Good evening. If you weren't with us over on BBC Three, welcome to our

:00:27.:00:32.

coverage of the Davis Cup tie between Great Britain and the United

:00:33.:00:37.

States. It is being played in California on a temporary clay

:00:38.:00:40.

court. There was only a small crowd on the opening day and for the home

:00:41.:00:44.

fans that did turn up, well very little to cheer about because Andy

:00:45.:00:49.

Murray put on a masterclass. He defeated the number two American,

:00:50.:00:56.

Donald Young in straight sets. And little more than an hour-and-a-half.

:00:57.:01:00.

It was Andy Murray at his very best. A perfect start for Andy and the

:01:01.:01:09.

British team. So well done to Andy and let's hear what he had to say

:01:10.:01:11.

after the match. Very well played. A fabulous start

:01:12.:01:19.

and a dream start for Great Britain? Yeah. It is important to get off to

:01:20.:01:24.

a good start. You know, the two singles matches today, I go in as

:01:25.:01:29.

favourite and Sam will be going in as favourite against James and it

:01:30.:01:33.

puts the pressure on Sam a lot to play a good match and James can

:01:34.:01:37.

hopefully play a little bit freer. It was a good start.

:01:38.:01:41.

Yes, it was a very good start, indeed. Confirmation of the score:

:01:42.:01:52.

Murray wins and James Ward against Sam Querrey.

:01:53.:02:09.

It was Sam Querrey against James Ward. Querrey raced through the

:02:10.:02:18.

opening set. The second set went to a tie-break and the American was

:02:19.:02:23.

tentative. He made errors like that that he would want to forget and he

:02:24.:02:28.

is the experienced player out on court. Ward went to 6-3 and another

:02:29.:02:38.

Querrey error over the baseline and James proved what a fighter he is in

:02:39.:02:46.

previous Davis Cup matches. This is it. 1-1. He knew that one was out

:02:47.:02:51.

and James Ward involved in a battle once again. Well, that was the good

:02:52.:02:56.

news for Britain at the end of that second set, but I'm afraid it didn't

:02:57.:03:03.

go well in the third set because James was breaks down and indeed, is

:03:04.:03:08.

just serving here to take it to 4-2 in the third set. So we are ready

:03:09.:03:12.

for a battle. Can he get back in this third set? Let's join our

:03:13.:03:16.

commentators for this. Well, good evening. It has been

:03:17.:03:30.

erratic from Ward I am afraid in this third set aft doing so well to

:03:31.:03:35.

win this tie-break and level this match at 1-1. But Querrey the more

:03:36.:03:40.

experienced, the higher ranked of the two men. He is in control at the

:03:41.:03:42.

moment. Good fortune as well which gives him

:03:43.:04:01.

a break point in this game. Normally when your team-mate has a slice of

:04:02.:04:08.

luck or gets a big point like that, give him a lot of enthusiasm, but

:04:09.:04:13.

not much team atmosphere from the bench from the US Team. I always

:04:14.:04:18.

think often that determines the outcome of the match or the tie.

:04:19.:04:40.

A few of those from Querrey today and Ward will take them. Especially

:04:41.:04:52.

on break point. There is Donald Young who lost to Andy Murray.

:04:53.:04:58.

Murray was very professional. It couldn't have gone much better for

:04:59.:05:03.

him. This match is tighter than a lot of the locals were expecting. If

:05:04.:05:07.

Britain can just sneak this one and get a win here, two love after day

:05:08.:05:15.

one. They have a wonderful chance of beating the USA in the Davis Cup for

:05:16.:05:19.

the first time in 79 years. Well, I don't believe that. It drops

:05:20.:05:48.

over. One a piece in the game, I suppose. Another break point for

:05:49.:06:03.

Querrey. It is when you hit those net cords. Evens out, it is a load

:06:04.:06:06.

of rubbish. Well done. He held that nicely on

:06:07.:06:21.

the forehand. He just waited until Querrey committed himself.

:06:22.:06:56.

How good were those squash shots he hit there? Two in a row. It looked

:06:57.:07:04.

like he was done and dusted in that point. This is another game, he had

:07:05.:07:14.

love 30. Querrey had a lot of opportunities for a double break.

:07:15.:07:26.

That was one of the British coaches there.

:07:27.:07:40.

Oh yes! Querrey at his best with the forehand there. Yes, it is the type

:07:41.:07:52.

of tennis that brings Querrey, it is dangerous and having beaten Djokovic

:07:53.:07:56.

and beaten Murray, that's when he let's go. -- lets go.

:07:57.:08:21.

Wrong footing second serve ace. Got to love that. Where did that come

:08:22.:08:33.

from? Well, Ward has done a good job at times of digging himself out of

:08:34.:08:43.

situations. Now having to save break points. That was beautifully played.

:08:44.:08:58.

Stunning play from Ward and Querrey will be wondering how this match is

:08:59.:09:03.

still poised in the third set. Surely, this is a bigger lead that

:09:04.:09:08.

he should have and it plays on players minds when you don't take

:09:09.:09:10.

your opportunities. Do you think he enjoyed that? Well,

:09:11.:09:36.

he is starting to hit the ball really well again. Similar to the

:09:37.:09:38.

second set. That's a good second serve, but I

:09:39.:10:17.

just felt there that Ward, love 15, somehow get that back in the court.

:10:18.:10:27.

That's the captain of the United States team.

:10:28.:10:31.

What a player he was in his day. Done it again. I don't know what he

:10:32.:11:00.

is putting in his drop shot potion, but it's working. The best of five

:11:01.:11:12.

sets in Davis Cup. With Britain already one love up in the tie

:11:13.:11:16.

thanks to Andy Murray, huge significance on this match.

:11:17.:11:56.

He did well to get round there that quickly.

:11:57.:12:32.

Good from Ward. Good work here. These players have almost goaded

:12:33.:12:42.

each other to increase their level. They realise the value and the

:12:43.:12:45.

importance of the set. There is good tennis going on.

:12:46.:13:15.

He must have half thought, Ward, about pulling the trigger on that

:13:16.:13:28.

penultimate forehand. Querrey using all his experience in this

:13:29.:13:38.

situation. Oh dear. It just shows you, you can somehow dig a ball back

:13:39.:13:43.

into court. You never know. That was a good effort from Ward to get his

:13:44.:13:48.

racket on that serve. That was a nervy forehand though.

:13:49.:14:06.

In some ways, you look at the way Sam Querrey has been sort of

:14:07.:14:13.

playing, up and down and it is lucky that he served well.

:14:14.:14:39.

Querrey survives 12 scares in that game, no doubt about that. 5-2 up

:14:40.:14:46.

now. Strong position. Just going back to James Ward, and

:14:47.:14:58.

the bit that he had in the third, and the difference between James

:14:59.:15:04.

Ward's level and players 50, 100 places on, when they go into bad

:15:05.:15:08.

patches, they reset quickly. They might play one or two bad shots, but

:15:09.:15:13.

the top players play one and immediately are right back in it.

:15:14.:15:18.

