Cotter. ANDREW COTTER: The three great | :00:09. | :00:14.
football stadiums of Glasgow have been commandeered to play parts, | :00:15. | :00:19.
including Celtic Park for the opening ceremony. Ibrox Malcolm did | :00:20. | :00:27.
how many people? 170,000 people. Hampden Park roared again and again. | :00:28. | :00:44.
Thankfully, it is staying dry. And Hampden Park is counting down to the | :00:45. | :00:50.
start of this closing ceremony. HAZEL IRVINE: And as promised, it is | :00:51. | :00:56.
time for a party! Thank you very much. Good evening, | :00:57. | :01:03.
good afternoon, good morning, and welcome to Glasgow for the final | :01:04. | :01:08.
time. Can you believe it has been 11 days since we started the party | :01:09. | :01:13.
right here, in 11 days since a bunch of athletes walked onto the stage? | :01:14. | :01:20.
11 days since we raised millions for Unicef's special Commonwealth Games | :01:21. | :01:26.
Fund, helping kids around the Commonwealth? And here we are, the | :01:27. | :01:33.
difficult bit, where we have got to say cheerio. And how do we do that? | :01:34. | :01:37.
By having the biggest party in Scotland's history. Let me hear the | :01:38. | :01:45.
Hampden Park roar, and the Commonwealth shout, for lulu! | :01:46. | :01:54.
Isn't it great to be here tonight, everybody? Tonight is all about | :01:55. | :02:14.
saying thank you, so I think we need some really important people to come | :02:15. | :02:17.
down here and get this party started. Welcome, the athletes from | :02:18. | :03:09.
# I said I want you to know right now | :03:10. | :03:42.
# Take it easy, take it easy Take it easy | :03:43. | :04:16.
# Take it easy, take it easy Take it easy | :04:17. | :04:39.
ANDREW COTTER: Lulu gets us going. And the athletes get to show | :04:40. | :05:53.
themselves. HAZEL IRVINE: You know, that song | :05:54. | :05:59.
was a hit for Lulu 50 years ago! That cannot be right, surely?! | :06:00. | :06:04.
Meanwhile, say hello to Ricky Ross and Deacon Blue. | :06:05. | :06:14.
We are going to do some singing tonight! OK. | :06:15. | :06:22.
# There's a man I meet Walks up our street | :06:23. | :06:24.
# He's a worker for the council Has been 20 years | :06:25. | :06:27.
# And he takes no lip off nobody And litter off the gutter | :06:28. | :06:30.
# Puts it in a bag and never thinks to mutter | :06:31. | :06:35.
# And he packs his lunch in a Sunblest bag | :06:36. | :06:37.
# He never lets on But I know cos he once told me | :06:38. | :06:43.
# He let me know a secret about the money in his kitty | :06:44. | :06:47.
He's gonna buy a dinghy Gonna call her Dignity | :06:48. | :07:01.
# And I'll sail her up the west coast | :07:02. | :07:07.
# I'll be on my holidays They'll be doing their rounds | :07:08. | :07:11.
# They'll ask me how I got her I'll say, "I saved my money" | :07:12. | :07:14.
# They'll say, "Isn't she pretty That ship called Dignity?" | :07:15. | :07:34.
We are thanking the workers of the city of Glasgow here. 220 of them, | :07:35. | :07:39.
representing the various different departments. | :07:40. | :07:41.
# And I'm telling this story in a faraway scene | :07:42. | :07:45.
# Sipping down raki and reading Maynard Keynes | :07:46. | :07:47.
# And I'm thinking about home and all that that means | :07:48. | :07:51.
# And a place in the winter for Dignity | :07:52. | :08:04.
# And I'll sail her up the west coast | :08:05. | :08:07.
# I'll be on my holidays They'll be doing their rounds | :08:08. | :08:14.
# They'll ask me how I got her I'll say, "I saved my money" | :08:15. | :08:18.
# They'll say, "Isn't she pretty That ship called Dignity?" | :08:19. | :08:50.
# Set it up, set it up, set it up Set it up, set it up, set it up | :08:51. | :09:00.
# Yeah, set it up again Set it up again | :09:01. | :09:02.
# And I'm thinking how good it would be | :09:03. | :09:38.
Thanks to the workers of the city. A fitting song from Deacon Blue. Now, | :09:39. | :10:20.
it is time for the volunteers, the Clyde-siders, to have their moment | :10:21. | :10:27.
inside Hampden Park. More than 50,000 of them applied to help. Only | :10:28. | :10:33.
