Good evening, we are nine hours into the opening day of the Commonwealth

:00:24.:00:29.

Games here in Glasgow, and it has been a golden day for England so

:00:30.:00:35.

far, three gold medal so far, two of them have come at Strathclyde part

:00:36.:00:42.

in the men's and women's triathlon and there has been another ad the

:00:43.:00:44.

Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome. That is where we are going very shortly. We

:00:45.:00:50.

have a plethora of champions both Olympic and Paralympic. In fact, if

:00:51.:00:55.

they all brought along they are hardware, the presentation podium

:00:56.:00:56.

would probably collapse because Jonathan Edwards is there alongside

:00:57.:00:58.

Dame Sarah Storey anther Chris Hoy himself. We have been enjoying the

:00:59.:01:03.

action from the fastest venue of these Commonwealth Games. Reaction

:01:04.:01:08.

first of all, Jonathan, to Sir Bradley Wiggins my fourth silver or

:01:09.:01:16.

of his career. We have not heard from him yet, hopefully we will

:01:17.:01:29.

speak to them soon, but I guess it is a step forward for the team, they

:01:30.:01:38.

struggled in the World Championships as a British team.

:01:39.:01:43.

They have got back on track with Bradley given them some leadership.

:01:44.:01:50.

Definitely, I think the important thing is to get a -- and get a medal

:01:51.:01:53.

and rebuild the team and look to the future.

:01:54.:01:54.

This is clearly a master plan for Sir Bradley.

:01:55.:01:56.

He is talking about going on to Rio and perhaps going for a fifth

:01:57.:01:57.

gold-medal now. I think that is right, he has his eyes on the total

:01:58.:01:59.

number of gold-medal scum of the record held by this man next to me

:02:00.:02:04.

he wants to go from seven to eight Olympic medals.

:02:05.:02:05.

He has not given up on the road just yet, he is focusing on Parry Ruby,

:02:06.:02:08.

as well. Yes, that is one of the iconic races in the cycling

:02:09.:02:11.

calendar, one that he would love to win.

:02:12.:02:17.

In the next couple of years that would be a massive target.

:02:18.:02:20.

Ladies and gentlemen, I know you are waiting for the men's team sprint, I

:02:21.:02:23.

will leave it with you. Thanks very much, Hazel, back to you

:02:24.:02:28.

soon, but it is the team sprint that features triple Olympic champion

:02:29.:02:33.

team Kent -- Jason Kenny. He struggled this morning, almost

:02:34.:02:38.

like a second chance saloon, wasn't it? Yes, he ended up against the

:02:39.:02:43.

fastest qualifiers would was always going to be tough.

:02:44.:02:46.

Unfortunately he was knocked out but he came back in and now he is up

:02:47.:02:52.

against it tomorrow. I think the English team are very happy to be in

:02:53.:02:56.

the final edit will be a big channel -- challenge. The New Zealand team

:02:57.:03:01.

exceptionally strong at the moment. Sarah, in terms of the team and what

:03:02.:03:04.

they have had to do, obviously Philip Hinds leads it now, and it is

:03:05.:03:14.

keeping it on the wheel of those two guys who are more experienced than

:03:15.:03:20.

him. Yes, we saw Kian this morning

:03:21.:03:25.

alluded to the back of Jason Kenny's deal. It is exactly the same

:03:26.:03:32.

things Kris Hughes to do. -- glued to the back. -- Sir Chris used to

:03:33.:03:38.

do. But we have seen the great British

:03:39.:03:43.

team raise their game? They did, a lot of criticism was levelled at

:03:44.:03:46.

them after the World Championships this year, disappointing not to make

:03:47.:03:51.

the last four but they should be proud of themselves.

:03:52.:03:53.

It was a great ground this morning, technically good, quick, everyone

:03:54.:03:57.

did their job, it was not just one superstar, it was at team effort.

:03:58.:04:02.

There is a big gap to the New Zealanders but anything can happen

:04:03.:04:05.

and I think they will prove a little bit. They may take a 10th author of

:04:06.:04:09.

that time. Let's go to Simon and Rob now, first

:04:10.:04:16.

of all it is the bronze medal race. We're looking at Canada, Hugo

:04:17.:04:20.

Barrette, the national champion. Joey the sprint record holder.

:04:21.:04:30.

-- Joey Vilas. They are up against Australia.

:04:31.:04:36.

Matthew plates are -- Matthew Glaetzer. Nathan Hart and Shane

:04:37.:04:39.

Perkins, and old campaigner in the Commonwealth Games over the years.

:04:40.:04:43.

He has been struggling with a back injury but has a chance of claiming

:04:44.:04:48.

a bronze medal. He was the winner of the sprint in Delhi four years ago.

:04:49.:04:56.

And away they go. Look at the power from those two as they get out of

:04:57.:05:03.

the blocks. The rider for Australia is Nathan Hart, Hugo Barrette for

:05:04.:05:09.

calendar -- Canada, who just launched himself out of the starting

:05:10.:05:12.

gate. A good opening lap by both squads,

:05:13.:05:16.

both teams qualifying well this morning. 44.027 for Australia, what

:05:17.:05:24.

could they do if Shane Perkins was at full fitness? That is the

:05:25.:05:30.

question. It is Matthew Glaetzer now for

:05:31.:05:31.

Australia. Australia leading the way It is Matthew Glaetzer now for

:05:32.:05:37.

here, and at the moment heading to the bronze medal. Glaetzer is a man

:05:38.:05:44.

in form. There becomes, 43.709 and they win by over one second, 1.3

:05:45.:05:49.

seconds clear of Canada, and a decisive claiming of the bronze

:05:50.:05:55.

medal by the Australian trio. That was quick, a good ride by the

:05:56.:05:59.

Australians. Having Shane Perkins slightly out of form, what could

:06:00.:06:06.

they do? What could they pull out? It is so critical it is such a short

:06:07.:06:12.

event over this distance that any small changes can have a dramatic

:06:13.:06:24.

effect on the outcome. There is the morbid -- the moment Perkins leads

:06:25.:06:29.

Glaetzer through. Australia had been in a winning

:06:30.:06:32.

position long before that, right from that opening lap from Nathan

:06:33.:06:35.

Hart. This final went to form perfectly

:06:36.:06:38.

for the Australians, don't think we were expecting any other outcome,

:06:39.:06:42.

they went out there and delivered their ride. What an absolute

:06:43.:06:48.

monster. We will see a lot more of Matthew

:06:49.:06:51.

