makes it even more oppressive that he walked away with the bronze medal

:00:00.:00:00.

with Daryl Selby in this competition.

:00:00.:00:08.

Scenes of great joy and congratulations to England, bronze

:00:09.:00:13.

medallist, there. More live squash for you this afternoon on BBC Three

:00:14.:00:19.

but I am handing the baton to you for the last time. It is emotional.

:00:20.:00:23.

So many tears on the final day of the Commonwealth Games. But this is

:00:24.:00:29.

not the end of the game is for you. You have got a very big role to play

:00:30.:00:34.

a bit later in the day. Yes, later, I am playing Deacon blue, later, we

:00:35.:00:40.

are playing live at the closing ceremony. I did not realise you are

:00:41.:00:45.

going to play that! There we are, can we get a freeze-frame of you?

:00:46.:00:53.

There he is! Heavens above. As you can see, I look just the same as I

:00:54.:00:58.

do now, not. That is about 25 years ago. There you go, side profile.

:00:59.:01:03.

do now, not. That is about 25 years ago. There you go, You have not

:01:04.:01:06.

changed a bit. That is a terrible haircut. Same as now! Your hair

:01:07.:01:13.

clearly has not changed in 20 years. What are you going to be playing?

:01:14.:01:18.

Are you allowed to tell us? If you want to find out you have to watch

:01:19.:01:23.

the closing ceremony. I have got it down to two, so it is either that

:01:24.:01:29.

one or the other one. Speaking of which, talking about weather and

:01:30.:01:32.

water, we had torrential rain. It has eased up outside the BBC

:01:33.:01:37.

Scotland offices. But at one point, I thought you were going to have to

:01:38.:01:41.

play drums in your wellies. It is a Glasgow summer day, a bit of

:01:42.:01:46.

sunshine, rain and wind. It is a sou'wester and sunblock day and that

:01:47.:01:50.

is what we expect. People will be turning out at the closing ceremony,

:01:51.:01:56.

dressed for the occasion, probably ill-equipped for the occasion but it

:01:57.:01:59.

will be great fun to write. Kylie Minogue is playing as well. Your Ayr

:02:00.:02:04.

could you send us a Commonwelfie with Kylie?

:02:05.:02:10.

She has been asking me all week to have a photograph with me but I'm

:02:11.:02:17.

sure we can work that out. I will get one with Kylie and by that

:02:18.:02:22.

stage, we will be fair so you won't see it. Good luck with it.

:02:23.:02:28.

Good afternoon, it is the last yards of the 20th Commonwealth Games in

:02:29.:02:32.

bars go, and as do the just said, still plenty coming your way. -- in

:02:33.:02:38.

Glasgow. Between now and 70, we have four medal matches remaining in the

:02:39.:02:43.

squash. Two gold medals up for grabs, including the men's doubles.

:02:44.:02:47.

We have also got the men's gold medal match in the hockey, between

:02:48.:02:51.

Australia and India, which was played out a short while ago. Five

:02:52.:02:56.

matches and five gold medals in badminton and we will see who can

:02:57.:03:00.

finish top of the tree. And of course, all eyes on Lizzie

:03:01.:03:02.

Armitstead and David Millar in the road race.

:03:03.:03:06.

The squash at Scotstoun, which we saw a bit of a little earlier, they

:03:07.:03:12.

are running behind schedule, which means we still have plenty of squash

:03:13.:03:17.

coming away. While they tried to take a break in between events over

:03:18.:03:21.

there, let's take in some badminton. Earlier, there was the All-England

:03:22.:03:23.

final, for the Earlier, there was the All-England

:03:24.:03:27.

husband and wife pair, Chris and Gabby Adcock, up against the fourth

:03:28.:03:33.

seeds, Chris Langridge and Heather Olver. Let's find out how they got

:03:34.:03:36.

on. COMMENTATOR: That is a lovely drop

:03:37.:03:49.

shot from Chris Langridge. and Oliver have won three points.

:03:50.:04:08.

Chris Langridge, just showing the shuttle to the umpire. Saying he did

:04:09.:04:16.

not want to change it. Chris and Gabby Adcock wanted to because they

:04:17.:04:19.

have lost three points. The umpire says there is no need to change it,

:04:20.:04:20.

it is fine. Oh, my word. Chris approves of that

:04:21.:05:23.

one. What a wonderful shot from Heather Olver. But one suspects it

:05:24.:05:27.

is too little, too late. We did see Kirsty Gilmour coming

:05:28.:05:41.

back from 11-19 down, yesterday, in her semifinal. Winning ten straight

:05:42.:05:48.

points, and the match. But that goes wide. And it is eight gold-medal

:05:49.:05:54.

points for Chris and Gabby Adcock. History is made at the Commonwealth

:05:55.:06:21.

Games! For the first time ever, a husband and wife have won the gold

:06:22.:06:24.

medal in the mixed doubles. APPLAUSE

:06:25.:06:39.

And they have performed brilliantly throughout the tournament. They have

:06:40.:06:43.

not dropped a single game. And they faced some tough opponents,

:06:44.:06:48.

Malaysian, Singaporean, Scottish. And now their fellow countrymen. And

:06:49.:06:54.

it is Gabby Adcock who will be England's most successful competitor

:06:55.:06:58.

in the badminton tournament. She has a clean sweep, gold in the mixed,

:06:59.:07:04.

silver in the team, and bronze in the women's doubles. They were

:07:05.:07:10.

absolutely superb today, Chris and Gabby Adcock. It is funny, isn't it?

:07:11.:07:17.

Two married couples in two days winning gold in mixed doubles, in

:07:18.:07:21.

two different sports, of course, after Paul and Joanna Drinkhall in

:07:22.:07:22.

the table tennis yesterday. British Columbia, with Chris Herd.

:07:23.:07:48.

But you are never tempted to marry him. That is a little personal,

:07:49.:07:59.

isn't it? LAUGHTER A great moment for their families as

:08:00.:08:05.

well. We tend to forget the sacrifices that parents make, all

:08:06.:08:11.

those hours of driving their kids to tournaments, all the practice

:08:12.:08:16.

sessions. Rewarded at moments like these.

:08:17.:08:28.

Confirmation, then, that Chris and Gabby Adcock have won the gold

:08:29.:08:32.

medal, beating Chris Langridge and Heather Olver, 21-9, 21-12.

:08:33.:08:42.

A clean sweep for the home nations, gold and silver for England, and

:08:43.:08:50.

bronze. And. Only the eighth badminton medal Scotland have ever

:08:51.:08:54.

won in Commonwealth Games competition.

:08:55.:09:37.

The medals will presented by the vice president of Commonwealth Games

:09:38.:09:51.

Scotland, and the quaich by the technical director of the

:09:52.:09:52.

International Badminton Federation. The winners of the runs medal,

:09:53.:10:20.

Scotland! Robert Blair and Imogen Bankier. -- bronze medal. Image in a

:10:21.:10:28.

World Cup silver medallist with Chris Adcock in 2011. They played in

:10:29.:10:32.

the Olympics together but underperformed. She went back to

:10:33.:10:37.

Scotland and found a new partner, Robert Blair, a former medallist in

:10:38.:10:42.

Commonwealth Games, playing for England but born in Edinburgh. He

:10:43.:10:44.

has come home as well. The winners of the silver medal,

:10:45.:11:19.

England! Represented by Chris Langridge and Heather Olver, a

:11:20.:11:22.

brilliant win over the Malaysians in the semifinals but to be honest,

:11:23.:11:26.

outclassed in the final. Represented by Heather Olver. And Chris

:11:27.:11:29.

Langridge. The quaich is made from the Glasgow

:11:30.:11:53.

Celtic, and they look beautiful. -- from the glove on Elm -- Glasgow,

:11:54.:12:05.

Elm. And the Commonwealth champions, England! Chris and Gabby Adcock did

:12:06.:12:10.

not lose a game throughout the tournament, the outstanding mixed

:12:11.:12:11.

doubles pair of the competition. Very well done to them and a

:12:12.:12:49.

flourish of medals for the home nations on the final day of the

:12:50.:12:52.

Commonwealth Games. As promised, we will be going back to Scotstoun from

:12:53.:12:56.

all I've squash, this time the mixed doubles but before we get there,

:12:57.:12:59.

here is a quick reminder of the rules involved.

:13:00.:13:08.

Squash is a fast moving game which requires skill, speed and supreme

:13:09.:13:14.

fitness. It is played on a four walls caught with a small, hollow

:13:15.:13:20.

rubber ball. The basic principle is to keep hitting the ball against the

:13:21.:13:22.

front wall until your opponent cannot get it back any more. When

:13:23.:13:27.

serving, players must keep one foot in the service box. The ball must

:13:28.:13:32.

hit the wall between the service line and the outline, landing behind

:13:33.:13:35.

the short line on the opposite side of the court. For the remainder of

:13:36.:13:40.

the rally, players have to hit the wall above the board, also known as

:13:41.:13:45.

the tin, and below the outline. The ball was only allowed to hit the

:13:46.:13:48.

floor once before each shot but it can hit as many walls as the player

:13:49.:13:53.

wants. If a player is impeded or one-sided final opponent, they can

:13:54.:13:58.

ask for a let. The referee may order the point to be replayed or award it

:13:59.:14:07.

to the player affected. For a player to win again, they must reach 11

:14:08.:14:12.

points. At the Commonwealth Games, there are men's and women's single

:14:13.:14:16.

events plus three double competitions including men, women

:14:17.:14:18.

and mixed fares. There is home nation interest as

:14:19.:14:33.

well here. Their opponents are David Palmer and Rachael Grinham. It has

:14:34.:14:39.

already started, let's join our commentators, Susan Rose and Simon

:14:40.:14:42.

Reed. COMMENTATOR: Women taking their

:14:43.:15:00.

place on the bright court which is traditionally their place. Very much

:15:01.:15:10.

so. This is a very traditional way. Waite why the forehand court rather

:15:11.:15:15.

than the backhand? Lynn it is the ball's comfortable side -- it is the

:15:16.:15:20.

more comfortable side. You have a little bit more consistency. It is a

:15:21.:15:30.

little easier on the forehand side and gives it a bit more consistency.

:15:31.:15:43.

It is fascinating, I come from a background of tennis where in mixed

:15:44.:15:49.

doubles, it is about 80% the man rather than the woman. He can play a

:15:50.:15:53.

really dominant part and it is not the case in squash mixed doubles. It

:15:54.:15:59.

is not the case at all, the women will try to freeze the men out of

:16:00.:16:03.

the game because they are the more powerful of the pairings. But if it

:16:04.:16:06.

the game because they are the more does become very warm and dominant,

:16:07.:16:10.

the men will start to encroach on their side of the court to try to

:16:11.:16:12.

interrupt play. Lucky. I don't think it was the

:16:13.:16:55.

cleanest of hits from Barker but it was just what he wanted.

:16:56.:17:06.

Fascinating, Barker used to go to the British Open as a spectator and

:17:07.:17:09.

got bored, you did not really fancy it, and things conspired and now he

:17:10.:17:14.

just loves being a professional player. I bet he is glad he changed

:17:15.:17:16.

his mind. Cracking rally. The Australians

:17:17.:18:13.

deserve the point. They get the let, I think they are a little fortunate.

:18:14.:18:21.

For me as well. It caught his racket slightly but I think the quality of

:18:22.:18:25.

the shot was just too good. They played the point so well. Palmer and

:18:26.:18:28.

Grinham. Again, a little bit of extra

:18:29.:18:43.

imagination from Rachael Grinham. Beautiful. They started very

:18:44.:19:16.

impressively, the Australians. I did not expect anything less to be

:19:17.:19:19.

honest. They are such an attacking pair and if you leave anything

:19:20.:19:23.

open, the slightest bit, you are in trouble.

:19:24.:20:34.

Again, a superb rally. Much more imagination from the England duo but

:20:35.:20:42.

was not a brilliant finish? Just superb, I love the way they play.

:20:43.:20:48.

They construct the rally and they look for the opening and they take

:20:49.:20:51.

it. It is such an example of how to play doubles.

:20:52.:21:14.

Nasty clash. They will be some housekeeping here. I am not sure he

:21:15.:21:26.

is seriously injured but they got very tangled up, Grinham and Barker.

:21:27.:21:32.

I think it is the shock. It is more a case of jumping out of the way, I

:21:33.:21:36.

think he just slipped rather than getting hit. CHUCKLES

:21:37.:21:45.

Just got tapped on the back of the leg but he was off balance. Yes. He

:21:46.:21:56.

is not one to milk it. Especially being hit by a woman! CHUCKLES

:21:57.:22:01.

