Good morning and welcome to BBC Three's coverage of the Commonwealth

:00:43.:00:47.

Games. As you can probably tell, it is a bit of a grey and damp day here

:00:48.:00:53.

at Pacific tea, but it is certainly not dampening the spirits of the

:00:54.:00:57.

people coming in at the moment. We are past the halfway stage at the

:00:58.:01:00.

Commonwealth Games and yesterday 31 people became gold medallists.

:01:01.:01:10.

Has he got him greater mark I think he has!

:01:11.:01:24.

Davis gets the gold! The gold medal in the team final.

:01:25.:01:31.

The final race of the Commonwealth Games is taken by England!

:01:32.:01:44.

They have the silver medal! Delight for the Englishwoman. Let's

:01:45.:01:47.

take a look at the medal table, Australia still in the lead with 101

:01:48.:01:51.

medals including 34 gold medals. England have a very respectable 93

:01:52.:01:59.

medals. Scotland took silver for the first

:02:00.:02:03.

time ever in the team gymnastics. Canada moved ahead of Scotland due

:02:04.:02:09.

to the memorable gold and silver of Catharine Pendrel and Emily Batty on

:02:10.:02:11.

the gruelling mountain bike race on Cathkin Braes. Jen Mcintosh claimed

:02:12.:02:21.

shooting silver at Barry Buddon. We have plenty of sport for you

:02:22.:02:25.

today, first up we will be at Kelvingrove as England's player

:02:26.:02:31.

takes on Aron Sherriff in the men's singles competition.

:02:32.:02:40.

It is day one of the diving, and Tonia Couch will be hoping to add

:02:41.:02:47.

gold to the European total of 2012. And in boxing, Michael Conlon, Joe

:02:48.:02:51.

Ham and Sean McGoldrick are all just one step away from medals in the

:02:52.:02:57.

bantamweight division. And if that is not enough for you,

:02:58.:03:01.

on BBC One they are showing the clash of England and Scotland in the

:03:02.:03:05.

women's hockey. These may be the friendly Games but the old enemies

:03:06.:03:10.

never hold anything back. And as ever, our website,

:03:11.:03:15.

bbc.co.uk/glasgow2014, is your source of anything Commonwealth

:03:16.:03:20.

Games. Click on there for news, updates and live streams so you

:03:21.:03:24.

never miss a thing. I am delighted to see that Craig

:03:25.:03:28.

Heap joined us now, Commonwealth Games gold medallist, he competed at

:03:29.:03:31.

the Olympics and now has the more difficult task of explaining

:03:32.:03:35.

everything to people like me. What a fabulous day yesterday for men and

:03:36.:03:38.

women for England. It was an absolutely amazing day,

:03:39.:03:42.

just to see the English men lift the title again. It has been 12 year for

:03:43.:03:47.

the men, 20 years for the women, and what a great day for the home

:03:48.:03:51.

nations. Scotland got their first ever team medal, silver, and the

:03:52.:03:56.

Welsh ladies picked up the bronze, which was fantastic to see the

:03:57.:04:00.

gymnast stood in the arena thinking, have we won a medal? That

:04:01.:04:05.

is what is really great about sport, being able to see that was

:04:06.:04:09.

fantastic. It is not a sport we see a lot of in Glasgow, but the

:04:10.:04:14.

atmosphere inside the halls from the artistic to the women's and it

:04:15.:04:19.

seemed to be fantastic, and it seemed to be a knowledgeable and

:04:20.:04:21.

appreciative crowd. Yes, you find that the fans really

:04:22.:04:26.

do follow gymnastics. I reckon 90% of the audience will be

:04:27.:04:30.

involved in gymnastics and the other 10% are fans of watching it, they go

:04:31.:04:35.

to the Commonwealth Games come Olympics. Any chance for live sport

:04:36.:04:38.

in this country and I think we are really up for it.

:04:39.:04:40.

What was your highlight from yesterday?

:04:41.:04:47.

I think the young English Claudia Fragapane eight, she was absolutely

:04:48.:04:52.

amazing to watch. She is leading the all-rounder and

:04:53.:04:56.

she is leading qualification through the practice. I am really excited,

:04:57.:05:01.

not just for the Games for her, but I am looking forward to Rio 2016.

:05:02.:05:06.

And for the men, a great day for Louis Smith but an injury for Sam

:05:07.:05:12.

Oldham. Ultimately what you remember is that fabulous gold.

:05:13.:05:17.

Yes, and it was really nice to see Louis Smith come back to form as

:05:18.:05:22.

part of the team, not just on the polls but on the parallel bars. He

:05:23.:05:27.

was needed, after some's injury, you start to think, we only have three

:05:28.:05:32.

guys in the team. All of the scores have two count. Fortunately for team

:05:33.:05:35.

England, they were so far in front it was not an issue. As you can

:05:36.:05:40.

see, this normal routine, I would say technically this is one of the

:05:41.:05:47.

best routines I have seen him doing. -- pommel routine. He will have to

:05:48.:05:53.

up the difficulty if he wants to become the pommel horse champion

:05:54.:05:57.

tomorrow. This was a sad and difficult

:05:58.:06:03.

moment, so much training goes into any tournament but you don't want to

:06:04.:06:07.

have an injury here, do you? That is the difficulty you have,

:06:08.:06:10.

when you are performing on a piece of apparatus like the fault, he is

:06:11.:06:15.

so powerful and dynamic, that is a handspring double front have to

:06:16.:06:19.

turn. As he landed he said something felt as though it popped back out

:06:20.:06:26.

and then back in. Two and a half somersaults, the half term, landed

:06:27.:06:31.

slightly to one side and snapped back in. You can see his coach at

:06:32.:06:35.

the side cheering because it was such an amazing fault. Then Scott

:06:36.:06:38.

Hanson said, hang on committee is injured. Credit to him committee did

:06:39.:06:42.

not just fall on the floor, he grabbed his ankle, presented to the

:06:43.:06:49.

judge and then collapsed on the floor. Fair credit to sample it was

:06:50.:06:53.

nice that he had gone away, come back and was of the medal ceremony,

:06:54.:06:58.

not stuck in the hospital. A really great moment. Christian and Louis

:06:59.:07:04.

Smith really doing their bit so he could be part of that ceremony. How

:07:05.:07:07.

nice. When you see the medal ceremony here

:07:08.:07:11.

at the Commonwealth Games does it bring back the emotions for

:07:12.:07:14.

nutrition might yes, I had a few messages from people saying it is

:07:15.:07:18.

bringing back memories from 2002, do you wish you were there?

:07:19.:07:24.

I was talking to Scotland's first-ever gold than those done the

:07:25.:07:27.

rings and he was saying, this is amazing but I am glad I am not spend

:07:28.:07:38.

there! -- down their Lexmark break! This is a great moment for those

:07:39.:07:42.

guys to be bigger and better things, as they are doing.

:07:43.:07:44.

I popped down to the athletes village last week when the teams

:07:45.:07:47.

were being welcomed and I saw Steve on the microphone selling raffle

:07:48.:07:53.

tickets and doing the whole thing, hanging up people's jackets.

:07:54.:07:58.

That is the great thing about these Games committee is fabulous for

:07:59.:08:02.

those who are there, great for the memories for you guys, and Steve

:08:03.:08:07.

must have been so proud of Scotland's efforts yesterday because

:08:08.:08:10.

that was a historic moment. Yes, and Adam Cox, to come back from

:08:11.:08:16.

retirement, he is at teacher, I'd ever cooing with ad for so many

:08:17.:08:19.

years and I don't let you have seen the photograph, he is saying, come

:08:20.:08:25.

on! That must be on the front page of all the newspapers. That is what

:08:26.:08:29.

it meant to him. It has not been an easy couple of years. I think that

:08:30.:08:34.

was really nice. I think with the apparatus finals we have not seen

:08:35.:08:37.

the end of the medals for the Scottish guys and may be Scottish

:08:38.:08:42.

women, as well. It is a really exciting couple of days now we have

:08:43.:08:46.

the all-around final today of both men and women as we can see here.

:08:47.:08:54.

That was Purvis yesterday. -- Dan Purvis. Yes, Dan is a

:08:55.:09:00.

seasoned performer now. He has done so well now the team is settled.

:09:01.:09:04.

The young Frank Baines coming into the team, he is actually top on the

:09:05.:09:09.

parallel bars qualification. I think Steve was maybe a little bit

:09:10.:09:13.

agitated, will he be the only person ever to win a gold medal? I think he

:09:14.:09:17.

would like that title but I said, you better watch out because Frank

:09:18.:09:21.

Baines was superb on the parallel bars and is leading qualification. I

:09:22.:09:25.

would like there to be a real mix in the individual finals, and that this

:09:26.:09:29.

weather likes of Scotland and Wales and England will have a real

:09:30.:09:33.

battle, which will be nice to watch. It will be. Thoughts about Adam Cox?

:09:34.:09:38.

He pulled out just before Delhi but he is back here.

:09:39.:09:41.

Yes, he went back to teaching. he is back here.

:09:42.:09:46.

was fortunate the local council said he could have a couple of months of

:09:47.:09:49.

teaching to get in. It would be nice, his speciality is the Iva Barr

:09:50.:09:53.

but because Scotland are strong in the side bar is not made the final.

:09:54.:09:58.

But he is on the vault final. Anything can happen in

:09:59.:09:59.

But he is on the vault final. your feet, that would be a real

:10:00.:10:06.

fairy tale ending for Adam. He was saying, I am not sure if this is the

:10:07.:10:15.

end, but I think that is the euphoria. Yes, we will fight on! But

:10:16.:10:18.

when you go back to training six hours a day, sometimes he might go,

:10:19.:10:21.

yes, I think I will call it a day now. Whatever he does, I wish him

:10:22.:10:24.

the best of luck, he is a great guy and he is so good for Scottish

:10:25.:10:28.

gymnastics. Do you think the fact that Louis

:10:29.:10:31.

Smith went off and did Strictly Come Dancing and all these other things

:10:32.:10:33.

and became known outside of gymnastics has increased the

:10:34.:10:38.

popularity, maybe just of him, but maybe gymnastics, as well, that he

:10:39.:10:42.

has come back to it. He has not just come back to have a play, he has

:10:43.:10:45.

executed it so well. Yes, Louis Smith has been a bit of a

:10:46.:10:51.

poster boy for gymnastics. I think he would probably be the most famous

:10:52.:10:56.

home nations athlete we have here. Mo Farah pulled out, obviously. He

:10:57.:11:02.

is really, really popular. He has generated interest. It is cool for

:11:03.:11:05.

guys to do gymnastics. I was speaking to someone yesterday within

:11:06.:11:11.

BBC Sport, and I remember when I was in school doing gymnastics I was a

:11:12.:11:15.

bit of an oddball, why would I want to do a girl's sport?

:11:16.:11:21.

but with freestyle dramatics and Louis Smith winning medals, it is

:11:22.:11:25.

pretty cool now. I spend a lot of time going around schools and the

:11:26.:11:29.

first thing they say is, do you known Louis Smith? I say, I taught

:11:30.:11:35.

him all he knows Lexmark... ! Has had a battle to prove to get

:11:36.:11:41.

into the team. We had a battle at the Europeans, he was slightly

:11:42.:11:44.

miffed not to make the team, but that is not because of his talent on

:11:45.:11:49.

the pommel horse. What we saw yesterday was come if what happened

:11:50.:11:54.

was to happen in the World Championships and someone like Sam

:11:55.:11:57.

Oldham or one of the other guys gets injured, you would have to rely on

:11:58.:12:03.

him to step up. However, he did the parallel bars, but he does not do

:12:04.:12:07.

the high bar or the floor or the vault. When you expend people, they

:12:08.:12:13.

go, yes, I understand why he would not be in the team now. He is

:12:14.:12:17.

brilliant on the pommel horse comedy has won a medal, but we'll so have

:12:18.:12:21.

two other guys that are brilliant on it. Max has top qualification and is

:12:22.:12:27.

the current European champions. Daniel Keatings is fantastic on the

:12:28.:12:32.

pommel horse. In the past we were desperate to win a medal and Louis

:12:33.:12:37.

Smith would go regardless. It is his downfall, my year struggling to make

:12:38.:12:41.

the team, because he has inspired all of these kids. In a way, he

:12:42.:12:45.

should be proud of what he has inspired, he has inspired a

:12:46.:12:49.

generation which are unfortunately now better than in Lexmark -- better

:12:50.:12:54.

than him! It has been great to see the

:12:55.:12:58.

dynamics of the Clinton team which has obviously had to split up for

:12:59.:13:01.

these Games and it is a friendly Games but still so competitive. I

:13:02.:13:05.

know you have a lot of gymnastics to talk about a lot of other people,

:13:06.:13:08.

thank you for your time. We will head across to Edinburgh

:13:09.:13:11.

where we're getting different aquatics. The swimming finished

:13:12.:13:14.

yesterday and now we are heading to a different city a different

:13:15.:13:18.

discipline but the same person, Helen Skelton.

:13:19.:13:24.

Yes, that is right, I am all about the water babies this week.

:13:25.:13:27.

We have moved to Edinburgh. The diving had to take place here, Leon

:13:28.:13:33.

Taylor. It had to happen here, this swimming pool was built for the

:13:34.:13:38.

1970s Commonwealth Games. There is a huge history here.

:13:39.:13:40.

Yes, and recently been refurbished, as well. A stunning backdrop, Oliver

:13:41.:13:47.

Browning is in place and all the -- of this swimming pool is world

:13:48.:13:49.

class. We have a world-class field, don't

:13:50.:13:52.

regret you it is about quality rather than quantity.

:13:53.:13:57.

England are the only formation that have put in a team but they are up

:13:58.:14:00.

there, are they not? Yes, the Canadians, Australians and

:14:01.:14:05.

Malaysians all feature in the top in the world here. Later this morning

:14:06.:14:09.

we have the first medal chance 14 England, Tonia Couch and Sarah

:14:10.:14:12.

Barrow, but they are up against the top five in the world. This is going

:14:13.:14:18.

to be the closest run contest in the diving, in my opinion. Without the

:14:19.:14:22.

Chinese year you have the rest of the pairs and the rest of the world.

:14:23.:14:26.

I love Sarah and Tonya, because I feel like they have been there for

:14:27.:14:33.

so long with the best underworld -- in the world. In Delhi they were

:14:34.:14:36.

forth, they just missed out on a medal at the World Cup but it is so

:14:37.:14:39.

close for them. It must be their time, their

:14:40.:14:43.

training has been going well. They will not have an easy ride and it

:14:44.:14:47.

comes down to be inconsistent. The girls all have five dives to do and

:14:48.:14:53.

they have to be super precise. They have been training and warming

:14:54.:14:56.

up behind us this morning and I kind of think, come on, girls!

:14:57.:15:01.

Do you fancy getting in? You have seen my diving efforts!

:15:02.:15:09.

I only dive with Brendan Cole, that is another story.

:15:10.:15:11.

Everyone will be wondering where Tom Daley is, he is not diving today but

:15:12.:15:15.

he is here. Yes, his preparations have been

:15:16.:15:18.

going well, he entered his farm in Shanghai recently. We have been

:15:19.:15:23.

watching him in training recently, he is going well. He will be doing

:15:24.:15:27.

the synchronised diving event as well as the individual, which is a

:15:28.:15:30.

surprise. A last-minute entry, we will talk more about that nearer the

:15:31.:15:34.

time but you heard it here first. The man on the inside!

:15:35.:15:39.

The individual is on the Saturday. Yes, and then the ten metres

:15:40.:15:42.

individual is on the Friday. This morning is all about a young

:15:43.:15:46.

man called James Heatley diving for Scotland.

:15:47.:15:49.

This is his home swimming pool. What a fantastic day for his family.

:15:50.:15:54.

He is the first diver, as well. His grandfather competed and won medals

:15:55.:15:56.

in the Commonwealth Games before him. He is here, recently turned 90.

:15:57.:16:02.

I am sure he is a very proud grandfather.

:16:03.:16:04.

Is grandson kicks things off today, what a perfect start to this four

:16:05.:16:08.

days of diving. Also Alicia Blagg and Rebecca

:16:09.:16:13.

Gallantree, they should go well? Yes, that is the women's three

:16:14.:16:18.

metres seniors. We have the men's one metres preliminaries this

:16:19.:16:21.

morning, then we have team England action in the women's ten metres

:16:22.:16:24.

platform and finishing off today will be the final of the men's one

:16:25.:16:29.

metres. All strong chanters 14 England,

:16:30.:16:32.

James Heatley we have already mentioned and the girls finishing

:16:33.:16:35.

off the three metres springboard at the end of the day.

:16:36.:16:40.

And I am diver from Leeds, we will claim he is not going for England or

:16:41.:16:45.

Scotland, representing Jamaica, absolutely brilliant, brilliant

:16:46.:16:50.

character. We will be talking to him hopefully. But if you want to more

:16:51.:16:54.

about diving, he was a little guide to all you need to know. -- here is

:16:55.:17:08.

a little guide. Platform. They also contest the one

:17:09.:17:15.

metre springboard. For synchronised, adjacent boards are

:17:16.:17:25.

used. The measure 4.8 metres long and 50 centimetres wide. From the

:17:26.:17:30.

diving to our competitors will dive side-by-side from the same ten metre

:17:31.:17:39.

platform. Six metres by five metres. Divers can dive for Lord, backwater,

:17:40.:17:52.

reverse, inboard, twisting and armour stand. He died last for only

:17:53.:18:01.

a few seconds but takes a lot of skill and nerve. -- a dive.

:18:02.:18:10.

I might be biased because we are here but I feel this is one of those

:18:11.:18:15.

sports that really keeps you on the edge of your seat. You can get

:18:16.:18:21.

really hot, can she? Yes, you can. The clap was the end that the pool

:18:22.:18:29.

even when in training, when a diver is performing, they'll is rapturous

:18:30.:18:34.

applause. It is incredibly dangerous and difficult. It you smack the

:18:35.:18:41.

water you are going to get bruised. Hopefully it will not go wrong

:18:42.:18:49.

today. Chris Mears, he had a serious injury. His heart stopped for times.

:18:50.:18:56.

At the youth Olympic Games in Australia, he had meningitis. It was

:18:57.:19:04.

really drastic. Lots of divers have got little injuries that they are

:19:05.:19:09.

nursing. Team England do not have a lot of injuries. With diving you can

:19:10.:19:11.

get whiplash or aches and streams from hitting the water correctly. It

:19:12.:19:25.

is in the back that the divers will be doing a lot of warming up. He

:19:26.:19:29.

will bounce up and down on a trampoline. The only reason that I

:19:30.:19:36.

mention him, not to make anyone nervous, if you are going to applaud

:19:37.:19:41.

give them extra applause because it is incredible what they are doing.

:19:42.:19:45.

How much time do you spend learning on dry land? If you are training

:19:46.:19:51.

full-time as a diver, six hours of your day will be training. Roughly

:19:52.:20:00.

three hours will be for using matched training. Trampolines for

:20:01.:20:11.

somersaults. Am I right in thinking that a perfect body for diving is

:20:12.:20:16.

big hands, big beat but being quite short. I do not know if big feet add

:20:17.:20:22.

essential but big hands are. You need to get into the water without

:20:23.:20:28.

any splash. When you have got a big surface area then you do not want

:20:29.:20:31.

any splash which is a massive part of what the judges are looking for.

:20:32.:20:37.

A splash on this entry is what I will be commentating on later. -- an

:20:38.:20:46.

entry without splashes. Watch this space for the big name in diving,

:20:47.:20:51.

Tom Daley. Lots of Scottish and English hopefuls going this morning

:20:52.:20:57.

and this evening. He is more about him. That here is more about him.

:20:58.:21:09.

That was good, he cannot do any more than that. The crowd are on their

:21:10.:21:13.

feet. Tom Daley has done everything he can. Tom Daley could not have

:21:14.:21:18.

done any more. It is out of your hands now. 2013 was a very tough

:21:19.:21:32.

year for me. I had injury. 2014 comes with a lot of changes. I have

:21:33.:21:37.

moved to London with a new court. Lots of exercises in the gym -- in

:21:38.:21:41.

the gym and I have changed my exercises. I have just got a

:21:42.:21:48.

personal best in Mexico and got a silver medal. I am gradually take

:21:49.:21:53.

the step to being good, to get into that excellence category.

:21:54.:22:00.

You mentioned that personal best, what has been the difference? To

:22:01.:22:07.

break a personal best is something you always strive for. If I do not

:22:08.:22:15.

.1 of my toes, if I go slightly over from vertical, the smallest mistake

:22:16.:22:26.

can cost you a personal best. -- if I do not line up my toes.

:22:27.:22:33.

What was special about the Commonwealth Games gold medal? The

:22:34.:22:40.

Commonwealth Games has always been massive on the diving candour --

:22:41.:22:45.

calendar. In India, I came away with two gold medals and I was over the

:22:46.:22:47.

moon. That is not so good. He lost it all

:22:48.:23:04.

on the take-off. Running out of room. Maybe the flashes put him off.

:23:05.:23:12.

Tell us about the Demon died, the twister. Everybody has got a dive

:23:13.:23:16.

that they are skilled and for me it is the back twister. I am quite

:23:17.:23:25.

optimistic at the Commonwealth Games that I will be able to nail that. Am

:23:26.:23:29.

I right in saying that you have seen a therapist or psychologist? There

:23:30.:23:34.

are so many things to talk about whether it is in diving or outside.

:23:35.:23:38.

It is crucial to be at the top of your game and you have to be

:23:39.:23:43.

mentally any possession to think that you can win and also be in a

:23:44.:23:47.

position where you do not have any worries about the sport.

:23:48.:23:56.

