Third Round Highlights Golf: PGA Championship

Good evening. These are exciting times for British golf and the

English golf in particular. It is only six weeks since Sheffield's

Danny Willett was living on the green jacket at Augusta as Europe's

first win of the Masters tournament for nearly 17 years and only the

second Englishman ever, following -- following Sir Nick Faldo. There was

great anticipation and excitement following that of the new major

appearance on the home greens at the prestigious Wentworth Club. This

place is, once again, for the 36th year, staging the European Tour

prize BMW PGA Championship. Always a highlight of the week is

the Wednesday pro-am. Some laughs and we got to enjoy their fellow

company from stars of cricket and sprinkling of stardust from the

likes of a member of One Direction. And it was the Irishman's group. And

it was Colsaerts who took the programme honours this time. I'm

sure Nile Wilson penning a best ever song again after that.

The serious stuff got underway on Thursday morning for the Dubai

rankings. The first day was a fine day and the

chance for the players to attack the West Coast. It is best to have a bit

of power for this and Australian Scott Hend has plenty. He set the

pace. He led for a while on his own but was eventually joined by a major

winner, YE Yang. Here you started with a bogey at eight birdies

followed. -- he started. A total of nine further Joost Luiten to make it

at the top. This man opened with a 4-under 68. The name making most

headlines was that of Danny Willett, the new master opening with a bogey

free, 66, to sit behind the trio of first-round leaders. Day two brought

an early start for Willett and what a start for the early-morning crowd.

He would falter coming back, taking ten shots more to reach the

clubhouse but a 68 left him 10-under, now leading on his own,

and coping with his new-found home. -- found fame. A use to be to do my

own thing but now people are saying, tell me what you're doing, which is

fine, is part and parcel, it's what I should expect, but it is new is a

concept. And he should soon have new company at the top of the

leaderboard. A closing eagle took his fellow player to 10-under. And a

steady 69 left Yang on the same mark. The Scott Jamieson, he was

inch perfect on the ten. Having missed his last four cuts, you would

make the weekend here and can drive home on Sunday night in his

brand-new prize. Well, despite those hiccups, the

Masters champion Danny Willett still at the head of the field.

He has some good company. YE Yang playing only his fifth event of the

year. But seven men within five shots off the lead. Among them two

of the hottest players of the year. Also within striking distance the

likes of two-time champion Luke Donald and fellow former world

number one Lee Westwood. Matthew Fitzpatrick and Graeme McDowell

eight behind, wealth offending champion from career is on level

par. Last night Scotland's Paul Lawrie and Russell knocks were left

out. Much of the intrigue centres on

whether Danny Willett can convert his co-lead into a third victory of

the year. How well is he handling his new status as a major winner? So

well. It must be so difficult because suddenly from nowhere

everybody wants a piece of you, you have to be out, have to do this, do

that. He has a new son as well. But he is handling it fantastically well

and wherever you come and play, when you are the centre of attention, it

must be so difficult. And it takes Major winners to find their feet --

a bit of time to find their feet, and, as you say, it is the grist

sharper scrutiny, the expectation and the fact he is the highest

ranked player in his field. This is a fantastic trophy to have on your

cabinet. He would like to win this. He was writing there last week in

Ireland and he is writing here this week. His play on 29 was fantastic.

A fantastic effort. So he is right there, 10-under par, so he has to

have two good rounds. Well, what would this day bring? Let's bring

you up to speed. Two-time champion Martin Kaymer was

up to speed and he's found some form recently. He began the day 4-under

par after being this last week in Ireland. Close enough for a first

birdie of the day with the German on the move five behind.

He hasn't won a regular event in five years but pushed on. An equal

chance gratefully taken and suddenly the Ryder Cup hero only three away

from the top on 7-under par. He is very much in the picture. And this

is modern's 10th appearance here at one with in the Championship. --

Martin's 10th appearance. So only two off the pace now, which is being

maintained by playing partners Danny Willett and Scott Hend. Both at

10-under. YE Yang is a shot behind. Let's joined the commentary team.

Thank you, his name. And at last Willett is ready to play. A simple

looking shot. Short iron, could be well down the shop. Pulls his watch

hand into that left-hand. Doesn't tuck his arms in very quickly. It

seems to go to the left. That's on the green. A good shot. That nice

for putt at the second seems to have settled Yang. This is his second for

the third. This could be very close. This could dot mac oh, unlucky. A

slightly Augustan type shop there. -- shot. This is not easy, playing

maybe a 4-iron. I don't know. Will it get up? That's good. Delightful.

Lovely birdsong. I suppose they are watching as anxiously as we are!

Second up to the third. Nature's chorus watching in this green. Has

been here 19 times. Look at those two cracking shots. One went one

way, one went the other. Willett for his two at the second.

Tricky to read, this one. Tracking a good turn just as he gets to the

hole, straightens up. Caught so many people out today.

