Hello and welcome back to a very soggy Brazil. In is Interlagos, the | :01:03. | :01:11.
rain is pouring down. It did stop briefly in between the practice | :01:12. | :01:14.
session, it was lovely. Practise session about to resume. It is | :01:15. | :01:21.
raining heavier. It is heavy. The way the tyre rules work, each drive | :01:22. | :01:27.
gets two seats of each. If yous you set on the Friday it gets replaced. | :01:28. | :01:32.
They will be reluctant to use any other set. With the rain you will | :01:33. | :01:36.
see some of the cars going out of wet tyre, the weather tomorrow it's | :01:37. | :01:40.
a bit of the same. But it changes quickly. The Mercedes with the | :01:41. | :01:44.
fastest cars in first practise session, they look like they could | :01:45. | :01:49.
show something this weekend, and try and help them in the Constructors | :01:50. | :01:54.
Championship. Let us look at the drivers standings, because we know | :01:55. | :01:58.
Vettel has scored his fourth world Drivers' Championship, and last time | :01:59. | :02:02.
out, Fernando Alonso secured second place, but the battle for third is | :02:03. | :02:09.
fairly fierce. Hamilton six points ahead of Mark Webber. Kimi Raikkonen | :02:10. | :02:13.
out of the batting. Do you think that Mark Webber on his last weekend | :02:14. | :02:17.
in Formula One could sneak ahead of Hamilton? There is every chance. I | :02:18. | :02:21.
am sure the Red Bull will be good. Webber is quick, he wants to go out | :02:22. | :02:24.
with the win. The interesting thing is Fernando Alonso, he said after | :02:25. | :02:30.
the last race, that he had won the non-Red Bull Championship, he thinks | :02:31. | :02:35.
that the Red Bull is a special car. In the Constructors Championship the | :02:36. | :02:42.
battle very much alive after. Lotus not out of it completely. They are | :02:43. | :02:46.
18 points behind. It is important this weekend, Gary, that both | :02:47. | :02:51.
drivers perform for their teams. You need two drivers scoring points for | :02:52. | :02:55.
the constructor, this is a big part of the Championship there is 10 | :02:56. | :03:00.
million dollars per position. If you can nick one of those positions and | :03:01. | :03:07.
be $10 million ripper that is a lot of money for next year. And Felipe | :03:08. | :03:12.
Massa in his last race for Ferrari, here on his home circuit the fan | :03:13. | :03:17.
also go crazy for him It is. He has been accepted well by the | :03:18. | :03:23.
Brazilianian fan, Ayrton Senna was the man but Felipe Massa has filled | :03:24. | :03:27.
that space in, you know, it will be sad to see him here, in Brazil. He | :03:28. | :03:33.
will be trying hard. Ben Edwards and Tony are in the commentary box, | :03:34. | :03:38.
drier than us, what is the outlook? We have the best seats in the house. | :03:39. | :03:42.
Looking from the back of the Grandstand to the pits. We will see | :03:43. | :03:47.
a little wet weather running. Things aren't working too well for Pirelli. | :03:48. | :03:55.
? Sno. I had a hard time last year and they hope this year will be | :03:56. | :03:59.
better but the elements haven't helped So the prototype tyre is not | :04:00. | :04:03.
going to get any running at all, they are hoping to get a test in | :04:04. | :04:06.
before Christmas at Bahrain, so it maybe that will give them the | :04:07. | :04:11.
chance, but it hasn't been an ideal day for preparation for all of the | :04:12. | :04:15.
teams. It so so hard to believe the weather, we know Brazil is like | :04:16. | :04:18.
this, this is the first real wet weekend we have had in ages. We | :04:19. | :04:22.
haven't had a lot of wet weekends this season, so it will be | :04:23. | :04:25.
interesting to see, some cars do come to the front when it gets wet, | :04:26. | :04:29.
so interesting to see how that, the outcome of that. All will be | :04:30. | :04:34.
revealed over the next one-and-a-half hours and Ben and | :04:35. | :04:39.
Tony are standing by to talk us through commentary of F B2. -- FP 2. | :04:40. | :04:46.
Red Bull Racing, congratulations to them. It is good to see the support | :04:47. | :04:52.
for all the teams. Ferrari will have a lot of support with Felipe Massa | :04:53. | :04:58.
looking to finish his time with Ferrari in style. Nico Hulkenberg | :04:59. | :05:07.
waiting to ironed out where he will be racing next year. He said it is | :05:08. | :05:12.
the passion of the fans here, he loves the vibrancy of the place. It | :05:13. | :05:17.
has suited him for some reason, he got the pole position in the | :05:18. | :05:21.
Williams which came out of nowhere, it was a session deck Tayed by | :05:22. | :05:25.
weather and the the the same sorry -- story when he led so much last | :05:26. | :05:32.
year. It was wet for much of the race. It was as It was as you say a | :05:33. | :05:38.
mixed condition session when he put it on the pole, it was a fabulous | :05:39. | :05:45.
opportunity lap. He had a race in a car that obviously in the dry wasn't | :05:46. | :05:48.
going to be competitive like it had been in qualifying, and they needed | :05:49. | :05:55.
points. Speaking to Tom McCulloch, his everyone engineer that day who | :05:56. | :06:00.
is at Sauber now, he said he had instructions to get out of the last | :06:01. | :06:04.
corner, protect his position and he said he did brilliant to keep cube | :06:05. | :06:13.
ter behind him. I think that thought that was a fantastic drive. He has | :06:14. | :06:18.
done it numerous times. Fernando Alonso reck lining in the | :06:19. | :06:22.
back of the -- reck Kleining in the Ferrari garage. He has a record of | :06:23. | :06:26.
seven podiums without a victory, that is the most podiums for any of | :06:27. | :06:30.
the drivers to have had at a circuit without having had a win at that | :06:31. | :06:34.
particular track, but he has won the title here a couples couple of time, | :06:35. | :06:40.
he has lost it as well, to Sebastian Vettel, he ended up losing by three | :06:41. | :06:46.
point, he lost out in the 2007, when he Raikkonen and Lewis Hamilton all | :06:47. | :06:50.
arrived with the chance of winning the Championship but it didn't come | :06:51. | :06:55.
together and Kimi nicked it. That time he was 17 points with two to go | :06:56. | :07:01.
and he came and Felipe paid his part in that, helped him out. Yes, | :07:02. | :07:05.
absolutely. Let him have the victory, that could | :07:06. | :07:09.
have been three wins for him. He had three pole positions, but as you | :07:10. | :07:15.
say, he gave up his position to Raikkonen. And I suppose, that is | :07:16. | :07:19.
part and parcel of why Felipe has been such a strong player at | :07:20. | :07:24.
Ferrari. Absolutely. That is tremendously appreciated. If you | :07:25. | :07:27.
think of the following year, one of the most impressive things I have | :07:28. | :07:30.
seen is the way he handled the disappointment of not winning that | :07:31. | :07:34.
title against Lewis Hamilton. He thought for 20 seconds he was the | :07:35. | :07:38.
World Champion, and if you imagine, you know, the gut wrenching | :07:39. | :07:43.
disappointment, and the way he handled himself, in the post race | :07:44. | :07:46.
press conference, magnanimity he showed, you know, towards Lewis, I | :07:47. | :07:51.
thought he was just one of the best pieces of sportsmanship I have seen. | :07:52. | :07:55.
The way he was on the podium. Brilliant. There is Brands Hatch. | :07:56. | :08:01.
Never managed to -- ruebs Barrichello. Probably the most | :08:02. | :08:05.
disappointing one and you can hear the reception she is getting. 2003, | :08:06. | :08:14.
he passed David Coulthard for the lead of the race and ran out of fuel | :08:15. | :08:19.
of all things and he was so out of luck, he, he had some good | :08:20. | :08:23.
performances in very rows different cars, in the brawn, but he never had | :08:24. | :08:28.
the opportunity to actually win the race. Felipe Massa getting a few | :08:29. | :08:31.
photographs together with his crew. That is lovely to see. And the | :08:32. | :08:37.
special crash helmet colour scheme. I know Tom Clarkson was talking to | :08:38. | :08:48.
de la Rosa and what he told Tom was he is so honest, he is very | :08:49. | :08:53.
straight. He will say whether it is his fault or something wrong with | :08:54. | :08:56.
the car or if he doesn't agree with what somebody has done, he is | :08:57. | :09:01.
straightforward, and he says he thinks Williams will appreciate when | :09:02. | :09:04.
he goes to Williams next year. If there is one environment where that | :09:05. | :09:08.
will be appreciated as much as anywhere that is Williams. Nobody | :09:09. | :09:13.
likes drivers making excuses and what have you and honesty is | :09:14. | :09:18.
something they adore. It is good to see. We have plenty of fans hoping | :09:19. | :09:22.
to see some cars on circuit. You wonder at the moment, because the | :09:23. | :09:25.
rain is coming down heavily, so the track is open, but there is no | :09:26. | :09:30.
activity on circuit right now, and it doesn't look like anybody is | :09:31. | :09:34.
getting close, so we are getting the family pictures. It is like a | :09:35. | :09:38.
wedding! We are getting the family photographs. Felipe Massa in the | :09:39. | :09:44.
back of the garage. Yeah, a real festive atmosphere down there at | :09:45. | :09:48.
Ferrari. We were asking you for your best moments and worst moments of in | :09:49. | :09:52.
season. Thank you for replying to us. | :09:53. | :09:57.
I will read out a few more. We were asking you for your favourite | :09:58. | :10:02.
memories of Mark Webber. How ability a few favourry memories of Felipe | :10:03. | :10:06.
Massa at Ferrari? What do you remember about Felipe's career at | :10:07. | :10:10.
Ferrari that you can tell us about. We will try and broadcast a few as | :10:11. | :10:13.
we go through the course of the programme. | :10:14. | :10:17.
Get in touch with us and give us some of your best memories of Felipe | :10:18. | :10:20.
Massa at Ferrari. He started his career at Sauber in Formula One, but | :10:21. | :10:26.
he is coming to the end of nearly 140 Grand Prix with the Ferrari | :10:27. | :10:31.
team. Fantastic performance from him. Max Chilton is about to go out | :10:32. | :10:38.
on track. Let us go down to the pits. | :10:39. | :10:42.
Pat, your title chief technical officer, you have really just joined | :10:43. | :10:46.
the team, how is it going? Pretty well. A couple of months in now, had | :10:47. | :10:52.
a good chance to look at things, look at the very many good things we | :10:53. | :10:57.
have, but you know, we haven't had the results this year, and we need | :10:58. | :11:02.
to improve our, you know, in a lot of areas to get those result, | :11:03. | :11:10.
particularly next year. In Austin you got some points. Third fastest | :11:11. | :11:19.
in the race. A to good run from Valtteri Bottas. Everyone got the | :11:20. | :11:24.
fast laps towards the end. And the way he defended against Rosberg and | :11:25. | :11:29.
pulled away from him, it was very pleasing to see that, and I think it | :11:30. | :11:33.
shows we got the car working better, it was able to use its tyres better | :11:34. | :11:37.
and yes, it is starting to come together. So for next year, a | :11:38. | :11:41.
