Glorious sunshine and scenes from an Italian paddock. Welcome back to

:01:05.:01:13.

Monza. Practice has just started but you haven't missed anything. This is

:01:13.:01:18.

one of the most important sessions. We get to see what could happen

:01:18.:01:24.

tomorrow. The time is right to get the track temperature. It is a good

:01:24.:01:28.

simulation for qualifying and the race because it is at the same time

:01:28.:01:33.

of day so they will do the longer runs on the harder tyres to begin

:01:33.:01:39.

with and then put on the softer ones. This is the session that

:01:39.:01:44.

matters for everybody. You can just hear a car on track, that is Max

:01:44.:01:51.

Chilton, just the one. Monza is beautiful, possibly one of the most

:01:51.:02:05.

scenic settings on the calendar. We can go to James

:02:05.:02:06.

scenic settings on the calendar. We McNish now.

:02:06.:02:22.

This is a majestic circuit. 3.6 miles. 11 turns. On Sunday they will

:02:22.:02:33.

do 53 laps, 75% taken at full throttle. This is the red-blooded

:02:34.:02:38.

track, all about the speed. Trees lining certain parts as well which,

:02:38.:02:44.

when it rains, makes life a bit difficult but it certainly acts adds

:02:44.:02:51.

character. It has got personality. But for me, it is Ferrari's home

:02:51.:03:03.

turf. In Italy. You feel that in the car, the grandstands are alive.

:03:03.:03:11.

Every corner has got a name, like Parabolica, and her something about

:03:11.:03:16.

it that is different to any other track.

:03:16.:03:20.

Lets not forget the McLaren won this race last year with Lewis Hamilton.

:03:20.:03:30.

This year, the opposite. Yet to get on the podium. It is a very

:03:30.:03:36.

different season for McLaren. Last week they celebrated their 50th

:03:36.:03:42.

anniversary as an entity. Bruce McLaren set up the team on the 2nd

:03:42.:03:49.

of September 1963. Quite a milestone surviving in Formula One for that

:03:49.:03:53.

long, that is an achievement in itself. McLaren are one of the storm

:03:53.:03:59.

warts of Formula One. They have been here for such a long time. -- store

:03:59.:04:10.

bought. But they seem to have found their sweet spot. The problem for

:04:10.:04:13.

bought. But they seem to have found Perez and Button is the sweet spot

:04:13.:04:18.

is not quite quick enough. I expect this to be one of their better Grand

:04:18.:04:25.

Prix. Lastly it was an emotional win for Lewis Hamilton. He was telling

:04:25.:04:31.

us last night how much pleasure he took for winning in Ferrari's

:04:31.:04:36.

backyard. Some booing from the highly partisan fans gave him even

:04:36.:04:42.

more encouragement. Hammering down the back straight, hard compound

:04:42.:04:49.

Pirelli tyres. The yellow flags are showing. Sector 13. They have now

:04:49.:04:59.

gone away. Interestingly they are running a media centre of -- running

:04:59.:05:07.

a film in the media centre of highlights. I forgot the enormous

:05:07.:05:13.

accident Kimi Reichmann had in 2007. He went piling into the

:05:13.:05:18.

barriers. He was fine but it was an absolutely enormous accident. If you

:05:18.:05:24.

go off here, it tends to be quick. Now we are on board with Adrian

:05:24.:05:26.

Sutil. A lot of forces going through the

:05:26.:05:37.

driver's body, the car and the suspension, and that is one of the

:05:37.:05:40.

characteristics of this place. High speed. It is the biggest stop of the

:05:40.:05:49.

year, from 330 kilometres an hour down to 90 kilometres an hour, 9.5

:05:49.:05:59.

G. It is a very big hit on your chest with the seat belt spoiling

:05:59.:06:04.

you. We saw this morning a lot of people having big problems. It is

:06:04.:06:10.

easy if the tyres are not up to pressure to lock a brake and with

:06:11.:06:17.

the Pirelli tyres, they are quite sensitive to that. Adrian Sutil is

:06:17.:06:25.

on a lap at the moment. The Force India cars have tended to go quite

:06:25.:06:30.

well here. It is certainly a circuit where they will be hoping to take

:06:30.:06:35.

away as many points as possible in their battle with McLaren. He was

:06:35.:06:41.

sitting in fifth place before Spa in Belgium but they have now dropped

:06:41.:06:43.

behind McLaren. 65 for McLaren and Belgium but they have now dropped

:06:43.:06:48.

61 for Force India. Joining us at Belgium but they have now dropped

:06:48.:06:54.

the pit lane is our technical expert, Gary Anderson.

:06:54.:07:02.

They have fired up Sebastian Vettel's car and I just having a

:07:02.:07:10.

look at Mark Webber's. There has been a lot of fiddling with this car

:07:11.:07:16.

in the last two minutes. Rebalancing the car. It is still on stilts. Why

:07:16.:07:27.

would they change it? The battery pack gets a lot of energy put into

:07:27.:07:34.

it and taken out that every lap. 80 horsepower 46 seconds of a lap, that

:07:34.:07:39.

is around half a second of lap time, so you cannot run out it. Sometimes

:07:39.:07:43.

the battery will not charge to its maximum. Then you pay a lap time

:07:43.:07:51.

deficit. It is better if you change it now and lose ten minutes than

:07:51.:07:55.

suffer the consequences in the whole of the session. Mark Webber always

:07:55.:08:00.

seems to get the problems in this team. It could be Ricciardo

:08:00.:08:09.

inheriting them next year. People should not be worried. Problems do

:08:09.:08:14.

occur. I don't see why a team of the stature of Red Bull would compromise

:08:14.:08:20.

one driver's performance so that is just the way things are.

:08:20.:08:25.

Noisy down in the pit lane. A couple of episodes for the Marussia going

:08:25.:08:42.

off circuit and managing to rejoin. This is Kimi Reich inning. He tries

:08:42.:08:48.

to make the corner but the problem is this thing on the inside which is

:08:48.:08:57.

very high and it kicked up the rear wheel. It is better to straighten up

:08:57.:09:04.

and abort the corner completely. It is the damage that could have gone

:09:04.:09:08.

into the suspension gearbox that is the problem. He is putting 750

:09:08.:09:14.

horsepower through it at the same time. The force on the drive shaft

:09:14.:09:20.

is colossal. Look at the Force on his head bouncing around in the

:09:20.:09:21.

cockpit. You need to use all of the curve but

:09:21.:09:32.

as you come through that, the road dips away and it is easy to barely

:09:32.:09:39.

the car. That is one of the characteristics of this, people

:09:39.:09:43.

pushing the limit as early as they can. We are ten minutes into this

:09:43.:09:49.

free practice session ahead of Sunday's Grand Prix at Monza. 43

:09:49.:09:54.

degrees track temperature, 29 the air temperature.

:09:54.:10:07.

We will see some quicker time is definitely this afternoon. Grosjean

:10:07.:10:16.

is second for Lotus. Button is third for McLaren. Perez is forth and Di

:10:16.:10:18.

Resta is fifth. Ricciardo, who we know will be

:10:18.:10:32.

replacing Mark Webber at Red Bull, is still in the Toro Rosso for the

:10:32.:10:37.

rest of the season and he is in seventh place. Maldonado is eighth,

:10:37.:10:42.

Hulkenberg ninth and Gutierrez in 10th.

:10:42.:10:50.

Alonso has just gone out on track. Webber is having his battery changed

:10:50.:10:59.

which has delayed his start to the session. Lewis Hamilton, who set the

:10:59.:11:03.

fastest time this morning in practice, is also still in the

:11:03.:11:08.

garage. Jenson Button is the fastest of all in the first sector, which is

:11:08.:11:14.

the very slow corners and accelerations, so the car is working

:11:14.:11:19.

well there, but after that in the high-speed bits he is a little bit

:11:19.:11:24.

off, so it is clear where McLaren needs to improve. Grosjean needs to

:11:24.:11:29.

turn in early year as well. No way he was going to make that curve --

:11:29.:11:36.

earlier. Quite a few mistakes already only ten minutes in. Lotus,

:11:36.:11:44.

Marussia, Raikkonen, people pushing the limits. We are also at a very

:11:44.:11:50.

high speed circuit where if you are, I don't know, one tenth of a second

:11:51.:11:56.

late, you have covered ten metres on the break, so the difference between

:11:56.:12:04.

getting it spot on and hitting your apex and not, fine margins. You do

:12:04.:12:10.

not have the downforce in the car. If you do hit it a little bit late,

:12:10.:12:16.

there has got to be a recovery process. Fernando Alonso, second

:12:16.:12:19.

fastest time this morning in the Ferrari. The Italian media is

:12:19.:12:26.

describing this as a must win race for this team. Alonso is trailing

:12:26.:12:34.

