Episode 3 Golf: PGA Championship

Hello. 12 months ago this was the setting for a grand finale in the

BMW PGA Championship, featuring the world's top two players, and this

forbidding stretch of water, a stretch of water which ultimately

had a big say in Luke Donald's victory, but fast-forward a year

and at a halfway mark of the flagship event, it is an local boy

from check see, three miles down the road, who is upstaging

everybody -- Chebsey. James Morrison has eagled the final hole

twice already and is to win all the right things in his own manner, so

to speak. Grubbing up watching it as a kid, it has been a dream to

play -- growing up. It has great history and it is a great golf

Drysdale is leading the chase at 8- under. In the group of 6-under par,

the likes of world number 10 Justin Rose and Branden Grace from South

Africa, who has already won three titles on his first year in the

European Tour. It is the world number 236 leading the way. This

morning, world number one, Rory McIlroy, hard at work on the

practice ground but not for this event. He missed the halfway cut.

Taken together with his performance in Florida a couple of weeks ago,

at Sawgrass, it is the first time in two years that the Northern

Irishman has missed two cuts in a I think maybe I have taken my eye

off the ball a little bit so I need to go back and work hard and try to

get it back to the level that it list who have also gone missing

this weekend. Darren Clarke, Graeme McDowell, Martin Laird and Padraig

Harrington a amongst them. 72 players remain to contested and

fight it out for a whopping first prize, the biggest on the European

Tour, although the �600,000. -- of over �600,000. To go with the

sunshine, we have the mischievous wind that was gusting through the

trees yesterday afternoon and causing havoc with the late

starters. It has proved tricky again today. The best round today

has come from Ian Poulter, 3-under par, a 69. The leaders went out at

1:40pm and it has been lively. Two Spaniards have set out in

positive spirits. Quiros has only one top-ten finish to his name this

season but he has moved 8-under. He has since given that shot back. His

compatriot is having a storming season, Cabrera-Bello. He moved 8-

under. Luke Donald is now the favourite to successfully defend

this title and this was a composed start from the world number two.

After finding a bunker at the first, he is steeling himself for the

rounds ahead. James Morrison, at the leader, gotten unsettling miss.

He dropped a shot and has found he would shrink his advantage to three

shots straight away. This went down to two when David Drysdale got this

on the second hole to move 9-under. One of Luke Donald's steady starts.

This approach was much more spectacular, and it landed

beautifully. An eagle opportunity there. But he had to settle for a

birdie to move 9-under. Our leader, this is James Morrison,

duck hook. I spoke about an unsettling start. That will not

help in the slightest. He is looking a bit nervous out there

understandably. He has half of Surrey following him. Morrison in

trouble at the fourth, as we saw there. He has a two shot advantage

over Luke Donald and David Drysdale. Cabrera-Bello is having a

spectacular season. Here is James Morrison at the fourth. He has had

to take a drop from the trees. It goes from bad to worse for the

young man. He could have been a top-class cricketer but instead

decided he would exchange the willow for the woods. Oh dear.

Another hook. Things really uneasy and unsettled for James Morrison.

Not the start that he was hoping for. He had a four shot cushion to

sleep on and clearly he has not slept very comfortably. Let's get

out on the course come up with Andrew Coltart on the way but for

now, it is Ken Brown and our newly elected member of the World Golf

Hall of fame, Peter Alliss. Thank you very much and thank you

for all of your charming letters but I am still there for a modest

fellow that I was a few weeks ago. It is a great honour. Driving this

morning, I thought it was a lovely day but I got here and it was

definitely windy. The course is very tricky indeed. Scoring has

been quite high. Only two or 3- under par. Morrison is having an

decided to play a provisional. And this was the next one. It followed

in the same way. This only tells me that his golfing brain his adult

early on in the third round. -- is messed up early on in the third

round. Yes, he is looking for the ball. There is a fence line...

Yesterday, he was looking so good. Meanwhile, Justin Rose on the 7th.