But smiles now and he is fine. APPLAUSE

:22:02.:23:34.

Prince Albert of Monaco there, on the right. Just wondering if there

:23:35.:23:42.

will be a big squash tournament coming in Monte Carlo.

:23:43.:24:14.

Let called. She did have a chance of getting it but obviously felt it

:24:15.:24:25.

would not have been as good a shot as it might have been.

:24:26.:24:47.

Barker turning almost 360, but there was danger there with Palmer just in

:24:48.:24:56.

front of him. A run of nets at the moment. The

:24:57.:25:02.

front of him. A run of nets at the points clear. -- a run of let's.

:25:03.:25:25.

Two wonderful shots from Alison Waters and Grinham very close to

:25:26.:25:30.

getting it up but just too tight to the wall. Good play

:25:31.:25:34.

getting it up but just too tight to that mid-court area. If

:25:35.:25:40.

getting it up but just too tight to she will look to take it in or

:25:41.:25:44.

possibly hold an snapped her wrist through an push for the drive, which

:25:45.:25:46.

is also very hard to get. Barker disappointed with that. In

:25:47.:26:08.

position and the Barker disappointed with that. In

:26:09.:26:08.

two points clear. They did well, pushing Waters to the

:26:09.:26:36.

back, not They did well, pushing Waters to the

:26:37.:26:39.

on it. The lead is as big as They did well, pushing Waters to the

:26:40.:26:44.

been. This is best of three games, remember.

:26:45.:27:39.

Great shot from Grinham, perfect length. You can take such a good

:27:40.:27:46.

length on this court, if you hit it flat, it keeps the bounce down, so

:27:47.:27:52.

it does not sit up. She is slightly over the top of the ball and it

:27:53.:27:56.

keeps the banks down and it is hard for it to come out at the back of

:27:57.:28:08.

the court. -- keeps the bounce down. The ball is slower coming out of the

:28:09.:28:14.

bat. It can get caught tight in the back corners. The white ball does

:28:15.:28:17.

not tend to bounce as much of the traditional black ball.

:28:18.:28:54.

said there was a touch as he played the shot.

:28:55.:29:04.

He gets what he wants. Just on the back swing, I think. Certainly no

:29:05.:29:17.

criticism from the Australians. That is much better from Barker. This is

:29:18.:29:22.

better news for the English pair. Very good play from Peter Barker.

:29:23.:29:26.

David Palmer came over to take the forehand shot. He thought he was

:29:27.:29:31.

going to have to cover the backhand side again and Peter took advantage

:29:32.:29:34.

of that, straight back into the forehand side.

:29:35.:29:43.

So, the 3-point lead the Australians had has disappeared.

:29:44.:31:03.

Waters, stretching but just could not get there.

:31:04.:31:35.

Super length. Well played. Incredible play. I mean, great

:31:36.:31:47.

teamwork from England, there. Peter Barker covering and Alison Waters

:31:48.:31:50.

missed the crosscourt. But then David Palmer, can you believe he is

:31:51.:31:58.

38? He is just so nimble. So fast to see the opportunity, and clinical

:31:59.:32:04.

with the finish. Remarkable. Barker is rapid but he could not get there.

:32:05.:32:06.

To gain points. Super. They were the dominant pair.

:32:07.:33:10.

The English did will to counter but in the end, it is Palmer and Grinham

:33:11.:33:20.

who take the opening game, 11-8. And it is deserved because they were the

:33:21.:33:23.

team looking for more opportunities and getting them. I think so. I have

:33:24.:33:28.

no doubt they would always go out and beat the attacking pair but I

:33:29.:33:32.

think England did really well to come back. They started to find

:33:33.:33:35.

their feet a bit more and they were a little traditional to start with

:33:36.:33:39.

but they realised they needed to start attacking. It is the attacking

:33:40.:33:44.

play that sometimes, if you don't win of that first attack, it opens

:33:45.:33:47.

up the court for the finishing attack after it. You have to use the

:33:48.:33:53.

court, the space. It is a big court, lots of spaces to hit and you have

:33:54.:33:59.

to use them. A lot of noise in the arena but let's see if we can pick

:34:00.:34:01.

up a little bit of his coaching. Some of the action from earlier on.

:34:02.:34:30.

It was a very good first game and the English were playing well. As

:34:31.:34:36.

the game evolved. But a terrific finish. Both the Australians looking

:34:37.:34:49.

for openings in the front court. And Palmer in particular. Excellent at

:34:50.:34:50.

putting them away. Super length from Grinham. What has

:34:51.:35:06.

already been a good day for the Australians, Cameron Pilley and

:35:07.:35:10.

Kasey Brown taking the bronze medal. In the mixed doubles. And it could

:35:11.:35:14.

get a whole lot better. Do you think the English have got to

:35:15.:35:41.

do anything tactically different in this second game? I think the way

:35:42.:35:43.

they finished the first game was the they finished the first game was the

:35:44.:35:47.

way to play. I wonder if they will come out and tried to steady the

:35:48.:35:52.

ship. And just go a bit more, straight drive, then possibly some

:35:53.:35:56.

down the middle. We will have to see.

:35:57.:36:03.

down the middle. We will have to light coming in on the far side and

:36:04.:36:08.

that is what Peter Barker was looking for, to get that stopped.

:36:09.:36:15.

Any destruction, obviously impinges on the play, so he we go in game

:36:16.:36:17.

number two. -- here we go. Wonderful finish from Rachael

:36:18.:36:41.

Grinham. She is just a star. I am so impressed with her, I have watched

:36:42.:36:47.

him play for many years. For 37 years of age, she is just such a

:36:48.:36:59.

super player. She is not sure. She is looking up for a replay. There it

:37:00.:37:11.

is. It was touch and go. She obviously felt it, sometimes you do

:37:12.:37:17.

not know, when it is that close. Sometimes, I think generally as a

:37:18.:37:21.

player, you do know, but there is the decision when you are never

:37:22.:37:26.

quite sure. But you certainly push it. Most

:37:27.:37:57.

A rare, and full error from Grinham. --

:37:58.:38:25.

Wow. What a fantastic shot that was from Peter Barker. Superb on that

:38:26.:38:31.

side of the court, it is the backhand for most players but Peter

:38:32.:38:35.

is a left-hander so it is his forehand and a great opportunity

:38:36.:38:43.

when they come up. A couple of errors now from Grinham. The English

:38:44.:38:46.

with a two point lead. Well played. Grinham just clipping

:38:47.:39:18.

Waters as she came through. A 5-1 lead now for Waters and

:39:19.:39:42.

Barker. This is sensational stuff from the

:39:43.:40:04.

English. They have come out attacking and I think that is the

:40:05.:40:08.

key thing. They had a couple of gifts from Rachael Grinham. They

:40:09.:40:14.

always help. Certainly, the English pair attacking a lot more.

:40:15.:40:21.

Not that time, he was on a roll, you can understand why he went for it.

:40:22.:40:29.

When it is going well for you, you tend to pick up momentum and you

:40:30.:40:30.

want to do it more. Right through the legs of Rachael

:40:31.:40:52.

Grinham. A low shot for the English. No clear tactics in that rally but

:40:53.:42:16.

beautifully crafted shotmaking. The Aussies starting to claw their

:42:17.:42:49.

way back into this game. Just a thought, David Palmer is in

:42:50.:43:32.

the next gold medal match, the men's doubles. There is not a

:43:33.:43:37.

thought of him holding anything back for that? Until that match is over,

:43:38.:43:46.

that will not even come into his mind, he will not even be thinking

:43:47.:43:47.

about it. Great length. Perfect way to see how good it was,

:43:48.:44:04.

four points clear now. Much shorter rallies. One rally in

:44:05.:44:43.

the men's bronze medal, lasted four and a half minutes. These four are

:44:44.:44:52.

much more attack minded. Again, super length. Allison is having a

:44:53.:45:01.

lot of success without other moment, she has had a couple down the

:45:02.:45:04.

only about four feet away and they are having an open discussion. It is

:48:48.:48:52.

not quite open. It is not a conversation. They do it quite

discreetly. But you are so busy concentrating on what you are doing

that you don't necessarily listen to that you don't necessarily listen to

She steadied herself, fires it right down the wall.

:49:55.:50:04.

Yes, she can play those behind the back shots. We have seen one

:50:05.:50:11.

earlier. Every chance of getting to it.

:50:12.:50:30.

Palmer, as he watched that, he just looked like he was going to try to

:50:31.:50:36.

slap it into the crosscourt nick. He literally just changed the direction

:50:37.:50:39.

and popped it in which is why Peter Barker was standing slightly back.

:50:40.:50:44.

It is all about fractions of seconds. The reactions are so quick.

:50:45.:51:17.

Oh, sensational shot from David Palmer. And what a time to produce

:51:18.:51:29.

it. The lead, which was four, is now down to one.

:51:30.:53:00.

Yes! APPLAUSE Peter Barker with the finish, after

:53:01.:53:06.

such a gruelling rally. It was good play from Barker. He

:53:07.:53:21.

used the more central part of the court, just whipping behind Rachael

:53:22.:53:24.

Grinham, just too quick to get a racket on it. Two gain points, for

:53:25.:53:31.

:53:32.:54:53.

Great rally. Quality written all over it. Just remarkable. You know,

:54:54.:55:01.

if people at home watching doubles for the first time, this is such a

:55:02.:55:08.

great example of how to play, a lot of attacking play, defending my

necessary, you know, great pick-ups and athleticism. -- where necessary.

:55:14.:55:20.

It has just got it all. Still game ball.

:55:21.:55:54.

And obvious let, there, for David Palmer. No way through.

:55:55.:56:17.

It is so tight. Remember, if the Aussies win this point, it is then

:56:18.:56:27.

match point, for them, because it is sudden death. It is either game

:56:28.:56:31.

point, for England, or the title for the Australians.

:56:32.:56:39.

Alison Waters, getting tucked up. This is it, match point and game

:56:40.:56:57.

point. The pressure is on now for the English pair. They really have

:56:58.:57:02.

got to hold their nerve, nothing silly, nothing cheap. Just pure

:57:03.:57:09.

concentration. Who is going to be brave?

:57:10.:58:20.

these. Nobody wants to give an inch, here. Nobody wants to make a

:58:21.:58:21.

mistake. Can you imagine how he's feeling,

:58:22.:58:49.

David Palmer? He came out of retirement, just to win the gold,

:58:50.:58:50.

here. David Palmer did not think it was

up. APPLAUSE And Barker act sets that. How

:59:39.:59:58.

terribly sad for the English pair. I thought they stuck in well. I think

:59:59.:00:01.

they found thought they stuck in well. I think

:00:02.:00:04.

through the first game. They did everything they could. They had game

point in the second game. They did do everything. I am very sad for

:00:11.:00:14.

them but I'm also delighted the David Palmer and Rachael Grinham. Of

:00:15.:00:18.

course, David getting the gold that he has never won before. I think

:00:19.:00:20.

they put on such a good display he has never won before. I think

:00:21.:00:26.

they got it right. They spent the whole match trying to look for the

:00:27.:00:29.

opening, and took it when they got the chance. To be honest, the only

:00:30.:00:34.

time they really steadied and played line and length was when they were

:00:35.:00:38.

at match point. They did not want to make a mistake and they waited for

:00:39.:00:44.

the mistake to come. Fortunately, David got the opportunity to

:00:45.:00:49.

the mistake to come. Fortunately, squash. Delighted for them but still

:00:50.:00:50.

very sad for the English pair. Some incredible rallies, no gold for

:00:51.:01:07.

England but nonetheless, congratulations to Peter Barker and

:01:08.:01:09.

Alison Waters on picking up silver in the mixed doubles of the Swatch.

:01:10.:01:12.

That is the penultimate gold medal available at Scotstoun. Coming up

shortly, the final of the men's doubles, and we will be talking to

:04:33.:04:39.

A Star is born here. It is gold! Some great scenes and some great

:04:40.:05:33.

highlights over the last 11 days of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in

:05:34.:05:37.