Vettel, and this is Round 12 of 19. He has to turn it around soon

:12:34.:12:39.

because he is almost two complete race wins behind Vettel. Vettel

:12:39.:12:46.

snatch the title away from him in the final round so Alonso is hoping

:12:46.:12:52.

he will do the same thing -- snatched the title. Vettel is on a

:12:52.:12:58.

good lap as well. Three tenths of a second faster than his own margin

:12:58.:13:05.

previously. This lap is even faster still. Vettel in his groove

:13:05.:13:09.

straightaway. Out of the Parabolica still. Vettel in his groove

:13:09.:13:18.

he goes. Accelerating at over 200 miles an hour. The fastest lap we

:13:18.:13:25.

have seen so far this weekend for Vettel. It is the quickest in all

:13:25.:13:30.

other sectors, which is ominous for everybody else, because it means the

:13:30.:13:34.

car is working in pretty much every condition around the circuit, but

:13:34.:13:39.

that does not mean it will be a Spa type dominant performance. It is a

:13:39.:13:49.

very different circuit to Spa. How would you, what would you

:13:49.:13:56.

characterise this Monza circuit? In my experience, in every type of

:13:56.:14:00.

category of racing, you need to have a very stable car, you need to be

:14:00.:14:05.

confident when you hit that brake pedal hard, that you know what the

:14:05.:14:10.

car is going to do. You want to be able to predict it very easy.

:14:10.:14:14.

Afterwards, when you get in towards the apex, you need the front to

:14:15.:14:18.

Afterwards, when you get in towards up and allow you to go full

:14:18.:14:25.

throttle. As a driver you need attacking finesse, you cannot be too

:14:25.:14:30.

brutal with the car in turning in to the throttle, you have to have

:14:30.:14:35.

velvet gloves on. A little correction on the steering wheel as

:14:35.:14:40.

Alonso comes out. The fingers of his right hand flicking the paddle as he

:14:40.:14:42.

makes his way down to the Parabolica right hand flicking the paddle as he

:14:42.:14:44.

corner and the curves are such a big right hand flicking the paddle as he

:14:44.:14:46.

heart of Monza as well. I am delighted to say he is in the

:14:46.:15:13.

pit lane and joins us now. Congratulations on this fantastic

:15:13.:15:15.

pit lane and joins us now. opportunity. How did you feel about

:15:15.:15:20.

this morning? A fantastic opportunity to get back into the

:15:20.:15:26.

car. I had so much fun. Over the moon to be here. In the morning, it

:15:26.:15:34.

ran smoothly and a made no mistakes. I was able to give some good feed

:15:34.:15:38.

back to these boys in this session I was able to give some good feed

:15:38.:15:44.

now. Over the moon. Alan is joining me in the commentary box. He was

:15:44.:15:50.

describing the Monza circuit as a place you need velvet gloves. Is

:15:50.:15:56.

that how you found it? That is a pretty good description. It is very

:15:56.:16:04.

tough on braking. It is where you gain most black time at monster.

:16:04.:16:07.

tough on braking. It is where you They added it is to progress the

:16:08.:16:14.

car and get it good on brakes. -- lap time at monster. It was amazing

:16:14.:16:20.

on brakes, especially at the start. At the end I was able to give

:16:20.:16:27.

feedback. It was not stable. In the end, I was happy and only used one

:16:27.:16:32.

set of tyres and was able to match my same lap time. Just one question,

:16:32.:16:39.

you drove the young driver test at Silverstone. You talked about prep

:16:39.:16:43.

was not the power and straight-line speed you had to get used to come

:16:43.:16:48.

up was at the same here? Silverstone is a very different

:16:48.:16:53.

circuit. Part of the reason for me doing free practice is because the

:16:53.:16:58.

jump from Formula One 2 GP2 is not as big as Silverstone and Monaco.

:16:58.:17:04.

It was not a problem to adapt. In terms of power, it is not much

:17:04.:17:10.

different. It is the sheer downforce the cars have. The

:17:10.:17:16.

braking force is incredible. They have all the fancy electronics.

:17:16.:17:22.

That also accounts for lifetime. The record for Force India has been

:17:22.:17:29.

pretty good. What sort of shape is your team in for the weekend? You

:17:29.:17:35.

are locked into an intense Championship battle for 5th place

:17:35.:17:39.

with the McLaren team. It is an important weekend. Practice went

:17:39.:17:46.

well. We will have to see how they went on in the session. I was happy

:17:46.:17:52.

with the car towards the end of the session after I got rid of the

:17:52.:17:58.

sheer delight of driving in Formula One. They have been good in

:17:58.:18:03.

straight-line speed. Women who next be in the car on Friday morning? --

when will you next? Probably in Abu be in the car on Friday morning? --

Dhabi a. It is or was great when young drivers get an opportunity,

:18:13.:18:16.

even better when young British young drivers get an opportunity,

:18:16.:18:21.

drivers get an opportunity. -- it is always great. Thank you. The

:18:21.:18:30.

reserve driver for the Force India team are joining us there.

:18:30.:18:33.

Fantastic to see him getting his chance. It has been a week of

:18:33.:18:36.

opportunities. Red Bull it is a championship-

:18:36.:18:56.

winning car of last season - possibly this season as well. It

:18:56.:19:01.

was a long-term choice. Not just next year. Daniel Riccardo is going

:19:01.:19:06.

to have to take time to get up to speed and understand the

:19:06.:19:10.

differences in the team and also to work out Sebastian Vettel. That is

:19:10.:19:14.

a high benchmark. They are looking to develop him. Christian Horner

:19:14.:19:18.

said they were looking to develop him over the longer term. Their

:19:18.:19:25.

thoughts are 2015, 2016, as opposed to their first few races next year.

:19:25.:19:29.

Everyone talks about any Ricardo as a young driver. He is only two

:19:29.:19:34.

years younger than Sebastian Vettel. It shows you a lot about his

:19:34.:19:39.

achievement at a young age. It also shows you there is not much between

:19:39.:19:44.

them in terms of age but a lot between them in terms of experience.

:19:44.:19:48.

An hour and 10 minutes of this Friday free practice session

:19:48.:19:58.

remaining at the beautifully sunny Monza. The track temperature is 44

:19:58.:20:09.

degrees. We have Sebastian Vettel, the reigning world champion, at the

:20:09.:20:20.

top. Then it is Mark Webber, Nicky Rosberg, Kimi Raikkonen. Can Lewis

:20:20.:20:28.

Hamilton make it a 5th pole position in a row?

:20:28.:20:32.

A bit of work going on in the McLaren garage. Incidentally, we

:20:32.:20:41.

mentioned and Iran about the 50th anniversary. You can go to the BBC

:20:41.:20:47.

sport Facebook page 4 pictures of Mika Hakkinen, David Coulthard and

:20:47.:20:55.

Jenson Button. -- for pictures. We would like to know your favourite

:20:55.:21:00.

McLaren moment in F1 history. We will show you responses later. You

:21:00.:21:02.

have been getting in touch. A will show you responses later. You

:21:02.:21:09.

couple of questions here. It is a little bit quiet in the pit lane at

:21:09.:21:14.

the moment. This could prove to be a pivotal raised in the

:21:14.:21:19.

Championship if Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso are on the podium.

:21:19.:21:23.

I think Ferrari and Mercedes will be hoping for that. With the likes

:21:23.:21:35.

of Hulkenberg and di Resta be more attracted to this?

:21:35.:21:40.

There is no question about it. Ferrari, Alonso is number one. The

:21:41.:21:48.

Lotus team has been doing a fantastic job with the budget they

:21:48.:21:52.

have. Not many people would turn down a Ferrari drive. Would you?

:21:52.:21:58.

I'm not sure that is a problem I will ever have to face. A lucky few

:21:58.:22:05.

ever did. Filipe Massa is trying to focus on retaining his Ferrari

:22:05.:22:09.

opportunity. Many believe it is hanging by a thread at the moment.

:22:09.:22:14.

He has been in this situation many times before. The rumours are this

:22:14.:22:20.

could be the one that he does not quite so. The big question is, who

:22:20.:22:26.

will fill the seat for 2014 if that does happen? People are talking

:22:26.:22:33.

about a certain finish five. You have to remember that Filipe Massa

:22:33.:22:37.

is part of the family but that he has been part of it for a long time.

