Hello and welcome to Brazil and Interlagos. As you can tell, it is

:00:32.:01:16.

raining here once again. Gary Anderson, no surprise that we get

:01:17.:01:20.

wet weather whenever we come to Sao Paulo but it will put a problem in

:01:21.:01:26.

place for Pirelli. It is not the thunderstorm that we always get but

:01:27.:01:32.

it will present problems. The teams have put in a lot of hard work and

:01:33.:01:35.

they will want to make sure everything is OK. Pirelli brought

:01:36.:01:38.

some different tyres here to test. They will want to make sure they

:01:39.:01:42.

have got the basic tire sorted out. I think Pirelli will be a bit upset.

:01:43.:01:48.

But they will still do some running, I am sure. Sebastian Vettel stands

:01:49.:01:54.

on the brink of history, nine race wins in a row. He could do it this

:01:55.:02:03.

weekend. Michael Schumacher, his record of 13 race wins in one

:02:04.:02:08.

season. Gary, do we think this weekend we will see another Vettel

:02:09.:02:13.

domination? He has got nothing to lose. When you have got that

:02:14.:02:18.

opportunity, you go for it. The car will have a good run here. But the

:02:19.:02:23.

weather can change the circumstances. You never quite know

:02:24.:02:27.

the outcome until the chequered flag falls. Let's have a look at the

:02:28.:02:30.

drivers' championship standings. Kimi Raikkonen is not here. Mark

:02:31.:02:48.

Webber in his final race when will be hoping to snatch victory from

:02:49.:02:53.

Sebastian Vettel. The constructors' championship is

:02:54.:03:09.

now the big one. It is worth $10 million. That is a lot of

:03:10.:03:12.

development money for next year. It comes out of the prize-money. This

:03:13.:03:17.

weather again, you never know what will happen. Somebody could move up

:03:18.:03:21.

quickly and get a $10 million bonus on Sunday night. Tom Clarkson is in

:03:22.:03:27.

the pit lane for us. It will not be straightforward, will it? No, it is

:03:28.:03:34.

not and it will be very wet down here in the pit lane. The raindrops

:03:35.:03:36.

are getting bigger and more frequent. The track is now wet. I

:03:37.:03:43.

expect to see the cars going out on intermediate tyres and even rain

:03:44.:03:46.

tyres as the session goes on. This will not be relevant for the weekend

:03:47.:03:51.

because the forecast for Sunday 's drive. We expect to see the team is

:03:52.:03:55.

doing as much work as they can for next year's regulations. At Red

:03:56.:03:59.

Bull, Mark Webber's car has some aerodynamic devices. They are

:04:00.:04:04.

checking the airflow of the front wheel. I expect to see similar

:04:05.:04:09.

things up and down the pit lane. With a beautiful view over Sao

:04:10.:04:14.

Paulo, Ben Edwards and Tony dodgems is in the commentary box for us. It

:04:15.:04:19.

is the final race of the year and we are looking forward to several

:04:20.:04:24.

situations being involved. Tony is the author of an annual. It has been

:04:25.:04:31.

a remarkable season for Red Bull. For the first half of the season it

:04:32.:04:36.

looked like we had a fight on our hands. Notice was there but now Red

:04:37.:04:41.

Bull has steam-rollered it. Now we have this conclusion where Sebastian

:04:42.:04:45.

is trying to do nine wins, Mark I am sure would like to go out with a

:04:46.:04:50.

win. I do not think he will be giving any favours to Sebastian and

:04:51.:04:53.

there will not be any coming the other way for sure. It will be

:04:54.:04:58.

interesting. There is a lot to look forward to, so let's get ready for

:04:59.:05:04.

this first practice session. Yes, let's get things under way in the

:05:05.:05:08.

rain. The lights get ready to go out.

:05:09.:05:23.

Welcome to the final meeting of the year. The final Grand Prix event of

:05:24.:05:31.

the year, around 19 of the 2013 championship. Here we are at

:05:32.:05:36.

Interlagos in Brazil at the Autodromo Carlos Pace, named after

:05:37.:05:42.

the driver who took his one and only victory here in Brazil. It is a

:05:43.:05:46.

great place to bring the season to its conclusion. Many times we have

:05:47.:05:49.

seen the Championship wrapped up here, as we did 12 months ago, in

:05:50.:05:53.

that remarkable race, Sebastian Vettel spinning on the first lap up

:05:54.:05:58.

after contact with Bruno Senna but winning in sixth place -- finishing

:05:59.:06:02.

in sixth place and winning the Championship. It is a great circuit,

:06:03.:06:09.

a wonderful track to drive. Gary Anderson and I walked the track

:06:10.:06:13.

yesterday to get some familiarity with it. We have been around a few

:06:14.:06:17.

times in cars or on foot. It is always an interesting place to go

:06:18.:06:20.

around. It is virtually on three levels. There is a lot of elevation

:06:21.:06:25.

change. The lowest point is when they come out of turn five and the

:06:26.:06:28.

highest point is that the start finish line that there is almost a

:06:29.:06:32.

middle layer where there are the hairpins on the infield where

:06:33.:06:36.

traction and turning is crucial. Lewis Hamilton is getting ready in

:06:37.:06:40.

the Mercedes Garrard. He is in third place. There is no chance of

:06:41.:06:47.

catching Fernando Alonso in second. Hulkenberg is only one point behind

:06:48.:06:50.

Paul di Resta and we know the Sauber has been running strongly in recent

:06:51.:06:54.

events. There is a chance for Hulkenberg to get into the top ten

:06:55.:07:02.

in the Championship. Tony Dodgins is with me. He is the author of the

:07:03.:07:11.

auto course annual. I am always intrigued to see who gets into the

:07:12.:07:15.

top ten. It reflects the equipment they have at their disposal as

:07:16.:07:18.

well. You talked about Nico Hulkenberg. . It will be interesting

:07:19.:07:27.

to see where he ends up next year. Still no confirmation on where he

:07:28.:07:31.

will be. It looks like he will be at Force India but no actual

:07:32.:07:35.

confirmation. He was talking yesterday to the press to say

:07:36.:07:39.

nothing is signed and sealed as yet but he looks pretty confident that

:07:40.:07:43.

he will be somewhere. Roman grow Sian was the star of the show last

:07:44.:07:51.

time -- Roman Grosjean. And Lotus are still in with a shout of chasing

:07:52.:07:56.

down Ferrari for third in the Championship. Second, third and

:07:57.:08:00.

fourth are still open between Mercedes, Ferrari and Lotus. 10th

:08:01.:08:05.

place at the moment the longs to Marussia. Cars were bargaining into

:08:06.:08:08.

their last race as an engine supplier. -- cause worth. Kate are

:08:09.:08:17.

hoping for a wet race. This man, Mark Webber, going into his last

:08:18.:08:22.

ever event as a Formula One racing driver. What a brilliant career it

:08:23.:08:27.

has been for Mark Webber. Never quite stepping onto the top as world

:08:28.:08:34.

championship. In 2010 he became very close. A team which did not have

:08:35.:08:39.

success this year which they might have expected last year was the

:08:40.:08:44.

McLaren team. Tom Clarkson is with Sam Michael. Rain at Interlaken is,

:08:45.:08:54.

how does it expect -- rain at Interlagos, how does it affect

:08:55.:08:58.

things? When you run on slick tyres you want to take a lot of

:08:59.:09:03.

measurements of the profile. After the mechanics instrumented all the

:09:04.:09:05.

cars to have the equipment on the car, they have had to strip it off.

:09:06.:09:11.

It is a pain but it is the same for everybody. Will we see much running

:09:12.:09:18.

from you? We are going out now. At the moment it is intermediate

:09:19.:09:21.

conditions, not all wet. In terms of what running we decide to do, it

:09:22.:09:26.

will be wept as well tomorrow. We cannot consume too many tyres. We

:09:27.:09:32.

have an extra set for today. What about your chances this weekend?

:09:33.:09:36.

Jenson said he was hoping to get a podium. If we are like this,

:09:37.:09:40.

anything could happen. It is classic Brazil. It was a win here last

:09:41.:09:47.

year, it has been a long 12 months for everyone at McLaren, hasn't it?

:09:48.:09:53.

F1 is a competitive industry. We would not want it any other way. It

:09:54.:09:58.

is a long time since they have had a podium. They have not even had a

:09:59.:10:04.

fourth place finish. It is 1966 since they have not had a fourth

:10:05.:10:07.

place finish. It is not good from McLaren's point of view. Lewis

:10:08.:10:12.

Hamilton made the jump from McLaren to Mercedes and it has proved to be

:10:13.:10:16.

right. A year ago nobody would have said that. They would have said, why

:10:17.:10:22.

is he doing it? There was smart thinking behind that and it has

:10:23.:10:26.

worked out well for him. He has had one victory so far and some strong

:10:27.:10:32.

pole positions. Some of your comments are coming in and they have

:10:33.:10:37.

been coming in during the week. They have been using the hashtag BBC F1.

:10:38.:10:44.

Some of you have been giving your best and worst moments of the year.

:10:45.:10:49.

Several of you have said the best moment was Hamilton winning in

:10:50.:10:53.

Hungary but they said the worst was Lewis's tyre blow out at

:10:54.:10:56.

Silverstone. Some of you were there watching that. Lewis Hamilton looked

:10:57.:11:01.

to be in good shape at Silverstone until the tyre went. Yes, he was

:11:02.:11:10.

leading that event but then Nico Hulkenberg picked that up. That in a

:11:11.:11:15.

way was a turning point for the whole season I think when Labour

:11:16.:11:19.

brought the other tyres back and the competitive pit are changed and Red

:11:20.:11:22.

Bull went from strength to strength. That is a key issue in the whole

:11:23.:11:28.

year. The change of tyres has been an important issue. It suited some

:11:29.:11:33.

teams more than others. Nico Rosberg is getting ready to come out. It is

:11:34.:11:38.

an interesting rivalry which has existed between Nico Rosberg and

:11:39.:11:45.

Lewis Hamilton. I think there will be a lot of intrigue there because

:11:46.:11:50.

Hamilton and Ross Berg have been there a similarly matched in terms

:11:51.:11:54.

of results but going about it in a slightly different way. Hamilton is

:11:55.:11:57.

further up in the Championship than Nico Rosberg. But he is slightly

:11:58.:12:03.

ahead in terms of race victories. There is Jenson Button. He is

:12:04.:12:09.

looking at trying to get a podium finish to finish this season off in

:12:10.:12:12.

a better way for McLaren. And this is the last I we will see the cars

:12:13.:12:17.

like this in this format. Completely new rules next year mean the cars

:12:18.:12:24.

will look very different. They will still be single seater Formula One

:12:25.:12:27.

cars with all the bits in the same places but they will look very

:12:28.:12:32.

different. Quite a lot of people are saying they will not look very

:12:33.:12:37.

attractive. Absolutely. Let's get down to Gary. You are in the pit

:12:38.:12:41.

lane. Are you seeing anything exciting? Everyone is just getting

:12:42.:12:47.

ready. We are keeping an eye on the Red Bulls with their measuring

:12:48.:12:53.

equipment. As Sam Michael said when the tyre profile changes it effects

:12:54.:12:57.

the airflow. At the end of the day you have to try and analyse that.

:12:58.:13:02.

