The Monaco Grand Prix - Highlights Formula 1

Previously on Formula One. What was that? Lewis Hamilton takes his

fourth straight win of 2014. This is Formula One, race number six,

Monaco, Monte Carlo. MUSIC: "The Chain" by Fleetwood Mac.

Today we are going to make the perfect Monaco Grand Prix. A classic

dish I love to cook. Preparation is everything. First, we need a good

egg. A sprinkle of drama. A handful of glamour. And a bit of spice will

not hurt this dish. Those rich flavours. You have to be careful not

to overcook it. You have to get it sizzling. It is dependent on good

timing. Bake at 25 degrees for approximately two hours. Not quite

25 degrees but this promises to be special. Welcome to the highlights

of the most famous and prestigious circuit in the world. And we have

some esteemed company. Hello, gentlemen. Sunshine, bastion,

passion, Monaco has been rocking. It always dishes up something special

and it is no exception this year. It is a strong field and looks like an

exciting race. You have won here. What were you like on race morning?

This is the biggest pressure. You are already emotionally tired after

qualifying, putting so much into keeping off the barriers. Come

Sunday, you are more tired than other race tracks. We talked about

the perfect Monaco race earlier. We cannot promise that, but it

yesterday's controversial qualifying was anything to go by, we could be

in for a cracker. Ericsson took too much speed into the corner and

Felipe Massa ended up in the barrier, also. Ericsson gets a

penalty and Felipe Massa has to settle for 16. Daniel K that damaged

his nose but was able to continue. His team-mate was quickest, Vergne,

and it was a case of what if? For Red Bull. Daniel Ricciardo made a

slight error on his quick lap and starts third. It was a controversial

end to qualifying as Nico Rosberg ran off the track, bringing out the

yellow flags which meant Lewis Hamilton hat to abort his lap, which

had been quick enough pole position until that point. Rosberg was

investigated but found not to have breached regulations. That was an

uncharacteristic mistake, but you must be relieved to hold onto pole

position. I thought it was over in that moment. I excused myself to the

team because I thought that was it. I blocked Lewis. Of course, it is a

pity from that side but I am happy it worked out. How disappointed were

you when you saw the yellow flag? I was on pole position. It does not

matter, I should have done it in lap four. Nico said it looked like he

went straight on, have you seen it? I have not, I will look into it when

I get back. Rosberg gets his second pole position. Expect fireworks with

Hamilton alongside. The Red Bull second row will hope to capitalise

on any Mercedes dramas. Jenson Button got caught in traffic

and had to settle for 12th. Sauber had both cars out in Q1. Ericsson's

penalty means that he starts from the pit lane. We have a lot of

expectant fans behind us. Yesterday, Rosberg was cleared of wrongdoing,

but the controversy set tongues wagging. People saying things about

it and the press full of stories about how angry Lewis was and their

relationship compared to the situation with Ayrton Senna and

Alain Prost. We can look again at the incident. It stems from the last

part of qualifying, going to Mirabeau. He locks up the front

wheel and goes down the skate road. We had an incident a few years ago

with Michael Schumacher. The positioning on the front part, he is

at the same angle as the first lap. And still in the same position, he

is not off-line. As he starts to break, he will wobble at the

steering wheel. He is further to the right, which is better for this

corner. But he wobbles and eventually as he gets closer, he has

a lock-up and then goes down the escape road. What he did was go all

the way to the end of the escape road, so there was no chance to have

anybody say he was deliberately blocking the track. What are your

thoughts on it? Do you feel it was a mistake? I think it was a mistake. I

think the wobble with the driver, it is a sign the car is carrying too

much speed. This lap, he was doing seven kilometres an hour quicker

than any of his other laps at that stage. I could not see him doing

anything wrong like that. Lewis was very annoyed about not getting that

Lappin but he said it should have -- his lap in. We can find out more

from Toto Wolff. The stewards cleared Nico of wrong doing, what is

the mood inside the team? It is good. We are 1-2 on the grid and

everybody is happy. What are the drivers like today, happy to see

each other? No, I guess they are not happy to see each other. If he is

your main competitor for the championship, he is not going to be

your best friend. Do you see this race as the defining moment in their

relationship? Every race is a defining moment and there is a long

way to go. It will be adventurous for the rest of the season. Have you

given them any is traction is on the run to Turn 1? You do not need to

give instructions, they know they have two score points. You cannot

allow yourself to crash out. Even if there is heat in the situation, I am

confident you do not need to position it on that. And that is

Nico Rosberg, business as usual for him and concentrating for the race

ahead. Toto Wolff said they did not need to position themselves the Turn

1, but surely you have too. Lewis has made the better start this

season. His focus will be on getting his car on the outside of Nico and

giving him a choice. You either turn in, or give way. Full marks to Toto

Wolff for being honest, not hiding the fact they are being tense within

the team. Will it have implications? I think Nico will move

to the centre of the track. If there is a move by Lewis, it would be a

massive risk. Would he want to take the risk and lose points? I do not

think so. He might settle for second and try to do it on the pit stop. I

see the potential of these two taking each other out. This is now

business. A clutch change overnight for Nico. That is interesting for

him. He needs to find out how that clutch works. It might be a concern

for him. They have to react to the lights. The rest is mechanical and

the rest is human interaction. It will be brilliant to see what they

do. Gentle men, thank you. Play the situation up or down, it could be a

pivotal moment because the championship is so tight. It could

not be any closer. Three points between Nico and Lewis. Hamilton

took the lead last time out in Barcelona.

Red Bull have some hard work to do in the Constructors' Championship.

And there goes Nico onto the grid, which is always packed in Monaco.