Glasgow. I am at last pretty relieved to tell you that the

:05:38.:05:42.

weather has improved here at Pacific key, even the sun made an appearance

:05:43.:05:48.

and a welcome one at that. The rain has definitely stopped, it is still

:05:49.:05:51.

a little blustery but the important thing is, it is dry. People are out

:05:52.:05:55.

and about and mingling and having a good time. As I mentioned earlier,

:05:56.:06:01.

we are concentrating solely on the squash for the time being because it

:06:02.:06:06.

has been a busy day at Scotstoun. Four medals I think it is, up for

:06:07.:06:12.

grabs. Let's talk to Matthew Pinsent who is at Scotstoun for us. The

:06:13.:06:17.

squash does not feature on the itinerary as far as the Olympics

:06:18.:06:22.

goes, you have been there for a few days, how has it been? Because of

:06:23.:06:26.

course they want to deliver the best squash they can give on a global

:06:27.:06:30.

scale. What have you made of the last few days? I think it has been a

:06:31.:06:36.

privilege to watch this sport up close. It is very dramatic. You can

:06:37.:06:41.

see the glass box out there. The atmosphere at Scotstoun has been

:06:42.:06:45.

wonderful. For these players, they continually come off court and say

:06:46.:06:49.

this is the highest competition they get. The most important competition.

:06:50.:06:55.

Squash has flirted with the Olympics, applied several times for

:06:56.:06:59.

Olympic status and always been rebuffed. I know for many of the

:07:00.:07:03.

players it is a continual disappointment. But this is their

:07:04.:07:07.

sport, their biggest showcase. England particularly have made the

:07:08.:07:12.

most of it. Coming up shortly, we have the final gold medal matches,

:07:13.:07:17.

men's doubles matches and there is a real sense of d?j? vu? Absolutely.

:07:18.:07:24.

We have Nick Matthew and Adrian Grant going for England. They are

:07:25.:07:30.

defending champions from Delhi in 2010. England have never lost the

:07:31.:07:35.

men's doubles in Commonwealth history. That has been four gold

:07:36.:07:42.

medals up until this point. We are hoping to see an England gold medal.

:07:43.:07:46.

England have performed brilliantly here in squash at the moment, they

:07:47.:07:53.

are sitting on eight medals and in Delhi, there was a total of six

:07:54.:07:57.

which was their previous best. Two gold in Delhi So'oialo hoping to go

:07:58.:08:03.

from one gold here at the moment, eight medals in total, 22-mac gold

:08:04.:08:08.

and nine which would be a great result. Particularly for Nick

:08:09.:08:11.

Matthew. Might remember watching him in singles if you days ago. England

:08:12.:08:18.

Squash absolutely predominant at the moment. Thanks very much. The men's

:08:19.:08:25.

:08:26.:08:32.

take on Australia in the men's doubles final. When we talk about

there. I'm lucky my good man. You know this place very well. I spent a

:13:41.:13:49.

What is the experience like having tens of thousands of people out

:15:51.:15:54.

were shouting my name, it is rubbish year-to-date! -- it is rubbish here

:15:55.:15:57.

today. My dad reckoned we were brought up

:15:58.:16:12.

in a croft and we used to tend sheep. And he said the kids would

:16:13.:16:19.

run for miles rounding up sheep. And that had a lot to do with my

:16:20.:16:25.

potential and my aptitude for endurance sport.

:16:26.:16:30.

Thank you dad, I am here now! Well done, Lee Williams, he deserves a

:16:31.:16:44.

medal of his own for getting across all 71 athletes from all of the

:16:54.:16:57.

on BBC Three, we are featuring a lot of squash from Scotstoun sports

campus. We saw the mixed doubles in action earlier, where England's

:17:02.:17:04.

Peter Barker and Alison Waters fell just short of winning gold. They

:17:05.:17:08.

come away with silver. Let's hear how they felt about how the contest

:17:09.:17:11.

went against their Australian opponents. Allison, Peter, silver

:17:12.:17:20.

medal, congratulations. Yes, I mean, that was a pretty good match.

:17:21.:17:24.

Obviously, we are disappointed to have lost but I thought we played

:17:25.:17:27.

very well. To come away with a silver medal, at the start of the

:17:28.:17:31.

week, we would have taken it. We put up a good performance and we are

:17:32.:17:36.

both really pleased. It has been a great week. Peter, there was a

:17:37.:17:39.

moment in the second game when you had a nice lead. Any change of

:17:40.:17:45.

tactics? Did you want to do more of the same? More of the same. Credit

:17:46.:17:52.

to the other team. You know, we came off and I'm disappointed to lose but

:17:53.:17:55.

I'm not disappointed with the way we played. Credit to them, they played

:17:56.:18:01.

really well. I thought it was the best we have played all week,

:18:02.:18:05.

actually. We have got progressively better. It was not to be. It is such

:18:06.:18:09.

a different dynamic, playing doubles. We play singles all the

:18:10.:18:15.

time. It has been really good fun. I have known out since I was ten. It

:18:16.:18:20.

has been a really good on to play with her this week. It has been

:18:21.:18:25.

brilliant. It did not go unnoticed that you definitely did not contest

:18:26.:18:28.

the last point, it was a straight off handshake. Yeah, I mean, I'm not

:18:29.:18:33.

going to start picking up doubles, when you know it is a double, it is

:18:34.:18:38.

a double. I wish my 30-year-old legs would move a bit quicker to get the

:18:39.:18:43.

ball. But they didn't. They won fair and square. Congratulations to them.

:18:44.:18:49.

Congratulations to Alison, because before this, she did not have a

:18:50.:18:57.

medal and now she has two. At one point, you almost in tears, talking

:18:58.:19:00.

to me after the singles particularly. What a turnaround this

:19:01.:19:04.

week. Yes, I was, the single did not go to plan but to come away a bronze

:19:05.:19:10.

and a silver, I'm delighted. I have really enjoyed playing with Peter

:19:11.:19:13.

this week. It has been lovely to watch you. Well done, guys. So, that

:19:14.:19:20.

was Peter Barker and Alison Waters, who come away from the Commonwealth

:19:21.:19:24.

Games with a silver medal in the mixed doubles, after coming unstuck

:19:25.:19:28.

in the final. Now these are the live pictures from Scotstoun. There's a

:19:29.:19:32.

bit of a delayed proceedings, for what is now going to be the final

:19:33.:19:36.

event in terms of squash. David Palmer, who came out with the gold

:19:37.:19:40.

medal with Rachael Grinham against Peter and Alison in the mixed

:19:41.:19:44.

doubles, will feature in this final as well, the men's doubles. He is

:19:45.:19:50.

getting a bit of treatment. He is getting a bit of rest as he tries

:19:51.:19:53.

for two gold medals in as many hours. Just to remind you, these are

:19:54.:19:58.

the defending champions, Adrian Grant and Nick Matthew of England,

:19:59.:20:03.

taking on the second seeds, David Palmer and Cameron Pilley, in the

Palmer, the runner-up four years ago with a different partner, has come

:20:11.:20:14.

out of retirement to play his fifth Commonwealth Games and so far, it

:20:15.:20:17.

has proved a good decision because he is now the most X-rated squash

:20:18.:20:21.

player in Commonwealth Games history. After guaranteeing himself

:20:22.:20:25.

to more medals yesterday, taking his career tally to eight, Nick Matthew

:20:26.:20:30.

is going for the double double after retaining his singles title six days

:20:31.:20:36.

ago. They are warming up. -- the most decorated squash player in

:20:37.:20:39.

Commonwealth Games history, David Palmer. Let's get to the

:20:40.:20:40.

commentators. The men's doubles gold medal match.

:20:41.:21:10.

Commentator there is Adrian Grant, part of the team with Nick Matthew

:21:11.:21:14.

who won in Delhi. A good singles player, who has been wracked in the

:21:15.:21:18.

top 20, fifth in the world open in 2008, and now ranked 22. -- who has

:21:19.:21:27.

been ranked in the top 20. Obviously, this is a huge occasion

:21:28.:21:31.

for him, as it is for Nick Matthew, who will be mustard keen to rack up

:21:32.:21:36.

another gold medal. Absolutely. He is used to tasting gold. He knows

:21:37.:21:40.

what it feels like. Also for him, he will want to retain his title. These

:21:41.:21:45.

guys won the gold medal in Delhi. He already has a gold medal in these

:21:46.:21:48.

championships but he will want to do it for his team-mate as well.

:21:49.:21:55.

That is how they came through. The quarterfinal against the Welsh pair

:21:56.:22:05.

of greed and Evans, and then a much tougher one against Alan Clyne and

:22:06.:22:09.

Harry Leitch that went all the way. -- of Creed and Evans. It was

:22:10.:22:14.

getting progressively more difficult, as it should do, as the

:22:15.:22:17.

tournament unfolded. The England coaching team. Kris

:22:18.:22:23.

Robertson in charge. So, The England coaching team. Kris

:22:24.:22:33.

have had their two minutes to warm up and now

:22:34.:22:39.

have had their two minutes to warm number two seed from Australia. --

:22:40.:22:40.

seeds. Let's have a look at these two. This

:22:41.:23:03.

is their run-through. Round of 16, and then a quarterfinal against

:23:04.:23:08.

Scott Crawford and Greg Lobban of Scotland, and the semifinal against

:23:09.:23:10.

Daryl Selby and James Willstrop. And various David Palmer, already a

:23:11.:23:25.

gold medallist, The most decorated male

:23:26.:23:41.

player of all time in the Commonwealth Games. This will be his

:23:42.:23:46.

eighth medal. But he never had a gold until half an hour ago.

:23:47.:23:57.

He will be playing alongside Cameron Pilley, 31 years old. He lives in

:23:58.:24:02.

Holland now. But already, two bronze medals,

:24:03.:24:13.

winning the bronze in the mixed with Katie Brown -- Kasey Brown. But is

:24:14.:24:19.

it going to be gold or silver, here? LAUGHTER

:24:20.:24:34.

They are greedy. Greedy and cynical. But good fun with it. APPLAUSE

:24:35.:24:44.

The bronze medal match was a bit door, to put it bluntly. -- a bit

:24:45.:24:50.

dour. Full of attrition and long rallies. Do you say the same thing

:24:51.:24:54.

here? I don't think so. These guys hit the ball very hard. The English

:24:55.:25:00.

team I try to use those tactics. They were successful with that in

:25:01.:25:03.

the semifinal. I think they might feel as though possibly they could

:25:04.:25:10.

use attrition to win the games, and then let Adrian Grant's forehand do

:25:11.:25:14.

the talking when there are loose shorts. That combination has worked

:25:15.:25:19.

well for them. -- loose shots. But the Australians will use page to

:25:20.:25:22.

create chaos in the middle of the court and then take advantage of the

:25:23.:25:25.

space. And they are big guys, they are going to stand up and get in the

:25:26.:25:29.

way of Nick Matthew and Adrian Grant. I love that phrase, creating

:25:30.:25:34.

chaos. It seems to me that it is exactly the phrase that works. It is

:25:35.:25:37.

not so much going into space but finding space because there is none

:25:38.:25:41.

there, but if you create people who are unhinged, moving in the wrong

:25:42.:25:45.

direction, you suddenly have a chance. You try to hit the ball into

:25:46.:25:49.

your opponent 's body and feet, try to put it in the middle sometimes,

:25:50.:25:54.

create confusion, get both players going for the ball. Communication is

:25:55.:25:57.

a big part of doubles. You need to communicate but when the ball comes

:25:58.:26:01.

into the middle, especially at the front of the court, both players

:26:02.:26:04.

cannot rely on communication. They have to go for it. That creates the

:26:05.:26:09.

space, and then you need the attacking mentality to take

:26:10.:26:11.

advantage immediately. That is why it is not always the best singles

:26:12.:26:15.

players which are the best doubles players. So we are ready to go, Nick

:26:16.:26:20.

Matthew with Adrian Grant, the reigning champions, the number one

:26:21.:26:25.

seeds, against David Palmer and Cameron Pilley, the number two

:26:26.:26:26.

seeds, from Australia. England to serve, best of three

:26:27.:26:43.

games. APPLAUSE

:26:44.:27:46.

There is that forehand that you are talking about. A little bit lucky,

:27:47.:27:50.

it clipped the top of the racket, not intending that shot but he is

:27:51.:27:52.

dangerous even when he reaches back on the court. That is normally a

:27:53.:27:55.

defensive position. Oh, yes, beautiful clipped burst

:27:56.:29:09.

from Parma, and then from Cameron Pilley. -- David Palmer. Young

:29:10.:29:15.

Cameron Pilley holds the record for the hardest hit of all time, 282

:29:16.:29:21.

kilometres per hour. You can see the kind of strength he used in that

:29:22.:29:22.

shot. They feel that was a little unlucky,

:29:23.:29:58.

the English. They have been careful up until now not to give away a soft

:29:59.:30:03.

let. That is a let that maybe would be a let in singles but in doubles,

:30:04.:30:06.

you want to try to make it continuous and more fun for the

:30:07.:30:09.

spectators, really putting the emphasis on getting the ball but we

:30:10.:30:13.

have seen and tighten up a little bit towards the latter stages of

:30:14.:30:14.

this tournament. Nick Matthew said he was induced by

:30:15.:30:45.

squash when he went along to see a squash match, and he loved the sound

:30:46.:30:51.

the ball made when it hit the wall. You can really hear that come here.

