coverage of the British Grand Prix. If you have been watching the

:01:08.:01:14.

repeats, that is the third time you have seen these titles this morning.

:01:14.:01:17.

Congratulations for sticking with it. This is the last practice

:01:17.:01:22.

session. One more hour for the teams to get prepared. Effectively, the

:01:22.:01:25.

first session yesterday was a waste of time because it was wet and the

:01:26.:01:30.

forecast is to be dry or weekend. A lot of work in the second session. A

:01:30.:01:34.

lot of the teams did well. But it was a struggle for fair roaring.

:01:34.:01:40.

Felipe Massa crashed. We can go down to the pit lane. What is the latest

:01:40.:01:45.

on the story, Tom? Ther RA have had a busy evening.

:01:45.:01:54.

They have completed Masser 's car. It has just arrived in the pits

:01:54.:01:58.

garrotte. This is going to be his first proper dry lap of the weekend.

:01:58.:02:05.

An important session coming up. Button and Hamilton yesterday were

:02:05.:02:13.

not happy of -- happy. Hamilton were struggling with hay fever. He was

:02:14.:02:17.

struggling with the car. He said he felt the least comfortable he has

:02:17.:02:22.

ever felt in the car. Not good ahead of this Grand Prix. The fans to our

:02:22.:02:29.

left are packing the stands. They have all got their flags at. Jenson

:02:29.:02:35.

Button went to wave to them. But he, too, was not happy. The car is not

:02:36.:02:38.

competitive this weekend. It is one second down from where they want to

:02:38.:02:44.

be. Painful times for our two leading Brits.

:02:44.:02:50.

Just a quick one on conditions? No sign of the sun at the moment. It

:02:50.:02:55.

is pretty chilly. Here I am standing to Jenny in her shirtsleeves. At the

:02:55.:03:03.

wind is much stronger than yesterday. -- but the wind. It will

:03:03.:03:06.

be tricky for the drivers because they are protected on the approach

:03:06.:03:13.

to cops. Then they suddenly come out of a grandstand into the open and

:03:13.:03:17.

the wind hits them. You can see a few loose rear ends through there.

:03:17.:03:24.

Let's pop up to the commentary box. The guys there are talking about

:03:24.:03:30.

Jenson and Lewis not feeling well. But Paul di Resta has been a star

:03:30.:03:39.

this weekend. He has. All of the team will be over here to support.

:03:39.:03:45.

It is a big race. When you can do that, you get the team behind you. I

:03:45.:03:49.

think he is up for the fight. He did not get the qualification in the

:03:49.:03:57.

last two races that he would like. And the Toro Rosso 's yesterday were

:03:57.:04:03.

doing well. The news that Mark Webber is leaving

:04:03.:04:11.

Red Bull and a plum seat has become available, you can bet they will be

:04:11.:04:14.

putting everything on the line because of that is akin to

:04:14.:04:20.

outqualified each other and get the cars in the top ten.

:04:20.:04:30.
:04:30.:04:30.

McLaren were saying the track is not as bumpy as previously.

:04:30.:04:38.

They have tried to get rid of the bumps into the corners. We're just

:04:38.:04:41.

getting a bit of information from our teens. It makes a big

:04:41.:04:48.

difference. You can generate more downforce. That has been one of the

:04:48.:04:51.

car 's problems. The bumpy ride has not been good over the last few

:04:52.:04:57.

races. It is all about to kick off. I will

:04:57.:05:01.

hand over to you guys. This is the final practice session before

:05:01.:05:11.
:05:11.:05:13.

yesterday morning when it was so quiet. Nico Hulkenberg its first out

:05:13.:05:23.
:05:23.:05:38.

scene to put a car back together and practice area.

:05:38.:05:45.

The pit lane and exit is very small. There's no real reason for it. I

:05:45.:05:52.

don't understand why it's been so limited in size. It is tricky. You

:05:52.:05:59.

can go around the side of the car if you want to. It is a bit tricky.

:05:59.:06:09.
:06:09.:06:18.

way goes grew John. A reminder -- Sebastian Vettel was third fastest

:06:18.:06:23.

yesterday. Paul di Resta was top Brit ahead of Lewis Hamilton, who

:06:23.:06:33.

was fifth. The two Toro Rosso guys were sixth and seventh. Adrian Sutil

:06:33.:06:42.

was eighth. Jenson Button was disgruntled down in 11th. McLaren

:06:42.:06:52.
:06:52.:06:53.

were not as fast as they would like. Raikkonen was 13th. Further down,

:06:53.:07:01.

Gutierrez, among others. Max Chilton and Felipe Massa did not set a

:07:01.:07:07.

representative time. What they were doing there is

:07:07.:07:10.

putting the scales under the wheels. The weight distribution in these

:07:10.:07:18.

cars is important. You can move it a bit. The 1% makes a difference. You

:07:18.:07:27.

want to make sure you are as close to it as possible. The tyres are

:07:27.:07:32.

cold. They will be to the running pressures on the track. They will

:07:32.:07:40.

check the weight distribution. Then they took off the tyres and put on

:07:40.:07:45.

the heated ones in the blankets. The two tyres we are using, the

:07:46.:07:53.

Orange sidewall tire is a hard Pirelli tyre. Then we have got the

:07:53.:07:59.

medium as well, the Whitewater medium tyre. As you can see, it is a

:07:59.:08:09.
:08:09.:08:12.

hard tire. No times have been set yet. We are on board with Raikkonen.

:08:12.:08:15.

Let's see how it is handling as he goes through the sequences of fast

:08:15.:08:25.

corners. This is a famous section. It is all about change of direction

:08:25.:08:30.

here. The wind is blowing up the back of

:08:30.:08:35.

the car. That is the thing that upsets the car. You can lose rear

:08:35.:08:45.

downforce. Through that Becketts complex will be tricky for the guys.

:08:45.:08:49.

It just means opening the line a little bit. Some of the corners you

:08:49.:08:54.

want to take earlier, some later. You were looking at the bodywork on

:08:54.:08:58.

the two Lotus cars yesterday. They were experimenting with what they

:08:59.:09:04.

call the device. It is a secondary system to reduce drag. What are they

:09:04.:09:10.

running today? It is still on there today. I'm not sure they can use it

:09:10.:09:16.

today. That is what takes the airflow up to the rear wing. It

:09:16.:09:25.

stores the rear wing. -- stalls. I'm not sure they will raise it here.

:09:25.:09:31.

But they had it on the car. If you run something on Saturday

:09:31.:09:38.

morning, you tend to run it in qualifying. But they don't have to.

:09:38.:09:46.

The car goes into parc ferme. Then you are not allowed to change the

:09:46.:09:56.
:09:56.:10:06.

Big vibration already. Obviously he has just gone out, Lewis Hamilton.

:10:06.:10:15.

