It is the conclusion to the 2013 season, it is time for a bit of a

:01:07.:01:12.

reflection, contemplation and sophistication. Who do we think got

:01:13.:01:21.

the best start this year? I think we should talk about Fernando Alonso.

:01:22.:01:28.

Pick a race. Spa, Spain. Do we really think it was the best? There

:01:29.:01:37.

were other candidates. I think his team-mate, Massa. British Grand

:01:38.:01:43.

Prix, gained six places. We are so overjoyed that in the wisdom of BBC,

:01:44.:01:47.

you are the winner of the best start of the season. It was definitely a

:01:48.:01:52.

fantastic start, we overtook so many cars and that is really nice. It

:01:53.:01:58.

will go to my museum. Thank you very much. I hope I can repeat many

:01:59.:02:05.

starts like that. Best overtake. He has that charisma and style and can

:02:06.:02:10.

make something special out of an occasion. I am talking about

:02:11.:02:16.

Fernando Alonso. Last year he won the best start, but this year you

:02:17.:02:19.

got the best overtaking manoeuvre, how did you do it? Overtaking mark

:02:20.:02:26.

is not easy because he is a fighter and a great racing driver. I used

:02:27.:02:34.

all of the KERS out of turn one. There was space enough for the car.

:02:35.:02:42.

There was not time to back off so I had to pass. We have to talk about

:02:43.:02:49.

driver of the year and I think the most improved driver of the year was

:02:50.:02:55.

Grosjean. You thought you would never say that. Which race? I

:02:56.:03:00.

thought Texas was a very mature drive but there are other great

:03:01.:03:05.

ones. The way he kept Hulkenberg behind. This is drive of the year,

:03:06.:03:13.

can you guess for which race? It is probably career. It is a pleasure, a

:03:14.:03:22.

privilege to have this one. I will put it among the other good trophies

:03:23.:03:26.

I have, hopefully there will be a Formula 1 trophy very soon. Thank

:03:27.:03:32.

you. We should give an award called broadcast of the year to the driver

:03:33.:03:36.

that has given us the best team radio entertainment and I think that

:03:37.:03:41.

is Lewis Hamilton. I cannot think of anyone else who gave us such a laugh

:03:42.:03:44.

at that moment and I would agree with everything you have said,

:03:45.:03:49.

except that. What particular moment are you talking about? I can't drive

:03:50.:03:56.

any slower and I have been overtaken by a Williams. Are you going to pull

:03:57.:04:02.

me in? We need to manage this position. I am trying to.

:04:03.:04:12.

Broadcaster of the year. For keeping that entertained with your fabulous

:04:13.:04:19.

radio quips. It is a trophy, I suppose was up thank you to the

:04:20.:04:26.

team. Who has been naughty? Sebastian Vettel has been a bit

:04:27.:04:33.

controversial. He has been properly naughty and he has been cheeky. The

:04:34.:04:43.

BBC have decided you are... No, this naughty boy is for swearing. Doing

:04:44.:04:47.

doughnuts when you were not supposed to. It is not that naughty, is it?

:04:48.:04:56.

It was expensive but was it naughty? I am very proud, officially it is

:04:57.:05:00.

the first time I am the bad boy. Usually nice guys finish last. And

:05:01.:05:05.

the bad guys get to take the prom queen home. I don't know where she

:05:06.:05:14.

is but I am sure I will find! I think we also need to do something

:05:15.:05:17.

to bring on record those who did something a little bit dippy. I am

:05:18.:05:22.

talking about Lewis, he completely did what Jenson Button did. They

:05:23.:05:26.

seem to always call into the wrong pets. He went in the wrong pets,

:05:27.:05:35.

Hamilton went into the wrong pet! You get another award, the BBC

:05:36.:05:39.

nostalgia award, you are so nostalgic about your time at McLaren

:05:40.:05:45.

that you pulled into their pit box. It is just amazing! It was a good

:05:46.:05:48.

experience and they said I could come back at any time! That is a

:05:49.:05:54.

good note to leave on. We have to give mark an award. He had had some

:05:55.:05:57.

incredible retirements, he is retiring. There have been a few

:05:58.:06:05.

retirements, can you remember walking under a ladder at the start

:06:06.:06:10.

of the season? I consider myself lucky. Anyway, thank you, BBC, I can

:06:11.:06:15.

see you have put a huge amount of imagination into the award and I am

:06:16.:06:19.

by excited to have it will stand pride of place next to my GP wins.

:06:20.:06:25.

Mark, you are a genius, I will miss you, I think you are a top guy. Who

:06:26.:06:34.

are you talking to? We are definitely talking to you now, hello

:06:35.:06:38.

and welcome to a wet qualifying session from Interlagos. There were

:06:39.:06:43.

so many reasons to watch this weekend. Undoubtedly Sebastian

:06:44.:06:46.

Vettel has dominated with his masterful, magical, majestic

:06:47.:06:51.

performance. This weekend, Spotlight on Mark Webber, for his last ever

:06:52.:06:55.

Formula 1 race and what an amazing place to do it. It is, this place is

:06:56.:07:01.

steeped in history. We have just bumped into eminence -- Emerson fit

:07:02.:07:11.

about it. -- Fittipaldi. It is unthinkable to think of a Grand Prix

:07:12.:07:15.

without a Brazilian driver. It is a fitting base to retire from. He has

:07:16.:07:24.

had a couple of good wins here. He has, we just walked past the podium

:07:25.:07:27.

and that is where he will be hoping to be. As he stepped out of the car

:07:28.:07:32.

after qualifying, he will start to feel, this is it, my last moment in

:07:33.:07:38.

a Grand Prix car. The last moment for Felipe Massa in a Ferrari, he

:07:39.:07:44.

will get a heroes welcome. Brazil are so patriotic. The reality is

:07:45.:07:51.

that as far as Felipe Massa is concerned, he is going to Williams,

:07:52.:07:55.

he is finally letting go of the number two slot, he will probably be

:07:56.:07:58.

number one at Williams and he needs and deserves that. In terms of this

:07:59.:08:04.

track, you have driven and one here, it looks amazing. It is of -- a very

:08:05.:08:17.

short nap. Busy for the drivers. The racetrack is bumpy, like the open

:08:18.:08:24.

roads here in Brazil. Even in these conditions, it is still physically a

:08:25.:08:31.

tough track. As you can tell, it is raining here. It was very wet

:08:32.:08:38.

yesterday. This is one of those tracks that does train quite well.

:08:39.:08:44.

It could throw up different conclusions. -- it does drain.

:08:45.:09:05.

If Sebastian Vettel wins, he will have taken nine wins on the bounce.

:09:06.:09:11.

Eight consecutive wins in one season, a record, happened last

:09:12.:09:15.

weekend in that car in Austin. Because Sebastian Vettel is a

:09:16.:09:22.

fanatical Formula 1 historian, he had to fight back the tears as he

:09:23.:09:25.

edged his name into the history books one last time. -- he etched

:09:26.:09:29.

his name. Vettel just gets in front. Grosjean

:09:30.:09:40.

goes into second place. Hamilton goes up to third. Webber lost out,

:09:41.:09:47.

big-time. Sutil has hit the wall and we have the safety car on track. It

:09:48.:09:53.

was contact with Maldonado. We need to manage these tyres. Let me focus.

:09:54.:10:03.

He has taken the place from Hamilton, it was a great move from

:10:04.:10:08.

Mark Webber. You are doing a great job, you need to manage this

:10:09.:10:10.

position. I am trying to. Bottas goes around the outside, he

:10:11.:10:20.

has made it. He has moved up into eighth position.

:10:21.:10:28.

Fernando Alonso moves into fifth place.

:10:29.:10:31.

Grosjean is hanging in there at the moment, doing a fine job of keeping

:10:32.:10:37.

Webber behind. ON RADIO: Do the same again. Is he

:10:38.:10:44.

going to make a lunge for it. It is not going to happen for him. He has

:10:45.:10:48.

used too much rear. He made a big mistake. That has dropped away and

:10:49.:10:54.

we are running out of laps. Ferrari are struggling for grip. This is

:10:55.:10:58.

Hulkenberg on Alonso. It looks as to the Ferrari has hit the cliff. He

:10:59.:11:02.

has a great speed advantage, moves to the inside. He is going to return

:11:03.:11:06.

the favour on Fernando Alonso, he was past him. But Alonso cuts back.

:11:07.:11:10.

Lovely race craft. First win for Vettel, first win for Red Bull in

:11:11.:11:15.

America, but it is his eighth in a row, the 12th of 2013.

:11:16.:11:19.

ON RADIO: You have to remember there is no guarantee they will last

:11:20.:11:23.

forever. I love you guys. So with that result and all that

:11:24.:11:27.

team adoration Vettel secured the headlines and Alonso secured second

:11:28.:11:33.

spot in the drivers' standing. Third place is up for the taking. Kimi

:11:34.:11:37.

Raikkonen is recovering from a back operation so Hamilton and Webber

:11:38.:11:41.

have a shot as moving up. Millions of reasons for Mercedes and Ferrari

:11:42.:11:46.

to confirm that second place in the constructor's table. 15 points is

:11:47.:11:50.

the difference, Lotus are still in that mix as well, Fernando Alonso

:11:51.:11:55.

has said that he feels a second dream, second is a dream that may

:11:56.:11:59.

not be realised by Ferrari this year.

:12:00.:12:03.

It certainly has been a disappointing year, really for them

:12:04.:12:07.

but you can't say the same the team behind us. Vettel has been

:12:08.:12:12.

extraordinary and seemed to take command, from Malaysia on wards. He

:12:13.:12:17.

has been dominant and some people may say, somewhat tedious, but is he

:12:18.:12:21.

the same as Michael Schumacher? He does it with a bigger smile and a

:12:22.:12:26.

more appealing approach to the way he goes about his motor racing. I

:12:27.:12:30.

would say not Malaysia. They have been dominant in Silverstone, the

:12:31.:12:33.

tyre change, everything that happened here, made it easy-peasy

:12:34.:12:38.

for Red Bull, and I think it has played into their hands, but someone

:12:39.:12:41.

had to drive the car. Sebastian Vettel did that, and he did it

:12:42.:12:46.

brilliantly. It he has done it brilliant. Ben,ed him eight in the a

:12:47.:12:52.

row at the last race in Austin Texas. Do you think this is a

:12:53.:12:55.

special era? Unquestionably, you need the look at the competition.

:12:56.:13:01.

And the drivers that are in the car, anyone who belittles the achievement

:13:02.:13:05.

of Red Bull and Sebastian Vettel is just being so blinkered by their

:13:06.:13:09.

love of the team they follow. This is a special period and I think the

:13:10.:13:16.

words of interest yen saying that, enjoy these times because they might

:13:17.:13:21.

never come back again. This could be the last World Champion Red Bull

:13:22.:13:27.

Racing win for all we know. It is unlikely but it is not impossible.

:13:28.:13:31.

It is interesting you were talking about that, I was thinking about

:13:32.:13:35.

Fernando Alonso and our website, we have an interview Lee did, and he

:13:36.:13:41.

does talk about Vettel and not particularly favourably, so we will

:13:42.:13:44.

discuss that again tomorrow, but in terms of those other team, Ferrari,

:13:45.:13:49.

McLaren, what are they? Is it these guys have to brilliant or has

:13:50.:13:52.

everybody else fallen behind? I think they have underperformed. Let

:13:53.:13:56.

us be clear about this. I think Ferrari, they have had probably one

:13:57.:13:59.

of the worst seasons they have had for a long time, by thaun our

:14:00.:14:04.

admission. They may sound extreme, McLaren have yet to finish on the

:14:05.:14:08.

podium. That is unheard of territory for McLaren, they need to get a

:14:09.:14:11.

grip, they have a change, they have announced a new driver, obviously

:14:12.:14:15.

general so seven is going to be there, let us hope they can bring

:14:16.:14:19.

the fight -- Jensen. We need them bringing the fight to Red Bullment

:14:20.:14:24.

while David thinks they maybe their possibly championship to win, I

:14:25.:14:27.

don't go along with that, I think Red Bull are going to be the team to

:14:28.:14:31.

beat. We don't know, but coming into this season there weren't many rule

:14:32.:14:36.

changes you could be forgiven for thinking it was closer than it was

:14:37.:14:40.

On On paper McLaren had the fastest car when you look at all the races

:14:41.:14:44.

but in the end they didn't have the reliability. They lost their driver

:14:45.:14:49.

in Lewis, in all of the uncomfortable moments there, they

:14:50.:14:52.

went for a radical change and it hasn't worked for them. It's the

:14:53.:14:56.

first time since 1980 they haven't had a podium finish, so a long time

:14:57.:15:00.

and they have done a very good job, I should say, of managing the

:15:01.:15:04.

disappointment this year, so top marks to their media team. Certainly

:15:05.:15:09.

been an intriguing season. Let us catch up with the latest news.

:15:10.:15:17.

Mark Webber sets on the Formula One grid for the final time. He has been

:15:18.:15:22.

in the sport for 11 years and has been reminiscing about his career.

:15:23.:15:26.

The longevity has been something I am proud of. Never thought I would

:15:27.:15:31.

spray the champagne over 40 time, and some big victories along the

:15:32.:15:34.

way, which were good. You want more, that is human nature, would you

:15:35.:15:38.

trade in wins for a Championship? Of course.

:15:39.:15:41.

Sebastian Vettel refuses to talk about the possibility of becoming

:15:42.:15:44.

the first man to win nine consecutive Grand Prix. He did see

:15:45.:15:50.

the eighth win and his 12th of the season last week. It has taken some

:15:51.:15:55.

time to sink in. It is not what keeps me going but it means a lot,

:15:56.:16:00.

when you start to realise these thing, this year has been incredible

:16:01.:16:05.

in this regard. So I am looking forward to the winter break. You

:16:06.:16:09.

have to calm down and let all the things sink in.

:16:10.:16:12.

Jenson Button is looking forward to the end of the season after a torrid

:16:13.:16:16.

year for McLaren. But he still hopes he might get some champagne in 2013.

:16:17.:16:23.

I think I would like a podium. That is a long shot. I don't think we are

:16:24.:16:27.

too far away from that. Fighting for one has to be the aim, whether we

:16:28.:16:32.

get it is another question. Many drivers raise racing at

:16:33.:16:36.