15,000 were required. It was a record for those who put their hand | :10:34. | :10:46.
out and stepped forward. We are incredibly proud to be here. We | :10:47. | :10:51.
would love for you all to join us to show massive appreciation to all of | :10:52. | :10:53.
the Clyde-sider volunteers! # I wanna show myself | :10:54. | :11:26.
into whatever I choose # I want to know that this | :11:27. | :11:35.
is really biting at my heel # I want to dream it | :11:36. | :11:47.
and it to be true # I want to be the one | :11:48. | :12:26.
they say, "Hey, he's coming too" # We'll live here | :12:27. | :12:29.
I promise you on any more # So say it, say it | :12:30. | :12:38.
Say you'll be my Messiah # So say it, say it | :12:39. | :13:52.
Say you'll be my Messiah. # 15,000 volunteers, to help the Games | :13:53. | :15:01.
run so smoothly. More than Melbourne and Manchester combined! Indeed, and | :15:02. | :15:08.
these Clyde-siders, their enthusiasm was undimmed in sunshine or | :15:09. | :15:12.
torrential downpours of the last couple of days! That was close to an | :15:13. | :15:21.
Olympian scale. The Gold Coast coming up, of course, in Queensland. | :15:22. | :15:26.
And then who might be the host in 2022? That will be announced next | :15:27. | :15:31.
year, and it could be Durban, in South Africa, Edmonton in Canada, | :15:32. | :15:36.
previous host, and Cardiff might be considering a bid. So, all of these | :15:37. | :15:42.
cities will be watching. People have spoken very highly of the Glasgow | :15:43. | :15:45.
Commonwealth Games, but again, the standard has been set. And the | :15:46. | :15:54.
festival spirit continues, because we have got not one, but two | :15:55. | :15:58.
stages. It is not Glastonbury, quite. And for all these athletes, | :15:59. | :16:14.
of course, a chance to relax. For some the competition ended a few | :16:15. | :16:17.
days ago but they have had a chance to hang around. Some have decided | :16:18. | :16:22.
just about five hours ago to come back up and enjoy the party. | :16:23. | :16:38.
Now, it has all been about the Glasgow Games, but shortly we will | :16:39. | :16:46.
welcome a bit of the Edinburgh Festival, a Military Tattoo to join | :16:47. | :16:52.
us now. Yes, the big events keep coming in | :16:53. | :17:15.
Scotland. The Edinburgh Festival got under way and the festival fringe as | :17:16. | :17:20.
well. The capital is buzzing and if you had to the castle, the Military | :17:21. | :17:29.
Tattoo is a fantastic experience. Genuinely staring stuff. They will | :17:30. | :17:43.
be leading the Commonwealth. Represented by the Dragoon guards, | :17:44. | :17:49.
the Royal Dragoon Guards, the Royal Scots and the Highland Fusiliers. | :17:50. | :17:54.
The highlanders, the Australian Federal police pipe drums, the | :17:55. | :17:58.
Tasmanian police pipe band 's, and the Scots guard Association of | :17:59. | :18:00.
Manchester. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | :18:01. | :18:57.
Please welcome Prince Imran and Lord Smith of Kelvin, chairman of the | :18:58. | :18:58.
Organising Committee. Your Royal Highnesses, distinguished | :18:59. | :19:29.
guests, athletes and officials, Tonight, our hearts | :19:30. | :19:34.
are filled with pride. Tonight, | :19:35. | :19:47.
we are a Commonwealth connected. It brings us together | :19:48. | :19:53.
as athletes, as fans and as friends. Sport transcends language, | :19:54. | :20:14.
nationality and politics. No matter who you are | :20:15. | :20:21.
or where you are, sport has the power to make you feel | :20:22. | :20:25.
part of something bigger. That is something we've witnessed | :20:26. | :20:32.
here in Scotland Glasgow is my home. | :20:33. | :20:47.
