The Canadian Grand Prix - Practice 1 Formula 1

Hello and welcome to the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal. It is

an old one but a good one. The drivers love coming here. It takes

real combination of respect and aggression. What makes it so tough?

It is an old-style circuit, walls all the way around, if you go to the

last chicane where they really have to jump over the kerbs, if you make

it slightly wrong, go into quickly, hit the left-hand curbs too hard,

you are in the wall of champions on the out side. It doesn't allow any

margin for error. Somebody who has tended his Lewis

Hamilton. He has always finished on the podium apart from once and he

has won three times, he has got the space nails.

I think it really suits his driving style. He gets the car into the

corner, turns it quickly, pivots and gets back out and with such short

corners it suits him. It is like a karting style. He feels at home

here. He needs to. Nico Rosberg is just a little bit ahead of him in

the championship after winning in Monte Carlo and he needs to reverse

that trend to get the momentum back in his favour.

It seems like that battle between those two drivers might have

quietened down. It is such a big rivalry, can there be friends and

rivals? I think they can be friends, but

probably after the finish of the season. It is rivalry at the moment.

It has calmed down publicly but inside the heart and stomach and

their minds, it is very clear it is exactly as it was before, because

one of those two will more than likely win this weekend and more

than likely win the World Championships at the end of the year

for stoppages the public side of things they are smiling a bit more.

Nico Rosberg heads the Drivers' Championship four points ahead of

his team-mate and friend, for now, Lewis Hamilton. Fernando Alonso has

half the points of Mercedes have a huge lead in the

Constructors' Championship. Red Bull is second with Ferrari haven't won a

race since the Spanish Grand Prix. Look at the bottom. Marussia, two

points in Monaco, they are ahead not just of Caterham, but also Sauber.

We have Ben Edwards and Tony Duggins. A lot of new parts coming

here for top that brings new hopes. It will be busy.

A lot of those parts need to be tested and see if they work.

We are opposite one of the key corners, the final turn and the wall

of champions. There has been a lot of champions in

there, so named because in 99 game in her, Michael Schumacher, Jacques

Villeneuve, all went in there. That is what we are hoping to see,

not hoping to see, any crashes, but through fractures and indeed during

the race it is or was a place to watch.

little island in the middle. You will go out on track this morning

I will go into the pit lane, it is quite an exciting moment in terms of

seeing what people have got, what they have hopefully got in terms of

performance, and then having that trip out on the circuit. I will go

down to the last chicane to see how they are jumping against the kerbs.

We are getting all set for this first practice session, 90 minutes

of action, hopefully. An extra set of tyres to use in the first session

and hopefully things will give them a chance to take a break for a

moment and see whether it gets more effective. The green light coming on

the end of the pit lane. The first out on circuit here for free

practice in Canada. It looks like it will be a Williams first out.

Felipe Massa comes out. They will be hoping they can get a decent

performance out of the car this weekend. McLaren with their Mercedes

engine power hoping they will be able to do something a little better

than we have seen in recent races. Jenson Button managing to score some

half decent points last time out in Monaco. A difficult time for McLaren

in recent events. Fifth gate, Cruise two. Out of

1010. At ERS check. Nico Rosberg being given some

instructions before heading out. Mercedes expected to dominate once

again. What about the chances of some of their rival teams? We have

to wait and see. Red Bull feeling this will be a tougher call with the

Renault engine power not having that straight-line speed that will be

needed. Ferrari bringing a lot of updates. They are hopeful that both

beneath the engine cover and a few bits on the car, it will improve

their performance. A lot of people are looking at this

race as a Mercedes bonanza. You have got all the straits, the power,

their advantage, you have got the Renault and the Ferrari that have

been struggling in that area. People are coming here thinking this will

be a Mercedes special event. But you have got Daniel Ricciardo, saying it

is a drivers track, there are places you can let things hang out. He is

hopeful it is not to be as big a disaster as some are predicting.

Felipe Massa, Bianchi out on circuit. Kimi Raikonnen. Quite a few

cars on track at the moment. Maldonado just gone out, a few

waiting to come out, Rosberg, Hulkenberg, Hamilton, pot ash. There

is the view back out towards the city of Montreal. It is one of the

most popular venues. A brilliant setting. Parkland on an island in

the middle of the St Lawrence River, Montreal city as a backdrop. There

is Kimi Raikonnen, he gets a little bit out of shape. That is part and

parcel of making a car working ever stop he is getting the car stable

underbraking, getting the power out of the corners.

That is an area he has struggled with, locking, competitive Fernando

Alonso has been losing more time in that area and he is hoping he will

get that sorted. An ongoing process. That yellow colouring you are seeing

on the back wing is the special paint they apply to the cars, you

often see that in first practice, they can get an idea of the airflow

around some of the new parts, quite possibly we know that they have gone

for a lot of engine work this weekend, we gather there is a new

floor on the Ferrari, other error parts that will be tested. Whether

they will be run over the course of the weekend will depend on whether

they perform as they are expected. Kimi Raikonnen brings the Ferrari

back into the pits. It has been a bit of a difficult return to Ferrari

for Kimi Raikonnen. Lacking points compared to his team-mate, looking

result as well, the best of seventh place in the races we have seen so

far. He was heading for a third-place finish in Monaco, but

unfortunate contact with Max Chilton during the safety car period when he

was trying to get himself out of the way of the leaders, and

unfortunately a bit of contact was made and it damaged both their

races. It did. I was talking to him about

that yesterday. It was a case of knowing when to go by, and he had

instructions it was fine to do that, so he looked to do that between the

exit and said Kimi Raikonnen wasn't paying attention. He was sorry, said

he would do the same thing again. The stewards looked at it and said

it was a racing incident, no blame apportioned at all. Max Chilton very

disappointed. Bianchi went on to score the first ever points for

Marussia. The normal installation art has been completed, no

particular worries for the two team-mates. It is battle be joined

once again between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg was what a season

we are seeing, of rivalry between these two drivers. That's from my

how the season has gone. It started off in Melbourne where Hamilton was

on pole position but an early retirement was not the only novelist

Mercedes have had was that Hamilton retirement in a went on to win. Who

we are looking at Kevin Magnussen. First time he has been to this

Canadian Grand Prix circuit. Malaysia was the next round,

Hamilton took pole position, Rosberg qualified third, both of those

initial qualifying sessions were in the damp, Hamilton went on to win,

was but lost time on the first lap then had to battle to make sure he

was second. Red Bull, Daniel Riccardo, he study of the season

very well, he had a podium in a stranger taken away from him through

illegal fuel use but it was a marginal thing that probably didn't

affect the actual performance of the car that much. We have seen some

great performances from him since then.

He has been fabulous. The team were saying yesterday when they took him

on they knew he was quick, they didn't know how quick. Christian

Horner said if you look at the result he has achieved in the first

part of the season you wouldn't have expected that, head of Sebastian

Vettel and the World Championships, they really impressed. I feel sorry

for him losing those 18 points from Melbourne, if he had them he would

have 72 on the board and if they did a big of progress in the second half

of the season he would be in striking distance.