When Ward goes off, he throws in bunches of three and four, when he

:15:19.:15:24.

loses without being able to reset during the game. If he wants to make

:15:25.:15:29.

that next rise up the level, he has got to claim a consistently and not

:15:30.:15:36.

go up and down all the time. You are spot on. This happens throughout the

:15:37.:15:44.

year. Sometimes it happens not just for points in a row but weeks in a

:15:45.:15:48.

row, and if he loses confidence he can go three or four weeks without

:15:49.:15:52.

winning matches and his base level, not just in a match or a set but

:15:53.:15:57.

over the course of weeks is not at the level it needs to be, to be

:15:58.:16:01.

ranked 50 in the world. When he plays well, when his level is like

:16:02.:16:07.

it is for the vast majority of this match, he hits it as well as

:16:08.:16:12.

Querrey. His ground strokes are as forceful. As penetrating to the

:16:13.:16:17.

mid-court. There was no reason why he cannot play to this level more

:16:18.:16:19.

often. The biggest difference between these

:16:20.:16:50.

two so far has been, the first serve and the way that Querrey dispatchers

:16:51.:16:55.

the ball in the mid-court. They have both played well in patches. --

:16:56.:17:01.

dispatches. This could be an interesting game if

:17:02.:17:13.

Ward can hold, here. Ward has been threatening, and this could be a

:17:14.:17:14.

tight game, the next game. That backs up what I was saying.

:17:15.:17:31.

After a good serve, he has not put the ball away and Querrey uses his

:17:32.:17:35.

forehand to put the pressure on. Ward has done what he can to keep

:17:36.:18:29.

this third set moving along. Now, what can you do to break this huge

:18:30.:18:33.

surge from the American, Sam Querrey? Six foot six. He has been

:18:34.:18:44.

as high as 17 in the world. Currently, Querrey, at 49, Ward at

:18:45.:18:58.

175 on the world list. That is the difference in quality, on paper,

:18:59.:18:59.

anyway. Many people think that Querrey's

:19:00.:19:15.

ranking is awfully low and of not so good quality, compared to his level.

:19:16.:19:25.

He had a couple of years in and around the top 20, didn't he?

:19:26.:19:30.

That was on the line. That is 30-0. Querrey not put off by the testing

:19:31.:19:51.

of the PA system in the baseball stadium, I presume. This being

:19:52.:19:59.

played in a temporary setup in one corner of the field on the baseball

:20:00.:20:08.

park. So much for getting tight. He has played three excellent points,

:20:09.:20:12.

Sam Querrey, backed up by that excellent serve, getting himself in

:20:13.:20:17.

at position to dominate the rally. He has served well today.

:20:18.:20:32.

Querrey dominant on serve, and he reads, two sets to one. -- he leads.

:20:33.:20:43.

The big man is giving America hope in this tie, but Britain have done

:20:44.:20:51.

enough to suggest that an upset as possible over the weekend. This is

:20:52.:20:55.

one of eight world group first round ties, and here is how things stand

:20:56.:21:02.

at the end of day one, 1-1 between the Czech Republic and the

:21:03.:21:05.

Netherlands, Robin Haase and Tomas Berdych with victories, a good five

:21:06.:21:14.

set victory for Haas over Radek Stepanek.

:21:15.:21:25.

Now Spain, 2-0 down to Germany but they are without Nadal, the rare and

:21:26.:21:35.

Almagro. Call Schreiber taking full advantage. France 2-0 ahead against

:21:36.:21:42.

Australia thanks to Richard Gasquet and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. 1-1,

:21:43.:21:56.

Argentina -Italy. Kazakhstan ahead against Belgium. And Serbia without

:21:57.:22:05.

Novak Djokovic, trailing Switzerland 2-0. Federal back in the Swiss team

:22:06.:22:11.

alongside Australian Open Stanislas Wawrinka. -- Australian Open

:22:12.:22:20.

champion. If they can keep that line-up for the rest of the season

:22:21.:22:23.

there was no reason why Switzerland cannot win the Davis Cup for the

:22:24.:22:28.

first time. Which you could argue is the one thing missing from Roger

:22:29.:22:37.

Federer's CB. -- CV. I cannot understand why he does not play more

:22:38.:22:40.

than Davis Cup. For the last five years, Stanislas Wawrinka has been a

:22:41.:22:44.

world-class player and those two together could easily have won the

:22:45.:22:48.

Davis Cup, but it was not to be, and Roger Federer has picked his

:22:49.:22:54.

occasions to play, just to help them stay up, because he rarely plays the

:22:55.:22:58.

first round. Hopefully now he's back he will play throughout the whole

:22:59.:23:00.

year. And he won that game with Stanislas

:23:01.:23:10.

Wawrinka in the doubles. Settled for silver in London in 2012. Will he be

:23:11.:23:25.

there in Rio? I presume so. These pictures from San Diego, California,

:23:26.:23:29.

the venue for this Davis Cup tie between the USA and Great Britain,

:23:30.:23:35.

two proud nations in the Davis Cup, the 19th time they have met. They

:23:36.:23:40.

contested the first Davis Cup tie in 1900, when Dwight Davis lined up at

:23:41.:23:51.

the cricket club in Boston. In the 1930s they met regularly. The last

:23:52.:23:59.

match a famous contest from the Arena in Birmingham in 1999.

:24:00.:24:09.

Confirmation of those first-round ties there.

:24:10.:24:26.

As you can see, Italy and Argentina playing for the right to meet the

:24:27.:24:33.

winners of this one. Britain's first world group tie in five years.

:24:34.:24:43.

James Ward to start the fourth set, 2-1 down.

:24:44.:25:23.

No matter what level you player, you know the importance of starting sets

:25:24.:25:34.

well, especially against a big server that you have not broken yet.

:25:35.:27:36.

Not a spacious start to the fourth set from James Ward, unfortunately.

:27:37.:27:45.

A loose game. Just so annoying watching when you have put much work

:27:46.:27:50.

into that second, and again, he has just donated that game. Querrey did

:27:51.:27:56.

not earn it, he did not have to do anything to break, and that is the

:27:57.:28:00.

least you have to do at this level, is make your opponent then these

:28:01.:28:05.

games. It was a sloppy game. Strange to predict. He had that wonderful

:28:06.:28:09.

second set but the first and third were not good with errors, and there

:28:10.:28:12.

is that early break. It has been a brilliant this play of

:28:13.:28:35.

serving by Sam Querrey. He has been devastating, he really has.

:28:36.:28:48.

Well, nothing you can do about that! He could move his position on

:28:49.:28:59.

return. He has not had break point. He has played for two hours. Hasn't

:29:00.:29:06.

been able to achieve a break point against the big serve, so I not

:29:07.:29:15.

break down as well, and give him a different sight to look at?

:29:16.:29:23.

Absolutely no problem with the drop shot from James Ward. That has

:29:24.:29:40.

worked a treat. Unfortunately you cannot win the match on drop shots

:29:41.:29:42.

alone. Leading the way for the United

:29:43.:29:57.

