Last year, this was the scene of a monumental Grand Prix. At four

:00:59.:01:03.

hours and four minutes, it was the longest F1 race in history, a war

:01:03.:01:07.

of attrition and the battle against the elements, but one man

:01:07.:01:17.
:01:17.:01:27.

MUSIC. You can't see anything. What is he

:01:27.:01:32.

doing? This is a difficult and for McLaren.

:01:32.:01:36.

Everything pretty much went wrong that could have gone wrong,

:01:36.:01:41.

crashing with Lewis, crashing with Fernando. Getting a puncture,

:01:41.:01:48.

breaking my front wheel, having a drive-through, the pit stops.

:01:48.:01:53.

Jenson Button is on the charge. Having a tough year that I have had

:01:53.:01:58.

has helped me, it made me realise you can't give up. Whatever happens,

:01:58.:02:03.

and never give up. This is brave stuff from Jenson.

:02:03.:02:10.

Every move you make feel so good. This race is not over. TEAM RADIO:

:02:10.:02:16.

We can win this race. What can Jenson Button do? I didn't know if

:02:16.:02:26.
:02:26.:02:29.

I would get past Sebastian on the He deserved this win, everyone

:02:29.:02:34.

knows that. TEAM RADIO: Brilliant, Jenson.

:02:34.:02:38.

EDDIE JORDAN: Am I watching what I am watching, this is the best

:02:38.:02:42.

racing? My whole career has been a roller-coaster ride and it had

:02:43.:02:50.

ended on a high, which was great. I would say, yes, it is my greatest

:02:50.:02:55.

ever win. Well, what an amazing race, David

:02:55.:03:00.

Coulthard. It was certainly a race everyone will remember. It was the

:03:00.:03:03.

longest ever Grand Prix, just over four hours, we were making all

:03:03.:03:07.

sorts of stuff up in the commentary box but what a great end to the

:03:07.:03:11.

weekend. You have had some dramatic races here, you scored your first

:03:11.:03:16.

point, you have had podium finishes and pole positions, does it hold

:03:16.:03:20.

good memories? It does, there is a great history, an amazing backdrop

:03:20.:03:25.

in Montreal, the teams love coming here and the drivers love it. It is

:03:25.:03:29.

very high speed, tight chicanes. All of the drivers talk about how

:03:29.:03:34.

much they enjoyed but it is a tricky place to tame. Why is it so

:03:34.:03:38.

challenging? It is the high-speed nature of the entries, which is why

:03:38.:03:42.

the drivers love it so much. There is a consequence to any decision

:03:42.:03:50.

you make. If you try to break later, it carries consequences. -- brake.

:03:50.:03:56.

It gets the adrenalin pumping. though this -- this is a temporary

:03:56.:04:06.
:04:06.:04:20.

track, there is a real solid and amazingly, we have had six

:04:20.:04:24.

different winners from the first six races of the year -- race seven.

:04:24.:04:31.

We head back to Europe for the next few races but back this way for the

:04:31.:04:34.

few races but back this way for the penultimate race. David, three

:04:34.:04:37.

world champion still haven't won it yet, you would think they had a

:04:37.:04:42.

good chance this weekend. Record brooks were rewritten in Monaco and

:04:42.:04:46.

we could have a seventh win this weekend and I suspect we will.

:04:46.:04:51.

Lewis Hamilton has been superb on this racetrack in the past, he

:04:51.:04:55.

could be the man most likely. has such an interesting record here,

:04:56.:05:00.

all or nothing. He has won twice but also crashed out twice. It is

:05:00.:05:06.

the nature of this track. He is a very committed driver, which has

:05:06.:05:08.

delivered him consecutive pole positions, but if it goes wrong

:05:08.:05:13.

during the course of a Grand Prix, it can lead to an incident. I think

:05:13.:05:16.

we are seeing a much more controlled Lewis Hamilton, he has

:05:16.:05:19.

the speed we know he has but he is playing the long game. He looks

:05:19.:05:24.

like a man who once the first win of the year. And lot of drivers

:05:24.:05:28.

talking up their chances but there is some other news out there, here

:05:28.:05:37.

is Ben Edwards. Despite rival dreams and objecting

:05:37.:05:41.

to the Red Bull build, know a formal our objections and the issue

:05:41.:05:45.

remains. A halt have been banished and according to Mark Webber, that

:05:45.:05:51.

is the end of the matter. -- be holds. Whatever, 10 or 15 of these

:05:51.:05:55.

go on each year, small interpretations of the Rolls and at

:05:55.:06:00.

they get changed, because that is how Formula One is -- the rules.

:06:00.:06:03.

While Jenson Button has great memories of last year, he is aware

:06:03.:06:07.

that his qualifying this year it needs to improve. 10th and 12th in

:06:07.:06:11.

the last two events, he has been out-qualified six Nell verses

:06:11.:06:19.

Hamilton. -- 6 nil. It is tricky to understand. Here, you do certain

:06:19.:06:27.

things to the car for this circuit and it will help qualifying. Lewis

:06:27.:06:30.

Hamilton has enjoyed three propositions on his four visits to

:06:30.:06:34.

this track. What chance that he could become the seventh different

:06:34.:06:39.

winner of the season? I think anyone can be the seventh winner,

:06:39.:06:43.

even the Marussia drivers have the chance to be the seventh winner, it

:06:43.:06:46.

is so random this year, but we have prepared in the best way possible

:06:46.:06:51.

and I think we are in a strong position, but we are SOME

:06:51.:07:00.

incredibly tough teams. Michael Schumacher has won here and seems

:07:00.:07:04.

impressed by the potential of the Mercedes, as does Nico Rosberg.

:07:04.:07:07.

Everybody seems to think you have a good chance of winning this race,

:07:07.:07:14.

is that how you see it? I seem to think the same thing. We have good

:07:14.:07:18.

straight-line speed because we have the Mercedes engine in the back, so

:07:18.:07:23.

it should suit did pretty well here. While Felipe Massa demonstrated

:07:23.:07:28.

improved form in Monaco, the rumour mill continues to correct --

:07:28.:07:33.

Connect a variety of drivers to the team for 2013. One who seems to

:07:33.:07:37.

have been discounted according to the Ferrari boss is Sergio Perez,

:07:37.:07:43.

but he remains tight-lipped. I will respect his comments, he has enough

:07:43.:07:49.

experience to judge. I am doing my job and I'm doing my best every

:07:49.:07:52.

race and there will be a time when I have to think of my future, and

:07:52.:07:56.

right now I am not really worried. right now I am not really worried.

:07:56.:08:00.

LEE MCKENZIE: Sergio Perez sits an impressive 10th in this topsy-turvy

:08:00.:08:06.

championship. And Fernando Alonso will be delighted to be at the top

:08:06.:08:10.

of the pile. David, although it has been a mixed up season, five world

:08:10.:08:17.

champions in the top seven. shouldn't be surprised, based in --

:08:17.:08:20.

it is a lot closer than the last it is a lot closer than the last

:08:20.:08:23.

two years, but I think it is a reflection of the stability in the

:08:23.:08:26.

regulations, all of the teams are getting closer to the peak of

:08:26.:08:30.

performers. How will Sebastian Vettel field? Coming to this race

:08:30.:08:35.

last year, five pole position and five points, this year only one of

:08:35.:08:39.

each. I think he was frustrated earlier in the season, but I think

:08:39.:08:43.

he has had time to realise that this year will be won by

:08:43.:08:47.

consistency. He won't be able to win as many as he did in his second

:08:48.:08:50.

world championship year. He has looked very good through free

:08:50.:08:53.

practice and he will be pushing it to the limit, as well all of the

:08:53.:08:58.

guys back -- battling for the championship. This is the first

:08:58.:09:01.

high-speed test of the season, with speeds in excess of 300 kilometres

:09:01.:09:07.

per hour. So it demands a different car to watch you have seen earlier.

:09:07.:09:12.

Gary has been looking at what some of the teams bring to the track.

:09:12.:09:17.

After the controversy of the holes in the Red Bull car in Monaco, the

:09:17.:09:24.

FIA has clarified that they are going to implement things as is

:09:24.:09:28.

said in a technical handbook. So it was a job of basically blocking

:09:28.:09:33.

them off. But they have some holes and the front axle that allows air

:09:33.:09:37.

flow of to help cool the brakes. They have had to fill these because

:09:37.:09:43.

they deemed it to be at moving aerodynamic device. To everybody's

:09:43.:09:46.

surprise, Ferrari are leading the world championship, but they need a

:09:46.:09:50.

lot of new developments to Montreal. The inside of the tyres are

:09:50.:09:54.

completely shielded, but more importantly, the exhaust out that

:09:54.:09:58.

have been modified. Like the McLaren, getting better airflow

:09:58.:10:02.

into the inside of the rear tyre means you get more than forced into

:10:02.:10:06.

the diffuser. I think we will see a more competitive Ferrari -- Macro

:10:06.:10:16.
:10:16.:10:18.