An impressive start but could have been even better. He does love this

circuit. He is looking forward to competing here. He spoke to Lee

yesterday and told her what it takes to be fast here.

It is a bit like Monaco, a lot of street circuits. A lot of modern

circuits with a lot of run-off, you can break ten metres later, if you

miss the corner you go wide and try again the next time or back it off

but street circuits, if you break ten metres later, you end up off the

track and in a wall, pretty much. You have got to have confidence to

hit your mark straightaway. Here there are a lot of curbs, that tends

to throw the car around, you have got to be comfortable with the car

bouncing. Basically feel like you are in control. There is a bit more

going on. The driver can do a bit more, take a bit more risk and get

rewarded, where on some of the tracks it is not the case.

He is enjoying this circuit. He had a penalty here last year, got into

the top ten, but had a minor grid penalty. His best finish, 14. Mark

Webber never really had a great run of results here. One podium in ten

starts, when he finished third in 2010.. Reason the Australian driver

in the Red Bull team doesn't always go well -- for some reason. What is

happening outside Mercedes? Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg have

done their installation laps but as soon as Hamilton's car came in he

jumped out, the seat is out, the engine cover is off, and they are

looking down the left-hand bank area of the engine. A lot of parts in

there, not necessarily purely engine related. Without doubt they have a

problem, they are trying to rectify it.

Not all smooth sailing. A good crowd turning out, always a fantastic

crowd in Canada. The grandstand might not be completely full, it is

just coming up to ten past ten local time. The massively enthusiastic

audience. It is a hugely popular event in the

city. Everybody loves coming here. Yesterday there was talk of a new

deal for Montreal for the next ten years, which is expected to be

announced later today. Christian Horner was asked, what you think

many of the next ten years and he said fine, with a better engine stop

straight in there. That is what bread bowl are looking

for, a bit more straight-line speed. -- Red Bull. Does not have

the performance the Mercedes unit. Great overhead shot over the city.

It is just a few miles from the downtown area but not many of the

team is staying in hotels in the downtown area. A very easy place to

get to. Alan McManus has moved over to the Nico Rosberg side of the

Mercedes garage -- McNish. He is still sitting in the car, done

some checks. They had a guy underneath with a hand-held phone

camera taking pictures of the underneath of the front edge of the

floor, where it all bolts on. Just nipped off. It is an ingenious way

to do it but very quick and easy. Lewis Hamilton's car on the other

side, the cameramen are going nuts around, he is sitting at the back

with the helmet still on. It will not be too long. The engine cover

has been replaced but they are still in and around about the seat area.

It looks as if it will be a shorter time problem as opposed to a long

one, the fact he has to put his helmet on. Nico Rosberg, aiming to

beat Lewis Hamilton as he did in Monaco. It will not be easy as Lewis

Hamilton has an amazing record. We asked what Nico Rosberg has in his

armoury to beat Lewis Hamilton? I have loads in my armoury. We will

see how it goes. What will it take to be quicker than him around here?

What it takes is me to be on top of my game and then it is possible. I

have to make I get everything right, the setup right, get the card to my

liking. Get faster and faster. Breaking will be important. I have

not been 100% happy with the brakes. I will have to try and optimise that

and we will be fine. Lewis Hamilton sitting in the back of his garage.

Interesting comments about the breaking and that he is not 100%

happy with the break? It is key to Lewis Hamilton's success. We were

talking about his karting style. He is very late on the brakes and gets

the car turned. His record here is phenomenal. Fernando Alonso was

nearly half a second off him in qualifying. Heikki Kovalainen in as

well. It is all time gained on the brakes with an aggressive approach.

He will need soon hit the red Button if he is going to beat Lewis this

weekend. Kevin Magnussen is on circuit at a moment. Lee McKenzie,

when she caught up with him yesterday, she asked him why he

always goes so well here? It is like a street circuit a little bit. I

don't know, I don't really have an ancestor you but it seems to click

quite well here. In the past I have always been good on the brakes, and

it is a circuit all about breaking, so it is a bit like a go-kart track.

We spoke to you in molecule and you were talking about your relationship

with Nico Rosberg not being in the best place. I be spoken to him? We

are good now. I caught up with him after the race and I congratulated

him. We had a chat. We have been working with the team to ensure we

are cool and we will be working forward. We have been friends for a

long time and we have had ups and downs. The last race was down moment

for our friendship. If anything, it has made us stronger. We have been

in contact recently and had dinner last night with the team, so we are

good. Alan has more news from the Mercedes garage? It seems to be much

ado about nothing. I asked what the problem was, and they are just doing

normal checks. It was a radio thing. The radio is under the seat in the

Mercedes so they had to get the seats out to rectify that. It seems

it will be in the next five or ten minute they will be back out. Both,

it looks Nico Rosberg will be closer than that. Kevin Magnussen continues

on his way. His father scored his one point in Formula One when he was

striving for the Stuart grand prix team. Kevin Magnussen will want to

get into the top ten this weekend. It has good straight line speed, the

car. They are confident they can deliver more. Thanks for getting in

touch with us on social media. Mike Askin, other than Lewis Hamilton,

who else is known to be good around Montreal? You are to say Sebastian

Vettel. Three pole positions over the last three years, but only one

win. His win last year was the first red wool on this track. The first

when on the North American continent last year? He was saying we have

been competitive for the last three years. In 2012, Lewis beat him on a

different strategy and last year he did win. He said, we are not so bad.

He is another driver suited to this place. Sebastian Vettel will be one

to watch out for. Let's go down to the pits. Alan? There is a lining

here, people trying to do a standing start, to get a feel for it. Once

they are in this position they will go through the procedure and

accelerates. Look at the dust coming from the back of the McLaren. This

circuit is not used very often. That just is all around the circuit so

the first few laps will be used as a cleaning up and then it will get

faster. Kevin Magnussen is fastest. Everybody else has done and

installation lap but not a complete flying lap. Romain Grosjean with the

Lotus. They are not coming in with a lot of confidence. They are worried

about what the performance of the car will be like. They struggled on

slow turns in the final set in Barcelona and also Monaco. Grow Jean

Ross talking about it yesterday and saying the late arrival of this car

over the winter denied them opportunities to put it on the rate

at which does the suspension testing and development work. It has hurt

them this year in getting the car to have a good mechanical grip, which

basically means how the suspension is working. It all translates to

drivability. That is Pastor Maldonado. It all translates into

drivability and the driver not being confident and happy with the car. In

a place like this, it will hurt you. We will have to wait and see.