:30:52.:30:56.

A lot of it done by him. It is a very gratifying sound. -- you can

:30:57.:30:58.

really hear that, here. very much professional squash but it

:30:59.:32:05.

is not making for a great exhibition at the moment. The ball is quite

:32:06.:32:10.

warm at the moment and the harder these guys hit it, the warmer it

:32:11.:32:19.

will stay. It is very difficult to find that space right now when the

:32:20.:32:23.

ball is very warm. Cameron Pilley is actually standing back a little bit.

:32:24.:32:27.

That is one of his strengths. There is a lot of power when the ball set

:32:28.:32:30.

up, even off the back wall. Tried to do something a little bit

:32:31.:33:57.

different there, David Palmer. These first few rallies are very long.

:33:58.:34:06.

different there, David Palmer. These I think that is what we will see the

:34:07.:34:10.

Aussie team do after a while, first opportunity they get, they are going

:34:11.:34:14.

to take. The longer the rallies go, the more it will favour Matthew and

:34:15.:34:17.

Grant. Fantastic shot. Great shot from

:34:18.:34:50.

Grant. Creating that opportunity, a nice angle down the middle. A loose

:34:51.:34:55.

shot from Pilley and he cracks it across, beautiful shot.

:34:56.:36:03.

Just clipped Palmer on his way through so given the let, rant back.

:36:04.:36:13.

I am surprised more players do not do that. If a player has an easy

:36:14.:36:18.

shot at the front of the court, maybe he could just get in front of

:36:19.:36:24.

his swing and baby it will be a let. It was a nice opportunity for

:36:25.:36:30.

Grant. -- and maybe it will be a let.

:36:31.:36:48.

I think that is fair enough. That is really what the referees have been

:36:49.:36:55.

trying to do. If the ball comes down the middle, they are not going to

:36:56.:36:59.

give the players a soft let, the players have to play that ball. They

:37:00.:37:07.

do not like it. But it really did seem as if there was space for a

:37:08.:37:08.

shot. For once, Grant found wanting down

:37:09.:37:47.

that for handball. -- Grant found wanting down that forehand wall.

:37:48.:38:07.

Same again. He gets a let that time. Still, both teams just a little bit

:38:08.:38:17.

cagey and not really willing to take the attack on. At least not the

:38:18.:38:20.

extreme attack yet. A pity he did not think Matthew had

:38:21.:38:42.

got one up early on. A nice shot from Grant. He pulled

:38:43.:38:57.

Palmer a little bit away from the wall and he saw the space, and just

:38:58.:39:03.

punched his wrist past Palmer into the back of the court. That was the

:39:04.:39:08.

first shot he did not think Matthew had got up. I think you might have.

:39:09.:39:19.

-- I think he might have. That is one of David Palmer's best shots,

:39:20.:39:24.

his volley drop shot into the front left corner. But Grant is so quick

:39:25.:39:29.

in there so he can punch the ball down the line. Or he can snap the

:39:30.:39:33.

ball crosscourt or even play a little drop shot. So many options

:39:34.:39:39.

from that area, so David Palmer has to be quite careful. That is his go

:39:40.:39:43.

to area and he has to make sure when he goes for it, but it is going to

:39:44.:39:49.

be good. -- that it is going to be good.

:39:50.:40:16.

England had two chances to get the hit and could not make it and the

:40:17.:40:23.

Aussies find one themselves. The shorter the rallies are, the more

:40:24.:40:27.

the ball will slow down. And that will promote even further play at

:40:28.:40:34.

the front of the court, it will be a little bit more interesting for

:40:35.:40:35.

spectators at home. That must have felt a little

:40:36.:41:17.

vulnerable for the Englishman, two Aussies descending on him from

:41:18.:41:18.

either side. Is that a let? Another shot from

:41:19.:42:44.

Matthew into the middle to set things up there. Absolutely. And a

:42:45.:42:48.

nice little punch volley from Adrian Grant. It has been so successful for

:42:49.:42:54.

him throughout this event. A nice rally, the pace picked up a little

:42:55.:42:57.

bit, it is the middle of the game, 5-4. Whichever team manages a two

:42:58.:43:05.

point spread, can clean up the first game. A crucial time. Well played,

:43:06.:43:13.

Cameron Pilley. There was the chaos you were talking about earlier on.

:43:14.:43:21.

Lynn those little trickle boasts. Sending the ball even further into

:43:22.:43:23.

the middle, that side spin. It is nip and tuck

:43:24.:43:45.

through this early -middle part of the opening game.

:43:46.:44:13.

Great shot from Palmer. great 1-2-mac. Whacked crosscourt

:44:14.:44:25.

into the net and that is what makes doubles so great.

:44:26.:44:58.

Extraordinary precision down that wall.

:44:59.:45:06.

Then again from Palmer, he is having a hot streak right now, he is making

:45:07.:45:14.

the difference. The play goes over to the left wall and

:45:15.:45:18.

the difference. The play goes over has a chance, he did start in the

:45:19.:45:20.

front left corner but Adrian Grant was covering so now he has hit two

:45:21.:45:24.

in a row and that is crucial. Well

:45:25.:45:53.

intervention there. Quite a such slow ball by Palmer. A lot easier to

:45:54.:45:57.

play that kind of shocked when the ball comes very hard. It is just a

:45:58.:46:02.

reaction shot. But when the ball is dropping and slow, it is hard to

:46:03.:46:08.

control. Stopped a run of four successive points for the

:46:09.:46:09.

Australians. Yes. Huge forehand that time from

:46:10.:46:33.

Grant. A lot of variety up and down that left wall. We have seen before,

:46:34.:46:37.

a little drop shot and then he flips it around the outside of the ball to

:46:38.:46:39.

bring the ball back into the wall. So the standard is ready picking up

:46:40.:46:58.

now. Palmer and Grant the most players right now. -- the most

:46:59.:47:03.

influential players right now. Not quite. Cameron Pilley finishing

:47:04.:48:25.

on an error. It was a super Rally, full of innovation. Nice rally, a

:48:26.:48:31.

bit of cat and mouse Adrian Grant and David Palmer of the left side

:48:32.:48:34.

wall, the forehand for a drink and be backhand for David. Maybe fatigue

:48:35.:48:41.

is a factor, here, from playing his previous match.

:48:42.:49:23.

Nick Matthew and Adrian Grant, hoping to get away with that. The

:49:24.:49:33.

immediate applause, try to cover up the potential problem. It seems to

:49:34.:49:37.

be a tactic with the players to influence the referee. It was a nice

:49:38.:49:40.

shot from Adrian Grant but the ball sat up a little bit from Cameron

:49:41.:49:42.

Pilley. Another exhausting rally a terrific

:49:43.:50:39.

stretch from Nick Matthew. He had to be very steady on the right wall.

:50:40.:50:42.

He's not doing anything wrong but not doing anything spectacular right

:50:43.:50:45.

now. That is quite often what we see, one player playing one role,

:50:46.:50:49.

and the other playing the other role, the attacker and the defender.

:50:50.:50:54.

They seem to be majoring on the forehand side of Adrian Grant. Nick

:50:55.:50:58.

Matthew is probably only playing 25% of the balls. That is obviously part

:50:59.:51:07.

of the Aussies' plan. Palmer, not able to get down to the ball. He has

:51:08.:51:12.

a great shot crosscourt. The ball stayed very low, and that was a kill

:51:13.:51:16.

from Nick Matthew. But normally, Palmer just bends his lower back and

:51:17.:51:20.

stretches out to get the ball. So, England, two points away from taking

:51:21.:51:22.

the opening game. this game is not over. I love the

:51:23.:52:06.

way Palmer rolled over this shot. Very tight to the ball, just

:52:07.:52:10.

flicking his wrists up an over it, which again, brought the spin of the

:52:11.:52:13.

front wall, bringing it closer to the wall. This is the phenomenal

:52:14.:52:14.

shot. It just clicked Palmer, as it went

:52:15.:53:07.

through. -- clipped Palmer. LAUGHTER

:53:08.:53:30.

Never in doubt. There is a little bit of doubt with the players, about

:53:31.:53:34.

whether they should stop. A lot of them want to keep on going because

:53:35.:53:38.

they have had to let before. -- they have had no lets before. Again, a

:53:39.:53:53.

perfect length. Now we are tied up. It just would not come out. There is

:53:54.:53:59.

no team that is dominating the other right now. It is the odd point, here

:54:00.:54:01.

and there. A really good play from the

:54:02.:54:28.

English. Nick Matthew did that a couple of shots before, saw that

:54:29.:54:31.

Palmer was a bit slow to play at, and from the back of the cold this

:54:32.:54:35.

time, again, Palmer not quite ready to the shops. -- for the shot.

:54:36.:54:42.

England with game point. Yes, super shot from Palmer. I

:54:43.:55:00.

thought for a moment they might be going for a let. So, 10-10. It is

:55:01.:55:06.

sudden death, the next point wins the game.

:55:07.:56:01.

What a finish! Adrian Grant with one of his best forehand of the game.

:56:02.:56:08.

And it decides the game. of his best forehand of the game.

:56:09.:56:18.

forehands. 29 minutes, it took. But Adrian Grant with a touch of

:56:19.:56:23.

brilliance. It was not just Adrian Grant, obviously a great shot to

:56:24.:56:25.

finish off but Nick Matthew, right from the return of serve, started

:56:26.:56:30.

hammering the ball, every single shot crosscourt Palmer. That is what

:56:31.:56:31.

great sportsmen do, they when someone is a bit off ball.

:56:32.:56:35.

Maybe they are starting when someone is a bit off ball.

:56:36.:56:39.

fatigued and they are not playing in the same position.

:56:40.:56:43.

fatigued and they are not playing in rallies earlier, Nick Matthew scored

:56:44.:56:45.

two points with the low, hard crosscourt, dying into the side

:56:46.:56:48.

wall. He wanted to find the angle and humans did but

:56:49.:56:49.

wall. He wanted to find the angle back to play the loose shot and

:56:50.:56:52.

Grant put it away. Great back to play the loose shot and

:56:53.:56:56.

conviction, great way to play a big point from both of those guys.

:56:57.:57:17.

There was nothing in it. It looked for a lot of the game as if the

:57:18.:57:24.

Australians were the likely winners. Yes, it was Marie hard to pick a

:57:25.:57:27.

dominant team. It was good to see the English team being a bit more

:57:28.:57:32.

attacking than yesterday. -- it was very hard. They were very

:57:33.:57:35.

attritional against Scotland yesterday. Maybe not the most

:57:36.:57:38.

exciting match to watch but very effective. Today, we saw them really

:57:39.:57:42.

create a lot of pace when they needed it and then take their

:57:43.:57:47.

chances as well. A word about Nick Matthew, saying however when shall

:57:48.:57:50.

he was in the last point and he seems to be more influential in the

:57:51.:57:54.

match. He was almost being drained out of it because they were

:57:55.:57:57.

concentrating on grant so much, but as the game developed, he was much

:57:58.:58:02.

more of an influence. Especially the last rally, he got into it a bit

:58:03.:58:08.

more. Adrian Grant was seeing most of the ball. Nick's was to be very

:58:09.:58:11.

steady. But the weight he played the last one, he really forced

:58:12.:58:13.

involvement into the game and it was great to see. -- the way he played.

:58:14.:58:20.

And once more we see the super length from Palmer. While this goes

:58:21.:58:25.

on, it is extraordinary to think that only a few weeks ago, Nick

:58:26.:58:34.

Matthew Haddin the operation. -- had a knee operation. It seemed risky

:58:35.:58:38.

with the games in mind but he has obviously had the best advice

:58:39.:58:41.

because he has hardly had an easy way, winning the singles and now in

:58:42.:58:45.

the final match in the doubles. It has held up fine.

:58:46.:58:47.

the final match in the doubles. It has held It is most unbelievable,

:58:48.:58:50.

how he has managed to back up. Talking to these guys before, Nick

:58:51.:58:54.