Glaetzer, the 21-year-old, tomorrow, as we head into the latter stages of

:06:52.:06:56.

the match sprint. He is through to the quarterfinals and he was the

:06:57.:07:01.

fastest qualifier today. There will be some battle in the front end

:07:02.:07:04.

probably between the Australian riders and those from New Zealand,

:07:05.:07:09.

Jason Kenny getting through into the quarterfinals. There are the English

:07:10.:07:15.

trio, waiting for the final against New Zealand. Philip Hinds on the

:07:16.:07:21.

left-hand side, Kian Emadi in the centre, and the Olympic champion.

:07:22.:07:26.

Both of those are all in the champions in the team sprint. But

:07:27.:07:33.

they are up against a really good team here, the world champions.

:07:34.:07:37.

Eddie Dawkins, Ethan Mitchell and Sam Webster. These were the riders

:07:38.:07:41.

who claimed that the gold-medal back in February in Colombia.

:07:42.:07:47.

Half a second separates these two squads from qualification. 43.2 for

:07:48.:07:54.

New Zealand, 43.7 for the English squad. The English team here have

:07:55.:08:06.

got work to do. Off the back of their qualification from the

:08:07.:08:13.

individual sprint this morning with Hindes and Kenny, I was pleasantly

:08:14.:08:15.

surprised with their performance to get into this final. It has been a

:08:16.:08:23.

busy day for a lot of these sprinters. It is not just about

:08:24.:08:29.

qualification for the individual and team sprints, it is the warm-ups and

:08:30.:08:35.

the warm down, also, it compounds everything. The psychological

:08:36.:08:41.

effects that has on you, the stresses and strains.

:08:42.:08:51.

The 52nd countdown has started ahead of this gold medal race in the men's

:08:52.:08:59.

team sprint, the final race at the velodrome in the East End of

:09:00.:09:06.

Glasgow. That macro the 50 -- the 50 second countdown.

:09:07.:09:10.

Final adjustments made. We are almost ready to go. The race for

:09:11.:09:22.

gold, ten seconds away. We have a bit of a problem. Hindes

:09:23.:09:39.

in the starting gate, not quite sure what is going on, whether it is the

:09:40.:09:46.

bike or the gate itself. Late adjustments, it has to be

:09:47.:09:50.

millimetre perfect here. The bike held in the starters gate, there is

:09:51.:09:55.

clearly a slight issue here for Philip Hindes. He will let everyone

:09:56.:10:04.

else sought that out and retain his focus and not be distracted by what

:10:05.:10:07.

is going on around him. You have to be mentally strong than something

:10:08.:10:09.

like this happens, just concentrate on your own effort.

:10:10.:10:14.

Iain Dyer, the coach on the side of the track, obviously was not happy

:10:15.:10:20.

with the way that bike was set. They are just asking the commissaires to

:10:21.:10:26.

rejig it. It is so important the start, so if the bike is not held

:10:27.:10:32.

quite right, it is not solid on the back wheel, then when you launch

:10:33.:10:35.

yourself out, the bike can move underneath you and it can have an

:10:36.:10:39.

effect on that opening half lap. There is an incredible mode of power

:10:40.:10:42.

that goes through the bike, particularly as it leaves the

:10:43.:10:46.

starters gate. I certainly would not want to be a link in Philip

:10:47.:10:53.

Hindes's chain, that is for sure. Now we are ready to go. Philip

:10:54.:10:56.

Hindes on the opening lap for England. The final of the men's team

:10:57.:11:01.

sprint. World champions in black. England in

:11:02.:11:06.

the back straight in the red and white.

:11:07.:11:12.

And away they go. Philip Hindes the Olympic champion,

:11:13.:11:15.

leading off for England. At the front, Ethan Mitchell four New

:11:16.:11:18.

Zealand in leading off on their first lap.

:11:19.:11:23.

England slightly down by a 10th of a second. Good start by both squads.

:11:24.:11:30.

There is not much in it, less than a 10th of a second in this. This is a

:11:31.:11:33.

tremendous final. The world champions being put under pressure

:11:34.:11:36.

there as they come up towards the line again.

:11:37.:11:40.

England had just under three tenths of a second down, leading the way is

:11:41.:11:45.

Dawkins for the world champions, New Zealand. He is up against Kian

:11:46.:11:51.

Emadi. Into the finishing straight, towards the line, gold four New

:11:52.:11:55.

Zealand, 43.181, the Commonwealth Games and record has gone and it is

:11:56.:11:59.

called to the world champions from New Zealand and England settle for

:12:00.:12:10.

silver. -- it is gold. I think on paper that went to form

:12:11.:12:14.

but that was a great opening lap thereby Philip Hinds.

:12:15.:12:21.

Superb ride from the world champions, blisteringly fast, but

:12:22.:12:24.

they had to be because they were pushed by England, and put it

:12:25.:12:34.

together at another decent ride. But Eddie Dawkins, Ethan Mitchell

:12:35.:12:37.

and Sam Webster came into this competition as the trio to beat and

:12:38.:12:41.

in the end nobody could. It was left up to Kian Emadi in that

:12:42.:12:46.

third lap lead to try and bring England home. Just had a small

:12:47.:12:49.

deficit, a couple of attempts to try and bring back, unfortunately for

:12:50.:12:55.

him he did not have the legs. It was New Zealand who powered their way

:12:56.:12:59.

around these three laps. What can you say? When you get beaten by a

:13:00.:13:03.

squad like this, reigning world champions, yet again beating the

:13:04.:13:10.

Commonwealth record, you have to come up with an awful lot to have an

:13:11.:13:14.

answer for that and unfortunately the England squad were not quite up

:13:15.:13:15.

to it. It was a very, very close race after

:13:16.:13:20.

the first lap, then New Zealand has just started to pull away, and, it

:13:21.:13:27.

was they who claimed the gold, 43.181, a new Commonwealth record,

:13:28.:13:38.

43.706 for England. Gold four New Zealand, silver for

:13:39.:13:40.

England and the bronze claimed by Australia.

:13:41.:13:48.