What is your game plan? The game plan is ready to go and see what

unfolds. Hopefully, I will get off the line well. Hopefully I get a

good one and race hard and try to stay with the Mercedes. How are you

feeling before your first Monaco Grand Prix? OK. We will do our best

and see where we are at. You are looking strong around the track,

what are your thoughts? I am looking forward to it. The cars in front are

clearly faster. The pace compared to Tara Rosso might be similar. I could

have some clean air -- Toro Rosso. Not the day you hoped for. What can

you do? It is a crazy race and many things can happen. I hope we get an

opportunity to get positions and score points. Keeping out of trouble

at the start is important. Not easy at the start. The race is not easy.

Are you excited? I try not to be. You say there are no team orders,

surely you have some control over what is happening at the first

corner? Are you completely crazy? There are no team orders. The

situation they are in, Lewis, accusing the other one on doing

something stupid. I am interested to see what will happen. The gloves are

off? They are off and if they hit each other at the first corner, they

have a problem with me. 2014 the Monaco Grand Prix, Niki Lauda said

there are no team orders for the Mercedes drivers. Hamilton desperate

for another win and angry he is not in pop is it. Nico Rosberg, he won

here last year and he is in pole position. David and Ben Edwards are

the commentary team. Nico Rosberg, aiming to become the

third driver in 20 years of racing at Monaco to win back-to-back races

and reclaim the championship lead he lost a Hamilton last time out. After

qualifying, Hamilton is fired up to continue his race winning sequence.

There is bad blood developing between the Mercedes team-mates.

There is a problem for Pastor Maldonado getting off the greats.

David, that is a poor start again for the Lotus team. When I pass by,

he was gathered around the back of his car doing a picture with his

mechanics, which I am not sure whether it was an anniversary, but

the party has not started well. Who will be first into the first

corner, that is the big question. We can get some news from Tom Clarkson,

who has been studying data. What is likely to happen? It is very busy in

the pit lane will stop I have celebrities streaming past me, only

in Monaco. Strategy, it is a one-stop race, the super-soft tyres

should get them to Lap 25, may be Lap 30. They wore them put on the

soft tyre and try to get through the race on a one-stop strategy. It is

about what the engineers called situational awareness. There is a

chance of a safety car. The risk of rain is 20%. Pastor Maldonado has

been pushed to the end of the pit lane. Most drivers starting on the

softer tyres. Nico Hulkenberg in 11 has started on

the harder tyres so Force India have a split strategy. Sal bar have split

their strategy, Adrian Sutil on a harder tyre -- Sauber. The thing to

look out for, nobody has done close to 30 laps on these super soft

option tyres so in trying to push it out to the last moment, it will be a

journey into the unknown with this compound. That is the Williams, so

Rosberg and Hamilton on the front row together. Watch out for Fernando

Alonso in fifth. Kimi Raikkonen is sixth. Jean-Eric Vergne is seven.

Nico Hulkenberg is on different tyres. There is a gap where

Maldonado would have been. And we are seeing Ericsson and Pastor

Maldonado ready to take the start of the Monaco grand pre-. -- Grand

Prix. Away we go! Is it Rosberg or Hamilton? Good start by Rosberg.

What is going on behind Daniel Ricciardo. The Ferrari has gone past

and it is Alonso. Daniel Ricciardo losing out at the start. I think it

is Kimi Raikkonen. Up front, no doubt about Nico Rosberg, it it is

Kimi Raikkonen. A great start, getting ahead of Daniel Ricciardo

and Fernando Alonso has lost out. He is normally a fast start. The car

turned around and everybody is trying to avoid it. They have all

made it past. Significant damage to that car, Force India. That is

right, Force India. It is leaking cash it is Nico Hulkenberg or Sergio

Perez. -- it is Nico Hulkenberg. The safety car has been called

straightaway. Drama on the first lap, nothing new at Monaco. Most of

the cars have managed to survive this opening lap. Sergio Perez,

there is too much damage to continue. Rosberg this time did get

that start right. He has wiped off the front wing, the rest of the car

looks all right. It is late in the corner he has had the incident.

Side-by-side with his team-mate. This is from behind, the Sauber

spins Perez around. He hits the nose on the barrier, which car was that?

Is it a McLaren? Sauber. This is the guilty party. Trying to catch up to

the back of Nico Hulkenberg. Ready for the restart in Monaco and

Rosberg will set the pace as they come round Ras Kass. The green light

splashing. -- La Rascasse. Rosberg is chased by his team-mate,

Sebastian Vettel was very slow! He is in trouble! Timmy Reichmann is in

third! Something has gone wrong is in trouble! Timmy Reichmann is in

the restart -- Kimi Raikkonen. Very unusual. Back-up the something to do

with the recovery system. A lot of power -- that could be something. A

wounded car, Sebastian Vettel. Robinson qualifying yesterday with

the electrical Robinson qualifying yesterday with

problems. I cannot see a the display. -- he had problems. -- the

gear display. There is still no power. It is in reset mode. Tom,

this looks more serious than in qualifying. Christian Horner told as

it was costing him maybe 10% of the lap. We can see this is far more

serious. So very bad news for Sebastian Vettel and I work you view

and update as soon as I can. The four times World Champion's

miserable season continues. -- I will give you an update. Nico

Rosberg reads as they come around to complete four laps, a couple behind

safety cars -- reads. This is a 78 lap race. Sebastian Vettel rings up

the rear, it is unlikely he will get back into the race -- rings. He

cannot do anything to get the car on track as he makes his way towards

the pit. Come on, guys! I am sure you are

trying everything. Even in one conversation, you can

hear the frustration and the fact that he knows how hard the team is

working. You saw the mechanic walking away with the victory sign,

he is telling the start and it is in position to allow the car to be

restarted. He is still in the pit box so he is not rejoining. Hamilton

is putting the pressure on Rosberg. That section into the first part is

what Hamilton has been focused on this weekend and that entry, you can

carry speed. He has been particularly aiming to increase the

speed. It might have been an overtaking opportunity. This will be

working Hamilton town -- Hamilton's tyres car. He will be coming out in

front of the race leaders in time to get blue flags. Look out for Kimi

Raikkonen passing him. The pit lane for safety rejoins the circuit on

the inside of Saints to vote. -- St Devote Corner. It is not getting any

better. The two Mercedes pulling away from Kimi Raikkonen in third,

Alonso is there. -- is in fifth. Jenson Button is in 10th place.

