This final corner, it feels incredible in the cockpit of a

:01:17.:01:27.
:01:27.:01:34.

Victory here is extra special. To be on the top of the podium at

:01:34.:01:44.
:01:44.:01:56.

Monza, with your own team, you They both go off! Amazing. Just

:01:56.:02:02.

like since the 20s, it is all about speed. If it is one thing we love,

:02:02.:02:12.
:02:12.:02:14.

The Italian Grand Prix this year it is more thrilling than ever.

:02:14.:02:22.

Welcome to Monza. This place is three miles of Tarmac in a suburban

:02:22.:02:27.

pack, but I bet those people are not Italians. To the natives, this

:02:27.:02:31.

place is everything, a shrine to the past in a sport which is always

:02:31.:02:36.

looking to the future. Good afternoon and welcome to a hot and

:02:36.:02:43.

sunny Monza circuit for the qualifying live with myself and

:02:43.:02:48.

Eddie Jordan. What is the first thing that springs to mind? Passion

:02:48.:02:52.

and speed. Nine of the quickest ever races in Formula One have

:02:52.:02:59.

happened here. David Newall about speed in his career. I suppose the

:02:59.:03:03.

first thing that comes into your head when I say Monza is 1997.

:03:03.:03:13.
:03:13.:03:14.

actually when I think of Monza, I think of the Italian fans. They are

:03:14.:03:19.

very special. You have this craziness. Look at them there, a

:03:19.:03:24.

sea of people. Even though clearly I am not driving for Ferrari, there

:03:24.:03:29.

was a lot of excitement about seeing a great Grand Prix. Where is

:03:29.:03:34.

that impressive trophy? McLaren keep the originals and I have a

:03:34.:03:38.

replica. Actually they keep the originals apart from the one which

:03:38.:03:46.

Alain Prost dropped off the podium! Never let a racing driver hold a

:03:46.:03:51.

real trophy because you never know where it will wind up the next day.

:03:51.:03:54.

There is a man talking from experience. Where are your

:03:54.:04:01.

trophies? There are so few. They are upstairs in a loft in my garage.

:04:01.:04:06.

Both of these men have won around here, which I guess was

:04:06.:04:10.

disappointing for the thousands of people in the grandstands. If you

:04:10.:04:15.

look in the podium, there is only one colour they want to see on the

:04:15.:04:25.
:04:25.:04:50.

Suddenly we have arrived where it is very busy indeed. Somewhere

:04:50.:04:55.

behind this crowd is the Ferrari garage. There are hundreds of

:04:55.:04:58.

people and cameras, everyone hoping they can see something special this

:04:58.:05:04.

weekend. In 12 months ago we saw an incredible time for Ferrari but it

:05:04.:05:11.

will be a struggle to repeat that, won't it? So far in the Saturday

:05:11.:05:14.

morning practice, when the teams were focusing on qualifying,

:05:14.:05:21.

Ferrari have not had this Bach. None of these are three sectors

:05:21.:05:29.

have they been able to get close to that in times. Unless they pull out

:05:29.:05:32.

something special there will be some disappointed Italian.

:05:32.:05:34.

some disappointed Italian. imagined a small room somewhere at

:05:34.:05:39.

the Ferrari factory dedicated to this race. It is their most

:05:39.:05:47.

important race. They are used to... In the old days, we used to say,

:05:47.:05:52.

when we were in our three-litre engines, they were always allowed a

:05:52.:05:58.

3.5 litre car. It was called the Ferrari advantage at Monza. The

:05:58.:06:04.

fact is, Ferrari is expected to win here. People have come here in

:06:04.:06:10.

droves to see that and it is always a disappointment if they're not

:06:10.:06:16.

seeing them on the podium. Ferrari are going to do something,

:06:16.:06:23.

it will be difficult in places like Singapore, South Korea, Abu Dhabi?

:06:23.:06:27.

It is changing. Historically we would never even count on Red Bull

:06:27.:06:32.

being strong here, but it has changed. The DRS has added

:06:32.:06:36.

different perspective on racing because now people have more

:06:36.:06:40.

downforce in the knowledge they can use it in the race. The strategy

:06:40.:06:43.

has changed and therefore what we have been expecting to see,

:06:43.:06:49.

traditionally, has somewhat changed. Don't rule out the case that, you

:06:49.:06:55.

know, who expected Ferrari to win at Silverstone? Their emphasis is

:06:55.:06:59.

at Silverstone? Their emphasis is on the race, not the qualifying.

:06:59.:07:05.

talking about people surprising everyone, it was you in 2008 when

:07:05.:07:09.

Sebastian Vettel got his first win. You were driving that day, David,

:07:09.:07:14.

you were in the Red Bull. What did you learn about him that weekend?

:07:14.:07:20.

He was incredible. He was in pole position in the wet, and he showed

:07:20.:07:27.

his class. That has been the best success for Toro Rosso. Look at

:07:27.:07:32.

this, touching wheels with Mark Webber. It showed no sign of

:07:32.:07:38.

something to come in the future. It was a remarkable victory.

:07:38.:07:42.

surprise. You get a shot of the crowd and they are all wearing

:07:42.:07:47.

Ferrari caps. Ferrari are not only the fastest car at the moment, they

:07:48.:07:52.

are up against a man who picked up his first win here and has got used

:07:52.:08:02.
:08:02.:08:06.

pole position, and Mark Webber just didn't get going. Felipe Massa in

:08:06.:08:14.

second place now. Rosberg takes the lead with tremendous straight line

:08:14.:08:20.

speed. Alonso so much faster. Hamilton

:08:20.:08:27.

fancies a look back. He defends well. No DRS at this point in the

:08:27.:08:32.

Grand Prix. Sebastian Vettel with the speed, and takes the lead

:08:32.:08:42.

comfortably. Fernando Alonso powered off the top of the hill.

:08:42.:08:47.

has gone into deep. Alonso now has the racing line into the left-

:08:47.:08:52.

hander. Hamilton surely has a chance to get in there as well. He

:08:52.:08:59.

almost touched the grass to make it work. Alonso very fast again. He

:08:59.:09:06.

has got to go the long way round as they climbed the hill. Alonso comes

:09:06.:09:11.

are just in front of Mark Webber. Mark Webber fancies the run. They

:09:11.:09:20.

are so close. Alonso had to yield, and just as well heeded. They

:09:20.:09:27.

contacted. Hamilton into the barriers. He was clearly not a

:09:27.:09:35.

where he was there. Look how close Button is to Felipe Massa. He

:09:35.:09:41.

drives on the outside. He has got through. Another brave and

:09:41.:09:47.

sensational move from Button. This is Button again. Rosberg is on the

:09:47.:09:55.

outside but he has the rear wing wide open, and job done. Webber and

:09:55.:10:00.

Button catching Alonso very quickly. I don't think Alonso will fight

:10:00.:10:07.

that because he doesn't have the grip. Button right on top of Alonso.

:10:07.:10:11.

He lets him easily around the outside so Button is on to the

:10:11.:10:18.

podium. Our world championship leader, the reigning world champion,

:10:18.:10:23.

takes a victory here at the Belgian Grand Prix. Whatever they throw at

:10:23.:10:28.

him, he can handle it. Back to the top step of the podium,

:10:28.:10:31.

Sebastian Vettel, and the message from Red Bull is loud and clear.

:10:31.:10:37.

They have solved this problem where they have struggled at low

:10:37.:10:43.

downforce circuit. Absolutely, they have tackled their weakest point,

:10:43.:10:48.

which was overall speed in the long straights. They have come here with

:10:48.:10:52.

a nude diffuser and a new wing. In the qualifying session so far they

:10:53.:10:58.

have been very fast. It takes some effort by any team to beat them.

:10:58.:11:02.

You can see how hard they are working away with less than 40

:11:02.:11:06.

minutes to go until qualifying minutes to go until qualifying

:11:06.:11:09.

starts. Rest assured, they will be ready to go. Let's talk about Lewis

:11:09.:11:13.

Hamilton because many people have been questioning this weekend, has

:11:13.:11:18.

he got his brain in June with Formula One or is the letting

:11:18.:11:25.

outside influences affect him? is said to the journalists was a

:11:25.:11:30.

little bit of a swipe at them, they have been giving him a hard time.

:11:30.:11:35.

He has been used to the spotlight, he has been a world champion. I

:11:35.:11:39.

don't think we are seeing anything different. His criticism against

:11:39.:11:47.

the journalists, I believe, was to say "get off my back". He knows how

:11:47.:11:54.

to cope with movie-star as. He has been brilliant. He came out on the

:11:54.:12:01.

Monday after an said an apology. He said he had seen the tape and it

:12:01.:12:05.

was 100% his fault. I was really impressed with him and I think he

:12:05.:12:10.

will be strong here, to prove to everyone he means business.

:12:10.:12:15.

Hamilton is a great guy for bouncing back. I do believe he will

:12:15.:12:20.

bounce back. He has an enormous talent took away. He just needs to

:12:20.:12:25.

tidy it up. He can't keep doing what he did with Kobayashi, he

:12:25.:12:30.

can't keep doing what he did in Canada with Jenson Button. He needs

:12:30.:12:36.

to drive his own race. Just do his normal natural thing, and

:12:36.:12:41.

everything will flood back into place. That accident was bad news

:12:41.:12:45.

for Lewis Hamilton as far as the for Lewis Hamilton as far as the

:12:45.:12:47.

drivers' championship is concerned, and he is now sitting in 5th

:12:47.:12:55.

position. In the constructors Championship, it is of dominant

:12:55.:13:01.

season for Red Bull so far. David is with a man who had a great race

:13:01.:13:11.
:13:11.:13:14.

In Spa, my heart was in my mouth. You haven't seen the movie with

:13:14.:13:17.

Fernando until after the race presumably. Any reflections on

:13:17.:13:22.

that? It was pretty tight at the bottom, you know what it is like

:13:23.:13:27.

when it is pretty steep and quick. I used to be tough KERS and I

:13:27.:13:35.

thought I might as well have a look, I will be on the right on side. It

:13:35.:13:41.

turned out OK in the end and obviously went up the hill and

:13:41.:13:45.

started that map. It was a good passing move and is great to have a

:13:45.:13:52.

battle with Fernando like that every now and again. It was

:13:52.:13:56.

spectacular, it will be played in years to come. What do you say to

:13:56.:14:02.

people who say it was a bit too much, you could have waited? Do you

:14:03.:14:07.

have anything to say to people with those comments? Not really because

:14:07.:14:11.

you can wait, I have done that several times this year, but at

:14:11.:14:15.

that time I thought it was definitely on. It turned out that

:14:15.:14:20.

it was. That was fantastic. What can you get done in Monza this

:14:20.:14:27.

afternoon? Qualifying should be going pretty well, I think. McLaren

:14:27.:14:34.

are going strong. Fernando can do a good job when it counts. There will

:14:34.:14:38.

be five guys that will be pretty tight actually and then the race is

:14:38.:14:43.

another story altogether. We have got different wing levels,

:14:43.:14:50.

different ratios, different DRS. Tactically, how people do it

:14:50.:14:54.

tomorrow will be the main part. Qualifying will be important but

:14:54.:14:57.

the race will be interesting in terms of those factors that changed

:14:57.:15:07.
:15:07.:15:14.

