For sure it is the best race. For the fans to get close to us. To be

:01:13.:01:19.

out there, per performing, it is unbelievable. We are racing through

:01:20.:01:24.

the streets, the tunnels, it is harder to follow, no room for

:01:25.:01:30.

errors. It is really difficult to overtake. You know you are on a

:01:31.:01:33.

roller-coaster ride, your heart is in your mouth, that is what it is

:01:34.:01:39.

like here the whole way around. 2008 we went on pole. I hit the wall.

:01:40.:01:42.

? COMMENTATOR: Lewis Hamilton has hit

:01:43.:01:49.

the barriers. In those moments your heart sinks to the lowest point. But

:01:50.:01:55.

then we did a pit stop. I never give up. You still have hope.

:01:56.:02:00.

COMMENTATOR: And the boyhood dream comes true, Lewis Hamilton wins the

:02:01.:02:08.

Monaco Grand Prix. . To get a win here is a stepping tone

:02:09.:02:13.

it would be historic for me it is quite an important one.

:02:14.:02:18.

Monaco, a place indeed where dreams really do come true. Hello and

:02:19.:02:22.

welcome to qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix. A perfect day here.

:02:23.:02:28.

Eddie and David are along for the roller-coaster ride. I really think

:02:29.:02:36.

it will be like that today. We saw Nico Rosberg's dream come true with

:02:37.:02:40.

the poling but what about Lewis Hamilton? Well, he has talked about

:02:41.:02:45.

it. He is excited about it. He has won here. That is a big thing in his

:02:46.:02:49.

mind. I don't think he cares if he is on pole position but he wants to

:02:50.:02:53.

win the race. How important is it to be on pole

:02:54.:02:58.

position? I think he does care. Clearly the points is where it is

:02:59.:03:03.

coming from but the mind games with Nico have started. Everything he has

:03:04.:03:07.

been talking about has been about getting the pole. Adding it to the

:03:08.:03:12.

long list of achievements in Formula One.

:03:13.:03:15.

Is this where we see the driver's skill at the forefront? Well you

:03:16.:03:22.

can't get around without a great car. It shows the drivers that are

:03:23.:03:26.

really at one with their machine. Confidence is a huge part of driving

:03:27.:03:31.

a lap here. You can put whatever number you want on it but you cannot

:03:32.:03:38.

drive 100% every lap. It is the guy that is more comfortable kissing the

:03:39.:03:45.

wide barriers, for sure. , , 1 00 concentration for the

:03:46.:04:13.

drivers and 100% fun for the fans. This glitzy place to host round six:

:04:14.:04:45.

All eyes on the Constructors' Championship:

:04:46.:04:59.

Well, sadly, this week we heard the news that triple Formula One world

:05:00.:05:09.

champion, Sir Jack Braba in had passed away. With his love of design

:05:10.:05:14.

and engineering and the talent for drying he was an inspiration to

:05:15.:05:21.

many, including Mark Webber. Earlier this week in Australia we

:05:22.:05:26.

lost one of the greats of our sport. Sir Jack Braban.

:05:27.:05:31.

COMMENTATOR: He shows the sort of form that marks him as the driver of

:05:32.:05:35.

the future. The three times Formula One world

:05:36.:05:41.

champion marks him as a phenomenal guy and racer.

:05:42.:05:56.

1959, 60, and of 6, -- 66 he was a hero.

:05:57.:06:02.

He was my childhood hero. It was a great Australian effort in

:06:03.:06:05.

66. I met jack when I was 17 Sydney. He

:06:06.:06:12.

supported me all the way through when I was chasing wins. He was a

:06:13.:06:20.

tenacious, disciplined guy. You are feeling venerable now? I am

:06:21.:06:25.

just getting into my stride. As a driver, as an engineer, what he

:06:26.:06:30.

did will never be done again. He was a legend.

:06:31.:06:38.

A true racing grit. And what an incredible story.

:06:39.:06:42.

They must have been amazing day days. He race raced against Fitapald

:06:43.:06:54.

I cans, so it shows in his time in Formula One he had great longevity

:06:55.:06:59.

and an amazing impact to the Australians that followed after him.

:07:00.:07:04.

He has left an amazing legacy? He has indeed. The pinnacle for that

:07:05.:07:08.

for me is something that I find incredible to understand. Three

:07:09.:07:12.

times world champion but to win it in his own car, that he designed,

:07:13.:07:17.

created, tested, all of the things that we know are so difficult, to do

:07:18.:07:21.

it in his own car, that is never going to happen again. I don't think

:07:22.:07:26.

it can be matched. But the other thing as you rightly say, he had

:07:27.:07:36.

three sons, two of which won Le Mans and the grandson is doing amazing

:07:37.:07:42.

things in junior Formula One. It adds to the history. It is magic.

:07:43.:07:49.

Let's catch up with the news now. How times change. Two years ago we

:07:50.:07:54.

had seven different winners in the opening seven races but only three

:07:55.:07:59.

have taken the spoils in the last 12 months. Given Mercedes domination,

:08:00.:08:05.

it may take the quirkiness of Monaco to change that.

:08:06.:08:09.

There is not a sector that is blowing everyone away. If we get it

:08:10.:08:14.

together we can challenge them on Saturday. Pole spatial a

:08:15.:08:20.

possibility? Always. Nico Rosberg has been the braids

:08:21.:08:24.

maid in the last four races but on the back of the news he will be a

:08:25.:08:30.

Mercedes driver for two years, he is leaving no stone unturned to get

:08:31.:08:34.

ahead of Lewis Hamilton. I could not see after the race in

:08:35.:08:39.

Barcelona. I told the guys we have to raise the street seat a little

:08:40.:08:45.

bit. That is the thing for this track to be able to see the kerbs

:08:46.:08:48.

better. Monaco is where deals for the future

:08:49.:08:53.

are done. Speculation sounds the long-term plans of Red Bull

:08:54.:08:58.

technical boss. There are rumours, that he has been made a ?20 million

:08:59.:09:03.

offer to join Ferrari. Aid ran has made his situation

:09:04.:09:08.

clear. He is committed to Red Bull and will be for the future.

:09:09.:09:11.

Does that mean Sunday night of Monaco or the next three years? That

:09:12.:09:17.

is open, isn't it? I will never go into the details of a contract. But

:09:18.:09:23.

he is not going anywhere. Even if he stays put, Ferrari's new

:09:24.:09:30.

boss is busy making plans for the future. This is his third race at

:09:31.:09:36.

the helm and says we can expect news soon.

:09:37.:09:39.

We are making a lot of important changes in the way that we work. In

:09:40.:09:43.

the investments, in the programme we are to launch. When you ask the

:09:44.:09:52.

question, do we have an idea after improvements, I say, yes, we have

:09:53.:10:00.

80% knowledgeable about what we must improve and we know about the

:10:01.:10:03.

competitive advantage. That is clear.

:10:04.:10:06.

We have come to the top of the pit lane. There is an amazing crowd.

:10:07.:10:11.

Interesting news that week, the offer made by Ferrari to Adrian? Is

:10:12.:10:20.

he going to stay or go? My opinion is that he is not motivated by

:10:21.:10:25.

money. He is a British boy through and through. He loves the life that

:10:26.:10:30.

sounds him where he is. But I am intrigued. I would like to ask

:10:31.:10:36.

another question with your answer. What capacity is he going to stay

:10:37.:10:40.

with in Red Bull? My idea, the way that I am hearing things that there

:10:41.:10:46.

could be a deal with Ben Ainslie for the America's Cup Challenge or more

:10:47.:10:51.

likely a road car from Red Bull and Infinity and all of those people

:10:52.:10:56.

that are there. That is my little spy work going on. What has he said

:10:57.:11:01.

to you, David? I think it is speculation. Ferrari denied that the

:11:02.:11:07.

offer was made. But Adrian has had a great run at Red Bull. Four World

:11:08.:11:13.

Championships back to back. But they have produced another car. They have

:11:14.:11:19.

issues with it, why not get involved with the engine design? I believe he

:11:20.:11:23.

should be involved with the race team, directly or a possible

:11:24.:11:26.

yachting programme that may excite him as he is into that. But I

:11:27.:11:31.

believe he would like to see in his legacy, the design and the

:11:32.:11:34.

manufacture of a high-quality road car.