So that is a concern. That is slightly unusual. There for drivers

:10:15.:10:22.

out there on a medium tyre. Everybody out there apart from them

:10:23.:10:32.
:10:33.:10:42.

quite as quick as we saw yesterday afternoon yet. What are you seeing

:10:42.:10:47.

at Red Bull? It is interesting to see how much

:10:47.:10:53.

work the teams are still having to do. Gary was observing how Red Bull

:10:53.:10:59.

were playing around with the exhaust. They were trying to see how

:10:59.:11:09.
:11:09.:11:09.

it would be affected. Looking at the pictures, they have heard all sorts

:11:09.:11:14.

of cameras taking pictures of this. There is still so much work to do

:11:14.:11:20.

with, what, only another 50 minutes until qualifying.

:11:20.:11:26.

Red Bull, we always know how hard they work. People can sometimes

:11:26.:11:31.

think they did -- design the fastest cars and that is that. But they are

:11:31.:11:38.

always trying to improve. These cars will have been worked on

:11:38.:11:46.

last night. They are trying to make sense of some questions.

:11:46.:11:52.

Joining us now from the Ferrari pit wall is the principal. Lovely to

:11:52.:12:01.

have you with us. Good morning to all of you. A bit of blue sky for

:12:01.:12:09.

you today. Not enough! But we can improve.

:12:09.:12:12.

Felipe Massa had the accident yesterday. Tell us the extent of

:12:13.:12:16.

damage done to the car and how late they were like -- working last night

:12:16.:12:25.

to get it ready. The suspension was not too bad in

:12:25.:12:29.

terms of damages. But it was unfortunate because they could not

:12:29.:12:37.

finish. We need to prepare for today. It is not easy but the

:12:38.:12:46.

conditions will be different. I am here with Gary Anderson. He is

:12:46.:12:50.

always impressed by the way you always run these back-to-back tests

:12:50.:12:55.

on the Friday with both Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso. Similarly that

:12:55.:13:03.

has cost you in terms of your preparation? -- presumably.

:13:04.:13:10.

It will not be so relevant, unfortunately.

:13:10.:13:14.

The front wing you were running yesterday with Fernando, are you

:13:14.:13:19.

going to be running that this weekend? I think that we need to

:13:19.:13:25.

have some more management of that. Are you going to do the mileage this

:13:25.:13:31.

morning? I think we need to concentrate on this performance.

:13:31.:13:37.

Finally, this has been a great track over the years. You're one of the

:13:37.:13:41.

few teams based in the UK, but you seem to have an amazing relationship

:13:41.:13:48.

with Silverstone. What are your chances this weekend? The atmosphere

:13:48.:13:57.

is always great. I have been told that so many people love us in this

:13:57.:14:03.

country. It is amazing. We have had good experiences in the past. We

:14:03.:14:11.

have quick cars, teams qualifying. We will try to do our best.

:14:11.:14:19.

Thank you very much. We hope the day goes well. Ferrari, 16 wins in the

:14:19.:14:23.

British Grand Prix over the years. That is the most, taking into

:14:23.:14:32.

account the different tracks. Here at Silverstone, interestingly,

:14:32.:14:39.

Ferrari and McLaren are tied on wins with 12 apiece. The red cars have

:14:39.:14:49.
:14:49.:14:51.

had such a great run. The enthusiasm from the crowds here is always

:14:51.:14:55.

tremendous. It always has been. There were 80,000 people here

:14:55.:14:57.

yesterday, which is remarkable considering the weather was not

:14:58.:15:02.

fantastic. But it is testament to the enthusiasm there is for Formula

:15:02.:15:12.
:15:12.:15:14.

One in this country. Fantastic to see that support for Silverstone,

:15:14.:15:22.

fantastic. Just watching Fernando Alonso. TEAM RADIO: Nico Rosberg has

:15:23.:15:32.
:15:33.:15:35.

taken 50. That is interesting, but is interesting? They would usually

:15:35.:15:39.

apply the left foot brakes. Sixth place -- six would be the normal

:15:39.:15:44.

gear and that corner is not quick enough so you need to go to another

:15:44.:15:47.

gear to get that acceleration of the corner so that steadies the car, if

:15:47.:15:51.

you have the engine driving. You can stabilise by putting the power back

:15:51.:15:59.

on. Just watching Fernando Alonso, trying to get those tyres up to

:15:59.:16:03.

temperature. That is one of the biggest problems, the fact that that

:16:04.:16:07.

does not heed the tyres up quickly enough for a one lap and that pays

:16:08.:16:12.

dividends later in the race. It is like chicane and egg, you must

:16:12.:16:16.

decide which one you want to have first. Fernando Alonso has had two

:16:16.:16:22.

wins this year but he has had if you third places on the grid but

:16:22.:16:26.

qualifying has not been the strong point. They have been to recover and

:16:26.:16:30.

get those wins but the problem is that Red Bull are qualifying well

:16:31.:16:36.

and they seem to be getting on top of looking after those tyres?

:16:36.:16:41.

with my analysis, I look at speed and pure speed over the weekend and

:16:41.:16:46.

during the race relative to that. Let us follow this. I love this

:16:46.:16:55.

camera. On Valtteri Bottas. He comes through Becketts. The just how late

:16:55.:17:05.
:17:05.:17:07.

he can brake here. -- look just. We are into that really slow stuff,

:17:07.:17:13.

more about mechanical grip rather than downforce on the lesson as you

:17:13.:17:18.

start exonerating, that downforce has an effect? Yes but even through

:17:18.:17:24.

those slowest corners, but around 120 kilometres an hour, they still

:17:24.:17:29.

have 300 kilograms of downforce so it is really important. You can have

:17:29.:17:33.

that small change in the front wing but sometimes the driver will come

:17:33.:17:37.

back and that made more difference on slow speed rather than

:17:37.:17:43.

high-speed. Coming back to Red Bull, they seem to be getting a head

:17:43.:17:49.

around those tyres, that is the danger territory for everybody else?

:17:49.:17:53.

They have speed and qualifying and they also seem to be maintaining

:17:53.:18:01.

pace in the race at? The fastest lap time done by any over the weekend.

:18:01.:18:08.

Red Bull are just behind Mercedes but Mercedes are not the fastest car

:18:08.:18:13.

but Red Bull, performance of the race, they are not better in the

:18:13.:18:19.

race or worse, they are just doing a very good job. Tom, you are at Red

:18:19.:18:29.
:18:29.:18:30.

Bull? I am joined by Mark Webber boss, Alan. How emotional -- his

:18:30.:18:37.

father. How emotional is his retirement? He is the only one that

:18:37.:18:44.

really matters, if he is happy, we will not worry too much and we are

:18:44.:18:48.

very pleased for him. Were you expecting him to call it a day or

:18:48.:18:55.

two go longer? He has been having a pretty good talk with his mother and

:18:55.:18:59.

father and we were aware about what he was up to for quite a while.

:18:59.:19:05.

Final thoughts ongoing back to Le Mans, does that make you nervous?

:19:05.:19:11.

thought about that a bit because experience was not great there but

:19:11.:19:17.

the car are different and they have improved and they have got better

:19:17.:19:22.

aerodynamics. It will be OK. Final thought, has he had a rough deal at

:19:22.:19:28.

Red Bull? No, they have looked after him. He has enjoyed working with

:19:28.:19:36.