:22:37.:22:41.

We will be seeing if that is enough to keep him in that seat. Joining

:22:41.:22:46.

us now from the pit lane for the second time today his team

:22:46.:22:50.

principal of ripple racing, Christian Horner. -- Red Bull

:22:50.:23:00.

racing. There was an issue with a curse that to that we did not like

:23:00.:23:11.

the look of. -- KERS battery. He is about five minutes behind in the

:23:11.:23:16.

programme. It looks like Sebastian Vettel started on the front foot.

:23:16.:23:22.

Tell us a bit about this circuit and you and your team. You have won

:23:22.:23:26.

here but it would not necessarily suit your car on paper. How

:23:27.:23:32.

confident you feel? Traditionally it is a tough track. It exposes

:23:32.:23:37.

some of our weaknesses. There are long straights here and no real

:23:37.:23:43.

high-speed corners. For sure, it will probably suit Mercedes, we

:23:43.:23:48.

think, and Ferrari. They always put quite a lot of effort into this

:23:48.:23:54.

race. Hopefully we can take the fight to them. What is a weather

:23:54.:24:01.

forecasting for Sunday? One thing we saw of Sebastian Vettel's first

:24:01.:24:07.

victory was in the wet. We understand there could be some

:24:07.:24:13.

thunderstorms coming. There is some rain. Rain is not great here

:24:13.:24:16.

because it lingers in the trees and visibility is not great. It is the

:24:16.:24:19.

same for everyone but hopefully it visibility is not great. It is the

:24:19.:24:25.

will stay away until after the race. You are in a comfortable position

:24:25.:24:32.

in many ways. You have got a gap you can manage. Almost two race

:24:32.:24:38.

victories clear of your nearest rival. You need to throw a lot of

:24:38.:24:42.

effort into next year's new technology with a small capacity

:24:42.:24:47.

hybrid engine. Are you going to manage the Gap or will you try to

:24:47.:24:52.

crush the opposition? What is your focus? I do not think you can take

:24:52.:24:58.

anything for granted. 200 points are still available. It is a really

:24:58.:25:04.

difficult dilemma how much effort you put into this year and how much

:25:04.:25:09.

effort you put into next year. We will keep pushing and tried to get

:25:09.:25:13.

everything we can add of each individual event until the end of

:25:13.:25:16.

the year. -- out of each. Are you individual event until the end of

:25:16.:25:21.

happy there has been an announcement about driver line-up?

:25:21.:25:30.

I do not think it changes anything for us. Probably a bit of a

:25:30.:25:35.

distraction for me. As for the rest of the team, it does not really

:25:35.:25:40.

change anything. It is business as usual. It is great to get the

:25:40.:25:45.

announcement out there. I was asking you a minute ago about how

:25:45.:25:50.

you manage the margin. Looking at the run-in now, when we leave here

:25:50.:25:57.

we go to Singapore, Japan, Aberdovey. The places where you

:25:57.:26:00.

were strong, particularly with Sebastian Vettel. -- Abu Dhabi. As

:26:00.:26:09.

we said this year, before moves around a lot from circuit to

:26:09.:26:15.

circuit. -- perform. We're taking each race as it comes. Still a lot

:26:15.:26:21.

of points available in the Championship. Reliability, pace,

:26:21.:26:29.

and that will be critical. We are looking at the berm of Kamran for

:26:29.:26:33.

and that will be critical. We are Paul di Resta. -- the thermal

:26:33.:26:39.

camera. Can you see that? We are looking at it at the moment. It

:26:40.:26:45.

shows had dramatic the changes of temperature are, particularly for

:26:45.:26:51.

the high-energy corners. You can see it again now - the temperature

:26:51.:26:56.

building on the left-hand tyre. It will pull off down the straights.

:26:56.:26:59.

At the end of the straights, you will see a massive build-up in heat

:26:59.:27:04.

again. Quite an aggressive circuit on the brakes, put the energy into

:27:04.:27:08.

the tyre. It would have been interesting to have this on the

:27:08.:27:10.

cars at Silverstone. They were interesting to have this on the

:27:10.:27:15.

probably be showing more than yellow. Thank you for your time.I

:27:15.:27:22.

think looking at that on board and seeing the colour, it shows why

:27:22.:27:27.

there are so many mistakes. You can see the change in colour. That is a

:27:27.:27:33.

difficult thing to manage. The tyres cool down so much it is only

:27:33.:27:38.

be in there may be two inches that up to optimum temperature. When you

:27:38.:27:43.

hit the brakes, the load goes more on the car. I can see the straight

:27:43.:27:51.

line speed was of a big loss. We are looking into it. -- straight

:27:51.:27:57.

line speed. They are trying to work that out. Just one thing here, it

:27:57.:28:02.

is a very difficult thing to manage - the instantaneous build up of

:28:02.:28:06.

grip. If you do not have a feel for it, you can easily make mistakes.

:28:06.:28:12.

That is the art of what you can do - Beale for the grip and get their

:28:12.:28:18.

tyres up to temperature. The Pirelli tyres have been tricky -

:28:18.:28:24.

getting the front and the rear up to temperature at the same time.

:28:24.:28:28.

Jenson Button had a problem with that will start that -- a problem

:28:28.:28:38.

with that. He could not get proper balance. It is about tyre balanced

:28:38.:28:43.

and the driver balance. All of that coming together. With the way the

:28:43.:28:49.

Pirelli tyres have been, some teams and drivers seem to hit the sweet

:28:49.:28:54.

spot and others do not. When you talk about Jenson Button, he did

:28:54.:28:59.

struggle with that. Now they're coming back on stream. That was

:28:59.:29:07.

Kimi Raikkonen in the Lotus. Looking to see his time as he comes

:29:07.:29:20.

through. He sets 1:28.77. One hour of the session remaining. It is a

:29:20.:29:26.

90 minute session. They do some long runs, try some things out.

:29:26.:29:32.

That is the old banking from the beginning of racing through to the

:29:32.:29:36.

1970s. They finally got rid of it when the car's got to Crick. By dad

:29:36.:29:44.

used to race on that. -- the cars got too quick. There were

:29:44.:29:48.

centrifugal force. Only a little bit of tyre action and that was it.

:29:48.:29:56.

That was a braver man than me. That is a steep bank. It is difficult to

:29:56.:30:01.

climb up it, to the point where you are on your hands and toes. They

:30:01.:30:09.

had American Indy cars racing against Ferrari to produce a car

:30:09.:30:14.

against them. It is one time the Americans and Europeans were raised

:30:14.:30:15.

against them. It is one time the against each other. They called it

:30:15.:30:21.

the race of two worlds. Back in the 1950s when the Indy 500 was a World

:30:21.:30:26.

Championship round. Second mistake by Romain Grosjean. We were

:30:26.:30:33.

mentioning earlier, a huge stop from over 200 miles an hour. Nearly

:30:33.:30:40.

six G Wright on the driver's chest. Sebastian Vettel on the medium tyre.

:30:40.:30:50.

-- 6 capital G Wright on the driver's chest. Let's have a look

:30:50.:30:57.

what they should be. We have got the medium and harder compound tyre.

:30:57.:31:01.

Some would say a fairly conservative choice. We will see

:31:01.:31:06.

Conservative choices for the rest of the season. There will be fewer

:31:06.:31:13.

stops - probably one stop race for the weekend and for most people.

:31:13.:31:18.

Sebastian Vettel is almost too tense up after the first two

:31:18.:31:22.

sectors. The harder tyres can give that extra

:31:22.:31:47.

release of the speed. Not that much difference between the hard and the

:31:48.:31:50.

release of the speed. Not that much media at the moment. During the

:31:50.:31:56.

race, the degradation was the same between the two. Sergio Perez

:31:56.:32:04.

started the race on harder tyres, and managed to come from 12 up to

:32:04.:32:10.

second place, so that was a woody top strategy last year. -- a really

:32:10.:32:17.

top strategy. Strategy is a fascinating part of the game at

:32:17.:32:24.