Good luck this afternoon. Always lovely to see them making efforts!

:15:14.:15:19.

These fans I suspect may just be witnessing a bit of history today.

:15:19.:15:24.

Mark Webber is a confident guy. Here is all the latest news from

:15:24.:15:30.

Ted. Lewis Hamilton's win in Germany was

:15:30.:15:34.

the only time he has been on the podium in the last seven races.

:15:34.:15:39.

Following his crash in Belgium he hit back at allegations that he has

:15:40.:15:44.

been distracted by a so-called celebrity lifestyle. I live a

:15:45.:15:50.

normal life. I do not understand why I cannot have a relationship

:15:50.:15:56.

when everyone else can. The cameras are around me but when I go home I

:15:56.:16:01.

live a normal life and do normal things. I do not think they are a

:16:01.:16:06.

distraction at all. And Hamilton is not giving up on the Championship

:16:06.:16:12.

until it is mathematically impossible. I seem to be a magnet

:16:12.:16:17.

for trouble at the moment! I am trying to avoid that and I think

:16:17.:16:22.

again have some really good races. There is the chance to win all

:16:22.:16:29.

seven. So I am still hopeful. Jensen Button will be staying at

:16:29.:16:32.

McLaren next year. The team will be taking up their option on his

:16:32.:16:38.

services. An announcement is expected soon but Button is in the

:16:38.:16:42.

meantime eyeing another podium this weekend. Qualifying is important

:16:42.:16:50.

but it is not the fight in two-term one that it used to be. Red Bull

:16:51.:16:55.

are in the bad books with Pirelli after saying that their tyres where

:16:55.:17:01.

potentially unsafe in the last race. Pirelli have tightened up their

:17:01.:17:05.

camber limits and say they will be more strict with the teams in the

:17:05.:17:11.

future. We got through Belgium, it was a learning curve for all of us

:17:11.:17:18.

including Pirelli. Ferrari are coming to Italy with a new wing

:17:18.:17:24.

that they hope will give them a home win. Fernando Alonso explains

:17:24.:17:29.

the standards that are expected of you if you drive for Ferrari.

:17:29.:17:35.

have to fight for the title. This is what ferry means and what it is

:17:36.:17:42.

raising four. When your second or third as I am in the Championship

:17:42.:17:46.

it seems like a bad season while for the other teams it would be a

:17:46.:17:51.

nice surprise. Next year we will start again with the same

:17:51.:17:55.

determination and responsibility to do well and fight for the world

:17:55.:18:01.

Championship. Bruno Senna has been confirmed as replacement for Nick

:18:01.:18:09.

Heidfeld for the rest of the season. Robert Kubica hopes to be back in a

:18:09.:18:13.

racing car within the next month. And the calendar for next year has

:18:13.:18:18.

been confirmed. There are just eight races in Europe after the

:18:18.:18:24.

Turkish race has been dropped. And so the British Grand Prix is now

:18:24.:18:33.

just 10 months away. Looking at that Callander, the United States

:18:33.:18:37.

and the end of the year and then off to Brazil? It is all very

:18:37.:18:42.

exciting. But for me this season has been the most exciting one that

:18:42.:18:47.

I can recall. It just keeps getting better. So let's try to make sure

:18:47.:18:52.

that this year finishes off in spectacular form. We will focus on

:18:52.:18:57.

this year. And of course the tyres that Pirelli have brought to the

:18:57.:19:02.

races this year have been part of the excitement. A lot of talk there

:19:02.:19:07.

about Red Bull not been happy in the last race with their tyres. Can

:19:07.:19:12.

you just explain what the camber is, why it is there and why the teams

:19:12.:19:19.

like to push the envelope with it? Going back to Belgium, we ran three

:19:19.:19:22.

sessions in the rain so the teams did not really have their normal

:19:22.:19:28.

set up time which was the cause of most of the issues. When you are in

:19:28.:19:33.

a corner, it you get more Footprint, basically the amount of Robert

:19:33.:19:38.

touching the ground as you go around the corner. Some people have

:19:38.:19:44.

cars that can benefit from that and they pushed the limits. They don't

:19:44.:19:48.

just do it on the components of the car but on the tyres as well.

:19:48.:19:56.

have made certain advisory packages but have you actually talked-about

:19:56.:20:01.

toe in it as well? Because for me - is equally as big a problem.

:20:01.:20:06.

are right that that is important. But in this case, of on this

:20:06.:20:12.

circuit it is really the camber that we are concerned about. Can we

:20:12.:20:19.

just explained to go in for the people at home? Taupe in it

:20:19.:20:22.

actually helps to generate and makes them turn up in it easier.

:20:22.:20:31.

You need very good a front-end grip here. You're basically trying to

:20:31.:20:39.

avoid too much of the energy going into the shoulder of the tyres.

:20:39.:20:49.
:20:49.:20:51.

that is the tyre facing in slightly? What would a road car

:20:51.:20:58.

have in terms of camber? For a normal road car, you barely see it.

:20:58.:21:03.

As these cars are going out of the pit lane you can see them leaning

:21:03.:21:13.
:21:13.:21:17.

over in dramatic fashion. This year there has been trying -- there has

:21:17.:21:23.

been trying to break the tyres, to be honest. They can push the limits

:21:23.:21:27.

because the tyres are so robust and so the camber levels have been

:21:27.:21:35.

going up and up. And all the fans will be hoping that one team can

:21:35.:21:39.

look after their tyres and get to the finish before everyone else,

:21:39.:21:44.

and that team is Ferrari. When they come here they are reminded of

:21:44.:21:51.

their glorious past. And speaking of their glorious past, there

:21:51.:22:01.
:22:01.:22:05.

always chasing that world It is amazing when you come to this

:22:05.:22:10.

place. You get the sense of history that Ferrari enjoys. They're not

:22:10.:22:15.

just famous for their cars but also the drivers. And here we have a

:22:15.:22:22.

former world champion and also Fernando Alonso. What is it like

:22:22.:22:26.

when you take a look at the kind of card that Ferrari were rolling a to

:22:26.:22:30.

the factory 40 years ago? It is interesting to see how Formula 1

:22:30.:22:40.

has developed and how we have ended up now, how different they look.

:22:40.:22:46.

But a lot stays the same. Can you believe however how much the sport

:22:46.:22:52.

has moved on? We basically had the technology of the 30s. You had

:22:52.:22:58.

three fuel tanks held together by a bunch of tubes around it which held

:22:58.:23:03.

on the four wheels. But it was the car of the time. So we did not go

:23:03.:23:08.

along saying, oh dear, we have no technology, because we did not know

:23:08.:23:15.

about it. Here is the team of 1964 in its entirety including the chief

:23:15.:23:25.
:23:25.:23:31.

engineer and the team manager. many have you got now? 350, of 400.

:23:31.:23:36.

You fancy jumping in and see whether it a modern driver would

:23:36.:23:45.

fit in a classic car? The first thing that springs to mind is that

:23:45.:23:50.

you guys are now so much better protected. I think safety is one of

:23:50.:24:00.
:24:00.:24:04.

the things that has got better. I have no seat belts! That is just a

:24:04.:24:09.

snapshot of what has happened in 40 years. I think also the style of

:24:09.:24:16.

driving has changed. The driver had the sensation 40 years ago, now

:24:16.:24:21.

everything is done automatically. Automatic manoeuvre is that you

:24:21.:24:28.

learn. John, how would you feel it this was the way you're racing now?

:24:28.:24:34.

Unhappy that it has got this complicated, in many ways? I think

:24:34.:24:40.

Formula 1 should be an example of technology advancement. So I

:24:40.:24:44.

welcome many of these things. I love about this car is that it

:24:45.:24:49.

did not change very much for years. Now you pretty much have a

:24:49.:24:59.

different car every race. When you go to the race track you want to

:24:59.:25:04.

see the big brands racing in each other. Maybe we went a little bit

:25:04.:25:14.
:25:14.:25:17.

too far in terms of technology. It is like you have never been away

:25:17.:25:26.

from it! It is four wheels connected together. And whatever we

:25:26.:25:31.

have come up we have to try to get around the circuit as quickly as we

:25:31.:25:39.

can. These things have won so many world championships. Fans here,

:25:39.:25:44.

they feed off that. You know you have to be the leader here or

:25:45.:25:50.

people will be disappointed. We know that we need to win. This is

:25:50.:26:00.
:26:00.:26:00.

our job. What you see today with Ferrari is absolutely incredible.

:26:00.:26:05.

Something that would have made Mr Ferrari very happy with what he had

:26:05.:26:14.

sown the seeds for. And from two old Ferrari winners to

:26:14.:26:24.
:26:24.:26:26.

another one, John Alesi. Good of you to allow David to win here back

:26:26.:26:32.

in its 1997 when you came second! It was a tough race. I managed to

:26:32.:26:37.

keep him behind the then he took the lead and I tried very hard but

:26:37.:26:43.

I had no chance to take the lead again. You're such a nice guy and

:26:43.:26:51.

has been such a good ambassador for Formula 1. I almost feel guilty!

:26:51.:26:56.

really wanted to win in his lead but he deserved it. A win here is

:26:56.:27:03.

special but a winner for Ferrari is special. What is it like to win for

:27:03.:27:11.

this team? Well I remember it so well all the support from the

:27:11.:27:21.
:27:21.:27:21.

public. It was really magical to drive for Ferrari in Italy. It was

:27:21.:27:26.

a difficult time, at the reliability was not quite there.

:27:26.:27:31.

But the public always help. And you got a lift from Michael Schumacher

:27:31.:27:37.

into the bargain it! That was an extra gift! That was an extra

:27:37.:27:43.

special weekend because another lap, Jordan would have finished in first

:27:43.:27:47.

and second. And John been on the top podium was an emotional day for

:27:47.:27:56.

me. You could not meet a nicer guy. And he made everyone so happy with

:27:56.:28:04.

his win. Tell us what it is like to drive for Ferrari, how great is the

:28:04.:28:09.

pressure to succeed on the driver personally? It is similar to

:28:09.:28:17.

playing for an national team and you have to kick for the World Cup.

:28:17.:28:27.
:28:27.:28:29.

A penalty. It is like that in every lap. Enjoy the weekend. And you can

:28:29.:28:34.

catch up and talk more about the Jordan days. One thing you need

:28:34.:28:39.

around here is a powerful engine. They are on full throttle for 75%

:28:39.:28:49.
:28:49.:29:07.

of the lap. The strong engine has The Ford Cosworth. Born in 1967, it

:29:07.:29:12.

is the most successful engine in Formula 1 history. Winning over 150

:29:12.:29:20.

races, it powered a golden generation. Over the line together,

:29:20.:29:30.
:29:30.:29:30.

almost a dead heat! It was a fantastic engine. Working

:29:30.:29:37.

in any here, it was easy to drive. We still apply many of the

:29:37.:29:41.

engineering principles that were deployed in it racing engines for

:29:41.:29:45.

the first time in that engine. But of course it was a product of its

:29:45.:29:51.

time. Each of these three litre engines have cost Williams 26

:29:51.:30:00.

million. Today, up 200,000. But gone are the engines that are used

:30:00.:30:07.

and then thrown away. The modern engine can do many miles before

:30:07.:30:11.

they have to be thrown out. engines have to be reliable. You

:30:11.:30:16.

have to make sure you get to the finish to win the Championship.