It is a city that dares to dream. It's a city defined by its people | :20:48. | :21:09.
and we look out for each other. We've welcomed the world | :21:10. | :21:19.
to our dear green place and it has been an experience | :21:20. | :21:28.
we will never forget. Thank you, Glasgow! | :21:29. | :21:48.
CHEERING AND APPLAUSE And thank you Scotland! | :21:49. | :21:59.
At its heart, the Games is a sporting competition | :22:00. | :22:03.
and we have witnessed Commonwealth athletes giving it their all. | :22:04. | :22:06.
They have broken records, they have reached new heights | :22:07. | :22:09.
in moments of courage, determination and triumph. | :22:10. | :22:18.
From the moment we put out the call asking for your help, | :22:19. | :22:57.
you stepped forward in your thousands. | :22:58. | :23:01.
Our volunteers have been the lifeblood of the Games | :23:02. | :23:12.
we have laughed and we have cried together. | :23:13. | :23:28.
We have cheered until our throats were hoarse. | :23:29. | :23:37.
We asked you to bring it on and you delivered. | :23:38. | :23:42.
Hosting a Commonwealth Games is no mean feat. | :23:43. | :23:54.
It requires a huge team effort, and, right from the start, | :23:55. | :23:58.
we have worked in close partnership with the Scottish Government, | :23:59. | :24:02.
Glasgow City Council and Commonwealth Games Scotland | :24:03. | :24:06.
Already, that legacy can be seen all around us. | :24:07. | :24:19.
Soon, we will hand over to Gold Coast 2018, | :24:20. | :24:35.
I would like to wish them every success. | :24:36. | :24:42.
Our dreams and ambitions are now yours. | :24:43. | :24:46.
This city's connections with the Commonwealth are centuries old | :24:47. | :25:08.
They tell a story of industry and enterprise on a global scale. | :25:09. | :25:15.
that Glasgow's Commonwealth connections are strengthened | :25:16. | :25:21.
through a shared pride and passion for sport. | :25:22. | :25:26.
But, you know, this is just the beginning. | :25:27. | :25:35.
but Glasgow will never forget the Commonwealth Games. | :25:36. | :25:52.
Already it is a proud part of our history. History that belongs to | :25:53. | :26:13.
Glasgow! CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | :26:14. | :26:27.

consequence of her efforts and success. She has also been an | :27:27. | :27:35.
excellent role model for her peers, showing that a healthy lifestyle is | :27:36. | :27:39.
important and achievable in a sport where body shape and image tends to | :27:40. | :27:48.
dominate. She won six medals at these Games. And her team has | :27:49. | :27:54.
reported to us how inspirational her performances have been two young | :27:55. | :28:01.
children who would love to follow in her footsteps. -- to young children. | :28:02. | :28:09.

have witnessed superb sporting action, supported by fantastic | :29:40. | :29:46.
organisation. Made possible through the invaluable efforts of the | :29:47. | :29:51.
thousands of volunteers who, for many, will provide a lasting | :29:52. | :29:59.
impression of this city and Scotland's people. Thank you, | :30:00. | :30:02.
Clyde-sider is, you have been truly amazing! -- Clyde-siders. | :30:03. | :30:16.

Karen Mathieson, singing words by Robert Burns. | :35:58. | :36:48.
# I'll ne'er blame my partial fancy, # Nothing could resist my Nancy; # | :36:49. | :37:19.
But to see her was to love her; # Had we never lov'd say kindly, # Had | :37:20. | :37:40.
we never lov'd say kindly, # Never met--or never parted. | :37:41. | :38:02.
# Peace, enjoyment, love and pleasure | :38:03. | :38:23.
# Deep in heart-wrung tears I'll pledge thee | :38:24. | :38:50.
# Warring sighs and groans I'll wage thee | :38:51. | :38:56.
Robert Burns' most recorded love song, which sums up the sweet | :38:57. | :39:19.
sadness of parting. Before we entrust the safekeeping of | :39:20. | :41:15.
the Commonwealth Games flag to the Gold Coast, on behalf of | :41:16. | :41:20.
Commonwealth Games Scotland, I would like to express my thanks and | :41:21. | :41:24.