Interlagos ant sure whether this could be their last Formula One

:16:37.:16:40.

race. Contracts are being sorted out and Sergio Perez and Paul di Resta's

:16:41.:16:43.

futures still aren't secure. The pressure for an experienced driver

:16:44.:16:47.

is going to be hard. I think there will be a lot less run in, I have a

:16:48.:16:51.

lot to offer this teem still but you need to get the performance and when

:16:52.:16:55.

you are asked to deliver in Melbourne in qualifying and to

:16:56.:16:58.

deliver in a race, the team know what I will deliver if you have the

:16:59.:17:02.

tools. Pastor Maldonado and Hulkenberg say why they can't reveal

:17:03.:17:05.

where they are going will be they in the sport next season. Max Chilton

:17:06.:17:09.

is the only driver to finish every Grand Prix this season. He will be

:17:10.:17:13.

in Formula One next year, most likely staying with Marussia. We

:17:14.:17:18.

have had good discussions and I hope to be coming back nest year. Are you

:17:19.:17:23.

90% confident you will be there? Yes, I never say 100 because you

:17:24.:17:27.

would be silly to say that unless it is signed and on the dotted line. It

:17:28.:17:31.

looks as though the news could be there for Max Chilton, sensible

:17:32.:17:35.

though, not saying 100%, you can't. He knows what is going on. Certainly

:17:36.:17:40.

does. Let us look at what we do know so far, in terms of driver line ups

:17:41.:17:44.

for next season. You will notice there are gap, can you fill those?

:17:45.:17:51.

E?? Lotus is the first one. I am sure Pastor Maldonado will go in

:17:52.:17:56.

there. A regruen I don't know if row like, people forget Eric Boullier

:17:57.:18:02.

and Pastor were partners, team drivers long ago as five years ago

:18:03.:18:05.

so they come back into the fold, that would be a strong connection.

:18:06.:18:08.

Are you saying that is not about money? Of course it is. The problem

:18:09.:18:12.

is that the money split is too difficult now. You see the top four

:18:13.:18:17.

have the money and the bottom don't. They are struggling. Somebody has to

:18:18.:18:20.

look the way the money is distributed. That is not for me to

:18:21.:18:26.

decide. Let us move on the Force India. That is where Paul di Resta

:18:27.:18:30.

is. Fans want to know what is happening to him. What have you got

:18:31.:18:33.

there? I think we have been saying for weeks, probl a couple of months

:18:34.:18:37.

that Hulkenberg for me, absolutely will announce shortly that he will

:18:38.:18:42.

be the driver at Force India so you can put Nico in there. Alongside

:18:43.:18:46.

him, there is a lot of interest and a lot of us both agree we would love

:18:47.:18:51.

to see Paul there, but I think will it be go to Sergio Perez. He has

:18:52.:18:55.

come into the mix because he got left out of at McLaren. He has money

:18:56.:19:00.

and his people are working like crazy to make sure this happens,

:19:01.:19:03.

this could be the problem for Paul going forward. Why you put Perez,

:19:04.:19:09.

because of the backing? We are are in the world at the moment, and in

:19:10.:19:13.

the world there is people like one of the richest people who has a huge

:19:14.:19:18.

marketing business but he has a Telecoms business and they want to

:19:19.:19:22.

support Mexican people. We saw the huge number of people at the race in

:19:23.:19:25.

Austin and there are people who want to support their driver, that is why

:19:26.:19:30.

Perez will get the seat. Let us look at Sauber, see what you have for

:19:31.:19:34.

them? I believe there will be a shift. This is where I think Paul

:19:35.:19:38.

has the chance, I do believe Sutil will go there, and that that other

:19:39.:19:43.

seat for me is Gutierrez or Paul di Resta. I can't be certain, but

:19:44.:19:46.

Gutierrez seeing he has been there, he will have some money, Paul has

:19:47.:19:51.

said how difficult it is about the money situation in Formula One, it

:19:52.:19:55.

is not an easy position, I am not happy about it but that is what is

:19:56.:19:59.

happening. We talked about the Russian driver. He hasn't got the

:20:00.:20:03.

license, he will be number three, most of the teams are desperate for

:20:04.:20:06.

cash, they need money to make sure that the wheels are roll, and he

:20:07.:20:11.

will be there but as a number three. We saw Max Chilton there, from

:20:12.:20:17.

Marussia and I presume you have him down as the second driver. There is

:20:18.:20:21.

no doubt about that, I think max was being nice to us there, I think he

:20:22.:20:24.

knows the same as we although it is a done deal. The situation in

:20:25.:20:29.

Caterham, dare I say, Giedo van der Garde, he is going to keep his seat.

:20:30.:20:35.

He comes with a bit of sponsor sigh ship so I am sure we will keep that

:20:36.:20:46.

position. Then the big surprise, and that is the Swedish driver Magnus

:20:47.:20:53.

Eriksson. How did you know that? He is a GP 2 driver. It a big surprise.

:20:54.:21:00.

Presumably comes with some backing. If he does or doesn't, are you

:21:01.:21:04.

telling me there isn't experienced Formula One drivers that can't take

:21:05.:21:08.

that seat. I am not it willing you egg anything. What about haky. He is

:21:09.:21:15.

the forgotten man, until somebody needs experience and he is doing an

:21:16.:21:20.

amazing job. Don't be surprised if he is in the top ten. What do you

:21:21.:21:26.

feel about this? Are you part of this show? Predictions are part of

:21:27.:21:31.

your game! There are compelling arguments for the seats to be filled

:21:32.:21:35.

out, but I agree there is great talent that has been overlooked. You

:21:36.:21:39.

mention with Kovalainen, Paul di Resta, there are a number of drivers

:21:40.:21:43.

that can clearly deliver, so, difficult times in Formula One.

:21:44.:21:46.

Difficult and interesting times. Lots of drivers changing teams and

:21:47.:21:52.

of course 2014 will mark the new era in Formula One as we say hello to

:21:53.:21:56.

the V 6 turbos. That should shake things up a bit.

:21:57.:22:02.

One man has dominated Formula One for the last four years.

:22:03.:22:09.

That could be about to change. There is a new set of regulations

:22:10.:22:14.

that will turn Formula One on its head.

:22:15.:22:19.

The first of the big rule changes is the engine.

:22:20.:22:24.

I am with Pat Symonds technical director of William what is going on

:22:25.:22:29.

with the engines? Firstly, I think we have to call them Powertrains

:22:30.:22:33.

because they are more than engines, you are going from a 2.4 litre V 8

:22:34.:22:42.

to a 1.6V 6 turbo charged energy. We have had Kerr, next year we are

:22:43.:22:48.

calling it ERS. It is more than the Ken tick, we have ten times the

:22:49.:22:53.

energy storage and twice the power. So 160 horsepower of electric power

:22:54.:22:57.

we can add to the engine and we can do it for round 33 seconds.

:22:58.:23:02.

As if that wasn't enough, the rule makers have chucked in a bunch of

:23:03.:23:06.

aerodynamic changes as well. Sam Michael, sporting director of

:23:07.:23:09.

McLaren, what is changing? The first thing you will know is that the

:23:10.:23:15.

front of the car, the front wing will be 70ml narrower. As you go

:23:16.:23:20.

down the car it has a massive effect on the diffuser, so that, combined

:23:21.:23:24.

with the lower chassis is the first change. So let us move on to the

:23:25.:23:31.

nose. You have a certain chassis height. 625ml. That is coming down

:23:32.:23:39.

by 75. That will push the nose tip. It is to improve safety on the

:23:40.:23:41.

front. A lot has been said about the

:23:42.:23:46.

changes to the exhausts. It is a relief for the teams that it is no

:23:47.:23:51.

longer a problem It is going to be gone completely. The exhaust engine

:23:52.:23:54.

is there, that blows air down, you will have a single tail pipe that

:23:55.:23:59.

will run through here, down the back of the impact structure you won't

:24:00.:24:04.

have any about to do exhaust blowing. At the rear of the car, we

:24:05.:24:09.

have the rear wing box which is this distance here, this heightlet it is

:24:10.:24:14.

reduced by 20mm so it makes the box smaller, so the rear low wing, that

:24:15.:24:17.

has gone next year. The key to finding the advantage in Formula One

:24:18.:24:22.

is finding that loophole. Are there any in the new regulations?

:24:23.:24:27.

Inevitably. We have had all the working groups, we try and close

:24:28.:24:31.

everything down, you have to remember it is 500 people in every

:24:32.:24:36.

Formula One team, and their job is to find loopholes so there will be

:24:37.:24:39.

some. The question now is which of the drivers will adapt best to the

:24:40.:24:44.

new rules? Going into next year you can't judge or say, you know you

:24:45.:24:48.

can't say based on this year's performance you will be good this

:24:49.:24:53.

years, or the other way round. Next year if you apply it too quickly

:24:54.:24:57.

because of the for you will lose the rear end. It's a very different

:24:58.:25:02.

feeling. Give the throttle pedal more respect than any other year. I

:25:03.:25:06.

am sure Red Bull is going to be quick because they have a great team

:25:07.:25:12.

but we can give them a good run for their money.

:25:13.:25:21.

The shape of things to come, fascinating times in Formula 1. Our

:25:22.:25:29.

technical expert Gary Anderson has been in that situation, how big a

:25:30.:25:36.

deal is this? It is huge, it is the car regulation change as well as a

:25:37.:25:39.

power regulation change and they have not happened together for a

:25:40.:25:43.

long time. The teams and the engine companies will have to dig deeply.

:25:44.:25:47.

What do you see as the major problems?

:25:48.:25:54.

To get ready in time. After Melbourne you will see such a rapid

:25:55.:25:59.

development. You will have to be competitive in a steer. If one of

:26:00.:26:06.

the engine companies gets it wrong it will be a real problem, it is so

:26:07.:26:11.

long to recover. If you have a problem with the crankshaft it takes

:26:12.:26:15.

three months to get a new one. That will be the biggest problem. How

:26:16.:26:22.

tough is it from a driver's point of view? Adapting to change is what

:26:23.:26:28.

separates the good from the great. The great drivers will try to find a

:26:29.:26:31.

way to exploit the new regulations to their advantage. That is why Mark

:26:32.:26:37.

Webber is saying that will be right up Sebastian Vettel's Ali. I know

:26:38.:26:46.

that Jenson Button has spent time getting used to this increased

:26:47.:26:54.

torque that is available. If we had traction control it would be a huge

:26:55.:27:00.

advantage. How different is it to sit in a simulator, I know they are

:27:01.:27:04.

fantastic these days, but to actually get in the car and drive

:27:05.:27:07.

it, they must feel completely different. Can you get good stuff

:27:08.:27:14.

out of a similar to? You get the basis of something but there is no

:27:15.:27:17.

fear when you know the worst thing that can happen is that the system

:27:18.:27:21.

will reset itself. I know some young guys who are the kings of this year

:27:22.:27:26.

later but they can't deliver the last bit of lap time in a Grand Prix

:27:27.:27:34.

car. Just quickly, Gary, only six days of testing for the drivers and

:27:35.:27:39.

the teams, will reliability be an issue? Reliability and testing will

:27:40.:27:45.

be a huge issue and reliability coming into the racing will be huge.

:27:46.:27:51.

It is so different. The heat and the electrical source, it will take a

:27:52.:27:56.

massive amount of cooling. Who is going to take the risks? It is going

:27:57.:28:00.

to be very difficult to make those decisions. Six days for each driver,

:28:01.:28:06.

I am sure they would like to have more than that. You may have noticed

:28:07.:28:10.

Eddie Jordan is not joining us at the moment. We will speak to one of

:28:11.:28:15.

the most popular men around here who has had over 300 starts, and his

:28:16.:28:19.

first one was with Gordon. Rubens Barry

:28:20.:28:26.

a lot of good friends still there? A lot of good friends, good memories.

:28:27.:28:35.

I have the passion for it and I have my friends. My son was asking, where

:28:36.:28:40.

can we go? I said, we can go everywhere. I know pretty much 85%,

:28:41.:28:46.

probably I have worked with 85% of the Formula 1 paddock. I feel proud

:28:47.:28:54.

of it. What do you think that yourself, and now with Massa

:28:55.:29:01.

leaving, what are the memories for Massa leaving here? Will he be

:29:02.:29:09.

upset? At the end of the day, drivers will be searching for good

:29:10.:29:12.

cars. You know that the red cars are good cars. That is where he could be

:29:13.:29:17.

a bit disappointed to leave. But if he has a good car in Williams,

:29:18.:29:23.

everything goes in a second. It is just having a good car. He had good

:29:24.:29:31.

times here, just like I had. Your career and his career are very

:29:32.:29:35.

similar, you are working alongside Schumacher, we know what happened

:29:36.:29:38.

then. He is working alongside Alonso. Is the pressure on being

:29:39.:29:45.

called number two, not being disrespectful, Ferrari always have a

:29:46.:29:51.

number one driver. Is it difficult? It was difficult to begin

:29:52.:29:54.

everything, because a lot of people say, he must have had that in the

:29:55.:29:59.

contract. It wasn't written in my contract about being number two. If

:30:00.:30:05.

we close our eyes and see who had more talent, Michael had more talent

:30:06.:30:09.

than I did. I have to be honest with that. But I am pretty sure if we

:30:10.:30:17.

were free to play, I am pretty sure with those seven championships,

:30:18.:30:22.

maybe one would have been mine. I am being simple in that, but it is

:30:23.:30:29.

quite a unique place to work. I think I can not be disappointed to

:30:30.:30:32.

have worked with Ferrari, everything I remember, I remember with a smile.

:30:33.:30:37.

I am not crying and saying I would have been well champion but I have

:30:38.:30:42.

done everything I wish I had done. They work in a different perspective

:30:43.:30:47.

from other teams. Could you be a dinner date for Michael Schumacher

:30:48.:30:52.

if he rang you up? Absolutely. In life you have to learn everything. I

:30:53.:30:57.

tried to change their minds when I was there. That is why I left my

:30:58.:31:02.

contract one year before the end, I wasn't satisfied with the situation.

:31:03.:31:07.

I said, I am going to try to win somewhere else. It almost happened

:31:08.:31:15.

with the Brawn team. Friends are for life, cars come and go. So why not a

:31:16.:31:22.

dinner? Always a great pleasure, we love you on the BBC. Lots of luck,

:31:23.:31:27.

not just today but they World Cup coming up and lots of other things.

:31:28.:31:35.

Lots of romance going on. He was quite frank in that interview. I

:31:36.:31:41.

think Eddie loves him so much because he brought some money to

:31:42.:31:46.

Jordan in the early days. He gave an insight into how Ferrari operate

:31:47.:31:51.

their team. It is still spitting a bit. Jenson Button earlier in the

:31:52.:31:56.

programme said he thought he might get a podium. What do you think the

:31:57.:32:01.

chances are? Mixed weather conditions will always play to the

:32:02.:32:04.

strengths of those who don't have great pace. McLaren haven't had the

:32:05.:32:09.

car they are used to enjoying. They have to see this as an opportunity.

