Final Round Golf: PGA Championship

Yes, it was quite a Saturday. And so much to look forward to on the

closing day. After his performance yesterday, does anybody have any

reason to doubt Thomas? The Dane has led since his opening-day 62. And

full of surprises again yesterday. Suddenly, Thomas Bjorn is out in

front. Brilliantly done by Thomas Bjorn.

He now leads by four. What a difference. This must be his

twin brother! It is not the same guy who was walking around three hours

ago. Six birdies in a row!

Yes he can! Well done. Overnight, Thomas Bjorn said it was

a dangerous lead, with those on his tail. But the man who could cement

his place in the Ryder Cup team knows that the championship is

effectively his to lose. These blustery conditions and to the

intrigue. Assess his task on the final day.

He has a nice lead of five shots but that can add to the pressure. It

will give him some leeway for the odd mistake. The key to success will

be the first three holes. He is a proven winner and will be tough to

catch. But it will not be an easy day.

He has shown the field what is possible. A 62 and difficult

conditions on the first day. But if not him, who, and from how far back?

There are three or four players who could reach if they play well. Rory

is capable. Make the order legal. -- odd eagle. Then followed by a Luke

Donald who has an incredible average share. Under 70. But they will need

something special, flawless putting, and making the most of the par

fives. Here are the various movers.

Francesco Molinari picked up where he left forth to move to seven

under. Pablo Rafa Lorrabal set himself up at nine under with this

shot. His playing partner, Rory McIlroy, waited to launch an attack.

This eagle attempt just did not play ball. And then it did! That moved

him into outright second place. Shane Lowry said he felt curiously

flat yesterday but he was playing well by the time he reached the

fourth. Only for shots behind the leader. Here is the look of things.

Francesco Molinari making further progress. But Thomas Bjorn, no sign

of a wobble. Looking very composed. Let's enjoy the final day in the

company of our commentary team. Second shot for Thomas Bjorn. Made a

good solid start. Beautifully constructed. It will be interesting

to watch his progress today. That is a beautiful shot. Quite magical.

Will it continue? Luke Donald, second shot to the fourth. Dropped a

stroke at the first. Safely on. Getting better.

Shane Lowry, to the fifth. All the way in the back right corner.

Beautiful shot. He is only four adrift.

not left himself a nice putt for par.

Lowry, to reach 12 under. All the way! Four behind Thomas Bjorn.

This is not the length you want for a par attempt and a relatively short

par four. It has cost him. That is how shots adrift away, you never get

them back. That is gone. His line is OK. Not too difficult to

hit a shot down the slope to the pin. Needs to catch the slope and

get down. Tried. But in danger of dropping a first shot of the day.

McIlroy, at the seventh. Second shot.

Very good. Just a hint to the right. Not that much. Thomas Bjorn, a first

bogey of the final round. He is now three clear of Shane Lowry. Started

five ahead, down to three. That halts some momentum. That one

will go. Back to nine under. Six behind Thomas Bjorn.

Not that long ago Francesco Molinari had this putt and just missed to the

left. Rory McIlroy, for a birdie, yes, he has it! Back within five. On

the march. Thomas Bjorn, out of the bunker, oh, no! I am not sure, did

the Balkan back and hit him? -- ball come back. That would be a penalty.

He has just thumped it out and is staring a six in the face.

A fourth shot for Thomas Bjorn, the leader, for the moment. What has he

done with this? That is wild! Up and down for a double bogey. Luke

Donald, a fourth shot to the sixth. Hitting it had, my word. Thomas

Bjorn and Luke Donald. Need to dig it up and move on. Having horrors.

Going well, Stephen Gallacher on the 14th. Perhaps need to toughen up to

play in the Ryder Cup, but five birdies so far today. He is eight

under par. Luke Donald, one of the best at this

kind of shot, but it is his fifth. So this rather innocuous par four is

giving the leaders much aggravation. Umpteen from Thomas Bjorn. This

could be the tournament, a big change here, in the space of ten

minutes. Stephen Gallacher, could go to nine under. A beautiful tee shot

up there and the 14th. For in a row. -- four.