Another driver who has gone well, Jenson Button, on this circuit. Alan

Stewart has written in saying will Button's previous experience with

Honda help him keep his seat with McLaren next year? He talked about

his future on the five live podcast last night. He is very much one of

the senior members of the Formula One fraternity. Has a good record

here. Had a brilliant win in 2011, but where is he in his head about

next year and staying with McLaren? I get the impression he wants to be

part of that will stop he was saying yesterday it is their fifth year

together. He has a lot of experience, he is young at heart and

is fitter than ever. He wants to be part of that. The racing director at

McLaren said he is a great ambassador for the team. His input

is important and with a new partner in Honda, I can see Jenson Button

staying. That will turn out over this year when people start to talk

about movements. Rosenberg re-signed or Mercedes so there will not be any

changes in the top team at the moment. It is all about which of the

two drivers will come out on top. Kevin Magnussen is fastest from

Maldonado, Max Chilton has done a laugh. Rossi is out as well, he is

the test and development driver for Caterham in Formula One. That was

some interesting noises, some break locking and whistling. Rossi is the

only one in terms of development drivers out this morning. All of the

regular drivers are in their cars I getting in some mileage. We have

just seen Ericsson had a bit of an off at the hairpin. No, it was the

last corner. This is a little bit like Monte Carlo in terms of

confidence and building as the weekend goes on. It is not the kind

of place you would want to miss a session? No, you have to build up to

the tiny fractions of centimetres to the walls on some of the exits to

these corners. Let's see what Nico Hulkenberg has been doing on-board

the Force India. Has been a good season for him. That was a mistake,

his wheel went on the grass. So easy to make a little mistake. Perhaps

distracted. TEAM RADIO: everything OK, Nico?

Just made a mistake. He admitted to his error straightaway. That was

Daniel Ricciardo in the Red Bull, very early to see something like

that! That is one of the places he was talking about yesterday. There

is the boss at Ferrari, overseeing the improvements they are expect in

this weekend. Will it be enough to challenge Mercedes? Frank Williams

keeping an eye on Bottas, who is 11 and Felipe Massa, not a great record

but is fastest at a moment. He has never actually finished on the

podium, his best finish was fourth in 2005 and has never out qualified

team-mate here. We were talking how great this track has been per Lewis

Hamilton, but it is a track some drivers never quite get hold of

Western Mark it is the sort of place if it suits your style you will be

quick year after year. If it is not intrinsic to your driving style, it

is difficult to progress. Talking to Bottas, he was confident coming in

and was hoping it would be potentially a good race for

Williams. They have done some mechanical work. He qualified third.

Hamilton just going down, after turn one. Overcooked the breaking into

the first corner. No problem, carrying straight on. Thermal

imaging cameras so you can see the heat from the car up ahead from the

exhaust pipe area. We are on-board with Romain Grosjean. Ericsson up

ahead of him. Ericsson in the Caterham. He is very much

centralised from the exhaust pipe area. Slide therefore Romain

Grosjean. Last year, they use the exhaust gas to accelerate air

through the lower rear section of the car to get more downforce. Now

they are not allowed to do that. A few moments ago, Fernando Alonso

left the pit bridge. Something odd happened. Alan, what happened? As he

released the crook clutch. It is a paddle. He had to pull it back in

and it was a bit of kangaroo jumping and it took him a few attempts

before he could get the car moving. Mechanics were not sure if he was

going to be able to get it going. Now he is out on the circuit. The

setting was off with just 20 millimetres of travel on the clutch

paddle. Nico Hulkenberg is second-fastest, Felipe Massa, Jenson

Button in fifth. Toro Rosso do have a good record, Verne went well here

last year. He is having his best qualifying up to that stage and

last year. He is having his best best ever result. Lee McKenzie, you

are at Toro Rosso? I am sure they want to repeat that, but number 26

car came in and announced. Daniil Kvyat turned up will stop mechanics

stood there wondering what was going on. It obviously wasn't planned.

They were not expecting him. Either there was a problem with the radio,

or there was a problem with the car. Nobody looks overly concerned but it

was very strange. Let's see what Lewis Hamilton did. Yes, a little

lock on the soft tyre. It is the super soft and soft tyres brought to

Montreal, the same as used in Monaco. Hamilton just testing them

out. Kevin Magnussen doing likewise. Hamilton still fastest, Rosenberg

has gone second quickest now. Virtually matching Hamilton's time.

This was on-board with Vettel, coming down to the last chicane and

he out of it. Found a little exit to avoid the kerb. Bottas had a bit

more of a dramatic line into that corner and locked up the tyre. We

will see a lot of this in practice, they will experiment with the

limits? We saw Alonso have a slide a moment

ago. We are on board with Raikkonen. We had some knocking.

That is interesting. Knocking usually refers to ignition with a

turbo-charged engine, it is something they are trying

desperately not to get. If the data was coming back that they were

getting that from the engine, it is one of the quickest ways to destroy

the engine so they would have made some adjustments. Good to ride on

board with Kimi Raikonnen, gives you a really good view of how hard they

are on the brakes, how much curb they can use three some of these

chicanes, you can see how difficult it is to get the power down

smoothly. Pit lane entry on the left. Decided

to come in. That is a shame we didn't get to see him come through

the final turn. Kimi Raikonnen definitely having the worst of it at

that team at the moment, struggling in terms of pace and having lost a

potential third place in Monaco which would have been a confidence

booster, he has got to pick himself up and see what he can get this

weekend will stop Hamilton, Rosberg, look at the times, they have both

gone quicker again. Was both definitely staying in the hunt

currently. Hulkenberg is fifth. Ferrari are experimenting with a

of field development and back down impact on things like knocking.

There also is of areas, with these new turbo-charged engines.

A massive amount of weight to be done. The fuel they use is still

based on pump fuel. They are not allowed the really exotic blends of

fuel that were allowed in the previous turbo era which used to

make your eyes sting. I can remember going to take some pictures out of a

slow corner and standing there for ten minutes at having tears

streaming down my face, it was evil. Within a window of what they are

allowed, based on pump fuel, there are opportunities to change things

and that is what they are working on so much. Particularly to avoid the

pre-ignition, knocking symptoms that turbo-charged engines produce. They

are producing some pretty amazing results. Rear tyres graining a bit

funny to Hulkenberg. Not a surprise. There is no rubber down. This is not

a truck for the rest of the year. It has got to take a while for the

tyres to settle in. Watching the on-board camera, the thermal image

there, coming back into the pits, on-board Lewis Hamilton's car. The

heat on the disks on the left of the shot, some heat from the radiators,

in the middle that is the sideboard intake will stop locale hot it gets

another is no effort owing through it. All the heat in the radiators

now not being called by the passage of air so you get very hotspots.

They bring the coolers into the brake discs, they put them on the

side pod them. That is the reason, because the build-up of heat, as

soon as the car stops moving, no fans like you have on a red card to

keep the moving once it comes to a stop. Some of your comments coming

in. Henry says Bottas can challenge for best of the rest, do we agree?

We saw in Bahrain in particular where Bottas was very fast, that was

a truck with straight lines, good braking, he was competitive. Force

India were competitive. It could be tough for Red Bull behind this ABC.