Adrian and he gets on particularly well with the manager. And he will

:19:36.:19:39.

have an ongoing relationship with Red Bull, which will be lovely.

:19:39.:19:49.
:19:49.:19:51.

Drama on the track, we have a tyre failure on Sergio Perez 's are.

:19:51.:19:57.

We're not sure why that red flag aside, unless there is debris. That

:19:57.:20:03.

might be the answer. You can see some very big chunks of rubber?

:20:03.:20:13.
:20:13.:20:13.

shall have to see how that happened. Big chunks, there. He says that the

:20:13.:20:19.

tar exploded. This is worrying. We have seen the lamination this year

:20:19.:20:26.

and failure from Felipe Massa, but this is something different? We will

:20:26.:20:34.

have to wait and see if we can get a replay. He has done six laps.

:20:34.:20:38.

Basically, there was no reason for that to happen. He has to come back

:20:38.:20:43.

to the pits. The driver does not know, maybe it was a puncture that

:20:43.:20:48.

lead to overheating. The outer sidewall is completely gone. That is

:20:48.:20:53.

a strange one. Normally, a tyre structure will stay together and the

:20:53.:21:00.

trade will come off. It might have been a puncture that overheats the

:21:00.:21:08.

shoulder of the tire. The marshals have been quick onto the scene. They

:21:08.:21:18.

had to do that to all the debris out of the way. A huge amount of debris.

:21:18.:21:22.

Not a particularly nice place for something like that to happen. He

:21:22.:21:26.

did not go off, big-time, because it is no damage to the tire but that

:21:26.:21:31.

was a worrying moment for everybody. Coming up towards Maggots and

:21:31.:21:38.

Becketts. Mexican flags in the crowd. Support for Sergio Perez. He

:21:38.:21:42.

has done a very good job to get that car back. Just going nice and

:21:42.:21:49.

slowly. Jenny, what do you see? rear left has been completely

:21:49.:21:56.

shredded. Pieces of rubber flapping around. It is absolutely destroyed.

:21:56.:22:00.

It could well have taken out the suspension as well. As we saw last

:22:00.:22:05.

week with Lewis Hamilton. The guys will start working on this. The

:22:05.:22:08.

sporting director will have a very good look and work out what is going

:22:08.:22:16.

on. And the second in charge at Pirelli has come out. He is just

:22:16.:22:21.

looking in, trying to work out what has happened. But a very wordy and

:22:21.:22:29.

failure. Whether it is a puncture or not, we shall try to find out. --

:22:30.:22:38.

very worrying failure. We can get the replay. No, we did not see the

:22:38.:22:44.

beginning of that. That replay was turning in. The left rear tyre

:22:44.:22:50.

looked OK at that point in time but that is where it could have failed.

:22:50.:22:55.

Just that shot from behind. We can see those bits of rubber but it had

:22:55.:22:59.

already disintegrated at that point. The new bonding process on the

:22:59.:23:04.

Pirelli tyres to stop those problems we had before but this does look

:23:04.:23:09.

like something different and maybe he had picked up some debris

:23:09.:23:16.

somewhere else. Difficult to know? It is. The bonding process between

:23:16.:23:20.

the rubber compound and the top of the steelwork so it is one of those

:23:20.:23:23.

things when the surface of the tire comes off, it leaves the structure

:23:23.:23:29.

of the tire but overheating the shoulders means that the

:23:29.:23:35.

construction of the tie will brake up and coming out of cops, there is

:23:35.:23:41.

a curve and there is that serrated curve, it is possible to get your

:23:41.:23:45.

tyres cut from that. We shall have to wait and see if we can get more

:23:45.:23:54.

information. It is possible. That is a matter of concern for McLaren. We

:23:54.:24:00.

are being told this will restart in just over one minute. As the clock

:24:00.:24:03.

continues to tick away. A lot of people will be checking their tyres

:24:04.:24:06.

even more closely to make sure there is nothing to worry about in the

:24:06.:24:11.

various other teams. So, the track is clear, the marshals have done

:24:11.:24:18.

their job. Thank you for getting in touch with us. Adam says, I still

:24:18.:24:23.

expect Webber to get pole position. He loves this track. I think that is

:24:23.:24:27.

possible, certainly read all are looking quick. And he does love this

:24:28.:24:33.

track. He lives not far away near Buckingham. It is very much a second

:24:33.:24:40.

home to him. Another says, who do you think will be the best Brit this

:24:40.:24:44.

weekend? Allen said Paul, then said Lewis Hamilton, James Allen

:24:45.:24:53.

yesterday... TEAM RADIO: in terms of temperature, it is not different,

:24:53.:25:03.

quite similar. The wind is also affecting it. It has a big effect.

:25:03.:25:08.

That is interesting, the wind is having quite a big effect. Alan said

:25:08.:25:12.

that it will be Paul di Resta, this is the chequered flag. This was at

:25:12.:25:20.

the chequered flag, who would you go for? For the race? I would say Paul

:25:20.:25:25.

di Resta could do that. I have a feeling those tyres look very

:25:25.:25:30.

consistent here and Force India can take advantage. I think it might be

:25:30.:25:36.

Jenson Button, I would love to say! But I don't think it will be. The

:25:36.:25:39.

McLaren is not performing and they are lacking downforce. They know

:25:39.:25:43.

they have plenty of work to do. Dan O'Connor, another question, do the

:25:43.:25:49.

wheels have Allen 's car is do they have balanced line-up marks like

:25:49.:25:54.

aircraft? Balanced weights, the wheel is a construction but it has

:25:54.:25:59.

the tire valve and the tire pressure and temperature sensors so that

:25:59.:26:05.

throws the balance out just a little bit and we are seeing that rear

:26:05.:26:12.

floor damage. When that tire broke up, it wipes out part of the floor.

:26:12.:26:16.

The rims have that tire pressure sensor so that throws the balance

:26:16.:26:23.

out. The tyres are balanced before being put on, at Pirelli. When the

:26:23.:26:26.

accommodation goes together, it is only I'd just a little bit and they

:26:26.:26:33.

have then been rebalanced. similar to road car is but slightly

:26:33.:26:37.

more sophisticated. What does it mean in the race when they give the

:26:38.:26:42.

driver more from wing? Were so involved, it is such an expression

:26:42.:26:51.

that we can use all the time but what does that mean? -- front wing.

:26:51.:26:54.