STUDIO: The world champions take the medal and that was the result we

:13:49.:13:52.

expected, wasn't it? It was, but to be fair England were

:13:53.:13:56.

right in it. Philip had a fantastic first lap,

:13:57.:13:59.

around four hundredths of a second down. Then Webster came through the

:14:00.:14:03.

second lap. Jason does not seem to be quite at his best committee lost

:14:04.:14:09.

a couple of tenths and the momentum was lost, and Kian Emadi did the

:14:10.:14:13.

best he could. Still a great ride, 43.170. That is a fraction of a

:14:14.:14:17.

second quicker than the Aussies went.

:14:18.:14:22.

You wonder, Sarah, whether the British riders are turning a bit of

:14:23.:14:26.

a corner after four World Championships and no medals. Perhaps

:14:27.:14:28.

people watching at home were surprised because going back to the

:14:29.:14:32.

Olympics it was gold medals all the way for Britain, wasn't it? We will

:14:33.:14:38.

talk about that in a second but I think we have the New Zealand team

:14:39.:14:44.

now. The English team, sorry, they are with Jill.

:14:45.:14:46.

Well, Jason, a Commonwealth silver medal. I know you would prefer to be

:14:47.:14:50.

on the top step but given qualifying this morning in the individual

:14:51.:14:53.

sprint, that felt like a team with something to prove today.

:14:54.:15:01.

Yes, it did. Well, just to get a ride out, yeah. Not shown ourselves

:15:02.:15:06.

very well recently, it was a massive step today to get to the final.

:15:07.:15:11.

Looking back at this morning and that individual sprint qualifying,

:15:12.:15:15.

what does that say about your form having put down that marker today?

:15:16.:15:21.

I think so, the 200 is one event, obviously, but as we proved on the

:15:22.:15:25.

black line in the team sprint, were up there with the best of them.

:15:26.:15:31.

Although not great this morning, me particularly, feeling a bit better

:15:32.:15:35.

but we were all pretty average this morning. That is not the full story,

:15:36.:15:40.

you know, we are still going fairly well.

:15:41.:15:43.

It was a big step to get into that, everyone was predicting it would be

:15:44.:15:47.

an Australia- New Zealand final, but two great starts from you today.

:15:48.:15:52.

Yes, I am happy with my starts are really happy with that.

:15:53.:16:00.

Yes. I think you lost your train of thought, we will not get a chance to

:16:01.:16:03.

speak to Kian Emadi, you are being taken for your medal ceremony.

:16:04.:16:10.

There is, Philip was a little bit lost for words there! Yes, they were

:16:11.:16:14.

struggling to breathe. He obviously put a lot of effort

:16:15.:16:18.

into that last lap. I think they are pleased to be on the body and to

:16:19.:16:21.

beat Australia, I think everyone would be expecting a Kiwi -Aussie

:16:22.:16:26.

final, so they did very well today. Jill asked Jason and he agreed, this

:16:27.:16:32.

idea of them turning a corner, and it has been for the British men's

:16:33.:16:36.

track team that has been so dominant, then you retired and left

:16:37.:16:40.

a little bit of a void, and they have kind of lost their way little

:16:41.:16:43.

bit. They have in terms of results but

:16:44.:16:46.

that does not always tell you the bigger picture.

:16:47.:16:50.

That sounds like a politician! Well, the fractions are so small,

:16:51.:16:53.

little things can make a fortune go on your side or against you.

:16:54.:16:59.

Confidence, more men these things, and this could be the start of more

:17:00.:17:03.

confidence for the guys, getting belief back again and little

:17:04.:17:05.

fractions, little things that can weigh against you or afford you can

:17:06.:17:09.

dictate whether you get a medal or not.

:17:10.:17:15.

That confidence, it is a nod thing to say, because you would think you

:17:16.:17:18.

would come from the Olympic Games full of confidence, yet it has not

:17:19.:17:22.

quite been like that. Every personality from the games has

:17:23.:17:24.

a different schedule for a year, maybe, ie around half, depending,

:17:25.:17:29.

some riders retire and some others go and do other things.

:17:30.:17:33.

When you come back together it is finding out what have left from that

:17:34.:17:38.

amazing success and rebuilding it. We've talked about rebuilding a lot

:17:39.:17:41.

in the past two years respecting the track team, and hopefully those

:17:42.:17:44.

jigsaw puzzles are coming together. Fortune come -- as Chris says, it

:17:45.:17:49.

starts to come your way. The men's team pursuit as the return

:17:50.:17:55.

of Sir Bradley Wiggins. He will hope to get a gold medal to complete his

:17:56.:18:00.

set. He has another silver one. Now over to the medal ceremony.

:18:01.:18:09.

COMMENTATOR: In the end it was a final which went to form. New

:18:10.:18:16.

Zealand with a stunning raid in the race for bronze, catching Canada

:18:17.:18:20.

halfway through the race to bring it to a conclusion. Shane Archbold,

:18:21.:18:25.

Pieter Bulling, Dylan Kennett and Marc Ryan. Always there or

:18:26.:18:32.

thereabouts in the team pursuit, bronze-medallists in the World

:18:33.:18:35.

Championships earlier this year and it is the same colour here in

:18:36.:18:41.

Glasgow. Just under 14 seconds the advantage going into that ride for

:18:42.:18:48.

bronze. After early expected conclusion, just about making it to

:18:49.:18:52.

half distance before the New Zealanders overtook the Canadian

:18:53.:19:01.

quartet. Slightly different story in the ride off for gold and silver.

:19:02.:19:15.

Still cannot quite get onto the top step of the podium in the team

:19:16.:19:22.

pursuit. It has been bronze and silver in the last three

:19:23.:19:24.

Commonwealth Games now for New Zealand. Silver for England, our

:19:25.:19:34.

fourth silver of his career for Bradley Wiggins. Third time in the

:19:35.:19:39.

team pursuit, the other coming in the individual pursuit in

:19:40.:19:49.

Manchester. Steven Burke, part of the Olympic team pursuit winning

:19:50.:19:54.

team of 2-mac years ago, Andy Tennant the former world champion in

:19:55.:19:59.

this event as well, and Ed Clancy, a two-time and current Olympic

:20:00.:20:05.

champion who like Sir Bradley Wiggins is still to win a gold medal

:20:06.:20:08.

from the Commonwealth Games to complete the set. Not a lot missing

:20:09.:20:14.

from either of the metal cabinets, but gold in the Commonwealth is. --

:20:15.:20:27.

medal cabinets. I would offer to lender then mine, but they should

:20:28.:20:34.

earn it by right. Now we will move on to the winners. As England take

:20:35.:20:42.

the applause of the crowd. We are looking at a world-class World

:20:43.:20:45.