There are some people talking about the Mercedes form, McLaren, Force

India, Williams, those eight cars will dominate here. It will be a

case of can Red Bull find ninth? I think there is enough places where

the driver can make a difference on the car, and I don't think they will

be that low-down. They might struggle to get a car on the first

two rows. Williams certainly one of those teams that you would expect to

be challenging. Bottas saying a podium might be on, let's wait and

see. Let's not speak too soon. Just the man to ask joining us from

We have as questions coming in, as to who you might be fighting with

this weekend to a certain extent. You can tell us much more cleanly,

we know this is a track that will be tricky for you, can you challenge

Mercedes and are you keeping an eye on those guys behind Mike Williams,

Force India? Under normal circumstances you would

have to say Mercedes have got to be the favourites. Already they are at

the top of the time sheets with a bit of a margin. In all reality it

will be very tough for us under pressure. Ferrari has supposedly got

an upgrade, in demise. Something like Force India as well, cars are

very efficient on the straight, they will be a factor as well.

Not going to be an easy weekend but we have seen both from Daniel

Riccardo, and Sebastien as well, generally you have been the second

best team this year, includes Bahrain where Daniel Riccardo, he

had a penalty but put in a pick -- quick lap in qualifying. We have

given away a lot of points as well engine reliability issues,

extremely, Monte Carlo we have been on the podium for times this year.

have done, particularly on the power unit side, the others are having to

work in red brick hard -- work incredibly hard to catch up. They

look so it was a turbo failure in Monaco, a fairly spectacular one.

The car wasn't going anywhere after its last pit stop.

We heard from marker after the race saying it was not acceptable, there

was going to be some meetings. Were there?

No table thumping, at the end of the day we won four World Championships

with Renault, every victory we have had has been with Renault engines.

They have had a tough start. They got it wrong. Turned up unrepaired

and behind. They are working hard to try and close that gap down. It is

critical for them. They need to reduce that gap to Mercedes so we

can compete with them. Alan here, just a question, you

mentioned how Force India were looking strong, Ferrari with your

upgrades, what is your target for this weekend?

If we can get in a top five, top six, all things being equal, that is

probably where we will be on pace. As you know, anything can happen.

You have got to be in it to try and hustle in the race, there are other

factors other than just out right one lap pace.

On top of that, finally, what tracks that are coming up are the ones you

guys perhaps are really going to be looking to challenge Mercedes, which

was set that you mark Singapore. Hungary should be right,

Silverstone. The Red Bull ring. We are busy putting a lot of corners

into that circuit. The longer straight will be about 500 metres.

Amazing what you can do in a short space of time.

It is all a little bit quiet on track, we have been through the

first half-hour of running, Hamilton ahead of Rosberg. There is a, Tony.

They've got a big margin. John Eric then, good effort in fourth.

Riccardo is this. Bottas is just ahead of his

team-mate. First ever laps for Magnussen on this track. It will

take him a little while to get up to speed. Rosberg at the moment is at

the top. Where is the first non-Mercedes? It

is a, Eriksson in the catering. -- eighth place. No sign of the Red

Bull cars in there. They tend to not have particularly high speeds, even

in front running pace. The caterer hasn't got much

downforce. -- caterer.

Felipe Massa looks pretty relaxed. He was talking to as yesterday. Had

a little bit of a difficult season in terms of what could have been

expected. Some people were expecting podiums, some were looking at

Williams delivering this year after some promising performances in

testing. Speaking to Lee yesterday, Felipe Massa just explaining on that

factor the season could have delivered some more points.

We missed some points, you know, during the championship, we missed

some opportunities because I had a mistake, because something happened

in the race. We missed some opportunities, some points. We still

can have a chance to score with the amount of points. I hope this is a

race we can score more points in, Felipe Massa, it has been a little

bit of a struggle for him. Valtteri Bottas has demonstrated

some good performance. One non-finish, last time out for him,

or disappointing, in Monaco. That's both his 100% scoring record.

He was saying they traced back down to a Barings failure. -- bearing. He

is looking for a good result this weekend.

the rivalry between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, Lewis Hamilton

saying it is cool between them, and Nico Rosberg is so convincing, not,

it is great to have rivalry. Especially when it is England versus

Germany. Lots of that aspect to it will stop a lot of the drivers being

asked about the World Cup yesterday. Varying degrees of interest in

following the World Cup that is soon to be upon us.

Alonso is quite keen. Jenson Button is taking a casual interest but not

many fanatics. Force India we have mentioned doing

well and the championship, fourth in the Constructors' Championship.

Let's get down to Lee at four in the first -- Force India.

In mine ability's home race but almost your home race? Nearly, I

grew up not far from here in Michigan on the Canadian border.

Nice to be back in North America. Nice to have had such a good season,

fourth in the construction championship. We were third for a

while, now four. Very difficult to maintain the pace we started off

with but we are trying to do that. We should have a good race. We can

hopefully maintain fourth-place Angry Bear 23rd.

To get that podium from Sergio Peres, he is fitting in well to your

team. We certainly like him, he likes the

team. He fitted in quite quickly. Now it seems like he has been here

for years but it has only been a few races. He has got a good chance of a

podium here and said as Nico, they are those Bacharach both very

competent drivers. How do you think your car will go

round here, it shouldn't be too bad. The right engine in the back.

Mercedes have done a great job for us. Traditionally we have gone when

Hill --, well here. But we have run into people, fallen into the trap.

We expect to be competitive at this race, and, like you say, the

powertrain is important and Mercedes have done a good job.

Heading to Silverstone, the team's home Grand Prix, amazing to get a

good result in front of all the fans and the guys that work in the

factory that don't get it onto every race.

Silverstone because we are so close is one where on a Thursday or even

Wednesday, the factory personnel do get a chance to go have a look, some

of them even on Friday if we can rotate it as such. That is our home

race. It will be great if we had a good result here in Austria looking

forward to our home race at Silverstone. Al onto your guys are

back out? Probably another five or ten minutes. Mix in changes and we

will be out of here. Force India, fourth in the championship. A good

result here last year. But it has not always gone well for them but it

was a decent results last season? They have done

to the team. We talk about Bottas not finishing in Monaco, it leaves

three drivers when a 100% finishing record. It will be tough for them to

take the third place in the construct does, because that belongs

to Ferrari at the moment. Updates from Ferrari this weekend. Let's get

back to Alan. I think I will go on the circuit towards the last chicane

to see how they are coming through. The circuit is dirty and we have

seen a lot of dust flying around and that is why the cars are sitting in

the pits. They have a limited amount of tyres so they want to make sure

they use them properly. I will go to see what is happening on the track.

