Good evening. Coming up over the next three days, Great Britain's

:00:28.:00:33.

Davis Cup tie against the United States it is Britain's first

:00:34.:00:37.

appearance in the world group since 2008. Now, they are familiar in this

:00:38.:00:42.

competition that dates back more than 100 years. During that time it

:00:43.:00:48.

has produced patriot patriotic scenes and sporting drama around the

:00:49.:00:52.

world. Ties between Great Britain and the United States are special

:00:53.:00:56.

and always have been. Lord's, ladies and gentlemen, the

:00:57.:01:02.

British Davis Cup team... There was something about it - it made you

:01:03.:01:06.

proud. Probably mattered more to the British than the Americans. Now you

:01:07.:01:12.

see the rally... That's it - they have done it! Great Britain through

:01:13.:01:19.

to the Davis Cup final. McEnroe's victory put the cup beyond Britain's

:01:20.:01:28.

reach. That's it. A truly amazing scene!

:01:29.:01:32.

We find ourselves in the world group again after a five-year gap. It is

:01:33.:01:37.

one of the things that makes it different throw are some tactics in

:01:38.:01:42.

it. Everyone is desperate to play it is unique in so many ways. With me,

:01:43.:01:50.

two people who know all about Davis Cup tennis. We saw a clip of you -

:01:51.:01:56.

that was in 1978. That was on USA soil. What is it like playing

:01:57.:02:01.

America there? It is tough. We had a big crowd. It was in Palm Springs. I

:02:02.:02:06.

had to play John McEnroe, which was not nice for me. There is always a

:02:07.:02:10.

good atmosphere. Hopefully if the crowd is big - there is something

:02:11.:02:16.

special about GB against the USA. That was a nice shot of your dad. He

:02:17.:02:24.

was a daifts cup captain. What an amazing picture. It is an in

:02:25.:02:29.

incredible tie, one I look forward to. I know you would love to be out

:02:30.:02:34.

there. You have been given the all-clear from cancer, which is

:02:35.:02:39.

great. Hopefully you'll be back in the soon. What is the team like -

:02:40.:02:44.

have they looked forward to this? Absolutely. Everybody in the team

:02:45.:02:50.

thrives on the Davis Cup. They look forward to the atmosphere limit be a

:02:51.:02:55.

great atmosphere out there in San Diego. It is tough against the USA.

:02:56.:03:03.

It will be an I mazing atmosphere. Ward -- an amazing atmosphere. James

:03:04.:03:07.

Ward has been playing well. Now it is more wide open. Yes James Ward v

:03:08.:03:12.

Andy Murray, carrying the hopes for the nation in the singles. Back in

:03:13.:03:18.

the world oup - the first time since 2008. It is great to be there, isn't

:03:19.:03:23.

it? It is very special. When you have a player like Andy Murray in

:03:24.:03:28.

your team, he can win two singles in all of the matches. You look at the

:03:29.:03:33.

Groups there. There are many tough teams out there. It is good to see

:03:34.:03:37.

Australia back as well. The Czech Republic, they are back. There's an

:03:38.:03:44.

interesting one at the bottom. That will be interesting to follow.

:03:45.:03:48.

Of course we will keep an eye on Great Britain against the United

:03:49.:03:53.

States. The winner will face Argentina or Italy in April. We will

:03:54.:03:57.

keep you up-to-date as it goes along. Let's talk about Andy coming

:03:58.:04:01.

into this. He is playing up against Donald Young, which, as you said,

:04:02.:04:05.

has come in because of John Isner. Andy, it is great to have him and he

:04:06.:04:10.

always said to Leon, I will come and play and he did against Croatia and

:04:11.:04:15.

this is where he wants to be. Absolutely. He said his focus the

:04:16.:04:19.

last couple of years were Grand Slams. Now he has that title he is

:04:20.:04:23.

able to concentrate on the Davis Cup. He played well in Australia.

:04:24.:04:31.

Probably 80% of his best level. He is fit fighting fit. He is healthy.

:04:32.:04:36.

-- he is fighting fit. He is healthy.

:04:37.:04:41.

Play getting underway in just a moment. We were at the arena last

:04:42.:04:48.

weekend. Rod is back. He lives in California. He is making his way on

:04:49.:04:57.

to court for the coin toss. He will enjoy Great Britain against the

:04:58.:05:01.

United States. He is shaking hands with Jim Courier, shaking hands.

:05:02.:05:08.

There's the captain. I know, you live in California as well - he is

:05:09.:05:15.

quite a presence out there? The most modest champion of all time. You

:05:16.:05:19.

would not think he has won through the Grand Slam twice. He comes out,

:05:20.:05:24.

hits a few balls. He talks well about the present-day champions. No

:05:25.:05:29.

jealousy or anything. He is a wonderful man. He hit with Roger

:05:30.:05:35.

Federer in Melbourne. That was amazing! Roger Federer knows all

:05:36.:05:41.

about legends and the history of the game and how important it is. It is

:05:42.:05:46.

lovely they are honoured at all the Grand Slams. Wimbledon does its

:05:47.:05:52.

thing as well. Everyone appreciated what anyone did in any generation.

:05:53.:05:58.

Rod, he is many people's best of all times. That is the opening match. As

:05:59.:06:14.

Rod does the coin toss... So that was a few minutes ago. The players

:06:15.:06:18.

are on court. We have three days to look forward to. And of course this

:06:19.:06:20.

singles match is first on court. It is doubles tomorrow. The Britain

:06:21.:06:46.

brothers we expect it to be Sam Querrey, Colin Fleming.

:06:47.:06:50.

It looks good. It will be a fantastic match on Sunday evening.

:06:51.:06:53.

Really exciting. Looking at Andy, he is looking very good. He is looking

:06:54.:07:01.

good against left-handers. He is feeling good. He'll be trying

:07:02.:07:08.

to get one ahead. We will talk between matches about

:07:09.:07:12.

why Leon went for him and instead of Kyle Edmund. As far as this match is

:07:13.:07:17.

concerned, well Jim Courier has had a difficult week. Boy, John Isner -

:07:18.:07:23.

he said he knew a week ago, he pulled out of his first round in

:07:24.:07:27.

Australia. To lose Isner and to bring in Donald Young - ranked 79th.

:07:28.:07:32.

When you look at what has happened to American tennis! That sums it up.

:07:33.:07:36.

No disrespect to Donald Young, at 79, to be in the Davis Cup match for

:07:37.:07:40.

the United States. When would you ever expect that to happen? Jim

:07:41.:07:46.

Courier had no choice. The good thing is, if he will be nervous and

:07:47.:07:51.

I am sure he will be, it is better he goes up against Andy in the first

:07:52.:07:55.

match. He can open his shoulders up. No-one is expecting him to win. It

:07:56.:07:59.

is a tough ask for Donald Young. This is way above his sort of pay

:08:00.:08:04.

grade, so to speak, going into a Davis Cup in a world group. Weapon

:08:05.:08:09.

will see how he adapts. We are playing at the baseball ground

:08:10.:08:13.

there. They have made this court - it has been a big talking point

:08:14.:08:17.

because it is a temporary play court. It looks like a red European

:08:18.:08:22.

Court. It is fast, it is slippery and they think it is dangerous. They

:08:23.:08:27.

are trying to change it. That could play into Britain's hands as well. I

:08:28.:08:31.

was surprised when they put it on clay. I thought they would have a

:08:32.:08:37.

faster court. Of to put it on a clay court. Isner had success in the

:08:38.:08:42.

past. He won in France last year. John Isner is not here. It come

:08:43.:08:47.

comes down in favour for the British team. I have heard it is fast,

:08:48.:08:51.

slippery and tough to move out of corners. I have heard the bounce is

:08:52.:08:58.

true. When it is a dodgy clay court, the bounce is wonky. It is important

:08:59.:09:06.

so Andy does not get frustrated and can play his normal name. He got the

:09:07.:09:12.

trouble with his back and pulled out of the clay court season earlier.

:09:13.:09:16.

That was the problems earlier this year he will be weary about his

:09:17.:09:19.

movement. He does not want anything to go wrong. The calm is the home

:09:20.:09:25.

team can do whatever they want. Having said this, if this surface is

:09:26.:09:31.

unpredictable and dangerous - they were saying they should have rules

:09:32.:09:35.

where the court has to be laid in a certain amount of time so the

:09:36.:09:37.

officials can check it out. You should not be allowed to put a court

:09:38.:09:43.

in which is dangerous for the players. Hopefully that will not

:09:44.:09:48.

happen today. Let's talk about Donald Young. He has a win over Andy

:09:49.:09:55.

at India wells back in 2011. He plays well. He is fast and plays

:09:56.:09:59.

well. A very good forehand. He doesn't always seem like he's

:10:00.:10:03.

mentally there. He often seems frustrated with the set-up.

:10:04.:10:07.

Sometimes it can get the better of him on court. If Andy can play to

:10:08.:10:13.

his level and keep his mind solid he'll have too much for Donald

:10:14.:10:18.

Young. Donald Young took a set offer Ferrer in Auckland.

:10:19.:10:21.

Andy is the far stronger player. As we see here he has huge experience,

:10:22.:10:26.

Andy and far the greater player of Donald Young. These historic

:10:27.:10:30.

meetings, there have been so many between these two nations. They date

:10:31.:10:35.

back - that was the first match back in 1900 between America and Great

:10:36.:10:38.

Britain. More and more countries have been added. 122 taking part in

:10:39.:10:43.

the Davis Cup this year. I am worried to see Andy leaving the

:10:44.:10:46.

court straight away. Maybe a little nervous or something.

:10:47.:10:51.

Who knows what it is! This is making Donald think more about - this is a

:10:52.:10:57.

big match for him. It is tough for Jim Courier to have a debutante on

:10:58.:11:04.

the chair. He has his towel over his head. It is like, captain, I am

:11:05.:11:08.

ignoring you. It is interesting opening scenes. Courier a relaxed

:11:09.:11:12.

personality. He has been in Australia. He has worked for TV. He

:11:13.:11:16.

would have spent time with Donald Young. Having him as a back-up I

:11:17.:11:20.

expected Courier and Young to be together, talking a lot, emotional,

:11:21.:11:26.

going about fr on about where to serve -- going on about where to

:11:27.:11:30.

serve. Every player is different. John will talk about it more in

:11:31.:11:34.

commentary because he has headed up to the commentary box now. Andy

:11:35.:11:39.

didn't want to talk. We will see that and the difference between the

:11:40.:11:44.

two singles matches that Leon Smith will be really talking to, bending

:11:45.:11:49.

down, getting in James Ward's ear, whereas Andy knows it all. He'll let

:11:50.:11:55.

him do his thing and let him be there if he needs him. Leon will not

:11:56.:12:00.

be worried that Andy is walking behind the court - I am sure it was

:12:01.:12:05.

a brief toilet break. Leon doesn't have to say much. This is what Jim

:12:06.:12:11.

Courier is paid for. He has a tough job as American captain - it is for

:12:12.:12:16.

moments like this. Difficult situations to mentor Donald Young in

:12:17.:12:19.

his opening match. It will be a tough ask for Donald Young. Andy

:12:20.:12:24.

will get some fist pumps to get GB off to a good start. Ross, you are

:12:25.:12:29.

heading up to the commentary box as well. You can keep in -- get in

:12:30.:12:38.

touch via the website: You can Tweet us or on Facebook. We

:12:39.:12:45.

are getting underway here. Ross will join John Lloyd and John

:12:46.:12:47.

Overend for this one. It is morning out in California. A

:12:48.:13:41.

grey and overcast day. Some lovely weather in the build-up to this tie.

:13:42.:13:45.

Some rain in the morning forecast. Hopefully that will stay away.

:13:46.:14:07.

Looking like he's going for extra warmth there with two layers. He

:14:08.:14:15.

didn't play the last time Britain were at this elite level, pulling

:14:16.:14:19.

out a couple of days before the match in Argentina, five years ago.

:14:20.:14:36.

Not an episode recorded with any great satisfaction by anyone

:14:37.:14:44.

involved. Five years on, here he is - the USA against Great Britain. The

:14:45.:14:47.

first round of the world group. The longest rally we've had.

:14:48.:16:11.

Watching this, obviously the first game only, maybe because of the

:16:12.:16:14.

atmosphere being that heavy, it doesn't look that fast at the

:16:15.:16:17.

moment. They have talked about how it is a fast leg, but so far doesn't

:16:18.:16:20.

look very quick. Murray closes up the open ping day

:16:21.:18:23.

on the clay in San Diego. There's Jim Courier. The former world number

:18:24.:18:28.

one. A four-time Grand Slam champion. Jacket and tie. What is

:18:29.:18:32.

that? I would like to see him wear that if he goes to Argentina in the

:18:33.:18:36.

summer! I would like to see if he keeps his jacket on. A hot talking

:18:37.:18:46.

point - the attire. Not sure many agree with it.

:18:47.:18:52.

Fascinating to see Donald Young under his towel.

:18:53.:18:56.

You expect the final few words of the captain. That was a proper, no,

:18:57.:19:00.

I don't want to hear from you. Go away!

:19:01.:19:05.

They have been getting on well during the practise sessions, from

:19:06.:19:06.

what I hear. A lot of communication. Good play there from Murray. Good

:19:07.:20:42.

depth on the forehand and Young is not going to get away with too many

:20:43.:20:48.

of his balls. That length is not going to get the

:20:49.:20:54.

job done. A long way back behind the baseline.

:20:55.:21:08.

That is reminiscent of the very first shot Andy Murray played in the

:21:09.:21:15.

Davis Cup, out in Israel, 2005. Debut, first ball, reserving serve,

:21:16.:21:21.

thumped it, like that one. It was a doubles match.

:21:22.:21:56.

It is about biding your time, waiting for the opportunity to make

:21:57.:22:00.

the American miss and move. And this is what inevitably happens.

:22:01.:22:05.

A very interesting character, Donald Young. Billed as, well, the next big

:22:06.:22:13.

thing - practically for the past decade. Given wildcards at 15, 16,

:22:14.:22:21.

17, 18. This is his Davis Cup debut. He's 79

:22:22.:22:26.

in the world at the moment. He has been as high as 38. I think it would

:22:27.:22:32.

be fair to say they are still waiting Stateside for him to fulfil

:22:33.:22:37.

all that early potential when he won the Australian Open juniors at just

:22:38.:22:40.

15. Donald Young probably owes a few

:22:41.:22:52.

dinners to John McEnroe over the years. John McEnroe was the first

:22:53.:23:00.

one who raved how good he would be. He picked it up and gave him a huge

:23:01.:23:04.

contract, which ran for a number of years.

:23:05.:23:14.

It is always nice to have him on his side. If you remember, in 2 11,

:23:15.:23:23.

sorry 2012, Donald Young was on a 23-match losing streak, or late 20s.

:23:24.:23:30.

It was a tough time for Young. He's done better in recent times.

:23:31.:23:50.

Excellent start from the Wimbledon champion. That year he won, he only

:23:51.:23:57.

won five matches in the season. 24 defeats.

:23:58.:24:02.

At times you feel he and his family have a very high Estaiation of his

:24:03.:24:10.

own ability -- estimation of his ability. He talked about them on

:24:11.:24:17.

Twitter because they would not give him a wildcard into Wimbledon. They

:24:18.:24:23.

had to apologise. He said he believed the sentiment behind the

:24:24.:24:26.

Tweet in the first place. In that respect it is surprising to see him

:24:27.:24:30.

get the call up here and represent the US in this tie. I know a lot of

:24:31.:24:35.

people felted that was basically -- felt that was basically

:24:36.:24:42.

career-suicide. The amount of wildcards, and for him to complain

:24:43.:24:49.

was mindboggling. I am sure the U S TA were not happy about that. There

:24:50.:24:54.

was no-one else to pick, really. I watched a couple of American players

:24:55.:24:58.

- a young player, who is looking good. I thought he could be

:24:59.:25:03.

involved, Ryan Harrison - very surprising he has not got the call

:25:04.:25:07.

up. Jim Courier clearly fancies him and likes the way he plays.

:25:08.:25:46.