Championship winning quartet who are now the Commonwealth champions as

:20:46.:20:51.

well. Blisteringly fast, world-class, worthy winners. Jack

:20:52.:20:56.

Bobridge back into the team, the road rider, who won this event and

:20:57.:21:01.

the individual pursuit in Delhi 4-mac years ago. And with him Luke

:21:02.:21:13.

Davison, Alex Edmondson, third from the left, just 20 years old. World

:21:14.:21:18.

champion in the individual pursuit as well. And Glenn O'Shea. And you

:21:19.:21:24.

Commonwealth Games record-tying, 354 point 851 seconds.

:21:25.:21:30.

A fleeting moment during the final when Australia went down to three

:21:31.:21:35.

and you just wondered if they were going to come under pressure but it

:21:36.:21:42.

was not the case at all. It was a half distance, they went down to

:21:43.:21:46.

three and the third rider started to lose the wheel, they were down to

:21:47.:21:49.

two and a half men but they pulled it back and that is the sign of a

:21:50.:21:58.

true champion ride. AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL ANTHEM PLAYS.

:21:59.:22:39.

STUDIO: The Australian team pursuit team retain the Commonwealth title.

:22:40.:23:04.

The battle lines very much drawn for Brazil? Yes, you can see the

:23:05.:23:08.

disappointment on the faces they are in contrast to the men's team

:23:09.:23:12.

sprint, these guys were really hoping they could still a march over

:23:13.:23:18.

the Aussies. This ongoing rivalry is fantastic as a spectator, now I am

:23:19.:23:21.

out of it I can enjoy it, but when you are in it it is a tough

:23:22.:23:29.

challenge. Looking at the disappointment, do you think there

:23:30.:23:33.

was a slight element of an realism that Bradley Wiggins would drag them

:23:34.:23:37.

to a gold medal and pummelled the Australians into the ground? I think

:23:38.:23:43.

they were gaining confidence from having Bradley around. They did not

:23:44.:23:47.

necessarily know the former Australia would have. They will go

:23:48.:23:51.

away and be disappointed but there are positives they can take away

:23:52.:23:55.

from this. This is the start of the final countdown now towards Brazil.

:23:56.:24:03.

In terms of the leadership that Sir Bradley will bring, on the men's

:24:04.:24:08.

side you think perhaps the retirement of Chris, may have lacked

:24:09.:24:12.

leadership and maybe they will bring that? He is an inspiration when he

:24:13.:24:17.

walks into the room, winning the Tour de France, doing incredible

:24:18.:24:20.

things on the road and such a hastily with the track, so it goes

:24:21.:24:23.

without saying that when he walks into the velodrome it left everyone

:24:24.:24:35.

-- such a history. Should we call it a reverence on the podium, what have

:24:36.:24:43.

they given me? When he is on form, in terms of his mood he is one of

:24:44.:24:47.

the best guys to have in the team, he cracks jokes, he raises morale. I

:24:48.:24:53.

think if he can bring something back into the team aside from his iconic

:24:54.:24:59.

status it is his personality, this could be a really important thing

:25:00.:25:05.

for the team to have him back. We will head back to gel who has got

:25:06.:25:14.

the team pursuit team. I have, I know you like to be on the top step,

:25:15.:25:19.

but that was a very good Australian side, they went out very hard? Yes,

:25:20.:25:25.

it is easy to see this as a failure, of course we want to win,

:25:26.:25:30.

Commonwealth Games and all that and being Olympic champions. But

:25:31.:25:34.

compared to where we were in Colombia, the World Championships at

:25:35.:25:39.

the start of the year, it is a giant leap forward. It is not a black and

:25:40.:25:43.

white world, there are shades of grey. We can look at this as partial

:25:44.:25:48.

success. It is great having Brad back in the team and he has been a

:25:49.:25:53.

part of this, it is not just his horsepower but we are excited to

:25:54.:25:56.

have him back. Looking forward to the journey to Rio now. How have you

:25:57.:26:05.

enjoyed the experience? I have said this is like being on holiday, I

:26:06.:26:10.

have to go back to work on Monday morning. It has been a nice break

:26:11.:26:14.

from everything, from the road. It is a good starting point for us, for

:26:15.:26:20.

the next two years, you cannot win all the time, I think four weeks ago

:26:21.:26:26.

we sat in a room for the first time and we all said what do you think,

:26:27.:26:30.

we do you think we are at and what can we do in Glasgow? We all said

:26:31.:26:37.

about 57 if we trained hard, that is the reality, limited preparation. We

:26:38.:26:43.

will look back on this in two years hopefully with gold medals around

:26:44.:26:46.

are neck and see this was the starting point. There is that

:26:47.:26:50.

element of disappointment that you were unable to get the gold here,

:26:51.:26:55.

that drives you on, you personally are you committed towards Rio? Yes,

:26:56.:27:02.

I said all on the track is what I was going to go back to. The event

:27:03.:27:10.

has moved on so much. When I left the squad about six years ago this

:27:11.:27:14.

sort of times we were producing today, you would have won gold with

:27:15.:27:20.

those, apart from the Olympics. I think it is a starting point, I am

:27:21.:27:25.

not going to underestimate the event, it will take a lot and I need

:27:26.:27:29.

to put on muscle and get stronger so I can still do two and a half lap

:27:30.:27:35.

turns. It will be two years of graft now, it is so difficult to the road,

:27:36.:27:42.

I cannot underestimate how much work it will take. Congratulations.

:27:43.:27:47.

Stephen, back in the team, you left it all out on the track, giving

:27:48.:27:51.

qualifying this morning there did not seem to be a lot left to

:27:52.:27:57.

deliver? Yes, that is true, and it is an improvement on the World

:27:58.:27:59.

Championships saw things are on the up but we have got a lot of work to

:28:00.:28:06.

do and we know that for sure. I am confident we can improve and set the

:28:07.:28:13.

record straight in two years time. Tough transitions on this track as

:28:14.:28:18.

we saw in the World Cup, but a safe couple of rides and progress being

:28:19.:28:22.

made? Yes, I can only reiterate what they have been saying, start of the

:28:23.:28:26.

journey and I did not crash so that was nice for my self exclusion Mark

:28:27.:28:34.

disappointed not to get gold, the estuary is where a fantastic team,

:28:35.:28:42.