The new regulations mean the front wings will change how the airflow

:13:03.:13:07.

goes around the tyre. Quite a lot of changes as you said, Ben. The lower

:13:08.:13:12.

chassis and lower nose. I think beauty is in the eye of the

:13:13.:13:20.

beholder. If you make the chequered flag first the cars suddenly become

:13:21.:13:25.

very nice. I spoke to one team personnel member yesterday and he

:13:26.:13:28.

said the first drawings he saw of next year's car, and he's not an

:13:29.:13:32.

engineer, it gave him a shock as to how the car looked and it was not

:13:33.:13:38.

very pretty. But the design has been changing a little bit and hopefully

:13:39.:13:42.

it won't be quite as unattractive as it first appeared. I think we will

:13:43.:13:46.

see some slightly odd appendages that the front. They have a slightly

:13:47.:13:49.

revised crash structure at the front. Yes, the crash structure

:13:50.:13:56.

there has to be a certain area where it is 50 millimetres back at the

:13:57.:14:00.

side of the nose which is to stop penetration from the side of the

:14:01.:14:09.

chassis if you get T-bone. That is a noisy Marussia. Less than half the

:14:10.:14:17.

height of it is now. It is interpreting the regulations which

:14:18.:14:23.

is the big Rob Lum, trying to see if it will let you do something

:14:24.:14:30.

different -- big problem. The teams have engineers looking at this. The

:14:31.:14:35.

big test next year in January will have some strange devices.

:14:36.:14:47.

Jenson Button making a practice. There, but we have been joined by

:14:48.:14:50.

the team principal. Good morning, Christian. How are you today? Very

:14:51.:14:58.

good. Hands going into this weekend, of course, a huge weekend for both

:14:59.:15:05.

of your drivers. -- plans. Sebastian Vettel trying to match with nine

:15:06.:15:14.

wins or 13 against Schumacher. How are you dealing with that? It is

:15:15.:15:19.

going to be exciting because they are both very excited about that. It

:15:20.:15:24.

is going to be a fascinating weekend. Plus the fact that we have

:15:25.:15:28.

some interesting weather due over the next couple of days as well.

:15:29.:15:34.

Yeah, it is going to be very tricky conditions, I think, for everybody,

:15:35.:15:38.

as we can see from how things have started today. A quick question

:15:39.:15:42.

because there are reports in a couple of newspapers that Bernie

:15:43.:15:46.

Ecclestone has been saying you would be his ideal replacement! We going

:15:47.:15:52.

to see a Jane -- a change of job for you? He is going to be here for a

:15:53.:16:00.

long time to come. He is in great shape and still doing some great

:16:01.:16:04.

deals for the sport. My focus is fully on this team and it is for the

:16:05.:16:11.

foreseeable future. But is it something you would maybe think

:16:12.:16:15.

about in the future yourself? I can't see how any one individual can

:16:16.:16:19.

replace Bernie. What he does is quite unique and it will be a very

:16:20.:16:24.

sad day for the sport when he is no longer here, so, as they say, my

:16:25.:16:28.

focus is very much on this team and the job I have to do here and what I

:16:29.:16:33.

want to achieve more in the future. We just have some shots of Mark

:16:34.:16:37.

Webber. Can you explain to us the big break on his car at the moment?

:16:38.:16:45.

What it is doing? It is a dynamic advice measuring airflow around the

:16:46.:16:48.

car and it is an opportunity to have a look at how some of the airflow

:16:49.:16:53.

works. So he will be doing some laps with it as we gather data. And as we

:16:54.:16:58.

start looking towards next year as well. You think you will get a

:16:59.:17:03.

chance to run the prototype ready tyre this morning? Or will it be too

:17:04.:17:13.

wet for that? -- Pirelli tyre. Yes, too wet for that. Hopefully we will

:17:14.:17:20.

catch up with you later. Thank you for that. One of the Friday and

:17:21.:17:26.

develop and drivers for Formula One here and one of several. We have

:17:27.:17:42.

Rodolfo Gonzalez for Marussia and another driver for Toro Rosso. But

:17:43.:17:46.

talking of Friday drivers, we have been joined by Alexander Rossi, who

:17:47.:17:52.

did the Friday morning session for Caterham. That looked like a great

:17:53.:17:55.

opportunity and must have been fabulous to drive in front of your

:17:56.:18:02.

home crowd? Yes. Obviously quite special to be able to drive it home.

:18:03.:18:09.

The last time I had driven a Formula One car was in the States so to

:18:10.:18:13.

comeback was very special to me and something I will remember for a long

:18:14.:18:19.

time. A great opportunity. Different crash helmet for Felipe Massa,

:18:20.:18:23.

celebrating his last Grand Prix with Ferrari. A very significant time for

:18:24.:18:28.

Felipe Massa. He has done this remarkable career, really, with that

:18:29.:18:32.

team from 2006 right through to now. And he has gone very well here in

:18:33.:18:38.

Brazil. He said yesterday one of his finest ever moments was his first

:18:39.:18:42.

victory here in Brazil in 2006. He went on to win it again in 2008, of

:18:43.:18:47.

course, and that was the one where he won the race and thought he was

:18:48.:18:51.

world champion for a few seconds but then Lewis Hamilton did just enough

:18:52.:18:54.

on the last lap to snatch the title away from Massa. It is where his

:18:55.:19:00.

racing career began and he comes from this city, so both Webber and

:19:01.:19:06.

Massa, many thoughts going through their heads this weekend. They are

:19:07.:19:10.

at the other end of their careers from where you are, Alex. You are

:19:11.:19:14.

still trying to break through the door, but, let's not forget, Massa

:19:15.:19:20.

will be continuing with Williams. Yes. It is quite amazing to look

:19:21.:19:24.

back at their careers and see what they have been able to accomplish.

:19:25.:19:31.

He brings such an excellent attitude to the sport. Gary, what have you

:19:32.:19:37.

got for us? I am just looking at the rate behind the front wheel. It is

:19:38.:19:43.

to measure the airflow around the car. There is also a luminous paint

:19:44.:19:47.

which allows us to see the airflow on the surface of the car, but this

:19:48.:19:51.

measures the airflow away from the surface. It is full of little holes

:19:52.:19:56.

and basically you measure the velocity of the air going through

:19:57.:19:59.

the holes and you can measure the direction of the egg going through

:20:00.:20:05.

the holes. These are tiny. Only about no .2 to the millimetre, and

:20:06.:20:09.

if they get locked with a drop of water, it changes everything. -- 0.2

:20:10.:20:16.

millimetres. But they have got the kit on the car and what we are

:20:17.:20:20.

looking at is making sure the kit works for when they do get some dry

:20:21.:20:27.

weather to put on the tyre. Is that significant because they are hoping

:20:28.:20:31.

to run the prototype tyre and get the characteristics of it? Yes,

:20:32.:20:36.

because you want to compare everything. It is a fairly elaborate

:20:37.:20:40.

piece of kit and what they do is a run with the current tyre on the

:20:41.:20:43.

card and then another run with the new tyre on the car at some point in

:20:44.:20:47.

time. Hopefully we will get something today. Then they can

:20:48.:20:51.

analyse how the tyre has changed that airflow. But it is not just

:20:52.:20:56.

about going down a straight line. You have to go around corners,

:20:57.:21:00.

around hairpins, and this is an ideal track. There are a lot of

:21:01.:21:05.

slow, high steering corners, but you need to do it back to back with

:21:06.:21:09.

those two dry weather tyres. Everybody has been out for an

:21:10.:21:14.

installation lap and come straight back in after the cars have been

:21:15.:21:18.

rebuilt from the preceding Grand Prix and that is Felipe Massa's are

:21:19.:21:22.

just being brought in. We were just watching Mark Webber in the pits. We

:21:23.:21:28.

caught up with him yesterday in the discussions drivers or would have

:21:29.:21:30.

with the media on a Thursday. He talked to was a bit about the

:21:31.:21:35.

satisfaction he has had from his career in Formula One.

:21:36.:21:41.

If you look at the whole career, the longevity is something I am

:21:42.:21:47.

obviously proud of. Beasley some big victories along the way, which were

:21:48.:21:51.

good. You always want more and that is human nature. Would you trade in

:21:52.:21:55.

some wins for a championship? Of course. But you are measured on what

:21:56.:21:59.

you had and it at the time and I've believe... I have done what I can

:22:00.:22:06.

do. And with where I come from and how I approached it. And then just a

:22:07.:22:12.

lot of it was sheer determination and hard work and obviously a bit of

:22:13.:22:15.

talent thrown in there may be. But a good career and I'm proud of it.

:22:16.:22:20.

When you arrive here, you obviously arrive bright eyed and bushy tailed.

:22:21.:22:24.

You have your goal, your dream, everything you think of every day.

:22:25.:22:29.

I'd think about every day any more. That is natural and that happens. --

:22:30.:22:33.

I do not think. Obviously you see some politics and you think, OK,

:22:34.:22:39.

that is surprise in, that is different. And the more exposure you

:22:40.:22:43.

get as you go up the grid and the more successful, I suppose, the

:22:44.:22:48.

teams are that you drive for, you accept that. And you keep performing

:22:49.:22:53.

and doing your thing and go with it. That was Mark Webber speaking

:22:54.:22:58.

yesterday. The elder statesman of Formula One. 37 years old and

:22:59.:23:02.

retiring after this race. His team-mate, Sebastian Vettel, is

:23:03.:23:07.

moving into the pit lane. And there are some slightly different

:23:08.:23:11.

dynamics going on on the back of that car? Yes. The rear of the car

:23:12.:23:17.

is just as important because you have to understand what is happening

:23:18.:23:22.

behind the car because that is what is making the whole car work. This

:23:23.:23:27.

elaborate piece of kit, again, doing the same job, measuring that airflow

:23:28.:23:31.

coming out of the diffuser and around the outside of the rear tyre,

:23:32.:23:35.

and the more of this data you can get, the more you can develop the

:23:36.:23:39.

car. And obviously for next year, lots of changes in lots of areas.

:23:40.:23:43.

Exhaust pipes, for example, cannot come out of the same area of the

:23:44.:23:47.

car. So this is the sort of preparation that makes red all the

:23:48.:23:53.

team it is. Yes, they have won the championships. Sebastian Vettel

:23:54.:23:55.

still wants to win this race and get that new record but at the moment,

:23:56.:23:58.

everything today is based on getting knowledge for next year. Sebastian

:23:59.:24:03.

Vettel with yet another new crash helmet design. This one celebrating

:24:04.:24:07.

the return of the Austrian Grand Prix next year. So, some various

:24:08.:24:11.

scenes of Austria on his crash helmet! It is a reintroduction, if

:24:12.:24:18.

you like. We also have a new crack on the calendar in Russia. Plenty to

:24:19.:24:25.

look forward to. And Felipe Massa, yes, the last time we will see him

:24:26.:24:30.

like this but slightly different overalls for Felipe as he gets ready

:24:31.:24:33.

for this last event for the great team. And before switching to

:24:34.:24:36.

Williams, which will be very interesting to see how he gets on

:24:37.:24:42.

there. The line-up, Bottas himself putting in that great performance at

:24:43.:24:45.

the USA Grand Prix, scoring points for the first time and Williams has

:24:46.:24:49.

struggled for pace, no doubt about it, in the season. A close-up

:24:50.:24:55.

there. 11 wins, 15 pole positions that he has all had with Ferrari.

:24:56.:25:02.