States in the absence of his good buddy, John Isner who picked up an

:29:58.:30:05.

ankle injury a few weeks ago ago in Perth. He was here and ready to

:30:06.:30:10.

play, but realistically, never in contention. Certainly that was the

:30:11.:30:12.

word that has come out. He always hits the ball well when in

:30:13.:31:47.

the extended rallies. It is just developing the point and

:31:48.:31:52.

developing those rallies which has been the struggle.

:31:53.:32:23.

Credit to Querrey where it is due. He is moving his opponent more

:32:24.:33:00.

Just missed, but not by much, but enough. Another break point for the

:33:01.:33:13.

United States. If Querrey does win this at least we know the tie will

:33:14.:33:17.

definitely be alive going into the final day and the battle of the

:33:18.:33:22.

number ones. There is Britain's number one, Andy Murray and he would

:33:23.:33:28.

play Querrey on Sunday which could decide the tie.

:33:29.:34:29.

Once again, he digs himself out of the hole to claw on to the American.

:34:30.:34:40.

That was a must win game for Ward. He did well. He did very well there.

:34:41.:34:49.

Would you give Querrey any sort of chance against Murray, John? No.

:34:50.:34:56.

Ross? No. LAUGHTER

:34:57.:35:03.

I can't see it. I just can't - he is serving brilliantly, but he is

:35:04.:35:06.

playing against, if not the best returner in the serve certainly the

:35:07.:35:11.

first two or three and I just see him making way too many balls for

:35:12.:35:15.

Querrey and I can't see how he can beat him over five sets on clay. If

:35:16.:35:21.

we presume it is heading this way to 1-1 in the tie and if we are

:35:22.:35:25.

confidently predicting that Murray is going to win on the final day,

:35:26.:35:29.

that's 2-1 to Britain with the doubles in between. So if Britain

:35:30.:35:35.

can somehow win that, you see them winning the tie? If we win the

:35:36.:35:43.

double tomorrow, it is all over. When you have got Murray as the

:35:44.:35:47.

singles player, you know that's a banker and so others will have to

:35:48.:36:03.

win too. Will this be Andy Murray's biggest match in Davis Cup? I think

:36:04.:36:09.

it will be. That's tomorrow. You can see that tomorrow over on BBC Three

:36:10.:36:14.

from 8pm. I have a feeling that's going to be the best match of the

:36:15.:36:18.

tie. That's going to be a - it could be an epic doubles, I think.

:36:19.:37:15.

Brilliantly done. He has hit some good little dipping

:37:16.:37:24.

passing shots, Ward. He realised that Querrey isn't a great volleyer.

:37:25.:37:30.

He knows he will get a chance to pass on the next ball. He has got a

:37:31.:37:33.

big chance here. Is this the moment that Ward springs

:37:34.:38:01.

to life again in this match? Two break points. Well, the best tennis

:38:02.:38:09.

of the Brit is actually better. Querrey hasn't been regular enough.

:38:10.:38:22.

The first break points. That's a big forehand. Ward did well to nudge

:38:23.:38:33.

that back into court. He has got to cover the big one, you would have

:38:34.:38:34.

thought. Well, that serve has just got him

:38:35.:38:48.

out of trouble. Over and over again the first serve has been

:38:49.:38:49.

magnificent. Credit to Querrey. He holds on from

:38:50.:39:51.

15-40 in the game. He knows the importance of that, doesn't he? You

:39:52.:40:03.

can see it. There has been so many momentum swings in this match. They

:40:04.:40:09.

were so one directional to the US and then Ward coming back and the US

:40:10.:40:14.

again. It is almost tough to predict what's going to happen next.

:40:15.:42:16.

Well played. A good game from Ward. The forehand of Ward's has worked

:42:17.:42:28.

well today. He has hit it well. It is slightly up and down, actually

:42:29.:42:34.

his whole game is. It looks like he is hitting the ball better and more

:42:35.:42:39.

aggressively and more flight in the second and third set. He gets good

:42:40.:42:50.

purchase on the ball. Well, if you weren't with us on BBC Three

:42:51.:42:53.

earlier, you will have missed the excitement of the brass band that

:42:54.:42:58.

they've shipped in on freebies today. They were playing well today.

:42:59.:43:03.

It sounds like the lead trumpeter has had a funny five minutes, but

:43:04.:43:07.

anyway! They are attempting to get the crowd going. I don't think

:43:08.:43:11.

anything will get the crowd going by the look of some of them. They have

:43:12.:43:15.

settled in for the weekend! It looks as if it is getting quite chilly out

:43:16.:43:19.

there as well. There has been a lot of wind and we've been hearing that

:43:20.:43:22.

on the microphones, haven't we, John? Yes. I don't think I have

:43:23.:43:32.

heard music like this at a Davis Cup match. It is not the ra-ra-ra you

:43:33.:43:39.

would expect. No. I quite like the idea of it. It is different to the

:43:40.:43:49.

anthems and melodies they normally play.

:43:50.:45:20.

Familiar tale on the Querrey serve. It flashed by that game, 4-2.

:45:21.:45:33.

Nothing he could do. Sometimes break points are squandered.

:45:34.:45:47.

The Querrey coach in the bottom left.

:45:48.:47:00.

That has just been pushed wide by Ward and he knows it. Not called by

:47:01.:47:06.

the line judge, but the umpire, all over that.

:47:07.:47:10.

15-30. Big point coming up here, that's for sure.

:47:11.:47:46.

Ward just holding on and trying to keep in touch.

:47:47.:48:26.

Well, it might not save him in this match, but the sort of shot that

:48:27.:48:32.

gives you hope that if it comes down to a fifth and final rubber that

:48:33.:48:40.

Ward has the ammunition to do damage to Donald Young. I do not think

:48:41.:48:45.

there was any doubt about that, in glimpses we have seen, he can

:48:46.:48:50.

certainly hurt Donald Young but he has got to avoid these dips that he

:48:51.:48:53.

has. Because Donald Young is going to get a lot of balls back. He has

:48:54.:48:58.

certainly got the pace and power to cause an upset there, no question

:48:59.:49:02.

about it. He has played well at times. It is just, the consistency

:49:03.:49:10.

has not been the enough. And seeing Andy Murray down there, he will be

:49:11.:49:17.

dissecting the Querrey game. He loves to watch tennis, he watches a

:49:18.:49:24.

lot of tennis and works at opponents, just little tips that he

:49:25.:49:30.

can pick up on and think back when he is in difficult situations in

:49:31.:49:34.

matches, he knows where Querrey likes to serve, and where he tends

:49:35.:49:38.

to hit those big shots and rely on, so invaluable knowledge Andy will be

:49:39.:49:45.

picking up. That is all in his mind, or does he have a little black book?

:49:46.:49:50.

It is in his mind. Querrey will do the same thing as he did five user

:49:51.:49:55.

go on big points, more often than not. -- as he did five years ago.

:49:56.:50:02.

That is one way to silence the crowd. He has been going wide to

:50:03.:50:09.

that forehand side a lot and that time Ward picked it.

:50:10.:50:21.

He has got away with that. If you hit the tape with such power,

:50:22.:50:30.

chances are, it is going to fly over.

:50:31.:50:51.

I was hoping he would give us a little nod there.

:50:52.:51:14.

