Episode 5 Golf: PGA Championship

Good afternoon. There is quite a display of hard were here today,

that I have a cup, the Walker Cup, -- the Ryder Cup. This Championship

is on many a players wish list. It is the reward for winning the

flagship event. Who knows who could burst out of the chasing pack to

land this today, or will we, as we did 12 months ago, have an All

England jewel in the Surrey sun? Luke Donald and Justin Rose, he has

been a runner-up and doesn't want He it will be tough. He is a genius.

Certainly going at it. Wonderful. That is a cracking shot. It will be

a good battle between the two of us. And excited. -- I am excited.

The focus is to try to get on and win the tournament. The quiet

head. While many will teed up in the warm nine players pasted totals

Ernie Els'early woes continued, up against a tree from the tee. The

golfing gods are not smiling on him so far. Justin Rose has made a

mistake at the short par 3 second hole. This tee shot will the to him

dropping a shot there. This is definitely not in his game plan

can pile the pressure. But no sign of weakness from Luke Donald who

Montgomerie had great discipline with his irons. He won it three

Yesterday was the first time here played with Luke Donald and he was

watching all the way round to see stuck. Just miscued on the

last five events. He only played four events in 2010, six in 2011,

a terrific return to form for the man who has won five European Tour

9th. There is a little bit of movement in this putt, Peter, but

on the hole it serves to cancel About 18 inches shy I suppose. All

tussle, there caddies are also enjoying it. A nice bonus for them,

if they finish first and second. Do you think they actually get 10% of

the winnings? Day like to think they are more than a Porter, they

are there partners in arms. little short of speed. A long way

to go. Particularly over these closing holes. He has missed one of

these already today. Just left of centre. Writing. -- right in. Nine

holes left. A nasty six at the 4th, apart from that it has been pretty

good. Richard Sterne on the 12th. He absolutely smacks it. It has

gone a little left. It's nearly took somebody out. That is all

right, there. Playing alongside Paul Lawrie, he has abandoned his

driver. He plays with so much more confident, I am absolutely

delighted. -- conference. I always felt he underrated himself. This is

David Higgins, from Ireland. Lookout that. What should drop.

This is the other Lawrie. He is on the front edge of the green. He is

a long way back of the pin. Marcel Siem, playing for par. He is fun to

watch. It seems as if the wind machine has been turned off. Do you

think we are slightly obsessed by it? Yes. If you are a player, you

certainly do get obsessed. He has hit the front of the green. I think

players play the game in a different way 40 years ago. There

was not so much fairway, used to run the ball in. The game is played

more through the air these days. There were some geniuses back then.

They could fly to the ball, and use the ground. -- flight the ball.

Here's Justin Rose. The same club for Rose. He seemed to get through

that one beautifully. A beautiful looking shot. He is swinging very

well, Justin Rose, in particular. haven't seen Ken lately. He has

need to down there. A special thing about Wentworth, look at these

houses, dotted around the edge of the course. This is an old classic.

They remind me of the poem by Rudyard Kipling. England's Gardens,

terraces, the glory of a garden is more than meets the eye. Isn't that

marvellous? A beautiful view, an exceptional place. There is nowhere

quite like Wentworth, particularly on a day like this. Wouldn't you

like to own a house like this? You need to win the lottery! I could

see the owner of that house calling the police! Please do not bring

your dog's on to the course. You do not pay �50 million for a house

just so your dog can stroll out onto the course. -- 15 million.

Professional golf did not start in Europe, the PGA Tour started, the

records have been destroyed to save the innocent. It has been here for

many years, started in 1955, going strong ever since. There are some

lovely little golf courses in north-west Wales. Paul Lawrie here.

You have to be accurate if you want to get close. He is accurate. A

very nice, indeed. -- very nice, indeed. You have to be so much more

accurate, you need the height, it is a lot more difficult to run it

in. There is a narrow entrance between the bunkers. A Sterne just

missed the fairway on the left-hand side. It is almost impossible to

run it inner through that gap, because of the steepness. You can

do it, but you need a touch of good fortune. That is relatively new,

there is a wet area in front of the green, there was talk of putting a

pond in. A long putt for Luke Donald. He has got it! 13 under par.

That is a wonderful putt to hole. The Conference of putting at that

pace, finding the hole, the skill, the accuracy, absolutely wonderful.