National Lottery of changes in the car and the power unit, how is that | :11:42. | :11:45.
facing up? Well, it keeps you awake at night, that is for sure, with the | :11:46. | :11:50.
amount there is to do. You know, I honestly think in 30 odd years I | :11:51. | :11:54.
have been in Formula One it is the biggest change. It is significantly | :11:55. | :11:59.
different aerodynamically. It is different in the Powertrain. There | :12:00. | :12:04.
is just a lot to do. But it is coming on. You changed to Mercedes | :12:05. | :12:12.
engines, how is that relationship building? Very good. | :12:13. | :12:16.
I mean Renault are a very professional outfit and so are | :12:17. | :12:20.
Mercedes, we need to sort of learn the language a bit, because everyone | :12:21. | :12:25.
talks in a slightly different way about things, and of course, as I | :12:26. | :12:29.
was saying earlier, because the power train is so different, we have | :12:30. | :12:34.
new things to learn about. But a lot of respect for Mercedes doing a | :12:35. | :12:39.
great job, and yes, I think it will be a very good engine. The engines | :12:40. | :12:43.
have been round for a long time, so they are all pretty equal, do you | :12:44. | :12:47.
see next year Mercedes maybe getting it right and Renault and Ferrari | :12:48. | :12:51.
struggling, or do you think everybody will get the same sort of | :12:52. | :12:55.
level? They are all professional, that is a diplomatic answer. I am | :12:56. | :13:00.
sure they will get it right. Yes, it is different. In so many fundamental | :13:01. | :13:08.
way, we have been so used to, with racing engines putting in as much | :13:09. | :13:12.
air as we can and then it is easy to put the fuel in. Now we are limited | :13:13. | :13:18.
on fuel. Different for the engine designers and different for us as | :13:19. | :13:23.
teams in how we utilise the engine. With so much more complication, | :13:24. | :13:32.
reliability could be an issue? Yes, these day, they are very | :13:33. | :13:37.
sophisticated and by the time a car gets on the track at the end of | :13:38. | :13:43.
January, they will have done many race simulation, but yeah, again, so | :13:44. | :13:49.
many new things to think about. Turbo chargers and the large | :13:50. | :13:52.
electric motors and things like that, new things we need to | :13:53. | :13:56.
understand. Do you look at this change in regulations as an | :13:57. | :13:59.
opportunity for William tots get back to the front? Because | :14:00. | :14:02.
everything is changed so much. That must be an opening for you to get | :14:03. | :14:06.
back to the front and compete with the big teams? Yes, whether that is | :14:07. | :14:11.
a philosophical thing or detail, there is no secret we have struggled | :14:12. | :14:21.
with the exhaust, and among the many regulation changes next year, there | :14:22. | :14:25.
is effectively rules that make it impossible to have that type of | :14:26. | :14:28.
exhaust, so I think things like that can help us, but really it will come | :14:29. | :14:35.
down to have we got the ability to exploit things properly. It was | :14:36. | :14:39.
quite a late change to us, to go to Mercedes, so, you know, we are | :14:40. | :14:44.
perhaps a bit behind things on that, but I am confident. All right. | :14:45. | :14:47.
Thanks for your time and good luck for the rest of the weekend. | :14:48. | :14:52.
Great to hear from Pat Symonds about the Williams team as they look | :14:53. | :14:55.
forward to next year with the power plant. This is of course the end of | :14:56. | :15:01.
the V 8 era we are watching as we see Heikki Kovalainen about do a | :15:02. | :15:05.
practise start at the end of the pit lane, sneaking his way past the | :15:06. | :15:10.
barriers. Then the systems helping him to launch himself off the line. | :15:11. | :15:26.
The actual corners are not too bad. But on the straights, there is a lot | :15:27. | :15:28.
of water. It is not ideal. You are having to | :15:29. | :15:42.
limit yourself down the straight. Max Chilton talking. The first two | :15:43. | :15:52.
lapse. I will quickly remind you of what happened this morning. It was | :15:53. | :15:57.
not quite as wet. The only driver that went out on something other | :15:58. | :16:03.
than a wet tyre was Sebastien Dettol. He had a slick. He had a | :16:04. | :16:18.
hard compound tyre. It was a Mercedes one, two. Fernando Alonso | :16:19. | :16:28.
was fifth fastest. A very impressive performance from the Russian | :16:29. | :16:33.
driver. He was eighth fastest in the free practice. Ninth was high kick | :16:34. | :16:39.
over line on. We're watching him now. -- Heikki Kovalainen. | :16:40. | :17:49.
I thought it was nice to just listen to the end of the V8 era. How | :17:50. | :18:04.
different will it sound when we get to the 2014 season? Going back to | :18:05. | :18:10.
the fact he was changing up dear, what happens with these cars, Lotus | :18:11. | :18:19.
has a good example of this system you need to get the throttle open to | :18:20. | :18:23.
get the exhaust system to give it a rear downforce full if you lifted | :18:24. | :18:27.
you get less we downforce. That is the last thing you want to do. -- a | :18:28. | :18:37.
rear downforce. If you lift it, you get less rear downforce. These | :18:38. | :18:48.
engines are V8. They really are fantastic. Next year it is a 1600 cc | :18:49. | :18:56.
engine. The RPM will be less so the noise will not be there. The | :18:57. | :18:59.
turbocharger will take away the noise. That was a turbine which | :19:00. | :19:09.
spins the turbine up to speed. There is another turbine which is putting | :19:10. | :19:13.
the call and fresh air into the engine to give its power. When you | :19:14. | :19:18.
do that, it acts like a silencer. You are taking energy from the | :19:19. | :19:22.
exhaust pipe and doing something with it. Energy come straight out of | :19:23. | :19:28.
the exhaust pipe. I think it will still sound pretty good. I think it | :19:29. | :19:34.
will. It will still be Formula One will stop this is not a shabby | :19:35. | :19:53.
performance. It is quite a reasonable lap, given the | :19:54. | :19:56.
conditions. These slower cars were doing 128, 130. It is much wetter | :19:57. | :20:08.
than it was. Take a look at this! Down in the paddock, a bit of work | :20:09. | :20:14.
going on in front of Mark Webber 's barrage. They have a gully in front | :20:15. | :20:20.
of the car. They have been trying to sort out how to try to drain the | :20:21. | :20:24.
galley because it is in the way and causing a problem. -- the gulley. | :20:25. | :20:45.
The Red Bull team is trying to work out how to get rid of the standing | :20:46. | :20:52.
water. This is the last race weekend in Formula One. We will try to grab | :20:53. | :20:58.
him in a few minutes time. I wonder if they will shout for that, take | :20:59. | :21:03.
the rough edges off and get it absolutely perfect. He completes | :21:04. | :21:13.
another lap - Heikki Kovalainen. A little bit faster than his previous | :21:14. | :21:17.
lap. He is the only car on track, is he? It looks as though we will see | :21:18. | :21:31.
more cars taking to the track. This is Jules Bianchi. It is the end of | :21:32. | :21:40.
the Colts worth era. What a famous name it is! -- Cosworth. Let's run | :21:41. | :21:57.
through your comments about the highs and lows the season. You can | :21:58. | :22:12.
tweet us. The drivers market being, constantly dominated by paid | :22:13. | :22:17.
drivers. Alex saying, my best moment was the win by Kim. My low moment | :22:18. | :22:36.
was the reaction of Vettel. Hamilton stopped at the wrong pits in the | :22:37. | :22:42.
lazier. He did not get that right. It is raining heavily. -- in | :22:43. | :22:48.
Malaysia will stop conditions are getting worse. The best moment where | :22:49. | :22:56.
the Silverstone blow outs. The worst moment was that he rarely had to | :22:57. | :23:02.
change the tyre compounds. The worst moment was the bad luck of Mark | :23:03. | :23:08.
Webber and retirement. I'd best moment was proposing to my fiancee | :23:09. | :23:12.
while in Canada while watching the Canadian grand prix. That is his | :23:13. | :23:18.
special F1 moment. Watching Jules Bianchi. He has done a pretty good | :23:19. | :23:25.
job so far this year. A lot of people say he has been one of the | :23:26. | :23:29.
most impressive rookies. It is hard to tell. Right from the first moment | :23:30. | :23:39.
he got into the car, he was very quick. Speaking to Max Chilton, he | :23:40. | :23:43.
regards him as a decent yardstick. You have to look at what he has done | :23:44. | :23:48.
and not many drivers could have done a better job with that car. The team | :23:49. | :23:55.
they are battling with four tenths in the championship are seriously | :23:56. | :24:01.
impressed with Jules Bianchi. Within Caterham, they have looked at his | :24:02. | :24:06.
performances and seen he is delivering performances that the car | :24:07. | :24:09.
does not always warrant full that is always the sign of a good driver. | :24:10. | :24:16.
Marussia did make a step this year. They planned to get on with what | :24:17. | :24:23.
they had and concentrate on 2014. For the small teams, it is difficult | :24:24. | :24:27.
to cope with the changes while developing the current car. Marussia | :24:28. | :24:32.
made the step and they thought, we have got to do more development on | :24:33. | :24:38.
this car. That threw them a bit. They started looking at the | :24:39. | :24:41.
performances that Jules Bianchi was getting. It is tight. One 13th place | :24:42. | :24:59.
for Caterham would be enough for them to reclaim the spot. Jenson | :25:00. | :25:03.
Button does not look as though he is getting ready to do anything at the | :25:04. | :25:08.
moment. He is sitting out and watching the session. Only one car | :25:09. | :25:13.
on track at the moment which is Jules Bianchi. Max Chilton is also | :25:14. | :25:17.
back in. There is Romain Grosjean. He is one of the stars of the last | :25:18. | :25:25.
time out in the USA. He got second place in Canada last season. What a | :25:26. | :25:35.
turnaround! The team saw elements of Romain Grosjean in Monaco which were | :25:36. | :25:39.
just as worrying as they had seen last year. Since then he turned it | :25:40. | :25:46.
down completely. That is one of the feel-good stories. When he came in | :25:47. | :25:53.
2009, he put it a couple of tenths away. I thought, that was a good | :25:54. | :25:58.
effort. It was totally the wrong time. They were in a bit of mayhem. | :25:59. | :26:04.
They did not really have their eyes on who was in the second half. He | :26:05. | :26:10.
did not get to keep that. Then he had the problem last year when he | :26:11. | :26:16.
was named the first lap and he admitted that psychologically that | :26:17. | :26:22.
was hard to get over and be aggressive on first lap again when | :26:23. | :26:26.
he was in danger of being blamed for everything that was going on. He has | :26:27. | :26:30.
done well coming out from that and he is one of the standout guys. This | :26:31. | :26:39.
is impressive! You can see his reactions. He is working this doing | :26:40. | :26:44.
well and getting it turned in. As the front end grips, he is trying to | :26:45. | :26:50.
get the power down. Watch him! Sideways, mid-corner. He picks up | :26:51. | :26:52.
the throttle. That sounded pretty flat. It is a | :26:53. | :27:07.
tricky corner onto the straight. Easily that in the drive. -- the | :27:08. | :27:28.
dry. The Cosworth will not be around next season. Great driving by Jules | :27:29. | :27:37.