Monza. I know it is early days, I was saying it is likely to be a

:32:24.:32:29.

one-stop strategy for a lot of people, but how are you seeing the

:32:29.:32:34.

deformities of the tie years? Three tenths of a second between the hard

:32:34.:32:42.

and medium? -- - performance of the tyres? You do not gain as much as

:32:42.:32:50.

you think. You may see some people getting the better lap time on the

:32:50.:32:57.

second lap on the medium tyres. My predictions so far is that a two

:32:57.:33:06.

stop is six or seven seconds slower. So it is quite close. It depends on

:33:06.:33:13.

the car. I was talking to one of the engineers who were saying that if

:33:13.:33:17.

you are going to do it properly, a Monza package, for want of a better

:33:17.:33:25.

word, you need a front wing, a rear wing, a floor, brake ducts, it is

:33:25.:33:33.

easy to drop 1.2 million on your Monza package! A lot of money for

:33:34.:33:39.

one race. Who is going for it this weekend? Everybody is going for it.

:33:39.:33:47.

We used to have two of these races so it justified it. But now there is

:33:47.:33:55.

only this one. It is a lot of money. You cannot run here without doing it

:33:55.:34:01.

though. You have to play around with the front wing to get the balance. I

:34:01.:34:09.

do think Red Bull are pursuing straight-line speed quite closely.

:34:09.:34:16.

Vettel has had some of the bits of the front wing removed. He is

:34:16.:34:24.

quickest at the moment. There are six slot gaps. I think everybody is

:34:24.:34:32.

still pushing pretty hard to come away from Monza with the best result

:34:32.:34:40.

and money is not the object. Vettel, weather and Ross -- Tosberg on the

:34:40.:35:03.

medium tyres. -- Rosberg. Webber, personal best in one and two.

:35:03.:35:17.

Hamilton is yet to use the medium compound tyre.

:35:17.:35:32.

Perez has a set of the medium tyres now which should improve his pace,

:35:32.:35:42.

currently 10th. Also Felipe Massa coming down into Parabolica, the

:35:42.:35:47.

final corner. The Ferrari has not looked as quite as stable as I would

:35:47.:35:53.

have expected. It has a reasonably gentle front end on it. They have

:35:53.:35:57.

been pushing the limits on it. This team needs to push the investment

:35:57.:35:59.

into the race. A lot of pressure on Ferrari to

:35:59.:36:14.

perform this weekend and get back in the game. The confidence Ricciardo

:36:14.:36:18.

must be feeling, knowing his future is secure for the next couple of

:36:18.:36:24.

years. The Red Bull team have told him they should be pressuring Vettel

:36:24.:36:32.

by midway through the season. If I was in Ricciardo's shoes, the

:36:32.:36:36.

crucial thing is not to try to beat Sebastien -- Vettel, the crucial

:36:37.:36:46.

thing is to make sure Ricciardo delivers his best 20 times a year

:36:46.:36:51.

because whatever that brings will be delivers his best 20 times a year

:36:51.:36:56.

good enough. For Ricciardo it will be trying to manage expectations.

:36:56.:37:05.

There is no way saying there is no way I am going to beat him, I am

:37:05.:37:10.

there to play down the expectations. But I am sure that there will be

:37:10.:37:15.

expectations from Red Bull. He will But I am sure that there will be

:37:15.:37:19.

have to lift their game. They are expecting him to finish on the

:37:19.:37:21.

podium, quite early on. The expecting him to finish on the

:37:21.:37:27.

constructors' title will rest on Ricciardo's season, not on

:37:27.:37:35.

Vettel's. Absolutely. Webber's extra points have brought them the

:37:35.:37:40.

constructors. It is not inconceivable that Ricciardo will do

:37:40.:37:46.

as well as Webber. Webber is averaging 10.8 Grand Prix. That is

:37:46.:37:52.

just off the podium. He should be aiming to be on the podium. It is a

:37:53.:37:58.

pretty big ask but it is something he will be aiming for and so will

:37:58.:38:00.

the team. When we saw the Mercedes he will be aiming for and so will

:38:00.:38:08.

of Hamilton starting his lap, he is weaving around a lot and that is the

:38:08.:38:13.

one thing here, to try to bring the tyres up to temperature and pressure

:38:13.:38:19.

at the right point for these first important chicanes is very critical.

:38:19.:38:23.

You will see some of them weaving around more than they would do at

:38:23.:38:27.

other circuits. The Ferrari bounces over the curves.

:38:27.:38:44.

You were talking about the cost of preparing wings for the race because

:38:44.:38:51.

it is so specific and that could be a problem for Williams because

:38:51.:38:56.

Bottas is reporting that his front wing is dragging massively on the

:38:56.:39:01.

straights. We heard earlier this morning Jenson Button having a

:39:01.:39:07.

problem. His TRS got stuck and it was a bit hairy for him -- DRS. But

:39:07.:39:17.

it was a problem with the parts. That is another thing. They don't

:39:17.:39:23.

use this rear wing very often. The sporting director said it should not

:39:23.:39:26.

happen again and the problem is resolved.

:39:26.:39:32.

Thank you, Jenny. Lewis Hamilton in fifth place now. Fernando Alonso

:39:32.:39:42.

just in front of him. Charles Pic, not the first man to get it wrong in

:39:42.:39:48.

the first chicane. Everyone gets it wrong into there! You are pushing

:39:48.:39:49.

the brakes as late as possible. If wrong into there! You are pushing

:39:49.:39:55.

you can keep the temperature on the tyres, it helps you for the next

:39:55.:40:01.

one. But in one tenth of a second, you are travelling ten metres so a

:40:01.:40:08.

small-time mistake is a big penalty. It is a bit like getting a duck in

:40:08.:40:13.

cricket. Until you have done it, you are not a cricketer. I am Scottish,

:40:13.:40:20.

we do not know what cricket is. I will explain it to you.

:40:20.:40:32.

That is what an engineer hates. When a driver says "everywhere".

:40:32.:40:42.

At the halfway point in this free practice two session. Not exactly

:40:42.:40:48.

qualifying simulations. Lewis Hamilton being given verbal

:40:48.:41:02.

instructions. They have lost the data that come from the car back to

:41:02.:41:07.

the pits in real-time. They are capable of getting them back to the

:41:07.:41:12.

factories in real-time as well. For Mercedes, that is back in

:41:12.:41:17.

Silverstone. The engineers are sitting there watching everything

:41:17.:41:21.

that is going on. For Hamilton, they are now looking at a blank screen.

:41:21.:41:23.

Vettel on top. Then Webber. I think they are pursuing

:41:23.:41:34.

straight-line speed for Sebastian Vettel. It is a minute rear wing on

:41:34.:41:42.

the Red Bull. To get the balance on the front wing, they have taken off

:41:42.:41:52.

some parts. There are seven elements and six slot gaps. The area in front

:41:52.:41:56.

of the tyres are very critical because when you are producing

:41:56.:42:02.

downforce, then you turn the front wheels into the corner, you change

:42:02.:42:07.

the way the area of the wing produces completely. So more slot

:42:07.:42:16.

gaps means more consistent airflow. It is quite an impressive piece of

:42:16.:42:18.

kit. It certainly is. The highest speed we have seen so

:42:18.:42:29.

far in the session has been Ricciardo, 211 miles an hour.

:42:29.:42:40.

It gives you an idea of the speeds they are travelling at. It is the

:42:40.:42:48.

only time of the season that the Formula One cars reach those kinds

:42:48.:42:56.

of speeds. You don't see straight-line speeds as high as that

:42:56.:43:00.

anywhere else on the calendar. The important thing is it is not just

:43:00.:43:07.

once a lap they are over 200 mph. You have another four straights

:43:07.:43:11.

where you have these high speeds. From that point of view it is

:43:11.:43:15.

important to have the efficiency of the straight-line speed. I think Red

:43:15.:43:22.

Bull's idea of the low downforce is their strategy. Normally they have a

:43:22.:43:34.

bit more downforce to break the DRS possibility. I am not sure it would

:43:34.:43:42.

work here. Vettel won in Canada and was strong with the straight-line

:43:42.:43:46.

speeds in Spa, which was one of the cornerstones of his win, he was able

:43:46.:43:53.

to go past Hamilton on straight-line speed and that is very unusual, a

:43:53.:43:58.

Red Bull overtaking a Mercedes down a straight. They have obviously

:43:58.:44:03.

found something for these high-speed sections that is really working for

:44:03.:44:08.

them. Different in character from places where they are normally

:44:08.:44:13.

strong like Silverstone. The interesting thing in Spa is that

:44:13.:44:17.

even though they do not have much wing, they are still very good with

:44:17.:44:24.

the corners. They were extremely quick in the middle sector at Spa.

:44:24.:44:28.

Hamilton was surprised how fast they were on the streets in the midfield

:44:28.:44:38.

section. Raikkonen goes third fastest on the medium tyres. Still

:44:38.:44:49.

some way off the pace set by Vettel. Raikkonen is in third for Lotus.