came here to compete in Glasgow. As the Games family, I believe we | :41:26. | :41:47.
have entertained and inspired the watching world within the last 11 | :41:48. | :41:52.
days, moment by moment, in competition, in victory and in | :41:53. | :41:57.
defeat, we have all insured that the Commonwealth Games have lived up to | :41:58. | :42:01.
their proud reputation as the Friendly Games. | :42:02. | :42:13.
For that, you will always have our sincere gratitude and respect. Thank | :42:14. | :42:14.

in a continuum that began in 1930. And now we all set our sights | :42:32. | :42:34.
on the next edition of the Games on the other side of the world - | :42:35. | :42:38.
Gold Coast in 2018. So, it is with bittersweet pleasure | :42:39. | :42:46.
that I return this ceremonial flag in order for it | :42:47. | :42:50.
to then be placed in the care of our friends and colleagues | :42:51. | :42:57.

Gold Coast in April 2018, where you will experience... Where you will | :46:33. | :46:40.
experience an event and a place where, as you will see in just a few | :46:41. | :46:42.
moments, anything is possible! be playing Waltzing Matilda. Is that | :46:43. | :47:08.
a bit of jealousy I hear from you, Andrew Cotter? One of Australia's | :47:09. | :47:16.
favourite holiday destinations with 12 million visitors every year. They | :47:17. | :47:24.
have 70 kilometres of beaches! And I don't think we will need a raincoat! | :47:25. | :47:37.
Ladies and gentlemen, representing Gold Coast 2018 Games, a singing | :47:38. | :47:40.
sensation, Jessica Mauboy. On behalf of my people, the Kuku | :47:41. | :47:50.
Yalanji from the North Queensland, and on behalf of all Australians, | :47:51. | :47:55.
I say, "Jingeri," which means "g'day", | :47:56. | :47:57.
and welcome to Yugambeh, Aboriginal language | :47:58. | :48:00.
of the Gold Coast, It's been an amazing two weeks | :48:01. | :48:02.
here in Glasgow, hasn't it? It's been an honour to witness | :48:03. | :48:09.
these extraordinary athletes compete and to see the friendship | :48:10. | :48:12.
and support they have for each other These Games show how our differences | :48:13. | :48:15.
can be celebrated and our struggle to succeed | :48:16. | :48:20.
can unite us - we now stand together celebrating | :48:21. | :48:24.
this, perhaps our real common wealth but right now, | :48:25. | :48:31.
I have an even greater honour. I get to invite you all | :48:32. | :48:34.
to come together again in four years' time | :48:35. | :48:36.
on the Gold Coast. Here in Glasgow, the sun is setting | :48:37. | :48:41.
on these Commonwealth Games, but 16,000 kilometres away, | :48:42. | :48:45.
on the other side of the world, the sun is rising on one of the | :48:46. | :48:48.
world's most beautiful coastlines - a place where you can feel | :48:49. | :48:51.
the sun on your face where the sounds of the ocean and | :48:52. | :48:54.
the scent of the rainforest merge. A city of sand castles | :48:55. | :49:00.
and skyscrapers, where the surf meets the sky, you'll | :49:01. | :49:05.
find the Gold Coast, Queensland. You'll also find | :49:06. | :49:12.
current world champion surfer and Gold Coaster Mick Fanning | :49:13. | :49:14.
doing what he does best. Hey, Jess, you're a bit overdressed | :49:15. | :49:31.
for the beach. Yeah, well, you're a bit | :49:32. | :49:34.
underdressed for where you're going. The Gold Coast is my home and | :49:35. | :49:38.
my inspiration. Nothing beats it. I grew up surfing there on some | :49:39. | :49:46.
of the best beaches in the world, dreaming of one day | :49:47. | :49:49.
becoming a world champion. Well, on the Gold Coast, | :49:50. | :49:52.
anything is possible, even 300 days of sunshine | :49:53. | :49:54.
every year! So, bring your sunscreen. | :49:55. | :49:58.
But don't worry if you forget. don't only patrol the beaches, | :49:59. | :50:00.
keeping them safe, they come armed with sunscreen | :50:01. | :50:05.
and good humour. After all, the Gold Coast is | :50:06. | :50:08.
famous for fun. Just ask this guy. That was awesome, that was amazing! | :50:09. | :50:27.
That was the best ride ever. Yeah, Gabe, that looks fun. | :50:28. | :50:30.
