Championship Highlights Golf: PGA Championship

home of the BMW PGA Championship for fully three decades. Some of the

great names of world golf have pitched up here trying to win the

Premier event on the European Tour, and it all adds up to 30 years of

brilliant memories, specially for these men.

And he is the champion! Yes, he has done it! Wonderful. From Bernhard

Langer. Faldo is the champion. He is a genius. Yes! Well done! What a

wonderful way to finish your round! Very well played, Bernhard Langer.

Yes... I think he is pleased! A second victory in this championship.

Just like that. Well, they don't come much better than that!

from Simon Khan! PGA Championship world number one, congratulations.

Temperamental weather conditions only added to the difficulty of the

notoriously tough West course, and the field, including no fewer than

ten major champions, and all but one of the victorious Ryder Cup team,

needed plenty of patience as well as resolved on the opening days last

Thursday and Friday. This is how they got on.

Few would have thought things would go well for Rory McIlroy, but this

was the highlight of an impressive day. Slow and spin and in, an eagle

on his way to 68, something to smile about. Another Irishman was going

well, Shane Lowry started to turn around a grim season with a decent

finish in Spain, this was one of ten birdies in a 64, and on other days

that might have led, but Thomas Bjorn was having a day when the pins

were easy to find. Eight birdies and an eagle, not a blemish on the

card, a course record 62 for the day. A hard act to follow in the

second round. Ten and would lead at halfway. And he would have company

from Shane Lowry in a rare moment of sunshine, the Irishman closed with

back-to-back birdies, 70, and a share of the lead. McIlroy turn

things around, and he once again found the green in two to make

eagle, eventually around and 71, five under, five behind. The leading

home challenge was from Luke Donald, 67 left him six under and in

the hunt for a third title. Luke Donald on the march but on the way

home after missing the cut... Bidding to cement his place for

Gleneagles, Thomas Bjorn, leader of the championship after two days

alongside Shane Lowry. Luke Donald has hit his stride, former world

number one Rory McIlroy, the man who could leap to the top of the

rankings, Henrik Stenson, on five under.

This is where we join the third-round play, and one name

missing from the top, Thomas Bjorn, who has had a nervous and anxious

start. Luke Donald has made eagle at the fourth, but they are all chasing

27-year-old Irishman Shane Lowry, winner of two European Tour events,

one as an amateur, one as a pro. Seconds out, round three with Ken

Brown, Andrew Cotter and Peter Alliss.

He goes about his business buried quietly went on form. He makes it

look very simple. And then suddenly he has got the winner's cheque.

Putting for birdie, this is to go seven under par.

It was always edging down that side. Oh... We have seen some wonderful

shots and bits and pieces pieces so far today.

He will be around in 65. He has made the top ten in his last two

appearances at the BMW, a delightful round, he has floated through the

field today. Expand in the clubhouse. -- six under. This is a

spooky second shop with the flag where it is, water all the way down

played, the heart of the green. The young Frenchman, a new name. He

goes to seven under par. Eagle at the last, birdied this one. Shane

Lowry leads the way, but look, halfway down, Molinari, 65. He is

with Hazel. A lovely round of 65, why could you

get it so right where others have struggled? I don't know, I started

nicely, I did not bogey the first, which are usually do at Wentworth. I

did not play well in the first round, but I scored well. I played

well yesterday and did not score well. I managed to combine the two

today, got up and down when I missed the Greens, got the chance is that I

had, so really happy with my round. The illuminating part of that round,

the chip in. BT, it is forward, so it is reachable. I hit it a bit

firmer than what I wanted, but it was straight down the line, it went

in, very nice. Two top-ten finishes at this championship, you appear to

be getting the measure of the West Course now. Yeah, I like it, even

after the changes when some of the players were not so happy about it,

I enjoy playing here. Obviously, it is very demanding, and if you do not

play well, it is not much fun to be at there, but I like it, and today

it is another example. You have put yourself in a good position, thank

you. Shane Lowry on the eighth, two

putts would be a very fair result from here.