:44:49.:44:57.

Alonso is fourth, Hamilton is fifth. Jenny has found the Pirelli boss.

:44:57.:45:09.

This is a big race for you, the Italian fans are here, how important

:45:09.:45:17.

is it to have a strong weekend to? Very important. You can hear the

:45:17.:45:26.

cars. It is a very much of a home race for us. It is hot, which we

:45:26.:45:32.

like to see in Monza. So far so good. You bought the medium and the

:45:33.:45:38.

hard tyres this weekend. How tough is this circuit on your tyres?

:45:38.:45:42.

hard tyres this weekend. How tough Everyone was talking about the

:45:42.:45:46.

high-speed, it is not so much that but breaking from high speeds. It

:45:46.:45:53.

creates blistering, this circuit. We have not seen it so far. We are very

:45:53.:45:59.

limited but the teams have been looking at a one-stop race here. We

:45:59.:46:05.

vary what we see in terms of stoppages but this is likely to be a

:46:05.:46:12.

one-stop. This is James Allen and Allan McNish. We have this thermal

:46:12.:46:14.

camera this weekend. You are seeing the extreme

:46:14.:46:53.

temperatures that the tyres go up to. But if you are in flat spots you

:46:53.:47:03.

can go up to 100 degrees, so the life of the tyre is tough. Would you

:47:03.:47:08.

say that one or two teams seem to have got a grip of the latest tyre

:47:09.:47:15.

more than others? I don't think there is much of a difference. We

:47:15.:47:22.

have exactly the same tyres as we had last year. We wanted to make it

:47:22.:47:32.

as easy as possible which is why we went in that direction. A mistake

:47:32.:47:37.

from Nico Rosberg going into the first chicane. He had to go straight

:47:37.:47:45.

back on again. You said it is likely to be a one-stop race. Monza always

:47:45.:47:50.

was the Grand Prix web designers would design the fuel tanks for a

:47:50.:47:56.

one-stop race. -- where the designers. Are we going to see a

:47:56.:48:03.

similar pattern, will the race be less oriented about the pit stops?

:48:03.:48:10.

We were looking at the choice is going on to the end of the season

:48:10.:48:16.

today. Places last year where we have maybe taken one step more.

:48:16.:48:23.

Monza is tough, you have got Suzuka coming up where you have to on the

:48:23.:48:27.

side of caution, but then places like Austin where we can make it

:48:27.:48:33.

up, so we do not expect to see many more one-stop races. We are looking

:48:33.:48:42.

at a bit of the tyre on Paul di Resta's are heating up as it goes

:48:42.:48:45.

at a bit of the tyre on Paul di through the corners. The thermal

:48:45.:48:50.

imaging is pretty spectacular. Actually I think that was Pastor

:48:50.:48:56.

Maldonado was Mac. Amazing images. You use that for testing. It shows

:48:56.:49:01.

the level of technology going into working on the tyres. Yeah. We have

:49:01.:49:09.

eight or nine infrared cameras. The big job is treating the data we

:49:09.:49:15.

picked up and turning them into the images you are seeing. That takes

:49:15.:49:21.

some very clever IT work. We use it on all sorts of development cars.

:52:39.:52:43.

heading the field, he is only four seconds a lap slower than he was

:52:43.:52:51.

before. -- if he is. It shows that car is quick on a single lap and

:52:51.:52:57.

quick on a long race. We have seen that by the results. For the fuel,

:52:57.:53:01.

there are less corners ban on normal circuits. It may be

:53:01.:53:08.

different than Barcelona. Daniel Okada will be sitting in a Red Bull

car. As we go on board, it is getting bumpy. Easy to get

:53:14.:53:18.

wheelspin, especially when the tyres are dropping off. This is

:53:18.:53:23.

wide open throttle. Very easy to take the line through here. Try to

:53:23.:53:30.

spot the brakes. After that is your braking point. You can take one or

:53:30.:53:35.

the other. A usually end up running over the kerb on the left-hand

:53:48.:53:56.

car out to the right hand kerb. Underneath the old track Bridge. In

:53:56.:54:02.

that over the kerb on the left. Wide open throttle through the

:54:02.:54:07.

right. Straighten up the wheel. Try to let the car be as free as

:54:07.:54:14.

possible. This is where you break about 50m and ran it in towards the

:54:14.:54:21.

apex. At this moment, you hang on a second before squeezing on throttle

:54:21.:54:28.

and running out towards the white line. Daniel Ricciardo dropped down

:54:28.:54:34.

a gear. He ticket down a gear. Jackie Stewart used to say, the

:54:34.:54:41.

higher be clear you go into a corner, the more stable a car is.

:54:41.:54:45.

But lower the gear, the more jumpy it is. With these gearboxes, it is

:54:45.:54:55.

pretty seamless. When you change down, it is more your engine note

:54:55.:55:01.

that tells you if it has changed any more. He pulled it down at the

:55:02.:55:08.

apex to get the car to hook up. It allows you to get back on the

:55:08.:55:14.

throttle. It is an alternative to braking. It has a braking effect a

:55:14.:55:19.

more knock some speed off. Without question. If you lift off in second

:55:19.:55:24.

gear with wide open throttle, it will be like hitting the standard

:55:24.:55:30.

brakes. If you shift down, you have engine braking prior to hitting the

:55:30.:55:32.

brakes. If you shift down, you have brake pedal. A some idea of what it

stabbed there is a penalty. -- extra fuel. Sebastian Vettel is on

a hard tyre. Always after the first pit stop. I am 99.9 to 9% sure the

top guy can qualified on a medium tyre will start -- 99.99 %.

:56:27.:56:34.

Sebastian Vettel is doing a long rant on the hard tyre. -- a long

:56:34.:56:43.

run. He would have had about nine kilograms of fuel in the car. That

:56:43.:56:47.

is equivalent to about four seconds in-lap time. It is how you try to

:56:47.:56:56.

get a team to work together was dug there is no point Sebastian Vettel

:56:56.:57:03.

having a cup full of fuel. -- work together. Last year, we are talking

:57:03.:57:09.

about it earlier on, remember that Sergio Perez started the Grand Prix

:57:09.:57:13.

on a hard compound tyre. That is the same tired we have here this

:57:13.:57:19.

year. He did a long stint on the hard tyre and changed on to the

:57:19.:57:24.

mediums. He came through the field to finish in second place. If

:57:24.:57:30.

you're not a midfield team, but not a top team and you're on the back

:57:30.:57:35.

end of the top 10, which you think about going out on a harder

:57:35.:57:41.

compound tyre? We do try to do it from a higher grade slot? -- we do

:57:41.:57:50.

try? The medium tyre will be tha stare at the beginning of the race.

:57:50.:57:59.

-- will be better at the beginning of the race. If you are further

:57:59.:58:06.

back, you can start on whatever tyre you want. Sergio Perez was a

:58:06.:58:14.

long way back last year. He did not do much of a different stint. It

:58:14.:58:21.

was not sort of that he had a quick tyre. He qualified at of position.

:58:21.:58:29.

The Sauber last year is a lot better than this year. With 30

:58:29.:58:33.

minutes of the session remaining, we had the session this morning,

:58:33.:58:40.

who is looking good? The usual bunch - Mercedes come at Ferrari.

:58:40.:58:50.

The Red Bulls are up there. -- Mercedes, a Ferrari. Romain

:58:50.:58:59.

Grosjean, I am not sure where he is. It is a good comparison. It will be

:58:59.:59:10.

very close. Getting the medium tyre to work on the first lap when it

:59:10.:59:13.

has its best grip, without the straight line penalty is the

:59:13.:59:19.

biggest challenge. It has always been a challenge and will be a

:59:19.:59:26.

challenge again. Romain Grosjean has set an identical lap time. I

:59:27.:59:32.

have not seen characteristics in the lotus to help them. Anything to

:59:32.:59:39.

give it more stability under braking are the chicanes will study

:59:39.:59:43.

had to have a problem before you can fix it. You can keep changing

:59:43.:59:52.

things with the car. Maybe they will not have two of them, maybe

:59:52.:59:59.

they well. Very briefly, in layman's terms, at long wheelbase.

:59:59.:00:03.

What they had done is move the front wheels forward. I think they

:00:03.:00:08.

have made for it about four inches was up you have to do a new crash-

:00:08.:00:16.

test with their nose. -- moved forward it about four inches. By

:00:16.:00:19.

doing that, you get less weight forward it about four inches. By

:00:19.:00:26.

transfer on braking. There is that a less weight on the front axle.