This putt to go 6-under. And he's done it. He really is becoming a

formidable player. Used to be a bit nervy but seems to be better.

Now the Tour one from Bristol. -- tall. Chris Wood. What a beauty.

Flag on the lower level, as yesterday. Kaymer at the seventh.

This is a critical one. A marvellous save in front of the Green and he's

done it with a super up-and-down from an awkward spot. Keep the

momentum of the round going. Just two behind. The birdie at the third

after that excellent second. Just on the top side. This our side.

Right-hand side. Like that. Very smoothly done. Looks so easy,

doesn't it? Yang's birdie putt. Now, he came

back off the slope... Ooh! He looks a bit edgy on those. Little body

movement. A bit of cha-cha-cha. But in it went. Willett's third shot.

Found the deep, deep bunker on the right. Could only get it out some

yards. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

I just think it was like on the soft.

Read it perfectly. Well done! Looked like it was running out of puff.

Just enough pace and that takes into 7-under. -- takes him to.

Chris Wood after a lovely tee shot at the 14th for a par-3. Bang! Well

done. Nicely done, Chris. Won a lovely BMW last year. Moves to

5-under. This really is a bunker. This isn't

one of those flat, pussycat things. This is one of those big ones! Well

played. Easy when you know how. Well, after that splendid third

shot, Willett has this to remain up at the head of affairs.

Yeah. Well done. Turns to the caddy, a little chatter... May be short of

a word or ten! Van Zyl. Beautifully done. Both

players dealing with the sand very well. Four tied now for the lead on

par. He joins Yang and Willett. Campillo is third. He's getting

there slowly. Just has to drop one stroke. So, there we are. Four out

in front 10-under par. Kaymer in hot pursuit as well. A big-name making

his move today. That's a good tee shot from Julien

Quesne on that hole. Going for it. And getting it. So, a chance to

finish birdie, birdie, eagle. Well, van Zyl stabbing it in there

and there it goes. A sorry effort. 18th and it's going to be a fiery

finish for Julien Quesne. This, an eagle for the last. Scheduling up.

-- rolling up. Now, van Zyl has just joined the leaders on 10-under and

needs to -- this is to stay there. So, back to 9-under for the South

African. A bogey on the second, a couple of birdies on three and four

and then this bogey on the fifth. He goes one shot behind now. Now, Yang

deserved better from his little pitch. Just didn't go up the pitch

for enough. Does move a lot, doesn't he? That ball was well wide.

The last hole. Birdies at the last three. Moves him to 6-under.

Currently tied for sixth position. I said they make a few quid on a

Sunday! Round in 67. Kaymer has been looking fairly hot. Looking to close

this out with another birdie to get within one of the leaders. He

thought he had that. We did as well. It'll be a par and an outward nine

of 31. Putting himself right in contention today. Willett and Hend

tied in the lead. Chris Wood with a good chance on the 17th. He's in

that group at six and under. Yang in the middle of the bunker, so should

be able to get it out. And he does. Needed to be quick. That's a

magnificent effort, a magnificent shot. Running out. Well, you won't

see many better than that today. That was high-quality. We have the

details. A 14 inch drop, this putt. Doesn't sound much but it is quite

quick for Danny. Just caressed it. A double break and

in it goes! A beautiful putt and wonderfully read by Danny Willett.

Came back a bit and he judged it superbly and Danny Willett with his

first birdie of the day. He leads on his own. A bit of movement in this

one. You can see where Peter Hanson is aiming. That pinned so close to

the water today. Wonderful. Wonderful putt by the Swede. Second

birdie of the day for him. He's up to 7-under, no drop shots. But

taking that flag on the eighth. After a brilliant shot out of the

fairway bunker to get within one... Very slow up the hill.

Forward momentum for the Masters champion Danny Willett. On Friday he

led the Championship by five shots and he's been pegged back but now he

has his nose in front by a single shot once again.

If he's not too far away he should... He has clipped the top of

it. A little greedy. Must have been right up against it with his second

on the 11th. This is an awkward one. If he can

get this on the Greenhill have played a mighty good shot. -- on the

green, he will have played. And he has. And that will go through the

back. Might not be all that bad. It scuttles through the back. Tricky to

get down in two. So many deliberations over this shot for

Danny Willett. Just over the edge. 125, 130. Too much spin and it might

come all the way back down the slope. Try to get it beyond the

flag. There we go. Very nicely played.

Kaymer to drop just one... A catalogue of errors on the 11th hole

the Kaymer. And his round had been so impressive as well. A real shame.

But perhaps of his own making. Now, Danny Willett on the seventh. Some

trouble for his playing partner Scott Hend. But Willett for his

birdie. He's given it a race. Not too far

from going all the way down the front. Now, Chris Wood. Came out of

the bunker to here for his closing birdie. A very good chance here on

the 18th. Could have been a miraculous finish. Birdies on the

14th and 16th as well. But still a 68 for Chris Wood. He sits alongside

Julien Quesne. He is in that group of 6-under par but could have been

better. Here's the result of that little chip from Scott Hend. No...