Oh, no, no... He has left himself something horrible. Marcel Siem,

difficult to pick a club here at the tenth. Playing 175 yards, the par

three. Very well judged. The wind always difficult to suss out.

the eighth. All change, tied for the lead with

Thomas Aiken at nine under par, closely followed by Luke Donald and

Thomas Bjorn at eight under. Ninth hole, Anders Hansen.

A bit of all sorts today, but he's still very much in the picture.

He has pulled it. Oh! He has been red-hot on the Greens this week too,

a beauty at the seventh. Possibly a slight miss it, just a par at the

tenth. A beauty, a very fine strike. This

could really come good from here oh! He has stabbed it down well. Rory!

A little scrappy but he is hanging in, always capable of a sneaky eagle

on those par-fives. A monster putt for Agen, he was within hailing

distance. He is only just within hailing distance now.

Aiken having another shot at it. This is for a four at the 11th. He

has not hit it quite hard enough. The first dropped shot of the day.

This is to tie the lead, a birdie chance at nine.

A lot of his parts have looked at the hole, neat and tidy opening

nine. -- putts. Sullivan at the 11th, birdie putt, taps it in.

Hansen for a par at the tenth. Just a little to the right, a little

bit... Yes! He stays at five under, in touch.

Rory has played a good one, on the green. Luke looks as if he likes it,

and he certainly does! Two beauties. Thomas Bjorn, third shot at the

ninth. He has not hit it hard enough, it

just dives to the left. Nothing much happening for him.

Shane Lowry, this is to go back to level par for the day at the ninth.

He leads by one. Always slightly on the high side. 36, one over, two

birdies and one bogey. Sullivan, a little bit right to left. A turn of

the club, and that is why, up onto the table top, a beautiful shot,

that for eagle. Now Bjorn for his par on the ninth. Yes, has

something. Something to cheer his soul. He is just hanging in there,

Thomas Bjorn, just one behind. It has been a scrap today.

It is a sliding one. A tentative stroke here. That club is moving so

fast. How about that digging in? Not a huge amount of role there. He

doesn't know. He can't see it. Too tightly with Shane Lowry. --

of the players are seeing. Most of them. Andy Sullivan has birdied the

10th and 11th. This for an eagle. That is a great opportunity but it

will be three birdies in a row. tie.

It is good. Tucked in a little alcove today. Rory McIlroy away from

a good angle. It is a poor shot. Just five yards in front of the pin

and five yards behind it. Marcel Siem on the 12th. Can he take

advantage? Certainly can. The tricky bit is hitting it on to this level.

An eagle chance. He has played it magnificently. Very

narrow portion of the green. He has positioned it nicely. Rain is

beginning to fall. Just a bit tight with those trees on the left.

A nervy little putt at the last and that one has a vicious break.

Just enough pace to hold its line. The rain is falling now. 6-under. On

the 12th green, it is chucking it down.

Not good enough. Still a birdie. He will move up to 6-under par. Eight

players now tied on 6-under par. It is beginning to get a bit

crowded. We have a 3-way tie for second. You will see the likes of

Andy Sullivan, three birdies in a row. He is firmly in the mix also.

Thomas Aiken on the 13th. /it well. Nice solid contact. Just miss read.

This is in the extreme for Shane Lowry.

We have seen this one done by Rory McIlroy and now Thomas Bjorn. He

moves alongside Shane Lowry at 9-under par. He has hung in there

today. The players champion in America. Martin Kaymer. Very

popular. Round in 69. Once again Thomas Bjorn and Shane

Lowry are tied at the top. Francesco Molinari has made up some good

ground today. Three wins he has had on Tour. Two

have been here at the PGA Championship. Joint leader. He has

Justin Rose, birdie putt on the 18th. Not to be. Had it going very

nicely on the front nine. Was out in 32. Double bogey on the 11th halted

him in his tracks. A couple of birdies coming back. A lot to do

tomorrow. Jonas Blixt. Slowly, slowly, back

and through. It did better than I thought it would. It looked very

strong when he first hit it and it nearly went in. That is how they

stand coming towards the relatively close end of third round. I wonder

what the spread will be at the end of the day.