:30:16.:30:20.

Each driver is only allowed eight engines per season. So the first

:30:20.:30:26.

will do the races in Australia and Malaysia were the 7th will do it

:30:26.:30:30.

elite. Engine eight will be used for three races at the end of the

:30:31.:30:40.
:30:41.:30:44.

season. That is because Monza is Gone is the Ferrari V Twelve and

:30:44.:30:54.

the roar of the V turn. Many think that is a shame. That engine was

:30:54.:31:02.

incredible. Ferrari thought each part of the car needed to be

:31:02.:31:10.

involved, and that meant there was a lot of limitation. I would say

:31:10.:31:14.

that our Western culture promotes differences and this is one of the

:31:14.:31:22.

values of our life, so yes, being technical I love differences.

:31:22.:31:28.

engine is the beating heart of the car, what turns the metal into a

:31:28.:31:35.

fire breathing animal. It is not by accident that motor sport is called

:31:35.:31:39.

motor sport. The engine is the heart of the living, breathing

:31:39.:31:45.

racing car. A Formula One car, when you stick a starter or pits romp

:31:45.:31:49.

and make a noise, it is a bit violent event that makes everyone

:31:49.:31:59.
:31:59.:32:03.

sit up and notice. In still makes people take notice. We are

:32:03.:32:07.

regularly blasted out by the noise. How impressed Abbey been by the

:32:07.:32:12.

fact formula One have learned to make engines last? It was not a

:32:12.:32:17.

natural thing for the sport. and the real hard core would still

:32:17.:32:23.

like to hear the v 12 engines, but at the end of the day we have to be

:32:24.:32:28.

mined for about the earth we live in. We have got to be concerned and

:32:28.:32:36.

passionate about conservation, so this is the sensible approach. The

:32:36.:32:40.

longevity of the engine as well, people need to be more reliable in

:32:40.:32:45.

every aspect of life. Nice to see Sir Jackie Stewart at the race as

:32:45.:32:52.

well. David, tell me the story after you said goodbye to Jean

:32:52.:33:01.

Alesi. It is important to control the rpm so they are limited to

:33:01.:33:05.

18,000. What I said about him was that in my first race he was behind

:33:05.:33:10.

me, and he was not happy I would not let him pass. Afterwards he was

:33:10.:33:14.

poking me in the chest saying you are the most incorrect driver I

:33:14.:33:20.

have ever raced against, just because I didn't let him pass!

:33:20.:33:24.

were incorrect for beating him. How dare you? The they are very

:33:24.:33:30.

passionate in Italy. The reason we have walked away from the garage is

:33:30.:33:39.

because the engine is building up, it is the engine of Bruno Senna. He

:33:39.:33:44.

had the best qualifying race of his career in the last race, and he

:33:44.:33:49.

wants to prove that everyone is yet to see the real Bruno Senna, and he

:33:49.:33:59.
:33:59.:34:13.

It's a difficult situation because the type of perception I was

:34:13.:34:18.

getting for my performance was very poor. Sometimes the car didn't

:34:18.:34:22.

allow me to put a performance in, sometimes there was a lack of

:34:22.:34:28.

experience. I was absolutely frightened about that and it came

:34:28.:34:35.

to a point where I started this year with no job. Fortunately

:34:35.:34:45.
:34:45.:34:50.

someone remembered something good, and it was Eric Boullier. In Spa,

:34:50.:34:57.

fortunately for me it is a good circuit. Bruno Senna in 7th, good

:34:57.:35:02.

effort. A great result in qualifying, it was pretty on

:35:02.:35:07.

expected to be that high up in my first qualifying session. Five

:35:07.:35:16.

lights, and then there hairpin awaits. Bruno Senna showing he is a

:35:16.:35:20.

bit rusty. I came to the first corner and I didn't brake hard

:35:20.:35:28.

enough. We are fighting for points, and last year we were taking a

:35:28.:35:32.

different approach. I should have been more careful because I wasn't

:35:32.:35:36.

sure exactly what the car was capable of doing. That was my first

:35:36.:35:40.

crash, and now I have a better reference to build from. The

:35:40.:35:45.

important thing to take from that race was that I did the whole race

:35:45.:35:54.

and the performance was really good, and the team were happy. Monza is

:35:54.:35:59.

one of those tracks where precision is king, and you have to be precise.

:35:59.:36:03.

It is difficult to be precise when the car is moving around because

:36:03.:36:10.

you have less downforce. Every time you go around this track, you think

:36:10.:36:13.

I didn't get it right, I need to get it right in the next lap, then

:36:13.:36:18.

you get something else wrong and it is a never-ending chase for the

:36:18.:36:28.
:36:28.:36:28.

right lap. I didn't do too bad, I had pretty good success. The

:36:28.:36:34.

McLaren and Ferrari fight, it was on the downside. It will be very

:36:34.:36:43.

difficult here because racing is close, it is exciting, but the guys

:36:43.:36:49.

have more racing mileage and an advantage. With less than 15

:36:49.:36:54.

minutes to go until qualifying starts, we have made our way out of

:36:54.:36:58.

the paddock, where you can see Vitaly Petrov going to his car. He

:36:58.:37:03.

has a different team mate, the team dropped Nick Heidfeld and put Bruno

:37:03.:37:08.

Senna in the car. It seems that was an inspired decision? I was

:37:08.:37:12.

critical of the team at the time, and who is to say they were the

:37:12.:37:17.

clever people in the end? Bruno Senna brought a great qualifying

:37:17.:37:22.

lap, but more importantly to the team they brought extra cash. He

:37:22.:37:25.

brought sponsors. The car is already littered with sponsors

:37:25.:37:31.

coming from Brazil, and that is an important aspect. I'm sure for a

:37:31.:37:34.

young driver it is difficult to retain your Focus, especially in a

:37:34.:37:39.

place like this. Lots of stars come and gather here but he has to keep

:37:39.:37:43.

his mind on the job and he has asked the team to be hard on him.

:37:43.:37:51.

What does he mean by that? They would be naturally hard on him if

:37:51.:37:56.

he is not performing anyway. He has one of the most famous uncles and

:37:56.:37:59.

the history of the sport and has been surrounded by celebrities, so

:37:59.:38:05.

in many ways this is a natural environment. Ins bar his qualifying

:38:05.:38:09.

performance made a lot of people sit up and take notice. A big race

:38:09.:38:13.

rusty at the start, we will not hold that against him?

:38:14.:38:19.

Understandable? Yes, it is understandable. I would be raised

:38:19.:38:23.

rusty, even after 15 seasons so let's see how he performs this

:38:23.:38:30.

weekend. We have noticed something that needs a bit of explanation.

:38:30.:38:34.

This man can't keep his hands off the other Formula One drivers. He

:38:34.:38:40.

had a cake fight with Sebastian Vettel, he had a cuddle with Jenson

:38:40.:38:46.

Button. I'm not sure what the commentators were up to there,

:38:46.:38:51.

before he sorted out Michael's shirt. Why can't you keep your

:38:51.:38:57.

hands to yourself? By just love racing drivers, that is why I

:38:57.:39:04.

became one. Mr tactile. You don't touch me, why not? Am I not the

:39:04.:39:09.

right age group? David went round the track with someone I am

:39:09.:39:15.

guessing is in the right age group, Alguersuari. You are from a country

:39:15.:39:23.

where everyone is very affectionate. What I think is quite remarkable is

:39:23.:39:29.

that you were born in 1990. This great historic racetrack here, the

:39:29.:39:32.

original one, it is like prehistoric in comparison to the

:39:32.:39:38.

Grand Prix that you would have watched as a kid. I have never seen

:39:38.:39:44.

racing on the old track here. you been out on it? Yes, I have

:39:44.:39:48.

been on one piece of it when it was the old big banking but I have

:39:48.:39:54.

never seen a race here. This is the start of the old banking. Can you

:39:54.:39:59.

comprehend having raced on it? I can't imagine if you have some

:39:59.:40:04.

oversteer on this banking, how would you feel? It is quite

:40:04.:40:08.

remarkable when you see the drop down to the first chicane, the

:40:08.:40:12.

sense of history you out in Monza, is that important to your

:40:12.:40:17.

generation? It is something cool, because you know it has been

:40:17.:40:21.

something in the past when racing was incredible. It is not like you

:40:21.:40:26.

feel when you go to India where the tracks are new and you don't feel

:40:26.:40:30.

anything so it makes it very cool. We have stopped at the entry here,

:40:30.:40:38.

we have been passed the chicane because it is not as exciting as

:40:38.:40:44.

this corner. What is interesting is how flat the curve is. A you can

:40:44.:40:53.

take much more speed than normal. You almost need to respect what is

:40:53.:40:58.

illegal and what is illegal so you always need to have two wheels on

:40:58.:41:05.

the white line and never put all the wheels out here. More fuel, new

:41:05.:41:11.

tyres, attacking these corners. love it, it is so good. We are

:41:11.:41:16.

coming to the end of the lap now, exiting Parabolica. I used to love

:41:16.:41:26.
:41:26.:41:27.

the run-out here because it is one of the fastest points of the track.

:41:28.:41:37.
:41:38.:41:40.

That is a very traditional song. That is something I wanted to ask

:41:40.:41:50.

you about, DJ as quiet. I am who I am, but I have another life, which

:41:50.:41:56.

is music. I am called a Squire because this is the way I want to

:41:56.:42:02.

show people my sound. I you're there thinking about music when you

:42:02.:42:07.

are driving the car? It is something you have in your mind and

:42:07.:42:12.

it is an emotion. You have adrenaline, you feel you are the

:42:12.:42:15.

boss, you are God, then you take off the helmet and you realise you

:42:15.:42:21.

are not. I do feel I am a super hero when I drive it. I want people

:42:21.:42:25.

to understand my emotion and they can feel what I feel, and music is

:42:25.:42:32.

the way to do it. One thing you are is a Formula One driver, so you are

:42:32.:42:38.

no longer known as a DJ, good luck with the Formula One.

:42:38.:42:44.

disappointing lack of affection at the end. That suddenly turned into

:42:44.:42:49.

an Eric Cantona style interview. Is it important to have Bashir has a

:42:49.:42:53.

weight on the racetrack? It is important for them because the high

:42:53.:42:57.

pressure they are surrounded by here, with the whole world looking

:42:57.:43:03.

at them, they need to get their own time. In my day I used to go off in

:43:03.:43:07.

a rowing boat, I just felt in touch with the different elements, that

:43:07.:43:13.

gave it to me. His is clearly music and I can understand that very well

:43:13.:43:16.

because I am passionate about that anyway. Everyone needs to find

:43:17.:43:22.

their own space. Whatever you do, don't call him DJ Squire because

:43:22.:43:27.

you will be in trouble. How can McLaren go today? It has been a

:43:27.:43:32.

tough weekend so far. Martin, what shape our McLaren in

:43:32.:43:36.

going into qualifying? We don't know. We looked strong yesterday,

:43:36.:43:42.

it was a tough session today. We are definitely competitive. Red

:43:42.:43:46.