Felipe Massa is 12. Gutierrez ahead of Kamui Kobayashi. So he reads the

group of Marussia, in 14th, a good position for a Caterham so early in

the race. An opportunity for Marussia and Caterham to score a

significant result. On board with Hamilton here. He has to drop back

slightly as he goes through. He is struggling. I did wonder if it was a

McLaren, it was Jenson Button on the opening lap. Jenson Button, I think

you definitely did pit Perez round but whether the stewards feel it

could have been avoided remains to be seen. Back to this battle out

front, Rosberg is in prime position regarding track position and the

view of the road ahead. It is difficult to follow another car

closely because you look at the driver's head and you cannot see

over the barrier to where you want so there is uncertainty. The lower

speed corners is where Lewis will bond shop, expect to see him doing

that into the chicane and he has to drop back -- he will bulge up.

Rosberg was in this situation recently, fending off all

challenges. Hamilton dropped back partly because of a safety car. He

has got more gears now, Sebastian Vettel. Sebastian, retire the car,

ringgit act to the pits. -- ringed it back. He is doing exactly that.

He responds immediately. -- bring it back. It is all over for Sebastian

Vettel, his second non-finish of the season, like Hamilton, he retired

early in the Australian Grand Prix with power unit problems and it is

an electrical problem that has affected him again. This new era of

Formula 1 with these hybrid engines, they have been very reliable, they

have not been causing as many retirements as we expected, but this

is a significant retirement. Sebastian Vettel is out of the

Monaco Grand Prix of 2014. There is a move on Romain Grosjean by the

cell block of Adrian Sutil. That is at Mirabeau. He had no choice. He is

out. In the pit lane. He was running solid top ten. A shame, he did a

great job in his first time to Monaco apart from the first part of

qualifying. It is turning into more of a race of attrition than we have

seen so far this year. Kamui Kobayashi is in 13th position now so

that is an opportunity. That is the best finish we have seen from

Marussia or Caterham this year and Sauber have not scored points,

Gutierrez one edition ahead of Kamui Kobayashi. Daniel Ricciardo goes

fastest in the last sector. That is something he owned through practice

and qualifying, Red Bull performing well on that section. I wonder if

Lewis is strategically dropping back to cool his brakes? This is another

pass. Down the inside, he likes that move. Adrian Sutil. Unlike Rosberg,

he manages to make the corner and he dives down the inside. Ericsson

thinks of coming in but no choice but to let him through, a good pass.

I feel my rear is going. OK, copy that. That is interesting, this is

uncharted territory because nobody did a decent length run in practice

on these super-soft tyres. Tom, this is interesting. Yes, I wonder if it

is the 11 degrees track temperature, cooler than yesterday. That was the

only opportunity the teams had to run the super-soft tyres because on

Thursday, it was wet and they did not get to run it. It is a case of

waiting to see. I am noticing in the pit lane a constant smell of brakes.

I am between the Toro Rosso and Williams garages and the new chicane

is below me. In the three practice sessions, I have never noticed the

smell of brakes but I am smelling it this afternoon. I guess the amount

of Rob at the track is possible -- the amount of Rob are on the track,

that is giving the smell. They have not had as much free practice

because of the weather conditions, but lower energy going into the

brakes, a lock-up from Rosberg. That was the safe corner where he went

off in qualifying. We have heard a message that Lewis... What is

happening? My engine is getting slower. His engine is getting

slower. We also heard his response to what he mentioned earlier about

his rear tyres. The engineer telling him there still cars, we need is to

push this stint a bit longer. Nico goes up the front left and he gets

out of the brakes and he manages to make the apex. To be clear, I do not

think he did deliberately go down the escape road but it is entirely

possible he could have made that decision and the fact he is able to

make the corner while making a mistake shows it is possible. Those

who think he did it deliberately, that will add to the confirmation.

Marcus Ericsson in the Caterham being chased by Romain Grosjean who

made an early pit stop. Marcus Ericsson with a distinctive blue

crash helmet. That is in deference to Ronnie Peterson who won here 40

years ago in 1974, one of the great Swedish Formula 1 dry dish --

drivers. Never won the World Championship but was a superstar and

it is nice to see Ericsson honouring that. He is under pressure. There is

a five second penalty for Jules Bianchi and Max Chilton. And Esteban

Gutierrez. This is an opportunity now for Caterham to get their best

result of the year, a huge story. A five second stop and go will be

taken at the pit stop. That is the new regulation so that is not as bad

as the old drives -- drive-through penalty which can still be imposed

but it will cost them dear in their race with Caterham.

We just saw some debris. Which of the Saubers is it? The front left

has folded back into the car. A famous Brazilian pop artist has done

design schemes on the helmet that Adrian Sutil. That was the charity.

He lost the rear to the inside of the circuit. He locks the rear

Accel, corrects it and then loses the car. There was so much momentum

when he corrected the car. He rattled the barrier. Still trying to

control the car, despite having no steering on the front left. Sensibly

keeping his foot off the brake. The safety car is deployed. The pit lane

will be busy. It is a crucial time. Will they double stack the cars?

They have to slow down, even though they are not behind the safety car.

They have two drive at a certain speed. That speed is displayed on

their dashboard. I am trying to see if there was any way Nico or Lewis

could shorten the circuit while driving at slow speed and not

received penalty. We'll Mercedes stack the cars? Surely it is the

right time to stop. Some of these guys have five second penalties. The

Marussia, it cannot touch the car... If they stack the cars with 20 guys

available, Lewis would be at a disadvantage, they would have to

bring out a number set of tyres. He came to late. He lost time coming

in. He was held. A red light, a car was coming past. He will be able to

take up his position behind Nico. Does he have traffic? He last time

in assembler circumstance this time last year -- he lost time in a

similar circumstance. Grosjean will have to drop back. We have a number

of cars in the pits. The Mercedes taking the opportunity to come in.