He has served well when he has been down in games, not that many service

:51:15.:51:27.

games, mind you, but he has had some 15-30 s and a big first service in,

:51:28.:51:30.

almost every time. He had a 15-40 in the last service

:51:31.:51:36.

game, too. 30-40. Where is he going to serve

:51:37.:51:47.

this serve? First time on a break point on his

:51:48.:52:19.

second serve. Oh, no. He has got to keep that in court. In a match of

:52:20.:52:31.

few chances, that is a bad miss. On his favoured side, too.

:52:32.:52:48.

You always know you have got a chance when Querrey comes in, if you

:52:49.:52:55.

can just make him play. Unconvincing, to say the least.

:52:56.:53:08.

Yes, there it is. Ward breaks for the first time in the match.

:53:09.:53:19.

It has been coming. He has hung in there so well, throughout this

:53:20.:53:34.

match, Ward, the team on their feet. Querrey must have thought that this

:53:35.:53:40.

was over, with Ward missing, and here we are level, in the fourth.

:53:41.:55:10.

Hard enough time with that mishit, but in the end, he has guided that

:55:11.:55:26.

very effectively, cross court on the half volley. It kind of looks easy

:55:27.:55:31.

in slow motion, but it is anything but.

:55:32.:55:55.

That was the first one really that Ward, he telegraphed that one, it

:55:56.:56:34.

was too deliberate and Querrey knew he was going to do this. He was onto

:56:35.:56:36.

it very quickly. Another first serve for Ward after

:56:37.:56:58.

the correction from the umpire. That was a very well constructive

:56:59.:58:04.

point from Ward, but Querrey hung in there, so well. -- Welk instructed

:58:05.:58:18.

-- well constructed. Where is this noise coming from? This is the first

:58:19.:58:22.

time in the day, isn't it? Banning on the line. -- Bang on the

:58:23.:58:39.

line. That one, he popped it straight down the T.

:58:40.:59:08.

Well, well, well, 5-4, great written, from a break down. -- Great

:59:09.:59:19.

Britain. Certainly, the pressure is on Sam Querrey now, coming up to

:59:20.:59:22.

serve, to stay in this set. He really should have won this set

:59:23.:59:33.

by now, Querrey, the chances he has had, and credit to Ward for hanging

:59:34.:59:42.

in. Who knows what is about to happen? So unpredictable. A good

:59:43.:59:51.

effort from Ward. Very good. He has played well in patches. When the

:59:52.:59:56.

ball is on court, being able to let loose on the forehand and backhand,

:59:57.:00:01.

he has hit the ball very well. Just his technique, his concentration

:00:02.:00:06.

lapses, sometimes costing too much, and that is the only thing that Leon

:00:07.:00:12.

would be telling him, keep the ball in court, keep trusting your shots,

:00:13.:00:18.

keep playing how we know you can play, how you have played for parts

:00:19.:00:23.

of this match. And getting that chat with his team captain now is key,

:00:24.:00:28.

isn't it? If he could just win this game, you have got to feel that

:00:29.:00:32.

Britain are one set away from winning the entire time. Absolutely.

:00:33.:00:40.

If sandbox. The pressure on this man. -- Ifs and buts.

:00:41.:00:55.

Hello! Great D, defence. That's a sliding squash court forehand.

:00:56.:01:18.

No, that's wide. The play has fallen apart here. What a turn around from

:01:19.:01:26.

4-2. Marvellous defence. He has got three

:01:27.:02:06.

set points almost from nowhere. Unbelievable. Querrey was in

:02:07.:02:15.

complete control, wasn't he? And the world number 175 from North London

:02:16.:02:21.

now has three set points to take us into a fifth and final set here.

:02:22.:02:29.

Didn't see this coming. Wow. Wow. We are on for a fifth set

:02:30.:04:23.

finale. So a fantastic day of tennis here in San Diego. Well played,

:04:24.:04:29.

James Ward. That's a brilliant comeback in that fourth set and the

:04:30.:04:32.

Americans frankly look shell-shocked. He fought so hard

:04:33.:04:37.

here. He kept the ball in court. Played the scoreboard well. Look how

:04:38.:04:45.

much it means to him. He defended mg nif icantly. The -- magnificently.

:04:46.:04:52.

The last few games, he has been digging up shots with no right to

:04:53.:04:58.

get back in play. Querrey looked as if it was a foregone conclusion. He

:04:59.:05:02.

had chances and didn't take it and now the pressure is totally on this

:05:03.:05:10.

man here. If he loses this set, he knows his team are basically out of

:05:11.:05:17.

it. Ross, this is one of the biggest sets in British Davis Cup recent

:05:18.:05:22.

history, isn't it? This is it. This is the tie here in this set. It is

:05:23.:05:27.

exactly. We knew that Murray would win the first match comfortably and

:05:28.:05:35.

now Querrey, we expect well, many would have expected him to win this

:05:36.:05:41.

match and Ward's level has been better than Querrey's and he hasn't

:05:42.:05:47.

managed to maintain it, but he played superbly in the latter stages

:05:48.:05:53.

of the third and fourth set. He needs to stay tough and to do

:05:54.:05:58.

exactly what got him to this position. Building the rally.

:05:59.:06:03.

Staying in the point. He doesn't want to go down an early break

:06:04.:06:10.

again. It is almost like his concentration goes and he had a huge

:06:11.:06:14.

lift here. The adrenalin is pumping. He has to pull back a little bit and

:06:15.:06:20.

just stay focussed, but not get too excited and blasting the ball

:06:21.:06:23.

because as you say quite rightly so, when he gets in these rallies and

:06:24.:06:27.

when he doesn't throw in the bunches of bag errors, he is matching

:06:28.:06:31.

Querrey at the back of the court and a lot of the times better than him.

:06:32.:06:41.

The coach, what seems to be a crucial time to talk to your player,

:06:42.:06:46.

off he has gone. He has gone to the rest room. Maybe he has got to make

:06:47.:06:50.

a TV feature for somebody, I don't know! Very strange! But anyway, this

:06:51.:06:57.

is a very significant set of tennis we are about to witness here. We

:06:58.:07:05.

have gone midnight, yes, it is just after 4pm in the afternoon out in

:07:06.:07:09.

San Diego. The last British win against the United States in the

:07:10.:07:14.

Davis Cup just to remind you, 1935, that was on grass at Wimbledon

:07:15.:07:29.

thanks to Austin and Perry. We are talking about a sizeable chunk of

:07:30.:07:32.

history here if Britain can win this weekend. Ward's, points won, 81%. It

:07:33.:07:50.

is almost double the winners off the forehand side for Ward. You wouldn't

:07:51.:07:58.

have expected that. That's for sure. So the fifth and final set. No

:07:59.:08:03.

tie-break. Like at Wimbledon, they will go on and on if necessary. And

:08:04.:08:10.

still no USA captain. It is such a strange sport this.

:08:11.:08:29.

There is so much conflict of interest in this sport of tennis.

:08:30.:08:33.