That was not a very good chip. This is a very splendid course, made

even more difficult as the years go buy. I am not sure why golf courses

have to be made very, very difficult. It doesn't make it much

fun for the high handicap. I don't understand it. The big boys seem to

be frightened of part. Let's say this mode was continued in the

Olympics, we would have Usain Bolt running in Wellington boots in the

100 metres! Cabrera-Bello is doing a score of round about 70

today, perhaps better, will make joint leaps at the score board. One

of those was Ernie Els, going along very nicely, and so is this feller,

Cabrera-Bello. The average finishing school so far today is

75.2. The best round was back Ian Poulter, 69. So it is a tough day

with firm greens, not particularly fast. How strong is the breeze? As

strong as yesterday afternoon? certainly is, Ken. This is a very

slow putt for Donald. Back into the That does not look too good. There

is no way he can play it from there. Which ball is it? That is his

second shot. He will be dropping three and playing four. I think he

will be better off to go back to where he played a shot from.

Andrew Cotter has joined us in the box, on a mission of mercy. Yes,

indeed. Justin Rose for par. He rolls that in nicely. He will have

to do that a few times around here. A lot of scrambling is required. I

think that is why Luke Donald is a couple of shots in the first

three holes. He has hit two stinkers into the woods on the

left-hand side. Cabrera-Bello for his par, nicely holed. Spaniard, in

good form this year, top 10 in the Race to Dubai, 8-under, and any

score around 70 will be very good. Luke Donald at the 5th. Another

little test for Luke Donald. He faced one on the first hole, from

12 feet for par. Good approach putt, some 26 yards. They cannot see this

one being outside the hole. Stays very still over his putts normally.

Beautiful putter, looks so comfortable. You could see many

good putt does he look uncomfortable. I have seen a few

club golfers that look uncomfortable -- good putters.

When we did find the first ball we didn't know it was out of bounds,

which is probably just as well because him might have taken a few

shots to get out. He would be playing five now, his 5th shot on a

going on nicely, in control of all his senses and faculties. A good

drive at the first hole, a couple of slips, and now this monumental

failure here at the 4th hole. His mind will be racing thinking all

sorts of silly things. Wishing he could go back and start again. This

will test your character. Try to get round in 76 or better, a good

start. Only the 4th hole and you feel absolutely shattered. But this

is how you learn. It is the easiest hole, all he could do was chase it

to the front of the green. Maybe he had a very bad line but managed to

do it twice. Well short of the green. Didn't attempt to play the

right shot. He is learning how to play. Choices galore regards the

club. Is that a three-wood or this is the next group out. The

last group out still on the 4th, a shot, it rescue club for Luke

Donald, bunkers protect some 50 yards of this fairway from to 50,

you're wondering what Luke Donald needs to get to world number one,

everybody what you're made of, when you regroup, forget all that if you

can, so in a very good position, and start for a round from here.

That is a nice view looking on to this reshaped 8th green, just was

the edge of the fairway on the right. -- just towards. Would you

make of this, Ken? It is difficult. You see the green perched up, the

water on the left-hand side. It looks like Augusta. Do you like it?

No. Dead best about, yes or no. -- Don't mess about. I don't like that

on the left, I agree with you. I think they have softened it a bit.

Good shot from Justin Rose. looks like it has been imposed on

the land. You have to use the land, if you don't you have to pick it up.

It looks a bit artificial. This is not a Jackson Pollock. Drysdale on

the 5th. Wind off the left, left poll position, not easy to get

close. That is a 7-iron. 182 yards today. Sticks there. Undulations in

pairings. The last group, James Morrison and David Drysdale.

