Hello and welcome to practice 3 from Interlagos. The rain continues to

:00:59.:01:07.

fall. No change from yesterday. The weather is set to get worse over the

:01:08.:01:11.

weekend. We could see our first and final wet race of the 2013 Formula

:01:12.:01:15.

One season. As we all know, the constructors championship has been

:01:16.:01:18.

won by Red Bull an the drivers championship has been won by

:01:19.:01:21.

Sebastien Vettel for the fourth consecutive time. But there's plenty

:01:22.:01:24.

to play for away from those headlines. In the Drivers

:01:25.:01:27.

Championship, Sebastien Vettel won. Nervous times at the bottom of the

:01:28.:02:01.

table where every place and penny counts. In the pit lane today,

:02:02.:02:05.

braving the rain we have Jenny and Tom. It was a frustrating day for

:02:06.:02:09.

Pirelli yesterday. They now have to switch their attentions to

:02:10.:02:13.

qualifying. What can we expect in practice 3? It was a hugely

:02:14.:02:17.

frustrating day for them. You're right. They brought their tray

:02:18.:02:24.

weather 2014 -- their dry weather 2014 prototype to give the team some

:02:25.:02:28.

experience of that rubber. They got no data at all because it was awful

:02:29.:02:35.

weather all day. Doesn't look like we will get any dry running in this

:02:36.:02:42.

session. The rain continues to fall. It's cold, overcast. There's rain

:02:43.:02:46.

and puddles everywhere. The guys have been sweeping those away this

:02:47.:02:49.

morning to try and clear this very sodden pit lane. You guys are brave.

:02:50.:02:55.

This is where the fair weather TV presenters stand under this lovely

:02:56.:03:00.

bridge. Nico Rosberg was fastest yesterday. The last time he did that

:03:01.:03:05.

was in Monaco when he went on to win the Grand Prix. Is this wishful

:03:06.:03:10.

thinking? Surely Sebastien Vettel must be favourite and he has big

:03:11.:03:14.

favourites on his mind? Yes, he wants to win nine races in a row. He

:03:15.:03:20.

wants to win 13 races in one season and match Michael Schumacher. He

:03:21.:03:25.

might have a battle in the wet. Nico Rosberg was fast in the two

:03:26.:03:32.

settings, and look being bag -- backing back over the year, Rosberg

:03:33.:03:36.

was quick in the wet in Australia. Hamren got -- Hamilton got pole

:03:37.:03:43.

position as well. The car works well in slippery conditions. But in these

:03:44.:03:48.

conditions anybody has a chance. It's not just Mercedes and -- that

:03:49.:03:56.

Red Bull have to keep an eye on. It's not all over yet. Time for the

:03:57.:04:00.

end of season photographs, though. Plenty of those going on through the

:04:01.:04:05.

weekend. Who knows how many personnel will move around. Plenty

:04:06.:04:08.

have already, during the season. In terms of the engineers and

:04:09.:04:11.

technicians, are we going to see quite a few more transfers between

:04:12.:04:16.

teams over the coming period? Or is it a quieter period in terms of

:04:17.:04:23.

recruitment? It does become a quieter time. They'd have heard

:04:24.:04:28.

about it now if anybody was moving. These guys have got longer term

:04:29.:04:34.

contracts. At the end of the day, if anything happens now, it would be

:04:35.:04:37.

mid-season next year before it has any influence. The ones that we know

:04:38.:04:41.

about have happened. There are a couple that we know about but can't

:04:42.:04:45.

talk about yet because they've not been released. It will have an

:04:46.:04:49.

influence on the top teams losing key personnel. There's always a lot

:04:50.:04:53.

of movement and a lot of rain here this morning. It is very, very wet.

:04:54.:04:57.

There will be quite a lot of standing water. Remind us on the

:04:58.:05:02.

situation with the tyres available - how many wet or intermediate tyres

:05:03.:05:06.

do they have available? You start Friday morning with four sets of

:05:07.:05:11.

intermediates and three sets of wets. If you use one set of

:05:12.:05:15.

intermediates on Friday, you get them replaced. So this session has

:05:16.:05:19.

four sets of intermediates, three sets of wets, one of which will have

:05:20.:05:23.

done some laps yesterday. This weather is wet weather tyres. I

:05:24.:05:28.

think, I doubt if you'll get to intermediate before the end of it or

:05:29.:05:32.

it will be just for a couple of laps because you want to save them for

:05:33.:05:35.

qualifying. Yes it's important to have fresh sets not only at

:05:36.:05:38.

beginning, but quite often at the end of a session. I was looking back

:05:39.:05:42.

at the wet sessions we've had this year, one of the ones that struck me

:05:43.:05:46.

was Malaysia where they were on slicks in Q1 and Q2, but on

:05:47.:05:53.

intermediates on Q3. This is Gutierrez doing a practice lap. At

:05:54.:05:59.

the final part of qualifying Sebastien Vettel took pole in the

:06:00.:06:03.

wet. McLaren and Mercedes stayed on one set of intermediates during the

:06:04.:06:08.

session. But they lost out because the intermediates had lost their

:06:09.:06:14.

hard edge. That edge makes all the difference. If you stay out there,

:06:15.:06:18.

you have temperature in the tyre but not the sharp corners that cut

:06:19.:06:22.

through the water. It's a decision to make and make it early. The end

:06:23.:06:27.

of the session comes at you quickly. This is nice seeing Felipe Massa

:06:28.:06:34.

autographing the guy's arm. He won't wash that ever, presumably. Some

:06:35.:06:39.

Ferrari fans would probably chop his arm off for that photograph. That's

:06:40.:06:42.

lovely to see and a great relationship that Felipe Massa has

:06:43.:06:46.

with that team. Tom, you're in the pit lane at the moment, but you were

:06:47.:06:51.

telling us yesterday that he really has been incredibly popular member

:06:52.:06:57.

of the team in that stint since 2006. You're absolutely right. In

:06:58.:07:01.

2003, when he started there as a test driver, he was very much under

:07:02.:07:10.

Barichello's wing. He was very open and honest with the team. That is

:07:11.:07:15.

the quality about Felipe Massa that the team admires so much. If he has

:07:16.:07:20.

a be legal with the car, he -- if he has a problem with the car, he says

:07:21.:07:24.

what he thinks. If he has a member of the team that is annoying him, he

:07:25.:07:29.

says that too. They love that honesty. It has been a fruitful

:07:30.:07:34.

relationship. He's been a team player, Gary. Sometimes to his

:07:35.:07:40.

disappointment, as he's mentioned, having to move out of the way of

:07:41.:07:44.

Fernando Alonso in 2010 was a key point. Massa has been a great team

:07:45.:07:50.

player. He has. Honesty is always the best virtue, as long as you're

:07:51.:07:54.

consistent, the team will respect you. I believe it's time for Ferrari

:07:55.:08:00.

to put in someone new. It's time for Massa to move on and get a new lease

:08:01.:08:05.

of life. He's going to Williams, bringing a mute -- multitude of

:08:06.:08:11.

experience. They have Bottas there. That combination could being very --

:08:12.:08:18.

could be very powerful. We're watching Esteban Gutierrez.

:08:19.:08:29.

He heads down out of that, it's a little downhill. It's steeper than

:08:30.:08:41.

it looks. It flattens out a touch on the next straight, then the last

:08:42.:08:45.

corner which leads to the fast, sweeping, well straight, but it

:08:46.:08:50.

keeps on curving through corners 13, 14, and 15. They're all given corner

:08:51.:08:54.

numbers on the official FIA map. Eventually it brings him past the

:08:55.:08:58.

pit lane exit there and across the line to complete a lap. Tom, I think

:08:59.:09:02.

you're at Lotus now? I am. I'm looking at Heikki

:09:03.:09:07.

Kovalainen who is sat on a toolbox at the back of the garage behind his

:09:08.:09:13.

car. His car is still on its jacks. As they started the car this morning

:09:14.:09:18.

some irregularities with the engine showed up. They've stripped the

:09:19.:09:21.

thing down in the last hour. They say they've found the problem.

:09:22.:09:24.

They're not having to replace the engine. But it will take them a

:09:25.:09:28.

while to get the floor back on and get the bits and pieces together. So

:09:29.:09:34.

a slow start to FP 3. He was fourth fastest in the second fastest

:09:35.:09:38.

section. Pictures of Gutierrez slipping and sliding. He's been

:09:39.:09:41.

pretty impressive in the wet conditions this year, even from his

:09:42.:09:45.

very first Grand Prix in Australia. Even though he lost control in

:09:46.:09:49.

qualifying. But he was fast up to that point. He's been a match for

:09:50.:09:54.