:11:35.:11:37.

But you are saying he is going to stay within the Red Bull fold? Not

:11:38.:11:45.

necessarily in Formula One. You are confusing me? In the Red

:11:46.:11:48.

Bull family. Things are up for Grosjean, despite

:11:49.:11:55.

Lotus having a tricky time, the Frenchman has kept his cool. He was

:11:56.:12:04.

once branded a first line nutter by Mark Webber.

:12:05.:12:08.

My dream is to become the world champion.

:12:09.:12:11.

? COMMENTATOR: Gross anyhas made a

:12:12.:12:17.

brilliant pass. He holds foreign the best result of the year.

:12:18.:12:24.

We finish finished 2013 well, we started 2014 not in the way we

:12:25.:12:27.

wanted, it was not good for us. Going to Spain, a good race felt

:12:28.:12:31.

good. ?

:12:32.:12:34.

COMMENTATOR: Lotus up there in the top ten. Grosjean, what a boost for

:12:35.:12:38.

the emat that. When you realise how much trouble

:12:39.:12:43.

they could be in, did you think you made the wrong decision by staying

:12:44.:12:47.

there? No. You could not know until the first test. We were behind. Our

:12:48.:12:52.

car was not working, it was getting worse and worse. It is a change of

:12:53.:12:58.

plan. We ewill not be world champion this year. It is taking more time

:12:59.:13:02.

but it is getting better. In Monaco, we have seen you be so

:13:03.:13:08.

successful in some circuits, this one in Formula One has been more

:13:09.:13:14.

difficult? Last year, I arrived in a state of mind that I wanted to go

:13:15.:13:18.

for it, maybe too much. COMMENTATOR: How about that?

:13:19.:13:24.

Grosjean has crashed tree times this weekend but now gone quickest.

:13:25.:13:28.

I was quick, getting back with the car. Getting the confidence back.

:13:29.:13:35.

COMMENTATOR: He got over the demons of the recklessness of the crash.

:13:36.:13:40.

That is the fourth crash. One day I was down. I did not want

:13:41.:13:46.

to speak to anyone. Only my wife could support me. But you have to

:13:47.:13:50.

see the positive. The car was getting better, improving every time

:13:51.:13:55.

but we could not see it. Suddenly it went together and showed up. To be

:13:56.:14:00.

fair, I have been strong mentally after criticism from Mark Webber. It

:14:01.:14:05.

has not been easy. I was hoping that someone hit him,

:14:06.:14:11.

the guys said it was his own doing. Maybe two separate starts, one for

:14:12.:14:14.

him, one for us. Do you think that you will get the

:14:15.:14:18.

weren't the other drivers? I think that I do.

:14:19.:14:22.

I am proud to be part of the best drivers. I think that I showed last

:14:23.:14:25.

year with the car and this year when it is more difficult to bring it

:14:26.:14:30.

back to the top. Hopefully one day I will be the

:14:31.:14:34.

world champion. If others come knocking on the door

:14:35.:14:38.

with a car that can win races and championships, surely you will have

:14:39.:14:43.

to go somewhere else? You want to go to the best. To get the best

:14:44.:14:47.

opportunity. We will see at the end of the year. A very busy Lotus

:14:48.:15:00.

garage prequalifying. I suppose the question is, come the summer break,

:15:01.:15:04.

how many options, Eddie, do you think Romain is going to have? It

:15:05.:15:11.

all depends. They love him, he's French, everything that they want,

:15:12.:15:18.

Grosjean gives to them. It will be wherever they decide to put him. How

:15:19.:15:22.

difficult do you think it is to see how Romain is in this team? He has

:15:23.:15:27.

improved considerably since he started. The last gauge alongside

:15:28.:15:32.

Kimi Raikkonen, over the course of two seasons together, Kimi was

:15:33.:15:35.

always more consistent. He needs more of that to stand out for the

:15:36.:15:40.

other top teams to want to employ him. There been some interesting

:15:41.:15:45.

sessions, close at the top. Who is your tip for pole position? I think

:15:46.:15:50.

it will be Lewis, he has the cutting edge at the moment. David is going

:15:51.:15:54.

to the commentary box. Tom and Lee are in the pit lane.

:15:55.:16:15.

Qualifying is about to begin on the most unforgiving circuit of the

:16:16.:16:20.

season, as well as the most prestigious. It is Nico Rosberg, the

:16:21.:16:25.

pole winner out here last year, who sets out first. Psychologically, it

:16:26.:16:29.

makes such a difference being first out on the track. Your whole site of

:16:30.:16:37.

lap of where the track conditions are, you have a clear track ahead of

:16:38.:16:41.

you. That has been planned, it's not by accident that he is the first man

:16:42.:16:46.

out on the track. Monaco looks glorious in the sunshine. Let's get

:16:47.:16:50.

a word from Tom in the pits. What are we expecting to see during

:16:51.:16:54.

qualifying? It's going to be very busy, lots of cars piling up under

:16:55.:16:59.

the racetrack. If we get all 22 cars out together, that's one car every

:17:00.:17:07.

75 metres around this racetrack. The computer simulations up and down the

:17:08.:17:12.

pit lane are saying we are looking at a 17.5, which looks very

:17:13.:17:15.

ambitious. That would put you well inside the top ten during final

:17:16.:17:18.

practice. They think the track temperatures, by 10 degrees, and

:17:19.:17:22.

that could be enough to switch the tyres on and find that second or so

:17:23.:17:26.

that the car is going to need to achieve from what they did this

:17:27.:17:32.

morning. The cars are on track. Hamilton and Forsberg bows out

:17:33.:17:36.

there. Two of the only drivers to have taken one pole position at

:17:37.:17:39.

least this year. Lewis Hamilton has taken the other. Four pole

:17:40.:17:45.

positions this year. As Rosberg reminded us, to try to reset the

:17:46.:17:50.

balance, at the moment it is still 1-1 in dry conditions, because so

:17:51.:17:53.

many of the qualifying sessions we've had this year have been in the

:17:54.:17:57.

wet. David, what are we looking at here? It's about trying to find the

:17:58.:18:03.

position to start the lap. Hamilton was holding back. Rosberg is at the

:18:04.:18:07.

first corner already. Lewis doesn't want to see him at all. He just

:18:08.:18:11.

wants to concentrate on bringing the tyres in, getting a feel for the

:18:12.:18:15.

track conditions. Being a living thing, it changes from when they

:18:16.:18:19.

were last on the track. They are running on this harder of the two

:18:20.:18:24.

compounds of tyre, the soft tyre with the yellow sidewalls. Let's

:18:25.:18:29.

listen to Rosberg. A slight Sauber left on the front brakes, keep

:18:30.:18:35.

warming them up. That is explaining the temperatures are not even in an

:18:36.:18:39.

ideal working condition across the front axle. You may find yourself

:18:40.:18:47.

grabbing a brake. The temperatures of the tyres will go up to around

:18:48.:18:52.

1000 degrees, and it's dropping to a few hundred degrees on the

:18:53.:18:55.

straights. You don't get as much time for them to cool here because

:18:56.:19:02.

you may not get the peaks as well. Cooling and controlling the cooling

:19:03.:19:06.

across the front and rear axle is key. The rear axle is used for the

:19:07.:19:11.

regeneration. That's when they are charging the batteries. Therefore

:19:12.:19:14.

they've got less reliance on the size of the rear calipers. The front

:19:15.:19:19.

axle is pretty much standard, as we've seen through the history of

:19:20.:19:23.

Formula One. Absolutely crucial that drivers get the right temperature. A

:19:24.:19:28.

relatively slow first lap. The tyres are the harder of the two that were

:19:29.:19:34.

brought by Pirelli this weekend. We have seen during practice it takes

:19:35.:19:38.

quite a lot of laps. Even the best bars, like Mercedes and Red Bull,

:19:39.:19:42.

struggle a little bit to get these tyres fully up to temperature and

:19:43.:19:45.

get into the narrow window where you get the best grip available. Was

:19:46.:19:51.

burgled dash-macro/quicker on this lap. It looks as though the track is

:19:52.:20:00.

getting quicker. He now makes his way alongside the Mediterranean,

:20:01.:20:04.

through the famous tunnel at Monaco. Then down the hill into the chicane.

:20:05.:20:10.