-- VS trillions were a fantastic team. -- the Australians where our

:28:43.:28:56.

fantastic team. Thank you. STUDIO: Bradley called it like being on

:28:57.:29:04.

holiday! He has said that before, because he is not training for seven

:29:05.:29:08.

hours a day he feels like he is not doing anything, but for the rest of

:29:09.:29:16.

us mere mortals it is still work. I am pleased to see the guys a bit

:29:17.:29:21.

more up than I expected. This is clearly a step forward from Colombia

:29:22.:29:25.

and the World Championships. They are realistic about how much work it

:29:26.:29:29.

will take and will not underestimate the challenge but it is a good

:29:30.:29:35.

start. Thank you for now, Bradley Wiggins has another Silver

:29:36.:29:38.

Commonwealth medal, and Scotland has its first with Hayley McGlynn.

:29:39.:29:48.

STUDIO: I am joined by Steve Cram, we have had an extraordinary sponsor

:29:49.:29:53.

from all of you today, thank you for your suggestions for the word of the

:29:54.:29:57.

day. We will shear one or two with you, the first suggestion is from

:29:58.:30:01.

Charles who points to the big yellow ball in the sky and suggests a word

:30:02.:30:14.

which means it is not raining. That is what we had at Strathclyde Park

:30:15.:30:36.

today for the triathlon. Also described as Taps Aff weather. That

:30:37.:30:38.

is when men take all their clothes off.

:30:39.:30:42.

The Geordies are not far off. You have all those told me it is always

:30:43.:30:44.

like this. Because of these temperatures Ross

:30:45.:30:48.

McGeachie Donald suggests at the very difficult conditions at

:30:49.:30:58.

Strathclyde Park, wabbit, meaning tired and a little wobbly. Alistair

:30:59.:31:02.

Brownlee and his brother, Jonny Brownlee, will be feeling wabbit

:31:03.:31:09.

after that race today. Keep them coming, and it is at Weegie word to

:31:10.:31:19.

send in more. Mo Farah has had to pull out because

:31:20.:31:22.

he has been suffering from an illness in the last few weeks. What

:31:23.:31:26.

is your reaction, first of all, to that news.

:31:27.:31:32.

To be fair, I was surprised this morning, years over the illness, per

:31:33.:31:37.

se, but it is obviously a race against time to get himself as fit

:31:38.:31:40.

as he would like to be. Unusually this time round, in 2012, normally

:31:41.:31:47.

the 10,000 is first, the 5000 can be a bonus. Here, the 5000 is on

:31:48.:31:52.

Sunday. Last weekend the noise is where he would not be here for the

:31:53.:31:57.

5000, not quite ready, but we were hoping and expecting he would be

:31:58.:32:00.

here for the 10,000 at the end of the week. That is a bit of a

:32:01.:32:06.

surprise. He has obviously made that decision based on him being Mo

:32:07.:32:10.

Farah, he wants to win. The Commonwealth Games on the track is

:32:11.:32:14.

tough, particularly in the distance events. The Kenyans are very strong

:32:15.:32:18.

in particular and he knew that if he was a little bit of then, you know,

:32:19.:32:23.

he does not want to come here and get beat, obviously. It is a

:32:24.:32:27.

disappointment for the games, for all the people that have wanted to

:32:28.:32:30.

come and see him and all the other big names, as well. I hope it is a

:32:31.:32:36.

disappointment for him, as well. The Commonwealth Games is an important

:32:37.:32:39.

event. I know he said he was training for the Europeans, but

:32:40.:32:42.

there are not many British athletes who have won Olympic, world,

:32:43.:32:47.

European and Commonwealth titles. He would have joined a very select club

:32:48.:32:51.

and I do not think that chance will come again.

:32:52.:32:54.

It would be triple, double, in effect.

:32:55.:32:58.

Absolutely. I know sometimes people say it is a real world-class event.

:32:59.:33:06.

It is. In track and field, it is. It has great history. Lots of our top

:33:07.:33:12.

distance theory from -- heroes from history have done it. I hope he is

:33:13.:33:15.

disappointed. From a UK Athletics standpoint is it

:33:16.:33:20.

more important to them that he competes at the Europeans in Z?rich

:33:21.:33:28.

pressure Mark that is a good question.

:33:29.:33:35.

-- insulated? -- in this unit? Winning championships is what the

:33:36.:33:38.

funding programmes are about and obviously there is an emphasis on

:33:39.:33:45.

getting athletes prepared for the championships and the European

:33:46.:33:47.

Championships slots into that, as well. It is always difficult when we

:33:48.:33:50.

have the Commonwealth Games in the UK. We had it in 1986, then we had

:33:51.:33:56.

to go to Stuttgart ten days later for the European Championships.

:33:57.:34:00.

Everyone had the same in Manchester, straight to Munich straight after.

:34:01.:34:04.

It is difficult to get the balance right, but plenty have done it,

:34:05.:34:08.

Paula Radcliffe did that in 2002. Then we come back to Mo Farah's

:34:09.:34:12.

scenario, combine that with the move up to the marathon at the same time.

:34:13.:34:20.

More as had his problems. -- he has had his problems. It is a decision

:34:21.:34:24.

he has taken, they have left it as late as they could and I am pretty

:34:25.:34:28.

sure we will see him hopefully racing well in Z?rich. Obviously the

:34:29.:34:32.

Commonwealth Games organisers are disappointed but there are some

:34:33.:34:36.

wonderful stars remaining. Katarina Johnson-Thompson has had to

:34:37.:34:39.

pull out because of injury, as well, but intent of the star names left

:34:40.:34:44.

who are you most looking forward to seeing? -- in terms.

:34:45.:34:49.

There are some genuine, really top-class world stars here, probably

:34:50.:34:53.

the men's 800 metres is the big one for me. In 2012, David Rudisha at

:34:54.:34:58.

the height of his career and I don't know if everyone saw that wonderful

:34:59.:35:02.

documentary on BBC Four the other night, he comes here having had a

:35:03.:35:08.

year out, he has in getting better incremental way, he is not the 2012

:35:09.:35:13.