Bull and Ferrari look strong, Mercedes look like they are in the

:43:46.:43:49.

hunt as well so that is great for the sport and we will have an

:43:49.:43:54.

exciting qualifying now. We believe we are quick enough to be on the

:43:54.:43:58.

front row and I would very much like us to be on pole position.

:43:58.:44:04.

Jenson Button would like to improve on 13th place, which is what he got

:44:04.:44:09.

in his bath. For these fans, that nothing is Red Bull looked the

:44:09.:44:19.
:44:19.:44:21.

Very noble of Maarten to say such a thing. But deep down he is so

:44:21.:44:26.

passionate about his team. But no more passionate group than those in

:44:26.:44:35.

front of you now. Everything about this place revolves around Ferrari.

:44:35.:44:40.

That is all they care about. It does not matter were the drivers

:44:40.:44:45.

come from. And perhaps they can just find that extra speed to give

:44:45.:44:52.

us an amazing qualifying session around here. 24 cars to start with.

:44:52.:45:02.
:45:02.:45:13.

The 7th slowest drivers are about are searching for the fastest car

:45:13.:45:18.

and driver combination on the fastest of the Grand Prix circuits.

:45:18.:45:23.

80% of the lap is spent at full throttle. Top speeds approaching

:45:23.:45:29.

220 miles an hour. You need a very special car set up for this track.

:45:29.:45:34.

You do indeed. Top speeds around here and traditionally this is

:45:34.:45:39.

where power and low drag would be the winner. But this year of course

:45:39.:45:49.
:45:49.:45:52.

we have the DRS and KERS. Sole less focused on Oldham at top speed and

:45:52.:46:01.

quite a different strategy between the teams. Qualifying is going to

:46:01.:46:06.

be very exciting because if you run your car for maximum qualifying

:46:06.:46:10.

performance you will compromise yourself for the race set-up.

:46:10.:46:20.
:46:20.:46:32.

Because you do not have DRS available. In Belgium was all quite

:46:32.:46:37.

top speeds and long straights and we have exactly the same thing here

:46:37.:46:45.

with quite high temperatures. di Montezemolo there, at the

:46:45.:46:55.
:46:55.:47:04.

Ferrari boss lady at the crowd. They call him a word that basically

:47:04.:47:14.
:47:14.:47:23.

means the fan. The story a Kent this morning is about camber. How

:47:23.:47:27.

much they mean that top of the tyres in. As we sought in Belgium

:47:27.:47:34.

two weeks ago, an important aspect is the limitations of the camber.

:47:34.:47:43.

It is a dynamic setting that means 220 miles an hour, the end of the

:47:43.:47:49.

straight, that is the limitations that they have got. If you're

:47:49.:47:54.

outside the recommendations of the rally you may get penalised for

:47:54.:47:58.

safety reasons. That is something quite remarkable that has been

:47:58.:48:03.

introduced. I think what was played out in Belgium we were not aware of

:48:03.:48:07.

much of it until Sunday morning. But the debate went on long between

:48:07.:48:17.
:48:17.:48:19.

Red Bull and Pirelli and I think basically the FIA to not want to

:48:19.:48:24.

have to deal with that. So have they looked to the tyre

:48:24.:48:27.

manufacturers and they said they can penalise a team if they operate

:48:27.:48:32.

outside the recommended limits. because the tyres could blow up and

:48:32.:48:39.

Pirelli are saying that people will not be blaming the teams, they will

:48:39.:48:45.

blame Pirelli and they do not want them to do that. Jarno Trulli says

:48:45.:48:54.

it does not do much for him, as a southern Italian. This place does

:48:54.:49:00.

not feel especially significant for him but he does enjoy racing here.

:49:00.:49:05.

After Alonso had his first winner for Renault and was asked to give a

:49:05.:49:10.

message to the Spanish people he said, no message, they did not win

:49:10.:49:18.

the Championship. So we are just a minute away from the start of

:49:18.:49:22.

qualifying on the 20 minute session. In the last six consecutive races a

:49:22.:49:27.

driver has been eliminated in qualifying first-round and has gone

:49:27.:49:31.

on to win Championship points the next day. It is not the stigma that

:49:31.:49:39.

it used to be. Well a lot has changed, it was just a sprint to

:49:39.:49:49.

the last pit stop. Now we have KERS proved that the drivers have to

:49:49.:49:54.

play out the strategy and that is why I think what decision they make

:49:54.:49:58.

here for the race will be crucial. The first round of qualifying is

:49:58.:50:08.
:50:08.:50:09.

under way. We have Jarno Trulli on the track, in the Lotus. How do you

:50:09.:50:13.

think the tyre strategy will play out here? We have seen with the

:50:13.:50:19.

softer compound, teams are still having to do several laps to get

:50:19.:50:26.

the best time after them. That has always been the case here in the

:50:26.:50:36.
:50:36.:50:47.

past. You can travel about 20 metres and you could be breaking

:50:47.:50:54.

too early. And it takes the drivers a couple of laps to get their head

:50:54.:51:00.

into 220 mph arrival speeds. You do not do that anywhere else. Farrelly

:51:00.:51:04.

are also saying to the teams that if they do not take the performance

:51:04.:51:10.

out of the tyres in the first two laps, that will hurt them later run.

:51:10.:51:20.

So they could pay the price in the race tomorrow. Exactly. So if you

:51:20.:51:24.

have taken too much out of your tyres for one single that you could

:51:24.:51:29.

be in a difficult situation for the race. So a lot of strategy going

:51:29.:51:33.

into this qualifying session, I suspect more than any other race

:51:33.:51:39.

this season. Ted has some news. Down the back of field in practice

:51:39.:51:44.

this morning Daniel Ricciardo has a real hill to climb up if he is to

:51:44.:51:49.

get any kind of result in possession. He did not take much

:51:49.:51:56.

part in it at all. And Pastor Maldonado also have had a failure

:51:56.:52:06.
:52:06.:52:12.

at the end of practice with the KERS. Band Nico Rosberg still has

:52:12.:52:18.

some set up work to do. We heard some comments about Jensen

:52:18.:52:22.

Button on the radio this morning saying he does not quite have the

:52:22.:52:27.

balance and the grip. But when he is happy with his car he's

:52:27.:52:33.

unbeatable. But unless he has found a magic cure, as they go under the

:52:33.:52:43.
:52:43.:52:49.

old bank... We will talk more about that tomorrow. So we now have 15

:52:49.:52:53.

cars on the race track. If they need to do more laps to get their

:52:53.:53:03.
:53:03.:53:06.

best lap in we're going to a year a lot about blocking, I suspect.

:53:06.:53:12.

will be carrying a bit of extra fuel which will cost them around a

:53:12.:53:20.

10th of a lap to carry that. But having the ability to do an extra

:53:20.:53:30.

couple of laps is going to be beneficial. Heikki Kovalainen the

:53:30.:53:37.

man we are looking at now. Those new speed bumps Rayleigh are

challenging the drivers. -- really are. The drivers actually had them

:53:50.:53:54.

changed with the Configuration at the chicane because they felt there

:53:54.:53:59.

was the potential to damage the car. So many drivers were going straight

:53:59.:54:05.

on at the first and second chicane and then just straight back on to

:54:05.:54:09.

the race track, now 80 really is a challenge to navigate your way

:54:09.:54:14.

through those speed bumps without damaging your car. I said this

:54:14.:54:22.

morning to Michael Schumacher of a breakfast, he said it really is a

:54:22.:54:32.
:54:32.:54:37.

problem. He said actually it might damage the car. Rubens Barrichello,

:54:37.:54:44.

he won this Grand Prix two years ago. And he is under way in the

:54:44.:54:49.

Williams on a hot lap. He has struggled a little bit as has

:54:49.:54:57.

Pastor Maldonado. Not particularly fast here. If you think of the top

:54:57.:55:07.

four teams, the next best looks like Force India. And some were

:55:07.:55:17.

:55:18.:55:24.

manage to get a clean black peer. So much momentum necessary for

struggling this weekend's through Acorah has been its slippery this

:57:04.:57:09.

weekend after we hear more from Ted Dannatt Red Bull. Red Bull are

:57:09.:57:14.

taking things very easily. There's nothing wrong with the car. Mark

:57:14.:57:20.

Webber just getting into it now. He is the only one of the top guys not

:57:20.:57:25.

to have taken a fresh engine this weekend. Sebastian Vettel has and

:57:25.:57:35.
:57:35.:57:42.

he is out there now. And here is the Parabolica corner. It has been

:57:42.:57:50.

resurfaced. But the oil that goes into that will be ripping out.

:57:50.:58:00.
:58:00.:58:00.

Making it slippery. That is the darker tarmac that you can see

:58:00.:58:07.

there. Michael Schumacher's said this morning that there is plenty

:58:07.:58:13.

of grip on the racing line. But to go off that if it rains, it will be

:58:14.:58:23.
:58:24.:58:36.

terrifying. Bruno Senna in his second race for the Lotus team. And

:58:36.:58:44.

we have got a yellow flag. What is going on their? Lots of smoke.

:58:44.:58:54.
:58:54.:58:56.

Pastor Maldonado has been gyrating on the exit of the Parabolica. Not

:58:56.:59:06.
:59:06.:59:09.

to be recommended. It is not a corner in the past... It just feels

:59:10.:59:17.

like a huge amount of load being put on you're axle. Pastor

:59:17.:59:24.

Maldonado has not done a lap time. Do they have time to fix that car?

:59:24.:59:32.

Did the rear wing hit the barrier? Of course that is easy to change in

:59:32.:59:42.
:59:42.:00:05.

the pit. But Pastor Maldonado could action, but now back to the track

:00:05.:00:09.

as we watch Lewis Hamilton go through this chicane, where you are

:00:09.:00:14.

allowed to run wide through the exit. That confuses me because in

:00:14.:00:20.

other places you get penalised. Why do you think it is acceptable to

:00:20.:00:30.
:00:30.:00:33.

run all four wheels off the road in one place? I think it is decided to

:00:33.:00:41.

put any high kerbs, with the speed of the car, it could launch the car.

:00:41.:00:46.

It was felt the lesser of two evils was to allow the driver to run wide

:00:46.:00:50.

and everyone is doing it sono big advantage gained for one individual.

:00:50.:00:56.

The fastest time we have seen this morning was from Sebastian Vettel

:00:56.:01:06.
:01:06.:01:12.

this morning. Lewis Hamilton the first man into the 1: 23s, just.

:01:12.:01:20.

Are you surprised that he is surprised? I am surprised, Surrey.

:01:20.:01:25.

I am surprised he was surprised he has been a balanced shift but maybe

:01:25.:01:30.

he is just re-enacting what happened. They built these Williams

:01:30.:01:33.

suspensions strong. They have not had to change anything major on the

:01:33.:01:41.

car, they just put a new front wing on. Maldonado would have been

:01:41.:01:47.

practising whereabouts he can use that weighing in practice. Indeed,

:01:47.:01:53.

he did. Schumacher has gone up into 6th place and the Mercedes are so

:01:53.:01:57.

fast in the first sector. They have been flying through practise as

:01:57.:02:07.