:00:26.:00:34.

These cars end up transferring about 250 kilograms of load up the

:00:34.:00:44.

rear tyres on to the front tyres. That is the only advantage I can

:00:44.:00:48.

see the stub whether it is a big enough advantage, I do not know. --

:00:48.:00:59.

I can see. Identical lap times for the pair. That will give them a bit

:00:59.:01:07.

of a head scratch. They are fighting for the World Championship.

:01:07.:01:14.

It is not all over yet. They have done it for competitiveness. It

:01:14.:01:20.

does send Dad a little sick not in Formula One. -- send it out a

:01:20.:01:26.

little signal. Lotus is always pushing hard. Also to Kimi

:01:26.:01:31.

Raikkonen, who is willing to put in the effort to get the World

:01:31.:01:37.

Championship. In his situation with did not finish he had in the last

:01:37.:01:41.

grand prix, that put him on the back foot without any question. It

:01:41.:01:47.

was a fantastic record by Lotus for reliability and Kimi Raikkonen to

:01:47.:01:52.

go solo without having any problems. It is unfortunate in happened at a

:01:52.:02:05.

critical stage. Sergio Perez has a problem at the second chicane but

:02:05.:02:08.

there he almost rips off the floor of the McLaren. -- but he almost

:02:08.:02:13.

rips off the floor. 27 minutes of the session remaining.

:02:13.:02:36.

A plastic tear got into the braking system and it caused it to fail.

:02:36.:02:40.

A plastic tear got into the braking This stupid little thing that the

:02:40.:02:42.

driver and the team cannot do much This stupid little thing that the

:02:42.:02:47.

about. They could retrieve it at the first pit stop but by then the

:02:47.:02:51.

damage had been done. The Lotus looks stable generally. It is not

:02:51.:03:00.

quick reaction inputs, it is a very small and gentle input. They must

:03:00.:03:04.

feel they have a potential with a longer wheelbase but I think it will

:03:04.:03:08.

be over a race distance where you will see that. The Lotus is already

:03:08.:03:15.

very kind to its tyres. It can go longer on these Pirellis than the

:03:15.:03:22.

others. They are not the fastest in a single that but certainly very

:03:22.:03:27.

good over the longer run. Quite a weapon for Raikkonen and no shortage

:03:27.:03:32.

of push from the 2007 world champion.

:03:32.:03:46.

Vettel's engineer was speaking to him and looking at Vettel's long

:03:46.:03:51.

runs, they are looking very good. Vettel is hanging those lap times

:03:51.:04:08.

in. 28.6, 28.5, 28.48, pretty impressive. The key with target

:04:08.:04:16.

shooting is to have the holes in the target as close as possible to each

:04:16.:04:20.

other and Vettel's lap times, the fuel is burning off all the time.

:04:20.:04:27.

Having said that he has just done 28.2 on the last lap. The tyre is

:04:27.:04:33.

clearly holding up as the fuel load burns off and it looks like a very

:04:33.:04:38.

consistent run indeed from Sebastian Vettel in the Red Bull. The reigning

:04:38.:04:51.

world champion is on top of the time sheets with 25 minutes of the

:04:51.:04:52.

session remaining. Hamilton has been in pole position

:04:52.:05:17.

for four in a row, record-breaking for him, can he make it five?

:05:17.:05:26.

Two 100ths of a second is the difference between Hamilton and

:05:26.:05:32.

Rosberg, only! Vettel is nine tenths of a second

:05:32.:05:48.

faster on lap 12 than he was on the first one, that is the weight to the

:05:48.:05:54.

fuel. All four wheels are drifting, not just the rear one, so he is

:05:54.:05:59.

reasonably aggressive on the throttle. The car looks extremely

:05:59.:06:02.

reasonably aggressive on the stable and he looks like a man with

:06:02.:06:07.

total control and confidence in his car. Gary Anderson has looked at the

:06:07.:06:10.

data from Vettel's long runs. The fuel load is equivalent to 0.8

:06:10.:06:26.

seconds. So you should go faster if the tyre is staying consistent. It

:06:26.:06:35.

does look like Vettel will have no problems unless the tyres wear out.

:06:35.:06:40.

But they are definitely not degrading. There may just not be

:06:40.:06:44.

enough rubber on them to accept the sliding. The shoulder gets dragged

:06:44.:06:49.

around all these right-hand corners, sliding. The shoulder gets dragged

:06:49.:07:02.

then Parabolica and the two Lesmos, but they do look pretty consistent.

:07:02.:07:07.

It looks like the front is biting nicely and then he is getting back

:07:07.:07:11.

on the throttle. The car looks in line all the way through. The

:07:11.:07:20.

important thing is if you can get the balance in the where, and you

:07:20.:07:24.

are not having one axle is sliding, and the other not, it stays

:07:24.:07:33.

consistent, it uses all four tyres consistently, so ideal if you have

:07:33.:07:39.

that sort of balance. Sebastian Vettel is in the pit stop, you might

:07:39.:07:44.

be able to go and have a look at his tyres. We are now on board with Nico

:07:44.:07:51.

Hulkenberg, also on a long run. 28.2 was the last one. 1.8 seconds slower

:07:51.:08:03.

for a lap than Vettel. But the fuel weight effect is still quite

:08:03.:08:04.

predominant. Sauber are still waiting for the

:08:04.:08:13.

Russian investment coming through. Hamilton distracted I think slightly

:08:13.:08:25.

by the car that came out onto the line in front of him. Doing exactly

:08:25.:08:31.

what Rosberg did five or ten minutes ago. Watched by Toto Wolf. Had the

:08:31.:08:47.

opportunity to be the Mercedes Chief Executive and also to buy shares.

:08:47.:08:55.

Nevertheless you sense a real rising tide of momentum within that team.

:08:55.:09:00.

Wings seem to have fallen into place. He has got his role, Wolf.

:09:00.:09:13.

Does it feel a bit like a wave, the wave is growing? Hamilton says that

:09:13.:09:20.

is exactly what he feels like. They improved their car from what was

:09:20.:09:24.

already pretty quick last year to something that is quick on every

:09:24.:09:28.

occasion this year. With Lewis Hamilton, who I consider probably

:09:28.:09:33.

the quickest guy over one lap in qualifying situation, he himself has

:09:33.:09:40.

fitted into the team now, he has his feet under the table, he understands

:09:40.:09:43.

the car better and he is able to produce some of the best drives that

:09:43.:09:48.

we have seen in quite a long time. 20 minutes to go in the second free

:09:48.:09:55.

practice session for Sunday's Italian Grand Prix in Monza. Track

:09:55.:10:01.

temperature is 44 degrees. James Allen and Allan McNish with you.

:10:01.:10:07.

Sebastian Vettel is fastest. Ahead of his team-mate, Mark Webber. The

:10:08.:10:14.

two Lotus are third and forced. -- third and fourth.

:10:14.:10:23.

Chilton at the moment is on top in the battle of the small teams at the

:10:23.:10:29.

back of the field. Gary Anderson is at Red Bull.

:10:29.:10:34.

Vettel went straight into the pits and went straight back out again.

:10:34.:10:42.

Then after that lap he put on the medium tyre. They did not change the

:10:42.:10:48.

fuel load. This will be a good comparison of lap time to see if the

:10:48.:10:53.

medium tyre was faster. You gather so much data and a lot is sent back

:10:53.:10:58.

from the pits. Around the track sometimes you do not get a good

:10:58.:11:02.

reception. But that first visit from the pits, it may have been to

:11:02.:11:11.

download the data from the car. Then they can gather more data to look at

:11:11.:11:15.

later on tonight after he has changed tyres. You can see the

:11:15.:11:26.

thermal imaging camera. It is warmer, but still some generation of

:11:26.:11:31.

load. If you see it again later on on a big long straight, it was cool

:11:31.:11:36.

down so it will only be the inside edge that has got the temperature,

:11:36.:11:41.

and then when you hit the brakes it will instantly flare up. It is

:11:41.:11:44.

impressive, a stunning piece of imagery. And interesting to bring it

:11:45.:11:48.

out at this stage. We have had some problems with the

:11:48.:11:58.

tyres this season, in Bahrain and then at Silverstone. Clearly this is

:11:58.:12:04.

about showing what they go through and how it works. Interestingly we

:12:04.:12:08.

also have tyres from what we are seeing that are super consistent.