Yeah! I wonder if he will become a fashion model after this! A very

:25:03.:25:06.

relaxed atmosphere down in the Ferrari pit, isn't it? It is nice to

:25:07.:25:11.

see that. Massa has this nice record that he has had 11 wins, 12 second

:25:12.:25:17.

places and 13 thirds. All very neat and tidy in terms of his podium

:25:18.:25:21.

finishes over the years. I wonder if there is any chance of him getting

:25:22.:25:24.

another one here to finish in Brazil. Di Resta will be sitting

:25:25.:25:34.

this one out waiting to see what happens and James will be getting

:25:35.:25:37.

another run. He has had several practices already this year. There

:25:38.:25:45.

is Paul Di Resta, just watching from the sidelines at the moment. When

:25:46.:25:48.

you're doing the Friday practice session, how much technical stuff

:25:49.:25:53.

for the team is there that you have to do? That was one of the

:25:54.:25:57.

Israelis, I think, Rosberg running a bit wide. -- one of the Mercedes.

:25:58.:26:11.

You come to the weekend having an idea of what the car is going to do

:26:12.:26:14.

and the conditions are going to be like but you have no idea till you

:26:15.:26:19.

get out onto the track, so you do a lot of correlation... Let's just see

:26:20.:26:25.

what Rosberg is doing here. Then you can tell me. Just went in a bit

:26:26.:26:31.

quick. Yeah. Busy trying to find the brake in turn number one. A big, big

:26:32.:26:39.

area of one up on the outside and a circuit that has evolved over the

:26:40.:26:42.

years. It was first used in its revised form in the early 90s. The

:26:43.:26:47.

original track dates way back, almost to the Second World War time,

:26:48.:26:51.

actually, when it was built, but it wasn't used until the early 70s but

:26:52.:26:55.

it was in a slightly different format. It was swept around the

:26:56.:27:00.

outside and had some dauntingly fast corners, but this section, for

:27:01.:27:04.

example, was or was part of that track so it is nice the track has

:27:05.:27:08.

retained part of its original nature. And that's what the most

:27:09.:27:17.

important corner? -- and that was? Yeah. You often forget about Sao

:27:18.:27:24.

Paulo a cause that is the last race in the -- because it is the last

:27:25.:27:35.

race in the calendar. You have some drivers who are winning to push the

:27:36.:27:38.

boundaries but it is also amazing how short the lap is. It is amazing

:27:39.:27:44.

how quickly you can get around them. In the wet at the moment we are

:27:45.:27:57.

doing 125. Daniel Ricciardo is not in the practice, so he can talk to

:27:58.:28:04.

Tom Clarkson. We are not here to talk about cricket. Cannot make that

:28:05.:28:11.

clear? Whatever you say! How frustrating is it not being in the

:28:12.:28:17.

car? Yeah, I didn't realise how frustrating it is. I'd thought it

:28:18.:28:20.

would be quite nice to have the morning off but I'm already very

:28:21.:28:23.

bored! So I would definitely prefer to be out in the car! What can you

:28:24.:28:30.

tell us about this man? He seemed to do good job last weekend? His raw

:28:31.:28:36.

speed is very good. I'd think he has showed that over the last few years.

:28:37.:28:40.

And he is just maturing pretty much every week, so that is still on his

:28:41.:28:46.

side but he has deftly got the speed. Last week he put out on a new

:28:47.:28:51.

trap and performed ready well, so pretty excited to see how he goes

:28:52.:28:56.

next year. Your last year at Toro Rosso. How do you sum up how it has

:28:57.:29:03.

gone? It is fair to say it has been a bit up and down. We would have

:29:04.:29:07.

liked a bit more overall consistency, and when I'd say that,

:29:08.:29:14.

I mean point-scoring, I guess. I have definitely grown with a lot of

:29:15.:29:19.

the people around me. So it is always nice to be at the end of the

:29:20.:29:23.

season. It is a bit of a relief to have a bit of a break now. I'm a

:29:24.:29:26.

little bit sad as well. Obviously very excited for Red Bull. But sad

:29:27.:29:31.

for a few of the guys who are leaving. The next Grand Prix you go

:29:32.:29:36.

to will be your home race and you will be at Red Bull Racing. Does

:29:37.:29:41.

that fill you with horror? Horror?! Pretty much the opposite of that. I

:29:42.:29:46.

am sure there are going to be lots of eyes on me and all the rest of

:29:47.:29:51.

it. But I am just going to go out there and have fun. Hopefully take

:29:52.:30:00.

it to the front lines. We have just seen the Liz Hamilton spin out on

:30:01.:30:06.

track. How difficult is it in these wet conditions? -- Lewis Hamilton?

:30:07.:30:10.

Last year was one of the most difficult Grand Prix is ever because

:30:11.:30:15.

the changes can be hard. But it is fun at the same time. Now there is

:30:16.:30:20.

not that much standing water. I think for the intermediate, it is

:30:21.:30:24.

quite slippery conditions. So, yeah. We will see how we go this

:30:25.:30:30.

afternoon. The final question, are you confident you can get points

:30:31.:30:35.

this weekend? Iowa's try to be confident. The reality is, we

:30:36.:30:41.

haven't had a very fast race the last few races. -- by always. Maybe

:30:42.:30:45.

these conditions can always give us a bit of hope but in any case I'm

:30:46.:30:50.

going to try to drive drive it as hard as I can. Good luck with that

:30:51.:30:56.

and have a great last race for the team. so, we have seen Lewis

:30:57.:31:08.

Hamilton have his half spin. It was a very graceful half spin, wasn't

:31:09.:31:20.

it? We saw Rosberg going wide earlier. I think we are set up to

:31:21.:31:28.

have an interesting weekend. We are watching Esteban Gutierrez in the

:31:29.:31:32.

Sauber. Tony, they took a real jump in form around Japan time. Let's

:31:33.:31:37.

look at what Perez is doing. He looks like he made a mistake. He did

:31:38.:31:44.

some cadence braking but he got onto the run-off. He was able to use that

:31:45.:31:52.

quite effectively. Gutierrez had good performances around the

:31:53.:31:56.

Japanese Grand Prix but blotted his copybook little bit in the USA? Yes,

:31:57.:32:05.

little bit. He had a baptism is on fire. The rear end did not work. On

:32:06.:32:11.

top of that, he was against Hulkenberg in a tightly packed

:32:12.:32:17.

midfield. He found himself out in Q1 quite often. That was tough for him.

:32:18.:32:22.

But he has grown in confidence since they got the car right. He had a

:32:23.:32:26.

decent chassis underneath him. He had a great drive in Suzuka where

:32:27.:32:32.

they scored points. Hopefully, he will go from strength to strength.

:32:33.:32:37.

There are more drivers than there are seats. That is right. This

:32:38.:32:44.

driver is secure for next year, he is in at Toro Rossos next season.

:32:45.:32:49.

Alexander, this will be his first opportunity to drive a Formula One

:32:50.:32:55.

car in the wet. Actually, he is in a similar situation. The first time I

:32:56.:33:02.

drove one was in practice in Montreal. I had never driven on an

:33:03.:33:07.

intermediate or a wet tyre before. The one thing that is going through

:33:08.:33:11.

your mind is this is not your race car. You do not want to do anything

:33:12.:33:15.

which will hurt the team's progress on the weekend and you do not want

:33:16.:33:18.

to do anything to make the other driver cross with you. I've found by

:33:19.:33:25.

self driving at 80, 85%, just doing the laps and doing the correlation

:33:26.:33:30.

work for the team. At the end of the day, in situations like this, you do

:33:31.:33:35.

not go for a lap time, you just tried to do the conservative option

:33:36.:33:40.

and that is the best thing. It is probably not the time to play the

:33:41.:33:44.

hero. Having said that, he has done a representative time. Let's listen.

:33:45.:33:55.

Really struggling to get the tyres working now. We have deceived the

:33:56.:34:03.

circuit is getting wetter. It is a common refrain from Jenson Button

:34:04.:34:09.

trying to get heat in the tyres. He is one of the most sensitive drivers

:34:10.:34:13.

out there and he does struggle to get heat in the tyres. But if he

:34:14.:34:19.

does get them switched on, particularly in mixed conditions, he

:34:20.:34:24.

is dynamite. He was race when here last year in wet conditions. Quite a

:34:25.:34:29.

lot of cars on track. Normally we get a quieter period where they are

:34:30.:34:33.

all sitting in the pit lane but it is not happening this time. We get

:34:34.:34:37.

to see a lot of action on circuit. Jean-Eric Vergne who set out the

:34:38.:34:41.

Austin practice gets to do the session this morning. Jean-Eric

:34:42.:34:47.

Vergne has not scored any points since the Canadian Grand Prix. That

:34:48.:34:53.

was a long time ago. The race that you did seems a long time ago. He

:34:54.:34:57.

has not been able to score points since then. Daniel Ricciardo has

:34:58.:35:02.

been more consistent on points. In qualifying he has had the edge over

:35:03.:35:06.

Jean-Eric Vergne. Nico Hulkenberg has had a good second half to the

:35:07.:35:11.

season. Difficult with the Sauber. It did not come together with them

:35:12.:35:16.

at the beginning of the year. The changes they have made have really

:35:17.:35:20.

worked. Hulkenberg love this place. He had pole position in 2010 and he

:35:21.:35:27.

led 30 laps here last year. He is very strong here. Interesting

:35:28.:35:30.

talking about Hulkenberg. There was a rumour went Kimi stopped for the

:35:31.:35:36.

last two races that he might drive a Lotus for the last two races.

:35:37.:35:40.

Contractual issues aside, I thought to myself, go and try and put your

:35:41.:35:49.

six frame in a guy which has been driven -- in a car which has been

:35:50.:35:54.

driven by a shorter guy all year. Even if the entity 's head that he

:35:55.:35:58.

has decided that Sauber is the place to be, because it is a good car

:35:59.:36:04.

now... Guess, it has been consecutively good. He goes fifth

:36:05.:36:11.

fastest at the moment. Just a quick reminder on Kimi Raikkonen, it is

:36:12.:36:15.

hey Keiko the line in who gets his second go at locus this weekend. It

:36:16.:36:21.

turns out to be debris in the break dust which caused him to come into

:36:22.:36:25.

the pits at Austin. They had to remove the debris and change the

:36:26.:36:34.

front section of the win but overall the team are happy -- change the

:36:35.:36:39.

front section of the wing. I think he did a decent job. Earlier in the

:36:40.:36:46.

season a rip-off strip got into a duct with Kimi and lead to

:36:47.:36:50.

overheating brakes. Alexander Rossi is with us. He is from Caterham.

:36:51.:37:06.

There is a bit of traffic around with Hamilton trying to get past

:37:07.:37:13.

Giedo van der Garde. Tell me about the atmosphere in the team this

:37:14.:37:20.

weekend. This is our final shot, if you will to be gained ten. We were

:37:21.:37:29.

in this position last year . We have had the edge this year but they were

:37:30.:37:36.

able to sneak in the results. We have been struggling to get 13th

:37:37.:37:41.

position. This race, as we have seen, and over the past four or five

:37:42.:37:44.

years, it is where everything happens. As much as there is tension

:37:45.:37:50.

and hope that goes along with getting that 13th position that we

:37:51.:37:55.

need to get back to 10th in the constructors, there is also a bit of

:37:56.:38:01.

excitement. We have shown that we can make the right decisions and it

:38:02.:38:06.

is about being there at the end to fight. This is the rival team,

:38:07.:38:14.

Rudolf O Gonzales who is the Friday driver for Marussia. I remember

:38:15.:38:19.

talking about this situation. He said when they had Timo Glock in the

:38:20.:38:29.

car who was buried good in the wet, he said they spent all season

:38:30.:38:37.

praying for rain and did not get it. Gary, if you were running either

:38:38.:38:45.

