Episode 4 Golf: PGA Championship

We are into the last hour or so of play here on the third round of the

BMW PGA Championship, at the richest event on the European Tour

and we have been following events throughout the afternoon on BBC One.

You will know it if you are joining us we have had a pretty lively

exchange of places on the leaderboard. James Morrison was the

man who started the day for shot clear of the field. He has dropped

like a stone after 28s. No signs of Jane Morrison. Instead it is look

McDonald he has a cushion. If you were following us on BBC One --

Luke Donald. You will see he had to under par. It is chipping up

beautifully. Ernie Els and Paul Lawrie, they are also in contention.

Bubbling up nicely and we will share the rest of the afternoon

with Ken Brown and Peter Alliss. PETER ALLISS: The big umbrella

shape is the line. Not a bunker in sight, remodelled green. If you

bumps down the left and side -- left hand side. Beautiful. A

- back on the tee. Looking a little anxious, down the left side. Needed

a harder bounce. He will have to hit a very load flat hook to get

round the corner. Did his best to escape from the clutches of the

on the left. We used to play those with a 4-iron. Either a wedge or a

4-iron. Luke Donald, he he is. gives it a mighty launch. Does it

with a relatively simple swing, and it doesn't look as if he generate

enormous power. -- generates. challenging shot here. Way below

the height of the green and when the ball land on the green it slips

away from him quite severely. We need some of that Spanish magic.

look very spectacular when they limit the damage to one dropped

played two or three bunkers, and the ball hasn't been more than

three feet from the hole after he has played. Just a wonderful touch.

I enjoy watching him play enormously. He is not a smash, bang,

wallop fellow. I love the professionalism of his play. One

made to the West Course the 18th has been the most controversial and

he has made another one this year. It has extended the fairway. This

ditch that ran at the bottom used to be at the end of the slope and

the ball could run into it to get a big tee shot. He has levelled this

area out so a nice little plateau of 25 yards. The fairway has been

widened. The bunker they used to be down the right hand side has

disappeared. It allows the place to take the right side down and they

are not going to run into the ditch so they have got a bit of ground to

work with. They have couldn't be these pants -- these pine trees on

the right. He has a more pitbull wanted, given the players a chance

to take on the 18th green. Good on distance, a little bit of slide, a

little bit of left to right. That is miles right, isn't it? He has

gone left? No, he has not. He must have hit that right of the toe cap,

just lapped it up. He started miles right and ended on the left edge.

He is not in any trouble. We got the wind into the face and it feels

a little bit of the right side, so Justin Rose tried to use that wind

and Cabrera-Bello has the power to get their into. 538 yards, if you

want to challenge with the second after it. Oh, no. A very good

moment for Andrew Cotter to return. And very familiar with that kind of

shot. Amazingly Luke Donald can see the flight at 16, only a gap which.

-- the flag. Superbly played, middle of the putting surface.

Landed pretty softly. A if he went straight at it it would ping off

the downslope. All shaping up nicely for those he won to have a

Rose, Donald pairing in the final tomorrow. -- for those who want to

have. This is Peter Lawrie's third shot, he found the bunker and was

too far. See if he can get it, must be spinning, hits the back slope, a

Francesco Molinari. Up and down for a birdie at the 17th. That has to

move, keeps on rolling, not bad. That would take him to five under.

There is the 18th. The scene of some controversial changes by Ernie

Els. In the last hour or so, we the players. He has decided to

deflect it. That is a rather unusually frank from Ernie's

perspective. That is not a hidden word competition. It is very

interesting. It is more of an aerial course now because of that

to redesign. He was going on about spring we have had to get those

greens right. Nearly everyone who has come beyond this flag has left

had one top 10, in 2009. Three wins this year, phenomenal. It is only a

couple of shots around difference. Luke Donald has left himself a

Almost got away from him, a good pace. He's still one shot clear. It

has been a fascinating, beguiling, competition so far. The 17th hole

awaits him. The crowd are shuffling down there on that path. Look at

them. Not so fantastic for the players, there are a bit scared

Rose, a long way back. Just laying up at the 18th. He did not want to

put it in the rough, that is quite tricky. Averaging over par, this

18th hole. That is unusual. Cabrera-Bello found Dave horrendous

That is a strange collection of shots -- socks. He has been a very

successful side kick for Luke Donald. Lawrie, with a great tee

shot, meeting with applause. That is almost ideal, insight of the

green from there, even if the cars reach it. -- he can't reach it. I

wonder whether Luca's had a good break? -- Luke Donald. Justin Rose

weights, after his lay up into the rough. -- waits patiently. Let's

Luke Donald, potentially the world number one, Justin Rose just below

him, the final round pairing, potentially. There are some other

players in a good position. Ian Poulter, he had a 69, he went into

the red figures. James Morrison, his troubles were today. Drysdale

also heading for a round of 82. A little bit further down, Paul

McGinley is starting to find some form again after his injury

Thomas Bjorn, also 78. A lot of scores in the Eighties. Ben Curtis,

tomorrow on BBC Two, not as advertised. It promises to be a

fascinating final day here at the won the final event last year, in

you are going to lay up, that is the perfect spot. Chipping up the

full length of the green. James Morrison, he went out four clear,

now back to two under par. That is a birdie. Yes! He can smile at

something. Something is going his way. He moves to three under par.