:32:10.:32:13.

As we get into these more stable conditions, there is more likelihood

:32:14.:32:19.

of the intermediate tyres. It remains to be seen, a short lap,

:32:20.:32:22.

different to a lot of the tracks, so let's see. Of course, he was the

:32:23.:32:31.

winner here last year. He met up with David to take us on a special

:32:32.:32:33.

lap of this glorious track. Jenson Button takes victory, a

:32:34.:32:47.

masterful performance. Jenson Button, all-round good guy,

:32:48.:32:51.

who we are in Brazil. Normally we do a track guide. We normally do the

:32:52.:33:01.

track guide on the circuit. But you have agreed to talk to us from in

:33:02.:33:06.

the car. I have indeed, we will see how it goes. I have tried it before.

:33:07.:33:11.

It should be all right. It is a bit wet out there, I might be a bit

:33:12.:33:16.

hesitant on the radio. As long as you talked me through it well, I

:33:17.:33:17.

will give good feedback. If you can install the car and start

:33:18.:33:38.

with a practice start, please. That was a great practice start. You

:33:39.:34:02.

have one here -- won here last year, if you would like to talk us through

:34:03.:34:09.

this historic racetrack. There is normally a lot of water on the

:34:10.:34:16.

circuit. Today is not too bad. Turn six and seven, the two quickest

:34:17.:34:24.

corners on the circuit. Going into turn eight when normally you would

:34:25.:34:31.

strike the kerb but not today. Quite a lot of grip. The hairpin is second

:34:32.:34:46.

gear, another quick left-hander before the last corner of the

:34:47.:34:55.

circuit. If you get a good... Important to get a good exit here

:34:56.:35:02.

because you have a lot of drag up the hill.

:35:03.:35:10.

Thanks for that, I hope my messages were nice and clear. Beautifully

:35:11.:35:16.

done, you have a future career in engineering. You understand the

:35:17.:35:21.

Scottish tongue over the radio foot of a great venue, one you have had a

:35:22.:35:26.

good success here in the past, what can we expect for the weekend? We

:35:27.:35:32.

can expect a lot of rain, it is forecast every day. If we can have

:35:33.:35:36.

it off and on, that would be nice, please. It is a fun circuit to

:35:37.:35:42.

race, the perfect way to end the season. This is where I have won the

:35:43.:35:46.

World Championship and we are hoping for a good result, it has been a

:35:47.:35:52.

tough year for us. On the plus side, you still have your looks, it

:35:53.:35:57.

is not all bad. A little bit hairy at the moment, it

:35:58.:36:04.

is an excuse to grow a beard because it is Movember. More bromance in

:36:05.:36:16.

Formula 1! It would be amazing to see Jenson Button, what a difference

:36:17.:36:23.

12 months has made. Can we really see it? The only thing in his favour

:36:24.:36:29.

is the weather. We know, one of the greatest races in my memory was in

:36:30.:36:35.

Canada where he beat Vettel on the last lap for a brilliant win. If he

:36:36.:36:39.

could do anything close to that and finish on the podium, we would be

:36:40.:36:44.

overjoyed. He did say I won some rain, I want it to stop, it looks

:36:45.:36:45.

like it is going his way. Anything is possible. You have an

:36:46.:36:56.

unpredictable weather pattern on a very tricky track, end of season

:36:57.:37:02.

reliability, engines and gearboxes getting towards the end. A lot can

:37:03.:37:10.

happen this afternoon and tomorrow. In terms of qualifying, it is always

:37:11.:37:14.

important to be on the front row but how vital is it to get pole position

:37:15.:37:19.

here? Overtaking here is pretty difficult. It is such a

:37:20.:37:24.

here? Overtaking here is pretty difficult. It is such short lap, I

:37:25.:37:27.

think the DRS has a smaller effect. In qualifying, a tense can cover two

:37:28.:37:37.

or three rows. In some races we may well think more about the racetrack

:37:38.:37:42.

and give up some good position. It is tricky into the first corner and

:37:43.:37:47.

Djourou want to try to keep out of trouble. -- and you really want to.

:37:48.:37:57.

Sebastian Vettel is walking from his hospitality, ready to prepare for

:37:58.:38:02.

qualifying. After eight years with Ferrari, it was time for Felipe

:38:03.:38:09.

Massa to hand back the red overalls and move on to pastures new.

:38:10.:38:19.

Cast your mind back to when you were first told you are going to be a

:38:20.:38:24.

Ferrari driver, what were those emotions like? It was a dream come

:38:25.:38:29.

true. One of the first go-kart I have, it was red. Brazilian people

:38:30.:38:36.

are close to Ferrari because of Senna. I always loved the red car,

:38:37.:38:41.

always loved Ferrari. I never believed I would drive for Friary in

:38:42.:38:44.

my career. I had a chance to drive for Ferrari for eight years. I never

:38:45.:38:51.

believed that. When you drive a Ferrari for the first time, it is a

:38:52.:39:03.

dream come true. To win in Brazil is like winning the championship. When

:39:04.:39:08.

Senna won it, his reaction was much more than when he won the

:39:09.:39:13.

championship. I remember I won in Brazil with a Brazilian overall,

:39:14.:39:16.

yellow and green, which is very special. Felipe Massa has done

:39:17.:39:22.

everything he needed to do, who will be the world champion of 2008? I did

:39:23.:39:29.

everything the best I could, I started in pole position, I won the

:39:30.:39:34.

race. I didn't lose the championship in Brazil, I lost it before.

:39:35.:39:42.

Hamilton is back in position again to become Formula 1 world champion!

:39:43.:39:52.

They both think they have won it. So many other races, especially

:39:53.:39:57.

Singapore, was unacceptable. What happened in Singapore, it cannot

:39:58.:40:06.

happen. 2009, a terrible accident, how much did that take out a view?

:40:07.:40:12.

Felipe Massa is in intensive care, he has had emergency surgery after

:40:13.:40:19.

suffering two skull fractures. I was not really in a good shape with a

:40:20.:40:25.

very hard Bridgestone tyres. I enjoy my life after the accident more than

:40:26.:40:31.

I was enjoying before, because you never believe something will happen

:40:32.:40:35.

to you. When something happens, you know that things can change in one

:40:36.:40:41.

minute. How do you feel about leaving Ferrari? A bit cheated?

:40:42.:40:47.

I have sosome friends here talking about my career, talking about the

:40:48.:40:52.

professional side, it is OK. I am happy to change, you know, to try to

:40:53.:40:57.

do different things and even starring from zero, I think it can

:40:58.:41:04.

be a very good restart. I do everything for this team.

:41:05.:41:09.

ON RADIO: Fernando is faster than you. You have won races and given a

:41:10.:41:15.

position to Fernando hen he needed it. You took a gearbox change. What

:41:16.:41:21.

more did Ferrari need do you do to be here next season? I don't know. I

:41:22.:41:25.

did a lot for the team. I always try to work 100% the way I am with the

:41:26.:41:30.

team, for sure. It won't be so easy to find another one like that.

:41:31.:41:38.

I am sure it won't B we are in the busy old paddock with the team boss

:41:39.:41:45.

Juan Pablo Montoya. Mixed emotion for you. Hes been a loyal soldier.

:41:46.:41:53.

N't absolutely, he is for sure. Not a normal weekend, because, in our

:41:54.:41:58.

life, we consider things that are slipping away, in a very, very easy

:41:59.:42:03.

but I think that this weekend, for us, for him, as you say it is very

:42:04.:42:07.

special. So we don't have to for get on top of the driver, that has made

:42:08.:42:15.

a lot of good pages of our history, there, it has been great. I was

:42:16.:42:20.

close to him in a moment, where race is not so important band I am

:42:21.:42:26.

pleased to see it is like the guy we know, he is also being loyal and

:42:27.:42:31.

sensible and attached to our family. You said slipping away, what has

:42:32.:42:36.

happened to the performance? That has slipped away. What has happened

:42:37.:42:40.

to Ferrari this year We didn't improve the car during the season,

:42:41.:42:44.

after, I would say from July on wards, we didn't get to the pace of

:42:45.:42:50.

development, no doubt about it, secondly we pay with a very heavy

:42:51.:42:54.

price, the change of the tyre, we were not able to, to understand the

:42:55.:42:59.

old tyres, and for sure we were better with the ones we had at the

:43:00.:43:09.

beginning of the season. Your President gave Fernando Alonso eight

:43:10.:43:14.

out of ten, what would you give him? These thing, I keep it for myself,

:43:15.:43:20.

and but in any case, as a team boss, I am always believe that our team

:43:21.:43:25.

and driver has to be considered the best. So that is my approach. It is

:43:26.:43:32.

not very motivational to be given eight out of ten when you are almost

:43:33.:43:35.

masking the problems, he is driving the wheels off their thing, isn't

:43:36.:43:42.

he? I said for me if he is the best, more than that... Ten out of ten! I

:43:43.:43:47.

think most people would be giving him ten out of ten. He is being

:43:48.:43:51.

honest, the car by his own standards has been really disappointing. Yes.

:43:52.:43:57.

We as fans we need to see Ferrari performing better not just because

:43:58.:44:00.

we need to report it but we need to be happy about it. We need to see

:44:01.:44:07.

Ferrari Ferrari there. You know me, I am not a man of great words, we

:44:08.:44:14.

need facts to say yes, but that is my approach and what I have asked of

:44:15.:44:19.

my engineer, better to keep their heads down on the work without

:44:20.:44:23.

saying anything special. Talking about next year and Kimi, he won't

:44:24.:44:27.

be happy to be number two. Are things going to hang in terms of how

:44:28.:44:32.

things are set up? Nothing has been changed since the history of

:44:33.:44:35.

Ferrari. The if you look at the record of my interviews, five years

:44:36.:44:40.

ago, six years ago, would have said the same thing. So nothing has

:44:41.:44:44.

changed. I know there is not a lot to say during the last race of the

:44:45.:44:50.

season. Stefano Domenicali, thank you for your time.

:44:51.:44:56.

100% chance of rain today, no, no whatever Sherlock because it is

:44:57.:45:00.

raining. And it is going to rain for this whole session, which is going

:45:01.:45:04.

to shake things up a bit. Don't forget, loads of information on our

:45:05.:45:09.

BBC website, and you can download the BBC sport phone app, all the

:45:10.:45:13.

latest result, column, news for you, if you are out and about we are

:45:14.:45:18.

leave, we will stream the race for your live.

:45:19.:45:23.

So, Felipe moves to William, and a lot of people are happy about that.

:45:24.:45:27.

It has been a good partling of the ways. But he is such a cool guy.

:45:28.:45:33.

Massa would fit into any team. He is very easy, very honest, very quick,

:45:34.:45:39.

and if you remember, we said maybe the shackles will be released from

:45:40.:45:42.

him when it is found out that what he is doing and how his Championship

:45:43.:45:45.

is going, because when he finally realised he was no longer required

:45:46.:45:50.

at Ferrari, I think his game absolutely went sky high, he

:45:51.:45:55.

performed better he raced better, certainly qualified better, and I

:45:56.:45:59.

think he is preparing himself for a big onslaught. I think he will have

:46:00.:46:03.

a good season next season at Williams. No Nikki, you won't

:46:04.:46:07.

interrupt me. That is OK. He is trying to distract me. I hope not!

:46:08.:46:12.

We are back. I think Massa, it is a big turn round time for Williams

:46:13.:46:16.

too. They have a lot to achieve, because nay have been floundering

for the last number of years and this could be a big change. They

:46:21.:46:25.

have five points this season, which isn't great. Felipe, he could have

:46:26.:46:36.

his hands full with Valtteri Bottas. . They need them to buevens each

:46:37.:46:40.

other. This is how great teams emerge. It doesn't usually happen

:46:41.:46:44.

when there is a great driver and a make up driver. That is why I used

:46:45.:46:49.

to disagree with what went on at Ferrari. He denied having number two

:46:50.:46:53.

drivers, we have spoken to two drivers that admitted they were

:46:54.:46:56.

number two. Who are you going to understand? I am not going to say

:46:57.:47:01.

who would you believe because dom is an honest guy. There is no doubt

:47:02.:47:08.

Fernando Alonso was favoured as was shuem. -- Schumacher. Clear is

:47:09.:47:24.

Claire Williamers. -- Williams. Can I go here, so I can paddle my mic.

:47:25.:47:31.

Crazy paddock here. It is bonkers. Well done last weekend for the

:47:32.:47:35.

points, first of all but looking forward to next year, Felipe Massa

:47:36.:47:38.

coming to your team. Tell us your thoughts? So excited. I can't wait

:47:39.:47:43.

for this season to be over. It has been difficult for everybody and

:47:44.:47:48.

Austin was fantastic. Valtteri was great to get the points but we are

:47:49.:47:52.

looking forward to next year. We have done work behind the scenes,

:47:53.:47:56.

and Felipe is joining us in the line up, which we are excited about. He

:47:57.:48:00.

brings a huge amount of experience, talent, he is a proven race winner,

:48:01.:48:03.

we are just looking for war to getting started. It has been a long

:48:04.:48:09.

time since he has won a race, five years but hopefully he can change

:48:10.:48:12.

things. I think we have just said, you need him as much as he needs

:48:13.:48:17.

you, he needs to refind his own career, find some races, have you

:48:18.:48:22.

got, I mean you have Pat, Pat Symonds so we love and know what a

:48:23.:48:28.

great winner he was when he was with Benton, can he deliver the car for

:48:29.:48:32.

you? Pat has joined us in Augusts. He was able to come in quickly, and

:48:33.:48:37.

he has made so many changes, with the structure of the team, so I

:48:38.:48:40.

think he can absolutely have an impact on next year's car, I know he

:48:41.:48:44.

is looking forward to 2015 and that car, because that is the greatest

:48:45.:48:48.

impact he can have. Tell me, you talked about him coming in August.

:48:49.:48:52.

When did you start working on next year's project? The end of last year

:48:53.:48:56.

because of the regulation change, next year we had to start work on

:48:57.:49:01.

the 2014 car further in advance we normally would.

:49:02.:49:04.

In terms of the turn round at William, have you noticed or can you

:49:05.:49:08.

feel commercial activity, can you find new sponsors that you think may

:49:09.:49:13.

be coming to the team, or is that still dark territory for you guys?

:49:14.:49:17.