People with various hats. People seem incapable of wearing just one

:08:34.:08:38.

hat in the sport of tennis! What's wrong with their hat? That's what I

:08:39.:08:48.

want to know! As Ward starts this set really

:08:49.:09:15.

impressive. Well done, James. Knock him down

:09:16.:09:41.

while he is wobbling. Why not? That's the trouble when you wear

:09:42.:09:45.

that fancy suit, you can't run on the court. He is in no rush. He

:09:46.:09:50.

can't get there quickly. If he had a normal tracksuit on, he could have

:09:51.:09:55.

belted along ready to say some words of wisdom. This player needs some

:09:56.:10:00.

words of wisdom right now. His shoulders are getting very heavy

:10:01.:10:07.

about now. His captaincy style is to play it

:10:08.:10:11.

cool and to chat away and keep things relaxed on the bench and you

:10:12.:10:15.

wonder if that's going to have to change and whether he is going to

:10:16.:10:19.

have to start talking tough. This is a match Querrey should have got done

:10:20.:10:27.

by now. He is not going to do it with shots

:10:28.:10:33.

like that. It is a wobbly, creaky performance from the American at the

:10:34.:10:34.

moment. He is putting more first serves back

:10:35.:11:04.

into play. He is reading it better now, isn't he? Even the ground

:11:05.:11:10.

strokes he seems to be able to pick where Querrey is going to hit the

:11:11.:11:12.

next ball. Well, Ward has done one thing

:11:13.:12:05.

exceptionally today is use the angle on his forehand to drag the big man

:12:06.:12:11.

off the centre of the court. He has been profited with big success. Two

:12:12.:12:20.

break points for Britain. The first saved in emphatic style.

:12:21.:12:46.

Well, I'm not too sure Querrey can believe what is happening out here.

:12:47.:13:05.

A complete turn around. 4-2 up in the fourth set leading 2-1. Now he

:13:06.:13:13.

is two love down in the fifth. At 4-2 Jonathan he hadn't faced break

:13:14.:13:17.

point up until then and now three breaks in a row against Ward.

:13:18.:13:31.

Amazing. That serve has been so effective out wide to the forehand.

:13:32.:13:43.

So how many out wides did you score? He can draw on that experience of

:13:44.:14:15.

that victory in Coventry last year. Five sets kept that tie alive.

:14:16.:14:26.

That's on the line. It is punishing shots from Ward. There is an air of

:14:27.:14:33.

confidence about his game right now. Speaking to Lyon Smith on the phone

:14:34.:14:37.

last night, there was an air of confidence certainly from the

:14:38.:14:39.

captain about this match-up. It worked again that back shot

:14:40.:15:12.

tactic. There is Leon Smith. He knows his stuff.

:15:13.:15:37.

Everything and anything for the Brit. Really getting behind James

:15:38.:15:57.

Ward. He has got a great voice on him and he does not care who is

:15:58.:16:02.

around, he will scream and shout for the British team. Lots of comments

:16:03.:16:16.

coming in on social media. Use the hashtag #bbctennis if you want to

:16:17.:16:19.

get in touch. I am sure that those of you are

:16:20.:16:31.

still watching at 20 past midnight. -- loads of you. Late-night action

:16:32.:16:38.

from San Diego, the significance of which we cannot overstate. If Ward

:16:39.:16:43.

can complete this victory Britain will be 2-0 up in the tie with a

:16:44.:16:48.

chance to seal it tomorrow either in the doubles or the reverse singles

:16:49.:16:53.

featuring Andy Murray on Sunday. The chance for a famous win in

:16:54.:17:00.

America's backyard, on clay, to reach the quarterfinals of the Davis

:17:01.:17:03.

Cup. That is what we are dealing with here. And you have got to say,

:17:04.:17:09.

at the moment, it is all thanks to this man.

:17:10.:17:31.

Querrey has gone to pieces. This is what the Davis Cup can do. The

:17:32.:17:39.

rankings sometimes go out of the window. Ward is playing the match of

:17:40.:17:45.

his life considering the circumstances and Querrey is

:17:46.:17:46.

choking. He is just playing out of his mind

:17:47.:18:15.

now. Incredible quality from Ward. Seven games on the bounds, trying to

:18:16.:18:21.

break Querrey for the fourth time in a row. -- on the bounce.

:18:22.:18:31.

Oh, ho-ho! He is saving his best till last as that match clock ticks

:18:32.:18:41.

towards three hours. James Ward is producing a fantastic form is for

:18:42.:18:45.

his country. Completely against the odds. -- fantastic performance. He

:18:46.:19:00.

has got him! Ho-ho-ho! That is scarcely believable. Eight games in

:19:01.:19:07.

a row. The whole thing seems to add up. Laughing in the middle of the

:19:08.:19:14.

fourth set, he was so relaxed, and now, Ward is flying. James Ward, if

:19:15.:19:19.

he wins this match, which I think he will do now, obviously, he should

:19:20.:19:30.

just get a tape of this match and watch it every night before a big

:19:31.:19:38.

match. It is terrific, isn't it? The next changeover could well be the

:19:39.:19:45.

last. You wonder whether the captain, Tim Curry, is -- Courier,

:19:46.:19:56.

is going to start earning his sizeable pay packet. There will be

:19:57.:20:02.

questions about his choice of venue and surface if this match goes the

:20:03.:20:04.

wrong way for him. You have been there, you have been a

:20:05.:20:33.

Davis Cup captain. Is there any point being cool and calm when your

:20:34.:20:38.

man has lost eight games in a row? He needs a rocket, doesn't he? Yes.

:20:39.:20:43.

He has got to do something different.

:20:44.:21:00.

We can just see the nerves, he could easily have got round and hit a

:21:01.:21:11.

forehand on that one but he elected to let the ball coming to him and he

:21:12.:21:12.

mishit backhand. Bit of a slow movement there, James.

:21:13.:21:57.

For all his recent brilliance, still two games away, and this, the break

:21:58.:22:05.

that chance for Querrey. -- break-back.

:22:06.:22:11.

I don't believe that. That was an ugly looking backhand, too. Didn't

:22:12.:22:46.

hit that well, got lucky with it. One of the breaks retrieved, but

:22:47.:22:58.

more importantly, Ross, he has broken that sequence. First game in

:22:59.:23:06.

nine for the big American. Ward was on a roll, and if it was not for the

:23:07.:23:11.

American thing his game and getting a little bit fortunate this game

:23:12.:23:15.

would be over in a few more minutes, but it is difficult to close out

:23:16.:23:20.

matches. The toughest game to win is always the last one, especially in

:23:21.:23:25.

America, in the Davis Cup. You trained so hard to get to that

:23:26.:23:30.

position and work so hard for 3.5 hours, it could be. James Ward needs

:23:31.:23:36.

that little bit of a push. To keep trying to extend the lead, but take

:23:37.:23:41.

your time off the gas. That is what the captain will be telling him

:23:42.:23:46.

right now. He has emerged as a significant Davis Cup player. You

:23:47.:23:51.

have been in the team for the last few years and there was time towards

:23:52.:23:55.

the end of John's captaincy when we were struggling. We were struggling

:23:56.:24:00.

to find players who could step up to the plate to win singles matches for

:24:01.:24:03.

great written. Andy Murray said it himself full stop when there was a

:24:04.:24:10.

good number to, he would feel more encouraged to play again. That is

:24:11.:24:15.

why he is here, because he feels like his number two is back.