Come and tell us about it. So, it's fun | :50:31. | :50:41.
growing up on the Gold Coast? It's the coolest place on the | :50:42. | :50:48.
planet, I'm so lucky to live there. It's super-friendly, | :50:49. | :50:51.
everyone is chilled, great beaches and the best | :50:52. | :50:52.
theme parks and attractions. Yeah, the rides rip, but the natural | :50:53. | :50:57.
environment is pretty cool too. Hey, guys, ready - meet my friends? | :50:58. | :51:00.
You ready? Let's go. All right, well, enjoy. | :51:01. | :51:12.
I'm off to Glasgow. G'day, my name is Tenielle and I | :51:13. | :51:18.
live in Currumbin on the Gold Coast, where I work with the native animals | :51:19. | :51:22.
and birds. The Gold Coast | :51:23. | :51:24.
is an amazing ecosystem and one of the most biologically | :51:25. | :51:26.
diverse cities in Australia. It's a place | :51:27. | :51:29.
brimming with life and energy, pristine marine environments, | :51:30. | :51:33.
rainforests... and a unique collection | :51:34. | :51:36.
of flora and fauna, and just like my best friend | :51:37. | :51:43.
Phoenix, the red-tailed cockatoo. You'll also have Queensland | :51:44. | :51:48.

out of my head # I just can't get you | :33:13. | :33:43.
out of my head # La-la-la, la-la-la-la-la | :33:44. | :33:52.
La-la-la, la-la-la-la-la # I just can't get you | :33:53. | :33:55.
out of my head # I just can't get you | :33:56. | :33:59.
out of my head... # The perfect Glasgow love story, told | :34:00. | :34:42.
with chips, obviously! Ladies and gentlemen, Kylie! So many great | :34:43. | :34:47.
stories here tonight, amongst all the athletes, enjoying the closing | :34:48. | :34:52.
ceremony. We have got Tom Daley from Team England here. Tom, you will of | :34:53. | :35:00.
course were competing the diving. Congratulations on your silver and | :35:01. | :35:04.
the gold as well, tell us about the atmosphere. The whole Commonwealth | :35:05. | :35:09.
Games here in Scotland has been amazing. So friendly, the atmosphere | :35:10. | :35:13.
is amazing. Everybody is diving really well in Team England at the | :35:14. | :35:19.
moment, which is exciting. And for yourself, what will you take away | :35:20. | :35:24.
from the Games? It is always really nice to retain your title, and I | :35:25. | :35:28.
have been working hard at that. For me, it is also looking at and | :35:29. | :35:33.
helping the younger divers, like Alicia Blagg, when she won, seeing | :35:34. | :35:38.
all the hard work paying off. There we go, Tom Daley, ladies and | :35:39. | :35:44.
gentlemen. And next to me, the big man, from grenade. What was it like | :35:45. | :35:51.
experiencing the hand of roar? It was an amazing experience. The | :35:52. | :35:59.
stadium was packed. Scotland are really true fans of athletics and | :36:00. | :36:05.
the Commonwealth Games. You can come back any time, big man, we love | :36:06. | :36:09.
that. And you did not mind the weather? It is something you cannot | :36:10. | :36:13.
control, everybody has to deal with it. But the crowd really cancel out | :36:14. | :36:18.
the weather, with their warmth and support. That is beautiful! There | :36:19. | :36:25.
you go. I am going to squeeze in, because obviously, in four years' | :36:26. | :36:29.
time, we have got something special, it is going to be brilliant | :36:30. | :36:34.
having the Games on the Gold Coast. You must be looking forward to | :36:35. | :36:39.
that? Yes, for sure. We cannot wait. We had really hot weather here when | :36:40. | :36:43.
we raced, and that is exactly what it is going to be like on the Gold | :36:44. | :36:49.
Coast. For years will fly by. It was hot when you were racing - can you | :36:50. | :36:54.
stay around for a while?! And as for you, what will you take away from | :36:55. | :36:59.
the Scottish crowds? Well, it is my first Games, and it was the most | :37:00. | :37:03.
amazing experience. The Scottish people have just been so lovely and | :37:04. | :37:07.
accommodating, and really made us all feel really welcome. I am a Gold | :37:08. | :37:14.