:12:08.:12:15.

The fact that Vettel's performance over ten laps is more or less what

:12:15.:12:19.

you would do simply by learning the fuel loss, that is to say the tyres

:12:19.:12:25.

are not degrading any more, that was not what he really wanted, they

:12:25.:12:30.

wanted the tyres that would degrade, add to the spectacle. There has been

:12:30.:12:35.

a big ideological debate as to whether that is what Formula One

:12:35.:12:36.

a big ideological debate as to should be about. Red Bull say they

:12:36.:12:43.

want tyres to go for ever. That is a discussion to be had. Hamilton once

:12:43.:12:47.

again missing a breaking point in the second chicane. Very interesting

:12:47.:12:55.

to have this thermal imaging camera on this car throughout this weekend

:12:55.:13:01.

on Paul di Resta's car. Alonso, medium tyre. He is over one second a

:13:01.:13:07.

lap slower for most of it than Vettel. But of course, what we don't

:13:07.:13:15.

know is how much more fuel he is carrying than Vettel. If he has 30

:13:15.:13:18.

know is how much more fuel he is kilos more, Vettel's tyre was on the

:13:18.:13:32.

harder compound before. Vettel is now doing 27.6 on the medium tyre

:13:32.:13:37.

though significantly faster than the Ferrari. But 30 kilos of fuel, 35

:13:37.:13:45.

kilos of fuel, is about one second. Do you think that is what it is? Red

:13:45.:13:51.

Bull and the other teams may not the thoroughly have the same fuel load

:13:51.:13:58.

for the various different tyre performance runs. I have seen teams

:13:58.:14:02.

run a different fuel load for each tyre to try to stimulate different

:14:02.:14:07.

parts of the race which spices things up further. Right now the

:14:07.:14:11.

Ferraris are probably not quite on things up further. Right now the

:14:11.:14:14.

the pace of the Red Bull, because both the Red Bulls of Sebastian

:14:14.:14:20.

Vettel and Mark Webber on the long runs on both tyres looked to be

:14:20.:14:24.

pretty consistent. And we are never quite sure how high they have the

:14:24.:14:28.

engine is turned up on a Friday afternoon. They are certainly not

:14:28.:14:34.

running at full power. This is one of those race tracks, along with

:14:34.:14:37.

Spa, where they want to try to have a brand-new engine on Saturday

:14:37.:14:42.

morning for peak performance. They have to make eight engines lost

:14:42.:14:47.

throughout a 19 race championship, which is no mean feat. In practice

:14:47.:14:55.

they will be using an engine which may have competed for example in a

:14:55.:14:57.

wet race earlier in the season. Maximum power is not being used.

:14:57.:15:11.

They know how much more speed they would have if they used for power

:15:11.:15:17.

to do these runs. We will find out on Saturday afternoon when everyone

:15:17.:15:23.

goes for it. Then we will see who has the fastest car. Pastor

:15:23.:15:32.

Maldonado out on circuit. Valtteri Bottas is a -- his 18th.

:15:32.:16:00.

Come back like that. Do not go down in the first or second. You will

:16:00.:16:10.

have to go from second into neutral. Problem with the gearbox with

:16:10.:16:15.

Filipe Massa. The engineer is telling him to drive back safely

:16:15.:16:25.

and slowly. It was a 42nd sector. He has a fair way to get back to

:16:25.:16:32.

the pits. Your thoughts? We have seen a couple of gearbox problems.

:16:32.:16:41.

The cars are so light that when they are riding over the kerbs at

:16:41.:16:49.

the chicane scrap the wheels are so light. -- the chicanes, the wheels

:16:49.:16:57.

are so light. This is a difficult surface. Sometimes when the wheels

:16:57.:17:03.

land, they spike through the line. Kimi Raikkonen got it a little bit

:17:03.:17:11.

wrong at the first chicane. We are talking about the shaking and

:17:11.:17:17.

shuddering or suspension. It is a surprise for me, to be honest. We

:17:17.:17:22.

have had a Nico Hulkenberg this morning and now Filipe Massa. I

:17:22.:17:27.

know there are places like that but I have never seen this number and

:17:27.:17:34.

frequency. You would have called that a sleeping policeman. In Le

:17:34.:17:43.

Mans, they were called baguettes. Black stuck in my mind. Into the

:17:43.:17:47.

final 12 minutes. -- that stuck. We Black stuck in my mind. Into the

:17:47.:17:55.

were talking earlier on about telemetry - the data cent in real

:17:55.:18:02.

time from the cars. 120 sensors measuring wheel speeds and

:18:02.:18:07.

temperatures and pressures. When the car is on the circuit, they can

:18:07.:18:11.

look at the steering. They can see when the driver has made a mistake.

:18:11.:18:17.

There is no work for a grand prix driver to hide in modern Formula

:18:18.:18:24.

One. -- nowhere. In the holidays they could tell the mechanics and

:18:24.:18:30.

engineers are what the car was doing. - us the old days. Nowhere

:18:30.:18:39.

to hide for a modern grand prix driver. They are watching all this

:18:39.:18:43.

data coming through in real time and making decisions. As for

:18:43.:18:47.

Sunday's race, they make a lot of strategy decisions, based on a lot

:18:47.:18:50.

of that data as well. Who is strategy decisions, based on a lot

:18:50.:18:55.

looking good in the middle of the field? We have talked about Red

:18:55.:19:00.

Bull. We have not seen where everyone is at. They have been

:19:00.:19:06.

doing different programmes. Can you draw any conclusions? We would

:19:06.:19:12.

normally see Force India being very strong. Paul di Resta is only in

:19:12.:19:17.

11th at this point. You have picked up on the two cars that have the

:19:17.:19:25.

most chance now. Everybody ahead of them, in pure time, is doing a very

:19:25.:19:31.

good job. Force India right now is back into the midfield area. The

:19:31.:19:36.

likes of McLaren have jumped up a little bit. Mercedes are keeping

:19:36.:19:40.

the high performance level right the way through. In Montreal, the

:19:40.:19:51.

last circuit on this aerodynamics circuit, Paul di Resta had a really

:19:51.:19:56.

good ran. They are certainly the ones I would watch out for right

:19:56.:20:01.

now. Filipe Massa is out of this session. We heard him telling the

:20:01.:20:06.

team he had a problem with the gearbox. He only had third gear to

:20:06.:20:10.

get back to the pit lane. Lots of black smoke coming out of the left

:20:10.:20:15.

front tyre of Adrian Sutil. He tried to break from about 210 miles

:20:15.:20:22.

an hour for the first chicane. A big stop - 150 metres. He gets down

:20:22.:20:33.

to around 50, 60 miles an hour for the first chicane. Over 210 miles

:20:33.:20:39.

an hour. A brutal experience for car and driver. The other a Toro

:20:40.:20:45.

Rosso driver, overlooked for the seat of Mark Webber next year, he

:20:45.:20:52.

has been assured his place is secured with the team for next year.

:20:52.:20:57.

Who do you think they will put into the team? They have two guys

:20:57.:21:03.

knocking on the door. One is Antonio Felix de Costa. He is more

:21:03.:21:08.

mature than the son of the former world rally champion but looked

:21:09.:21:12.

quick in the young drivers test. I think at this moment, to cast a has

:21:13.:21:19.

probably got the best chance. I do think it will be a young Red Bull

:21:19.:21:26.

driver coming through the system. I think it is logical they will try

:21:26.:21:29.

to do that with one of the juniors coming through. Right now I think

:21:29.:21:36.

Antonia Felix de Costa is in a prime seat but he needs to prove

:21:36.:21:40.

himself. It has been an up and dance season for him. Fernando

:21:40.:21:52.

Alonso was saying he thinks moving on is great. He has a lot of

:21:53.:21:59.

momentum. There are a lot of sponsors who have links. He is

:21:59.:22:05.

pushing without any question. At the end of the day, it would be

:22:06.:22:13.

quite a big jump. He is racing in GP 3 the DUP that is a perfect

:22:13.:22:17.

platform for him to say, this is me, this is what I am doing was a -- GP

:22:17.:22:24.

3. Do you have a view on this? It is interesting. It will be a

:22:24.:22:44.

back to back between the two drivers. He did a great job at

:22:44.:22:53.

Monaco. They need to see how good he really is before they make a

:22:53.:22:59.

decision. I do not think it is too young. When you bring him in, as

:22:59.:23:02.

long as you are going to give him time to mature, the earlier you get

:23:02.:23:04.

long as you are going to give him hit the better.