Although this is the fourth game - the best of five-set matches. It is

:25:47.:25:59.

not going the American's way. A rookie and Andy Murray very

:26:00.:26:02.

professional the way he started this match to. A nervous opponent, he's

:26:03.:26:04.

not giving anything. You know what Jim Courier is

:26:05.:26:24.

thinking - you should have listened to me before the match.

:26:25.:26:28.

It is not a good start for the debutante, Donald Young.

:26:29.:27:09.

Seen the one down-the-line. That was crosscourt and pressure on Donald

:27:10.:27:17.

Young's serve. Doesn't have a particularly big serve. That will

:27:18.:27:19.

get eaten alive by Murray. Murray doing an excellent job here.

:27:20.:27:35.

Best of five sets in Davis Cup. The captain is looking over his

:27:36.:27:54.

shoulder already. That is not a good sign. The feet

:27:55.:28:11.

were not moving there at all. He is tired.

:28:12.:28:24.

And so is he too. There comes a point when you are

:28:25.:28:29.

four-love down, the first match ever for your country, you start wanting

:28:30.:28:31.

to win a game in this first set Really impressive from Murray.

:28:32.:29:04.

Young, not a the races. Britain against the USA on clay, in

:29:05.:29:11.

California. Such a proud tradition these two meeting, not just in

:29:12.:29:18.

tennis. The first ever Davis Cup tie in 1900. John Lloyd you were a coach

:29:19.:29:39.

when Britain last played in the final. It is unclear if you were

:29:40.:29:46.

involved in 1995, but you have lots of experience in battles between

:29:47.:29:51.

these nations? Well, I will tell you one thing, Jim Courier, it is not

:29:52.:29:56.

only that he is losing, that is expected but it is the way that he

:29:57.:30:00.

is going about it at the moment. The problem here, that is what Jim

:30:01.:30:04.

Courier is thinking now, he is not expecting him to beat Andy Murray

:30:05.:30:08.

but if his confidence take as battering, he may have to play the

:30:09.:30:13.

fifth rubber. The best case scenario is to play a good match to get rid

:30:14.:30:17.

of the nerves, but at the moment, it is turning out to be a disaster for

:30:18.:30:22.

him. He must get back on board here somewhere.

:30:23.:30:36.

I suppose, John, if Andy Murray is in form, which he looks to be, and

:30:37.:30:53.

fully fit, which he looks be, which he really is, he could be playing

:30:54.:30:59.

for the doubles tomorrow. As with things standing with the

:31:00.:31:04.

team nominations it could be James Ward against Donald Young would that

:31:05.:31:09.

not be something if Britain can win in their back yard on clay? The last

:31:10.:31:15.

time that Britain beat the USA in the Davis Cup was 1935. That S at

:31:16.:31:22.

Wimbledon. And the last win on clay was 81 years ago. 1933.

:31:23.:31:32.

I do think that this is a 50/50 tie. With Isner in the team I think that

:31:33.:31:36.

the Americans would have been the favourite.

:31:37.:31:52.

And everyone in San Diego in the past week, realised that Isner would

:31:53.:31:59.

pull out. So Donald Young has had time to prepare. He has had ready to

:32:00.:32:05.

play. Some time on the courts. No real excuses other than nerves to

:32:06.:32:06.

play a poor opening first set. The problem is if you are tight,

:32:07.:32:25.

Andy Murray is about the worst person to play. He makes you play so

:32:26.:32:31.

many balls. It is difficult to get the ball past him!

:32:32.:32:51.

Well its his first game on the board for Donald Young.

:32:52.:32:58.

That is what Donald Young has to do. He must go back to when he is

:32:59.:33:04.

struggling. He must use the serve and the forehand. He will be

:33:05.:33:08.

relieved he has the opening game of his Davis Cup career, but it is not

:33:09.:33:12.

looking good so far. Was that Mike or Bob? That was Mike.

:33:13.:33:19.

Wow! That is good. I could not tell! A slightly thinner face.

:33:20.:33:21.

I will have to look for that. This is very difficult to move

:33:22.:33:44.

behind on a slippery clay-court. It takes the time away from the

:33:45.:33:47.

opponent. Andy Murray is controlling the centre of the court so well. He

:33:48.:33:52.

is making his opponent struggle with the movement.

:33:53.:34:48.

Oh, dear, even with a decent net approach, Donald Young can't make

:34:49.:34:56.

the volley. It is three set points for Andy Murray in just 22 minutes.

:34:57.:35:10.

There it is! A perfect start for Britain.

:35:11.:35:35.

Memories with this Britain/USA match of that incredible tie, John, that

:35:36.:35:40.

you were very much at the heart in 1999. I'm sure some of you may have

:35:41.:35:46.

been there in the arena. Probably one of the greatest Davis Cup ties,

:35:47.:35:52.

certainly in recent years. The atmosphere incredible. It came down

:35:53.:35:55.

to the final set and the final match. That's right. With Jim

:35:56.:36:10.

Courier and rudz rudz rudz. -- and Greg Rudseksi, but Jim Courier was

:36:11.:36:14.

amazing when it came down to it. A fabulous tie.

:36:15.:36:19.

It was 8-6 in the final set for Jim Courier. Todd Martin and big Greg on

:36:20.:36:27.

straight sets on the opening day. Being on a temporary gantry with the

:36:28.:36:33.

commentary boxes.therapy rattling from the vibe rations of the crowd

:36:34.:36:38.

noise that very day. This is very different. This stadium is set up in

:36:39.:36:44.

left field of the Petco Park. It certainly looks good. You may have

:36:45.:36:47.

thought they would have sold a few more tickets but maybe it will fill

:36:48.:36:53.

up as the day goes on. I think it was a bit of a troubled

:36:54.:36:58.

match this for the promoters. I think that the USTA were seeing who

:36:59.:37:07.

would take it but it comes up against the Super Bowl on Sunday.

:37:08.:37:12.

You don't want any sporting event going up against that in the States,

:37:13.:37:16.

but it is disappointing to see a crowd like this, to be honest. You

:37:17.:37:22.

would expect this to be completely packed. It is a disappointing crowd.

:37:23.:37:27.

Are you surprised about the surface choice, John? When I heard about it,

:37:28.:37:32.

I presumed in Jim Courier's mind, he has to think that, you know,

:37:33.:37:40.

obviously Isner would have a chance against Andy Murray, and obviously

:37:41.:37:43.

to make sure that number two was taken care of but that it could come

:37:44.:37:50.

down to the doubles. I thought that the Bryans would have something to

:37:51.:37:54.

say on that, but I am surprised about the surface.

:37:55.:37:57.

One of the reasons that Jim Courier chose the surface was hoping that

:37:58.:38:01.

Andy Murray would not play. Knowing the back history. Knowing he does

:38:02.:38:05.

not fancy a match on clay, but to use that as a reason would be

:38:06.:38:11.

surprising on home court territory? Yes.

:38:12.:38:16.

It has cost a lot of money to install the temporary clay-court it

:38:17.:38:20.

is never easy. Normally in an ideal world you give a court like this

:38:21.:38:25.

time to bed in. That has not happened. That is why it has been

:38:26.:38:31.

slippery in practise. A lot of the players have been talking about

:38:32.:38:36.

that. No slips or slides, though so far. The second set. The best of

:38:37.:38:38.

five. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

:38:39.:39:12.

That's far away Donald Young's best point so far. He was able to move

:39:13.:39:16.

his opponent. And that is pretty much the story of

:39:17.:39:41.

his career in two points. A decent point but the inconsistency is

:39:42.:39:46.

holding him back. Absolutely.

:39:47.:39:52.

That was a shocking forehand. Mid-way up the net there. That is

:39:53.:39:57.

the problem. A little bit of panic is setting into his game.

:39:58.:40:04.

It can easily happen when you are up against someone like Andy Murray,

:40:05.:40:08.

with the best of five. You feel like you can't hit winners against him.

:40:09.:40:14.

Fortunately, although that was a decent serve, he will not get many

:40:15.:40:17.

cheap points on his serve, either. Oh! A classic Andy Murray!

:40:18.:41:13.

Absolutely classic. Grinding down his opponent and finishing the point

:41:14.:41:15.

in style. The other factor here, of course, if

:41:16.:42:04.

Andy Murray can get this done very quickly, almost certainly he will be

:42:05.:42:08.

out to play the doubles tomorrow. It would be a great boost for Britain.

:42:09.:42:14.

I'm sure he wants to play any way, but if this were to be a long three

:42:15.:42:23.

to five hour match-set, it could have been less possible.

:42:24.:42:27.

It could increase the possibility for Dominic Inglot coming into the

:42:28.:42:30.

kwaut et. Yes, whenever you have someone of

:42:31.:42:35.

Andy Murray's stature in the team, you wait until as late as possible

:42:36.:42:39.

in the morning, on the Saturday morning to see if he can play in the

:42:40.:42:52.

doubles match. "Am I playing?" " " know, Andy has

:42:53.:43:11.

not told us yet"! The problem in that game, it is a grind for him to

:43:12.:43:18.

win the points. We have talked about Donald Young's

:43:19.:43:24.

struggles but Andy Murray has been in impressive form. Hardly missed a

:43:25.:43:31.

ball. The few he missed were in the opening game, but he has played

:43:32.:43:36.

really well in the opening game on clay-court.

:43:37.:43:39.

His movement is good. He is sliding well. The balance is good. He does

:43:40.:43:44.

not look rushed. He is in total control at the moment.

:43:45.:44:10.

This is Enri kwushgs e Molina coming down to inspect the line. It has

:44:11.:44:21.

clipped the line. -- Enrigue.

:44:22.:44:25.

He can accurately determine whether it is in or out.

:44:26.:44:56.

Oh! Andy Murray has done so well to keep that rally alive. That will

:44:57.:45:06.

have tested the back. Young trying to put it away at the

:45:07.:45:10.

net. . It is what we have come to expect

:45:11.:45:15.

from Andy Murray now, isn't it? You just want to make your opponent keep

:45:16.:45:18.

playing one more shot in the rally. Murray has improved so much in the

:45:19.:45:38.

forecourt. He is able to build the rally from the start. As soon as

:45:39.:45:47.

there is a snip of opportunity to take the point, he is off. I'm not

:45:48.:45:54.

sure about the speed. 139 miles per hour on a serve.

:45:55.:45:56.

That's generous! Again we talk about classic Murray

:45:57.:46:26.

plays, that is what he is so good at. He spots his opponent coming

:46:27.:46:31.

into the net, doesn't he? He knows exactly where he will be at the

:46:32.:46:35.

right time. So he plays that passing shot with just the right speed so it

:46:36.:46:37.

lands down at the shoe laces. As soon as the rallies go past four

:46:38.:47:56.

or five shots, Murray is in such control. The way he is orchestrating

:47:57.:48:01.

the point and moving his opponent. It looks like he's played on the

:48:02.:48:05.

clay for a long time. Yes, the forehand is looking awesome today.

:48:06.:49:26.

Problems again for Young. He has no clay-court record to speak of at

:49:27.:49:34.

all. You would have to go back to April, 2008 to find the only time he

:49:35.:49:42.

has won a main tour, tour level match on clay.

:49:43.:49:52.

He played challenges on the surfaces last year and lost to all six tour

:49:53.:49:56.

level matches he played in 2013. Another break for Britain. Murray

:49:57.:50:50.

ahead in the second set. Playing with complete control, you

:50:51.:50:55.

feel. He is in complete control of this

:50:56.:51:00.

situation and this match. Here come the brass band again. Did

:51:01.:51:08.

you ship them over for us, Lloyd? I thought they were there for the

:51:09.:51:12.

ild-up but they are playing all the hits and more at the changeovers, so

:51:13.:51:17.

well done to them. San Diego, what a city this is.

:51:18.:51:26.

The gas lamp quarter, is its historic heart. Right by the stadium

:51:27.:51:31.

here. When you go out at night it has a wonderful atmosphere. All of

:51:32.:51:39.

the old-fashioned gas lamps are ng the streets and music coming out of

:51:40.:51:50.

pretty much every bar. It's not a bad view.

:51:51.:51:58.

The other two are saying when will you lend us the binoculars? ! It is

:51:59.:52:07.

a strange stadium, the people at the far end, that is not a great view on

:52:08.:52:13.

the side. That is quite high up. The left side of the picture, part

:52:14.:52:20.

of the baseball stadium. The top tiers are not being used. There are

:52:21.:52:25.

temporary stands around the other three sides.

:52:26.:52:51.

Talking about the record for Young, probably on this surface any other,

:52:52.:52:58.

that it is the most difficult to build confidence on. Other courts

:52:59.:53:03.

you can serve, go for the shots but you have to orchestrate the points

:53:04.:53:07.

so differently on clay. You need years of experience to feelgood on

:53:08.:53:09.

it. Really, it is a completely different

:53:10.:53:29.

art, isn't it, Ross. Moving on clay is so important? Absolutely. It is

:53:30.:53:38.

all about patience on a clay-court. And Murray really learned that about

:53:39.:53:43.

three or four years ago. We did some training camps in Barcelona. It was

:53:44.:53:47.

getting back to basics. Don't go for the cheap shots. Build the points.

:53:48.:53:52.

Get the long rallies. Get your mind used to playing long rallies. Use

:53:53.:53:56.

the fitness, the spin and the court craft. He has done that superbly

:53:57.:53:59.

today. With all that in mind, Ross, it is a

:54:00.:54:30.

surface that should suit his game perfectly? It should. He was

:54:31.:54:36.

training on clay when he was 15 and 16 in Barcelona.

:54:37.:55:19.

And his game has improved huge amounts over the years. The last few

:55:20.:55:27.

years it has. He slides so well these days. He rarely loses to

:55:28.:55:33.

anyone other than Rafael Nadal or Roger Federer. He is so good. He is

:55:34.:55:39.

so good as dispatching the lower ranks.

:55:40.:55:42.

And I think his forehand is so good on play compared to what it used to

:55:43.:55:50.

be. -- on clay compared to what it used

:55:51.:55:52.

to be. There is Leon Smith, the British

:55:53.:56:10.

captain. It is his ninth time as the captain.

:56:11.:56:15.

He has a very good record so far. That's an example of the patience.

:56:16.:56:44.

He is just digging it back somehow. Making you play one more ball. It

:56:45.:56:49.

must be a nightmare over five sets as well. The surface, well, I still

:56:50.:56:54.

don't see how everyone is calling this a fast clay-court. It does not

:56:55.:56:58.

look fast at all. No, not at all. It looks slow and

:56:59.:57:04.

heavy. The conditions are heavy as it is not that warm. The court also

:57:05.:57:12.

looks heavy. Andy was saying it is faster than

:57:13.:57:28.

Roland Garos. That is a fast clay-court.

:57:29.:57:37.

Exactly. It looks like he is playing with

:57:38.:57:43.

tough thoughts in his head. He is very frustrated over the last couple

:57:44.:57:47.

of games. He feels like the match is getting away from him. He does not

:57:48.:57:50.

really know how to count ir. -- How to counter.

:57:51.:58:11.

What should young do to get back in the match? The problem is that he

:58:12.:58:15.

has not got the weapons, that is the problem. Obviously if you are Jim

:58:16.:58:20.

Courier, he is obviously going to exaggerate, to say that this is

:58:21.:58:24.

going to work. To do this a little more. Go for a few more balls on the

:58:25.:58:28.

forehand. Perhaps take chances. The problem is that the styles, the

:58:29.:58:32.

match-up does not work on the surface here against Andy Murray.

:58:33.:58:39.

Now what he is trying to do, it is under standable, he is trying to get

:58:40.:58:44.

more on the serve, the hand. That is what you do do. Unfortunately, that

:58:45.:58:48.

goes straight into the Murray trap here.

:58:49.:59:06.

Two breaks in this second set. The young American has had a lot to

:59:07.:59:48.

say for himself over the course of his career. He's chatting away again

:59:49.:59:53.

there. He should keep his ears open and list on the what the man to his

:59:54.:59:58.

left is going to say if he's to work his way back into this match. You

:59:59.:00:02.

can Tweet us direct to the commentary box. Thank you for

:00:03.:00:06.

getting in touch so far. A lot of you saying the clay looks dodgy. We

:00:07.:00:11.

have talked about the temporary nature of this. They wouldn't be the

:00:12.:00:15.

first, would they, to have problems laying down a temporary clay court?