To get another Commonwealth gold medal would mean so much. It only

:23:57.:24:02.

happens once every four years. It is not an adventure do one year and you

:24:03.:24:08.

say you can do it again another year to try to win. You do all that

:24:09.:24:11.

training for four years and you get six dives. If you mess up, you are

:24:12.:24:20.

out. By the time that the Commonwealth Games happens and I am

:24:21.:24:24.

on the board, hopefully I will be in shape.

:24:25.:24:30.

Worth saying that if you have the rewind button on your TV. The man

:24:31.:24:41.

who gave Tom Daley de medal in India, his grandson will be the

:24:42.:24:44.

first man going for Scotland in the pool this morning. He is a global

:24:45.:24:51.

star, Tom Daley, but diving is his day job. What is the dynamic in the

:24:52.:24:59.

team? He is just part of the team. The team dynamic here is fantastic.

:25:00.:25:03.

Both England and Scotland are sharing the training pool and

:25:04.:25:08.

staying in the same hotel. They are very supportive. It is not just the

:25:09.:25:12.

Tom Daley show and he will be pleased to see that. I have had the

:25:13.:25:22.

pleasure of meeting him and he does seem very gracious. As you say, this

:25:23.:25:29.

morning, our first medal chance is with Tonia Couch and Sarah Barrow

:25:30.:25:33.

who are behind us, practising. Fingers crossed for them. Here is

:25:34.:25:37.

more about those two. We have been partners since 2010

:25:38.:25:49.

together. We know each other pretty well. I have known the serious and

:25:50.:25:55.

she was seven. If we do not get on then it would not work as well. She

:25:56.:25:59.

brought me into the sport when she broke her arm in gymnastics. It is

:26:00.:26:08.

really exciting. British diving. Exciting to be competing for

:26:09.:26:13.

England. She is fun to be rough. Always laughing and joking. We got

:26:14.:26:19.

two silvers in the world event for synchronise. We both came fifth in

:26:20.:26:26.

the World Cup last week. We have been competing with some of the best

:26:27.:26:30.

in the world saw experience means a lot here. We have been busy so we

:26:31.:26:35.

are looking forward to competing. We both know when we are ready to

:26:36.:26:39.

compete well. We are ready to compete well. A different way. I

:26:40.:26:46.

like to be in my own little bubble. If we talk before the competition we

:26:47.:26:50.

normally see it as a good sign. We turn it into a good thing. When I

:26:51.:26:55.

enjoy a competition then I tend to dive better. It is a tough

:26:56.:27:02.

competition for the women in the ten metres. Every team that beat us in

:27:03.:27:08.

the World Cup are competing here. It is not like we cannot do it. If I am

:27:09.:27:16.

smiling then I can dive well. Let us hope we can beat them this time.

:27:17.:27:24.

Tonia Couch and Sarah Barrow go first this morning. Ten metres women

:27:25.:27:31.

synchronise. Can they do it? They have been very positive and it will

:27:32.:27:36.

be tight. It is all about consistency. They have to put the

:27:37.:27:43.

pressure on the other purpose. England and Scotland are the only

:27:44.:27:46.

home Nations team to have sent a team. Wales, Northern Ireland, the

:27:47.:27:55.

Isle of Man, join us. We will send you off to commentary and we will

:27:56.:28:03.

see you at 11:50 a.m.. Thank you very much. I actually

:28:04.:28:12.

trained to be a lifeguard at the Commonwealth pool in Edinburgh. That

:28:13.:28:17.

was the end of my career. Dan Wallace and Ross Murdoch, thank you

:28:18.:28:22.

for joining us. Do you have any voice left? You have done more

:28:23.:28:27.

interviews than swimming. My voice is struggling. It was struggling on

:28:28.:28:33.

the first stage. I have been struggling since then. It has been a

:28:34.:28:39.

really good couple of days. We have had a busy morning but I am really

:28:40.:28:44.

enjoying it. How has your few days change. You were in action last

:28:45.:28:48.

nights are you not have had time to get out into the real world? It is

:28:49.:28:55.

only been about 12 hours since I was racing and the swimming pool. I am

:28:56.:28:59.

looking forward to relaxing. Hopefully see some of sports and get

:29:00.:29:03.

back in Scotland for the last few days. If somebody had told you one

:29:04.:29:08.

week ago that you would be sitting here leaving the Commonwealth Games

:29:09.:29:12.

with three medals, would you believe it? Not for a single second. I knew

:29:13.:29:19.

I was capable of getting a medal. To get three, one gold, two M. Team

:29:20.:29:27.

Scotland have done great in the swimming pool and in other sports.

:29:28.:29:35.

-- totally amazing. You are not wearing your models, Ross, you are.

:29:36.:29:42.

Have you got a very sore neck? -- reading your medals. I have had a

:29:43.:29:47.

busy schedule so I have not had a lot of chance to wield. I met some

:29:48.:29:54.

royals yesterday. Apart from that, I have not had the chance to wield

:29:55.:29:58.

them look at them. I have had to stay grounded. I will enjoy it over

:29:59.:30:05.

the next week. Have you had time to speak to family and friends, or have

:30:06.:30:08.

you been going to TV studio to meet royals and things like that?

:30:09.:30:13.

you been going to TV studio to meet to sit down and see my parents a

:30:14.:30:15.

little bit after one of the to sit down and see my parents a

:30:16.:30:23.

got to see them last night. Not had much time to relax and enjoy my

:30:24.:30:28.

success over the past week. I definitely will do that this week.

:30:29.:30:32.

We can take a look at some of your work in the swimming pool. We will

:30:33.:30:39.

start off with Ross. Have you watched this back? I got a chance to

:30:40.:30:43.

watch a little bit of it back. Not from this angle. We had some race

:30:44.:30:51.

analysis and I got to watch it from that perspective. I had not seen

:30:52.:30:55.

many images like this. At which point do you realise that you have

:30:56.:30:59.

one? You can see the shock on your face. I was totally unaware that I

:31:00.:31:10.

had done what I had done. I still cannot believe it just now, the time

:31:11.:31:19.

that came up on the board was mine. Dang, I saw that when you wrote on

:31:20.:31:25.

Twitter, you said, I left it late. Does that register at all? Is it

:31:26.:31:30.

like watching somebody different? I watched my race back the next day.

:31:31.:31:36.

It was quite strange to me touch is -- to seemed touched the wall first.

:31:37.:31:41.

At the halfway point, I was so far down. It was pure relief. I was so

:31:42.:31:48.

happy for myself and my team-mates, and my family. It was a great

:31:49.:31:50.

moment. I enjoyed the entire week. You mentioned your family, they have

:31:51.:31:58.

sacrificed a lot for you to encourage you to keep swimming. We

:31:59.:32:02.

sacrificed a lot for you to must mention killed. At which point

:32:03.:32:04.

did you decide that would be a great idea? It was a team decision that we

:32:05.:32:11.

were going to step our game up for the last night as a whole nation.

:32:12.:32:16.

The kilt was definitely a great idea. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The

:32:17.:32:21.

code thoroughly enjoyed it. That was definitely a moment that I will

:32:22.:32:30.

never forget. Your family have sacrificed a lot for you, have they

:32:31.:32:32.

not? Yes, it is starting to pay off, they

:32:33.:32:39.

are as happy as I am with the result. Everything I do in the

:32:40.:32:42.

swimming pool is for them. It gives me such joy to see them so happy

:32:43.:32:49.

watching me swimming my brothers and sisters, I don't know how they sit

:32:50.:32:53.

in the stands and watch for hours and hours. But it really is special

:32:54.:32:58.

and makes it all worth it in the end.

:32:59.:32:59.

and makes it all Well, social media gives the world a

:33:00.:33:04.

great insight into people's lives, we can spy on each other now. Ross,

:33:05.:33:09.

I particularly like yours, there have been some great socks, there

:33:10.:33:13.

was the time you crack three eggs and got six yolks. There is this,

:33:14.:33:20.

how high can you jump? It is like URL grasshopper!

:33:21.:33:24.

There is actually someone sitting behind you. How does that work? How

:33:25.:33:29.

do you do that? It is just one of those things, I

:33:30.:33:31.

do you do that? It is just one of those things, have

:33:32.:33:34.

trained to become an athlete, strong in the legs, you have to be for

:33:35.:33:38.

breaststroke. It is just total part of my prerace routine I like to do.

:33:39.:33:43.

-- a little part. You are not jumping up and down on

:33:44.:33:46.

the sofa when you were little, where you?

:33:47.:33:49.

I think I definitely was one of those kids!

:33:50.:33:55.

What happens to you guys next? You still have competitions coming up,

:33:56.:33:59.

do you get any time off? I will get a little time off, I will

:34:00.:34:03.

try and see some other sports, I would love to see the

:34:04.:34:06.

weightlifting, that is amazing to watch and the crowd are getting

:34:07.:34:09.

really involved in that. That is something I would like to see, but

:34:10.:34:13.

just to get to watch the atmosphere in the village. The first few days

:34:14.:34:18.

before the competition and got to chill in the village and I really

:34:19.:34:22.

enjoyed it, playing pool and at different Games consoles with people

:34:23.:34:28.

from other nations. Daniel, what about you?

:34:29.:34:35.

I am looking forwards to just chilling out, I'm not going to think

:34:36.:34:39.

about swimming at all and hopefully get to see some of the events here

:34:40.:34:44.

and get behind Scotland to finish the game is strong.

:34:45.:34:47.

Is there anything you would like to see come any athletes you would like

:34:48.:34:50.

to watch? There is nothing in particular, the

:34:51.:34:54.

whole Games experience has been great and I hope I can continue to

:34:55.:35:00.

kind of get involved with that and just really appreciate the

:35:01.:35:02.

opportunities we have. OK, thank you so much for your time,

:35:03.:35:07.

I know UR on the world tour at the moment, the Pacific theatre, it

:35:08.:35:12.

seems to be. Nature you try and enjoy these days because you never

:35:13.:35:17.

know when they are going to come again. -- the Pacific key tour.

:35:18.:35:21.

We're going to head across to the lawn bowls, it is a stunning

:35:22.:35:30.

setting, the dear green place. We have Aron Sherriff in the men's

:35:31.:35:32.

singles. COMMENTATOR: Well, it is 10-8 to

:35:33.:35:50.

Aron Sherriff. Sam Tolchard went for the heavy shot

:35:51.:35:59.

and ruffled at all the way across. -- rattled it.

:36:00.:36:38.

Both players now playing of the same side of the rink.

:36:39.:37:27.

That last bowl is just causing some some problems on the line. He is

:37:28.:37:44.

going to swap sides onto his backhand.

:37:45.:38:11.

That looked better, it just falls touch out of range. Still one to

:38:12.:38:15.

England. Sam Tolchard having a look for

:38:16.:38:57.

himself. He has dropped his final bowl short

:38:58.:39:30.

on two or three occasions. He has to make sure he is there.

:39:31.:39:38.

He just wanted a touch to keep it to his own. It goes through. Certainly

:39:39.:39:47.

one. Yes, single shot.

:39:48.:40:02.

He has won a few ends, but he has more shots. That has been the

:40:03.:40:10.

difference between Sam Tolchard and Aron Sherriff. Open with the two,

:40:11.:40:12.

since then seven singles picked up. Neither side can dominate at the

:40:13.:40:38.

moment. Aron just has the edge, but there is nothing in the game. Very

:40:39.:40:42.

tight. Sam Tolchard's stated ambition ahead

:40:43.:40:48.

of these Games was to win a gold medal or silver. He has had to

:40:49.:40:57.

settle for bronze in pairs. He has a shot in the singles. He has already

:40:58.:41:05.

beaten the reigning champion. Defeat here would not be fatal, but

:41:06.:41:12.

beaten the reigning champion. Defeat you would

:41:13.:41:13.

beaten the reigning champion. Defeat quarterfinals without question.

:41:14.:41:52.

The marker indicates Sam Tolchard is lying one.

:41:53.:42:04.

And he can now indicate that he is lying two.

:42:05.:42:18.

And just did well, takes it with him. We would prefer his own bowl to

:42:19.:42:36.

fall down. The members of the Aussie squad, the Jackaroos, are watching

:42:37.:42:37.

on. That was disappointing, Sam could

:42:38.:42:51.

afford to reach that. Solid on the bowl, taking it away.

:42:52.:42:56.

It will be interesting to charge to both players, John, because several

:42:57.:43:00.

times with the final bowl they delivered - I know that Aron

:43:01.:43:04.

Sherriff has won two gold - either the shot has been against them or

:43:05.:43:07.

they have had a pretty good chance without danger to add, but they have

:43:08.:43:11.

not reached. Especially in this direction. The

:43:12.:43:13.

problem is, with pushing Especially in this direction. The

:43:14.:43:21.

That is a good length bowl. Yes, two shots.

:43:22.:43:27.

There have been a few chances that have gotten away, but not that time

:43:28.:43:38.

from Aron Sherriff. Still very little to choose between these two

:43:39.:43:39.

players. He looks in fine condition, Aron

:43:40.:44:01.

Sherriff. Certainly ahead of the 2012 World Championships Heath shed

:44:02.:44:11.

22 kilos to get himself fitter. That is more and more the story amongst

:44:12.:44:15.

bowlers, who may or not in the past have carried a little excess weight,

:44:16.:44:20.

but they want to carry themselves in peak condition.

:44:21.:44:23.

Yes, they are thinking about prolonging their career. The longer

:44:24.:44:29.

you want to play, with too much weight it affects the knees.

:44:30.:44:38.

They are quite important in bowls, the knees.

:44:39.:44:46.

It is amazing the amount of bending they do. If you were to add up the

:44:47.:44:49.

medal pressure you are putting on those joints, if you are carrying

:44:50.:44:58.

that little bit of extra body weight it tends to just affect the knees.

:44:59.:45:26.

It is going to be an interesting day for Aron Sherriff, here playing

:45:27.:45:34.

England's gold-medal hope, Sam Tolchard.

:45:35.:45:37.

This afternoon he will take on Tolchard.

:45:38.:45:40.

This afternoon he will Robert Weale of Wales.

:45:41.:45:42.

Sam Tolchard will finish up against Kenya.

:45:43.:45:51.

He is trying with this, needs the blue bowl. He is just the wrong side

:45:52.:45:56.

of it, but he has three good seconds. This is important for Sam.

:45:57.:46:05.

He must get another one in. Just checking how far short Aron

:46:06.:46:33.

Sherriff's bowl is. Nine inches. They could be in trouble.

:46:34.:46:43.

He needs a couple of metres more weight on his last line. He could

:46:44.:47:06.

get some bad luck. He is on a line. He is very close.

:47:07.:47:23.

He has got the jack. It is solid. Looked like he was plumb on it. Just

:47:24.:47:32.

wavered slightly. Did not get it quite solid. He got half of it. He

:47:33.:47:37.

got back into the jack. That is what he did not want.

:47:38.:47:49.

He is looking at it. He is close. Lazy Jack. He is unlucky. The touch

:47:50.:48:11.

has went with the jack. Both players playing the shots. The

:48:12.:48:25.

conditions are not easy. Neither getting the result they were looking

:48:26.:48:48.

for. Both of them were good bowls. He gets half on the jack is well.

:48:49.:48:50.

Some mornings you do wonder. Aron Sherriff just speaking ahead.

:48:51.:48:59.

-- just sneaking ahead. The Namibian missed the chance to

:49:00.:49:56.

beat Bobby Donnelly. He had to take a comfort break and he was agitated

:49:57.:50:01.

after missing such a good chance. He closed it out. There was some crazy

:50:02.:50:08.

results in that section. It has to be the strangest story. Darren

:50:09.:50:14.

Burnett beat the Cook Islands. Just one end over the minimum. Bobby

:50:15.:50:19.

Donnelly who is already a silver medallist then lost to the cook

:50:20.:50:28.

islands 21-1. There no logic to that. Is none. It is a logical.

:50:29.:50:49.

Incredible. When you have been beating 21-0, you do not expect to

:50:50.:50:54.

win a Game 21-1. Not against a silver medal winner. That was good

:50:55.:51:00.

again from Aron Sherriff. Congratulations from his coach. Aron

:51:01.:51:09.

Sherriff is starting to play the better bowls. I would agree. He is

:51:10.:51:25.

unlucky they are, Sam Tolchard. -- unlucky there.

:51:26.:51:36.

It is more than just a Scottish breeze that is rippling across these

:51:37.:51:44.

greens. It is boring. I have not seen one of them for a long time,

:51:45.:52:00.

the old green hood. -- rain hood. That needs to bend. He gave that a

:52:01.:52:02.

really good try. For the first few days,

:52:03.:52:21.

like Australian weather. Big gust of wind into the face of

:52:22.:52:48.

Sam Tolchard it as he got that way. I think that is too much.

:52:49.:52:52.

Single-shot. Just starting to get the better of

:52:53.:53:31.

his English opponent, Aron Sherriff. I think at the moment he is playing

:53:32.:53:37.

the better bowls. Sam has to hold on to him. He needs to keep it tight.

:53:38.:53:50.

You are looking at the big three in the group. Aron Sherriff is

:53:51.:54:03.

unbeaten. If Sam Tolchard was to go down then that would be one match

:54:04.:54:11.

against him. Aron Sherriff, performed this match, was plus 19.

:54:12.:54:18.

-- before this match. Good line then, just needs to run.

:54:19.:55:02.

He has played this really well. That is great. Solid determination on the

:55:03.:55:17.

shot, the way it left his hand. The Australian is close as well. Very

:55:18.:55:21.

close. He gets the drop now. Sam asking to come up and have a

:55:22.:55:42.

look, to see whether it is worth playing with the open hand. I am

:55:43.:55:50.

tempted to come with it at the moment. It is difficult to get past

:55:51.:56:04.

the short bowl on the forehand side. As long as he waits it enough he

:56:05.:56:17.

should be fine. -- weights. He is playing safe.

:56:18.:56:28.

He has picked a good line. My worry would be here now is that if Aron

:56:29.:56:39.

Sherriff does play a shot to nothing, couple of yards on that

:56:40.:56:46.

plant, he could get a result. He could hit his own bowl onto the blue

:56:47.:56:55.

bowl to do more of it. -- to remove it. He can afford to drop the one

:56:56.:57:02.

Mac. He could drop the one Mac. He was playing for that. That was

:57:03.:57:21.

the intention. Good shot put -- good shot to play. He will know that.

:57:22.:57:28.

There are two Mac stages to the shot. Will he get it? He did not. He

:57:29.:57:38.

wanted to come in off the blue bowl and come back in. If you have not

:57:39.:57:45.

played a shot, fine. Second, make sure you do not do yourself any

:57:46.:58:13.

damage. He has to wait for the confirmation which he gets. Double

:58:14.:59:17.

figures now for Sam Tolchard. Sam bowl in the background and cheers in

:59:18.:59:23.

the background because Darren Burnett has picked up another round.

:59:24.:59:25.

He has turned that one around. It's insane that bowl. That is good.

:59:26.:00:09.

Sam Tolchard was looking to banish his daily nightmare.

:00:10.:00:18.

-- his Delhi nightmare. Of course, he beat Robert Weale in

:00:19.:00:32.

the group stages in Delhi and then lost to him in the semifinal.

:00:33.:00:41.

Lost a tie-break in the last end for the bronze against Kelly.

:00:42.:00:49.

Two good bowls here. I just wonder whether Aron might

:00:50.:00:53.

attack this. Big drive. The first big drive we

:00:54.:00:57.

have seen. Gets it clean, you will get fat on

:00:58.:01:01.

the re-spot now, I think. Well, that was accurate, it was on

:01:02.:01:07.

all the way. It was laser-like. The jack bike on the re-spot is

:01:08.:01:11.

Asian, two metres, that is one to Australia. -- the re-pot died

:01:12.:01:21.

Michael re-spot position. -- the Jack is back on the re-spot

:01:22.:01:22.

position. Sam Tolchard, just looking to

:01:23.:01:30.

replace this. He has aligned to get the shot.

:01:31.:01:46.

It just looks like he has the wait to get the shot, as well.

:01:47.:01:47.

Yes, just about. On a full length Jack Sam

:01:48.:02:26.

has won that particular contest. A good end of bowls. What we would

:02:27.:02:30.

expect from these players. That was quite funny that Aron

:02:31.:02:34.

Sherriff was waving his arms around at his last bowl.

:02:35.:02:38.

I don't think it too impressed. He was not happy with himself. I think

:02:39.:02:44.

the wind caught it, as well. 14 - 11, Aron Sherriff needs. Still all

:02:45.:02:51.

to play for. It could be very frustrating in

:02:52.:02:55.

windy conditions. It is a bit like golf, I suppose, Paul.

:02:56.:03:00.

That is right, you play the shot to compensate for the wind blowing and

:03:01.:03:04.

it suddenly drops come you think you have just waited to the perfect time

:03:05.:03:06.

when the wind stops blowing. I played a game at my local club at

:03:07.:03:28.

the start of this season. We play near the seafront

:03:29.:03:33.

the start of this season. We play the start of the game! We were

:03:34.:03:38.

taking a run up to try and get the bowl up the green.

:03:39.:03:45.

We have got no cover whatsoever, and when the wind blows it is difficult.

:03:46.:03:53.

But, such is life. That is the beauty of outdoor bowls. You have to

:03:54.:04:01.

retain your sense of humour. Yes, you have no choice.

:04:02.:04:07.

At one of the Scottish football grounds, I think it is at Arbroath,

:04:08.:04:11.

on certain days the water comes up over the terrace and you can get

:04:12.:04:16.

soaked. You are right on the coast. Apocryphal tales of fish arriving

:04:17.:04:23.

over the walls, as well. That is not too bad, go to the

:04:24.:04:25.

football and get a fish supper! Three good length bowls. I can see a

:04:26.:04:39.

difficulty of them getting back to centre.

:04:40.:05:10.