David Rudisha and the young man who finished second to him in 2012, all

:35:14.:35:19.

of those national records where -- were beaten. The almost beat him

:35:20.:35:25.

last weekend. He did carry the flag last night,

:35:26.:35:31.

and he is a massive talent. I think the two of them for the next two or

:35:32.:35:36.

three years can dominate that event. These are the two best in the world

:35:37.:35:40.

at the moment. In the 400 metres, as well.

:35:41.:35:46.

There is lots to look forward to come it all starts on Sunday.

:35:47.:35:51.

We are going to head right across to the SECC, because it is time for the

:35:52.:35:56.

Jude Law now. We have five finals and we have home nations

:35:57.:35:59.

representation in everyone of them. Timber Lee Rennick 's Scotland is

:36:00.:36:04.

younger of two sisters. Her older sister, Louise come is also thanking

:36:05.:36:08.

tonight. Camberley is in the 48 kilograms, the light of the

:36:09.:36:14.

weights, she is up against an Indian born it and trying to win

:36:15.:36:16.

Scotland's first gold of these games.

:36:17.:36:30.

Aside this place is going to erupt. Look at that face! She is there a!

:36:31.:36:42.

She is in it to win it. Not taking the pressure of her home crowd,

:36:43.:36:47.

using that energy around the stadium. It is absolutely spiralling

:36:48.:36:52.

right over her head. Well, Kimberley Renicks, I think, it is safe to say,

:36:53.:36:57.

has really got her work cut out there. Her opponent has been an

:36:58.:37:01.

absolutely unbelievable form all day. Every scar she has done has

:37:02.:37:13.

been ippon. Kimberley Renicks really has to play the tactics here.

:37:14.:37:20.

Kimberley Renicks is representing Scotland in blue, or opponent is

:37:21.:37:28.

invite. You can just see blue and white flags everywhere. Lots of

:37:29.:37:35.

Scottish finalists in this tournament this evening in this

:37:36.:37:45.

stadium. My goodness me, we can hardly see you -- hardly hear

:37:46.:37:55.

ourselves commented. I have heard from various sources that Likmabam

:37:56.:38:01.

is absolutely a firestarter. She will be looking for the big

:38:02.:38:03.

technique. There it is! She is trying to back

:38:04.:38:09.

her up. She has to be careful of that because she will disappear

:38:10.:38:12.

underneath her if she is not careful. That is what she wants, you

:38:13.:38:25.

can see it setting up every time. Renicks is a fighter!

:38:26.:38:29.

Welcome action, reaction, she will get a penalty straight off the bat,

:38:30.:38:35.

Likmabam. Likmabam gets the penalty, but Renicks, if that is a, has just

:38:36.:38:40.

got to be a little bit careful. Likmabam, second penalty coming.

:38:41.:38:59.

That is the tactic then. That is not the way she wants to

:39:00.:39:02.

win, she wants to be a crowd pleaser, she wants the big boom.

:39:03.:39:13.

Well, she once the ippon. -- she doesn't want the ippon.

:39:14.:39:23.

The crowd are absolutely on top of this match, what an atmosphere. You

:39:24.:39:30.

could cut it with a knife. Likmabam has to change her tactics.

:39:31.:39:34.

I think one of the problems is she has probably had it a little too

:39:35.:39:38.

easy through the day. It is not going as planned.

:39:39.:39:41.

She has done it! Renicks does it. Renicks on the edge

:39:42.:39:52.

and ippon goes over. Standing ovation from the crowd,

:39:53.:39:56.

they have their first gold medal in Scotland. She took her apart piece

:39:57.:40:05.

by piece, fantastic. Her tactics there were absolutely

:40:06.:40:09.

superb, because that was the way to do it. She closed her down, never

:40:10.:40:14.

gave her a target, and she just put her under pressure. Likmabam will

:40:15.:40:18.

feel more butter. I am almost sure of it, because really her tactics

:40:19.:40:21.

were very poor coming into that match. Technically probably better,

:40:22.:40:25.

but tactically absolutely miles away. Kimberley Renicks was superb.

:40:26.:40:33.

She did everything right and that is the first gold medal. Like you said,

:40:34.:40:37.

standing ovation for Renicks. Here it is on the H, look at that,

:40:38.:40:48.

drivers are backwards. That Sir cleanly onto the back. Beautiful

:40:49.:40:52.

ippon there. Kimberley Renicks... Well, can they do the double? Her

:40:53.:40:58.

and her sister? That is the double. Kimberley Renicks wins the gold

:40:59.:41:03.

medal for Scotland. She is the under 48 kilos Commonwealth Games gold

:41:04.:41:12.

medallist. Kimberley Renicks, Commonwealth

:41:13.:41:15.

champion, how does that sound? It is absolutely great, I am so happy.

:41:16.:41:20.

I was the first one to go out there and I wanted to get the team off to

:41:21.:41:24.

a great start. Not only a first on the mat here, but also Scotland's

:41:25.:41:28.

first gold medal. It is a great achievement to get

:41:29.:41:32.

that first gold, unbelievable. Of course you have to go and cheered

:41:33.:41:36.

on your sister. Yes, hopefully she can do the same and we can make it a

:41:37.:41:39.

sister double. How did it feel to be on the mat in

:41:40.:41:42.

front of such a great crowd supporting you?

:41:43.:41:46.

The crowds are phenomenal, they are so good. The minute they cheer you

:41:47.:41:49.

on it gives you that list, you want to do it better for them.

:41:50.:41:55.

Did nerves come into play pressure might my stomach has been sick all

:41:56.:41:58.

day, but when the crowd cheers you it makes you go, I can do this.

:41:59.:42:03.

What does it mean to you to be standing at the top of the potty

:42:04.:42:05.

with the Scottish flag? It will be great, it will be

:42:06.:42:08.

wonderful. Many congratulations, done.

:42:09.:42:13.

Yes, 26-year-old Kimberley Renicks gets the host nation off and running

:42:14.:42:17.

with first gold medal the game. She is from the Coatbridge area and is

:42:18.:42:21.

coached by her dad Thomas and her older sister will be going for gold,

:42:22.:42:25.

as welcome in a short. We will keep you up-to-date with what is going on

:42:26.:42:30.

in the ECC -- SECC. Timber lead's compatriot, John

:42:31.:42:35.

Buchanan come is going for bronze here.

:42:36.:42:39.

John Buchanan, halfway through the contest, still in there, still

:42:40.:42:42.

looking fresh. Needs to move it. That was very close. John Buchanan

:42:43.:43:15.

this time on the edge. They are both looking for the Yoko

:43:16.:43:18.