Will be interesting to see what comes up. Into the Ferrari pit. They

are experimenting with different things on the car this weekend so

difficult to get a clear picture. I was talking about Red Bull and we

were talking to Christian Horner. He was telling us about their

expectations. Sebastian Vettel coming into an event he has done

very well at, but coming in knowing he has a car not as competitive, may

be difficult. Lee McKenzie caught up with him yesterday and asked him in

a situation like this do you arrive with less rounds or motivation? --

bounce. Not really. Obviously, Mercedes is very strong. The gap is

too big if you ask us. I'm sure they disagree. But it is the name of the

game. There is always a chance to do well and a chance no matter where

you start on the grid. Your chances are higher when you are in a good

car but I think we have a good package. Not the easiest track for

us this weekend. But there is a chance to win. Sebastian Vettel

always looking for that opportunity. Daniil Kvyat is out in the Toro

Rosso at the moment, another driver learning the circuit. He is new to

Formula One and new to the Montreal track. A lot of them will have spent

some time in the simulator. Ericsson spends a lot of time in the Caterham

simulator to get his eye in, but there is nothing like driving a

truck like this. Just the two cars out at the moment and Magnusson has

just gone out as well. A few drivers and not on the track, including

reserve drivers. We have Alexander Rossi in the Caterham, I reserve

driver. And Giedo van der Garde is talking to Lee McKenzie. You are

desperate to get in the car, but you are speaking to me instead. What is

going on in the garage at the moment last remark we have used the first

30 minutes and now they are changing something in the rear. Both cars

have a different road grime. We brought a big update in Barcelona

but something was not working very well. Now they are testing again to

find a solution. When you have driven at a circuit like this how

frustrating is it you are standing here and not in the car this

weekend? It is tucked sometimes. But it is investment in the future.

Sometimes you have two step back. The aim is to raise next year and so

far it is good. I am happy where I am. It is a great team. I miss the

racing but that's the way it is now. It has been a tough season Mauritius

points than Sabha, what has not gone right with this car? The car seems

to have been OK. Just a few little issues. We are not as competitive as

last year but it is a team who can improve a lot during the season and

we are not where we wanted to be. We were a little bit unlucky in Monaco

were at the two drivers made errors and cost us a lot of points. But we

keep fighting and I am sure we will be back. When will we see you in a

free practice again? Silverstone. He will be doing the test that follows

Silverstone and he has Friday morning sessions from Silverstone

onwards. So getting more time in the car. You have two said the mistake

Gutierrez made in particular, Tony, was fundamental. I went to his press

conference yesterday and you could see how much it chewed him up. It

was an opportunity to score points but it was his mistake? It is always

difficult to deal with. Lee McKenzie made the point that it is crucial

for them to finish in the top ten. They will be hanging onto that by

the skin of their teeth. Caterham had a 11th and 13th in Monaco. It is

that tight. With reliability, you don't see that many opportunities to

score points if you have a car that isn't performing. That top ten is

about millions of pounds of prize money at the end of the day and that

is why it matters so much. And that could mean the difference between

existing and not existing. It does matter those lower teams picked up

points. Alan has found his way onto the track. Kevin Magnussen is coming

down to the last corner, Alan? Walking past the tyre set sitting

out the back from the first half an hour. It looks like they are not

working. The surface of the tyre has had some effect but there is no

depth to it. The cars are struggling to generate the temperature they

will need to get a grip. I think there will be quite a lot of people

coming down the escape road. Caterham just accelerates over the

start and finish line. Watching Daniil Kvyat here. Had to ease off a

break. Had to take the extra bits of asphalt. There are some extra

asphalt run-off areas this year. Hopefully you can run wide and not

end your session. There is one at the top end of the hairpin at ten.

Ericsson, just getting to grips with this circuit. The tyres Alan

mentions and the situation with the Pirelli tyres this year, it isn't

easy for the drivers and teams because Pirelli have gone

conservative for this year. They didn't want the stories to be how

the tyres were giving up. But the other side is it is proving

difficult for the teams and drivers to get these ties to work?

Absolutely, Bottas was a bit reserved when he was asked was this

a great opportunity? It would be great to get Alan to comment on

that, particularly this circuit. Is it a circuit you lose tyre

temperature because you are not working the tyre that often? You

will see it on the thermal imaging, coming down straight, you lose tyre

temperature and then it is in the braking area in the first initial

turn when it builds up again. But the balance changes through the

turns big cars the grip is changing as the tyre heats up and cools down.

They have a harder compound so they struggle to make them work anyway.

Then it is cooler than it was expected to be. When you put it

together with a dusty circuit it suggests a tough morning for

everybody out on track. Lee McKenzie, you can update is about

the temperatures? The track temperature has changed, it has come

down. The wind is ringing in a lot of cloud. It is grey skies and there

are some wind drops. It is meant to look fair for the rest of the

weekend. Saturday looks scorching. Around about 28 degrees. The team

won't want any rain for re-practice because if it is not going to be

like that for the rest of the weekend, it almost renders this

session useless. Looking at Alexander Rossi, had a lock up into

turn ten. And the little one into the last corner. The car is moving

around. He is getting an opportunity to drive, but I am sure it is

feeling different to the car he has been in recently. Alan, I think you

saw him? Yes, he locked up as he turned in and had to correct it. He

was close to the kerbs as the Lotus ran through neatly. McLaren is the

best of the cars out on the circuit. Able to run a lot of speed into the

APEC will stop everybody else is dancing on the throttle as they

accelerate. Read all looks good for the first lap out of the pits. You

say that about McLaren because Magnusson has gone third fastest

recently. When you consider it is his first time at this circuit,

Jenson Button is fifth. On a better lap right now, Jenson Button.

McLaren's confidence not miss placed as they came into this event. This

is a good lap from Jenson Button. Alan, he will be heading to you in a

minute. TEAM RADIO: your tyre temperatures are at the bottom of

the working range, still. Do not do laps which are too cool. That was to

Alexander Rossi at Jenson Button has just been passed you? Yes, he

mounted the kerb on the right-hand side. Also got two wheels onto the

white kerb, which is quite large. The car are absorbed it very well. A

very clean exit from Jenson Button. Looking at Lewis Hamilton. He has

done nine laps in this session. Nico Rosberg has done ten. Waiting to see

them both on the circuit again. The last part of the lap was not so good

for Jenson Button, Vern is sixth, Daniel Riccardi oh coming through

turn two and accelerates to the first of the chicanes. Turns three

and four. first of the chicanes. Turns three

little bit and how the car and suspension absorbs those curves is a

little bit and how the car and factor in tuning a car to be quick

here. You have this decent stretch towards the little bridge. Perhaps a

fraction too deep. Long, sweeping corner. This is where Robert qubits

have an accident in 2007. Everybody watched the accident and could not

believe it when he was OK after it. The following year he came back to

win this grand prix. Romain Grosjean and having a bit of a whinge. He was

in the middle of some other cars. Just following Bianchi down the

straight. Robert qubits are is a big loss to Formula One. He was a

special talent. He is. Rallying again this weekend. Pastor

Maldonado, on-board with him. Let's see if the Lotus is a struggle. He

is 13th quickest the moment. Just building up heat in the tyres at a

moment. Using the brakes on the straight line to builds up the

temperature which helps the tyre bit more. Looking at Sebastian Vettel.

Winner here last year. Three pole positions coming into this event.

Looking very tidy, 10th quickest. On-board with Sebastian Vettel as he

heads towards the hairpin. Grandstands all around. Great place

to look down on the Formula One car. On the power to get on the pace as

quickly as possible. He is heading down to your area, Alan. He comes in

and flicks right and left through the chicane. The good thing about

red wool is the speed it changes direction. The front of the car is

so precise. Then into the left and it allows him to be straight and

quick back onto the throttle. The rear of the car does not look as

stable as the McLaren but the front is much more agile.