:24:16.:24:25.

Ward has been onto the Querrey first serve, shifting his position well,

:24:26.:24:33.

getting a lot more balls back on the court, and that is what has

:24:34.:24:36.

surprised the American. He is not used to getting so many balls back.

:24:37.:24:42.

He is forcing Querrey to do that every point.

:24:43.:24:57.

Querrey has been a top 50 player for so long. He can close matches like

:24:58.:25:08.

this out and think, I fancy myself, but before that, no, but if he gets

:25:09.:25:10.

to 4-2. He has just got to keep the lid on

:25:11.:25:32.

his emotions, Ward. Oh, dear. The giant head.

:25:33.:25:47.

Well played. That was just an exquisite point. The guide to

:25:48.:26:06.

backhand drop shots will be in all good retailers by Christmas, and it

:26:07.:26:07.

is by James Ward. Is that significant, Ross, that the

:26:08.:26:31.

comeback in this game, this would be zipped away in Querrey's favour, and

:26:32.:26:40.

Ward is reminding him, as he has done the whole match, all the match,

:26:41.:26:49.

he has been gutsy, he has stayed close, he has never let his opponent

:26:50.:26:51.

get too far away. That was an edgy steered backhand

:26:52.:27:07.

that just came up on the ball. Even with Querrey's experience he will be

:27:08.:27:12.

thinking about how this is supposed to be a guaranteed. And those

:27:13.:27:17.

thoughts, no matter where you are, they still come into your head.

:27:18.:27:33.

The twists in the latter part of this match are unbelievable. You

:27:34.:27:41.

wouldn't have thought that Ward would come back from 4-2 down in the

:27:42.:27:49.

fourth set. We haven't had served since 4-2, against one of the

:27:50.:27:56.

biggest serves in world tennis. And James Ward, the son of a London

:27:57.:28:01.

cabbie, Arsenal fan, 175 in the world, is about to serve for the

:28:02.:28:04.

match. And, as games go, this is right up

:28:05.:28:20.

there, right up there. From a British Davis Cup point of view,

:28:21.:28:24.

this is pretty much unknown territory. One of the best away

:28:25.:28:30.

performances of all time, for someone of his ranking, going up

:28:31.:28:38.

against who he is going up against, it is quite amazing, given the

:28:39.:28:40.

position he was in. Leon Smith. What a job he has done,

:28:41.:28:56.

the young captain of this team. It is one of those nights, isn't

:28:57.:29:27.

it? But a couple of points, sitting back in your chair, and you have got

:29:28.:29:31.

to move forward a little bit. This one, right to the edge.

:29:32.:29:55.

Yes! Ward has done it again. Forehand down the line. There is

:29:56.:30:10.

Jim, the London cabby, in the crowd. He must be very nervous, but they

:30:11.:30:13.

proud right now. Two points away. After three hours and ten minutes of

:30:14.:30:35.

topsy-turvy tennis, James Ward has the chance, the match point to score

:30:36.:30:39.

the win of his life. That is one of the best victories

:30:40.:31:07.

you are ever going to see in Davis Cup. James Ward, fantastic from 2-1

:31:08.:31:17.

down and a breakdown in the fourth. -- a break down in the fourth and

:31:18.:31:23.

Britain on clay away to the United States lead two love and are one

:31:24.:31:28.

match away from winning on clay against the United States for the

:31:29.:31:34.

first time in 81 years. And you have got to say that the United States

:31:35.:31:40.

have blown their banker in this tie. That was the match they had to win.

:31:41.:31:46.

Big smiles from Murray, but wasn't it interesting the reaction of the

:31:47.:31:50.

captain, Leon Smith? No real celebration. A hug for Ward. He knew

:31:51.:31:55.

it. Just got the sense that he believed this was a good match-up.

:31:56.:32:00.

That's why he selected Ward. It is why he put his faith in him. To go

:32:01.:32:05.

and get the result out here for Britain. So the simple situation is

:32:06.:32:12.

that if Britain win tomorrow's doubles they will win this tie and

:32:13.:32:16.

they will move into the quarter-finals of the Davis Cup.

:32:17.:32:21.

What an amazing achievement that would be.

:32:22.:32:30.

I think everyone in San Diego is in complete shock at the way their

:32:31.:32:35.

number one player failed to complete that victory. Credit to James Ward.

:32:36.:32:37.

What a comeback. Well, all you can ask is for a

:32:38.:32:51.

player not to be intimidated to have the heart for battle. James Ward had

:32:52.:32:57.

it all. What a win from Britain's number two player. It means that

:32:58.:33:02.

Britain is two up against the United States after the opening day.

:33:03.:33:07.

Earlier, this evening Andy Murray, well straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 up

:33:08.:33:13.

against Donald Young of the United States. A wonderful win for Andy

:33:14.:33:18.

Murray. Boy, the big talking point of this match is going to be James

:33:19.:33:30.

Ward's win over Sam Querrey. So Britain are to up. Wow, I just can't

:33:31.:33:37.

imagine what that was like. You watch the first set and you think

:33:38.:33:41.

this is the same story as Donald Young and to have the guts to stay

:33:42.:33:48.

with it. What an amazing performance. An incredible

:33:49.:33:52.

performance from Ward. He defended well and never let Querrey get away

:33:53.:33:57.

from him. At the end of the fourth we thought it was all over and

:33:58.:34:01.

suddenly eight games on the bounce and Ward is flying. His best was

:34:02.:34:06.

incredible. Very, very high standards and he is a Davis Cup

:34:07.:34:09.

player and he loves Davis Cup. Well, you have sat in that chair as Davis

:34:10.:34:14.

Cup captain. That's all you need from a player exactly what James

:34:15.:34:18.

gave and particularly in the last set? It was gutsy. It shows you that

:34:19.:34:23.

Davis Cup is all about when you get somebody like James Ward ranked

:34:24.:34:29.

lower and comes up against a player of Sam Querrey's class. He gets

:34:30.:34:34.

beaten and hangs in there and James Ward is a Davis Cup player. Some

:34:35.:34:39.

players play above their ranking and some play below it. He is playing

:34:40.:34:51.

above his rating. Why doesn't he do that all the time? Now, he proved he

:34:52.:34:56.

can beat, you know, world-class players on the clay? Well, as we

:34:57.:35:01.

were saying in the rallies, when he was going toe-to-toe with Sam

:35:02.:35:04.

Querrey, he was staying with him and was better than him. The only be

:35:05.:35:07.

thing that Sam Querrey, the difference was, he was serving

:35:08.:35:11.

better at the time Sam Querrey and getting free points on his serve,

:35:12.:35:15.

but other than that Ward was with him the whole way. He should get a

:35:16.:35:19.

copy of that film and watch it every single night before he plays a

:35:20.:35:23.

match. It shows what he can do. Producing tennis from a different

:35:24.:35:27.

planet. I wonder if he can string a sentence together? Let's find out.

:35:28.:35:34.