Now, Sam. Get off that line, it is still hanging isn't it? You can see

:05:11.:05:19.

the old just will not get back, Paul. It is so frustrating for these

:05:20.:05:25.

players. -- you can see the bowl will not get back.

:05:26.:05:39.

Three good bowls in terms of weight. That is a similar line from Aron. He

:05:40.:05:43.

has to just get his bowl, I think. That is another one.

:05:44.:05:50.

It looks like two to Australia. This is not an easy save, really, gaps on

:05:51.:05:58.

each side of the Jack. He has to play it with good weight.

:05:59.:06:05.

The weight has just been hanging out.

:06:06.:06:21.

Well, he looks outside the line to me.

:06:22.:06:27.

Well, you could throw a blanket over the four bowls, they are that close

:06:28.:06:34.

together. He is going to be frustrated here

:06:35.:06:38.

because Aron can just drop this in to take the gamble. -- take the

:06:39.:06:42.

treble. This is a good line. This is a very

:06:43.:07:04.

good line. He does not want too much on the Jack.

:07:05.:07:07.

He was overweight. A good thing he did not get a nip on the Jack then.

:07:08.:07:14.

Two shots to Aron Sherriff. It is the biggest gap between the

:07:15.:07:30.

two players in the match so far, Aron Sherriff leading by 16-11.

:07:31.:07:36.

Well, one thing these two players have in common, John come is the

:07:37.:07:42.

fact they both started at a very early age.

:07:43.:07:48.

Even back in, I think it was 2001, one or two of the newspapers were

:07:49.:07:51.

already starting to write about Sam Tolchard. He would have been around

:07:52.:08:01.

12 or 13 at that particular time. He was identified in 2004 again as one

:08:02.:08:05.

of the players for the future. It does not always work out, but he has

:08:06.:08:09.

shown the dedication and simple talent, as well. A little Aussie

:08:10.:08:20.

wave here. Aron Sherriff, as the saying goes, they used to have to

:08:21.:08:24.

drag him off the Bowling Green at night as a kid as the weather came

:08:25.:08:26.

in and darkness fell. Hours of practice and dedication to

:08:27.:08:37.

their sport from these two athletes.

:08:38.:08:42.

Yes, and of course some has a cricketing -- Sam has a cricketing

:08:43.:08:49.

family background, Jeff and Roger. Roger was a well-known player for

:08:50.:08:53.

Leicester, I think. Salmon could have gone in another direction.

:08:54.:09:01.

Yes, his dad was a cricketer, as well, he was the skipper in the main

:09:02.:09:07.

counties Championship. Cricket is in Aron Sherriff's DNA,

:09:08.:09:16.

as well, as it is for most Aussies. Two great bowls from these players.

:09:17.:09:20.

Conditions are not easy now. Swirling winds.

:09:21.:09:28.

If it had gone the other way, you never know, Aron Sherriff could have

:09:29.:09:35.

been running into bowl at Sam in a Test match!

:09:36.:09:49.

Years going to look at that split. He can afford to reach this. Will

:09:50.:09:58.

you hold the line? He has not really played enough at

:09:59.:09:59.

it. Sam might leave this alone and just

:10:00.:10:09.

come round, get somewhere in that triangle of bowls. There is a little

:10:10.:10:16.

shot on just to jam onto the blue bowls and spring the Jack.

:10:17.:10:22.

Robert Weale is still toiling a little bit on the other rink. He has

:10:23.:10:31.

to win by a few shots, he is 17-14 up at the moment. Still life in that

:10:32.:10:33.

game. Sam is on the wide line, that

:10:34.:11:02.

suggests he is going past the Jack here, which is a sensible bowl. Very

:11:03.:11:03.

good. Now, will you risk a little bit more

:11:04.:11:29.

weight on this, I wonder? I think it is worth it. Just to

:11:30.:11:33.

disturb it slightly. His opponent does not last bowl, but shots

:11:34.:11:36.

against. Well, I cannot see Sam getting

:11:37.:12:00.

another bowl in there, to be honest. I cannot see him drawing

:12:01.:12:05.

another shot. He is giving it a lot of thought,

:12:06.:12:11.

weighing up the pros and cons. If he wants to get a cut on his own blue,

:12:12.:12:14.

it would just be a little heavy and spring it out. I think he will try

:12:15.:12:20.

this, but with the canniest of weight.

:12:21.:12:51.

The last ten shots of Sam Tolchard, all singles.

:12:52.:13:16.

Just cannot seem to find a way to get that two or three which would

:13:17.:13:22.

really aid him. Yes, but at least he is scoring the

:13:23.:13:27.

ends. This section can be so tight. Robert Weale has just moved 19-14

:13:28.:13:30.

ahead now. If he did win that 20-14, he would

:13:31.:13:38.

only be a maximum of plus 11. Whoever wins this game, they have to

:13:39.:13:42.

keep it tight. If you lose, don't lose too many shots.

:13:43.:13:50.

It is tight for Darren Burnett in the other section, as well, 17-16

:13:51.:13:54.

now to Darren. This is a good opener for weight.

:13:55.:14:10.

Just cannot get back to centre, Sam.

:14:11.:14:17.

I was actually wondering if he would open up on the other side just to

:14:18.:14:25.

try something a little different. That is another good opener, Aron

:14:26.:14:28.

Sherriff is just beating him to the opening temp want -- the opening

:14:29.:14:35.

bowls at the moment. Just seems to be tracking. It will

:14:36.:14:51.

come in late now, good weight. You're comes Aron Sherriff, he has

:14:52.:15:19.

found that slightly higher line, as well. Sam Tolchard's bowls have been

:15:20.:15:25.

attracted to that. A very fine line between them

:15:26.:15:35.

hanging out and just turning in. The concentration and determination on

:15:36.:15:39.

the face of Sam Tolchard. He has come inside the line this time. Is

:15:40.:15:44.

he going to push the bowl through or not it over? That just makes it

:15:45.:15:47.

harder. It certainly does. Still in a good

:15:48.:15:58.

position. They three bowls are just behind the black.

:15:59.:16:07.

That was a good shot. That is pretty good. That was a good bowl. That was

:16:08.:16:26.

a bonus. You can see the perfect delivery for Sam on this end. If he

:16:27.:16:34.

can get the jack, using 18 inches of weight, very difficult on the side.

:16:35.:16:53.

It is drifting away. That is how difficult it is to get to the centre

:16:54.:17:01.

line to get to the jack. Second shot.

:17:02.:17:29.

You can sense the frustration for Sam Tolchard. He is not out of it.

:17:30.:17:43.

He has not played badly. That was a good length of bowl. That looks like

:17:44.:17:45.

two. I think it is two. APPLAUSE

:17:46.:18:11.

It does seem that Darren 's bowl is standing up better on that side. He

:18:12.:18:17.

does not go across quite as far. He held at 42nd. -- he held it for a

:18:18.:18:30.

second. Good crowd here at Kelvingrove despite the less than

:18:31.:18:31.

tropical weather. It is being a difficult morning all

:18:32.:19:08.

across the greens. The favourites in certain matches appear to be

:19:09.:19:16.

struggling. That was a better opener from Sam Tolchard.

:19:17.:19:46.

He has got to the jack. Where is it going? He looks to the heavens. The

:19:47.:20:05.

clouds that he sees will match mood. -- will match his mood.

:20:06.:20:23.

That was good again. Very good. His manager like that. There we are. It

:20:24.:20:38.

is a koala bear. The Australian mascot. It is very cute. That was a

:20:39.:20:59.

really good bowl. That is the line that Sam would be coming in on. I

:21:00.:21:06.

wonder if some will switch now. Even the koala bear is happy with that.

:21:07.:21:14.

He looks like he is well fed. Eucalyptus trees. We nor our

:21:15.:21:25.

wildlife. I would not push it much farther than that. I once kept a

:21:26.:22:08.

rabbit. I have not seen too many heavy shots. It has not been that

:22:09.:22:14.

kind of game. One good strike does stand out. He is going to play on

:22:15.:22:27.

his own bowl here. He is very close. He got the inside of it. My goodness

:22:28.:22:34.

me. He was close to that. He certainly was. Has he done any

:22:35.:22:39.

damage? It is difficult to see from the angle we are at.

:22:40.:22:58.

They are having a good look at that. He was very unlucky. He could easily

:22:59.:23:13.

had had a good connection. No indication yet who is holding. I

:23:14.:23:20.

think you have to take your pick out of that.

:23:21.:23:48.

I have just spotted over our shoulder the presence of the

:23:49.:23:55.

Australian manager. He is watching from the television position. It is

:23:56.:24:05.

no surprise that the umpire has been called here. It is close. He is

:24:06.:24:12.

getting the calipers out. You need a steady hand for this. You cannot

:24:13.:24:16.

have a heavy Saturday night if you are doing this job. Steady as can

:24:17.:24:23.

be. The wind is blowing so it is not easy for the umpire. The bowl of Sam

:24:24.:24:46.

Tolchard takes the shot. He is a popular Australian. What a player.

:24:47.:24:54.

He is in connection with his mobile phone and the microphone. He is

:24:55.:25:00.

chatting to the coaching staff. I think he is bringing his bookmaker.

:25:01.:25:13.

I am only joking. -- ringing. He is a really nice guy.

:25:14.:25:31.

The game with Wales is now 19-18. He is making hard work of that. He has

:25:32.:25:39.

to get over the line. That is good news for both of the player is

:25:40.:25:44.

playing here. They are both perfect two out of two.

:25:45.:26:01.

We will keep you up-to-date with what is happening on the other

:26:02.:26:27.

rinks. Scotland have just dropped to four. He was 19-16 up. He now trails

:26:28.:26:34.

the Namibian, 20-19. Some will reach this. Anything on

:26:35.:27:06.

the jack is good. -- Sam. You could see he played that extra bit of

:27:07.:27:10.

weight. He executed that perfectly. That was a good bowl. That is the

:27:11.:27:22.

same line. It got a touch back. It is not good enough.

:27:23.:28:05.

He is on the line again. Good weight on it. That had another good role.

:28:06.:28:26.

-- roll. He is lying well but there's a little chance here. He has

:28:27.:28:32.

to play through this. He clears the bowls if he gets the jack

:28:33.:28:44.

breakthrough. He is going for it. Very good result. It will reduce the

:28:45.:28:55.

count to one. He has not played with weight too often but when he has it

:28:56.:28:59.

has been accurate. It was a good strike. Job done.

:29:00.:29:37.

It is a better result for Robert is Sam Tolchard is going to win this

:29:38.:29:44.

match. I do not know who he is playing tonight. Sam Tolchard is --

:29:45.:29:54.

has got the easier task, he is playing the man from Kenya. To be

:29:55.:30:00.

fair to him, he took Aron Sherriff pretty close, 21-17. The Welshman

:30:01.:30:13.

will be supporting Sam Tolchard here out of interest -- self-interest.

:30:14.:30:26.

Darren Burnett of Scotland on the rink next door has won the bowl to

:30:27.:30:36.

play. Another good bowl from Sam Tolchard. He is starting to come on

:30:37.:30:38.

strong, Sam. Good line by Aron, he needs the bowl

:30:39.:30:48.

on the Jack. That is very well played.

:30:49.:30:54.

Well, Darren Burnett has lost, saw another one of the favourites to go

:30:55.:31:04.

far has been pulled down by Will Esterhuizen of the media. --

:31:05.:31:10.

Namibia. You made a good point on the match we were watching, John,

:31:11.:31:15.

that Sam Tolchard is starting to gone on to the game and in that part

:31:16.:31:18.

of the match when he was trying to hold on in there, he was giving

:31:19.:31:21.

himself a chance. Yes, but that third bowl was not

:31:22.:31:29.

good. You will pay the price. He did not want that touch, really. He has

:31:30.:31:34.

got in a good position, but Aron would have preferred to bring that

:31:35.:31:35.

Jack through. Just trying to reach through this.

:31:36.:32:11.

It is just hanging. You can see it just holding away.

:32:12.:32:31.

It is all happening this morning. The referee has just taken a tumble

:32:32.:32:43.

in all the excitement! E has actually hurt himself as well.

:32:44.:32:46.

He stepped back into the ditch and lost footing.

:32:47.:32:49.

There is Aron Sherriff, just too far, I think.

:32:50.:32:53.

He is OK, years on his feet are having a smile.

:32:54.:33:05.

That looks like a single shot. Yes, one shot.

:33:06.:33:24.

Well, he is close to the finish line, Sam Tolchard, he will fight

:33:25.:33:30.

him all the way. In the background you can see the

:33:31.:33:57.

bowls is Robert Weale. Just having a glance over.

:33:58.:34:05.

Yes, if Aron does close this out it could mean that Robert would not

:34:06.:34:09.

only have to win the game against Aron, he would have to win by a few

:34:10.:34:14.

shots. Winning is not a problem, sometimes if you have to go for a

:34:15.:34:18.

game it is not quite as easy to win by ten or 11.

:34:19.:34:22.

If he was to close it out here at this particular end and move on to a

:34:23.:34:30.

shots differential of 28, Robert Weale is currently plus seven. Yes,

:34:31.:34:35.

difference of 21. So you are looking at 21-9.

:34:36.:34:41.

That is a difference to winning a game. Whatever happens on this match

:34:42.:34:45.

here is a vital to Robert Weale, the defending champion's chances.

:34:46.:34:57.

One, if Sam Tolchard is going to go down, he will want to take it all

:34:58.:35:02.

the way to the wire, not as many shots off. That is not something

:35:03.:35:11.

Aron Sherriff will be thinking at the moment, or Sam Tolchard, they

:35:12.:35:15.

are just battling for the wind. Philip -- win.

:35:16.:35:23.

Sam is probably in the better position, not to be disrespectful to

:35:24.:35:26.

the Kenyan, Sam is probably favourite to win it. It is very

:35:27.:35:32.

interesting, this group. That is a good shot. Still a bit

:35:33.:35:35.

unlucky, still one down. He needs to hold with this to count.

:35:36.:35:58.

Still room there. Aron, a decent line. Has he pushed

:35:59.:36:10.

through with this? Will he run? Doubtful.

:36:11.:36:24.

From our own goal, you would still see two England. You can never tell.

:36:25.:36:30.

It looks a bit different on the It looks a bit different on the

:36:31.:36:35.

rings. It does! That is what they are there for.

:36:36.:36:37.

Certainly from our wrangling the commentary position can it looked

:36:38.:36:40.

better for Sam Tolchard. Yes, Aron Sherriff's bowl has just

:36:41.:36:47.

fallen back. That will make a difference.

:36:48.:37:16.

Yes, it looked like three. Welcome it looked like three from here, but

:37:17.:37:34.

the angles are a little different. That calls for the umpire.

:37:35.:37:41.

Yes, I think it was close before the Aaron Sheriff bowl fell back. I

:37:42.:37:46.

think before that he had his chance. I am not quite certain now. He could

:37:47.:37:51.

still be in with a chance but that was definitely the bowl, the shot

:37:52.:37:55.

bowl. Yes, a mistake from the Englishman

:37:56.:37:59.

there, putting that in. Maybe three?

:38:00.:38:05.

It is three. What a difference that little belly flop made.

:38:06.:38:12.

Game on. Yes, 19-17. They are plain 25

:38:13.:38:20.

endless. Well, it is taken to the 25th end

:38:21.:38:27.

for Sam Tolchard to score more than two in an end. -- it has taken.

:38:28.:38:34.

Rating a run of 12 consecutive singles for him, when he has scored.

:38:35.:38:46.

Still some intriguing Games to come here at Kelvingrove later today.

:38:47.:38:52.

Darren Burnett Scotland will go back into action having lost. Aron

:38:53.:39:00.

Sherriff against Robert Weale of Wales will be tasty. Australia and

:39:01.:39:05.

New Zealand go head to head in the fours. That will be a cracker.

:39:06.:39:11.

That will be one to see. And you can see you there. It is one

:39:12.:39:17.

of the television Games from Kelvingrove, looking forward to it,

:39:18.:39:24.

John. Yes. You can make a cup of tea, get your biscuits out, pick

:39:25.:39:25.

your feet up and enjoy the bowls. Really good opening bowl from the

:39:26.:39:41.

Aussie, Sam Tolchard, he has played under the line.

:39:42.:39:46.

Yes, to loose deliveries, he did not want to do that then coming he got

:39:47.:39:50.

back and then you has played two loose bowls.

:39:51.:39:59.

On his own Jack Lang. -- Jack length.

:40:00.:39:59.

That looked PC. -- pacey. Sam needs good weight on this. He is

:40:00.:41:18.

shuffling the bowl, the Jack is good.

:41:19.:41:27.

Certainly playing about inside line, looking to arrive. That is the

:41:28.:41:33.

problem, just overweight and you miss the line. He has just played

:41:34.:41:39.

that too keen. They would have been drawing at that stage, I think.

:41:40.:41:45.

Yes, the draw shot was certainly available, but it has not been

:41:46.:41:47.

overly comfortable. He knew pretty early that that was

:41:48.:42:03.

not getting anywhere with that. He is lying one. Can he move Sam

:42:04.:42:09.

Tolchard's bowl and stay in its place for the game?

:42:10.:42:10.

Will he attempt it? Yes playing off the other side. That

:42:11.:42:21.

looks inside the line. I don't think he was that keen. Probably right in

:42:22.:42:27.

the conditions, not an easy shot. Take the one and run.

:42:28.:42:34.

You cannot blame him for doing so. Well, there was a little chance to

:42:35.:42:42.

close it out. But these really have been tricky, trying, testing

:42:43.:42:51.

conditions for the players. Aron Sherriff has just one shot.

:42:52.:43:13.

If he closes it out there, the short distance is 25 -- shot distance, and

:43:14.:43:26.

Robert Weale is plus seven. Yes, Sam Tolchard would be left with

:43:27.:43:31.

plus 17 but with an easier game to come, so it is all very, very

:43:32.:43:36.

interesting. But every shot that Sam Tolchard

:43:37.:43:40.

takes here makes Robert Weale's life a little bit easier. It is hard

:43:41.:43:43.

enough to try and beat someone like Aron Sherriff, with all his

:43:44.:43:48.

experience and all his titles, let alone having to set yourself up

:43:49.:43:54.

particular target. -- a particular target.

:43:55.:43:56.

It is pretty clear what ever happens, if Sam does lose this he

:43:57.:44:01.

just has to win the game tonight and he is probably

:44:02.:44:03.

just has to win the game tonight and shots difference.

:44:04.:44:09.

That is a good bowl by Aron. That will take some beating.

:44:10.:44:34.

he comes, Sam Tolchard. Round the corner. What a shot! Under great

:44:35.:44:45.

pressure. Some delivery. Carbon copy required. He has got a good line. It

:44:46.:44:57.

will not come back. It looked OK from the commentary position.

:44:58.:45:09.

Be it appears to be a bit of a game happening with New Zealand as well.

:45:10.:45:18.

It seems like it has been won with a three on the last end, 21-20. To be

:45:19.:45:31.

conformed. That was an escape if that was the case. New Zealand have

:45:32.:45:37.

managed to get over the line despite struggling greatly. There is action

:45:38.:45:51.

all across the greens here at Kelvingrove. Fascinating stuff.

:45:52.:46:00.

all across the greens here at is playing the blocker to try to

:46:01.:46:06.

protect the blue bowl. That was a good choice. He could not play to

:46:07.:46:15.

it. Will he play this underneath to try to flick the blue bowl away? It

:46:16.:46:24.

is a harder shot than the one he had that the previous end.

:46:25.:46:25.

is a harder shot than the one he had that If he gets his own front bowl

:46:26.:46:30.

solid, he could get it into the blue and then onto the jack decisions,

:46:31.:46:44.

decisions. He has made his mind up. Controlled weight. Looking for his

:46:45.:46:52.

own bowl. If he is under it he is close. It could not get under that

:46:53.:46:57.

bowl. Half of the bowl line. He does not want to move his own

:46:58.:47:07.

bowl away. It is a safe line. Don't think he was too bothered. He

:47:08.:47:28.

gave it a little try. He kept it safe. This has been a long game. It

:47:29.:47:38.

is about ten minutes to the Horden. They should finish the game. It

:47:39.:47:44.

could be touch and go. Just over 12 minutes to go.

:47:45.:47:58.

You really think about the time limit when it comes to the singles

:47:59.:48:05.

matches. This match is the longest on the green. All of the others have

:48:06.:48:17.

finished within the time limit. If we fail to have a winner on 21, it

:48:18.:48:21.

would be the first of the competition.

:48:22.:48:34.

This is a new tactic in this match. If you play that, you have to get it

:48:35.:48:41.

right. It is solid. That Scottish gentleman just

:48:42.:49:28.

wandered into the shot. Not a bad bowl. It was a back bowl. You would

:49:29.:49:31.

want something right on top. It has a wee chance that it falls

:49:32.:49:52.

backwards. It is not enough. It is still England's shot.

:49:53.:50:10.

Did not quite reach it. He's had a few opportunities to close this out

:50:11.:50:22.

and he needs to take them. He does have the advantage of last bowl. He

:50:23.:50:27.

will have to pop this on the top. The line looks good, it is all about

:50:28.:50:38.

weight now. I think he has just run through again. There's not a lot in

:50:39.:50:49.

that though. You would certainly measure that at this stage of the

:50:50.:50:50.

game. He can see the funny side. You actually had a shot that was not

:50:51.:51:08.

measured yesterday because it was so close. It is not unusual when the

:51:09.:51:21.

caliper is used but it is slightly unusual when you use the box method.

:51:22.:51:38.

Two other games have finished and that is why the Sun has popped its

:51:39.:51:47.

head out. He is playing overweight and he is looking for the bowl. It

:51:48.:51:53.

is close to play that sort of weight. He has played it to the way

:51:54.:51:58.

decided. He did not want to get the jack with his own bowl.

:51:59.:52:09.