I think I might have a few quid on him for the Open. I like long odds,

I don't think I'll get them. He he -- he may as well have slapped

Justin Rose in the face. He hardly looks old enough to shave. Straight

and firm. It has gone away. Not a big drive. Putting in three. A

killer blow. Three down, eight to play. Justin Rose missed a chance

on the 9th, and then that one. He is Sterne, his second. A great shot,

but there is a slope. He is all the way to the back. That deserved a

better fate than that. You will have to push to get down in two

from there. Peter Lawrie, hovering the club, smacks it away. Right

across the middle of the 12 hole. - - 12 hole. Interesting part of the

course, you have the 8th on the left, a great area for the

spectators to congregate over here. He is in fine form. Always a smell

of hamburgers in the air. You know, five minutes ago, when the two

players walked onto the green, and there was a chance for Rose to

sneak in, that was a killer blow. He has to regroup, a has to put in

a good finish, and see if look falters. -- if Luke Donald falters.

You can pick up three shots here, particularly on the last few holes.

It is not over, by along, long way. this championship, Nick Faldo won

at four times, Bernhard three times. We used to play this with a five,

six-iron. It looks good. Steady, steady, steady! That has gone five

or six feet past. Marcel Siem, on the 15th. Stand back, stand back.

That should be a bogey. Lawrie, putting for a three on the 12th. A

good strike. A big swing at the end, up at St Andrews, they Rose

championship for partially sighted players and blind in the first week

of July. They came to my club last year, and some of them play some

wonderful golf. Ernie Els, in trouble again. Trees down the right

second, Lawrie is moving up the table. Going along very nicely

Lucky boy. Very lucky boy. It clattered in the trees. You can do

no worse than a five, I am sure of made his selection. He is three

shots clear now. It will be one of his wedges. He carries three.

Justin Rose carries four. A fairly straightforward shot, 124 yards.

The flag is position very centrally. Fine would not expect to see Justin

Rose put too much spin on this -- I would not. Solid, I would not

expect Luke Donald. He is playing a beautiful game right now, Luke

Donald. Utterly in control and heading back towards the top of the

world rankings and it seems at the moment, towards the successful

defence of this title. Peter Lawrie, interesting swing but a good and

steady rhythm. Not bad but just not turn it on here to try to see if

Donald can falter, and he has to produce his best. A little bit

unlucky. He might have thought that Woods been back down the slope. --

that would spin. We have had an e- mail asking if we would like to see

more US players in this event. You have to be a member of the this

Jiyai Shin, Christopher. It is not an Open Championship -- you have to

be a member of the Association, Christopher, the PGA. We have had

three or four Americans, Major winners. But you have to be a

member of the Association. Branden moment. Rich Beem is the name I was

so desperately searching for. The American who won a PGA Championship

a few years ago. He is a bit the trees, will bring the face up,

and not far over that front left bunker. Oh dear. Ernie, not far

under, 2-under for the event altogether. A good score and a good

paycheck. Lee Westwood is 2-over for his round. Not quite happening

for him, as it did last year, with his showdown with Donald. Lee has

had the equivalent of five bogeys today and only three birdies. He is

coming home better than he went out. Rose is pondering hard and long on

this putt from the back of 11. It is a similar distance from the one

Lawrie. All he has to do is a chip out sideways. He has managed to get

a clean line so he will be able to do that, but he will still have

around 145 for his third shot. on the 11th. Rose lining this up.

He gets to try and strike first for this green. Sometimes they move,

sometimes they don't. After that fair recouped second, he has hit

another birdie -- very good second. This week, Donald has holed the

putts at a decent pace so there is very little charge of them

wandering off the line. A big swing there, more green. Another hole

safely negotiated. Kent everybody just standstill, please, thank you!

That is the second of Richard Sterne. He will be disappointed

with that one from a good angle. That is not an easy one he has left

himself. The faces have got brown and Brown of or redder and redder

as the day has gone on -- Brown and browner. They must have had over

100,000. Well over. They should get over 26,000 today. Longhurst and

Skinner, there was a family shop, and it is their centenary. All

little controlled 8-iron, although probably not as well controlled as

he was hoping. Not much control in that one I am afraid. A big error

in judgement for the length. Justin Rose now. Justin has been playing

well but if he wants to challenge for this title, he somehow has to

find another gear. He needs to convert these chances he's giving

into the sky. Beautiful. A good bounce as well. That will leave him

a fairly short distance to his par five at the second. We are well

into the back nine. Luke Donald looks as though he has a pretty

strong grip on things right now. After nailing these 20 foot at pace,

his third birdie of the day, to Kim three shots clear of the field.

Lawrie is making a strong challenge. Some terrific iron play, the

foundation of this ground. He back that up straight away at the 12th.

5-under for his round and 10-under, second place. But he is in a touch

of trouble at the 13th. This is the current situation. Rose and Lawrie

are both in second on the same drinking. Because the greens are

not quite as fast as they have been in the past, it makes this shot a

lot easier for Lawrie. It is still downhill and fairly speedy but it

is a shot he can get close with, whereas previous years, you would

probably just get it on the front of the green. Look at that. It is

really slow. I thought that was going to be within a couple of feet.