They have downforce distributed at the front and rear and if you do not

:26:54.:26:59.

have enough aerodynamic balance, it will under steer. The car will not

:26:59.:27:04.

turn as quickly as the driver wants so by putting on more front wing, it

:27:04.:27:08.

applies more angle to the flaps at the front wing to give him more

:27:08.:27:12.

downforce and more grip. Straightforward as that. Hope that

:27:12.:27:19.

answers your question. More front wing, more grip. Mark Webber on the

:27:19.:27:26.

track, down Wellington straight. Work still going on at McLaren as

:27:26.:27:31.

they set about changing the floor. This is a huge component Alonso

:27:31.:27:41.

vital? It creates 30% of the overall downforce. There is a chance that

:27:41.:27:44.

that area is critical and it will lose some downforce but maybe there

:27:44.:27:49.

is other damage, I don't know. But if I was there, I would have said,

:27:49.:27:54.

we have this deficit, let's run with it because are only 37 minutes to

:27:54.:27:58.

go, let's get more laps and think about the entire race. Forget about

:27:58.:28:02.

overall performance and think about durability and you might learn more

:28:02.:28:05.

from this morning and having the car parked in the garage. They have to

:28:05.:28:11.

worry about the limited time. Two hours between the end of this

:28:11.:28:16.

session and the start of qualifying. Still, they need to think about

:28:16.:28:21.

that. Looking down at Mark Webber, making his way around one of his

:28:21.:28:27.

favourite tracks but the fastest time at the moment, has just been

:28:27.:28:35.

taken by Mark Webber, no surprises. He is faster than Valtteri Bottas.

:28:35.:28:39.

Perez was faster before that incident. And there goes the remains

:28:39.:28:43.

of the tire, that technician from Pirelli, that'll be analysed

:28:43.:28:50.

somewhere secret! We might see a better replay but after that last

:28:50.:28:58.

question the front wing, to quantify aerodynamics, these fast corners are

:28:58.:29:02.

about 250 kilometres an hour and these cars generate about 1300 kg of

:29:02.:29:08.

downforce at that speed and 40% and that is on the front of the car,

:29:08.:29:12.

which is 520 kilograms of front downforce but when we see someone

:29:12.:29:16.

adjusting that front wing, he will be adding about five kilograms of

:29:17.:29:21.

load onto that front wing so it is a very small number and the driver can

:29:21.:29:23.

pick up such small numbers and the balance is so critical, those

:29:23.:29:29.

numbers are tiny. Five kilograms of front downforce can turn the car

:29:29.:29:33.

from under steer into good balance. Incredible. Bernie Ecclestone making

:29:33.:29:39.

his way through the paddock. Let's get back to the pits and the McLaren

:29:39.:29:47.

Joel thing -- McLaren managing director. What is the damage?

:29:47.:29:53.

extensive to the rear of the car and he does not recall hitting any kerb

:29:53.:29:58.

or anything so all we know is we had an instantaneous deflation, no

:29:58.:30:03.

warning, no sense of problems. We are focused on repairing the car and

:30:03.:30:09.

getting back out. To be fair to Pirelli, we need more time to do

:30:09.:30:12.

those forensics and collect the rest of the tire from the circuit and

:30:12.:30:14.

pasted together. As soon as we know, we will let you know. Just

:30:14.:30:24.
:30:24.:30:27.

unexpected. What damage was sustained? It looks fairly badly

:30:27.:30:33.

damaged, the rear floor diffuser. The boys have got a bit of work to

:30:33.:30:42.

do. Can McLaren turn it around to get out for qualifying? I hope so.

:30:42.:30:46.

There is no evidence of any damage to the gearbox at the moment.

:30:46.:30:54.

luck with the challenge. TOM CLARKSON: Something at that -- like

:30:54.:31:00.

that put a lot of load through. Hopefully if he is going slow

:31:00.:31:05.

enough, it will not do too much damage.

:31:05.:31:12.

Looking at him driving back there, you wonder how he can. The hydraulic

:31:12.:31:17.

differential pushes plates together, and you can adjust the

:31:17.:31:21.

pressure on the plates to make it lock more or not less. They have a

:31:21.:31:26.

Button on the steering wheel. You can just press the Button and it

:31:26.:31:31.

makes a differential. I don't see any problem with the gearbox. It

:31:31.:31:34.

should be OK. Sebastian Vettel comes through

:31:34.:31:44.
:31:44.:31:45.

Copse. Daniel Ricciardo, some people think he is going to be his

:31:45.:31:50.

replacement. Lewis Hamilton is sitting out of the car but with

:31:50.:31:54.

crash helmet on. He is ready to get back out. They are making some major

:31:55.:31:59.

changes, or he would be back in the car. He was not happy with the

:31:59.:32:05.

balance of it yesterday. I wonder if they are making it changes. Di Resta

:32:05.:32:11.

is currently third. It is still early stages. Erez is still fifth

:32:12.:32:21.
:32:22.:32:36.

Hulkenberg. Hamilton has only done a bit and is in 18th. Here we are

:32:36.:32:41.

watching Daniel Ricciardo. He is on another good lap at the moment. He

:32:41.:32:50.

is coming down Hangar Straight. He caught him pretty quickly, which

:32:50.:32:57.

would have been a wake-up call. But he dealt with it quickly. He had a

:32:57.:33:00.

good early sector. Let's see if this is going to be an improvement for

:33:00.:33:06.

him. He stays second, but it is a slightly better luck. Jean-Eric

:33:06.:33:10.

Vergne is also on track, and not surprisingly, we are keeping a close

:33:10.:33:14.

eye on these two at the moment. We know they are both under

:33:14.:33:21.

consideration. It is interesting. Up until this race, all of the doors

:33:21.:33:26.

were shut. Whenever Mark Webber decided to go on the sports cars,

:33:26.:33:31.

that opened a door. It is going to be interesting to see who is going

:33:31.:33:36.

to pick the ball up, who is going to give something. Jean-Eric Vergne has

:33:36.:33:46.
:33:46.:33:47.

just gone second furthest -- fastest. They are all potentially

:33:47.:33:50.

drivers for Red Bull. It is going to be interesting to see who can pick

:33:50.:33:58.

it up. Let's look at a long low here. What has he been up to? --

:33:58.:34:08.
:34:08.:34:09.

Fernando Alonso. He needs a bit more front wing. A few more kilos on the

:34:09.:34:17.

front end! Lewis Hamilton is complaining about the opposite.

:34:17.:34:22.

Maybe the wind is having an effect here. It is going to make life more

:34:22.:34:26.

difficult. A couple more questions. Alex says, should the teams be

:34:27.:34:36.
:34:37.:34:39.

worried about the tyres when they delaminate? I think we have to wait

:34:40.:34:46.

and see. My biggest worry about the problems we have had with the tyres

:34:46.:34:50.

is that it is not consistent enough to be, in my book, a manufacturing

:34:50.:34:56.

problem. It is more like a quality control problem. It is a bit random.

:34:56.:35:01.

Again, if this, for any reason, was the same problem, again, there have

:35:01.:35:05.

been races before with this problem, but suddenly it pops up

:35:05.:35:10.

with one tyre. If I was running a team, I would be trying to work some

:35:10.:35:17.

way of getting my own analysis done on the tyres. In the Mercedes pit,

:35:17.:35:23.

still not a lot of action. Rosberg is in his car ready to go. He has

:35:23.:35:27.

had three pole positions this year. The battle in qualifying between

:35:27.:35:30.

himself and Lewis Hamilton has been pretty intense. Hamilton still has

:35:30.:35:38.

the edge. We have had seven events so far, and Hamilton is up 4-3. But

:35:38.:35:43.

it is Rosberg who has had the most pole positions. Hamilton has had

:35:43.:35:50.

just one. It is a great, great rivalry that we are witnessing. We

:35:50.:35:55.

are just watching Daniel Ricciardo again. He is now back down into

:35:55.:36:01.

third place. Fourth, rather. Di Resta has gone third. Another good

:36:01.:36:11.
:36:11.:36:16.

luck by Paul di Resta. -- another good lap. Now, picking up the

:36:16.:36:26.
:36:26.:36:27.

throttle. Quite an early gear change just to keel. I was going to say

:36:27.:36:32.

that it is an interesting tussle between them. Both Daniel Ricardo

:36:32.:36:36.

and Jean-Eric Vergne come up through Formula three. They note the circuit

:36:36.:36:43.

pretty well. -- they know. This track can be used in many layouts.