Last bowl. I think it is a measure at the moment but he has got room to

:52:10.:52:23.

draw it. I think it was a brave shot by Sam Tolchard. Will a measure be

:52:24.:52:34.

required? It could be rendered academic with this final bowl. It is

:52:35.:52:41.

a last -- it is a nice line. What a line in this is. It has a chance. I

:52:42.:52:48.

think that is the winning shot. The winning shot for Australia. It was

:52:49.:52:54.

some battle between the Australian and the man from England. He has

:52:55.:53:00.

found his way over the line in the end. Both men had chances to close

:53:01.:53:07.

it out. It is Aron Sherriff who finds a way through. Epic game. 28

:53:08.:53:15.

ends between England and Australia. Vic for Aron Sherriff and he will

:53:16.:53:23.

progress to the stages. Vic today for Aron Sherriff.

:53:24.:53:49.

It was a pretty good contest in tricky conditions. Both players

:53:50.:53:58.

struggled early to find the way. In tricky conditions. Both players got

:53:59.:54:02.

good weight. It was hard to nail the line in the middle of the brink.

:54:03.:54:06.

Good early drawing from post players. The conditions worsened and

:54:07.:54:16.

got blustery. Aron Sherriff knew if he could win this one then they

:54:17.:54:21.

would be favoured to go through. It will still be pretty tight between

:54:22.:54:30.

the top three players in the group. Struggled at times, some cultured,

:54:31.:54:37.

but he kept himself in the game with a gritty performance. Sensible play,

:54:38.:54:44.

he kept it very tight. He knew that a close defeat was not fatal. I

:54:45.:54:49.

always felt this would go to the wire. They did not give advantage to

:54:50.:54:56.

either player. That was a good last bowl. It was good enough. That is

:54:57.:55:01.

one that clinched it. Joy for Australian team. Aron Sherriff just

:55:02.:55:13.

over the line at Kelvingrove. It was a tough one against Sam Tolchard. He

:55:14.:55:17.

has got a difficult one this afternoon as well. He wins this by

:55:18.:55:25.

21 - 18. Entertaining match. Australia topping England.

flood back? It was a very special year for me. I became Olympic

:59:13.:59:18.

champion two years before. 1985 was a bad season as I had a back injury

:59:19.:59:23.

and I nearly gave up the sport. What inspired me to get -- to keep going

:59:24.:59:28.

was the title at the Edinburgh games. As it turned out, I did three

:59:29.:59:36.

events and won them all. I won the World Championships two weeks later

:59:37.:59:43.

in Nottingham. You are the reigning champion because it has not been

back. How much would you like to see it back? Good question. It is the

:59:48.:59:52.

only title that I have left out of all of the races that I have had in

:59:53.:59:57.

my career. Part of me says do not bring it back at all. It should be a

:59:58.:00:03.

Commonwealth Games sport. Great Britain is a top rowing nation, New

:00:04.:00:11.

Zealand second, Canada fourth,. Countries like India, Sri Lanka, are

:00:12.:00:18.

up-and-coming countries. It should be a sport that we see not on a

I have watched a lot of sport. I had a business meeting and then I came

:00:55.:01:01.

up on Monday lunch time. I have seen athletics, hockey, squash, wrestling

:01:02.:01:06.

and swimming last night. Getting quite a lot in. I am here right

:01:07.:01:14.

:01:15.:01:20.

been very busy for hours, about everything to do with rowing. It was

:01:21.:01:25.

an incredible reception. The tent was packed. What is the situation

:01:26.:01:32.

with rowing in the UK at the moment? We have had our domestic budget cut

:01:33.:01:37.

slightly because of less people doing the sport, which I find

:01:38.:01:40.

difficult to understand. Every rowing club in the country has a

:01:41.:01:47.

waiting list of people to try the sport. Especially since the success

:05:37.:06:06.

win game for the pair from Wales. wonderful shot from Philips. The

:06:07.:06:50.

Welsh pair are widening their lead. Unlucky in that last point, the

:06:51.:07:00.

Wales team. They lead 7-3. Trinidad narrowing the margin. Again, a very

:07:01.:07:35.

positive attack from Phillips. Ho! Scorching shot from Humphreys.

:07:36.:07:59.

A pressure situation here for the Wales team, fighting to try to stay

:08:00.:08:03.

in the match. Edwards and Phillips now with two

:08:04.:08:27.

game points. A bit unlucky for Phillips and

:08:28.:09:02.

Edwards here. The net intervening. Still game point. And they will take

:09:03.:09:16.

it. They take the third Game 11-9. It is still Humphreys and Quashie

:09:17.:09:18.

leading 2-1. Some lovely depth into the body of

:09:19.:09:58.

Conor Edwards. Maybe a feud to many options. -- a few too many.

:09:59.:10:27.

Great job from the Welsh duo. Keeping their opponents off-balance.

:10:28.:10:32.

Straight into the body of Quashie. The returning of Phillips has really

:10:33.:11:05.

improved throughout this match. Couldn't get quite enough height on

:11:06.:11:16.

the top-spin. Black level. -- back level.

:11:17.:11:37.

Great comeback. From the Welsh partnership. Now leading 7-4. Four

:11:38.:12:01.

consecutive points to Edwards and Phillips. Closing in on this game.

:12:02.:12:33.

Six game points for the Welsh team. They have taken six consecutive

:12:34.:12:47.

points. And they keep up the momentum. Two games all.

:12:48.:13:08.

Tricky shot from Edwards. It is the deciding game.

:13:09.:13:38.

Time out after losing those first three points of the deciding game

:13:39.:13:49.

very quickly. Trinidad and Tobago do not want this to get away from them.

:13:50.:14:03.

Just needed to get back to the corner. To get his head right.

:14:04.:14:15.

Curtis Humphreys. See whether it makes a difference for him and his

:14:16.:14:18.

partner. outmanoeuvring their opponents -

:14:19.:14:56.

keeping them off balance. That is going to make Curtis

:14:57.:15:44.

Humphreys feel a lot better, success for the forehand top spin. The big

:15:45.:15:53.

wind up. They can't string the points together at the moment.

:15:54.:16:21.

A wonderful slice on the serve from Phillips. Just mixed the length of

:16:22.:16:31.

it up very nicely. And always with a lot of work on it.

:16:32.:16:50.

Now things getting very tight out here and they have called a

:16:51.:17:29.

time-out. Three consecutive points going against his players.

:17:30.:18:17.

A massive point that one. The Welsh team two points from victory.

:18:18.:18:33.

Three match points for Edwards and Phillips.

:18:34.:18:48.

And there it is - Edwards and Phillips taking it in five games.

:18:49.:19:09.

They came from 2-0 down. What a come back. All credit to them. Excellent

:19:10.:19:25.

result for the youngsters from Wales. Connor Edward and Angha had

:19:26.:19:38.

Phillips taking it. A very young pairing, 20 and 17 years old. We

:19:39.:19:43.

have stepped out and it is very windy. In terms of Team Scotland,

:19:44.:19:47.

the home crowd have been supporting them all the way in every sport. But

:19:48.:19:55.

today they have had their allegiances divided in the

:19:56.:20:03.

wrestling. They're not guaranteed a medal Scotland. One will progress

:20:04.:20:05.

with the chance. When you train with each other you

:20:06.:20:34.

know the others styles and it makes it difficult to do moves, because

:20:35.:20:39.

they know what your moves are. Hawke is in the blue.

:20:40.:20:59.

A bit of control. Got the two on one. No activity, the referee stops

:21:00.:21:05.

them. It is looking for the ankles, but

:21:06.:21:20.

not quite getting them. The referee's warning them Clason

:21:21.:21:48.

needs to attack. Going for the throw. Going to the edge of the mat

:21:49.:21:55.

as well. And down the way. An attempted draw on the edge of the

:21:56.:22:02.

mat. The first points scored. From the referee. And the first points

:22:03.:22:08.

scored is by Jane Clason. The referee's warning Hawke. She

:22:09.:22:27.

goes for a double drive and driving. A good counter. Almost from Clason.

:22:28.:22:35.

No points scored. Nothing. It is a tough match. There is not much in

:22:36.:22:43.

these two at all. The referees not watching the mat. He has given two

:22:44.:22:49.

and two more. Two for Hawke in the blue. The referee is looking over to

:22:50.:22:53.

the side. The wrestling is going on and he seemed not aware at that

:22:54.:23:07.

point. So it is 4-1. They will take down two for the turn. 30 seconds of

:23:08.:23:12.

this first period to go. Hawke in the blue. Two Scots

:23:13.:23:35.

fighters. You need to... Oh there is a defence. The front head lock

:23:36.:23:42.

position. That will be the end of this first period. You said, John,

:23:43.:23:46.

two fighters who know each other well. They're likely to have a

:23:47.:23:51.

close, gritty contest. That is what we got. That one moment from Hawke

:23:52.:23:56.

where she got the two quick scores. A bit of quality with the double

:23:57.:24:02.

leg. It was an attempted throw and it was stopped. There was there was

:24:03.:24:07.

a gut-wrench to the side and the back is being exposed there as you

:24:08.:24:19.

will see. As they come back again. She goes again. And they're quickly

:24:20.:24:35.

back out. A brief 30 second break. You know you're getting old when

:24:36.:24:40.

people have Tom Daley listed as their hero. They're looking for the

:24:41.:24:54.

leg. The two on one. A good position, Hawke's head is in the

:24:55.:24:57.

side. It is hard to score with somebody in a tight position.

:24:58.:25:15.

She is setting up. Good defence from Hawke. She knows it is coming and is

:25:16.:25:27.

ready for it. The referee has given the take down. Two more. Hawke leads

:25:28.:25:32.

6-1. Just over two minutes to go. I am sure if you're going to lose

:25:33.:25:50.

you would rather lose to a friend and colleague. But it will be a blow

:25:51.:25:58.

to Clason if she loses to the younger fighter. The crowd are very

:25:59.:26:03.

quiet. They don't want to show any bias. There is another take down for

:26:04.:26:08.

another two points. A difficult one for the coaches as well. Clason

:26:09.:26:16.

still has got that throw in her. But at 10-1 it is going to be a long way

:26:17.:26:20.

back. One more score for Hawke now would do it. Back into the middle

:26:21.:26:26.

they go. A minute and a half of the fight scheduled. If we get that far.

:26:27.:26:42.

Clason needs the pin. She needs to go from a throw to a pin. Good

:26:43.:26:51.

counter by Hawke and she is going for the pin herself. She has got it.

:26:52.:26:59.

Victory for Shannon Hawke. It was a convincing victory as well. That was

:27:00.:27:06.

a spectacular end. A great performance by Hawke. That is the

:27:07.:27:11.

first Scottish victory we have seen in this match so far. The home crowd

:27:12.:27:17.

now wave their flags. A very good performance from Shannon Hawke. She

:27:18.:27:22.

has been wrestling for a long time as a junior and a great first match

:27:23.:27:28.

for the seniors. She drives. They were going for the three, but it was

a nice counter and into the pin. Clason being the offensive fighter.

:27:34.:27:38.

Excellent technique though by Shannon Hawke and she is the victor.

come in -- we have come in for shelter and we have been asking you

:27:52.:28:02.

to send in your common Commonwelfies. The first we can show

:28:03.:28:10.

you is Jonathan, who is at the badminton. And next Dame Kelly

:28:57.:29:03.

Scottish - Glasgow people are tremendous. All the time. They're

:29:04.:29:07.

the best people in the world. And we have provided the best sports in the

:29:08.:29:13.

world. Everybody's enjoying themselves. It is wonderful.

:29:14.:29:19.

Absolutely wonderful. It was fantastic when the sun was out b I

:29:20.:29:23.

the atmosphere hasn't changed. Is this your first day here? We were

:29:24.:29:28.

lucky enough to be offered a complimentary ticket for the

:29:29.:29:32.

rehearsal for the opening games on the wet Saturday, which we enjoyed.

:29:33.:29:38.

Very colourful and we are out for another fun day. What are you going

:29:39.:29:43.

to see? The badminton tonight. But we have had fun so far. I have got a

:29:44.:29:52.

recipe for a Commonwealth Games recipe, a Scottish Commonwealth

:29:53.:29:59.

celebration porridge. This sounds great. The crew are getting their

:30:00.:30:03.

pen and paper out. What is in it? We have had a family wedding recently.

:30:04.:30:10.

And when we have celebration I have my normal porridge but you add

:30:11.:30:16.

honey, then you add whisky, then you add double cream and then you top it

:30:17.:30:22.

up with local strawberries. Oh, my goodness. You had that for

:30:23.:30:27.

breakfast? Yes, as a celebration. All of them! I am not sure if that

:30:28.:30:35.

is the food of athletes, heading to the badminton, anything else today?

:30:36.:30:43.

We will go with the flow. I played badminton myself for over 20 years.

:30:44.:30:53.

So I only retired when I was 50. So I'm very keen on badminton. I still

:30:54.:30:58.

play, I beat my son recently. Not very keen about it. He wasn't very

:30:59.:31:04.

happy about it. But I just He beats him at golf. I have always been

:31:05.:31:09.

sporty, keep myself fit. This is a great day for everybody and it is

:31:10.:31:15.

nice to see some smiling faces. It is nice to see and mine I have a

:31:16.:31:23.

smiling face and it is lovely to see painted faces. Thank you for your

:31:24.:31:29.

company. Now, if you come with me, you can see the map, the poetry post

the hockey, we will join it when they were locked together on six

points. England only needed a draw That would mean a place in the next

:32:10.:32:12.

round against 2010 runners-up New Zealand. COMMENTATOR: Scotland in

:32:13.:32:27.

all blue from left to right. England in their white tops, red skirt and

:32:28.:32:38.

read socks. Playing for a place in the semifinals. It sounds like there

:32:39.:32:48.

is a piper in the Glasgow National Hockey Centre. Flower of Scotland is

:32:49.:32:54.

echoing around as the stadium begins to fill. Davies, all the way back

:32:55.:33:31.

for Scotland. A bit of relief for Scotland for Scotland. Danson heads

:33:32.:33:41.

towards goal. What a goal. Alex Danson. Fantastic ball from Nick

:33:42.:33:56.

Wright. A great leave from Laura Unsworth to open up the channel.

:33:57.:34:01.

Danson spins beautifully and gets the ball off the ground with a few

:34:02.:34:07.

3-D skills. It makes it easier for her to get the stick underneath the

:34:08.:34:21.

ball. Great start for England. This is a great scoring opportunity. What

:34:22.:34:28.

a chance to equalise. Unsworth down the centre. England charging forward

:34:29.:34:39.

looking for a penalty corner. That is what they have got. England have

:34:40.:34:49.

got a number of options. Richardson Walsh on the sidelines is not one of

:34:50.:34:58.

them. It is Gilbert to inject. Susie Gilbert will inject. Scotland lose a

:34:59.:35:08.

defender because they were not ready within 40 seconds. One of the

:35:09.:35:14.

defenders has to go behind the halfway line. She got a dream card

:35:15.:35:22.

so she should be sat off. Now she is coming off. Unsworth. Still bouncing

:35:23.:35:30.

around. Dangerous for Scotland. And it is in. England get a second goal.

:35:31.:35:37.

Susanna Townsend scores it. England need 2-0. It is Unsworth off the

:35:38.:35:52.

top. Great running initially. Scotland are going to feel hard done

:35:53.:35:58.

by by the corner and by Ralph getting the Greenham card. --

:35:59.:36:02.

Greenham great running by Emily Waterman.

:36:03.:36:29.

Davies has sprinted on to join the attacking formation. Wiley will

:36:30.:36:34.

inject again. Here is the shot. It is a goal for Scotland. Nikki Kidd

:36:35.:36:43.

scores. Scotland's hopes are alive. A terrific drag back. Maddie Hinch

:36:44.:36:56.

has her weight or wrong in goal. She is falling backwards. Scotland have

:36:57.:37:02.

worked so hard on this set play routine. It is exactly the boost

:37:03.:37:06.

that they need just before half-time. Danson steals it from

:37:07.:37:17.

nearly. When his Davies going to nearly. When his Davies going to

:37:18.:37:28.

realise not to take Alex Danson off one-on-one. It is about the fourth

:37:29.:37:33.

time she has been picked off. It is a cheeky effort from Danson. Another

:37:34.:37:40.

penalty corner for Scotland. They get what they planned but not the

:37:41.:37:50.

goal. It is Wiley on the deflection. She has come in from the inject or

:37:51.:37:56.

post. Just too much of a touch on it. Wiley did well. Scotland

:37:57.:38:08.

menacing the England goal. To the edge of the circle. They get a

:38:09.:38:16.

penalty corner. Now, we have seen a couple of interesting moves from the

:38:17.:38:20.

penalty corner in the second half. Can Scotland make this one account?

:38:21.:38:42.

-- this one account. It falls to Kidd for the flick. Scotland with a

:38:43.:38:48.

free hit, all the way down to the corner. Into the circle. Scotland

:38:49.:38:55.

term, Scotland with a shot. It is saved, it is cleared. They get a

:38:56.:39:02.

penalty corner. Ralph and Kidd poised. Penalty corner, saved.

:39:03.:39:12.

Straight down the middle from Kidd. She is going to be disappointed. The

:39:13.:39:19.

crowd will reluctantly join in the countdown for the final ten seconds.

:39:20.:39:28.

It is all over. England have defeated Scotland by 2-1. They take

:39:29.:39:36.

their place in the Commonwealth Games semifinals. Scotland gave

:39:37.:39:41.

everything. They had a magnificent second-half but were unable to get

:39:42.:39:47.

the two goals required. A fantastic match here. The final result

:39:48.:39:57.

Scotland 1-2 England. A good result for England, commiserations to

:39:58.:40:03.

Scotland. This is the youngest member of team Heatley. Peter

:40:04.:40:06.

Heatley is the only Scottish athlete to have ever one three consecutive

:40:07.:40:16.

gold medals at a Commonwealth Games. This is his great-grandson. His

:40:17.:40:23.

other grandson has been diving this morning. James Heatly is through to

:40:24.:40:28.

the final of the one metre men's springboard. All of England's and

:40:29.:40:33.

Scotland's representatives are through to the final. Jack Law is

:40:34.:40:43.

also through. That is on tonight. Finley, you milk it. Enjoy your

:40:44.:40:48.

moment. Before we get to that, we have Tonia Couch and Sarah Barrow.

:40:49.:40:57.

In the synchronised ten metres this morning. They have a chance of a

:40:58.:41:01.

gold-medal. Let's hope that they can do it. COMMENTATOR: A very strong

:41:02.:41:17.

field. The pairs have done very well in the World Series. Probably the

:41:18.:41:53.

favourites. Meaghan Benfeito And Roseline Filion are probably the

:41:54.:42:11.

favourites. Now the English pairing of Sarah Barrow and Tonia Couch. Two

:42:12.:42:16.

silver medals in the World Series this year. In Canada and in London.

:42:17.:42:32.

Don't discount the Australians who have been competing a lot on the

:42:33.:42:36.

Grand Prix circuit. It is really wide open. Would you agree that the

:42:37.:42:42.

Canadian pair are the favourites? I am not going to go in on this one.

:42:43.:42:47.

In the World Cup in Shanghai a week and a half ago. The Chinese were the

:42:48.:42:56.

clear winners, followed by Malaysian and then Canada and Great Britain.

:42:57.:43:02.

Great Britain now translates to England with Sarah Barrow and Tonia

:43:03.:43:11.

Couch. This is a high-quality field. The medals could go to anyone in any

:43:12.:43:16.

position. I have no idea where it is going to go. It is a straight final,

:43:17.:43:23.

two rounds of required dives with limited degrees of difficulty. And

:43:24.:43:28.

then open rounds. Every single dive counts. If you make a mistake, you

:43:29.:43:35.

are off the podium. The last time that Tonia Couch and Sarah Barrow

:43:36.:43:39.

competed, they got second place in London. They could hopefully go a

:43:40.:43:51.

set better. Equalling what they did. The explanation of how the judging

:43:52.:44:02.

works. You have two sets of judges. The synchronisation judges and the

:44:03.:44:13.

execution judges. The execution judges are specifically marking the

:44:14.:44:18.

execution of the Diver close this to them. The remaining judges are

:44:19.:44:30.

looking specifically at the synchronisation. It is a fine detail

:44:31.:44:45.

how it is calculated. You get execution marks and synchronisation

:44:46.:44:49.

marks. They are lumped together and multiplied by the degree of

:44:50.:44:54.

difficulty to give you the total. It sounds more complicated than it is.

:44:55.:44:58.

It will make more sense as it goes on. The athletes in their area to

:44:59.:45:15.

watch this, which will be an exciting first medal event of the

:45:16.:45:23.

diving. There is Jack Law and Chris Spaers catch -- Spears catching up

:45:24.:45:35.

on social media. This is going to be close. I don't know which way this

:45:36.:45:39.

will go. I would normal put my predictions out there. But I'm going

:45:40.:45:53.

to stay completely I don't know. Paul not going to take one side or

:45:54.:46:02.

another. Benfeito will go first. And then the first of the Malaysian

:46:03.:46:16.

pairs. She has just turned 146789 Sarah Barrow and Tonia Couch will go

:46:17.:46:31.

number 4. -- just turned 14. They have been doing the Grand Prix

:46:32.:46:36.

circuit. They have been trawling around the Grand Prix circuit. This

:46:37.:46:41.

is why this contest will be so exciting, because some of the pairs

:46:42.:46:45.

haven't met each other on the world series. The only thing we have got

:46:46.:46:51.

to go from is the Shanghai World Cup two weeks ago and who topped that

:46:52.:46:57.

apart from the Chinese were the Malaysian pair of Jun and Munn. You

:46:58.:47:08.

have a weather of experience with the Canadian pair. They get to open

:47:09.:47:11.

this competition and put the pressure on the other girls. So

:47:12.:47:27.

let's see how people react. The English team's plane had to abort in

:47:28.:47:32.