Coast girl myself, so I cannot wait to get back home and experience the | :37:15. | :37:18.
Commonwealth Games there, hopefully. Let's hear it for the Aussies, they | :37:19. | :37:22.
have been great all the way through! So many stories, so many | :37:23. | :37:28.
people to get through. I can feel the emotion building, with this | :37:29. | :37:32.
music in the background. How has it been for you, coming from Barbados? | :37:33. | :37:38.
It has been great, the tournament, the people of Glasgow really came | :37:39. | :37:42.
out. They were really friendly. They really show their pride tonight, the | :37:43. | :37:52.
young at heart came out. We are shaking off our hard man image in | :37:53. | :37:56.
Glasgow. It is now my dubious honour to say, that WAS the Glasgow | :37:57. | :38:06.
Commonwealth 2014 Games. I hope you have enjoyed what we have done over | :38:07. | :38:12.
the last 11 days. Dougie MacLean and his band are getting ready to play | :38:13. | :38:16.
as out. Thank you for everything. We have loved having you here. I hope | :38:17. | :38:26.
you have loved it as well. And now, Dougie MacLean, who wrote a | :38:27. | :38:33.
song on a beach in France in 1987. He had been travelling around and | :38:34. | :38:38.
was feeling homesick, and this is what he wrote. | :38:39. | :38:48.
# In these last few days I've been afraid | :38:49. | :39:00.
# I've been telling old stories Singing songs | :39:01. | :39:10.
# That make me think about where I've come from | :39:11. | :39:14.
# That's the reason why I seem so far away today | :39:15. | :39:22.
# That I think about you all the time | :39:23. | :39:31.
# Know that it would make me more than sad | :39:32. | :39:47.
# Caledonia's been everything I've ever had | :39:48. | :39:54.
# Now I have moved and I've kept on moving | :39:55. | :39:57.
# Proved the points that I needed proving | :39:58. | :40:01.
# Lost the friends that I needed losing | :40:02. | :40:05.
# Stolen dreams Yes, there's no denying | :40:06. | :40:18.
# I have travelled hard Sometimes with conscience flying | :40:19. | :40:22.
# You know that it would make me more than sad | :40:23. | :40:51.
# Caledonia's been everything I've ever had | :40:52. | :41:03.
# You know that it would make me more than sad | :41:04. | :41:23.
# Caledonia's been everything I've ever had | :41:24. | :41:55.
# For auld lang syne, my dear For auld lang syne | :41:56. | :43:19.
# And there's a hand My trusty fere | :43:20. | :43:34.
# And we'll tak a right gude-willy waught | :43:35. | :43:43.
ANDREW COTTER: And that brings us to an end. That was the closing | :43:44. | :44:55.
ceremony of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. A grand closing ceremony, or | :44:56. | :45:11.
an extraordinarily impressive opening ceremony, ahead of the | :45:12. | :45:18.
football match next weekend. But it is now very nearly over. | :45:19. | :45:31.
So, thank you to Glasgow for the Commonwealth Games you have given | :45:32. | :46:09.
us. CLARE BALDING: FANTASTIC SHOTS FROM | :46:10. | :47:17.
ABOVE. KYLIE WAS LOVING THAT, ALTHOUGH I | :47:18. | :47:23.
WAS slightly concerned with both outfits that she did not have enough | :47:24. | :47:28.
clothes on for the Scottish evening! But there were moments which really | :47:29. | :47:32.
resonated. The David Dixon Award to the Athlete Of The Games for | :47:33. | :47:38.
sporting excellence went to Frankie Jones of Wales, and there was huge | :47:39. | :47:41.
applause, even before Prince Imran announced her name. But also, | :47:42. | :47:44.
massive applause when he said that this was the best Games ever. Hazel | :47:45. | :47:50.
Irvine has rushed from her commentary position to join | :47:51. | :47:55.
Katherine Grainger, Steve Cram and myself. Oh, that was a good party. | :47:56. | :48:04.
It was great. Katherine Grainger and myself had a little dance, actually. | :48:05. | :48:11.
I was so happy I did not wear my pink outfit tonight. It would have | :48:12. | :48:19.
been embarrassing! Oh, dear! Oh, Lord! | :48:20. | :48:26.