Philip -- Felipe Massa goes into 5th place. The Renault cars have

:02:07.:02:13.

gone with the strategy of having a very low wing. You can see Mark

:02:13.:02:18.

Webber is getting his eye in here, still on the hard tyres of course,

:02:18.:02:24.

so no big pressure at this stage. It will be interesting to see if

:02:24.:02:30.

Maldonado does go out. At the moment in the drop zone, as you can

:02:30.:02:40.
:02:40.:02:46.

see on your television screen. Rosberg posted the fastest first

:02:46.:02:52.

sector again, and you were telling us why Mercedes is so quick. That

:02:52.:02:58.

first sector is all about straight line. It is great to power down and

:02:58.:03:02.

accelerate, and it may be they have gone with the strategy to optimise

:03:02.:03:08.

engine power, that means running longer ratios for qualifying, and

:03:08.:03:14.

some of the other cars may be concentrating on the race where you

:03:14.:03:18.

can't use DRS everywhere. You can't use it here first example, running

:03:18.:03:24.

up to Parabolica. You will be out of the peak power on the engine so

:03:24.:03:28.

this is why strategy in qualifying, and what we will see tomorrow, is

:03:28.:03:36.

going to be very interesting. Indeed. Nico Rosberg heads for the

:03:36.:03:46.

line, and goes into 6th place. His top speed is about 322 kilometres

:03:46.:03:50.

per hour. That is at the finish line, incredibly. Six minutes

:03:50.:04:00.
:04:00.:04:10.

take to the track, and there is Timo Glock for the Virgin team. At

:04:10.:04:17.

the moment a couple of tenths ahead of his team-mate. He is looking for

:04:17.:04:21.

the extra grip because those at the back of the field know that this is

:04:21.:04:26.

about grid position for them. If they don't clear the bar into Q2,

:04:26.:04:30.

this is where they will start the race tomorrow so this is important

:04:31.:04:39.

to get the soft tyres on, the DRS wide-open to give them another 10

:04:39.:04:45.

mph. Slightly scary, they have taken the tree out of the run-off

:04:46.:04:53.

area. The new tarmac is all weighed down to the Parabolica corner. So

:04:53.:04:58.

much a straight line here, which is why you put those skinny tea-tray

:04:58.:05:05.

wings on the back. At the moment it is Bruno Senna or in 17th, and the

:05:05.:05:11.

final man in. He will have to go on to a set of soft tyres. He is out

:05:11.:05:18.

on the track now. Someone has just pitied, cars on the racetrack. Will

:05:18.:05:28.
:05:28.:05:40.

the front runners feel the need to go out in the one -- the 1: 24s.

:05:40.:05:43.

They are all out on a set of soft tyres, trying to get themselves

:05:43.:05:48.

comfortably through to the next phase of qualifying. Louis Hamilton

:05:48.:05:53.

remains the fastest. Both Force Indias coming down the back

:05:53.:06:03.
:06:03.:06:05.

straight. This is Sergio Perez coming into Parabolica. At the

:06:05.:06:10.

moment he is 16th, and he really needs to pop a lap time in. He does

:06:10.:06:20.

so, and he is up into 10th place on the softer compound tyre. Buemi

:06:20.:06:30.
:06:30.:06:31.

goes through, too, but he is in 15th place. Here is Kovalainen. Two

:06:31.:06:39.

personal best going on for him so far in this lap. A lot of fun

:06:39.:06:45.

dustier on the last corner there, he had to wait an eternity. It is

:06:45.:06:52.

so important on this straight before start Kovalainen remains in

:06:52.:07:02.
:07:02.:07:12.

done now, no second chances for him after that error. There is plenty

:07:12.:07:19.

going on at the back of the field. Bruno Senna has dropped down to

:07:19.:07:29.
:07:29.:07:32.

18th, Kobayashi is in 17th. Michael Schumacher is in the pits, but

:07:32.:07:36.

drops down to 11th as well because Paul di Resta and Adrian Sutil are

:07:36.:07:42.

ahead of him. That is Kobayashi going over the line, and only doing

:07:42.:07:52.
:07:52.:07:57.

a one minute 27.4. -- 1: 27.4. Two minutes remaining so they can get

:07:57.:08:01.

another two laps in. They have got time in hand, but do they have the

:08:01.:08:07.

fuel, the tyres and the fundamental speed in the car? Rubens

:08:07.:08:17.
:08:17.:08:21.

Barrichello is up into 13th place at the moment. Trulli in 19th. A

:08:21.:08:25.

set of soft tyres on that Sauber and they are really fighting hard

:08:26.:08:32.

for it. They looked so good yesterday. Kobayashi once again

:08:32.:08:39.

under a lot of pressure in the very first phase of qualifying. Up

:08:39.:08:47.

shifting through the exit, how was it going on this lap? Not a

:08:47.:08:54.

particularly good first sector. We have got 15 cars remaining on the

:08:54.:08:58.

track. As expected, all the front runners stayed in the pits, they

:08:58.:09:06.

thought they had done enough. Kobayashi goes up into 16th, Buemi

:09:06.:09:13.

down into 17th. Bruno Senna et in 10th place so that comfortably get

:09:13.:09:20.

him ahead of Adrian Sutil. So now Kobayashi is the last man in at the

:09:20.:09:25.

moment. Maldonado has fallen back down to 16th place, but on a better

:09:25.:09:34.

lap. Trulli has gone into 19th place and Buemi is out at the

:09:34.:09:40.

moment. They are absolutely driving every metre of this racetrack.

:09:40.:09:46.

Driving it to the maximum because every hundred the the second counts

:09:46.:09:56.
:09:56.:10:02.

now. -- hundredth. They are all doing best medal sectors, Maldonado

:10:02.:10:07.

as well. Alguersuari has got himself in 14th place at the moment

:10:07.:10:17.
:10:17.:10:20.

and the flak has -- the flag has gone out. We watch them coming

:10:20.:10:29.

through to the end of the lap. Kobayashi copied to 11th place,

:10:29.:10:36.

Adrian Sutil has gone faster as well. Rubens Barrichello is still

:10:36.:10:40.

out on track, under pressure. Alguersuari has not got a good lap

:10:40.:10:50.
:10:50.:10:51.

going on. The tail Enders are fixing their grades. What we want

:10:51.:10:55.

to know is Barrichello, as he comes over the line, he has not appeared

:10:55.:11:05.
:11:05.:11:05.

in vision yet. It remains Trulli, Kovalainen. Alguersuari then, your

:11:05.:11:10.

track guide specialist. He says he feels like a god when he is driving

:11:10.:11:15.

this car, he will not feel that when he steps out this time.

:11:15.:11:21.

will be very disappointed with that. His final lap there, he aborted, so

:11:21.:11:25.

he tails off what could have been. He knew they were vulnerable in

:11:26.:11:34.

this part of qualifying, but as you said, how many cars who have been

:11:34.:11:42.

the first of four have ended up in the points in Grand Prix? -- the

:11:42.:11:52.
:11:52.:12:05.

of Liuzzi. Timo Glock, just checking out the DRS activation on

:12:05.:12:11.

his wing. We saw him this morning spinning off on one of the chicanes

:12:11.:12:16.

because it stayed open when it should not have. There is a

:12:16.:12:21.

regulation, that it should do automatically. We saw him go

:12:21.:12:30.

straight down the escape route on me sleeping policemen. That is a

:12:30.:12:36.

topic for them. We know who is not hot this afternoon, those who are

:12:36.:12:41.

out, but at the front it was Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel and

:12:41.:12:46.

Jenson Button. The usual suspects that the front, very much the usual

:12:46.:12:54.

suspects at the back of the grid as well. Having the usual suspect at

:12:54.:12:57.

the back is really starting to grate on Eddie Jordan. You were

:12:57.:13:04.

chewing my year off about the teams needing to improve and do better.

:13:04.:13:09.

We are getting used to it. What is the one thing we always put down as

:13:09.:13:13.

a certainty - the three new teams anchored to the rear of the grid

:13:13.:13:18.

and that is unacceptable for me. I can't see where any of these three

:13:18.:13:21.

teams, they are not showing a demonstration to anyone they will

:13:21.:13:27.

get out of the situation they are currently in. Is it a sign of the

:13:27.:13:31.

times that it is so expensive. don't want to continually blame

:13:31.:13:35.

money because that is the easiest argument in the book. They have

:13:35.:13:38.

talented drivers, talented people but they are not putting it

:13:38.:13:43.

together. I want to see a spurt from at least one of these teams

:13:43.:13:47.

because collectively they are not demonstrating to me any sign that

:13:47.:13:51.

they have either the will power, they have either the will power,

:13:51.:13:54.

the mentality, the mind, the finances to move up the grid.

:13:54.:13:59.

Another team making heavy work of this season with an incredible

:13:59.:14:06.

pedigree are the Williams team. Alguersuari was the victim of this

:14:06.:14:12.

crash, and we think Maldonado was too early on the BRS. It is too

:14:12.:14:17.

early to say but how lucky was he able to get back out and in

:14:17.:14:21.

contention, so we all have a deep down passion for Williams because

:14:21.:14:27.

we know what Frank can do, Patrick Head Sam Michael, for as long as he

:14:27.:14:31.

will be there. They have a history of pedigree, they are a team of

:14:31.:14:35.

champions, everybody loves Williams but we don't like where they are at

:14:36.:14:40.

the moment. I am sure they can bounce back. Impressive for

:14:40.:14:44.

Maldonado to go back out and finished 11th. Alguersuari was the

:14:44.:14:54.

victim in that session, I suppose he will take -- take heart that he

:14:54.:14:58.

can pick up points. Yes but right now he is distraught. He doesn't

:14:58.:15:04.

understand. He wishes he didn't give David Coulthard a big hug

:15:04.:15:11.

because this is the kiss of death! His head is in his hands. He is

:15:11.:15:14.

wondering what have I got done here because this is a great chance to

:15:14.:15:19.

make a real big race of it and he has failed. One man not far behind

:15:19.:15:29.
:15:29.:15:30.

A man who was not far behind him was Jarno Trulli. And here he is

:15:30.:15:38.

now. You must be happy with that lap, it was a strong lap for you.

:15:38.:15:43.

think the last lap would have been even better but I do not mind. We

:15:43.:15:50.

make some changes from yesterday. And it was a good improvement. I'm

:15:50.:15:55.

happy now because I have new power steering and I can get the best out

:15:55.:16:03.

of it. In 2004 I was so proud, you're on pole position, you won

:16:03.:16:08.

the race at Monaco. I thought you were world champion in the making.

:16:08.:16:14.

Then you came a couple of years ago with a fresh new start. You must be

:16:14.:16:17.

disappointed that these new teams cannot move forward. I think we

:16:17.:16:23.

have to take into account that this is a brand new team and the set up

:16:23.:16:29.

takes some time. Unlock the first one trying to grab the top of the

:16:29.:16:36.

field and then eventually dropped down because something goes wrong.

:16:36.:16:43.

We all know what happened to my former team. But I'm still enjoying

:16:43.:16:46.

driving and enjoying the challenge with my team-mate and with everyone

:16:47.:16:52.

else around me. So Jarno Trulli falls out in the first part of

:16:52.:16:57.

qualifying. What will happen in the second round of qualifying? Time to

:16:57.:17:03.

find out. We are now into the second part of

:17:03.:17:10.

qualifying. 15 minutes to find out who can make it through to the top

:17:10.:17:20.
:17:20.:17:21.