Suddenly, things not looking bad for Rory McIlroy. A three would put him

in good nick at par-4 eighth. A good birdie opportunity. All about damage

limitation this. For a double bogey. Horrible. A 74 Luke Donald. -- a

seven for. Can Thomas Bjorn at least restrict

it to basics? Well, from some of the finest golfers in the world, that is

as big a mess as you will see with a fairly harmless par. His five shot

lead is gone. McIlroy will not know yet how close he is, but this to get

within one. A good go, but he stays at ten under.

He very rarely did well on this course and now he is another great

chance of winning this Championship. Ten under par, just two behind. It

is not only Rory McIlroy that is in contention, far more players have

been brought back into things. Shane Lowry and Thomas Bjorn are tied

again. Shane Lowry's third shot, seventh hole. He has a nice touch

around the greens. He needed to hole that.

Difficult to pick a winner at this stage.

Shane Lowry for a battling the seven, just, but it is enough to

stay in their tie at the top. Thomas Bjorn. -- the tide.

Good position off the tee. A chance to bounce back.

Shane Lowry is standing on the border between Syria and Berkshire,

he looks OK. -- Surrey. That is alone part-macro. -- putt. -- a

long. It is a birdie chance. 7-3, back in the game.

That is the way a professional does it. Sort of. Thomas Bjorn here at

the seventh. Luke Donald has just holed one. Only a par. He is going

to settle. He did the same it yesterday. Fairways and greens. --

he did the same yesterday. The situation, two players, Shane Lowry

and Thomas Bjorn are 12 under. One burst of magic could change

everything. The scoring is not particularly low today because of

this relatively strong wind. Shane Lowry, birdie putt on the eighth. A

He is tied with Rory McIlroy. Rory McIlroy for his par on the

ninth. Did not look convincing at all. What a waste! Bogey on the

ninth, out in 34, it slips back to nine under par. Pablo Larrazabal

goes in the other direction, that is his playing partner. Others come

into the mix, Simon Dan -- Simon Dyson, a chance to get to eight

under. That is his third birdie in a row. Four behind. Who can take this?

Very well judged long putt from Luke Donald. Par four. Rory McIlroy, down

there as well. The ball looks to be lying OK. It is rolling well, very

well indeed! Rory McIlroy in for a two! Birdie at the 10th, back to ten

under par, he is a shill man. -- shill man. -- showman. That one

wayward shot at the sixth hole started a pyramid of bad shots.

Pablo Larrazabal for his par. So on the ninth in this group, we had a

two shot to Pablo Larrazabal and a swing back to Rory McIlroy. Birdie

for Pablo Larrazabal. He is back to nine under par. Shane Lowry. Getting

tight at the top. Nicely played. Stevie! 17th. Oh no! Not a double.

The club is broken, he has hurt his hand. Little and lucky. -- unlucky.

He has trapped his right thumb. That is so painful. The only upside of

that, sometimes when you do that, the ball goes to the left, it could

have been worse. Shane Lowry. He is now one behind,

18 shot on the 10th. That is a good one. -- a tee shot.

Just off the fairway, Rory McIlroy. An enormous drive. Coming in from

right to left and just coming out of the rough on the backspin, another

chance for Rory Ron McIlroy. -- Rory McIlroy. Thomas Bjorn. Coming up

short. He has got a dairy decent short game. Keep coming. -- a very

decent. It is a little bit away. Stephen Gallacher drove under a tree

and then hacked out and broke his club. This is his third to the 17th.

He has given himself a chance. The chance for Shane Lowry to get

back into a tie for the lead. A feathery touch down the slope.

Beautifully judged. Executed to perfection, a bogey on the ninth, a

birdie on the 10th, back into a tie with Thomas Bjorn. Thomas Bjorn with

this parts-macro. -- putt. Shane Lowry is now the outright lead a

game. -- leader again. Pablo Larrazabal to save par on the

11th. He was way left off Brett Rumford. He hit a spectator and come

back onto the fairway. -- off the key macro. -- tee. Stephen

Gallacher. To get to ten under within two. A nice role. It is a

coin to come? -- is it going to come? Just a par at the 17th.