Matthew, in his rehabilitation, most of it was off the court. It was only

:58:55.:58:59.

a week before the tournament, after four weeks out, that he started

:59:00.:59:02.

getting back onto court. So what he has done in the last couple of weeks

:59:03.:59:06.

is incredible. The format probably helps, in that you get weaker

:59:07.:59:10.

opponents earlier on so you can feel your way into it. That is a good

:59:11.:59:15.

point, the Commonwealth Games yield those kind of first and second round

:59:16.:59:19.

match ups even though it is incredibly tough towards the end. It

:59:20.:59:21.

would have allowed him to feel it out, as you say. What a fine into

:59:22.:59:28.

the game from Nick Matthew. Let's see how he goes in the second. -- a

:59:29.:59:31.

fine end to the game. not quite pick the length. Palmer is

:59:32.:00:24.

one of the most stubborn athletes in the world, 38 years of age right

:00:25.:00:30.

now, but you can see that his movement is a bit laboured

:00:31.:00:33.

sometimes, but when he only has one step to the ball, he is one of the

:00:34.:00:39.

most dangerous players, if not the most dangerous. And that is why.

:00:40.:00:43.

Exactly like that, he sees the opportunity and he is razor sharp in

:00:44.:00:49.

his delivery. This was important for the Australian team, you saw the

:00:50.:00:53.

Australian team bouncing literally, you could see the look in the eyes

:00:54.:00:57.

of Nick Matthew. They could see it and feel it, and now the Australians

:00:58.:01:00.

are stemming the momentum of the English team.

:01:01.:01:35.

UMPIRE: Down. Matthew, not the best start from You

:01:36.:01:47.

Me at Six at the start of this game. -- Grant. A winner out of nowhere

:01:48.:02:05.

from Matthew, there. Dad has been successful, he will play that shot

:02:06.:02:08.

realising that David Palmer is hanging back a bit. James Willstrop,

:02:09.:02:14.

who was beaten by Matthew of course in the final of the men's singles.

:02:15.:02:43.

He is allowed the odd mistake, Matthew. I think he was chancing it

:02:44.:03:17.

there, Palmer. You can see that the ball clips him as he goes to the

:03:18.:03:21.

back wall. There was no real interference, there. Not a happy

:03:22.:03:38.

bunny, David Palmer. The lead narrows to two.

:03:39.:04:05.

That was a great shot from Adrian Grant. When Adrian Grant steps over

:04:06.:04:14.

onto the forehand side, his left foot over, carving underneath the

:04:15.:04:23.

ball, steady every single time. It is lower, in doubles, just 13

:04:24.:04:25.

inches, and he took advantage there. That was a little bit ambitious

:04:26.:05:45.

there. It was ambitious but they need to do that, as soon as they

:05:46.:05:52.

feel that their movements are a bit more laboured than the English team,

:05:53.:05:57.

so maybe the emphasis on the Aussie team is to finish off the point of

:05:58.:06:01.

it quicker. Three points in a row now for England.

:06:02.:06:17.

APPLAUSE He really crunches that, Cameron

:06:18.:06:28.

Pilley. You can see how low it stays, 13 inches. Four inches

:06:29.:06:36.

difference does not seem like a lot, but those four inches add another 18

:06:37.:06:41.

inches or even two feet to the front of the court, because you have to go

:06:42.:06:45.

in and come back and it is difficult to appreciate

:06:46.:06:49.

in and come back and it is difficult caught on camera. UMPIRE: No let.

:06:50.:06:54.

For the uninitiated caught on camera. UMPIRE: No let.

:06:55.:07:13.

Pushing out the side walls. That was a rare mistake from Matthew.

:07:14.:08:00.

A critical time, another point here for the Australians and they will

:08:01.:08:05.

feel as though they are almost there.

:08:06.:08:11.

feel as though they are almost go for it. It was almost an amazing

:08:12.:08:28.

volley. He just clips it. He gives the English a little window of

:08:29.:08:31.

opportunity to come back here and finish off the match two games. --

:08:32.:08:38.

in two games. Just too good. Exquisite touch. And

:08:39.:09:12.

not only exquisite touch but the position that he was in, such a big

:09:13.:09:18.

guy, six foot four, he spreads himself so hard to get past. The

:09:19.:09:23.

lead once again stretches to three, just a bit of contact between Palmer

:09:24.:09:25.

and Grant, it was unintentional. UMPIRE: Let. Let has been called.

:09:26.:10:16.

You probably heard the referee saying the decision on the Palmer

:10:17.:10:20.

pick up right there, Grant holds up his hand, and he says it was good.

:10:21.:10:25.

It did look as though it was all right but it was touch and go,

:10:26.:10:26.

though. Oh, that was a wonderful shot again

:10:27.:11:03.

from Parma. His instincts are amazing. Yes, the way he reacted,

:11:04.:11:09.

bending his knees just enough to get his racket under the ball and get a

:11:10.:11:14.

bit more control to punch it in. You see the way he gets lower, he is

:11:15.:11:19.

such a big guy, to do that under pressure is a great shot.

:11:20.:11:29.

38 years of age, his instinct are so quick. Palmer is being put under

:11:30.:11:41.

pressure but his defensive skills have been good, you can see him

:11:42.:11:45.

playing well across the court, Nick Matthew playing a fade Kiel, he was

:11:46.:11:50.

struggling to get his body low enough, but into the front left

:11:51.:11:55.

corner, his movement has been great. -- kill.

:11:56.:12:19.

Matthew, it was so good to see that, a dad nick. When he gets the ball,

:12:20.:12:32.

he is doing something great with it. This is bread-and-butter for Nick

:12:33.:12:33.

Matthew. What a shot from Adrian Grant. Yes,

:12:34.:13:52.

very difficult to read, he was falling back so the natural shot was

:13:53.:13:56.

to play at higher down the wall but he fires it in in that boast. Early

:13:57.:14:03.

on, terrific defence from Matthew because it was fired like a rival

:14:04.:14:09.

shot from Cameron Pilley. He has not missed one of those, Cameron Pilley

:14:10.:14:14.

is hitting it half an inch above the line every time. Nick Matthew puts

:14:15.:14:18.

one foot over and his racket over and he picks it up every time. 5-9

:14:19.:14:35.

becomes 7-9. What a devastating return that was

:14:36.:14:54.

from Pilley. They are daring to go for it. It gives them three-game

:14:55.:14:56.

points. Just missed. And we go to a deciding

:14:57.:15:11.

game. Just a few words between Palmer and

:15:12.:15:29.

Nick Matthew, but that is the situation. It is nice we have a

:15:30.:15:39.

deciding game between these two teams, because there really has been

:15:40.:15:43.

nothing to choose between them, not one dominance Timor was dominant

:15:44.:15:52.

tactic -- not been one dominant team or one dominant tactic.

:15:53.:16:05.

If you can control the left service box, assume you can block them out a

:16:06.:16:17.

bit, not quite as much dumber but certainly, if Palmer does not

:16:18.:16:21.

dominate that area, Adrian Grant brings everything up. It is a

:16:22.:16:24.

question of necessity for the Australian team. They can rely on

:16:25.:16:30.

picking off the points as and when the opportunities come. Normally you

:16:31.:16:37.

get a feeling about how the third game might go, but I haven't got

:16:38.:16:41.

that feeling. It is difficult to pick a favourite right now.

:16:42.:16:45.

Physically, the English team are probably in better shape. The two

:16:46.:16:48.

medal matches that Palmer and Pilley probably in better shape. The two

:16:49.:16:52.

medal matches that Palmer have played in this session are starting

:16:53.:16:55.

to have a bit of an effect, especially on 38-year-old Palmer.

:16:56.:17:01.

But will that be a deciding factor? The way he is moving one step in

:17:02.:17:05.

every direction, and his ability to hit winners and control shots from

:17:06.:17:07.

that 1's step is outstanding. Is a match fit for royalty. Prince

:17:08.:17:26.

Albert will be distributing the medals in a ceremony following this.

:17:27.:17:43.

The English are there, and here come the Australians to the court,

:17:44.:17:51.

The English are there, and here come game number three. The first game

:17:52.:17:58.

was a marathon, it went on for half an hour, the second was just over 15

:17:59.:18:00.

minutes. The shorter the an hour, the second was just over 15

:18:01.:18:10.

shorter the rallies, the more likely the Australians are to take it. That

:18:11.:18:15.

is key for the English team to lengthen the rallies, to try to find

:18:16.:18:20.

the space with the Australian team, to dig away at Palmer's movement if

:18:21.:18:28.

they can, if it is possible. Palmer is one of the most prolific medal

:18:29.:18:29.

winners in this sport. He is one of the most prolific medal

:18:30.:18:35.

medal earlier on today. Does he have the grit and desire to get a second

:18:36.:18:37.

one in the same day? Fascinating. but Nick Matthew but that and he

:18:38.:19:16.

dealt with it. A really good start for Nick

:19:17.:19:44.

Matthew. The more Matthew can get involved in this third game, the

:19:45.:19:47.

better it will be for the English team.

:19:48.:20:47.

Close... A fine shot from Parma, but he was impeded.

:20:48.:21:30.

Outstanding start to game number three. A nice change of direction.

:21:31.:21:39.

See how quickly Grant was onto that shot? David Palmer had to cover the

:21:40.:21:47.

corner. The slight physical benefit for the English players, you can see

:21:48.:21:49.

them really pushing up the court now.

:21:50.:22:58.

This is the most actress in a rally we have had for some while.

:22:59.:24:07.

After all that, a letter called. The pick-up call was good. That is the

:24:08.:24:16.

kind of rally that, with the lead, the Australians are losing a bit of

:24:17.:24:20.

sharpness. It is the kind of rally that the English need. That was good

:24:21.:24:25.

from the Australians. The English at the Menton, but they are the

:24:26.:24:28.

attacking team, and if they get a big lead, they will get more

:24:29.:24:31.

confident and go for more attacking shots. The subtext of that rally is,

:24:32.:24:37.

we are going to make you have to win this, and if you want to win it, you

:24:38.:24:41.

will have to pick your shots from risky areas at the back of the

:24:42.:24:47.

court. The subtext is good, but with the substances that, we will wait

:24:48.:24:49.

and see. Beautiful lengthen from David

:24:50.:25:16.

Palmer. The quality of the shot was good also. David Palmer holds his

:25:17.:25:21.

position very well. Perfectly legitimate play when you get a shot

:25:22.:25:23.

like that. Set up nicely for him, but wasn't he

:25:24.:25:52.

brilliant in the way he put it away? This is one of the reasons why

:25:53.:25:57.

Nick Matthew has been such an amazing singles player and so

:25:58.:26:02.

successful at doubles. It is the way he manages to be so consistent and

:26:03.:26:06.

steadily with that forehand volley. Watch the care with which he put

:26:07.:26:07.

that one away. The smash and sit with a ferocious

:26:08.:26:56.

shot from Adrian Grant. Rant found the angle but he just did not know

:26:57.:27:00.

that his partner was going to be there. It happens once or twice a

:27:01.:27:02.

match. Frustrating. The Aussies are looking a bit more

:27:03.:27:19.

ragged than the English right now, but it is the deciding game of the

:27:20.:27:20.

gold medal match. He has been so good with that

:27:21.:27:48.

straight ball, but you have to cover the straight ball down the line.

:27:49.:27:53.

There was a space for Pilley to hit down the line and he threw the ball

:27:54.:27:57.

into the side wall. A great shot. They stay within sight.

:27:58.:29:26.

A phenomenal rally again. Precision all the way through, as well as

:29:27.:29:34.

pace, but it is Adrian Grant to make the mistakes. E has hit a couple of

:29:35.:29:41.

great shots as well as mistakes. It is difficult to say whether or not

:29:42.:29:44.

he should have gone for that. The fact that the Aussies have gone back

:29:45.:29:50.

to 4-4 is really a function of that rally. The emphasis is now on the

:29:51.:29:52.

English pair to finish it off. A tricky shot from Nick Matthew,

:29:53.:30:02.

tough to deal with for Pilley, but That has worked for Nick Matthew so

:30:03.:31:06.

many times this match. And he is actually behind Pilley when he plays

:31:07.:31:11.

that, very hard for David Palmer to see.

:31:12.:31:51.

Nick Matthew saying he might have been fortunate. Yes, that is

:31:52.:31:56.

possible. Cameron Pilley was the attacking player.

:31:57.:32:37.

Just a little shove from Adrian Grant. Even David Palmer was sent

:32:38.:32:43.

scurrying away. David Palmer straight back with

:32:44.:32:51.

another sublime shot. David Palmer straight back with What

:32:52.:33:10.

a shot, you see him bend over, he does not want to cramp up. He just

:33:11.:33:16.

follows through so well. He is so far back. So strong, there was no

:33:17.:33:23.

risk on that shop. He just used his shoulder, an incredible shot.