Quite a steep hill, this. A lot of accidents there in the past. Nico

:20:11.:20:13.

Rosberg himself had crashed there a couple of years ago, just hitting

:20:14.:20:17.

the wall on the outside. We've seen many people make a mistake there the

:20:18.:20:23.

past. Through the swimming pool section. Usually we don't get to see

:20:24.:20:27.

that open-air swimming pool. That's what they drive past. Now past the

:20:28.:20:33.

restaurant on the inside where viewers have a lovely opportunity to

:20:34.:20:36.

look right down into the cockpit of the racing car as it comes past.

:20:37.:20:41.

This is a much more competitive lap time. Still a little way off what we

:20:42.:20:47.

saw on the super soft tyre this morning. It feels OK. We gather that

:20:48.:21:00.

was at turn ten, the chicane, that he's made a mistake, Daniil Kvyat,

:21:01.:21:10.

he was having the first time riding around the streets in his car. We

:21:11.:21:14.

haven't seen any mistakes from him we said that earlier, but he's made

:21:15.:21:19.

a mistake. They are doing a change in the pits. Hopefully he will be

:21:20.:21:28.

able to come back out. Alonso, 1:19 .01. This lap could be enough to see

:21:29.:21:31.

him through to the next part of qualifying. One minute 17.06. It's

:21:32.:21:39.

marginal. You might need to do a one: 17.05. Not a bad effort at all.

:21:40.:21:48.

That was the spin, my goodness, four crew VAT. You come over the crest

:21:49.:21:57.

and lose the axle. The nose does its job perfectly. It manages to keep

:21:58.:22:00.

all the rest of the car off the barriers. He was able to give clear

:22:01.:22:12.

information to the team, I've damaged the nose, the rest of the

:22:13.:22:16.

car his spine. They had the confidence to get him back in and

:22:17.:22:20.

change that part. You've been called out on that section. No excuses for

:22:21.:22:26.

experience. In 2008, I crashed the car there in qualifying. You are

:22:27.:22:30.

convinced that something is broken because you think, how can I lose it

:22:31.:22:34.

at that turn? It's just the momentum. A whole bunch of cars are

:22:35.:22:38.

backing up, trying to get a clear space. You've got to be careful

:22:39.:22:42.

because anyone that is deemed to be holding up another driver will see a

:22:43.:22:48.

penalty after qualifying. Alonso is seven for the moment. We go back

:22:49.:22:52.

with Lewis Hamilton now in the other Mercedes. Nico Rosberg currently

:22:53.:22:58.

fastest. Who is in the drop zone? Both Red Bulls haven't been out yet,

:22:59.:23:04.

so we are waiting for Ricciardo and Vettel. Will that be enough? It

:23:05.:23:11.

should be, but they may still have to switch on the Red Bull super soft

:23:12.:23:16.

tyre. 20 of the teams will have to do that. Maldonado has used the

:23:17.:23:22.

super soft tyre to go third fastest. Massa goes on the harder of the two

:23:23.:23:28.

compounds of tyre. Let's see how quickly can be here. He goes third

:23:29.:23:35.

for the moment behind the two Mercedes of Rosberg and Hamilton.

:23:36.:23:39.

Again, an impressive lap from the Australian. Hamilton, let's see if

:23:40.:23:43.

this is a further improvement. It is, but it's not enough to go faster

:23:44.:23:47.

than his team-mate. Now Sebastian Vettel comes through the final turn.

:23:48.:23:53.

Vettel looking to improve, if possible. Yes, it is an improvement.

:23:54.:23:57.

He is sixth fastest. But as we've seen throughout the weekend,

:23:58.:24:03.

Ricciardo has the edge. Looks like Sebastian is a bit longer in the

:24:04.:24:13.

corner, having to use more of the circuit, especially on the exit.

:24:14.:24:16.

Daniel seems to be able to get the car turned and then accelerate away

:24:17.:24:20.

from the corner. Sebastian had a good last one pre-. That would have

:24:21.:24:26.

been different had Daniel been credited. As we join Ricciardo

:24:27.:24:35.

through the high-speed chicane, some oversteer but plenty of space to

:24:36.:24:40.

play with. A little bit wider than he could have got away with. Again,

:24:41.:24:49.

leaving plenty of space to the apex. The target is not to be fastest,

:24:50.:24:53.

it's simply to go through to the next part of qualifying. A good lap,

:24:54.:24:58.

with the fastest final sector of anybody. You can see how dealing

:24:59.:25:01.

with the traffic is not at all straightforward. The clock ticks

:25:02.:25:05.

away, just over six and a half minutes to go in the first part of

:25:06.:25:11.

qualifying. Hulkenberg, Perez, Chilton in the drop zone at the

:25:12.:25:15.

moment. Vettel is fifth currently. We think you may need more than

:25:16.:25:19.

that. You've got to decide when you come in and put the super-soft tyres

:25:20.:25:23.

on, you can't leave it too late. Different levels of confidence in

:25:24.:25:26.

the pit lane. Both Mercedes drivers have gone back out on the soft tyre,

:25:27.:25:30.

so they think they can get through on the slower of the two compounds.

:25:31.:25:35.

Raikkonen has just gone past on the super soft. Not as much confidence

:25:36.:25:42.

from Ferrari. We are on board with Perez, it gives you that feel of

:25:43.:25:47.

being in a tunnel. The driver sits so low, all you can see is the

:25:48.:25:52.

asphalt on the walls on either side. He will be disappointed to have got

:25:53.:25:56.

traffic from the south. He lost a bit of time in the last sector.

:25:57.:26:02.

Currently eighth, but he will quite rightly feel there is more

:26:03.:26:05.

performance to come. Magnussen was close to the wall through the final

:26:06.:26:10.

turn. That's a good lap. Oh, no! He's locked up and gone straight

:26:11.:26:16.

down it. Magnussen thankfully saves it from hitting anything. That

:26:17.:26:22.

squeal you heard wasn't the tyre, it was from inside the cockpit! He got

:26:23.:26:26.

away with a very good lap, only three tenths down on the two

:26:27.:26:30.

Mercedes. He's gone faster than Ricciardo. I'm not sure where that

:26:31.:26:35.

has come from, because this morning Magnussen was 11th and Button was

:26:36.:26:38.

12. He is on the faster of the two tyres, so that's where it's come

:26:39.:26:43.

from. But has also done that lap on a set of super-softs, he's now gone

:26:44.:26:50.

up to third. Look out evenly matched the two McLaren drivers. McLaren

:26:51.:26:59.

hoping to get through in the drop zone currently we have Bianchi and

:27:00.:27:02.

Hulkenberg, he's not managed to get a clear lap in yet.

:27:03.:27:11.

We will see a lot of changes to this in the final three and a half

:27:12.:27:17.

minutes. Watching Kimi Raikkonen go through the hairpin, the drop down

:27:18.:27:24.

the hill. Steeply down. A tight right-hander and into the tunnel.

:27:25.:27:29.

Building up the speed and pace flat out through the right hand through

:27:30.:27:31.

the tunnel, even though they can't see the exit. Then over this bumpy,

:27:32.:27:36.

tricky braking section, where we saw the mistake from Kvyat earlier. Neat

:27:37.:27:41.

and tidy from Raikkonen. You can use too much of the curve there, because

:27:42.:27:45.

you are at low speed there is no downforce on the car. It really

:27:46.:27:49.

starts to bounce on the tyre. At the high-speed chicane you can use more

:27:50.:27:56.

because you got this tremendous load pushing down through the wings and

:27:57.:27:58.

stabilising the car. Alonso pulls out of the way. Hamilton has gone

:27:59.:28:06.

fastest of all in the first sector. Let's see where this puts Kimi

:28:07.:28:10.

Raikkonen, fit for the moment. Another lock up there from the

:28:11.:28:15.

McLaren, runs wide. That was Button this time. Bianchi has been going

:28:16.:28:20.

quite well so far, 17th at the moment. What an opportunity. Can

:28:21.:28:25.