Bianchi. Let's get back down to the pits and we have Romain Grosjean. | :27:38. | :27:45.
Man of the moment. Congratulations! Where does this run of consistency | :27:46. | :27:53.
with podiums come from? I knew I was capable. It is a good series. We | :27:54. | :28:00.
have a good car, a good team. It is not a secret. That is what we are | :28:01. | :28:09.
trying to achieve every weekend. How good did it feel with beating one of | :28:10. | :28:18.
the Red Bulls in Austen? I said, come on, we need to get second. It | :28:19. | :28:22.
was a very strong race. A good defence on Mark will stop we did | :28:23. | :28:28.
manage to keep him behind, which was nice. He has been one of your | :28:29. | :28:35.
biggest critics. He was a bit harsh on you. You have made up, have you? | :28:36. | :28:43.
This year, it was not easy on me but I was the first one to be happy with | :28:44. | :28:49.
myself. It was nice to do that. It is always nice to get good comments | :28:50. | :28:56.
from others. He has a lot of experience in Formula One and I | :28:57. | :29:02.
tried to do my best every weekend. How important has seeing a | :29:03. | :29:08.
psychologist been to you? It has made a huge difference. I knew I was | :29:09. | :29:12.
capable of winning the title because I did it in the past with Formula | :29:13. | :29:22.
One. This is why we have to be better. That would be the dream. It | :29:23. | :29:28.
is every day and every session that has been different. A lot of doubt | :29:29. | :29:35.
about next year for Lotus. Will you be back here? Nothing has been | :29:36. | :29:42.
confirmed but I can do better. We are riding on board the Red Bull of | :29:43. | :29:47.
Mark Webber. Joining us from the pitfall is the team principal. Thank | :29:48. | :29:51.
you for joining us. The conditions are not what you wanted. | :29:52. | :30:10.
So hopefully we will get a glimpse of you on the pit wall. What are | :30:11. | :30:17.
your latest forecasts for the weekend, in terms of qualifying and | :30:18. | :30:22.
the race? Qualifying looks a bit like the earlier session today, so | :30:23. | :30:27.
not quite as heavy rain. Sunday is moving round, it depends which | :30:28. | :30:32.
forecast you are looking at, some are saying heavy rain and sub | :30:33. | :30:36.
dieding, so Sunday is far harder to predict. This is Mark's final ever | :30:37. | :30:42.
Grand Prix, with you or any team, you had, I think you had a get | :30:43. | :30:47.
together, in town the other day, how did that go? Yes, the team had an | :30:48. | :30:53.
evening out with Mark and the car crew and the engineers and so on and | :30:54. | :30:58.
Sebastien went along, they had a great eening, and, you know, it -- | :30:59. | :31:04.
evening and it is Mark last's Grand Prix weekend and it is important for | :31:05. | :31:09.
him and the team he has a strong day. We have been asking the | :31:10. | :31:12.
audience, they have been tweeting with some of the highlights of Mark | :31:13. | :31:16.
Webber's career, driving for you, at Red Bull. What for you what really | :31:17. | :31:21.
stands out in your mind as one of the great moments of Mark? Without a | :31:22. | :31:28.
doubt his first victory in Nurburgring was great for him. It | :31:29. | :31:33.
was great to see him win that against adversity. He made contact | :31:34. | :31:39.
with Barrichello and got a drive through, despite that went on to | :31:40. | :31:42.
dominate the race and win his first Grand Prix. The elation he had in | :31:43. | :31:47.
the car with his Harry met Sally moment, on the team radio, it was | :31:48. | :31:50.
great to see, great for him, and great for the team. | :31:51. | :31:55.
And what are you going to miss about not having him in the team? He is a | :31:56. | :32:03.
straight talking individual, it has made a big contribution the | :32:04. | :32:08.
development of the car, his feedback is hugely valuable. He has a very | :32:09. | :32:12.
good understanding of what is going on round him, with the experience he | :32:13. | :32:18.
has, he is going to be missed next year. | :32:19. | :32:32.
One file question is Daniil Kvyat is joining Toro Rosso. He won that | :32:33. | :32:36.
Championship, he is a very talented young man, he has got great car | :32:37. | :32:40.
control, he is massively brave, and I think, you know, he has a bright | :32:41. | :32:45.
future ahead of him. He is very young. He will be a bit green but it | :32:46. | :32:49.
was the right decision to give him the chance. | :32:50. | :32:51.
Right. We are going to be speaking to him. So thank you very much. And | :32:52. | :32:56.
we will get it from the horse's mouth. | :32:57. | :33:02.
So on track at the moment, indeed Daniil Kvyat was listening to that, | :33:03. | :33:07.
as Christian was talking about your prospects, lovely have you with us. | :33:08. | :33:13.
Well done the morning, that was a really good effort this morning, you | :33:14. | :33:17.
ended up with the eighth fastest time. First time in a Formula One | :33:18. | :33:22.
car in the wet, how was it? It was very nice. First time, in the wet | :33:23. | :33:27.
conditions with the Formula One car, yeah, I think I got on quite well. | :33:28. | :33:32.
Got quite confident with the car, from lap two or three I would say I | :33:33. | :33:39.
got a long run, pushing on. My best lap was lap 38 which I am pleased | :33:40. | :33:43.
about. When you are stepping up from something like a GP 3 car to a | :33:44. | :33:47.
Formula One the biggest difference is the amount of horsepower, the | :33:48. | :33:52.
ability to spin the rear wheel up, the acceleration of the car, is that | :33:53. | :33:56.
not daunting in the wet? You are right. It requires a lot of lot | :33:57. | :34:02.
toing control, for sure it was a bit difficult in the beginning today, | :34:03. | :34:08.
but yeah, you make lap time on the braking, a lot on the car's speed so | :34:09. | :34:13.
it a combination of factors which you have to put together, to have a | :34:14. | :34:19.
good lap time, so today I got a good feel for it. It helps me to finish | :34:20. | :34:23.
the session in a good position. You did very well. Congratulations to | :34:24. | :34:27.
that. We are introducing you to a whole new audience, you wrapped up | :34:28. | :34:32.
the GP Championship, well done for that, congratulations, you are going | :34:33. | :34:35.
to be stepping up to the big game, Formula One, you are confirmed at | :34:36. | :34:39.
testosterone, you will be driving along -- as Toro Rosso. You are 19 | :34:40. | :34:43.
at the moment. So you will be again one of the youngest we have seen in | :34:44. | :34:47.
formula one, tell me how your racing start, you don't come from a motor | :34:48. | :34:51.
sporting background, wasn't something about going off for a | :34:52. | :34:57.
pizza, that is how it began? Yes it started, no-one in my family was | :34:58. | :35:04.
involved in racing so far, so, yeah, just carting, carting first then | :35:05. | :35:07.
some carting in Russia. You saw a rental track one day Yes, wanted to | :35:08. | :35:12.
try. Gave it a try and it went quite well. Enjoyed making the corners, | :35:13. | :35:18.
the speed, all together, just, just really, really loved it straight | :35:19. | :35:23.
way, then kept going. How old were you when you first drove a cart? | :35:24. | :35:27.
Nine. So you, you obviously grew up in Russia, but to build your carting | :35:28. | :35:31.
career you moved to Italy, how old were you when you moved to Italy | :35:32. | :35:36.
Almost 13-year-old, yeah, I grew up in Russia, basically of course, that | :35:37. | :35:41.
is my home country, forever will be. Yes, we saw that there is basically | :35:42. | :35:46.
no culture in Russia, that the time. It is now a bit better but there was | :35:47. | :35:51.
no culture for the racing, so, yeah, we saw the countries which are | :35:52. | :35:56.
really good for a carting career are Italy, England, France and so on, so | :35:57. | :36:03.
that the time my team was based in Rome, so it was a good choice. So | :36:04. | :36:08.
you now speak fluent Italian, I think you speak a bit of Spanish. | :36:09. | :36:14.
Yes, a lot of Spanish. So you clearly speak Russian and you speak | :36:15. | :36:17.
remarkably good English. Thanks. That is a pretty impressive sign, | :36:18. | :36:21.
you can speak to journalistings from most of the different country, but | :36:22. | :36:25.
part of the reason you speak English so well is go you have been living | :36:26. | :36:32.
in Milton Keynes for a while. Yes, I I don't have a permanent house for | :36:33. | :36:37.
now. But this year, mainly I have been living in Milton Keynes, in the | :36:38. | :36:43.
UK, so it has been my home, and I think it might stay like this for | :36:44. | :36:48.
the next year, so it a bit of English as well. It is really good. | :36:49. | :36:55.
For working with Toro Rosso, they are based in Italy, so the fact you | :36:56. | :36:59.
could speak Italian is a nice aspect to that. Let us just tell you what | :37:00. | :37:04.
is happening in the session itself. It is still very wet. Webber | :37:05. | :37:08.
quickest at the moment. Rosberg is going on the a lap, first time lap. | :37:09. | :37:11.
This will be interesting because he was fastest this morning, so it will | :37:12. | :37:15.
be interesting to see what kind of lap time he can do. But yes, | :37:16. | :37:19.
presumably being able to communicate with the team in their language, it | :37:20. | :37:24.
helps, doesn't it Definitely. It helps that I can speak Italian with | :37:25. | :37:29.
the team, so yes, it is a big help. Big pleasure for me because it is | :37:30. | :37:33.
like at home, it is a great opportunity for me and happy to be | :37:34. | :37:37.
part of the Italian team. Let us watch Rosberg. Talk us round the | :37:38. | :37:42.
lap. I know it is wetter so there is more standing water. Talk us about | :37:43. | :37:46.
where you found the most challenging areas. This corner where he is now, | :37:47. | :37:52.
it is challenging. It goes down head. You risk a lot. In the end it | :37:53. | :37:57.
is about getting right to the brakings on this track, you can | :37:58. | :38:02.
choose a few different lines in some corner, this corner is one of the | :38:03. | :38:06.
trickiest ones because it is combined acceleration and turn, yes, | :38:07. | :38:13.
slippery, we see he is three tenths down, confirming their morning pace. | :38:14. | :38:19.
It's a good car in the wet. Yes, I would say they have been good the | :38:20. | :38:23.
whole year, mainly up and down, in the end who is the most consistent | :38:24. | :38:29.
ones, it is Red Bull. We can see on the final sheet. So it goes fastest. | :38:30. | :38:36.
1: 28.8. A little quicker than Mark Webber. Of course when you get | :38:37. | :38:40.
conditions like this, being out at a certain moment can make a big | :38:41. | :38:43.
difference as to whether it is raining harder or less hard, it can | :38:44. | :38:47.
be difficult to know when to be on circuit. For sure. It dependsen a | :38:48. | :38:54.
lot on how the amount of water is on the track. Right now everyone is | :38:55. | :38:57.
using it, we can see standing water on the side of the track. So, yeah, | :38:58. | :39:04.
it is quite hard conditions. Yes. And... Listen. | :39:05. | :39:07.