Still work to do there. Sterne has a more difficult shot because of

the right to left slope. He needs to pitch it right on the edge of

the green or the edge of the hat on, giving this all the

information that we pass on to you. I don't know what we would do

Brown's connection with Scotland? His daddy is Scottish. From

put the frighteners on and he has put it into the right hand bunker.

He has 190 to the green and 170 to carry the burn. You can do it but

he is brimming a lot of other stuff into play. It is a bit touch and go

with the lip. Possibly, if he is putting his best way, I would not

be surprised if he which it out. It is on the cusp. He could go either

way. I think that is what he will do. Maybe a little bit more than a

wedge but he is such a beautiful player with a wedge, I can't see

any point in him risking going into the ditch. It looks to be lying

firm and clean. No use sand behind the ball. If you were fooling

around you might risk is 7-iron but it does not need any more than a 9-

iron. Make sure you get a good contact and send it up. Don't be

to go one shot behind. Did not want to kill too much momentum. He is

now four adrift of Donald. Donald so. Rose will be going for it.

Lawrie on the 14th tee. This is the view that the players get on the

14th. Just how tough is it? Let's have a look at where the flag is.

The players have got about one, two, three paces. There is nothing to a

matter at all. There is a change in elevation, the club selection is

very tough. There is one possibility. Behind the flag there

is a bit of a slope, if you go behind it, there is every chance

the ball will go back. If you get it right, the ball will go to the

hole. You do not want to go into that front bunker. A lot of players

drift past the flag. I have had a couple of goes at this. This is

almost unstoppable by the flag. You have to get it right to the top of

the crest of the hill. It has just about got there. Despite that, it

is still going to run by it. It is very difficult to get down in two.

You would need a deadly touch. Indeed. Luke Donald's third shot at

the 12th. He hits them so beautifully. Delight for. Skilful.

-- delightful. You could hear that crisp contact. We have had a number

of e-mails about those new style of shoes. They have little pimples on

them. It is supposed to help their footwork. They are working on their

core strength, they feel that the shoes help their footwork.

Sometimes it feels you are pushing against a spike. Used to need

strong support, but it things have changed. -- butter things have

changed. He is on the lower level. When you look at all of the

equipment these days, waterproofs, gloves, everything has improved, so

much. There are special socks. doesn't look like you need to break

their men. -- break them in. Used to have to, otherwise you would get

terrible blisters. There is not a lot of breeze. That was a six-iron.

Bold. There is your part, Ken. -- putt. It is manageable, if you get

it to the top of the hill. Justin Rose, on the 12th. I think that was

for any golf. He will nudges in for a birdie. -- that was for an eagle.

Lee Westwood, for a par. Not the happiest of days. He got away to a

poor start. Playing alongside Simon Khan, he got a 73. He has done this

time and time again, got out of position, he has done it again.

That is a wonderful equalising club. You were a good putter, it really

helps. My word. They do it without is a long putt, quite slow. Usually

so fast from up there. A lot of the players here this week are

supporting the Children's Trust, they support a number of charities

over the years. They also do that in America, the PGA Tour is hugely

generous. Well done. They are trying to rehabilitate children

with multiple disabilities. It is about 80 miles from here. It is one

of the largest, if not have the largest, in the country. They do a

fantastic job. -- if not it the largest. This looks like it is a

Sterne's putt. It is very interesting, there is a lot of

speed on that green. They will have to concentrate if they want to get

this within three feet. Richard Sterne's is going to come up the

bank, it is going to kick from left to right, once it starts going down,

it will speed up. There looks to be a bit of a hump in the green.

other side. This is bound to turn viciously from left to right. You

have to pick the high point, and get the pace just right. He is

Every shot seems to be more crucial than it has been all week. Here we

whisker too hard. Not bad. A little slower, and it was a beauty. You

have to be brave to bring a toddler to a golf course. They get tired.

He can hold it by the hole. It was thinking about it. I o, a great

you have got to have it. You have got to be able to play, be a good

play with confidence. I have seen plenty of good players with their

confidence. -- no confidence. They should so confident, I could make a

fortune. There was a big cheer when we were watching, this is the

Donald. Got to generate a lot of height a short distance. He does

have a bit of a back stop. Ideally you pounds this on the fringe, has

the ball run into the hole. If there is a bit of pace it might go

back down to the hole for him stop got to decide whether to use the

slope or cut it up and out. Doesn't want to get caught in between. A

little unlucky. I'm not sure what he tried to do. Betwixt and between.