Siberia on their way back from Shanghai. They were hoping to be

:47:33.:47:37.

back two or three days earlier and were held over in Siberia. Yes,

:47:38.:47:43.

speaking to the team, I didn't realise how serious it was. I was

:47:44.:47:48.

being flippant chatting to them, they were saying, actually it was

:47:49.:47:54.

pretty scary and the people, the staff on the plane, yeah, were very

:47:55.:47:59.

scared as well. But everyone was safe and sound the airline did a

:48:00.:48:04.

great job of getting them back. So everyone's bedded in now, readjusted

:48:05.:48:09.

to the time zone. There is a few sleepy people, but most of them have

:48:10.:48:13.

been in Shanghai. So everyone's had the same lead in to this. It didn't

:48:14.:48:23.

affect Jack Law. Yes, he was on fire this morning. Let's see how these

:48:24.:48:26.

girls find it. It is a straight final. Unlike the guys this morning

:48:27.:48:32.

where they were in prehim moed, this -- mode, this matters from the get

:48:33.:48:39.

go. So much judges, it takes them a while to get into place. I think I

:48:40.:48:44.

have asked you this before, why is the women's five rounds and the

:48:45.:48:49.

men's six? Yeah, OK, imoo not entirely sure why. But the men do

:48:50.:48:53.

six and the women do five in the individual and they try to keep the

:48:54.:48:58.

same ratio if you like. Is it like tennis where you have three sets for

:48:59.:49:01.

women and five for men? I would say it is like that. We can talk, I am

:49:02.:49:08.

sure the girls would like to do more. You ask them. You steam to

:49:09.:49:11.

think the girls would want to do the same as a men, but at the moment the

:49:12.:49:16.

restrictions are they do five rounds and not six. That's right. When we

:49:17.:49:24.

won our Olympic medal in Athens it was only five rounds in the mens and

:49:25.:49:33.

they decided to up it. The rules and regular Gages have been deemed

:49:34.:49:40.

appropriate for the contest. Just to outline, we seem to have a technical

:49:41.:49:44.

problem, we were supposed to be starting now. But there is a

:49:45.:49:49.

technical complexity they need to overcome. The first two rounds will

:49:50.:49:53.

be the same degree of difficulty. They won't be the same dive. They

:49:54.:49:59.

will change around. Like the Ca Nade yards will start with ininward dive

:50:00.:50:07.

and then we will see reverse dives in the second round the Canadians do

:50:08.:50:10.

their reverse dives and there is a back dive from everyone else. So

:50:11.:50:15.

there is a bit of variety. Whatever you do in the first two rounds has a

:50:16.:50:21.

limited degree of difficulty of 2.0. You could do a dive that is 1.2 or

:50:22.:50:31.

2.4, but you would get 2.0. These are the limited degree of difficulty

:50:32.:50:36.

rounds. What you're doing, you won't see much change in the leader boord,

:50:37.:50:40.

but it is nice to have your nose in front and get into the competition.

:50:41.:50:46.

In my opinion, it is important, because these are the most beautiful

:50:47.:50:51.

dives when you see and the competition starts, they're the

:50:52.:50:54.

elegant dives. It what is diving used to be like, where you're doing

:50:55.:50:59.

simple movements and the final three rounds are the chunky rounds, the

:51:00.:51:09.

big dives come out, the 3.0and the 3.2, these are the hardest wuvens.

:51:10.:51:15.

And sometimes mistakes happen. So it is a nice mix in the competition. To

:51:16.:51:20.

have those required dives in there. They got rid of them from the

:51:21.:51:24.

individual competitions in the Commonwealth Games in Manchester. I

:51:25.:51:28.

remember doing the required dives in the morning and the optional dives

:51:29.:51:34.

in the evening. So I'm pleased they're keeping them in for the

:51:35.:51:39.

contest throughout the world now. Now, not only is this a pressure

:51:40.:51:45.

cooker any way, but yo got delays. This can play with your mind. What

:51:46.:51:53.

doo we do, do we sit down and put our music on. Do we do a practice

:51:54.:52:03.

dive? The pair of are walking down the stairs, because they're not

:52:04.:52:09.

going to be going any time soon. It is a long way up and a long way

:52:10.:52:14.

down. You can't really get their quickly. If the referee says we're

:52:15.:52:19.

on and you're still in the shower getting prepared, you have got to

:52:20.:52:25.

regular it -- leg it up the steps. We will listen to the officials

:52:26.:52:28.

deciding what they're going to do. You can't run a diving competition

:52:29.:52:36.

unless the score board is working. And I believe that is what they're

:52:37.:52:40.

waiting for. We have had one competition with one set of pads for

:52:41.:52:45.

the normal judging. But they need to separate them out here and we have

:52:46.:52:51.

the execution and the synchro judges and they're having a problem sorting

:52:52.:52:56.

out the pads. The pads on one side don't seem to be working. The judges

:52:57.:53:04.

have to wear their outfits, they're boiling, it is very warm here. It is

:53:05.:53:08.

going to be a very good crowd. Certainly for the evening sessions

:53:09.:53:11.

and if you're looking to get tickets, there are still a few for

:53:12.:53:16.

sessions here in Edinburgh. Not many. Go on the Commonwealth Games

:53:17.:53:20.

web-site. There are a few tickets for the sessions. You must have been

:53:21.:53:25.

in this position before, same competition for the men, what do you

:53:26.:53:32.

do in is in situation? That is the challenge. You have had weather

:53:33.:53:37.

interruptions. This is a delay before the competition gets juntd

:53:38.:53:42.

way. -- under way. So you come down from the boards, xeep warm and --

:53:43.:53:48.

keep warm and run through what you need to run through. Make sure your

:53:49.:53:53.

attention is in the right place and not looking at the crowd and if your

:53:54.:53:59.

attention goes to places where you feel the nerves coming on, then

:54:00.:54:06.

shift it to somewhere else. It is mind games. Diving is a massive

:54:07.:54:11.

undertaking fiscally, but mentally is where it is won and lost. The

:54:12.:54:17.

girls will be trying to leap off at the same time, spinning off before

:54:18.:54:22.

crashing into the water at speeds approaching 40mph. It is not for the

:54:23.:54:27.

feint hearted and you have got to get it right. In this competition

:54:28.:54:32.

thif got five Dave -- they have got five dives to do. If either of you

:54:33.:54:38.

make a mess of one, you're out of it. That is mind games. That is

:54:39.:54:47.

mental toughness at its... At its most extreme. The only 3.3 dive you

:54:48.:54:54.

will see comes from the Canadians in Round 4. Even else will get the 2s

:54:55.:55:01.

out of the way. The Canadians have an extra degree of difficulty. Yes,

:55:02.:55:08.

but it is marginal. These pairs, all five, are all world class. All in

:55:09.:55:12.

the top six in the world. You have two teams from Malaysia, which is

:55:13.:55:19.

unusual. Usually it is one pair per nation, apart from the Commonwealth

:55:20.:55:25.

Games. Malaysia has strength in-depth and having seen Pandelela

:55:26.:55:34.

is an Olympic medallist. There they are. It is not the normal pairing.

:55:35.:55:40.

No, the team Malaysia have found themselves in a position where they

:55:41.:55:44.

have got lots of options in this event and strength in-depth. They

:55:45.:55:48.

have elected the pairings the way they are, but who knows where they

:55:49.:55:54.

will go for the next two years. Look at this guy from Malaysia, is that

:55:55.:55:58.

where he is from do you think? Looking at that point, you would say

:55:59.:56:04.

the US, but you can see the stripe. The head band says Malaysia. That

:56:05.:56:10.

may give it away! I'm quick like that! I think, we will wait and see

:56:11.:56:20.

if there is any action. No one is making their way up the stairs. On

:56:21.:56:23.

the red button stick with us. We will be back in a few moments. But

:56:24.:56:29.

we don't have any indication of when things will start. So rather than us

:56:30.:56:35.

talk gibberish, I think... We are going to give it one more look

:56:36.:56:41.

across to see how fared a vapsed -- advanced we are. Technically I think

:56:42.:56:46.

there is still a few tweaks to be made. We will let you watch this for

:56:47.:56:52.

a moment and soon as we get some action we will come back. So don't

:56:53.:56:56.

disappear, because we won't. We will return when we see some action. See

:56:57.:56:58.

you shortly. Sarah Barrow and Tonia Couch getting

:56:59.:57:16.

ready. We have a technical delay. Not our fault. But this is an

:57:17.:57:19.

opportunity to learn more about Sarah and Tonia. Two legends of the

:57:20.:57:24.

sport, they're Britain's longest serving female pairing and they have

:57:25.:57:31.

performed all over the world but they haven't got that major

:57:32.:57:37.

international medal yet? If you're not in Nair fan club, here is what

:57:38.:57:42.

you need to know. -- in their fan club. We have been partner since

:57:43.:57:50.

2010 in diving. So we know each other well. Have I known her since

:57:51.:57:56.

she was seven. If you don't get on, I can't match it working as well.

:57:57.:57:58.

She brought me into the sport when she broke her arm in gymnastics. It

:57:59.:58:12.

is exciting. It is exciting to be competing for England. She is always

:58:13.:58:18.

laughing and joking and we train together and pull each other along.

:58:19.:58:25.

We got two silvers and we came fifth in the wurld cup. We have been

:58:26.:58:30.

competing with the best of the world. We have had a busy year and

:58:31.:58:37.

looking forward to competing. We know when we are ready. We are

:58:38.:58:41.

relaxed, but focussed in a different way. I like to be in my little

:58:42.:58:45.

bubble. If we don't say much, I think we are too nervous. If we

:58:46.:58:53.

talk, we see that as a good sign. We turn adrenaline into a good thing.

:58:54.:58:58.

It helps that we have a home crowd kind of supporting us. It is a tough

:58:59.:59:02.

competition for the women's ten metre, all the girls that competed

:59:03.:59:07.

against us in the World Cup beat us. But we have beaten them before. If

:59:08.:59:13.

I'm smiling, I will dive well. It depends what happens on the day. We

:59:14.:59:18.

are all capable of beating each other. Let's hope we beat them this

:59:19.:59:23.

time. They're waiting in the wings. They have a real chance to medal

:59:24.:59:28.

here this morning. They're two of the names people know and love. But

:59:29.:59:33.

one another name in the diving people who people love is Tom Daley.

:59:34.:59:40.

He dives on Friday and Saturday. If you didn't know that much about him,

:59:41.:59:41.

here is something else you might like to know.

:59:42.:59:53.

Yes it is a good one. Tom Daley has done everything he can. Tom Daley,

:59:54.:00:01.

you could not have done any more. It is out of your hands now. 2013 was a

:00:02.:00:16.

rough year for me, riddled with injury. 2014 has come with a lot of

:00:17.:00:19.

changes. I have moved to London, got a new coach and I'm doing new

:00:20.:00:24.

exercises in the gym and changed a lot of my techniques and the

:00:25.:00:28.

competitions have been going well. I got a personal best in Mexico and

:00:29.:00:34.

came away with a silver. Now, I'm making the step between being good

:00:35.:00:47.

to get into the excellent category. You mentioned it your personal best.

:00:48.:00:52.

What is the difference to get that extra special score? The littlest

:00:53.:01:00.

things make a massive difference. If I don't .1 of my toes, if I just

:01:01.:01:06.

slightly go over the vertical, the smallest thing can make big

:01:07.:01:14.

difference. COMMENTATOR: Tom Daley goes into the water, hardly any

:01:15.:01:24.

splash. Get in! What was special about Commonwealth gold? The

:01:25.:01:29.

Commonwealth Games is a massive thing on the diving calendar. To

:01:30.:01:34.

compete in Delhi and to come away with two medals, it was fantastic. I

:01:35.:01:37.

can't wait to get the chance to do another one. COMMENTATOR: It is not

:01:38.:01:48.

so good. He lost it all on the take-off. Maybe the flashes put him

:01:49.:01:59.

off. What about the Demon dive? The twister Rushton muck everybody has a

:02:00.:02:05.

dive they are a bit scared of. For me it has always been the back

:02:06.:02:10.

twister. I am quite optimistic that in the Commonwealth Games I will be

:02:11.:02:15.

able to nail that dive. Have you been seeing a therapist or a

:02:16.:02:21.

psychologist? There are so many things to talk about with a sports

:02:22.:02:27.

psychologist. It is a crucial part of your game to be mentally in a

:02:28.:02:30.

position where you think that you can win. To get another Commonwealth

:02:31.:02:47.

gold medal would mean so much. It only happens every four years. It is

:02:48.:02:53.

not an event where you can say, it is OK, I can try again next year.

:02:54.:03:00.

You train for four years and you get six dives to try to get a medal and

:03:01.:03:05.

if you mess up once, you are out. There is still a lot of work to be

:03:06.:03:08.

done but by the time the Commonwealth Games happens, I will

:03:09.:03:12.

be on the end of the board and hopefully in good shape. Well, if we

:03:13.:03:25.

were nervous before, we are certainly nervous now. There has

:03:26.:03:30.

been some sort of technical glitch and we have been delayed. I feel for

:03:31.:03:35.

the divers. Sarah Barrow and Tonia Couch have

:03:36.:03:36.

the divers. Sarah Barrow and Tonia Couch been up the stairs, down the

:03:37.:03:42.

stairs, what do you do at this point? Bob Ballard, Leon Taylor? You

:03:43.:03:48.

are psych. But we do not know what is happening. We were ready about 20

:03:49.:04:01.

minutes ago. There seems to be a problem with the input pads for the

:04:02.:04:07.

scores. But we do have some divers on the boards. We have the all clear

:04:08.:04:14.

to go for the final. It is the final of the women's ten metres

:04:15.:04:20.

synchronised platform. There are two from Malaysian, one from England,

:04:21.:04:26.

one from Canada and one from Australia. We will take you through

:04:27.:04:31.

the mine a shy of what you need to know. Five rounds of dives, Leon.

:04:32.:04:41.

The first two rounds are obligatory. The ones that they have to do. Then

:04:42.:04:48.

the optional is, after that. I am finding this a particularly

:04:49.:04:52.

interesting. The crowd are getting restless. What is happening to the

:04:53.:04:58.

divers? They are standing around not sure what is happening. The judges

:04:59.:05:06.

still waiting for the all clear. Off-screen, the Canadian pair have

:05:07.:05:09.

taken the easy way down from the ten meter. They have let off. Instead of

:05:10.:05:16.

coming down by the stairs, they have taken the 1.5 second option and

:05:17.:05:25.

jumped off. This is tough. It is going to be the closest run a

:05:26.:05:29.

competition of this diving programme because of the quality of the field.

:05:30.:05:36.

It is world class. I am not using that word lightly. We have four of

:05:37.:05:41.

the top five from last week at the Shanghai World Cup. The atmosphere

:05:42.:05:48.

is electric. Apart from the Chinese, we have the rest of the best of the

:05:49.:05:54.

world. They are getting hot under the collar poolside because

:05:55.:05:59.

everybody wants to get underway. Here we go, it looks like the

:06:00.:06:04.

Canadian pair are making their way back up the spiral staircase. The

:06:05.:06:08.

coaches are looking nervous, as well. The coach of Tonia Couch and

:06:09.:06:18.

Sarah Barrow in the background. The Canadian coaches in the forefront.

:06:19.:06:25.

They were practising again off the three metre platform. It looks like

:06:26.:06:30.

we are going to have another delay. Some are going off the five metre

:06:31.:06:34.

board, some are going off the three metre board. They were ready for

:06:35.:06:42.

competition 25 minutes ago. What kind of impact will this have on

:06:43.:06:48.

them? When you are ready to go, you are in the starting chorale, that is

:06:49.:06:54.

when you need to be there. It is frustrating and annoying but there

:06:55.:06:58.

is nothing that you can do about it. You have to make the best of the

:06:59.:07:10.

situation. All of the has back in the water with the judge 's

:07:11.:07:16.

permission. They are getting ready mentally. It is about how best to

:07:17.:07:25.

use the time. There we go, technical delay, what does that mean? The

:07:26.:07:34.

difference from earlier on, just straight evaluation from the judges

:07:35.:07:39.

of a dive, here we have the execution judges. It doesn't mean

:07:40.:07:44.

they come out with a guillotine. There are synchronised judges who

:07:45.:07:52.

are just looking at the synchro involved in a dive. The judges have

:07:53.:07:57.

two separate areas where they sit. This seems to be causing the

:07:58.:08:02.

convocation. Maybe they have had to shift things around. There are an

:08:03.:08:08.

additional five judges involved. And a digital for judges in the

:08:09.:08:13.

individual event. They keep increasing the numbers. There is an

:08:14.:08:22.

11. Five for the synchronisation and six for the execution. The highest

:08:23.:08:26.

and lowest on a research of the execution marks are taken away. Then

:08:27.:08:34.

the three middle marks for the synchronisation carried forward and

:08:35.:08:37.

multiplied by the difficulty total. For each of the five dives. Aside

:08:38.:08:45.

from the Chinese, this is a rerun of what happened in Shanghai two weeks

:08:46.:08:52.

ago. China aside, it was essentially a Commonwealth Games final in

:08:53.:08:57.

itself. Two strong pairs from Malaysia who are excellent. Strong

:08:58.:09:03.

showing in the recent World Cup in Shanghai, just behind the formidable

:09:04.:09:10.

Chinese pair. Sarah Barrow and Tonia Couch were second in London and the

:09:11.:09:17.

second in Windsor. Can this delay have an effect on the judges? Yes,

:09:18.:09:28.

the size of the crowd and the location. If the crowd are really

:09:29.:09:34.

loud and standing on their feet it could potentially give the judges a

:09:35.:09:38.

boost. Of course, the judges would never say that they would be

:09:39.:09:43.

affected by the atmosphere but they are only human. More than

:09:44.:09:48.

importantly it can lift the competitors game. They will want to

:09:49.:09:54.

lift the sport and Altima lead to liver. In the swimming, we were

:09:55.:10:09.

saying that we have seen the growth and emergence of the competitors

:10:10.:10:13.

from England. It has been a hotbed for many years. Recently they have

:10:14.:10:20.

had a fantastic facility to boot. They are using that as best they

:10:21.:10:26.

can. Andy Wagstaff in Plymouth is the head coach. Tom Daley was based

:10:27.:10:31.

their full-time but is now in London. There has been a central

:10:32.:10:37.

hub, a high-performance training Centre for British diving. Emerging

:10:38.:10:41.

talent, as well. Matthew Dixon at the age of 14 is based in Plymouth,

:10:42.:10:49.

one of the youngest members of team England. Victoria Vincent, the

:10:50.:10:54.

youngest member at the age of 13 featuring in the women's platform

:10:55.:10:59.

later in the programme. Both based in Plymouth, so there is strength in

:11:00.:11:02.

depth down at that high-performance centre. Sadly, the pair that we were

:11:03.:11:12.

looking forward to seeing in the ten metre men's Singh. They are not

:11:13.:11:17.

going to be here. They are in sync with their injuries. They both have

:11:18.:11:22.

elbow injuries. Very frustrating for them because they had good

:11:23.:11:26.

performances this year. We have another pair in it. A late entry, if

:11:27.:11:34.

you like. Would we have heard of them? The pairing we will be

:11:35.:11:39.

watching all being well is Tom Daley, who you might recognise, and

:11:40.:11:46.

James Denny. A young diver of 22 from Leeds. His potential has been

:11:47.:11:52.

highlighted to be a permanent feature as Tom Daley's partner. He

:11:53.:11:57.

has got the strength and the dives. Has he got the consistency? That

:11:58.:12:04.

event is wide open. If Peter Porter is at home listening, maybe he

:12:05.:12:10.

should get his head up and we could start diving again. I think you

:12:11.:12:17.

could do it. You are in great shape. I would get one diving before my

:12:18.:12:25.

body gave up on me, I think. You could do the six. Possibly. We will

:12:26.:12:31.

see if we can get a late entry. We were going to have two pairs from

:12:32.:12:36.

England so you and Tom and James can get going. I cannot shed any more

:12:37.:12:41.

light on when this is going to start. A technical delay, you can

:12:42.:12:47.

see on your screen. We believe it is to do with the input pads in terms

:12:48.:12:53.

of marking from the judges. There are a lot of frowns and some very

:12:54.:12:57.

anxious looking faces. I think we are still a little way off getting

:12:58.:13:05.

the ten metre synchronised platform underway. There will be five pairs

:13:06.:13:09.

when we do get underway. Canada, two from the Malaysia, then Rachel

:13:10.:13:28.

Barrow and Tonia Couch. No divers are visible on the pool edge. That

:13:29.:13:34.

is it. I thought I saw a thumbs up from one of the technical officials.

:13:35.:13:38.

We are moving in the right direction. It is all about body

:13:39.:13:44.

language. We are not getting any information from downstairs at the

:13:45.:13:49.

moment. The divers are being told what is going on. They are now

:13:50.:13:53.

running about 35 minutes late on this. Time which is rearranged.

:13:54.:14:02.

Also, luckily we don't have to go into another event. We will have the

:14:03.:14:12.

proper turnaround time. The information is being passed to the

:14:13.:14:15.

judges. The coaches are being told that something is happening. Trying

:14:16.:14:25.

to work out from their faces, their expressions and reactions, what they

:14:26.:14:33.

are thinking. Could be bolted onto the programme tonight but that might

:14:34.:14:40.

make it a bit too long. Trying to eavesdrop on what is going on. Any

:14:41.:14:48.

more information that you can see, Leon? It looks as though we are

:14:49.:14:56.

going back to the old school where the judges hold of marks in an old

:14:57.:15:05.

school style. - hold up marks. The judging cards which many diving

:15:06.:15:08.

competitions around the world still use. That is going to make it quite

:15:09.:15:22.

tricky to call. Let's wait and see. If you want to see whether Sarah and

:15:23.:15:29.