But has gone third quickest, both McLaren cars going well. Alonso is

still fifth. A bit of a slide that, he was that in front? It might have

been Jean-Eric Vergne. Got out the way. Having a little look at Bianchi

going very slowly. The car seemed to be vibrating. It doesn't look like

he has got a puncture. Going very slowly indeed. In fact, I think he

is going to have to stop. Trying to see if we can hear anything. He has

hit the wall. He has hit the wall with the right rear. He has knocked

the right rear suspension. That is what you are going to see here.

Probably the Wall of Champions. He is a bit further round. It might be

that only one. That is interesting. Might have been out of turn four.

That is where we saw Riccardo run wide. That was Gutierrez taking a

slightly odd line. Let's see if we can get a replay. Here is Bianchi.

There was the contact. A big fish tail as a result of it afterwards.

The drivers talk about flirting with the walls here, that was a

full-blown affair. A little replay. That was close to hitting the wall.

With these new hybrid That was close to hitting the wall.

will see some fantastic shots like that as we go through the course of

this weekend. Bianchi trying to limp back. That would help the crew get

to work on it before the end of the session. At the lower end of the

order... Look at the vibration as he tries to drive along slowly as

possible. If drives to quickly will damage loads of other parts. It

might be a track rod failure. When he goes round the corner in my be

tricky. That kind of vibration will not be doing" any good. All the

vibration goes through the drive shaft into the box. It will not be

doing anything much good at all. Got to go as slowly as possible, not to

cause further damage. Hamilton and Rosberg, one and two, with over half

an hour to go. Jenson Button, and encouraging third. A very slow

Bianchi limping his car back to the pits. Bianchi is faster than his

team-mate, Chilton. He is faster than Eriksson. What about

Kobayashi? Let's see what time he has achieved so far. He is not

there. Sorry. Alexander Rossi is out. Rossi and Eriksson at the lower

end of the order. Rosberg is about to come past due, Alan.

Coming through. One of the Mercedes just flicking through. When they hit

the kerb, a huge white curb, they are able to jump onto that. The car

absorbs it. We have seen that semi-times when the Mercedes is able

to use curbs more and easier. -- so many times. They are nice and

nimble. The Red Bull is quick on its reaction. The McLaren is good into

the apex. Keeping a good minimum speed.

Rosberg is the speed.

with. He has got faster again. Fastest out right now. Continuing

with another quick lap. The Mercedes has that compliance. Nothing to do

with the power unit, purely down to the first and -- chassis engineers.

Something other engineers could do with their cars if they could make

it work. Here he comes again for that we have got a yellow.

Somebody has missed a chicane. Quite a slow entry. It allows the chassis

engineers, a company package. They don't have a weak point, they have

got strengths in all areas. Without doubt, that compliance is something

that has got a big effect here. That is probably their perfect circuit.

They have got pretty good low speed grip, good compliance over the

kerbs, very good straight-line speed. The circuit is all about

compliance over the kerbs, good top speed.

Gone faster again Hamilton is on a quicker lap. We will see lap times

improve further and further. Looking at the comparison with the first

back to session the last couple of years. Last year was damp when Paolo

di Resta was busted, not merely of relevant time. Before that Hamilton

was quickest. We are a couple of seconds away from that last time. We

are watching the Ferrari crossed the line. That is encouraging. Only two

tenths of a second slower than Nico Rosberg on previous lap. Hamilton

will go quicker than either of them. Riding on board with him as he

crosses the line. He takes a full half a second out of Rosberg's time.

There was Hamilton always quick here. We are almost into one minute

16. A second or half away from couple of years ago. These tyres are

harder. That was Sebastian Vettel almost touching the wall. He has hit

it in the past. Two tenths slower than Fernando Alonso. Which until

Hamilton did his lap was looking quite good but Hamilton has now

raised the bar somewhat. Alonso's time not quite as impressive as it

was a few moments ago. Jenson Button is fifth, Magnussen is in sixth

place. Tax Chilton just a moment ago. Using the escape route. Picking

up the little bit of debris. He hops the kerb, that is not ideal. Most

drivers will try to come down to the end, there is a gap. That doesn't

damage to the floor. Alonso has just improved, and other good lap. This

is really encouraging. That is impressive. Like Red Bull,

they were expecting That is impressive. Like Red Bull,

of the top tracks for them, let's wait and see whether that is an

engine upgrade. They were bringing a big engine

upgrade to this event. Your god to think whatever they have done is

working, you wonder how risky they might go. If you were Ferrari you

might go a bit more risky first even if it ended up being a

non-finisher, got to find some performance from somewhere.

Nothing to lose. Third in the Chemmy chip, so far back. They have got to

try everything. -- in the championship. Bianchi has got his

car back. Let's take a look at the replay of Rosberg. He said it was

breaking that is one area he is not 100% happy with the car. An

interesting comment, it takes several months to break them. What

he was talking about this is Bianchi's hit earlier, that is a

good view of it from the camera mounted in the barrier. They just

found that shot. Making carbon discs is not a process you can do

overnight. He must be talking about changing the discs slightly, not

just the fly by wire. He said it can take five months. It

is difficult. The last year, it was Hamilton wasn't particularly happy.

Nico Rosberg saying he hasn't cracked it.

Looking at a different disc being used. Let's speak to Lee at

Williams. Bad news for Felipe Massa, his car

has developed cares problems, he is out for the rest of the session.

It seems to be matter all the time getting the bad luck at Williams. On

board with Hulkenberg, he is being fastest at the moment for Force

India for stock still sing Jean-Eric Vergne up there in a times. -- still

seeing. Sebastian Vettel is the fastest of the Renault power users.

We ride through turns one and two, stay with him. Three beginners, just

charging up towards the second chicane -- through the gears.

Raikkonen doesn't seem to be the same place Alonso. They could well

be put in different parts on these two cars, that is what they tend to

do on Friday morning. They could begin that things

back-to-back testing. He has been struggling compared to Fernando

right from the start of the year. James Allison said that the gap has

been closing. Raikkonen has some sensitivities with the brakes and

steering which are causing him some issues. They have got to work away

at that, try to get the bottom of it. You would expect this would be

one of the places where it would affect him.

The chance to see the Ferrari through the chicane, any

observations? A very big distance between the two

cars stop Kimi Raikonnen doesn't seem to be very confident on

cars stop Kimi Raikonnen doesn't brakes, the car is doing two or

three different things, as if it was on and off on the way towards the

apex was also extremely close to the grass here on the left-hand side as

he tries to get the car into what worries Alonso on the other side,

just a little bit more composed as if he was a little bit more

confident with it. These two cars are running in different

specifications this morning. They have got a new floor package onto

the Ferrari. Alonso has got it this afternoon, they are going to packet

onto Raikkonen for the second session.

Let's get down to the pit lane, Lee has managed to catch up with

Bianchi. People flirt with the war but that

was a pretty big case. How damaged as the car? Pretty

damaged. I was trying to be the limit. I did that a bit too much. It

is OK. The limit is so fine on this

circuit, particularly for stop what is it like to drive?