Hulkenberg in the wet conditions. Hulkenberg, his team-mate yesterday

:09:55.:09:58.

was eighth fastest. Gutierrez was 12th. Talking about the second

:09:59.:10:02.

practice session, the wetter of the two sessions. The first session in

:10:03.:10:05.

the morning had been that little bit drir and we saw a one, two on that

:10:06.:10:13.

occasion for Rosberg and Hamilton. Hamilton seemed less happy. Hamilton

:10:14.:10:24.

did 128. 1. We saw him yesterday making some mistakes. Lewis is one

:10:25.:10:28.

of those guys in the wet who loves those conditions. What he needs to

:10:29.:10:31.

do is get back to basics and make the car do one thing. The engineers

:10:32.:10:35.

will have tried to give him one thing rather than the car doing

:10:36.:10:39.

everything. I am sure this morning he will be up to speed. He's always

:10:40.:10:43.

going to be happy and there will be plenty of work done. He was saying

:10:44.:10:46.

that the throttle mapping didn't suit his driving style. That's

:10:47.:10:50.

something they can change. A lot of data will be absorbed. They'll look

:10:51.:10:54.

at the way he drives the car and presumably change the mapping. What

:10:55.:10:58.

does that mean, though? These engines produce a certain amount of

:10:59.:11:03.

torque at different throttle levels. You try to create a throttle map

:11:04.:11:09.

that's a smooth delivery. In a Formula One car the throttle peddle

:11:10.:11:15.

is called a torque pedal. 10% of throttle doesn't have to give you o

:11:16.:11:20.

10% of torque. It might give 5%. You can shape that. If you have a too

:11:21.:11:25.

flat a shape when the driver is trying to control through a corner,

:11:26.:11:28.

he gets to the top end of that and it has to rise. It must start at

:11:29.:11:32.

zero and end at 100%. If it does that, you have to play around with

:11:33.:11:35.

it to suit the driver. He didn't like it yesterday. He's driven in

:11:36.:11:40.

the wet before this car, so I'm surprised they don't have a good

:11:41.:11:43.

throttle map available. He said he struggled in the wet in Australia at

:11:44.:11:46.

the beginning of the year. Still seems to be a slight problem. Of

:11:47.:11:50.

course, that is another issue when you move from one team to another,

:11:51.:11:54.

someone like Rosberg has been in that team since 2010. He's helped

:11:55.:11:58.

develop that car. He's worked with Michael Schumacher, no doubt

:11:59.:12:02.

learning tips from him. Whereas Lewis is fresh this year. A few

:12:03.:12:05.

things like that. We heard he struggled with the braking on the

:12:06.:12:08.

car. It hasn't given him the confidence he's wanted. We heard in

:12:09.:12:11.

the wet that the car doesn't respond the way he wants. At McLaren he knew

:12:12.:12:16.

and understand the McLaren inside out. He came into Formula One with

:12:17.:12:24.

McLaren. He derived McLaren's ways. They were a family together. Then

:12:25.:12:30.

the divorce hand and he came to Mercedes. Sometimes your new wife

:12:31.:12:34.

doesn't do what you want. It takes time, but she will know what to cook

:12:35.:12:39.

for you for dinner when you get home. The relationship is still

:12:40.:12:42.

developing. Rosberg has been looking very impressive. Gutierrez, the only

:12:43.:12:51.

one to sett a lap time so far 1. 34. 6. Yesterday was in the 1. 27, 1.

:12:52.:12:59.

28. That shows how much wetter the circuit is. The forecast today is

:13:00.:13:03.

rain throughout. Showers on Sunday. We could end up with a wet race. Who

:13:04.:13:09.

knows what's going to happen. It's gone very quiet. There's not much

:13:10.:13:12.

happening on track at the moment. Most cars are in the pits, even if

:13:13.:13:16.

they have been on the circuit. Mark Webber is on the track at the

:13:17.:13:19.

moment. Esteban Gutierrez is still out there. We will keep an eye on

:13:20.:13:24.

him. Christian Horner joins us from the pit wall. Good morning. What is

:13:25.:13:29.

the programme for you guys this morning, going through what is the

:13:30.:13:34.

very wet free practice, how does this affect the normal programme

:13:35.:13:37.

into qualifying? Good morning, it's a wet one out here. Basically, the

:13:38.:13:42.

plan is for the drivers to get a feel for the car in these

:13:43.:13:46.

conditions. Obviously, it's extremely wet. Therefore, having to

:13:47.:13:50.

run on extremes. We have to be a bit careful that we don't burn too many

:13:51.:13:55.

tyres prior to qualifying. We will need them for qualifying and the

:13:56.:13:59.

race. We saw and we were discussing a moment ago, Gary Anderson is with

:14:00.:14:03.

me, you planned it well in Malaysia, that wags a wet qualifying -- that

:14:04.:14:08.

was a wet qualifying. You used two sets of tes in the final part of P

:14:09.:14:17.

3, effectively importantlying teams were wear -- effect other teams were

:14:18.:14:22.

wearing them too much. Will the intermediate lose its edge quickly?

:14:23.:14:26.

It's a pretty good tyre and has a reasonable range. Where it gets into

:14:27.:14:31.

trouble is as on as you -- as soon as you get dry patches around then

:14:32.:14:35.

it eats up the tyre quickly. If you have a car out of balance as well,

:14:36.:14:39.

that tends to do a lot of damage to the tyre. The intermediate you can

:14:40.:14:43.

run in pretty wet conditions. It will go a reasonable distance. The

:14:44.:14:48.

wet tyre, presumably once you've run the full wet, like this morning, it

:14:49.:14:52.

is so wet, you're not seeing much wear on the tyre itself, unless it

:14:53.:14:57.

starts to dry off? That's right. In conditions like this, the tyre, you

:14:58.:15:01.

can see Gutierrez at the moment, those tyres will come in and not

:15:02.:15:06.

look too bad. The water protects the tread block reasonably well. It's

:15:07.:15:10.

when you start to lose that water and put load and heat into the tyre,

:15:11.:15:16.

particularly through the faster corners, that's what does the

:15:17.:15:18.

damage. You have two drivers who have always performed well in wet

:15:19.:15:23.

conditions. I remember watching Mark come up through the ranks, very

:15:24.:15:29.

quick in the wet. Vettel took that amazing wet win with Toro Rosso in

:15:30.:15:35.

appalling conditions. Daniel Ricciardo, Jean-Eric Vergne, two

:15:36.:15:40.

younger guys, it looks as though Jean-Eric Vergne has had the edge in

:15:41.:15:43.

the wet so far this year have you seen that yourself? Yeah we've seen

:15:44.:15:48.

in through his career. In the wet he has hay tremendous feel. That was

:15:49.:15:54.

the thing which was so impressive about Daniel's performance

:15:55.:16:01.

yesterday. He was quicker than Jean-Eric Vergne. So coming back to

:16:02.:16:07.

that the Russian driver who is going to join Toro Rosso, you were

:16:08.:16:11.

suitably impressed? Massively impressed. He's done limited mileage

:16:12.:16:16.

in a Formula One car. He's jumped out of a GP3 car. The power is three

:16:17.:16:22.

times the power. To turn up at a circuit he's never seen before, in

:16:23.:16:26.

the wet, jump in and do the job he did was very impressive. Eighth

:16:27.:16:29.

fastest in the first practice session, very impressive indeed.

:16:30.:16:33.

Tell us what the team is forecasting, what your team

:16:34.:16:36.

forecasters are saying we are going to have for both qualifying and the

:16:37.:16:41.

race? Unfortunately, it looks fairly set, in the weather at the moment.

:16:42.:16:45.

It looks like this is here for a while. Then hopefully, if you

:16:46.:16:50.

believe the forecast, it looks grar tomorrow but a -- greyer tomorrow,

:16:51.:16:56.

but less rain. But the horrible drizzly showers which are a

:16:57.:16:59.

nightmare on the pit wall. Great for us watching. Thanks Christian.

:17:00.:17:02.

Thanks for joining us. We could be in for a changeable race like last

:17:03.:17:07.

year, a race won by Jenson Button, on ape clever strategy. -- on a

:17:08.:17:15.

clever strategy. He stayed out on slicks. It's that kind of call that

:17:16.:17:18.