Jean-Eric Vergne said on his way. That was -- sent. There was no doubt

they will be penalised for that. There is no question he would have

seen the red light. The McLaren was in its zone to make a stop. Quick

reaction from the crew in the following box. The Williams guy just

managed to step back enough. That could have been frightening. The

safety car is dealing with the accident of Adrian Sutil. RADIO:

What is the reason you did not box before? That was interesting, what

was the reason they did not box the lack before. Maybe the crash had

already happened. Maybe he was asking why they did not do it in the

delay between the crash and the safety car coming out. We have the

advantage of being able to watch everything and they can only see

what is going on from their small aperture in the crash helmet. It

will take awhile to sort this out. At this. Released. He was not

looking. You look at the lights changing in the pit stop box. The

issue is not with the driver, it is whoever is the man who is in

control. They have an override switch. RADIO: I cannot believe we

just had to pit. What is the next option I have? Lewis, this will be a

race to the end. He was looking for an opportunity around the pit stop

of closing the gap and the safety car has taken that away. He knows

it. That is why the frustration is coming through. Nico also knows that

and he now just has to keep out of trouble until the end of the race.

Felipe Massa, we need to check his position. He did not come in. The

only one who did not follow the general line of thought, Felipe

Massa. He is in sixth place. He has not stopped. He is on the tyres he

started the race on. Maybe they hope they will get another safety car in

a race. They are trying something different. We believe Vergne will

have a penalty. RADIO: I should have hit it on that lap. Why did you not

pull me in, guys? Remember Australia. Jenson Button realised

there would be a safety car and went into the pits at the key moment.

Lewis is blaming the team, but he is blaming himself a little bit,

perhaps he saw an opportunity. That is as much an open conversation to

himself, he is aware of the needs to have your team on side and that you

win and lose together. Kimi Raikkonen in the pits. There must be

a problem. He was running in a solid third place. I did not see the tyres

change. I was watching them cleaning the front wing. Did they notice they

were getting bad information on aerodynamic performance as well as

taking another set of tyres? Do you think they put him on the wrong set

of wheels, something strange like that? We will try to find out. It

had an impact. It brings Ricciardo into third place. And Alonso is in

fourth position. The Red Bull is showing good pace this weekend. I

would think Ricciardo would be delighted to nip at Hamilton's

heels. This is Adrian Sutil. You can see how quickly the car went when he

hit the brakes. He is not the first to end up in the escape road from

that sort of incident. One of the drama is at the beginning was that

we lost Sebastian Vettel from third position.

We could hear the ocean from starting with, come on, guys, too, I

am sure you are doing everything you can. It is disappointing. I had a

good start. We lost pressure from the turbo and so had no power and

had to retire. I am sure they did everything, as I said. I feel

helpless in the car. I do not know what is the problem. I hoped they

would have an answer, but they did not have won today. What do you do

now, do you sit and watch this, or do you escape somewhere? I will try

to get back home as soon as I can probably. The safety car will be

coming in at the end of this lap and we will be going racing once again.

Adrian Sutil crashed out, which brought the safety car and we saw

pit stops as a result. The Mercedes cars stacked in the pit lane.

Hamilton not happy and almost running into the back of his

team-mate as they get ready for the restart. We have seen a problem for

Kimi Raikkonen who made an extra pit stop which drops him down to 13th

place. The race gets under way again. Rosberg challenged by

Hamilton and with Daniel Ricciardo chasing them. The Red Bull has shown

pace this weekend. The car can be seen sliding around. There will be

optimal temperature and pressure. Nico gets safely through the first

turn. It looks like everybody is successfully making their way

through. Felipe Massa is in fifth, because he did not stop. He is on

the original starting set of tyres. Williams throwing a gamble. He was

unlucky yesterday when he was crashed out on Mirabeau in

qualifying by Marcus Ericsson. Kevin Magnussen is in sixth. An incident

in the pit lane being investigated and we wonder if he will get a

drive-through penalty. That was a move up the inside. That was

Magnusson. And that was on Vergne. It was a great move up the inside.

Surprisingly get away with it. He did it. Tom. Hulkenberg trying to

make a move on Vergne. The McLaren of Magnusson, he has got past

Magnusson. That was a great believer. I do not think I have seen

anybody overtake there. Magnusson, he was ahead of Vergne and then he

is under attack from Nico Hulkenberg. Squeezing through at 48.

This is a crucial middle phase of the race. Vergne, coming through

Casino Square, and where is Jenson Button? Just coming over the rise.

Vergne has a drive-through penalty for unsafe release. No surprise. The

mechanism to release the red light into green and tell the driver it is

safe to go can be overridden by a senior member of the team and

whether they did not see the McLaren, or took the judgement.

Normally they have a marker that shows them that if the car has gone

past the marker, they are not allowed to release the car. It was

massively ignored in that situation. Toro Rosso have finished in the top

ten in every Grand Prix except one. Vergne missed out a couple of years

ago when he had to change tyres at the end of the Grand Prix, when he

was running top ten. And another contacts between the Marussia and

cater. Bianchi getting past Kobayashi. He is part of the Ferrari

young drivers. Bianchi saw the car passing and wanted some as well. We

will see a replay. Raikkonen and Kobayashi. Going off in the braking

zone. He makes the chicane, but Kobayashi doesn't. RADIO: Nico, it

will be critical if you do not use longer gears. I wonder if Hamilton

is being told the same. They have started with less than the 100

kilograms they are allowed. I had started with less than the 100

rough figure from the team that they would start with 83 kilograms, 17%

less than they are allowed. We have seen Lewis has been able to save

more fuel than Lee -- van Nico. -- more fuel van Nico. The way to save

fuel is to lift out of the throttle at high speed. Sometimes it can be

unsettling for the driver to have the dead phase from lifting the

throttle and applying the brakes. That information could be crucial

for the speed that Lewis can maintain as we get into the closing

stages. It adds another element to the confrontation between the

team-mates at Mercedes. Rosberg has the controlling position. Perhaps

Hamilton using less fuel. It is incredible, off the back of

qualifying, looking at the media in the UK, they latched onto this

battle, this increasing rivalry and wedge becoming between these old

friends. Ten out of ten for holding onto that. Max Chilton almost ended

his remarkable finishing record. Felipe Massa coming in. 45 laps on

his first set of super-soft tyres. Impressive. Where will he come out?