RADIO: I think that is enough for me. | :39:08. | :39:12.
That's enough. He has gone faster. He doesn't need to do any more. | :39:13. | :39:16.
Confirms he has been fast, and saving the times for qualifying, I | :39:17. | :39:19.
think that is useful. That is what most of the team is going to do. We | :39:20. | :39:24.
have been talking about the fact it is the end of the V 8 era. You | :39:25. | :39:30.
managed to get running in, but next year it is a whole different story | :39:31. | :39:35.
with the V 6 turbo charged and much more electric motor involvement in | :39:36. | :39:39.
how a Formula One car workser, have you had a chance to get on the | :39:40. | :39:45.
simulator yet? We tried a few times, the new model. It is reap green for | :39:46. | :39:50.
the moment, so the proper running will start as soon as the | :39:51. | :39:57.
Championships ends, so after Brazil. Most of the teams are focussed for | :39:58. | :40:02.
next year already. Yes, I am sure. There is a few battles to be worked | :40:03. | :40:07.
out here. The battle for second to be decided Toro Rosso nothing really | :40:08. | :40:11.
happening for them. There is no chance of them catching anyone or | :40:12. | :40:16.
being caught so they are doing their own thing? Yes, for sure Daniel | :40:17. | :40:22.
Ricciardo, he wants to finish his career on a high. So, yes I I think | :40:23. | :40:28.
there is still a chance for nice points and it is good to know you | :40:29. | :40:33.
can finish in the points. It is basic work, but points are always | :40:34. | :40:37.
welcome. Indeed. Jean-Eric Vergne, because he has not had any points | :40:38. | :40:43.
since Canada, he has gone through a long period. Watching Hulkenberg who | :40:44. | :40:50.
has had a remarkably good run of result, especially after Hungary | :40:51. | :40:55.
when chases to the Sauber were made. The exhaust effect on these cars has | :40:56. | :40:59.
had a big effect. I don't think for Toro Rosso they have managed to get | :41:00. | :41:02.
that kind of exhaust effect to work as well as perhaps they would have | :41:03. | :41:07.
liked. It is strue, let us say after Silverstone there has been a bit of | :41:08. | :41:10.
a down in the team, not so many points any more, just a few occasion | :41:11. | :41:18.
races like Monza and so on. So probably also the fact that the | :41:19. | :41:24.
tyres has been changed from Silverstone affected them, but, | :41:25. | :41:29.
yeah, I mean, it is hard to say to be honest what Sauber has done to | :41:30. | :41:34.
their car to improve it. I think something has been done for sure, | :41:35. | :41:38.
this is how it looked. It is great to have you with us, I know you are | :41:39. | :41:42.
a busy boy and Toro Rosso don't want to lose you too long from the pit | :41:43. | :41:45.
garage because you have to learn stuff as well as to what they are | :41:46. | :41:48.
running through, but thank you very much for joining u we look forward | :41:49. | :41:52.
to you coming back in to Formula One as a full-time driver next year. | :41:53. | :41:57.
Thank you, I can't wait. So Dan dancing thank you for joining | :41:58. | :42:01.
us in our practise session and best of luck with next season. . I am | :42:02. | :42:05.
sure you have a few more fans now. Thank you very much. | :42:06. | :42:10.
So the session continues, with still have 52 minutes to go. We have a few | :42:11. | :42:15.
cars out there as we see Hulkenberg hurtling round in the Sauber. He is | :42:16. | :42:24.
third fastest to Mark Webber. You have Pic. Jules Bianchi and Max | :42:25. | :42:28.
Chilton. The Caterhams have got more pace in these conditions. It is what | :42:29. | :42:35.
we saw this morn, as Rossi told us, more downfalls on the Caterham is | :42:36. | :42:38.
helping them, because they have the edge over Marussia, so Marussia | :42:39. | :42:41.
won't want to see a wet race day, that is for sure, particularly a few | :42:42. | :42:48.
cars end up spinning off. Tony, interesting wasn't it chatting to | :42:49. | :42:51.
Daniil Kvyat, he is 19, yet the maturity and the way he speaks is | :42:52. | :42:56.
phenomenal Amazing. It is an underestimated facet of the job, if | :42:57. | :43:01.
you look at the young guys he speaks for language, we watched Sebastian | :43:02. | :43:05.
Vettel win a race and we forget he is only 26. It seems ancient | :43:06. | :43:09.
compared to Daniil Kvyat, he gets out of the car, he speaks in a, what | :43:10. | :43:14.
isn't his mother tongue, hugely impressively, and it is all part of | :43:15. | :43:20.
being, having an all round package which you need these days. We know | :43:21. | :43:27.
one observer who was very impressed by watching Dan, he looked at home | :43:28. | :43:31.
he said, from the very first laps He has done a great job in both the | :43:32. | :43:36.
outings, and, when you look at him and think, he is 19, he said, it was | :43:37. | :43:43.
almost by accident I got into it. What an amazing opportunity for him. | :43:44. | :43:47.
He has deserved it because of what he has done in carting and come | :43:48. | :43:52.
through the rank, he only had the Red Bull support because he is fast | :43:53. | :43:55.
in everything. Watching this year, the GP 3 series he has been | :43:56. | :43:58.
impressive in that and quick. Indeed. Gary, let us get down do | :43:59. | :44:04.
you, I know you wanted to talk about the aspect of how the teams preheat | :44:05. | :44:08.
the tyres before the cars go out on circuit. It is something in Formula | :44:09. | :44:12.
One that is important. These tyre blanket, tell us what you are | :44:13. | :44:15.
thinking? We hear a lot about warming up the tyre, couldn't get | :44:16. | :44:19.
the tyres to come in, I am down outside the Lotus garage, if we have | :44:20. | :44:23.
a closer look. This is a set of the wet tyre, and this is the blankets | :44:24. | :44:27.
that warm up the wet tyres, and you can see the numbers on them, we will | :44:28. | :44:33.
go into this, because we are getting tripped up. Somebody doesn't want us | :44:34. | :44:36.
to see it. They are warming up the wet tyres to 0 degree, and that is | :44:37. | :44:42.
you don't cook the compound, if you go to an intermediate set of tyres | :44:43. | :44:46.
they will warm them up more, that is what this pile was, but then on the | :44:47. | :44:51.
double heating blanket system on the dry weather tyre, and what you do | :44:52. | :44:56.
with them, is you try to put as much heat as possible through the side | :44:57. | :45:01.
walls so you don't cook the compound, you don't overheat the | :45:02. | :45:04.
compound, you are turning as much into the rim and the side wall of | :45:05. | :45:07.
the tyre, these were set at 110 degrees on the side walls and the | :45:08. | :45:12.
tread was set at 100 degrees so they are trying to get the mass | :45:13. | :45:15.
temperature up but not overheat the compound and make it go hard, | :45:16. | :45:19.
because these tyres are matured I think you might call it, at | :45:20. | :45:24.
Pirelli's factory and they are matured in an oven. And it is very | :45:25. | :45:27.
important where you stop the temperature cycle because if you go | :45:28. | :45:33.
too far the tyre goes harder, if you stop too soon the tyre shreds are | :45:34. | :45:37.
itself to death. This is very important when the tyre is new. | :45:38. | :45:42.
But it is interesting to see. Thank you. Fascinating, and each | :45:43. | :45:46.
team working out their own solution for that. We are riding onboard with | :45:47. | :45:52.
Paul di Resta. He didn't get to do any running this morning because | :45:53. | :45:57.
Colin Calderwood -- James Calado was in his car. | :45:58. | :46:00.
Paul di Resta showing us it is still very twitchy, look at that, very | :46:01. | :46:25.
slippery out there. A crucial corner. Let's just listen. In the | :46:26. | :47:00.
wet, you are always going to get wheel spin. Let's quickly join the | :47:01. | :47:07.
man who was in that car earlier on. They are just about to bring one of | :47:08. | :47:11.
the cars then. You managed to get out for a bit of a run and you | :47:12. | :47:15.
managed to get out for a bit of a run and he wanted to do more. It is | :47:16. | :47:25.
my first time in the rain. Limited laps, I was given a note on the | :47:26. | :47:31.
shoulder. Keep on the tracks, do not go off. I took it really steady. I | :47:32. | :47:37.
did not push that hard. To be just behind Adrian and not having driven | :47:38. | :47:43.
this track at all, or driven in the rain is pretty good. It is wet. It | :47:44. | :48:02.
is better than in England. Paul is out at the moment. Missing a session | :48:03. | :48:12.
is slightly frustrating. If it had been drier, I doubt I would have | :48:13. | :48:18.
driven. The forecast was a lot worse. I was lucky to get a few laps | :48:19. | :48:23.
and my belt. Fantastic to go around here, particularly when you think | :48:24. | :48:28.
about all of history. It was a session where we needed limited data | :48:29. | :48:42.
so I just did Ltd laps. It is one of those sessions when you cannot do a | :48:43. | :48:46.
huge amount. You are limited on tyres as well. What have the | :48:47. | :48:51.
engineers that you need to work out from today? We are trying to work | :48:52. | :48:58.
out a good crossover. The weather is unpredictable this weekend, | :48:59. | :49:03.
particularly here. A view balanced changes and that is it really. Quite | :49:04. | :49:08.
simple when it is like this. For me now, there is a little bit of | :49:09. | :49:13.
waiting around, getting into groups and everything and seeing how they | :49:14. | :49:18.
get on. A pretty easy day for me. There are not two more unpredictable | :49:19. | :49:27.
seat at the moment in Force India. I know you have been off to do a | :49:28. | :49:31.
couple of other things. I have options open for next year. I have | :49:32. | :49:37.
not got millions of pounds for a Formula One seat so it is | :49:38. | :49:42.
unfortunate. What do you do? Hopes among comes along with millions of | :49:43. | :49:47.
pounds and then get a chance. -- hope that someone comes along. I | :49:48. | :49:51.
will stay involved and hopefully times will get better and I will get | :49:52. | :49:58.
a chance. We have good options for next year. I would ideally like to | :49:59. | :50:06.
carry on racing. It is unlikely now, to be honest. Good luck. Talking | :50:07. | :50:14.
about the crossover between the wets and the intermediates. Talking about | :50:15. | :50:18.
the lap time it would be suitable to switch from one to the other. We | :50:19. | :50:21.
should be getting down to that region. The fastest time at the | :50:22. | :50:48.
moment is -- 1:28.48. . If you can do this on the intermediates, it is | :50:49. | :50:57.
time for the slick tyres. It is always difficult. We are getting | :50:58. | :51:02.
flooding in some areas on the track. That is the problem. The wet tyres | :51:03. | :51:06.
are the safest combination right now just because of the puddles and | :51:07. | :51:12.
making sure it does not Aqua plane. Some of the drivers have been saying | :51:13. | :51:16.
the corners are OK. They might suffer the consequences if the car | :51:17. | :51:24.
goes of the road. Thanks for your comments coming in about high 's and | :51:25. | :51:31.
lows from this season will stop Ollie George is saying, the best | :51:32. | :51:35.
moment, Romain Grosjean showing the speed that earned him a drive. The | :51:36. | :51:40.
worst moment, the domination of Sebastian Vettel. My best moment was | :51:41. | :51:46.
when Nico Hulkenberg got third on the grid. A few people are | :51:47. | :51:52.
supporting that. You talking about a few of your memories of the Lupe | :51:53. | :51:58.