:23:04.:23:10.

Another driver has said at the age of 19 he was not ready and it was a

:23:10.:23:17.

mistake to bring him in there. What we have seen has been the Toro

:23:17.:23:25.

Rosso team giving a driver a chance on a Friday morning. I would expect,

:23:25.:23:30.

as they have to put one of the drivers into the team next season,

:23:30.:23:35.

in the closing part of the season, we will possibly see both of them

:23:35.:23:40.

driving on Friday morning. What do you think? I am not sure if we have

:23:40.:23:49.

lost Gary. That chance is pretty high. Fernando Alonso is getting a

:23:50.:23:56.

kiss inside the kerb. He is running through gravel. The chances are

:23:56.:24:03.

pretty high. Danny Ricardo knows he is assured of the Red Bull seat.

:24:03.:24:09.

Red Bull has always been very high - putting pressure on the driver's.

:24:09.:24:14.

Seeing who stands up to it and who brakes. It will be clear to see if

:24:15.:24:23.

they use the same strategy. Fernando Alonso turns in. He turns

:24:23.:24:27.

in two early goals that he will clip the inside kerb. That is the

:24:27.:24:39.

reason he steers the wane. -- -- too early. If you do not do that,

:24:39.:24:48.

you will steer wide and the camber will fall away from you. The tyres

:24:48.:24:55.

are getting tired at the end of the long runs and one or two mistakes

:24:55.:25:03.

are starting to happen. Red Bull one and two. Kimi Raikkonen and

:25:03.:25:10.

Romain Grosjean, identical lap times. Last round of the 97 World

:25:10.:25:15.

Championship, do you remember? Jacque Villeneuve and Michael

:25:15.:25:19.

Schumacher going for the title. It was the race when Schumacher drove

:25:19.:25:27.

into Jacque Villeneuve. All three set identical lap time at the top

:25:27.:25:33.

of the time sheets. He said it first was decided he was in pole

:25:33.:25:38.

position. You do not see that very often. It is pretty unusual to have

:25:38.:25:43.

two identical lap times. That is what we have today. Track

:25:43.:25:51.

temperature still well up. It is 25 past three local time. In the Royal

:25:51.:26:00.

Park, just outside the city of Milan. Niki Lauda, the chairman of

:26:00.:26:04.

the Mercedes Formula One team is still working for German television

:26:04.:26:09.

in giving his opinions on a Saturday and Sunday. He manages to

:26:09.:26:14.

juggle those roles. We saw Rubens Barrichello standing next to a chap

:26:15.:26:19.

with glasses on in the garage. It is the grandson of the great scion

:26:19.:26:27.

of the Fiat dynasty. His brother John is involved with the company.

:26:27.:26:36.

They're all very out there. He is a very out their character. Up Jenson

:26:36.:26:41.

Button in the McLaren. They won last year with Lewis Hamilton.

:26:41.:26:46.

Looking reasonably good for a top 10 qualifying spot. How they will

:26:46.:26:50.

race, we will have to see. Slow but sure progress. We think we have got

:26:51.:26:56.

on top of the problems. Particularly aerodynamic problems.

:26:56.:27:00.

Getting that right is so important before the end of the season. There

:27:00.:27:04.

will be some carry over into next season. A lot of the technology we

:27:04.:27:10.

will see next year it will be quite different. Certainly eight-track

:27:10.:27:15.

Jenson Button has always enjoyed racing on. His team-mate is just in

:27:15.:27:21.

front of him. He will be boys by looking at that provisional

:27:21.:27:27.

calendar for 20 fact -- he will be buoyed by looking at that

:27:27.:27:32.

provisional calendar for 2014. Mexico is the week before the US

:27:32.:27:37.

Grand Prix in Austin. They are working flat out to try to get that

:27:37.:27:42.

circuit ready for next year. What you feel about that? It is great

:27:42.:27:47.

news to be going back to Mexico. There are a heck of a lot of

:27:47.:27:54.

Mexican drivers on the scene. From that point of view, no reason why

:27:54.:27:58.

they should not have the grand prix in the home country. Nigel Mansell

:27:58.:28:02.

was the last winner of the Mexican Grand Prix. That last corner, just

:28:02.:28:08.

the way he attacked through there is unbelievable. He is talking with

:28:08.:28:17.

Filipe Massa. His gearbox broke earlier in the session. He tried to

:28:17.:28:26.

overtake on a high-speed corner and it was a very brave thing to do

:28:26.:28:34.

from Nigel Mansell. He used to do what he wanted and the rest had to

:28:34.:28:36.

fall into line. The president of Ferrari is to here

:28:36.:28:54.

tomorrow. He likes to come on qualifying day. A bit like Enzo

:28:54.:28:59.

Ferrari did. He does not come on race day because he finds it too

:28:59.:29:01.

stressful. He is calling for action race day because he finds it too

:29:01.:29:07.

from his team. He has sent a nice to every member of staff after the

:29:07.:29:12.

Hungarian Grand Prix. Alonso had a bit of a go at the car and he had a

:29:12.:29:17.

go at Alonso. He set a knife to every member of staff. He wants

:29:17.:29:19.

them to put it between their teeth every member of staff. He wants

:29:19.:29:24.

and get on with the work. If they do not get on with their work, they

:29:24.:29:28.

can use it for something else. Looking at the way Ferrari are

:29:28.:29:33.

going to day, they have been more competitive. Following on from

:29:33.:29:48.

their performance in SPAR. -- Spa. Adrian Sutil is getting a

:29:48.:29:57.

slipstream. That is brake dust from the carbon-fibre brakes. That means

:29:57.:30:05.

the high brake wear for the Force India. We are counting down for the

:30:05.:30:10.

chequered flag as Adrian Sutil crosses the line. The brake discs

:30:10.:30:20.

go down many millimetres from the start to the end of the race. They

:30:20.:30:26.

literally wear away. Sebastian Vettel is doing a practice start.

:30:26.:30:31.

He is the getting there is a right hand corner. He is having to go

:30:31.:30:36.

straight on, as a number of drivers have done this afternoon. Helmet

:30:36.:30:41.

Mark Howard, one of the key men who took the decision to put down

:30:41.:30:54.

Daniel Riccardo in the team. Sebastian Vettel is topping the

:30:54.:31:01.

time sheets. Apart from him, it is pretty close.

:31:01.:31:18.

Tomorrow when it comes down to qualifying, it could be a different

:31:18.:31:25.

story. I think it will be a lot closer than what we see there. It

:31:25.:31:32.

needs to be because people need to get on the front row with Vettel if

:31:32.:31:36.

they are going to try to contain him. It is a Red Bull one and two.

:31:36.:31:59.

They are just doing some simulations for Sunday's Grand Prix. It will be

:31:59.:32:09.

interesting to see how the picture shows up tomorrow in qualifying and

:32:09.:32:12.

hopefully we will get similar beautiful conditions to the ones we

:32:12.:32:14.

have had today. It is predicted beautiful conditions to the ones we

:32:14.:32:17.

be hot and sunny tomorrow. You have to come into the pits and

:32:17.:32:31.

brake to a certain speed and so Vettel was practising it because in

:32:31.:32:35.

the race you have to do it as late as possible. I think Vettel is

:32:35.:32:40.

making sure he knows through the barriers, the zigzag section, so if

:32:40.:32:45.

he gets pushed off through the race he knows how to get through it.

:32:45.:32:49.

Michael Schumacher used to practice a lot of things like that, he would

:32:49.:32:54.

drive outside the gravel tracks so that if it happened in the race he

:32:54.:32:59.

knew what to do. Interesting story with Lotus. Same lap times,

:32:59.:33:08.

completely different cars. They have spent £100,000 or even more on Kimi

:33:08.:33:13.

Raikkonen's car, on extending the wheelbase by ten centimetres. They

:33:13.:33:19.

are trying to get the car to be better. But both drivers have gone

:33:19.:33:23.

within 1000th of a second, third and fourth. Maybe it is £100,000

:33:23.:33:30.

unwisely spent! We will have to wait and see. You can get more Formula

:33:30.:33:36.

One tonight if you want to watch the news channel. 6:45pm. Tomorrow

:33:36.:33:47.

morning, free practice three live. These sessions will be repeated

:33:47.:33:51.

before then and I will be back tomorrow on BBC One at ten past 12,

:33:52.:33:56.

where we will have all the news. Gary and the gang will be there as

:33:56.:34:02.

well. Thank you very much for your company. We will catch you tomorrow.

:34:02.:34:02.