Will he be in front of Bianchi? Will Bianchi be able to move to 11th

position? Bianchi going through the final corner.

It looks like Felipe Massa gets out ahead of the Marussia. Yes, he does.

Bianchi, he is still in 12th place. Felipe Massa is outside the points,

but only one position outside. A couple of seconds behind Kimi

Raikkonen, who he will try to catch up to. He is on fresh tyres, as

well. Max Chilton and Kamui Kobayashi up the road. Hamilton is

very close behind. Lewis and Nico moving a closely into

T1 and T2, carry more speed into T3. That is the fuel saving he has been

requested to do, traffic is out of the way as they run down to

Mirabeau. Lewis will know what that is telling him, if he can get

close, there could be an opportunity. He will be saving more

fuels so he will not have to do so much. Slow motion action of the

leader, Nico Rosberg. As he comes through the swimming pool section.

Hamilton chasing. That is when they were a bit closer. That -- the race

is still on between the Mercedes team-mates and we are on lap 52 of

78. Rosberg has been in control from the start, he got off from the pole

position perfectly into the first corner and Sebastian Vettel made a

good start to move into third. A mistake by Jean-Eric Vergne, a year

over shot the chicane. Smoke from the back of his car, there could be

problems for Jean-Eric Vergne, definitely in trouble. He is on his

Rosso. I do not think there is oil on the ground but the engine is not

right. It is retirement for the other Toro restaurant Jean-Eric

Vergne, both cars out this race. Daniil Kvyat out early on, it it is

another non-finish, he has had a sequence of them this year. -- it

is. Mechanical failure it did not sound happy that he did not sound

happy. A lot of frustration. This group are together. Valtteri

Bottas is struggling for pace and he has been closed. Four cars fighting

for eight position and you wonder if this will last. Valtteri Bottas must

have an issue, let's see what his lap time is. They all up behind.

This time around, 25 .8, so a major issue for that Williams. Is there a

recovery issue? Seems strange on the soft tyres. Gutierrez had a real go.

He cut the chicane, surely he has to cut that she has to give the place

back? Yes, the rules are clear. Valtteri Bottas still could have

made a corner, he chose to miss it completely. So he will get a

message. He is completely. So he will get a

stops the car on the exit so any penalties irrelevant now. They have

Romain Grosjean. Interesting again. We did see Williams to 40 laps early

on in this race on these tyres and the car is lighter. It has burned

off some of the fuel from Felipe Massa, so it is achievable depending

on how much pace he has got. He has to get 53 laps out of these tyres

from the moment he puts them on to see the chequered flag. They will be

extremely tired tyres! Significantly further than Pirelli would predict.

We think he will get a penalty at the end of the race, a five second

penalty, so keep up with Kimi Raikkonen. And an incident involving

Jules Bianchi under investigation. They say the team may be served a

five second penalty when the safety car is deployed. That penalty is

meant to be deployed at a pit stop but not when the safety car is out.

If they took the penalty, which they obviously did, they only had the one

pit stop. Suddenly, suddenly, it is looking much worse for Jules Bianchi

and Marussia. I wonder if they can work out if it is better to

negotiate with the director to see if they can serve another penalty or

if it is better to have the penalty applied after the race? That is

tough. If that was going to be the only pit stop, they could serve the

penalty but the rules say you cannot serve that five second penalty under

safety car. That is a problem with the system wedge Ivers will try to

do one stop, it becomes more than a five second penalty -- whether

drivers. -- were the drivers. I would say, how do the team managers

and those who write the rules allow that to happen? If you have done

your pit stops, there is an option because they add time to your

overall race times so if you have no more pit stops, they can at the time

and we get and not date at the end of the Grand Prix. That is how they

pit stop, it is because he had a puncture after he was hit by Max

Chilton. That is what dropped him from third and he is ninth now. It

has not come together well for Kimi Raikkonen on his return to the

roaring. He is in ninth place. A spin. That is good she areas. That

looks like the rear tyre -- that is Esteban Gutierrez. Facing the wrong

way at La Rascasse and dropping out of the points. He clashed with the

barrier. Fatigue got the better of him and he turned to early. The end

of an opportunity for Sauber. He has brought Jules Bianchi into 10th

place. But we believe he will have to serve another penalty. Marussia

for their first ever points in Formula 1, they will be denied that.

This is the battle for fit between Nico Hulkenberg. Force India ahead

of the McLaren -- for fifth race. -- place. We saw that move early on by

Kevin Magnussen and he may have had to give a place back under safety

car conditions and since then he has been following Nico Hulkenberg. Nico

Hulkenberg is struggling. Last time around, Kevin Magnussen was faster

and that is allowing Jenson Button to close up. Rosberg is ahead of

Lewis Hamilton. The five second stop and go penalty... They have given

him a five second stop and go and there will not the another pit stop

as long as he can... What is going on here? Has Hamilton got a problem?