Tonia can get that medal, then flip over to BBC1. There is so much sport

:16:05.:16:10.

We will be heading to Kelvingrove shortly as Scotland hope to redress

:16:11.:16:17.

the balance after being beaten by England in the hockey this morning.

:16:18.:16:21.

They're hoping that they can redress the balance in bowls at Kelvingrove.

:16:22.:16:30.

We are down outside the BBC. There is a carnival atmosphere, in case

:16:31.:16:36.

you are wondering what the noise is. Now let's head to Kelvingrove and

:16:37.:16:42.

see how Scotland fair against -- fare against England in this match.

:16:43.:16:55.

Sneaking past it. It is not a bad ball, but it is going to be hard to

:16:56.:17:03.

get to the England shot, that one in front.

:17:04.:17:19.

The wind just gusting. She just stood off the mat for a moment.

:17:20.:17:34.

Just around that front one. It is a good weighted bowl. That will force

:17:35.:17:45.

Margaret into playing into this. A good delivery by Sian. A lovely

:17:46.:17:52.

weight to come around those short bowls. Coming in for another shot. I

:17:53.:17:59.

can't see Margaret mucking around with it.

:18:00.:18:07.

It is on the forehand. That is an interesting choice. Playing good

:18:08.:18:15.

weight there. In the area for something. Ooh, well! She got one

:18:16.:18:19.

out. Made it The England bowls now being brought

:18:20.:18:37.

out into the open. This needs to hurry - not there. That bowl has

:18:38.:18:47.

been pushed out on the wing a little and Margaret will be able to see

:18:48.:18:53.

that quite clearly from the mat. Her own bowl on to jack is also good.

:18:54.:18:58.

They have got a couple of bowls behind. That is what the girls are

:18:59.:19:05.

indicating. Bowl out or bowl on the jack would be excellent. Wasn't too

:19:06.:19:10.

far away with the last one. So something similar.

:19:11.:19:25.

Looks wide to me. Yeah, wanted to be almost the same bowl as the last

:19:26.:19:39.

time. Pushed it out a bit more. The marker indicating one to England.

:19:40.:19:44.

That will do. One of them. Had to score. A third of the way through

:19:45.:19:51.

the game. Pushing on score. A third of the way through

:19:52.:19:54.

here. Just over half an hour gone. Sophie just indicating with her hand

:19:55.:20:21.

to straighten the jack. A lot of viewers will with used to the indoor

:20:22.:20:26.

where they have dots along the rink, or in the southern hemisphere where

:20:27.:20:31.

they have a chalk mark down. That helps with the jack. That doesn't

:20:32.:20:39.

happen with outdoor bowls. The chalk wouldn't last long in the wet

:20:40.:20:43.

conditions. That is true, maybe we do have our share of wet weather.

:20:44.:20:50.

You're from Australia - behave yourself, you don't know what wet

:20:51.:20:55.

weather is. Sadly you do get some floods in the Northern Territories.

:20:56.:21:00.

That was a disaster the last time. But generally speaking we play bowls

:21:01.:21:05.

in the rain far too often up here. Correction, catching a bit too much

:21:06.:21:08.

of an edge of that short bowl. Just a little bit far away for the

:21:09.:21:33.

lead. Looking for the lead to get within that half yard if neck. -- if

:21:34.:21:37.

they can. That is dropping through. There is a little push. I think her

:21:38.:22:01.

track was quite good. Another bowl that just set down as

:22:02.:22:35.

it arrived. That opens it up a bit. Certainly

:22:36.:23:15.

arriving with a bit of weight. A very successful indoor player as

:23:16.:23:52.

well as outdoor. It needs to stop. Run through.

:23:53.:23:59.

She is looking for the same track. It depends on the weight now. Looks

:24:00.:24:10.

good. Certainly good enough. Not sure if she has enough weight on

:24:11.:24:31.

this. Not a time to be short. She had every opportunity to pick up a

:24:32.:24:37.

jack or draw there. But obviously quite difficult for the girls out

:24:38.:24:42.

there with these gusty wind. My goodness me, there was four there.

:24:43.:24:47.

Short bowl, four against. Lots of holes. She was trying to draw it.

:24:48.:25:01.

A nice little run new for England. -- a nice little run now for

:25:02.:25:11.

England. She is on a good line there.

:25:12.:25:58.

Tracking a bit across. More the weight the problem.

:25:59.:26:13.

Quite difficult to call these bowls when they're coming up. We can judge

:26:14.:26:51.

the weight of things, but with the pattern that is on them, it is hard

:26:52.:26:53.

to tell. Trying with this one. Needs to

:26:54.:27:11.

hurry. She's there. Good bowl. There is the Scottish coach, David

:27:12.:27:18.

Gourlay, A good job to put this Scottish team together. Lots of

:27:19.:27:23.

talent of course available. Ellen arriving on the forehand. A very

:27:24.:27:31.

good result for Ellen. Well played. Good bowl. Turneded off the bowl on

:27:32.:27:32.

to the jack. It is heading in the right

:27:33.:27:54.

direction. Just swinging away. It needed a little edge just to

:27:55.:27:56.

straighten her up on to the bowl. Not quite there. It's still

:27:57.:28:42.

reasonably early days, we are on the eighth end. But when you start

:28:43.:28:46.

looking at the table, Scotland, well, pretty well assured, unless

:28:47.:28:52.

something really goes badly wrong in this match, of getting into the

:28:53.:28:58.

quarters. England, well, they need to win. The way things are going,

:28:59.:29:04.

Northern Ireland are beating PNG by a bit of a margin. So it's all

:29:05.:29:08.

getting very interesting. They will not worry about it at this

:29:09.:29:21.

stage. They're getting advice I'm sure from their management when it

:29:22.:29:32.

comes to ends 14 and 15. There is just too many things that can go

:29:33.:29:34.

wrong at the moment. Not there. Goodness me, now they

:29:35.:30:10.

will have to think about this. Tom Armstrong on the left, an England

:30:11.:30:14.

internationalist from some years ago. Part of the management,

:30:15.:30:24.

coaching structure of England. I have say they're still very well

:30:25.:30:29.

funded for their team for bowls. Margaret has a chance. That's gone!

:30:30.:30:35.

Now what's happened to it? I have a feeling her bowl has gone off the

:30:36.:30:39.

rink and if that is the case it is going to be one to England. A good

:30:40.:30:58.

strike all the way. The jack was off the rink. But unfortunately her ball

:30:59.:31:09.

went off. One for England. There was an England bowl lurking at the back.

:31:10.:31:20.

I am surprised she didn't play that with her first, leaving the second

:31:21.:31:26.

potentially to draw. The rain approaching again. Cover up time.

:31:27.:31:50.

It wouldn't be very pleasant for the players out there but they are used

:31:51.:32:13.

to it. It is just a bit of a squall. They just have to make sure that the

:32:14.:32:25.

bowls are dry enough. That was a very good bowl from Clare. Opening

:32:26.:32:44.

that up. Some players find their wet gear very restrictive. Others are

:32:45.:32:54.

very comfortable wearing it. This one will dive back. Here it comes.

:32:55.:33:07.

Two very good bowls from Clare. There are all those great stories

:33:08.:33:10.

about how the bias of a ball was discovered. Now there is so much

:33:11.:33:24.

choice, colours, sizes and weights, grips. Emblems. Everything you can

:33:25.:33:41.

think of. A lot of players have their names inscribed upon the bowls

:33:42.:33:55.

as well. Yvonne with herb bowl there to promote. Falling a little short.

:33:56.:34:10.

-- her bowl. Clare changing to open hand. Probably the safer option. It

:34:11.:34:17.

is but you have to get your shoulder behind it on that side. It is a

:34:18.:34:55.

different weight. Trying to make her way around the front. She has got

:34:56.:35:01.

the blue bowl to aim for. Drop inside that and you are close to

:35:02.:35:11.

shot. Just out of shot. She pushed that up there. There is Margaret

:35:12.:35:36.

following it down. It is not going to reach. A tall girl. Five foot

:35:37.:35:58.

eight. Now we are into a bit of wet weather OK. Looking for the shot

:35:59.:36:23.

bowl. Just missing. Margaret will be looking to take advantage of that.

:36:24.:36:28.

She is inside but she needs a little bit of luck. She didn't get it by

:36:29.:36:40.

hitting that bowl. I can tell you. She pushed that into the head. It

:36:41.:36:45.

looks like it could be a good measure now. It wasn't really a

:36:46.:36:56.

problem before but they are just going to check it. Just going back

:36:57.:37:03.

again. It is confirmed as one to Scotland. Now it is getting very wet

:37:04.:37:16.

out there. We weren't really expecting this.

:37:17.:37:44.

A bit of a heavy shower has arrived. There is a bit of scampering around

:37:45.:37:53.

for wet weather gear. Claire very brave out there in your shorts. I

:37:54.:37:59.

don't think I would like to be out there in shorts. I don't think we

:38:00.:38:05.

were expecting this. We thought there might be a bit of wind but not

:38:06.:38:15.

the heavy rain. This weather was predicted for tomorrow. But not for

:38:16.:38:28.

today. That is a good starter. Just taking refuge under the one

:38:29.:38:33.

umbrella. A bit like ours. The safest way. Keeping the wet weather

:38:34.:38:39.

off all the gear. That is the important bit. A lot of electronics

:38:40.:38:59.

up here. There is a very good line. Two good bowls. We call that a bit

:39:00.:39:05.

of a mud run when we play in wet conditions. You wouldn't know what

:39:06.:39:20.

that is. A mud run, indeed! It is bucketing it down. Well, it is all

:39:21.:39:45.

part of the game, these conditions. Didn't really want the outside edge

:39:46.:40:08.

of that. Standing up a little. It looked like it had a good track. I

:40:09.:40:15.

do not believe it. What is he like hiding out there? What happened to

:40:16.:40:21.

his wet weather gear? I am surprised he can fit in there. He is a wimp!

:40:22.:40:29.

We will give him a hard time afterwards. He has got a hold. He

:40:30.:40:36.

should be embracing the weather. There is David Gurley having a good

:40:37.:40:42.

laugh there. He will have a go at him later, no doubt about that. It

:40:43.:40:53.

is Scotland. Get used to it. Calvin would be used to this where he

:40:54.:41:03.

lives. It is rather warm up there. Queensland sounds a lot better at

:41:04.:41:08.

the moment. The Queensland Winter sounds a lot better. Just fell back.

:41:09.:41:28.

Hard for us to tell whose line. There we go. We are still getting

:41:29.:41:32.

happy, smiling faces. They have seen it all before. There is not much in

:41:33.:41:46.

that. Cutting the back of the blue bowl. Very difficult to get the

:41:47.:41:54.

contact absolutely solid with the wind conditions. I don't believe it!

:41:55.:42:04.

How did they both not go? She certainly moved it. That could make

:42:05.:42:10.

a difference. That was a good effort. That last bowl. Nice and dry

:42:11.:42:26.

underneath his hood. Dad is getting into the action. Go on, dad. Don't

:42:27.:42:46.

muscle in with the young ones. She needs a bowl out clean. It touched

:42:47.:42:51.

the jack but I think it has gone to the blue. No, it hasn't! It has held

:42:52.:43:01.

on. That was a horrible result. A ball out clean was worth four or

:43:02.:43:09.

five. So close but it didn't work. Well, I would suggest if England are

:43:10.:43:18.

allowing the shot here, they would go away from it just taking the

:43:19.:43:22.

single. That is exactly what they are doing. That was lucky from

:43:23.:43:30.

Margaret. She was looking for the punch out for five. Hit the blue

:43:31.:43:36.

ball but the England ball followed through as well. Instead of getting

:43:37.:43:56.

a four or a five she loses a single. The rain seems to have eased off a

:43:57.:44:03.

little bit. Sophie is not too worried. Kept her jacket on but

:44:04.:44:17.

didn't need any headgear. Waterproof lip gloss I think. A good starter as

:44:18.:44:28.

well. It doesn't get any better than that. She has played well so far in

:44:29.:44:51.

this match. It is a first bowl, it is OK. Better there than dropping

:44:52.:45:00.

short. The sun is coming out now! I wonder are we going to be in for a

:45:01.:45:07.

little bit of a heat wave for the next five minutes - before the next

:45:08.:45:14.

batch of rain arrives! Good stuff from Sophie. This one has got a bit

:45:15.:45:22.

of work to come down off that swinging hand. Comings -- coming

:45:23.:45:29.

through nicely. Very good, that brings her back bowl right into

:45:30.:45:35.

play. That needs to hold. Coming back into

:45:36.:45:41.

an OK home in behind. Ellen playing a bit more wide on

:45:42.:46:29.

this occasion. Into something - her own bowl. Well, they got three good

:46:30.:46:37.

bowls there around it. That is a good position for England. Scotland

:46:38.:46:43.

might be holding the shot, but they need another bowl in. And they could

:46:44.:46:49.

give it away here. Margaret's happy. That is a bowl in. That is good. A

:46:50.:47:04.

bit of sustainance. A bit of sugar required with a sweetie. She is a

:47:05.:47:07.

very experienced bowler. The bowls are getting dried off. It

:47:08.:47:43.

won't take much. It's warm out there.

:47:44.:47:55.

That is not bad. Pushes that bowl into a good position.

:47:56.:49:06.

in behind. A controlled weight again. Oh, just finding the gap.

:49:07.:49:53.

Oh! Margaret's thinking to herself, look what happened the last time

:49:54.:50:01.

when I tried to take a bowl out, lost a shot. Didn't want to lose

:50:02.:50:06.

this one. But turned the bowl over for a double. So it is a good

:50:07.:50:08.

result. The margin are potentially very

:50:09.:51:19.

close in this particular section. There is Claire

:51:20.:51:27.

close in this particular section. Scottish League. PNG in third place.

:51:28.:51:28.

Northern Ireland haven't registered a win. They have two losses and

:51:29.:51:37.

minus 14. But they're seven or eight shots up on PNG at the moment. So

:51:38.:51:42.

that would actually bring them in front of PNG if they win. But if

:51:43.:51:49.

England who have a shot difference of zero, well that could make a

:51:50.:51:54.

massive difference there, if they lose this match to Scotland. They're

:51:55.:51:59.

very much in the mix. Well both of them finding very good

:52:00.:52:16.

line. Pushed that a little bit too far.

:52:17.:52:47.

Lauren is a new name to us. Ellen is different of course. In terms of her

:52:48.:52:53.

profile in the sport, she has been around a long time. Very much a

:52:54.:53:00.

stalwart of the indoor and outdoor team.

:53:01.:53:34.

Ellen just getting the wrong edge of that bowl. The weight was good.

:53:35.:54:02.

The English bowl visible from the mat. They will looking to set that

:54:03.:54:10.

through. Playing a reaching shot. Oh it us

:54:11.:54:30.

just going underneath. It may well have done it. Not exactly route A!

:54:31.:54:38.

But she will take it. Margaret will take that every single time. She had

:54:39.:54:46.

some bad luck in this match as well, I have to say.

:54:47.:55:10.

We are going to have the leave the bowls, but you can keep watching it

:55:11.:55:19.

op the red button. Now time to find out what is happening in the news.

:55:20.:55:26.

We've got factory boys and butchers' apprentices and office clerks

:55:27.:55:29.

Don't stop moving! If you go back you'll die!

:55:30.:55:34.

Back to Glasgow after a quick update on Three.

:55:35.:55:53.

The deadly Ebola epidemic is a threat to the UK.

:55:54.:55:56.

That's the message from ministers here.

:55:57.:55:57.

Doctors have been told to be on alert.

:55:58.:55:59.

The outbreak in West Africa has killed hundreds.

:56:00.:56:02.

Usain Bolt says claims he rubbished the Glasgow Games are nonsense.

:56:03.:56:05.

The sprinter's hit back at newspaper reports.

:56:06.:56:08.

He tweeted "please don't create lies to make headlines."

:56:09.:56:11.

Twitter says the number of us using the site has gone up 24% in a year.

:56:12.:56:14.

It's despite it making losses of ?86 million from March til June.

:56:15.:56:20.

A new study says doing just that saves lives.

:56:21.:56:25.

But it also suggests eating more than that has no extra benefit.

:56:26.:56:28.

This is what you call a terrifying near miss.

:56:29.:56:31.

Two women in Indiana narrowly avoided being hit by a freight

:56:32.:56:35.

They did it by lying between the tracks.

:56:36.:56:40.

More later, right now let's get back to Lee

:56:41.:56:46.

This ashram of yours, it might be a cult.

:56:47.:57:08.

I leave the ashram, travel halfway across the world to find my father,

:57:09.:57:13.

Oh, well. As Vashrati says, gotta keep smiling!

:57:14.:57:21.

We don't tend to use the bathroom together here.

:57:22.:57:23.

All right, well, I'll catch you later.

:57:24.:57:25.

This ashram of yours, it might be a cult.

:57:26.:57:28.

I take it back, he's definitely Cuckoo's son.

:57:29.:57:32.

Welcome back. One of my demands is I wanted dogs on the sofa and look

:57:33.:58:02.

what we have gotment Tilly is very excitable. Lena is much quieter and

:58:03.:58:13.

er and we have Aggie. Some were quieter at the opening ceremony.

:58:14.:58:19.

Over my shoulder, outside at the SECC is the boxing. The men are in

:58:20.:58:23.

action today and John is there for us. I'm so jealous. I want a dog

:58:24.:58:30.

here. Can you bring one over I shall deliver you a dog. I like the one in

:58:31.:58:36.

the middle. Can I have that one? Tilly, she is out of control, that

:58:37.:58:43.

is what we are trying to say. I have got a spripger spaniel that is

:58:44.:58:48.

always out of control. I like dogs that don't adhere to the rules. You

:58:49.:58:52.

can hear the alarm here. That is to say there is about a minute to kick

:58:53.:58:58.

off. We have a tremendous afternoon of boxing with loads of competitors

:58:59.:59:03.

from the home nations. We have the four bantamweight quarter-finals and

:59:04.:59:11.

four home nations all remitted. First Michael Conlon from Northern

:59:12.:59:21.

Ireland. And Sean McGoldrick is fighting. And Johan is the only man

:59:22.:59:27.

from Glasgow in the Scottish team. And he is playing the representative

:59:28.:59:34.

from England. There it says - Glasgow 2014 in the middle of the

:59:35.:59:39.

ring. We are being counted down. Michael Conlon will be the first

:59:40.:59:45.

fighter we will see. He is rooming with Paddy Barnes, the other great

:59:46.:59:50.

Northern Ireland hope for a medal and they're egging each other on.

:59:51.:00:12.

And here we go. They are almost competing with each other. Northern

:00:13.:00:14.

Ireland were the top boxing nation in India four years ago. They want

:00:15.:00:23.

to repeat that. The competition with only Northern Ireland team is

:00:24.:00:27.

extraordinary. They are all staying in the same house and all want to go

:00:28.:00:31.

home with the same colour of medal. He is the first quarterfinal. It

:00:32.:00:36.

will be a busy Wednesday afternoon. It is medals all the way for the

:00:37.:00:55.

winners this afternoon. Session number 11 on day six of the

:00:56.:00:58.

Commonwealth Games boxing tournament. There are five judges at

:00:59.:01:11.

ringside, three of them selected at random. The referee is from Sri

:01:12.:01:25.

Lanka. There is the man who is rated number two in the entire world of

:01:26.:01:32.

amateur boxing at this bantamweight division. He is sharing a room with

:01:33.:01:39.

great friend and fellow Belfast native Paddy Barnes. He got a nasty

:01:40.:01:49.

cut on his scalp in the first round of his contest. The man from Uganda

:01:50.:01:58.

is just 20 years of age. Very much the favourite for gold in

:01:59.:02:30.

this division is Very much the favourite for gold in

:02:31.:02:38.

from Northern Ireland. Boxing in his second Commonwealth Games. He got

:02:39.:02:42.

bronze in London at the 62 kilograms division. He just eased past his

:02:43.:02:50.

opening two opponents without many worries. He is in against a shorter,

:02:51.:02:59.

chunky man who is very strong and will come forward. Michael Conlon

:03:00.:03:02.

will have to be at his counterpunching best. It is only

:03:03.:03:10.

about the sixth or seventh time we have seen two southpaws. On paper,

:03:11.:03:22.

Conlon should win this contest. His opponent, Nasir, is shorter. He has

:03:23.:03:33.

to get his timing right. It is a straightforward opponent in front of

:03:34.:03:36.

him. Southport can be difficult but he is at -- an aggressive southpaw

:03:37.:03:40.

who comes forward. The man from Uganda is warned to

:03:41.:03:49.

watch his head. He looks very confident at this

:03:50.:04:09.

higher weight and looks to have put on muscle. He is using that to good

:04:10.:04:13.

effect in the early stages. The referee will have a word with Nasir

:04:14.:04:24.

if he keeps leading with his head. Four years ago, Conlon was

:04:25.:04:29.

disappointed in the 52 kilograms division after winning his opening

:04:30.:04:34.

couple of contest. He got to the stage and was beaten by Jason

:04:35.:04:40.

Maloney. It was 10-10 but they gave it to the Australian who had thrown

:04:41.:04:44.

the greater volume of punches. Conlon was incandescent. He has got

:04:45.:04:53.

an Olympic medal and a European medal. He is a couple of rounds a

:04:54.:04:57.

way of getting a Commonwealth Games medal. He is going about at the

:04:58.:05:02.

right way. Using good skills. Nice single shots. He is using that beach

:05:03.:05:08.

advantage well. The pace is sitting Conlon down to the ground. His

:05:09.:05:14.

opponent 's attacks to protect -- predictable and he's not quick

:05:15.:05:25.

enough on his feet. He has got a good rate hook when he is boxing

:05:26.:05:30.

like that. Good round for Conlon. No real problems. Sensible boxing. The

:05:31.:05:46.

man in front of them is his dad. -- in front of him. You can see how he

:05:47.:05:53.

adjusted his feet the to bring him onto the hook. Good right hand, and

:05:54.:06:00.

again. Sensible, clever boxing. He got all the babe judges, no problem

:06:01.:06:14.

at all. 10-94 all of them. -- 10-9 for all of them.