Marussia get one car or both cars? Chilton has had a tougher time over

:28:26.:28:29.

the weekend so far, but what result would be if Marussia could get into

:28:30.:28:35.

that top 16. What is he doing there? He looked like he was pulling to let

:28:36.:28:39.

him past. He has obviously then been told by his team that Hamilton is on

:28:40.:28:42.

an alt lap, so therefore keep the position. Hamilton was fastest in

:28:43.:28:49.

the first sector, so Bianchi, well, that was really bizarre. He pulled

:28:50.:28:52.

over as he came out of the second part of the chicane, looking to

:28:53.:28:55.

allow the Mercedes to overtake. Maybe he felt there had backed out

:28:56.:29:01.

of it. Expect him to have a visit to the stewards afterwards. If he makes

:29:02.:29:04.

it through and get a penalty, let's wait and see what happens. Jean-Eric

:29:05.:29:11.

Vergne. Good middle sector by Werner. Look, he's gone fastest.

:29:12.:29:18.

Vergne, on the super-soft tyres. Toro Rosso were quicker than McLaren

:29:19.:29:23.

and Williams this morning. The Toro Rosso looking pretty competitive on

:29:24.:29:26.

the super-soft attire. Maybe struggling a bit more on the soft

:29:27.:29:27.

tyre. He has changed his crash helmet from

:29:28.:29:39.

this morning. Alonso has set the finest gasbag fastest final sector

:29:40.:29:45.

to both. Ferrari not confident enough to get through on the yellow

:29:46.:29:50.

walled tyre. Ricciardo has done his time on the yellow tyre, so has

:29:51.:29:56.

Vettel. We were looking at Marcus Ericsson as he excited Casino

:29:57.:30:01.

Square. My goodness! He made contact, how unnecessary was that? I

:30:02.:30:06.

think he was completely unsighted by mass. You didn't realise he was

:30:07.:30:10.

going to give him the space. He carried way too much speed into the

:30:11.:30:14.

corner and has taken them both into the barrier. A yellow flag, everyone

:30:15.:30:18.

will have to back off in that section. This could determine the

:30:19.:30:22.

order. As long as you sure you have slowed in that section, it's not

:30:23.:30:26.

impossible to still improve your overall lap time. We've seen that

:30:27.:30:30.

several times this year. But the likelihood is it's going to be...

:30:31.:30:36.

It's clear. They've got the way. It's very impressive they've done

:30:37.:30:46.

that so quickly. Daniel Riccardio managing to trap himself into the

:30:47.:30:52.

top 16. Another Toro Rosso car has stopped. Bianchi is on track. He

:30:53.:30:57.

really fancies his chances of beating one or both of the Saubers.

:30:58.:31:10.

So, let's see, Bianchi, it was Massa pulled to the inside.

:31:11.:31:14.

Wow, Sutil has held Bianchi up as well. That is not necessary. Not in

:31:15.:31:21.

a fast car like Tabac. So, a lot of bad boys out there.

:31:22.:31:25.

They have backed out now. We know who has not made it through. No-one

:31:26.:31:30.

else is going to improve on the lap. It means that both Saubers are out.

:31:31.:31:40.

At the top it was Jean-Eric Vergne, the Frenchman, and we know that

:31:41.:31:49.

subjectity, Gutierrez, Bianchi, Chiltern, Kobayashi and Ericsson not

:31:50.:31:53.

going through. Well, no shocks there.

:31:54.:32:00.

Daniel Fiat has made it through. He has done very well. .

:32:01.:32:06.

Look at this. Bang. He gets himself together, puts on a new nose in the

:32:07.:32:14.

car. I had written him off. He actually came back to get out of the

:32:15.:32:20.

qualifying, into the next session. And let's have a look at the

:32:21.:32:24.

Ericsson Massa incident. This is being investigated for causing a

:32:25.:32:27.

collision. What do you make of it. I will have to look at that from a

:32:28.:32:31.

different angle. Here is the situation. I think that look, he is

:32:32.:32:37.

in the corner too quick. Is he going to make it around? I am not sure.

:32:38.:32:43.

Did Massa turn into the line? It will be 50/50.

:32:44.:32:50.

The applause at the end by Massa inferred, well done, mate. It was a

:32:51.:32:55.

very sarcastic remark. We will have to see. If you take the body

:32:56.:33:00.

language, maybe Massa was in the clear. But we have to see what the

:33:01.:33:04.

situation is. He will be upset, if that car does

:33:05.:33:11.

not make it back, he will not anybody the second session.

:33:12.:33:15.

Let's find out what happened. Marcus, tell us what happened? I was

:33:16.:33:20.

locked down into turn six. I went into the wall. Massa was there on

:33:21.:33:23.

the outside. Have you spoken to him? No, I have

:33:24.:33:28.

just gotten back now. We saw a slow sarcastic hand clap as

:33:29.:33:36.

you ended up on the wall alongside Ericsson, how are you feeling?

:33:37.:33:40.

Nothing to say. There was space for him to pass me. He went over my car.

:33:41.:33:47.

It is really a shame. Qualifying was not so bad on that

:33:48.:33:53.

moment. I was maybe tenth. It would have been possible to fight. But we

:33:54.:33:57.

don't have a very competitive car on this drive. It could have been

:33:58.:34:02.

possible to fight, though. So my qualifying now has finished there.

:34:03.:34:06.

Tomorrow, I don't know. It will be tricky. A difficult race.

:34:07.:34:09.

Starting not on the right position. So, not nice.

:34:10.:34:15.

You are an experienced Formula One driver, he has never driven a

:34:16.:34:20.

formula car around here, do you have a word with him? I think he

:34:21.:34:25.

understands what he did. I think that the FI understand. But he needs

:34:26.:34:30.

to come to me. I will not come to him. I never did that in my life.

:34:31.:34:35.

The minimum he can say is sorry. The second part of qualifying is

:34:36.:34:41.

underway, again Mercedes have their cars at the end of the pit lane

:34:42.:34:46.

ready to go. In the first session they did not use the soft tyres,

:34:47.:34:53.

they were slightly eclipsed by the Toro Rosso and Jean-Eric Vergne. In.

:34:54.:35:03.

Jean-Eric Vergne was fastest. Daniel scraping in? It was a good comeback

:35:04.:35:10.

from Daniel. He had the moment of moments in the braking zone, into

:35:11.:35:15.

the chicane. Understandably he was tentative after. But he is through

:35:16.:35:19.

to the next part. Now the focus is trying to make the top ten.

:35:20.:35:24.

Tom, the lap times did not improve as the teams were expecting. What

:35:25.:35:29.

can we expect from this one? You are right. I have had a few apologies

:35:30.:35:34.

from the engineers. They are now saying that a 17. 5 is

:35:35.:35:41.

looking like the cut off. That is for Q 3. I had said it was for Q 2.

:35:42.:35:47.

You are on board with Lewis Hamilton. He has heat in the tyres.

:35:48.:35:53.

Watch him. We watched Rosberg at the top of the hill, so a switch from

:35:54.:36:00.

one to the other. Through Casino Square goeses areberg.

:36:01.:36:05.

The year before the Mercedes had the fastest qualifying time here at

:36:06.:36:15.

Monaco, courtesy of Schumm. -- Michael Schumacher.

:36:16.:36:20.

There are various incidents after qualifying, and a owe ten --

:36:21.:36:29.

potential impeding incident between Gutierrez and Perez. There is

:36:30.:36:33.

another incident for impeding between Pastor Maldonado and another

:36:34.:36:40.

driver. I think that the stewards are going to be pretty busy here.

:36:41.:36:47.

So far on the lap is Rosberg, quicker in the first sector, slower

:36:48.:36:51.

in the second. So it is very much at the beginning of this qualifying Q

:36:52.:36:57.

it session about how they finish the lap in the last sector.

:36:58.:37:03.

16. 6.6 for Rosberg. That is the fastest that we have seen. Let's see

:37:04.:37:07.

what Lewis Hamilton does in response.

:37:08.:37:13.

This is going to be another great rivalry.

:37:14.:37:22.

With the laps they have achieved the target for this part of qualifying,

:37:23.:37:27.

the real battle for pole comes in Q 3. Daniel Riccardio comes to the

:37:28.:37:32.

last part of the Swimming Pool. It is the entry to the high-peed

:37:33.:37:39.

chicane, it is where Lewis Hamilton is appearing to be losing time.

:37:40.:37:45.

These are corners he must focus on. Can Daniel Riccardio get closer to

:37:46.:37:49.

the Mercedes? He is half a second down. He was closer this morning.

:37:50.:37:54.