STEVE CRAM: Go, girls! I actually think that Kylie Minogue, along with | :48:27. | :48:33.
Claudia Fragapane, is the other Pocket Rocket of the Games! Back to | :48:34. | :48:41.
Frankie Jones, what a fantastic award for her to get. I know that | :48:42. | :48:49.
you identified ways -- with her as an athlete, didn't you? Yes, you see | :48:50. | :48:54.
those athletes live, and they are stunning. I think I can relate. She | :48:55. | :49:01.
got silver after silver after silver, and then cracked it with the | :49:02. | :49:07.
gold, and I can relate to that. I met her afterwards, I met her | :49:08. | :49:10.
before, she was so emotional. Everybody you speak to in June | :49:11. | :49:14.
sticks says what an incredible influence she is. She sets the | :49:15. | :49:20.
standard. She is retiring now. I was saying to her, are you going to have | :49:21. | :49:26.
a holiday? She says she wants to stay involved in gymnastics and give | :49:27. | :49:32.
it all back. Amazing. It was lovely to see her get that award, and I was | :49:33. | :49:36.
not really conscious of that award before. As you say, it is not just | :49:37. | :49:41.
for performance, it is for the influence exerted by that athlete | :49:42. | :49:45.
on, presumably, future generations, by the way they have carried | :49:46. | :49:52.
themselves through the Games. It is the style and the grace of the | :49:53. | :49:56.
person as well. I think with any of these major Games, we talk a lot | :49:57. | :50:01.
about the gold medallists and the champions, but it is always the | :50:02. | :50:06.
stories. This afternoon I was watching the cycling road race in | :50:07. | :50:10.
the rain, and I got chatting to a couple of people next to me. Were | :50:11. | :50:14.
saying they had never been to an event like this before, they were | :50:15. | :50:17.
sort of sports fans, but this is what captivates people. It is the | :50:18. | :50:23.
little journeys, the big journey is talking about Lynsey Sharp, she is | :50:24. | :50:27.
quite well-known, but a lot of people are not well-known. That is | :50:28. | :50:31.
what really draws people into events like this. Sports like rhythmic | :50:32. | :50:35.
gymnastics every now and then get their moment on TV, and we find out | :50:36. | :50:40.
about people like this. Yes, and possibly Jo Pavey would have been in | :50:41. | :50:44.
the running for that, in terms of what she has done. She has inspired | :50:45. | :50:49.
in a different way, she is probably now inspiring a bunch of 40-year-old | :50:50. | :50:55.
mums to get out there and run! If you want to get involved in sport, | :50:56. | :51:00.
then you can go to the BBC website, go to the Get Inspired section, | :51:01. | :51:06.
because it would be rather lovely to think that these Games are about | :51:07. | :51:08.
more than achievement, Steve. We have heard what we believe this has | :51:09. | :51:15.
done for Glasgow, and we hope that is a long-lasting effect, but also | :51:16. | :51:18.
for sport in general, seeing people as young as 13 and as old as 67 | :51:19. | :51:21.
winning medals. It goes back to my first | :51:22. | :51:33.
Commonwealth Games, 1978. I could not get my coach out to Canada and | :51:34. | :51:37.
it was a bit of a shock but I bumped into a guy at the warm up track, and | :51:38. | :51:42.
he said, Stevie! I said, what are you doing here? He said, I am the | :51:43. | :51:47.
manager of the Turks and Caicos Islands team. He knew my coach, | :51:48. | :51:53.
Jimmy. He was on his way out and said, I will get him accreditation. | :51:54. | :52:03.
He became the coach for the whole week for them. All of them were in a | :52:04. | :52:07.
steel band and they have been picked because they were in a band rather | :52:08. | :52:11.
than athletes! And I thought, this is great. Up till that point, I had | :52:12. | :52:15.
their experience of that and I have never forgotten the thought that, | :52:16. | :52:20.
this will be it, the chance to represent their country and it will | :52:21. | :52:23.
never get any better for them than that. For others, yes, it is the | :52:24. | :52:29.
Usain Bolts and part of a bigger thing, but we should never forget | :52:30. | :52:33.
the small people who come to this. And actually, Usain Bolt being one | :52:34. | :52:37.
of the bigger names who came, I was very struck by his performance and | :52:38. | :52:41.