It is not. We are lucky, we always have a strong pipeline of prospects

:49:18.:49:21.

that we are talking to. This year has been no different. Considering

:49:22.:49:25.

our ontrack performance sh you may think that is a surprise, we have

:49:26.:49:29.

great heritage, we have a great story to sell. We have the advance

:49:30.:49:34.

engineering business which lots of prospects like to get working with.

:49:35.:49:38.

We are working with batteries and energy efficiency, that is

:49:39.:49:43.

interesting for people. But we hope he have some interesting new

:49:44.:49:47.

announcements coming up. We have signed a new partner though we won't

:49:48.:49:51.

be talking about it just yet. We will look forward to announcing it

:49:52.:49:57.

next year. We look forward to that. Not very long to go before three

:49:58.:50:06.

qualifying sessions for you, who you got down for pole position? Lewis

:50:07.:50:10.

Hamilton. Looking forward to this one, it is

:50:11.:50:15.

going to stay rainy boys! The final event of the 2013 F1

:50:16.:50:40.

season has brought us to the Grande Premio Do Brasil. A country which

:50:41.:50:47.

has produced champions of the past. How can we forget last year? It lies

:50:48.:50:51.

in sprawling suburbs of one of the biggest cities in the world. Sao

:50:52.:50:55.

Paulo and while I won't see any titles decided here this time, the

:50:56.:51:01.

lay out of the 2.7 mill, 4.3 kilometre track invites exciting

:51:02.:51:05.

racing. The first sector features the Senna S and the first of the DRS

:51:06.:51:11.

zones. Sector two starts fast and flowing and tightens up into a

:51:12.:51:20.

series of near hairpins, the next section demands horsepower, where

:51:21.:51:23.

DRS is active. The fastest lap in qualifying last year was set by

:51:24.:51:26.

Lewis Hamilton in a McLaren, but that was fully dry, and so far this

:51:27.:51:30.

weekend, the track hasn't been dry for any part of free pack tis, so we

:51:31.:51:34.

are going to a bit of new territory. It is not dry at the moment, but it

:51:35.:51:39.

has stopped raining. That will give the teams a chance to dial the cars

:51:40.:51:43.

in, but remember, however they set the cars up for qualifying is how

:51:44.:51:46.

the car has to run in the race tomorrow.

:51:47.:51:50.

Yes, of course the only change they are allowed do is make some changes

:51:51.:51:55.

to the cooling of the car, they will need to blank off the brakes to

:51:56.:51:59.

generate the same temperatures, a load of enen I is taken out the lap

:52:00.:52:03.

because you are running slower, otherwise the main mechanics of --

:52:04.:52:08.

managerles of the car remains the same. Tom Clarkson is in the pits.

:52:09.:52:12.

How are things at the moment? It is dry, as you say, but I have been

:52:13.:52:15.

talking to some of the teams about what you do with the set up, and

:52:16.:52:19.

they are saying you have to go dry this afternoon, the weather forecast

:52:20.:52:23.

is for it to rain during this session, but a couple of the guys on

:52:24.:52:27.

the pit wall, they have given up looking at the radar, the rain is so

:52:28.:52:32.

unpredictable, all they know it is due in the next hour, and they will

:52:33.:52:35.

put a dry set up on the cars because tomorrow the forecast is better.

:52:36.:52:40.

Right. Well, as you can see from the puddle, it is not, well, there is a

:52:41.:52:44.

bit of rain there. We will keep an eye on it. In the Drivers'

:52:45.:52:48.

Championship Sebastian Vettel has wrapped up the win and Alonso has

:52:49.:52:52.

wrapped up second place. Still a bit of a tussle going foreign third

:52:53.:52:56.

place, Lewis Hamilton currently third, could still be beaten by Mark

:52:57.:53:01.

Webber, Raikkonen lies fourth but is likely to lose it, as Eddie is

:53:14.:53:17.

looking is the battle for second. Mercedes, Ferrari and Lotus,

:53:18.:53:22.

although Mercedes have their edge of 15 points it can change quickly when

:53:23.:53:27.

you have two cars scoring. It can change things quickly, at the bat

back the battle for tenth. Marussia have the tenth place

:53:39.:53:44.

can change. It has changed in the last five laps. Special crash helmet

there for Felipe Massa as he celebrates his time at Ferrari, the

:53:50.:53:53.

last Grand Prix for the Brazilian in the Ferrari team, he has twice won

:53:54.:53:57.

this Grand Prix, so, and the third time he could have would be won it

:53:58.:54:02.

he handed the victory to Raikkonen. He went on to win the Championship

:54:03.:54:07.

in that 2007 season. Interestingly on the radio Charles Pic at Caterham

:54:08.:54:14.

are told the conditions are going to get worse. Several teams are sending

:54:15.:54:18.

their drives to the end of the pit lane. There is a compromise in

:54:19.:54:22.

cueing up at the end of the pit lane. You start to lose some

:54:23.:54:25.

temperature, surface temperature in the tyre, they have come out of the

:54:26.:54:29.

blanket, not a at the same temperature you would put the slick

:54:30.:54:32.

tyres but as we wait for the light to go green, there is 45 seconds or

:54:33.:54:38.

so beforehand, you start to lose the heat, Red Bull choosing to leave

:54:39.:54:43.

those tyres wrapped up snug in the blanket, and Sebastian Vettel

:54:44.:54:47.

getting ready. Didn't do a lot of laps in the free practise this

:54:48.:54:51.

morning. I think he did about four in total. Ferrari and Mercedes

:54:52.:54:55.

didn't do anything at all. So different strategies being run. You

:54:56.:55:00.

see the intermediate tyre there, the Greenside wall limited tread

:55:01.:55:03.

pattern, that gives stability to the block when you are on a track which

:55:04.:55:07.

is damp but not a lot of standing water. That is ideal, not too much

:55:08.:55:14.

standing water. The risk of aqua plaining is reduce. The green light

:55:15.:55:24.

indicating the beginning of the final session of qualifying in 2013.

:55:25.:55:31.

There are still some schools to be settled and they are all trying to

:55:32.:55:35.

get out on track first, the because they expect things are going to

:55:36.:55:40.

worsen. The intermediate tyre is the tyre of choice for the teams. It was

:55:41.:55:45.

the choice because it was windy for the last half an hour, a bit of wind

:55:46.:55:52.

and no rain. Then it started to spit a bit. You have to get a banker lap

:55:53.:55:56.

and intermediate is the right tyre there will be lot of gambles. You

:55:57.:56:01.

are limited on the number of sets that you have and if it carries on

:56:02.:56:06.

drying up, you don't want to waste your intermediate tyres on a race

:56:07.:56:10.

that might be damp. That is the problem.

:56:11.:56:16.

RADIO: It will be important to get through some of these cars. Every

:56:17.:56:25.

car is on and out lap at the moment. Nico Rosberg being told to get past

:56:26.:56:30.

the slower cars. He is looking forward to that pole position. In

:56:31.:56:35.

the wet, that is the place to be. You don't want all of that spray. We

:56:36.:56:40.

are seeing dry patches on the track so this will probably be the

:56:41.:56:44.

quickest part of qualifying. It is the first time we have seen any dry

:56:45.:56:49.

patches all weekend. It may surprise a few of the teams that haven't had

:56:50.:56:56.

a chance to send out a spotter. There have just been some

:56:57.:56:58.

promotional laps for a local car company. Those who have left no

:56:59.:57:03.

stone unturned will be well aware that there is some dry running

:57:04.:57:11.

available in the middle of turn ten. A bit sideways for a Lewis Hamilton,

:57:12.:57:15.

the first to go on to a flying lap. He took pole position 12 months ago.

:57:16.:57:23.

He has never won at Interlagos. He is dropping down to the lowest part

:57:24.:57:27.

of the circuit. The track is almost on three separate levels. He now

:57:28.:57:34.

climbs slightly into the middle level, fast on the entry here and

:57:35.:57:39.

then it starts to tighten. It is difficult on the circuit because you

:57:40.:57:42.

are breaking and turning into the apex at the same time. As we go into

:57:43.:57:56.

this turn ten, it is another one of these long, sweeping loads as you

:57:57.:58:03.

brake and then you have this fantastic drop for the elevation

:58:04.:58:09.

change, and into the last corner, where Ayrton Senna spun his Williams

:58:10.:58:16.

in 1994. It is a tricky turn and then up through the series of kinks

that take you up through the start finish line. He was a great fan of

already talking about the possibility of dry tyres. Yesterday

when the track was a bit wetter, they were getting about ten laps out

:00:31.:00:36.

of each set of intermediate tyres. If the track conditions don't get

:00:37.:00:40.

worse during Q1, they might be forced to use a second set of

:00:41.:00:48.

intermediates. Romain Grosjean, he was not impressed. It is a sort of

:00:49.:00:55.

unwritten rule, don't dilly-dally around the apex.

:00:56.:01:03.

You are leaning on the front tyres, it is easy to drift into that car

:01:04.:01:14.

and cause an incident. This is all about getting in the top 16. Fastest

:01:15.:01:26.

is Lewis Hamilton. There is a long time to go in this session, just

:01:27.:01:30.

under 14 minutes as we ride on board with Mark Webber. It is the last few

:01:31.:01:36.

moments that could prove crucial, depending on how much rain we get. A

:01:37.:01:43.

bit of traffic, the Sauber, he gets out of the way. Up ahead of him,

:01:44.:01:51.

Alonso. Don't expect any problems. Mark needs to get a clean lap to

:01:52.:01:56.

make himself a bit more comfortable. The rain is coming down hard, he

:01:57.:02:02.

could be in trouble. We might have 30 minutes to go but it could be

:02:03.:02:06.

relevant as it gets more slippery -- 13 minutes to go. He has a decent

:02:07.:02:13.

bit of traction, is he going to have enough time to move up the order? He

:02:14.:02:25.

is 1.4 seconds off the top time. It should put him in tenth or 11th,

:02:26.:02:30.

this will improve his time. He needs to get out of the bottom group. It

:02:31.:02:39.

is enough, he moves up to ninth. The conditions are worsening but Webb as

:02:40.:02:40.

many as are confirmation from Mercedes. Let's

:02:41.:03:01.

have happened with Kovalainen. This is coming up to turn ten, the

:03:02.:03:09.

so-called duckbill. They have some issues with the Caterham.

:03:10.:03:16.

The problem with impeding that we, -- come across quite often, in this

:03:17.:03:25.

situation, they are all trying to get their lap in. If they are all on

:03:26.:03:30.

a timed lap there is no such thing. If someone is on and out lap or in

:03:31.:03:35.

lap and driving below pace, that is impeding. In the case of this,

:03:36.:03:42.

Kovalainen just following Pic around. The two Caterhams circling

:03:43.:03:56.

in close proximity. It could be dangerous and Vergne is in the drop

:03:57.:04:01.

zone. Usually one of the fastest in the wet. He has out-qualified

:04:02.:04:04.

Ricciardo in most of the wet sessions this year. He is down in

:04:05.:04:13.

terms of comparison with Ricciardo. He might have just been out of

:04:14.:04:17.

position. It will be interesting to see if he goes with a fresh set of

:04:18.:04:28.

intermediates. RADIO: Why did we wait, there was

:04:29.:04:35.

rain coming? Don't worry about that, get yourself ready. It is a good

:04:36.:04:42.

question, why did they wait? We can't forget what Paul di Resta did

:04:43.:04:46.

at Spa, you have got to read the conditions and expect them to

:04:47.:04:53.

worsen. It is a good point, Jean-Eric Vergne has been good in

:04:54.:04:57.

these conditions relative to his team-mate. For whatever reason, his

:04:58.:05:06.

side of the garage, for which he has to take responsible a tee as well,

tyre. There are still nine minutes to go in Q1. He has always been good

:06:04.:06:13.

in the wet conditions, Kovalainen. If it now starts to dry up, it could

:06:14.:06:17.

all change again. How are things in the pit lane? I can only judge the

:06:18.:06:26.

amount of rain by the blooms of spraying -- plumes of spray.

:06:27.:06:35.

Hulkenberg is a real specialist around here. Sauber have struggled

:06:36.:06:43.

with their car, they had to throw an extra set of tyres at the

:06:44.:06:47.

performance. They were saying before this session, if they get a decent

:06:48.:06:51.

result, it is all thanks to Nico Hulkenberg. It was a very strong

:06:52.:07:00.

performance. Has he managed to move himself up? No, he hasn't. Where

Kovalainen found some time, Gutierrez has not yet bound it. Turn

damp. Intermediates, they don't quite have the tread depth or the

:07:21.:07:26.

block movement. Once you get more water down the grip drops away. He

:07:27.:07:36.

has done a run of eight laps in all so if he feels he is up against it,

:07:37.:07:41.

maybe the only option is to put a fresh of tyres on. Quite a lot of

:07:42.:07:48.

work on the wheel, he is trying to use wider alliance to find more

:07:49.:07:52.

grip. He has not improved on his first sector. You try to get the car

:07:53.:07:59.

as straight as possible before accelerating and when you get to

:08:00.:08:03.

full power, you start to drop down. This is flat in dry conditions, not

:08:04.:08:11.

so in these. He has gone a bit wide and as a consequence he got the

:08:12.:08:15.

oversteer on exit and then this long drag up the hill. Interesting to see

:08:16.:08:19.

if he can keep flat through the kink. Sounded as if he was lacking

:08:20.:08:32.

confidence. He is down in 19th position so it looks as if Gutierrez

:08:33.:08:39.

could be slipping out in Q1. He got a bit out of shape on a couple of

:08:40.:08:43.

places and hitting on to the kerbs will not help them. When you run out

:08:44.:08:49.

beyond the white lines onto the kerb, you need to lift off the

:08:50.:08:57.

power. You don't want a Grand Prix car to get sideways, it is not

:08:58.:09:09.

designed to absorb the slip angle. Rear-wheel drive, no front wheel

drive to help you around the corner. Mark Slade giving the signal to stop

:09:32.:09:55.

is getting on. A good opportunity for the drivers and smaller teams at

:09:56.:10:00.

the back to show their skills. When you look at the history of this

:10:01.:10:04.

book, drivers who have had exceptional skills have been able to

:10:05.:10:11.

take a step forward -- history of the sport. In Q1 at Spa they gambled

:10:12.:10:18.

on slicks and they had three cars into Q2, which was a good gamble. I

:10:19.:10:22.

am not sure it is going to work today, I think there is too much

:10:23.:10:32.

rain. He has done he is two seconds slower than his previous best.

:10:33.:10:37.