Very handy looking card. Rory McIlroy for his three or his birdie.

Got to take your chances. I do not know if he tried to shove it or he

must read it. It did not do what he thought it would. -- miss read. In

the space of half around, it is all turned around. Shane Lowry, the 27

you rolled has a one-shot lead and Thomas Bjorn, on Saturday, showed us

what you can do -- 27-year-old. Holger Pace Abbott! -- hold your

pace up! The plot thickens. Shane Lowry, high

shot trying to get it to come down softly. It spends. Well done! --

spins. Nicely done. Marcel Siem on the 17th. It is not

going to be his Championship. Bogey on the 17th. Back to seven under.

Shane Lowry to double his lead, down the hill from the right. He has done

it. 2-3 start to the backline and he by two. I am glad he has brought the

putter back. This is nice for Rory McEnroe. -- Rory McIlroy. Nice bit

of rhythm. Nearly. Have that for a birdie. Simon Dyson, eight under. He

has got a chance. Rory McIlroy has played 13 par

fives. This would be 14 out of 14 if he nudges this thing. And he does. A

timely birdie. -- this in. There is an eagle at the fourth, a birdie at

the 12th today. Very short putter. It goes quite a long way down the

shaft. Simon Dyson, he has done it. And lovely up and down. He moves to

nine under -- a lovely up and down. No birdie on the final hole for

Stephen Gallacher. A fine back nine it was. He moves into a tie for

fourth place. Not a bad lie there. There is a bit more room than you

would think. Too bold. What did that tell us about your mental toughness?

I was trying to get on with my game and shoot as low as I could. In

terms of our wonderful run, that was a highlight. I had some great shots.

Out here, birdies are hard to come by. You have to capitalise when you

can. I was a bit disappointed, but on the whole I am delighted with my

work. I knew that I had to sacrifice a club. I used one I do not use very

much. Had I gone any further I would have smacked my thumb a beauty. I

just delighted to be in the top ten. We look forward to seeing you keep

your Ryder Cup run going. Rory McIlroy at 13. Second shot.

Huge drive. Leads fight to Lowry. Now he leads

by three. Rory McIlroy, for a berth day. --

birdie. That was a big moment. If he can finish the rest of the holes

with fours he could set a target nobody can catch.

Get in. Wonderful green. An amphitheatre around it. Tremendous

atmosphere. Championship leader. Is he tight up the left? He is. That is

no place to be. A dropped shot. Third short for Thomas Bjorn. It

looks good. Neatly done. Should be OK.

Dyson. This will take him round in 66. Look at that. That looks like a

drop out. But you are still faced with a difficult one when you drop

it out again. You see how important straight driving is at the crucial

moment? The wrong time to go left. Two clubs length still doesn't do

him a lot of good. Luke Donald, birdie. Ten under. Thomas Bjorn, for

his birdie. The run for home begins. This is intriguing. Shane Lowry in

the trees. It looks like he will drop one or two. Very tight at the

top. It looks to be between the top four. Lowry has had a drop. He is a

couple ahead, but I don't for long. Be careful of that little ditch. He

is all right. Good life. Need to float this, because there is a bit

of a slope above the flag. It is fraught with danger. Man, oh man.

Absolutely sensational. Early, brilliant, brilliant. Shot of the

day. Shane Lowry, fourth shot, 13. He

might escape with just one drop. This is how they stand with just a

handful of Paul's left to play. -- holes. It is so tight. Shane Lowry,

this for a one over par five. No. Two shots gone. Always a dangerous

tee shot this, the 15th. You can go out of bounds both left and right.

Just need to squirt it forward. Lovely. Super shot.

Shane Lowry, for a six. At the 13th. Costly. A 3-way tie at the top. The

famous Wentworth run in facing them. That is how it looks. Tied at the

top. Luke Donald not far behind. Par fives to come. 14th. Deep breaths

for Shane Lowry. Need to gather himself. Don't like the sound of

that. But now, it is a beautiful shot. Down on the 15th. Rory

McIlroy, second shot coming up. Three or four Mac good shots from

somebody will do it. Down in two will be good. It had just caught a

little puff of Wentworth wind. Henrik Stenson. A favourite for many

at the beginning of the week. This for an eagle. Suddenly going to

eight under. One more at the next hole and he is up with the big boys.