Caterham on Marussia this weekend, how would you approach this weekend.

:38:46.:38:50.

Would you approach it differently to a normal race weekend? The first

:38:51.:38:54.

thing I would not do is have a third driver in the car on Friday. I can

:38:55.:39:01.

only assume they are doing that because they are getting paid to do

:39:02.:39:04.

it. That will compromise his positions the shore. You can only do

:39:05.:39:11.

that best thing possible but you hope they would focus better on the

:39:12.:39:17.

race. The difference between 20th or 21st does not really matter. You

:39:18.:39:23.

need to make sure you are in as good shape as possible. Then the drivers

:39:24.:39:28.

need to keep their car on the road so they need to get confidence on

:39:29.:39:32.

this circuit. If you do all of that right then you cannot do any more.

:39:33.:39:38.

They are in 10th position. It is up to cater to catch them. What

:39:39.:39:42.

Marussia do not want to do is make it easy for them. -- cater room.

:39:43.:39:52.

They do need a lot of retirements. Pat Fry watching from the Ferrari

:39:53.:40:02.

pit wall. We watch the leap to Massa continue round in a Ferrari. He will

:40:03.:40:06.

no doubt have the support of the crowd here this weekend as he comes

:40:07.:40:09.

to the end of his career with the team. At the moment it is bass boat

:40:10.:40:14.

faster from Hamilton. The Mercedes seemed to be running very well. --

:40:15.:40:24.

Rosberg. I was wondering if we would have the 180 degree panning camera

:40:25.:40:35.

and it is back on Felipe Massa's R. -- Felipe Massa's car. Huge ocean

:40:36.:40:41.

for Felipe Massa this weekend. It is his final ride for Ferrari. Earlier,

:40:42.:40:46.

he spoke to Tom about some of his emotions this weekend. It will be

:40:47.:40:52.

very emotional for the moment. Very happy to be here for the last race

:40:53.:40:58.

with Ferrari, after a long time together with Ferrari. Really

:40:59.:41:01.

looking forward to this event and trying to do the best we can on this

:41:02.:41:08.

track. We will have even more emotion at the end. I am really

:41:09.:41:12.

looking forward and try to do the best I can for this last race. To

:41:13.:41:19.

finish this fantastic moment together with Ferrari which is an

:41:20.:41:27.

incredible team which will always be part of my heart. Are you ready to

:41:28.:41:34.

move on to a new team? Yes, always happy and I will be refreshed for

:41:35.:41:37.

the future and looking forward to that. Felipe Massa speaking

:41:38.:41:43.

yesterday. He is looking ahead to a new career at Williams. We are

:41:44.:41:48.

watching Heikki Kovalainen in the Lotus. You have worked with him a

:41:49.:41:52.

lot, Alexander will stop both of you have done Friday practice sessions

:41:53.:41:59.

with Caterham. Did you get a chance to catch up with him after Austin?

:42:00.:42:07.

Briefly I spoke to Catherine, his other half. She said he was so

:42:08.:42:12.

pleased to see a target lap time of the front guys and try and compete

:42:13.:42:19.

with them. We all know that he is talented. He is a race winner. He

:42:20.:42:25.

definitely deserves to be towards the front of the grid. That is a

:42:26.:42:29.

great opportunity for him. Personally, I think he did a good

:42:30.:42:34.

job. You look at what he did in qualifying and everything, he was

:42:35.:42:37.

quite impressive seeing as he had never seen the car before. It will

:42:38.:42:41.

be interesting to see if he keeps the continuity this weekend. From a

:42:42.:42:47.

team boss's view, what would you want to see from Heikki Kovalainen

:42:48.:42:52.

this weekend in his second outing followed his? It is difficult.

:42:53.:42:57.

Obviously, they want to get points in the constructors' championship.

:42:58.:43:02.

He did everything right up to the race will start you just have to go

:43:03.:43:05.

with it and try and make sure that you end up getting the best out of

:43:06.:43:10.

it you can. I think pressure to be on the rostrum sometimes is too

:43:11.:43:14.

high. Just do the best job you can do. If that gets you on the podium,

:43:15.:43:19.

then fine. Just going back to Jenson Button when he talked about lost

:43:20.:43:24.

temperature from the tyres, it is there easy to do. You lose the

:43:25.:43:31.

temperature in the wet and it is difficult to bring back temperature

:43:32.:43:34.

back again. Much more difficult than it would be in the drive. They have

:43:35.:43:39.

just in changing the mechanical setup of the car. They have changed

:43:40.:43:43.

the front torsion bar and the ride height. You can see the mechanics is

:43:44.:43:52.

putting a bit of tape on that. That is the pull rod which operates the

:43:53.:43:56.

suspension. If you let that it will have a lower ride height and if you

:43:57.:44:00.

sure to let the car will ride up from the ground little bit. They

:44:01.:44:03.

have also been doing work on the rear of the car. When Jenson came in

:44:04.:44:07.

I had a look at the front tyres and they have been working quite well.

:44:08.:44:12.

He is still third fastest. The tyres have to work but the problems are

:44:13.:44:16.

when he went further, lost the temperature and then could not get

:44:17.:44:20.

back into it. You're talking about in wet conditions, tyre temperature

:44:21.:44:24.

is still ultra important. The temperature on the track will be

:44:25.:44:30.

around 50 to 55 Celsius. If you are down at 30 you have no grip

:44:31.:44:35.

whatsoever. It is like driving on ice. One of Jenson's problems is to

:44:36.:44:40.

keep the tyre temperature up. The track temperature at the moment is

:44:41.:44:44.

20 degrees, the temperature is just 19. We were in the 30s yesterday. It

:44:45.:44:48.

was a warned day at Interlagos yesterday that it is much cooler.

:44:49.:44:53.

Mercedes is looking good at the moment in the wet with Jenson Button

:44:54.:44:57.

and Sergio Perez third and fourth. We were talking about him earlier.

:44:58.:45:22.

Looking at those times there, as we are just riding with Fernando

:45:23.:45:26.

Alonso, taking it fairly steady at the moment, looking in his mirrors a

:45:27.:45:30.

bit, just having a look around to see whether he is going to get a bit

:45:31.:45:34.

of clear space at this stage. Very gentle from Fernando at the moment.

:45:35.:45:39.

But looking at those times, K2 in these conditions certainly seem to

:45:40.:45:46.

have the edge over Marussia. Is this the early days but in the wet, the

:45:47.:45:52.

downforce is going to play a big role. It is going to give you that

:45:53.:45:55.

bit of grip. That is something that we do have by quite a bit over

:45:56.:46:04.

Marussia where they -- but where they might have something over us is

:46:05.:46:13.

on the sides. Let's just watched... Fantastic! A wheel spin, a bit of

:46:14.:46:31.

sideways through the Curva Do Sol and then it was lovely to see that

:46:32.:46:43.

bit of corrective driving. There is no arguing that in any conditions

:46:44.:46:52.

you put, he is going to be able to extract the most out of the car. He

:46:53.:46:59.

has never won here but he has won the championship on two occasions at

:47:00.:47:03.

this truck, so it is not as if it has been a bad circuit for him by

:47:04.:47:08.

any means. -- track. But when he has been fighting for championships, he

:47:09.:47:11.

is very conscious of what he needs that day and it was not necessarily

:47:12.:47:15.

a victory. That would have been an amazing end to the season. If there

:47:16.:47:19.

is a bit of a damp track, they might be a chance for Ferrari to come back

:47:20.:47:26.

a bit but they simply have not had a car that has been fast enough to

:47:27.:47:29.

consistently challenge red ball through the course of the season.

:47:30.:47:31.

And it has not even been the second fastest car. You have Mercedes and

:47:32.:47:35.

you could argue the Lotus has been a bit quicker. Looking at your

:47:36.:47:40.

figures, Gary, the Lotus has been a faster car, so he has done pretty

:47:41.:47:44.

well to wrap up second in the championship. Yes. He always gets

:47:45.:47:49.

everything that is on the table and I think they have a pretty good

:47:50.:47:53.

start. He had two wins the first five races but over a season, if you

:47:54.:47:57.

look at the way Lotus has used the tyres, probably a better race car.

:47:58.:48:03.

So, Gary, where did it all go wrong for Ferrari because they couldn't

:48:04.:48:09.

seem to get it right in the latter part after their two wins early in

:48:10.:48:13.

the year? At the beginning of the season, the car was quick but the

:48:14.:48:19.

stuff they brought to the car didn't make it go faster. They have been

:48:20.:48:25.

trying the same stuff every weekend so they weren't getting those

:48:26.:48:28.

developments and big steps, the development stages. They weren't

:48:29.:48:34.

finding those two or three tenths of a second. And that gets very

:48:35.:48:38.

confusing. It gets confusing for the guys back at the factory trying to,

:48:39.:48:43.

you know, set a developing direction if you are getting to the track and

:48:44.:48:49.

things don't work. So at the end of the season, there was a lot of head

:48:50.:48:56.

scratching. James will be able to give them that bit of momentum, to

:48:57.:49:00.

be honest, because sometimes you need to believe in yourself. You

:49:01.:49:03.

cannot disbelieve that these things should work. I'd think Ferrari just

:49:04.:49:07.

played around a bit too much this year. It certainly has gone from

:49:08.:49:13.

this point of view. They have the chance of possibly second in the

:49:14.:49:17.

championship but Mercedes do seem to have an edge over those 15 points.

:49:18.:49:22.

Watching Sutil, who is always something of a master in these

:49:23.:49:27.

conditions. It doesn't change anything. He is 12. And a bit of

:49:28.:49:33.

luck for the Russian driver in the Toro Rosso. I should imagine the

:49:34.:49:39.

team might be saying, let's keep that car in one peace. They don't

:49:40.:49:43.

want him to risk it. At, nevertheless, that is impressive. He

:49:44.:49:51.

is definitely showing what he is capable of and I think every time

:49:52.:49:55.

you get any opportunity to drive in that car, you are kind of under a

:49:56.:50:00.

spotlight and you need to show you are able to do it. As long as the

:50:01.:50:04.

rest of the 15 minute session goes well for him. He has to keep it on

:50:05.:50:14.

the island. Just explain to us of the slightly different racing lines

:50:15.:50:17.

in the wet, because you can certainly see he is doing that. The

:50:18.:50:31.

racing line is when you put -- try to keep as much speed as you can but

:50:32.:50:34.

in the wet it doesn't mix with the racing line very well because a lot

:50:35.:50:40.

of the rubber and oil on the track gets under way. So you try to find a

:50:41.:50:44.

way around the racing line, which might sound a bit counterintuitive,

:50:45.:50:53.

but where the last bit of rubber is is where the opportunity is. You try

:50:54.:50:58.

and stay away from where you would normally run and stay away from the

:50:59.:51:03.

curves and try to find grip. And in as many places as you can. This is

:51:04.:51:10.

on board with Grosjean. He is in a twisty section. A bit sideways, a

:51:11.:51:14.

bit sideways, and then he got it back. He broke online and try to

:51:15.:51:21.

turn in online and then the wheel wouldn't take. It then took him to

:51:22.:51:26.

wear the abrasiveness is and then the car hooked up again. So as the

:51:27.:51:33.

track dries, that can work. But you see it in very wet conditions and

:51:34.:51:38.

you kind of follow the white line on the outside of the track and that is

:51:39.:51:43.

where the most grip is. Sometimes the difficulty can be in the

:51:44.:51:46.

crossover. You are using these wide lines. And with Bottas here, using a

:51:47.:51:53.

wide line in places. How do you determine when to get back on the

:51:54.:51:57.

racing line? That can be tricky. You have to cross it at some point and

:51:58.:52:01.

you have to make sure that when you do, the wheel is as straight as

:52:02.:52:08.

possible. If you try to put lateral and longitudinal load in in these

:52:09.:52:12.

conditions and ask too much, you are just going to have a slide. It is

:52:13.:52:16.

normally easy to correct from but the more you slide, you are just

:52:17.:52:21.

losing momentum. This is a tricky section in the wet because it is

:52:22.:52:25.

flat-out easy in the dry but we have seen some big accidents up there in

:52:26.:52:32.

the past. And in fact, we had a crash this time last year going up

:52:33.:52:37.

that hill. Yeah. And you don't think about those normally so when you get

:52:38.:52:40.

to them in the wet, you don't think about them. Vettel is out on six.