Just a birdie. It takes Rory McIlroy out of that big group and 7-under

par. Alone in fourth place. Just two behind now.

Third shot. He has managed to get out. You don't see that very often.

Once he gets going, he can be dangerous. Alongside Rory McIlroy

and Jonas Blixt now. Lowry went too far. Tried to play a miracle shot.

Put it in the front bunker. I don't know what he or she is doing there.

Hansen knocked it down to here. Thomas Bjorn, third shot. It has

done better than I thought it would. That wasn't a very good shot, in all

truth. That was a Miss Q. I can think of many a person that

wouldn't like this one. Just a doddle! Pottered like Ronnie

O'Sullivan. Well done, sir. That was supposed to be difficult. Look at

this. It hopped in at a speed. There she goes. Never looked anywhere

else, did it? Suddenly Bjorn is well out in front.

A birdie on the 11th and 12th. He will lead by two.

This is for a two. A very good judge of pace. Thomas

Aiken at the 16th. 14 screen, McIlroy has had a long

look at this putt. -- 14th green. Up the slope, it is having a

look... A sort of amphitheatre green here,

big crowds. Well done. He started with a double bogey, four birdies,

two under for his round, good comeback. Aiken has already had one

in the bunker, fourth shot. That is more like it.

Not a bad position of the tee, pushed his second. -- off. Birdies

at 11, one at the 12th, this is a chance for a birdie to give himself

a three shot lead. Sliding from left to right. And he has done it.

Brilliantly done for Thomas Bjorn. He opened the week with a 62 course

record, an unbelievable score. This is to go seven under. Come on,

come on..., an! Symbol game. -- simple.

Aiken at the 16th, his trials and tribulations go on. That is half a

dozen from nowhere. Oh, dear! Come tomorrow night, that could be very

expensive. You get a good swat! That is a

crackerjack, just on the top with a bit of grip as well. One of the best

we have seen today. Big putt here for Lowry. Difficult to get it

close. Up and down, slowing up. Very slow from that side. Oh, why did I

do it?! Henrik Stenson. This is for a part at the 14th. --

par. It eventually disappeared, and that will do him a power of good, or

should do, because things were beginning to slip. He stays at eight

under, just a couple behind, three behind. Thomas Bjorn, currently our

leader. This is for a two. Lovely smooth roll, he leads by four,

birdies at 11, 12, 13 and 14. For a par having been in the water. He

nudges it in, good lad! Youthful looking lad and 68, good

school, Eddie. He did that without a chaperone! After that flourish of

birdies will Thomas Bjorn, he leads by four, four birdies in a row. He

is currently two under for the round. Going steadily is Luke

Donald, great finish from Eddie Pepperell there.

Rory McIlroy's second at the 15th, good view of the flag, middle front,

a bit right. He can pitch it right at the flag.

Right online, I fancy, look at those eyes! Safely on.

It sounds pretty hard, packed down with the rain, I guess. Most of the

bunkers could do with a little forking over. Very open clubface,

watch the way he plays this. A little bit of drag, beautifully

done. One of the best short games in the world, second in The Masters.

The greens are slower today, because a little bit softer, footprints at

the end of the day. Not running quite as smoothly as they were

earlier on. Stenson. Henrik Stenson, second

shot. Very up and down round, he has had all sorts of figures and scores,

birdies and putts and missed shots. But very much in the picture, good

job. Jamie Donaldson for a par at the

final hole, well done! The Jolly green giant, there he is. 66, well

done, another one for Gleneagles, the Ryder Cup. Thomas Bjorn, our

leader by four. Beautiful line here, 6-iron, by the

look of it. Bigshot for a six. -- big shot. I know, I did that myself!