:36:43.:36:50.

It will give them both the added confidence. They both now have a lot

:36:50.:36:56.

of F1 milage. Ricciardo has been doing it a bit longer. The time is

:36:56.:37:02.

right to make a choice between them. If I was choosing, up until about

:37:03.:37:06.

two races ago, if I was choosing one of them, it would have to be a flick

:37:06.:37:12.

of a coin but it would go towards Ricciardo. In the last couple of

:37:12.:37:15.

races, it looks like Jean-Eric Vergne has come on. He seems to have

:37:15.:37:21.

been going forward. But the qualifying in the last couple of

:37:21.:37:25.

races has been affected by rain a bit, and then we have had Monaco,

:37:25.:37:29.

which is always exceptional. Can you read the races in the same way as

:37:29.:37:35.

the others? If there is a potential of picking something up and running

:37:35.:37:40.

with it, it is the driver that picks it up that you want. They are close

:37:40.:37:47.

enough to say that the pure speed will come. But, like Bottas in

:37:47.:37:57.
:37:57.:37:59.

Montreal, rain came and he qualified in third.

:37:59.:38:02.

Person-macro has had a disappointing run recently. At the start of the

:38:02.:38:08.

season he was consistent. He is still an enigma. We are still

:38:08.:38:13.

waiting to see the consistent run of performances by dealing with

:38:13.:38:16.

everything that has been thrown at him. There's no denying he has pace

:38:16.:38:22.

on his day. At the moment, he is 11th fastest. He has set a personal

:38:22.:38:29.

best in the first sector. That is about half a second off the best we

:38:29.:38:32.

have seen in that first sector. I wonder what the second sector is

:38:32.:38:42.
:38:42.:38:44.

going to look like. 38.2 he has done here. The best was Mark Webber.

:38:44.:38:50.

If you look at the back of the Lotus, there is no periscope. You

:38:50.:38:57.

have got this horseshoe wing. They have got a very low bodywork on the

:38:57.:39:07.
:39:07.:39:07.

cards. -- on the cars. It is too different specifications for the

:39:07.:39:12.

cars. We were talking about Lotus. Tom,

:39:13.:39:22.
:39:23.:39:23.

you are down at the pit garage. We have got a really graphic

:39:23.:39:27.

illustration of how the DIS works today. On Kimi Raikkonen 's car, if

:39:27.:39:33.

you look at the airbox, either side, there are some deals. On this car,

:39:33.:39:43.
:39:43.:39:43.

the deals are open today. -- deals. On Rome and grow John 's car, you

:39:43.:39:47.

can see that they are closed. That signifies that he is running

:39:47.:39:52.

different bodywork on his car. He is not going to be using the double

:39:52.:39:58.

system. Lovely to have that comparison

:39:58.:40:04.

directly there. Very clear that one is running with and one without. As

:40:04.:40:12.

a technical director, Gary, what is the thinking there?

:40:12.:40:17.

You are trying to pack as much as you can into a given weekend. If you

:40:17.:40:23.

get the running and the session times in you had as much information

:40:23.:40:32.

up -- if you get the running and the session times in, you have as much

:40:32.:40:40.

information as you can. You are not any loud -- allowed any testing. You

:40:40.:40:47.

have to get as much out of it as you can. Unless you are Mercedes!

:40:47.:40:56.

just let that in there. No damage done there. Interesting

:40:56.:41:01.

that a lot of new rules have been announced for next year. In season

:41:01.:41:06.

testing has become a part of Formula One again. You wonder whether all of

:41:06.:41:09.

the controversy about the Mercedes test and Pirelli complaining they

:41:09.:41:13.

were not allowed to run their tyres anywhere, at least it seems to have

:41:13.:41:21.

led to a bit more logic in terms of testing for next year.

:41:21.:41:27.

It is ideal for these teams. They are trying to make things work.

:41:27.:41:34.

Those parts, which cost a lot of money, are ending up in the bin. If

:41:34.:41:37.

you can plan your development, the cars can step forward. That is the

:41:37.:41:42.

important thing. For the moment we are focused on

:41:42.:41:45.

what is happening here at Silverstone. Hamilton has gone

:41:45.:41:51.

quickest while we have been chatting. He is only a fraction

:41:51.:41:55.

faster than Webber. None the less, it is faster. That is going to boost

:41:55.:42:02.

his confidence. A big slider therefrom matter. -- a big slide

:42:02.:42:12.
:42:12.:42:18.

It changes so much. Felipe Massa is on the medium tyre. I am not sure

:42:18.:42:24.

what he is up to. His spirits are OK but he does not look like being

:42:24.:42:31.

fastest of all. -- his splits. Might have expected something bigger than

:42:31.:42:41.
:42:41.:42:44.

that. Sometimes the Ferrari does struggle to get temperature. It

:42:44.:42:48.

depends on the balance of the car. If you have a car that wants some

:42:49.:42:52.

traction, a medium tyre will help. With under steer, it will make it

:42:53.:43:01.

understeer more. Let's watch this from this camera.

:43:02.:43:11.
:43:12.:43:14.

He goes through Abbey. Let's look at the oversteer from Felipe Massa.

:43:14.:43:21.

That was a big armful in a Formula One car.

:43:21.:43:26.

He made a mistake on the way in. It was not a balance problem, it was a

:43:26.:43:31.

Felipe Massa problem inflicted by the wind. When he had his crash

:43:31.:43:36.

yesterday, he was on a prototype Pirelli tyre. He said afterwards

:43:36.:43:40.

that it was a hard tyre and basically he had not got enough

:43:41.:43:45.

temperature into it. It caught him out. The prototype is not being used

:43:45.:43:50.

today and will not be used for the rest of the weekend.

:43:50.:44:00.

An extra set of tyres could be taken and voted off. -- taken and voted

:44:00.:44:10.
:44:10.:44:12.

He is still on the hard compound tyre. He is only relatively new set

:44:12.:44:22.
:44:22.:44:24.

of compound tyre. -- on a relatively new set. He is down on Webber in the

:44:25.:44:29.

middle sector. But this final sector, let's just see. The Mercedes

:44:29.:44:34.

is usually pretty good in the tight stuff will stop across the line, and

:44:34.:44:39.

no, not quicker than Hamilton, but on a par with him. Hamilton and

:44:39.:44:49.
:44:49.:44:56.