:52:41.:52:48.

Mac that was well spotted! That is a bit of a surprise. Having a good

:52:49.:52:51.

look around, seeing what the grip level is, and he has got the error

:52:52.:52:57.

rate on the back of the car, so a bit of interesting... Seems way too

:52:58.:53:02.

early for that. It does. Airy, I don't know if you have had a chance

:53:03.:53:07.

to catch up with any of the prototype tyres for Pirelli. --

:53:08.:53:15.

Gary. What other markings? I spoke to Paul yesterday about it and it is

:53:16.:53:21.

a stage of development. It is a slightly different construction and

:53:22.:53:25.

different detail of how the tread goes on to the tyre. And, as I'd

:53:26.:53:30.

say, I think Sebastian Vettel was a bit early. He has gone into the

:53:31.:53:34.

pits. I don't think he is trying to do a lap time on it because it is

:53:35.:53:39.

starting to rain quite heavily. He has that error rate on the back, so

:53:40.:53:46.

rather than knocking, go out and do something and run with a set of the

:53:47.:53:49.

current tyres and then the development tyres and find out the

:53:50.:53:53.

differences. So just having a look to see. But I wouldn't be surprised

:53:54.:53:57.

if I saw him sliding because it is very slippery. Hamilton just want to

:53:58.:54:04.

work out what it is like out on the slips. Jenson Button made a good

:54:05.:54:07.

tyre strategy here by staying on the slicks longer. Longer than other

:54:08.:54:12.

people as well, and it was part of the reason he came through to win.

:54:13.:54:16.

We just saw Hamilton a moment ago. He had an incident with Hulkenberg.

:54:17.:54:21.

But a good strategy from Button and Hulkenberg to stay on the slicks for

:54:22.:54:27.

longer. Do you think Sebastian Vettel is just doing a bit of

:54:28.:54:31.

research into that whole thing? To be honest, I don't see how that

:54:32.:54:35.

could benefit them. They have been here last year and they know what it

:54:36.:54:39.

is like. The team has all the data from that. What they can learn from

:54:40.:54:44.

this is a bit strange. The only thing is, Gary was saying how the

:54:45.:54:48.

development tyre, how the egg goes over it compare to the current tyre,

:54:49.:54:57.

-- the air. But to be honest, I don't know what they are trying to

:54:58.:55:05.

do. Tom, you are down at Mercedes. I am. Nico Rosberg went out earlier in

:55:06.:55:11.

the session, did two quick lets, -- lapse, came back and they have not

:55:12.:55:17.

touched it. Lewis Hamilton on the other side of the garage. He is out

:55:18.:55:20.

of the car but they have increased the amount of cooling with the front

:55:21.:55:27.

brake ducts, and he is not happy with the balance. Quite noisy! He

:55:28.:55:33.

has complained about some snap oversteer and why he -- while he is

:55:34.:55:41.

out of the car, they have been looking at some worrying blooms in

:55:42.:55:46.

the cockpit, but all quiet and calm on Rosberg's side of the barrage. In

:55:47.:55:51.

other races where he has gone very well, he has all started the weekend

:55:52.:55:56.

well. It is almost as if he needs that Humperdinck 's boost of

:55:57.:55:58.

starting strongly and then he carries that through with him for

:55:59.:56:01.

the rest of the weekend. -- that confidence boost. They will restrict

:56:02.:56:10.

a bit of running here today and get an extra set of intermediates having

:56:11.:56:15.

to use them in this session but, as Michael told us earlier, they will

:56:16.:56:19.

be a bit wary of getting through to many sets of intermediates. This

:56:20.:56:23.

being Brazil, you never know when you are going to need them. He gets

:56:24.:56:29.

his final session of the year here and still very hopeful he will step

:56:30.:56:34.

up to Formula One. I think it is unlikely he will get a race seat

:56:35.:56:37.

next year but he will still have an opportunity to do a further year as

:56:38.:56:41.

a developer and driver and then look at opportunities beyond that.

:56:42.:56:48.

Currently 18th fastest. Just keeping an eye on things, as is Paul Di

:56:49.:56:52.

Resta, looking as though he would much rather be out in the car than

:56:53.:56:55.

standing in the pit, but that is just the way it is this weekend.

:56:56.:57:01.

Currently 18th fastest. Interestingly, neither Mark Webber

:57:02.:57:05.

nor Sebastian Vettel have set a time. We have seen Webber go out on

:57:06.:57:10.

those slicks but he hasn't set a Finnish time or start time on them.

:57:11.:57:15.

And Vettel. So we don't have a lap time from either of them at this

:57:16.:57:20.

point. The top ten, the two Mercedes, then McLaren. Alonso is up

:57:21.:57:23.

to fourth. Grosjean is just outside the top

:57:24.:57:39.

ten, currently on that time. The times are all reasonably similar.

:57:40.:57:45.

Still no confirmation as to where Pastor Maldonado is going to be next

:57:46.:57:51.

year. Tony, still this sort of freeze in the driver market at the

:57:52.:57:56.

moment. It will also put down, most of it, fairly quickly after this

:57:57.:58:00.

race, but we know he is leaving Williams but we don't know for sure

:58:01.:58:05.

where he is going. Yes, it is quite a strange situation. Letters were

:58:06.:58:11.

giving out this message that, you know, we're also talking to Pastor

:58:12.:58:17.

Maldonado, along with Hulkenberg. And you just wondered if Pastor was

:58:18.:58:21.

thinking, well, I am second-best, if you like, in that equation, and I

:58:22.:58:28.

don't really like that. So also talking to Sauber. He will obviously

:58:29.:58:33.

be somewhere but it is a question, I think of the situation with the

:58:34.:58:36.

Lotus financial position and the investment and whether that will

:58:37.:58:40.

happen. Still waiting to hear the Lotus get that investment that they

:58:41.:58:44.

would so desperately like to have to move forward and know exactly where

:58:45.:58:50.

they stand for next year. Interestingly, Vettel has gone out

:58:51.:58:55.

on the medium compound tyre but it is the prototype, so no marking on

:58:56.:59:01.

the side. So they are trying to get Akuila error readings but is that

:59:02.:59:05.

relevant in terms of the conditions? -- get back-to-back. As a driver, it

:59:06.:59:13.

has got to be very difficult. I don't know. I'll bet he is

:59:14.:59:22.

definitely not loving this. RADIO: Straight engage, please. I

:59:23.:59:27.

guess they have the information but this is the time when he would

:59:28.:59:31.

prefer maybe a reserve or development tyre. Because that seems

:59:32.:59:36.

quite stressful and annoying, I think. Gary, do you think they will

:59:37.:59:41.

have been able to learn a bit about airflow? You were saying earlier all

:59:42.:59:45.

those tubes will be blocked up with water anyway? Yes, it is a lost

:59:46.:59:51.

cause trying to do anything now. As far as the tyre pressure is

:59:52.:59:55.

concerned, I'm sure they put it up to the correct pressure but it would

:59:56.:59:59.

be running on the track if it was hot. But trying to make it move on

:00:00.:00:05.

the rim, as such, that is when you want to measure. It doesn't matter

:00:06.:00:08.

what is happening too much coming down the street. It is when you are

:00:09.:00:14.

on the mid-corner when the tyre is distorted, and that is when you want

:00:15.:00:16.

to know what the characteristics are like. But if they are not going to

:00:17.:00:22.

get any running on it, they might as well do something. Thank you for

:00:23.:00:25.

your questions and comments coming through. Just using that hashed --

:00:26.:00:37.

hash tag #bbcf1. Of course, he is setting new records all the time.

:00:38.:00:43.

The worst moments were Vettel being jeered and booed. We did not like to

:00:44.:00:57.

hear that at all. Another saying, my favourite moment of the season has

:00:58.:01:02.

to be Hamilton's win in Hungary. But David saying, the tyre rule

:01:03.:01:07.

destroyed competition. Red Bull have walked it easily since then. Another

:01:08.:01:16.

person said their favourite podium would be first Aussie Grit, that

:01:17.:01:23.

would be Mark Webber. We have a question which has come in from

:01:24.:01:28.

Callum and we can throw this to Alexander, what do we think about

:01:29.:01:35.

Caterham considering Marcus Ericsson next year? Marcus Ericsson has been

:01:36.:01:44.

racing against you in GP to this year. He has been racing in GP to

:01:45.:01:52.

for several years. -- GP two. We understand he is one of several

:01:53.:01:56.

drivers which cater are considering. What are your thoughts? To be

:01:57.:02:04.

honest, the first I heard of that was on BBC news last night. I have

:02:05.:02:14.

no idea. It looks a bit worse to us, people are struggling to go faster.

:02:15.:02:21.

That was equal to the fastest car out there which is Grosjean. Lap

:02:22.:02:27.

times are not as quick as they were earlier because the track conditions

:02:28.:02:32.

are worse than when Hamilton and Rosberg set their pace earlier. He

:02:33.:02:37.

is one of the drivers under consideration. It is clear that

:02:38.:02:42.

Heikki Kovalainen is still being talked to at Caterham. It seems like

:02:43.:02:46.

a big pool of drivers. Hopefully yourself included? The seats are

:02:47.:02:55.

filling up. Hopefully the remaining drivers will go to the few seats

:02:56.:03:00.

which have not been talked about which is the two at Caterham and the

:03:01.:03:07.

one at Marussia. There are semi-factors that go into it. I have

:03:08.:03:17.

no idea. And yourself, you are still up in the air at the moment? Again,

:03:18.:03:22.

the answer is the same as it has been. I don't know. I guess we have

:03:23.:03:28.

to wait and see. The focus is so much onto this weekend. There is a

:03:29.:03:32.

lot of pressure on the team and the management and the engineers to pull

:03:33.:03:35.

something out. We will know more after the weekend. I think the whole

:03:36.:03:40.

paddock is in the same frame of mind. Talking to the senior drivers

:03:41.:03:46.

yesterday, Adrian Sutil was saying even though he had a contract, he

:03:47.:03:50.

added that sometimes in September, it is October and then mid-November.

:03:51.:03:56.

We went to speak to Paul di Resta and he said he has never been so in

:03:57.:04:01.

the dark. It is a regrettable situation for these guys. Very

:04:02.:04:05.

nervous. It is so late. Sergio Perez was put back into the market in

:04:06.:04:09.

mid-November with a lot of money on him. In terms of running a team, for

:04:10.:04:17.

your employees, don't forget the big teams have 500 employees, for your

:04:18.:04:22.

people you need to tell them at some point who is going to be driving for

:04:23.:04:30.

you? In fact, before we go to Gary, let's go to one of those drivers who

:04:31.:04:34.

is in that sit duration and hoping to sign up again former Russia, Max

:04:35.:04:42.