Mercedes are ready for a pit stop. Lewis, it get back to us, let us

know what is happening. -- get back. I cannot see on my left. I cannot

see out of my left eye, it is impossible. That is nasty, he has

got something in his eye and he is struggling to see. That is so

unusual. Your visor is supposed to be sealed but I used to have mine

open slightly around the circuit to allow air into the cockpit and to

cool you down so if he has macro to, he is massively dropping off. --

debris. Lewis Hamilton, his last lap was quite slow and this is very

similar. He is adapting to driving with one eye, I do not know what is

going on. I suppose by blinking massively! You have a glove on so

who you do not want to poke your eye. Is it a bit of mind games Mr

Mark Hamilton will deal with that and Daniel Ricciardo will try to

take advantage -- and Hamilton. He blocks Ricciardo at the apex so he

has lost momentum and allowed Rosberg leading space. More traffic

ahead, all over the back of Kevin Magnussen. Hamilton is struggling,

no doubt. Blue lights flashing as the slower cars are told to get out

of the way. Kevin Magnussen making and manoeuvre but he does not change

position -- a manoeuvre. That was the two McLaren cars. Button is in

sixth place. That was pretty impressive. Hamilton is trying to

get past him, what a time for Jenson Button! So difficult to let them

through Holland -- and he has picked up so much debris on his tyres. We

will have to see how Button achieved it. For Vari out on the inside! They

are stuck, Kimi Raikkonen and Kevin Magnussen stuck on the corner in

that battle for seven place, this could help Jules Bianchi because it

might be an opportunity. Are they still stop? They have got moving.

Daniel Ricciardo gets closer -- still stop. This Monaco Grand Prix

is coming alive in the closing stages, relentless pressure from

Hamilton in the early stages on Rosberg but now Hamilton is under

pressure from Daniel Ricciardo. Ricciardo has been supreme here in

qualifying and in the race in this last sector, expect him to close up

on the gearbox of Hamilton. The Red Bull is flying. It has looked after

its tyres better. Hamilton is having to fight to stay in second position

and Rosberg is heading for the championship lead today. If he loses

this place, vital points going to Rosberg. Four laps to go and

Ricciardo can sense an opportunity to get his best result in Formula

1. That is a second-place finish. Jenson Button in sixth place. Nico

Hulkenberg will be next to try and overtake. Damage to the car. No

change. That brings Jules Bianchi into eighth place and he will have a

penalty to drop him behind Romain Grosjean, but there is a transfer

Jules Bianchi to score points today. Stories at the top and bottom of the

field. Hamilton fighting off Ricciardo. Nico Hulkenberg in fifth

position. You can see behind the McLaren will try to take advantage.

I wonder if Button can do anything! Right behind the Force India.

Michael Holcombe Burke has established his position in front of

the McLaren. -- Nico Hulkenberg. Nico Hulkenberg has no grip compared

to McLaren. He made the pass. Magnusson gave him

space. He ran out of space against the tyre barriers. They will

investigate that incident after. We will find out after the race whether

action is taken. Rosberg has this one if the car continues to hold

together. Hamilton has not got second place in the bag because

Ricciardo is tucked in behind him, after a beautifully driven race. He

has paced himself superbly. The car is working brilliantly in the

closing stages. Around 20 seconds, the gap over Alonso in fourth.

Hulkenberg is fifth, but hounded by Jenson Button. Felipe Massa in

seventh and Bianchi in eighth place. 1.2 seconds ahead of Romain

Grosjean. More than the five seconds margin he needs ahead of Magnusson

and he could score Marussia's first ever points in Formula One.

Ricciardo, so close. Is there an opportunity? DRS is available but it

makes little difference at Monaco. The pressure is on Lewis Hamilton.

We have seen races so many times like this, with the tiniest mistake

deciding the outcome. Not likely into Mirabeau, to have a go. Too far

back. The leader has lapped everybody up to fourth place. Only

the top four cars running on the same lap. Nico Rosberg is in command

and looking for back-to-back victories at this track. Can

Hamilton hold on to second? He will lose the championship lead today. He

will not want to lose the points in second place. Another twitch from

the Red Bull of Ricciardo, as he chases down Hamilton. This is

fantastic racing. We have seen some good Grands Prix this year. We know

it is hard to overtake in Monaco. He is tough when it comes to racing. He

gives no quarter. He will go for it, given a chance. Nico Rosberg has

driven superbly today. He withstood pressure from the team-mate and he

is heading for back-to-back wins at Monaco. Ayrton Senna in 1991 was the

last man to do that. He has managed to ruffle the feathers of Lewis

Hamilton this weekend, who will be under pressure as they approach the

chicane. Ricciardo will be looking for a great drive off this turn.

Rosberg knows the road so well, he went to school along these roads and

he won the race last year, a major achievement for Nico Rosberg to win

for the first time. Brilliantly driven. It looks like he will make

two out of two. Nico Rosberg wins the Monaco Grand Prix. Acta back

victories in the principality, and only the third time it has been done

in 20 years. Lewis Hamilton, second, and losing the championship lead. He

remains in touch with his team-mate. Ricciardo a fighting third for Red

Bull. Fernando Alonso, always consistent, always reliable. Simply

the car is not fast enough at this point. 13 starts at Monaco and only

two non-finishes. Again, a brilliant performance, but the Ferrari needs

more speed. Nico Rosberg has row at Monaco and beaten Hamilton in a

straight fight. RADIO: Well done, Nico. Pick up rubber. Excellent

job. Lewis finished second and Ricciardo a close third. A good job.

Well done. Yes! Thank you very much, everybody. Really amazing,

this card, really amazing. Rosberg takes the victory ahead of Lewis

Hamilton. Daniel Ricciardo a fighting third and Alonso holding on

for fourth. Jenson Button in six position ahead of Felipe Massa and

Romain Grosjean taking eighth in the Lotus, despite a different

strategy. Bianchi has the penalty applied, which drops him act minds,

but in the points for the first time for the Marussia team.