Now we are with Fernando Alonso. You have to save the best to last in

:37:55.:38:00.

Monaco. He is fourth fastest but a big difference in time between

:38:01.:38:08.

Alonso and the leaders. Fernando Alonso used the soft set of

:38:09.:38:14.

tyres in the previous session. Yep, he is on the tyres he used

:38:15.:38:17.

earlier. It looks like he has a lot of front

:38:18.:38:25.

slip in the car. There is JeanAlessi. He was always great to

:38:26.:38:31.

watch in street circuits. This is the Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen, my

:38:32.:38:35.

goodness, he was close to the barrier there. More room on the way

:38:36.:38:41.

into the final part of the Swimming Pool section. A forker pole and race

:38:42.:38:48.

winner here some years ago. A good sector for Kimi Raikkonen. The

:38:49.:38:52.

fastest of anybody. So a happenedy lap for the Flying Finn.

:38:53.:38:58.

He losing out in the last part of the lap but a fraction faster than

:38:59.:39:02.

his team-mate to go fourth at this stage.

:39:03.:39:06.

Mercedes are acing the first sector, close to Red Bull. But four tenths

:39:07.:39:12.

faster than the fastest Ferrari. That is a lot of lap time to give

:39:13.:39:19.

away. Less than a tenth is separated

:39:20.:39:29.

between the riders, Daniel Riccardio and Alonso.

:39:30.:39:34.

This is a lovely view from Casino Square.

:39:35.:39:39.

Now, Daniel Kvyat. He made a mistake in the first part of qualifying.

:39:40.:39:43.

Hitting the barrier. Scraping through in 16th place, he is seventh

:39:44.:39:48.

for the moment. He is faster than his team-mate.

:39:49.:39:59.

No, now, he is referring to the electrical power he needs to do a

:40:00.:40:04.

fast lap. I wonder if there is a difference between the different

:40:05.:40:07.

teams, the power units in how they are able to charge up the electrical

:40:08.:40:13.

energy. Mercedes don't seem to have a problem with that but maybe a

:40:14.:40:17.

different story for Red Bull. He backed out of the lap with the

:40:18.:40:21.

issues. There are 15 runners in the session.

:40:22.:40:28.

Massa will not take part. So, he is 20.2. That is about three tenths

:40:29.:40:35.

down on Rosberg in the first sector, so it suggests that the K is

:40:36.:40:40.

working. Not as quick as his team-mate there. Let's see, a long

:40:41.:40:46.

whosation before getting on the power for the corns.

:40:47.:40:59.

-- corners. He is using the tyres to slow the car going through from the

:41:00.:41:04.

left to the right. He is hesitant to go to full power. Three tenths down

:41:05.:41:10.

to the middle sector to the best overall lap. Looking to be about

:41:11.:41:15.

half a second from the fastest lap depending on how he finishes the

:41:16.:41:18.

last corner. The target is to be top ten.

:41:19.:41:23.

Let's see if it is enough. He is across the line in fourth. Almost

:41:24.:41:36.

the same lap time as his team-mate. Now we don't know what that problem

:41:37.:41:42.

is, if that is referring to the lack of electrical energy. But whatever

:41:43.:41:46.

it is, Vuelta a Espana is not sounding happy. He should be safely

:41:47.:41:51.

in the top ten. Grosjean continues the lap. He is looking tidy. Looks

:41:52.:41:56.

like he is pacing himself. He is building up the lap through

:41:57.:42:04.

Tabac. Through the pieing-speed chicane it is tighter the second

:42:05.:42:08.

part of the exit of the Swimming Pool.

:42:09.:42:14.

No issue for Grosjean as he goes through the last turn.

:42:15.:42:23.

Both Lotus cars are through. 12 is the best for the moment for

:42:24.:42:30.

Grosjean. It looks like Lotus will be struggling to get a car, let

:42:31.:42:35.

alone two into the top ten today. On board now with Nico Hulk.

:42:36.:42:45.

-- Nico Hulkenberg. Perez has put a lap in as well. Nico

:42:46.:42:51.

Hulkenberg is ninth. Perez is down... Perez is coming up to

:42:52.:42:57.

complete his lap. He looks the same lap time. He will be around the area

:42:58.:43:01.

where Nico Hulkenberg currently sits.

:43:02.:43:07.

Let's see how the rivalry stands. Perez is a little quicker. That puts

:43:08.:43:13.

Nico Hulkenberg into the danger territory but knowledges Jenson

:43:14.:43:17.

Button into the drop-zone. It is still not enough. He has been pushed

:43:18.:43:23.

down to the 13th place. Pastor Maldonado, I don't think he is able

:43:24.:43:29.

to improve significantly. He crosses the line, Pastor Maldonado, no

:43:30.:43:34.

change. He is in 15th place. There is Pastor Maldonado. It looks like

:43:35.:43:41.

Lotus are going out but what about Jenson Button? He has done a lap. He

:43:42.:43:46.

did a quick first sector. He had to back out of it. He is running out of

:43:47.:43:55.

time with a minute-and-a-half to go. Rosberg is fastest of all in the

:43:56.:44:00.

second sectors. So the interteam battle continues.

:44:01.:44:05.

A great lap by Rosberg. Going faster again. But Hamilton is a on a quick

:44:06.:44:12.

lachlt Ricardo has gone up the hill at a personal best. Hamilton has

:44:13.:44:19.

gone purple in the middle sector. You are riding with Grosjean.

:44:20.:44:26.

He backed out of it. Lewis Hamilton is coming through.

:44:27.:44:31.

Look at the lap time... Yes! Fastest by a tenth. Perez just crossing the

:44:32.:44:46.

line there. We're waiting for Bottas in the Williams. Bottas 13th, not

:44:47.:44:51.

enough for him. Button still outside the top ten. Button trying to make

:44:52.:44:56.

it round. Where is Jenson Button? He zapped the last corner now, so he

:44:57.:45:01.

will get one more lap in as he attempts to get into that top ten.

:45:02.:45:06.

Looking at Jean-Eric Vergne, who's been impressive so far in

:45:07.:45:10.

qualifying. He was fastest in the first part, but this is a real

:45:11.:45:15.

battle now to try and get into the final top ten shoot out. Look at him

:45:16.:45:20.

slithering and sliding. Fantastic! He knows this is it. Last chance for

:45:21.:45:28.

Jean-Eric Vergne. The Frenchman, is close to a home Grand Prix for the

:45:29.:45:33.

French drivers as it gets. Great effort by Jean-Eric Vergne. His

:45:34.:45:38.

team-mate is currently 10th. Hulkenberg is out. It looks as

:45:39.:45:40.

though he's been outqualified by his team-mate, Daniil Kvyat. Vergne,

:45:41.:45:49.

that's remarkable. Button is struggling a bit. Jenson Button

:45:50.:45:56.

could be out of qualifying here. Can the Lotus do any more than it has

:45:57.:46:01.

done so far? It can't. Romain Grosjean is out of the top ten. He

:46:02.:46:06.

is 14th. Bottas, he has failed to make it as well. Neither Williams

:46:07.:46:10.

will be in the top ten. That's a bit of a surprise based on the past

:46:11.:46:14.

they've shown at other circuits. Jenson Button is not going to make

:46:15.:46:19.

it. He's not fast enough in either the first or second sectors. Let's

:46:20.:46:25.

just confirm that. He's changing up early, he's back at it all off. He

:46:26.:46:30.

knows he's not there. He has been outqualified by his team-mate. He is

:46:31.:46:35.

not made it into the top ten. The 2000 Monaco pole winner and race

:46:36.:46:40.

winner will not be happy about that. Hamilton fastest in the second part

:46:41.:46:45.

of qualifying. Rosberg just attend behind. The gap a little bit bitter

:46:46.:46:51.

to Vettel, Alonso and Ricciardo, but the drivers who are definitely out

:46:52.:46:57.

of the session Hulkenberg, Button, was Jean, Maldonado and Massa.

:46:58.:47:06.

Definitely a more controlled session, that one. It wasn't a good

:47:07.:47:10.

session for Jenson Button, who has been outqualified by his team-mate.

:47:11.:47:18.