:33:24.:33:57.

It is getting tighter and tighter as we get to the nitty-gritty. No

:33:58.:34:03.

player really wants to sacrifice their position, they are going to

:34:04.:34:07.

keep on taking the middle ground. There will be a lot of traffic

:34:08.:34:09.

opens. That was sheer pace, the undoing for

:34:10.:34:27.

Nick Matthew. That has not happened often. But just as I said before,

:34:28.:34:32.

every shot they will play around the middle, there will be some sort of

:34:33.:34:36.

contact with the other player. They have to block it out and use the

:34:37.:34:38.

racquet head control. Another thunderous forehand drive

:34:39.:35:12.

from Cameron Pilley. Suddenly, the Australians looking good. If it was

:35:13.:35:20.

possible for him to get any taller, he cracked down on the ball. From

:35:21.:35:27.

6-4 down, the Australians have the lead.

:35:28.:35:41.

A bit of contact early on, and he has given the let. Two big men

:35:42.:36:22.

bumping into each other. Nick Matthew just pointing out to the

:36:23.:36:30.

referee that he has given a little hip check. But this is part of the

:36:31.:36:31.

game. Again, David Palmer with the dynamic

:36:32.:36:57.

finish. They are two points away. This is like climbing up a mountain

:36:58.:37:01.

for David Palmer, he is almost at the top. He has never won a gold

:37:02.:37:09.

medal, until today, and he is now two points away from a second gold

:37:10.:37:10.

medal. Well played, Adrian Grant. He was

:37:11.:37:41.

alert to that. The ball came over to David Palmer, and you see him bend

:37:42.:37:47.

his knees, he got a bit lower, but not quite long enough. A great shot

:37:48.:37:52.

from Adrian Grant, keeping the ball tight.

:37:53.:38:24.

Adrian Grant was definitely in the way.

:38:25.:38:49.

That was an extraordinary miss. He is owning in. These are the right

:38:50.:38:59.

shots to go for the David Palmer, he wants to win this, he is not going

:39:00.:39:04.

to use attrition. He wants to grab this. But that is the risk.

:39:05.:39:55.

That is the second one he has missed like that. A tired shot. It looked

:39:56.:40:04.

like it. Missing the last couple, maybe David Palmer should be

:40:05.:40:07.

thinking about consolidating believed they had. Cameron Pilley is

:40:08.:40:13.

the younger man, the man with the more powerful forehand. It is going

:40:14.:40:22.

to create a great team effort -- require a great team effort from

:40:23.:40:26.

either team to come through this. Three points in a row for the

:40:27.:40:26.

English. Yes. Contact there. Adrian Grant not

:40:27.:41:01.

particularly happy with David Palmer's move to his left. David

:41:02.:41:06.

Palmer taking up a lot of space. A let given. But Adrian Grant thought

:41:07.:41:11.

he was in a Adrian Grant. His let. Maybe not

:41:12.:41:12.

winner there. Adrian Grant. His let. Maybe not

:41:13.:41:28.

quite as good a shot as David Palmer would have liked, but it is nice to

:41:29.:41:33.

see that Cameron Pilley is trying to go for it. He did not want

:41:34.:41:37.

see that Cameron Pilley is trying to picked up, Adrian Grant, by David

:41:38.:41:37.

Palmer. If it goes to 10-10, it is sudden

:41:38.:41:49.

death. It is very tense now. All of the

:41:50.:42:39.

bowls are going to David Palmer, they do not want to give Cameron

:42:40.:42:42.

Pilley the chance to hit the winning shot. They are trying to take

:42:43.:42:48.

advantage that David Palmer might be feeling it physically, and he can

:42:49.:42:51.

sense the finish line, he won the gold medal so badly. He has had a

:42:52.:42:54.

few mistakes. A sensational rally. Twice, David

:42:55.:44:29.

Palmer went for it in different left, he could not make it. He is

:44:30.:44:35.

shaking his legs a bit. I wonder if cramp is starting to emerge. What a

:44:36.:44:45.

great finish that was. Match point. Incredible for Cameron Pilley, it

:44:46.:44:50.

was great events from David Palmer, but Cameron Pilley sensing his

:44:51.:44:58.

moment. Is David Palmer running on empty? Match point, Australia.

:44:59.:45:43.

A hand apology from David Palmer, but Adrian Grant wants nothing to do

:45:44.:45:50.

with it. David Palmer is playing shots in between his legs.

:45:51.:47:05.

difference. It is Australia who take gold again. What a great story for

:47:06.:47:15.

David Palmer, 38 years of age, father of two, coming out of

:47:16.:47:23.

retirement. Never got the gold. Came through the Mixed Doubles, now even

:47:24.:47:31.

more importantly for him, the Men's Doubles. They simply brilliant

:47:32.:47:34.

afternoon more importantly for him, the Men's

:47:35.:47:36.

Doubles. They simply brilliant for him, winner of the mixed 1.5 hours

:47:37.:47:43.

ago, now doubling up his eighth Commonwealth Games medal. His second

:47:44.:47:52.

gold. A super match. No wonder he takes the accolades. Out of

:47:53.:47:58.

retirement, onto the top of the podium what an afternoon for David

:47:59.:48:00.

Palmer. It was a fine match from start to

:48:01.:48:14.

finish. There was nothing to choose between them. One team could get

:48:15.:48:20.

momentum, the other could steal it back. One of the best doubles

:48:21.:48:25.

matches we have seen. A good effort from these guys. They have been very

:48:26.:48:32.

successful in the past, winning gold. Nick Matthew winning goal here

:48:33.:48:33.

this week. -- gold. Great for this pairing, who missed

:48:34.:48:58.

out in Delhi, bronze medallists. Pilley won the gold in the next, no

:48:59.:49:01.

gold for that man. Was that a stressful for you as

:49:02.:49:32.

everyone watching? Absolutely get a bit edgy with some of those dropped

:49:33.:49:40.

shots. A good match, entertaining, probably the match of the tournament

:49:41.:49:43.

in the doubles. There was a lot of skill on show. He just nudged me out

:49:44.:49:50.

the way, he is a big eye, they are two big eyes. They just controlled

:49:51.:49:52.

the middle. -- two big guys. two big eyes. They just controlled

:49:53.:50:05.

Australians love that? Palmer is very experienced, used his weight

:50:06.:50:09.

and height, making it very difficult. We were conscious of

:50:10.:50:16.

that, and used our tactics. I just have to say thank you to this guy

:50:17.:50:20.

for making it. We did not go on court at all. This guy was in a

:50:21.:50:28.

hospital bed five weeks ago. I am lucky just to be on court. Was that

:50:29.:50:32.

as well as you have played during the tournament? It was well

:50:33.:50:39.

contested, in terms of the two top seeds showing doubles as

:50:40.:50:43.

entertaining as it should be. Going for our shots, not just up and down.

:50:44.:50:48.

We were trying to move them back and forward. Very tight, who dares wins.

:50:49.:50:57.

An amazing week for you personally, I'd gold in the singles, now silver.

:50:58.:51:02.

You are always disappointed, that is the fighting spirit. If you are

:51:03.:51:08.

happy with a silver... They are a great team. David has spent his

:51:09.:51:14.

whole career going for the gold. It is like London buses, but you wait

:51:15.:51:22.

that long for one... Some of his shots, Adrian's backhand, just a bit

:51:23.:51:27.

too good, you have to take your hat off. Nobody can compete with that

:51:28.:51:36.

guys forehand. -- guide's forehand. An amazing week for English squash

:51:37.:51:41.

as a team? Unbelievable, testament to the team.

:51:42.:51:50.

as a team? Unbelievable, testament it at 38, why can't we come back. It

:51:51.:51:55.

is up to the youngsters to displace us. There is a legacy coming

:51:56.:52:00.

through. You have to be in the top eight in the world to make the

:52:01.:52:04.

singles team. That is testament to the lottery funding which came in

:52:05.:52:09.

when we were 16. We would not be there without it. Well done to both

:52:10.:52:16.

of you. You guys are the last English competitors on court. We had

:52:17.:52:21.

such a good time, top of the medal English competitors on court. We had

:52:22.:52:25.

table, shame we could not finish with the last gold. A great sign

:52:26.:52:33.

off, cheers. Very well done to them,

:52:34.:52:37.

away disappointed, picking up the silver in the Men's Doubles.

:52:38.:52:43.

are, the sun has come out, a glorious last day. That is it in

:52:44.:52:47.

terms of live action. I have been glorious last day. That is it in

:52:48.:52:52.

joined by three members of the men's hockey team, celebrating their

:52:53.:52:58.

first medal since it was introduced at the Commonwealth Games back in

:52:59.:53:11.

1998. Simon Mantell, Ali Dixon, what an afternoon. The way you came

:53:12.:53:15.

through against New Zealand? It was a bit like that. We had the lead,

:53:16.:53:23.

then got the equaliser. Pretty tense, so pleased to have got over

:53:24.:53:29.

the line with the bronze medal. What you make of your experience? Ending

:53:30.:53:37.

up with a bronze medal? Originally we said we wanted to make the final,

:53:38.:53:40.

disappointed to lose against Australia. We knew if we could put

:53:41.:53:46.

the demons to rest, if we got a medal today, we would be made up for

:53:47.:53:52.

it. Everything has been brilliant hair, the feed, everything. -- the

:53:53.:54:05.

food. How much has this done for hockey? What is it done for the

:54:06.:54:09.

profile of the sport? It is fantastic. We had a good Olympics

:54:10.:54:14.

with the girls getting bronze, the men finishing fourth at the World

:54:15.:54:19.

Cup. We are very happy, with us picking up the bronze, the women

:54:20.:54:22.

getting a silver, another push for the sport. It has been great, a lot

:54:23.:54:28.

of people watching. Great support from all over. The steady

:54:29.:54:34.

improvement improved under your coach, Bobby Crutchley, fourth place

:54:35.:54:41.

used to be your perennial position, that you have broken that. We have

:54:42.:54:49.

broken through that. It is the most difficult push to make. We have

:54:50.:54:53.

started to perform well in these tough games, today, walking away

:54:54.:54:58.

with the bronze medal, absolutely chuffed. What about the backing of

:54:59.:55:06.

the crowd? It has been incredible, feeling like a home crowd, we were

:55:07.:55:11.

not sure what to expect, what reception we would get. It has been

:55:12.:55:16.

incredible. Fully supporting us, we were glad we were able to get the

:55:17.:55:21.

bronze. You have two build on this, the European Championships coming

:55:22.:55:27.

up? Next summer, in London, a great opportunity for people who have not

:55:28.:55:31.

watched hockey live to come and see what it is all about. A fast,

:55:32.:55:37.

exciting game, a lot of goals, try to get hold of tickets. How far can

:55:38.:55:43.

England go? We can do extremely well, we have shown in the past, how

:55:44.:55:47.

well we have done, both teams will be looking to make the final.

:55:48.:55:53.

Hopefully coming away with a medal. Brilliant, give them a round of

:55:54.:55:56.

applause. They have picked up a bronze medal. A live studio

:55:57.:56:06.

audience! Why not? Picking up a bronze medal. Talking of headlines,

:56:07.:56:12.

let's break off from the action for a news update on BBC Three.

:56:13.:56:19.

The atmosphere, it's incredible here.

:56:20.:56:37.

Every anthem, every beat, every moment.

:56:38.:56:40.

Get amongst the action all summer long

:56:41.:56:44.

What? We're having a staring contest, right? No.

:56:45.:57:05.

What? We're having a staring contest, right? No.

I leave the ashram, travel halfway across the world to find my father,

:58:27.:58:30.

Oh, well. As Vashrati says, gotta keep smiling!

We don't tend to use the bathroom together here.

:58:39.:58:40.

All right, well, I'll catch you later.

:58:41.:58:42.

This ashram of yours, it might be a cult.

:58:43.:58:46.

I take it back, he's definitely Cuckoo's son.

:58:47.:58:50.

Hello there, good to have you with us, we are in Glasgow, host of the

:58:51.:59:17.

20th Commonwealth Games. We just spoke to three members of the

:59:18.:59:21.

England men's hockey team who picked up a bronze medal by beating New

:59:22.:59:28.

Zealand. What about gold and silver? Australia versus India saw Australia

:59:29.:59:36.

coming out on top in front of the Indian crowd. Could they get revenge

:59:37.:59:41.

this time round? They faced off with the gold up for grabs.

:59:42.:59:52.