Jenson Button is renowned for. He might have to use some of those

:17:19.:17:22.

talents again this weekend. Yes, it's very ease why toy make those

:17:23.:17:26.

decisions -- easy to make those decisions. You always want to get

:17:27.:17:30.

onto the quicker tyre. It's easy to get onto it too early. You lose

:17:31.:17:35.

those few seconds that are vitally important. Though your tyres are up

:17:36.:17:39.

and working to temperature at the time on the track, those come good

:17:40.:17:42.

enough. The seconds you lose are difficult to pull back. Watching ham

:17:43.:17:52.

-- Lewis Hamilton here. He was in a good position last time to win the

:17:53.:17:58.

race. But he tangled with Nico Hulkenberg. He has certainly shown

:17:59.:18:00.

his pace in the changeable conditions. I wonder if he will feel

:18:01.:18:05.

a bit happier with the car. He had a couple of spins yesterday, one long

:18:06.:18:11.

broadside and one complete 360 we saw. He comes straight back into the

:18:12.:18:15.

pits and it's only Esteban Gutierrez, so far, who has

:18:16.:18:19.

established a lap time. Let's look at the replace. A bit a lock up?

:18:20.:18:25.

Beautiful shots of the water coming off the tyres. Giving you an idea of

:18:26.:18:30.

airflow over the car as well? Yes, it does. The amount of water at the

:18:31.:18:35.

moment is heavy. It is changing the airflow dramatically. That's the big

:18:36.:18:38.

difference from the car in the dry to in the wet, the airflow is

:18:39.:18:43.

affected by the water. Whenever you see some of the ones with the

:18:44.:18:48.

vortexes coming off because of the moisture in the air, in the morning,

:18:49.:18:51.

that's more representative of the airflow. The water is a bit too

:18:52.:18:55.

heavy, so it changes the direction of the airflow quite dramatically.

:18:56.:18:59.

Now, you've been getting in touch all weekend using the #BBC F1. Great

:19:00.:19:08.

to have your involvement. Your highs and lows of the season. Let's go

:19:09.:19:12.

through those. Andrew priestly saying, "2013 F1 season will be

:19:13.:19:18.

remembered for Sebastien Vettel's consistent winning. Love him or hate

:19:19.:19:24.

him, you can't fault it." I think you're right. Another one says, "Red

:19:25.:19:28.

Bull winning the championship for the fourth year is her high. The low

:19:29.:19:34.

is Mark Webber leaving." He's going into his final event this weekend. I

:19:35.:19:39.

know many of you Mark Webber fans are sad to leave him go. Another one

:19:40.:19:47.

says the best moment is Bottas in the Williams scoring points. The

:19:48.:19:53.

worst moment and this is a good point, cameraman getting hit by a

:19:54.:20:02.

wheel at the Nurburgring. It's difficult rules have come about

:20:03.:20:06.

because of that. Yes, the wheel locking system, basically when these

:20:07.:20:12.

wheels go on, there's a central wheel nut. There's always been a

:20:13.:20:18.

locking mechanism. But now the rules have got changed. If the wheel nut

:20:19.:20:25.

doesn't come onto the thread, the toggles come out then. The teams

:20:26.:20:29.

have had to adapt to the systems they've got. Because not everybody

:20:30.:20:34.

wanted to make new axels, it's a hugely expensive component. It is an

:20:35.:20:38.

adaptation this year. We will see better solutions next year. You're

:20:39.:20:43.

in the pit lane, you're often in the pit lane, how has it been in terms

:20:44.:20:47.

of reducing the numbers of journalists in there? I think right

:20:48.:20:50.

now we've got it right. Whenever the rule was put in initially, there was

:20:51.:20:57.

probably too few. Then the second time there were too many. The

:20:58.:21:00.

numbers now, the pit lane is not as congested. You can see cars coming

:21:01.:21:05.

in, find places to get out of the way easier. Motor racing is

:21:06.:21:08.

dangerous. You have to be alert. You have to watch the way the cars are

:21:09.:21:13.

coming at you. So many inexperienced journalists and photographers down

:21:14.:21:16.

there are always looking in the wrong direction. Sometimes you have

:21:17.:21:19.

to either have somebody with you or make sure you're look being where

:21:20.:21:24.

the cars would come and hit you. Watching Heikki Kovalainen. Jenny,

:21:25.:21:27.

you have an update from Williams? Yes, they went out yesterday on of a

:21:28.:21:34.

dry mechanical set up. They weren't expecting the weather to be as bad

:21:35.:21:37.

as it is. Overnight they've reverted back to a wet set up and put on a

:21:38.:21:41.

few more bits to try and deal with that. They're expecting the weather

:21:42.:21:46.

to continue throughout today. We saw Valtteri Bottas have his best ever

:21:47.:21:50.

qualifying in Montreal in similar conditions to these, the spray was

:21:51.:21:53.

everywhere. It was very hard to see on track. Bottas really thrived in

:21:54.:21:59.

that situation. He's looking forward to those. They're going to try to

:22:00.:22:05.

get long runs in in this session to understand what the car can do in

:22:06.:22:09.

these conditions. They expect tomorrow's race to start in wet

:22:10.:22:18.

conditions. This -- that will have a huge beari because of the

:22:19.:22:22.

limitations in what you can change on the car into qualifying, not very

:22:23.:22:25.

much at all. Do the teams look at the weather and say right, we're

:22:26.:22:29.

going for a full wet set up? I think you'd have to. The weather forecasts

:22:30.:22:33.

that we've seen look like it is going to be partially wet tomorrow,

:22:34.:22:37.

maybe not as wet as today. You've got to bend towards that. You have

:22:38.:22:41.

to make sure you have the car covered in the wet. The other you

:22:42.:22:44.

can change tomorrow if it pops up and be dry, is the front wing angle

:22:45.:22:50.

and if the climatic conditions are different, if it is dry, they will

:22:51.:22:55.

allow you to change the engine cooling and brake ducting. Those are

:22:56.:23:00.

the only things. But you have to get that climatic condition change from

:23:01.:23:03.

the FIA before you can alter the cooling. Let's get back down to the

:23:04.:23:10.

pits now. Tom Clarkson is with Martin Whitmarsh.

:23:11.:23:13.

Good morning Martin, that rain dance you've been doing, seems to have

:23:14.:23:17.

paid off. It's pretty miserable out there. I think on balance, I'd

:23:18.:23:28.

rather it was raining tomorrow than today. Anything can happen in

:23:29.:23:34.

qualifying in these conditions. I want a wet Sunday afternoon, not

:23:35.:23:37.

necessarily Saturday. You don't always get what you want in this

:23:38.:23:41.

world. At the moment, as you can see, everyone is holding onto their

:23:42.:23:46.

tyres. Quite an abrasive surface, it's ease why I to take the edge off

:23:47.:23:51.

the tyres here. Everyone is doing an install. Gutierrez did timed laps. I

:23:52.:23:57.

don't think there'll be too much running because people just realise

:23:58.:24:05.

that you'll need fresh hopefully inters this afternoon. What sort of

:24:06.:24:09.

life were we seeing from the inters yesterday? I think the problem with

:24:10.:24:13.

the inters is that you take the edge off them quickly. You probably want

:24:14.:24:19.

to do your quick lap in the first one or two laps. Thereafter you

:24:20.:24:26.

progressively degrade. It people only use the one we have to give

:24:27.:24:29.

back yesterday. They were keeping their fresh sets for this afternoon.

:24:30.:24:34.

I think it was one of those things, if the track dries at all, the

:24:35.:24:39.

inters overheat so quickly on this circuit, they would be destroyed in

:24:40.:24:43.

a lap. I think at the moment, actually, this is full wet

:24:44.:24:49.

conditions. In qualifying, you want to go out on inters. The problem

:24:50.:24:54.

will be trying to stand on the pit wall or stand in the garage here and

:24:55.:24:58.

making a decision -- make a decision. Is it inter or full wet?

:24:59.:25:03.