:06:15.:06:32.

There is a delay because the rest of the Ugandan boxer has to be tucked

:06:33.:06:42.

into the trunks or shorts, call them what you will. The white waistband

:06:43.:06:50.

has to be visible because that is the line we be roughly can judge if

:06:51.:06:55.

a blow is illegal. So forth that is illegal and pretty painful. -- south

:06:56.:07:10.

of that. Conlon is looking strong and purposeful. The only thing that

:07:11.:07:16.

common has to watch out for is the clash of heads. He has to keep his

:07:17.:07:21.

distance and from the central -- from the centre of the rink. The

:07:22.:07:26.

Ugandan is too slow with his feet. He needs to quicken the pace. Conlon

:07:27.:07:36.

is boxing within himself. He has chosen the correct tactics. The

:07:37.:07:42.

referee told him to get on with it and he kept battling his opponent.

:07:43.:07:53.

There was no command to stop. Conlon is now boxing from the orthodox

:07:54.:08:02.

stance. That was a bit of a slap from the Ugandan. Conlon now coming

:08:03.:08:14.

forward. It sued -- it should suit the counterpunching Southport but he

:08:15.:08:28.

does not have the confidence. -- southpaw.

:08:29.:08:34.

Bid is one minute to go until the end of the second round. It is a bit

:08:35.:08:45.

of a scrappy contest. Not the contest Conlon would've wanted. He

:08:46.:08:50.

has boxed within himself. It is fairly easy tactics. He shows his

:08:51.:08:55.

skill and class by adjusting his feet. He needs to watch 's head on

:08:56.:09:07.

the inside. -- watch his head. The Ugandan is all over the place and he

:09:08.:09:13.

is finding Conlon really awkward. The referee is going to have to say

:09:14.:09:19.

something to Nasir if he keeps doing this. He keeps bringing his head

:09:20.:09:33.

into Conlon 's left side. The referee told the Ugandan not to hold

:09:34.:09:41.

and two watches head. -- and to watch his head.

:09:42.:09:46.

Good around from Conlon. He will be well pleased with the performance up

:09:47.:09:58.

to now. He is boxing within himself. He goes back at his opponent.

:09:59.:10:07.

Keeping his distance and works the body with some shots. Fairly simple.

:10:08.:10:14.

He won the round. Pretty good for Michael Conlon. You should add

:10:15.:10:22.

Commonwealth Court -- Commonwealth bronze to the Olympic bronze.

:10:23.:10:42.

I think they have told him to go out and see if he can stop this big

:10:43.:10:50.

fellow from Northern Ireland. And three, Michael Conlon, rated number

:10:51.:10:55.

two in the world in this bantamweight decision. Favourite for

:10:56.:11:00.

gold. He got himself caught there. That is exactly what Nasir has to

:11:01.:11:07.

do. He has to have courage in both clubs. Conlon demonstrating good

:11:08.:11:14.

timing and accuracy. He caught with the right hand but that he had

:11:15.:11:19.

missed the target he would have left himself open. We have seen this so

:11:20.:11:24.

many times with boxers here, if they are not accurate they fall into

:11:25.:11:32.

trouble. He is boxing at distance very well. Lovely footwork. He

:11:33.:11:38.

clipped his man with a good right hand. The Ugandan started the

:11:39.:11:53.

tournament with abiding defeated the man from Tanzania. -- with a bye.

:11:54.:12:09.

This is the midpoint in the round. It is very scrappy. That is not a

:12:10.:12:20.

bad right hand from the Ugandan. This year is trying to increase the

:12:21.:12:36.

pace. -- Nasir. The Ugandan has not went through the gears. He has got

:12:37.:12:44.

Conlon with the odd shot. I would be more worried about him catching

:12:45.:12:50.

Conlon with the head. He looked at the referee after the last clash to

:12:51.:12:53.

see if you would do something about it. The Ugandan is still there but

:12:54.:13:01.

he is being outbox. There is the head again. Good right hand from

:13:02.:13:08.

Conlon. Best punch in the contest. The crowd in the SECC appreciated

:13:09.:13:12.

that. Good punch from Conlon. He gets him and -- again with another

:13:13.:13:19.

right hand. Last 20 seconds. Conlon opening up. The Ugandan is tiring by

:13:20.:13:24.

the second. The opening up. The Ugandan is tiring by

:13:25.:13:35.

Conlon is catching him. Ten seconds till the end. The is the bill.

:13:36.:13:48.

Michael Common has that one. -- Michael Conlon has won that one. He

:13:49.:13:55.

has demonstrated to the judges that he can go from the front foot.

:13:56.:13:57.

has demonstrated to the judges that he can He mixed it up. He got caught

:13:58.:14:04.

in that sequence. He went forward and post his man back in the last 40

:14:05.:14:10.

seconds. He has shown people that he can go on the front foot. The

:14:11.:14:15.

tactics were correct. He boxed from distance judging the entire boat.

:14:16.:14:25.

Conlon mixed it up nicely, being from orthodox to southpaw. The

:14:26.:14:31.

winner by unanimous decision and through to the semifinal, in the red

:14:32.:14:34.

corner from Northern Ireland, Michael Conlon. Guaranteed

:14:35.:14:42.

Commonwealth columns to go with Olympic silver. He is the fourth

:14:43.:14:49.

boxer from Northern Ireland to go through to the medals. It is a very

:14:50.:15:01.

good, competent performance by this fellow. He remains the man to beat

:15:02.:15:05.

in this very, very competitive decision. -- division.

:15:06.:15:27.

Confirmation, all of the judges gave it to Conlan. He is with John.

:15:28.:15:30.

Michael, that looked straightforward.

:15:31.:15:36.

Yes, it wasn't by far anywhere near a good performance for me.

:15:37.:15:40.

When you have won the first two rounds so convincingly, how

:15:41.:15:44.

difficult is it to keep up to consideration for the third?

:15:45.:15:47.

I was kind of getting a little bit board for the last round. I had to

:15:48.:15:50.

be careful because he is very dangerous with his head. I want to

:15:51.:15:59.

excel in this competition, so I made it a bit boring, but I did what I

:16:00.:16:02.

had to to win. You said that you are rooming with

:16:03.:16:08.

Paddy. Before you leave to go to work, effectively, do you say to

:16:09.:16:13.

each other, make sure you come back not having lost?

:16:14.:16:20.

Today on my way to the venue I saw Paddy with Craig, the announcer, so

:16:21.:16:29.

I was waiting on it coming on. They must not have had Barbie girls on

:16:30.:16:34.

the playlist. And from Northern Ireland to Wales

:16:35.:16:37.

now. The judges for this one from

:16:38.:16:42.

Morocco, Colombia, Croatia, Argentina and Belarus, and it is

:16:43.:16:46.

Wales against the Republic of South Africa. This promises to be a very

:16:47.:16:51.

interesting contest, because this fellow is not a bad operator, at

:16:52.:17:02.

all. Ayabonga Sonjica from East London. And this, the man who

:17:03.:17:10.

eventually got the gold medal in this division in Delhi four years

:17:11.:17:19.

ago. Sean McGoldrick is the shorter of

:17:20.:17:24.

the two. He was defeated in the final four years ago, but his

:17:25.:17:28.

opponent, Manju Wanniarachchi from Sri Lanka, failed a drugs test and

:17:29.:17:34.

was stripped of the middle which eventually found its way to Newport

:17:35.:17:48.

in Wales. A big contrast in styles, the man in the red is very tall.

:17:49.:18:00.

Both of them got bys, McGoldrick put in a pretty good performance to beat

:18:01.:18:03.

Jackson Woods from Australia. I am on the sun-seeker came through

:18:04.:18:08.

against the man who was -- Ayabonga Sonjica came through the man who was

:18:09.:18:12.

stripped of the gold medal four years ago, Manju Wanniarachchi.

:18:13.:18:21.

Sonjica in red for South Africa and the defending champion, Sean

:18:22.:18:24.

McGoldrick, in blue. Tactics are simple for McGoldrick,

:18:25.:18:30.

stay outside of that long reach from Sonjica. That is when he has to get

:18:31.:18:34.

him under pressure, on the ropes. Give this fellow the time and space,

:18:35.:18:38.

he is a good boxer, but he needs a written, the fellow in red. You have

:18:39.:18:44.

to deny him that. -- but he needs the room.

:18:45.:18:49.

This is good stuff by McGoldrick, a lot of pressure on his shoulders

:18:50.:18:52.

given what happened to Freddie Evans, who was a no-show, his

:18:53.:18:56.

accreditation was refused and the upset of the Games so far, the

:18:57.:18:59.

defeat of the world number one Andrew Selby by the little

:19:00.:19:07.

Glaswegian Reece McFadden. That head movement was lovely from

:19:08.:19:12.

McGoldrick, he has to punch off of that, moving the head left and right

:19:13.:19:15.

and coming out of the role with a left hook. He's dropping that

:19:16.:19:20.

right-hander. He is opening up, he just has to get in position to land

:19:21.:19:25.

that punch. I thought McGoldrick's ring work was

:19:26.:19:31.

terrific for that little 15 seconds, kept his man guessing in the neutral

:19:32.:19:33.

corner. Huge advantage of height and reach,

:19:34.:19:39.

the 23 old. Gold medal list earlier this year in the African Cup of

:19:40.:19:44.

Nations. -- gold medallist. He boxed in the Olympics a couple of

:19:45.:19:51.

years ago. Lots of experience there. Well into the last minute of this

:19:52.:19:55.

opening round, McGoldrick has done really well, his defence has been

:19:56.:19:58.

good. Around the kidney area with the

:19:59.:20:02.

left-hander from the Welshman. Sonjica trying to dig into the body

:20:03.:20:06.

butter McGoldrick with stalking him all the way and is making it very

:20:07.:20:11.

difficult. A little slip by Sonjica, McGoldrick catches him on the temple

:20:12.:20:13.

with all right. -- with a right. I have to say, Ritchie, this is a

:20:14.:20:25.

much better performance by McGoldrick than the one we saw

:20:26.:20:29.

against Jackson Woods. He has the tactics right, he just

:20:30.:20:33.

has to find the quality shots on the inside. He has to think with the jab

:20:34.:20:41.

and get that right-hander to his large opponent, a large target area

:20:42.:20:42.

to hit. That good little right came in and

:20:43.:21:04.

that certainly would have scored. Sonjica keeps off the ropes, he

:21:05.:21:09.

knows that is a bad position to be in. He does Taz two of the judges'

:21:10.:21:14.

scores. He has to find the quality on the inside here. He has the

:21:15.:21:19.

opportunity but he has to land with good, solid punches.

:21:20.:21:27.

2-1 favourite, this man. McGoldrick is having to step up the pace and

:21:28.:21:31.

accuracy in the second round. It is still there for him, though.

:21:32.:21:47.

We saw his club coach just about an hour ago, pretty confident that

:21:48.:21:54.

McGoldrick could do it, but he has to find some more scoring shots

:21:55.:21:57.

against this fellow, who is making life awkward for him.

:21:58.:22:03.

Better by McGoldrick, straight in, left then right, he needs more of

:22:04.:22:11.

those. Somehow he has to find his way past the long right-hander of

:22:12.:22:15.

his South African opponent. Yes, jinking little movements from

:22:16.:22:19.

left to the Right then these little double jobs, sometimes a series of

:22:20.:22:24.

jabs to close down the, then he has to go to work downstairs.

:22:25.:22:29.

That was a slip, will spotted by the referee. Sonjica was holding

:22:30.:22:34.

McGoldrick on the referee's blindside.

:22:35.:22:39.

Good food work from this tall, rangy fellow. How he squeezes

:22:40.:22:41.

Good food work from this tall, rangy into this big spindly frame I have

:22:42.:22:48.

no idea. Good food work yet again. He moves

:22:49.:22:53.

away to his right and clips McGoldrick around the ear.

:22:54.:23:00.

That was a shot! Nothing wrong with that.

:23:01.:23:04.

That was right hand, referee. I am sure that punch connected there.

:23:05.:23:10.

I am pretty sure myself. That will give McGoldrick a lot of confidence

:23:11.:23:13.

now. He has to do it again, and again.

:23:14.:23:19.

A good right into the chest by McGoldrick, avoiding the southpaw

:23:20.:23:20.

right of Sonjica. Sonjica is looking a bit on the wary

:23:21.:23:30.

side. He knows if he stands still and McGoldrick gets into him, the

:23:31.:23:36.

Welshman can hurt him. Last minute of the second, better

:23:37.:23:39.

round by McGoldrick, he has landed the cleaner shots of this one.

:23:40.:23:44.

He is picking his punches now. He just has to get up a little bit. He

:23:45.:23:49.

waits occasionally too long. When he is waiting he has to move

:23:50.:23:54.

his head, draw the leader of the opponent, make him miss and maybe

:23:55.:24:00.

come back with a counter. Thinking about that classic left

:24:01.:24:04.

hook, which is the best counter to a southpaw. Sonjica is very wary,

:24:05.:24:10.

McGoldrick again to the body. Long arms making it difficult. Good shot

:24:11.:24:14.

by McGoldrick, nice straight left hand. He took a left in return as he

:24:15.:24:19.

moved away from danger. We said the accuracy has to be

:24:20.:24:22.

better from McGoldrick. He has definitely done that this

:24:23.:24:26.

round. He is hitting the target more often, picking his shots. Better

:24:27.:24:32.

work from McGoldrick. It is going to be tricky -- pretty

:24:33.:24:41.

even going into the last. Much better work by him, he upped the

:24:42.:24:46.

pace. Sonjica under a little bit of pressure for the first time in that

:24:47.:24:53.

second round. A better round for McGoldrick, he

:24:54.:24:57.

picked his shots better. A couple of shots went in there that scored, the

:24:58.:25:04.

right, super shot for McGoldrick. Just steadied himself.

:25:05.:25:11.

Good jab. Right-hander. Just gets clipped coming out, so he has to

:25:12.:25:15.

keep the guard up when he is coming out.

:25:16.:25:17.

Let's look at the scores. I am amazed at that, I thought that

:25:18.:25:21.

was a much better round for McGoldrick, I don't agree with that

:25:22.:25:29.

at all. It is going to be a difficult task

:25:30.:25:44.

for him. Sean McGoldrick has to produce the

:25:45.:25:48.

three minutes of his oxen life so far if he is to retain the medal

:25:49.:25:52.

that he won in controversial circumstances four years ago. He got

:25:53.:25:55.

the silver in this division, his opponent failed a drugs test and was

:25:56.:26:00.

stripped of the gold medal. McGoldrick wants to attain it under

:26:01.:26:04.

his own steam, so to speak, but he really has to put in a last round of

:26:05.:26:07.

immense quality and high scoring and he has to get close to do that. This

:26:08.:26:12.

fellow is up on his toes. He must now know that, believe it or not, he

:26:13.:26:16.

is in the lead, and that will give them a lot of confidence. That is a

:26:17.:26:20.

very different Sonjica in this round can he looks more confident. He

:26:21.:26:23.

looks like a man who thinks he's going to win this.

:26:24.:26:28.

He is up on his toes, probably realises he has to stay in the

:26:29.:26:32.

centre of the ring. Rarely does he go back to the ropes, but that is

:26:33.:26:36.

where McGoldrick has to force him. He has to be quicker with the

:26:37.:26:39.

attacks and to sustain the pressure more. He has to get on his front

:26:40.:26:43.

foot, move the head, target the body, switch the attack. Plenty of

:26:44.:26:47.

punches and he has to work at a higher work rate.

:26:48.:26:51.

He has been at one place all the way through, which has been his main

:26:52.:26:56.

failing. He is getting picked off. Sonjica has read most of his side to

:26:57.:26:57.

side movements pretty well. Good food work again by this tall,

:26:58.:27:09.

spindly, spidery South African. This is where he has to go to work

:27:10.:27:12.

now. That is better. Keep them there.

:27:13.:27:18.

He has cut off his exit route, smooth left or right, which ever way

:27:19.:27:22.

he goes, he has let him off the ropes and he has to keep them in

:27:23.:27:24.

that position. Good punching by Sonjica. And

:27:25.:27:35.

again, southpaw right followed by the left cross. He has been catching

:27:36.:27:40.

McGoldrick. Work the body now, Sean, you have to

:27:41.:27:44.

do work the body when you get them into a corner.

:27:45.:27:47.

It has slipped away from the Welshman. Less than a minute to go,

:27:48.:27:53.

Sonjica looking very confident. Sean McGoldrick has been perhaps a little

:27:54.:27:56.

too tentative. He did not want to take the chance of coming in and

:27:57.:28:00.

getting caught, but he has to take that chance.

:28:01.:28:04.

He has boxed very well. Just waiting to long, McGoldrick. He

:28:05.:28:16.

has to move ahead and go downstairs. Sonjica in a bit of trouble and has

:28:17.:28:20.

to hang on, but I think it is all a bit too late.

:28:21.:28:24.

The referee brings them together for the last time. He has signified ten

:28:25.:28:30.

seconds to go. Then one comes steaming forwards but

:28:31.:28:34.

it comes to late for him. -- McGoldrick comes forwards.

:28:35.:28:39.

Sonjica staying out of trouble and he is pretty confident he has got

:28:40.:28:44.

it. Big hugs from Colin Jones and a slap

:28:45.:28:50.

on the back for Sean McGoldrick. A difficult man to box against,

:28:51.:28:54.

tall, rangy, good on his feet, good movement, it was a hard jump for

:28:55.:28:59.

Sean McGoldrick to close that gap down. He did occasionally and got

:29:00.:29:03.

through with some good shots. I would just have liked to have seen

:29:04.:29:07.

him work that body more of the taller man. Good right-hander from

:29:08.:29:16.

McGoldrick. That little smile, I don't think he has done enough,

:29:17.:29:18.

though. I would agree with you, Richard.

:29:19.:29:23.

Is the defending Commonwealth champion in this very good 56

:29:24.:29:34.

kilograms division going out? We have a split decision. In favour

:29:35.:29:39.

of the winner, now through to the semifinal, in the blue corner...

:29:40.:29:47.

Scottish! My word, he robbed of that last

:29:48.:29:51.

round. The judges gave it to him and

:29:52.:29:56.

overall there were two micro judges scoring 29, 28 in McGoldrick's

:29:57.:30:00.

favour. And all of a sudden Sean McGoldrick

:30:01.:30:07.

has got a lifeline. Well, that is interesting. He thought he won the

:30:08.:30:12.

first, we were not sure if he won the third, the judges saw it

:30:13.:30:19.

completely differently. My, oh my. Sonjica cannot believe it, he is

:30:20.:30:23.

devastated and there is a mixed with both relief and a delight on the

:30:24.:30:28.

face of Sean McGoldrick. We will be talking to John any

:30:29.:30:41.

second now. In. He had good attributes and use them well. We had

:30:42.:30:51.

a game plan and I stop to it. I felt comfortable and in control. This

:30:52.:30:54.

will be a tough semifinal against Michael. We look forward to senior

:30:55.:31:00.

into my days time. We have got an Anglo Scottish competition about to

:31:01.:31:07.

take place. The performance director for sport Scotland has been

:31:08.:31:10.

masterminding a plan to get Scotland as many medals as possible. It is

:31:11.:31:17.

brilliant for us. We are 137. We said we would go for the best ever.

:31:18.:31:23.

That was more than 34. What is astonishing is we have got the best

:31:24.:31:29.

ever number of goals. We have got 15. Very strong in the boxing and

:31:30.:31:34.

Joe Ham is about to come. We have only got three boxers through to the

:31:35.:31:39.

medal fights. I think it is more than ten medals they are. He is the

:31:40.:31:44.

only Glaswegian in the Scottish boxing team. They are all here to

:31:45.:31:49.

support him. We were at the hockey this morning which was

:31:50.:31:53.

disappointing. This man is a great fighter. He will be there to the

:31:54.:31:55.

end. Thank you for talking to us. fighter. He will be there to the

:31:56.:32:08.

was about to say that he is here with his familiar blue Mohican but

:32:09.:32:09.

he has changed his hair colour. For some reason the blue rinse has

:32:10.:32:30.

disappeared. Letters hope he has not lost his lucky mask that. -- mascot.

:32:31.:33:13.

By my reckoning this is the fifth Scotland England contest here in

:33:14.:33:23.

Glasgow 2014. It is free-mac-1 to England. -- 3-1 to England. The

:33:24.:33:42.

opponent in blue from Leeds is Qais Ashfaq. You know him from the Great

:33:43.:33:53.

Britain squad. He is a southpaw. I think that some of the Scottish lads

:33:54.:33:58.

have got it wrong. Ross Henderson and Keegan is that when they have

:33:59.:34:02.

boxed against the English boxers. They have been aggressive because of

:34:03.:34:05.

the crowd but it has to be controlled. Joe Ham is waiting and

:34:06.:34:14.

being more cautious. It is the right thing to do. You cannot walk on two

:34:15.:34:20.

shots you have to control your aggression. They met in the final of

:34:21.:34:28.

the tournament in Finland last year. Qais Ashfaq one that would retain

:34:29.:34:32.

the title that he had won in the previous couple of years. Midway

:34:33.:34:37.

through the first round and nothing much between them. Good stuff

:34:38.:34:48.

southpaw jab by Qais Ashfaq. Good footwork by the Englishman as well.

:34:49.:34:52.