There is Lewis Hamilton. It was a tough race. We will get to hear

about the problems he had. Rosberg, he will celebrate the moment. 12

months after doing it for the first time, he is a back-to-back winner in

Monaco. And you can hear the reaction from the pit crew, as well.

The rivalry is so intense on both sides of the garage. I am sure the

debrief afterwards will be a quiet affair, but Rosberg has done it.

Hamilton will have to wait a little longer for a second win in Monaco.

2008, he took one of his most brilliant victories in Formula One,

winning from third place on the grid. Pole position is always an

advantage when it is a dry and straightforward Grand Prix. The

timing of the safety car gave him no opportunity to see what he could do

in passing his team-mate. Jules Bianchi has finished in eighth place

with a penalty and he drops back to ninth, but Marussia have scored

their first ever points in Formula One. While the story is at the top

of Nico Rosberg taking the championship lead and Ricciardo

getting his first podium in Monaco, Jules Bianchi, the lad just from

down the road in Nice. He gets the points, first ever points the

Marussia. What a day it will be for them. A French driver scoring that

result. Marussia, the party will go on for ever. It is time now for the

podium celebrations. Unique podium celebrations in Monaco. Lewis

Hamilton, not smiling much. Rosberg, up to the Royal box to receive his

trophy. He receives it from Prince Albert. He is a huge and easy asked

for the sport and for the event. And for Nico Rosberg, deja vu. He was

here last year. What a time to deliver. The way the championship

battle is bubbling away, he could not want four more, and you could

not want four more from a neutral point of view. It is fascinating to

watch the pressure building. It is resting war on Nico eco-'s shoulders

now, after qualifying. And now today it sits more with Lewis. Lewis more

vocal in his frustration. We are used to that. He wears his heart on

his sleeve. Nico has been a cool cucumber and he has delivered.

Daniel Ricciardo in third place for two Grands Prix in succession. It is

time for him to celebrate. Rosberg uses his home race to bounce back

into the championship lead. The rivalry from their younger days is

rekindled. The rivalry between Hamilton and Rosberg is truly

alight. Congratulations. We almost lost the

cameraman! The first man to win this back-to-back leading all that since

Ayrton Senna in 1990. Putting that to one side, you have done this

before, there was controversy going into the Grand Prix. How did you

focus on the job? What is written in the media I do not follow. That is

one side. The only thing that was awkward was I went to the stewards

because they wanted to look at it. But it was quickly forgotten. It was

a strange moment. Your mind was on the start. Two safety car restarts,

you managed them well. Did you feel under pressure from your team-mate?

It was a tough race and he was going for it. The most difficult moment

was in the middle when I suddenly had to save fuel and I had to change

my driving style and use two gears higher at some corners, which was

tough. It ruined my rhythm. It was difficult. After that, it was OK.

And your relationship good with your team-mate? It is an intense battle

between us. The advantage we have is we have known each other since so

long and there will always be difficulties, but what we'd do well

is we speak about them and move on. Congratulations, enjoy the party.

An interesting interview. It was a great chat and he was vociferous

about not reading the press and trying to move on. If he does not

read the press, he is told about it and he knows there is that in the

team. He wants to get rid of that. He dismissed it quickly. There is

aggravation between himself and Lewis Hamilton and that will not

change this season. If he had not won here, would the championship

slipped towards Lewis? I think if Lewis had beaten him here,

psychologically, it would have been the end of the championship and

there would be no way back for him if he had not won.

Second place today. Valuable points. Describe your emotions at the

moment. I feel OK. I am looking forward to seeing my family and

being with Nicole. I will enjoy the evening and go jet skiing. I think I

did myself proud today. I will get myself ready for the next race. It

was scary hearing about your eye on team radio. I thought I was going to

crash. I have never driven with one eye. And tearing around the track

when you are so close to barriers, it is the hardest thing will stop it

was a learning experience. You seemed disappointed yesterday and

you seem disappointed today. Why are you so down at the moment, what is

making you feel upset about things because that is how you come

across? Um... It is not something I want to go into. Nothing can come

good of what I might or might not say. I am proud of the team for what

they have done and I am proud we have got a 1-to forbid team. You

have been friends with Nico for a long time, what is your relation

like at dash-macro Asian ship like at the moment? There is not much to

say about it at the moment. Fierce competitors and that is what it is.

You have rivalry with Alonso at McLaren, does this feel more

intense? Not really. Different times, different places, I am more

grown up now and hopefully have learned. You are winning, Nico has

won this weekend. What do you have that will give you the edge in

Canada? I have this speed. When I get pole position, the way I drive

will be the right way and that is what I will continue to do for the

rest of the year and that is what will make the difference.

A thoughtful Lewis Hamilton. He managed to get through that

interview without saying anything controversial. He did, when he says,

when I get pole position, I will do it in the right way, I will race in

the right way. I think that is a subtle blow to the situation. He

does not believe Rosberg behaved properly at this race. There were

some positives he came out with. It was a great interview. He was more

reflective and covered the bases which he did not do immediately in

the podium interviews. The media will keep chiselling away and get

one of them to break first. Nico has the upper hand at this Grand Prix.

Lewis has belief he has the speed and that will take him to the World

Championship. How important was that win for Nico? Make or break, it was

lunchtime. If he did not win here and the meant went with Hamilton,

his rival, and after the four races he has had, it would have been over

-- the momentum. Who has the edge for the championship? Hamilton, this

fell away because of one lap in qualifying and him and his engineer

needs to look at when they send the car out and Montreal will be very

interesting. Daniel Ricciardo, congratulations on

a great podium, and Lewis said he was not bothered about you behind

but she should have been because -- he should have been because you

almost got him. We got closer than I expected. The Mercedes went quickly

and it was trying to hold onto third and keep Fernando Alonso at Bay. The

last 20 laps, I started to push and the silver are was in front and I

tried to do all I could -- the silver are. Monaco is tricky so that

was the best we could do. The two Silver Arrows are at loggerheads, it

did you go to bed last night dreaming you could sneak in for the

win? Of course! Can I ask you about the start because you lost time. It

was depressing. I was not very pleased with the start. What was the

problem? We did not get any drive. So it has been a little bit like

that. All year. We have not been able to put the grip down to the

ground, it is still not up to scratch. We would get that right and

not lose any more positions. Congratulations today, it was a

great podium. We will get the inside story from Red Bull. Skills! -- good

skills. What about Sebastian Vettel?

