time
we met was just after the Olympics | 0:43:15 | 0:43:21
and bizarrely you were disappointed
with a bronze. This year has been | 0:43:21 | 0:43:27
fabulous. I've done OK. I was the
first one to get all four Grand Prix | 0:43:27 | 0:43:35
series and retain my world title.
For me that was just me getting up | 0:43:35 | 0:43:42
every day. I'm lucky enough to just
be here and I'm trying to take it | 0:43:42 | 0:43:47
all in because it's so overwhelming.
What are you going to do now? Are | 0:43:47 | 0:43:52
you taking a break over Christmas?
I've got training tomorrow or the | 0:43:52 | 0:43:58
day after. I can't have any pigs in
blankets over Christmas because I'm | 0:43:58 | 0:44:01
going to China on the 27th of
December. Can you enjoy yourself | 0:44:01 | 0:44:07
tonight? Of course. I can't let
Liverpool down! We wish you all the | 0:44:07 | 0:44:14
best. We were going to talk to Asha
Philip and Adam Gemili but it was | 0:44:14 | 0:44:20
hijacked by the hockey girls
reunion! Beth Tweddle is also with | 0:44:20 | 0:44:25
us. Looking back on your 2017, how
would you sum it up? It was really | 0:44:25 | 0:44:32
good. I got a European gold medal in
the 60 metres and a silver medal in | 0:44:32 | 0:44:37
London. These boys got gold which
I'm happy for. It's been a really | 0:44:37 | 0:44:44
good year for us this year. Adam,
the girls were willing it you over | 0:44:44 | 0:44:48
that line in the final, how much did
it mean to have them there with you? | 0:44:48 | 0:44:54
It was the best feeling to celebrate
together, especially doing it in | 0:44:54 | 0:44:58
London was brilliant, to become a
world champion. Usually the girls | 0:44:58 | 0:45:02
are successful at the relay and the
men hashed it up a bit but we | 0:45:02 | 0:45:05
managed to get a medal and celebrate
altogether. Beth, you are a veteran | 0:45:05 | 0:45:11
of this event, you must have been
many times but how lovely to have it | 0:45:11 | 0:45:15
in your home city. It is always a
nice way to end the year and a great | 0:45:15 | 0:45:20
way to celebrate what British sport
has done. But have it back in | 0:45:20 | 0:45:25
Liverpool, we last had it back in
2008. I'm really proud to show off | 0:45:25 | 0:45:30
what our city does. It's to see all
these different people from | 0:45:30 | 0:45:34
different sports who normally would
never meet. Yes. For some buzz it's | 0:45:34 | 0:45:39
a great way to catch up, meet up
with old friends. You see all the | 0:45:39 | 0:45:42
emerging stars coming through. What
these guys did in the summer was | 0:45:42 | 0:45:47
incredible. I was part of that team
willing you over the line. It was | 0:45:47 | 0:45:52
just amazing to watch. Thank you.
We're going to continue the | 0:45:52 | 0:45:57
athletics team at the other end of
the carpet. I'm with Dame Jessica | 0:45:57 | 0:46:02
Ennis-Hill. You look absolutely
gorgeous. It's so nice to have a | 0:46:02 | 0:46:07
chance to dress up. It is, yes.
Obviously just having my daughter | 0:46:07 | 0:46:11
I've been in slob out close for the
past few weeks and not been to | 0:46:11 | 0:46:17
anything special is this so it's
really exciting. Is this your first | 0:46:17 | 0:46:20
big night out? It is actually. I had
a mummy and ready day the other day | 0:46:20 | 0:46:27
but this is the first time I've left
her for a few hours. How are you | 0:46:27 | 0:46:33
feeling about that? She's happy and
settled with my mum so I'm OK. I'll | 0:46:33 | 0:46:38
be checking my phone every two
minutes. Is a lovely event to be at. | 0:46:38 | 0:46:43
You wouldn't want to miss it. It's a
fantastic event and to be here | 0:46:43 | 0:46:48
celebrating sport, I've had a
fantastic year. Really happy to be | 0:46:48 | 0:46:52
here this evening. Obviously we had
the World Championships. I was | 0:46:52 | 0:46:58
speaking to Michael Johnson earlier
about his highlight, what was your | 0:46:58 | 0:47:03
highlight? It was great to be there
as a spectator. I love watching the | 0:47:03 | 0:47:07
heptathlon. To see the Belgian
heptathlete win, she was out of this | 0:47:07 | 0:47:16
world. I enjoyed watching that. Mo
Farah is the contender for athletics | 0:47:16 | 0:47:22
this year, what do you think of his
chances? He's missed out before. He | 0:47:22 | 0:47:26
has. He's had another incredible
year and done all he can possibly do | 0:47:26 | 0:47:32
on the track. Fantastic to watch him
when again in London. As well as | 0:47:32 | 0:47:38
being extraordinarily busy which you
will be with two children, what's | 0:47:38 | 0:47:41
next? Just having some time at home