Here he is talking to Russell Fuller. This must be the greatest

:35:35.:35:38.

performance, the greatest victory of your life? It is. Sam is ranked

:35:39.:35:46.

pretty high. The win in Russia was a massive win for me and I hope to use

:35:47.:35:50.

it and push on from here, you know. I love playing Davis Cup. I love

:35:51.:35:55.

playing for my country and it shows in the performances. There were

:35:56.:35:57.

times when you were really up against it, particularly the fourth

:35:58.:36:01.

set when you came back from a break down. Did you always believe you had

:36:02.:36:07.

a chance against somebody with a powerful weapon as that serve? I

:36:08.:36:12.

think I did. I played him in the past and I beat him in tough sets. I

:36:13.:36:17.

knew I had give myself a break. At one point in the third and fourth,

:36:18.:36:21.

he was serving unbelievable I could hardly get near him. I dug in well

:36:22.:36:29.

and held serve which was key. It didn't make any sense because you

:36:30.:36:35.

couldn't get anies break points and -- any break points and suddenly you

:36:36.:36:42.

get some in a you row? It was a great win. I played well. I dug in

:36:43.:36:47.

and I gave myself a chance and in the end it work. And how do you see

:36:48.:36:52.

the tie going now? If the doubles goes well tomorrow, you might get

:36:53.:36:56.

Sunday off? That would be nice. Maybe stick one of the support staff

:36:57.:37:06.

in. The Bryan brothers are a great team. I back Andy to do the job

:37:07.:37:11.

against Sam on under. If it comes to it, I will be ready again to play.

:37:12.:37:16.

We are going to bring in your captain, are Leon Smith, the man who

:37:17.:37:19.

made one of the best selection decisions of all time. I know you

:37:20.:37:23.

have got so much time for what James has done in Davis Cup in the past

:37:24.:37:27.

and I am sure you were one of the ones in the stadium who believed he

:37:28.:37:31.

could win this match? That's why he got pick at the end of the day. I

:37:32.:37:36.

don't want to take any credit whatsoever, it is down to James. I

:37:37.:37:40.

just sit there. He put in an amazing effort and I'm very proud of him. He

:37:41.:37:45.

looked like he was staring at defeat there, but he came back strongly and

:37:46.:37:50.

he kept believing in himself. We kept talking about trying to be the

:37:51.:37:54.

aggressor, trying to be the boss on the court, when he stepped up and

:37:55.:37:59.

got more offensive, he won a lot of the points when he put Querrey on

:38:00.:38:02.

the back foot. Maybe when he was down a little bit, he was being too

:38:03.:38:06.

passive, but that's the great thing about how brave he has been today.

:38:07.:38:09.

He has been courageous and he stepped up and that's what counts.

:38:10.:38:16.

He looks a lot fresher than you. You look emotionally drained. Give us an

:38:17.:38:21.

idea of what goes into captaining a side? Thank you for your compliment!

:38:22.:38:26.

You are sitting there and obviously sometimes I look calm. Maybe you I

:38:27.:38:32.

showed a little bit more today, yeah, I mean, every point counts and

:38:33.:38:36.

you are going through the emotions. You are trying to stay there calm,

:38:37.:38:40.

but inside your mind is ticking over and over drive and you have got to

:38:41.:38:46.

make sure when he comes towards you that you don't look hacked off or

:38:47.:38:50.

too excited either, you have got to control your emotions. That's

:38:51.:38:53.

tiring, but you are staring at tennis balls for hours on end and

:38:54.:38:58.

you are not taking your eye off the ball. It is tiring. It is a great

:38:59.:39:02.

start to the week. We are designed for this, 100%, but last April, we

:39:03.:39:10.

were 2-0 down and we came back. So having learnt from that, we won't

:39:11.:39:13.

sit there and think this tie is over, not when you start by playing

:39:14.:39:18.

the best doubles team who graced the court. There is a lot of tennis to

:39:19.:39:21.

be played here and we will make sure we will play it properly. And no

:39:22.:39:27.

reason to change your selection for tomorrow? That's a conversation I

:39:28.:39:35.

will have with the guys tomorrow morning. We will see how the team

:39:36.:39:39.

feels about it. Well done and well done to you, James. A memorable

:39:40.:39:43.

moment in British tennis history. Well played. Thank you very much.

:39:44.:39:47.

Well, of course, there are questions about the doubles. Of course, that

:39:48.:39:52.

will go on, but boy, James seems so relaxed. Just such a huge win. Is he

:39:53.:39:56.

just still in the zone or is that just the way he is? I think that's

:39:57.:40:00.

the way he is. He is a relaxed guyment he loves playing Davis Cup

:40:01.:40:03.

and he is very confident in himself. We talked in comment free about

:40:04.:40:07.

James having self-belief even when he was battered after the first set.

:40:08.:40:11.

He knows his level is good and he knows that he raises his game for

:40:12.:40:16.

Davis Cup and that's what he did today. He raised it in a big way

:40:17.:40:21.

compared to his week to week level. Come on James, let's push on. Let's

:40:22.:40:26.

take those performances and wins which you have in Davis Cup. He is a

:40:27.:40:35.

top 20 player and now he is top 50. Fantastic win away from home. I

:40:36.:40:39.

can't tell you how good that win is. It is fantastic for Ward. But on the

:40:40.:40:44.

other side of the coin, there is Sam Querrey who has got a lot of

:40:45.:40:48.

questions to answer and for Jim Courier. This will be a tough

:40:49.:40:52.

evening for them? There will be a lot of questions asked at the end of

:40:53.:40:55.

this match about his decision to play on clay as well. He will get

:40:56.:40:59.

stick about that because it turned out to be the wrong decision and he

:41:00.:41:02.

has got a lot of work to do tonight because his team are in an almost

:41:03.:41:07.

impossible situation with Andy Murray staring at them on the last

:41:08.:41:12.

day even if they win the doubles. Let's take you through the most

:41:13.:41:16.

important parts of a match. We were sitting here on this final game,

:41:17.:41:21.

15-30 thinking gosh, you don't want to let Querrey back into the match.

:41:22.:41:26.

You still want James to be so positive to keep hitting, but we

:41:27.:41:31.

wondered would he have the belief to do it? But boy, he brought out one

:41:32.:41:37.

bullet shot after another. Look at that! He was so loose at the end of

:41:38.:41:42.

this match. He was swinging from the hills and he was hitting the ball so

:41:43.:41:46.

well. When the points were extended, he was looking unbeatable. It was

:41:47.:41:50.

when he was making early errors in the rallies and the concentration

:41:51.:41:54.

was dipping, but when he was playing well, when he was loose and openly

:41:55.:41:57.

beating Querrey from corner to corner and making the big man move,

:41:58.:42:04.

there only looked like one win arer -- winner and Ward was in great

:42:05.:42:09.

form. He hit more forehand winners than

:42:10.:42:14.

Querrey. Particularly the first set, there were a lot of errors and

:42:15.:42:18.

everything and how he was able to turn it around. It is all about

:42:19.:42:24.

momentum, isn't it? He has got the momentum, but he has to win the last

:42:25.:42:28.

point and this is the toughest point to win and he needed to stay strong.