Big moment for Rory McIlroy. A big, swinging putt. Down in two would be

very good after a slightly misjudged second shot. It is turning... That

is pretty good. Look at the big swing at the end. That is OK.

A colourful back nine for Shane Lowry. This, the 14th, and straight

back into the lead on his own. Three of the attentions of Rory McIlroy,

Thomas Bjorn, he is now one ahead. A little chip for Donald. Right to

left, down the hill. Looks good. It looked good from ten feet out! 11

under. Two from the lead. What a charge the remaining holes will be.

Not an easy one for Thomas Bjorn. Coming off the fringe. Is it too

much? Just. Rory, this is a little bit left to

right and pace will be important. But that was right in the middle.

Confident putt. The tee shot from Bjorn.

Oh, Lord. A club short. Rory McIlroy, second shot to 16. Yes. Or

no! Steady, steady... It was quite good ones, but now look at it go. --

once. Got within 15 feet, now he is facing a tricky up and down.

That is not lying too Thomas Bjorn in the bunker.

Comeback, comeback... Well thought out. It should save par. Luke

Donald. A difficult attempt down the slope on 14. What a putt! My word!

Shane Lowry, my word, that has gone. What an extraordinary final round

this is. He has got to get down in two. He

played a fierce one and gripped it, but it has gone five feet by. Right

to left. Pace, so important. Just did not have enough. But a good try.

Shot dropped. Over to McIlroy. Trying to make par and 16. Right in

the middle! He stays at 12 under. Shane Lowry will slip back. Both at

12 under par. Not Shane Lowry will slip back. Both at

Donald. Sitting nicely. Plenty of green to play with.

He would have expected nothing less than that. Just tucked in, one

behind. McIlroy, aiming at that round topped tree in the distance.

241 yards. It is a big iron, got to carry it all the way. Left, left,

left... Lucky boy! It could have been worse. Can Thomas Bjorn get

himself back into a tie for the lead? He gave that a go. Whistling

on by. Aggressive, from Bjorn. Lowry, at 16. Birthday, for the

lead. -- birdie. He has got to face that tee shot at 17.

Very important little chip. He needs to get over that rank. -- bank. Down

in two would be brilliant. Looks good... My golly, that speeded up.

It is fairly straightforward, this, as if anything is at this stage. But

shot gone. Gave the birdie par a right old go and has paid the price.

-- birdie putt. There we are. Friends, tied at the

top. And Thomas Bjorn now two adrift. This from McIlroy just a

little bit from the left. But it fell in beautifully. Very important.

That could be the winning putt. He is outright leader. Thomas Bjorn,

second shot to the 16th. That is not a bad start. Luke

Donald. It third shot at the 16th. And again, that magical short game

of his. It is almost unfair, he plays it so well. Have another look

at this. Scruffy Taoiseach, played out to hear, nips it up, pictures

and on, never looked anywhere else -- tee shot. Can Thomas Bjorn read

his putt? He can! 11 under par. Still hanging in there, two behind.

Well, and nice line, the grass riding with them. -- a nice line. He

is third to the part-macro five. A little high choppy one -- par.

Massed crowds around this 18th. Rory McIlroy has lined up his shot. Is it

five iron? Give it a good whack. Watch the reaction from the player.

It looks OK, perhaps a bit to the right. Caught the bunker on the

right. He is pretty good alt of the bunkers, but not the place to go. --

out. Shane Lowry. Well, he has not got the greatest light. He is taking

a gamble. Over the crest of the hill. That is nice, very nice. It is

a thing of beauty. Rory McIlroy out of the sand, along bunker shots. --

a long bunker shot. Coming down beautifully.

Downhill, a bit to the left. It was a tricky one to read. It was a

difficult one on the upslope, playing towards water. Quality.