:00:16.:00:23.

They do need to give it that time to make it play in an ideal manner.

:00:24.:00:34.

He's teaching Young a thing or so out here. Zach Johnson observes this

:00:35.:00:45.

is very slow - "Glad Young is off the mark. Was beginning to feel a

:00:46.:00:50.

little sorry for the guy." I don't think many are on the British bench

:00:51.:00:53.

though. Murray is very professional in this

:00:54.:01:03.

second set. Ar easy and making sure not to allow him back into the

:01:04.:01:07.

third. Not to give him any confidence in the way he's playing.

:01:08.:02:20.

It is a great shot on clay that one. Forehand there. More top spin. Just

:02:21.:02:27.

really got that ball up nice and high. Got himself back into the

:02:28.:02:29.

middle of the court. Murry being the smart person that he

:02:30.:02:46.

is Murray being the smart person that

:02:47.:03:33.

he is. Knowing the Davis Cup - a very

:03:34.:03:39.

experienced player. This This could make a difference if

:03:40.:03:44.

it goes to the end, if Murray continues to demolish him here.

:03:45.:04:03.

Just shaking hands. Saying, you can have this match, I am fed up.

:04:04.:04:09.

Incredible. Have a little look here. That's not

:04:10.:04:17.

bad. That's decent.

:04:18.:04:22.

What about this one? We don't get time to see it. It was decent. That

:04:23.:04:27.

was very good. It was the left-handed defence.

:04:28.:04:37.

It is one of your's. I was going to say one of Tim Henman. This is the

:04:38.:04:47.

previous point - oh, there we go. Look at this!

:04:48.:05:35.

A moment for locals to celebrate here.

:05:36.:05:45.

Getting games on board for Young now. To make him feel he is in this

:05:46.:05:53.

match, he's not really, but psychologically just get some on the

:05:54.:05:57.

board. It must be noticeable from the side of the court - the British

:05:58.:06:00.

support from the team, always standing up. There are a couple of

:06:01.:06:09.

vocal voices. Matt Little and Colin Fleming often sitting down. Not much

:06:10.:06:14.

noise. Not much support. I agree. I think it is a badly-spaced out crowd

:06:15.:06:21.

any way, even if it was full. It is a strange court. For them, your

:06:22.:06:25.

would have thought they would have known in advance. You want an

:06:26.:06:29.

intimate court. You want it packed full and people screaming out there

:06:30.:06:33.

for your team. At the moment, the atmosphere is not there. Obviously

:06:34.:06:37.

their man is getting thumped at if moment. There are too many empty

:06:38.:06:42.

spaces here. And playing the Davis Cup you feel

:06:43.:06:45.

as though, well you are playing for your country. It is not just

:06:46.:06:49.

yourself. On the tour he could be happy, not happy, he could sleep at

:06:50.:06:56.

night - but the Davis Cup, you have the whole team, the nation playing

:06:57.:06:58.

on your mind through every point. Fell for that one!

:06:59.:07:15.

It is not just the quality of the shot, it is the anticipation.

:07:16.:07:20.

He knew where this was going, didn't he? Picked it and goodbye!

:07:21.:07:31.

It is almost like Murray asked the question by leaning his forehand

:07:32.:07:37.

slightly short. Top four or five volleys on the

:07:38.:08:18.

tour, Andy Murray? He would be. It is great to see him using it more

:08:19.:08:21.

regularly the last 12 months. They have not played for an hour yet

:08:22.:08:44.

and here are two set points for Murray to give Great Britain.

:08:45.:08:57.

It may have just clipped the line. Yes, there it is. 2-0, Murray.

:08:58.:09:12.

An xem lent start to this tie for great -- excellent start for this

:09:13.:09:15.

tie for Great Britain. You still have to get the job done and Murray

:09:16.:09:20.

is doing just that. A reminder that Britain have not beaten the USA in

:09:21.:09:27.

the Davis Cup since 1935. What an opportunity for Britain to make some

:09:28.:09:31.

history. It is the elite level of the World Cup of tennis, if you

:09:32.:09:35.

like. It is where you want to be. Eight ties this weekend. Most of

:09:36.:09:40.

them have finished play for the day and will guide guide you there them.

:09:41.:09:57.

Tomas Berdych hitting back. The Czechs who have an amazing

:09:58.:10:03.

record. Japan against Canada, 1-1 after the opening day.

:10:04.:10:10.

Germany against Spain. Well, Spain do not have Nadal. They don't have

:10:11.:10:19.

Ferrer. They don't have Malgragro either. Germany taking advantage,

:10:20.:10:25.

leading 2-0 after the opening day of singles.

:10:26.:10:30.

A mouth-watering tie on paper, France against Australia. A couple

:10:31.:10:34.

of terrific finals around the turn of the sen issurery. Fraps in

:10:35.:10:40.

charge. Australia give -- -- of the century. France in charge.

:10:41.:11:29.

Wawrinka won the Australian Open, maybe he was disappointed at his

:11:30.:11:35.

lack of recent press coverage. Needs to get back into the limelight.

:11:36.:11:40.

Suddenly decided the last minute to play. That was a strange one. I

:11:41.:11:44.

would love to find out why he decided to.

:11:45.:11:49.

Let's face it, if they continue to play Davis Cup this year, they could

:11:50.:11:55.

easily win it. A gold medallist in the doubles as

:11:56.:11:58.

well. What a team! They could win it. I think Wawrinka in the last

:11:59.:12:02.

couple of years has been a little bit annoyed at Federer not playing.

:12:03.:12:07.

I think he felt the same way. I mean it is one thing that Roger

:12:08.:12:12.

Federer has not won is the Davis Cup. That is right. Serbia out.

:12:13.:12:20.

I like the way Novak Djokovic, he was exhausted after the tie and

:12:21.:12:29.

pulled out. Exhausted. He's only just started the year!

:12:30.:12:33.

Played no lead-up events before the Aussie. Needed a holiday.

:12:34.:12:39.

Wouldn't it be something if Britain could get through this and take

:12:40.:12:42.

their place in the quarter-finals. A long way to go, of course. We have

:12:43.:12:46.

coverage across the weekend. The doubles tomorrow. Reverse singles on

:12:47.:12:52.

Sunday. 8pm we'll be on the air tomorrow. A later start for the

:12:53.:12:57.

doubles match. Donald Young just returning after a

:12:58.:13:02.

bathroom break. Courier is not looking so cool as he

:13:03.:13:05.

was at the start of play. Kyle Edmund, his time will

:13:06.:13:42.

THE COMMENTATOR: . -- Kyle Edmund, his time will come.

:13:43.:13:44.

A talent for the future. You have trained with him, I know,

:13:45.:14:00.

Kyle Edmund, out in your Florida boot camp. He works well? He works

:14:01.:14:04.

well. Not only that, he has a big game. He hits the ball very hard.

:14:05.:14:11.

He actually plays most of his tennis on the red clay. Played challenges

:14:12.:14:20.

last year on the clay. We did our Miami training with Andy, karl and

:14:21.:14:24.

myself on the hard courts. It was good for him. Andy was saying it is

:14:25.:14:32.

good to be not too distant from the hard.

:14:33.:14:47.

A point there for Young. A good forehappened there. Nice and high.

:14:48.:14:56.

Gets that short ball there from Murray. Good instincts to get

:14:57.:15:02.

forward there. Likes to be closer to the net, mind you. Got away with it.

:15:03.:15:21.

One shot that Murray seem seems not to use so much is the drop shot. He

:15:22.:15:29.

used to use it so often. Every big point, it used to be Andy would hit

:15:30.:15:32.

the drop shot and often do it well. Young quoung would have felt --

:15:33.:15:52.

Young would have felt confident. A big occasion, on the big Centre

:15:53.:15:56.

Court. Would have used those memories

:15:57.:16:00.

pre-match and talked to Jim Courier about those memories and how he

:16:01.:16:04.

played well and how his tactics worked. It is a far different story

:16:05.:16:09.

so far. Murray really focussed on making sure he's 100% fit and ready

:16:10.:16:14.

mentally for this match. It is a bad surface match up for him

:16:15.:16:19.

too. On the hard courts where he can get a few cheaper winners here and

:16:20.:16:24.

there. He can explode a bit on that forehand and get behind Murray a

:16:25.:16:28.

couple of times here and there. On the clay Murray tracks everything

:16:29.:16:34.

down. So tough for him to get any penetration on these ground strokes.

:16:35.:16:56.

What was your debut match, John? Do you remember? I don't think any of

:16:57.:17:07.

us can - it's too far back! I'll look it up, as they say!

:17:08.:17:17.

Oh, dear, I have put p John Lloyd into the website and it says "Sorry,

:17:18.:17:27.

no results have been found! " It doesn't go back that far - is that

:17:28.:17:31.

what you are trying to say in a nice way.

:17:32.:17:36.

Young steps it up. Now is as good a time as any! That is what you were

:17:37.:17:41.

saying pre-match. Young has to go up there and swing. Get rid of the

:17:42.:17:46.

nerves, let lose. He has nothing to lose.

:17:47.:18:19.

As soon as young thought he'd got a glimpse of confidence, oh I am

:18:20.:18:27.

playing well again, Murray comes out with two well constructed point.

:18:28.:18:45.

Nothing can go wrong with it. Beautifully produced.

:18:46.:18:48.

I think that is a good play though from Young. I know he missed that.

:18:49.:18:52.

Every time he gets a second serve from Murray he has to be aggressive

:18:53.:18:56.

and go at him. That is the best chance he's got of going ahead in

:18:57.:18:59.

the rally - doing something. 1-1 in the third set. I think I have

:19:00.:19:18.

found out why you cannot remember your Davis Cup debut. Lost 5-0 to

:19:19.:19:25.

Egypt. It was a nightmare I was banished from my thought. You lost a

:19:26.:19:29.

couple of guys I have never heard of, out in Cairo in 1971. It was

:19:30.:19:35.

hot! Suffice to say your career went upwards from there.

:19:36.:19:59.

This one here, he has been doing so well with that during the match.

:20:00.:20:08.

That one went on the service line. A chance for Young to swing hard.

:20:09.:21:28.

That return is pure quality. A big first serve using the squash shot

:21:29.:21:35.

forehand and replacing it on the baseline.

:21:36.:22:41.

Two sets and a break. Andy Murray in firm charge in the opening of this

:22:42.:22:51.

Davis Cup tie. Quite a tradition, as Ross and John will know all too well

:22:52.:22:55.

s the laugh a minute official dinner, which you have to go to on

:22:56.:23:01.

the eve of the tie. A few pictures are swirling around the internet and

:23:02.:23:05.

papers. You may have seen it of the two teams lining up. Britain looking

:23:06.:23:10.

very smart in their suits. The question was posed by one of the

:23:11.:23:14.

newspapers - is this the scuffyiest team in sport? This is why - have a

:23:15.:23:18.

look at this! Now, that is Britain on the left.

:23:19.:23:24.

Now, come on America! You can do better than that! This is the

:23:25.:23:28.

official Davis Cup dinner we are talking about!

:23:29.:23:34.

What is all that about, Ross! ? You could teach them a lesson on

:23:35.:23:40.

elegance. Some in jeans. Hands everywhere.

:23:41.:23:44.

My, gosh clam GB team looking immense.

:23:45.:23:58.

It is surprising when their captain is so passionate about wearing a

:23:59.:24:04.

suit, he didn't get his players in them.

:24:05.:25:12.

Beautiful from Murray, taking it on nice and early. Sweet timing.

:25:13.:25:20.

Showing Young. He hit that ball, returned hard, but in the wrong

:25:21.:25:23.

direction. Into the Hything zone there of Murray's -- into the

:25:24.:25:30.

hitting zone there of Murray's. He's not thinking. He's panicking.

:25:31.:26:05.

At what point do you think Jim Courier could say, you are not going

:26:06.:26:12.

to win this match, let's get some good feelings for Sunday? It is not

:26:13.:26:17.

looking good. It could come down to a big match. That will be on

:26:18.:26:22.

Courier's mind. No question. He would not have expected Donald

:26:23.:26:27.

Young to have won this match, but he would have expected this to have

:26:28.:26:29.

been closer. Some great forehands there. That

:26:30.:27:30.

first from Murray was four feet behind the baseline and high.

:27:31.:27:34.

Managed to generate so much pace and put Young on the defensive and then

:27:35.:27:38.

follow in with it. Another big forehand.

:27:39.:27:54.

It is a far more positive attitude from Young.

:27:55.:28:06.

Serve out wide and then you crush the next ball - we haven't seen that

:28:07.:28:10.

from Young today. That is typical Murray. He said to

:28:11.:28:40.

me a few years ago, you p don't always have to hit winners in tennis

:28:41.:28:45.

because players make errors when they move. There is a prime example

:28:46.:28:50.

- always keeping your opponent on a string. A great tip that.

:28:51.:28:53.

I am going to write that down. Oh! Super speed reactions for

:28:54.:29:21.

Murray. That is OK. It's the Davis Cup. Take

:29:22.:30:27.

that. It was going wide, wasn't it? I

:30:28.:30:31.

think that the tape brought it back in.

:30:32.:30:32.

Sorry, mate. Not your day! Gutsy play from the American player.

:30:33.:31:42.

He needed that. Much better from Donald Young

:31:43.:31:46.

towards the end of that game. Well played!

:31:47.:32:05.

There Donald Young was laughing and smiling a bit. A little bit of

:32:06.:32:12.

encouragement. You can see the way that Jim Courier reacted when he won

:32:13.:32:15.

that game. He is still down, but anything now to just give him a

:32:16.:32:20.

little bit of positive news out here.

:32:21.:32:29.

What was it like playing that Davis Cup final, John, in 1978? You played

:32:30.:32:37.

John McEnroe, didn't you? That was not a pleasant memory. He was a

:32:38.:32:43.

little too good to put it mildly. When I played it was about 80

:32:44.:32:49.

degrees. By the time we finished a match, it was about 3.30pm, 4.00pm,

:32:50.:32:56.

when the sun went down over the mountains, it was suddenly by 6.00pm

:32:57.:33:03.

freezing cold. People were wearing fur coats, you were allowed to in

:33:04.:33:09.

those days, and blankets and it went on in about midnight. A great

:33:10.:33:13.

atmosphere but they were a bit too good for us that day.

:33:14.:33:19.

Do you think we will see the day when Britain plays the final of the

:33:20.:33:25.

Davis Cup again? If Murray plays. You can, almost against any team,

:33:26.:33:30.

apart from Spain away, or maybe Serbia away on clay, perhaps, Murray

:33:31.:33:36.

can going to win on two singles. You only have to win one more match and

:33:37.:33:41.

you win the tie. We have great doubles. Andy would be top five in

:33:42.:33:57.

the world, if he played. So why not? Did you used to play all games? I

:33:58.:34:04.

played it at some times. It was tough, but sometimes you just did

:34:05.:34:39.

it. That was definitely long. Donald

:34:40.:34:43.

Young has not seen this sort of situation. Two break points on the

:34:44.:34:47.

Murray serve. The first of the match. He is looking enthused, isn't

:34:48.:35:30.

he? I thought he was going to lose that point with the drop-shot. Young

:35:31.:35:35.

was under it quickly. He anticipated it this one. That was unbelievable.

:35:36.:35:40.

A half volley lob. Whatever you call that. A half ground stroke lob.

:35:41.:35:48.

He obviously feels there has not been enough tension in this match!

:35:49.:36:23.

So close. Yeah, it looked good when it pinged

:36:24.:36:30.

off Young's racket. Oh, he has given it. He scuffed the mark with his

:36:31.:36:34.

shoe. The international sign of it is in.

:36:35.:36:38.

What a return that was. A heck of a serve from Murray.

:36:39.:37:29.

That was definitely the best passage of tennis from Young in the last two

:37:30.:37:44.

or three games. He can play with a bit of freedom.

:37:45.:38:22.

He is more loose. Was it a wrong-footing tactic that

:38:23.:38:27.

on clay? Absolutely. Because of the movement, you are sliding one way,

:38:28.:38:31.

you have to move back the other way. The best clay-court players know

:38:32.:38:36.

when to use the back behind wrong-footing shot.

:38:37.:38:52.

Andy Murray will be desperate to put this game to bed.

:38:53.:39:01.