That is still 11th place. If he finishes strongly, he can start

short. 120 yards, didn't hit it far -- hard to have to get on to the

mistake not to find the fairway -- Justin Rose. There is always that?

spin. Controlled it pretty well, last eight months or so, Eddie in

the year, amazing after missing his first twenty-one cuts as a pro he

days. Wonderful, the weather has been terrific, the crowds have come.

Pity there's been some critics of the golf course and by that -- the

weather was but running up. Ernie Els was quite vocal this afternoon

saying they should have put some water on but I am sure they will

tonight. The scoring has been very high the last two days with this

sprightly wind blowing around the course. This will be a test. Well

he bomb bit of glamour and hope for the best? He certainly card pitch

green and he has got a chance. Looking for the pieces of grass

that are not too long. At least the forward. He has gone. That could be

score board, I haven't seen one quite as elaborate as that, the

scores, players, ever-changing. Pictures come in on to it and all

sorts of things, miscellaneous information. Fantastic all these

people have been here today. I'm sure they'll going to go over

100,000 for the four days. The practice day, a lot of people here

for that. Just be careful, then people here today. -- there have

got to be 20. Something for everyone, a lot of youngsters here.

Plenty of drinks stands and eyes greens and the tented village has

been superb -- ice-cream. Various sponsors. All the motor cars look

quite magnificent. This is slow. He will give it a fearful whack up the

this season. He was unstoppable in South Africa early on. And this is

torn. The grass is still a very soft. 73. You always hope for a

they player like that, it will always go lowish. Why do they push

He is playing very conservatively, hoping to finish without another

green. He is from Germany. 71, 67. That is a nice shot. Now, Justin

Rose has just have finished his round. Justin, the best round of

the day? This was a pretty big move, how are where were you have of the

changes? My goal today was to not look at the leaderboard. My caddie

told me not to be so interested and involved. The conditions that we

had, I knew there was about hanging in there -- I knew it was about

hanging in there. I saw that some players were dropping away when I

caught a glimpse of it. Today was a staying still day. If you got par,

that was a good round. It is looking like an All England combo

in the last round, that looks good tee. We are great friends, there

will be a lot of banter. There will be a luck to play for. It will be

competitive. Let me get your reaction to those comments from

Ernie Els. He was talking about the greens, he was fuming. Are you

agreement? I enjoyed the battle, to be honest with you. It was a real

test, you could not get the ball close, and he had to think about

how we were approaching the course. It felt like a final day of a major

championship. Golf gets like that some time. The course set-up was

tough, there weren't a lot of birdies. We wish you all the best

for tomorrow. Very diplomatic words there. Coming

to the end of this a third round. The forecast for tomorrow's pretty

good. -- tomorrow is pretty good. Stop it! He is one of the drivers,

as well. He picks up the flags. They are worried about the flags

being stolen. That tells a story. Come on now, Alvaro Quiros. To

finish with a birdie. You are kidding me! Started perfectly. He

ended up taking a 77, it has been a battle. An unrelenting battle.

Justin was quite right, it is a challenge. This is Siem, after Ray

lofted club, he may be laying up. For a birdie. You catch the edge,

they don't going. -- go in there. big carry. He has just put a nice

and nine I N down the centre of the green, getting himself a good lie

towards the flag. -- nine iron. Peter Lawrie never had a decision

to make. The final pair, on the 18. David Drysdale and James Morrison

are both having a day they would like to forget. Especially James

Morrison, two eights on the first nine holes. He's still three under.

A good round tomorrow, he could finish well up there. There are

only ten people ahead of him. Well done. From where these two

players are playing their shots, that flag position looks like it is

in the right bunker. The flags in the grandstand tell the players it

is directly into the wind. It has stopped short, and spun back. If

you get the distance right, you can pitch it right up to the flag. He

has gone back around 6-8 yards. Morrison, his tee shot. Plenty of

heat on that, baby. You can get some real flight with those metal

woods. What I love about Luke Donald, he would put too much spin

on this. It will stop dead. How much as he left himself? He has 110,

Ken. He has played flawlessly, he has been out of position, but he

has never compounded his error. There aren't many better than him

from this distance. That could have done with pitching another 2-3

yards. A chance for a birdie. A good chance. Who is that? They

speak a language with which I'm not too familiar. That means something

to somebody. That is a bit different. He has had a bad day.