We are in the men's gold match, Australia in green and gold

:59:53.:00:00.

attacking the goal to our right. India in their changed strip of

:00:01.:00:12.

white with orange flashes. Australia finding their way into the Indian

:00:13.:00:18.

circle straightaway. The pitch is pretty slow, the ball eventually

:00:19.:00:24.

drifts behind. All of the rain has slowed things down on the artificial

:00:25.:00:33.

turf. Brown for Australia. Some slipping and sliding as the players

:00:34.:00:39.

get used to the watery conditions underfoot.

:00:40.:00:46.

The sun is coming out now. We will get a mixture of sunshine and

:00:47.:00:58.

showers. Australia keeping the ball in, a long corner for Australia.

:00:59.:01:07.

It is taken quickly to the edge of the circle, India trying to defend,

:01:08.:01:15.

the ball goes behind. Another long corner. Taken by Brown. Trying

:01:16.:01:25.

the ball goes behind. Another long push it into the circle. Round

:01:26.:01:25.

keeping it short. push it into the circle. Round

:01:26.:01:34.

possession. Driving it in, hitting the post, flying up and behind.

:01:35.:01:40.

possession. Driving it in, hitting Australia showing their intent, they

:01:41.:01:42.

are putting massive Australia showing their intent, they

:01:43.:01:50.

Indian defence, high intensity. That Australia showing their intent, they

:01:51.:01:54.

goalkeeper's helmet. Rattled him a bit. Having a bit of a laugh. I am

:01:55.:02:09.

not sure he will be laughing too much, the same thing happened in the

:02:10.:02:13.

semifinal, he took one right in the face. But it was great work.

:02:14.:02:19.

Straight off the helmet. A good header! He was not even trying to

:02:20.:02:24.

get out of the way. The goalkeepers have to fight their urge to turn

:02:25.:02:29.

their head out of the way, because they have the protection where it is

:02:30.:02:35.

needed at the front of the head, because your natural reaction is to

:02:36.:02:39.

turn your head. He is back between the sticks for India.

:02:40.:02:52.

Australia looking lively in the early stages.

:02:53.:03:09.

It is clever play from Australia. Australia really getting into the

:03:10.:03:21.

danger area. He got one on the knee. But India's body language is not as

:03:22.:03:27.

positive as yesterday. They are in for a big fight today, they have not

:03:28.:03:29.

beaten Australia for a long time. He for a big fight today, they have not

:03:30.:03:42.

He is important to India's cause. But he has been replaced for the

:03:43.:04:11.

He will get some attention. India will hope he can return. India

:04:12.:04:19.

maintain possession. The shot was a little ragged. An

:04:20.:04:48.

Australian stick out of the way. But India proving to themselves that

:04:49.:04:51.

they can penetrate this Australian defence. It is exactly what they

:04:52.:04:57.

need for their own confidence. He was quick yesterday, that hope he

:04:58.:05:01.

gets a bit of space to run into today. A chat between the umpires. A

:05:02.:05:12.

bit of needle in there. He is called back, it has to be

:05:13.:05:37.

taken again. He was looking to get a quick free kick away. It looked like

:05:38.:05:42.

he was impeded by the Australians, but was still brought back.

:05:43.:06:13.

The Australian girls watching from the stand, they have already got

:06:14.:06:24.

their gold medal. The number 20 is a live wire for Australia, they will

:06:25.:06:27.

look to get some service to them -- to him. That was close. That was a

:06:28.:06:36.

great ball. Just looking for a deflection. Did not quite get enough

:06:37.:06:45.

of it. The number 17 has had a really lively start for Australia.

:06:46.:06:52.

Another positive move from Australia. He could not quite direct

:06:53.:07:01.

the ball towards the Indian goal. That shows what Australia are

:07:02.:07:04.

looking to do, get the ball into the danger area. He was just a touch off

:07:05.:07:08.

the pace. It will be India's ball. An

:07:09.:08:04.

important part of their armoury, big aerials from the back. He has got a

:08:05.:08:10.

lot of power, but not that kind of aerial. Saved. He got his stick to

:08:11.:08:17.

the ball. Australia trying to find annex it

:08:18.:09:11.

rude. -- and X it route. The Indian players were hoping for a

:09:12.:09:53.

penalty corner. It was good pressure from India, they have been working

:09:54.:09:59.

very hard with Terry Walsh. A great attacking centre forward, he was.

:10:00.:10:04.

Their fitness levels have come up, and they are attacking the numbers.

:10:05.:10:11.

They are using their fast runners to get into space.

:10:12.:10:46.

There is just time for India to calm things down. It has been a busy

:10:47.:10:53.

first ten minutes. The gold-medal match. That is what you get from

:10:54.:11:01.

Australia, a hard first ten minutes. If you can weather the storm and

:11:02.:11:04.

stay in the game, you have got a chance.

:11:05.:11:10.

That was really good work, coming down the centre, from the Indian

:11:11.:11:20.

number 26. He passed for Australian players.

:11:21.:11:34.

No penalty corner. He found a beautiful crossfield pass. He got

:11:35.:11:57.

himself into the danger area, I think he should have shot straight

:11:58.:11:58.

away, but he looked for the backhand think he should have shot straight

:11:59.:12:01.

were getting back into position. think he should have shot straight

:12:02.:12:09.

it shows what they have got. You cannot help but feel they have got

:12:10.:12:13.

to score early, or else this Australian team will have too much

:12:14.:12:14.

for them. Australia get the first

:12:15.:12:22.

corner of the match. That is Australia get the first

:12:23.:12:27.

work from the Aussies, they No arguments from

:12:28.:12:45.

referral available to them, No arguments from

:12:46.:12:51.

knew that it was a valid penalty corner

:12:52.:12:58.

Ciriello is poised. Keep an eye on Ockenden as well.

:12:59.:13:10.

Ciriello finds the goal for Australia, they are off the mark. He

:13:11.:13:13.

scores. That is how efficient this is. It is

:13:14.:13:29.

close enough to the goalkeeper for there to be a bit of confusion, but

:13:30.:13:35.

a low shot, well worked. He just got a leg to the ball, but could not

:13:36.:13:37.

keep it out. India will hope for a quick reply.

:13:38.:13:56.

They have got good movement coming forward. They have shown flashes of

:13:57.:14:00.

solid attacking technique. But Australia are breaking again.

:14:01.:14:09.

India is Cape. The longer this game goes on, the more tired India will

:14:10.:14:19.

get, chasing after the best in the world, they will be

:14:20.:14:29.

able to keep the intensity up. It is not a hot day, it will suit them.

:14:30.:14:41.

The player is back taking an early knock on his knee.

:14:42.:14:59.

It has been pretty one-sided for the first 11 minutes of this match.

:15:00.:16:23.

Stray Leah had the early break, with Ciriello's penalty corner.

:16:24.:16:44.

They move so fast. It was good covering from India.

:16:45.:17:09.

five metres. -- that will be. Terrific goalkeeping. Standing tall,

:17:10.:17:24.

making himself fit. -- big. A green card for being a bit too rough in

:17:25.:17:31.

the tackle. The umpires stamping their for a tea on this game early

:17:32.:17:33.

on. Eddie Ockenden sitting down. India doing well so far with this

:17:34.:17:56.

lively Australian team. Could not twist and turn quickly enough.

:17:57.:18:08.

Goodspeed, just slipping. Philpott is asking for it. Nice

:18:09.:18:27.

first touch. Australia with options here. Two men in the circle. Sworn

:18:28.:18:52.

driving in. -- Swann. Those in stakes giving India bit of time, but

:18:53.:18:58.

they are still under the cosh. Australia's physical presence

:18:59.:19:03.

causing trouble. They had a close match in the pool, Australia doing

:19:04.:19:14.

well, India doing well to come back. Looking for the flick. Umbrellas and

:19:15.:19:24.

wet weather clothes going on. The next band of rain reaching us.

:19:25.:19:40.

Swann. Orchard fighting for the ball, comes to Mitton. Little half

:19:41.:20:03.

volley, over the top. There is a safety fence to protect the crowd.

:20:04.:20:08.

It is a bit higher at the other end, I think. All the way back to his

:20:09.:20:40.

team-mate. Sony -- Sunil taking it on. A chance for Australia to edge

:20:41.:20:47.

forward. Brown picking it up on the right.

:20:48.:20:55.

Orchard. Taking it to the edge, foot on the ball, penalty corner to

:20:56.:21:10.

Australia. They scored courtesy of Chris Cirello at their first

:21:11.:21:18.

opportunity. Jurist touching the foot. Australia get number two. --

:21:19.:21:38.

just touching. Beale will injected. Cirello is off, so it may be Mitton.

:21:39.:21:50.

Just swapping positions. Hitting the runner on the way out. It was high,

:21:51.:22:21.

above the knee. Rip -- Rapinder Singh taking one for the team. It is

:22:22.:22:30.

noisy in the sky above, helicopters chasing the cycling road race taking

place this afternoon. Kavanagh leaving it. High ball

choice for Australia. Beautifully controlled. India on their way down

the right-hand side. Sent back towards the other end. Picked up by

Australia. Solid Indian defence.

slippery on this turf. India going well, bouncing up. Directing

:23:31.:23:39.

operations on the right-hand side, a massive Indian assault on the goal,

:23:40.:23:42.

looking for the penalty corner, they get it. Won eventually by Sunil.

:23:43.:23:58.

Australia is going down the right-hand side, then the ball back.

of options for him. Saved. Good defence by Australia. Taking it off

the line. A big strike, he faces the ball, does not switch. It was really

Unfairly challenged by Akashdeep. Finding your way out of there,

:26:56.:27:04.

good defensive work for India. Eddie Ockenden. Too wide. Philpott.

:27:05.:27:54.

A bit optimistic. India in a forward attacking position. Australia

:27:55.:28:16.

getting the decision. Cirello trying to lift it up. Well controlled. The

:28:17.:28:29.

ball bouncing favourably for Whetton. A lot of work well done by

corner. The ball being picked up, driving through, the Indian player

:29:11.:29:15.

just barging across. Fergus Kavanagh picking up the

:29:16.:29:28.

corner. Stick tackle called outside of the circle.

:29:29.:29:35.

Australia are ready. Cirello will fancy another part. He has got it,

:29:36.:29:49.

he has scored. Australia League 2-0. -- lead 2-0. This time puts it to

:29:50.:30:00.

the goalkeeper's right-hand side, he may have been expecting it high in

:30:01.:30:03.

the air. India have men on the line, not as effective. A little

:30:04.:30:11.

touch on the goalkeeper's stick. Chris Cirello eighth goal of the

:30:12.:30:12.

tournament. Knowles trying to release Beale.

:30:13.:30:32.

:31:27.:31:30.

High and careless. -- in the D. Australia really keeping down the

:31:31.:31:44.

numbers so far. They are pushing India back and back, finding it hard

:31:45.:31:47.

to get forward in numbers. The pass failed to find Ramandeep

:31:48.:32:00.

Singh. The basic passing is letting them down at times.

:32:01.:32:40.

Given away in a dangerous area by India.

:32:41.:32:55.

Sardar Singh rescued the situation with good stick work. The rain comes

:32:56.:32:59.

again. Australia thinking it was off a

:33:00.:33:08.

foot. That is Sardar Singh at pace.

:33:09.:33:41.

Akashdeep Singh running across the Australian defence, and Sardar Singh

:33:42.:33:42.

nearly found his mark. It is a pile-up in front of the

:33:43.:34:38.

Indian goal. A good bit of play. Great interplay.

:34:39.:35:02.

Quick passing. The goalkeeper out. He got out early, he got in the face

:35:03.:35:07.

and closed the ball down. Simon Orchard could not put the ball over

:35:08.:35:10.

the top of him. That was the stick they were worried about. Gurbaj

:35:11.:35:14.

Singh lifted the stick up. The goals from Chris Ciriello, two

:35:15.:35:34.

of them from the penalty corner specialist, separating the side.

:35:35.:36:08.

This might be the last chance for India to get something out of the

:36:09.:36:12.

half. That will be that. The first half

comes to an end. After a dominant display from Australia, they have to

Sardar with a suspension.

:37:18.:38:38.

He got there in the end. Sardar Singh has had a rest. He was

:38:39.:38:47.

suspended in the last pool match, because he did rather large sliding

:38:48.:38:56.

tackle. So, he has had a rest, and he will be fresher than the rest of

his team. A repeat of the final from four

:38:58.:39:34.

years ago. A bit one-sided there. Yes, Australia one 8-0, in front of

:39:35.:39:41.

a packed house in Delhi, on a very hot day.

:39:42.:39:49.