It is a bit like Monaco, but kerb is much higher.

You mentioned Monaco, kerb is much higher.

result for yourself, and for the team. Your family have had success

there add well stop a really lovely story for the also great for

Marussia as well. Great for everybody, we did a good

job in Monaco but we have to focus on Montreal.

Have a good weekend. Just referring to the fact his

granduncle, Lucien Bianchi got a podium in Monaco. It seems to be a

great track for the family. He is focused on the rest of his career.

People talk about him as a potential driver for some of the top teams

will stop the question that is coming from Brian Hoskins, saying

we'll Fernando Alonso 's stay at Ferrari until 2016 and beyond, if

not what he would keep dry for -- would he drive for? If he left,

where would he go? Where did he go? Mercedes, supposedly, is tied down.

Red Bull, Sebastian Vettel and Daniel Riccardo impressing weekend,

week out. If the -- Fernando was on the market what would you do? Would

you jettison Daniel Riccardo four Fernando Alonso? What about McLaren

and Honda, with a chase him? He has been there before, there is

history, a bit of bad blood. There is one Dennis back in charge of that

team who Fernando had the stand-off with -- Ron Dennis. It is a bizarre

situation. But the man who many feel is the best driver in the world, and

what are his options? You can find out a bit more about

what is going on in that mind of his because the BBC, on our coverage,

Tom Clarkson has done an interview with him, it will be in our race

build-up from 6:20pm. I do hope you can join us for that. Lewis Hamilton

on track at the moment, you can always catch up with Lewis

Hamilton's thought. He is thinking I have gone into quick! You can catch

up with his thoughts on the BBC website. He does a regular column

which will be up to date. He has just overshot the entrance, that

will put a big flat spot on the tyres, getting quite a vibration

from that. Not ideal as he goes through the rest of the session. He

had just gone fastest in both first and second sectors, but Alonso has

gone quickest of all. The previous lap he did was 117.2. Hamilton was

on to he blew the entrance to the hairpin so he ends up that Alonso is

fastest, Hamilton second. You have got to say Ferrari's pace is a lift

for the team. Mercedes, I think keep something in reserve on Friday. But

this was the lock up, Tony and it went on for a while? Yes, I wonder

if he was getting a vibration. Slow motion makes it look

if he was getting a vibration. Slow Real-time, it was

if he was getting a vibration. Slow a second locked up. You can see some

marking on the right front tyre. We have 20 minutes to go. Bottas

Ontrack in the Williams. Down in 16th place. Massa has some problems

with his car and in 17th and we are unlikely to see him back out. There

he is watching. It has been confirmed he has a KERS related

problem with his car. Magnusson and Button have just gone back out in

the McLarens. Hoping they can get ahead of Sebastian Vettel who is

fourth in the Red Bull. Further down, Hulkenberg and Perez. Vergne

keeping his Renault engine Toro Rosso in amongst them. Good

opportunities, I would say. Raikkonen is doing well. Several

cars coming down the back stretch, Ericsson, Magnusson and Bottas.

Cloud developing overhead. We'll have to see if we stay dry for this

session or if we see some rain falling. Track temperature has

dropped, which is unusual, during the session, even further, down to

24 degrees. We are on-board with Bottas. Flicking through the gears

almost instantly. So much is the power of these hybrid power units.

Keeping it well away from the wall at the moment. He is holding up.

Half a second down at the first split. He hasn't done a lot of laps.

Apart from Massa, he has done fewer laps than anybody else in this

session. A bit out of shape. The rear end stability of Williams has

been a factor this year? He might have the problem he feared, which is

generating heat in the tyres. Which is what he was talking about it

yesterday, getting the tyres into the correct operating temperature

window. It is difficult to get the balance between front and rear.

Jenson Button on circuit at the moment. Felipe Massa studying those

times to see if there is anything he can learn for the second session

this afternoon in Canada. Williams have had some success on this track

in the past. But it is a few years ago since they had a victory. We

have to go back to 2001 when Ralf Schumacher took the win. He also had

a pole position here in 2004. They have had seven wins here at this

circuit, Gilles Villeneuve, the Canadian Grand Prix. Since 1978,

this has been the circuit for the Canadian Grand Prix. Jenson Button,

the lab he just did, 120.8, not particularly quick. Let's see if

this will be more of an attacking lap. Looking neat and tidy for the

moment. Narrow section. A narrow ribbon of tarmac. Absolutely. He was

talking about McLaren's difficult start to the season, but

developments are making progress. He seemed to be much more up beat than

you might imagine. Car is sliding around a bit. Coming up we find Nico

Rosberg. Making sure he gets tight into the apex. John Eric Vergne into

civvies. Only 14 laps completed. That is a bit of a surprise. Daniil

Kvyat is in the pits at the moment. Will be interesting to see if there

has been a problem for the Toro Rosso. We have seen Jean Eric Vergne

setting impressive times but has not scored any point since Australia. It

is not just about a lot, but you have to say in his case coming has

been unfortunate. Ericsson ran wide just a moment ago. Over the grass

and no damage done to the court, as he gets to grips with this circuit.

Caterham, you forget, and maybe we lost it earlier with Marussia

getting their first points, but Ericsson matched Caterham's best

ever result in Monaco. Nobody took any notice of that. I am sure

Swedish people dead, but with Marussia's performance getting in

the points, his point went by the wayside. The most noteworthy thing

said about him was about his crash helmet. He said he had a fantastic

response about using the Ronnie Peterson crash helmet. He came

within just a little bit of getting points. That would have been massive

for him with his debut season with Caterham. Jonathan Foster saying,

what do you think of Daniel Ricciardo running faster this

season? Somebody else is asking will we see Daniel Ricciardo winning this

season before Sebastian Vettel does? He has been very mature about it. He

said when he was paired with Mark Webber, they look at overlays all

the time and he would see Mark Webber was quicker than him setting

speed in the corners. I * there was any pattern against Daniel. He said

it is everywhere. He is admitting he is still not getting what he wants

from the car. We will have two see how he responds. Mark Webber was

always mega at the fast tracks, especially Silverstone, but did not

have a great record here. Sebastian Vettel always performed well here.

Nico Rosberg got held up by Maldonado and had to back out of

what was going to be a reasonably fast lap. These tyres have all done

their best. They have done getting on for 18 or 20 laps in some cases.

They are well past their most efficient. See if he gets a clear

lap this time. Long gap off the power before he is able to

accelerate. That will be the brake balance. The number 51, 52 coming up

on the screen in front of him, he is flicking the break violence between

corners. I was talking to Max Chilton yesterday about how complex

the braking is this year. In the past, you would make small

adjustments, you might be talking to or 3%. But with the different ways

of energy harvesting, recovery and doing it through the brake wire, it

can be 20% shift onto the front. Then it eases off and transfers to

the back. The first few times he was driving, you would get a soft pedal.