Here three-putted. -- he has three- Scott who some people will remember

from his days at the BBC when he introduced pro-celebrity golf, was

out and about for all the golf tournament we used to be. Sadly,

they get less and less. But we are hanging on. It is Peter Lawrie

first. His ball way down on the right. That is a long putt up the

hill. I do think it is delightful to see the young people here.

and boys. They have done a fantastic job of encouraging

youngsters in schools, schools that never even thought of having golf

on the curriculum. And the golf professionals, the club pros, give

up their time to go and teach, get the children introduced to the game,

whether they stay you do it or get the opportunity is another thing. -

- stake in it. At least they have the chance. Most of the green in

shadow now. Long, uphill, right teasing one to finish with. Going

to have six fives in the last nine holes. Three par fives. You don't

make much progress it you are taking 5 every time. Daft -- if you

are taking 5 every time. When he hasn't hold them he is always

frightened to hole, so you do get a certain amount of confidence

watching Luke Donald with the putter. Arms hanging freely away

from his body, arms not cluttered quiet assassin. They are crying

first round of this event. Just fives, a round of 72, pretty good.

Not the most powerful of hitters but a very well put together round

of golf. Just one more per left out there. Down the 18th. What a

thoroughly professional performance. 69 for Luke Donald, defending

champion. Love to see the way he has putted his way round today. --

Drysdale was hoping with but he can finish in style going for the green

on 18 with two. Trouble everywhere. He has found a lot of it today.

the worst place to be in that bunker. Tight one, but if the light

is good, not par. James Morrison, pretty much the same yards closer

Govett two yards closer. 240 yards. We have done just about everything

today, might well have a go for it That is OK, well hit. Awkward one

Royal Lytham St Annes just south of Blackpool, a delightful course. One

of my trade routes. The Open at this week at Lytham St

Anne's. Couldn't happen to a nicer fellow. How do you like that?

near Inverness, Castle Stuart, for the Scottish Open Championship

remember it was dreadful weather, some torrential rain. If we get a

spell of this weather up there it will be absolutely fantastic. We

have got the Women's Open Championship, Royal Liverpool,

September. Pushed back because of the Olympic games. All sorts of

things going on. Football, years ago. PETER ALLISS: Final pair

coming up. COMMENTATOR: James Morrison from England. PETER

ALLISS: He is smiling now. Got a way to a good.. Hasn't been too bad

on the back nine, Ken. For a 44 blows for the front line, yesterday

he was 32. Ethical all game but he has gathered himself together

pretty well. If he could do a 72 or better tomorrow he will not have

ended up to back. First prize is �600,000 second prize �400,000,

16th gets �50,000, so plenty to try Luke Donald is with Andrew Cotter.

A day for grafting, but a good hard own ground. Mentally and physically

it was very tiring. A tough day, the wind blowing as hard as it did

out there today. This course is not easy in good conditions. I really

had to focus hard today. I played the best today that I have of the

first two rounds so that was very pleasing. Explain the difficult

nature of the court and the conditions. It is very tricky. In

amongst the trees. You try and trust the wind direction you know

it is coming from but it does swell. The greens are starting to firm up

in places. It is very difficult to pick the right shot and the right

club selection, and you make a lot of birdies around here, especially

when the wind is blowing. It is going to be a great final group.

You and Justin Rose going head-to- head. It will be tough. I played

with him the first few rounds and he was swinging really nicely. He

played nicely today as well and it will be a good battle with the two

of this. I am excited to get going tomorrow. Almost the same as last

year, could take the world number one spot, fairly nailed on but the

other thing is winning the tournament itself. If all goes well

to borrow and a win the tournament obviously the world ranking takes

care of itself. -- tomorrow and I win. A proud moment personally just

to go a whole year and have the world ranking. Obviously I lost it

a few times here and there. Still, to go by Hawke year and still be

ranked number one is really special. The focus is to try and go out and

win the tournament. And try and defend. 20 very much. -- thank you

missed a couple of nice little shot from these guys. James Morrison has

got a shorter putt for a birdie, so hopefully they can finish in style.

guys make birdie here they are good thing. He is still trying.

This putt for a 36, a very good nine. The even when he was taking

us 8s, not at any stage did his enough! A five to finish. 81 with a

couple of eights. Still in there battling with that birdie at the

16th. A horrible round of 81. A learning experience. We know he can

do it after that wonderful 64 yesterday. Here is the situation as

we head into the final round. Luke Donald about to go back to the

world number one spot, without two- shot cushion over Justin Rose.

Peter Lawrie, he went into the lead for a time, but faltered slightly

in the last few holes. 7-under par. Ernie Els and Paul Lawrie in that

group on 5-under. In the heat of Wentworth we have had heated words

and not towns along the way. Let me remind you that tomorrow we will be