10 shoot out. I think everyone was safely going through in the first

:17:21.:17:31.

part on the softer tyres. I'm looking forward to getting a bit

:17:31.:17:36.

more into the different strategies that the teams are running. I

:17:36.:17:41.

suspect some of the top teams may feel vulnerable and want to run an

:17:41.:17:50.

option to get them through into the top 10. Being at the sharp end of

:17:50.:17:54.

the great, and Red Bull have never been on the front row here, there

:17:55.:17:59.

has been more winners from the front of the grid here than Monaco,

:17:59.:18:06.

for example. Grid position here means Europcar is beautifully set

:18:06.:18:11.

up and you cannot drive around problems if you set up is not

:18:11.:18:17.

working. Yes it is about the driver building up momentum and speed and

:18:17.:18:22.

confidence, more like old stop racing. We knew right after

:18:22.:18:26.

breaking his own at that speed, the scenery is passing extremely

:18:26.:18:32.

quickly. If you're not confident, if you blink, you miss your

:18:32.:18:36.

breaking point. Qualifying is one way of getting yourself into the

:18:36.:18:46.
:18:46.:18:50.

zone. Because it will be a very different story tomorrow. Let's

:18:50.:18:57.

hear what Ted Kravitz has got to say. You asked about Timo Glock. He

:18:57.:19:01.

said that the real wing opened but then it would not shut when he

:19:01.:19:11.
:19:11.:19:16.

wanted it to. What struck me about the front runners, in the end of

:19:16.:19:21.

that first qualifying session, it was how slow Sebastian Vettel was

:19:21.:19:25.

in the first sector but then the quickest in second and the third.

:19:25.:19:30.

The engineers suspect he might be running a shorter career ratio than

:19:30.:19:35.

Mark Webber. And that is helping him in the slower corners. He is

:19:35.:19:41.

getting out of corners quicker but then he is not as fast as Mark

:19:41.:19:46.

Webber on the straights. How much to think that will affect him in

:19:46.:19:56.
:19:56.:19:58.

the final reckoning? Well as of last night you have to choose your

:19:58.:20:03.

gear ratio. And never has it been more difficult a would imagine than

:20:03.:20:13.
:20:13.:20:18.

here. That is such a difficult choice. In qualifying you can open

:20:18.:20:22.

the di Resta at will and make full advantage of that reduction and

:20:22.:20:32.
:20:32.:20:43.

But without it it is like towing a caravan. So it may be that

:20:43.:20:53.
:20:53.:20:55.

Sebastian Vettel has got himself fixated with the set up. It is all

:20:55.:21:05.
:21:05.:21:09.

about delivering the lap when it counts. Bruno Senna at the first to

:21:09.:21:14.

deliver her really high flying lap in the second round of qualifying.

:21:14.:21:20.

They have millions of pounds worth of simulators. I wonder why they

:21:20.:21:26.

have different solutions for the gear ratio. When you have

:21:26.:21:31.

simulation but it is all about reality. Next weekend in the same

:21:31.:21:40.

place you would get to French results. It changes day-to-day. --

:21:40.:21:45.

you would get different results. It you would get different results. It

:21:45.:21:54.

is all about the fine-tuning on the day. So it is jam today in

:21:54.:22:01.

qualifying for a jam tomorrow in the race. That would be the choice!

:22:01.:22:05.

I would go for race strategy because that is where you get the

:22:05.:22:15.
:22:15.:22:22.

points. Nico Rosberg were very much like to win his first Grand Prix.

:22:22.:22:32.

He is straight out on the soft tyres. This is the section where

:22:32.:22:42.
:22:42.:22:45.

you can run wide and not be penalised. The speed you carry into

:22:45.:22:51.

that corner really comes and smacks you in the face. The apex is very

:22:51.:23:01.
:23:01.:23:09.

early in the corner. You can hear the exhaust blowing through those

:23:09.:23:19.
:23:19.:23:24.

corners. Sebastian Vettel then, at 22.914. That sense -- sets the

:23:24.:23:33.

benchmark on the soft tyres. The boss of Red Bull in the picture

:23:33.:23:43.
:23:43.:23:52.

there. Red Bull just looked immense yesterday. But it is going to be

:23:52.:23:56.

much closer in the qualification. All the indications are that Red

:23:56.:24:02.

Bull have discovered some though downforce form. Historically they

:24:02.:24:12.
:24:12.:24:51.

new tarmac. Schumacher and crosses the line that goes on the into 9th

:24:51.:25:01.
:25:01.:25:03.

place with that. Jensen Button has now gone second on 23.0. The Times

:25:03.:25:13.
:25:13.:25:15.

not as fast as last year. Fernando Alonso, the one who won his Grand

:25:15.:25:23.

Prix last year. Let's see how much care if he needs on the inside.

:25:23.:25:33.
:25:33.:25:49.

Pretty much all of it. No personal bests at the moment. Alonso moves

:25:49.:25:57.

up from 5th to 4th place. He looks tentative. He was not using all of

:25:57.:26:03.

that circuit. Those little movements on the steering wheel, it

:26:03.:26:10.

is as if there is some uncertainty as to what the car can deliver.

:26:10.:26:20.
:26:20.:26:25.

Hamilton did that time, he tried this out in Hungary. So he saved a

:26:25.:26:35.
:26:35.:26:41.

set of soft tyres there. He is showing conference go into

:26:41.:26:51.
:26:51.:26:53.

qualifying, third round. I suspect he will have to be building on the

:26:53.:27:03.
:27:03.:27:07.

softer compound. But let's see what else is going on on the race track.

:27:07.:27:17.
:27:17.:27:43.

moment. He is just heading into the Parabolica. Mercedes have looked

:27:43.:27:48.

pretty handy around here. We're getting all those times in the

:27:48.:27:58.
:27:58.:28:12.

first sector. Looking down at the drop zone, has anyone behind Bruno

:28:12.:28:17.

Senna got what it takes to challenge for the top 10? Is it

:28:17.:28:26.

worth taking the risk, why take the risk for the tyres and their

:28:26.:28:36.
:28:36.:28:43.

degradation at this stage? It does not make sense to me. Hamilton

:28:43.:28:53.
:28:53.:28:55.

eighth place at the moment as he takes to the track. Paul di Resta

:28:55.:29:03.

goes 10th place then. He needs a better time than that if he is

:29:03.:29:10.

going to join in the top-ten shoot- out. Pastor Maldonado somehow still

:29:10.:29:15.

in the action after that heavy brush with the barriers in that

:29:15.:29:25.
:29:25.:29:28.

first part of qualifying. Maldonado on the soft tyres. Kobayashi down

:29:28.:29:35.

now in his 17th. Two-and-a-half minutes remaining. Hamilton is alt.

:29:35.:29:45.
:29:45.:29:52.

He needs to do a better time than that. Even on his out lack he has

:29:52.:30:02.
:30:02.:30:08.

the car is doing, want to get the DRS Open. Proportionally, you're

:30:08.:30:13.

not getting the 20 kilometres an hour difference we are seeing on

:30:13.:30:23.
:30:23.:30:25.

some of the tracks. Sergio Perez down in 16th place for Sauber. They

:30:25.:30:30.

came here not expecting much at Sauber, then they had a good Friday.

:30:30.:30:34.

They were acquired pumped-up last night, but not at the moment.

:30:34.:30:40.

track does change so they were looking good, but not looking quite

:30:40.:30:49.

so good at the moment. A Adrian Sutil in 12th place. Di Resta is on

:30:49.:30:59.
:30:59.:31:02.

another hot lap now, he looks like he just hit another car lap. -- did

:31:02.:31:12.

another calm lap. Hamilton is in 8th place, but we know he is now on

:31:12.:31:18.

the softer tyres. Here comes Lewis Hamilton, he goes bird with that

:31:18.:31:26.

time. So Hamilton has still not beating the Red Bulls surprisingly.

:31:26.:31:35.

Kobayashi stays in 17th place. The chequered flag has not gone out yet

:31:35.:31:41.

so they still have time. Bruno Senna is in 12th place, and stays

:31:41.:31:47.

there. Eight seconds to the end, let's see if Paul di Resta can get

:31:47.:31:53.

it across the line. He has already out qualified Adrian Sutil anyway.

:31:53.:31:57.

If he stays 10th place, does not improve on his lap time, but now he

:31:57.:32:06.

has got a lookout for Perez and Maldonado. Bruno Senna could be his

:32:06.:32:11.

biggest threat. Here comes Maldonado, another personal best in

:32:11.:32:21.
:32:21.:32:28.

the middle sector. But his 13th place a Maldonado only. -- up to

:32:28.:32:37.

13th place for Maldonado only. There is the Bruno Senna. Where is

:32:37.:32:44.

Petrov, his team-mate? He is inside the top 10. That is the man we need

:32:44.:32:54.
:32:54.:32:56.

to watch at the moment. Kobayashi can't go any faster, stays in 17th.

:32:56.:33:00.

It is Bruno Senna now, as he crosses the line and goes 10th

:33:00.:33:08.

place, just pushes Paul di Resta out by two hundredths of the second.

:33:08.:33:14.

He will come into the pits to be told I'm sorry, you are just a side.

:33:14.:33:19.

There he is, he is about to get the message that he will take no

:33:19.:33:24.

further part in qualifying. You can start the race on any tyres you

:33:24.:33:31.

like, but he has missed the cut. The only salvation for him was that

:33:31.:33:41.
:33:41.:33:45.

he once again about qualifies Adrian Sutil. -- out qualifies.

:33:45.:33:51.

Engineer would have told him it is this La or not at all and he has

:33:51.:33:55.

delivered. He is not quite as quick as his team-mate but none the less

:33:55.:34:05.
:34:05.:34:21.

disappointed with 15th place. Kobayashi will start 17th. And Paul

:34:21.:34:31.
:34:31.:34:32.

di Resta, 6 thousandths of the second. RADIO: That is no doubt

:34:32.:34:42.
:34:42.:34:47.

down to Bruno Senna having a tow by Hamilton. That is how could the BBC

:34:47.:34:57.
:34:57.:34:58.

is, you almost got that information before the racing driver! He beat

:34:58.:35:02.

his team-mate, that is the priority for him at this stage, but actually

:35:03.:35:08.

now he can pick whatever tyres he likes. The strategy is in his

:35:08.:35:13.

favour. I would prefer to be in 11th place, rather than a 10th or

:35:13.:35:16.

9th, because it makes so much difference having that choice

:35:16.:35:21.

before the race. He will make it through to the final part of

:35:21.:35:26.

qualifying and we will talk about that in a moment because there was

:35:26.:35:33.

just four tenths between the top six guys in that session. There is

:35:33.:35:39.

plenty of talk about DRS and high- speed, and we think Timo Glock was

:35:39.:35:42.

concerned his wing was sticking open and that would be a big

:35:42.:35:49.

concern, Eddie? Of course it would be and I think that is the case.

:35:49.:35:53.