Starting with Daniil Kvyat first, right from the moment when he lost

:47:19.:47:24.

his front nose. Let us not forget, the first time in a Formula One car

:47:25.:47:28.

here at Monaco, a very daunting track. A first-class effort from

:47:29.:47:32.

him. Jenson, what can we say? More of the same, lacklustre, in my

:47:33.:47:40.

opinion. Sadly, against Jenson, because his team-mate did do an

:47:41.:47:43.

amazing job. In the past, Jenson has told us he thought the team was

:47:44.:47:47.

being held back just a tiny piece by not having an experienced codriver

:47:48.:47:52.

alongside him. Well, I'm sorry, his codriver and partner and team-mate

:47:53.:47:56.

is in front of him here. Jenson, you have to find something else and you

:47:57.:47:59.

have to find a new sense of speed. We want you up there and this isn't

:48:00.:48:04.

good enough. Shoot out coming for you in a minute. First of all, let's

:48:05.:48:10.

hear from Jenson. What was the problem out there

:48:11.:48:17.

today? Key one was all right, I was fifth or sixth in that. But in key

:48:18.:48:25.

two, on my first time lap, I had one of the Toro Rossos... I don't think

:48:26.:48:31.

he saw me but then he did, tried to back out but there wasn't room for

:48:32.:48:37.

two cars in that part. Is it good news that your team-mate is out

:48:38.:48:40.

there in the car and is a little bit stronger, or is it not really

:48:41.:48:44.

helping so much now you are standing here? Know, first of all it yourself

:48:45.:48:50.

you think about and then the team. The car should be in key three but I

:48:51.:48:52.

didn't get enough out of it. COMMENTATOR: Such a crucial pole

:48:53.:49:03.

position, when you consider that nine out of the ten last Grand Prix

:49:04.:49:07.

here have been won from that top spot. Lewis Hamilton has never taken

:49:08.:49:11.

pole position here in Monaco. He has won the race but he hasn't taken the

:49:12.:49:16.

top spot in qualifying. Let's see whether he can. The rivalry with his

:49:17.:49:20.

team-mate, Nico Rosberg, who was on pole position here last year is as

:49:21.:49:24.

hot as ever. The prospect for a wonderful 12 minute session is very

:49:25.:49:29.

high. Going out onto the circuit first of all is the Force India of

:49:30.:49:34.

Sergio Perez. Both the Ferraris have made it into the top ten. Alonso

:49:35.:49:38.

leads his team-mate, Raikkonen, to the end of the pit lane. On this

:49:39.:49:42.

beautiful afternoon in the Mediterranean around the streets of

:49:43.:49:47.

Monaco, we are set for a great duel for pole position definitely,

:49:48.:49:51.

between the two Mercedes drivers, but perhaps again the Red Bulls of

:49:52.:49:56.

Ricciardo and Vettel can try and join in. I don't think the Ferraris

:49:57.:50:04.

are quite quick enough to threaten either Mercedes or Red Bull. It

:50:05.:50:07.

would take a Herculean effort to get anywhere near that front row. It

:50:08.:50:11.

really has closed up on the shorter track, but it looks as if Red Bull

:50:12.:50:16.

are the only team, if at all, it can challenge Mercedes. They've got a 12

:50:17.:50:20.

minute session. They should have a couple of sets of tyres available.

:50:21.:50:24.

Some people have already used quite a few sets of the super-softs to get

:50:25.:50:30.

to this point. That means they may only have one brand-new set left

:50:31.:50:34.

available to them. Ferrari definitely having to use the

:50:35.:50:38.

super-soft to get through the first part of qualifying, so less tyres

:50:39.:50:41.

available to them. You were riding on board with Sergio Perez here, as

:50:42.:50:45.

the Mexican build-up to a big attempt. Remember, he did a great

:50:46.:50:49.

job in Bahrain earlier this year. He ended up with a podium finish, his

:50:50.:50:53.

best result and the best result of the team so far this season. Again,

:50:54.:50:57.

he is out qualifying his rated team-mate, Hulkenberg.

:50:58.:51:06.

He has also had a big accident here in the past, so he will want to

:51:07.:51:12.

forget that as he goes on to a flying lap. A clear track ahead of

:51:13.:51:17.

him. The next guy up the road is Magnussen, but he's down at the

:51:18.:51:22.

hairpin. Just about building up what he's learned so far through this

:51:23.:51:26.

session. Any tweaks he could have made to the car, any control,

:51:27.:51:29.

differential, adjust his brake balance and make a front wing

:51:30.:51:33.

adjustment. The tyre pressures have a big influence over the car. The

:51:34.:51:39.

mechanical spring rate of the car is as much controlled by the tyre

:51:40.:51:42.

pressure as it is by the torsion bar suspension may have on these cars.

:51:43.:51:49.

By the time you spot the braking correctly, you've broken the back of

:51:50.:51:54.

the lap now. Can you double-check whether... I've got Kvyat on and out

:51:55.:52:11.

lap. They are short of tyres. There's nobody behind you, mate.

:52:12.:52:19.

They are about the scene sequence as us. Talking about Toro Rosso, they

:52:20.:52:26.

have a Renault engine as well. It looks as though the Renault engine

:52:27.:52:30.

cars might have a slightly different sequence. Talking about maintaining

:52:31.:52:34.

the state of charge in the Renault powered cars is proving to be more

:52:35.:52:37.

of a management programme than for the Mercedes powered cars. I don't

:52:38.:52:41.

know if that's what they are talking about. It highlights how relaxed and

:52:42.:52:46.

detailed the conversation is whilst out there on track. Vettel is only

:52:47.:52:52.

on and out lap, not a hot lap, but, none the less, you can see he's not

:52:53.:52:56.

only trying to find his way out around the lap, he's trying to pick

:52:57.:53:00.

up information about where the gaps. When he's likely to see a car

:53:01.:53:03.

up the road, being able to work out whether they are on a slow lap or

:53:04.:53:07.

charging lap. Jean-Eric Vergne crosses the line and set the initial

:53:08.:53:13.

pace. He's on a set of the super-soft tyres. It's not as quick

:53:14.:53:19.

as he managed on the faster, new tyre in the second part of

:53:20.:53:23.

qualifying. My goodness, it's always good to watch Alonso when he is

:53:24.:53:27.

attacking, and he is certainly attacking the Monaco circuit,

:53:28.:53:30.

bouncing the car over the kerb. Wonderful reactions to keep the car

:53:31.:53:35.

pointing straight forwards rather than bouncing into the barriers.

:53:36.:53:38.

Alonso coming around to complete the lap. Also, I believe, on a scrub set

:53:39.:53:44.

of tyres. A very impressive lap. That was a new set, he went straight

:53:45.:53:51.

out on a new set. He is fastest for the moment, Raikkonen goes second

:53:52.:53:53.

fastest for the moment, Raikkonen goes second-fastest. That was on a

:53:54.:53:58.

scrub set. Going on. Hamilton is flying on track at the moment. Let's

:53:59.:54:05.

see what Rosberg does. Fastest about Hamilton, can he beat that? He's got

:54:06.:54:09.

a fast middle sector, it's going to be very close between them. No, not

:54:10.:54:16.

quite this time. 59,000th of a second on the first attempt to take

:54:17.:54:20.

this pole position. Was Berg claims initial honours but there are still

:54:21.:54:25.

six and a half minutes to go. -- Rosberg. Hamilton was tentative

:54:26.:54:29.

through the last turn. That is crucially where Rosberg is keeping

:54:30.:54:36.

the advantage. Vettel not quite as quick as his team-mate. Magnussen in

:54:37.:54:40.

the McLaren. Also Mercedes powered. He has done extremely well to get

:54:41.:54:44.

into the top ten with the McLaren. He gets it cleanly out of the last

:54:45.:54:49.

corner as well. Let's see where this puts him in the order, eighth for

:54:50.:54:54.

the moment. Behind Jean-Eric Vergne, ahead Perez and Kvyat for

:54:55.:54:58.

now. Kimi Raikkonen in Ferrari, looking to try and improve the time

:54:59.:55:04.

on a new set of these super-soft tyres. Podiums here in his victory

:55:05.:55:11.

of 2005, but again in 2003 and then in 2009. The last couple of years

:55:12.:55:15.

with Lotus not been quite so successfully finished, ninth and

:55:16.:55:19.

10th. Last year he just to be claimed that 10th place on the last

:55:20.:55:23.

lap of the Grand Prix to continue what was a remarkable sequence of

:55:24.:55:27.

point-scoring finishes. He just managed it here in Monaco last year.