And in the Williams, it has a bent section, which means the amount of

:10:18.:10:21.

downforce will be greater. It is about who has the fastest car

:10:21.:10:25.

coming up to the last chicane. Friday are Montreux -- in Montreal

:10:25.:10:31.

was used for a lot of testing. The Red Bull car measures the air speed

:10:31.:10:35.

away from the surface of the car and when she discovered that, you

:10:35.:10:44.

can try and instigate some turning manoeuvres to take advantage.

:10:44.:10:47.

of this effort is to get an edge, but how does it feel for the

:10:47.:10:52.

drivers? Does it feel different? will do, especially when they use

:10:52.:10:55.

all of these different devices, but with restrictions and in-season

:10:55.:11:00.

testing, they have the use Friday's to see how they can make progress -

:11:00.:11:06.

- they have the use of Fridays. Ferrari are a good example of that,

:11:06.:11:10.

they have developed the car well, and that is the Q2 winning the

:11:10.:11:14.

World Championship. It is so important to feel comfortable at

:11:14.:11:17.

this circuit, and a couple of drivers not feeling comfortable

:11:17.:11:21.

drivers not feeling comfortable yesterday. A small mistake can have

:11:21.:11:24.

big consequences, as Heikki Kovalainen found out. This was a

:11:24.:11:29.

strange one. He started to lose the back end coming out of that second

:11:29.:11:34.

chicane but it looked as if the car bottomed out. The entry phase,

:11:34.:11:38.

nicely under control, transition phase, gets on the power, and visit

:11:38.:11:43.

the back end. When he makes a correction, it runs on and it sucks

:11:43.:11:47.

him into the wall. Here we have Bruno Senna at the last chicane.

:11:47.:11:52.

They call this the Wall of Champions because several have

:11:52.:11:56.

crashed here in the past. This is a clumsy one, he is experienced

:11:56.:11:59.

around this track. High-speed breaking into the corner, the

:11:59.:12:09.
:12:09.:12:12.

across the run-off area but he tried to correct and it was a one-

:12:12.:12:17.

way ticket to the wall. So apart from keeping out of the war, what

:12:17.:12:25.

is the success? -- wall. It is the braking zones. You should be

:12:25.:12:30.

running at the same seed Agger teammates, but if you can just E

:12:30.:12:40.
:12:40.:13:08.

Kuyt -- E Kuyt that breaking, you qualifying Ed de Schill at

:13:08.:13:15.

Villeneuve circuit. -- at the Gilles Villeneuve circuit. TEAM

:13:15.:13:21.

RADIO: There is still went on the straight, but a bit less. Intensity

:13:21.:13:25.

has changed a little bit from the morning but not as high as

:13:25.:13:29.

yesterday. Track temperature is now 40 degrees, that is up nine degrees

:13:29.:13:33.

on this morning. Let's get a word from Gary Anderson in the pit lane.

:13:34.:13:43.
:13:44.:13:44.

What can we expect from qualifying exciting time. 16 cars within one

:13:44.:13:50.

second that this morning, so blink and you lose it at these chicanes.

:13:50.:13:57.

It will be something like 15.1, 15.2. The super-soft tyres is

:13:57.:14:02.

perhaps half a second quicker than the soft tyre. But the one thing

:14:02.:14:07.

that is interesting is as the tale went down towards the pits, the

:14:07.:14:12.

cloud cover is there now, so a bit cooler.

:14:12.:14:16.

DAVID COULTHARD: This is Kobayashi moving very wide through Turn One.

:14:17.:14:21.

We saw Jean-Eric Vergne do something very similar this morning.

:14:21.:14:25.

He carried into the tyres as he carried the momentum, that is an

:14:25.:14:29.

example of how not to do it. couple of cars going quickly and

:14:29.:14:32.

Lewis Hamilton is one of them, fastest in both free practice

:14:33.:14:37.

sessions on Friday. Not fastest this morning but third quickest and

:14:37.:14:42.

he has a very good record in Canada. Three propositions at this track,

:14:42.:14:47.

including his first ever in 2007, which led to his first-ever Grand

:14:47.:14:51.

Prix victory, so fond memories of this circuit. He loves the place,

:14:51.:14:55.

doesn't he? He relishes getting close to the walls and challenging

:14:55.:15:05.
:15:05.:15:07.

positions round this track. We saw him in free practise, waving to the

:15:07.:15:12.

crowd, round turn ten. Getting close to the grass. Getting ready

:15:12.:15:19.

to deliver what will be his opening lap time. It's a 1.16.2. He is

:15:19.:15:23.

using the soft tyre. The yellow marked one. Some way off what we

:15:23.:15:27.

saw this morning. He will get a couple of laps out of their tyre.

:15:27.:15:33.

He is likely to go quicker. They will have fuelled the car for a few

:15:33.:15:38.

gaps. We see Sebastian Vettel visualising his lap. He will see a

:15:38.:15:43.

pole position. That is in the first part of qualifying. They are only

:15:43.:15:48.

looking through to the next section. We see Perez coming to finish his

:15:48.:15:55.

opening lap. Yes Sergio Perez. 1.16.1. On the yellow soft tyre.

:15:55.:16:02.

have seen very little degradation. Lap on lap they are building

:16:02.:16:07.

momentum. Massa lost the rear end on entry. So different to what we

:16:07.:16:12.

saw with Kamui Kobayashi who has undersear. Massa on turn in,

:16:12.:16:16.

locking up the rear axle. They will have fuelled the car for three

:16:16.:16:20.

timed laps, to get the opportunity, to build some momentum, and use the

:16:21.:16:25.

fact that the tyres are not dropping off in performance and

:16:25.:16:30.

deliver the lap time. Let us see what these two are tkp doing. Kamui

:16:30.:16:35.

Kobayashi is going fast. Fernando Alonso was going fast, it looks

:16:35.:16:39.

like it it could be a good lap. This is off what he did this

:16:40.:16:44.

morning, he is on the harder of the two compound tyres, the soft as

:16:44.:16:49.

opposed to the supersoft. That was Perez coming through, a moment ago.

:16:49.:16:55.

He skirted that wall. Known as the champions wall, from 1999 where

:16:55.:16:59.

three World Champions crashed into that wall during the race,

:16:59.:17:04.

including Michael Schumacher and others have gone off many times

:17:04.:17:08.

since. Bruno Senna -- hit the wallette yesterday. A nice slide

:17:08.:17:13.

from Paul di Resta. Nico Hulkenberg is second and he goes fourth.

:17:13.:17:17.

steady opening last from Paul di Resta. The forces for is looking

:17:17.:17:20.

stronger in free practise round this Monday trarl track than what

:17:21.:17:24.

we saw in Monaco, they ended up getting both cars in the points

:17:24.:17:28.

there, so good result for them, they will look to try and

:17:29.:17:35.

capitalise on the speed they get from that engine and deliver a

:17:35.:17:38.

strong, we would be would be a top ten qualifying. Michael Schumacher

:17:38.:17:43.

looks to try and continue the good work he did in Monaco by going

:17:43.:17:49.

fastest in qualifying. He is second quickest. He has a tremendous

:17:49.:17:52.

record. Here comes Lewis Hamilton out of the final quarter. Let us

:17:52.:17:56.

see where this puts the McLaren he is seventh at the moment, he goes

:17:56.:18:01.

second. 1.15.3 for Lewis Hamilton and Massa is now on a good lap as

:18:01.:18:11.

well. Now, Gary said to us round 1.15. 1, 15.152, but some of those

:18:11.:18:16.

behind might have to do another run. A bit of a story here developing.

:18:16.:18:22.

Caterham is battling to get through to Q2 and Petrov and Laszlo Kovacs

:18:22.:18:28.

are ahead of Vergne, but they are in that drop zone. Petrov Heikki

:18:28.:18:35.

Kovalainen, Glock, Pic, all in the drop zone. Close and competitive on

:18:35.:18:39.

the time. Could be an opportunity. Jean-Eric Vergne will have to go on

:18:39.:18:43.

the supersoft tyres. Unless he is feeling particularly confident. He

:18:43.:18:48.

missed the morning session having crashed at turn two. Let us watch

:18:48.:18:57.

how to do turn ten. Nice, not too eventful. That is what the drivers

:18:57.:19:03.

need to do on the Pirelli tyres, you don't want to fight it at the

:19:03.:19:13.
:19:13.:19:19.

hairpin. Let us see what it looks out to the wall. He goes fastest.

:19:19.:19:23.

1.14.7 for Sebastian Vettel, that is on the harder of the two tyres.

:19:23.:19:26.