You think you have downforce but you haven't so you are putting a

:35:53.:35:57.

car into a situation where you think you have it, so the car

:35:57.:36:02.

becomes virtually undrivable. Timo Glock had a shocker of a qualifying

:36:02.:36:09.

session through no fault of his own. Here he is, having a look at the

:36:09.:36:14.

wing himself. Let's have a word with him.

:36:14.:36:17.

21st start place tomorrow but what did you work out about your rear

:36:17.:36:22.

wing because it looked like a scary moment you had this morning. Yes, I

:36:22.:36:27.

had a problem this morning with the rear wing. It lapped up but didn't

:36:27.:36:33.

come down any more. For some reason we have never had this problem, we

:36:33.:36:38.

never had it on Friday and it is not really comfortable if you brake

:36:38.:36:44.

into turn one with a broken rear wing. It was very difficult and

:36:44.:36:49.

disappointing because we were close to Kovalainen, and I think with the

:36:49.:36:53.

rear wing working with the DRS function, we could have been close

:36:53.:36:58.

to them. At least I was in front of my team-mate, which was a surprise

:36:58.:37:02.

for may because the car was difficult to drive in these

:37:02.:37:07.

circumstances. Consider in the circumstances, that was a great lap.

:37:07.:37:17.
:37:17.:37:18.

And this man, Daniel Ricky Adair will be with him, and you have also

:37:18.:37:28.
:37:28.:37:30.

out qualified your team-mate. you. I will try to do it more

:37:30.:37:37.

consistently now but it is good. What I am concerned with is where

:37:37.:37:45.

do you find that? How do you find such a big gap as one second?

:37:45.:37:52.

Spa, that was probably more down to me not doing a good qualifying

:37:52.:37:56.

performance. I was still slow were in those circumstances but it was

:37:56.:38:03.

probably not maybe the second 1/2 as it seemed. We didn't have the

:38:03.:38:07.

smoothest run up into qualifying either. Also this morning we didn't

:38:07.:38:12.

get to do a qualifying simulation so I just sort of went for it and

:38:12.:38:17.

managed to put it all together. Sometimes it just happens, I don't

:38:17.:38:22.

know. I will try to make it happen more often. Enjoy the moment.

:38:23.:38:28.

Indeed, congratulations. Daniel made it out in the first part of

:38:28.:38:32.

qualifying, but let's turn our attention to the chase for pole

:38:32.:38:37.

position. So tight at the front, who do you think can do it today?

:38:37.:38:42.

have this great feeling about Lewis will start when he has all the

:38:42.:38:48.

controversy and people on his back, he always seems to pull it out of

:38:48.:38:52.

the bag and prove people wrong, me included. I just think he can pull

:38:52.:38:55.

included. I just think he can pull it out here. So Lewis Hamilton in

:38:55.:39:00.

the face of adversity or Sebastian Vettel to do what he does. What do

:39:00.:39:07.

we think in the commentary box? Sebastian Vettel takes this, he

:39:07.:39:11.

will be the first man to take 10 pole positions in two different

:39:11.:39:16.

Formula One seasons since Ayrton Senna. That is how fast the young

:39:16.:39:24.

German is, but what do you think, David? Has he got pole position in

:39:24.:39:34.
:39:34.:39:38.

the back? In his mind's eye I that is what you see now. This is down

:39:38.:39:43.

to the strategy I was talking about earlier, who is using the right

:39:43.:39:52.

strategy for qualifying? We will strategy for qualifying? We will

:39:52.:39:55.

have 10 minutes of qualifying three. Qualifying three starts right now.

:39:55.:40:00.

As you can see, a long queue at the end of the pit lane. They are keen

:40:00.:40:04.

to get out there, they love this track. They don't have the trouble

:40:04.:40:08.

of the issue with traffic, there will only be 10 cars out there.

:40:09.:40:14.

They have just under 10 minutes to do it. You can see one of the

:40:14.:40:18.

Ferraris coming out, they have obviously been told to get out

:40:18.:40:25.

there and give the Italian fans the show. Is visiting strategy to help

:40:25.:40:35.

tow each other around? Indianapolis has one of the longest flat out

:40:35.:40:39.

sections of any circuit, and we would go out and finish the lab and

:40:39.:40:43.

give the slipstream at the next of the lap to your team mate. We heard

:40:43.:40:48.

them saying that Lewis Hamilton ended up giving Bruno Senna or a

:40:48.:40:54.

tow into the top 10 shoot-out, obviously not intentionally. We can

:40:54.:41:00.

see the Ferrari hierarchy looking on. It is odd to send your cars out

:41:00.:41:06.

like that because, if one spins out, it affects both of them. How hard

:41:06.:41:09.

was it to co-ordinate because I found it virtually impossible over

:41:09.:41:14.

the years. It is so difficult to get it right. It is all about the

:41:14.:41:20.

car in front. If he doesn't want to play ball, it will not work, but

:41:20.:41:24.

let's see what will happen. If they co-ordinate this correctly, it

:41:24.:41:31.

would give a big advantage to Fernando Alonso. Even with the DRS,

:41:31.:41:36.

with the KERS, if you are running in the air of the car in front, it

:41:36.:41:42.

gives you less resistance. I can't understand why Felipe Massa would

:41:42.:41:50.

give a jot about giving his team mate the toe. Sadly we can't see it

:41:50.:41:55.

but they have just passed me in the straight and Felipe Massa is

:41:55.:42:05.
:42:05.:42:08.

turbulent there's a phone to me. went into Ferrari and asked because

:42:08.:42:13.

they did practise that so thing in third practice and it worked for

:42:13.:42:17.

them then so we will see if they do it at the end of the lab. Fernando

:42:17.:42:22.

said we are not expecting anything more than a 5th, for no other

:42:22.:42:32.
:42:32.:42:35.

reason than what has affected us all season - not enough downforce.

:42:35.:42:40.

Felipe Massa is giving it full beam through these corners so he looks

:42:40.:42:45.

like he is searching for a lap time instantly. Of course, but that is

:42:45.:42:52.

close enough to make a difference. Fernando Alonso has the benefit of

:42:53.:42:58.

a distant Tote and all of the Straits as well as his DRS. I will

:42:58.:43:06.

be amazed if he is not quicker than Felipe Massa on this lap. Alonso

:43:06.:43:10.

was penalised in the past, it was perceived as blocking him and

:43:10.:43:20.
:43:20.:43:28.

that time by Felipe Massa. Button looks like he will be the third man

:43:28.:43:33.

to put a time in, then he will be followed by Sebastian Vettel and

:43:33.:43:41.

Hamilton. As we look urgently back towards Sebastian Vettel, here he

:43:41.:43:51.
:43:51.:43:51.

is. What can Hamilton do about that? It is second at the moment,

:43:51.:43:59.

so close to Jenson Button. Red Bull, McLaren, McLaren, Ferrari. We have

:43:59.:44:04.

not seen what Mark Webber can do yet. Is he still in the pits? Some

:44:04.:44:14.
:44:14.:44:21.

of the men going for one run, would going to have one flying lap.

:44:21.:44:31.
:44:31.:44:33.

attempt. Mark Webber is still in the pits. That is the engine thing

:44:33.:44:40.

again. Mark Webber has an older engine than everyone else. I will

:44:40.:44:50.
:44:50.:44:56.

ask them about that after the session. Sebastian Vettel on the

:44:56.:45:04.

absolute edge of the grid through that chicane. He has done a mighty

:45:04.:45:13.

middle section as well. He made a mistake with a massive amount of

:45:14.:45:23.
:45:24.:45:25.

oversteer. That has cost him some time. Here we go. He just left

:45:25.:45:30.

nothing. We joined him in the middle of that corner when we were

:45:30.:45:37.

on board with him and it was terrifying. He is still the fastest

:45:37.:45:44.

middle sector of anyone in qualifying. Absolutely amazing.

:45:44.:45:50.

Then in the final corner he just asked a bit too much. Well done to

:45:50.:45:58.

the cameraman for capturing that. And Sebastian Vettel has had a slow

:45:58.:46:04.

first sector. Do you think that has cost him pole position? It could

:46:04.:46:14.

have done. Putting on another set of tyres. Nico Rosberg then comes

:46:14.:46:23.

over the line. Only in 7th place. He is on Bahadur set of tyres as

:46:23.:46:33.
:46:33.:46:44.

well. -- harder. We need to manage that KERS temperature. Eating some

:46:44.:46:54.
:46:54.:46:56.

cooling air into those batteries. - on with driving these cars flash

:46:56.:47:06.
:47:06.:47:09.

out. -- flat out. I come back to the point that degradation, it is

:47:09.:47:16.

less important here surely than on other tracks to save your tyres.

:47:16.:47:23.

Historically you used to do one stop here. You just got faster and

:47:23.:47:33.
:47:33.:47:39.

faster as the fuel burnt off. But it has changed now. Rosberg still

:47:39.:47:49.
:47:49.:47:49.

going but on those harder tyres. Wherever it finishes that lap in a

:47:49.:47:59.

fit place. -- Mark Webber. And Sebastian Vettel comes back out

:47:59.:48:09.
:48:09.:48:12.

with two minutes remaining. He has got Bruno cellar in front of him.

:48:12.:48:19.

In fact, it loads of cars in front of him. Sebastian Vettel will be

:48:19.:48:25.

the last one to set a quick lap. Ferrari have sent both drivers out

:48:25.:48:34.

together. So Sebastian Vettel under pressure now after that error. He

:48:34.:48:44.
:48:44.:48:45.

is at the back of a queue there. Try to time yourself to the cars in

:48:45.:48:55.
:48:55.:48:59.

front, it might give you a tow. This is so frustrating. Jensen

:48:59.:49:03.

Button they're getting out of the way of Mark Webber - when you're

:49:03.:49:10.

trying to get yourself Wilde up in two-lap, and there is someone in

:49:11.:49:18.

the way. Sebastian Vettel is at the back of that you. The only man not

:49:18.:49:28.
:49:28.:49:29.

in it is Nico Rosberg, out by himself. Hamilton is that the front.

:49:29.:49:35.

And the problems that Sebastian Vettel has come up he has backed

:49:35.:49:41.

off to give himself some space. He crosses the line it with about 15

:49:41.:49:49.

seconds to go. Mercedes have been mighty on his lap. It is all to

:49:49.:49:58.

play for at the moment. Nine cries out on track. Lewis Hamilton I

:49:59.:50:08.
:50:09.:50:09.

think has gone too deep into the second chicane. He will then be

:50:09.:50:16.

backing up Michael Schumacher who was right behind him. Here is Mark

:50:16.:50:26.
:50:26.:50:30.

Webber followed by Jensen Button. And there is a queue. Michael

:50:30.:50:35.

Schumacher has passed Lewis Hamilton. Lewis Hamilton has

:50:35.:50:42.

effectively had to give up on this lap. We watch Mark Webber go over

:50:43.:50:50.

the line. 4th place for Mark Webber. Jensen Button just behind him.

:50:50.:50:54.

Michael Schumacher or crosses the line and go as servants. Jensen

:50:54.:51:04.

Button has pitted, that is why we did not see him. Sebastian Vettel

:51:04.:51:11.

is over the line. Despite all of the problems. He was at the back of

:51:11.:51:16.

the queue, the last man to get a shot at pole position, and he has

:51:16.:51:24.

done it by half a second. It was Hamilton who made a mistake. Mark

:51:24.:51:33.