Massa at Ferrari. Those glorious few moments when he was world champion. | :51:59. | :52:06.
-- the Lupe Masser. I still remember his face as Hamilton won the | :52:07. | :52:10.
championship. He is a good driver and somehow angered Lady luck. The | :52:11. | :52:25.
special relationship of Massa at Istanbul. The double overtake by | :52:26. | :52:35.
Massa at the Canadian Grand Prix was brilliant. He is a great rider and | :52:36. | :52:42.
he will be missed. His career is not ending. He will be this man 's | :52:43. | :52:48.
team-mate. Valterri Bottas, he is quite aggressive on the initial | :52:49. | :52:52.
turn. He feels the front end of the car by turning quite riskily. He is | :52:53. | :52:58.
a real star of the future. Last year, when McLaren found themselves | :52:59. | :53:04.
in the position of having to find a replacement for Lewis Hamilton, he | :53:05. | :53:10.
has been doing the Fridays for Williams and he was not on anyone 's | :53:11. | :53:16.
radar. He is another maker Hakkinen. They think he is that good. This | :53:17. | :53:27.
year, he has been off the radar because of the performance of that | :53:28. | :53:32.
car. He has had two opportunities to shine, one in Canada and then in | :53:33. | :53:37.
Austin. He has done it both times. I think he is the real deal. How will | :53:38. | :53:45.
it stack up with Massa? Will it be Valterri Bottas or Massa? I would | :53:46. | :53:57.
not bet against Valterri Bottas. Just purely what he knows from 13 | :53:58. | :54:01.
years in Formula One would be valuable to them. I would be very | :54:02. | :54:06.
surprised if Massa got it. It'll be one to watch. The experienced Massa | :54:07. | :54:14.
against Valterri Bottas. He is coming to the end of his first full | :54:15. | :54:25.
season. He is to -- two points behind. Now for the final couple of | :54:26. | :54:31.
corners. Rosberg is currently fastest. He is fourth fastest with | :54:32. | :54:45.
that. Just behind Romain Grosjean. Another quite good lap by Vander | :54:46. | :54:54.
guard in this session. He has been slightly outperforming Charles Pic | :54:55. | :55:03.
in the latter part of this season. Daniel Ricciardo has another crash | :55:04. | :55:10.
helmet, celebrating his Australian heritage but also the Italian team | :55:11. | :55:16.
that he is going to be moving. The big, Red Bull team next year. The | :55:17. | :55:21.
first home Grand Prix will be on home turf in Australia. He will be | :55:22. | :55:26.
under the media spotlight. Everyone at Red Bull will help him to do with | :55:27. | :55:30.
that. I am sure they will. Mark Webber has made a point of trying to | :55:31. | :55:35.
divorce himself from a lot of media pressure and saying no to a lot of | :55:36. | :55:39.
the big requests from media and that sort of thing. Daniel Ricciardo is | :55:40. | :55:43.
going to have to do likewise otherwise he will be snowed under. | :55:44. | :55:49.
He is a laid-back guy. Hopefully a lot of that will wash over him. I | :55:50. | :55:55.
think he has a good character to cope with that. He is very quick. | :55:56. | :56:00.
It'll be interesting to see if he has the technical capability and the | :56:01. | :56:05.
rest of the package that is needed to show up well against someone like | :56:06. | :56:11.
Sebastian Vettel. That was not as quick as his previous best. Everyone | :56:12. | :56:15.
is still out there on wet tyres. Quite a few who have not done a lap | :56:16. | :56:20.
time at all and those are the likes of Sebastian Vettel, Fernando | :56:21. | :56:37.
Alonso, Massa. Quite a few drivers not having set any lap time at all | :56:38. | :56:41.
in the second free practice session. Maybe they will be coming | :56:42. | :56:46.
out the bit later on. We will have to wait and see. Another practice | :56:47. | :56:50.
session on Saturday morning before they go into the all-important | :56:51. | :56:53.
qualifying. For now, it seems they are not learning a huge amount. Two | :56:54. | :56:58.
carve out on track at the moment. A couple more comment about Massa. We | :56:59. | :57:06.
will miss the Smedley- Massa relationship. He has been his | :57:07. | :57:12.
long-term engineer. Things like, who is the daddy of Brazil? That is a | :57:13. | :57:27.
comment he has made to Massa before. He mentioned the accident he | :57:28. | :57:32.
suffered as his low point in 2009. Yields cemented the 2010 German | :57:33. | :57:36.
Grand Prix at Hockenheim and the words, Fernando is faster than you. | :57:37. | :57:44.
That was muttered by Smedley. It is clear that hurt him deeply. It was | :57:45. | :57:49.
his first chance to win a grand prix, having come back from his | :57:50. | :57:55.
accident. That was a key point in a relationship. He did not know ahead | :57:56. | :57:59.
of time that he would be told to move over. He might have had a good | :58:00. | :58:04.
idea but it was Rob who had to deliver the message. I know Rob was | :58:05. | :58:08.
not happy about that. He thinks the relationship between a race engineer | :58:09. | :58:13.
and the driver has to be one of complete trust. You have heard him | :58:14. | :58:18.
on the radio, the way he eggs him on and helps him. For him to deliver | :58:19. | :58:22.
that message was not what he wanted. It perhaps should have come | :58:23. | :58:26.
from higher up the chain. He should have told him in advance. He could | :58:27. | :58:32.
have gone out to dinner and told him and not do it in the middle of a | :58:33. | :58:38.
race. Team orders were not actually allowed. It did drop from Rory in | :58:39. | :58:42.
it. They are allowed now but, at that time, they were not allowed. -- | :58:43. | :58:50.
from Ari in it. That is true. Everybody knew what was going on. | :58:51. | :58:56.
Just to legitimise it, it did everyone a favour. It was the right | :58:57. | :59:01.
decision to allow team orders. They are going to happen anyway. It will | :59:02. | :59:10.
just be done in an under hand way. It is better that everyone knows it | :59:11. | :59:13.
is going on and you do not have two pretend. It is much better. There is | :59:14. | :59:18.
still talk that Rob Smedley will go to Williams. It may well be the | :59:19. | :59:23.
relationship is continued. I do not think if Rob Smedley goes to | :59:24. | :59:27.
Williams, it would not be exactly the same role. He would not be the | :59:28. | :59:33.
man on the radio. I think it would be another engineer working with | :59:34. | :59:38.
him. If he goes to Williams, it will be more bringing back the area of | :59:39. | :59:43.
development required. More of an infidel role between the two | :59:44. | :59:48.
drivers. Taking it back to the design office to try to make sure | :59:49. | :59:54.
the development direction is set correctly. It is so easy to develop | :59:55. | :59:57.
these cars. Instead of fixing the problem, sometimes you make it | :59:58. | :00:01.
bigger. You need a good link between the circuit and the factory. | :00:02. | :00:10.
That is something to look forward to, in 2014, this weekend, of | :00:11. | :00:16.
course, Heikki Kovalainen standing in for Kimi Raikkonen, for the final | :00:17. | :00:21.
time, we will wait to see whether Heikki Kovalainen does get a drive | :00:22. | :00:26.
for the 2014 season, definitely in negotiations with crate ram about | :00:27. | :00:29.
that possibility, but -- Caterham about that possibility but nothing | :00:30. | :00:35.
has been decided. Sergio Perez, he is on his way out of McLaren, it is | :00:36. | :00:40.
likely he will end up at one of the other team, he hasn't done a bad job | :00:41. | :00:47.
for McLaren, he is nine all in with Jenson Button, so it is possible if | :00:48. | :00:51.
he can get one over Jenson he could emerge with a better qualifying | :00:52. | :00:56.
record with Button after their one season together. The thing is the | :00:57. | :01:01.
team thinks that Jenson qualifying is not his great strength either. I | :01:02. | :01:05.
know when they compared him with Lewis they would say he was three or | :01:06. | :01:15.
four tenths off. Radio radio if the track is wet enough... A lot of the | :01:16. | :01:20.
lack of running is protect these valuable resource, the wet Thaiings | :01:21. | :01:24.
they have. So going back to that qualifying situation, you know, they | :01:25. | :01:29.
knew that Jenson isn't the quickest qualifier in the world. Sergio would | :01:30. | :01:34.
be a couple of tenths off Jenson. For a McLaren driver it is not quick | :01:35. | :01:39.
enough. McLaren are looking for stand out driverings, they always | :01:40. | :01:42.
have done. He hasn't done a bad job but just not good enough. That is is | :01:43. | :01:49.
right. We are looking inside the Toro Rosso pit, and Sebastian Vettel | :01:50. | :01:52.
has been sitting out this session, until now, I wonder if he is going | :01:53. | :01:57.
to be able to go out and do some lap, he has gone out the back of the | :01:58. | :02:02.
garage, so maybe he is prepared to go out on circuit, as Esteban | :02:03. | :02:05.
Gutierrez goes to the point where they can do their practise starts. | :02:06. | :02:10.
It is a clearly defined area, right on the exit of the pit lane, so they | :02:11. | :02:14.
are out of everybody's way, so he will set all the parameters up and | :02:15. | :02:18.
then, launch himself from that part, and away goes the car, with | :02:19. | :02:23.
relatively minimal amount of fuss, not fish tailing down the straight | :02:24. | :02:28.
at all, but pulling away nice and smoothly, and Gutierrez one of only | :02:29. | :02:32.
two cars on track at the moment. Yes, Sergio Perez has just come back | :02:33. | :02:37.
in to the pit lane. Christian, I think is joining us again from the | :02:38. | :02:43.
pit wall. Christian Horner. We have some radio. Radio radio can't get | :02:44. | :02:48.
away. So Hulkenberg reporting back. | :02:49. | :03:01.
Christian we haven't seen Sebastien doing very much. Is he too chilled | :03:02. | :03:05.
out to do any laps? No, we are at that stage on the track where it is | :03:06. | :03:09.
not quite wet enough for the full extremes and not dry enough for the | :03:10. | :03:14.
inters so it is that cross over period. He will be up before the end | :03:15. | :03:19.
of the session. We know there is a limitation of numbers of wets and | :03:20. | :03:23.
intermediates, so you have to save your laps at this early point. You | :03:24. | :03:27.
don't know what the rest of the weekend is going to bring. Yes with | :03:28. | :03:31.
the limitation of tyres, whatever we use we are burning from our | :03:32. | :03:34.
allocation from qualifying and race, so we have to be careful, it looks | :03:35. | :03:38.
like this weather could hang round for the next couple of day, woe | :03:39. | :03:43.
don't want to be burning tyres up today. We were talking about Daniil | :03:44. | :03:50.
Kvyat earlier, he did a good job this morning he was eighth fastest, | :03:51. | :03:54.