They left to the body did not connect. Joe Ham looking comfortable

:34:53.:35:00.

and not trying to force it. He has to be very weary of the strong,

:35:01.:35:05.

counterpunching man waving blue from England. That was a clash of heads.

:35:06.:35:12.

Qais Ashfaq grimaced a little bit. The referee let them work it out.

:35:13.:35:18.

The pace at the moment is sitting Qais Ashfaq. He prefers a slower

:35:19.:35:26.

pace. That is so he can see the attacks coming. Good right hand by

:35:27.:35:35.

Joe Ham. Everything he does is cheered here in Glasgow. 30 seconds

:35:36.:35:42.

to the end of the first round. Not much between them. Qais Ashfaq is

:35:43.:35:52.

landing the clean shots. That was a bit of a wobble. I do not know if

:35:53.:36:00.

that was a slip or a punch. What a busy round this has been. Ten

:36:01.:36:07.

seconds to go. He is looking to land his right hand.

:36:08.:36:14.

There is the clash of heads. You have to watch that. That was a

:36:15.:36:40.

stumble. It was not a punch. Very close one to score. The judges are

:36:41.:36:58.

split. One judge has given it to the Joe Ham, two Gavin acted Qais

:36:59.:37:10.

Ashfaq. It was very close. -- two judges have given it to Qais Ashfaq.

:37:11.:37:23.

There are five judges at ringside but three of them are chosen

:37:24.:37:29.

randomly. The three of them who have the scorecards accepted do not know

:37:30.:37:31.

that the scorecards have been accepted.

:37:32.:37:38.

Joe Ham might well now that he is narrowly behind and will have to up

:37:39.:37:49.

the tempo. His opponent has boxed very well with the southpaw style.

:37:50.:37:54.

Joe Ham has not come to terms with it. Qais Ashfaq is a little bit

:37:55.:38:05.

quicker than Joe Ham. Joe Ham is looking for the right hand all of

:38:06.:38:11.

the time. He is too far away and is fallen short. Qais Ashfaq has got

:38:12.:38:20.

fast hands. Joe Ham is in great condition. That was another left

:38:21.:38:30.

from Qais Ashfaq. This is a better phone. He is wanting to

:38:31.:38:32.

from Qais Ashfaq. This is a better phone. He is wanting win the second

:38:33.:38:35.

round. Joe Ham is under pressure. The speed of Qais Ashfaq is the

:38:36.:38:43.

difference. Speed and accuracy. It is good boxing from the Englishman.

:38:44.:38:49.

Joe Ham has to come forward. He may walk onto more left from Qais

:38:50.:38:56.

Ashfaq. He has looked very comfortable and compose. Southpaw

:38:57.:39:04.

right and a very swift West Cross. He is catching Joe Ham almost at

:39:05.:39:08.

will. This is not a good run for the Scotsman. He is not throwing punches

:39:09.:39:20.

and combinations. He is allowing Qais Ashfaq to settle into a rhythm.

:39:21.:39:28.

The referee having a quick word with Joe Ham.

:39:29.:39:29.

The referee having a quick word Referees are now talking to boxing

:39:30.:39:35.

-- to boxers at this level. The only thing they used to say was to tell

:39:36.:39:43.

them to break. 30 seconds to go until the end of the second round. I

:39:44.:39:51.

will be very surprised until the end of the second round. I

:39:52.:39:55.

will be very if all three judges do not give it to Qais Ashfaq.

:39:56.:39:57.

will be very if all three judges do not give it to That was a punch

:39:58.:39:59.

round the back of the head by Joe Ham. Qais Ashfaq coming right back

:40:00.:40:04.

at him and catches him with eight good combination. They have put on a

:40:05.:40:12.

good show but the Englishman has finished off in style. He got the

:40:13.:40:19.

tactics right. The timing and the accuracy from Qais Ashfaq was

:40:20.:40:23.

superb. The speed is the key element. He was just caught with

:40:24.:40:30.

right over the top, that was the best punch by Joe Ham. Lovely right

:40:31.:40:34.

jab by Qais Ashfaq. best punch by Joe Ham. Lovely right

:40:35.:40:36.

jab by Kept his distance. The speed was fantastic. Joe Ham needs

:40:37.:40:51.

something very special in this round. I think they are telling him

:40:52.:41:06.

he needs more lateral movement as he has been becoming straightforward in

:41:07.:41:06.

straight lines. Qais Ashfaq aiming to become the

:41:07.:41:25.

fourth English winner in this, the fifth England versus Scotland

:41:26.:41:29.

contest in the boxing here in Glasgow. What a great tournament it

:41:30.:41:33.

has been apart from the odd controversy surrounding the lack of

:41:34.:41:36.

headgear and the cuts that has produced. The scoring has been very

:41:37.:41:42.

decent with no major decisions that have raised eyebrows, never mind

:41:43.:41:54.

split eyebrows. Qais Ashfaq has been too quick for Joe Ham. Especially in

:41:55.:42:12.

the second round. He is holding. Good work yet again by Qais Ashfaq.

:42:13.:42:18.

The problems for Joe Ham is his feet, they are too slow. He needs to

:42:19.:42:23.

get into range faster and full shots. He is waiting too long and

:42:24.:42:28.

that is suiting the style of Qais Ashfaq. If you are slow and what in

:42:29.:42:35.

on straight lines you will walk into shots. Joe Ham does not have many

:42:36.:42:47.

ideas to counter him. Listen to the support the crowd are giving him.

:42:48.:42:54.

Qais Ashfaq from the start of the second round has boxed quite

:42:55.:43:02.

splendidly. The speed and the movement has been key for Qais

:43:03.:43:06.

Ashfaq. He is keeping his distance. We have just seen the most decent

:43:07.:43:14.

left hook from Joe Ham. He is very square when he comes forward. Great

:43:15.:43:25.

stuff by Qais Ashfaq. Doubling up hooks to the body and then to the

:43:26.:43:33.

head. And another sudden looking left. Joe Ham takes a good shot but

:43:34.:43:38.

he has taken too many for his liking, or for his corners liking.

:43:39.:43:44.

He is still coming forward. He will give it everything for this last

:43:45.:43:50.

half minute. He has got plenty of heart and plenty of bottle. He keeps

:43:51.:43:57.

making mistakes and walking on shots. Qais Ashfaq has been in

:43:58.:44:03.

confident form since the start of the second round. Lovely little foot

:44:04.:44:09.

-- little hook and he tells joke hand to come on. He has done it.

:44:10.:44:14.

Great performance from the English bantamweight. One of the best

:44:15.:44:26.

performances of his career. If you are being honest, they fell in the

:44:27.:44:32.

blue vest had all the way. He had these speed, skill, timing and

:44:33.:44:36.

accuracy. He lowered Joe Ham onto the shots. His feet were too slow

:44:37.:44:43.

throughout this contest. the shots. His feet were too slow

:44:44.:44:49.

coming forward to school and in what onto punches. This fellow has

:44:50.:45:04.

clearly won it. The winner, by unanimous decision

:45:05.:45:13.

come in the blue corner... Qais Ashfaq gets the nod. All three

:45:14.:45:19.

judges have given it to him, and Qais Ashfaq has guaranteed at the

:45:20.:45:25.

very least a bronze medal for England in one of the best divisions

:45:26.:45:30.

in the whole tournament here. Joe Ham gave it his all in front of his

:45:31.:45:35.

home crowd. It wasn't to be. For the second time in just over a year he

:45:36.:45:39.

has lost to this man and the winner and through to the semis is the man

:45:40.:45:41.

from England, Qais Ashfaq. He is very happy about that, he

:45:42.:45:50.

really boxed supremely well, particularly from the start of the

:45:51.:45:54.

second round on, and the southpaw style of his had a little bit too

:45:55.:45:56.

much for Joe Ham. He is with John. Well done, guys, that was a terrific

:45:57.:46:10.

contest. Never mind the punching, your footwork was outstanding.

:46:11.:46:16.

He seemed to be a bit slow on his feet, so my footwork did the job.

:46:17.:46:20.

Joe, hard lines, it was a tough old white, wasn't it?

:46:21.:46:26.

It is hard to press him down, his footwork is one of the best in

:46:27.:46:29.

Britain, so he is hard to press down.

:46:30.:46:30.

footwork is one of the best in Britain, so he is He knew that was

:46:31.:46:33.

the way. If he's good and traded it would be a different fight, but he

:46:34.:46:37.

just did what he had to do. Fair play.

:46:38.:46:41.

I have to ask you, what happened to the blue hair? I couldn't be

:46:42.:46:44.

bothered doing it this morning, I was too focused on the fight.

:46:45.:46:49.

Last word, because the next boat is coming into the Bing, you have a

:46:50.:46:55.

medal, congratulations. How do you view the next three days crash at I

:46:56.:46:59.

will get rested. But all credit to go, he is a very

:47:00.:47:02.

good kid. It was a great contest, thank you,

:47:03.:47:07.

guys, well done. A very good win indeed for Qais

:47:08.:47:11.

Ashfaq against the Scottish champion, Joe Ham. We will be back

:47:12.:47:15.

for live boxing at the SECC later in the programme including the

:47:16.:47:19.

heavyweight bout with Warren based from England, as well. Just a

:47:20.:47:23.

reminder that the BBC Red Button is the thing you have to fit to

:47:24.:47:26.

continue watching boxing, and you can catch up with all the sports in

:47:27.:47:30.

:47:31.:47:33.

of the sports that are happening life are on the website at the

:47:34.:47:40.

moment. Not only can you watch the action live, you can also use the

:47:41.:47:44.

scroll bar and the timeline to see all the highlights, as well. There

:47:45.:47:46.

it is, bbc.co.uk/glasgow2014. We will be going back to live boxing

:47:47.:47:58.

in the men's heavyweight division shortly, but the biggest name in the

:47:59.:48:03.

ring at this Commonwealth Games is undoubtedly Nicola Adams. She made

:48:04.:48:06.

history in London 2912 and this week in Glasgow she hopes to repeat that

:48:07.:48:12.

at the Commonwealth Games. -- London 2012.

:48:13.:48:16.

Nicola Adams has come out blazing. Amazing boxing by Adams.

:48:17.:48:21.

Just three minutes boxing stand between her and Olympic immortality.

:48:22.:48:25.

I have a massive target on my back now, I think. I step in the ring

:48:26.:48:30.

that person wants a piece of what I have got. They want to feel what it

:48:31.:48:34.

is like to be Nicola Adams, what it is like to have what he has got.

:48:35.:48:37.

Nicola Adams has just made history! Every time I get in that ring, I

:48:38.:48:48.

have to bring my a game. Every opponent, no matter whether they are

:48:49.:48:53.

good, bad, whether they are not as experienced as me, when they come up

:48:54.:48:58.

against in the eye giving me 100%. They are probably boxing better than

:48:59.:49:04.

they ever have done in their lives. Before women's boxing was in the

:49:05.:49:07.

Olympic Games, people did not know what it was good to be like, what to

:49:08.:49:11.

expect, the standard, the technique. But we proved in there that we are

:49:12.:49:16.

just as good as the men, just as technical, we have a lot of skill.

:49:17.:49:21.

I think that is why so many people fell in love with women's boxing

:49:22.:49:25.

after the Games. As a person, I am still the same

:49:26.:49:35.

person, I am still Nicola Adams that used to live in Leeds, I walk my dog

:49:36.:49:39.

on the same field I have always walk my dog on. I don't think that is

:49:40.:49:45.

ever going to change. My friends and family have kept me grounded and it

:49:46.:49:50.

is just going to be me. It is the first time women's boxing

:49:51.:49:53.

is going to be in the Commonwealth Games. It is another chance to

:49:54.:49:57.

hopefully make history again. I want to be bigger, better, I want

:49:58.:50:04.

to be stronger, faster. Maybe some more shovels in there, as well, for

:50:05.:50:09.

the crowd. I want my skills to be unbelievable by the time I get to

:50:10.:50:15.

the Commonwealth Games. -- may be some more shuffles. It will be

:50:16.:50:17.

really exciting, I have seen the venue for the finals and it will be

:50:18.:50:22.

absolutely epic. It is a chance to make history again, becoming the

:50:23.:50:28.

first ever Commonwealth Games gold medallist and then reopen as well.

:50:29.:50:33.

We have never had a double limbic champion in boxing, male or female,

:50:34.:50:36.

and I would love to add that to my bow. -- double Olympic champion.

:50:37.:50:45.

That smile just lit up London 2012. In Glasgow it is going to be

:50:46.:50:49.

lighting up the boxing arena over on the south side of the river. That is

:50:50.:50:54.

the picture in Glasgow live now. We have had wonderful weather last week

:50:55.:50:57.

and it has changed ever so slightly, that is looking down to the centre

:50:58.:51:02.

of Glasgow. That is Argyle Street in Glasgow, I believe. Looking not so

:51:03.:51:10.

nice, but busy, busy, busy. That is over the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and

:51:11.:51:16.

Museum. That is the brown, red sandstone building. That is where

:51:17.:51:19.

the Kelvingrove Lawn Bowls Centre happening. Let's talk about boxing,

:51:20.:51:27.

Joe Ham was defeated by England boss Michael Qais Ashfaq. He will meet

:51:28.:51:31.

the leader of the contest currently between Tafari Ebanks of the Cayman

:51:32.:51:50.

Islands and Benson Njangiru of tenure. -- Kenya.

:51:51.:52:04.

Just a little did more aggressive, I think, from Njangiru.

:52:05.:52:21.

Second round, then, of this final men's bantamweight quarterfinal, the

:52:22.:52:28.

56 kilograms division. The man coming out of the blue corner, the

:52:29.:52:35.

29-year-old from Kenya, Benson Njangiru, has been given the nod by

:52:36.:52:38.

all three judges, against his opponent who is ten years younger,

:52:39.:52:42.

from the Cayman Islands, Tafari Ebanks.

:52:43.:52:47.

Njangiru, we saw him a couple of years ago at the Olympic Games in

:52:48.:52:56.

London. He lost in the 52 kilograms division to the boxer from

:52:57.:53:03.

Uzbekistan. He has moved up to 56 and he is a lot shorter than his

:53:04.:53:07.

teenage opponent from the Cayman Islands, but there is more

:53:08.:53:10.

aggressive. He covers up very well, he has a great defence.

:53:11.:53:13.

Yes, it closes that gap very well then comes out of that guard and

:53:14.:53:17.

counterattacks now and again. Just sneaks in the odd shot.

:53:18.:53:23.

Those are good shots. Ebanks has to use his left more on

:53:24.:53:27.

the inside. He has a good left hook, the man in red. As he comes off the

:53:28.:53:30.

commendation he should finish on that.

:53:31.:53:34.

Njangiru starts to Open up a little bit more. I think young Ebanks will

:53:35.:53:38.

be in a lot of trouble now. There was a lovely uppercut straight

:53:39.:53:43.

through from Njangiru. He has put together in the opening minute more

:53:44.:53:46.

scoring shots than he did in the entire first round which he won on

:53:47.:53:52.

all three judges' cards. He is feeling the pace of this now,

:53:53.:53:57.

Njangiru, and he is feeling the hurt of those body shots. Njangiru

:53:58.:54:05.

looking very, very comfortable. He is a difficult man to actually

:54:06.:54:10.

get to, Njangiru. He keeps his guard high, the elbows tucked in. The --

:54:11.:54:14.

it is a difficult guard to penetrate.

:54:15.:54:19.

Well, he is romping this round. Tafari Ebanks has hardly laid his

:54:20.:54:23.

glove on him. Another good stabbing right from the Kenyan.

:54:24.:54:30.

That first shot he did throw was very tentative. Straight in those

:54:31.:54:37.

Njangiru. The young man is getting a bit of Russia locking here. -- a bit

:54:38.:54:49.

of a shellacking here. He waits for his opportunity, then

:54:50.:54:53.

he springs the attack, beats his opponents to the punch.

:54:54.:55:00.

He is pretty game, Tafari Ebanks comedy is coming forward and taking

:55:01.:55:04.

a lot of hard shots. He has to watch that left if it goes walkabout he

:55:05.:55:10.

could get himself caught round the corner with a right. Njangiru

:55:11.:55:13.

covering up, he has gone right into his shell and there is that right

:55:14.:55:17.

hand at the end. He took three or four shots on the gloves and

:55:18.:55:21.

forearms and responded brilliantly. The opening part of that round was

:55:22.:55:25.

terrific. Njangiru is looking good, what a good left hand to finish. He

:55:26.:55:31.

upped the pace considerably, he moved it from first to about third

:55:32.:55:35.

gear and there are still a couple more to come.

:55:36.:55:39.

I think so, he looks very well, this fellow. Difficult to get to with

:55:40.:55:44.

that high guard, then he just springs the attack. That was an

:55:45.:55:47.

example, he counterattacks and beats his opponent to the punch. Lovely

:55:48.:55:53.

shot, and again, and again. All from that peekaboo style. He walks onto a

:55:54.:56:00.

right uppercut there and left hand at the end of the round.

:56:01.:56:09.

Once again, 10-9 on all three judges' scoring cards.

:56:10.:56:17.

Boxed in the World Championships last year,

:56:18.:56:20.

Boxed in the World Championships last as did Njangiru, Tafari Ebanks.

:56:21.:56:25.

Loss to Brian Gonzales of Mexico in his opening contest.

:56:26.:56:31.

I am not altogether sure what Tafari Ebanks can do to win this contest,

:56:32.:56:37.

other than stop his man. The way Benson Njangiru has been defending,

:56:38.:56:41.

I think that will be tough for the teenager from the Cayman Islands in

:56:42.:56:47.

red. Njangiru from Kenya in blue, he has taken both rounds so far.

:56:48.:56:52.

Tentative start, but I am sure he will pick it up. He may well be

:56:53.:56:56.

saving himself for the medal stages and there is less than three minutes

:56:57.:56:59.

away from reaching those medal stages for his deck and success of

:57:00.:57:03.

Commonwealth Games. He got to the final in Delhi in the 52 kilograms

:57:04.:57:08.

division four years ago, had an injury and could not compete so had

:57:09.:57:11.

to settle for a silver. He does not want it here, though.

:57:12.:57:18.

Good fast hands from Tafari Ebanks, but most of them absorbed. The right

:57:19.:57:24.

hand went in front Ebanks, that was the best punch he has drawn all

:57:25.:57:28.

afternoon. We have seen signs at the end of the

:57:29.:57:33.

second round that Ebanks can go through the gears, and he just did

:57:34.:57:36.

there. He just has to upped the tempo and go for it, he has nothing

:57:37.:57:42.

to lose. He has to put on a bit of pressure. He has fast hands, he has

:57:43.:57:44.

to use them. A little bit more schooling and more

:57:45.:57:55.

experience and Tafari Ebanks could be a prospect.

:57:56.:58:00.

He just makes that mistake of dropping the left hand, even when he

:58:01.:58:04.

is in punching range. That hand is still at his chest and that is why

:58:05.:58:08.

he keeps getting caught with these right hands from Njangiru.

:58:09.:58:12.

He keeps coming forward, that was a bit of a slap with the left hand.

:58:13.:58:17.

Njangiru has him where he wants him, right in front of him and close to

:58:18.:58:19.

the ropes. It has been a better round so far

:58:20.:58:28.

for Tafari Ebanks. Njangiru tags him with a good left, lovely bodywork by

:58:29.:58:33.

the Kenyan. Better movement. Years in and out

:58:34.:58:38.

now, Njangiru, whereas Ebanks is flat-footed.

:58:39.:58:42.

That was a slip, nice gesture by Ebanks, he bent over to give his

:58:43.:58:52.

mind a hand up -- to give his man and up. He got a round of applause

:58:53.:58:57.

for that from this grade in the SECC, what are delightfully

:58:58.:58:59.

old-fashioned, gentlemanly thing to do.

:59:00.:59:04.

Cracking right hand from Njangiru. That was good because he went to the

:59:05.:59:07.

body first. Went to the body then brought the shot over the top,

:59:08.:59:13.

clever boxing from Njangiru. That was a bit south of the border.

:59:14.:59:17.

He looked at the referee, who said get on with it, and Tafari Ebanks

:59:18.:59:22.

decided not to be particularly gentlemanly and had a good flash at

:59:23.:59:24.

him. Coming to the end of this one, no

:59:25.:59:28.

doubt about the winner. Ebanks gives him a thump to say thank you very

:59:29.:59:32.

much for the experience, if nothing else. I am pretty sure that Benson

:59:33.:59:37.

Njangiru has got this one, it was a better third round for the youngster

:59:38.:59:40.

from became an island, Tafari Ebanks, but Njangiru from Kenya,

:59:41.:59:53.

where he is a policeman... I would not dispute a parking ticket

:59:54.:59:56.

with him, would you? No!

:59:57.:00:05.

Good boxing from temp one. That was the shot that was definitely low.

:00:06.:00:08.

Looking at the referee, he should have just boxed on, really, nearly

:00:09.:00:13.

got caught with the shot. He has won the contest, no doubt. Both these

:00:14.:00:27.

young men have been an absolute credit to the sport. The route to

:00:28.:00:36.

the semifinal, from Kenyan, Benson Njangiru. The last round went to

:00:37.:00:50.

Ebanks, but Benson Njangiru has won the contest. All three judges giving

:00:51.:00:58.

it to him. What a great bit of gymnastics! Maybe he is in the wrong

:00:59.:01:04.

arena! I haven't seen anybody do that in a boxing ring for a long

:01:05.:01:12.

time. Benson Njangiru, as silver medallist in Delhi. He has put on a

:01:13.:01:21.

Celtic top! That will endear him to have a Glasgow! -- half of Glasgow!

:01:22.:01:26.

Benson Njangiru playing to some of the home fans anyway. Head over

:01:27.:01:39.

heels is a good way of describing how happy he is with that! A very