Getting that right, avoiding the of traffic, getting the tyres

:25:04.:25:06.

temperature, all sorts of things. Having said that, it will probably

:25:07.:25:12.

throw up unexpected results for the grid, that will be interesting in

:25:13.:25:17.

the race. I quite like it to be wet in the race as well. Jenson said to

:25:18.:25:22.

us yesterday he's hopeful of a podium this weekend. What sort of

:25:23.:25:25.

shape are you in, do you think? Well, I think the last few races,

:25:26.:25:32.

we're not in the same race as Red Bull clearly. But we've been racing

:25:33.:25:37.

with fraries and -- Ferraris and Mercedes and Lotus, so we're a

:25:38.:25:43.

little bit closer. We need good fortunes, great driving to get on

:25:44.:25:47.

the podium. You don't give up. It would be nice to go for that. I

:25:48.:25:52.

think we need something unexpected to happen to really be in

:25:53.:25:57.

contention. Who knows. That's what ens. Normally, we're here with a

:25:58.:26:00.

competitive car and the last thing you want is rain. We've seen that so

:26:01.:26:07.

many times, but at championship critical points, where you think I

:26:08.:26:10.

don't want the uncertainty of a wet race and you get it. Tomorrow,

:26:11.:26:13.

knowing our luck, it will be dry. We'll' see. How much would a podium

:26:14.:26:19.

mean to you tomorrow or even a fourth place? This team has never

:26:20.:26:23.

not scored a fourth place since 1966, and your best result this year

:26:24.:26:29.

is fifth. I'm not an hiss torning. Getting up there -- historian.

:26:30.:26:36.

Getting up there means everything to this team. It's been a tough and

:26:37.:26:40.

long year. If we can get some reward, it hasn't quite come

:26:41.:26:43.

together in the last few races. I think we flattered in a few of the

:26:44.:26:47.

practice sessions but we didn't quite deliver. Who knows. Maybe

:26:48.:26:52.

something will go right this year. There's one race to go, but we keep

:26:53.:26:56.

fighting. Say it's during the hard times that you learn the most. What

:26:57.:27:01.

have you learned the most as a team this year? I'm immenly proud of the

:27:02.:27:06.

team. The drivers and the team here, we've been racing with a lot of

:27:07.:27:09.

pressure, a difficult, frustrating circumstance. The teams pulled --

:27:10.:27:17.

team's pulled together. You can sense tha Anyone around the team,

:27:18.:27:21.

you can sense the that the team is working well here. Our car isn't

:27:22.:27:24.

quick enough, we know that. There's a determination. I think back in

:27:25.:27:33.

Woking, I'm an optimist, so a quick up the backside is what you need. We

:27:34.:27:37.

have had that this year. In that environment you rethink how you make

:27:38.:27:42.

decisions, what things you're doing. We've been able to do that.

:27:43.:27:45.

Hopefully we're going to come out of this year stronger. I think we can.

:27:46.:27:49.

But, having said that, it's been a long one. I really look forward to

:27:50.:27:55.

next now. What percentage of the MTC is focussed onned 2014 or is there a

:27:56.:28:00.

little bit of you thinking Honda, 2015? Next year is an important

:28:01.:28:04.

year. Most of the focus is on 14, but we have a new partnership in 15.

:28:05.:28:10.

I think Mercedes will do a very good job next year. There's no excuses.

:28:11.:28:16.

There's no reason we can't go out there win and win a championship

:28:17.:28:21.

next year. We'd like to do that. Inevitably, there's an excitement

:28:22.:28:26.

about the longer term future. We'll try to focus on winning with

:28:27.:28:30.

Mercedes again. That would be the right thing to do. Thanks for your

:28:31.:28:34.

time. Good luck the rest of the weekend.

:28:35.:28:38.

We're on board with Lewis Hamilton in the Mercedes. He's going into the

:28:39.:28:44.

pits. He did a practice start. I've been looking back at the poor years

:28:45.:28:48.

for McLaren. 2004 they were only fifth in the championship as well. I

:28:49.:28:57.

was talking to David Coulthard about it. It was a tough season for them.

:28:58.:29:02.

Kimi Raikkonen, his team-mate that year, had hay second place finish in

:29:03.:29:07.

Brazil in a rain-affected race. Maybe thicks will -- things will

:29:08.:29:11.

come good for McLaren. 1983, they were fifth in the World

:29:12.:29:16.

Championship, the pre-Ron Dennis era. They were sixth in '81. John

:29:17.:29:24.

Watson was fourth in Long Beach and Canada. That was the year that Prost

:29:25.:29:29.

was with John Watson at McLaren in 1980. He was snatched by Renault at

:29:30.:29:33.

the end of the year. It was a year you just left McLaren, Gary? Yes, I

:29:34.:29:41.

did the first Test. I left just after it. It was one of those

:29:42.:29:47.

things, I wanted to work with Morris Dunn. Yeah, it was a difficult time

:29:48.:29:53.

for McLaren. The years before that really they never caught onto the

:29:54.:29:58.

ground effect cars. The car for 1980 was quite a good package, but it was

:29:59.:30:01.

a year too late because it didn't have the information. They were a

:30:02.:30:05.

year behind where they should be. You can see everybody trying to keep

:30:06.:30:09.

themselves dry. But there's always passion for Formula One in Brazil.

:30:10.:30:20.

We're at the Autodromo Carlos Pace stadium. You worked with Pace didn't

:30:21.:30:25.

you? Yes, it's quite nice. It's a long time ago now. It was one of the

:30:26.:30:29.

very good drivers. Unfortunately lost his life in an accident. One of

:30:30.:30:41.

those guys who drove cars quickly. They were similar people, dedicated

:30:42.:30:47.

to what they did but nice guys as well. 1975 he took the victory. The

:30:48.:30:53.

first ever winner here was a Brazilian as well Fitipaldi. He's

:30:54.:30:59.

written a beautiful piece on the McLaren website about his memories

:31:00.:31:04.

of Cena. Very well worth a look. Looking at it this morning, looking

:31:05.:31:08.

back at Cena. He knew him well and talks about how he knew him as a

:31:09.:31:13.

lad, met him here, when Cena was winning everything in carting. The

:31:14.:31:16.

cart track is right beside the main circuit here. He met him then and he

:31:17.:31:22.

introduced him to quite a lot of the Formula One teams. He introduced him

:31:23.:31:30.

to many team managers telling them all he was a future world champion.

:31:31.:31:34.

Maybe they didn't believe him at the time, but they learned he was right.

:31:35.:31:37.

It's interesting how the Brazilians stick together and help each other.

:31:38.:31:45.

I've known quite a few. I've known Emmerson, Massa, Berti, to be

:31:46.:31:53.

honest, Moreno, they all help each other at some point in time. They

:31:54.:31:56.

have enough experience to know how hard it is. They stick together as a

:31:57.:32:00.

nice club. Some other places we go to seem to try to make sure that the

:32:01.:32:05.

other guy doesn't get a chance. But the Brazilians Join Together and

:32:06.:32:08.

make it all happen. We have you in the car because the weather is

:32:09.:32:11.

changing. There could be a break any moment. We don't want to miss the

:32:12.:32:15.

chance to do any running. Just over half an hour to go in the final

:32:16.:32:19.

practice session. One of the stories this weekend is which team will

:32:20.:32:22.

finish 10th in the constructors battle? At the moment Marussia have

:32:23.:32:31.

the 10th place. Their race in Malaysia was affected by rain. Jules

:32:32.:32:36.

Bianchi got that place. That means they have 10th in the championship.

:32:37.:32:39.

Caterham are trying to beat them. It changed in the final race last year.

:32:40.:32:44.

Lets' see how they're feeling. Jenny is with Graham Lauden. Tense times

:32:45.:32:50.

this weekend and there's a lot riding on the result here. Well,

:32:51.:32:55.

there is, but it's another race. From the team's point of view that's

:32:56.:33:00.

how we have to treat it. We are always trying to beat the team next

:33:01.:33:06.

to us. We want to stay ahead of them now. Things can change, even with a

:33:07.:33:11.

few laps to go. We will race as hard as we can and see if we can stay

:33:12.:33:16.

ahead. Max Chilton in his car being fired up. That's the racket behind

:33:17.:33:20.

us. What have you said to Chilton and Bianchi about how to handle the

:33:21.:33:27.

pressure? They're professional drivers and they know exactly what

:33:28.:33:31.

they're doing. They don't need us to add anything. They want to did a

:33:32.:33:35.

really good performance every time they get in the car. I don't think

:33:36.:33:40.

there's anything we could say to change their approach. We wouldn't

:33:41.:33:44.

want to. We don't want them to feel any extra pressure at all. Was

:33:45.:33:49.

announced earlier on this season, the second place in the team stim a

:33:50.:33:54.

question mark over. Are things getting -- still a question mark

:33:55.:33:57.

over. Are things getting closer to Max? It's highly unlikely we will

:33:58.:34:02.

announce anything during FP3 session or qualifying or the race.

:34:03.:34:05.