Don't count out Thomas Bjorn yet, he is 11 under. Eagles are available,

birdies. Second to 17. Runaway ball. He did not quite get

the flight he was after. A very good shot to get it through. That is for

an eagle. Over ?200,000 is the difference

between first and second prize. Think about that on a Sunday

morning. For a birdie and he has rolled it in. Two shot lead at the

moment. What a comeback, what a day. 66, not over of course, we

still have the last stretch coming up behind. Fabulous work from Rory

McIlroy. Magnificent golf. So important now for Luke Donald, up

and down for a birdie. Look at it go! It just runs away. He will have

to hold a ten footer. 258 yards, but two behind. A bold shot. This is a

bold, perhaps reckless one. Seconds will tell.

I think, reckless. Now the magic with the wand. This is to get within

one of Rory McIlroy. He with the wand. This is to get within

slow, he knew it was up the hill. Rory McIlroy breathes a sigh of

relief. Luke Donald needs an eagle, or something magical. Rory McIlroy

in ground position in a course which he is not supposed to like. He is

heading for the title -- ground. Thomas Bjorn, still got a chance to

take the title. This needs to go in. Is there going to be a bit of magic?

No. Landed at way short, hit it heavily. -- landed it way short.

Looks a good speed. How about that for line? What a stupid game it is!

Wonderful. 68. Moving from miracle to Merkel. --

miracle. Is there any more magic left? Luke Donald. For a

play-off... F... -- if. This is going to be the last throw

of the dice. Thomas Bjorn has to hole this to get into a play-off. If

he misses, Rory McIlroy is the winner. I do not think that looks

too attractive. So there you have it, Rory McIlroy comes through after

a pressurised week. He is the BMW PGA and the. He played some

brilliant stuff. -- PGA champions. This is for par. Nice finish. Good

to see him finish with a par. Champion here, but not this year. --

twice a champion. Thomas Bjorn to hopefully finish

here, this for a par. In that she goes for Thomas Bjorn.

He started with a five shot lead -- in it goes. A good week for Thomas

Bjorn. So there we are, in the biggest

tournament on the European Tour. The biggest star sits on top, one shot

clear in the end. Rory McIlroy finishes ahead of Shane Lowry. The

winner, Rory McIlroy. And it is time to reward our champion. It has been

a challenging week. What a day! It could have gone either way, but it

is great to have Rory McIlroy as our champion. A fantastic tournament.

Let us present him with his trophy. Thank you. Rory, for it to end so

happily, how can you sum up your emotions? It has been a

roller-coaster. On the golf course, it was nice, it was a release for me

and I could go about my business and play the way I wanted to and I knew

that my game was good coming in here. Even though I was coming to a

golf course I had not had much success on, I played solidly and

everything came together. I app and downed it when I needed to, putts at

the right time. It seems like everything fell my way. I am

delighted to be champion. You had threatened to win for so often, but

at the start of the day, seven shots behind Thomas Bjorn, it looked

unlikely. It really did. I was not expecting... I thought the way he

was playing, it would be really hard for us to get near him. I thought he

would not surrendered the lead. He made a mistake on the six hole and

that that a lot of guys back in. I was able to take advantage more than

anyone else. I played the back nine well all week and I did so today. I

finished off well. With the exception of the Australian Open, it

has been a long time since victory on the European Tour and I wonder

what this represents for you? It is definitely up there. It is the first

time I have won on the European Tour since November, 2012, it has been a

year and a half. I could not ask for a better one to win than the

flagship event here. I never thought I would get my name on this trophy.

It is great that I was able to do it this week. Congratulations. Rory

McIlroy and everyone else will be looking forward to a summer of

sport, much of it here. We are looking forward to the Open

Championship at Royal Liverpool. To win the Open. Alan Farmer in the

middle. The old Ernie. The luck of the Irish. The champion for 1986. He

has got it! Those cold black eyes. Thomson puts the finishing touch to

the play-offs. Would you believe it? He has done it. In fact, it is a

double bill of major golf with the women's Championship on the week

before. Stacy Lewis defending the title she won at St Andrews last

year. For now, it is all about Rory McIlroy at Wentworth, he proved that

for every cloud, there can be a silver lining. Goodbye.