with the kids and doing some other | 0:47:41 | 0:47:47
projects, getting involved with
sport. It's a big part of my life | 0:47:47 | 0:47:50
and has been for so long so I want
to continue. Christmas is going to | 0:47:50 | 0:47:55
be hectic with little ones. Yes,
we've got a busy Christmas. My | 0:47:55 | 0:48:01
sister has had another baby and my
sister in law has had another baby | 0:48:01 | 0:48:04
as well. Certainly the biggest,
tallest man on the carpet so far, | 0:48:04 | 0:48:12
Anthony Joshua is here. One of the
contenders tonight. Thank you for | 0:48:12 | 0:48:16
talking to us. What a year. It's
been an interesting year in terms of | 0:48:16 | 0:48:20
what's going on in the boxing ring
and so on. I feel be -- I feel good. | 0:48:20 | 0:48:31
It's inspiring as well. What was
that night in April likely. 90,000 | 0:48:31 | 0:48:38
people at Wembley, Wladimir
Klitschko who had dominated for so | 0:48:38 | 0:48:41
many years -- that night in April at
Wembley. It so soon in my career, | 0:48:41 | 0:48:49
it's not something I was waiting
for, it was brought upon me and I | 0:48:49 | 0:48:53
thought let's roll the dice and see
how we get on. Walking out in front | 0:48:53 | 0:48:56
of 90,000 people, it was just about
delivering. I think we definitely | 0:48:56 | 0:49:01
delivered. We had to show a bit of
grit, bit of skill, a bit of | 0:49:01 | 0:49:08
character and I think that's what
made it a good fight. You've just | 0:49:08 | 0:49:11
mentioned you're not used all this
attention and walking down a red | 0:49:11 | 0:49:16
carpet. What's it like, are you
taking it all in your stride? Yes. | 0:49:16 | 0:49:21
It's not an everyday thing. Maybe
once I'm done with boxing Albee at | 0:49:21 | 0:49:25
every event, but might coach won't
be too happy at the minutes if I am | 0:49:25 | 0:49:32
-- I'll be at every event. I'm just
here to have a good time. This isn't | 0:49:32 | 0:49:37
something we watched growing up so
it's quite new to me. Are you | 0:49:37 | 0:49:43
nervous or looking forward to being
on stage? I'm not nervous but I'm | 0:49:43 | 0:49:49
sitting here as a spectator. My
family were never begin to sports so | 0:49:49 | 0:49:54
it's not something I know what's
going to happen, I'm just going to | 0:49:54 | 0:49:58
sit down as a spectator and take it
in. Then I can pass on the | 0:49:58 | 0:50:02
information of what it was like to
my friends and family. And then | 0:50:02 | 0:50:06
looking forward to 2018. In a
nutshell, are there any big names | 0:50:06 | 0:50:13
you'll be looking to fight? Joseph
Parker and Deontay Wilder. The | 0:50:13 | 0:50:21
heavyweight division is the holy
Grail. Yes, it's the holy Grail. If | 0:50:21 | 0:50:26
a really tough task but I say it's
like it's so simple. I think it's | 0:50:26 | 0:50:29
very possible. I would love to fight
end of March, early April against | 0:50:29 | 0:50:36
Joseph Parker or Deontay Wilder.
Once I get that belt God willing, I | 0:50:36 | 0:50:41
can move forward. And get the last
belt. In terms of your training, | 0:50:41 | 0:50:48
plans for Christmas? I've just come
back from Dubai. We did some fitness | 0:50:48 | 0:50:57
stuff. I came back, straight back
into training, to manage my weight | 0:50:57 | 0:51:02
and stuff. Don't enjoy too much
Christmas turkey. Everyone has | 0:51:02 | 0:51:06
relax. Then get back on the gravy
train. Thank you for talking to us. | 0:51:06 | 0:51:10
All the best. Amir Khan is just back
out of the jungle. Amir Khan how are | 0:51:10 | 0:51:21
you feeling? I feel great, it's
great to be back. I've lost so much | 0:51:21 | 0:51:25
weight, I'm down to fighting weight.
It's great to be here. How's your | 0:51:25 | 0:51:31
fear of those horrible bugs and
snakes and spiders? I won't be going | 0:51:31 | 0:51:35
back there. I'm scared of spiders
and snakes. The spiders, I'm not | 0:51:35 | 0:51:41
scared of them any more. It helped
sleeping next to them and being | 0:51:41 | 0:51:44
around them. But snakes I'm still
scared off. And perhaps they fear of | 0:51:44 | 0:51:49
strawberries now? The strawberries
were a bit of fun, they were nice. | 0:51:49 | 0:51:55
And Q so much and have a lovely
evening. -- thank you so much. Wow, | 0:51:55 | 0:52:02
what a red carpet. It's incredible,
and the stars are still coming | 0:52:02 | 0:52:07
through. It's an air on BBC at
quarter to seven, 640 5pm Sports | 0:52:07 | 0:52:17
Personality of the Year. You can
vote for one of 12 contenders to win | 0:52:17 | 0:52:20
the big awards. We hope you enjoy
it. From all of us at the Echo | 0:52:20 | 0:52:26
Arena, good night. | 0:52:26 | 0:52:30 |