Think what is interesting in that, typically Red Bull have not been

:19:26.:19:32.

strong the last couple of seasons, in straight line speed. Even when

:19:32.:19:37.

they were winning the championship, they would find them outside the

:19:37.:19:41.

top 15, in terms of V max. Sebastian Vettel fastest of all. A

:19:41.:19:45.

lot of the lap time coming from the braking and change of direction in

:19:45.:19:55.
:19:55.:19:56.

this last chicane, in front of the come box. Let us look at Raikkonen.

:19:56.:20:00.

The red marked side walls. Not having a lot of confidence that he

:20:00.:20:06.

can do the job on the slightly slower of the tyres. That is a

:20:06.:20:09.

surprise. Lotus haven't been showing the form we have seen from

:20:09.:20:14.

this this yore, no doubt they have had to go for the softer of the the

:20:14.:20:19.

two tyre compound. Kimi has take an victory in the past. They have to

:20:19.:20:24.

find pace here. He has never been on the front row in Canada.

:20:24.:20:28.

have Raikkonen in 12th behind Grosjean, all weekend and he has

:20:28.:20:35.

backed out of it. He is feeling the need to get clean air, they have

:20:36.:20:39.

been beside each other on the time sheets. Romain Grosjean has been

:20:39.:20:45.

the slightly quicker, can Raikkonen use his experience? We are onboard

:20:45.:20:48.

with Perez, on the supersoft tyre as you can see, the red side walls

:20:48.:20:55.

on the front tyres. And Sergio sits and waits, this long straight to be

:20:55.:21:05.
:21:05.:21:06.

completed. Let us watch him. Such a crucial corner. Gear change in the

:21:06.:21:10.

middle of a coner there from Sergio. You hear that from a throft guys.

:21:10.:21:15.

Across the line and he is tenth fastest. I don't think that is the

:21:15.:21:20.

right way n my view to be quick in that last chicane. When do you a

:21:20.:21:23.

down shift, we see Pastor Maldonado doing it, and Kamui Kobayashi

:21:23.:21:27.

getting on the grass through the exit of turn one, but any way, I

:21:27.:21:33.

want to say when you down shift in the middle of that last chicane, a

:21:33.:21:38.

big power slide, Bruno Senna out of the last chicane. Let us see what

:21:38.:21:42.

he delivers. It is not a big improvement. That is right. He is

:21:42.:21:47.

down in 14th place. Senna needs a good result. Vettel is on a good

:21:47.:21:56.

lap. He might go quirk than 1.14.. He has done a 1.14.6. He is going

:21:56.:22:00.

faster. You are onboard with Paul di Resta in the forces for. He is

:22:00.:22:05.

on the supersoft tyre and he is aiming to move up the order. Nico

:22:05.:22:09.

Hulkenberg is fifth. Paul di Resta displaces his team-mate by a few

:22:09.:22:14.

hundreds of a second. Good effort from both Force India. They should

:22:14.:22:17.

be safe they have been split by Rosberg. I don't know how you could

:22:17.:22:21.

split them, they are so close. You have Vettel on top. Michael

:22:21.:22:28.

Schumacher, Alonso, then Webber, in the drop zone we have Petrov and

:22:28.:22:33.

Heikki Kovalainen, then Jean-Eric Vergne, the two HRTs of Clemence

:22:33.:22:42.

Poesy and Glock. The HRT. We have to give recognition to Pedro de la

:22:42.:22:46.

Rosa as we see Jenson Button finding form on the supersofts and

:22:46.:22:52.

a 14.7. He will get through this first part. Down in the drop zone.

:22:52.:22:58.

Rose groetsing that HRT in -- gross. Pedro de la Rosa. HRT have been

:22:58.:23:02.

working to get themselves out of being the slowest cars in Formula

:23:02.:23:07.

One which they have had an exclusive on in the last couple of

:23:07.:23:17.
:23:17.:23:21.

year, that is not good, through free practise. Petrov quicker than

:23:21.:23:25.

Heikki Kovalainen. It doesn't happen very often that Heikki

:23:25.:23:28.

Kovalainen's team-mate is quicker than him. It might change. We have

:23:28.:23:33.

a bit of time to go in the first set. Pastor Maldonado across the

:23:33.:23:38.

line in the Williams. And at the moment, we will have to see. He is

:23:38.:23:42.

in danger territory in 17th place. Jean-Eric Vergne should get another

:23:42.:23:47.

time lap after the one he is on. We will get a replay of the trin to

:23:47.:23:53.

turn one, locking up. Hits the apex and gets the car positioned into

:23:53.:23:58.

turn two. A bit wide on the entry phase. You can use some of the kerb

:23:58.:24:03.

there. That was good. Let us see whether that was enough. Petrov

:24:03.:24:09.

still not an improvement. 1.16.705. We will have to wait and see what

:24:09.:24:14.

Heikki Kovalainen does. He is on a lap himself at the moment, but it

:24:14.:24:22.

looks as though we will lose the two Caterhams unless something

:24:22.:24:25.

change, Pedro de la Rosa's performance impressive. He was

:24:25.:24:31.

really happy with his lap in Monaco. At the moment he is faster that

:24:31.:24:35.

both of them. Vergne is at risk of dropping a place to him. He has

:24:35.:24:39.

been matching, they have been matching each other, so let us see

:24:39.:24:49.
:24:49.:24:51.

how the lap unfolds. That is a slow time lap. Laszlo Kovacs. Pastor

:24:51.:24:57.

Maldonado goes 13th. Senna by the way is very safe. He is up in

:24:57.:25:00.

seventh. Mald not Senna in the first part. The clock ticking away,

:25:00.:25:04.

it goes to zero. It is OK if you are still on a lap like Jean-Eric

:25:04.:25:07.

Vergne. This is when the pressure is on. He crashed the car in the

:25:07.:25:12.

morning session. His first season in Formula One, he has one lap to

:25:12.:25:17.

get himself up in front of his team mate, which is the ultimate goal

:25:17.:25:23.

for Jean-Eric Vergne, against Daniel Ricciardo. Let us see how it

:25:23.:25:31.

is unfoeding. It not looking good. He is down on that. It doesn't look

:25:31.:25:34.

as though Vergne will be able to displace him. Vergne is the

:25:34.:25:39.

youngest driver on the grid. 22- year-old, in his first season of

:25:39.:25:44.

Formula One. Watch him here. A bit of a lock up. Gathered it together.

:25:44.:25:47.

Comes back out again, and he is going to cross the line, I don't

:25:47.:25:52.

know it will be enough. He stays 20th. Meanwhile cove has gone

:25:52.:25:57.

faster than his team-mate -- Laszlo Kovacs. It doesn't happen he gets

:25:57.:26:01.

outqualified and Laszlo Kovacs has managed to go quicker. But the

:26:01.:26:05.

Caterhams the fastest of the cars that have dropped out. Looking back

:26:05.:26:11.

at a lot of wheel action from Jean- Eric Vergne. He hasn't found his

:26:11.:26:14.

comfort zone. He had difficult any that first section of the track,

:26:14.:26:20.

and that has led through to what will be a very disappointed Toro

:26:20.:26:25.

Rosso driver. It is Sebastian Vettel fastest in the first part of

:26:25.:26:29.

qualifying. Jenson Button second quickest with Hamilton third, then

:26:29.:26:33.

Michael Schumacher fourth, Alonso fifth, ahead of Webber, Pastor

:26:33.:26:40.

Maldonado, improved at the end, he went seventh so just ahead of seven

:26:40.:26:47.

na. Then Kimi Raikkonen,. 15th only for Massa, then Perez, and then the

:26:47.:26:51.

guys then Daniel Ricciardo, then the guys that have not made to it

:26:51.:26:56.

the second part of qualifying. They are Kimi Raikkonen, his Tate maim

:26:56.:27:02.

Petrov. Then Jean-Eric Vergne, Pedro de la Rosa who has outfall --

:27:02.:27:12.
:27:12.:27:14.

outqualified Glock and Pic. And Narain Karthikeyan. A bit of kerb

:27:14.:27:20.

action from him there. He is not a very tal driver. Way too much kerb.

:27:20.:27:24.