Andersson Hed, the two Swedes together, Branden Grace, the three-

times winner from Sir paprika, Francesco Molinari, Marcel Siem

with Alfred Quiros -- Alvaro Quiros. Drysdale and Morrison who has to

kind of golf course we have. 64 yesterday but it you get in the

wrong position it is a beast of a golf course. This is not an easy

the pins and hit the greens. Look at the simplicity of the swing with

Just using it up there, just left himself a wedge in, good angle into

the back right flag. Peter Lawrie and Luke Donald separated by six

concentrate on one shot at a time. Peter Lawrie, keep an eye on him if

you see him chipping, it is a joy to watch him. Luke Donald, just

and David Drysdale who are leaving. Luke Donald knows that a top eight

finish will take him back to the world number one spot. Still a lot

sweeping changes to this course. He has had a good week. Paul Reed is

hole, if you have to be accurate. It is all about position. This is

part of the East Course. Ernie Els spotted that if we look over there,

there is 80 that can be used to play in the other direction and it

has worked out very well for the big boys -- a tee. Now he has to

settle. Show us what you can do. James Morrison found a bunker on

the first and on the second. Lots of bunkers on this hole, let's hope

line, where they move across. And big kind of Arabian night plots.

They slide them across. It is very clever. Beautifully done. You see

where the camera is on the left, there is the narrow Railway there

and the slight it across so it looks like a hedge and it is very

well done. Not many of them around a golf course! Railway to know

group, most of the crowd for Luke this green. That was never hard

enough. He will wait for that to is how much deeper the bunkers are.

The quality of the work, Ken, his first-class. They have given them

cricketer. Crash bang wallop. Sometimes it is wonderful. Bubba

Watson is a bit like that. They play the most wonderful shots and

waiting for. He had a good tee shot. The pin is towards the back of the

green, plenty of landing area. don't think they are being

distracted by people through the trees on the 10th. They have

thinned them out a lot. The trees. With these modern types of grass,

you need sun light and warmth otherwise nothing will grow.

world apart in terms of experience. Donald is entirely in his comfort

zone. This is way he feels he belongs. Morrison's third shot.

Justin Rose had a dizzy spell, he suffers from vertigo. He was

seriously contemplating not playing. love to see a bit of a showdown

between Rose and Donald. Doing battle on the final day. Drysdale

to the bottom. You can hit quite a long drive. There is a bank on the

left-hand side, a boundary, you can sneak by it. He is going with the

side, finds the putting surface. The green is firming up. They seem

to take a bit of a hop forward. wasn't a very good springboard for

it over the trees. The trees are not really in the way for Grizedale

and not really in the way for James Morrison either. That is the big

slope. Quite a small area of flat green at the top of the hill. If

you hit it too hard it is very easy to go through the back and the

reason heather up there. Peter Lawrie since an 8-iron on its way

into this stiff breeze. Another class shot by the Irishman, he has

looked very comfortable out here in this penultimate match with Luke

opening two days, hasn't dropped a stroke yet. James Morris and hoping

to land this at the front. Because he will come out fairly low, chase

it to that back hole position. A 9- iron. Got a flyer. Perfect, what a

time he had a bit of good fortune. Good hit, good result.

under par. Luke Donald is looking increasingly comfortable. A

has won around Wentworth on this championship. That is combination

the 11th hole. What a fantastic scene. Cabrera-Bello's his second

bare? That does not look very to playing shots from difficult

conditions. That may be unplayable. Justin Rose ahead at the 11th hole.

It sounded a little heavy. The only advantage that they have got, is

they are both putting up hill. Talking about the ladies of Royal

Turnberry, the Woman's Association are having a tournament tomorrow.

Nearly 40 clubs are taking part. That is some great stuff for the

ladies of North Wales. He is miles off line. This is going to take

some Ernie Els magic here. A brilliant effort. He tried to check

it off the fringe. That was virtually impossible. Very

have to hit it slowly, but you never seem to hit it hard enough.

He is currently one under for his round. Here is Ernie Els's putting

for a birdie. He doesn't go, that's a five. That is a pretty good round

of golf. The wind was going pretty hard when he went out. Very steady,

good, solid golf. The 4th shot on the 8th for James Morrison. That is

going left, I cannot believe what I'm witnessing! That went in the

water. It is very difficult to say anything constructive. It is very

sad. Sport can be called. -- very wicked. It is all in your head.

