-It's handball, which is basically

-what it says on the tin.

-But luckily,

-I don't have to explain.

-The players can explain some more

-before Cardiff take on Swansea.

-I tend to tell people that it's

-football but with your hands.

-Or water polo on land.

-It's the simplest way of putting it.

-When you talk to people who haven't

-heard of handball at all.

-There's seven on the court

-at one time.

-There's usually anything

-up to seven substitutes.

-There's a lot

-of rolling substitutes.

-It's a fast game.

-The 2012 Olympics was the

-kick-starter for us in Swansea.

-Most of us hadn't heard

-of handball before.

-Some of us watched it in the

-Olympics and were enthralled.

-We absolutely loved it so we thought

-we had to get this on the go.

-I'm from Germany.

-I grew up

-in a small village near Bremen.

-My mother said

-anything else except football.

-There was handball so I started

-playing and enjoyed it.

-It exists, it develops, it

-progresses.

-There are clubs in Bangor,

-Aberystwyth, Swansea and Cardiff.

-In Cardiff,

-handball has existed for longer.

-We tried to play in a league

-a few years ago.

-We hardly had enough players

-to keep it going.

-Teams in south Wales

-are playing in a proper league.

-We hope to make it

-stronger and more popular.

-It's a Swansea versus Cardiff

-mixed friendly.

-We do this

-once or twice a year.

-We haven't beaten you yet.

-I think you had a draw once!

-The last game we played

-finished 19-18.

-It was very close.

-I think it'll be a very close game.

-The North Wales Snowsports Club

-was formed over sixty years ago.

-Originally in an Old Colwyn garden

-by some Norse ski enthusiasts.

-We've got nearly 400 members now.

-My name is Sion Salisbury.

-I help to coach the children

-and adults to ski...

-..at the Plas y Brenin slope

-in Capel Curig.

-There are sessions

-six times every week.

-School sessions, racing sessions

-like the one going on tonight...

-..and beginner sessions as well

-as sessions for the younger kids.

-We have been practising

-for this year's races.

-We also practise on Fridays to ski

-around poles and learn new skills.

-To ski, you need ski boots, poles

-and a helmet.

-The binding clamps the boots tightly

-so that you can't move.

-The poles help you

-to move along when you ski.

-The helmet keeps you safe

-in case you fall over.

-Then you're ready to ski.

-For the first time

-in several years...

-..we took our first

-junior ski club members...

-..who were interested

-in doing some racing.

-We took a group of nine out to Les

-Crosets in Switzerland...

-..for the Welsh National

-Championships.

-We had a fantastic week

-and some very, very good results.

-In Switzerland,

-my parents weren't there...

-..but my coaches, Peter and Laura,

-and my friend Scarlett...

-..were there to help us do our best

-as well as practising on the snow.

-We would hope to keep on increasing

-our numbers.

-We've got lots

-of new sessions planned.

-We'd love to do more race

-and section trips.

-We're hoping for more schools

-and clubs to get involved.

-I really enjoy skiing.

-I like it here and on the snow.

-It's fun and we make new friends.

-If you like your sport fast,

-competitive and multi-skilled...

-..this is the place to be.

-..the David Broome Event Centre,

-near Chepstow.

-The sport is mounted games and

-over a hundred riders and ponies...

-..are here to do battle

-for the Welsh Pairs Championship.

-There are competitions

-for three different ages today.

-And there are no separate

-categories for girls and boys.

-Everyone competes on equal terms.

-The mounted games was developed out

-of the pony club.

-When you're in pony club, you can

-only do games until you're fifteen.

-After fifteen, you finished.

-A gentleman called Norman Patrick

-and a band of helpers...

-..decided to develop a Mounted Games

-Association of Great Britain.

-It covers all age groups. It's a

-sport of agility, speed and skill.

-It's a family-orientated sport.

-How expensive is it

-if you want to do well?

-If you want the top pony,

-you have to pay a lot of money.

-20-30,000 for a top pony.

-But then again, you can bring a pony

-in off the hill and train him up.

-Do it that way.

-A group of people keep a close watch

-on the action to ensure fair play.

-They make sure that the top seven

-from the heats...

-..make it through to the final

-at the end of the day.

-They compete in three heats

-of seven.

-You get seven points for first

-place, one point for coming last.

-There are eight games in all

-and then we add up the scores.

-The seven with the highest scores

-go through to the 'A' final.

-The next seven compete

-in the 'B' final...

-..and the lowest seven compete

-in the 'C' final.

-Of the seven pairs in the under 12

-We have all aspects of the

-equestrian world here.

-Today you've got the mounted games,

-doing gymkhanas and everything.

-That takes me back to my youth.

-We used to go to shows

-up in the valleys...

-..Church Village and all them,

-and we used to do the jumping.

-The standard is high, isn't it?

-These are unbelievable.

-You could watch them all day

-and they take it so seriously.

-And they're trained at such a level.

-I was watching them yesterday,

-practising.

-They're going like the clappers...

-..picking up things

-off the top of poles.

-Fearless. Talk about speed,

-they really do go for it.

-The sport undoubtedly

-sparks a lifelong passion.

-Past competitors are ready to help

-the next generation.

-What brings you to the world

-of mounted games?

-The children, they love it.

-I used to do it as a child.

-I've been doing this

-since the age of eleven.

-It's a way of life.

-We go here, there and everywhere.

-We'll be living in the lorry

-over the summer.

-When I was young, the small kids

-would ride in the Pony Club...

-..and the older kids would go to the

-MGA but now...

-..the small kids start here, and

-they get fantastic training.

-As they grow up, you've seen them

-in the opens, they're wild.

-Most people wouldn't be able to ride

-like that, jump on and off.

-The riders have to be fit and agile.

-Yes, very fit.

-It's such a good skill.

-They're like stunt riders,

-they're fantastic.

-After winning the first five races

-in the under 17 final...

-..there was no catching

-Lili Antcliff and Lottie Watson...

-..in the blue hats,

-as they won the championship.

-Ben Hopkins and Charlie Yates

-were second.

-In such a fierce competition...

-..someone needs to ensure that the

-points are distributed fairly.

-Any clever cheating going on?

-We try and minimize it

-as much as we can.

-But there are a few sharp ones

-out there.

-I'm lucky,

-I've got six assistant referees...

-..who watch each corner

-and the middle.

-I take an overall view but I rely

-on them to spot any infringements.

-We've reached the final for the open

-pairs, the creme de la creme.

-They have a lot of experience.

-The first race is zig-zag.

-Speed is of the essence.

-But you need to be able to

-turn quickly, too.

-Gemma and John are doing well but

-oh! A mistake there, what a shame.