Look at the car sliding through the exit. He is charging off. He went

:27:24.:27:27.

quicker than his team-mate. He will be happy about that. But

:27:27.:27:33.

disappointed not to have got through, into Q2. The cars out. The

:27:33.:27:43.
:27:43.:27:45.

drivers are out.. Out after Q1 are you disappointed. I didn't expect

:27:45.:27:52.

us to qualify unless someone has a problem. Since Monaco, we, we can't

:27:52.:27:56.

be expecting that result every weekend, so, in a way I am not

:27:56.:28:00.

surprised we are out, I did make a mistake on the last corner. I would

:28:00.:28:05.

have been closer. I was trying to cut the last corner ant went too

:28:05.:28:11.

much. I launched the car with the kerb. I will try 100%, since

:28:11.:28:14.

yesterday's crash, I am happy about my car crew, they are done an

:28:15.:28:19.

excellent job. The car feels as good as it could at the moment. We

:28:19.:28:23.

are working on the updates and hopefully close the gap later on in

:28:23.:28:26.

the season. It is about finding your limits on the Friday. Tomorrow,

:28:26.:28:31.

what can we expect from you? Classic trend has been, we are

:28:31.:28:35.

closer in the rain than qualifying. I hope we can continue that

:28:35.:28:39.

tomorrow. I think this hot conditions today are quite

:28:39.:28:44.

different to yesterday, so I don't think we can read that yesterday.

:28:44.:28:49.

It's a bit of a long run. I will try to attack and take as many cars

:28:49.:28:53.

as I can and stay on the track all the way through. Thank you. Let us

:28:53.:28:58.

get back to the action now. second stage of qualifying gets

:28:58.:29:03.

under way. Daniel Ricciardo is first out in the Toro Rosso. We

:29:03.:29:05.

have seen his team-mate go out, Jean-Eric Vergne, joining those

:29:05.:29:10.

that have not made it through into Q2. Now then Gary, you were

:29:10.:29:15.

accurate on your prediction of the times required in Q1. Give yours

:29:15.:29:19.

thought, any surprises in, particularly from the front runners

:29:19.:29:26.

and what question expect from this one? The slowest was a 15.5 for

:29:26.:29:33.

rick rbg. Massa was on a 15.1. You will have to get into probably a

:29:33.:29:37.

14.8, 14.6 to get through. It is going to be competitive. I do

:29:37.:29:41.

believe there is half a second on the softer tyres. A lot of the

:29:41.:29:46.

front runners didn't run it. So there is no give me, you have to

:29:46.:29:56.
:29:56.:29:58.

compound for this part of qualifying. Jenson Button coming

:29:58.:30:02.

out early, Fernando Alonso, Nico Rosberg. Not waiting around very

:30:02.:30:07.

long. Kobayashi has got some good clear space in front of him for the

:30:07.:30:13.

moment, it just depends on who might come out of the pits. Sauber,

:30:13.:30:18.

when they were BMW Sauber, had their one and only race victory

:30:18.:30:22.

thanks to Robert Kubica in 2008. A brilliant win and 12 months on from

:30:22.:30:28.

a big accident he had here in 2007. Sauber, their best result has been

:30:28.:30:33.

a couple of fourth-place finishes in Canada in the past, but the car

:30:33.:30:37.

has been looking impressive. But we are watching Daniel Ricciardo. We

:30:37.:30:43.

know it will be hard work for him to get close to being in Q1, but he

:30:43.:30:48.

will be -- he surprised us all in Bahrain when he ended up sixth on

:30:48.:30:55.

the grid. Yes, again, it is showing the unpredictability of this season

:30:55.:31:00.

that we see occasionally what are the mid- teens consolidate in the

:31:00.:31:06.

top 10. -- teams. I wouldn't say Toro Rosso are particularly

:31:06.:31:09.

comfortable on this track but Daniel has got through to the

:31:09.:31:16.

second part of qualifying and has gone early on the super-soft tyres.

:31:16.:31:20.

We will just watch this lap on fault. He has been a consistent

:31:20.:31:24.

finisher this year although he was out of luck in Monaco last time. It

:31:24.:31:28.

is a team that struggles in terms of budget, they don't have much to

:31:28.:31:32.

develop the car through the season, so what they start with, they don't

:31:32.:31:39.

have a lot of options to change it, unlike Ferrari and McLaren. 1: 15.9,

:31:39.:31:47.

Gary by saying we need a 1: 14, so here it is about 1.5 seconds away.

:31:47.:31:55.

On board with Nico Rosberg. His experience and knowledge of the

:31:55.:32:00.

track should put what happened this morning behind him quickly.

:32:00.:32:03.

suspect that Red Bull will get out of the way as they run down on the

:32:03.:32:07.

fastest section of the track. Picks up a little bit of a slipstream,

:32:07.:32:17.
:32:17.:32:18.

and makes a brake suggestion -- adjustment. Unfortunately, the

:32:18.:32:22.

director decides not to give us the on-board view as he slices through

:32:22.:32:29.

the kerbs. We are hearing on the team radio that Fernando Alonso

:32:29.:32:35.

words -- was told that the team want to see a 14.4 from him to

:32:35.:32:40.

become the ball through this part of qualifying. So not too different

:32:40.:32:44.

to what Gary was saying -- to be comfortable through this part of

:32:44.:32:49.

qualifying. Lewis Hamilton relishing their challenge today, to

:32:49.:32:55.

try and take pole position. -- the challenge. He has had a

:32:55.:32:58.

couple already this year and he has qualified top three in terms of lap

:32:58.:33:04.

time at every event this year. His worst was third in Monaco, he has

:33:04.:33:07.

been in the top two in terms of times everywhere else but penalties

:33:07.:33:14.

have affected it. He goes fastest, 1: 14.5. Let's see what Gen gutted

:33:14.:33:24.
:33:24.:33:26.

is up to. Locking on the bumps. let's see what Jenson. If he can

:33:26.:33:29.

finished his lap, he has got a clear run into the last corner to

:33:29.:33:34.

13. He has got Perez in the Sauber in front, so he has just exited

:33:34.:33:41.

cleanly. I suspect this will be the fastest. He does go fastest by a

:33:42.:33:47.

three-tenths, a good lap of, on the super-soft Red Bull tired, Vettel

:33:47.:33:54.

is definitely in challenging -- on the super-soft Red Bull tyres.

:33:54.:34:03.

Ahead of Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. Bruno Senna Williams is 13th, but a

:34:03.:34:08.

few changes up the top. Let's see. He is ninth at the moment. A

:34:08.:34:15.

Michael Schumacher has just gone fourth fastest. -- and Michael

:34:15.:34:19.

Schumacher. The information we have here is telling us that both Felipe

:34:19.:34:27.

Massa and Fernando Alonso in the Ferraris are on the prime tyre.

:34:27.:34:33.

Difficult to get a handle of how much performance gain varies from

:34:33.:34:38.

the super-soft tyres up but they are clearly getting -- but they are

:34:38.:34:41.

clearly getting a sight of. I don't think they think the super-soft

:34:41.:34:45.

will be the better Tyacke if they get through to the last part of

:34:45.:34:51.

qualifying. -- tyre. We are expecting that now, whereas earlier

:34:51.:34:58.

in the year, and that was not a given. Sergio Perez in 14 that the

:34:58.:35:03.

moment. A little bit of work to do there in the Sauber -- 14th at the

:35:03.:35:08.

moment. Jenson Button not running it quite as wide on the exit as

:35:08.:35:17.

some of the others. As he comes across the line, at that keeps him

:35:17.:35:22.

in six Macro. Off -- and that keeps him. Now we are on board with Lewis

:35:22.:35:32.
:35:32.:35:36.

Hamilton and that keeps him in last chicane. So sweet. Lovely.

:35:36.:35:40.

beautiful. Really aggressive on the turning it, but the car just

:35:40.:35:44.

follows his hand movements, no instability from the rear of the

:35:45.:35:48.

car and that puts him in second place at this stage. So he is just

:35:48.:35:55.

behind Sebastian Vettel with a 1: 14.3. Hamilton tried to take

:35:55.:35:59.

another pole position in Montreal. Raikkonen now, tenth at the moment

:35:59.:36:04.

in the Lotus. Both of the Lotus cars still battling away. Maldonado,

:36:04.:36:10.

the Barcelona race winner. TEAM RADIO: My biggest problem is the

:36:11.:36:16.

lock-up. We saw that on the replay earlier, when he hits the bumps.

:36:16.:36:20.

That energy goes in through the front tyre and most of the

:36:20.:36:24.

suspension travel comes in through the side wall of the tyres, and

:36:25.:36:31.

once it starts bouncing it, he is then unloading the front wheel and

:36:31.:36:41.
:36:41.:36:43.

locking up. He obviously feels that middle sector there but a strong

:36:43.:36:48.

final sector from Schumacher. goes into fourth, using the super-

:36:48.:36:52.

soft tyres. Gary, we are about halfway through the second part of

:36:52.:36:58.

qualifying are, what are you seeing in the pits, in terms of the tyres?

:36:58.:37:03.

I think Ferrari are playing quite a good game, they had a run on the

:37:03.:37:07.

harder of the compounds and had a side to lap but they have got

:37:07.:37:13.

themselves into a situation where they are going to get out on the

:37:13.:37:20.

red tyres and the track is cleaner, a bit more rubber down. So instead

:37:20.:37:23.

of potentially having to use two said, they are going to have one

:37:23.:37:29.

run on the soft tyres. -- two sets. We are hearing on the team radio

:37:29.:37:34.

that Nico Rosberg has been told to short shift. Would that be to save

:37:34.:37:40.

fuel or is there any show up there with that Mercedes? -- is then

:37:40.:37:45.

issue with that Mercedes? I heard that myself, I am not sure why.