He was looking for a quick-fix on the last forehand. He knows if he

:39:02.:39:06.

can play solid for a couple of more games, he should be OK.

:39:07.:39:17.

A big serve. There is a heavy atmosphere out there.

:39:18.:39:19.

He is cranking it up. Young had a couple of break points

:39:20.:39:55.

but still could not get it done. Two games away now from putting

:39:56.:40:11.

Britain in front in this tie. James Ward against Sam Querrey to

:40:12.:40:17.

follow. Querrey is the USA number one in the tie, after John Isner

:40:18.:40:23.

pulled out. Isner has had some terrible trouble

:40:24.:40:29.

lately, Ross? He has had knee trouble. This time ankle trouble. He

:40:30.:40:37.

picked up the injury in Perth at the Hopman Cup. He said he was in pain

:40:38.:40:43.

in the match. He had to pull out of the first-round match of the

:40:44.:40:47.

Australian Open, having lost the first two sets.

:40:48.:40:50.

And you actually saw him hobble on to the court for that match, didn't

:40:51.:40:55.

you? I did. And off the court. I was in the gym that you have to walk

:40:56.:40:59.

past as you walk back from the outside court. He could hardly walk.

:41:00.:41:04.

I looked at my coach, on the bench, I thought, there was no way he would

:41:05.:41:11.

be ready next week. Even though he won that title in

:41:12.:41:15.

Auckland, you have to wonder why he played that tournament? So often,

:41:16.:41:21.

that is actually John Isner's girlfriend on the left. Often we see

:41:22.:41:26.

a top player. He is a top player. He is name is always in the running for

:41:27.:41:31.

the hard core events, dangerous opponent. He miss the week before.

:41:32.:41:35.

So if you make the final of Auckland, that Isner did, you play

:41:36.:41:43.

on the Sunday. If you have a dodgy ankle that means

:41:44.:41:48.

trouble. Trouble here for Donald Young. A sixth double fault.

:41:49.:42:02.

This really couldn't have gone much better for Andy Murray.

:42:03.:42:33.

Andy Murray has done well here. He is looking in really good shape.

:42:34.:43:23.

He plays so well. He could be a top five doubles player without a

:43:24.:43:27.

question. Well Donald Young hangs on. At least

:43:28.:43:48.

he has not capitulated in the third set. If you look at his career

:43:49.:43:52.

record it is not the best at suggesting he has the stomach for a

:43:53.:43:57.

fight, let's put it that way. There are some things in tennis you

:43:58.:44:02.

don't look so deep into, but playing in a five-set match, you want to

:44:03.:44:09.

know the statistics. If you go two sets up against Young, how does he

:44:10.:44:14.

react? It fills you with confidence to start strong. Murray does not

:44:15.:44:18.

need anymore confidence, having played away in the USA but he knows

:44:19.:44:23.

this for sure. And John, as captain of the Davis

:44:24.:44:27.

Cup team, I suppose you cannot help but look ahead. The tie could come

:44:28.:44:32.

down to the fifth and the final rubber, that would involve Donald

:44:33.:44:37.

Young, if it came to it. So if you are in Leon Smith's shoes, you are

:44:38.:44:43.

feeling positive? You are feeling very happy right now. Absolutely.

:44:44.:44:49.

That's the format of the World Group this year.

:44:50.:44:51.

It is simple, the Davis Cup when you look at it at the World Group there.

:44:52.:45:02.

It is not normally one team you expect can make their way through.

:45:03.:45:09.

Canadian last year, Kazakhstan in the previous years. It is not always

:45:10.:45:29.

the big teams. Oh! Well, he almost got away with

:45:30.:45:36.

that, Young. The first approach shot was suicidal on the first one. He

:45:37.:45:39.

somehow got away with it. This one here, he was way too far to come

:45:40.:45:45.

back in. He was hitting a half volley from there.

:45:46.:45:50.

He actually flicked a good shot. Murray had to hit a heck of a

:45:51.:45:52.

passing shot to get away with that. Young has more confidence. He is

:45:53.:47:00.

trusting his forehand. If he doesn't hit the forehand, he is limited. As

:47:01.:47:05.

you said, he is one-dimensional, but when he does release, he has some

:47:06.:47:08.

pop. That's the forehand we were talking

:47:09.:47:51.

about. So many times in the past, Murray chose the backhand. Now he is

:47:52.:47:55.

explosive anywhere on the court. One new edition to the Andy Murray

:47:56.:48:31.

schedule. Staying on to play on clay in Mexico.

:48:32.:48:34.

It has been changed this year for the first time. They changed it to

:48:35.:48:39.

get more players like Andy Murray. There you go.

:48:40.:48:59.

Just a brilliant point. He is manoeuvring Young all over the

:49:00.:49:31.

place. He is so accurate. That is difficult. You are sliding

:49:32.:49:36.

one way, the ball is passing you on the other side.

:49:37.:49:43.

Well, Andy Murray, you could fancy on any softwares. Two points from

:49:44.:49:45.

victory. A beautiful sequence. The forehands

:49:46.:50:09.

from Andy Murray. To bring up match point.

:50:10.:50:26.

That will do! He played one of those earlier in the match, didn't he?

:50:27.:50:34.

That really could not have gone better for Andy Murray. 6-1, 6-2,

:50:35.:50:42.

6-3. A expensive demolition of Donald Young. With el, he was gutsy

:50:43.:50:47.

in the third set. He did not let Andy Murray run away with it, but

:50:48.:50:53.

Murray, showed his class out there. So professional. The way he came up

:50:54.:50:57.

against a Davis Cup rookie. He did not allow him time to settle. It was

:50:58.:51:02.

not like he would feel his way in. It was business from the first point

:51:03.:51:08.

to try to get through to Donald Young here. To put doubts in his

:51:09.:51:12.

mind. He is smiling now. He got through the match, but his

:51:13.:51:19.

confidence will have been dented by this. Andy Murray would, frankly,

:51:20.:51:28.

apart from doing the rubber, if it goes to the rubber, it would have

:51:29.:51:34.

knocked the stuffing out of Donald Young's confidence.

:51:35.:51:37.

Interesting to see Jim Courier to crack a smile. That was smart. To

:51:38.:51:42.

make him feel he is still a part of the team. Not to worry about that.

:51:43.:51:46.

That he has a big role to play on Sunday. Let's get over it and look

:51:47.:51:53.

ahead. Now he is off to read the news. That is what he looks like.

:51:54.:51:59.

Straight sets win for Andy Murray. That will delight many of the

:52:00.:52:02.

British fans who have travelled to San Diego. Just what they wanted. An

:52:03.:52:09.

hour-and-a-half of brilliance from Andy Murray. Certainly silencing the

:52:10.:52:14.

American fans and demoralising Donald Young. He has two days to

:52:15.:52:18.

think about a crucial singles match on Sunday? Exactly. What a start for

:52:19.:52:24.

Great Britain. For Andy Murray. It is what Leon Smith would have wanted

:52:25.:52:28.

to. Have a run out. To have a tester but to be comfortable. To be

:52:29.:52:34.

convincing. To demoralise and abolish all confidence from the

:52:35.:52:37.

American player. And he will have to play again as the Americans selected

:52:38.:52:43.

two singles and two doubles players. Yes, you worry. That is the danger

:52:44.:52:48.

with two doubles players. If there injury, it can work against you. But

:52:49.:52:55.

he got through it. For Andy, he came out so business-like. For the first

:52:56.:53:00.

two games he dictated the match? He played a superb clay-court tennis

:53:01.:53:05.

match. Constructing the points. Attacking, moving well. You never

:53:06.:53:11.

know when you have not played clay-court tennis. Andy only played

:53:12.:53:14.

one match on clay since last year, the two matches, sorry. So not much

:53:15.:53:21.

clay-court tennis. Just five days of practise. Yet look how he is moving.

:53:22.:53:26.

Playing so well. And when the rallies are extended he is in

:53:27.:53:31.

control. Controlling the middle of the court. And when defending he is

:53:32.:53:35.

moving well. Against players like young Querrey, he plays superior,

:53:36.:53:41.

and Young, he played so well today. And you know how much the back has

:53:42.:53:45.

been an issue for Andy Murray. How difficult the year has been for him.

:53:46.:53:48.

It must have been a worry going back on to the clay courts? It was. That

:53:49.:53:54.

is what the American team were hoping. That it was an issue, the

:53:55.:53:59.

back. It was not a guarantee that Andy Murray would be fit. He started

:54:00.:54:03.

slowly. Training on the hard court so it was better for the back.

:54:04.:54:08.

Training, hoping that he would be there in San Diego but we shall see,

:54:09.:54:12.

but Australia was key. Getting through it safely. Playing a tough

:54:13.:54:16.

match against Roger Federer. Now he is here. Looking as good as new.

:54:17.:54:23.

Moving well. Some tension but the physios will work hard tonight. That

:54:24.:54:27.

is for sure. He probably spends more time getting

:54:28.:54:31.

treatment after, than being on court.

:54:32.:54:32.

He does. But a great start. Let's show you

:54:33.:54:39.

some of the points that Andy delivered early on.

:54:40.:54:43.

We wanted him to make a great start, but boy, not giving Young any time

:54:44.:54:48.

to even think about a game plan. He is so experienced on the Davis

:54:49.:54:54.

Cup situation, he knew the value of putting Young down early on. We

:54:55.:55:00.

talked that when the rallies go deep, Andy Murray uses his forehand

:55:01.:55:05.

90% of the time. That is when you know that he is in for a tough day

:55:06.:55:09.

for his opponent. He controlled the middle of the court well.

:55:10.:55:12.

Anticipation for Andy Murray is the key to him, but he has looked in

:55:13.:55:17.

great form. He played very well. You wonder how the first couple of sets

:55:18.:55:20.

of a match will be, when you have nod played on a surface, but the

:55:21.:55:26.

whole court game was stunning today and more to look forward to in the

:55:27.:55:29.

next few days. What a point this was. The break

:55:30.:55:35.

point. The dop-shot. You think, what is going to happen now? He was

:55:36.:55:38.

playing with him. It is a sign of his class. When

:55:39.:55:43.

Young played better, Andy was able to respond. He played the match in

:55:44.:55:48.

second or third gear. Here Young started to play better. Andy Murray

:55:49.:55:53.

flipped into another gear. Stepping up again. He was really, really up

:55:54.:55:59.

for the snatch. He gave Young no chance to come back.

:56:00.:56:03.

The perfect start for Great Britain. Let's hear from Andy. He is talking

:56:04.:56:06.

to Russell. Very, very well played. A fabulous

:56:07.:56:12.

start for you, and a dream start for Great Britain? It is important to

:56:13.:56:17.

get off to a good start. The two singles matches, I am going in as

:56:18.:56:21.

favourite, Sam is against James. So it puts the pressure on Sam a lot to

:56:22.:56:26.

play a good match. James, hopefully, he can play a little bit more

:56:27.:56:32.

freely. It was a good start. There have been concerns about the

:56:33.:56:36.

court in the build-up. Seeming slower than anticipated. How did you

:56:37.:56:41.

find it? Was it easy to keep your footing? It is slippy. Tough to

:56:42.:56:45.

change the directions, but the conditions, it has been raining in

:56:46.:56:49.

the evening. It will is cold. There is a lot of cloud cover. So the

:56:50.:56:52.

court will play slower because of that. It is a little more damp. The

:56:53.:56:58.

first few days we were here, the sun was out. It was dry. The court was

:56:59.:57:04.

uncomfortable to move on. So the conditions like this help it.

:57:05.:57:08.

I know you will chat with the captain but is your expectation to

:57:09.:57:13.

play the doubles with Colin Fleming tomorrow? We will have to see. The

:57:14.:57:18.

captain, the team will be involved in the discussion. To see the best

:57:19.:57:23.

way forward. A little depends on the next match as well. That can

:57:24.:57:27.

influence things. So we will have to wait and see.

:57:28.:57:30.

A bit of pressure on Sam Querrey. James Ward has shown in Davis Cup

:57:31.:57:35.

over the last three or four years he can be a feisty competitor? Yeah.

:57:36.:57:40.

Like I say, a lot of the times he goes into the matches as the

:57:41.:57:46.

underdog. He has played some big matches in the Davis Cup. So

:57:47.:57:50.

hopefully, he has practised well in the last couple of days. I hope he

:57:51.:57:54.

puts on a good performance. A great start, Andy. Go and join the

:57:55.:57:58.

team. Gosh, it does not even look like he

:57:59.:58:05.

has had a warm-up. He said cold, he should be here. It is nice

:58:06.:58:12.

conditions in some way, but what a great start. Talking to Ross there.

:58:13.:58:24.

He did not put a foot wrong. Well, he gets the balls, after a

:58:25.:58:30.

while Donald Young ran out of ideas. He did not know what to do. It was a

:58:31.:58:35.

crushing performance by Andy Murray. He got in and did not let him get

:58:36.:58:41.

ahead. It must have been crushing for Donald Young in the first Davis

:58:42.:58:44.

Cup rubber. You know what it is like being in

:58:45.:58:48.

the team competition. It is the team spirit. He has given the team the

:58:49.:58:53.

perfect start? Absolutely. And James Ward, the number one player, he has

:58:54.:58:57.

gone out and won three straight sets. Now this is almost a free

:58:58.:59:01.

match. Leon Smith at the start, in the back of his mind, he did not

:59:02.:59:07.

think that James Ward would beat Sam Querrey. Obviously he has a chance

:59:08.:59:11.

but this is a bonus match. James Ward is a good Davis Cup player. A

:59:12.:59:16.

good record. No reason he can't take on Sam Querrey. Two big fellows. Sam

:59:17.:59:22.

Querrey will be nervous, if he loses the match the tie is over. The

:59:23.:59:26.

pressure switches. This is what makes the Davis Cup fun.

:59:27.:59:31.

I always wanted to play first in the teem event. I did not like the wait

:59:32.:59:36.

in the locker room. How is James as a competitor? He will be fine. He is

:59:37.:59:41.

experienced. It is tougher for Sam Querrey. He has just watched his

:59:42.:59:47.

fellow countryman take a defeat. Now he is playing against a guy he knows

:59:48.:59:51.

is dangerous. James Ward is a dangerous player with a good Davis

:59:52.:59:54.

Cup record. James has beaten him in the past. So a tough match for Sam

:59:55.:59:59.

Querrey now. He will have to use his experience to start well. To lift

:00:00.:00:03.

the crowd back up. To lift the team-mates back up. Querrey will

:00:04.:00:13.

have to work harder. Against a pairing like Andy Murray and Young,

:00:14.:00:18.

he may have expected more but for Sam Querrey, it is a must-win match

:00:19.:00:22.

otherwise the tie is over. It will be hard for Jim Courier to

:00:23.:00:28.

build Donald Young up again. He was demolished out on court that is hard

:00:29.:00:33.

to take? That is when Jim Courier, if it comes to the fifth, that is

:00:34.:00:36.

where he earns his money. He will tell you are playing someone

:00:37.:00:40.

slightly different if it comes to the fifth, but the confidence will

:00:41.:00:45.

have been dented after that performance. Andy Murray played

:00:46.:00:47.

great but Donald Young did not play well. He was nervous. Not moving

:00:48.:00:52.

well. The game plan was not good. They will have to do the chatting to

:00:53.:01:05.

get him back up again. It hasn't happened, but there is

:01:06.:01:10.

immense pressure on those sort of players when you get it so young. We

:01:11.:01:14.

have seen it so many, many times before. It didn't happen for him. He

:01:15.:01:21.

is very enclosed. His mother, who coaches him, does not let him mingle

:01:22.:01:25.

with many players. In his mind he's very much an outsider. Bursting into

:01:26.:01:30.

this big tie in the world group - it was a bit much for him in this

:01:31.:01:35.

opening match. That is one reason he started so poorly. It would have

:01:36.:01:39.

been tough. Having beaten Murray before, he would have had confidence

:01:40.:01:43.

going into the match. The whole atmosphere seemed to get too much.

:01:44.:01:48.