Jamaica winning the relay, but the way he entered into it as well and | :52:42. | :52:48.
his moves are better! But it was great the way he interacted with the | :52:49. | :52:53.
crowd, wasn't it? Yes, and it is the lack of cynicism. As we see you | :52:54. | :53:01.
saying, yes, he has got to be brought into the Scottish ranks | :53:02. | :53:05.
because he clearly knows The Proclaimers. Fantastic, on fire last | :53:06. | :53:11.
night! But last night it was said that the world is a pretty cynical | :53:12. | :53:17.
place but these Games are a pretty cynicism-free environment and it is | :53:18. | :53:22.
down to the fact you have such a diversity of people, people with | :53:23. | :53:27.
full-time jobs for whom it is once-in-a-lifetime experience and it | :53:28. | :53:29.
brings you back down to earth and reminds you of how lucky you are. | :53:30. | :53:34.
And just looking at these shots, this is the biggest name in probably | :53:35. | :53:38.
world sport, and he is getting in there and he is the one taking the | :53:39. | :53:44.
selfies, and for anybody you question for one second anything he | :53:45. | :53:47.
was either misreported as saying or not running as an individual in the | :53:48. | :53:50.
100 metres, don't you think that would have changed the mind of any | :53:51. | :53:57.
cynics? Absolutely. Let's counterbalance this argument. There | :53:58. | :54:00.
are athletes who come here to improve their careers and win gold | :54:01. | :54:04.
medals and Usain Bolt has been through all of that. So he is at a | :54:05. | :54:08.
part of his career which is about giving back a bit, and that is what | :54:09. | :54:12.
I love about. He didn't have to come but he came and he knows what he is | :54:13. | :54:17.
in sport and world sport, and he has added to these Games just by being | :54:18. | :54:22.
here. And I would say... I mean, sadly, Mo was not here. And if you | :54:23. | :54:30.
couldn't, and didn't come, you have missed out on something. But I hope | :54:31. | :54:36.
it has refreshed Bolt's desire to be part of this sport. He might have | :54:37. | :54:39.
been thinking, there are bigger things out there I can do. But I | :54:40. | :54:44.
hope his experience in this stadium means we will see him for a few more | :54:45. | :54:49.
years. They are going to have a tough act to follow in the Gold | :54:50. | :54:52.
Coast but what do you hope they will take with them from Glasgow? There | :54:53. | :54:57.
is so much. As we have said, the performances will always be there. | :54:58. | :55:02.
The superstars, some people who will become superstars. Frankie Jones, we | :55:03. | :55:09.
now almost her. I think the spirit here was very special and it still | :55:10. | :55:12.
retains the title of the Friendly Games. -- we now know her. It is | :55:13. | :55:21.
all-inclusive, everyone having a great time as well as the top end | :55:22. | :55:25.
competition, and the great thing for Australia is that it is a very | :55:26. | :55:28.
laid-back country but they are passionate about their sport. It is | :55:29. | :55:33.
like after our Olympics. That was named the greatest Games. They have | :55:34. | :55:37.
a tough thing to follow but they love the competition so they will | :55:38. | :55:41.
try to raise the bar again but if you can keep the spirit and | :55:42. | :55:44.
enjoyment and involve the whole city and the people, the spectators, the | :55:45. | :55:54.
volunteers so everybody has a great time, then it is special. We have | :55:55. | :55:56.
most certainly had a great time here and a massive thank you to everybody | :55:57. | :56:03.
who has been so positive about the Games. The Clyde-siders, the 15,000 | :56:04. | :56:09.
volunteers, with all of that it has been very, very special. For me it | :56:10. | :56:14.
has been joyous and I hope this last 11 days has given you a glimpse into | :56:15. | :56:20.
something that is here everyday. The humanity, the creativity, the good | :56:21. | :56:24.
humour of everybody here in Glasgow and from all of us here, we would | :56:25. | :56:31.
like to say farewell to the Armadillo and the Chris Hoy | :56:32. | :56:33.
velodrome for the time being, and thank you to Glasgow and all of the | :56:34. | :56:37.
athletes all over the Commonwealth, and thank you to you for sharing | :56:38. | :56:41.
these last 11 days with us. It has been a blast. Bye-bye. | :56:42. | :56:52.