:37:45.:37:48.

They had a clutch problem this morning but I don't know any more

:37:48.:37:55.

than that. I don't know if they have a problem but if they do, it

:37:55.:37:59.

will be hard to fix in the time available. Fernando Alonso weaving

:37:59.:38:04.

around aggressively as we have seen the Ferrari do to get the

:38:04.:38:08.

temperature into the front. Easy enough to get temperature into the

:38:08.:38:14.

rear, as he likes them up on acceleration, but the lighting also

:38:14.:38:20.

causes a massive amount of heat. Trying to keep it tidy past the

:38:20.:38:25.

grandstand on the outside, a fantastic viewing spot. Those in

:38:25.:38:35.
:38:35.:38:42.

at regarding Fernando Alonso. has just equalled pretty much the

:38:42.:38:45.

best first sector, a couple of hundred so way from what Sebastian

:38:45.:38:51.

Vettel managed, so this is a good lap so far for the Ferrari.

:38:51.:38:55.

Confidence built on this track, if you can get through that first set

:38:55.:38:59.

and get into the more straightforward part of the track,

:38:59.:39:09.
:39:09.:39:14.

which is about straight-line breaking. -- braking. If Fernando

:39:14.:39:17.

Alonso does a nice steady last chicane, this could take him into

:39:17.:39:22.

the top 10 comfortably. That Ferrari is riding the curve here

:39:22.:39:26.

really well, I think they have got the car Seca beautifully to absorb

:39:26.:39:32.

the bump. He goes second-fastest. Faster than Hamilton but not as

:39:32.:39:37.

quick as Sebastian Vettel, who still tops the times. We are

:39:37.:39:41.

looking at Daniel Ricciardo at the moment in the Toro Rosso Rosso. He

:39:41.:39:51.
:39:51.:39:52.

is heading down to the same last what this delivers for the young

:39:52.:39:57.

Australian. He is 11th quickest at the moment. Good improvement on the

:39:58.:40:03.

previous lap. Kimi Raikkonen is then in 12, Paul di Resta 13th,

:40:03.:40:08.

Maldonado is only 14. Bruno Senna, Kobayashi and Sergio Perez are in

:40:08.:40:13.

the drop signed -- drop zone. Daniel Ricciardo seemed to be able

:40:13.:40:22.

to split the two Lotus cars, which had been joined at the hip.

:40:22.:40:28.

Raikkonen would have to run again, it would seem to suggest. Is he

:40:28.:40:33.

able to move up into the top 10? A little bit wide for the Sauber of

:40:33.:40:39.

Kobayashi. He is giving it his all to drag his team into the top 10. I

:40:39.:40:43.

thought the Sauber was looking good in the free practice sessions. It

:40:43.:40:49.

is so close at the moment. One second covers the top 12 at the

:40:49.:40:54.

moment, down to Kimi Raikkonen. It is a fractional amount, so every

:40:54.:41:01.

thousandth of a second counts. is not his personal best middle

:41:01.:41:04.

sector, the first sector was respectable, one-tenth away from

:41:04.:41:09.

the fastest, but he has got time to go another lap, another couple,

:41:09.:41:17.

actually, depending how much Ford - - fuel is on board. It will cost

:41:17.:41:21.

two-lap time, no doubt, they will burn and a couple of kilos per lap

:41:21.:41:26.

but it'll cost you around one-tenth of a second. That burn a couple of

:41:26.:41:34.

then, Felipe Massa and a tenth at the moment. Paul di Resta gets into

:41:34.:41:44.
:41:44.:41:51.

top 10. That shunt he had yesterday mint -- meant the Williams crew had

:41:51.:41:55.

a lot of work to do last night, right up to the curfew, when the

:41:55.:41:58.

mechanics had to leave the car and return to it this morning but they

:41:58.:42:03.

got it dead, brilliant work by the team as ever. -- they got it out.

:42:03.:42:07.

Bruno Senna trying to get into the top 10. Neither he nor Maldonado

:42:07.:42:12.

are looking comfortable. Bruno Senna is 16. Felipe Massa has some

:42:12.:42:20.

work to do. That bit of track it -- traffic ahead of him. Felipe Massa

:42:20.:42:24.

has done a reasonable first sector but his middle sector is not

:42:24.:42:32.

particularly strong, 24.0, compared to 23.7 for the fastest from Vettel.

:42:32.:42:38.

At bit of oversteer has he tended - - a bit of oversteer as he turned

:42:38.:42:45.

in. He has never gone particularly well in Canada. Not enough to be

:42:45.:42:51.

comfortable. He has never been on the podium here. At the moment,

:42:51.:42:57.

he's going to struggle. The Lotus is just lacking real grip. They are

:42:57.:43:01.

running a little less downforce on this Canada track, not as much as

:43:01.:43:05.

it used to, because of the fact that you have DRS available to

:43:05.:43:11.

share the drag, but the Lotus is not comfortable. Grosjean has not

:43:11.:43:16.

been able to improve on either of his first two sectors, so could

:43:16.:43:21.

both of the Lotus cars be out of this shoot-out for the top 10?

:43:21.:43:26.

would be a surprise based on their recent performances. But it is a

:43:26.:43:30.

struggle. It is the first time Grosjean has raced here in Canada.

:43:30.:43:36.

It is not enough for Romain Grosjean, he has not made the top

:43:36.:43:42.

10. He has got one more lap. Maldonado is 15th, does this

:43:42.:43:48.

improve it? Yes, but Kimi Raikkonen is only up to tenth. Hulkenberg has

:43:48.:43:53.

crossed the line, 11th. The cat Felipe Massa attacking that Curbar,

:43:53.:44:00.

throwing himself that this -- a look at. Off -- lookout Felipe

:44:00.:44:06.

Massa attacking that kerb. Is there anyone else? Some -- Grosjean on a

:44:06.:44:11.

reasonable lap and so is Maldonado. I was giving it the thumbs down on

:44:11.:44:15.

Felipe Massa's lap but he did mighty well in that last sector to

:44:15.:44:19.

get himself in. Another man on the move is Maldonado, who has gone

:44:19.:44:26.

fastest of all in the first sector. This session may be over, but a few

:44:26.:44:31.

guys can finish their laps. We will see some changes. Yes, Maldonado

:44:31.:44:35.

desperately on target to get into the top 10 and push Kobayashi out

:44:35.:44:40.

but what about the Lotus cars? Grosjean trying to get a bit more.

:44:40.:44:45.

A good first sector, the Middle nothing special. He has done it, he

:44:45.:44:51.

is in seventh. But Raikkonen... And Maldonado hits the wall on the exit

:44:51.:44:55.

of the last corner. He keeps it going, just, but he has damaged the

:44:55.:45:00.

car. My goodness, he got away with that but he would have been in the

:45:00.:45:10.
:45:10.:45:13.

of the top ten so McLaren breathe a sigh of relief and Maldonado, he is

:45:13.:45:20.

fast, but fast and furious, he does make the odd mistake. He was oh so

:45:20.:45:26.

close to drop it at the last corner, we know that is a tricky one.

:45:26.:45:30.

Maldonado. What a pity. He didn't need to throw everything into the

:45:30.:45:34.

last corner. He was already up. It just got away from him David.

:45:34.:45:39.

got up on the kerb as he went through the left-hander. He was

:45:39.:45:43.

nicely positioned as he carried speed into turn 13, but as he did

:45:43.:45:47.

the change of direction, he got up on top of that white kerb and

:45:47.:45:53.

launched the car. Destabilised and lost the back end. They had seen

:45:53.:45:58.

the purple time come up which meant he was faster than anybody in the

:45:58.:46:02.

first sector. Middle sector wasn't particularly special but it went

:46:02.:46:09.

wrong for him. Same wall that Senna -- Senna hit yesterday. It is being

:46:09.:46:14.

an expensive weekend for Williams so far. The cars that are out,

:46:14.:46:18.

Kamui Kobayashi and Raikkonen, Hulkenberg south as well but Paul

:46:18.:46:22.

di Resta is through. Ricciardo is out. Perez is out. Senna and

:46:22.:46:28.

Maldonado are out of qualifying.. You disappointed. I am disappointed

:46:28.:46:35.

but any way, I think, the last lap was not the best to get into Q3,

:46:35.:46:40.

for some rb we lose some performance during the qualifier,

:46:40.:46:45.

but tomorrow the race will be very long, we have a great pace, so

:46:45.:46:49.

looking forward. The guys are working late on Bruno's car, how

:46:49.:46:55.

damaged is your car? Not much t rear suspension, but nothing that

:46:55.:47:01.

big. Thank yo you very much. Let us get back to the pole position shoot

:47:01.:47:06.

out. The battle on and the final ten minutes of qualifying here in

:47:06.:47:08.