It was not that noisy there. It was not too overbearing. He seemed to

:01:49.:01:52.

struggle out there. That is more positive news for the British camp

:01:53.:01:57.

and forward Ward, who will not look forward to Sunday because he has a

:01:58.:02:00.

big match now. Nothing to be scared of this weekend. He has the feel

:02:01.:02:05.

against Young. Leon Smith will know that. He is very good Leon Smith and

:02:06.:02:11.

has a good relationship with James Ward. All looking good so far for

:02:12.:02:17.

the Brits. Ward will be ready. He's, as Andy said, practiced all week. I

:02:18.:02:22.

have heard that news from the camp - practiced superbly all week. It is

:02:23.:02:27.

tough when you play your first Davis Cup event. When you hear - we didn't

:02:28.:02:32.

hear it very often - going to the United States, but when you are

:02:33.:02:37.

representing a country that is not game young - it is a different

:02:38.:02:41.

experiencing. There's nothing like it. I still think the Davis Cup,

:02:42.:02:46.

particularly to win a fifth rub ser the toughest thing in sport, other

:02:47.:02:51.

-- fifth rubber is the toughest thing in sport, other than... It is

:02:52.:02:58.

pretty nasty it is fun to watch, but not to play it. Talking of fun,

:02:59.:03:02.

we'll have some fun here because your best mate Andy Murray, he was

:03:03.:03:08.

on social media, he was replying to a tweet, where he hinted that he and

:03:09.:03:14.

his girlfriend may get married after Wimbledon. This is what he had to

:03:15.:03:19.

say after that. We'll have to wait and see. Maybe in the next couple of

:03:20.:03:24.

years. I hope that people now I would not announce when I am getting

:03:25.:03:30.

engaged or getting married on Twitter or on TV. Kim might be the

:03:31.:03:36.

first to know? And my family would know first. I am not sure I would be

:03:37.:03:41.

releasing it to the press - that's for sure. Oh, an awkward moment! You

:03:42.:03:48.

cannot have a joke on Twitter, can you? It reminds me of a couple of

:03:49.:03:53.

years ago, we were at dinner having a pizza. We announced I would be his

:03:54.:03:59.

next coach. Everyone was jumping on. That as if I, a 24-year-old person,

:04:00.:04:04.

a friend of his, would be coaching the world number four. Everyone

:04:05.:04:09.

brought that as well! I am sure they will get married very soon. They are

:04:10.:04:14.

a great couple. You would know better than anyone. Kim is a great

:04:15.:04:19.

girl and it will happen. I am not sure that Twitter would know before

:04:20.:04:24.

Kim. Exactly. They are not rushing into it, are they? They are very

:04:25.:04:29.

happy. They have been together how long? Eight years? They are very

:04:30.:04:35.

happy. They have the two dogs, as you saw when you did the

:04:36.:04:38.

documentary. It will happen in future - that's for sure. Andy

:04:39.:04:44.

enjoys Twitter, doesn't he? In future we have to know he is often

:04:45.:04:50.

sarcastic. He's learnt a lesson - that is for sure! A light moment as

:04:51.:04:55.

well, another Davis Cup match taking place is Switzerland, they are

:04:56.:05:01.

taking on Serbia. Wawrinka and Federer made a late

:05:02.:05:05.

decision to turn up. A very funny moment. They are on the right of the

:05:06.:05:12.

photo here. Oh, sorry, Stan, you may have won the Australian Open, but

:05:13.:05:16.

that is one way to stop you being the number one! Elbowed him in the

:05:17.:05:22.

eye. Took him down a level! It is interesting. Roger isn't even the

:05:23.:05:27.

number one Swiss right now. What a team! I am so glad he's playing the

:05:28.:05:31.

match. If he commits they could win the Davis Cup. Is there anything

:05:32.:05:35.

else that Roger Federer has not won, other than the Davis Cup? Maybe a

:05:36.:05:41.

gold medal and the singles - why not go for it Has not played since 2012.

:05:42.:05:47.

Had to be encouraged to play. He has a great relationship with his

:05:48.:05:50.

captain who travels with him a lot of the time. I was fascinated to see

:05:51.:05:55.

his name pop up on the list and Djokovic drop out. It is interesting

:05:56.:06:00.

to see why he is playing this match. It is almost he wants to play with

:06:01.:06:04.

Wawrinka. Yes, he might want to win. They will win any way without

:06:05.:06:09.

Federer. I think he may want to stay with Stan and not lose too much of

:06:10.:06:13.

the bragging rights or the media coverage maybe. You were right

:06:14.:06:17.

talking about that in commentary. Roger will make the news when he is

:06:18.:06:21.

there. Let's look at the world group draw. That match between Switzerland

:06:22.:06:26.

and Serbia, that is at the bottom. Serbia, no Djokovic.

:06:27.:06:32.

At the top, the holders, the Czech Republic - 1-1 in their match. We

:06:33.:06:36.

will keep a close eye on Argentina against Italy. The winner of this

:06:37.:06:40.

match will face Argentina at home, Italy away. That will be in April.

:06:41.:06:44.

The losers play in September. Kazakhstan are two up. It is

:06:45.:06:49.

interesting that Great Britain are the lowest rank team - 18. It is all

:06:50.:06:54.

done on former matches. Of course Andy has not played all of them, I

:06:55.:06:59.

guess. No, he has not played that many in the past. They did well

:07:00.:07:04.

without him. Evans did well. Edmund was ready the last, playing

:07:05.:07:10.

well. The Spanish - no Nadal, no Ferrer. They are play playing - so a

:07:11.:07:17.

tough start in charge. Looking back to Andy, he's the forefront of the

:07:18.:07:22.

British team. A very strong player and started us off so well there.

:07:23.:07:25.

You were his hitting partner, wornt you, down at thes of -- wrpt you,

:07:26.:07:32.

down at the -- weren't you, down at the Aussie? I made sure he was

:07:33.:07:38.

covered. I wanted to take Lendl's place. He does not hit it well these

:07:39.:07:43.

days. I want you to say that to his face one day! He's often asking me

:07:44.:07:49.

to hit with him. I wonder why he doesn't hit more. We joke about who

:07:50.:07:55.

would win on the singles court. Lendl always say, give me a few

:07:56.:07:59.

weeks on the clay and then we'll have a match. He wants to shed the

:08:00.:08:06.

weight a little bit. He hits a sweet ball. What is great to see when he's

:08:07.:08:10.

around is how he controls Murray's sessions. He is the dominant force.

:08:11.:08:14.

In the past Andy says what he wants to do, but p Lendl commands how Andy

:08:15.:08:22.

should -- but Lendl commands how Andy should play.

:08:23.:08:28.

He thought he would beat him easily. Lendl is such a competitor. I saw

:08:29.:08:34.

video footage. Every day, he pretty much plays golf. Every day, half an

:08:35.:08:40.

hour straight. In Miami, when we were training a couple of months ago

:08:41.:08:46.

with Murray - have you ever used the vertical climber. Half an hour

:08:47.:08:49.

straight every day, which is what he does. He's in some serious shape. I

:08:50.:08:56.

never saw him when he was playing. I heard he trained very hard. He has

:08:57.:09:00.

that mind over matter sense in his mind. Jez is in good shape as well

:09:01.:09:05.

and often takes the sessions with us and trains hard. A great effort and

:09:06.:09:12.

great player. Why did you look at John and say, do you use the

:09:13.:09:18.

climber? The cross trainer is as far as I'll go. That is for sure! We

:09:19.:09:23.

have plenty coming up over the weekend. Plenty of sport on the BBC.

:09:24.:09:27.

Of course we have James Ward coming up later on. We'll be back tomorrow

:09:28.:09:31.

for the all-important doubles. We hope that Andy Murray will be

:09:32.:09:36.

playing in that up against the Bryan brothers. That will be crucial. We

:09:37.:09:41.

start live at 8pm. Over on BBC Two, if it continues, from 11pm. I say it

:09:42.:09:46.

is James Ward coming up. That is what we are staying for. Football

:09:47.:09:51.

Focus tomorrow, that is live from mid-day on BBC One. Live from

:09:52.:09:56.

Goodison Park. And then we have a big weekend of rugby coming up.

:09:57.:10:46.

February kicks off tomorrow and so does the Six Nations. All the

:10:47.:10:50.

matches on Saturday. The holders, Wales, against Italy at 2pm. Then

:10:51.:10:56.

live from Paris, it is France against England. What a mouth

:10:57.:11:01.

watering Six Nations opener that is. We'll be there on Sunday for Ireland

:11:02.:11:06.

against Scotland. The first weekend of the Six Nations gets under way.

:11:07.:11:10.

That is all on BBC One. Back to this match and of course

:11:11.:11:15.

plenty of pressure on the players but also on the captain, Leon Smith.

:11:16.:11:21.

A great record out of the eight matches he's been in charge since

:11:22.:11:25.

2010. He's won seven of them. Let's hear from him. We have two

:11:26.:11:30.

established players out with Andy. We've had a great of -- group of

:11:31.:11:35.

players with James Ward and Evans, who have done well for us in the

:11:36.:11:40.

Davis Cup and beaten highly-ranked players. We had Kyle Edmund, brought

:11:41.:11:44.

into the team, because he's an up and coming player. He has a very

:11:45.:11:48.

bright future in tennis. Having got everyone together, looking at the

:11:49.:11:52.

court, the way it is playing and in the Davis Cup looking at the

:11:53.:11:56.

match-ups as well, I think that is what James got the slight nod over

:11:57.:12:03.

Kyle, over the nod-ups. I was looking forward to seeing Kyle

:12:04.:12:08.

Edmund play. When you look at the court, that it is quicker. He

:12:09.:12:12.

expected it to be a slower clay court. Kyle has won a couple of

:12:13.:12:18.

tournaments in America. He has gone for the experience. I think it was

:12:19.:12:26.

more the fact that when Isner pulled out. If Isner had played, I think he

:12:27.:12:31.

would have put Kyle Edmund in. Logically speaking, he would have

:12:32.:12:34.

gone into this match if Isner was playing thinking he would have to

:12:35.:12:39.

win. The two singles with Andy Murray and the doubles. The number

:12:40.:12:42.

two was probably going to lose. Once Donald Young came in, now his

:12:43.:12:46.

thought changes. He thinks they can win that match and James Ward has

:12:47.:12:50.

had experience in the Davis Cup. Kyle Edmund, as much as he is

:12:51.:12:54.

promising, we don't know how he'll react. You have to give James Ward a

:12:55.:12:57.

chance because he has a good record. It was the right decision he made.

:12:58.:13:02.

Absolutely right. We saw with Donald Young, he was intimidated. Let's

:13:03.:13:07.

talk about James and his gutsiness. He showed that in Russia. He was on

:13:08.:13:12.

court for seven hours for his two singles. He played superbly in

:13:13.:13:18.

Coventry. 32 aces in this match against the player who is now, six

:13:19.:13:22.

months later, the top 30 of the world. A fantastic win forward Ward.

:13:23.:13:28.

Had some big wins in the past and really led the team. Smith, without

:13:29.:13:33.

Andy Murray, so fantastic Davis Cup player award. Really raised his game

:13:34.:13:37.

well. Has so much passion for the sport when it comes to the Davis

:13:38.:13:42.

Cup. He was going to come to actually Miami to train with us. He

:13:43.:13:46.

went to Australia to prepare for the Australian Open. Put in a good

:13:47.:13:51.

preseason - playing well again. And the match-ups, as John said, works

:13:52.:13:58.

well. Strong backhand likes to play players like Querrey. The match-ups

:13:59.:14:03.

are key. A great decision and helped a lot for Smith, once Isner pulled

:14:04.:14:07.

out. It is interesting, you talk about the fitness level and how he

:14:08.:14:11.

is working harder because the likes of Murray - all of them, Nadal, they

:14:12.:14:18.

set such a high bar of fitness getting through five sets. Seven

:14:19.:14:21.

hours on court. He had to go to hospital. He was on a drip for a few

:14:22.:14:26.

hours because he was giving so much. Well, he really works hard in the

:14:27.:14:31.

Davis Cup. When Andy Murray is in the Davis Cup matches, when someone

:14:32.:14:38.

like Ward and Edmund, see the professionalism that Andy Murray

:14:39.:14:40.

brings to the tame r table and his fitness -- to the table and his

:14:41.:14:45.

fitness levels, James Ward, he is young enough, he has to realise you

:14:46.:14:49.

keep it up to the height if you want to get into that top 100. The Davis

:14:50.:14:54.

Cup has always been that springboard for him to do well afterwards. If he

:14:55.:14:59.

can win this or the tie, can you imagine what it would do for his

:15:00.:15:04.

confidence? The relationship between Murray and Ward has been good. Now

:15:05.:15:08.

they are close and practicing together, spending time together,

:15:09.:15:12.

inviting him to come to Miami to train. It is blossoming in terms of

:15:13.:15:17.

him trying to help him. It is rubbing off on James. James is

:15:18.:15:22.

training hard. He is working hard, playing his best tennis of his life.

:15:23.:15:26.

He had a tough match, but playing better. It is because he's strong.

:15:27.:15:30.

He is working a new coach in Australia. It is looking good for

:15:31.:15:35.

James. To put it into a Davis Cup situation, we will see shortly.

:15:36.:15:40.

Hopefully it will proof to be success -- prove to be successful

:15:41.:15:44.

for GB. Can he continue it for the other parts of the year? Maybe he

:15:45.:15:48.

has to look at this Davis Cup as being in the World Cup and he was

:15:49.:15:53.

helping Great Britain get there. This is a huge step for him if he

:15:54.:15:58.

can get on Andy Murray's coat-tails to take himself up with the

:15:59.:16:02.

publicity and being out in big-court situations. Absolutely. James over

:16:03.:16:07.

the years he's been sort of strange in the way he likes to practise. He

:16:08.:16:11.

likes to do it a certain way. He wasn't a great listener with

:16:12.:16:15.

coaches. When you have Andy Murray in the Davis Cup, I think that will

:16:16.:16:19.

rub off. You have got to be open to different things. You have got to

:16:20.:16:23.

change your game. You cannot just do one way of training. With Ward, he

:16:24.:16:29.

needs to do something different, be more versatile to go up the ladder.

:16:30.:16:33.

He can do it though. He has done it as far as beating Sam Querrey. He

:16:34.:16:37.

did it at Queens a few years ago. Not on the main court, on the

:16:38.:16:43.

outside court, but boy, 6-4 in the third. A big server and that is a

:16:44.:16:49.

scalp because Sam had won the tournament at Queens. A couple over

:16:50.:16:53.

big players. Big serves and well James is on court against Sam again.

:16:54.:16:58.

Let's hear his thoughts on the Davis Cup.

:16:59.:17:02.

You played a lot of Davis Cup in ties in the past when you have not

:17:03.:17:07.

played in such glamorous surroundings r, how is it for you to

:17:08.:17:12.

be in the competition for real? Everyone has worked here so hard. I

:17:13.:17:16.

have been here since Leon started, back in Eastbourne, where it was not

:17:17.:17:21.

so glamorous a venue. We have worked hard for four years. It will be nice

:17:22.:17:24.

to get the rewards for the hard work we have gone through in the last few

:17:25.:17:28.

years. You know, it doesn't matter where it happened or whatever -

:17:29.:17:32.

having a win against a player you come in with a psychological

:17:33.:17:36.

advantage, don't you? We said that with Young against Murray. He would

:17:37.:17:40.

have been feeling better. It is different when you play against Andy

:17:41.:17:44.

Murray. In this situation Ward will feel confident. He will think,

:17:45.:17:48.

strong memories, her has beaten good players, the match-up works well.

:17:49.:17:53.

There is a clear game style in which Leon Smith would put forward.

:17:54.:17:57.

They do video analysis. It is something I was involved in during

:17:58.:18:01.

the last two ties. You see footage of what has been success until the

:18:02.:18:06.

past. You reminisce about it. Ward will have that in his mind and he

:18:07.:18:13.

will be ready to play. It will feel good going out there and following

:18:14.:18:17.