Chilton. Max, not describe your mood right now? It has been an important

:04:43.:04:50.

weekend for us. It would be nice to go and experience the rain. I have

:04:51.:04:54.

never driven here. I think we all know that rain will play the part in

:04:55.:05:00.

the weekend. It was an interesting call from the team not put you in

:05:01.:05:05.

the car. Why was that? You have to support the young drivers. I was in

:05:06.:05:09.

that position last year. I did not get a run in the last race weekend.

:05:10.:05:15.

There are plenty of other people missing the first session here today

:05:16.:05:19.

so I have got to make sure I take as much practice as I can. What are the

:05:20.:05:26.

drivers saying over the radio about the track conditions? They are OK.

:05:27.:05:32.

At least they are consistent. They are struggling with balance but I am

:05:33.:05:37.

sure everyone else's. Just a word on the whole weekend, such a massive

:05:38.:05:43.

weekend for Marussia. Is everybody feeling relaxed? Yes, the way you

:05:44.:05:47.

have to treat it is like a normal race weekend. It has obviously got a

:05:48.:05:53.

bit of added pressure because we are in this position at the same time as

:05:54.:05:58.

last year. We lost with five laps to go. I just pray it will be a dry

:05:59.:06:03.

race on Sunday. Good luck. Thank you. Last it was bitterly Petrov who

:06:04.:06:12.

grabbed the important issue with five laps to go -- bitterly Petrov.

:06:13.:06:21.

-- Vitaly Petrov. You need to give your team something to look at for

:06:22.:06:25.

the following year. Izzy Nibley, from that point of view they need to

:06:26.:06:30.

start announcing drivers? Yes, they do. Next year we are talking about

:06:31.:06:39.

the complication of all this stuff and the electronics which will be

:06:40.:06:43.

around the car. You have to find places to put all that stuff. You

:06:44.:06:49.

need the driver and you practice with all the wiring. Lewis Hamilton

:06:50.:06:53.

was getting out of the car and they were adjusting wiring. These cars

:06:54.:06:57.

are full of wires and they are all packed around the driver and in the

:06:58.:07:00.

cop that area. From a team point of view and a design point of view you

:07:01.:07:05.

need to know the driver pretty soon because if you suddenly get a tall

:07:06.:07:09.

guy you have a big problem if you have allocated boxes where he needs

:07:10.:07:15.

to sit. It is pretty irresponsible for the management of the team not

:07:16.:07:19.

have a big plan. The plan is doing next year as best you can and that

:07:20.:07:22.

means getting the drivers in place as early as possible. Hopefully soon

:07:23.:07:30.

we will begin to know a bit more about some of those teams. Mark

:07:31.:07:35.

Webber is in the pit lane at the moment in his garage waiting to come

:07:36.:07:39.

back out. There is very little activity on circuit at the moment.

:07:40.:07:45.

There are five cars on track and 17 cars in the Garrard being worked on

:07:46.:07:49.

at the moment. It has been quite tricky in terms of conditions.

:07:50.:07:56.

Just crossing the line there is Esteban Gutierrez. Gonzalez is on

:07:57.:08:10.

track as well. It is still pretty slippery out there. The track itself

:08:11.:08:16.

has quite a lot of drainage channels and grooves cut into it. You can

:08:17.:08:19.

pick them up on camera in a few places. That is to help with the

:08:20.:08:24.

drainage. Gary, when we were walking round yesterday, the elevation

:08:25.:08:28.

change means you have areas where is it does rain hard, the water will

:08:29.:08:32.

pour off the hillside, went it? You cannot stop that. There are slots in

:08:33.:08:38.

the track, 50 millimetres apart all round the track, areas for the water

:08:39.:08:44.

to run. Because of the elevation change you will always get a river

:08:45.:08:47.

somewhere going across the track. That is what catches you out. If you

:08:48.:08:52.

can get consistent grip levels all the way through the track it is

:08:53.:08:56.

pretty good. I was talking to Lewis Hamilton early on. We saw Alonso as

:08:57.:09:08.

well and you get caught out and end up on the grass. The other bits of

:09:09.:09:15.

the track have a lot of grass. When you have lots of things buried in

:09:16.:09:18.

the grasslands is muddy, you have to be altered careful.

:09:19.:09:30.

The intermediate tyre will be past its best now. It is fairly quiet on

:09:31.:09:41.

track. Some dry ice on the Red Bull. Some extra cooling, presumably.

:09:42.:09:47.

Sebastian Vettel had a brilliant victory last time out. His eighth

:09:48.:09:52.

consecutive race win. Going for more records this weekend. We caught up

:09:53.:09:56.

with Sebastian yesterday and asked him about his celebrations and

:09:57.:10:03.

looking for more records. It was quite a good night we had on

:10:04.:10:09.

Sunday. Let's leave it there. Monday I was in worse shape than on Sunday.

:10:10.:10:16.

But, yes, obviously it was a great Sunday afternoon and very special.

:10:17.:10:26.

It is not what keeps me going but equally, it means a lot when you

:10:27.:10:29.

start to realise these things. I think generally this year has been

:10:30.:10:33.

incredible in this regard. I'm looking forward to the winter break.

:10:34.:10:39.

You have to calm down and let all the things sink in. Before he goes

:10:40.:10:45.

into the winter break he has the chance to match the record of nine

:10:46.:10:50.

consecutive wins. But that was done over two seasons and he is looking

:10:51.:10:54.

to achieve it in one season. Who knows what will happen this weekend?

:10:55.:11:00.

Tony, it has been a record-breaking season by Sebastian Vettel. Do you

:11:01.:11:05.

see that continuing next year? None of us can tell because of the new

:11:06.:11:10.

rules but Red Bull, at the end of the day, is the top team. It is a

:11:11.:11:16.

good question and I was talking to Christian Horner about that. Ken is

:11:17.:11:22.

Melbourne next year, what are your chances, do you think? And he threw

:11:23.:11:27.

his arms up and said, who knows? He said the chances of finishing

:11:28.:11:30.

Melbourne next year is 50-50 and it probably is for everyone else on the

:11:31.:11:34.

grid. It shows you that reliability is a big factor. Gary, you are at

:11:35.:11:44.

Sauber. Jenson Button could not get tyre temperature. One thing which

:11:45.:11:50.

contributes to that is the brakes. In the wet you cannot break as late.

:11:51.:11:54.

If you look at Nico Hulkenberg's are you can see the front brake duct and

:11:55.:11:59.

that is all tape on it. Normally that would be a whole for the dry

:12:00.:12:03.

but for the wet you have to take it up. The brakes do not work as

:12:04.:12:06.

efficiently few do not get the heat into them. They do not work until

:12:07.:12:10.

about 300 degrees and then they come in with a bang. You want keep the

:12:11.:12:15.

temperature up as much as possible. The temperature helps to warm the

:12:16.:12:18.

tie-up. You're getting better braking in the wet and keeping the

:12:19.:12:24.

front tyre temperature. It is a very important part of treating the cars

:12:25.:12:29.

for the conditions. Gutierrez is doing a number of laps there. He has

:12:30.:12:35.

done 20 laps so far. I think that is the most of everybody. Rosberg did

:12:36.:12:39.

that early on. Barton has done 14 but has not been in the car in a

:12:40.:12:44.

little while. Dashmack Jenson Button. Thank you for your comments

:12:45.:12:49.

using the hashtag #bbcf1. Paul said the best thing about 2013 was

:12:50.:12:53.

Grosjean showing the world what I knew he could do on track. The worst

:12:54.:12:58.

was the ongoing money issues at Lotus. It sounds like Paul is a

:12:59.:13:02.

Lotus fan. It has been an up-and-down season. A couple of

:13:03.:13:07.

questions coming in. There is one I would like to ask you, Alexander,

:13:08.:13:11.

because you have had some experience with the simulator, what will next

:13:12.:13:16.

year's cars be like to drive? It will be very interesting. Until you

:13:17.:13:24.

get the car out on track you do not know. The one thing we are missing

:13:25.:13:29.

is the tyre model. That will be a massive determining factor in the

:13:30.:13:33.

performance of the car and the characteristics of it. Generally,

:13:34.:13:38.

the driving style will be different. We have not had turbo-charged

:13:39.:13:44.

engines for three decades. It will be something that none of the

:13:45.:13:47.

drivers will have had experience of in the past. While the technology

:13:48.:13:52.

was quite good, the turbo lag will not be massive. It still will be

:13:53.:13:56.

that little bit. I think because none of us have driven turbo engines

:13:57.:14:00.

it will be a wake-up call. To explain exactly what it is going to

:14:01.:14:04.

be like is impossible because we do not know what the tyres will be

:14:05.:14:10.

like. I think it will take a bit of adaptation and a slightly different

:14:11.:14:15.

approach in terms of how we work with the power application. That

:14:16.:14:23.

question came from Motorsport pit. I can tell you that we will be doing

:14:24.:14:30.

some coverage on the rules coverage. Do tune in for our coverage across

:14:31.:14:34.

the weekend. Philip is asking what would we pick as our favourite Mark

:14:35.:14:39.

Webber moment of his Formula One career? That is a good question.

:14:40.:14:46.

Tony, does anything spring to mind for you? Yes, for me it is his

:14:47.:14:52.

Monaco 2010 win. It was a fantastic drive. There were a number of safety

:14:53.:14:56.

cars, he controlled the race and he did it from pole position. It is

:14:57.:15:01.

exactly the kind of race a driver likes to win. That is a very good

:15:02.:15:06.

point. For me in some ways, it has always been his performances at

:15:07.:15:10.

Silverstone. He won here last year and in fact, that was his last

:15:11.:15:13.

victory as well. There was the other victory when he said not bad for a

:15:14.:15:18.

number two driver. His relationship for Silverstone has been tremendous.

:15:19.:15:23.

I remember commentating on a 4,003,000 race in the wet. He always

:15:24.:15:29.

loved that circuit -- formula 3000 race. Yes, he is quick and possibly

:15:30.:15:41.

quicker than Vettel. He has been to places like Barcelona, Silverstone,

:15:42.:15:47.

and he is tremendous. A lot of the technique stuff where he doesn't

:15:48.:15:55.

match Sebastian Vettel and then blowing exhausts and that sort of

:15:56.:16:03.

thing. But he loves it. Once this rain has stopped, we don't expect

:16:04.:16:07.

any more rain, so there is a chance it will be improving from now on.

:16:08.:16:15.

That is good to hear! And your thoughts on Williams? Yes. They have

:16:16.:16:21.

rarely had a good drive and got some points, and just to show the sort of

:16:22.:16:25.

combinations that the teams bring, if you look at the front wing on

:16:26.:16:31.

this car, it is a recovery or revival of last year's front wing

:16:32.:16:35.

assembly. That twisted section. That was all last year's car. And they

:16:36.:16:40.

went away from that at the beginning of the year. But if you look at that

:16:41.:16:44.

thick under section, just under the nose, it is trying to get the front

:16:45.:16:49.

downforce to get good airflow to the back of the car. And if we go down

:16:50.:16:55.

to these other noses down here, there is quite a selection of them.

:16:56.:17:00.

The interesting one for me is the one at the top. You can see here

:17:01.:17:03.

there is a difference in how this front wing works. This is the area

:17:04.:17:09.

where it is so critical because it is right at the front of the front

:17:10.:17:15.

tyre. The consistency of downforce to get is quite critical. But you

:17:16.:17:19.

can also see this section of the win, it is also different as well.