I hope he has got a decent lie here. What a result! No, it

couldn't, could it?! It mustn't... Look at that! Paid a fortune for

those choppers. What a man, missed the green by 30 yards and then

played a miracle shot like that. Always a tricky green to read, eight

under. Well done. Stenson, birdie putt.

Seven players now at six under par, half of the field within eight

shots. Thomas Bjorn, big swinging putt down the hill, right-to-left,

speed is very important. Hello! Hello! Well, what a difference... It

must be his twin brother, this is not the same fellow who was walking

around earlier, five birdies in a row. Look at that! A five shot lead

at the moment. 18th, and Chris Doak, this to move

to seven under. He has got a chance... Oh! It was turning in as

minus six for the championship, how'd you view that going into the

final day at Wentworth? Am in -- I in a decent position, I played as

well as I could, but I scored well, which is the main thing. That gave

me a score of 68. These are wonderfully exciting times for you,

in the two years since your breakthrough victory on the European

tour, doing great things in America and on the European tour, possibly

even eyeing a place on the Ryder Cup team. What has changed over the last

couple of years for Jamie Donaldson? Family responsibility, I have got

two kids now, so that is a massive responsibility. I suppose you look

at life differently. Things are more important. But my goal has been

pretty good for a number of years, everything is starting to click

nicely. -- might golf. I have kept working on things, and here I am,

trying to improve, move up the world rankings, the order of merit every

year, and that is what I have been doing, quite happy with the

progress. There is a lot of golf to play. I am trying to play as well as

I can each week to hit other targets and let everything else take care of

I am not sure we have seen transformations in golf as big as

this. This is for another birdie. Pity, pity, pity. Wasn't as

confident. He wanted that one and a four at the last to be home in 29.

He won't be done today unless he gets a three at the last. Superb

drive from Rory McIlroy. Towering shot. Oh, dear, where has

it gone? Lowry, trying to stay short of those bunkers on the left-hand

to the right. Down it goes. It is in the bunker. It is not too bad there.

It was a little bit more classic. Thomas Bjorn laid up after being

some weight back off the tee. -- some way back. That is a very fine

shot. A bit of spin and another birdie chance. He was tied with

Shane Lowry going out in the third round. Luke Donald, what a finish he

has had. You had that eagle on the fifth but you had to stay very

patient and your reward came at 17 and 18. How important were those

birdies? Every time I looked at the board, Thomas had made another

birdie. I didn't want him to get too far ahead of me. It was important to

be in the last group tomorrow. Depending on what big guys do, I

think I will be in the last group with Thomas. You know how to win

this, you have done it twice. How much is this place is associated

with you? 2011 was might best year here for sure. I have so many good

memories and coming back, defending in the next year was pretty special

as well. To win here three times would be very good. I have a tough

task ahead of me. Thomas looks like he is playing good golf. I know you

have been working. There has been some swing changes. When you can go

bogey free on the golf course like this and hit a decent amount of

fairways, golf becomes easier. I probably wasn't that interesting to

watch today but it was a stress-free 68. Well done today, we look forward

Rory McIlroy will be in contention. Rory, you began with a double bogey

but how proud are you off the fight back? I was very happy. It wasn't

the start that I was looking for. I wanted to get off to a fast start. I

fought back well. I played the last 14 holes in 5-under par so that was

a good effort. Not quite as close as I would like to be to the leaders.

What are you most satisfied with in what has been a difficult week for

you? I didn't know what to expect and it is not a course that I have

had success on. I didn't know what to expect. My game has been solid.