I don't know if you have had a chance to look at that and see that, | :03:55. | :03:58.
pretty impressive his first time in the wet Considering his age and | :03:59. | :04:02.
experience to get in a Grand Prix car in the wet round here and do, | :04:03. | :04:06.
the track he has never seen before, do what he did was very impressive. | :04:07. | :04:09.
You can see he is not afraid of the car in any way, he is throwing it | :04:10. | :04:14.
round, he has plenty of car control. It was an impressive performance. He | :04:15. | :04:20.
is a confident young guy, I was impressed with how he came across to | :04:21. | :04:25.
us, talking of Daniel Ricciardo, who will be joining you next year, do | :04:26. | :04:29.
you keep an eye on his performances over the last few race weekends, are | :04:30. | :04:32.
you looking over there to see what he is up to? Very much so. Always | :04:33. | :04:37.
looking for the reassurance you have made the right decision and | :04:38. | :04:40.
absolutely have had that confirmed by the way he Hazard driven since we | :04:41. | :04:45.
announced his signing, and the Toro Rosso is a tricky car, and he has | :04:46. | :04:49.
managed to get it into the top ten on so many occasion, now, and pull | :04:50. | :04:54.
it out the bag, particularly in qualifying. What will be the plan | :04:55. | :05:00.
now with Daniel? I know you have said that Sebastien deserves a good | :05:01. | :05:03.
holiday and the commitment it takes to win a Championship is massive. He | :05:04. | :05:08.
needs a break. Does Daniel spend a lot of time at the factory and do a | :05:09. | :05:13.
lot of simulator running? For sure, he will finish off his commitments | :05:14. | :05:17.
to Toro Rosso, and then he will come to Milton Keynes to spend some time | :05:18. | :05:21.
on the simulator, then he is off for a trip to the Philippines to drive a | :05:22. | :05:26.
rally show car for a couple of day, and then that is all the | :05:27. | :05:30.
requirements for him for December. And then it all starts off soon in | :05:31. | :05:35.
January because the new cars will be out on track at the beginning of the | :05:36. | :05:40.
month. Absolutely, it is a short winter. It is only two months today | :05:41. | :05:45.
that the new cars will be running in jer ret. It is a busy time back at | :05:46. | :05:51.
the factory. A huge amount to do. Particularly with the regulation | :05:52. | :05:55.
change. Will people be working at the factory on Christmas Day? | :05:56. | :05:59.
Probably. I think we might have to cancel Christmas this year. There | :06:00. | :06:03.
will be a night shift in on Christmas night. The effort that | :06:04. | :06:08.
goes in in in the factory is the reason we manage to achieve what we | :06:09. | :06:11.
do track side. This year it has been remarkable, the level of effort and | :06:12. | :06:15.
commitment that has gone in behind the scene, you know, but burning the | :06:16. | :06:19.
midnight oil in Milton Keynes. They will call you Scrooge if you cancel | :06:20. | :06:27.
Christmas Day. There will be a very good Christmas party. Thank you. So | :06:28. | :06:32.
Hulkenberg being pushed back into the pit, into the garage, he is | :06:33. | :06:37.
fifth fastest in this session, we have under half an hour to go. Gary, | :06:38. | :06:40.
back do you in the pit lane, presumably it is all fairly quiet | :06:41. | :06:46.
down there, in terms of setting the cars up, very lit that will the | :06:47. | :06:49.
teams tend to do, as something special. When you get into | :06:50. | :06:52.
qualifying you can't change the car, it is worth on a day like this | :06:53. | :06:57.
playing with special wet set ups? It depend on how confident you are on | :06:58. | :07:02.
your forecast. In reality, somebody seems to be floating round a bit. | :07:03. | :07:05.
This circuit is quite strange, because if it is wet you get a lot | :07:06. | :07:10.
of flooding, you need the car to be higher out of the groan. If it | :07:11. | :07:14.
becomes dry you lose performance, you have to believe in your weather | :07:15. | :07:20.
forecast, just look at Lewis's car, the front brake ducts, this is a | :07:21. | :07:25.
left hand circuit. That means the right front tyre gets a lot of work. | :07:26. | :07:31.
This right front brake, we call it a dustbin. It covers the brake disk. | :07:32. | :07:36.
It stops it getting into the rim. That is important, during the race | :07:37. | :07:43.
it easy to overheat the tyres. You want to get the temperatures in as | :07:44. | :07:49.
quickly as possible. So if you see on the right front wheel, you will | :07:50. | :07:53.
see the disk is covered, on the left front wheel you will see at the top | :07:54. | :07:56.
there is a couple of hole, that is because as I say, there is more left | :07:57. | :08:01.
hand corners than right hand corners so you have to keep more temperature | :08:02. | :08:06.
in the left front wheel and tyre because the circuit doesn't generate | :08:07. | :08:10.
that temperature. If you don't keep that, try and even them, when you | :08:11. | :08:14.
get to the braking zone you will lock the left front tyre up. So you | :08:15. | :08:21.
are playing round with shuch small things to get a good balance and | :08:22. | :08:25.
these conditions in the wet doesn't allow them to get the best out of | :08:26. | :08:28.
that. So that is the big compromise of having a wet session and going | :08:29. | :08:34.
into the race on Sunday teple -- potentially blind. It seems | :08:35. | :08:37.
something they have worked hard orange analysing tyre temperatures | :08:38. | :08:40.
and working out a way of balancing them For the last three to four | :08:41. | :08:44.
years they have had a problem on using the require tyrings too | :08:45. | :08:48.
aggressively. They have had a quick car, when you use the tyre | :08:49. | :08:52.
aggressively that means you get the temperature in quickly, after that, | :08:53. | :08:57.
if you can't stabilise that it overheats. So they have a lot of | :08:58. | :09:01.
pole positions because the tyre would warm up faster but in the race | :09:02. | :09:05.
they would go backwards. That is the area they have had to work on. The | :09:06. | :09:12.
car itself as far as aerodynamics has been small. But the mechanical | :09:13. | :09:16.
set up and how they work the rear tyrings has been the big challenge. | :09:17. | :09:21.
-- tyres. If the rear tierings goes away, you | :09:22. | :09:25.
can't get out of the corner, so it is a major problem. Jules Bianchi | :09:26. | :09:29.
has been impressing us request his car control. Some lovely slides as | :09:30. | :09:35.
he continues to get a few more laps in, he has done nine laps so far, I | :09:36. | :09:39.
think Nico Hulkenberg has done most, he has done 11 but there are a | :09:40. | :09:44.
number of have done none. Maldonado is about to complete his flying lap | :09:45. | :09:49.
but we have Felipe Massa, Hamilton, Sutil and Ven who have not completed | :09:50. | :09:55.
a lap. Rosberg is fastest on that single Labour Party. The rain as you | :09:56. | :10:00.
can see is still fallling, whether current -- Webber currently second | :10:01. | :10:05.
fastest. Grosjean is up there in third. Daniel Ricciardo in fourth, | :10:06. | :10:10.
Hulkenberg. Gutierrez, Kovalainen getting on with his job as stand in | :10:11. | :10:15.
for Kimi Raikkonen. Paul di Resta is eighth. Let us look back at Jules | :10:16. | :10:21.
Bianchi, this is Max Chilton sorry. This is the other Marussia. A wheel | :10:22. | :10:25.
on the curb going into the corner. Trying to run the outside line but | :10:26. | :10:32.
maybe getting carried away. He didn't mean to go quite that wide, I | :10:33. | :10:37.
think. As we said earlier, running round the outside of the track and | :10:38. | :10:41.
almost skirting the white line is often the quickest way, trying to | :10:42. | :10:45.
stay off the regular racing line that gets slick and slippery, so Max | :10:46. | :10:50.
Chilton getting away with that moment, and a few more cars due to | :10:51. | :10:54.
come out. Maldonado has set a lap time. He is quicker than Charles Pic | :10:55. | :11:00.
but not as quick as Giedo van der Garde. We will see how that changes | :11:01. | :11:05.
over the next few laps, Valtteri Bottas is tenth quickest in his | :11:06. | :11:08.
Williams, so Maldonado trying to find more pace there, but as I say, | :11:09. | :11:14.
the conditions different now to what they were in the Martin | :11:15. | :11:18.
Erlandssonier part of the session. Joining news the commentary box, it | :11:19. | :11:24.
is a bit of a climb up the staircase to our BBC position, is motor sport | :11:25. | :11:31.
director of Pirelli. It has not been a day you wanted. You have prototype | :11:32. | :11:36.
tyres and you have had virtually no chance, I know Sebastien did put | :11:37. | :11:41.
them on the car briefly, was there any kind of thing they could learn | :11:42. | :11:45.
from that? Absolutely nothing. We haven't had a lot of rain this year, | :11:46. | :11:49.
last year we had a lot, many races we haven't had the rain. We will | :11:50. | :11:56.
just listen here. Radio radio how are the conditions? | :11:57. | :12:03.
So, we have a bit of improvement in lap time coming up from Gutierrez, | :12:04. | :12:10.
so coming back to it, you needed a dry tack to test the tyres for next | :12:11. | :12:13.
year, you haven't had it and they are using up some of their wet tyre | :12:14. | :12:18.
allocations for the weekend? Yes, well that, that happened a bit last | :12:19. | :12:22.
year when we came here and had the rain, but that is, nothing you can | :12:23. | :12:28.
do about it, is there. Just looking at the conditions an how the times | :12:29. | :12:32.
are changing, do you think there is any chance we will see intermediates | :12:33. | :12:36.
back on the cars before the end of the session? Having just walked | :12:37. | :12:40.
through, you know, through the paddock it is still raining lightly, | :12:41. | :12:44.
I don't think we will see that much of an improvement. There is a bit of | :12:45. | :12:49.
standing water round. That is the key in, I know we look at lap time | :12:50. | :12:53.
and cross over points for running the extreme wet it is the tyre you | :12:54. | :13:01.
need to run on. Yes that is the intermediate time tyre is like a cut | :13:02. | :13:06.
slick. Is good for damp conditions, when you have standing water you | :13:07. | :13:09.
need that full wet. Onboard with Fernando Alonso. He is on track at | :13:10. | :13:12.
last, we have been waiting for him to appear, and now he is out there. | :13:13. | :13:16.
Gary, you had a bit more to talk about with the tyre warmers. Talking | :13:17. | :13:21.
about tyres and Paul is up there. This is one of the new test tyres. | :13:22. | :13:26.
It a black side wall. Lotus have taken it out. It is pretty hot. | :13:27. | :13:31.
Looking at the wheel assembly while we have this opportunity, this is | :13:32. | :13:35.
the wheel nut, all the wheels have the wheel nut fitted. It doesn't | :13:36. | :13:40.
fall out. That is what they need to get into the low two second for | :13:41. | :13:47.
pit-stops. Inside here we will have have an expensive tyre valve. | :13:48. | :13:51.
Instead of having your little valve, you push on a dry brake coupling. | :13:52. | :13:59.
This is what holds a seven, so its will measure tyre temperature inside | :14:00. | :14:04.
that rim. So it will look at the tread of the tyre. So the team has | :14:05. | :14:11.
the data coming back to them. We can see some of these electric blankets. | :14:12. | :14:19.