:55:28.:55:31.

But he's not back with Ferrari. Never won this race when he was at

:55:32.:55:35.

Ferrari. It was only with McLaren that he took that victory in 2005.

:55:36.:55:41.

He builds up his pace, just coming up to the last part of the lap to

:55:42.:55:46.

get that crucial exit out of the last corner. A cloudless sky in

:55:47.:55:51.

Monaco. The final two or three minutes of qualifying, the

:55:52.:55:55.

crescendo. It could well be the deciding moments of this year's

:55:56.:56:00.

Grand Prix. Crossed the line, Kimi Raikkonen onto his flying lap.

:56:01.:56:06.

Currently sixth fastest. The entry looked committed, he looked a bit

:56:07.:56:12.

hesitant on the exit. Through Casino. Nice, early first apex.

:56:13.:56:19.

Dropping off over the rise. Moves around to go over the hump. Tidy so

:56:20.:56:29.

far. 20.04 in that first sector. Similar to Magnussen. Alonso is not

:56:30.:56:33.

pushing on this lap, interestingly. He's going to wait for the next one

:56:34.:56:38.

by the looks of it. Meanwhile, Vettel has been told to stay on

:56:39.:56:42.

setting charge 13, it's the only way we are going to deal with the

:56:43.:56:45.

problem. It is definitely some sort of electrical energy problem that

:56:46.:56:50.

Vettel was having. Vettel saying, OK, it's feeling OK at the moment.

:56:51.:56:54.

Maybe they are managing it correctly and he's going to be able to put in

:56:55.:57:01.

a good lap. Nice and tidy through the Chicane, just bounces left,

:57:02.:57:03.

bounces right. The second last corner. Didn't look as good through

:57:04.:57:10.

the lower speed. A bit wide on the turn there. He is fighting it. He

:57:11.:57:18.

lost a bit of time on the exit. He is still sixth with that, a

:57:19.:57:22.

fractional improvement in time. But he is still some way off Alonso,

:57:23.:57:29.

some six tenths of a second off Alonso's time from earlier. Rosberg

:57:30.:57:32.

building up to a lap. Currently fastest, but will he stay there or

:57:33.:57:36.

Will Lewis Hamilton snatch it away once again, as we have seen him do?

:57:37.:57:41.

But not last year, Hamilton beaten by his team-mate here, as they went

:57:42.:57:46.

to go one, two on the front row, Rosberg taking the advantage. Let's

:57:47.:57:55.

ride on board with him here. Let's see what this first sector gives us.

:57:56.:57:59.

He's gone straight on! He's going to run out of time to put in another

:58:00.:58:04.

lap. 30 seconds to go. He won't get back to the line. It will depend on

:58:05.:58:11.

Hamilton's final lap now. Hamilton has just started. There is a yellow

:58:12.:58:16.

up in that area. They will get the car moved pretty quickly. Keep an

:58:17.:58:19.

eye on him, because he's been breathtakingly fast here this

:58:20.:58:32.

weekend on several laps, but can he really apply any pressure now in the

:58:33.:58:35.

dying moments of this session? Look at that, the car moving around, such

:58:36.:58:37.

commitment. The first sector is not good enough, though, to tenths down.

:58:38.:58:40.

Maybe a bit closer than he has been by about ten. He has qualified well

:58:41.:58:43.

this year, can he do it again? I don't think it will be enough. He

:58:44.:58:48.

comes across the line and he stays third. Third fastest but Daniel

:58:49.:58:59.

Ricciardo --. I think Hamilton has backed out of it. He has. He had to

:59:00.:59:04.

pass that area and yellow flags. Hamilton has been beaten to pole

:59:05.:59:07.

position in Monaco. He still doesn't have that first-ever pole in

:59:08.:59:12.

Monaco. Despite Nico Rosberg making a mistake, it's all come down to

:59:13.:59:17.

their initial run. It is Rosberg who has taken back to back Monaco polls.

:59:18.:59:21.

In the end, it was a little bit of an anti-climax because it was Berg

:59:22.:59:27.

made the mistake, Hamilton was unable to challenge, maybe because

:59:28.:59:32.

of the yellow flags, and Rosberg has emerged as the pole winner. He has

:59:33.:59:37.

ended the mini sequence will Lewis Hamilton. It means he has taken his

:59:38.:59:41.

second pole position of the year. It is 2-1 to him in dry conditions,

:59:42.:59:45.

even if Hamilton has had the edge over all this season. The sixth pole

:59:46.:59:54.

position of his career and the first back-to-back pole-sitter in Monaco

:59:55.:59:59.

since Fernando Alonso did it in 2006 and 2007. But Alonso did it for two

:00:00.:00:04.

different teams. Rosberg has achieved what he set out to, despite

:00:05.:00:08.

the little error. I wonder how Lewis Hamilton is feeling right now. I can

:00:09.:00:17.

see Lewis on the far side, stepping away from the car. It has been taken

:00:18.:00:21.

away from him, that position he wanted.

:00:22.:00:25.

You have to say, Rosberg got his car out of the way as much as he could.

:00:26.:00:29.

But the yellow flags were always going to fly when there is a car

:00:30.:00:34.

down the escape road. Hamilton is quietly looking away.

:00:35.:00:39.

Well, that is the story then. Rosberg has taken pole position here

:00:40.:00:43.

in Monaco for the second year in a row. Lewis Hamilton was unable to

:00:44.:00:47.

challenge at the end because of the yellow flags. Once again Daniel

:00:48.:00:54.

Riccardio outqualified Vettel. And Ferrari are in team formation.

:00:55.:01:01.

A brilliant effort from Toro Rosso. And the two rookies are into the top

:01:02.:01:07.

ten, Perez in tenth position and Nico Hulkenberg in 11th.

:01:08.:01:14.

Massa was out of luck today along with Bottas.

:01:15.:01:20.

Well, Mercedes continue the pole position whitewash of the season.

:01:21.:01:25.

This was the replay of Rosberg's mistake, David.

:01:26.:01:28.

He looked to turn in and thought against it. He locked up, at this

:01:29.:01:33.

point he is probably in full panic mode of how to get back out. But the

:01:34.:01:38.

yellow flags were out and it was all over. Nico, it was good to get that

:01:39.:01:48.

time. We saw a mistake but you must be relieved you held on to it? I

:01:49.:01:53.

thought it was over in that moment. I really excuse myself to the team.

:01:54.:01:57.

I thought that was it. But then of course I blocked Lewis

:01:58.:02:05.

on his lap. I don't know if he was up or not or whatever. So a pity

:02:06.:02:10.

from that side but happy that it worked out.

:02:11.:02:14.

Lewis said he was set for pole position but the yellows stopped him

:02:15.:02:19.

in his tracks. You are the one with the clear view tomorrow? In

:02:20.:02:23.

hindsight it worked out for me like that but that is not the way that I

:02:24.:02:27.

want to get a pole position of course.

:02:28.:02:32.

So, Nico Rosberg not celebrating in the normal way and those people who

:02:33.:02:36.

will be saying rightly or wrongly, that he did it deliberately to slow

:02:37.:02:40.

the yellows down. So let's have a look. David, talk us through your

:02:41.:02:46.

thoughts. If you look at the position, he is in the same position

:02:47.:02:52.

as the first pedestrian crossing. Moving on to the pedestrian bridge,

:02:53.:02:58.

the line is as near as within a few centimetres but where it changes,

:02:59.:03:04.

watch the pole lap. The mistake lap he saws away from the steering

:03:05.:03:08.

wheel, from the right to the left to the right. That seems out of

:03:09.:03:12.

character, give than the front tyre has not locked up. Then when he

:03:13.:03:18.

commits to the corner and locks the tyre, he goes down the escape road.

:03:19.:03:22.

The stewards will want to know what was going on with the car. If he had

:03:23.:03:27.

a puncture and you looked at the camera and the steering, that is to

:03:28.:03:33.

explain how he loses the control of the car but we are not aware of a

:03:34.:03:38.

membering alcan issue. But the save your, he drove to the end of the

:03:39.:03:43.

safety road and out of harm's way. Yes, there was a yellow flag but it

:03:44.:03:50.

is not like Schumacher getting past the car in the corner.