Andy Murray after that great win he's just had. He will feel

:18:18.:18:21.

confident. Leon Smith will be relaxed. They are good together on

:18:22.:18:24.

the court. They feel very confident. It will be interesting seeing that

:18:25.:18:28.

and the players are on court. The captain is giving them their pep

:18:29.:18:34.

talk. Querrey against Ward. Let's face it, Querrey is not known as a

:18:35.:18:39.

clay court specialist, is he? He's another one of these that there's

:18:40.:18:43.

more expected of him which has come out. He's had the weapons in his

:18:44.:18:46.

game. He is not very good defensively. Mentally he goes in

:18:47.:18:51.

dips in matches. He has been disappointing. In the States they

:18:52.:18:55.

thought he would be a top-ten player. It has not worked out that

:18:56.:19:01.

way. He is still young. Perhaps it will help him if he can play well.

:19:02.:19:06.

He is one-dimensional at times. Also, just looking at the betting

:19:07.:19:10.

for this - it is 7-1 on for Querrey to win. 4-1, James Ward. I think

:19:11.:19:15.

James has a better chance than that. . I do too. It is 30% chance. I

:19:16.:19:23.

think he has a good chance. Who knows out here - on the clay,

:19:24.:19:26.

following Andy Murray, feeling good. I think he's got a good shot here.

:19:27.:19:32.

Yes, the pressure is off him. That will help James. He is feeling good.

:19:33.:19:36.

His form is good. He is moving well. He will be wanting to go out there,

:19:37.:19:42.

to prove a point. You cannot underestimate how big a boost it was

:19:43.:19:49.

to get selected over him. For James to get the nod from the captain,

:19:50.:19:53.

like, you are my number two player, go out and prove to me why I

:19:54.:19:58.

selected you. Querrey, the number one now, as the American, ranked 49

:19:59.:20:03.

in the world. It is unbelievable! It is amazing.

:20:04.:20:07.

We talk about him in Britain and we have had that argument for years and

:20:08.:20:12.

obviously Andy Murray came along N the States, they are crucifying the

:20:13.:20:18.

people about why the American tennis is so bad in comparison to what it

:20:19.:20:23.

used to be. I know Patrick McEnroe is in charge of the programme. They

:20:24.:20:27.

are getting a lot of scrutiny at the moment. It is not good enough for a

:20:28.:20:32.

nation that big and with tennis that popular that they are not producing

:20:33.:20:37.

at the moment. A great Davis Cup record there. Out of his seven

:20:38.:20:46.

appearance appearances, won eight, lost five. Wins are wins, aren't

:20:47.:20:52.

they? Wins are wins. You cannot underestimate the value. It is huge

:20:53.:20:56.

to know you are going out there - the nerves - you deal with the

:20:57.:21:01.

pressure well. You are either a good Davis Cup player or you struggle.

:21:02.:21:05.

You get labelled and rightly so, because it is a special art. John

:21:06.:21:10.

knows as well as anyone, what it the like to go out there and play for

:21:11.:21:14.

your country and play these big matches whether in Lithuania, Egypt

:21:15.:21:18.

and now against America. It all comes under the same bracket -

:21:19.:21:24.

daifts cup, wearing GB on your back and trying to put a point on for the

:21:25.:21:29.

team. He loves to have a voice in his ear in the corner, in the

:21:30.:21:33.

changeover and he will relish this chance today to take on a better

:21:34.:21:40.

opponent. Jim Courier - this will be a must-win match for him and the

:21:41.:21:43.

United States. When we heard from Leon Smith talking about the

:21:44.:21:48.

practise sessions, kiel and James had a -- Kyle and James had a match

:21:49.:21:52.

against each other. He said James has been playing incredibly well in

:21:53.:21:56.

practise. That is important in a build-up to a match. No question!

:21:57.:22:02.

He'll be encouraged by his record. James Ward has won his matches in a

:22:03.:22:07.

lower division. He had a great win last year against Russia. You can

:22:08.:22:12.

not do more than that. He has won eight out of 13 singles. He's more

:22:13.:22:17.

experienced in Davis Cup than Sam Querrey. OK, he has played in the

:22:18.:22:22.

World Cup. The Davis Cup, there is something special, you either play

:22:23.:22:26.

well or you don't. Sam Querrey has got a losing record in Davis Cup. He

:22:27.:22:31.

has obviously gone up against better players. They are still losses and

:22:32.:22:36.

psychologically that is big. It is unfair asking you this, you want to

:22:37.:22:42.

get back in the team, but as a captain, his record is amazing.

:22:43.:22:46.

Seven wins, one loss. No-one knew, other than he was involved with Andy

:22:47.:22:49.

early on, what his background was and what he could deliver. He's done

:22:50.:22:55.

superbly. One thing he's been adamant is team atmosphere. It is

:22:56.:22:59.

preparation. It is build a team bond, a unity. Right back at the

:23:00.:23:03.

start of his first match, before the first tie that he was in charge of,

:23:04.:23:09.

he put a montage together of the vision, of what he wanted. He didn't

:23:10.:23:13.

put a time limit. It is a vision for the team. It was to get back to the

:23:14.:23:17.

world group. We were in Division Three. A poor division. We suffer

:23:18.:23:21.

some tough matches. Yes, we lost some matches we probably should

:23:22.:23:25.

have. It was tough and we had to get back up there. We had to accept

:23:26.:23:35.

where we were. We built it up. Now, they have done some great wins. This

:23:36.:23:42.

tie, against the States, this is a mouth-watering tie. It is one

:23:43.:23:46.

everyone has looked forward to since we beat Croatia in September.

:23:47.:23:53.

Everyone love loves it - it has an incredible history. When we talk

:23:54.:23:56.

about Leon Smith and I think we will see a different Leon Smith here

:23:57.:24:01.

because James Ward relies on him and so different from any other tennis

:24:02.:24:06.

match that you play, to be able to talk to. He knows Andy so well. Leon

:24:07.:24:13.

and James go back a long way on the courts and they know each other very

:24:14.:24:18.

well. He knows what to say. He will help him a big way today. James will

:24:19.:24:23.

play well. I am looking forward to this match. They are starting. If

:24:24.:24:26.

you want to get in touch, you can. There are many ways, I have ya our

:24:27.:24:33.

website. That is the address: You can hashtag us or via the Facebook

:24:34.:24:36.

page as well. Here we go. The second match,

:24:37.:24:50.

Querrey against Ward. Let's re rejoin John and Jonathan.

:24:51.:24:55.

Sam Querrey, been as high as 17 in the world.

:24:56.:25:23.

A big power game based around that serve and forehand combination.

:25:24.:25:34.

James Ward may be down as 175 on the list. E-I can tell you, he is qui --

:25:35.:25:38.

I can tell you, he is quietly confident ahead of this.

:25:39.:27:20.

There's going to be no doubt about his tactic today, target that Sam

:27:21.:27:25.

Querrey backhand. Ward po sezs a solid -- possesses a

:27:26.:27:52.

solid backhand himself. That is a point constructed on the

:27:53.:28:30.

tactics board. He'll be happy if, James Ward will be happy if he

:28:31.:28:37.

targets it to cross the court. He'll like that pattern.

:28:38.:28:49.

He does possess some cheap points, as does James Ward.

:28:50.:29:02.

He does have big first serves. . I can't help thinking, watching

:29:03.:29:10.

the crowd here, Ross, about what a mistake this was for the Us to put

:29:11.:29:20.

this venue on here. Normally the atmosphere is unbelievable, it helps

:29:21.:29:25.

the home support, but it me it feels like there is nothing going on out

:29:26.:29:29.

there. Such a small crowd. It is like they are too far from the

:29:30.:29:33.

court. And there is very little atmosphere for a Davis Cup match. It

:29:34.:29:38.

is a big mistake the venue that they have chosen. Nice to look at and San

:29:39.:29:43.

Diego is a lovely city but not a great place for a passionate

:29:44.:29:47.

audience. That is one of the big advantages for a home match.

:29:48.:29:53.

I am in disbelief, John. I can't belief they anticipated that they

:29:54.:29:56.

are going to get, clearly with the amount of seats in the stadium, it

:29:57.:30:01.

is up to 8,000 but they have a couple of thousand and. And it looks

:30:02.:30:05.

empty. And that is before the Super Bowl.

:30:06.:30:15.

When you are first drawn as a home tie, you think of the surface, what

:30:16.:30:19.

is beneficial for the team and where can the crowds fill the stadium,

:30:20.:30:24.

where to get the best support? Clearly they have missed a trick

:30:25.:30:29.

here. It is about a quarter full. If that.

:30:30.:30:48.

A little nervus, maybe, James Ward. A bit of a breeze out there as well.

:30:49.:30:57.

-- nervous. Ward, quite like Andy Murray, he

:30:58.:31:29.

will want to extend the rallies against Querrey. He is a big-hitting

:31:30.:31:33.

player. He relies on the serve, as we witnessed in the last game, but

:31:34.:31:38.

Ward will like to extend the rallies, 10, 15 shots, use his

:31:39.:31:50.

experience on the clay. That was a bad mistake there. He

:31:51.:31:56.

pulled off that forehand. It did not look comfortable.

:31:57.:32:18.

A good serve. He trained for a couple of years at the academy at

:32:19.:32:29.

value -- Valencia. You need good work ethic to impress the pan yards!

:32:30.:32:35.

-- Spaniards. It's going to be a long afternoon

:32:36.:33:03.

for James Ward, if he cannot win the exchange of back hndz. It is Ward's

:33:04.:33:09.

strength and Querrey's relative weakness.

:33:10.:33:19.

A terrific performance in the Davis Cup last year for Ward war. In

:33:20.:33:27.

Coventry, Britain beat Russia. An amazing comeback win. From 2 down on

:33:28.:33:30.

the tie. Interestingly, Ross, he shares

:33:31.:33:56.

coaches with the Russian he played and beat there. .

:33:57.:34:01.

Yes, he is a wild one. He trains hard, but he is a bit wacky, a bit

:34:02.:34:07.

crazy. James finds him funny, but ultimately they train hard together.

:34:08.:34:12.

It has helped James to get in good shape.

:34:13.:34:52.

His feet have not settled. I agree. He is a little bit tight.

:34:53.:34:59.

That is the beauty of Davis Cup. It is the best of five.

:35:00.:35:16.

Well, Querrey is in control in the early stages.

:35:17.:35:23.

P-0 with a break. Seven career titles to his name. Including on the

:35:24.:35:29.

clay in Belgrade, Serbia, in 2010. That year he won tournaments on all

:35:30.:35:35.

four surfaces. Belgrade on the clay, he won Queen's that year on the

:35:36.:35:41.

grass. Memphis Indoors and Los Angeles on the outdoor hard.

:35:42.:35:47.

And he beat Andy Murray in Los Angeles. Another Goodwin there for

:35:48.:35:50.

Querrey. This year, though, only the second

:35:51.:35:56.

round in Brisbane. The first round in Sydney.

:35:57.:36:02.

He lost to Albert Ramos. And in the third round, he beat Gulbis in the

:36:03.:36:12.

second round. A decent scalp. He lost to Fognini in the third round.

:36:13.:36:20.

There is a big Gulf in the class really on paper, I think? There is.

:36:21.:36:25.

And experience on the big, big level. On the tour event level, but

:36:26.:36:30.

not so much in the Davis Cup. There is a big Gulf in class, but the

:36:31.:36:36.

match-ups work well for Ward. He should take confidence going into

:36:37.:36:40.

the match, but ultimately they have played two different careers and

:36:41.:36:44.

schedules for the last five years. Querrey will feel like there is more

:36:45.:36:55.

from him to come. That's a very simple way that Ward

:36:56.:36:58.

can start to work his way back into the match. Using that effective 1-2

:36:59.:37:08.

punch. Served out wide on the 45 degree

:37:09.:37:33.

angle on the backhand cross-court. That's the example of not really

:37:34.:37:37.

getting his feet right. It was not that difficult a shot. It looked

:37:38.:37:41.

like he was late getting down to the ball.

:37:42.:37:56.

As we said with Donald Young, when he was struggling in the opening

:37:57.:38:03.

sets. Go back to the basics. Do what you know well. Use your serves and

:38:04.:38:08.

strengths. Don't go for the risky shots. Try to play yourself into the

:38:09.:38:11.

court. Way too many unforced errors at the

:38:12.:39:15.

moment from James Ward. He has to settle here.

:39:16.:39:20.

Querrey has put a lot of balls in but not really done too much that is

:39:21.:39:24.

so special so far. Overall, I think, it is a long way

:39:25.:39:49.

to go. John Blonde is the second umpire of

:39:50.:40:02.

the match. That was a good overall. Break point again for the United

:40:03.:40:04.

States. It is almost a carbon copy of the

:40:05.:40:32.

opening match. One player settling, doing the basics, using their

:40:33.:40:37.

experience. The other player struggling. With a lot of

:40:38.:40:44.

uncharacteristic errors. Yes, some of the backhands not even

:40:45.:40:48.

making the top of the net. That is unusual. He is flat on the ground

:40:49.:40:54.

Stokes, James Ward but normally more consistent than this. He is in the

:40:55.:40:56.

moment, he is feeling the pressure. I also think that Ward should slow

:40:57.:41:23.

it down between the points. Querrey is a quick player. Ward is missing a

:41:24.:41:29.

ball, then going to the next point. He needs to slow it up a little bit.

:41:30.:41:34.

He needs to do something to stop this momentum.

:41:35.:41:59.

That's the problem when you play Sam Querrey. When you are behind in a

:42:00.:42:05.

set it is very hard to get back into it. He has the availability to hold

:42:06.:42:11.

the serve so comfortably. He has proved that. 5-0.

:42:12.:42:16.

It is almost like a hard court match. He has taken the ball on.

:42:17.:42:21.

Short rallies. Dominating with the serve and backing it up.

:42:22.:42:25.

Unfortunately James Ward at the moment, has not got his teeth into

:42:26.:42:30.

it. He is not forcing him back. He is not getting enough balls back to

:42:31.:42:35.

worry him. It is quick-fire tennis. One is on fire, the other is

:42:36.:42:38.

certainly not. The tactics before the match from

:42:39.:42:41.

the captain would have been Serb well, James. Rally with the

:42:42.:42:47.

backhand. Play tight tennis. Play intense, no errors. Put your tactics

:42:48.:42:54.

forward but he has not. He has made a lot of errors on the backhand.

:42:55.:43:00.

That is a recipe for disaster to open up the match.

:43:01.:43:09.

There an aerial view of the Petco Park in San Diego. We said at the

:43:10.:43:14.

start we hoped it would fill up, but it does not look like that is going

:43:15.:43:20.

to be the case. It is an all-round disappoint, you would think for the

:43:21.:43:25.

US Tennis Association. Now a lot of you are getting in touch with us.

:43:26.:43:30.

Tweets coming in, talking about the empty stadium. The choice of it.

:43:31.:43:41.

The thing is, guys, you don't ever feel if this match got close, say,

:43:42.:43:49.

on Sunday, that there would be a jumping atmosphere. We are seeing

:43:50.:43:53.

empty seats but the people in the seats, they are looking like they

:43:54.:43:57.

are settling in for the week. That's right! They are not jumping

:43:58.:44:03.

around. The crowd can't take part in these

:44:04.:44:10.

matches when it is tight. I remember last year, at Del Ray Beach. They

:44:11.:44:17.

are the Williams sisters, there were 2,000 people there in a 4,000

:44:18.:44:22.

stadium with Venus and Serena Williams playing. I don't understand

:44:23.:44:29.

how they can't get it organised to be filled up. It is mind-boggling.

:44:30.:44:35.

This has not been a good venue choice, crowdwise. The atmosphere is

:44:36.:44:47.

not there at the moment. The confusing thing if you go to a

:44:48.:44:51.

stadium, be it a football stadium in Europe or a baseball stadium in the

:44:52.:44:57.

States, that would be for the final. 25,000? This is like an indoor

:44:58.:45:03.

arena-size set-up. So why aren't they indoors in an arena? The match

:45:04.:45:10.

against Serbia in autoyen. It was a huge stadium. Packed. A roaring

:45:11.:45:18.

crowd. It is the complete opposite. And Andy Murray is a big draw card.

:45:19.:45:23.

There is no reason, if they picked the venue right, it should have been

:45:24.:45:28.

full. At the moment it is just not at the

:45:29.:45:34.

races with James Ward. This is a set to forget.

:45:35.:45:41.

This is where Leon Smith has to do his work at the end of this set and

:45:42.:45:45.

re-set here. At least let the guy serve it out.

:45:46.:46:42.