Mentally, I feel like I have done pretty well. I haven't let any bad

shots get to me and I stayed patient when I have needed to. You are still

very much in it. Good luck tomorrow. Both Thomas Bjorn and Rory McIlroy

have a fairly wretched record here, but not Luke Donald, who has another

chance tomorrow. You are full of surprises, 62 on Thursday, six

birdies in a row, a record here, how did you turn that around? It is hard

to explain, really, because I wasn't playing very well earlier, and it

was just trying to hang in, but I made a good putt on 11, then I had a

great run. Golf is a strange game sometimes, but you have got to take

the good and the bad, and today was probably one of my better

performances, certainly mentally and staying power and staying determined

on the course, that was the key. You started off with a double bogey at

the first, then you slipped out of the lead. I just wonder how

difficult it is to maintain your focus and your patience when that

happens. Yeah, but it was a strange thing, because I had such a big lead

this morning, so it never felt like a falling out of the tournament,

knowing there was a long way to go, it was just a question of trying to

get the best out of it and just see if you can roll a few putts in. That

probably happened in excess on the back nine, but grams is that strange

sometimes, and it can turn with one swing. -- golf. I felt like it was

coming together on the back nine, hitting great positions on the

course, which you have to do around here, and then all of a sudden it

seemed easy again from being difficult on the front nine. How

comfortable is your lead? It is a dangerous lead, certainly with those

names on the leaderboard, you cannot take anything for granted in this

game. Just try and do more of the same, stay very determined, stay

with my grams and be determined with that. Blustery conditions for the

final round, how do you assess Thomas Bjorn's task on this final

day? final round, how do you assess

Thomas Bjorn's task on Well, he has got a nice lead. He has got a bit of

leeway to make a mistake. The key to his success is probably the first

three holes. If he can make par there, he will be off and running.

With the wind blustery, it will not be an easy day, it will be tricky.

He has got to have is A game. A 62 in difficult conditions on Thursday?

If not Thomas Bjorn, who, and from how far back? If he shoots one

under, probably three or four players can challenge him. You would

have to look at Rory, he is capable of 64, although it is tricky today.

66 would be a great round. Rory would be the first challenger,

closely followed by Luke Donald, who has an incredible record here, 17 or

18 rounds, under 70 recently. He would be your next choice, but they

need to do something special, they have to have a flawless round. It is

windy, it is testing, we cannot wait to see who comes out on top in this

BMW PGA Championship. Let's show you the early movers. Francesco

Molinari's third round was the best of the Saturday efforts, and he

picked up where he left off, slotting this birdie at the opening

hole to move to seven under. Pablo slotting this birdie at the opening

Larrazabal al has already won this season in Abu Dhabi, he was in hot

pursuit from eight behind. He birdied the first, and this effort

at the short second set up go nine under, moving beautifully.

Meanwhile, his playing partner, Rory McIlroy, waited to launches first

attack. This was for eagle, not playing ball. And then it did! Ten

and a par, into outright second place. -- ten under par. Shane Lowry

said he felt curiously flat, but the 27-year-old was firing well by the

time he reached the fourth. That was for eagle, 11 under par, four shots

behind the big Dane. This is the look of things.

No sign of a wobble from the leader, looking very composed and in control

of his game so far. Let's enjoy the rest of the final day in the company

of Andrew Cotter, Ken Brown and Peter Alliss.

We have only seen two eagles on the Seoul all day. -- this hole. A

pretty solid effort, he will take the birdie. Rory McIlroy is playing

alongside Larrazabal, who has just pitched in for his birdie.

That is a bold one from McIlroy, dumbing down the slope. Not a nice

putt he has left himself for his par.

Now, Lowry, to get to 12 under. Shane Lowry now four behind Thomas

Bjorn. This is not the length of putt you

want for par on a relatively short four. It has cost him a shot. After

an eagle, that is not good news. That is how shot drift away, you

will never get that one back - it is gone!

He is lying OK, not too difficult of a shot down the slope to the pin.

He needs to catch the slope and get on down there.

Thomas Bjorn, first bogey of his final round. He moves back to 15

under par. And as it stands, as he taps it in, he is now three shots

clear of Shane Lowry. We started five head, down to three.

That holds his momentum, first dropped shot of the day, three

birdies in his opening six holes. -- halts. Back to nine under, six

behind Thomas Bjorn. Not that long ago, Francesco

Molinari had pretty much this putt and just missed it left. McIlroy for

birdie. Yes! He has it, McIlroy, ten under again, back within five. Bogey

at the sixth, birdie at the seventh, on the march.