Sutemi Waza, I would like to see them with a little bit more moment.

:43:19.:43:20.

A little bit more positive... There it is!

:43:21.:43:27.

He has got the ippon. I don't think that was ippon. I am going to make a

:43:28.:43:30.

call, I think them video referee may overrule that. I think it was!

:43:31.:43:38.

It would be a very brave decision. It is continuing!

:43:39.:43:46.

The referee again called the flight, did not call the landing. John

:43:47.:43:57.

Buchanan has been given Waza Ari for sure on that.

:43:58.:44:01.

That is the problem, it looks dynamic flying through the air, but

:44:02.:44:07.

you how to score the landing. We are back! Everyone is back up standing.

:44:08.:44:12.

John Buchanan! 38 years old.

:44:13.:44:22.

38 years old, John Buchanan. Not only is he a star, but he is a

:44:23.:44:30.

38-year-old star. Fantastic stuff. Careful!

:44:31.:44:38.

There it is! And backward somersault before his barrel of. Your class.

:44:39.:44:42.

That probably should have happened after the barrel, but never mind. --

:44:43.:44:50.

after the bow. Let's have a look, John Buchanan.

:44:51.:45:02.

You have to land with both points of the shoulder on the deck. It does

:45:03.:45:07.

not matter, John Buchanan has been given ippon. He is the bronze

:45:08.:45:10.

medallist here at the Commonwealth Games in under 60 kilograms, and of

:45:11.:45:16.

the crowd absolutely love it. They love our hero, John Buchanan is a

:45:17.:45:20.

hero. He did not want to go home

:45:21.:45:24.

empty-handed. He certainly did not.

:45:25.:45:27.

What a profitable half-hour for Scotland. In the SECC in the

:45:28.:45:31.

medals, they keep coming. Many will hope that will continue to be the

:45:32.:45:35.

case this evening when we go to Tollcross for the swimming. We have

:45:36.:45:39.

five finals there this evening and they will start just after 7pm. In

:45:40.:45:43.

the first of those finals will be Scotland's Hannah Miley, the

:45:44.:45:47.

defending 400 metres individual medley champion. She broke her own

:45:48.:45:51.

Commonwealth record this morning and looks very good indeed.

:45:52.:45:52.

Will she be smiley Hannah Miley? I have got to remind myself that it

:45:53.:46:07.

is just another swimming competition, I am there to enjoy it,

:46:08.:46:11.

I have done all the hard work and training I just have to go in and

:46:12.:46:14.

race the race that I have done hundreds of thousands of times

:46:15.:46:18.

before, it just is that there will be a few more people watching!

:46:19.:46:26.

Having more than just more than one swimmer on day one who has medal

:46:27.:46:29.

potential is quite nice, pressure will only get to you if you let it,

:46:30.:46:33.

so we have to make sure we stay strong and are not affected by it.

:46:34.:46:41.

Hannah Miley coming through now. Up to about fourth position. The lead

:46:42.:46:47.

is quite clear. Experiencing London set me up quite well because that

:46:48.:46:55.

was a huge amount of pressure, Mark Cavendish does not get the gold

:46:56.:46:58.

medal so we are all looking at you. It was very strange. Hannah Miley

:46:59.:47:07.

finishes in fifth position. As disappointing as it was I think it

:47:08.:47:10.

was a positive thing for me because it allowed me to sit back and

:47:11.:47:19.

reflect, getting into the final, one of the hardest events to make the

:47:20.:47:29.

final four. My dad 's passion and love for swimming goes way back

:47:30.:47:34.

before I was born. His passion is what has driven myself and my

:47:35.:47:38.

younger brothers to be part of the sport and taken it to where it is. I

:47:39.:47:42.

don't think he ever expected us to get to the level that we are at. He

:47:43.:47:47.

has always coached me and for me I have a huge amount of respect for

:47:48.:47:52.

him. He just has such a huge passion for it, you cannot help but feel

:47:53.:47:56.

drawn to it just because of the vast knowledge that he has. It is a

:47:57.:48:02.

strange environment, a lot of people probably don't understand it but for

:48:03.:48:05.

us it is how we work and how we run and I would not have it any other

:48:06.:48:11.

way. I have made a lot of changes to both my diet and my regime.

:48:12.:48:18.

Physically I do feel a lot better. It is kind of all starting to fall

:48:19.:48:23.

into place. It is just a matter of maintaining it, keeping up the

:48:24.:48:27.

training and hard work. It will be a good race. I know my competitors are

:48:28.:48:32.

very strong at the moment. They have put in a lot of hard work as well,

:48:33.:48:36.

but I know that the hard work I have put in has just been as tough and

:48:37.:48:40.

consistent and solid so it is a matter of making sure I produce the

:48:41.:48:44.

result I know that I can do on the day. Hopefully the guys will get

:48:45.:48:50.

excited, get behind the Scottish swimmers and support them. Good luck

:48:51.:48:54.

to Hannah Miley, she is off at seven minutes past seven this evening.

:48:55.:49:03.

There is great news again from the SEC see because there is news of a

:49:04.:49:09.

fourth gold medal for England, Ashley McKenzie in the 60 kilograms

:49:10.:49:19.

category in the judo. If you would like to see the remaining judo

:49:20.:49:26.

finals they are live on BBC Three. Wonderful news for him and England,

:49:27.:49:29.

a fourth gold medal for England today. We are going to Tollcross

:49:30.:49:36.

Park, it is about a mile and a half from here, Clare Balding is there

:49:37.:49:44.

width Becky Adlington and Mark Foster. It is hot everywhere and I

:49:45.:49:52.

guess it is extra hot inside the? It is quite warm, I cannot lie. The

:49:53.:49:58.

noise will be incredible, it is a very low roof which condenses the

:49:59.:50:04.

sound and builds it up. Huge chances for Scotland tonight, alongside me

:50:05.:50:09.

are double Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington and the wonderful Mark

:50:10.:50:14.

Foster, unfortunately we did not consult before we dressed so

:50:15.:50:17.

consequently we look a little similar. How big danger is Aimee

:50:18.:50:27.