They don't like bagel sets. Well, not when you are losing, they don't.

:46:43.:46:48.

Well done. Finally, on the board. One thing we know about James Ward,

:46:49.:46:53.

is he is self-confident. He believes in himself. He knows his ability.

:46:54.:46:58.

Knows when he is playing well. He can match it with anyone. So I don't

:46:59.:47:02.

think he will be too concerned, even if this set is a 6-1 set. There is

:47:03.:47:08.

the big man, John Isner. He would love to be out there playing.

:47:09.:47:24.

He is watching his closest friend. They often double as doubles

:47:25.:47:28.

partners. To me, his serve is in the top five

:47:29.:48:08.

serves of all time. With good ground strokes as well.

:48:09.:48:12.

There is no reason why he should not be in the top ten regularly with his

:48:13.:48:38.

game. When you have poked out wide like

:48:39.:48:43.

that, you have to get yourself back across court. This was a wrong shot

:48:44.:48:47.

selection therement he has given himself way too much court to cover

:48:48.:49:08.

on the next ball. Next ball.

:49:09.:49:12.

He an appropriate shot in the baseball stadium! It was a bad

:49:13.:49:22.

bounce but Ward's footwork did not move back off the baseline. You will

:49:23.:49:33.

get a bad bouncer on the foot mshgs -- foot marks.

:49:34.:49:37.

25 minutes and it is set point for Sam Querrey of the United States.

:49:38.:49:48.

The first opportunity for the locals to get behind their side. Having won

:49:49.:49:53.

a set for the first time this weekend.

:49:54.:50:01.

The tie going to form. Going to expectations, but I think it is fair

:50:02.:50:08.

to say that James Ward can play a lot better than he did there in that

:50:09.:50:11.

opening set. No question about it. You would have

:50:12.:50:17.

thought after Murray, going 1-0 up in a match, that he would have gone

:50:18.:50:21.

out here and exploded on to the scene and Sam Querrey would have

:50:22.:50:25.

been the one that would be tight. He knows if he loses this match it is

:50:26.:50:29.

all over, but the reverse has happened. James Ward has not settled

:50:30.:50:34.

yet, but there is a long way to go. The best of three sets, you would be

:50:35.:50:39.

panicking but the best of five, there is a long way to dig in.

:50:40.:50:45.

Ward will start afresh, but there is an element for Ward, he has

:50:46.:50:50.

practised well, he is feeling strong, but you cannot icate won and

:50:51.:51:02.

he has only won one match. It sometimes takes time to get that

:51:03.:51:08.

feeling back for winning matches. You cannot beat that.

:51:09.:51:12.

He looks at the moment as a player not willing to construct the point.

:51:13.:51:18.

Almost hitting the cover off the balls, not feeling confident to dig

:51:19.:51:22.

six or seven balls into the court to win the rally, but he has to change

:51:23.:51:28.

that quickly. Sam Querrey is a confidence type of player. When he

:51:29.:51:34.

starts swinging from the hip, he is dangerous. They are making sure that

:51:35.:51:38.

the court does not get dry. It was pretty wet at the beginning of the

:51:39.:51:43.

set. I'm not sure it needs more. It was only wet 25 minutes ago, they

:51:44.:51:49.

are covering it again with excess water.

:51:50.:51:52.

And to talk about the atmosphere one more time, I think tomorrow we will

:51:53.:51:56.

see a different atmosphere. I'm not saying that the crowd will be

:51:57.:52:01.

better, I don't know the ticket sales but the Bryans are very good

:52:02.:52:08.

at getting the crowd going. If anybody can do it, they may jazz

:52:09.:52:12.

people up. Sam Querrey is a very good player but he does not get the

:52:13.:52:22.

crowds going. He is pretty monotone out there.

:52:23.:52:27.

Is that an understatement? Well, the Bryan brothers, you are able to see

:52:28.:52:35.

that match at 8.00pm on BBC Three in the evening.

:52:36.:52:43.

The Bryan brothers up against Colin Fleming and maybe Andy Murray.

:52:44.:52:49.

There are many pushing for the doubles slot. I think, Ross, that

:52:50.:52:57.

Andy said they would discuss it with the team about the doubles tomorrow,

:52:58.:53:01.

but I think that the only scenario now that he would not play, unless

:53:02.:53:05.

there was injury, that we don't know about that happened in that much, is

:53:06.:53:10.

if James Ward happens to win the match and we end up 2-0, perhaps

:53:11.:53:15.

then Andy may think about resting, but other than that I think he will

:53:16.:53:18.

play. I do. That is what he implied in the

:53:19.:53:24.

press conference. Unless James wins, otherwise it will be a team

:53:25.:53:28.

decision, but I don't think it will be. I think it is Andy saying he is

:53:29.:53:33.

playing. That he is good to go! But a tough call for Colin Fleming. And

:53:34.:53:39.

who knows what will happen in the morning, but Colin Fleming's name is

:53:40.:53:43.

down there. He has a great record in the Davis Cup doubles. I am pleased

:53:44.:53:51.

to see he has been given another opportunity. Now with a chance to

:53:52.:53:55.

play against the best team in the world.

:53:56.:53:59.

They may be but they are beatable. Last year in Davis Cup they lost

:54:00.:54:04.

unexpectedly in the fifth set against Serbia.

:54:05.:54:08.

So, if Andy Murray and Colin Fleming play together... Well, yes, what

:54:09.:54:20.

chance do you put that at? I would say 55/45, Bryans. Very close.

:54:21.:54:31.

They have won a Davis Cup match and lost one together.

:54:32.:54:35.

Colin is a very good player but loves playing with someone who is

:54:36.:54:39.

stronger than him. With a big personality, who is going to be good

:54:40.:54:49.

for him to food off. Andy knows he is a good doubles

:54:50.:55:00.

player. He wants that one. It is in his mindset. Hopefully he

:55:01.:55:07.

will be there. Set two with new balls.

:55:08.:55:14.

This is not just the errors. It is where they are ending up. That

:55:15.:55:19.

forehand was in the middle of the net.

:55:20.:55:23.

Leon Smith I would have thought would be saying give it height. Give

:55:24.:55:27.

it spin. Take the net out of the play.

:55:28.:55:35.

It is different to the opening match.

:55:36.:55:39.

If Ward can get his teeth stuck into the match, it is not a foregone

:55:40.:56:52.

conclusion. Mush

:56:53.:57:00.

Much better from Ward. Good to see him getting stuck in. He needs to

:57:01.:57:08.

change momentum. He needs to get vocal out there.

:57:09.:57:13.

This is huge. He needed that one badly.

:57:14.:57:20.

To me it almost looked like James Ward, when you played the top ten

:57:21.:57:23.

players and you are ranked lower, the sense is when you are on court

:57:24.:57:28.

you have to come out of your comfort zone from the beginning to have a

:57:29.:57:32.

chance. You feel that, but against Sam Querrey, I don't think he has to

:57:33.:57:36.

go outside of his comfort zone that much, but it is like he feels he has

:57:37.:57:41.

to. That is why he was going for every ball. Trying to hit the cover

:57:42.:57:47.

off each shot. He does not need to do that. Querrey is a good player

:57:48.:57:52.

but not a great player. You are spot on, John. I agree

:57:53.:57:56.

completely. Bad luck. That is a better point. A

:57:57.:58:10.

much better backhand. Deep. He does like the drop-shot, James Ward. He

:58:11.:58:16.

almost got away with this one. Not a bad one. Sam Querrey did well to

:58:17.:58:20.

flick that ball that hard from this position.

:58:21.:59:12.

Sometimes hard and fast down the centre can be a good ploy against

:59:13.:59:17.

Querrey. He needs to find some consistency

:59:18.:59:31.

though. He's got to do the business on his serve. At least hold to get

:59:32.:59:36.

into the business side of the set and not get blown away and go down

:59:37.:59:41.

an early break. He's going to really focus on getting a lot more first

:59:42.:59:47.

serves in. At least keeping his nose out in front in this set.

:59:48.:59:55.

Give your opponent a chance to get nervous at three or four-all.

:59:56.:00:38.

The best of the match so far. He's getting height on the ball now

:00:39.:00:45.

with the ground strokes. He's not hitting it so flat.

:00:46.:02:56.

Ward knows the importance of that service hold.

:02:57.:03:07.

Very entertaining brass band strike up what sounds like the Sports Night

:03:08.:03:17.

theme from the 1980s. You wouldn't want to be sitting next

:03:18.:03:22.

to them, would you? Makes a good atmosphere, I suppose. They have to

:03:23.:03:28.

find one from somewhere. Word word did well to have a toilet

:03:29.:03:36.

break and get his mind sorted. He's a different player than in the first

:03:37.:03:40.

half an hour. Making his opponent work for the point. It was

:03:41.:03:43.

surprising for Querrey also the way that Ward played in that opening

:03:44.:03:50.

set. Good to see the Brit playing more consistent, playing smarter,

:03:51.:03:53.

realising who he is and where he's playing. It is what you said. Not

:03:54.:03:59.

having to do too much. We see it so often, if Kyle Edmund had played in

:04:00.:04:04.

this match, he had not beaten higher-ranked opponents. Ward has in

:04:05.:04:10.

the past. He's won daifts cup matches there's no -- Davis Cup

:04:11.:04:16.

matches. There's no need... The future of American tennis is looking

:04:17.:04:18.

bright. Cannot help by think if this was in

:04:19.:04:30.

the UK, it would be indoors, in one of our big arenas and there would be

:04:31.:04:33.

families everywhere. Maybe we should have Davis Cup

:04:34.:04:54.

replays. There 's a lot of talk about changing the format, but I

:04:55.:04:56.

have never heard that one, Jonathan. In the Davis Cup you play a team,

:04:57.:05:31.

here in San Diego. Next time the UK get p drawn against the State -- -

:05:32.:05:39.

the UK get drawn against the States it will be played in the UK.

:05:40.:05:45.

The meeting of this side the last time 1999 - a famous match in

:05:46.:05:50.

Birmingham. Jim Courier inspired the United

:05:51.:05:56.

States, edging home against Henman and Rudd.

:05:57.:06:05.

-- Rudeski. John Lloyd here, trying to restrain

:06:06.:06:11.

your brother, who was the captain, wearing his pork pie hat, if I

:06:12.:06:16.

remember correctly. Yes, a bit embarrassing, but... Big serving

:06:17.:06:23.

from Sam Querrey at the end of that game. 2-2. John often when two

:06:24.:06:39.

single players play, why did Henman and Rudeski not have more success?

:06:40.:06:45.

It was one of those things. Close there to doing very well on a couple

:06:46.:06:49.

of occasions, but didn't quite get the result thats - I thought with

:06:50.:06:55.

how they were play -- the results. I thought with how they played we had

:06:56.:07:01.

a chance. I think they lost one match to Austria in the doubles. I

:07:02.:07:06.

am not exactly sure - there were a lot of double matches which they

:07:07.:07:08.

won. Nicely done from the American. Good

:07:09.:08:12.

field. On this occasion... He didn't really go after that one.

:08:13.:09:04.

He just lunged at it on that forehand. He didn't move his feet to

:09:05.:09:09.

the ball properly. A lot of errors from the British

:09:10.:09:13.

man. Querrey needed to hoist that one

:09:14.:09:55.

back deeper and get some height on the ball.

:09:56.:10:20.

A huge roar from Ward. Closing out that game 3-2. Getting all the

:10:21.:10:29.

support he needs from the bench. No doubt about that, that will continue

:10:30.:10:33.

all day. The likes of Fleming and Edmund, the

:10:34.:10:39.

young youngster, we got a glimpse of there.

:10:40.:10:47.

If Edmund fulfils his early potential, there's an exciting

:10:48.:10:54.

line-up of the future. Andy and Kyle in the singles with the back-up of

:10:55.:11:00.

Ward and players not even here, Dan Evans, who has played a number of

:11:01.:11:04.

ties over the past couple of years, not selected this time.

:11:05.:11:13.

And our embarrassment of riches in doubles. Ross, talk a bit about your

:11:14.:11:18.

recovery - it is great to see you back on the court after everything

:11:19.:11:22.

you went through last year. A couple of tournaments in, how are you

:11:23.:11:26.

feeling? I feel good. I really enjoyed the trip to Australia. Back

:11:27.:11:31.

playing with Colin Fleming and did a good preseason in Miami and Spain.

:11:32.:11:37.

Made sure I got some good training. That is when I felt I was back to

:11:38.:11:41.

full health, when I was able to mix with players like Andy in the gym

:11:42.:11:46.

and on the court. The results were a bit disappointing in Australia. As I

:11:47.:11:51.

say, over the course of three-set matches, one good set, one bad set

:11:52.:11:55.

and one average set. It will come. I need to be patient, keep training

:11:56.:11:57.

hard and look forward to the future. Looking at that cap caption, at the

:11:58.:12:09.

number of Davis Cup titles. Lovely drop shot from Ward. Was

:12:10.:12:35.

pondering for all our troubles, there is America and Australia with

:12:36.:12:40.

all the cups and all the glories from decades. We are all in the same

:12:41.:12:45.

state, aren't we, the Grand Slam nations, in terms of player

:12:46.:12:50.

development, apart from France, who have their production line. We have

:12:51.:12:55.

a chat with the French when we go to the tournaments and that I say we

:12:56.:13:01.

would love to have a Grand Slam player like you have got and we say,

:13:02.:13:06.

we would love to have 50 player inside the top 100.

:13:07.:13:19.

That was a lovely backhand from Querrey.

:13:20.:13:28.

As we see with the sun beaming down, the court seems like it is playing a

:13:29.:13:34.

bit quicker. Bigger serves, shorter rallies. There's definite

:13:35.:13:41.

definitely... Well played. Brilliant from him. So

:13:42.:13:57.

often things can change in matches. Did well to stay in this rally.

:13:58.:14:05.

There was one moment it just looked like his feet were going to get

:14:06.:14:09.

stuck in the clay. Easy to get across for that volley.

:14:10.:14:18.

Getting a lot of points on that serve. It is not easy to play

:14:19.:14:22.

against when he's serving. Two or three points a game at the moment.

:14:23.:14:25.

Could change his stance, his position. It must be 90% of points

:14:26.:14:29.

behind his first serve. Terrific forehand.

:14:30.:15:42.

Pressure on the Ward serve now. He missed it! I was just wondering,

:15:43.:16:26.

where is the sun as well! It was behind him, the sun, so no excuse

:16:27.:16:32.

there. This one, he makes - 99 times out of 100.

:16:33.:16:43.

That is a shocker! Takes him 0-40 down in the game.

:16:44.:17:07.

Now we have Querrey serving. Not giving any cheap points.

:17:08.:18:34.

It looked out. I thought it with was out too. Considering three points

:18:35.:18:44.

have followed that horrendous smash, it has been a decent recovery from

:18:45.:18:51.

Ward. That was wide. There could be a huge

:18:52.:19:02.

haul here forward ward. That would be fantastic for him.

:19:03.:19:27.

He's played smart. He's kept the ball in court. He has not given

:19:28.:19:33.

Querrey any real opportunities to seize control of the rallies.

:19:34.:19:54.

Really well down. Five shots in a row.

:19:55.:20:02.

Well done James Ward. You did well there! He hung in there. He's given

:20:03.:20:10.

Sam Querrey a chance to get a bit tired. After losing that game, which

:20:11.:20:17.

he should have won, they just may be the serve rhythm. He cannot keep

:20:18.:20:23.

serving like this. Or maybe he can! Back to his chair so Jim Courier can

:20:24.:20:30.

tell him about another of his Grand Slam titles back in the day. We are

:20:31.:20:34.

here all weekend for coverage of this tie, being played in San Diego,

:20:35.:20:41.

California, inside the baseball stadium.

:20:42.:20:46.

Tonight, over on BBC One, just a plug for the deadline day programme

:20:47.:20:51.

with Dan Walker and guests. That starts at 11. 25pm. Lots of

:20:52.:20:56.

last-minute activity around the country.

:20:57.:21:00.

And, if you need to do other thing during the weekend, you can listen

:21:01.:21:06.

to this tie as well on 5 Live sports extra.

:21:07.:21:13.