Montreal. Strailyaigt we have McLaren sending Lewis Hamilton out.

:47:08.:47:13.

He has had three pole positions in the past. He loves the circuit. Can

:47:14.:47:18.

he make it a fourth? Lewis Hamilton coming out on the super-soft but

:47:18.:47:24.

Jenson Button on the harder of the two tyres. They are probably a

:47:24.:47:28.

scrub set for Lewis Hamilton. Gary will be able to confirm that. But

:47:28.:47:32.

Jenson Button going out on a brand- new set of the prime tyre. The

:47:32.:47:36.

yellow marked tyre, so whether that is giving us an indication he is

:47:36.:47:41.

not finding the balance he needs on the super-soft tyre, or whether he

:47:41.:47:45.

just, because of the very low degradation he is using this as a

:47:46.:47:50.

sacrificial set to get his eye in for qualifying in this last part of

:47:50.:47:57.

the top ten shoot out. Kimi Raikkonen had problems with his car

:47:57.:48:02.

with pressure so that maybe explains his performance. Gary,

:48:02.:48:05.

what can we expect in this final part of qualifying? I think, you

:48:06.:48:09.

know, we are going to see the guy, you know you need to be on pole.

:48:09.:48:14.

Pole is very important. If you can get out of that DRS done? The first

:48:14.:48:18.

couple of laps which is what Vettel was good at. You want to get away

:48:18.:48:23.

from them. The tyres are looking stable. So there is not a big deal

:48:23.:48:28.

in starting on the super-soft tyre or the soft tyre. But as in Monaco,

:48:28.:48:32.

Vettel was in a good position in the middle stint to make up some

:48:32.:48:35.

position, so I think you might see Button trying to qualify on the

:48:35.:48:40.

hard tyre, because the balance is better. But I think we have to wait

:48:40.:48:45.

the session tout see it. It is going to be interesting the last

:48:45.:48:50.

five minutes. How much of a lap time difference are are we seeing

:48:50.:48:54.

at this track temperature twen the two tyres? You are looking at four

:48:54.:48:59.

tenths. Maybe five tenths. It's a deficit but you do need, you do

:48:59.:49:04.

need that balance to get that half second. We are watching Lewis

:49:04.:49:09.

Hamilton attacking this track. Still keeping his foot hard on the

:49:09.:49:13.

accelerator. Up towards turn eight he comes now. Under the bridge.

:49:13.:49:18.

Tricky right, left combination again, and he is backing it off a

:49:18.:49:25.

bit. He had arm fuls of oversteer he was wide on exit six which is

:49:25.:49:28.

where Sebastian Vettel ran wide last year allowing Jenson Button to

:49:28.:49:32.

pull off their amazing victory on the last lap. So he has felt, right,

:49:32.:49:37.

I haven't got my tyres in the right temperature, the right balance, so

:49:37.:49:43.

he is backed out of it. A bit of weefing on the straight, trying to

:49:43.:49:47.

warp the tyre compound. Move the surface, build temperature and have

:49:48.:49:53.

a good healthy brake. Whenever you see black lines being left on track,

:49:53.:50:00.

that is too much rear slip angle and that costs time. Ferrari has

:50:00.:50:03.

have had ten pole position, Williams have gone well here in the

:50:03.:50:08.

past. They are not going to do it this time because thiether are in

:50:08.:50:11.

the top ten. Mercedes, what can Nico Rosberg do? They came in

:50:11.:50:16.

feeling strong about their chances. Watch him through the chicane, they

:50:16.:50:20.

can use a fair bit of kerb. They have set the car up well in that

:50:20.:50:24.

respect. But I don't think this is going to be the ultimate pace.

:50:24.:50:27.

1.14.6. About half a second o off what Vettel did in the previous

:50:28.:50:32.

part of qualifying. Now we are beginning to see the times coming.

:50:32.:50:38.

Here come the frarroifsen Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa. A good lap

:50:38.:50:44.

from Massa. 1.14.65. He goes fastest for the moment. A lot of

:50:44.:50:48.

pressure en masse is a to deliver. He was strong in Monaco, very close

:50:48.:50:58.
:50:58.:50:59.

to Alonso, and that is a good opening lap from him, -- Massa.

:50:59.:51:03.

Vettel has gone purpose on both his first two sector, so let us see

:51:03.:51:08.

where the opening lap is for Lewis Hamilton. This could be a contest

:51:08.:51:15.

between Hamilton, Vettel and Massa. He goes fastest, ham -- Hamilton

:51:15.:51:19.

quicker than Felipe Massa, Jenson Button on a lap as well, but let us

:51:19.:51:24.

see what Sebastian Vettel can do. It's a quick lap. It is a 1.13.9

:51:24.:51:28.

from Sebastian Vettelment he is looking to make it back-to-back

:51:28.:51:32.

pole positions and he is half a second quicker than anyone else at

:51:32.:51:35.

the moment. Onboard with Fernando Alonso, the Ferrari looking so much

:51:35.:51:40.

better n the hands of Felipe Massa, as well. What can the world

:51:40.:51:46.

championship leader do? Remember, he has that 3 three point margins

:51:46.:51:51.

he needs to qualify up front. And he is second fastest. He is only

:51:51.:51:56.

two tenths slower than vet. He was very quick in the first sectors but

:51:56.:52:00.

amazingly, the Red Bulls have discovered real paint in this last

:52:00.:52:04.

sector, it is the longest shing of flat out, duration on the track and

:52:04.:52:09.

they will do about 14 seconds of 100 percent throttle. It is 60 odd

:52:09.:52:16.

percent of the lap is spent at 100%. Mark Webber is not as strong. That

:52:16.:52:20.

is seven tenths down on what we have seen from his team-mates. Will

:52:20.:52:27.

he come in and do another run? We see a replay of Massa getting up on

:52:27.:52:31.

the kerb. Similar to what we saw with Maldonado. Massa backs out

:52:31.:52:37.

early, allowing the car to regain stability, and accelerating for the

:52:37.:52:40.

line. Track temperature has been going up and down, we are up to 39

:52:40.:52:45.

degrees which is where we started. It dropped to 35 a while ago. This

:52:45.:52:49.

will after feming the teams and how they treat the tyre, a few degrees

:52:49.:52:53.

can make all the difference to the handling. I am not sure how

:52:53.:52:57.

reliable that is. There are clouds round but we haven't seen the sort

:52:57.:53:02.

of, the cloud cover, taking away the sunshine on the race track, so

:53:02.:53:09.

I suspect as we see Emerson, a vittor this this Grand Prix. Former

:53:09.:53:18.

winner of Canadian Grand Prix but not here, it was run at moss port,

:53:18.:53:21.

but great to see him here. Jenson Button, he has been struggling with

:53:21.:53:29.

lock up so far, he is only ninth fastest on the harder tyre, the

:53:29.:53:32.

yellow walled tyre. The hard over the two compounds. Are we going to

:53:32.:53:37.

see him put a set of super-softs on to finish the session? He is the

:53:37.:53:45.

only car on track at the moment. Paul di Resta has yet to go out.

:53:45.:53:53.

Whether he will set a time or bl it will be to cover if anyone else

:53:53.:53:57.

doesn't manage do anything spern special what a contrast you have

:53:57.:54:02.

Jenson Button in ninth and Vettel on pole with 13.9. Sebastian Vettel

:54:02.:54:07.

looking to try and win this race, he hasn't yet won this event, Red

:54:07.:54:11.

Bull haven't won this event ieth very rare. They have won every race

:54:11.:54:17.

on the calendar, except the new ones, but this is one of the one

:54:17.:54:21.

they are missing out on. They have won everywhere else in a few year,

:54:21.:54:26.

amazing record they have managed to achieve. David, you drove last

:54:26.:54:32.

year's Red Bull, last weekend? that was a joy to get behind the

:54:32.:54:36.

wheel of a relatively current Grand Prix car, and the current World

:54:36.:54:41.

Championship car of course. Despite all the years I drove the cars I

:54:41.:54:45.

never fails to amaze you how impressive the deceleration, how

:54:45.:54:49.

impressive the amount of grip there is when you do the turn in to the

:54:49.:54:53.

apex, it really does challenge your senses, and there is no question,

:54:53.:54:57.

we are witnessing a golden era of Formula One with the current crop

:54:57.:55:01.

of cars and drivers. Yes. Vettel one of the six World Champions,

:55:01.:55:04.

there is another one in the background and Vettel the only one

:55:04.:55:08.

of the six champions who hasn't won the race, he wants to put that

:55:08.:55:12.

right. At the moment he is doing everything he can by setting the

:55:12.:55:16.

fastest time. Button is back in the pits, does that mean it is over?