Obviously he can play, but it is the Devine's in your head, once you

can hit shots, that is the one thing you have to control. It is

the demons in your head. Tiger Woods is going parade, Rory McIlroy

is learning about life. Absolutely critical today, you have to find

the fairway. You have to find the middle right of the green as well.

You cannot force a birdie out of it. Nothing wrong with a four at 7, 8,

9 on this course. It is a shame for David Drysdale. He was hardly

missing a shot today. He seemed to get that one. Hears mishit that one

as well, it's in the water. Oh, my God! The pair of them are not

helping each other along, they are dragging each other down at the

moment. There is a little old lady down there somewhere with a net

pulling all those balls out the water. They are all kinds of rounds.

-- brands. Starting left, not going to come back. That was for the lead.

He's going to stay at 9 under. Justin Rose, on the 12th. He got

through that one or right. -- all right. That could be OK. He will

have a clear view of the green. The tree on the left and a jest

implements his line. -- may have just implements. A very

unconvincing putt on the 9th. taps in. Out in 33. Here we are

back in the drop zone. Drysdale, he's sick -- 6th shot. Drysdale was

one under until this hole. He is not having a bad round, but this

bank here, you could rely on it in time gone by. If you land a little

higher, the ball will pitch in, and then go trickling down. At number

10, missing on the right is better, waiting on the 10th, but now back

holes. This was a Queudrue ball bogey, and a triple bogey at the

to do. Keep aiming for a little cut and the hooks. They are like other

today. -- a bit tougher today. Peter Lawrie looking down to the

green and it gives you an idea of how the 12th green is elevated. It

is very awkward, you have to land it on the plateau and hold it long

a couple of bogeys. 3-over for his round, it started 6-under. He likes

to show his emotions. He has always been a fiery character. At last, he

hard. The green is all but clear. It will be interesting to see how

these players cope now, particularly Peter Lawrie, because

this is the first time that he has had to wait to play. He is on the

right hand side of the fairway. An ideal situation, looking up the

fairway towards the green. 224 yards. It looks like he has a 4-

iron rescue shot. He has been swimming beautifully so far. --

The scoring is interesting. I was looking at the leaderboard and

there are no more than about 12 places to have been under-par or

finishing on par. When you compare this to the Open Championship when

the wind blows, it is a double, but they are making very hard work of

it. Luke Donald, floating along the sides of the trees. Nicely played.

get out under the par of 35. Cabrera-Bello, look how much he has

from the greens afterwards, saying he wanted more water put on them.

People forget that we live in northern Europe and if you do not

have a spring time that is kind, it is very hard to make the grass grow.

Even seemingly wonderful climates have their problems, too hot, too

cold, whatever. We had a cold and dry March and nothing is growing,

then lashes of rain, and it is only in the last few days that we have

youngsters in the crowd this year, Andrew. A lot of children. I c the

BMW Championship this year, their official charity is the Children's

Trust in Tadworth, and all sorts of things are going on -- I can see

that. The crowd have been asked to make a donation of �1 each to the

fund. So many sponsors and play his do things for charity, unheralded.

Richard Sterne the has had a very poor season but is going along

nicely here. Ian Poulter is on 3- under par. Further down, James

Morrison stands out there 9-over par for his round and 3-under for

the tournament. That would have been an eagle for Peter Lawrie.

That was very clumsy. He has played so gently and quickly and

conservatively. It comes as a bit of a shock the way he rushed that

one. Somebody is smacking one away at the 13th, we are very close to

course. From here, they go 30 yards across to the 13th and then start

the run to home. Donald has had a few lent the putts

today but he has never put himself under any pressure for the second

putts -- lengthy putts. This is a bit uphill. This is for eagle.

Realistically, he will be very pleased to get this up to a close

range to tap in. So simple. No hurry and no joking. That will be

flawless today. The only chink in the armour in that he has missed a

his confidence a boost because he has played beautifully and really

it has been a matter of Donald sticking with him rather than the

other way round. This to regain the quite a long way away but that is

only a par and it is very frustrating when you hit two

under-par today out of the 72. Only half a dozen have broken the par.