This is a set of slick tyres. 110, 111 degrees. You have side wall and | :14:20. | :14:23.
tread. They are heating them up more or less the same S I would like to | :14:24. | :14:26.
take credit because many years ago I was the one that created separating | :14:27. | :14:30.
these two so you could warm the side wall up more, we warmed it up to 100 | :14:31. | :14:37.
degrees and the tread up to 60. We got more grip then, they feel the | :14:38. | :14:41.
need to warm the tyre up to the same thing, get ass much mass temperature | :14:42. | :14:44.
as possible. I am not sure that the end of the day gives you the best | :14:45. | :14:47.
grip, but I am not closely involved with it right now. What are your | :14:48. | :15:04.
thoughts? A few teams heat the sidewalk to higher than the trade. | :15:05. | :15:09.
You need to be careful. There might be a chemical reaction which could | :15:10. | :15:15.
change the properties of the tire. There are all sorts of things we | :15:16. | :15:25.
have been looking at. We are watching Fernando Alonso. He is on | :15:26. | :15:30.
the intermediate tyres. We wondered if anyone would try that. He is | :15:31. | :15:36.
going quite quickly at the moment. We will see if it is an improvement. | :15:37. | :15:42.
Just 20 minutes to go. Still a lot of water to be kicked up by the car | :15:43. | :15:53.
as it heads up the hill. Ten A31.1, puts him 10th fastest at the moment. | :15:54. | :16:05.
-- one: 31.1. Ferrari will be looking at, what are the limits of | :16:06. | :16:11.
intermediate tyres. What we have seen in the past is the transition | :16:12. | :16:17.
from the rain to the dry or vice versa. It is absolutely key. Let's | :16:18. | :16:28.
ride with him for a moment. Let's watch. We are going to come away | :16:29. | :16:30.
from that. You can see that Sebastian Vettel is getting ready to | :16:31. | :16:36.
come out on circuit. Maybe he is finding a line that works well with | :16:37. | :16:40.
the intermediate tyre. The intermediate tyre is proving to be | :16:41. | :16:45.
quite effective in the closing moments. He has a big twitch. That | :16:46. | :16:49.
is the price you could pay by going on the intermediates. That is always | :16:50. | :16:56.
the risk. Fernando Alonso is not too worried. He always performs well | :16:57. | :17:03.
when the conditions are changeable. He has been outstanding in those | :17:04. | :17:07.
sorts of situations. It is the mark of a great driver they can do that. | :17:08. | :17:14.
Let's take a look at the replay. You can see for yourself what it was | :17:15. | :17:19.
like. He got it a bit out of shape. He sorted it out quite nicely. Let's | :17:20. | :17:27.
take a look at it. The final right-handed hairpin of the infield | :17:28. | :17:33.
section. Then it is just trying to get the power down. He dealt with it | :17:34. | :17:38.
pretty well. Looking ahead to next year, we have been talking about the | :17:39. | :17:42.
rule changes. The cars will be very different with the power they are | :17:43. | :17:48.
producing with the V6 engines. How your preparations going for next | :17:49. | :17:57.
year? We do not see the new cars until everyone out in June as. The | :17:58. | :18:09.
main test will be in Bahrain. -- Jerez. We are doing another test in | :18:10. | :18:16.
December with the 2011 car. That is our last bit of preparation work for | :18:17. | :18:22.
next season. For us, we have the talk that everyone talks about with | :18:23. | :18:26.
potential wheel spin. We can control it. We had to make the compounds | :18:27. | :18:32.
tear resistant. When they are in those situations, we are not | :18:33. | :18:37.
shredding the service. We cannot be as aggressive as we have been this | :18:38. | :18:44.
year. Will the wet tyres changed? Drivers have commented on | :18:45. | :18:50.
improvements. Also the compounds have changed too tried to give | :18:51. | :18:55.
better grip. The gap is too big between intermediate and the full | :18:56. | :19:02.
wet tyre. That is pretty much what we are in at the moment. Alonso has | :19:03. | :19:11.
gone third. He is back in the pits. Massa is 11th fastest at the | :19:12. | :19:15.
moment. He will give us an idea of how much quit he can find. He uses a | :19:16. | :19:22.
bit of curb through the second part. Mark Webber is also on track. At | :19:23. | :19:30.
Caterham, it is all fairly quiet for Charles Pic. We are preparing in | :19:31. | :19:36.
case we need intermediates. Less than 20 minutes to go. I think a | :19:37. | :19:42.
crossover is not on the cards at the moment. It would also possibly | :19:43. | :19:47.
damage a set of wets which we need for the rest of the event. Let's see | :19:48. | :19:51.
how it goes with the track condition. That message was a few | :19:52. | :20:01.
moments ago. He is now being sent out on his intermediate tyre. Mark | :20:02. | :20:10.
Webber is on his intermediate tyre. There is another factor. If you use | :20:11. | :20:15.
a set of intermediates, they get replaced overnight. It is a set of | :20:16. | :20:21.
tyres, as you heard on the radio, they will get replaced this evening. | :20:22. | :20:26.
It is set they do not worry about losing. It is a free set. Is there a | :20:27. | :20:35.
discussion? We have talked about it in the past bit, particularly when | :20:36. | :20:42.
we have wet Friday. It is a problem to a certain extent of having more | :20:43. | :20:47.
wet tyres available. The wet tyre, generally speaking, does not wear | :20:48. | :20:53.
too much. You tend to do 30, 40 laps on a set. In race conditions, when | :20:54. | :20:59.
cars are on the circuit together, you get spray. In testing, it is one | :21:00. | :21:05.
of those, how often will you actually use it? The additional cost | :21:06. | :21:11.
is quite substantial, in terms of carrying a set around all year. | :21:12. | :21:18.
Close on two 600, 700,000 euros, to take tyres around the world who | :21:19. | :21:27.
might never use. Nico Hulkenberg is still on the ball wet tyre - the | :21:28. | :21:30.
extreme wet tyre. Just taking it gently as he builds up to a lap. We | :21:31. | :21:39.
are keeping an eye on his progress. They have had a very good latter | :21:40. | :21:43.
part to the season. That is interesting. He set a very fast | :21:44. | :21:49.
first sector and then backed off middle sector. Whether he will go | :21:50. | :21:54.
for another go at it on the full wets, we will wait and see. There is | :21:55. | :21:59.
Sebastian Vettel on the intermediate tyre. You say you are planning | :22:00. | :22:04.
another test before the end of this year. Do you know who that will be | :22:05. | :22:09.
with yet? We have asked all the teams to make a proposal. A number | :22:10. | :22:13.
have come back. We need to decide who that will be. Sebastian Vettel | :22:14. | :22:32.
goes on to the lap. Let's watch to see how he gets on. Red Bull had a | :22:33. | :22:37.
good record on this circuit. He has had one victory and Mark Webber has | :22:38. | :22:46.
had two. Webber went on to win on that occasion. Three wins leading up | :22:47. | :22:52.
to last year but they could not make it four in a row. That'll is up on | :22:53. | :22:58.
the first sector. Straightaway, Sebastian Vettel on the | :22:59. | :23:03.
intermediates and looking good. Now he is heading up to turn six and | :23:04. | :23:10.
seven. It keeps tightening up. Downhill slightly into the downhill | :23:11. | :23:19.
left-handed hairpin. Very slippery through here as we see from some of | :23:20. | :23:26.
the guys. Then into the final quick left-hand down the hill. -- | :23:27. | :23:36.
left-hander down the hill. There is a big steep hill. We are at altitude | :23:37. | :23:41.
which has an effect on the engine horsepower. It is easy enough to | :23:42. | :23:48.
spin those wheels as they head up the hill. Let's see the lap time for | :23:49. | :23:57.
Sebastien battle. -- Sebastian Vettel. It puts him faith. A | :23:58. | :24:02.
representative time for him. Rosberg is still quickest. We had to say | :24:03. | :24:07.
Mercedes are looking pretty good. They were quick this morning. The | :24:08. | :24:14.
time by Rosberg earlier on is still holding up. Still a good lap. It | :24:15. | :24:21.
seems the intermediate is very good in the first sector. It loses a | :24:22. | :24:25.
little bit out in the second sector and then re-games. We are trying to | :24:26. | :24:32.
find a line. You see a lot in the second sector. Alonso is struggling | :24:33. | :24:38.
a little bit on the standing water. He is still going out on the | :24:39. | :24:42.
corners. I do not know the weather forecast for Sunday. It is changing | :24:43. | :24:46.
by the minute. The fact they are all out on the track and doing laps, | :24:47. | :24:50.
there is a feeling there might be more rain to come at the weekend. | :24:51. | :24:55.
And very slight difference in diameter between intermediate and | :24:56. | :25:00.
wet tyres. They are trying to lift the tyre of the ground. Probably not | :25:01. | :25:13.
enough sometimes. The cars are still low. Here, in particular, you get | :25:14. | :25:22.
Hollywood style rain. It chucks it down all of a sudden. You are | :25:23. | :25:28.
right. I walked over now. It started raining and it comes down very | :25:29. | :25:32.
quickly. No matter the tyres, you end up with the plank skating across | :25:33. | :25:42.
the water surface and the guy is a passenger. What is the weather | :25:43. | :25:50.
forecast? It is pretty good. Everyone has a different version. It | :25:51. | :25:54.
could be fun and adds spice into the mix. We always like a race like | :25:55. | :26:00.
that. Thank you for telling us what is going on out there. What about | :26:01. | :26:05.
conditions for you down in the pit lane at the moment? Is the rain | :26:06. | :26:11.
still falling as heavily? It is. It has not changed in the past half an | :26:12. | :26:16.
hour. The drops are heavy. It will be interesting. I remember the last | :26:17. | :26:25.
race in 2003 and the rain will stop anything can happen when it comes to | :26:26. | :26:37.
the race if it is raining. The result of that race went to a | :26:38. | :26:40.
hearing. That is something I would like to thank Mark Webber four. He | :26:41. | :26:46.
helped us as well. We have just seen a spin from Lewis Hamilton. Not a | :26:47. | :26:56.
crash but a complete 360. Mark Webber crashed and then Alonso | :26:57. | :27:02.
crashed into his debris, didn't he? He did. The race got stopped. It got | :27:03. | :27:08.
stopped on Lap 54. We filled the car with your. Everybody got fed up with | :27:09. | :27:17.
the race. Lo and behold we were leading the race at the time. Very | :27:18. | :27:23.
appreciative to Mark Webber and Fernando Alonso. Seeing them | :27:24. | :27:26.
slipping and sliding around at the moment with just over seven and a | :27:27. | :27:38.
half minutes to go. He wants a low less front wing. Still changes and | :27:39. | :27:53.