:55:17.:55:20.

Head restraint is coming out. I don't see him looking like he is

:55:20.:55:24.

about to step out of the car. He is holding the the air cooler which

:55:24.:55:29.

the driver uses to lower the cockpit temperature. I suspects

:55:29.:55:33.

they are making some last minute change. He only has a minute-and-a-

:55:34.:55:38.

half. He won't have time to get round. Has the he thrown in the

:55:38.:55:42.

towel? He will start on the yellow tyre, think he is going for a

:55:42.:55:47.

different strategy to these guys who are going on the super-soft

:55:47.:55:50.

tyre and going for ultimate performance, so Vettel will be

:55:50.:55:55.

interested to see that, because he played that game in Monaco, but

:55:55.:55:58.

here in Montreal it is easier to overtake as Jenson Button

:55:58.:56:02.

discovered last year when he came from last to win this thing, and

:56:02.:56:08.

beat Vettel in a final lap. Vettel is on a good lap: He set fastest

:56:08.:56:12.

first sector. Now Alonso has gone fastest and Hamilton has gone

:56:12.:56:15.

fastest in the mid sector, we are witnessing a great climax to

:56:15.:56:19.

qualifying. Here comes Sebastian Vettel. It is looking like a good

:56:19.:56:24.

lap. Will it be enough? 1.13.7. Quicker than before, but the

:56:24.:56:28.

Ferrari and the McLaren of Alonso and Hamilton are going fast.

:56:28.:56:31.

Managing Director my goodness he skirted the wall there, is it

:56:31.:56:37.

enough for Hamilton? No, he is second fastest. Vettel fastest,

:56:37.:56:41.

Hamilton second. We are still waiting for Alonso. Alonso could do

:56:41.:56:45.

it. He is down, a tenth down in the middle sector. But of course, right

:56:45.:56:50.

there with Vettel, so all comes down, to this last section, he has

:56:50.:56:55.

a clean run for the line. Here we go, out in the final corner.

:56:55.:56:57.

Fernando Alonso chasing pole position, Vettel is on top at the

:56:57.:57:03.

moment. It is enough for Ferrari? He has not done it. He is third

:57:03.:57:09.

fastest and Alonso cannot match Vettel's time. Here comes Webber.

:57:09.:57:13.

He displaced Rosberg, Massa is sixth. Grosjean is seventh. What

:57:13.:57:17.

about Michael Schumacher? He is on a lap, but his last lap wasn't

:57:17.:57:20.

anything particularly special, he has done a personal best in the

:57:20.:57:24.

first sector, he is really going to have to throw something out here.

:57:24.:57:29.

He has backed out. He is not happy with the traffic. Hand coming out.

:57:29.:57:34.

That is an indication that was Massa he has to pass as he came

:57:34.:57:39.

autoof turn three and four. Pole position for Red Bull again and

:57:39.:57:43.

back-to-back pole positions here in Canada for Sebastian Vettel. And of

:57:43.:57:46.

course, for the Red Bull team it is their third pole position of the

:57:46.:57:51.

season, that is a decent margin, three tenths of a second over Lewis

:57:51.:57:57.

Hamilton, who once again confirms consistent performance, beaten to

:57:57.:58:02.

pole by Vettel. Different strategy from Jenson Button. He will start

:58:02.:58:08.

from tenth place on the harder compound tyre and hope that that

:58:08.:58:10.

workforce him. Paul di Resta qualifying eighth in the forces for,

:58:10.:58:14.

he will be pleased about that and Grosjean up there as well. He is in

:58:15.:58:20.

seventh in the Lotus, but it is Red Bull that has merged ahead once

:58:20.:58:24.

again, Sebastian Vettel, pole winner in Bahrain earlier this year,

:58:24.:58:28.

and Monaco pole went to his team- mate Mark Webber and pole position

:58:28.:58:32.

here, for Sebastian Vettel, trying to correct the record book and put

:58:32.:58:37.

in win in his record book himself, he wants to take the month yarl

:58:37.:58:40.

victory. Jut, as we know, will be trying something a bit different

:58:40.:58:46.

when it comes to the race tomorrow. Be will that be the correct

:58:46.:58:50.

strategy. He was the man who made it work last year in the changeable

:58:51.:58:54.

condition, but weather forecast for tomorrow is warmer than today. So,

:58:54.:59:00.

let us wait and see what happens for Jenson but Paul di Resta, he

:59:01.:59:05.

will be happy with that qualifying. The man that seems to have

:59:05.:59:11.

rediscovered his qualifying mojo, what an impressive lap. That was a

:59:11.:59:16.

remarkable lap by Sebastian Vettel. And that is incredibly satisfying

:59:16.:59:26.
:59:26.:59:26.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 47 seconds

:59:26.:00:13.

for the double World Champion. LEE MCKENZIE: Son not quite normal

:00:13.:00:17.

service resumed but Sebastian Vettel does get his second pole

:00:17.:00:22.

position of the season, that is sure to be a relief. It is a great

:00:22.:00:26.

pole position as well. Not a track where he has had great success, but

:00:26.:00:31.

a dominant pole position. He spoke to Tom Clarkson and earlier.

:00:31.:00:35.

Congratulations on a bomb at pole position, were you surprised that

:00:35.:00:40.

the gap to Lewis -- on a dominant pole position? A little bit. In

:00:41.:00:45.

practice, you never know exactly what other people have done but we

:00:45.:00:50.

knew it was extremely tired, so in qualifying we expected it to be

:00:50.:00:56.

tight again -- extremely tight. We were able to improve on the last

:00:56.:00:59.

couple of runs on the super-soft tyre and fortunately, the others

:00:59.:01:05.

couldn't keep up, so it is good for us but the race is tomorrow, there

:01:05.:01:08.

have been no points scored so far, but the car was pretty good at the

:01:08.:01:14.

end. You left nothing on the table. You always think there is something

:01:14.:01:19.

here or there but I was very happy. It is not easy to get the complete

:01:19.:01:23.

perfect lap everywhere. So many corners here and so many chicanes

:01:23.:01:28.

and quick changes of directions. It is a short amount of time you have

:01:28.:01:35.

to decide when to brake, and it has to be perfect and has to be good

:01:35.:01:41.

from the start. From the last chicane, maybe, two or 300, but all

:01:41.:01:44.

in all, I was very happy. in all, I was very happy.

:01:44.:01:48.

Quite rightly and you were impressed as well. He talks about

:01:48.:01:52.

the last chicane. We join him here at the first of the chicanes,

:01:53.:01:59.

riding it out towards the wall in to turn five when Olivier Panis

:01:59.:02:03.

crashed many years ago. This is where he lost the victory to Jenson

:02:03.:02:08.

Button last year. No such problems when he goes into one of the tricky

:02:09.:02:12.

corners as you go under the Bridge, there is a change of track surface,

:02:12.:02:18.

and absolutely hitting his apex. As we come down to what turned 10,

:02:18.:02:24.

this was the only obvious mistake, as he gets to the end of the

:02:24.:02:29.

braking zone, a little bit wide but he makes a great recovery. How much

:02:29.:02:34.

you think that last season will play on his mind? -- do you think?

:02:35.:02:40.

It will play on him for the rest of his career, but it will -- he can

:02:40.:02:43.

his career, but it will -- he can make it better this weekend. Mark

:02:43.:02:48.

Webber started fourth tomorrow. De Beers your thoughts on that

:02:48.:02:54.

session. -- give us. Given the session we have had, I was very

:02:54.:02:59.

happy. When they told me I was fourth, I thought, it could have

:02:59.:03:05.

been worse. I didn't get the most out of it, really. I certainly left

:03:05.:03:12.

some time on the table, it was... It was disappointed not to get it

:03:12.:03:15.

all together when it really counts, and that is what we have been doing

:03:15.:03:21.

a lot in qualifying and today, we didn't quite get it. Where do you

:03:21.:03:25.

think you have been losing time compared to Sebastian? He looks a

:03:25.:03:29.

bit more comfortable coming off the chicanes and he looks like he has

:03:29.:03:38.

done a better job in the hairpins. What about tomorrow, you have a a

:03:38.:03:44.

good pace? The car on Sundays has always been solid. It is a bit

:03:44.:03:54.
:03:54.:03:54.

warmer but it is not anything for Lewis Hamilton came here hoping to

:03:55.:04:00.

have his fourth pole position. How Our he will be disappointed, he had

:04:00.:04:06.

a triple run of poor positions. looked at the time difference at

:04:06.:04:14.

the end and he said, that is a lot. Wed you think he lost it? I think

:04:14.:04:18.

he used all of the potential of the car so he will be looking at the

:04:18.:04:19.

engineers and asking where they are engineers and asking where they are

:04:19.:04:25.

losing the pace. Here is the last corner. There is no question he is

:04:25.:04:32.

fully committed. He ran it right to the wall. Look at that, absolutely

:04:32.:04:36.

kissing the concrete. Let's hear kissing the concrete. Let's hear

:04:36.:04:39.

from Lewis. P2 on the grid, congratulations,

:04:39.:04:45.

but are you surprised by the gap to Sebastian? I am not. I think

:04:45.:04:48.

yesterday we were looking quite quick and then this morning, we

:04:48.:04:54.

realised we weren't that quick and the others were seriously fast. I

:04:54.:04:57.

also knew last night, I thought Ferrari were holding back a little

:04:57.:05:01.

bit but I didn't realise the Red Bull would be so quick today. But

:05:02.:05:05.

they were and we have struggled generally with our tyres as you can

:05:05.:05:11.

see with Jenson, and we had to use a lot of them just to get to Q3.