A wonderful bunker player. I would have thought I was only five out of

10 for his standards. -- it was a me. If he pops it in all will be

forgotten and forgiven. Don't think bit of good fortune. He may not

realise it. He might think that is in the bunker. Talk about Luke

Donald's rhythm, this is amazing. Looks to do it apparently with no

last year-and-a-half days he has done umpteen of these, hardly

to be in control. When he has got slightly out of position, his

putting is getting up and down. -- his putting has been a getting him

up and down. Still a chance, there is still time. Justin has to

believe there is still time. I don't think there is too many who

would agree with that. Hitting closer to the right hand side. That

is fine. That ditch really does nip in. The number two in the world

playing with the number 10 in the world. Luke Donald has to finish in

the top eight in the world to go to number one. -- has to finish in the

fortuitous for Richard Sterne, he has come up a couple of feet short

tee shot. The pin position is in the middle of the green. What is

the wind doing? I was going to make a comment, it is a little

inconsistent. Right now, they raised very little wind. -- there

is very little wind. You cannot see the putting surface very well, but

right now they Rosebery little wind. -- there is very little wind.

Open. You really want the ball to land on the right portion of this

green. He has really got to make a enough room. Just over 140 yards.

He has a six-iron. That is the greediest bunker in the course.

That is not a difficult shot, but he is chasing the flag. He wants

birdies. He finished fourth in the Open as an amateur. He has missed

the cut in subsequent ones. He has had quite a career. A very similar

yardage, but a five-iron. He will try and find the right side of the

green. He had at the line. -- he had at the right line. I was

speaking to some caddies, they said it was much softer out there today.

They said it was a very different feel to the course today. Yesterday

the stroke average was 75.7. It was getting very tough. There are some

of the best players in the world out there. Sandy. Ernie, striding

up some very familiar territory. Be 15th hole. Chatting to his long-

time caddie. It is the middle of the green, but it is the middle of

the back here that makes it difficult. -- back to. Christopher

Columbus! This last third of the green slopes unusually from front

to back. Anything that Justin can do here, he's not going to hold

this. He has to consider leaving it five feet past the flag. It is a

much easier putt from this side of the hole. He has enough room to

work with. Back there shortly. Up to the 18th, James Morrison, three

under at the moment. He is having a crack at this par five in two. He's

trying to finish well. I o, he does! Look at this!. A lovely shot

from James Morrison. -- oh, he does. What can a Rose do with this?

Beautifully done. That is the best place to leave yourself. He should

tap that in. Let's not forget, three shots in it, strange things

can happen over the last three holes. He drops a shot on 16. Three

bogeys in a row for the South African. Back into a tie for sixth

place. Alongside Francesco Molinari. His chance has gone. Still on

course for a top three finish. There are many points on that the

Ryder Cup list. -- towards that Ryder Cup list. A misread by Luke

Donald. That is a tester. Just a little bit of movement. Peter

Lawrie has just a splash in here -- he has just splashed in here. That

is a brave shot, just in that little alcove, where the pin is.

That is for par. He is two feet needs this. He's going to - it in

and take some of the breakout. He has done it. That was a brave one.

There were two ways of putting that one, he could have dribbled it, if

he hadn't missed -- if he had missed, he would have had any

easier shot. I think Justin is starting to think about playing for

second. Maybe not quite yet. would be nice if they could come

down to the final hole, but at the moment, Donald is keeping the rest

at bay. Lawrie Mr that birdie putt on the 16th. -- missed. A wonderful

shot into the middle of the 18th green for Ian Poulter. A chance. He

will have that brave 71. A pretty good weekend, 69 yesterday. -- for

71. He is four under, currently tied for 9th. Lawrie, on the 17th.

A good lie in the middle. Not playing it its full length. A

beautiful drive. It's a day hard bounced. -- it took a hard bounced.

It is going to be a round of 71 when he taps that in. That puts him

into a tie for 9th place. The halfway leader he led by so many

and fell so fast yesterday it is is going to look down the 16th and

see Luke Donald's bought looking back at him from the centre of the

fairway. He has done that for most of the day. Maintaining his focus

well. Just have to keep grinding away. He has had a wonderfully

successful season, not miss the cut on either side of the Atlantic,

green to work with but awkward. is Molinari his third shot to the

Marcel Siem and Richard Sterne at the moment. Grade opportunity for

Richard Sterne. Didn't stand third there. He is on the upslope. This

is a good a wood and expected to see it long all right of the flag.

some quite influence on his awful. No idea how high the lip is.

fair we needs to come out, keep from Justin Rose on the 16th. A

wedge in hand as well. It was the fact he saw Donald getting a bit

tired. You mustn't miss it on the not too bad. There is a lot of

grass but these players have been practising out of it all week so

they have got a good idea how the club will go through. A reasonable

amount of green to work with. An upslope as well. You would expect

them to get reasonably close. couple of mentions from the people

who have qualified for the PGA regions. Paul Streeter. David

Higgins, he has finished currently the European Tour in 96. Look at

this. He has done as well as he could do there. Just crept out over