Gather that Gutierrez got a new set of intermediates on his car, so she

:10:38.:10:40.

back out. They are having to throw the tyres that are in the drop zone,

:10:41.:10:45.

hoping they will drag a time out before that clock clicks down to

:10:46.:10:48.

zero, there is only four-and-a-half minutes to go, and there is not much

:10:49.:10:53.

sign of the rain stopping, so it is pretty difficult. This will give

:10:54.:10:57.

them a couple of time laps, by the time they get round. Jean-Eric

:10:58.:11:00.

Vergne is going to open his lap. Look at the spray. So certainly

:11:01.:11:04.

visibly wetter than at the start of the session. Yes, now Vergne is

:11:05.:11:09.

going to need a very good lap to try an get out of that drop zone. He has

:11:10.:11:18.

to try and push Maldonado down, in fact Ricciardo is not much further

You go in, it is uphill double apex right-hander, seven and eight.

:11:44.:11:48.

Then you have the difficult breaking down into the turns there, and

:11:49.:11:52.

immediately you are dropping down into nine. Try and get the car as

:11:53.:11:57.

straight as possible. You use what the drivers would call carting line,

:11:58.:12:01.

you know, the lines you learn back in carting as a kid and you try and

:12:02.:12:05.

keep off the classic dry line. That is where all the rubber is laid

:12:06.:12:10.

down, it becomes slick when you have wet conditions like this. Some

:12:11.:12:16.

places you are committed to having to cross over the racing line, and

:12:17.:12:21.

just have to feather the throttle at that point.

:12:22.:12:24.

Vergne desperate the try and get into the second part of qualifying.

:12:25.:12:27.

This is not working out, according to plan. He is not going to make it

:12:28.:12:32.

on the lap. Half a second away from what he needed. And for the guy who

:12:33.:12:36.

was acknowledged to be one of the best in the rain, we spoke to

:12:37.:12:39.

Christian Horner this morning and he was saying how impressive Jean-Eric

:12:40.:12:42.

Vergne usually is in the wet condition, it was purely by not

:12:43.:12:46.

having him out there at the correct time. Ricciardo is out there as

:12:47.:12:50.

well, so he has gone out on a new set of intermediates. Vergne has

:12:51.:12:54.

been told do a cool down lap and go for it again. Even on the

:12:55.:12:58.

intermediates you have to look at after the tyres. His lap time was

:12:59.:13:09.

quicker than Daniel Ricciardos. : He hasn't been able to get in front of

:13:10.:13:15.

Ricciardos in the majority of the qualifiers. It is one of the biggest

:13:16.:13:24.

gaps between tame mates. Big year for Jean-Eric Vergne next

:13:25.:13:27.

season, got a new team-mate alongside him, if he is not able to

:13:28.:13:32.

show him the way it could be the end of his career. Slight improvement

:13:33.:13:36.

from Gutierrez. He can do another lap that is quicker and push

:13:37.:13:41.

Maldonado down into the drop zone. Bottas is comfortably in there, he

:13:42.:13:45.

is 11th. Kovalainen has done a couple of green n that sector it is

:13:46.:13:49.

his personal best, so looking like he is going to improve on hiss 14th

:13:50.:13:54.

place. It means the track is slightly improving, with a

:13:55.:13:57.

minute-and-a-half to go in this session, Kovalainen still trying to

:13:58.:14:01.

get himself out of trouble. He goes up to fifth there is real

:14:02.:14:05.

opportunity here, for those in the drop zone. What that means for the

:14:06.:14:10.

likes of Massa. Sutil, Ricciardo. Ricciardo and Maldonado is out

:14:11.:14:14.

there. Sutil is out there. But Massa is not out there.

:14:15.:14:19.

ON RADIO: Improving in all sectors. That is what Vergne wants to hear.

:14:20.:14:23.

How is he looking? He is doing a slow lap at the moment. So it will

:14:24.:14:28.

come down to the last lap. He has just gone on to it He will get the

:14:29.:14:32.

checker at the end of it. One lap will separate him from going out in

:14:33.:14:36.

the first part of qualifying or getting to play a bit more this

:14:37.:14:42.

afternoon. I guess you could say Massa should be safe. Wait to see

:14:43.:14:45.

whether the Caterhams and the Marussias can do anything. I don't

:14:46.:14:48.

think it is likely. Both Caterhams are in the pits. I am surprised they

:14:49.:14:53.

have decided -- decided to stay there. They have decided to save

:14:54.:14:58.

their tyres. Maldonado has not been able to improve. Is out there and so

:14:59.:15:03.

he has one more chance. Vergne is on his last chance. You are watching

:15:04.:15:08.

it. He has potential. Look look to the right of the screen you can see

:15:09.:15:14.

he is in second gear. He is currently three tenths slower than

:15:15.:15:16.

his best. He has done a personal best in thes first sector, gaining

:15:17.:15:20.

time now, he is just about two tenths up. Looks up, he will be

:15:21.:15:25.

glancing down at his lap delta, every, he is half a second up.

:15:26.:15:31.

ON RADIO: Kovalainen is improving. He did 26.2. You do one more lap.

:15:32.:15:37.

Vergne is improving. He is. He is about five or six tenths faster,

:15:38.:15:43.

that is enough to do a 26.9 if he can keep it together. Ricciardo is

:15:44.:15:49.

on a lap too. So the team-mates hoping to get through to the next

:15:50.:15:53.

part of qualifying. Has Vergne done enough, he goes 15th. Ricciardo is

:15:54.:15:58.

about to see the chequered flag. He is not as quick but he is still in

:15:59.:16:04.

there, it depends on Gutierrez, as to whether Ricciardo is going to

:16:05.:16:09.

survive. Maldonado is still going. Maldonado should still drag a lap

:16:10.:16:12.

but I don't think it is a particularly quick lap from him and

:16:13.:16:17.

am not sure Gutierrez is going quick enough. Maldonado crosses the line.

:16:18.:16:22.

He stays 17th. So he is out. That is it from Maldonado. One Williams has

:16:23.:16:26.

failed to make it through to the second part of qualifying and

:16:27.:16:29.

Gutierrez has failed. You have to say well done to Jean-Eric Vergne,

:16:30.:16:33.

he did it. Gutierrez and Maldonado failed, Vergne has scraped through

:16:34.:16:37.

and both Toro Rossos are in there, but we have lost a Williams and a

:16:38.:16:40.

Sauber. Ten out of ten for Vergne. He

:16:41.:16:45.

handled the pressure. It looks like he was slipping away in the garage,

:16:46.:16:53.

but finds himself sitting. A couple of tenth quicker than his tame mate.

:16:54.:16:57.

Maldonado's difficult year with Williams coming to an en. He is

:16:58.:17:02.

leaving the team. He wasn't very complimentary after qualifying last

:17:03.:17:05.

time. At the end of the day, that was all about being on track at the

:17:06.:17:09.

right time, and trying to get a quick lap to the end. He couldn't do

:17:10.:17:15.

it and he is out. So we have lost, listen.

:17:16.:17:19.

ON RADIO: P 17 Vergne jumped us on that round. Very matter-of-fact, but

:17:20.:17:24.

that is the case. Maldonado is out, so is Gutierrez. That is

:17:25.:17:28.

disappointing for the Sauber driver. Charles Pic the fastest of the young

:17:29.:17:33.

team driver so Caterham car, both will be ahead on the grid of

:17:34.:17:38.

Marussia with Bianchi just a bit quicker than Max Chilton.

:17:39.:17:44.

If ever it was about timing the track started off; everybody went

:17:45.:17:50.

out and it got worse, you have got to really say well done Toro Rosso.

:17:51.:17:55.

Look, well done everybody. That is what I say, these are treacherous

:17:56.:17:59.

conditions, the fact that we have had stopped, the fact that every

:18:00.:18:03.

driver has driven impeccably, but some quicker than others, but there

:18:04.:18:08.

has not been a big sense of surprises there. It is pretty much

:18:09.:18:11.

what we expect. Jean-Eric Vergne played it very well. He was

:18:12.:18:15.

obviously frustrated. He had one chance to get it right and he did do

:18:16.:18:18.

that. Here are the conditions you are talking about. Visibility also

:18:19.:18:24.

awful. I don't know why it is but every year Brazil throws up

:18:25.:18:28.

something like this. It rain in the qualifying or the race or half way

:18:29.:18:31.

through the race, that is why it is so exciting and I love this place

:18:32.:18:35.

here because the track is different for those people who want to know

:18:36.:18:39.

about it. It is anticlockwise which is a different set of circumstances

:18:40.:18:42.

for the driver, their necks and everything, how they approach it.

:18:43.:18:46.

Then you add the mix into the wet condition, look at the big, long,

:18:47.:18:51.

white line, they are so slippery, that is what the driver must make

:18:52.:18:56.

sure, their rare tyre does not go anywhere close to that or they will

:18:57.:19:01.

go round. That is about brave Friday the driver but strategy from the

:19:02.:19:05.

team. There has been times from your point of view as a team principal

:19:06.:19:09.

where you think we will go now, later it is tough to call, isn't it?

:19:10.:19:14.

Yes, but you form a view, in my case and we will hear from Gary in a

:19:15.:19:18.

second, Gary, myself, Trevor, we used to talk about these thing, so

:19:19.:19:22.

in other words we didn't even have to speak much, we would nod and that

:19:23.:19:28.

is it. You had an idea and you had a good feel for it and anyone who was

:19:29.:19:34.

in racing it came naturally. Most teams will have been geared up for

:19:35.:19:39.

this. When you are in a situation like this and you can see what is

:19:40.:19:43.

supposed the happen, is it better to stick your head out and listen to

:19:44.:19:46.

your spotter and see what they are saying? We always had a spotter.

:19:47.:19:50.

People think I was daft but we used to have guys in fields spots which

:19:51.:19:55.

way the rain was coming, and honestly, it plays in our favour on

:19:56.:20:01.

several occasion, so I am sure the system now with all the computers

:20:02.:20:07.

they probably don't need it but if it was me I would have my guy in the

:20:08.:20:12.

field. There was a problem with traffic. Maldonado and Mark, that is

:20:13.:20:16.

very difficult isn't it You are going to get that. I come back to

:20:17.:20:21.

the thing what Ist -- started with. Compliments to everybody because I

:20:22.:20:24.

think the drivers behave brilliantly in very difficult circumstances. Let

:20:25.:20:29.

us look, we can probably see this, this is Grosjean and Max Chilton

:20:30.:20:35.

ahead of him. It is really tough, isn't it. I don't know why Grosjean

:20:36.:20:40.

is putting his hand up there. Max Chilton is entitled to it. He is

:20:41.:20:44.

giving the outside line and Grosjean let the car slide out. He probably

:20:45.:20:48.

had too much speed. What has he got to do? He is paying his money, he is

:20:49.:20:52.

a driver, Max Chilton is doing everything right. He hasn't impeded

:20:53.:20:57.

him, and I don't understand why his hand is going up like that, it was

:20:58.:21:02.

unnecessary. We have about 90 seconds to go until the session

:21:03.:21:06.

starts. This is going to be ability timing. Let us catch up. Here is Q2.

:21:07.:21:13.

Your commentary team. Sebastian Vettel was second fastest to Lewis

:21:14.:21:17.

Hamilton in that first part. Very light rain expected for Q2 says the

:21:18.:21:21.

computer. We have a few cars ready to go out an track at the very

:21:22.:21:27.

beginning. Most Mercedes are at the end of the pit lane. So they are

:21:28.:21:30.

taking no chances. This time Toro Rosso making sure they are getting

:21:31.:21:33.

their cars down to the end of testify pit lane. You just don't

:21:34.:21:42.

know. As we look to the right of the circuit which is beyond turn four it

:21:43.:21:46.

looks like there is a lot of rain and you look to the left and it is

:21:47.:21:50.

clear. I can't see any flags but looking at the indication on the

:21:51.:21:55.

timing screens it looks like that is weather that has passed us over.

:21:56.:21:59.

What is behind us? The rain is pick pg up a bit in the paddock. It is

:22:00.:22:10.

not damning the thousands ya. , damping the enthusiasm.

:22:11.:22:14.

Maybe it is an opportunity for Ferrari to do something special.

:22:15.:22:20.

Second part of qualifying is under way, and the first cars out of are

:22:21.:22:25.

the two Mercedes of Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton. We have Kovalainen's

:22:26.:22:30.

Lotus, both Toro Rossos this time, of Vergne and Ricciardo, and it was

:22:31.:22:35.

clear if you weren't out early you were were struggling. Vergne only

:22:36.:22:40.

just made it through. Definitely the beginning was the best. I have to

:22:41.:22:44.

put my back slapping machine on Kovalainen. That was a fast lap. It

:22:45.:22:48.

shows if you have the commitment and determination you can pull it out.

:22:49.:22:52.

That is a very good point. His lap was very good. I wonder if he is

:22:53.:22:56.

going to be able to repeat that in the second part of qualifying. What

:22:57.:23:00.

else impressed you from the list that we saw there? If you look at

:23:01.:23:05.

everybody and those condition, pushing as add hard as they did. So

:23:06.:23:10.

everyone has respect for the circuit. This is where the pressure

:23:11.:23:15.

starts. If the forecast is right it will be the end of testify session

:23:16.:23:18.

that count, you have to put a banker in but it will be the end you have

:23:19.:23:24.

to get it right. You are probably having to save an intermediate set.

:23:25.:23:28.

Yes, if you get in the top ten you will have to go again. So you have

:23:29.:23:32.

to look after them. Onboard with Mark Webber so we are looking into

:23:33.:23:36.

his visor there, different camera angle to the one we normally have,

:23:37.:23:40.

but great to enjoy his last race with him, looking straight back in

:23:41.:23:45.

his face, Fernando Alonso's girlfriend in the Ferrari pit

:23:46.:23:48.

waiting to see what Fernando can do. No front row starts for Fernando

:23:49.:23:52.

Alonso, but he performs well in these slippery condition, we saw

:23:53.:23:57.

last year he got a couple of pole positions in these situation, so I

:23:58.:24:01.

wonder whether he will do anything this time? Doesn't look like free

:24:02.:24:07.

practise, we have seen Nico Rosberg power steering through. It doesn't

:24:08.:24:12.

look like Ferrari has unleashed some performance, unless he finds himself

:24:13.:24:16.

on an out of track condition qualifying sessions where he just

:24:17.:24:20.

gets that small window of performance, I think we are more

:24:21.:24:23.

likely to see a Mercedes pushing for pole position. Nico Rosberg was

:24:24.:24:28.

quickest in both sessions in the wet on Friday. Hamilton is behind him on

:24:29.:24:33.

track. Hamilton system a fraction quicker but by only 900th --s of a

:24:34.:24:39.

second. Kovalainen is about a tenth off the pace. More than a tenth off

:24:40.:24:43.

the pace of Hamilton, through the first sector. This middle sector

:24:44.:24:48.

probably defines the lap time in these condition, would you say? The

:24:49.:24:52.

middle sector so crucial when its slippery is probably going to have

:24:53.:24:56.

more of an effect on your overall lap time? ? The middle sector has

:24:57.:25:01.

been where the main part is won or lost. You can compromise in wet and

:25:02.:25:07.

dry conditions but running lighter downforce which gives you

:25:08.:25:09.

granddaughter speed in this part of the lap, but you start to struggle.