:05:11.:05:17.

Fortunately, I had a new set I was able to use. Just nailing a lap

:05:17.:05:21.

today has been so difficult for us, but I am really happy that I was

:05:21.:05:27.

able to use those tyres on the last lap. Didn't expect the front row.

:05:27.:05:30.

And you did nail it, you got very close to the wall of champions.

:05:30.:05:36.

have got to get as close as you can, just give it a little kiss. You are

:05:36.:05:39.

starting on the dirty side of the grid, do you see that as an

:05:39.:05:44.

advantage? I don't know what the differences generally. A lot of

:05:44.:05:47.

drivers drive over that there decide on a qualifying lap, it is

:05:47.:05:52.

the shortest way from the last corner to the start line. Lewis

:05:52.:05:55.

Hamilton not looking too disappointed but what about Jenson

:05:55.:05:59.

Button? He has tried to turn disappointment into a different

:05:59.:06:05.

strategy. He has not been able to get these tyres and the car working

:06:05.:06:09.

in qualifying. He is the only man to start on the softer tyres.

:06:09.:06:13.

hear from him. What is happening in with your

:06:13.:06:19.

qualifying? Everybody knows you are a fabulous driver, what is going

:06:19.:06:24.

wrong? Haven't got a clue, and I would love to know. You don't have

:06:24.:06:28.

three bad qualifying sessions and understand what is going wrong. The

:06:28.:06:33.

first view of the year were quite good, and then suddenly, I'm just

:06:33.:06:38.

inside the top 10 -- the first three of the year. I don't know but

:06:38.:06:43.

hopefully we will solve it. When you compare your traces with those

of Lewis, where is he gaining on It has been a good day for Ferrari,

:06:55.:07:00.

they have had their best qualifying season so far. Gary Anderson caught

qualifying this year. The car is improving race by race, this is a

:07:12.:07:18.

our objective and I hope that in the next couple of days, we can be

:07:18.:07:22.

ready for a pole position, because I think it is the right time to

:07:22.:07:27.

have it. Anyway, let's see tomorrow. Any other new developments for

:07:27.:07:32.

future races? That has to be the target, it has to be race by race,

:07:33.:07:38.

otherwise the others will jump. It is church a short class of vocation,

:07:38.:07:43.

such short gaps, if you stop it is finished -- such short class a

:07:43.:07:47.

vocation. Fernando seems to be enjoying this battle with the car

:07:47.:07:51.

and everything. That is the atmosphere he likes, so we need to

:07:51.:07:56.

improve the car and he will be the one we go to. Good luck tomorrow.

:07:56.:08:00.

Another great performance by the championship leader, Fernando will

:08:00.:08:05.

be happy with third. A remarkable comeback from Ferrari, leading the

:08:05.:08:10.

world championship, attacking at the track. Let's see if he is

:08:10.:08:14.

smiling, here is Fernando Alonso. You're very quick in practice and

:08:14.:08:18.

to have delivered in qualifying, how are you feeling? Very happy,

:08:18.:08:23.

because the weekend was by far the best weekend so far for us in terms

:08:23.:08:30.

of level of performance and competitiveness, and qualifying is

:08:30.:08:33.

always the time to deliver and confirm all of the good or bad

:08:33.:08:38.

feelings in the weekend, so we have had a very smooth weekend and it

:08:38.:08:45.

seems that the car keeps working well. It is the best position so

:08:45.:08:49.

far this year, the same as Barcelona, and tomorrow we need to

:08:49.:08:53.

finish the job. You have a lot of new parts on the car this weekend,

:08:53.:08:56.

you have made a lot of progress, do you see this as Ferrari being

:08:56.:09:01.

frontrunners from here on? I think so. I think that is the best news

:09:01.:09:06.

for us. We have been competitive in Barcelona, second in the race,

:09:07.:09:09.

competitive in Monaco in a different circuit and we have been

:09:09.:09:15.

on the podium. In Canada, we are fighting for the first row of the

:09:15.:09:19.

grid. Three different tracks and three more or less competitive

:09:19.:09:24.

weekends. This is the best news. Sir Fernando Alonso is a happy man

:09:24.:09:29.

but another have a man is Paul di Resta who starts in a -- 8 tomorrow.

:09:29.:09:39.
:09:39.:09:39.

You must be placed there that went We near the climate would be

:09:39.:09:42.

different -- we knew the climate would be different today and I am

:09:42.:09:47.

glad we stuck with it because we were able to get into Q3 and the

:09:47.:09:50.

car on the long run look that looked equally competitive

:09:50.:09:57.

yesterday. -- looked equally competitive. You are emerging as a

:09:57.:10:03.

team leader in Force India, G were not as strong in qualifying as in

:10:03.:10:08.

Monaco, but it must represent a step forward from the car in terms

:10:08.:10:14.

of performance? I think the Canada package has shown strong. The race

:10:14.:10:18.

place in Monaco was good but I am not going to get to carried away,

:10:18.:10:23.

because when we get to the race, it will be the true potential, but the

:10:23.:10:26.

focus is making sure we have a good car tomorrow. There are points up

:10:26.:10:30.

for grabs and we are ahead of competitors, so to make a

:10:30.:10:34.

difference, we need to use this opportunity. Tell us about the

:10:34.:10:40.

start, things can get messy out there. It came up in the briefing,

:10:40.:10:45.

it does seem to jam up a little bit in the first of two terms. You want

:10:45.:10:50.

to be as far forward as possible, dashed to terms. But I could have

:10:50.:10:56.

got one position further up. But it is the luck of the draw, and that

:10:56.:11:00.

the main thing is to keep your nose clean, because there is nothing to

:11:00.:11:03.

suggest how many stops we will be doing tomorrow and it is playing

:11:04.:11:08.

the game, being there at the end is the game, being there at the end is

:11:08.:11:11.

when it counts. We hope it goes well for you tomorrow. Let's take a

:11:11.:11:15.

look at the grade. Sebastian Vettel gets his second pole position of

:11:15.:11:25.
:11:25.:11:54.

the year. Lewis Hamilton is out of Q1. Pedro de la Rosa gets

:11:54.:11:59.

ahead of the Marussias. Karthikeyan ahead of the Marussias. Karthikeyan

:11:59.:12:01.

is at the back of the grid. Strategy is always important,

:12:01.:12:07.

particularly around here. What can we expect tomorrow? There is no

:12:07.:12:12.

data from last year and Jenson Button actually visited the pits

:12:12.:12:15.

last year six times, but I think a two-stop race strategy looks the

:12:15.:12:19.

two-stop race strategy looks the best solution. It is a little bit

:12:19.:12:23.

faster than the one stop, so I wouldn't be surprised to see both.

:12:24.:12:30.

I think that will be the best way to get rid of those and make sure

:12:30.:12:33.

you have the best tyres. I wouldn't you have the best tyres. I wouldn't

:12:33.:12:37.

disagree, I think it would be possible to do one stop because of

:12:37.:12:40.

the low degradation but there are so many people taking trips through

:12:40.:12:45.

the gravel and the grass that we will see a fuse -- flat spot.

:12:45.:12:50.

year was a thriller but it hasn't provided any data. But will it take

:12:50.:12:56.

a brave team to lead it and will Red Bull look to do that? I think

:12:56.:12:59.

they will, they will plan to do a two-stop strategy and see how far

:12:59.:13:03.

the car can go before the tyres start to fall away, and that then

:13:03.:13:08.

you have to pit. If it is lap 25, they may do one, but I think they

:13:08.:13:11.

they may do one, but I think they will do a to stop. You can see

:13:11.:13:17.

highlights tomorrow night and go on BBC One and BBC One H D. It is late,

:13:17.:13:22.

but don't worry about work on Monday. Gary, David, thank you for

:13:22.:13:27.

your company and thank you very much to you. The last time, the