Willmott to Hannah Miley? I think she is definitely a danger, I think

:50:28.:50:32.

she might get the goal tonight. She is so in control. And she has got

:50:33.:50:37.

the extra gear, she can turn it up a speed which Hannah does not quite

:50:38.:50:43.

have the same level to turn on and off, but I think it will definitely

:50:44.:50:47.

be then head to head. They have both got different strengths. Hannah is a

:50:48.:50:53.

bit weak on the butterfly winners Aimee Willmott is very strong. She

:50:54.:51:01.

will start strong and it is about if Hannah Miley can hang with her and

:51:02.:51:07.

come back? We have watched Hannah in the breaststroke and she seems to

:51:08.:51:11.

come towards the end but I think Aimee Willmott has just as strong a

:51:12.:51:15.

breaststroke so I think it will be down to the wire, but I think Aimee

:51:16.:51:18.

Willmott is on the up at the moment. Hannah is consistent, she

:51:19.:51:24.

will perform, but it is whether she has got enough tonight and I think

:51:25.:51:27.

Aimee Willmott is still improving and will edge it. Do you think the

:51:28.:51:34.

Scottish swimmers, this is the thing they have been training for, this is

:51:35.:51:38.

what they are keyed up for, this is the main event in their heads, ever?

:51:39.:51:46.

Yes, this is the major meat. Yes they have Europeans after it but

:51:47.:51:50.

this is what they have been focusing on this year, especially for the

:51:51.:51:55.

Scottish guys, it means so much, you can hear the noise already. That

:51:56.:51:59.

will push them on the last 25 metres. What is your feeling about

:52:00.:52:08.

Michael Jamieson, he is the poster boy for the Scottish team and he

:52:09.:52:12.

says he has lived for this pressure? He does have the pressure and I

:52:13.:52:16.

don't think what has anything to lose, after this morning Ross is in

:52:17.:52:24.

the spotlight, it is one thing being in the spotlight. If Michael

:52:25.:52:30.

Jamieson is on form Murdoch knows he has got a tough race on his hand.

:52:31.:52:38.

Michael Jamieson did not need to react to it, but I thought he would

:52:39.:52:43.

have shown more this morning. Michael looked to come up very quick

:52:44.:52:47.

from his stroke. I know nothing, but tell me what to think. You are

:52:48.:52:54.

correct, the first 50 metres Michael looked like he was trying too hard.

:52:55.:53:01.

Normally he looks at ease. The first race you have to blow away the

:53:02.:53:08.

cobwebs. This giddy thing is that when Sharron Davies interviewed Ross

:53:09.:53:14.

afterwards Ross said it was a comfortable heat and that was the

:53:15.:53:19.

scary moment for me, what more does Ross have to give tonight? The

:53:20.:53:26.

interesting thing will be, Ross will go back to the Olympic Village, did

:53:27.:53:32.

he sleep and relax? Commonwealth Village. Commonwealth Village. But

:53:33.:53:40.

he has never been in that position before. That will be interesting,

:53:41.:53:48.

did he relax, was he nervous this afternoon? I don't know him that

:53:49.:53:52.

well but it has a lot to play this evening. What do they do, would you

:53:53.:53:59.

sleep between the sheets and the finals? Every single athlete is

:54:00.:54:07.

different. They have to go and do the drugs tests, it seems like quite

:54:08.:54:11.

a long process, but hopefully they have managed to get back, it is

:54:12.:54:15.

about refuelling, making sure you are eating enough, that you have got

:54:16.:54:24.

everything that you need. I always tell every athlete to have a really

:54:25.:54:28.

good docs set of DVDs because you need to switch off and relax. It is

:54:29.:54:39.

about what is good for you. I never used to sleep but other guys always

:54:40.:54:51.

did. I did one session a day. What did we learn about the swimming pool

:54:52.:54:55.

this morning? I know it sounds odd to say this, is it fast? I

:54:56.:55:02.

definitely thought that it was. Especially for the women's 400-metre

:55:03.:55:06.

medley this morning there were only two Mac heats, there were a number

:55:07.:55:13.

of Commonwealth Games records gone, quite a number of personal bests.

:55:14.:55:21.

Five second drops, three seconds drops all over the place from people

:55:22.:55:30.

's personal best times. They know the pool now, they feel at ease at

:55:31.:55:38.

it. We have got a hugely exciting evening of swimming coming up, gold

:55:39.:55:43.

medals to be awarded, it gets underway just after seven o'clock,

:55:44.:55:48.

Hannah Miley will be in the pool up against Aimee Willmott for the

:55:49.:55:52.

400-metre individual medley. STUDIO: Thank you, before we go because we

:55:53.:55:59.

are approaching 7pm we will remind you of the chief headlines. It is

:56:00.:56:08.

Kimberley Renicks who has won Scotland's first gold-medal of the

:56:09.:56:14.

games after victory in the under 48 kilograms judo finals. The first

:56:15.:56:20.

gold of Glasgow 's games went to England in the women's triathlon,

:56:21.:56:24.

victory for Jodie Stimpson and a hard-fought bronze for team-mate

:56:25.:56:29.

Vicky Holland. Alistair Brownlee has added the Commonwealth title to his

:56:30.:56:33.

Olympic crown in the men's triathlon, with his younger brother

:56:34.:56:39.

Johnny taking silver. Sir Bradley Wiggins missed out on his first

:56:40.:56:44.

Commonwealth gold medal as England came second in the team final

:56:45.:56:49.

pursuit with Australia taking the honours in that one. Our fourth

:56:50.:56:55.

silver medal of but he says that is a start for him because he is going

:56:56.:56:59.

to go for real on the track in a couple of years time. Four goals for

:57:00.:57:07.

England, one for Scotland so far, -- golds. This son is smiling on as

:57:08.:57:17.

here as we look across the River Clyde. The big question tonight,

:57:18.:57:22.

we'll Michael Jamieson, Scotland's golden boy, deliver in the pool?

:57:23.:57:27.

Join Gary and Clare Balding and the rest of the team very shortly. For

:57:28.:57:34.

now, goodbye. Glasgow, this city is my hometown and this is our home

:57:35.:57:39.

games. To compete here will be the realisation of a lifelong goal. I

:57:40.:57:45.

was a child who was cleared of water yet here in Glasgow I decided I

:57:46.:57:51.

wanted to become an Olympian. -- was scared of water. But it is about

:57:52.:57:55.

more than gold, it is about striving for your absolute best. And here it

:57:56.:58:01.

home that is what I will do.

:58:02.:58:04.