:25:10.:25:14.

He is faster than Hamilton by half a second. So let us see what the lap

:25:15.:25:18.

time is right. I think that Hamilton has lost a bit in the mid sector. I

:25:19.:25:25.

am not sure he can beat that lap. Is he faster? No, he is not. That half

:25:26.:25:30.

a second, he gained back a little in the final sector but he lost nearly

:25:31.:25:37.

five tenths. That could be just confidence in the car. It could be

:25:38.:25:42.

the difference of set up based on what they expect the race conditions

:25:43.:25:45.

tomorrow. This is only part of the story of course. It is all about

:25:46.:25:48.

trying to get the points in the Grand Prix on Sunday. Jean-Eric

:25:49.:25:57.

Vergne has gone forth, Ricciardo has gone a fraction quicker in third. We

:25:58.:26:03.

are getting used to this on-board shop for one of the last times, the

:26:04.:26:08.

distinctive crash helmet design of Marco Weber. -- Marco Weber. -- Mark

:26:09.:26:26.

Webber. He dropped back, the two Red Bull is running quite close

:26:27.:26:31.

together. He is quickest at this point. The Red Bull ahead of the two

:26:32.:26:41.

Mercedes by just under a tenth of a second. All you are trying to do is

:26:42.:26:47.

get in the top ten here, it is not about being fastest, you need to

:26:48.:26:52.

look after the tyres. Kovalainen is only 10th, he needs to find a bit

:26:53.:26:59.

more pace to be safe and secure. You always cut the pit lane entry line,

:27:00.:27:05.

it is standard practice here. A good lap, perfect conditions for him to

:27:06.:27:09.

show his skills. He did a good job in Austin. It was a power slide from

:27:10.:27:16.

the Force India of Adrian Sutil, he has two lift out of it. He is

:27:17.:27:23.

currently 10th fastest, Valtteri Bottas. Just seeing the vortices of

:27:24.:27:33.

the aerodynamics, a lot more humidity in these conditions. You

:27:34.:27:42.

can visibly CVS flow. Jenson -- see the airflow. Webber has been told we

:27:43.:27:52.

expect this light rain for ten minutes. Can Hulkenberg it into the

:27:53.:28:01.

top ten again? Webber goes third. It should put him safe. As long as the

:28:02.:28:06.

track conditions don't hugely change. This is Hamilton climbing up

:28:07.:28:17.

the hill. I don't expect this last sector to be quickest of all but it

:28:18.:28:23.

should be an improvement on the lap. He goes third, but no position

:28:24.:28:37.

change. He was three tenths of the best we have seen so far and slower

:28:38.:28:41.

than what he managed earlier. Both Toro Rossos in the top ten so

:28:42.:28:57.

far. Neither of the Force Indias in the top ten. Hulkenberg is still

:28:58.:29:16.

down in 15th. It looks like the top three are just doing cool laps. None

:29:17.:29:27.

of them improving. They are either looking for track position or trying

:29:28.:29:35.

to cool the tyres. This is not a timed lap in terms of him trying to

:29:36.:29:39.

improve. All using the intermediate tyres, giving enough water

:29:40.:29:43.

clearance, there is not too much standing water. What happened to

:29:44.:29:50.

Kovalainen? Maybe a mistake. Loses the back end of the car. Always a

:29:51.:29:54.

compromise to try to get enough back to load. A big power slide, drift

:29:55.:30:03.

off the back of the breaks from Paul di Resta. -- the brakes. You are

:30:04.:30:12.

trying to avoid a snap of the rear. You have to take out front wing when

:30:13.:30:16.

you put the intermediate tyres on and it takes load of the front axle

:30:17.:30:21.

and takes away the tendency for it to want to snap. Then you are trying

:30:22.:30:26.

to control the peaks of talk that you get from the engines. Next year

:30:27.:30:31.

there are going to be dealing with a lot more to

:30:32.:30:42.

Hulkenberg tried to get into the top ten. Usually Sutil is quick in the

:30:43.:30:51.

wet. I guess he is going to put a new set of intermediates on. We have

:30:52.:30:57.

just seen Kovalainen, bit of work going on on his car. He has been in

:30:58.:31:05.

the pit lane for a few moments. What does Button do? It is a slight

:31:06.:31:14.

improvement in time. There is Heikki Kovalainen's car. And Grosjean. They

:31:15.:31:23.

are waiting to service Grosjean before sending him out. Timing is

:31:24.:31:30.

going to be everything. It is about being out there when the track is at

:31:31.:31:35.

its quickest. It will be quickest at the end, they think. There is a life

:31:36.:31:44.

pit stop taking place on Lewis Hamilton's car. It is very busy down

:31:45.:31:53.

here. We have the Toro Rossos coming in, everybody is going to go for a

:31:54.:31:57.

new set of intermediatess. They know the danger of sitting out in the

:31:58.:32:01.

pits. We have seen teams make mistakes on so many occasions. You

:32:02.:32:05.

have got to be out there when the track is at its best. A good first

:32:06.:32:10.

sector from Vettel but not the best of all. Temperatures here are better

:32:11.:32:21.

than for the first set. It is all to do with the preheating. What they

:32:22.:32:26.

are talking about on the radio is the temperature they have preheated

:32:27.:32:31.

the tyre to. They have changed the preheating and are hoping for more

:32:32.:32:36.

grip on the second run. They don't have the queueing up at the end of

:32:37.:32:40.

the pit lane, losing temperature. The benefit is that Vettel improves

:32:41.:32:41.

further. These tyres go on, straight out of

:32:42.:32:53.

the blankets, he will leave the pit lane and get straight into a hard

:32:54.:32:58.

lap. The breaks are hot because we are well enough into the collar

:32:59.:33:02.

firing sessions. In theory it gets easier for the drivers to manage the

:33:03.:33:08.

preparation. It was a mistake that McLaren and Mercedes made earlier in

:33:09.:33:13.

Malaysia. We have a fastest first sector from Felipe Massa. Flying in

:33:14.:33:19.

the Ferrari, his last outing for Ferrari in qualifying. Can he keep

:33:20.:33:27.

it going for the rest of the lap? Let's see whether he can maintain

:33:28.:33:31.

that pace. A lot of quick guys out there. Mark Webber improving his own

:33:32.:33:38.

time in the first sector. Paul di Resta going better, he has a chance

:33:39.:33:43.

of getting into the top ten. The middle sector from Massa is not so

:33:44.:33:49.

good. It doesn't look as if he will suddenly surprise us. He is only a

:33:50.:33:54.

tenth or so of what he needs for Ricciardo. Massa crossing the line

:33:55.:34:02.

in six, you would think it might be reasonably safe. Still a bit of a

:34:03.:34:10.

way to go. Three minutes to go. Hulkenberg is not there in terms of

:34:11.:34:15.

the lap time he needs. A bit of a wobble from the Force India, they

:34:16.:34:18.

might be struggling to get the heat in the tyres. They tend to be better

:34:19.:34:22.

over the long runs and dry conditions. The heat management of

:34:23.:34:27.

the car enables them to control that. The wet weather is not

:34:28.:34:31.

dampening Adrian Sutil's girlfriend's view. Hulkenberg

:34:32.:34:34.

scraped in. He goes second, look at that, a

:34:35.:34:48.

great lap from Fernando Alonso. Grosjean has just gone six fastest.

:34:49.:34:59.

He may even go fastest in the middle sector -- go fastest, he is fastest

:35:00.:35:04.

in the middle table. Yes, he tops the table. More changes coming up, I

:35:05.:35:12.

am sure. Alonso's lap shows the track conditions are pretty good.

:35:13.:35:17.

Kovalainen has just improved his lap time. Bottas is not there yet, Perez

:35:18.:35:28.

is footing. Jenson Button hasn't done enough yet -- Perez is 14th.

:35:29.:35:40.

Kendra Keanu get in the top ten? Fax --

:35:41.:35:44.

can Ricciardo get in the top ten? Kovalainen is on a quiet lap. Look

:35:45.:35:57.

at where he is on the circuit. He will get one final lap to get

:35:58.:36:02.

through. Look at the rain, visibly heavier. It could well be an locked

:36:03.:36:11.

in top ten. It might be too late for Kovalainen, he is 11th at the

:36:12.:36:16.

moment. His team-mate has gone fastest. It looks as though the rain

:36:17.:36:22.

is coming down more heavily. The last chance for Kovalainen. Di Resta

:36:23.:36:28.

is in his last chance, so is Bottas, Perez, Button and Sutil. It is

:36:29.:36:36.

impressive that Button has improved his first sector. He is coming up

:36:37.:36:45.

over the rise, locking the wheel, you can see the understeer. They

:36:46.:36:53.

tend to under rotates the wheel in dry conditions. I suspect it is

:36:54.:36:57.

something you have to drive with and manage in these conditions. This

:36:58.:37:02.

last part of the lap seems to be more slippery. Button qualified on

:37:03.:37:06.

the front row last year and went on to win the race. He is seven tenths

:37:07.:37:14.

down on where he needs to be. Everyone is going slower in this

:37:15.:37:17.

middle sector. I think it is all over. Webber is slower in the middle

:37:18.:37:26.

sector. It looks as though we might have two Toro Rossos in the top ten.

:37:27.:37:32.

Sergio Perez has hit the wall. That will bring out yellows, if not the

:37:33.:37:39.

red flag. The chequered flag is out so I guess they don't need the red

:37:40.:37:43.

flag. It looks as though our top ten is set. Perez is out, as is Jenson

:37:44.:37:52.

Button. Perez was quicker than Button before that but a sad end to

:37:53.:37:56.

his McLaren career, as Sergio Perez crashes in Q2. This is to turn four.

:37:57.:38:05.

He controls it there but as he goes through five, he gets out onto the

:38:06.:38:10.

kerbs and goes on a high-speed journey to the wall. Thankfully the

:38:11.:38:16.

impact was lower than the damage looks.

:38:17.:38:28.

RADIO: Are you OK? Yes, I am OK. Making sure of the most important

:38:29.:38:35.

aspect, that the driver is OK. It was getting worse and worse and he

:38:36.:38:42.

just got onto the kerb. Once you go onto the painted curbs you have got

:38:43.:38:45.

to lift out and he tried to stay with it, and that is the result. --

:38:46.:38:49.

curbs. Over the course of the season he has

:38:50.:38:59.

out-qualified him on ten occasions. He has actually come out on top. He

:39:00.:39:08.

wouldn't have wanted to end it like that.

:39:09.:39:14.

The other key loss was Heikki Kovalainen. He had been going well

:39:15.:39:22.

and we thought he might scrape in but I think the rain caught him out.

:39:23.:39:27.

Yes, you have got to be on the track at the right time. He was doing a

:39:28.:39:31.

slow lap at the time the rain came and it is about having that crystal

:39:32.:39:36.

ball. I think it sums up how difficult this McLaren has been to

:39:37.:39:41.

drive, that Jenson Button finds himself in 15th. Good efforts from

:39:42.:39:48.

Paul di Resta, Bottas is growing in confidence. Bottas shakes the hand

:39:49.:39:56.

of the Williams guys. Heikki Kovalainen is out. Sergio Perez

:39:57.:40:00.

crashing out in the end. Both McLarens not in the next part.

:40:01.:40:09.

It was fascinateling conditions and tricky conditions here as we can

:40:10.:40:16.

see. -- fascinating. We can't see them because of the rain, you can

:40:17.:40:20.

see the shots of the rain coming off there, the visibility is bad for the

:40:21.:40:24.

driver, and not the way that Perez would want to end that session,

:40:25.:40:29.

trying too hard. Perez, again, I want to compliment the driver. Perez

:40:30.:40:33.

is the only person who had that big mistake and hit the wall. But we are

:40:34.:40:38.

going to be on full wet. You are smack on there. Nevertheless, let us

:40:39.:40:43.

not be too surprised if some teams go on to the intermediates towards

:40:44.:40:46.

the end of the final session. Now they know they are in the top ten

:40:47.:40:52.

they will have a go. Perez lost it. Maybe the car is too low, you don't

:40:53.:40:55.

eknow where the floor touched the grouped with the water effect, this

:40:56.:41:01.

circuit is so undulating it has little rivers and they cause mayhem

:41:02.:41:06.

over years gone by. Let us look at it from another angle. It seems

:41:07.:41:10.

there were a few moments where the track improved slightly enough for

:41:11.:41:14.

Grosjean and the deluge caught everybody out. What happens is you

:41:15.:41:17.

get your mind set into a way that you want to go into this race, and

:41:18.:41:24.

you just lose, you know the focus changes, because the rain is coming

:41:25.:41:28.

down in ter rents. It is awesome what is going on here. -- forrence,

:41:29.:41:34.

we have seen rain here in Brazil but not as heavy as this. It is coming

:41:35.:41:39.

down like cats and dogs. So, so Perez. Thank goodness he is OK. Paul

:41:40.:41:43.

di Resta is now talking though to Leigh.

:41:44.:41:49.

We will let you stand under the umbrella. Such difficult condition,

:41:50.:41:52.

how do you feel after that? Was there any more you could be giving

:41:53.:41:57.

when the flag came out, the session was limited with Sergio Perez's

:41:58.:42:02.

crash. I think unfortunately, this first set of tires -- tyred didn't

:42:03.:42:06.

switch on, we got in early, got out but the conditions were

:42:07.:42:11.

deteriorating, but to be P 12, after only doing six laps all weekend, I

:42:12.:42:19.

messed FP 1, and competitive lap times, I am satisfied with that,

:42:20.:42:23.

going into a race that is looking like it should be dry, autumn though

:42:24.:42:26.

today should have been, who has done the best work on the simulator

:42:27.:42:30.

womaning here, nobody hassed in idea what it is going to be. How could

:42:31.:42:35.

this be? He looks like he is pleased to be off the track and not

:42:36.:42:39.

surprisingly so. What he said is important to remember about the

:42:40.:42:45.

simulator, most people now, if tomorrow is dry, it would be pot

:42:46.:42:50.

ruck or whatever they wound up with, in the simulator. -- luck. That is

:42:51.:42:55.

how they will run the car. They have to be careful about the wing

:42:56.:42:58.

settings and stuff like that to comply with the regulations but the

:42:59.:43:02.

car will be set up as they came here, on Thursday, for the set up of

:43:03.:43:06.

the car before the car is has ran, so it is all to play for. Max

:43:07.:43:09.