Traditionally we have waited until the season is over. I think that's

:34:06.:34:09.

exactly how we're going to treat this season as well. I have to say I

:34:10.:34:13.

think both drivers have done an extremely good job. They're both in

:34:14.:34:17.

their rookie years. They've worked really well together. The whole team

:34:18.:34:22.

has had a great atmosphere, very competitive spirit in the team.

:34:23.:34:30.

That's what we will harness. We're standing in the noisiest place. Max

:34:31.:34:35.

Chilton is about to go on track. I wonder, this is the end of the

:34:36.:34:41.

Cosworth era, so say goodbye to a good partnership. Yes, a fantastic

:34:42.:34:45.

brand in Formula One. They've been around for a very long time. It's

:34:46.:34:53.

sad that there'll be a season without Cosworth. But they will be

:34:54.:34:57.

in Formula One. They provide more than just engines. But I'm sure we

:34:58.:35:02.

will see Cosworth engines again. Going forward, how hopeful are you,

:35:03.:35:08.

we approach 2014, we will move back wards actually, how hopeful are you

:35:09.:35:12.

that 2014, with the new regulations coming, can open a doorway to the

:35:13.:35:16.

younger, newer teams to try and beat some of the more established guys?

:35:17.:35:23.

For a team like us, we want to have regulation that's stay exactly the

:35:24.:35:27.

same to allow us to catch up the lost time because we're a newer

:35:28.:35:32.

team. Or some kind of radical change and one thing is for sure, the new

:35:33.:35:37.

power units offer a completely radical change. We see it as an

:35:38.:35:41.

opportunity. It's a huge technical challenge but one that we're up for.

:35:42.:35:48.

It's too noisy. Graham, thank you. You're welcome.

:35:49.:35:52.

Jules Bianchi is about to go out onto the circuit. Let's just watch

:35:53.:36:01.

him out. Yes, there he is on his way out. Christian Horner joins us again

:36:02.:36:04.

from the pit wall. It's a bit of a quiet day for you. Not much going on

:36:05.:36:08.

from a team point of view, I suppose. It's a bit quiet. There's

:36:09.:36:15.

supposed to be a hole in the rain at the moment. So I guess everybody is

:36:16.:36:19.

in the garage trying to save their extreme tyres because we don't have

:36:20.:36:23.

that many of them. Asking BBC viewers for their highs and lows of

:36:24.:36:29.

the 2013 season. Many of people are connected with your drivers, of

:36:30.:36:33.

course, Andrew says, "The best moment was Vettel's epic

:36:34.:36:36.

celebrations after winning the title in India." Tom saying, "The worst

:36:37.:36:41.

moment for him was Mark's too slow get him out of the way, the message

:36:42.:36:47.

on the Vettel radio." What are your highs and lows? Certainly the high

:36:48.:36:54.

of winning the championship in India was incredible. I think winning in

:36:55.:37:00.

Montreal this year, a track we've never won at. To be totally dominant

:37:01.:37:05.

through the weekend was really satisfying. The worst bit?

:37:06.:37:14.

Obviously, there was a highlight in terms of performance, but a low

:37:15.:37:18.

light in the way it panned out and the attention it attracted. That was

:37:19.:37:23.

probably my low light of the year. Tell me how the relationship is now.

:37:24.:37:28.

It's always been professional, I know, between Mark and Seb, but have

:37:29.:37:33.

you seen any relaxing of it in the last few races with Mark heading out

:37:34.:37:39.

of Formula One? Has that changed their relationship at all? It's

:37:40.:37:42.

changed a little bit. They've always been a -- there has always been a

:37:43.:37:47.

respect between them. The problem is they're different generations.

:37:48.:37:51.

There's more than a ten-year age gap between the two of them and they're

:37:52.:37:55.

different characters, different personalities. Therefore, there has

:37:56.:37:59.

been, on occasion, differences of opinion over certain issues. There's

:38:00.:38:04.

been a respect. Certainly, seeing that, as Mark is getting to the end

:38:05.:38:09.

of his career now, I think it has thawed between the two of them. In

:38:10.:38:17.

future years, with a bit of time for reflection, the relationship with

:38:18.:38:21.

them will only grow. Looking down through the grid this year,

:38:22.:38:24.

obviously you keep a very close eye on young drivers, particularly

:38:25.:38:28.

through the Toro Rosso programme. You've taken Ricciardo to join your

:38:29.:38:33.

top team for next year. Any other drivers that have impressed you this

:38:34.:38:42.

year amongst some of the xetive teams? -- competitive teams?

:38:43.:38:47.

Grosjean has stepped it up a gear, particularly in the last few months.

:38:48.:38:51.

He's looked very impressive. I think Hulkenberg has done an excellent job

:38:52.:38:57.

in the Sauber. They're two guys who have really stood out. Certainly I

:38:58.:39:01.

think most people would agree with you. Thank you very much for joining

:39:02.:39:04.

us again. Let's hope we get some running in before the end of the

:39:05.:39:07.

session. Thank you. Jules Bianchi on track at the

:39:08.:39:11.

moment. Who else? Not very many. Three cars out there. Jules Bianchi,

:39:12.:39:15.

Max Chilton and Valtteri Bottas, the only cars out there at the moment.

:39:16.:39:20.

It is probably one of the quietest. We are going shortly on the full

:39:21.:39:24.

wets again. We don't want to damage these tyres. This is probably the

:39:25.:39:30.

best chance before the track gets worse again. ( At the end of the

:39:31.:39:45.

day, that's what happens when the track gets slippery. You can't do

:39:46.:39:49.

anything about it. That's right. The only time we have sets is Bianchi,

:39:50.:39:56.

Chilton. Barning bank has done 1. 33. 4. -- Bianchi has done 1. 33. 4.

:39:57.:40:06.

No-one else has set a lap time. So the normal front runners haven't

:40:07.:40:10.

completed a lap. Bottas hasn't completed a lap. The fin is out of

:40:11.:40:16.

shape there. He has no fear of these conditions. You can see he seems to

:40:17.:40:21.

thrive on the car moving around beneath him. He doesn't seem to

:40:22.:40:24.

worry about the car moving around. That's a good thing to be.

:40:25.:40:27.

Obviously, when the car is moving, you know where it is as well. If you

:40:28.:40:32.

drive fast enough, then it just snaps away, you have a problem. If

:40:33.:40:36.

My Friends Could See Me Now the car is moving -- if you keep the car

:40:37.:40:43.

moving, then you don't have that problem.

:40:44.:40:48.

# Valtteri Bottas is exceptional in these conditions. Let's think back

:40:49.:40:52.

to Canada this year when we had changeable conditions in qualifying.

:40:53.:40:57.

He put it third on the grid. He's a solid guy. Look what he did last

:40:58.:41:01.

weekend - exceptional. Whenever he has had a chance to perform this

:41:02.:41:05.

year, he has nailed it. He's been rewarded with another contract by

:41:06.:41:08.

Williams. Another contract and a new team-mate in the shape of Felipe

:41:09.:41:13.

Massa. He's going to be measured against a known target now. For all

:41:14.:41:17.

the teams, who'll watch to see how he gets on, it gives a clearer

:41:18.:41:22.

gradient. Against Maldonado, we know he can be quick, but we know he's

:41:23.:41:27.

inconsistent. Bottas has done well to out qualify Maldonado on more

:41:28.:41:31.

occasions than not this year, but it's hard to judge him. Yeah, Massa

:41:32.:41:35.

coming into the team will be a huge asset for Williams at the moment.

:41:36.:41:40.

They need to build. Pat is a great guy, running the engineering side of

the company now. He listens to people. He understands people. Hose

:41:45.:41:51.

a racer at heart. -- he's a racer at heart. We will like Massa coming

:41:52.:41:56.

there. This was the lap we were watching

:41:57.:42:00.

now, when he got quite out of shape. Look how much work on the steering

:42:01.:42:04.

wheel. You don't often see that on a Formula One car. But these

:42:05.:42:07.

conditions are a different story. A question has come in - thank you for

:42:08.:42:12.

your questions. What happens to the individual race engineers when

:42:13.:42:16.

drivers change teams? Do they then work with the new driver that's

:42:17.:42:19.

coming in? The question particularly is about Rob Smedley, will he work

:42:20.:42:27.

with Kimi Raikkonen and will he be at Ferrari? There are driver

:42:28.:42:32.

relationships. If you take Kimi Raikkonen's engineer Mark Slayed. He

:42:33.:42:37.

was with Kimi at McLaren. You gept a relationship -- you get a

:42:38.:42:40.

relationship built up. But the team employs the engineers. It's up to

:42:41.:42:43.

the engineer whether he wants to take on a new job or move away. We

:42:44.:42:52.

will see Smedley making a move. Everything sways that little bit. We

:42:53.:42:58.

see changes even higher up in the engineering front. People from

:42:59.:43:02.

higher levels move because of a driver movement. Just because they

:43:03.:43:04.

have a relationship with that driver. It's quite important. Let's

:43:05.:43:08.

see what this lap time is for Sebastien Vettel. He's been pushing

:43:09.:43:15.

hard on this lap. Reasonable middle seconder. -- sector. He could go

:43:16.:43:21.

quickest here. He's five tenths faster than anybody else. Bottas is

:43:22.:43:26.

pretty good in these conditions. That's a good lap by Sebastien

:43:27.:43:29.