Webber just was not fast enough in its 5th place. Pole position, how

:51:33.:51:43.

about that! Yes! That is what we are talking about. They cannot stop

:51:43.:51:53.
:51:53.:51:59.

him. His Christmas has come early. Let's just talk about that lap.

:51:59.:52:09.

This is where Lewis Hamilton makes a mistake. Just a little white

:52:09.:52:17.

through the exit. -- wide. That pretty much backed up Schumacher or

:52:18.:52:27.
:52:28.:52:41.

as well. Let's just talk about that lap. Over steering all over the

:52:41.:52:50.

place. Then he has won flying lap left and he is on pole by one

:52:50.:52:57.

second. The mentality of going back out with a car that has almost spat

:52:57.:53:04.

you off the race track. He could just his differential, who knows

:53:04.:53:09.

what he did. But half a second faster than it Lewis Hamilton and

:53:09.:53:14.

Jensen Button. A remarkable qualifying performance. Let's take

:53:14.:53:21.

a look at this light that he had. We saw him fighting the Red Bull.

:53:21.:53:30.

Then in the middle of that she came, jockeying for back around. -- the

:53:30.:53:40.
:53:40.:53:52.

chicane. 340 kilometres an hour into that first chicane. It did not

:53:52.:54:02.
:54:02.:54:13.

affect his exit. Under the bridge. Then pulls the car back a cross. It

:54:13.:54:22.

is difficult to get the site there because of the trees. Then sweet as

:54:22.:54:32.
:54:32.:54:50.

you like On The Run out through get it wrong now. Touches the white

:54:50.:54:57.

line and then it hard on the power. And the shortest line to the

:54:58.:55:05.

chequered flag. And an incredible pole position. The 20th pole

:55:05.:55:14.

position of his relatively sharp -- George Formula 1 career. And he is

:55:14.:55:22.

the man in Monza. And this is not a circuit where Red Bull have ever

:55:22.:55:31.

ring want a race. But the start from the front tomorrow. And the

:55:31.:55:41.
:55:41.:55:48.

two Ferrari drivers there. Giving themselves up tow around. There

:55:48.:55:54.

aren't down sides to that slip streaming mechanism. You get

:55:54.:55:58.

nothing for nothing in this world. You have to fight for it and I do

:55:58.:56:03.

not see why this would be an advantage. In the end Ferrari did

:56:03.:56:12.

not come into play too much. Let's take a look at that slip behind the

:56:12.:56:19.

wheel from Lewis Hamilton. And here is Christian Horner, the man at the

:56:19.:56:29.
:56:29.:56:31.

head of the team. Well done. Yes, he was really showing a massive

:56:31.:56:36.

margin. This has not been a good circuit for asked to get pole

:56:36.:56:42.

position here is beyond our expectations. It was a quick

:56:42.:56:46.

turnaround after that mistake in the first part. We needed to

:56:46.:56:55.

complete the lap and it was an unbelievable job by him. Why did

:56:55.:57:01.

Mark Webber only took one of run? Are you saving the engine?

:57:01.:57:06.

wanted to do that after the first round of qualifying. It is

:57:06.:57:12.

something he wanted to do. With hindsight he would have been better

:57:12.:57:19.

to do two laps. But we decided to go with it. Well done indeed. That

:57:19.:57:23.

is the inside story of how Red Bull managed to get themselves poll

:57:23.:57:32.

position. It is the magnitude. Half the second a round here is unheard

:57:33.:57:38.

of. And when you have that talent behind him. I think the mistake

:57:38.:57:43.

that Lewis Hamilton made cost him. Because traditionally Jensen it is

:57:43.:57:50.

the racer but Lewis Hamilton is quicker than him. So I am surprised

:57:50.:57:56.

that Lewis Hamilton is not close at two Sebastian Vettel. This was a

:57:56.:58:01.

very big margin that Red Bull have pulled off. And Lewis Hamilton,

:58:02.:58:07.

just giving you a tiny glimpse into how tight the margins are up in

:58:07.:58:17.
:58:17.:58:19.

Formula 1. One mistake and it is blown. It was an interesting

:58:19.:58:24.

qualifying for you today. It looked like you're doing the minimum at

:58:24.:58:29.

some stages. Were you saying the engine? We were just trying to

:58:29.:58:39.
:58:39.:58:43.

manage some KERS stuff. I made it difficult for the team because I

:58:43.:58:53.
:58:53.:58:53.

had not planned exactly what I wanted to do. I did not choose the

:58:53.:59:00.

best programmes so I apologise to the engineers. But we can still

:59:00.:59:06.

raise from there. Week under performed today but we will come

:59:06.:59:16.
:59:16.:59:18.

back tomorrow. Is KERS working for you? It was intermittent on the

:59:18.:59:23.

last run but it should be OK tomorrow. And am rather crestfallen

:59:23.:59:29.

Mark Webber after qualifying not for the first time this season.

:59:30.:59:36.

Paul di Resta is with us now. How are you feeling after the second

:59:36.:59:42.

part of qualifying? I would not say frustrated, I would say unfortunate.

:59:42.:59:49.

You're looking for the slipstream and that is difficult to find the

:59:49.:59:59.
:59:59.:59:59.

faster car. We did a good lap. I think Bruno Senna got a little

:59:59.:00:03.

slipstream of Lewis Hamilton. But we're perhaps in a stronger

:00:03.:00:12.

position tomorrow with the new tyres. Exactly what I ate was

:00:12.:00:19.

saying. This gives you a better chance for the race having the

:00:19.:00:29.
:00:29.:00:31.

ability to choose the tyres and the a different choice on tyres, and it

:00:31.:00:37.

will be close this weekend. And you are in front of your team-mates,

:00:37.:00:47.
:00:47.:00:47.

which always puts a smile on a driver's phase. Yes, and our change

:00:47.:00:52.

improved our lap performance so it was a win-win situation. The ingots

:00:52.:00:55.

crossed for you tomorrow. Let's crossed for you tomorrow. Let's

:00:55.:01:00.

hear from the men starting at the very front. It is time for the

:01:00.:01:05.

drivers' press conference. It looked like it might be a little

:01:05.:01:11.

close. We thought it would be much closer than that. It is why I had a

:01:11.:01:15.

good improvement already in the first run for my second lap. We

:01:15.:01:23.

were not sure if the tyres worked best in the first or second lap,

:01:23.:01:27.

but I made a mistake and stayed out, and focused only on the last run we

:01:27.:01:33.

had. The last lap I did on my own, without anybody. On the second run

:01:33.:01:39.

I had a few cars ahead down the road, which always helps in Monza,

:01:39.:01:46.

but we would not expect or think of going on pole position by that big

:01:46.:01:54.

margin. This track did not suit us for the last few years, to be fair,

:01:54.:02:02.

but the balance is perfect for this car. We don't carry a lot of

:02:02.:02:08.

weighing around and on downforce it is slippery but we are quite quick

:02:08.:02:11.

in all other sectors and I was able to put it together so I am very

:02:12.:02:16.

happy today, also considering that I think we have quite a racy

:02:16.:02:21.

approach so I am pleased with today. Lewis, the final run didn't work

:02:21.:02:26.

out for you after it had seemed close until then. Is this the one

:02:26.:02:32.

that got away today? And I don't think so. I think perhaps we could

:02:32.:02:37.

have got another couple of tenths out of the car, but firstly the

:02:37.:02:43.

guys did a fantastic job and clearly we are very competitive.

:02:43.:02:48.

Both me and Jenson Button are able to be up here, so there is a good

:02:48.:02:57.

step, but today in that last lap that was untouchable for me. Jensen,

:02:57.:03:02.

a strong result here last year. How do you see tomorrow's race shaping

:03:02.:03:07.

up? Third is normally a pretty good place to start but here you can't

:03:07.:03:12.

get past the front two so it is tricky. Looking at today, I totally

:03:12.:03:19.

agree with Lewis. Even if we got a bit out of the car, we are never

:03:19.:03:23.

going to challenge Sebastian. The strange thing is these guys don't

:03:23.:03:30.

look like they are carrying a lot of wing but they are half the

:03:30.:03:38.

second quicker than us on the corner. We have to concentrate on

:03:38.:03:43.

tomorrow now and look forward to a good race. We are both in great

:03:43.:03:47.

positions and we can score some good points here. It is not so

:03:47.:03:50.

important here to be on pole position like in previous

:03:50.:03:55.

competitions because you have DRS, so we will see. We will certainly

:03:55.:04:03.

see about that. The pole position man has won here on more occasions

:04:03.:04:13.
:04:13.:04:13.

the new teams, Team Lotus. They round off the back of the grid, so

:04:57.:05:01.

that is how things are set up for the race tomorrow. Congratulations

:05:01.:05:04.

to Michael Schumacher, he knows what it takes to be quicker than

:05:04.:05:09.

Nico Rosberg and how to win round here. There are dislike autumn for

:05:09.:05:18.

him in his life. He has found himself a new reinvigorated man.

:05:18.:05:23.

Since Canada he has grown and grown, and beating Rosberg is not be

:05:23.:05:28.

forgotten about, that is a milestone for him. He has enjoyed

:05:28.:05:33.

the last few months of his racing, let's hope he can continue.

:05:33.:05:35.

Fernando Alonso has struggled and Fernando Alonso has struggled and

:05:35.:05:38.

qualifying up against Felipe Massa for the last few races, however,

:05:38.:05:45.

today he was in front of his team- mate. Let's hear from him. How do

:05:45.:05:51.

you feel? It is good, obviously we didn't find the right balance or

:05:51.:05:55.

the right speed all weekend. Yesterday we struggled with the

:05:55.:06:00.

balance of the card, and the top speed today, we are still lacking a

:06:00.:06:07.

bit of braking stability. We are never happy with the balance and

:06:07.:06:11.

that is the negative of the weekend so far because we are not totally

:06:11.:06:15.

confident in the car, but the positive thing is the result. In

:06:15.:06:19.

4th place it opens a big possibility for tomorrow because at

:06:19.:06:24.

the start you are in a very good position. You will be fighting in

:06:24.:06:27.

the first places for the first couple of laps so it opens a big

:06:27.:06:31.

possibility of the podium tomorrow, which, regarding how the weekend

:06:31.:06:37.

went so far, it is very good news. Your team-mate was giving you a tow,

:06:37.:06:42.

was that a strategy for qualifying today? We know how important the

:06:42.:06:50.

slipstream is in Monza so we both tried to find someone always. Both

:06:50.:06:54.

cars were slowing down, trying to let someone passed in the other lot

:06:54.:07:02.

so it was a nice game. It was good, and I think everyone gets the tone

:07:02.:07:12.
:07:12.:07:25.

at the end of Q3, apart from the Grand Prix on BBC One. Tomorrow we

:07:25.:07:32.

will be talking about how to race and show and you how not to. Good

:07:32.:07:42.
:07:42.:07:50.

Do you feel at the moment you are emerging as a team leader? A I'm

:07:50.:07:54.

sure Lewis would say he is the team leader but I would say it I am. We

:07:54.:07:59.

are both working as hard as we can in the same direction but it is

:07:59.:08:04.