Chilton went out in Q1, and he caught up with Leigh.

:43:10.:43:14.

Max, it looks difficult conditions out there, how tough was it? It is

:43:15.:43:19.

very challenging. We got practise over this weekend

:43:20.:43:22.

luckily in the tricky condition, but when you have to go straight out and

:43:23.:43:26.

on your first lap you don't know where the limit is s and I just had

:43:27.:43:30.

a big moment coming out of turn 3, luckily got away with it. Lost too

:43:31.:43:34.

much speed on the straight. The next lap it was raining too much. It's a

:43:35.:43:38.

fine line, you have to get it right. Yeah, well, we can see Sergio

:43:39.:43:43.

Perez's car being removed from the track, in these, well, frankly

:43:44.:43:48.

appalling condition, and we have heard that Q 3 will be delayed by

:43:49.:43:52.

ten minute, or so, because of the weather, so, we wait to see if that

:43:53.:43:57.

will improve. As I am saying that it seems as though it has got brighter,

:43:58.:44:01.

so it changes from minute to minute here. It is incredible. David said,

:44:02.:44:07.

we have got altitude here and therefore it is very hard to clearly

:44:08.:44:12.

depict what is going to happen. The other thing about the delay, I

:44:13.:44:17.

wouldn't be surprised, there is no way the medical helicopter could fly

:44:18.:44:20.

in conditions like this, so there are a number of reason, it is not

:44:21.:44:25.

down to poor old Perez, we must not blame him for this not happening.

:44:26.:44:28.

There are a number of issue, what we see on the screen here, is I can't

:44:29.:44:32.

imagine why, the people at home think it is OK. It is very difficult

:44:33.:44:38.

to see, because in reality, if you like the cloud has engulfed us. I

:44:39.:44:42.

never really shows, that is is a good shot you can see, everything

:44:43.:44:46.

misted up. It is absolutely bucketing down, it is constant and

:44:47.:44:50.

it is that, you know, it is that really thick heavy wet rain that is

:44:51.:44:54.

causing a problem. Do you want to put the umbrella over me a bit.

:44:55.:44:59.

Thanks Eddie! I didn't want to get too close for all sorts of reasons!

:45:00.:45:06.

Who is going to be on pole position? You know, you are the man with the

:45:07.:45:12.

old crystal ball. Don't schmooze me now. I am not, especially after what

:45:13.:45:17.

you just said about me! Jean-Eric Vergne let us tack about him. He is

:45:18.:45:22.

in the top ten shoot out when it start, he will be thrilled about

:45:23.:45:27.

that, because we have heard, that Jean-Eric Vergne is great guy, a wet

:45:28.:45:31.

weather master, this could be fantastic for him, because he has

:45:32.:45:36.

had so much bad luck, to see him go from the top ten. For anyone who is

:45:37.:45:41.

not wear of the ability of Jean-Eric Vergne, then, this could be the

:45:42.:45:45.

weekend as you rightly say, this guy is hugely talented and I would say

:45:46.:45:49.

it was a real cliffhanger, for Red Bull to decide which of their

:45:50.:45:52.

drivers they were going to take into the main team, because obviously,

:45:53.:45:57.

Ricciardo has now got the reputation, but Jean-Eric Vergne is

:45:58.:46:00.

exactly the same mould, the same speed, and the same quality, and he

:46:01.:46:06.

is a top driver. I would be happy to have him in any team of mine. That

:46:07.:46:12.

last session was all about timing and unfortunately for Kovalainen it

:46:13.:46:16.

didn't work out. Looking at satellite map, which says it is

:46:17.:46:19.

rain, I could have told you that! But there you go. It is about

:46:20.:46:23.

ticking your head out and looking at what the weather is doing. It

:46:24.:46:27.

doesn't look to change very much at the moment. We will keep you

:46:28.:46:31.

informed. The The great thing about this we probably see the top ten all

:46:32.:46:38.

higgledy-piggledy. When it hopefully becomes a dry race tomorrow it will

:46:39.:46:42.

be exciting. The last few races haven't been filled with the

:46:43.:46:45.

excitement we have been used to in years gone by, that is because of

:46:46.:46:49.

the dominance of Vettel. Well done for him to make sure he is top of

:46:50.:46:53.

the draw. It would be nice to see if he is beaten for pole. I believe

:46:54.:46:57.

there is a chance for Grosjean, there is a chance, we are saying

:46:58.:47:01.

hello to Paul again, there is a chance for Hamilton. Let us see what

:47:02.:47:06.

does happen, but my guess is it will not be Vettel. You have been saying

:47:07.:47:10.

all day today you think is going to be Hamilton. Rosberg was yesterday

:47:11.:47:16.

fastest in both sessions, we are looking at pictures of Hulkenberg

:47:17.:47:20.

there, another guy that can be terrific in the wet, but it must be

:47:21.:47:26.

nerve-wracking, he has wander off. I wonder if, how difficult, tell you

:47:27.:47:30.

what, let us go up to the commentary box where David is sitting. He has

:47:31.:47:34.

driven here in the wet and he beat Michael Schumacher one year here who

:47:35.:47:38.

was a weather master himself. In fact, we won't do that, because

:47:39.:47:44.

David just popped out. He has gone for a comfort break. He has

:47:45.:47:48.

returned. He is running back as we speak. David, are you donning

:47:49.:47:53.

hopefully he is donning his mic and headphones. I just wondering from ra

:47:54.:47:58.

driver's persecretive. Sorry I caught you out there. We are happy

:47:59.:48:05.

we caught you out. Could you put some, you know, meat

:48:06.:48:09.

on the bones for us, because we are are only used the driving in normal

:48:10.:48:14.

cars and that is tricky enough. What makes this track particularly

:48:15.:48:17.

difficult is the fact you have the elevation change so naturally water

:48:18.:48:20.

will find its way down the hill, it doesn't consider whether that gives

:48:21.:48:23.

standing water for the drivers or not. When you go through the Senna

:48:24.:48:28.

curve at the first three corners, you have all this different water

:48:29.:48:31.

patches, so you are not only trying to find your line, you are trying to

:48:32.:48:37.

judge how much water is there. Looking at Daniel Ricciardo, of

:48:38.:48:40.

course, driver for Toro Rosso at the moment, but a driver who will be

:48:41.:48:43.

competing with Red Bull next year. Joining us from the pit wall, team

:48:44.:48:49.

prince Pam Christian Horner, you have both top name drivers into the

:48:50.:48:53.

top ten but both Toro Rosso drivers are there. It is working out well

:48:54.:48:58.

for you at the moment. Yes, both guys have done well to get into the

:48:59.:49:01.

top ten, seeing as they were on the border of being knocked out in Q1,

:49:02.:49:06.

so, to have four Red Bull cars is obviously very good. Any worrying

:49:07.:49:10.

moments for yourselves? Mark Webber needed to draw a lap out earlier on

:49:11.:49:14.

in Q1, but otherwise they seem to have been pretty comfortable. He got

:49:15.:49:21.

a bit messed up with foreign doe and compromised his first lap, which was

:49:22.:49:26.

an important lap, but he managed to get a lap in and navigate his way

:49:27.:49:30.

into Q2. The problem now is, you need more of a boat than a car with

:49:31.:49:33.

the conditions the way they are. Yes, I mean it has got worse, we

:49:34.:49:38.

have images on the screens as you have, of how much water is standing

:49:39.:49:42.

on the track. Extreme wets will be needed, but at the moment, are we

:49:43.:49:46.

beyond being able to go out on the extreme wets do you think? I think

:49:47.:49:52.

so, the problem as DC know, the rivers that form across the circuit,

:49:53.:49:57.

and once the car aquaplanes, you are just a passenger, and because of the

:49:58.:50:02.

gradients in the track here, these rivers form, and particularly in the

:50:03.:50:06.

last sector, and in the middle sector, so it is safety above

:50:07.:50:10.

everything in these conditions. Given the changeable conditions we

:50:11.:50:14.

are seeing here, have you had to compromise the set up beyond normal

:50:15.:50:20.

putting the wets on and allowing the car to raise its height naturally

:50:21.:50:23.

because of the depth and the width of the tyre, is there any other

:50:24.:50:28.

compromises you have done? Not too much to be honest. I mean you are

:50:29.:50:32.

trying to come up with a car that has a broad window of balance across

:50:33.:50:37.

the three types of tyre. If it gets to be on slicks it is the first time

:50:38.:50:42.

we have will have run slicks all weekend. That will be a voyage into

:50:43.:50:46.

the unknown. You are stabbing in the dark and trying to achieve the best

:50:47.:50:49.

ambulance you can in these conditions. What do you rely on? Do

:50:50.:50:53.

you let the engineer and driver put their ing finger in the air and use

:50:54.:50:57.

their experience or are you draw morgue on the simulation and the

:50:58.:51:01.

operational rapes the teams have back at base? We have the operations

:51:02.:51:06.

at base, we have Adrian on the line back in Milton Keynes, and you know,

:51:07.:51:11.

so we are fully supported to the link back to the factory, the data

:51:12.:51:14.

and information we have from the race last year, where it was similar

:51:15.:51:18.

conditions, it is a very good reference for us to be able to use.

:51:19.:51:23.

Thank you for joining us, we will see how the final part goes when it

:51:24.:51:31.

gets going. Thanks the a lot. Good shots of Sergio Perez looking fine,

:51:32.:51:34.

that is the scene here in Interlagos, Brazil for qualifying,

:51:35.:51:39.

the rain is pouring drown, we have a slight delay. Let us hear from

:51:40.:51:44.

Jenson Button, who has been talking to Leigh. This is nice, at least we

:51:45.:51:49.

are under umbrella, how tricky was it on the track today? Q1 wasn't. It

:51:50.:51:55.

felt pretty good. Q2 there was more water on the circuit. We, we haven't

:51:56.:52:01.

been out in the wet, we have been trying to save tyres, and we have

:52:02.:52:07.

proven that was the wrong call. But rounds off the year nicely and one

:52:08.:52:11.

more day of pain, and then we can start working on hopefully a good

:52:12.:52:15.

car next year. The car you were out there in today, you can make changes

:52:16.:52:19.

for tomorrow because you are not in the top ten, what was it set up for

:52:20.:52:23.

and what is tomorrow's forecast looking like? We have, we have got

:52:24.:52:31.

pretty low down Fox we fell it was working yesterday but we didn't run

:52:32.:52:35.

when it was very wet. We are struggling to get the tyre pressure,

:52:36.:52:39.

however high we go with the temperature of the tyre, so it is

:52:40.:52:43.

something, it is like a switch, today, as I said in Q1 the car was

:52:44.:52:49.

working well and relatively quick. We are not in Q2 when it is wet. It

:52:50.:52:55.

came in the last corner, turn 14 and I was three tenths up and I got to

:52:56.:53:02.

that 10.14. There was a river running across circuit and I lifted

:53:03.:53:07.

it and the three tenths was gone. Tomorrow is supposed to be a bit

:53:08.:53:11.

drier. You lovb obviously love your job, are you at the stage it is one

:53:12.:53:18.

more sleep? Yes. Thanks Jenson. Just two minutes to go now, until Q 3. It

:53:19.:53:23.

sounds as toe the depth of the condition, the treacherous

:53:24.:53:28.

conditions have caught McLaren out. They wanted some rain and were

:53:29.:53:34.

hoping to make it to Q3. It is indicative of their season. Jenson

:53:35.:53:38.

didn't look a happy camper there, for a guy not that many years ago

:53:39.:53:43.

was celebrating his World Championship here. And granddaughter

:53:44.:53:47.

great memory, last year, success, He won. Absolutely. So the reality is

:53:48.:53:53.

that McLaren, they want the see the back of this year, unless a miracle

:53:54.:53:57.

happens tomorrow, they need to finish on the podium to have any joy

:53:58.:54:01.

going home. A further ten minute delay I am hearing, to the next

:54:02.:54:08.

session. So we will have a little chat about Heikki, that is due to

:54:09.:54:12.

the volume of water standing on the track, that is far too dangerous for

:54:13.:54:16.

the cars to go out. So let us hear from Heikki.

:54:17.:54:20.

It looked like there was work going on on your car in Q2? Not really.

:54:21.:54:28.

Changing tyres. You were holding position Yes holding in the pit lane

:54:29.:54:31.

and trying to find the right time. No problems with the car, the car is

:54:32.:54:37.

performing as well as Jed -- yesterday. How do you think it will

:54:38.:54:41.

translate to tomorrow, are we expecting a dry race? Can you ever

:54:42.:54:45.

tell here? We can't tell, we don't have a clear weather forecast, today

:54:46.:54:49.

was supposed to be better and it wasn't really much better, so, to be

:54:50.:54:54.

honest I have no problem with the condition, I enjoy driving in the

:54:55.:54:58.

rain. It is not an excuse, it is the same for everybody. In qualifying

:54:59.:55:02.

you have to be there at the right time to nail the lap. We didn't do

:55:03.:55:08.

it well enough today. In the race, you know, the conditions you know,

:55:09.:55:13.

anything can happen in these condition, so I have to keep pushing

:55:14.:55:20.

and I still do a good race, but it would be easier further up the grid

:55:21.:55:24.

but there you go. So Heikki speaking frankly, you saw ten minutes to go

:55:25.:55:28.

until the next session starts. It is, it is frustrating I think, as a

:55:29.:55:32.

motor sport fan to think Heikki isn't going to get a drive next year

:55:33.:55:36.

when he is doing so well. Shown what he can do. It is a sign of the times

:55:37.:55:46.

of course but very frustrating. Particularly because we are talking

:55:47.:55:51.

about a Grand Prix winner. It was sad to see he was not driving in a

:55:52.:55:56.

permanent seat this year. It was only halfway through the season that

:55:57.:55:59.

cater decided they should bring him along for his experience. --

:56:00.:56:06.

Caterham decided. As a result of that he has the drive that he had at

:56:07.:56:11.

Lotus. I think he will do an amazing job in the race tomorrow. We have

:56:12.:56:14.

just been joined by the man from last week, Valtteri Bottas. You

:56:15.:56:25.

stand out in the rain, Eddie. Took us through the conditions. -- talk

:56:26.:56:33.

us through. It was quite tricky. In the beginning it was about getting a

:56:34.:56:38.

very good lap in the first lap and after that, every lap was slower and

:56:39.:56:44.

slower. Q2 was getting more wet. We have seen that the more wet it is,

:56:45.:56:48.

we have been struggling more and more. We were hoping for more dry

:56:49.:56:54.

conditions. We will think positively for next year, your new team-mate,

:56:55.:56:58.