Bjorn out of the bunker... Oh, no! I am not sure whether the ball came

back and hit him. If it did, it is a penalty. Third shot, I'm not sure

whether there was a penalty, he has just dumped it out. He is staring a

six in the face now. The final group calamities, penalty drop for

Donald, this is his third shot. There in three.

Fourth shot, then, for Thomas Bjorn, the leader for the moment. What has

he done with this?! Oh, that is wild from that distance! Up and down for

a double bogey. Luke Donald, his fourth shot to the

Bjorn, that should save par. Donald, then, difficult putt, down the

slope. What a putt from Luke Donald! They and he gasped. What an effort

from Luke Donald. Shane Lowry, one shot clear of

McIlroy. He has got to get down in two. Well,

he played a fierce one, but he is nearly five feet by.

Over to McIlroy for his par on the 16th. Right in the middle! So Rory

McIlroy stays 12 under, Lowry will slip back. They will be tied, 12

under par. Not too bad here or Luke Donald, it is sitting nicely, a

fairly flat bit of ground and plenty of green to play with.

And upslope to land it on. He would have expected nothing less than

that. He should stay 11 under. Just tucked in one behind. McIlroy aiming

at that tree in the distance. 40 odd yards to go. It is a big iron. He

has got to carry it all the way. Well, it could have been in a worse

spot. Now, can Thomas Bjorn move back into a tie for the lead?

Oh! He gave that a go, whistling on by. Aggressive putt from Bjorn.

No. No, at this moment he is level with McIlroy Mobot he has got little

tester. Very important little chip here. He

has got to get over that bank. He has got a fair bit of room. Down in

two would be brilliant. It looks fairly straightforward,

this putt, as if anything is at this stage. Thomas Bjorn, shot gone. He

gave that birdie putt a right old go, handy... And he has paid the

price. With three holes to go, two behind McIlroy and Lowry.

So two friends, McIlroy and Lowry, tied at the top. Thomas Bjorn is now

two adrift. Oh, it fell in beautifully. That is

very important. That could be the winning putt. One whole left. He is

the outright lead at the moment. All to play for. Thomas Bjorn, second

shot to the 16th. If ever he needed a good finish, he needs it now. That

is not a bad start. Luke Donald, third shot at the 16th.

Again, a magical short game of his. It is almost unfair, he plays them

Lyra -- Shane Lowry. It is time to reward our champion

here at Wentworth. Ian, it is been a challenging week but what do you

reckon to your champion's efforts? Rory, great that you are our

champion. Bow to the presentation of the trophy. Rory, this week of all

weeks, for it to end so happily, how can you sum up your emotions? It has

been a roller-coaster. On the golf course, it was nice, it was a

release for me and I could go about my business and play the way that I

wanted to. I knew my game was good coming it is -- coming in here

coming off the back of America. Although I have come to a golf

course that I haven't had much success, I played solid and

everything came together. I held the putts at the right time. The other

guys made some mistakes coming in. Everything felt my way and I am

delighted to be standing here as a champion. You threatened a win so

often this year. At the start of the day, seven shots behind Thomas

Bjorn. It looked unlikely, to say the least. I wasn't expecting... I

thought the way Thomas was playing, I thought it would be hard to get

near him and I thought he wouldn't surrendered the lead. He made a

mistake and it let a lot of guys back into it and I was able to take

advantage of it more than anybody else. I played the back nine all

week and I played well with them today. It was nice to see that

finish. It has been a long time since victory on the European Tour

and I wonder what this win represents to you in career terms.

It is definitely up there with the first time I have one. -- 1-macro. I

couldn't as car for a better one to win on the European Tour. -- have

asked for a better one. It is great that I was able to do it this week.

It has been a pleasure watching you this week. Rory and everyone else

will be looking forward to a real summer of sport and you will watch