Rosberg, 124 -- both for Mercedes. This is something that we will see,

:44:56.:45:01.

watching Fernando Alonso here, the fact here is that you get lap times

:45:01.:45:11.
:45:11.:45:13.

that are separated by thousands of a second. At any point, between

:45:13.:45:17.

Hamilton and Rosberg, who could have been three tenths of a second but

:45:17.:45:22.

when you add that up, one man is better in one section and one is

:45:22.:45:27.

better in another. What we see with these tyres, the harder tyres, it

:45:27.:45:31.

does not seem to have any degradation. Looking at those long

:45:31.:45:36.

runs yesterday, they looked very stable and those medium tyres, maybe

:45:36.:45:41.

a fraction but nothing much. I at this race as a potential 1-stop for

:45:41.:45:46.

teams like Force India and two stops for the man who will win this race.

:45:46.:45:51.

That is a great camera position. Inside the front wheel. You can see

:45:51.:45:57.

that carbon fibre shield. Stopping the airflow. Trying to make that

:45:57.:46:02.

smoother on the inside. And on the top, that is eating up the error

:46:02.:46:06.

coming from the front wing and trying to redirect it just to make

:46:07.:46:14.

it more acceptable to the side pockets. Maldonado. At big slide.

:46:14.:46:20.

And he ends up running out of road. That was a lovely shot, for a while!

:46:21.:46:27.

He just needs more steering lock! Not quite enough! Dramatic stuff

:46:28.:46:33.

from Pastor Maldonado. As Williams enjoyed their 600th Grand Prix

:46:33.:46:41.

celebrations. They have the combination. Paul di Resta making

:46:41.:46:45.

that same error. Whether it is to do with the wind direction by the does

:46:45.:46:51.

seem to reflect quite a few people. I would pitted down to wind. More

:46:51.:46:54.

steering lock and the wider track and less speed. That is the easiest

:46:54.:47:04.
:47:04.:47:07.

thing to come by. More questions. If they car has a puncture, have the

:47:07.:47:10.

team effectively lost one complete set of tyres? Know, if you have a

:47:10.:47:19.

puncture, and it is recognised as a puncture, the FIA will allow you to

:47:19.:47:24.

replace that one tire with something from the Friday practice session of

:47:24.:47:31.

the same age. So you can replace it, yes. Hamilton has just set the

:47:31.:47:35.

fastest middle sector time of anybody. He is on those harder

:47:35.:47:38.

compound tyres. He has gone for another quick lap. While Webber has

:47:38.:47:44.

gone quicker but this could be faster and again. Very even between

:47:44.:47:49.

Red Bull and Mercedes. Hamilton takes three tenths out of the Red

:47:49.:47:53.

Bull. That was a good lap from Lewis Hamilton and it shows that Mercedes

:47:53.:47:56.

could be in the battle for pole position. And still on those harder

:47:56.:48:04.

tyres. It is staying very stable. To go back to that puncture, the battle

:48:04.:48:08.

drives through the gravel trap and gets a puncture, no, they will not

:48:08.:48:12.

replace the tire but if it is genuinely due to debris on the

:48:12.:48:20.

track, yes. Rosberg going into that second place. What is Sebastian

:48:20.:48:28.

Vettel doing? Not a huge amount at the moment. He has done 14 laps

:48:28.:48:30.

presumably he is concentrating on race running. His times have not

:48:30.:48:40.
:48:40.:48:41.

been that quick. He has sorted it out without any major consequences.

:48:41.:48:45.

Ferrari are about half of the second of, perhaps more, on the ultimate

:48:45.:48:52.

pace. Another question. As an engineer, do you feel that the teams

:48:52.:48:57.

prefer the new circuit layout at Silverstone or the older one?

:48:57.:49:03.

don't think there is any real difference. Then you start finish

:49:03.:49:08.

line is quite demanding so it is pretty good. -- the new start -

:49:08.:49:18.

finish line. The old pets at Silverstone, this new place is

:49:18.:49:24.

fantastic but it is not Silverstone. The character has -- the character

:49:24.:49:28.

of this place has changed with this new wing but it will be gradually

:49:28.:49:33.

built up as more investment comes and once that comes, it will perhaps

:49:33.:49:36.

make more of the centre of this whole new facility and it will

:49:36.:49:41.

become the hub of the circuit. We could see Hulkenberg making a

:49:41.:49:45.

similar error, so it is really affecting a lot of people. Final

:49:45.:49:55.
:49:55.:49:57.

question... How much shaking and vibration does go on in the car? How

:49:57.:50:03.

smooth is the right? If you compare that to most people on road cars,

:50:03.:50:07.

perhaps a stiff sports car, but they vibration in Formula one is

:50:07.:50:13.

different? Yes, it is a strange thing because when you talk about

:50:13.:50:16.

high-performance sports cars on the road, they have low profile tyres

:50:16.:50:19.

and that is where you get most of the vibration and feedback. These

:50:19.:50:26.

are high-profile so they absorb a lot that impact. They take the

:50:26.:50:31.

high-speed vibration out of that but in retrospect, that affects the car.

:50:31.:50:35.

What the driver feels is the steering wheel, if the whalers out

:50:35.:50:43.

of balance, it will vibrate. And he can feel every little tremble,

:50:43.:50:48.

everything that is running. If it is running smoothly, that is when those

:50:48.:50:53.

big vibrations start. If you are leading with five laps, every little

:50:53.:51:00.

change. But you will feel circuit vibrations but nothing really from

:51:00.:51:06.

the car itself. Kimi Raikkonen on the circuit. He has just done a

:51:06.:51:10.

Ursula Best in the first sector. Jenny, what are the chances of

:51:10.:51:17.

Sergio Perez getting back out? Pretty good, helmet is on, and he is

:51:17.:51:21.

in the car. The team have done an amazing job, they have replaced the

:51:21.:51:26.

floor, the rear bodywork and the rear wing. They have got it's that

:51:26.:51:32.

they have welded onto the car. It is a really good turnaround from

:51:33.:51:40.

McLaren and they will hope to get him out for the last few minutes.

:51:40.:51:44.

Back on board with Kimi Raikkonen. Pretty good lap, this, but not quite

:51:44.:51:50.

on the pace of Mercedes. It will be up there with Red Bull and Ferrari.

:51:50.:51:54.

He is on the medium compound tyres and they set their times on the

:51:54.:52:00.

harder tyre. Only six days. That is disappointing, bearing in mind he is

:52:00.:52:10.
:52:10.:52:12.

on the softer rivers compound tyres? -- softer of those compound tyres.

:52:12.:52:16.

They are the hardest of the Pirelli tyres so that makes it just that

:52:16.:52:20.

little bit more difficult. Yes, certainly Lotus are looking at those

:52:20.:52:25.

tyre choices from Pirelli. Which compound. They will be for the

:52:25.:52:30.

softer tyres to come along and Hungary they feel aggrieved because

:52:30.:52:34.