A long corner for Australia. It is a question of India hanging in there,

:39:50.:39:59.

keeping the school as it is, and trying to pinch something up the

:40:00.:40:04.

other end. They will get two or three good opportunities, and if

:40:05.:40:08.

they can keep Australia out and keep the score down, they have got a

:40:09.:40:12.

chance. But if the score starts to run away, they have no chance

:40:13.:40:13.

whatsoever. The players getting a warning from

:40:14.:40:39.

the umpire. The umpires are from England and Scotland.

:40:40.:40:49.

A fairly pedestrian start to the second half in this gold-medal

:40:50.:40:52.

match. Mark Knowles just waiting for a few

:40:53.:41:46.

seconds, asking Matthew Swann to come forward.

:41:47.:41:53.

The cross was too far in front of Jacob Whetton. Yes, and a little bit

:41:54.:42:00.

high. But Australia are always dangerous, they can get the ball

:42:01.:42:05.

into that area, and they always have bodies. Their speciality is putting

:42:06.:42:16.

defences under pressure in their own backyard.

:42:17.:42:59.

Sardar Singh tried to release a man down the left. The ball has got to

:43:00.:43:09.

be taken from where the free hit was given.

:43:10.:43:34.

You do not see many mistakes from Aran Zalewski.

:43:35.:44:07.

There were two Indian sticks on the ball, and it was close to crossing

the goal line. A long corner. of the pitch. Australia still making

India work hard to get the ball out of their defensive area. Under

:45:54.:45:55.

control. Ramandeep Singh not able to deal

with the bounce. Chris Ciriello, the school of both Australian goals.

surely to another gold medal. Can India find some successful attacking

play? They may be able to, but I in 20 minutes. As soon as they get

:50:35.:50:41.

the ball, there are gold shirts asking them questions all the time.

:50:42.:50:52.

Again, no opportunity for a strike towards the goal. That is off the

:50:53.:50:57.

roof of the stand. Mitton looking a little bit sore, he

:50:58.:51:21.

was limping, may need some treatment from the bench. A high clearance

:51:22.:51:33.

from Beale. India can maintain the pressure. India's possession still.

:51:34.:51:58.

It is a bit like a fencing match like that, just trying to avoid the

:51:59.:52:07.

sticks. You are under pressure, trying to win a free get to get some

time to clear your lines. -- three hits. Orchard firing a forward,

for Chris Cirello, the forthcoming from Eddie Ockenden, in open play.

:54:40.:54:47.

He is there again, fancying another. Moves towards the D. Good save,

bouncing into the crowd, that could be nasty, that ball is hard.

Thankfully, no damage done. Someone has trousered that one. Sreejesh is

to Australia, then they have two face a tide of green and gold again.

again. As is so often the case, the bronze

:01:16.:01:36.

medal match proved to be a much tighter, more entertaining affair.

:01:37.:01:43.

Australia once again pressuring the Indian defence.

:01:44.:01:55.

A wild swing at the ball from Kieran Govers.

:01:56.:02:07.

The sticks are locked together. The Indians desperately claiming a

penalty corner. He had his stick held, but the umpire said it was an

accident. On both sides. Manpreet Singh hitting close to the

face of Simon Orchard. Apologies if you are hearing some flowery

The last ten minutes of hockey at the 20th Commonwealth Games.

:03:20.:03:31.

Australia will go away with all of the gold medals again, unless there

:03:32.:03:38.

is a miracle finish from India. Australia's men have won the gold

:03:39.:03:43.

medal at the last for Commonwealth Games, since 1998. The women have

:03:44.:03:51.

won in Malaysia, they took the bronze in Manchester, in Melbourne

:03:52.:03:57.

and Delhi it went to Australia, and they won again here last night.

:03:58.:04:03.

Australia again continuing to be the dominant force in Commonwealth Games

hockey. It is an Indian foot on the ball, an

:04:05.:04:24.

Australian free hit. Chris Ciriello stepped-up and stop that, finally.

:04:25.:04:33.

With the ball on the foot. The Australians are very steady at the

:04:34.:04:36.

back, they have seen the Indian attack, they do not panic, they put

bodies behind it. It is a great example to anybody who wants to BA

another goal. It did not take long before

:08:20.:08:36.

Australia were in possession of the ball.

:08:37.:08:49.

Hockey goalkeepers like doing that, they do not often get the chance. It

has to be just about the right height, bouncing around.

:08:56.:09:12.

Matthew Swann's passing has been superb throughout the tournament.

:09:13.:09:25.

The Australians say they left it too late.

:09:26.:11:41.

You can refer it, it, if discovering to be a corner. Can you hear me? The

:11:42.:11:51.

Indians say he is not five metres away when he is tackled. I have

:11:52.:11:56.

interpreted that he was. Can you check, please? Will do.

:11:57.:12:04.

They are having a look at whether the Australian player was five

:12:05.:12:10.

metres away from the ball when the free hit was taken. Was he?

:12:11.:12:20.

It was close. There is no magic spray like we had in the football

:12:21.:12:32.

World Cup. It is a bit of guesswork. Was he five metres away? That is the

:12:33.:12:36.

question. It is raining again. India are hoping to get a penalty

corner here. The decision will come from the video umpire, who is

away when the free hit is taken. It should be a penalty corner. There is

:13:13.:13:21.

no reason to change your decision. There you go, I got one wrong! It

:13:22.:13:36.

will be a restart from the bully. As the rain starts to thunder down

again. The Australians starting to

:13:38.:13:54.

celebrate their gold medal. The golden double again for the men and

:13:55.:14:06.

women in green and gold. The medal ceremony will follow shortly after

the inclusion of the match. The organisers will hope the rain clears

off the foot of Matt Gohdes. Australia running until the last

second of the gold-medal game. Can India get something out of

:14:56.:15:19.

this? It is all over here. The hooter will

:15:20.:15:38.

sound, Australia are the champions again. They have done the golden

:15:39.:15:49.

double. Another one-sided Commonwealth Games men's gold-medal

:15:50.:15:53.

match comes to its conclusion. A hat-trick for Chris Ciriello. Four

:15:54.:16:00.

goals to Australia, the forthcoming from Eddie Ockenden. India never

:16:01.:16:07.

really got going in this match. It was one-sided from the first whistle

:16:08.:16:20.

until the final hooter. Australia 4-0 India. India will take the

:16:21.:16:25.

silver. If ever there was a nailed on medal,

:16:26.:16:29.

it would have to be the Australian men in the hockey, that is their

:16:30.:16:35.

fifth successive golds, they have won every single competition going.

:16:36.:16:41.

India left to reflect what happened four years ago in Delhi. We're

final show, we thought we Commonwealth Games. As it is our

:17:11.:17:14.

Then there were those Royal photo bombs. The Queen with the Australian

hockey team. Prince Harry with the New Zealand coaches. Prince William

:17:27.:17:33.

alongside Sir Chris Foy. The biggest question was, can Richard' funk?

:17:34.:17:47.

Yes, he can. Clare balding is after your moments, what will you

remember, what has moved you over the last 11 days? Get in touch.

:17:52.:18:01.

Now a chance to relive the men's cycling road race. Just enough time

:18:02.:18:08.

to show you the best bits of a fabulous contest unfolding on the

:18:09.:18:11.

wet and slippery roads of Glasgow. Now the men faced 12 laps of the 14

:18:12.:18:32.

kilometres circuit. That is not a good start, you need some certain of

:18:33.:18:38.

its about 20 yards after leaving the start line. The Kenyan is one of the

:18:39.:18:48.

fences riders. Pressing on. These tactics are not something I would

:18:49.:18:51.

expect to see. Clearly a defined move. Australia deciding it is their

:18:52.:18:59.

responsibility to do the chase. Quite a high price to put them under

:19:00.:19:10.

pressure. Kenya expending a lot of energy. It does not look like he

:19:11.:19:18.

will get any company. Dennis has gone down. Very bad news for

:19:19.:19:24.

Australia. Right at the start as he went into the corner. Certainly not

:19:25.:19:33.

looking as comfortable as he was. That is to be expected. Still an

:19:34.:19:39.

awful long way to go. Here is a problem for Geraint Thomas. A very

:19:40.:19:45.

slow wheel change. I don't know who the mechanic is. That has cost him.

:19:46.:19:56.

The longer the race goes on, the harder it seems to rain, this is the

:19:57.:20:00.

worst we have seen by a long stretch. That could have been

:20:01.:20:07.

disastrous, an umbrella in your spokes. Good evasive action.

:20:08.:20:21.

Stupendous by the Isle of Man rider. Certainly not looking happy now. The

:20:22.:20:39.

race is on in a big way. He knows the chase is on. Suddenly a very

:20:40.:20:50.

hungry pack. Kennaugh will sit on the back, he cannot contribute and

:20:51.:20:54.

go with them. Look at the pain etched on his face. Epic ride by

:20:55.:21:01.

Kennaugh, he is losing touch. We come onto the finish. One lap to go

:21:02.:21:08.

in the Commonwealth Games men's Road race, nearly four hours in the

:21:09.:21:13.

saddle. One of these three will be crowned Commonwealth champion.

:21:14.:21:20.

Garang Thomas decides to go for it. A slight hesitation. Thomas going

:21:21.:21:24.

for glory. He has the gap, they cannot do anything about it. The gap

:21:25.:21:30.

going up all the time. Three quarters of the minute now. That is

:21:31.:21:36.

not two people riding to get back into contention. They know they are

:21:37.:21:40.

contesting the silver and bronze. What is the problem? A problem for

:21:41.:21:49.

Geraint Thomas. He has had to stop. I do not believe it. A puncture on

:21:50.:21:55.

the front wheel. This needs to be a good change. This makes things

:21:56.:22:01.

interesting. Oh, no! Unbelievable for Geraint Thomas. Suddenly they

:22:02.:22:07.

are right back in the race. Garang Thomas will win with a little bit of

:22:08.:22:18.

elbow room. -- Geraint Thomas. That puncture must've seemed like an

:22:19.:22:23.

eternity to sort out. What must have been going on in

:22:24.:22:27.

eternity to sort out. What must have stayed good, storming away ahead of

:22:28.:22:35.

Jack Bauer and Scott Thwaites. Those are the three who were left to

:22:36.:22:39.

contest the medals after Pete Kennaugh had been reeled in. So

:22:40.:22:48.

often the team player, now the glory will be his. Garang -- Garang --

:22:49.:23:07.

Geraint Thomas. It was tough out there, I have the mechanical with

:23:08.:23:11.

the chain. Unfortunately find to get back on. I do not have that

:23:12.:23:17.

acceleration out of the corners, I tried to time trial it. All going

:23:18.:23:23.

well until the puncture. I thought, here we go, what do I have to do? I

:23:24.:23:27.

had a big enough advantage to stay away. Unbelievable, easy to say,

:23:28.:23:35.

people may be, come on, I did not expect that after coming out of the

:23:36.:23:41.

Tour de France. I wanted to come and ride for Wales. Over the moon. To

:23:42.:23:47.

get a bronze and to win today, a great feeling. That was a very brave

:23:48.:23:59.

ride, take us through it? Yes, started, so wet, so dangerous, I

:24:00.:24:05.

just moved to the front, went on the first climb. I committed for half a

:24:06.:24:13.

lap, I thought one or two other guys will come across, and take the race

:24:14.:24:19.

from the front. I knew it was such a technical course. Organising a chase

:24:20.:24:28.

is hard. That did not happen. After a lap and a half, I was committed.

:24:29.:24:32.

Just to sit and go back to the peloton after using that energy

:24:33.:24:37.

would have been ridiculous. You have done us proud, that McIntosh bike,

:24:38.:24:46.

what are your emotions? The emotions are pretty strong. Although I am sad

:24:47.:24:55.

I could not be at the front, it was such a privilege to be out there,

:24:56.:25:00.

getting such a good reaction all the way round. There was no way I would

:25:01.:25:06.

give up. , wherever I got dropped. It was paying respects to the people

:25:07.:25:11.

standing out there cheering. They are amazing. Earlier Scottish crowd

:25:12.:25:15.

would do that. It was like a monsoon, it was five deep. -- only a

:25:16.:25:24.

Scottish crowd. Incredible to think of the 140

:25:25.:25:29.

riders, only 12 finished. Well done to Geraint Thomas. This is the final

:25:30.:25:36.

medals table. England finishing top for the first time in 28 years. Just

:25:37.:25:45.

ahead of Australia. Scotland comprehensively beating their

:25:46.:25:50.

previous best return of 33 medals. Well done to them. That is not quite

:25:51.:25:56.

it. The rehearsals are under way for the closing ceremony. Kylie has been