Massa and yourself, looking forward to that? Definitely, looking forward

:56:59.:57:05.

to working with Felipe, he has so much experience and it is good that

:57:06.:57:09.

it is from a team like Ferrari. It is good for us, really looking

:57:10.:57:13.

forward to it. Do you know him quite well? I met him once when we did the

:57:14.:57:21.

announcement at the factory. He seems like a nice guy and there

:57:22.:57:26.

should be no problems. How relieved... You don't have to be

:57:27.:57:32.

Einstein to work out the maths, there are more drivers than seats.

:57:33.:57:37.

How relieved are you that you got the seat that you wanted? Of course,

:57:38.:57:45.

it is a big relief. It was always in my head that I would continue with

:57:46.:57:50.

Williams, I didn't doubt it. But it is Formula 1, nothing is sure unless

:57:51.:57:55.

it is confirmed. It is very nice to know what is going to be in the

:57:56.:58:02.

future so of course, it is a relief. Thank you very much, I am sure you

:58:03.:58:06.

want to have a cup of tea and we would love you to bring a couple

:58:07.:58:10.

out! Let's go to the commentary box and get their thoughts.

:58:11.:58:16.

Comes we have some shots from the helicopter above the circuit and it

:58:17.:58:20.

is looking pretty awful -- COMMENTATOR: We have some shots from

:58:21.:58:27.

the helicopter above the circuit. We are expecting another report at

:58:28.:58:32.

five minutes past the hour. We should hear something more in a

:58:33.:58:40.

couple of minutes. That chap's hair was straight before he came to the

:58:41.:58:44.

circuit! We should remind ourselves where we are in the world, the only

:58:45.:58:48.

thing that is missing is the actual rainforest, it has been cleared to

:58:49.:58:52.

create this vast, sprawling city that is Sao Paulo. The conditions

:58:53.:58:57.

are what you would expect in the rainforest. We have seen it many

:58:58.:59:01.

times. It has been the dry season of racing since 1987, apparently. It is

:59:02.:59:07.

making up for it now. It is an amazing circuit, the city surrounds

:59:08.:59:11.

it. On every side there are buildings, houses, businesses. I am

:59:12.:59:16.

sure it was not like this when it was first built. It was built around

:59:17.:59:21.

the time of the Second World War and I am sure Sao Paulo wasn't as

:59:22.:59:26.

sprawling as it is now. 11.5 million people in the centre of city, 20

:59:27.:59:31.

million in the outlying regions and its surrounds the track.

:59:32.:59:35.

million in the outlying regions and its surrounds It does and apparently

:59:36.:59:37.

it was built on land considered not suitable for housing. Quite why it

:59:38.:59:42.

you would think it was suitable for racing cars... There is the

:59:43.:59:47.

opportunity for locals to make some extra money with providing parking

:59:48.:59:52.

when we come in here. There has been hugely relevant in Brazil since I

:59:53.:59:56.

first came into racing in Formula 1. It will continue as they head

:59:57.:00:01.

towards the World Cup next year and the Summer Olympics couple of years

:00:02.:00:05.

later. A huge growth in sport and the economy. It is just that the

:00:06.:00:09.

weather is not something they can control. We have seen many wet

:00:10.:00:15.

Brazilian Grand Prix and changeable conditions, it does usually provide

:00:16.:00:21.

an exciting event. We just want to see some cars on track. It is purely

:00:22.:00:26.

down to the amount of water on track, the reason we are not seeing

:00:27.:00:30.

anything out. We just saw the third driver at Lotus, who sadly missed

:00:31.:00:33.

out on the opportunity to replace Kimi Raikkonen. He has clearly been

:00:34.:00:40.

disappointed about that committee has said as much, almost reluctant

:00:41.:00:45.

to have his face on camera. Which begs the question, why stand in

:00:46.:00:49.

front of the garage where the cameras will firmly! You can't

:00:50.:00:55.

really film -- will film you, you can't re-that! -- you can't really

:00:56.:01:00.

hide from that. People are running up and down the

:01:01.:01:11.

paddock, trying to find dry positions to wait for Q3, which

:01:12.:01:14.

should hopefully be in about five minutes or so. The last action we

:01:15.:01:20.

had from Q2 was the Sergio Perez crash as he slid and spun into the

:01:21.:01:27.

wall and we can hear from him. First of all, it looks like a big hit, are

:01:28.:01:33.

you OK? I am hearing the same from everyone, I think it looked bigger

:01:34.:01:40.

than it was. I am OK. Thankfully it was not very hard. I saw the front

:01:41.:01:46.

wing a bit on the rear suspension. We were planning something today,

:01:47.:01:53.

hopefully we could make it to say goodbye to my people. That is most

:01:54.:01:57.

important for me at the moment. How tricky are the conditions, it looked

:01:58.:02:03.

like you got onto the white line? I was trying my best to find a lap

:02:04.:02:08.

time, the car was not performing. I knew it was my last lap, I gave it

:02:09.:02:13.

my all, the conditions were at their worst. I tried to risk everything

:02:14.:02:19.

and it ended badly. In actual fact you have outqualified Jenson Button

:02:20.:02:23.

ten times to his nine this season. It has been a good qualifying season

:02:24.:02:36.

for use -- you, for McLaren, does it answer anything about why you are

:02:37.:02:41.

leaving the team? I think only time will tell if the decision was the

:02:42.:02:45.

right one. I have to look forward to the future. I hope next year I am

:02:46.:02:49.

sitting here doing an interview and telling you it was a great thing, to

:02:50.:02:59.

leave McLaren. Let's look at his last qualifying session with

:03:00.:03:03.

McLaren. This happened just about 20 minutes ago. We talked about keeping

:03:04.:03:10.

away from the white lines, they are so treacherous. Even on the paddock

:03:11.:03:15.

you do not go on them in case you fall over, what must it be like at

:03:16.:03:22.

that speed? Once he is on the kerb and the white line, it is a miracle

:03:23.:03:27.

that it was as little impact as it was. It looks like we are going to

:03:28.:03:38.

have another delay to Q3. Tilting about Perez, you are not with us

:03:39.:03:44.

when the news was announced he would be leaving McLaren committee was

:03:45.:03:46.

very shocked, as I think a few people were. -- he was very shocked.

:03:47.:03:58.

You have brought your own umbrella. I have brought one of yours! Pop,

:03:59.:04:07.

what is happening next year? There has been an Eddie Jordan theory that

:04:08.:04:12.

there is going to be a change in line-up and we might not be seeing

:04:13.:04:19.

Paul di Resta. -- Bob. We have two excellent drivers and there has to

:04:20.:04:22.

be compelling reasons why we would change them and at this point, those

:04:23.:04:29.

reasons are not there. Adrian Sutil putters manager said there are two

:04:30.:04:35.

options, you guys and Sauber. In an ideal world, you would remain the

:04:36.:04:42.

same? The decision is not one we need to take yet. At the end of the

:04:43.:04:47.

day we will finish this weekend, there are some issues with Lotus. I

:04:48.:04:53.

think they are the key in the driver market and once that decision is

:04:54.:04:56.

made, he will give direction on where we want to go. We have two

:04:57.:05:01.

good drivers and there have to be good reasons to change them. What

:05:02.:05:12.

did you mean by Lotus and change? I think Lotus is the key in terms of

:05:13.:05:17.

getting a position for that driver. Once it is done it tumbles back down

:05:18.:05:23.

and we are probably next in line. There is obviously a massive

:05:24.:05:26.

financial problem at Lotus and they are waiting for money to come in, it

:05:27.:05:30.

is a question of whether this money is going to come in or not in terms

:05:31.:05:34.

of whether they are looking at Maldonado or Hulkenberg, is that not

:05:35.:05:40.

the situation? It is up to them to resolve, we can't do anything about

:05:41.:05:44.

it, we are passengers. We can't hide behind the cloak, I have repeatedly

:05:45.:05:50.

said that Hulkenberg will be in your team. Do you not want to confirm

:05:51.:05:57.

that? I can't hide behind anything because you told me. You have said

:05:58.:06:03.

something on previous occasions, Hulkenberg would be welcome back in

:06:04.:06:07.

the team. You have this trio of drivers. It is quite convert hated.

:06:08.:06:17.

-- quite convert hated. -- quite complicated. It is that it will

:06:18.:06:27.

resolve itself. -- but it will resolve. Thank you for coming with

:06:28.:06:35.

your umbrella. We appreciate it and we work to find out. Of course, you

:06:36.:06:39.

will let us know first what is happening with Force India. Lots of

:06:40.:06:48.

mechanics are waving and it looks like things are happening. Every

:06:49.:06:54.

time you say that, it is a downpour and we are into another five-minute

:06:55.:07:00.

delay. We were having a conversation about Perez, what are your thoughts.

:07:01.:07:15.

Will he end up getting a drive? I would be very sad to lose him out of

:07:16.:07:21.

Formula 1. I think what he did in Sabah was amazing. I know we have

:07:22.:07:29.

slight difference of opinion about the job did at McLaren -- what he

:07:30.:07:31.

did in Sabah. Bob has played a very good poker

:07:32.:07:52.

hand. Perez is an exciting driver to watch. It is what you want in

:07:53.:08:01.

Formula 1. Remember we loved watching curb by Ashley and not many

:08:02.:08:05.

people are talking about him. -- we love watching Kobayashi. The top end

:08:06.:08:15.

of professional sport everywhere in the world, it is really hard.

:08:16.:08:28.

Do you think it will have any clever task?

:08:29.:08:35.

You enlarge the statement and you say, would Martin Whitmarsh come to

:08:36.:08:43.

a fellow Mercedes team and bring it to Force India? You say, why would

:08:44.:08:48.

he do that when already, Martin Whitmarsh knows that Paul di Resta

:08:49.:08:51.

could be losing a seat as a result of that. He was already a solid and

:08:52.:08:56.

great member of the Mercedes team. There are a lot of conflicts, I

:08:57.:09:02.

don't want to get run on it. -- drawn on it. What else did Paul di

:09:03.:09:09.

Resta have to do to secure that seat? It is a problem with British

:09:10.:09:14.

drivers. Traditionally we have never gone about... Come and join us here.

:09:15.:09:24.

Thanks for joining us, it is not quite the weather we had hoped for.

:09:25.:09:29.

Not really but at the moment you cannot go, there was a lot of water

:09:30.:09:35.

on the track. Lewis Hamilton was looking quite sharp out there today,

:09:36.:09:38.

weather conditions will have to improve and are you hopeful of

:09:39.:09:46.

locking out the front row perhaps? Obviously it would be great but

:09:47.:09:48.

Sebastian Vettel was very strong so I guess it is going to be the usual

:09:49.:09:55.

suspects. What are you going to do with regards to the tyres?

:09:56.:10:06.

If the rain stops, it could go quickly. That is the danger at the

:10:07.:10:19.

moment. Or stay on the full wets. There is too much standing water, my

:10:20.:10:22.

guess is you will be on the full wets. We made a forecast earlier, we

:10:23.:10:27.

said Lewis Hamilton will be on pole position, can you make sure that

:10:28.:10:32.

happens? All of us would like that to happen. I am thinking about the

:10:33.:10:39.

lucky punch. How that would work. We will talk about that later on.

:10:40.:10:42.

Moving forward, an moving sort of, well having a look at what you have

:10:43.:10:45.

done this year as a team, I have been told there is a further ten

:10:46.:10:51.

minute delay, so stay with us, You could here for a lifetime. You

:10:52.:10:58.

should have a coffee! In terms of getting your ducks in a row, we have

:10:59.:11:03.

seen changes in personnel, rumours about whether Ross is going to stay

:11:04.:11:07.

or go, how you feeling about how things have shaped up for next

:11:08.:11:13.

season? Obviously, this is probably the biggest, the rule or regulation

:11:14.:11:19.

change in the last years, and it is not only a new energy, a new

:11:20.:11:23.

Powertrain but a new set of regulation, and so the change is

:11:24.:11:27.

Mags Si. In terms of the organisation, we started to get a

:11:28.:11:33.

bunch 06 good guys and they start well, they work well with the team,

:11:34.:11:44.

so we should be in good shape. We spoke earlier, dominance of interest

:11:45.:11:49.

yen, he is brilliantly talented. The change of tyres have helped him and

:11:50.:11:55.

helped Red Bull, why do you think was, and surely you had more control

:11:56.:12:01.

to give everyone a fair chance. It is guessing but they were very

:12:02.:12:05.

dominant last year, with those tyre, and they had a lot of experience on

:12:06.:12:10.

the tyres and when they came back, they simply kept the momentum and

:12:11.:12:14.

after the summer they were the one, the only ones doing massive steps

:12:15.:12:19.

forward. You could see a bunch op of teams were all keeping close

:12:20.:12:23.

together, but Red Bull was between half a second and up from them. This

:12:24.:12:27.

is just the sum of being sustainable, over the last years and

:12:28.:12:31.

understanding the tyres. There you go. That is answered in

:12:32.:12:35.

one go. It is frustrating for the people at home. They want exciting

:12:36.:12:41.

racing and we have seen such exciting racing, and interest yen's

:12:42.:12:45.

dominance, it is akin to the likes of Michael Schumacher's years and we

:12:46.:12:48.

don't want to see too much of that so we hope that you have all your

:12:49.:12:53.

ducks in a row and make sure you come back and win lots of races next

:12:54.:12:58.

year. Now the pressure is on! Thank you for your time. Good luck in this

:12:59.:13:04.

next session. Looking at pictures of Felipe Massa, waiting to go into Q3.

:13:05.:13:10.

And we are going to be running out of time on BBC One and switchling

:13:11.:13:13.

over to BBC Two shortly. -- switching. Stay with us, for the

:13:14.:13:19.

next few seconds, and weather conditions, it is really remaining

:13:20.:13:23.

the same. This is pot luck, as I said we look up, we see some

:13:24.:13:27.

clearing, and we think, wow, there is a window of opportunity, and

:13:28.:13:31.

suddenly, as soon as you look away, another cloud is over.

:13:32.:13:37.

Well, we are going to go to BBC Two, in just a few seconds, so you will

:13:38.:13:42.

have to switch over, so if you want to switch over now you will be able

:13:43.:13:47.

to rejoin us in the rain and see if we ever get this session away.

:13:48.:13:50.