Pirelli have chosen to go for the harder compound than they were

:52:34.:52:38.

hoping for. But they were very quick in Hungary last year so that might

:52:38.:52:44.

have an effect. Currently, Hamilton is fastest. Ahead of his team-mate,

:52:44.:52:54.
:52:54.:52:55.

Rosberg. We expect to see some more out others medium tyres in a few

:52:55.:53:05.
:53:05.:53:14.

moments. -- on those medium tyres. Barton is in 13th place. -- autumn.

:53:14.:53:19.

-- Jenson Button. The team director for McLaren keeping an eye on

:53:19.:53:24.

things. He has been doing work on the similar. Hopefully that will

:53:24.:53:28.

help McLaren move further. Charles Pic is the fastest of the younger

:53:28.:53:35.

teams. Driving for Caterham. Sebastian Vettel, done in 20th

:53:35.:53:45.
:53:45.:53:49.

place, he has not been looking at the lap times at all. Chilton is

:53:49.:53:56.

21st. This will change quite a lot in the remaining 11 minutes of the

:53:56.:54:01.

session? This is the time to take the view will dine. They will not go

:54:01.:54:06.

to low fuel and they will go down to about 20 or 30 kilograms, put on

:54:06.:54:11.

those medium tyres and go for one lap to similar qualifying just to

:54:11.:54:14.

understand the car and how those tyres work in those conditions.

:54:14.:54:18.

Early important for qualifying. is why you talk about fuel in

:54:18.:54:23.

kilograms not litres? Litres and gallons, if you have a quantity of

:54:24.:54:27.

fuel, temperature makes a few will get bigger and smaller so if you

:54:28.:54:33.

have fuel at 10 degrees, and you think you have 50 litres, at 25

:54:33.:54:38.

degrees you will think it is 51. It is not as accurate. Stays the same.

:54:38.:54:44.

The difference is, one litre of fuel is about not with 75 kilograms. It

:54:44.:54:54.
:54:54.:54:59.

is the best reference. -- three quarters of a kilogram. Like Jenson

:54:59.:55:04.

Button, Felipe Massa has never been on the podium and he has never led

:55:04.:55:08.

any lap at Silverstone. Slightly odd statistics that Silverstone throws

:55:08.:55:13.

up some of these top drivers. Fernando Alonso has done well in the

:55:13.:55:21.

past. He had a couple of wins and Mark Webber also. But the all-time

:55:21.:55:26.

record setter, Jim Clark and Alain Prost, five wins each in the British

:55:26.:55:31.

Grand Prix. Jim Clark had an amazing run in the 60s when he won them

:55:31.:55:36.

back-to-back. Incredible. It was as tough to win races back then as it

:55:36.:55:42.

is now. It was just as tough. challenge was just as much. We can

:55:42.:55:47.

see Perez coming out. All those harder tyres. He has not gone for

:55:47.:55:57.
:55:57.:56:01.

the medium compound. Let us see if we can get a chance to watch this.

:56:01.:56:05.

That seems to work pretty well and when it comes to this art itself,

:56:05.:56:09.

they will be on a level piece of tarmac running towards the first

:56:09.:56:14.

corner. It is a very fast first corner, you really get a chance to

:56:14.:56:19.

carry some speed in to turn on one. Doing these practice tracks, it's

:56:19.:56:24.

not just about the good start, it is about making sure you go through the

:56:24.:56:26.

procedures correctly and the engineers have got everything

:56:27.:56:30.

working. It is more about making sure the system works than the

:56:30.:56:37.

actual times. 8.5 minutes left. Let's get down to the pets with

:56:37.:56:43.

Tom... You have to feel sorry for Felipe Massa 's mechanics because

:56:43.:56:47.

last night was a late-night changing the front end and they are now

:56:47.:56:50.

working on the rear end, changing the engine of this Ferrari.

:56:50.:56:54.

According to the team, it is precautionary. They would not

:56:54.:56:59.

elaborate. It is busy and he will not be out before the end of the

:56:59.:57:09.
:57:09.:57:11.

session. Jenny? The Mercedes garage have been doing quite a lot to the

:57:11.:57:21.
:57:21.:57:23.

front end. There are some inlets on the front side, there. Hooked up

:57:23.:57:27.

with some carbon fibre and on the other side, not hooked up. That is

:57:28.:57:30.

an interesting difference. And they have also been working on the front

:57:30.:57:40.
:57:40.:57:42.

suspension, changing some settings. Lewis Hamilton is not happy. They

:57:42.:57:46.

connect up to the leading edge of the floor, the low pressure is

:57:46.:57:50.

sucking the air through, like a vacuum cleaner. And that little

:57:50.:57:56.

strip of titanium across the bottom makes it legal. You cannot have any

:57:56.:58:00.

surface without a vertical surface. That makes everything legal. It will

:58:00.:58:04.

not change performance, but it would be illegal if you try to run the car

:58:05.:58:12.

with that and if you have gone over a kerb and it is broken, so be it.

:58:12.:58:18.

Hamilton is fastest. Into the final stages of morning practice at

:58:18.:58:22.

Silverstone in the build-up to the qualifying. I wonder whether Lewis

:58:22.:58:26.

Hamilton will be able to challenge for pole position? Mercedes have

:58:26.:58:29.

done this on plenty of occasions this year. Only Red Bull and

:58:29.:58:33.

Mercedes have taken pole position this year, no other team has had a

:58:33.:58:39.

look in. Ferrari have not been as fast, war Lotus. It looks like

:58:39.:58:43.

another Mercedes versus Red Bull battle for pole position and we have

:58:44.:58:48.

to go back to the thousand and seven four Lewis Hamilton 's first race at

:58:48.:58:55.

Silverstone in a Formula one and that was it last time a British

:58:55.:59:01.

driver had pole position here. He had a brilliant win in the wet the

:59:01.:59:06.

following season. But his only pole position here was his very first

:59:06.:59:12.

year in 2007. Which cars are on medium tyres? Most of them?

:59:12.:59:20.

Everybody, really. Nico Rosberg is still in the pits. Adrian Sutil,

:59:20.:59:24.

still on those harder tyres. Five minutes to go. This is shootout

:59:24.:59:33.

time. Maldonado, 33.4. Maybe the next lap will be quicker. That is

:59:33.:59:41.

his best lap so far. We are not on board with Hulkenberg. He did 34.5.

:59:41.:59:47.

That was earlier on the harder tyres. We will just keep an eye and

:59:48.:59:55.

see what he does on this lap. I am sure this will be quite flat-out.

:59:55.:59:59.

Will anybody improve massively? Daniel Ricciardo is on a slightly

:59:59.:00:05.

outer lap and he did earlier on. Paul di Resta, he could be looking

:00:05.:00:10.

at a slight improvement. Valtteri Bottas crosses the line, that is a

:00:10.:00:15.

slight improvement. Sebastian Vettel suddenly beginning to go quickly.

:00:15.:00:19.

Fernando Alonso... He is on medium tyres. Relatively quick middle

:00:19.:00:29.
:00:29.:00:33.

sector. Certainly not the quickest. That will have cost a 10th or so, I

:00:33.:00:40.

would have thought. That lap was a fraction slower than he achieved on

:00:41.:00:47.

the hard tyres earlier. They have this working range area.

:00:47.:00:50.

Before it was the supersoft and medium that would work on high

:00:50.:00:57.

temperatures. They change the supersoft, but the medium still once

:00:57.:01:07.

to work on a high temperature. -- still wants to work. Perez has been.

:01:07.:01:17.

-- has been off. I think this is in the Becketts area. He is having a

:01:17.:01:25.

troubled time. He was only quick lap. -- on a quick lap.

:01:25.:01:30.

He went out on a hard tyre and made a mistake. We have not seen it yet

:01:30.:01:37.

but we will get a replay. Here we It is that Becketts section. It is

:01:37.:01:43.

what we have seen a lot. He ran out of road completely. He did not make

:01:43.:01:47.

any contact with the barrier, thankfully.

:01:47.:01:51.

Once you turn to the right for the last part of the corner, it makes a

:01:51.:01:57.

big difference. Because he had his spin, several had to back off,

:01:57.:02:02.

including Webber, who was fastest in the first sector out of everybody,

:02:02.:02:12.
:02:12.:02:13.

and Vettel, who had been very quick in the first sector. Webber I think

:02:13.:02:16.

potentially had a better lap there. He had to back off because of Perez

:02:16.:02:26.
:02:26.:02:28.

going off. Grosjean is also on a lap. He is currently 17th. Here we

:02:28.:02:34.

are, riding with the Frenchman. He has got to prove himself in the

:02:34.:02:38.

remaining part of this year. That has got to be his target. He does

:02:38.:02:45.

improve his time. That is on the softer of the two compoundss of

:02:45.:02:53.

tyre. They have got this hydraulic

:02:54.:03:03.

suspension system. It allows the car to be more compliant. It moves the

:03:03.:03:08.

front load of the car to the rear. It gets a drag reduction, and making

:03:08.:03:14.

the car low at the rear is better for that.

:03:14.:03:18.

Rosberg gained about half a second there from the time he did early on

:03:18.:03:27.

the medium compound tyre. That is about right. Hamilton is

:03:27.:03:30.

going to be the interesting one. They are the front running, quick

:03:30.:03:35.

cars. We are just finishing the lap here

:03:35.:03:45.

with Ricciardo. Let's see how this changes. 32.5, so he is a 10th

:03:45.:03:50.

slower on the tyres than he was. Lewis has backed off, mid-sector.

:03:50.:03:54.

Let's have a look at what has happened. He was quick in the first

:03:54.:04:04.

sector. Then something happened. Oh, now, that is a strange one. What

:04:04.:04:08.

a strange oversteer, mid-corner. He didn't seem to be doing anything

:04:08.:04:18.
:04:18.:04:20.

odd. Well, very mysterious. He backed off on that lap. I wonder

:04:21.:04:26.

whether he is going to be able to get another lap. His team-mate now.

:04:26.:04:33.

As you can see, he's a couple of tenthss up on the time Hamilton set

:04:33.:04:40.

earlier. It is a long lap. 3.6 miles, the second longest in Formula

:04:40.:04:50.

One. But it is a high-speed one. Rosberg has been underrated for a

:04:50.:04:54.

long while. He is up there with the top guys in this Championship at the

:04:54.:04:59.

moment. No doubt about that. His performances this year have been

:05:00.:05:09.

outstanding. Perez, by the way, is back in the McLaren pit and is not

:05:09.:05:13.

going to be taking any further part in this session. It is a difficult

:05:13.:05:21.

way for him to go into qualifying. Let's watch the end of the lap. Just

:05:21.:05:24.

a little correction therefrom Rosberg. Could be a good lap. He

:05:24.:05:34.
:05:34.:05:42.

goes fastest. 1: 31.48. I think that is about what the time

:05:42.:05:49.

and advantage will be. Hamilton is doing his second flying

:05:49.:05:59.
:05:59.:05:59.

lap on the medium tyre. Again, they are very evenly matched. Not much to

:05:59.:06:06.

choose between them. Vettel, on his lap. This is in the ballpark. Not

:06:06.:06:14.

quite there, though. Six tenths down on the Mercedes. Mercedes had got

:06:14.:06:18.

the edge and we could be on for another duel between Lewis Hamilton

:06:18.:06:23.

and his team-mate for opposition. But let's see. Red Bull might be

:06:23.:06:27.

running more fuel at this stage. We have seen that at several points

:06:27.:06:36.

this year. There is Sergio Perez. It has been a difficult session for

:06:36.:06:41.

him. He has completed just nine laps in this session compared to the

:06:41.:06:49.

18-20 laps, maybe even 22, of some of his rivals. Bottas 25 laps. I

:06:49.:06:57.

think that it is the most of anybody. Mercedes, you would think

:06:57.:07:00.

they would be looking happier than that. They are all a bit glum at the

:07:00.:07:06.

moment. I don't think Lewis is happy. He

:07:06.:07:13.

just missed the apex. That is the area he is struggling in. He is not,

:07:13.:07:20.

the ball with the breaking of the cars. Every corner is a problem. --

:07:20.:07:27.

he is not comfortable. They have got a couple of hours to make the final

:07:27.:07:32.

changes to the cars. The changes are applying to the race as well as

:07:32.:07:36.

qualifying. Once the car appears for qualifying, then how it is set-up is

:07:36.:07:40.

basically how it has to be set up for the race.

:07:40.:07:49.

It looks like they have kept the spear. -- the speed. I assume the

:07:49.:07:56.

cars are still quick. Yesterday, the times were not bad.

:07:56.:08:01.

Ross Brawn made the point yesterday that in Malaysia, they had a quick

:08:01.:08:05.

car and they never got to the point where the tyres, as he put it,

:08:05.:08:08.

reached the cliff and were able to sustain good performance. They were

:08:08.:08:13.

battling for the podium, Hamilton and Rosberg. If they reach that

:08:13.:08:17.

level, they are not going beyond the practical effect of the tyres and

:08:17.:08:20.

they have got it good chance in the race. Let's run through the

:08:20.:08:30.
:08:30.:08:45.

positions. It is Mercedes in one and concern. He is still off the pace

:08:45.:08:55.
:08:55.:08:58.

set by McLaren -- Rosberg in the Mercedes. Massa is done in 15th.

:08:58.:09:05.

Can we read anything into the fact that Vettel took so long to do a

:09:05.:09:11.

fast lap? Is it supreme confidence? The races where you get the points

:09:11.:09:14.

tomorrow. That is the important thing on Sunday. After today, you

:09:14.:09:19.

know the car will go quicker with less fuel. He knows the track. It is

:09:19.:09:24.

about knowing the balance of the car for the risk tomorrow.

:09:24.:09:30.

Quickly, this wind seems to be picking up. That is going to make a

:09:30.:09:33.

difference, isn't it coming qualifying?

:09:33.:09:37.

Through Becketts, there are four corners and they all different

:09:37.:09:42.

directions. It is important to go in with a controlled speed. Many people

:09:42.:09:46.

are going off will stop you have to be very careful with your speed

:09:46.:09:51.