Vettel, the first of the front runners to show us what he can do.

:43:30.:43:36.

Jonathan Wheatly looking at the monitors. He looks like a Bond

:43:37.:43:40.

villain as he assesses that lap. Weber is still in the -- Mark Webber

:43:41.:43:47.

is still in the pits. You have to keep pushing, but one thing you want

:43:48.:43:51.

to do at the end of the session is bring it back with all four wheels.

:43:52.:43:54.

When the cars come back from these sessions they're horrible, covered

:43:55.:43:58.

in muck and debris. You don't want to be having to fix the car during

:43:59.:44:01.

these sessions because it can take away from the effort you put in for

:44:02.:44:14.

qualify. Lap time is two or three seconds off the cross--over. Talking

:44:15.:44:20.

about the cross-over, when to switch from the wets to the

:44:21.:44:24.

interimmediatians. Tom? I wanted to follow up, we were talking about Red

:44:25.:44:29.

Bull earlier and Sebastien Vettel gets ready to come in. I was

:44:30.:44:33.

fascinated by what they did yesterday. They put an aerodynamic

:44:34.:44:38.

device onto the car yesterday so they could back-to-back next year's

:44:39.:44:47.

prototype dry tyre with the hard compound tyre that the team are

:44:48.:44:52.

using this weekend, Gary, what could they have learned in those wet

:44:53.:44:56.

conditions with those slick tyres yesterday? None of the other teams

:44:57.:45:00.

did it. Why did Red Bull? I think they did it just because they had

:45:01.:45:04.

the equipment on there to measures something. In reality I think they

:45:05.:45:08.

would have learned very little. The thing you want to measure is when

:45:09.:45:13.

the car is in a high-speed corner, you want to measure the distortion

:45:14.:45:17.

in the tyre. The tyre goes down the straight at speed with a normal

:45:18.:45:22.

aerodynamic forces displacing the tyre and making it change its shape

:45:23.:45:27.

when it touches the ground. You want to see how it changes the airflow.

:45:28.:45:32.

And how it changes the airflow when you go through a high-speed corner

:45:33.:45:36.

with lots of tyre distortion. Those are the things that a tyre can

:45:37.:45:41.

influence dramatically. It was still wet, they wouldn't have lateral

:45:42.:45:45.

force to deflect the tyre. It wouldn't be quick down the straight

:45:46.:45:51.

I thought Ross Brawn made an interesting comment yesterday

:45:52.:45:55.

afternoon, when he was asked a similar question about why didn't

:45:56.:45:58.

you go out on the slick tyres? Red Bull always seem to be a step ahead.

:45:59.:46:03.

Ross just said, well in our opinion bad information is worse than no

:46:04.:46:07.

information. That was his comment. It can lead you astray. I think they

:46:08.:46:11.

only did it just because they had the kit on the car. I don't think we

:46:12.:46:17.

see Red Bull led astray too often. They do a quick job. Quick lap from

:46:18.:46:27.

Hamilton. 1. 29. 9. That was a good lap by Lewis. First driver into the

:46:28.:46:33.

1. 29. Maybe he's happier with the handling of the Mercedes today.

:46:34.:46:36.

Looking at Giedo Van der Garde. He had a bit of a moment. He was on the

:46:37.:46:43.

kerb, but he recovered. Rosberg is just going out. We have seen

:46:44.:46:58.

Hamilton go fastest of anybody. It's been a much quieter FP3 than normal.

:46:59.:47:02.

A couple of questions coming in. Thank you for those, as the pace

:47:03.:47:07.

begins to pick up. Question for you Gary from Matthew who says, "If I

:47:08.:47:10.

wanted to get into the strategy side of things, within an F1 team, what's

:47:11.:47:16.

the best way to go about that? You need good mathematical understanding

:47:17.:47:21.

because it's all about simulation. To be honest, you have to do that.

:47:22.:47:26.

You have to find yourself some way into motor racing. It doesn't matter

:47:27.:47:30.

what level, on your CV you need experience. If you can do that, the

:47:31.:47:34.

team can buy into it. It is a tough line, but it's something that can be

:47:35.:47:39.

done. Most of the strategists would have some sort of degree, whether

:47:40.:47:42.

it's engineering or a maths degree or something? Pure maths would be

:47:43.:47:47.

more for that side of thing. It depends on where you want to go in

:47:48.:47:50.

the future as well. Today is today. If you want to do the strategy work

:47:51.:47:53.

today, but tomorrow is another day, you don't know what's going to

:47:54.:47:56.

happen. If you do that well, you will always step up the team or get

:47:57.:48:00.

the offers to step up the team. All the education you can get, put that

:48:01.:48:04.

as a package and get yourself in the door with a F3 team, or GP 2,

:48:05.:48:14.

something to sell to a Formula One team. Daniel Kyviat was with us

:48:15.:48:20.

yesterday. He had driven in the morning. We were impressed by his

:48:21.:48:23.

driving and how he chatted to us later in the day. He speaks several

:48:24.:48:27.

languages, born in Russia, moved to Italy when he was 13. Speaks

:48:28.:48:32.

Russian, Italian and also Spanish and very fluent English. He lives in

:48:33.:48:35.

Milton Keynes at the moment. I think he'll be dog a lot of work on the

:48:36.:48:40.

simulators over the winter. Now done to Jenny. I think you have news from

:48:41.:48:46.

McLaren. Yes, Jenson Button just standing with his race engineer,

:48:47.:48:51.

Dave. They're working on a few tweaks on the car. What I want to

:48:52.:48:56.

show you, look at the back, the rear wing. Remember that formation, not

:48:57.:49:04.

much low downforce. And let's look at Sergio Perez's car. You can see a

:49:05.:49:11.

different set up. Lock at the back, completely different rear wing.

:49:12.:49:19.

Inner there there is a monkey seat. They're going in two very different

:49:20.:49:24.

directions at the moment. The thing is to try to get the best out of the

:49:25.:49:30.

car possible. If you aren't -- if you aren't sure about the weather

:49:31.:49:33.

tomorrow, you need speed. Running two cars differently is not the

:49:34.:49:38.

wrong thing for sure. Hamilton, interestingly came back in the pits.

:49:39.:49:42.

He had done the fastest first sector of anybody, then he came out of it.

:49:43.:49:47.

He came back into the pits. Presumably they're looking after the

:49:48.:49:52.

tyres. He is fastest any way. Probably looking after the tyres,

:49:53.:49:55.

but it might have been a little mistake. The midsection of this

:49:56.:49:59.

track you can make loads of mistakes. Then you give up because

:50:00.:50:03.

there's no point in running the tyres the rest of the lap. You know

:50:04.:50:07.

it's not going to be faster. It is about looking after the tyres. It's

:50:08.:50:12.

a strange world because three sets of these wet tyres, it sounds like a

:50:13.:50:16.

lot, but actually it's not very much. That's right. We have Paul

:50:17.:50:22.

Hembry with us explaining they can't justify flying around many more sets

:50:23.:50:27.

of wet tyres for the relatively rare occasions. We do follow the sun in

:50:28.:50:31.

formula unwith. Generally -- Formula One. Generally we have dry events.

:50:32.:50:36.

We've had a few wet qualifying sessions but not a fully wet Grand

:50:37.:50:41.

Prix since Brazil last year. That was fully wet at times. It's been a

:50:42.:50:45.

whole year since we've had one. Yeah, and more tyres is just more

:50:46.:50:50.

tyres. What the should do is replace the wets, if you use them, or the

:50:51.:50:56.

intermediates if you use them on the Friday. That would mean carrying an

:50:57.:50:59.

extra set of tyres, but it wouldn't always be used. You don't have to

:51:00.:51:05.

take it everywhere. This place we've come, how many times it's been wet,

:51:06.:51:09.

so you know where you have to bring them to. We've seen a lot of wet

:51:10.:51:14.

events in the past. Gutierrez is second fastest. He's done 1. 31.