69 is the best score of the day commit Ian Poulter, early this

Luke Donald, as they head back into the wind's for their final six

front. He has left himself a very difficult putt. I created that

tower and the tree on the right, somewhere between there you may get

probably the busiest bunker on the course, Peter. The flag is in a

They seem to have a fetish for making golf courses as difficult as

they possibly can. Whether they are terrified of people breaking par by

too many, I have no idea. But what does it matter? Sometimes I think

they make things too difficult. Imagine seeing the 100 metres being

run with people in Wellington boots. Making it difficult for them!

Cabrera-Bello was fortunate just to miss the bunker on the left. The

difficulty this afternoon is that there is no consistency with the

wind. It can be really strong and the next second, there is hardly

any breeze what so were buff. The one thing that does not change is

the rhythm of his swing -- Turnbull in Scotland saying there

is a little gem of a course on the Isle of Bute celebrating its

centenary. Unique that it has only 13 holes. We hope you enjoy the

I don't know. If you are over 50, you should give it up. This has

been marshalled by members from Royal Ascot. Boccia is an

interesting club. This is the oldest course in Berkshire. It used

to be in the middle of the Ascot racecourse and of course they built

their members and new one so they got a pretty good deal. That was a

the 15th, celebrating their 120 feet here. Not quite the same as

Montrose, who was celebrating 450 years of golf are there. Fantastic

celebrations in April this year. Carnoustie, all up round there.

Tremendous golf in the area. 18, -- 1829. This requires a bit of right

best he can manage is catching a glimpse of our camera, 25 yards

right of the flag. He has a 5-iron SOCA he will have to put a lot of

hook spin on to make the distance - - so he will have to. It was a bit

greedy, he turned it too early. sorts of problems. He turned to

earlier. The joint leader is in trouble. Luke Donald is in the

middle of the fairway. The same club for Donald but he is in a

better position. Into the breeze. These last six holes in these

conditions are by far the most difficult part of the golf course.

It must not be short and left, long and right will bounce him, but that

people think he is not flamboyant enough but they say that about

breeze otherwise it would be quite would come and join him. A lovely

little bunker shot. Two shots back. Just got the right speed. A little

faster, bad would not have gone in. Get yourself an ice-cream, charge

it to me. 8 under par. Two shots behind. That is a dusty lie for

Peter Lawrie. He can see the right- hand portion of the green. He is

around 50-60 yards short of the green. He has had some fortune from

the tee shot. Quite a steep bank in front the end. He has to get some

right-to-left movement. If he gets this inside the bunker, the to rain

will help them. He must do no worse than a five. He three-putted the

last hole. He nearly got it in on the edge. Not quite. These

finishing holes are very difficult, it is very easy to drop shot. --

shots. This foray lovely if the re. Beautifully done. Cabrera-Bello

think Royal Wentworth has ever looked so good. I have seen it in

slightly better condition, it has to be said, it is nearly at its

best. As far as preparation goes, it is stunning. It is absolutely

lovely. The crowds are enormous. They are enjoying it. We have

children, ice-cream, everyone is happy. The only people who are

unhappy is the umbrella sells -- sellers. That will have some zip.

chance for a birdie. I have to say, this is a chip that you would fancy

Peter. Not quite crisp enough. Peter Lawrie is a beautiful picture

of the ball. -- striker of a ball. That is a nice haircut. Have you

noticed that footballers don't have a decent haircut any more? They all

look like they have escaped from a chain gang. He has got a real shake

it going on. This may move a little bit. It is all about pace. There

are tears. -- bear it is. confident stroke. His supporters

did their familiar chant. He's leading by two shots. There is an

air of inevitability about Luke Donald. Whenever he plays, there is

a calm this, and a four tee. -- there is a calm air about him, and

authority. He's OK, or if he gets two pars, he will be alright.

Amazing how things have turned around. James Morrison was four

shots clear. He has steady things a bit. -- steadied things a bit.

Branden Grace, he's caught the sand at there. A couple more yards, that

would have been a gem. Alvaro little sip of that golden nectar.