:17:20.:17:23.

So a thicker nose profile and the one below has a very thin nose

:17:24.:17:33.

profile. This one has this in here. So a huge combination of different

:17:34.:17:36.

parts all with slightly different characteristics, but still going

:17:37.:17:42.

back to last year's nose and front wing. It is quite interesting, that,

:17:43.:17:47.

because we talked earlier about Ferrari and they are trying to go

:17:48.:17:52.

forward, but for Williams to go forward, they have had to go back a

:17:53.:17:55.

bit. So an interesting combination of bits. Can you show us how much

:17:56.:18:02.

narrower the front wing will be? Well, 75 millimetres, so in old

:18:03.:18:09.

money, that is three inches. It makes it very critical because at

:18:10.:18:13.

the moment, this is as wide as the front tyre. So you can turn this

:18:14.:18:19.

airflow around that centre without any problem. When that wing comes in

:18:20.:18:27.

75 millimetres narrower, it will have a much larger effect,

:18:28.:18:30.

especially when the car has steering lock, because, as I was saying

:18:31.:18:34.

earlier, they go down the straight OK, these racing cars, but when you

:18:35.:18:38.

have the steering lock on, that is when you need the car to have good

:18:39.:18:46.

aerodynamics and balance. Thank you for that. Fascinating stuff. And we

:18:47.:18:50.

are looking at Sebastian Vettel there, as he is presumably going to

:18:51.:18:55.

be coming out on track. He has done five laps out and in. Testing out

:18:56.:18:59.

different things, running the other tyre. Webber has established a lap

:19:00.:19:04.

time in this session but obviously the track not as quick as it was

:19:05.:19:12.

when Rosberg did his lap earlier. His intermediate tyres are quite

:19:13.:19:16.

fresh, of course, because he has already done a run until now, so

:19:17.:19:21.

when Vettel goes out, he has nice fresh intermediates to use. Yes. It

:19:22.:19:28.

makes a big difference. It behaves like a slick in that the

:19:29.:19:33.

intermediate does wear when it gets Twitter and pitcher and starts to

:19:34.:19:37.

wear quite quickly. -- when it gets to a temperature. When you have the

:19:38.:19:43.

full wet, as long as the conditions stay wet, he can use it for the full

:19:44.:19:49.

race if he needs to, but you would expect Mark and Sebastian Vettel to

:19:50.:19:57.

be able to go quite quickly. This may well be Ross Brawn's final Grand

:19:58.:20:02.

Prix as well. We don't know whether he will be around in any role in

:20:03.:20:07.

Formula One. This gets lost in all the other things going on. Tom, what

:20:08.:20:12.

have you got for us? The good news for us is that the rain has pretty

:20:13.:20:16.

much stopped in the pit lane. McLaren are thinking it will dry out

:20:17.:20:30.

because both Jenson's cars have been got ready to get out. Red Bull want

:20:31.:20:35.

to join in. They don't think the track will dry completely because

:20:36.:20:38.

there is only 20 minutes of the session to go, but they think it

:20:39.:20:41.

will be dry enough to get some meaningful data for next season.

:20:42.:20:46.

This is a good shot because it does show that hill through the first

:20:47.:20:51.

corner. Gary and I walked down there yesterday and it is almost like a

:20:52.:20:54.

refresher when you go out there to see how steep it is. You don't often

:20:55.:21:01.

get that kind of impression. It is a massive surprise how much elevation

:21:02.:21:09.

there is here. In 2008, when I was racing, it was quite impressive how

:21:10.:21:17.

steep it is the speed you can carry through one and two. It is why when

:21:18.:21:20.

everybody comes here they are reminded what a great track it is.

:21:21.:21:31.

Amazing how how much -- how much elevation it has. That huge hill up

:21:32.:21:35.

to turn number one, it is characteristic of the circuit, but

:21:36.:21:39.

it also makes it quite interesting. It does. It is corners like this

:21:40.:21:46.

where drivers have to adapt their style a bit, whereas is every -- if

:21:47.:21:56.

every corner is the same... When it is different, you kind of have to

:21:57.:22:00.

adapt it for each corner, which is another thing that separates the

:22:01.:22:08.

drivers and makes the very good ones stand out. We did not get to ask you

:22:09.:22:15.

what your favourite Webber moment was? His first win for a whole. It

:22:16.:22:25.

was quite special. -- for Red Bull. I think he had a drive through and

:22:26.:22:28.

it was all kind of going against him. He was still able to pull it

:22:29.:22:33.

out and then to win a race like that was quite special. I agree. That was

:22:34.:22:39.

astonishing. And his first ever victory as well, Tony? Yes. And if

:22:40.:22:47.

you are talking about moments, what about when he passed Fernando

:22:48.:22:55.

Alonso? Yes. That requires a bit of bravery. It just goes to show you

:22:56.:22:59.

Mark is a great driver. He has been a bit overshadowed by Sebastien.

:23:00.:23:08.

Sarah Baxter has said, she agrees with you, Germany 2009 will be my

:23:09.:23:14.

favourite Webber Drive. A first win is always special. Tom, what is your

:23:15.:23:22.

favourite memory? I have lots but I was there in febrile re-2009 when he

:23:23.:23:27.

tested for the first time after his leg raking shunt the previous

:23:28.:23:35.

November. -- February 2009. Back then, it was only ten weeks after

:23:36.:23:39.

the accident and he was still walking on crutches and he made the

:23:40.:23:43.

decision he didn't want to walk across the paddock with crutches

:23:44.:23:46.

because he thought it would look too stupid. So just to watch him

:23:47.:23:50.

hobbling from the motorhome over to the car, climbing and do 82 laps on

:23:51.:23:56.

a leg that was still so freshly broken was very, very special. Think

:23:57.:24:01.

it was the defining moment of his career, that late-breaking shunt.

:24:02.:24:08.

Everybody had been wanting to get a fast car, David Coulthard had

:24:09.:24:11.

retired at the end of the year and thought he was going to be the

:24:12.:24:15.

number one driver and then, bang, you broke that leg. It all changed

:24:16.:24:22.

after that. -- he broke. And that was a cycling accident, not a motor

:24:23.:24:26.

accident, of course. I'd think we will see a bit of a chat with him

:24:27.:24:39.

from you this weekend? -- I. Yes. I actually flew to Melbourne with him

:24:40.:24:43.

in 2002 when he made his debut and went on to finish fifth. Just a huge

:24:44.:24:49.

victory for him. And of course here we are in Melbourne this weekend and

:24:50.:24:52.

we are going to catch up with him on race morning and get his thoughts.

:24:53.:25:02.

So tune in, join us. That will be on Sunday at 3pm, so I hope you can

:25:03.:25:08.

join us for that. Another saying, my favourite Webber moment is him

:25:09.:25:11.

scoring points on his home race at his debut. Just to remind you,

:25:12.:25:20.

Alonso and Webber both drove former Nardi. They both had exactly the

:25:21.:25:23.

same number of Grand Prix is entered in their career. Even those Alonso

:25:24.:25:32.

Mr year. But he started the year earlier and then set out as a test

:25:33.:25:35.

driver for Renault, they have started out with exactly the same

:25:36.:25:39.

number of grant breeze. -- Alonso missed a year. -- same number of

:25:40.:25:53.

Grand Prix. Yes, it gotten started. And he is very satisfied with the

:25:54.:25:57.

career he has had but I am sure he would have loved the championship.

:25:58.:26:02.

It was very close in 09. And then in ten as well. Do you have a special

:26:03.:26:15.

Mark Webber moment, Gary? My thing really is his honesty. All the way

:26:16.:26:21.

through his career. When he won Silverstone at the end of the race,

:26:22.:26:26.

he said, not bad for a number two. And I think you expressed his

:26:27.:26:31.

opinion. That is the honesty of Mark Webber and that is what we will miss

:26:32.:26:37.

most. Yes, certainly from a journalist's point of view I have to

:26:38.:26:41.

agree with that, because if you ever wanted a straight down the middle,

:26:42.:26:45.

no-nonsense quote comic he was your guy. We will miss that. Some more of

:26:46.:26:53.

your comments coming in. Thank you very much. Liam saying, the worst

:26:54.:27:00.

moment for him in 2013 was seeing Paul Di Resta lose third in Bahrain.

:27:01.:27:05.

And the best moment, seeing Kimi win. And the young Russian there you

:27:06.:27:12.

are seeing, who is now driving at Toro Rosso, or, well, doing the

:27:13.:27:19.

practice, we will be hearing from him later in practice session number

:27:20.:27:24.

two. I hope you can join us for that to hear how he got on. That was Nico

:27:25.:27:31.

Rosberg a moment ago having to use a bit more than planned. Yes. That is

:27:32.:27:37.

the unfortunate thing about these tracks. You can make smaller

:27:38.:27:45.

mistakes. -- fortunate thing. But you can get away with them. It keeps

:27:46.:27:57.

things safer. We saw Grosjean go off that corner, Mergulho, last year. It

:27:58.:28:07.

is still a practice session and you do want to kind of be able to find

:28:08.:28:11.

elements so that when you go into qualifying in the all-important

:28:12.:28:14.

race, you kind of know what to expect and what you can get away

:28:15.:28:18.

with. A couple of more comments from you. Dean says, the worst was

:28:19.:28:30.

Malaysia. We all know what that was. Vettel snatching victory. Down the

:28:31.:28:38.

insight into the hairpin. The best thing this season has been the

:28:39.:28:43.

dominance of Vettel and the worst thing is Jenson without a podium. By

:28:44.:28:47.

no lots of you listening big McLaren fans and it has been a tough year

:28:48.:28:54.

for you. -- I know that lots of you. And another says, his favourite

:28:55.:29:02.

moment was Bottas getting points. The worst, Red Bull's procession to

:29:03.:29:09.

the title again, says John. And Jenny says, best moment, Howden's

:29:10.:29:16.

first win with Mercedes. -- Hamilton's first. Hamilton has had

:29:17.:29:25.

one win so far this year. Rosberg also taking victories for the team

:29:26.:29:29.

and it has been a huge jump. But where they were last year, you know,

:29:30.:29:34.

Michael Schumacher, along with the co-Rothberg, that combination,

:29:35.:29:38.

struggling and then suddenly they are qualifying up front all the

:29:39.:29:44.

time. -- Nico Rosberg. But it has been a great season from them.

:29:45.:29:50.

Absolutely. You have to look at it slightly in historical context. We

:29:51.:29:55.

have the double diffuser thing which gave them that fantastic start to

:29:56.:29:59.

the year but then they had to cut the budget. Mercedes then came in

:30:00.:30:03.

and bought it later. But for the next year, they made something like

:30:04.:30:08.

40% staff cuts. And it was takes time to come through. And if you

:30:09.:30:13.

look at the position in the championships, it tends to translate

:30:14.:30:18.

the following year. Last year they had got that going backwards, they

:30:19.:30:25.

were worse in 2011 than 2010, worse in 2012 than 11 end points. They

:30:26.:30:33.

went from a wind tunnel, recruited a lot of personnel. And then, that was

:30:34.:30:39.

all put in place last year and it has come through this year. We have

:30:40.:30:44.

seen the benefits of that and I think one season they were scoring

:30:45.:30:48.

seven points race and this year it has been 19 points race. A massive,

:30:49.:30:55.

massive jump. Harry, you have seen a lot of changes. A bit frustrated

:30:56.:30:58.

that things didn't move on but they do seem to have made that big-league

:30:59.:31:08.

this year? Yes, they have made a big leap. Speaking to some of the guys I

:31:09.:31:13.

know they did not expect them to be quite as competitive. The car is

:31:14.:31:18.

good at lap times but they have a problem with big points in the

:31:19.:31:22.