More technical trouble it yet again. Yes, not acceptable. -- yet again.

The shaft from the Turbo broke. I have had a discussion and it is not

acceptable any more. Not acceptable. They all really struggling. They are

both struggling because of the Renault problems. -- they really.

Sebastian Vettel, it is over, this is not possible. And he is a tough

operator and he demands the best and Renault are not delivering for the

team. You are saying his championship this year is over?

Absolutely clear in my view. We heard his frustration on the radio.

Come on, guys! I am sure you are trying everything.

His natural frustration is coming over. But reflecting on that and

answering his own question. That is aimed at Renault, it is not aimed at

Red Bull in Milton Keynes. Do you think it is over? Yes, unless

something amazing happens, he cannot this World Championship this year.

Solid fourth place today behind the top three, what about that? As I

suspected, we were not as quick as Mercedes, we knew that. We saw the

potential from Red Bull in the last part when Daniel Ricciardo managed

to push a bit. They deserved to be in front, we were not quick enough.

And we did not have direct from behind so we were alone. Fourth it

-- fourth, we need to make another step to fight for podiums.

A fourth for Fernando Alonso today and a 12 ways for Kimi Raikkonen who

had an amazing start. -- 12th place. Fernando got locked and that allowed

Kimi Raikkonen to slot in behind Sebastian Vettel. It was looking

good and we had the safety car and the clip with Max Chilton and that

ruined Kimi Raikkonen's race. He was strong up to that point, the safety

cap was the start of it. Next Chiltern got a reprimand. That

cascaded into more problems -- safety car. And he got a reprimand.

Yes, with that collision. Clearly, he has too much pace on the car, he

has bravado, he wants to pass and he was carrying too much speed into the

corner and he could not get around. A bit of frustration. That is a

great shot. David, talking of Kimi Raikkonen?, do you feel the team are

getting enough out of him? He has not had a good start, Fernando has

been there longer. Kimi Raikkonen has frustrations but he will work

hard, no question. Great news, we get to speak to

Jenson Button today who is waving to fans. Sixth place. You wanted to

know McLaren have moved forward, have you made a step forward? It was

always going to be, it was not going to be easy to go backwards. Put it

that way! A terrible day yesterday in qualifying. But it right today.

And the car round this track, it you need mechanical grip. -- I put it

right. You need efficiency and downforce, we are more competitive.

That is good for Montreal and we are looking forward to it. The car is

not very quick but it is pretty strong. We could sort that incident

with Sergio Perez, talk us through that. He was trying to go around the

concept -- around the outside of his team-mate. He was on the outside

going into Mirabeau so I went on the inside and he dropped back behind

his team-mate and he tried to pull in not knowing I was there. I tried

to back out because I did not want contact with anyone. It happened. It

damaged the front wing on my car and it put him out of the race and it is

never nice to see someone's race end early. Nico Hulkenberg was just in

front of you and you must have known he was on old tyres, did you think

you had a realistic chance of taking him? I did, it was Monaco -- it is

Monaco and it is difficult to overtake, my tyres are the same age

but he was on super-soft. I was taking it easy and saving them for

the last 20 laps. The problem is as soon as you start pushing, you

destroy them immediately. It was having a good go on La Rascasse but

I was pushing the limits and we could have ended up in the barriers.

I would have preferred fifth-place but good points. And the most

important thing is not where we finished, we all want to win the

race, but it is about progression and we have that. We do not see many

overtakes at Monaco but we saw one on your team-mate. I could say this

is the most amazing thing ever, but I have to say he was struggling with

a couple of things. He had problems at this point. Just round the

outside. It was a bit easier to go past him in that section.

crushing 1-24 Mercedes. Nico Rosberg winning the Monaco Grand Prix. --

1-2, the Mercedes. It leaves the championship looking

like this, a change at the top of the table. Four points is now the

difference. That battle is very strong.

Mercedes still leading with Red Bull with a lot of work to do in seconds.

And in ninth lace, Marussia, two point! -- ninth place. And this is

massive. We are joined by the driver of the

moment, Jules Bianchi. Fantastic today. This is your home race, tell

me about the emotions as you crossed the line? It was just amazing, it

was like winning a race. I had this feeling in 2012. I am really happy

and really proud of the team. It has been a long time they have been

waiting for that and finally we scored some points, so it is

amazing. The key moment was your pass on Kamui Kobayashi, the team

you have been battling with to be the first to get the points. Talk us

through this amazing pass down the inside into La Rascasse. It was

good, it was a bit tight, I had to take the momentum. I cannot say it

was not fair, it was tight. Three little touches. Yes, just a small

case. It was nice. Graham, the sporting director, what does this

mean regarding the money and the excitement? You will always remember

today so what do you do wish to mark you write, Vicky Fink is progress --

so what do you do? You are right, it is progress. For a younger team, it

is great to move forward. We have made the car quicker. This was not

just a lucky result, we have got speed in the car. We are looking

forward to the next race. We have a small team. You can see in the

garage, the reason why everyone was so happy is when you have got 197

people instead of over 1,000 people, everyone of the people in our team

now exactly what they have contributed and it is a direct

reward for them -- they know. An incredible reaction and when

people talk about the box office, this is vital. It must spur you one

for Canada, what can we expect? -- spray you one? We expect to be more

competitive. It is a special race. I think we are able to fight with

Sauber so we will have to continue to work to beat them on the track.