Right, James Ward, can you use that turn around in the game to your

:21:14.:21:20.

advantage? This is potentially a big moment in the tie, with Querrey

:21:21.:21:22.

serving at 3-4. Brilliant play. Building pressure on

:21:23.:22:20.

the Querrey serve. Just get the ball back in court.

:22:21.:23:28.

A good serve. Ward was on to that one.

:23:29.:24:24.

A good eye these umpires on clay. You need to work out which mark you

:24:25.:24:32.

are looking at. Sometimes that is where the controversy comes.

:24:33.:25:37.

So far Ward has played his service shots more carefully, taking more

:25:38.:25:50.

care with his shots, making every single one count.

:25:51.:26:03.

That's the play, that if he can frequently score with could give

:26:04.:26:11.

Ward hope here. Does not defend well, Querrey, someone who has had

:26:12.:26:17.

as high ranking as he has. That is his weakness there.

:26:18.:26:30.

Their defensive play is unbelievable.

:26:31.:27:07.

That is his best game of the match. What a time to do it!

:27:08.:27:18.

He will drum his ear drums, saying make your opponent work for this

:27:19.:27:24.

game. In five minutes' time you could be

:27:25.:27:30.

sitting at a set-all. Have you forgotten what happened in the first

:27:31.:27:33.

25 minutes? We have to give him credit because he's made a good

:27:34.:27:38.

comeback. It could have gone away quickly there. The way he started

:27:39.:27:42.

the first set was not good at all. He was looking rattled. He has cut

:27:43.:27:49.

his unforced errors down dramatically from what it was. The

:27:50.:27:52.

majority came in the first set, where they were just all over the

:27:53.:27:54.

place. For tomorrow someone should let the

:27:55.:28:06.

US director know that not everyone in the world has commercial breaks

:28:07.:28:11.

at changeovers. Clearly that is what they think.

:28:12.:28:19.

We are on BBC Three for a little while yet. We get to 1 1pm, we will

:28:20.:28:29.

switch over to BBC Two and back tomorrow at 8pm for the doubles.

:28:30.:28:44.

Querrey serving to stay in the second set.

:28:45.:29:27.

He's serving well. He has a good rhythm on that first serve today.

:29:28.:29:35.

That's what we say about clay-court tennis. Big service, big on

:29:36.:29:37.

anything. He has won only one match on Davis

:29:38.:30:12.

Cup. He has lost five. His win against Victor Troich has given him

:30:13.:30:20.

handy place. Overall he has won four and lost

:30:21.:30:26.

six. Smart play from Ward. Taking the

:30:27.:30:49.

pace off the first serve. Realising that you have to control the rally.

:30:50.:30:52.

Make your opponent move. Very, very good play.

:30:53.:31:11.

And playing against a player who is higher ranked than you, you likes to

:31:12.:31:16.

boss the rallies, you don't always need power. It is more important to

:31:17.:31:18.

have the precision. He is ahead again. 6-5. He knows at

:31:19.:32:00.

the very least he will have a break. A chance to have a rest.

:32:01.:32:05.

. We talk about the top players, sorry for laughing, it sounds like,

:32:06.:32:10.

I don't know what instrument that could be playing! The playing the

:32:11.:32:17.

scoreboard is important, rather than playing catch-up. Or worry being the

:32:18.:32:21.

scenario of the tie, the surroundings, the crowd, the

:32:22.:32:25.

opponent. It is little steps at a time. Getting in front of the

:32:26.:32:29.

opponent. Making him serve to stay in the match. To catch up.

:32:30.:32:38.

Here we go, the cameramen down tools as the commercial world go for their

:32:39.:32:46.

break. Oh, dear, good old BBC. Keep a camera high. Thank you very much.

:32:47.:32:51.

There we go. A lovely city, San Diego. Out by the Causeway. Some

:32:52.:33:02.

beautiful beaches and locations there.

:33:03.:33:17.

So often we talk about the importance of taking a break point

:33:18.:33:23.

and taking the latter stages of the game, but the first point of a game,

:33:24.:33:29.

when serving to stay on the set is crucial.

:33:30.:33:36.

I thought he had hooked that wide for a second.

:33:37.:34:31.

So a tie-break it is. So often in tie-breaks, you talk

:34:32.:34:41.

about players who are serving better. Querrey has been relentless

:34:42.:34:56.

about that in his serve. It's a lot of tie-breakers he has

:34:57.:35:02.

played! A good start.

:35:03.:35:16.

. A bit cautious there from Querrey on the backhand in the middle of

:35:17.:35:20.

that rally. He didn't do anything with it. He got punished.

:35:21.:35:30.

A good tie-break play-off, you are thinking about taking one of two

:35:31.:35:35.

points. Getting one of these next two, you are in good shape.

:35:36.:36:51.

Oh, there it is. A gift. Oh! What was that all about? What a

:36:52.:36:58.

shocking point that was. He should have done more with the

:36:59.:37:03.

ground stroke in the first place. That top spin volley. He should have

:37:04.:37:08.

done more with that. This was a full arm swinging volley that you teach

:37:09.:37:13.

in clinics. Don't take the racket back that far on the volley, please.

:37:14.:37:24.

He had that. Just a little more punch there. It had him across

:37:25.:37:28.

court. Yes, an opportunity for Ward.

:37:29.:37:44.

Back on Serb in the tie-break. -- back on serve in the tie-break.

:37:45.:38:26.

Ward and Leon Smith will know the importance of this set. To go two

:38:27.:38:37.

sets to love down away in the Davis Cup. It makes the final score

:38:38.:39:01.

bigger. There is something about his

:39:02.:39:07.

movement up the court, Ross, that does not fill you with confidence.

:39:08.:39:12.

It is a tricky volley, admittedly but he will have been expected to

:39:13.:39:16.

have made it. He is known not to have huge ability

:39:17.:39:21.

around the net. He relies on the forehand. Trying to hit winners from

:39:22.:39:29.

the main court. If you can make him play volley, as Ward has done. You

:39:30.:39:36.

have a chance. Oh, it clipped the line.

:39:37.:39:41.

I thought that was going out. A tiny puff of West Coast breeze has

:39:42.:39:48.

maybe assisted Great Britain there. 5-3. This is for set point.

:39:49.:40:17.

What a shaky tiebreaker he played here. Miss-hit another ball in that

:40:18.:40:26.

rally. But Ward deserves this lead.

:40:27.:40:29.

He does. He has done really well to get to

:40:30.:40:35.

this position. Three set points. Two serves to come for Querrey, but Ward

:40:36.:40:40.

knows, even if the American wins these, he will have another on his

:40:41.:40:44.

own serve if necessary. He won't need it! He takes the first

:40:45.:40:52.

one. Ward is back in this match. And if any across the tie, you would

:40:53.:40:57.

say this was the match that America has their banker. So for Britain to

:40:58.:41:06.

have it at one set all, it is a huge positive for Leon Smith's men.

:41:07.:41:11.

The pressure is on now. Up a set he looked confident. Now at

:41:12.:41:17.

1-1, he has to win this match. Otherwise the USA are in big

:41:18.:41:22.

trouble. Obviously. He knows it. Leon Smith, in his ninth tie as the

:41:23.:41:29.

captain since taking over from John here in 2010. He has won eight. He

:41:30.:41:39.

has lost the single one. That was the quarter-final in group 1 against

:41:40.:41:44.

Belgium. Decent players in Belgium these days. Generally, they have

:41:45.:41:47.

been steadily working their way through the back waters of the

:41:48.:41:51.

Euro-Africa Zone. Not a place you want to be in the Davis Cup as John

:41:52.:41:58.

will testify here. That Turkey match was down at Eastbourne. And Hungary,

:41:59.:42:10.

Luxembourg. Tunisia, low key was mot quite the word, but you work your

:42:11.:42:15.

way up the divisions and earn a right to play-off for the World

:42:16.:42:26.

Group. Which they did in Croatia last year.

:42:27.:42:30.

They have done well. They are pressive results.

:42:31.:42:43.

. The big ones the Russian win in Slovakia, without Andy, they were

:42:44.:42:48.

the two impressive results. Looking at the rankings and the teams, you

:42:49.:42:53.

would have thought it would be tough to win the matches. They came

:42:54.:43:00.

through it well. He deserves the credit for that, no doubt about it.

:43:01.:43:07.

Once again they are giving the court a watering. Don't know why they do

:43:08.:43:13.

that. It does not need it. And the crowd is thinning out again. I don't

:43:14.:43:18.

get this, I really don't. This is where America now need their home

:43:19.:43:22.

support to help them through this tricky situation.

:43:23.:43:32.

Well, exactly. If they lose that much. If -- if they lose this

:43:33.:43:49.

match... The movement of Querrey, the ability of the man on the

:43:50.:43:54.

surface, comparing it to a player like Andy Murray. It is like chalk

:43:55.:43:58.

and cheese. There is no flexibility in the game.

:43:59.:44:03.

Once he is behind the eight-ball he cannot move. An impressive set. A

:44:04.:44:09.

great recovery from James Ward. Losing a first set when you are

:44:10.:44:14.

thumped like that in Davis Cup, there is nothing more when you are

:44:15.:44:18.

playing for your country, it is easy to panic a bit.

:44:19.:44:41.

Well, America, you feel have to find Davis Cup players for the future

:44:42.:44:44.

from somewhere. Their resources are rather thin at the moment. Rodrigo

:44:45.:44:51.

De Triano was a -- Andy Roddick was a main stay of their Davis Cup team.

:44:52.:44:59.

The likes of Mehdi Fish giving support.

:45:00.:45:13.

And Jack Socchi, and looking back James Blake. Another top player. He

:45:14.:45:19.

has dropped away and stopped playing.

:45:20.:45:23.

It is quite scarce. The problem with the court here, the

:45:24.:45:28.

man with the hose has not wiggled it about enough in that corner. It has

:45:29.:45:31.

created a little flood. Well, Ryan Harrison. He is still

:45:32.:45:48.

only 21. He is down at 121 in the world. When he was 18 and bursting

:45:49.:45:57.

on the scene. You would o not have anticipated

:45:58.:46:02.

that for Harrison. Struggling right now.

:46:03.:46:06.

So many players from the States are comfortable in the home court. They

:46:07.:46:11.

get all of their results in America, but they struggle when they have to

:46:12.:46:16.

travel on these trips. As a tennis player you have to.

:46:17.:46:29.

You see that at the start of the European clay season. A tournament

:46:30.:46:34.

also in Houston that the Americans play, then complain at Monte Carlo.

:46:35.:46:41.

So don't play Houston, come to Europe and prepare! Lovely angle. He

:46:42.:46:51.

is playing well, James Ward. He is playing very well. Once he

:46:52.:46:56.

gets Querrey on the run, Querrey does not move well enough. Corner to

:46:57.:47:02.

corner, and this does not suit him. He gets stuck and cannot slide into

:47:03.:48:07.

the shots when he is out wide. Well, captain, Jim Courier, is not

:48:08.:48:12.

quite putting himself in the team just yet. An important hold for

:48:13.:48:21.

Querrey there at of the, at the start of the third set. He has to

:48:22.:48:26.

believe he can win this tie, James Ward. It is shown that he can.

:48:27.:48:34.

Absolutely and the amount of forced errors. They are only two apart.

:48:35.:48:43.

Earlier, Ward was making so many unforced errors but now Querrey is

:48:44.:48:47.

the one. His shot selection has been poor.

:48:48.:48:57.

He has this rather laconic lazy style about his game, Querrey. It is

:48:58.:49:03.

deceptive, with the serve and the forehand it is almost like this will

:49:04.:49:26.

do. Pop it back over. I suppose when you possess a big

:49:27.:49:30.

serve and booming forehand, sometimes it is easy to sit back and

:49:31.:49:35.

rely on the weapons. . Yes, for Querrey he needs those two

:49:36.:50:17.

things to fire. The wind is getting up out there.

:50:18.:50:23.

You can probably pick up the sound of it, buffeting the court

:50:24.:50:31.

microphones. Ward must be careful here at 15-30.

:50:32.:51:35.

Well for all his good work at the end of the second set, that is a

:51:36.:51:44.

give away and Querrey is ahead 2-0 in the third.

:51:45.:51:49.

Such a pity. He played so well in the second. He hung in there. The

:51:50.:51:53.

shot selection was good. So many balls at the right time. Getting

:51:54.:51:58.

back into good positions. Then that game, he really chucked it away.

:51:59.:52:17.

It is awkward serving there with that sun. The shadow make it is

:52:18.:52:21.

tough for a player when the ball comes in and out of the shadow.

:52:22.:52:48.

John we talk about the experience of playing matches and big matches.

:52:49.:52:55.

Querrey has done well to settle the tied but Ward has not played too

:52:56.:53:11.

smartly the last five mips. It is about the first volley winner

:53:12.:53:16.

he has made today. He liked them at that height, that is for sure. If

:53:17.:53:21.

you missed that one, you would have been in real trouble.

:53:22.:54:22.

This perhaps is where the difference comes, when you are not playing on

:54:23.:54:29.

the full tour, week in, week out. You have done well. Worked back in a

:54:30.:54:37.

set. Won a tie-break, then you go 3-0 down in the next set. Is that a

:54:38.:54:43.

consequence of being at that level? I don't know. I think it is a lapse

:54:44.:54:47.

in concentration and focus. There was a huge uplift from the team for

:54:48.:54:52.

Ward with the winning of that second set, but I think it is a loss of

:54:53.:54:57.

concentration. Sloppy points. He was so successful throughout the whole

:54:58.:55:01.

of the second set. The rallies were extended. He was able to build the

:55:02.:55:07.

point. Here he has hardly made a ball. And when he has gone for the

:55:08.:55:13.

early shots, there has been risk and the unforced errors have come out.

:55:14.:55:19.

I agree. He controlled the first set, playing smart tennis, now he

:55:20.:55:24.

has not only missed them but missed them by a long way. A strange shot

:55:25.:55:29.

selection. He has to get back to business. This set is going wick

:55:30.:55:36.

quickly. And it is not like Querrey has played better. That is anowing.

:55:37.:55:42.

If he had a purple patch but he has not. He is up.

:55:43.:55:49.

Ward has come from a challenger tournament in Hawaii.

:55:50.:55:55.

Hawaii, San Diego. Not so bad. Back-to-back.

:55:56.:56:20.

Last year at that tournament, the director of tennis at the club where

:56:21.:56:27.

it was held, got a wildcard. There is hope for us all.

:56:28.:56:32.

A nice forehand down the line. A nice shape on that.

:56:33.:56:39.

That's an example. He is pushed out wide. Four feet behind the baseline,

:56:40.:56:47.

then he goes for it down the line. There is no logic. If he made it,

:56:48.:56:53.

questioner we are would have had the whole open cross-court. There is no

:56:54.:57:00.

margin for er-Onuoha the shot. It is like his brain switched off. You

:57:01.:57:11.

can't do that at this level. It is the first an the third set is

:57:12.:57:16.

almost the same with a very good second.

:57:17.:57:23.

There you go. 11 errors already in this set. He made ten in the second

:57:24.:57:26.

set and that was 13 games. Two break-point chances have slipped

:57:27.:58:56.

by. Here is a third. He was struggling to get his feet

:58:57.:59:32.

moving in the middle of that rally, but a decent shot to finish with.

:59:33.:59:38.

The momentum shifts here. If he can hold this from 0-40, what a

:59:39.:59:41.

confidence boost that would be. . Once again, Ward, when he increases

:59:42.:00:06.

the target, he plays down the middle more consistently, he wins the

:00:07.:00:10.

longer rallies. He has good ground strokes. It is effective against the

:00:11.:00:13.

big US player. Well done. Good hold. Again from

:00:14.:01:19.

0-40, well done indeed. It is the second time he has done that under

:01:20.:01:23.

intense pressure. As John says, still a break down.

:01:24.:01:29.

Not as bad as it could be. No, if he had lost that game, that

:01:30.:01:33.

set was all over. We still have a shot here.

:01:34.:01:58.

Screamer! He's got natural power of both wings, does Ward. If he can

:01:59.:02:40.

crack shots like that. This is a crucial game. We are

:02:41.:02:45.

leaving coverage on BBC Three. We are moving to BBC Two. We are back

:02:46.:02:51.

here tomorrow night on BBC Three with live features of the doubles

:02:52.:02:55.