There is our leader. He is at the 14th tee. This hole looks simple

enough, but it has a lot more to it. It is around 180 yards. The green

is big, and there is that big slope. It is not easy. There is no other

hole which gives the players such pause for fought over club

selection -- pause for thought over club selection. If the wind is

against you, it whistles over the top of the grandstand. It is not so

easy to get the right club. At their ears. Has he pulled it? He

has. That is not an easy bunker shot. He is a super bunker player.

Now, this is Cabrera-Bello. He's in a ditch, there is a lateral water

hazard.. He could have gone forward. He chose not to do that. He took

the penalty drop. He could have hit it out of there, but caution is the

option. It is amazing, this 16th hole, how many problems it causes.

We go back to the 14th, there is Peter Lawrie. Luke Donald has

nicked two shots off then, he is trying to get them back. Donald is

was a flop, and they hope for the best. He is at the 4th shot coming

up. -- his fourth shot. That was a bit better. He might drop two shot

like trainers. There are so many styles of footwear and shoes.

he has dropped this very well. with the drop, you don't get much

of a sighting of the green. Hoping it's skips through. This is a big,

wide fairway. There is a lot of room on the right. Players are

going up the left-hand side, and ending up in the stage. -- ditch.

He's trying to bump it up. He will try and look -- he will try and get

it across. He wasted a lot of energy trying to go all the way to

the green. You have to keep up the ratio, you mustn't go in less than

five hours. Slow players are a burning issue at the moment. He

just popped it out, just short of the road. Branden Grace, for a

birdie. He escaped with a five. I have just given a the European

Tour card to look Donald and his caddie -- to Luke Donald and his

caddie. They were trying to ascertain whether he was on the

green. He was able to remove those stones. You have to be quite a lie-

footer there. He's quite a bit above the ball. It would be very

easy to dislodge some sand towards the ball. This sand, or the soil,

it is very stony. That is why they have that rule. It would be

dangerous to hit stones. Look at that! He is a genius. Genius. Such

a wonderful variety of shots he has got. Last year was his year, even

though the major did not come. Justin Rose at the 16th, a nice tee

shot. Just stopped in time. That is a cheeky place to put the flag on

such a windy day. The wind is not much help. They have decided that

Lawrie's ball is not on the green. This will be a speedy effort to

down the 14th. Just coming slightly beautiful bunker shot on the 14th.

He remains in front. Ken Brown is back with us. Looking very

advantage over Peter Lawrie. Aiming to become only the third play in

history to successfully defend the PGA Championship title. Only

the 17th. The 17th tee has been moved a bit forward because it is

going to play into the breeze, but such a demanding tee shot. The out-

of-bounds line is only eight paces to the left of the fairway, and

there it is. But the difficulty at 17 is the way the fairway slopes.

You have to take the out of bounds on because there is a big camber

from left to right and it tends to wander to the right. You will see,

it is amazing. It trickles and trickles all the way down the right

side, so you have to go quite close to the out of bounds. If you get it

just right, you can get the ideal spot but to do that, you are always

thinking, please, not over the fence.

It is almost worth an Oscar! Suddenly and a me! -- an Emmy

bunkers, that. That reminds me of Fred Couples at the 12th on Augusta

when he won that tee, do you remember? It was perched on the

least 50 yards forward. After what we saw yesterday, they needed to do

that playing into the wind. This is Justin Rose with what looks like a

good line to aim that. -- for the green. You can get some idea of the

slope on the fairway, left to right. Always get your attention. You have

to decide the shape you are going to hit and commit the shot. It is a

very hard driving holes. The 18th at Lytham St Annes and Murrayfield,

they have critical tee shots there. This one makes you change things a

be a bit of disagreement between the gallery and the Marshall as to

where Donald's ball crossed the margin of the hazard. He can of

course drop out on the left but it has to be opposite the point

because there are a couple sitting on the bank and if we have the same

shot, we can see it clearly. There they are. They have probably all

moved by now. It should be right opposite that geezer! We need to

see the hazard line. It is not necessarily inside the ditch.