:51:15.:51:25.

16789? -- 1. 31. 1. Hulkenberg is third fastest. Sutil is fourth.

:51:26.:51:30.

Vettel is five being with the time -- fifth with the time from earlier

:51:31.:51:35.

on. Perez is eighth. Van der Garde is ninth. Bianchi 10th and Chilton

:51:36.:51:42.

11th. No, 12th. We have Charles Pic in between the two Marussias.

:51:43.:51:50.

Charles Pic is on track. It looks as though Caterham have a bit more

:51:51.:51:55.

speed than Marussia in the wet. They have more downforce on the car. That

:51:56.:51:59.

squashes the car into the track and give them more grip. Downforce is

:52:00.:52:03.

everything in the wet. Tomorrow's weather forecast we're not sure

:52:04.:52:07.

about. But this surface here because of the long pit straight and the

:52:08.:52:12.

first part is uphill, with too much downforce it's easier to pass into

:52:13.:52:21.

turn one. A lot of understeer. We gather that Sauber are running

:52:22.:52:25.

two different set-ups on their car. Useful feed back from Nico

:52:26.:52:28.

Hulkenberg there as they try to work out which set up is the one to go

:52:29.:52:33.

for. If anybody was going for a lower downforce set up, Hulkenberg

:52:34.:52:39.

would be the man. If you're going to split your cars, Hulkenberg would be

:52:40.:52:42.

any choice of being able to cope with the downforce level is a bit

:52:43.:52:47.

less. A lot of these decisions will have to be made quickly. -- minutes

:52:48.:53:05.

-- 20 minutes left to go. You can see the wet tyres on the car. Very

:53:06.:53:09.

deeply treaded, full extreme wet tyres on the Sauber. The more

:53:10.:53:14.

lightly treaded version, different pattern that you see on the

:53:15.:53:21.

intermediate. X Chilton is on the circuit. He didn't do free practice

:53:22.:53:26.

1 in the morning, they had the free driver in the morning. He's trying

:53:27.:53:30.

to learn the track. It's only been wet. He hasn't done any dry laps in

:53:31.:53:34.

either of the sessions. None of them have of course, but he's learning

:53:35.:53:38.

the track. It will be interesting if it dries up over tomorrow's Grand

:53:39.:53:50.

Prix. I think Pic and Van der Garde have been here. Tom, what do you

:53:51.:53:54.

have for us? Good news for myself and Jenny is that it's stopped

:53:55.:53:58.

raining in the pit lane. Mark Webber is the first guy out on intermediate

:53:59.:54:03.

tyres. You have to remember, this afternoon we could end up with a

:54:04.:54:10.

drying qualifying session, as we saw in 2010, when Nico Hulkenberg kept

:54:11.:54:13.

the car on the road on the driest bit of the session and took pole

:54:14.:54:17.

position. I expect to see a lot of cars out now. I know it's the end of

:54:18.:54:22.

the session any way. Get out on the intermediate now and try to simulate

:54:23.:54:27.

what we will see this afternoon. That's very likely. Big slide for

:54:28.:54:32.

Chilton. He has enough run-off to use. It was graceful for a while.

:54:33.:54:39.

Eventually he had to run of the Tarmac into the run-off area. A bit

:54:40.:54:44.

of bright nts around. -- brightness around. It's misty our window and

:54:45.:54:50.

it's hard to see when it's raining or not. But we can see it's

:54:51.:54:58.

brightening up along Sao Paulo. This is Max Chilton. Well held. Lots of

:54:59.:55:04.

steering lock on there. He picked up the car well. Going out on

:55:05.:55:07.

intermediates right now, I agree with the fact you need to find out

:55:08.:55:11.

some time. But there is enough time to have left it longer. The rain has

:55:12.:55:15.

stopped. The track will only get that bit better for a few minutes. I

:55:16.:55:26.

think it might be early tore Mark Webber at the moment. Currently on

:55:27.:55:34.

track. He's in the middle sector of the lap currently. We'll see how he

:55:35.:55:39.

gets on with that. He's gone through turn five. There he is, coming up to

:55:40.:55:50.

turn six. Let's see how he gets on on these intermediate tyres. The

:55:51.:55:55.

full wets clear the water at 60 litres per second. The intermediates

:55:56.:56:00.

about 20 a second. The full wets really clear the water at an amazing

:56:01.:56:06.

rate. Yeah, they do. It's 60 litres a second, that's like filling a

:56:07.:56:09.

bathtub in four seconds. The faster you go, the more it pumps, not just

:56:10.:56:16.

because of the grooves in there. It's actually because those grooves

:56:17.:56:21.

are built, so as they distort they act like a pump. The water is pumped

:56:22.:56:25.

out. Less grooves on the intermediates less pumping of water.

:56:26.:56:30.

This is on board with Mark Webber. We node a slightly clearer visor.

:56:31.:56:37.

That's a great shot. He's gone fastest. 1. 29. 9.4. He's fastest in

:56:38.:56:44.

the middle sector, not quite the fastest in the first and third. That

:56:45.:56:51.

indicates they're running a lot of downforce. He got on the grass

:56:52.:56:57.

there. That's a bit soggy now. Mark Webber, remember those intermediates

:56:58.:57:01.

that he has on are brand new compared to used wets from yesterday

:57:02.:57:07.

that are on the other cars. Slightly biassed comparison. You could do 27

:57:08.:57:13.

or 28 on the wet tire if it was brand new as well. Webber is so far.

:57:14.:57:24.

He has gone quite early. He may end up dropping down the order in the

:57:25.:57:28.

final minutes. It doesn't matter. This doesn't count towards the grid

:57:29.:57:31.

position of course. All it counts towards is the driver's experience

:57:32.:57:34.

of the conditions, trying to learn when it is the right time to go onto

:57:35.:57:40.

the intermediate. The cross over is just under the 1. 30 mark? Yes, I

:57:41.:57:48.

would say 1. 28. If you can do that and be safer than doing 1. 29 on the

:57:49.:57:56.

intermediate. I feel like Michael Fish at the minute. I told you the

:57:57.:58:00.

weather is getting better but now it's getting worse. The rain is

:58:01.:58:03.

coming down and it looks as if Mark Webber might have had the best of

:58:04.:58:06.

the track conditions. He's just den a very quick lap. You -- just done a

:58:07.:58:13.

very quick lap. He's massively quicker than anybody else. It's two

:58:14.:58:18.

seconds faster than Lewis Hamilton did earlier on. Changing conditions

:58:19.:58:27.

and you suddenly depet I lap -- get a lap, if you hit the sweet spot.

:58:28.:58:35.

Williams have dispensed with the exhaust blowing the extra downforce

:58:36.:58:39.

than created by the exhaust systems, they've been struggling with it from

:58:40.:58:44.

the end of last year, never got it quite right. They've got rid of it

:58:45.:58:47.

all together. Everything is a compromise. When the exhaust is

:58:48.:58:53.

blowing, the bodywork sweeps inside the rear wheels an you compromise

:58:54.:58:57.

that area. You lose overall downforce. As long as exhaust

:58:58.:59:01.

blowing works well, you get the downforce back with traction, which

:59:02.:59:05.

is when you want it. If it doesn't work well, you have lost something

:59:06.:59:09.

from the set up of the car. Sometimes it's better to put it in

:59:10.:59:13.

the bin. Hulkenberg has begun third fastest there. He had a moment

:59:14.:59:20.

through turn 15, turn 14 in fact. Paul di Resta had hay shunt up there

:59:21.:59:24.

last year at the end of the Grand Prix. We gather both it Ferrari and

:59:25.:59:31.

Mercedes are not going to be out any further. They are saving tyres

:59:32.:59:34.

rather than getting experience for the track in these conditions. They

:59:35.:59:37.

feel they've done enough over the three practice sessions so far today

:59:38.:59:42.

that they don't need to, or over the weekend, that they don't need to go

:59:43.:59:47.

out now. It's an interesting choice. It is, but in reality, the track is

:59:48.:59:51.

changing so much in conditions, it's about getting in the car and

:59:52.:59:55.

adapting when qualifying comes. You can't take much from this session as

:59:56.:59:59.

far as what's going to happen in qualifying. You have to wait and

:00:00.:00:02.

make sure you are ready for those set of circumstances that might suit

:00:03.:00:07.

your car and your driver to put intermediates or wets on, that will

:00:08.:00:10.

happen during qualifying. They will work towards qualifying, perhaps

:00:11.:00:14.

going for a full wet set up if they think it's going to be raining in

:00:15.:00:20.

the race. Gutierrez has done 17 laps during this session. Next best 12

:00:21.:00:24.

for Hulkenberg. So Sauber doing a lot of work here. They're

:00:25.:00:30.

experimenting between different set-ups. That might help them later.