Championship. They are still lagging behind Red Bull as far as that

:31:23.:31:25.

performance is concerned. They brought out a lot of high-end

:31:26.:31:29.

technical staff. No matter what you are doing in a racing car, egos do

:31:30.:31:34.

come into it. Getting all those people to work together is quite

:31:35.:31:39.

tough. Ross has done a great job of putting it all together. The thought

:31:40.:31:44.

of Ross not being there next year, that is quite sad. They have debt

:31:45.:31:51.

the numbers. We are seeing Sebastian Vettel who has gone fifth fastest in

:31:52.:31:56.

this session. Reasonable lap times, Alexander, being produced. It does

:31:57.:32:02.

look as if track conditions may be better for some improvement in times

:32:03.:32:05.

in the last few minutes. Whether McLaren will get what they want to

:32:06.:32:10.

run a prototype car, I'm not that sure. It shows what a good lap that

:32:11.:32:16.

was from Nick Coad the start of the session. The track was drier than it

:32:17.:32:23.

was then -- Niccolo. I do not know if it is to do with the track

:32:24.:32:27.

entering that stage where it is getting a bit greasy. Even though

:32:28.:32:31.

there is less water on the track you have less grip. Vettel has gone

:32:32.:32:44.

quicker than he had done. He has done one of the biggest improvements

:32:45.:32:52.

we have seen. He goes third fastest. Rosberg and Hamilton still first and

:32:53.:33:01.

second. That is James Colorado. He is 18. I was speaking to him this

:33:02.:33:09.

morning and he said Force India have to be careful because of engine

:33:10.:33:15.

mileage. He was a bit sceptical about whether he would even be able

:33:16.:33:22.

to drive this weekend. I think that was Darren Heath that we had a quick

:33:23.:33:27.

look trough, one of the famous F1 snappers getting more for the

:33:28.:33:32.

collection. We have 12 cars on track at this stage. We have another 90

:33:33.:33:38.

minute session to go later on today. We will see if the track dries up a

:33:39.:33:44.

little bit for that one. Maldonado is 17th quickest. The two Williams

:33:45.:33:54.

cars are similar in terms of place. There is Claire Williams, deputy

:33:55.:33:57.

team principal. And good to see that Sir Frank is here this weekend. What

:33:58.:34:05.

did you think of Valterri Bottas out in Austin? I was hoping that we

:34:06.:34:12.

would get another 2012 situation. It looked in qualifying bit about Terry

:34:13.:34:19.

had the pace. He said after the session that he made a couple of

:34:20.:34:25.

mistakes. For a young driver to see another young driver being able to

:34:26.:34:29.

compete in another car that is not that competitive gives you hope

:34:30.:34:33.

about what you are doing. I think everyone was very happy for him.

:34:34.:34:44.

Gary, where are we with tyre choice? Each driver gets three sets of wet

:34:45.:34:48.

tyres and four sets of intermediates. If you use one of the

:34:49.:34:52.

sets of intermediates on the Friday practice you get a set to place it

:34:53.:34:59.

-- replace it. Nico Rosberg, he had fresh tyres which are much, much

:35:00.:35:05.

better. They have more grip. They cut their way through the water. I

:35:06.:35:09.

think they are slower now because everyone will have stayed on the

:35:10.:35:13.

same set of intermediate tyres and they have lost that edge. The

:35:14.:35:19.

service is very abrasive. I think that is why the Times now now not so

:35:20.:35:25.

representative. That is making sense. Vettel is moving up the order

:35:26.:35:31.

of bit. I do not think anyone else's leaping up the order. Mark Webber is

:35:32.:35:39.

currently six. Daniil Kvyat's time from early on is holding up well.

:35:40.:35:43.

That is a good performance from the Russian. He will go into his first

:35:44.:35:49.

full season in 2014. He is finishing off a sort of apprenticeship this

:35:50.:35:55.

year. A couple more of your comments coming in, the best and worst

:35:56.:35:58.

moments of the 2013 Formula One season. Shannon said the best thing

:35:59.:36:04.

was Sebastian celebrating winning the Championship with the Indian

:36:05.:36:07.

fans with the doughnuts and the worst was being penalised for it. He

:36:08.:36:12.

seems to have learnt a way to do doughnuts and not be penalised for

:36:13.:36:16.

it so he has learned that. There is Maldonado. The part of the track

:36:17.:36:23.

where Vettel was facing the wrong way. Gutierrez ran off the track.

:36:24.:36:35.

Then he sorted it all out. That looked like a different incident. I

:36:36.:36:40.

think it was the same one. Definitely a bit of a moment there.

:36:41.:36:47.

A couple more of your best and worst moments. Daniel said the best one

:36:48.:36:53.

had to be Fernando's two wins in China and Spain. That did not go

:36:54.:36:59.

quite right. That was a good carting technique. He was struggling a

:37:00.:37:11.

little bit on that lap. Mark Webber comes across the line. Tom, you have

:37:12.:37:24.

got a comment about McLaren. Yes. They have been watching the lap

:37:25.:37:29.

times very closely. We are still 15 seconds of a competitive drive

:37:30.:37:32.

time. They had these drive prototype tyres. They had deemed it is still

:37:33.:37:41.

too wet for dry tyres. It is a shame they have not had that chance. I

:37:42.:37:46.

suppose it was worth trying to aim for it at least. A couple more of

:37:47.:37:49.

your comments from Mark Webber. A good one from James Thomas. He said,

:37:50.:37:56.

who could forget Mark's spectacular 360 a born Philip in Valencia in

:37:57.:38:02.

2010? It was not quite three and 60 in the air, he went up and crashed

:38:03.:38:07.

down. That was one of the most frightening looking accidents. It

:38:08.:38:12.

was not the flight and the coming down, it was the contact with the

:38:13.:38:16.

barrier that took the wind out of his sails. Those scary moments, you

:38:17.:38:20.

do not know where that will end up. It was not the first time for Mark.

:38:21.:38:24.

He did it twice in a Mercedes sports car. He is going back there with a

:38:25.:38:29.

Porsche and he said he wants to do it on the ground this time. That was

:38:30.:38:34.

in 1999 at the mum and I was commentating on that race. He has

:38:35.:38:40.

had his shunts, no doubt about it. Mark Assad 's unspectacular

:38:41.:38:44.

accidents. Steve says his favourite Webber moment had to be in Hungary

:38:45.:38:48.

in 2010 when he had older tyres and went on to win. Another one was in

:38:49.:38:54.

2007 in the wet when it was his second podium for Red Bull. Some

:38:55.:39:00.

great performances from Mark Webber over the years. Let's see what

:39:01.:39:06.

Sebastian Vettel has been doing. That is where Kimi Raikkonen went

:39:07.:39:11.

off last year. He did not take to the escape road and then have to do

:39:12.:39:14.

3-point turn at the top of the hill but he did run onto the grass which

:39:15.:39:18.

we have not seen Sebastian Vettel do too often this year. Paul Green said

:39:19.:39:24.

his best moment of 2013 was having Gary Anderson on the BBC. There we

:39:25.:39:29.

go! Thank you for your comments. We will be back later on and I hope you

:39:30.:39:35.

will be joining us again and bringing more of your favourite

:39:36.:39:38.

moments from this season and your worst moments as well. We look

:39:39.:39:42.

forward to continuing that later. Let's wrap up what has been going on

:39:43.:39:47.

here. It has been a damp first practice session here in Brazil in

:39:48.:39:51.

the Interlagos circuit for the final Grand Prix event of the year. Felipe

:39:52.:39:56.

Massa is looking to finish as Ferrari career with his special

:39:57.:39:59.

crash helmet design. His 11th fastest. The times are indicative I

:40:00.:40:07.

suppose. Rosberg and Hamilton showing great pace in the Mercedes.

:40:08.:40:13.

The chequered flag is now out so those times will stand as the

:40:14.:40:21.

fastest of this session. Vettel did not do any laps early on. He was the

:40:22.:40:27.

only one to go out on slick tyres at all in this session. A slightly odd

:40:28.:40:31.

strategy by Red Bull but they wanted to experiment with the slick tyres.

:40:32.:40:35.

He was the only one who went out on slicks. He went out on the hard tyre

:40:36.:40:40.

and he also went out on the prototype tyre. He set the third

:40:41.:40:44.

fastest time on intermediate tyres. Barton said his time was comfortable

:40:45.:40:51.

in the McLaren. Alonso will end the session with the fifth fastest time.

:40:52.:40:57.

Mark Webber sixth fastest again. Late before he decided that a lap

:40:58.:41:03.

in. Sergio Perez, seventh fastest. It is his last race for McLaren. We

:41:04.:41:08.

are still waiting to find out where he will be going. Daniil Kvyat did a

:41:09.:41:17.

good job. He was eighth fastest. Heikki Kovalainen, ninth fastest and

:41:18.:41:24.

Nico Hulkenberg ten fastest. Then Massa, Gutierrez 12. Grosjean 30th

:41:25.:41:30.

but not as often do not show their former Friday. Jean-Eric Vergne 14th

:41:31.:41:35.

and Adrian Sutil 15. Then the two Williams cars of Valterri Bottas and

:41:36.:41:41.

Pastor Maldonado. Then behind then we saw James Calado but he did not

:41:42.:41:47.

get many laps. It is the end of the season and all of the teams are on

:41:48.:41:52.

the limit of all the mileage they are allowed to do on the engines.

:41:53.:41:58.

Van der Garde was the fastest of the young teams drivers. He was a

:41:59.:42:03.

fraction faster than Charles Pic in the other Caterham. Then Jules

:42:04.:42:14.

Yankee. That was Valterri Bottas going off. It was exactly the same

:42:15.:42:23.

place as Sebastian Vettel went off. The final time today was set by

:42:24.:42:28.

Rodolfo Gonzalez, the test driver for Marussia. He stood in for Max

:42:29.:42:33.

Chilton in this session but Max Chilton will be out later on for the

:42:34.:42:38.

second free practice session. It has been entertaining. Thank you for

:42:39.:42:42.

your involvement as well. My thanks to Tony Dodgins for joining us and

:42:43.:42:50.

to Alexander Rossi for joining us. Best of luck for your plans next

:42:51.:42:56.

year. Free practice has seen a Mercedes one, , too. Let's get back

:42:57.:42:58.

to the paddock. So, Gary, what have we learned from

:42:59.:43:11.

that session? Every team tried to run on the intermediate tyre. I

:43:12.:43:14.

think at the end they will do better times. Right at the beginning, the

:43:15.:43:18.

two Mercedes cars going out there and doing the times that they did,

:43:19.:43:21.

it looks like Mercedes might have a good weekend. The weather is just

:43:22.:43:27.

starting to dry up as well. Can we expect to see the Pirelli tyres come

:43:28.:43:30.

out in the session -- second session? I think we will see dry

:43:31.:43:36.

running in the second session. Some of the teams have a lot of data

:43:37.:43:40.

analysis stuff on the car but they have taken that. They could be

:43:41.:43:44.

putting that back on. It is confusing for everybody but we will

:43:45.:43:49.

get something at the end of the day. Fingers crossed. Make sure you join

:43:50.:43:52.

us just before four o'clock on BBC Two or if you are watching the

:43:53.:43:56.

repeat it will be in a couple of moments time. From Brazil for now,

:43:57.:43:58.

goodbye.