:03:51.:03:55.

It is not in his nature? No, it is not in his nature. I am not sure

:03:56.:04:03.

that he would have been certain of a yellow flag. Earlier, Massa and

:04:04.:04:09.

Ericsson had a similar shunt. They removed the cars. They were parked

:04:10.:04:13.

there. I have to give him the benefit of the doubt. I do not

:04:14.:04:16.

believe he would have known had there been a yellow flag.

:04:17.:04:21.

Good point, Mercedes are being investigated by the stewards. Let's

:04:22.:04:26.

hear from Lewis now. Lewis, mixed emotions, it is not

:04:27.:04:32.

your turn this time? Yes. It is motorsport.

:04:33.:04:37.

How disappointed were you when you saw the yellow flag? Could you have

:04:38.:04:43.

done it? Could you have gotten pole position? It doesn't matter, I

:04:44.:04:46.

should have done it in the lap before.

:04:47.:04:51.

And Nico explain he went straight on, have you seen it? I haven't. But

:04:52.:04:58.

I will look into it when I get back. Well, we are joined by Daniil Kvyat

:04:59.:05:03.

from Toro Rosso. What a great day for you. A terrific result

:05:04.:05:09.

qualifying in the ninth, it did not start so well, though, did it? I

:05:10.:05:13.

think that I have white hairs after qualifying. It was tricky. There is

:05:14.:05:19.

a lot going on in Monaco. Especially in Q 1. I am looking at it now. A

:05:20.:05:24.

lot of running. But I think that I still managed to enter the Q 3 after

:05:25.:05:29.

the accident. So that was fine. What was the cause of that. Is that

:05:30.:05:36.

to do do with the recoverable energy or braking late over the raise? I

:05:37.:05:42.

did not consider that the prime time does not give us an option. I took

:05:43.:05:46.

the bump. It is a question of a little bit of space. It is the first

:05:47.:05:50.

time in the weekend that I took the corner in such a way and the rear

:05:51.:05:57.

could not take it. Bearing in mind now that you have

:05:58.:06:01.

qualified, fantastic. Did you think it was all over at this stage? I

:06:02.:06:05.

tried to see if the suspension was fine. .

:06:06.:06:09.

I knew that the front wing was gone. But I kept cool, I said that the

:06:10.:06:14.

suspension was fine, there was a flat spot but it is important that

:06:15.:06:21.

we can carry on. You were calm on the radio, we saw that. An

:06:22.:06:26.

intelligent day today, considering you have never been around here, we

:06:27.:06:33.

wish you all the best for the race. Daniel Riccardio, I wonder if you

:06:34.:06:37.

are disappointed not to have front row? I know you wanted it? I am

:06:38.:06:44.

disappointed, to be honest. He thinks that I did a good job.

:06:45.:06:49.

But, frustrated. I think that the second round in Q 3

:06:50.:06:53.

was the lap that could have been the one. It was looking good until turn

:06:54.:06:59.

eight. Then I lent on the car to hope that it would throw me around

:07:00.:07:04.

the corner but I lost the rear. That was the lap over. Clearly

:07:05.:07:09.

disappointing but still an impressive lap. You seemed strong

:07:10.:07:14.

consistently around the lap. You could maybe take us on a lap. Take

:07:15.:07:22.

us away. So, turn one is bumpy on the entry. It is easy to overshoot

:07:23.:07:27.

as we have seen the cars doing this week. So it is about getting a clean

:07:28.:07:35.

exit there. Carrying the speed into turn three. It is easy to overshoot

:07:36.:07:42.

that as well. Breaking into turn five. On the second run I was mega

:07:43.:07:48.

through there before having a moment in turn out. Then here on the kerbs,

:07:49.:07:54.

a bit of undersears, trailing with the left front and trying to get out

:07:55.:07:59.

of there clean. Through the tunnel, you put on the night shades and

:08:00.:08:04.

break for the chicane. The car is good on a braking hill. Rear on the

:08:05.:08:13.

stable. Good on the kerbs. This is my favourite part of the

:08:14.:08:19.

track, turn 12, then the Swimming Pool is awful. Then into the... I

:08:20.:08:24.

don't know the name of this chicane, maybe you can tell us? It is just

:08:25.:08:29.

the chickain. Well, here I was a little scrappy.

:08:30.:08:34.

The last sector has been strong for me this week. But I sound miserable

:08:35.:08:39.

but I think that the second run would have a little nicer.

:08:40.:08:45.

Daniel, we have to ask you the all-important question, Vuelta a

:08:46.:08:47.

Espana, four times the world champion, you still continue to

:08:48.:08:51.

outqualify him. What is this saying to your mind at the moment? It is

:08:52.:09:06.

nice to be ahead again -- Vettel. It is frustrating. I don't care

:09:07.:09:11.

where he is. I feel we could have been closer to the pole position.

:09:12.:09:15.

But that is eating me up. But in general I have been happy with how I

:09:16.:09:20.

have performed this week. So that is good. Let's see what happens

tomorrow. I think that will be exciting.

:09:25.:09:27.

We wish you all the best for tomorrow. Apparently there may be a

:09:28.:09:31.

chance of a shower. You never know. OK.

:09:32.:09:37.

Let's hear from Sebastian. Sebastian, a lot of problems?

:09:38.:09:43.

Unfortunately, yes. We have lost the ability to use the

:09:44.:09:49.

electric power to discharge the car. We didn't get it back. In the end we

:09:50.:09:56.

ran it in a mode that was fine but surely not as good as it should be.

:09:57.:10:03.

But the most important is that the car was quick.

:10:04.:10:06.

I thought we could give the Mercedes a hard time but we struggled

:10:07.:10:11.

ourselves and the gap was too big. We have the news that the stewards

:10:12.:10:15.

will take no further action regarding the per Mercedes enquiry.

:10:16.:10:23.

What would they have gone through with this investigation? The

:10:24.:10:28.

stewards have the opportunity to investigate anything that they feel

:10:29.:10:31.

should be looked at. They have done that here. There is a time period.

:10:32.:10:38.

It sometimes feel a little long but it gives the teem an opportunity to

:10:39.:10:42.

bring together the opportunity and present it. They have the radio

:10:43.:10:52.

cameras, the television cameras, the radio conversations, and the people

:10:53.:10:57.

explaining how things were so that you can reference every lap. You can

:10:58.:11:03.

ref rans last year or anyone else. Once they have gone through all of

:11:04.:11:06.

that, they will do that because of the importance of this incident,

:11:07.:11:10.

then they will finally make a decision. That is that we have heard

:11:11.:11:14.

that Nico Rosberg is starting in pole position.

:11:15.:11:19.

So, pole position, are you happy with that? I think so. Clearly it

:11:20.:11:24.

had to be investigated but why it took so long, I think that is

:11:25.:11:32.

another matter. Will this affect Lewis? Well he

:11:33.:11:37.

really wanted to lay down the marker to Nico. In the end, Nico grew up on

:11:38.:11:43.

these streets. He delivered. That is where the disappointment is coming

:11:44.:11:47.

from for Lewis Hamilton. And Marcus Ericsson is starting at

:11:48.:11:52.

the back of the grid to tomorrow? He has a penalty and two points on the

:11:53.:11:57.

licence. It was called straight away he would receive something and

:11:58.:11:59.

correctly so. So, the battle is on with the

:12:00.:12:05.

Mercedes boys, one against. Suzi, the gloves are off. This is a

:12:06.:12:12.

war zone. The Hamilton/Rosberg situation can only get better, more

:12:13.:12:17.

juicy and more exciting. Now, let's remind ourselves of how

:12:18.:12:22.

the grid is to line up for tomorrow's race:

:12:23.:13:10.

So, that is how the grid lines up for the all-important race tomorrow.

:13:11.:13:17.

Eddie, who will be celebrating? I think that the Mercedes cars will

:13:18.:13:21.

have a coming together and Ricardo will dive through and take the

:13:22.:13:25.

laurels that are here. That is interesting. Catch the highlights

:13:26.:13:31.

with us tomorrow on BBC One at 5. 05pm. So, it is Nico Rosberg who

:13:32.:13:36.

edged out Lewis Hamilton today. Thank you very much guys, thanks for

:13:37.:13:38.

watching. We will see you tomorrow. MUSIC: "Kickin' It Up"