You would have a braking effect but like on a road car you would have a

soft pedal which was disconcerting. There are so many ways of tuning it,

but it is very complex. When you come here and you need the break,

this must be one of the most difficult tracks for the drivers to

cope with that. We have seen some examples of drivers overcooking it.

Alan, what are you seeing at turn one? The hairpin right hander, it

has been close coming into it, locking up, especially Caterham.

Caterham ran wide across the grass, bounced over the edge of the circuit

in to turn two as Mercedes was coming out of the pits and there was

very no earlier collision. It shows you how under limit the cars are

with a low downforce. Grosjean sliding around. He has had to

correct a little bit as he comes up through eight and nine. Heads up

towards the top end of the circuit. That was coming out of six and

seven, now he is up at eight and nine. Back of the car does not look

that stable currently. Towards the hairpin he comes now. This is going

to be a tough weekend for Lotus. Grosjean in 16th place. TEAM RADIO:

concentrate on the lift and coast. Lift and coast by Hamilton. It was

always the one where it was a margin bulk, and teams were designed their

fuel tanks around the capacity for a race in Montreal. Most of the teams

are confident they have that cracked. It will not be what we

feared at the start of the year, with cars running out of petrol.

Allen, coming from the world of sports car racing, you know about

lift and coast, presumably we will see that here? Also this circuit has

a lot of safety cars which helps them a little bit. You cannot

necessarily rely on it, you can hope for it but not rely on it. A lot of

long straights and then into slow corners so you can lift up 300

metres before the corner and break the 100 metre mark. That saves fuel.

That is when your lap time lost is least. We have been saying this year

Lewis Hamilton has been able to save fuel versus Nico Rosberg, so

presumably that could have an effect? He could even start with

less fuel in the tank? Just when you said about the radio message to

Lewis Hamilton, coming out of this hairpin, he is in a low gear and

then as he touches the throttle, he shifts up a gear and it uses the

engine to accelerate. By contrast, with Red Bull, they are revving out

of the corner using the engine power to take them out of the corner. That

style could gain you 1% of Euler, be benefit which could equal seconds at

the end of the race by having to take less fuel at the beginning.

Quite early this race weekend, turning up Friday. He was in Monaco.

Natural he would be there. TEAM RADIO: what kind of time should I

should be doing? Target time, 19.8, 19.8. Nico Rosberg was hitting the

target time on lap three. Hamilton, who has just started his run, that

lap was 20.5, but the next lap might be onto the target of 19.8.

Sebastian Vettel putting in a longer run of laps together. Great view in

the background as Vettel beginning to use a little bit more of the

available space now. A corner where he lost the lead to Jenson Button in

that famous 2011 race. He just went a bit too wide and Jenson Button

came through to win the race from being last. It was one of the most

remarkable races. It proved to be the longest, now they have added in

a four hour time limit to a grand prix. I think it will remain that

way. Even Sebastian Vettel finding that getting these tyres to work and

under braking is proving to be difficult. Not straight forward or

your comments, Sonny Patel Askin do you think Alonso could get his

second podium of the year at Canada? There is a chance he will end this

session fast is because they have used the fastest of their tyres.

TEAM RADIO: it is not very grippy at the moment, very low grip. The team

talking to Adrian Sutil saying, make your mind up, what will we do? You

could turn the corner and be in the water, was the message. What about

Alonso, are we encouraged by his pace? I am going to reserve

judgement is, I want to see people on the super-soft with tired pen --

temperature and see what they are capable of. He was fastest in the

second Pratt this session in Monaco. Just a couple of weeks ago. When it

turned into qualifying he qualified fifth on the grid. But there is a

chance he could be leading those behind Mercedes. Perhaps there is an

opportunity for him to get on the podium.

He is still fourth fastest in the session. Alonso fastest. Bottas is

this. Daniel Riccardo had to bow out of the last chicane. He is down in

11th place. Maybe he hasn't been able to put a lap together. You can

see how much kerb he was using on the inside and the exit. Look at

that, my goodness! That was incredibly accurate. Just

millimetres away from the wall. That is what it takes to be quick here.

Just need to lop those top branches off so we can see from the aerial.

Max Chilton is 20th. Bianchi's his car -- Bianchi, his car is still in

the pits. RADIO: charge the car, press reverse. You can do another

lap at speed. The bit of traffic ahead coming of got a good gap

behind. Making sure all the electrical

systems are fully up to charge before putting in another quick lap.

Hamilton, 1.20.9. Whether he got a bit of traffic. A bit more speed to

be found. Watching Kevin Magnussen. A good start for his first

without of Jenson Button. These type of tracks where it is all about

late-breaking. A lot of these youngsters coming up through the

made that brilliant debut in Melbourne, but has just found life a

bit more difficult, but so has Jenson Button. The car hasn't been

there for them. Melbourne was a circuit little bit

like this one. A huge variety of klaxons, the car hasn't been so

well-suited to stop --. Track where the downforce is king,

their Red Bull love, but McLaren struggle on those kind of circuits

this year. Fernando Alonso building up to a lap by the looks of things.

Fastest in the session so far. Down towards the first corner. Pops it

over the inside kerb, a massive amount of Ferrari support here. Huge

numbers of Ferrari fans. They will be cheering their man on.

Great stuff, really beginning to attack the kerbs, as we saw earlier

on. You can also see how easy it is to put a wheel on the grass on the

approach to some of these corners and the exit as well.

Runs close to the white line bringing it up towards the bridge

and ten eight. That is where we have seen one or two people put a wheel

on the grass, no such problems for Alonso. Hard on the power of the

exit, sweeping round now towards the hairpin. Split times looking

reasonable, Magnussen has just improved. Still behind Jenson

Button. Alonso, not his personal best sector times, a reasonably good

lap this. Let's see how it completes, the tyres have done 20

laps. You will not see the fastest lap of the day here, but he has just

had to bail out of the last corner, what a shame. Not able to see what

the ultimate lap time would be. I don't think it would have been any

quicker than his existing best. It looks as though it is end of

session for Lewis Hamilton as the clock ticks away and we are

preparing for the chequered flag to come out. He hasn't ended the

session fastest, of fraction slower than Fernando Alonso. Our Mercedes

keeping something in reserve as we have seen on several occasions cost

Mark --? Adrian Sutil, ran wide. No problems,

just get onto the correct line. Throwing away a chance of putting in

a quick lap. The chequered flag is out, the last few laps are being

completed full the last few laps are being completed. Was Burke on

circuit, he will end third fastest for Mercedes stopped Sebastian

Vettel, fourth fastest. Riccardo improving a little bit towards the

end. He is eighth quickest. He has just improved again. Sixth quickest.

1:18 .4. Alonso struggling a bit for grip on these tyres. He has used

these tyres to their absolute map Sumann. -- maximum. Lewis Hamilton

did 25 laps, Sebastian Vettel the 28. Certainly an oppressive run for

Fernando Alonso to go faster than the Mercedes on this occasion. His

team-mate Kimi Raikonnen was in ninth place and Jean-Eric Vergne

completed the top ten. An interesting session as ever here in

Canada, a few slaps against the wall but generally pretty clear.