:00:31.:00:34.

It's good to get laps under your belt, particularly for a less

:00:35.:00:39.

exeensed driver like -- experienced driver like Barry Estabrook. He

:00:40.:00:47.

could be one -- like Esteban Gutierrez. Vergne himself, by the

:00:48.:00:52.

way, he hasn't done a time yet. He has only just gone out. Gutierrez

:00:53.:00:57.

really is using the wide lines to the maximum. He almost hit the white

:00:58.:01:07.

line on the edge. Let's listen. We have higher left front temperature

:01:08.:01:13.

than the right. Still working on getting the temperatures right in

:01:14.:01:17.

the tyres. Bottas has gone in as well. He's quite a long way off what

:01:18.:01:23.

Webber did. But he's second. Kovalainen is fourth now. He always

:01:24.:01:29.

goes well in slippery conditions. Only a sect outing for Lotus. This

:01:30.:01:34.

is Romain Grosjean's car, star of the last Grand Prix when he finished

:01:35.:01:37.

second, splitting the two Red Bulls. He has gone eighth. Confidence boost

:01:38.:01:43.

for Heikki Kovalainen there, having set the fourth fastest time. He out

:01:44.:01:47.

paced Grosjean yesterday. He has outpaced him so far today. What

:01:48.:01:50.

counts is qualifying. Grosjean knows that. He may be keeping a little in

:01:51.:01:56.

reserve. A lock up for Hulkenberg. You can see he was trying to turn

:01:57.:02:00.

into the corner. He got the brakes locked. These tyres don't like

:02:01.:02:05.

turning and braking. He's definitely, front brakes a bit dodgy

:02:06.:02:11.

for him. That was the outside tyre. It implies the tyre temperature

:02:12.:02:14.

isn't quite right. Yeah, it does. When you lock up, it's hard, you

:02:15.:02:20.

have to get off the brakes. Thalingz the last thing you want to do --

:02:21.:02:23.

that's the last thing you want to do. In these conditions the tyres

:02:24.:02:29.

cool so quickly. Second fastest. Another good lap. Maybe it's about

:02:30.:02:33.

living in Finland. These guys seem to be so good in the wet conditions.

:02:34.:02:38.

Jean-Eric Vergne saying that his car is pulling massively to the left,

:02:39.:02:43.

he's told the guys on the radio. He's been told work your brakes, we

:02:44.:02:48.

have higher temperatures on one side than the other. It looked like Nico

:02:49.:02:52.

Hulkenberg. Ing that an issue for the teams. The brakes around here

:02:53.:02:56.

get different temperatures. Some people have brake ducts as well.

:02:57.:02:59.

There is different cooling on them because of that problem. You pointed

:03:00.:03:06.

that out on the Mercedes yesterday that one brake duct had a hole in

:03:07.:03:09.

the top and the other was solid. Grosjean goes second. There's not

:03:10.:03:13.

much between them. Lotus should be happy about that. A nod of the head

:03:14.:03:20.

from iric. That's good effort. Still -- Eric. That's good effort. Still

:03:21.:03:27.

trying to beat Ferrari for third. Two drivers scoring, you can get big

:03:28.:03:31.

shifts at the end of the season. That's what they're looking for.

:03:32.:03:35.

It's a culmination of both drivers' points. The maximum you can score 43

:03:36.:03:39.

points, if you get a first and second. Not pane of those done. Red

:03:40.:03:44.

Bull have had a couple this year. If you were lucky enough to fall into

:03:45.:03:50.

that, it's big points. Hulkenberg has gone fifth on that lap. Good

:03:51.:03:54.

first sector, faster than anyone in the first sector, lost out in the

:03:55.:03:58.

middle sector. That's where he didn't gain the time. We're watching

:03:59.:04:01.

Gutierrez, his team-mates still going around. He's burned through

:04:02.:04:07.

the fuel a bit today. He's been a busy boy. Yes, very busy. That flick

:04:08.:04:12.

there. That's scary. That's a flick you don't want. A couple of people

:04:13.:04:17.

have flicks there and end up with consequences. That's a very fast

:04:18.:04:21.

corner. In the dry, it's not really a corner. But in the wet it's

:04:22.:04:25.

seriously a corner. Some quick reactions from Gutierrez. We have

:04:26.:04:29.

saw that from Hulkenberg as well. Di Resta crosses the line. He's tenth.

:04:30.:04:34.

Haven't seen a lot of Force India. They are now. They've decided to

:04:35.:04:38.

leave it at the end. They're pretty evenly matched.

:04:39.:04:46.

The checkered flag is about to come out on the session. F #36r3 comes to

:04:47.:05:09.

a conclusion with Mark Webber quickest. -- FP3. Ricciardo is 1. 5

:05:10.:05:23.

seconds down at the moment. Let's watch him up the hill and see how

:05:24.:05:28.

stable the car is. No problem through there. Even using the

:05:29.:05:32.

painted outside green part. That's pretty brave. I think I'd stay off

:05:33.:05:37.

that bit. He seemed to deal with it OK. Ricciardo comes through and is

:05:38.:05:47.

#107b8g. -- 10th. We know Jean-Eric Vergne likes the wet conditions.

:05:48.:05:51.

Gutierrez sixth there and Vergne goes sixth now. He splits the

:05:52.:06:02.

soubers. Once -- Saubers. Vergne is recognised to be a wet weather

:06:03.:06:06.

specialist. Ricciardo could have his work cut out if it stays like this.

:06:07.:06:11.

Di Resta also still slightly quicker. He maintains the edge over

:06:12.:06:17.

his team-mate. Two strong team-mates at Force India. They push each other

:06:18.:06:20.

along. Who else is to finish? Charles Pic is about to come around

:06:21.:06:27.

through this last little loop. He's in 16th place. Can he find a tenth

:06:28.:06:30.

on this lap and go ahead of his team-mate? Yes, he does. So the

:06:31.:06:41.

third practice session has ended with a man leaving Formula One

:06:42.:06:47.

fastest of all. That's got to be a nice feeling, 1. 27, the only one in

:06:48.:06:50.

1. 27. 8. Hamilton is in 11th place. He wasn't

:06:51.:07:04.

running at the end. That applies for the front runners. Ricciardo 12th,

:07:05.:07:09.

Bianchi ahead of Pic, Chilton and Van der Garde. Vettel was 17th at

:07:10.:07:13.

the end. When he was out there, he was competitive. Perez didn't do

:07:14.:07:18.

that many laps. He's 18th. Rosberg didn't bother setting the time at

:07:19.:07:20.

all. Jenson Button didn't do any lap

:07:21.:07:35.

times. Massa same story. A lot of teams just concentrating on saving

:07:36.:07:39.

their tyres for qualifying. That's important. I think the mix between

:07:40.:07:43.

Bottas, Hulkenberg, Vergne, Gutierrez, Maldonado, that's great,

:07:44.:07:47.

to see the small teams getting themselves up there. You have to

:07:48.:07:50.

make the right decisions come qualifying. What you did in this

:07:51.:07:55.

session doesn't really matter, but they'll be all right in qualifying.

:07:56.:08:02.

Fastest in FP3. He will be one of those fighting for pole position I'm

:08:03.:08:05.

sure. He's done well here in the past, two-time winner of this

:08:06.:08:12.

circuit we'll keep an eye on Rosberg, Hamilton and Sebastien

:08:13.:08:14.

Vettel. Not a very representative session,

:08:15.:08:17.

but the rain will not spoil things. There are so many stories here this

:08:18.:08:21.

weekend. Sebastien Vettel looking for his ninth consecutive

:08:22.:08:24.

record-breaking victory. Mark Webber, fastest in that session,

:08:25.:08:29.

he's hoping to bow out from Formula One with a win. Felipe Massa driving

:08:30.:08:34.

for Ferrari for the last time after eight years. A lot of drivers here

:08:35.:08:38.

don't know if they'll be in Formula One next year, eight seats up for

:08:39.:08:42.

grabs, well a lot of drivers on the market. Find out more about all of

:08:43.:08:44.

this in just one hour, BBC One, 3pm:
