fast cars! That is the Great British signed! -- signed. There is no sound

quite like it in the world! Welcome to the live coverage of the British

Grand Prix from Silverstone. This is qualifying and there is plenty to

talk about. Last time, three weeks ago in Canada, there was some great

racing. Boy, it was good! Light side, away we go! Sebastian Vettel

gets off the line very well. Mark Webber makes a very good start. --

lights out. Trying to shut the door and he gets in front of him. He

spins in front of the rest of the pack! Complete 360. There was

contact! He brakes too late. He makes contact with Force India. My

goodness! Gutierrez. 12 players. He has done more overtaking than

anybody else so far today. TEAM RADIO: do what you can to gain speed

without losing performance. He is losing his place as a result.

right rear tyre. He did not manage to get that seated so he had to go

back under. He goes down and post the quick release. Felipe Massa!

He'd just gives him only one car 's with, there. Adrian Sutil, defending

well. Finally gets in front of Mercedes. Fernando Alonso is unable

to do likewise. OK, some contact with Red Bull. We can see the wing.

He is heading to turn one. Eagles defensive on the inside. Fernando

Alonso on the outside and he has moved into the podium position! Into

third place! Look at the book and front wing! Stuck under his car,

dragging it around the track. stopped, probably the wisest thing

to do. Here we go, Fernando Alonso taking second place! And Lewis

Hamilton is back down to third place. Some -- Sebastian Vettel has

taken victory for red Bull. Hamilton finishes in third. That resounding

victory mean Sebastian Vettel is 36 points above Fernando Alonso Lewis

Hamilton is fourth in the second Red Bull of Mark Webber is in fifth

place. And Red Bull are looking strong in the constructors

Championship with Force India still ahead of McLaren. It's easy over the

weekend with the British Grand Prix at Silverstone we have Wimbledon,

Glastonbury, MotoGP and athletics why would you want to leave your

sofa! In the company of David Coulthard, Eddie Jordan and trouble

Le Mans 24 hour when! Round of applause for Alan! Yes, that was a

fantastic achievement, we work very hard over the winter to make this

happen and needed a perfect job, the car ran faultlessly from start to

finish. Three victories was much nicer than two of them and it came

nicer this time. Mixed emotions? There was a lot of emotion when

standing on the podium, it is a fantastic situation. On the other

side, with the tragic accident of Alan Summerson at the start of the

race and the loss of his life, that was quite a sad moment. However, my

Danish team-mate said best when he dedicated his victory and our

victory towards his memory. Well done. Congratulations on your three

victories and it seems like a very long time since we were racing cars

back in Scotland! Not that long ago! After Canada, we also heard the sad

news that Marshal Mark Robinson had been killed. After the Canadian

Grand Prix. And last night the Formula one community united with

all of the marshals and volunteers to hold one-minute 's silence. And

they are the unsung heroes and their sport could not happen without those

volunteers? Without question, they are an integral part of the sport

and it could not happen. There were days, we remember them in many ways

but we appreciate them so much more then what we did in the past.

great thing about this is the absolute fans and this gives them a

slightly better opportunity than just paying for a Seat. They can

push the car when needed and actually help people. They get

involved and that is the great thing about being a Marshall. There is a

great trick afterwards for themselves and they can be friends.

There is much more to this than just looking after the car on the track.

They are also on professionals. is what I really admire. Their

dedication is the same as the highly paid mechanics. We salute them and

on Sunday, you can get involved with grass-roots motor sport. Held right

here at Silverstone, the home of greeted with the news that after

nine victories, 11 pole positions and 36 podiums, Mark Webber has

decided to quit F1 to go sports car racing so Lee went to get his

thoughts. Exciting news for you? timing is very good. To make this

decision. I have really enjoyed my time in F1, it has been a career

that I am proud of and I want to add to those memories and have some

special locations but the opportunity was there to do this and

as I say, the timing was right. I have known for a while, I took all

of you guys had for dinner in Australia for dinner in March so I

knew it was my last Australian Grand Prix. It is quite weird because I

have known for quite a while but it is quite liberating. I can just

obviously be even more honest with you guys! I do know how sentimental

you are but when you leave Montreal and Silverstone, do you think, that

is that done? Yes, I had that at Albert Park and also in Monaco. I

was on the podium. Yes, there is a little bit of that going on but you

must be real with yourself, you just know that when it comes to the top

light sport, it is not going to be forever. I have had some tremendous

opportunities and great Roberts and I could not have imagined when I

left Queensland, I would have done what I did. Would a manager as good

advice for whom might take your Seat? He might do, my relationship

has been very good and I will continue to be involved with red or

going forward. -- the team. I have a very good line-up with them and I

will continue to support and do some exciting things with the brand, with

athletes pushing boundaries. His car is being prepared for qualifying,

and he was an accomplished driver in Formula one. Retiring at the end of

the season. The right time to go? Jerry, he feels this is the right

time so that makes it the right time. There has been much

speculation as to when he might call time other drivers might get that

opportunity. He has a great opportunity with sports car racing.

He has had a great career and has come up short in the World

Championship so far but there is a long way to go this season. You must

always try to get -- give the sport up, don't let the sport give you up!

Subtle difference but very important. Lee has the rest of the

news... Mercedes and Pirelli have been given a reprimand at the

tribunal in Paris. Mercedes had taken part in a Pirelli tyre test

using a 2013 car with both were strivers which other teams said was

against the rules. In cities have also been banned from taking part in

the young driver test. We have got permission but whether or not that

permission was correct, and the tribunal has said we would not have

done the test if we did not have permission. Those are the important

factors. Mark Webber has announced he is leaving but his team-mate has

committed for another year. The travel world champion will stay

until at least the end of 2015 but who will be alongside? Kimi

Raikkonen is the man everyone expects to be his team-mate but he

is not giving much away. I have no contract and I will shortly be

talking with certain people. Like I said, if I knew, I would tell.

for British drivers, Silverstone fans should have plenty to cheer

about the reality might be tougher. Lewis Hamilton hopes to raise smiles

today, at least. The excitement, I am looking forward to seeing how

many fans turn up and I hope we have good weather for them and that we

can get a very good result for them. Jenson Button hasn't a difficult few

races and in Canada he said he has never been so glad to get out of his

car. Karen have been working hard in the last couple of weeks to give the

driver something to smile about, let alone his fans. We fight and we get

the best out of the car and we can still get a result here and

hopefully that will be enough for the fans. We feel we need to repay

them for all of their support. Especially this year. Paul di Resta

has good points and six of the seven races but a tough couple of weekends

has ended his points. We were at the top of our performance and we did

not quite have it in us but a massive credit to everybody involved

because they are punching above their weight. We need excellence.

Max Chilton is no stranger to Silverstone but says starting his

first home Grand Prix is a green -- dream come true. Just to have

everyone there, you are not focusing on the crowd but you catch a glimpse

of the union Jack and that spurs you on. I cannot wait.Fantastic to be

at the home Grand Prix. Back to those tyres, everybody is talking

about that. People are in an informed place to make these

decisions and that makes at the right decision. Christian, we are

talking about the tyres, the penalty and you don't believe the penalty

fits the crime? Well, they were found to have broken the rules and

the penalty was soft at the end of the day that it is done and dealt

with and we must move on. They say that they learned nothing from the

test, can you believe that? Every time in Formula one, you know you

learn something. Especially with drivers. That was very clear. You

learn something whether it is reliability or performance but it is

done, the tribunal, all the evidence was presented and we have to accept

that. Mark Webber, a great companion. And a great supporter for

Sebastian Vettel. You will listen? Of course, he has been a big member

of this team for seven years. his victories have, with our car is

and he has had 30 podiums. He has made a big contribution. We just

wish in the very best of luck. us in on some insight. They will

It is going to start that merry-go-round of who goes where

already. It is nice to see Christian enjoying the limelight and talking

about something different than the tire issues. There looking again --

good again for this Championship. We have all down to Williams. In

Canada, we were given the treat of Bottas coming third in qualifying. A

star of the huge? We think so. Here Bottas. -- Valtteri Bottas. It is

beautiful and tranquil, but I am When I found I was coming to your

hometown, I thought it would be tranquil countryside. This is my

idea of hell. There was some countryside on the way here. This is

a local team. They are really good players. Some of them get upgraded

to the National Hockey League in America.

Is this all for me to wear? How can you fit so much stuff on? Easy.What

are these? Gloves. Normally you can punch with them. This is the most

interesting piece of kit. As the only girl on the team... You might

want to borrow that as well for extra protection.

Oh, my God. OK, so, in ice hockey, we use a park. It can fly up to 100

mph. You have got to learn how to control it. We will do a slap shot

top drivers across all sections of motorsport? It is a motorsport

country. The people love it. The level of go-karting is high.

Competition from a young age is a very good. It might be because of

the mentality. We are quite calm in show. How nice was it to get the

third position in Canada? Really cool. It was a good motivation for

the team. It was a reminder why we are there. It feels good to get a

good result. Did you expect more on this Sunday? Looking back, there was

no way we could score points. It was great to have some good fights. I

had a good one with Alonso, Sutil and Raikkonen. You know they are not

going to do any see things. The racing was nice and close. -- any

look good? He was good. He could score. He scored a couple of nice

goals. No end to this guy but my talent, it seems. -- this guy 's

talent. How dedicated do you have to be? In Abu Dhabi, I saw you out

jogging in the heat. If you want to be the best, you have to give more

so happy I am alive! I tell you what, she is braver than

I am! A real ice queen. How are your bruises? They are still there,

actually. After two weeks, I am still in pain. I thought I was

better than I was. My ambition was greater than my talent. Good sport.

She is the new ice queen. Now, Bottas, talking of ice kings, should

we say, a star of the future. He really excelled in Canada. Not

during the race, because the conditions did not suit the car, but

potential, David? The reason they get to Formula One is because they

have a good career in the lower formula. He has been coached by

Mercedes-Benz. He has got some good advisers there. At Williams, they

are having a difficult run, but nonetheless he is doing a good job.

They are so calm. He made reference to that. The thing about coming to

Williams at the moment, they are not expecting so much at the moment in

terms of results. That gives him less pressure. He is learning so

much choice. He is able to get around and see how to make this car

better. When he is winning he will look back at his time at Williams

and say, I learned so much. Another former Rocky that is doing

to clearly well is Paul di Resta. -- former Rocky.

What are your hopes going into this qualifying session? Two or three is

what we need to go out and achieve. We lost a bit of speed this

morning. There were some issues. We will look to try and improve. It is

going to be mighty close. Toro Rosso are on top of their game. For us, it

is going to take an exceptional lap. Good conditions, hopefully, and

we can progress. Is there any time in the crowd for

you? Nigel Mansell said he would get half a second from the people in the

stands. You may say that if you do a good one. I will be out there doing

what I always do, which is giving 100% to help qualify.

He has certainly been giving it 100% all season. This is really what he

needs, isn't it, David? As he said, the team is punching above its

weight. He has got a real opportunity to be the next man to

step into what are established, winning teams. If CM pressing you?

Hugely. -- is he impressing you?To stay where he is was the best

decision. He can now look at where this team is able to go. If it can

go to the levels he expects it to go, he is in the perfect condition.

He could be in line for the... he be top Brit? Are unlikely, with

It has been 50 years since Jim Clark took his first Silverstone Grand

Prix victory. Recently, David got to racing books. They focus on the

heroes of my father 's childhood. Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, two of

the Scottish legends. My father had an autograph of Jim. What we have

here is the car that more than any other cemented the legend that was

looking after three cars. Mechanics covered the whole of the car. They

had to do practically everything. He worked all night at all the

circuits. You were condition that you had to work. -- you were

conditioned. It was revolutionary. In its day, it was head and

shoulders above the opposition. There had not been a car built like

that before. Through the history of Formula One,

there have always been cars that were game changes. This was one of

those. Prior to this, cars were made out of tubal frame. By using

aluminium, and putting the fuel cells on either side of the driver,

it was good for packaging, the car was smaller, and more nimble,

faster. Jim? He was one of the best. You

could give you a shopping trolley and he could drive it quickly.

life out of me but it is fantastic. I could never imagine I could be so

excited! I am going through and you know the great images of driving,

very much like this, and it makes sense because that is the feedback.

In the modern car, there is so much load through the steering, you

cannot handle those movements because you don't have that load.

You have to be quite sure with steering. You are driving at!

Absolutely, you are living at! This has been a fantastic day, a real

treat. I have to thank you for much. Not just me, all of the team for

sharing that experience. It was a legendary period. You are all

legends. This car is continuing the legend beyond our journeys on this

error and it has been a real privilege to drive. Yes. Thank you

for a good job. For a moment, I drive your heroes car and to be

flanked by those nights of the pit lane? That is what made it very

special, it is clearly very historic and wonderfully prepared but when

you are there with those mechanics of both that and worked with the

legend that is Jim Clark, they are living legends in their own right

and they have played such a very big part in the history of motor racing

and they get respect for that, that they deserve. I think he passed the

audition to play Jim Clark in the next movie! There is a celebration

of his first of three Silverstone victories at the Silverstone classic

in four weeks. Right here at Silverstone. Talking of motor sport

legends, it is the British Grand Prix and we hoped to have Murray

Walker but due to owners he could not actually be with us but we sent

a camera to him so he can explain to you why and his thoughts on this

season. I fell over in Germany. And I fractured my pelvis and I thought,

that is tough luck. And I hobbled about on crutches for a fortnight

and I had endless blood tests and as a result, they told me that I had

leukaemia, which is cancer of the blood. So that is two strikes. But

the good news is, they courted at a very early stage and the doctors are

very optimistic that I will be able to defeat it and to the extent that

being cheerful about it and I am determined to fight it will be dead.

And I will beat it. Silverstone means an enormous amount to me. I

first went in 1948 port not the British Grand Prix, the RAC Grand

Prix. And I have been to everyone at Silverstone and Brands Hatch and one

of the once at Aintree, I have been lucky to have been all these times

and have had so many wonderful experiences. We have a very mixed

bunch this year. You look at Lewis Hamilton, nobody better than him,

arguably. But you are making this difficult transition from McLaren

and he has to learn the new team and the new car and the new tyres.

Jenson Button, having lost Lewis Hamilton as his team-mate, could be

expected to do better than he has done this year and I hope things

will improve for him. Because it will be a real problem if they do

not. If ever there was a Grand Prix winner for the future, that is Paul

di Resta. Look how well he has done with Force India in a car that is

not the fastest and against the driver as he is up against. I would

say the jury is out as far as Max Chilton is concerned. I don't think

the jury has even arrived, as far as I am concerned. He has got a lot to

learn and he is going about it the right way so good luck to him and to

all of them. And very good luck to you, Murray Walker, from all of us

here at the BBC. And indeed the whole community of Formula one.

Murray Walker was talking about the British and high-level get on. What

are your thoughts this weekend? Firstly, that man, Murray Walker,

there are very few on this planet ever to be close to him in terms of

greatness, in my view. He is a legend. Let's talk about the

drivers! My guess is that Lewis Hamilton will get pole position, it

will be a fight between Red Bull and Mercedes and he is up for it. And

Paul di Resta will make eight or nine, which would be fabulous.

Jenson Button, the jury is out regarding what is going on at

McLaren and Max Chilton is learning his trade, he is doing an extreme a

competent job and he has to burn like everyone else. The thing about

Lewis Hamilton is he has been pretty upset this weekend because he feels

like he has not got the best out of his car and he said yesterday like

it feels the worst it has been all season. Is he creating his own

decoy! Listen, those inner secrets of the driver, they are never going

to let us know what is going on. Secretly, I think he has seen what

Rosberg has done and he intends to make sure that he died qualifies

him. That is the first thing they think about, where is my team-mate

going? Here is our technical analyst, Gary Anderson. Lots of

developments come here so we are interested. Let's look at Ferrari,

we can see the rear wing, early intricate. You can see they have

these vertical areas highlighted, they help the airflow going around

the car into the low pressure area created by the tyres. When they get

that working together, it works as it had a unit and creates more

downforce and more consistent downforce. They have different

versions of the car. With Grosjean, they have it much tighter around the

engine cover, more compact underneath the back. It makes the

rear wing work better. Very important to get as much downforce

as possible. Kimi Raikkonen, it is different, the double ERS system,

taking air from the front, through and out the back. The airflow gets

picked up underneath the ring. -- the wing. Inside this white circle

is a valve and that is what controls that system, they can switch that on

and off at different speeds. As for Red Bull, they are the leaders in

this isn't soft pipe technology and the airflow comes around the side.

-- exhaust pipe. This allows the high-energy exhaust gases to work

much better and cleaner on the brake doctor. And they have gone through

this little docked in front of the rear tyre, which they used in Monaco

last year, controversially. It was a whole. No, it is a slot. -- nine.

will not know until the chequered flag tomorrow. Thank you for

pointing that those things because we often don't have enough time.

Here we are at Silverstone, everybody has to respect what they

have done here years ago. This year, there is no criticism. Fantastic.

The drivers adore it and it is always a big spectacle and there are

130,000 people here during everybody on. Lydia pictures of the Ferrari

garage and Felipe Massa has had a difficult time during practice

sessions, completely missing one of them and then they are down on the

data. We have been talking about that man, Paul di Resta 's

team-mate. We are looking to see if they can both get through. This is

their best chance. They are right up there and they have a car that's

it's this kind of flowing fast corners. Both drivers are extremely

brave and capable. I would be surprised if they cannot make

somewhere in the slot between seven and ten. I do believe they can make

the final qualifying. That team certainly will, it is a shootout

between Red Bull and Mercedes, perhaps. All the talking will be

over in minutes as qualifying is about to start on this superb track.

Silverstone. One of the permanent tracks and one of the greatest

tracks on the calendar but we come to. Also some celebrities. And

footballers. They must sportsman. This is the scene, �300,000 over the

weekend expected here. My goodness, this qualification is going to be

something else! David Coulthard there are few better places to drive

a very fast car and at Silverstone. Qualifying is all about extracting

the ultimate lap time and some these corners taken at an hundred and 80

mph and over, this circuit allows the driver to express himself

completely. The home of the British Grand Prix and host of the first

ever watch average of event, Silverstone set centrally in England

's countryside and although the layout has altered over the years,

some of the track follows the former wartime base that it was with names

like Copse, Becketts and Club. And they are associated with some of the

great names of the sport. Five-time winners include Jim Clark and Alain

Prost. Ford times when Nigel Mansell. The last dish driver to

qualify in pole position was Lewis Hamilton in 2007 on his debut season

and judging by the pace of the Mercedes car is this morning, he

does have a very real chance of repeating that the Red Bull cars

were quick and he has his team-mates to worry about. The good news is,

conditions are the best we have seen and the track temperature is up to

32 degrees. This gets into that window when the tyres on at their

Pic performance and we have seen some pretty cool conditions and it

was wet yesterday and cool this morning so we have had a slightly

obscure performance based on all of those teams and as the temperature

increases, we will see a more familiar pattern. Fantastic to see

so many people. If Glastonbury is the music festival, Silverstone is

the motor sport festival. 80,000 people here yesterday, more than

that today and it is expected to host over 120,000 tomorrow. And the

busy heliport bringing people from all over the country. I'm glad to

say, they are hearing time and the pit lane will soon open up. Looking

down over that huge building, the wing, that houses the complex below

with all of those garages and then the huge hospitality area above

that. Below is where Fernando Alonso is sitting, inside the Ferrari

garage. Ferrari have had a bit of a bounce down weekend so far? --

bounce down. -- up and down. This morning, he did a handful of lap and

they have a track laboratory at the back and they discovered too much of

a particular type of metal in the oil and they decided to change the

engine, two thirds of the way through. Felipe Massa in particular

has had very little dry running and that will certainly affect his

performance in qualifying this afternoon. Fernando Alonso has had a

smooth run so far but the weight of development and what they have been

doing in terms of the set-up means the onus has very much been on him.

A quick word -- quick word on the wings, lots of cars have problems

through Becketts with this strong tailwind so something to look out

for in qualifying. Some fantastic pictures overlooking Silverstone and

watching the bounce relaxing before the session gets underway. We saw

the drivers Championship. Sebastian Vettel leaving that. And with the

constructors championship, read will lead the way. Then Ferrari and

Mercedes. Lotus were third earlier on in the season but those points

scored by Kimi Raikkonen means that challenge has been blunted? There

has been a little bit of drop-off in those results from Lotus and you

must question whether their car is bringing those upgrades that we have

seen in some of the other teams. That said, Kimi Raikkonen, he is the

man to bring that car back, even if only for a few points. As we heard,

they have some new bits on the car at the question is, when they work

as effectively as they like? Nico Hulkenberg, on-board cyber, the best

position he has had this year was 10th place in China and he had that

eighth place finish in Malaysia. The champion should we do, triple

champion Sebastian Vettel with three pole position s. Five podium

finishes. He has not missed out at all this year. Sebastian Vettel

being weighed. The driver is an integral part of the overall weight

of the car and it has to pass scrutiny. The team are constantly

using their skills and backing that up with FIA skills to get some

correlation. He likes this circuit. But here is a man who loves it.

Lewis Hamilton was fast this morning. He was second fastest to

Nico Rosberg, but it was a tiny difference. He had to back off on

what was bubbly -- probably his best lap. Straight out onto the circuit

goes Nico Hulkenberg. They have hard and medium compound tyres. It is the

medium tyre that will do most of the work. Hulkenberg has gone out on a

set of hard tyres initially. want to get up to speed. The wind

has changed direction slightly. It is better to get up to speed with

the circuit. The medium tyre is good for the first lap. It has that

advantage. If you have to do to lapse, it is a bit different. -- to

We lose six cars at the end of this. Usually the younger teams are in

that group. What kind of cut off time do you think they are going to

have to achieve to be able to get into that top 16? About one minute

and 32. Track champ at your -- temperature

is 28, slightly more than we have seen all weekend. Slightly quiet on

track at the moment. Grosjean has just gone out.

The wind is now more vague crosswind. It is like a headwind in

to turn six. There has been a slight variation in

wind there. That is something the teams will be looking at. David, the

wind was affecting them this morning in Maggots and Becketts.

Big airfield, not a lot of air around here. It is one of the

challenges of racing at Silverstone. The wind can significant change the

balance of the cars. They run really large rear end plates relative to

the actual structure that is needed. It does get quite uncomfortable for

the cars through Copse Corner. As they run down to Maggots, they are

flat out in the first part. Flat there, flat through there, and done

a couple of years through the left-hander. This is where it gets

really difficult. This will be a DRS section of track

tomorrow. They will be able to use that a little bit. No change to the

actual layout. It is the same as last year. The odd change to curves,

perhaps, but basically it is the same. Hulkenberg is coming through

club corner. This is the last turn before the finish line. He sets the

initial pace. He was 14th fastest this morning. He is now coming up to

the tighter section. Lewis Hamilton just gives a wave to the crowd there

on the other side of the gate. That is good to see. It is incredible to

see at this sign of qualifying. It shows how relaxed he is with 16

minutes to go. You never know, somebody could blow an engine and

drop oil. There is all sorts of unusual events that could happen to

make it difficult for you to go through qualifying. But Lewis is in

a happy place. Good to see. He seems happier than he was

yesterday. We're watching Grosjean here. He's on board the Lotus. He

has failed to score in the last three events of the season. He

started the season initially well. But it hasn't come together for him.

He has been a winner here in a lower category at the past. -- in the

past. His nickname should be yo-yo, his performances so up and down.

This is a different type of track to Bahrain. So the stone is definitely

warming up as we go through the weekend. -- Silverstone. According

to was Gary was telling us earlier, that should be around about the mark

to get him through to the second part of qualifying. If he can do

that on his hard tyres, that would be good. He looked mighty through

Abbey. Let's just listen. You can see that track with Jenson Button

tomorrow. Not the fastest car out there, but is early able to run

through Abbey. Then through this tricky section. This is all taken

flat. This is one of the trickiest corners as you come down to the

clubhouse on the right-hand side. Some of the greats of the past of

you from there. It is hurry up and wait three apex. And then -- it is

hurry up and wait through the apex. And then it is another take a breath

corner. Down one gear. Impressive. It is fantastic to watch. Here's

another one. Listen. We are going to watch the overhead.

This is the sequence of corners. They are going in at 185 mph. Perez

had a difficult morning session. He had a tyre ago on him. He came back

into the pits with lots of bits of rubber battering the bodywork. The

tyre had got cut. They think it was caused either by debris or a curve.

That is what Pirelli were saying at the end of analysing the tyre.

They have actually dropped and lowered the curves. It gives a hefty

vibration if you run onto it. At the back, it is often the case that the

driver drops a tyre over there. It tends to be a bit unfinished. So

it's possible the damage came from that.

Hulkenberg and Raikkonen are in the kind of ballpark that Gary said he

thinks they will need. Paul di Resta is going on to his quick lap now. We

will be able to watching getting into that kind of ballpark. Grosjean

and Raikkonen are running different set-ups and yet they are within a

couple of tenths of each other. Normally not big differences between

the cars here. You have a trade-off. There is

significant areas here where you can pull back the lap times. It is not

unusual to see difference set-ups between drivers. Somewhere like

Monte Carlo, you would converge more onto what would be the best

mechanical set-up. It is just mighty there. Fantastic. You can't believe

a car can go through that corner at that kind of speed. For the guys out

there, they are getting the full force of a formal one car at Copse.

This is one of the best places to watch a Formula One car anywhere in

the world. Two or three times slower than the

fastest car. But an impressive start to the lap. Let's just see how Paula

is able to finish this lap time. -- Paul.

Second place at the moment for Paul di Resta. He splits the two Lotus

cars. Let's just see, this was Grosjean one moment ago. He already

had set a lap time. That is common with the Lotus. We have seen that at

the contracts this year. -- at some tracks.

They have a wooden plank, as it is affectionately known, and in that

they have these measuring inserts made out of some hard metal. I don't

even pretend to know the name. That tends to be what you get the

sparking from. Two legends of different sports there. Jen Luca

Bialik? I'm showing my knowledge of and used all of the curve stop --

curve. Early on the gas. Down into the braking. A short shift into

third. And he goes fastest. Look at that. Hamilton is looking as though

he is on a good lap. Grosjean improved his time in a moment ago.

He is still set -- second. They are reporting on the radio that he has

problems with the back end of the car being unstable after breaking.

That is something the team are going to have to think about. Hamilton

goes fastest outright. That is going to give him a good boost of

confidence in this part of qualifying. That was half a second

quicker than they achieved this morning. Last year, it was wet. Pole

position was difficult. A year later, I wonder if we are getting

down to that kind of level. The track is going to get quicker,

frankly. Both Mercedes have gone out on the

medium tyre rather than the hard compound tyre, which is what

everybody else has run until this point. A slightly different

strategy. We are looking at Fernando Alonso now. That is him cutting the

inside of the curve. That will have cost him time down my gets an Hangar

Straight. -- down Maggots. Not a particularly strong lad here.

Mercedes Mayfield... There you go. He is heading for the pit. Mercedes

may feel there is no point running the prime tyre. Let's watch this. It

is the last part of Becketts. Watch him on the right. A massive

oversteer at 150 mph. He cut it way too much there and paid the price.

him time. We saw a lot of people in trouble at that corner this morning.

It does look as though things are a bit easier.

The cars get unsettled at that speed if you cut beyond the curve. Whether

it that is -- that is... It is an unusual line to be on. Adrian Sutil,

for the team that is based just over the road. They can walk you from the

factory if they wanted. The best he has qualified here is just outside

the top ten. His porn mags, Paul di Resta, getting well out of his way.

Using the hard compound tyre. Currently, di Resta is seventh. He

is heading back to the pit lane. Let's see what kind of time Sutil

does here. Is he going to be challenging into the top ten? He

should be in there. He goes forth. -- into fourth. That should see him

safe. We have got six minutes of this first part of qualifying. Who

is in the danger zone? You can see the numbers on the graphic. I don't

think that is going to last for long. You are riding with Mark

Webber. As we have seen, they come out quite late in a session. Didn't

sound like he shifted down there. So, saving seventh gear through

Copse. Struggling to read that. Oh, corner. Heavy braking. Into second

gear. Very early change-up. I noticed that this morning as well.

That puts them into third place. Behind both Mercedes car is. --

cars. They will not be disappointed with that and he never had to work

his wheel around that lap. Nice, steady, well within the balance of

the car. More to come from that Red Bull. His team-mate, Sebastian

Vettel, comes around. That will put him safely within the top ten.

Jenson Button is in the drop so because he has not done any lap yet.

His first sector was quite slow. Red Bull, evenly matched. Interesting to

see which one comes out on top. Sebastian Vettel has had the edge in

qualifying. But this is a circuit that Mark Webber loves. Just a quick

of date or Ferrari. The mechanics are working away on this car. He

said this morning that he was not happy with the balance. I know that

moment he had through their gets was deciding his position but it would

appear he is still not happy with the balance. -- Becketts. Thank you.

Fernando Alonso, pole position here last year. Wet and dry positions --

conditions. That session was delayed by the rain. TEAM RADIO: one more

time, Sebastian. They perhaps feel that is not enough. I would have

thought he was very safe, where he is at the moment. The benchmark of

the Burmaster that must be more encouraging for McLaren. That

compares with the fastest, that is not too bad, I would have thought.

On-board with Pastor Maldonado. Venezuelan driving for Williams, who

are celebrating 600 Grand Prix is over the course of this weekend.

Quite an amazing mark. C where he can come. 14th at the moment, ahead

of his team-mate but only just safe in that top 16. Hulkenberg, he has

just improved, eighth place. He has dragged himself out of danger.

Jenson Button finally does a lap. Almost exactly one second off the

pace of Lewis Hamilton. Bottom also using the medium compound. --

autumn. -- Jenson Button. That is an impressive gap, it will probably

reduce during race time but a depressing sight for Jenson Button.

Kimi Raikkonen has come up to third place so Lotus are showing great

form, here. Kimi Raikkonen has used the medium compound and Grosjean has

stayed on the hard compound. And they have done virtually the same

lap time which might imply that Grosjean is the quicker of the two

cars. Felipe Massa, he has had a tough time. He needs to keep it

clean this afternoon. He just constantly seems to be in the shadow

of Fernando Alonso, which is no shame when you consider how good he

is. Felipe Massa has got good speed but he seems to be the one that gets

tangled up in those little incidents. He is going on to one lap

nine. He is on the softer tyres. slow that corner is. Not much

finesse on that throttle. Whether that is just a function of the

amount of grip when they fire up the exhaust. Just overly tight with that

and to aggressive behind the wheel. We will find out in time. This is

the old start finish line. Towards Copse. This appears out of you. And

reappears once again. And Felipe Massa, trying to move himself out of

what is the drop son. We have got Valtteri Bottas, Felipe Massa,

hoping to improve, Charles Pic, Max Chilton. And Giedo van der Garde, he

is on the track at the moment, Felipe Massa is not where he needs

to be. He should be safe. Alonso is one second down at the moment on

Lewis Hamilton. If I am doing my mathematics properly. It does not

look and courage in in terms of Ferrari? C what he can do as he goes

across the line. 14th, he just displaces Fernando Alonso. Almost

put him in trouble but I don't think anyone will challenge. But what can

Valtteri Bottas do? Again, Valtteri Bottas I'd qualifies Pastor

Maldonado. No, he doesn't. Pastor Maldonado is still on one lap. Thank

back. Very tight times. And Pastor Maldonado has made it through into

the next part of qualifying. Valtteri Bottas has failed. Giedo

van der Garde has gone through. Charles Pic has died qualified Jules

Bianchi. Valtteri Bottas and Gutierrez have been dropped and both

rookies. We know how quick Valtteri Bottas can be windy conditions are

changeable but that just shows that Williams are not fast enough in the

current guys and they are still struggling. So, the driver at have

been knocked out of macro Valtteri Bottas, Gutierrez, Charles Pic,

Jules Bianchi, Van der Garde and Max Chilton. TEAM RADIO: unfortunately,

in Canada. Valtteri Bottas he was all smiles. Not at Silverstone, the

the more serious business and the top ten. We will drop six more

drivers. And the lap times are coming in pretty fast. Gary, the

track seems to be getting... TEAM RADIO: there is still time to gain

on the last corner, getting more on the exit. The track seems to be

getting quicker? The temperatures, yes. The higher the temperature,

with these medium tyres, the better, and the quicker you can get

those tyres working. In the morning it took one or two laps to get them

going and now it is only one lap. The times and we saw in the first

session and looking at your car collisions, what do we have to do to

get into that top ten? It will have to be low that the one, or 31.2 or

31.3. -- low 31. You have to be lively on this one, you have to do

the run and be ready for the next one. Once again, we saw Mercedes

just using those softer tyres, and other teams, the top teams, tend to

use the harder tyre and Felipe Massa went on to medium. That is a mix?

Yes, it is difficult. I think for Mercedes, they feel that harder

tyres by the best race tyres and they want to save as many as

possible and using this medium tyres for one love, that was good and they

can use that same set of tyres for this session and the back the right

schedule. We will see what happens, Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton targeting

pole position today. Trying to out qualify one another. Nico Rosberg

has had three pole positions this year. Lewis Hamilton has had plenty

of front row starts at pole position here would mean so much to him. And

of course, Red Bull, we know how strong they have been here. Both

Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel. They are very capable of taking pole

position but their first target is to get into that top ten. That is

what matters. Mark Webber is currently on the circuit on a used

said those compound tyres. This is more of a sighting than an attempt

to set any ultimate pace? They might have made slight adjustments or some

other electronic adjustments available to the drivers within the

through the turns. The best lap is usually the last lap. That is where

maximum rubber is on the surface. What a successful team this is, Red

Bull. I was up late last night with some charity auction winners. They

were still here working. They did not seem to have a panic on. But it

shows the level of dedication of the boys here working. I'd didn't see so

many other seen as Micro senior team personnel here. -- I didn't see so

many other senior team personnel engine. So he does go for a down

change. If you are in seventh, you don't really accelerate on the exit

to Becketts. If you go to six, you will accelerate but you also slow

the car down at the apex of the turn. It is about levels of

confidence and the performance of the car. Massa 's split times are

not showing anything exceptional. Rosberg is going quickly as we

speak. Webber is still faster than the moment. Triano, the young

Australian, is hoping he gets to take over from the old Australia. --

He is fastest on a used set of tyres. That is impressive. Webber is

now second. Let's see what Alonso does through the tight section that

completes the lab. -- the lap. So, that coincides with what Harry was

saying. Hamilton has just done a 1: 31.2. Again, that was on a used set

of tyres. They may have done enough. They may not need to come back out.

That could be a gamble. The track is continuing to improve.

8.5 minutes of this second part of qualifying to go here. We're

watching Adrian Sutil in the Force India. He is fifth. Let's see

whether this lap is going to be an improvement. It is. He goes into

fourth. Force in the are showing their cars have outright speed. He

is a former winner of the British comprehensive. One of his most

amazing wins was here in the wet in We will be out to get the words of

one world champion on another 's car. You were excited about driving

the 1988 car, won't you? -- weren't you? It was fantastic.

In the drop zone for the top ten, Hamilton, Raikkonen and Hulkenberg.

Raikkonen is coming around to the latter part of the lap. This is a

used set of the medium compound tyre. Grosjean did his work on the

hard compound tyre. So, again, a good work by McLaren. On board with

Jenson Button. He is about to come played his first flying lap. He is

on a used set of the softer tyre, Crosses the line. He is only 11. No

doubt he is going to be coming back Interesting, that rear shot from

McLaren. You can see the head restraint around Button 's helmet.

They are located where the driver 's hands are, with a couple of pins so

they can even move quickly. Doesn't look like it is fitting as well as

it might normally do. Perez just coming out. He has outqualified

Jenson Button at the last three events, but he has missed Q3 several

times this year. He had a punctured tyre. It has not been a particularly

good start to the day for Perez. is interesting that the two Lotus

cars have gone a bit slower than in the first one. Mercedes from both

those guys managed to go faster. -- Mercedes, both those guys managed to

go faster. They think they are safe. We think

so, too. Felipe Massa told Rob earlier in the session that he had

some graining on the tyres. They were both looking at an

overlay. They will be looking to see where he can improve. Rob, his

engineer, is looking through with him.

It is interesting from Sebastian Vettel. He is on the softer tyre.

Can he get the Red Bull onto a similar kind of pace? So early on

the throttle at the apex. Massa seemed very aggressive on the power.

He is up on the split time. Looking good so far. A long apex of there.

Out of Luffield. Down to was Copse Corner, the commitment corner. --

two wards. They make it look so easy. But the speed they carry

through this section is unbelievable. Using a bit of curve,

but not as much as Alonzo did earlier. Nice and tidy all the way

through the corner. He's having a tidy lap here. He's a tent or so

down. -- a 10th. As we said with Mark Webber earlier,

not much work going on with the steering wheel. The car is tracking

closed between Red Bull and Mercedes. The battle for pole

position will become those for cars. He had a feeling that Mercedes have

something up their sleeve. Button is currently they're in 12th. 14th only

for Maldonado. It is not going to be enough. Grosjean is seventh fastest.

out in Canada. It keeps him in the frame to replace Mark Webber at Red

Bull. What is he going to do? We are going to be watching him closely.

Watch and listen. Impressive through Becketts.

cost him all the way down Hangar Straight. I think he will have lost

some time there. This is going to be tight for him.

On such tiny moments or potatoes last. -- on such tiny moments,

reputations are lost. He is running out of time and running out of

tyres. Ricciardo is in the top ten. Prince Michael of Kent there, with

Williams celebrating their record question is, can Jenson Button get

into the top ten? Both McLarens are there at this stage. Ricciardo has

do something. He is only ninth. He could be squeezed out.

Those are personal best sectors. Ricciardo was purple in the second

sector, which tells us he is fastest of all in this session.

I am not sure he is safe yet. Di Resta goes fifth, behind Hamilton.

Button is in 10th place. He pushes Jean-Eric Vergne out. Alonso is in a

bit of danger himself. He has been pushed down to eighth. Williams will

not have a car in the top ten here today. Hulkenberg has improved, but

again he has not done enough. Alonso is through. Raikkonen has improved.

Matter is a danger. Button has been pushed down. Ashraf Massa is a

danger. He is out! He has failed to make it out of the top ten. Alonso

has only just scraped through, and at a time when Ferrari need to be

keeping the pressure on Red Bull, it has not happened that way.

He was starting to find form when it comes down to it.

Very close times at the end there. You can see the two Lotus cars. They

did virtually the same lap time. But after failing to score with both

cars last time in Canada, the big story at the British Grand Prix,

sadly, is that neither McLaren has made the top ten. A bit of personnel

satisfaction in that Jenson is in front of his team-mate.

Jean-Eric Vergne, Perez, Hulkenberg perhaps Perez was punished for the

lack of track time. But the car is not good enough today? More of the

same. Very sad for those people, like myself, who are fans of McLaren

and we do not want to see this happening. But we must face reality

and it is a very poor car at the moment and the drivers are not being

given a chance to get themselves into final qualifying. Daniel

Ricciardo desperately trying to get into the sunshine, there is one Seat

going. Jean-Eric Vergne trying to get through and unfortunately it did

not work. With this incident... John Arlotte Fern was the star over the

last couple of races and he did so well. Now it is a turn of Daniel

Ricciardo. He came into the sport as a huge star and he will be groomed.

-- Jean-Eric Vergne. They have made strange decisions. I think it is too

early to say who will get this, all sorts of names are going around and

we try to get it out of Christian today and he was quiet. I think the

important thing is, if Ricciardo could qualify anywhere close to

where he is in the real race, to actually race at this level, that

would be a great indicator to see how good he will be. It would be a

headline. Let's talk about Valtteri Bottas, in Canada he took third

place. This is the on-board shot. Let us be clear, his car is not

great. We have spoken to Claire Williams. She is involved in an

Executive role in this car is not was your team-mate? Yes, he had the

better lap in the end and I was struggling with the balance of the

car. Especially with the medium tyres. Yes, if you could go back,

you could always do things better but that was it. This is our pace at

the moment. It is a tough race tomorrow? It will not be easy.If

the conditions are stable, I think with the strategy as well, it is

difficult to make a big difference here because for me, I cannot get

too much of the difference on the medium or hard compounds. It will

not be easy but we will do our best. He just has to keep his chin up?

still has to prove himself? He is on a learning curve, he is a surprise

choice, and he has taken over from Bruno Senna and I think he is doing

a very good job. He is doing his best to drag the team and any

drivers to be on their side and everybody marking in together to

make sure that the team works. I think he is a perfect team player.

You felt he was a surprise choice? I think. -- I do think so. He was

there as a tester raster, and that is the way things happen. They could

have gone for a bigger name or a more experienced driver but they are

going for somebody like Valtteri Bottas, who can be a champion in the

future and Williams have the history of doing this. Felipe Massa did not

have much track time at all and perhaps that is the reason why he

has not managed to get through? is more of Monaco, just one thing

after another. And when things start to go bad, it just catapults.

Ferrari this weekend are yet to prove themselves. Fernando Alonso,

not looking very comfortable? And Kimi Raikkonen and Lotus were not

looking hot? That is right, there is more pace to be fired from Lotus and

that has been their weakness in terms of the I qualifying pace.

is the story for Ferrari and Lotus, they race well but do not qualify as

well as they need to. That might not be bad when you have to manage the

tyres and those different challenges around the circuit. Those cooler

conditions relative to other tracks. They may not be able to make the

comeback they have made in other races. But there is plenty of action

upfront. Paul di Resta and Adrian Sutil showing well for Force India,

Adrian Sutil showing very well in that last sequence, with the fourth

fastest time. And Mercedes are definitely shooting for pole

position here. Nico Rosberg quietly assessing his chances. I wonder if

the fourth pole position of the season would be possible? That would

be something. All of those faces of the team on the helmet of Sebastian

Silverstone is underway and the temperature on the track is 28

degrees, so consistent conditions. Felipe Massa not making top ten and

Fernando Alonso not as quick as we would have expected? It was a pretty

good lap, so there is nothing in the back pocket to take out for Fernando

Alonso, and the car is not look back at has a performance I would have

expected. Are we expecting Red Bull and Mercedes to contest the top?

read will have enough speed? -- Red Bull. Mercedes have only used one

set of tyres to get to where they are. It is the battle with both Red

Bull cars running the new set of the medium tyres so it will be

interesting to see who can do what. I think Mercedes have still got it.

will it be? Nico Rosberg or Lewis Hamilton? Nico Rosberg 's father

took a very famous pole position here at Silverstone, 106 two miles

per hour. And that was 28 years ago. Just after Nico Rosberg was born. He

celebrated his birthday coming into this weekend. That was a very famous

lap and people still talk about that. I wish I had been on the

sidelines to see that. He was one of the most brave and committed

qualifiers. And Nico Rosberg has the chance to edit those exploits but

Ferrari, we are keeping an eye on them? We want to see if they can

unleash something as this track defaults. That is one of the great

things about the fan base that turn up to Silverstone, they spread the

love amongst all of the teams, even those who don't stand any chance of

getting onto the podium this weekend. Ferrari have 15 pole

position 's in Britain, more than any other team and they have more

wins over the years. I do not think that will be repeated today. We will

have two wait and see. She was looking timid when she was caught on

camera. To establish himself as one of the top drivers, Nico Rosberg has

really done at? He was not given credit for his I tried speed and

people thought it was the magic carpet on the way through the lower

ranks and then starting with Williams when they were not really

doing a particularly strong job as a team, but his fastest lap at his

first-ever Grand Prix in Bahrain and since then he has been looking for

those big opportunities and quietly learning. Showing Michael Schumacher

just how fast it was over one single lap and they were evenly matched on

race pace. But he had the upper hand and Lewis Hamilton has been giving

him full respect. Those qualifying tallies. 4-3 in favour of Lewis

Hamilton. But Nico Rosberg got that victory in Monaco. Lewis Hamilton

yet to achieve victory for this team but it is still relatively early

days. Nico Rosberg knows it very well. Everything is looking good on

this lap. This is a flying lap from him and the sector times,

interestingly, Hamilton has gone quicker than Rosberg in that first

sect or. The opening lap, Ricciardo is the fastest out there. For tenths

slower than he managed in his previous best. He was on a used set.

Nico Rosberg, to the end of the lap. Webber goes fastest. Setting the

pace for this initial group. Rosberg. That is very rapid and Ian!

That is faster than Webber. He took pole position a couple of years ago

but Hamilton is going even faster! In both first and second sectors.

in 2010. 1: 29.6. We are nearly there, but not quite. But Hamilton

is showing Rosberg a clean pair of heels on that first run. An

impressive first attempt. We will see if they go again. Not want a

ready smile too much! Analysing what was going on. And the quiet before

the storm in the Lotus garage. They have used more tyres throughout the

course of this qualifying today perhaps will only get one run at it.

He is on the harder others compound tyres. He has done 1: 31.3. It will

be interesting to see what he chooses to run on. They will have

two start the race on their fastest qualifying tyres. And they might

take a slightly different approach, they have to use both tyres during

the Grand Prix. It is follow that. That is an interesting point because

last year it was dry for the race but it was wet for qualifying and

they have the option of which tyre to use and Fernando Alonso started

on the harder tyre and Webber on the soft and Webber had the advantage by

doing that. Usually, you won't have that choice. But every time you do

have fuel spills and things like that. Everybody is in the pits and

no Jenson Button did not make top ten, he is the best of the rest so

he will be the first driver to have the ability to choose what tyre to

start on. And he will be on the clean side so Jenson Button starting

outside top-10 but perhaps you will have the chance to score some points

tomorrow but we are watching the build-up to the final battle in that

top-10 contest. Kimi Raikkonen has yet to set a lap and he will only

get one chance to do that. He is the first one out, being chased by

Daniel Ricciardo. I think it was. Paul di Resta is also on his way

out. It is such an advantage when you have a couple of sets of tyres

to use because the drivers just get that little bit more feel? And does

not get any better than this in driving terms. A new set of tyres

going out on a circuit like Sobers Don, which is high-speed, and you

just take the ultimate high-speed journey. -- Silverstone. He sits on

top and he would love to be on pole position at the British Grand Prix

again. It would be amazing. Stirling Moss achieved that honour back in

the days when they alternated between Silverstone and injury and

Stirling Moss achieved that and got pole position and went on to take

victory and they had a great feature a couple of weeks back. I wonder if

Lewis Hamilton will be able to emulate that great man? Only 1.5

minutes to go. Do not discount the Australian. Pole position a couple

of years ago. He knows what it takes. He has won here in most

categories he has ever raised. It was the first track he drove on when

he travelled from Australia to begin his European career. He knows this

is his last qualifying attempt at Silverstone in Formula one. And I

can relate to that. You just want to feel you have left nothing on the

table. You have taken every opportunity. Kimi Raikkonen is the

first to go. He was the first out of the pits. We shall see if he can get

anywhere near the first couple of rows. He needs to be on the third

row to have any chance in this race. I don't think he has a car that will

qualify in the front two rows but on the third row, maybe he has a

chance? Tidy enough onto that Wellington straight. Let us see his

first sector. Little bit slower than Paul di Resta. As we can see Kimi

Raikkonen, on board with Mark Webber. Into Brooklands. Immediately

quicker. But by much. But every little bit helps. Very wide on the

entry. Trying to get the car as straight as possible. Across the old

start - finish straight. The chequered flag is odd. Red Bull

looking for their 50th pole position. They have racked up a lot

of pole positions in a short amount of time, but Hamilton has just gone

fastest. Mark Webber was quick in the first sector as well. Vettel,

not a good first sector. He is down on Hamilton and Webber. Mark Webber

is going the fastest of the Red Bull cars. Through into the last corner.

Mark Webber has not outqualified Vettel at all this year. But he does

love Silverstone. Hamilton is going fast, faster than anybody else, in

the fast -- first and now the second sector. Rosberg comes across the

line. He goes fastest for the moment. He is quicker than Webber.

Hamilton has surely got a bit more in hand. He has done it! Look at the

lap time! I don't think Vettel has got an answer. Let's just check. No

way he can do it. He qualifies in third place. Lewis Hamilton has

indeed repeated the performance of Sir Stirling Moss to take pole

position in the Silver Arrow at the British Grand Prix. It is his second

pole position of the season. What an important one for him. It is the

fifth pole position for that team this year. Again, all of the poles

have been retained between Mercedes and Red Bull. But it is a Mercedes

12. -- a Mercedes 1-2. It is an all red Bull second row. Paul di Resta

was fifth. Storming job, Lewis, storming job. Simple enough. It was.

What a margin, David. Brilliant qualifying. We saw him out waving at

the beginning. We know that Lewis, in a happy place, is an incredibly

quick racing driver. He has obviously build his confidence

during the practice seconds and delivered for the home fans. A great

performance from di Resta. Just an update on Alonso - he did get onto

the auction tyre. Ferrari are just struggling for pace. He has ended up

in 10th. That is a shock. The Lotus cars have been outqualified not only

by Force Indias but by Toro Rosso. That is a fascinating top ten. Sutil

Hamilton. He has taken his 28th career pole position. He has done it

career pole position. He has done it on home turf. SUZI PERRY: And what a

result for the fans. They were loving that. This is a perfect day

for British motorsport fans. Not just Lewis on pole, at Paul di Resta

in fifth. What a result for him. Absolutely. We thought it would be a

shootout between the Mercedes team. It was fantastic for them. The fans

will be happy because they like the fight with Vettel but they are not

big fans of Vettel. That was a surprise because we thought you

might get up to seventh or eighth. He has been looking good all

weekend. We saw the fans cheering and looking pleased that one of

their heroes is in pole position for his home Grand Prix. Rightly so.

What an exciting session that was, Eddie.

That is what I love about quote -- current qualifying. It really works.

You never know until about a minute after the flag has dropped. That is

the best thing. They have timing to perfection. They know when to get

the maximum out of the car. Some people do one run. Some people do

two runs. It is a fabulous programme. I love the format. He

doesn't look happy, does he? But his man, Lewis Hamilton, he is gay to

have a big fight tomorrow. Sebastian Vettel is very

competitive. They have done so well here. Three out of four years

winning, and on the fourth year they were on the podium. Definitely,

Sebastian Vettel is always looking for the win.

You can see the happiness there. People questioned the logic of Lewis

leaving McLaren. Maybe he knew something that we didn't know. But

he left at the right time. We often talk about the unified except. --

the dignified accent. I do moment, Lewis is in a -- at the moment,

Lewis is in a good place. What a stunning lap from Lewis

Hamilton. It was. Conditions eased back a bit.

But it was an impressive lap. his most impressive lap of the

season so far? Probably, yes. He always said it would take time to

settle in. He was a little unsettled. That may be because of

blustery conditions. He understood that everybody was having

difficulties yesterday. He worked away overnight and got the car where

he wanted it. We are standing in fairly balmy conditions. The wind

seems to have dropped. Did that help you in Q3? It did. It should have

helped everyone. But the reason we had the capacity for the lap was the

calmer conditions. What can we expect from you guys tomorrow?

Grand Prix. What a treat. His decoy didn't work. We thought he was

playing a game with us, daring us. He was saying he wasn't sure he

would make it. But he did it with such a resounding style and panache.

He just made it his. Anybody who came close he destroyed them. It was

a fantastic performance. Let's hear from Christian Horner now talking

about his Red Bull boys. You have locked out the second row

of the grid. Disappointing? We could see this morning that the Mercedes

were quick. Congratulations to Lewis. It was a big lap at the end.

Our guys, to get both of them on the second row is a good place to start

the Grand Prix. Hopefully we can take it today and tomorrow.

season, they have been quick. We hope we can take it to them in the

Grand Prix tomorrow, though. How do you see tyre wear?

It is going to be critical. It is going to be warmer tomorrow, which

is nice. But, yeah, the strategy, tyre wear, the front left, left

rear, let's stand -- left side of the car takes a hammering. Hopefully

we will be in reasonable shape. Tyre wear is critical, as always.

They have got something up their sleeve, haven't they? In a race

condition, they have it all planned out. It will be hard to eat Red Bull

in a race situation. Nevertheless, Mercedes are creeping up there,

aren't they? They are easing their way in. Christian Horner has been

quite vocal about the penalty for Mercedes. Now you can see why. He

believes Mercedes have made a big step because of the testing. Leaving

that aside, we are in for a big battle. We might be in for a classic

race here tomorrow. Those four drivers, and Paul di Resta right on

their tail, Italy Titanic. -- it could be Titanic. Jenson

didn't quite make it through. But we can hear from him now. It was so

close to you still being out there, but ultimately no McLaren in Q3.

In a way, it is quite surprising with the way the car felt. It felt

reasonably good. It was difficult to get the tyres working correctly in

terms of temperature. Paul di Resta was able to go slow and we have to

go hard. It is not great but it is a little less bad, is the right way to

say it. If we had qualified in Q3 I think we would have been beaten

anyway. We can choose what tyres we want to use. It is not so bad. I

enjoyed driving the car out there. I think we are just dragging a lot. We

are just not efficient, maybe. The car felt reasonably good.

What a shame. He thought he was going to make it to Q3. There was

every reason for him to be positive about where he was going to go.

Still, the body language is not right. He is not bubbling, not

excited. He did say that he enjoys driving a car, and that was the

opposite of what he said in Canada. Let's hope they have made some

progress there. Let's hear from the top three now.

Lewis, a great lap at the end there. How good does it feel?

It is incredible. It is just like it was in 2007. Just to see the crowd

here today, it is fantastic, such a great turnout for everyone. That was

a lap for them. I hope tomorrow we can do something special for them.

This was really down to the team. They have been doing a phenomenal

job, improving the car constantly. I have not been feeling 100%

comfortable in the car all weekend, so I was happy to get a lap.

Your thoughts on qualifying? It is definitely a great feeling to

go into qualifying and having such a car. It is really cool. It was a

great job that the team has done to get us to where we are now. We are

also improving on Sundays, hopefully, and hoping we have

improved. Tomorrow should be better. I'm sure there will be teams

who I bit stronger than us, but maybe starting front is going be a

help. There seemed to be some different

tactics at late tomorrow -- at late tomorrow with your tyres. This is a

tactical weekend, clearly. We will see what happens tomorrow.

It is a long race. But we are happy today. Either Lewis found a shortcut

or he has something special around here. It was not in reach today. I

was happy with the lap at the end. It was close with Mark as well. We

did what we could for the team. It is always nice to position well in

qualifying. Qualifying here is good fun. I am enjoying the high-speed

corners. Looking forward to tomorrow, for the race. We will see

how we are with tyres, looking after them. For now, happy for the team.

It is a good position to start from. Obviously, our factory is close to

this track. Milton Keynes is not far away. Looking forward to tomorrow.

Oh, I am looking forward to tomorrow as well. David is joining us now

This circuit involves so much. It is possible he just was not in the zone

yesterday. Today commit he has gained in confidence. We didn't get

much chance to see this lap in commentary, but just watching here

as he comes down into the opening as he comes down into the opening

here. This is down through Farm. A small correction for oversteer. A

bit of wheelspin. This is one of the DRS zones. An early turn, using the

engine braking. Look out early he turns into Luffield. Again, so early

on the power. I was waiting for a long pause, but absolute commitment

And here through Becketts. Flat through the first two parts. Down

onto Hangar Straight, he gets a chance to breathe. He is possibly

reminiscing about his previous pole position here. A bit of understeer.

He misses the apex slightly, but he gets away with it. It is where he

gets away with it. It is where he will have known. Such an amazing

track. Not so good news at the bottom of the top ten for Fernando

Alonso. Disappointing day for you? Yes, I think we were not competitive

all weekend and it is not normal to see one Ferrari out of 23. But we

were not good enough today. The race is still very long and anything can

happen and we will do our best to recover positions but it was a bad

Saturday. Ferrari have been traditionally quite strong, are the

others going forward? Well, I think we did not improve the car enough in

the last five races and we have not new parts that perhaps did not

deliver what we expected from them. Pirelli have chosen medium and hard

continuously, and we know that only helps to teams and we need to work.

Not very impressed with Pirelli? Though, that was a bit of a lap!

Those teams are clearly Red Bull and Mercedes. So, a lot of people take

credit from what he says and he is putting his little mark, we know

what you're doing, Pirelli! Not just saving yourself under tyres, but

make sure you look after Ferrari. Fernando knows that his words carry

a reasonable amount of cloud and he will have said that behind closed

doors and he has just delivered a message into the public domain. It

is a very busy weekend on the BBC and if you are tennis -- are a

Hamilton were flying the flag for British motor sport as they flew