-- on the last lap. Sebastian Vettel has gone second. If it is wet this | :27:54. | :27:57.
weekend, no doubt the Mercedes seems to be in good shape. Hamilton is | :27:58. | :28:03.
having the odd moment out on track. He might be able to string out a | :28:04. | :28:07.
quick lap on the final session. He is on a quick lap at the moment. He | :28:08. | :28:12.
will improve from where he is, which is 21st. I am not sure how far up | :28:13. | :28:17.
the order he will go. Sebastian Vettel is half a second up on the | :28:18. | :28:23.
best so far of Rosberg. This could be a change from him now. I think he | :28:24. | :28:28.
will lose the top spot. Here comes Sebastian Vettel. Does he go | :28:29. | :28:37.
quickest? Yes, he does, by seven tenths of a second. That is quite a | :28:38. | :28:44.
margin. Downforce is still king. If it is wet or dry, if your car has | :28:45. | :28:49.
more downforce, you will have more grip. The more downforce you have, | :28:50. | :28:54.
the more confidence the driver gets. Right now it is still wet | :28:55. | :29:00.
weather tyre time. That all has gone out on the intermediate. Some hairy | :29:01. | :29:06.
moments. I am sure they can beat that time right now. Lewis Hamilton | :29:07. | :29:12.
did not improve massively. I thought he was going to. He is still down in | :29:13. | :29:18.
20th initially. About three tenths down in the first sector compared | :29:19. | :29:22.
with the time by Sebastien battle. Let's see what he does in the second | :29:23. | :29:26.
sector. He is trying to get the power down. It looks fun when they | :29:27. | :29:34.
go sideways but it normally means they are losing some time. In the | :29:35. | :29:38.
middle sector, it is seven tenths down on the best we have seen from | :29:39. | :29:43.
Sebastian Vettel. He still has his supporters - Lewis Hamilton. He has | :29:44. | :29:48.
only had one podium finish in Brazil in the past. He has never had a race | :29:49. | :29:54.
victory. He is bird. Certainly more competitive. He is three tenths | :29:55. | :30:02.
slower than his team-mate. -- bird. A big slide I Pastor Maldonado. He | :30:03. | :30:12.
carries on in the Williams. Where is he? He is 21st at the moment. Jenson | :30:13. | :30:19.
Button has not done anything representative. He has done a slow | :30:20. | :30:24.
timed lap. Jensen is not bothered about going out and impressing | :30:25. | :30:28.
people in the rain. He has done that several times in the past. He won | :30:29. | :30:33.
last year in wet and dry and does not need to show what he can do. | :30:34. | :30:37.
Hamilton has gone fast in the first sector. This crash helmet has been | :30:38. | :30:46.
designed for Lewis Hamilton. He had just gone fastest in the first | :30:47. | :30:49.
sector. That has now gone to Mark Webber by the way. All changing here | :30:50. | :30:54.
as the track conditions definitely do seem to be improving a little | :30:55. | :30:59.
bit. Sebastian Vettel also seeing what he can do on the intermediate | :31:00. | :31:04.
tyre. We could see a few more changes in the closing moments. Who | :31:05. | :31:08.
knows? It might be the same situation in qualifying tomorrow. It | :31:09. | :31:11.
might be a session where the track is trying up a little bit and it is | :31:12. | :31:15.
this kind of last-minute lap that counts. We saw a similar situation | :31:16. | :31:21.
at 's bar. Lewis Hamilton snatched pole position on that occasion. | :31:22. | :31:30.
The two Red Bulls are trading fastest laps. We still have one more | :31:31. | :31:36.
practise to go on Saturday morning. Yes, faster again, 1: 27.5. The | :31:37. | :31:44.
intermediate tyres go well. L.. Red Bull one, two, there is a surprise. | :31:45. | :31:48.
Going ahead of Rosberg, who has pushed down to third and Jean-Eric | :31:49. | :31:53.
Vergne who has don a good lap. He has gone up to fourth fastest as | :31:54. | :32:00.
Jenson Button will come out on the intermedia tyre. Nicely heated up. | :32:01. | :32:05.
So if he can get a bit out on to track and keep the tyre temperature, | :32:06. | :32:09.
he should be able to put a one more lap before the end here. Onboard | :32:10. | :32:12.
with Fernando Alonso. Let us see what this lap is going to be like | :32:13. | :32:17.
for Fernando, he is eighth at the moment. | :32:18. | :32:25.
And, yes, he is fifth now, so a slight improvement, for the Ferrari | :32:26. | :32:28.
driver, Jean-Eric Vergne still another good lap, so they will be | :32:29. | :32:31.
keeping an eye on him. You can see there is a sort of line round the | :32:32. | :32:35.
track now, that as long as they can stay on that line, they miss the | :32:36. | :32:39.
worst of the standing water, and that is what they are desperately | :32:40. | :32:44.
trying to do here as they continue round. Heikki Kovalainen is ninth | :32:45. | :32:49.
fastest, his tame mate Romain Grosjean is tenth. So competitive | :32:50. | :32:53.
between the two. Bit of an opportunity for Kovalainen to show | :32:54. | :32:56.
what he can do in changeable conditions. | :32:57. | :32:58.
Always nice to have that opportunity. | :32:59. | :33:05.
Who else is on a quick lap? Rosberg, 21.9. So Rosberg having seen what | :33:06. | :33:09.
the Red Bulls are doing has gone back to to see if he request | :33:10. | :33:14.
improve. Hamilton is down in seventh but has completed a slow lap. He has | :33:15. | :33:20.
done a good first sector Hamilton. So it could be that both Mercedes | :33:21. | :33:23.
are going to show something in the final couple of moments. Jenson | :33:24. | :33:27.
Button is trying to position him for one lap here, I think, pasted by | :33:28. | :33:32.
Felipe Massa, in the Ferrari, Massa is down in 18th but this lap will | :33:33. | :33:37.
improve his position, I am sure. -- passed. Let us see where this brings | :33:38. | :33:42.
him. Bottas has moved #u7, he is up to 14th vament. We Valtteri | :33:43. | :33:47.
Bottasment we saw what he can do in the damp in Canada. Maldonado has | :33:48. | :33:53.
been off track, I think, again, but has continued at turn one. Rosberg | :33:54. | :33:57.
goes fastest again, so just after Red Bull seem to have the edge, now | :33:58. | :34:02.
Rosberg goes quickest of all. Let us see what Vettel is doing. First | :34:03. | :34:08.
sector reasonable, but not as quick as Rosberg's. Who else is on a quick | :34:09. | :34:13.
lap? Let us keep an eye on it. Hamilton? He has backed off mid lap. | :34:14. | :34:19.
He had a good first sector and now he has backed off. Sliding round for | :34:20. | :34:25.
Vettel. Let us see what the lap is as he comes round to complete it. | :34:26. | :34:29.
The flashing red lights obligatory in the wet. That shows you, that lap | :34:30. | :34:38.
of 27.6. That is his second best lap. | :34:39. | :34:42.
So consistent lap times but not enough to beat Nico Rosberg, who | :34:43. | :34:47.
seems to be very rapid in these conditions. | :34:48. | :34:50.
The Mercedes will be praying for rain based on what we are seeing | :34:51. | :34:54.
right now. Tony, we saw Mercedes quick in the early part of this year | :34:55. | :34:58.
in wet conditions and it looks like they are repeating that It looks | :34:59. | :35:05.
very promising for them. 27.3, 27.5 and then you would expect Hamilton | :35:06. | :35:10.
will improve. So if you have these conditions for the race, yes, they | :35:11. | :35:15.
are in it. The problem is you never get consistent conditions. It is | :35:16. | :35:21.
bone dry, teeming rain, very rarely you get consistently wet or dry | :35:22. | :35:26.
here. Let us see, with the flag out what changes there might be. | :35:27. | :35:29.
Kovalainen has gone fourth. Very good lap from him, Romain Grosjean | :35:30. | :35:32.
is on the circuit. There could be a few changes I think on this very | :35:33. | :35:37.
last lap. Just as it dries up a fraction, so anybody could topple | :35:38. | :35:50.
Rosberg from the top. Eighth place for Fernando Alonso. Romain | :35:51. | :35:53.
Grosjean, he will Ros cross the line in a moment. Hamilton, keep an eye | :35:54. | :35:58.
on him, so Grosjean is ninth. Hamilton has moved up to fifth, so | :35:59. | :36:02.
that is a good improvement, but he is a way off his team-mate. Nico | :36:03. | :36:07.
Rosberg, some eight tenths away from Rosberg, the pace setter, what about | :36:08. | :36:11.
Mark Webber, can he do something? I don't think he has enough in hand, | :36:12. | :36:15.
no, he is third fastest, that is an improvement in lap time but it keeps | :36:16. | :36:20.
him thirdment only a fraction behind his team-mate. -- third. I think | :36:21. | :36:23.
that is most people across the line. Yes, look at that. All the chequered | :36:24. | :36:30.
flags are out and it is Rosberg who has therefore ended up topping both | :36:31. | :36:35.
sessions here today. Fastest in free practise one, fastest in free | :36:36. | :36:41.
practise two as well. 1: 27.3. He likes a good start to the weekend | :36:42. | :36:45.
and it means that Mercedes are going to be a threat to Red Bull if the | :36:46. | :36:48.
conditions are as we have seen them today. But Red Bull were second and | :36:49. | :36:54.
third fastest, only a bit off what Rosberg did. Kovalainen did a good | :36:55. | :36:59.
job to go fourth fastest. Several places ahead of Romain Grosjean. | :37:00. | :37:03.
Hampton was fifth in the end. Jean-Eric Vergne another outstanding | :37:04. | :37:08.
effort by the French driver with 1: 28.4. He could do with a surprise | :37:09. | :37:12.
performance to go into the winter on a high. Hulkenberg eighth, then | :37:13. | :37:19.
Daniel Ricciardo ninth. Grosjean 10th. Fernando Alonso was 11th. | :37:20. | :37:24.
Gutierrez was 12th. Di Resta was 13th ahead of Maldonado who | :37:25. | :37:28.
improved. Sutil 15th. Bottas was 16th, ahead of Perez, then Bianchi | :37:29. | :37:37.
was fastest, ahead of Giedo van der Garde, Pic and John Hutton -- Jenson | :37:38. | :37:41.
Button who never did a full flying lap. But not quite what you would | :37:42. | :37:47.
have expected. So that an been an intriguing practise session. Thanks | :37:48. | :37:53.
to the guests we have had. Thanks to Tony as well, let us get | :37:54. | :37:58.
back down to the paddock now. Thank you. A difficult session to | :37:59. | :38:05.
learn too much from, what we do know is Hamilton's ability to get out of | :38:06. | :38:10.
a jam is impressive as ever. It is funny, he goes round so quickly, he | :38:11. | :38:15.
hasn't got time to put the steering lock on. That is a very long corner | :38:16. | :38:19.
an you accelerate round it. It sucks you into get on the lot toing too | :38:20. | :38:25.
early. He has had do errors there, so he doesn't want to have a third | :38:26. | :38:30.
one. Fingers crossed we will have better conditions for FP 36789 in | :38:31. | :38:33.
qualifying but here you never know what is going to to happen. Make | :38:34. | :38:37.
sure you join us for the next session, live tomorrow, 12.55 on BBC | :38:38. | :38:44.

will see you very soon. | :38:55. | :38:56. |