:42:29.:42:34.

To stay positive. He did. He is an inexperienced five set player, but

:42:35.:42:41.

such a good five set player. Look at the win! That's a very muted

:42:42.:42:52.

response, but I suppose Leon thinks, "I have still got work to do." We

:42:53.:42:57.

thought that James would do well and we thought he could be competitive,

:42:58.:43:01.

but I think all of us felt that Querrey was going to come out the

:43:02.:43:05.

winner of this one, but boy, when you can produce tennis like that. He

:43:06.:43:09.

is capable of beating many of them in the Davis Cup and other

:43:10.:43:13.

tournaments as well. Look at that, what an opening day. Great Britain

:43:14.:43:18.

is two up. It is the doubles. We are not sure who is playing as far as

:43:19.:43:25.

Britain is concern, but it will be the Bryan brothers and then the day

:43:26.:43:30.

with the second singles, but as far as the doubles are concerned, Andy

:43:31.:43:34.

could really have a day off if he wanted it, but he is a bit of a

:43:35.:43:38.

competitor as well? He is. He is probably the most competitor that I

:43:39.:43:41.

know. I think it would be smart for him not to play on the Saturday, for

:43:42.:43:45.

the sake of the team, for Great Britain, for the way he will feel on

:43:46.:43:49.

Sunday. They are not favourites in the doubles match anyway. Why not,

:43:50.:43:54.

"Let's go for the last day and get the win against Sam requester

:43:55.:44:01.

Querrey?" -- Sam Querrey?" We will have more tomorrow at 8pm on BBC

:44:02.:44:04.

Three. Bye-bye. Last year, the earth opened up

:44:05.:45:07.

and swallowed a man as he slept. Horizon finds out

:45:08.:45:11.

what causes sinkholes. So the wait is over, and the weight

:45:12.:45:46.

is very much about to go on. Put your pinnies on,

:45:47.:45:51.

grease those tins, put on your comfortable

:45:52.:45:53.

baking mules, in honour of a batch

:45:54.:45:55.

of brand-new home bakers. Mary Berry's

:45:56.:45:59.

been sharpening her knives and Paul Hollywood has been

:46:00.:46:01.

sharpening his hair quiff, with the aid of some cow gum

:46:02.:46:03.

and whale grease. They're about to be unleashed

:46:04.:46:05.

on this baker's dozen. That's right. For 2013, we've got 13 new bakers,

:46:06.:46:08.

but only one will emerge victorious. Welcome to the

:46:09.:46:15.

Great British Bake Off. This year,

:46:16.:46:17.

over 10,000 people applied, It's a bit like waking up

:46:18.:46:21.

on Christmas Day, coupled with potentially that

:46:22.:46:25.

I was going to have to do an exam. 13 of the best home bakers from

:46:26.:46:29.

across the country I hope I just don't get

:46:30.:46:34.

too fazed by things, and remember that this is something

:46:35.:46:38.

that I do, literally, all of their baking skills

:46:39.:46:41.

will be put to the test. I don't want to be the guy

:46:42.:46:48.

that everyone is screaming at on the telly,

:46:49.:46:50.

"Why on Earth did you do THAT?!" And this year's judges,

:46:51.:46:53.

Paul and Mary... Four hours to do this is enough.

:46:54.:46:56.

..are taking the Bake Off... Yes, I'm not very organised at

:46:57.:47:00.

this point. ..to a whole new level. It'd be good if I could say

:47:01.:47:04.

that I wasn't scared of Paul, but that wouldn't

:47:05.:47:08.

really be the truth! I'm more nervous

:47:09.:47:11.

about Mary, actually. Every week, they'll set

:47:12.:47:13.

three brand-new challenges... ..designed to reveal who has

:47:14.:47:17.

the natural baking instinct... I don't know to what extent

:47:18.:47:23.

one should whisk. Wanting to pull out all the stops,

:47:24.:47:25.

or squirrels, in my case. Slightly doolally. These are

:47:26.:47:30.

optimal conditions for Bake Off. Those who fall short

:47:31.:47:43.

will have to leave. It'll be a tragedy

:47:44.:47:46.

if his head falls off. Those who excel... Success!

:47:47.:47:48.

..will be named star baker. Please. Please.

:47:49.:47:52.

But who will make it through... If my bottom is dry today,

:47:53.:47:56.

all will be right with the world. Don't be sad.

:47:57.:48:00.

You've got such a long way to go. Please don't break,

:48:01.:48:04.

please don't break. Which do you think is the one

:48:05.:48:10.

who's travelled furthest? Sooty's done

:48:11.:48:47.

the most walking around. What we're seeing here on the screen

:48:48.:48:49.

is the very first indication we've ever have had of the detail

:48:50.:48:53.

of the pet cat's life Billy travelled on this excursion

:48:54.:48:56.

up to the farm and back, but Sooty may not have ranged

:48:57.:49:01.

quite as far, I think the fact

:49:02.:49:04.

that we have got 50 GPS collars on cats in this village

:49:05.:49:09.

is fantastic, because one cat's behaviour

:49:10.:49:12.

will influence another's, undoubtedly, when they're sharing

:49:13.:49:15.

the same physical space. Thomas is active three times. After

:49:16.:49:17.

dawn, then in the early afternoon and then a big burst of activity

:49:18.:49:24.

in the evening - 10, 11 o'clock. and so many things

:49:25.:49:28.

could have gone wrong. They don't seem to have done so,

:49:29.:49:32.

so far, so I'm really pleased

:49:33.:49:34.

and really excited about what we'll see over the

:49:35.:49:36.

next week and what data we'll get. It'll be nice to see, as we go

:49:37.:49:39.

over the whole week, we're not seeing just after one day,

:49:40.:49:42.

won't it? Oh, yeah. So what are the cats

:49:43.:49:47.

actually getting up to In order to find out, the BBC's

:50:05.:50:16.

and Alia Sheikh, who developed the camera,

:50:17.:50:18.

are out to test a prototype. That's clever.

:50:19.:50:23.

Is it recording now? Yes. Is it? The cat's welfare

:50:24.:50:33.

is the first priority. The cameras are very light

:50:34.:50:37.

and will be fitted onto quick release collars,

:50:38.:50:40.

in case they get caught up. We'll give him a bit of fuss.

:50:41.:50:45.

That's lovely. You're a good boy.

:50:46.:50:49.

Such a good boy. Are you wanting to go outside and we

:50:50.:50:55.

can see what you do with that camera? And then connected to the

:50:56.:51:08.

GPS collars, so that we can see exactly

:51:09.:51:23.

where cats are and exactly

:51:24.:51:27.

what they're looking at. We've chosen 14 cats

:51:28.:51:33.

to put cameras on and soon, the world through

history, for the very first time, we have created underground

:52:15.:52:19.

burrows for burrowing animals, most complex

:52:20.:52:23.

and most ambitious ever built. We can watch badgers, rabbits,

:52:24.:52:29.

water voles and moles behaving entirely naturally and this

:52:30.:52:34.

is offering us a unique insight into the secret lives

:52:35.:52:38.

of these subterranean species. This is everything

that we wanted from our warren.