That's gone on as well. At least one shot will go for the Australian.

Testy putt for Willett. This for a par.

Now, Scott Hend to drop just one on the seventh, which he manages, but

he is down in that group of 9-under. Two behind Danny Willett. So,

slipping away from Danny Willett a little bit. Chris Wood with his 68,

leaving him 6-under par and having a chat with Hazel.

A five hyphen five finish in that round and I sensed a bit of

frustration today, would I be right? I've played lovely today. I didn't

birdie one par five. So the par fives here are very score full. I

had a 5-iron into 18 and it caught the bunker by a yard and then a yard

further left and it's maybe five feet away. Yeah, it's frustrating

when you feel like you leave a few out there.

Kaymer for a birdie at the 12th and he gets it. Thank goodness for that.

Dropped two strokes at the last hole and now back to 7-under. Note of the

14th, and Thomas Aiken. -- now to the 14th. The South African moves to

6-under. A big group on 6-under. Well, Yang taking the aerial route

here on the ninth. A lot of trees have been cleared out there to the

left-hand side. Silver birch trees. Keep on rolling.

Up to the 18th. Hatton, who has had a super round. It just ran out of

steam. That is a par five finish. A good round of golf from Tyrrell

Hatton. He'll be our late tomorrow. 8-under. A good round, 66. -- out

late. Yang on the ninth for a par. No. After a good tee shot, Mr

Greenwald Lee for the left. -- missed the green wildly. Another

shot dropped. Nine holes played. Should have done better. Now, this

is what you call an up and under. You have to flip it up quickly or

you can roll it up over the bank. That's delightful. It is so, so

tricky. Impossible to leave it shot without leaving it in the bunker

almost. Can he finish it off, van Zyl? Can he save his par here at the

ninth? No. That was never running at the hole, was it? Very scrappy.

Willett. Second to the ninth. A flattish green. A straightforward

shot. Well, I find it hard to believe these talented players with

a short iron and that really is very poor.

Yang, second. Right at the 10th. That left for a par three. Danny

Willett's third shot to the ninth. The leaders are struggling. This

isn't easy. Shouldn't have been here. Sounded fluffy. That's the

price you pay for a poor second. But you're not alone, Daniel.

Yang is hanging in there but only just. Straight across the face of

the hole. So bogeys at nine and ten and he drops to 7-under. Ten, minus

ten. The first Asian player to win a

major Championship. The PGA in 2009. The last pair out here on the ninth.

For this shot for Willett. -- fourth shot. No. Well, from a beautiful

drive in the perfect spot... That's not dead yet. That's three, four

feet away. This is how it looks at the minute.

Danny Willett dropping a stroke. He leads by one from Scott Hend.

Tyrrell Hatton had a wonderful round at 66 and he is with Hazel.

So, congratulations. A whisker off the 65 and what a back nine for you

today. Yes, very happy with that. I think it's my lowest round here.

First round in the 60s so very pleased. How special is it to

produce a performance like that? And at a place that I know is really

special for you. Tell everyone why you love this place so much. I've

been walking around this place since I was five and I was in awe of the

guys inside the ropes, and for me now playing my third BMW PGA, it's

great. I love this event. COMMENTATOR: Second to the 10th and

this is awkward. Where is he going to land it? How is it going to

bounce? Westwood, nearing the end of his

round. And that is well done, 6-under, another birdie at the last

And he will be cheerful tomorrow. A small 1-shot lead.

Has he got it? Oh, no! I thought it might just run out. He dropped to

9-under. Scott Hend joint leader. A puff of wind behind us not help

Yang, trying to land it softly on the green. Trying to get it to come

down softly. He does, a little upslope, could not have pitched that

better. He will have an equal chance. Standing a little below the

ball, Scott Hend. It will move a little bit to the left in the F. Oh,

dear, yes! Look at that! Foot further, it would have stuck in the

rough and been nigh on impossible. A birdie chance, wonderful shot from

Scott Hend. Jaco van Zyl, the yawning bunker short of the flag,

but he has seen his playing partner put a very good shot in here.

Elegant swing, a cry of, be good. Landing so softly. Just hanging on.

On the very edge of the green. It is going to break hard to his right. He

will stab it forward. Too difficult. It better sit down or

it is going to go and go. Just about managers to. -- it's just about

manages to. So, Willett and Hend, one quarter

today, and a chance for why you Yang to get back into things. -- Y E

Yang. That is slipping away from him.

Bogey on the ninth, bogey on the 10th and 11th, can easily happen

around here that Danny Willett is acting 8-under par. Hend has a

chance to extend his lead now. And it goes, three for him to the five

four Willett and Hend has a two shot lead. Van Zyl for an eagle will take

into 8-under. He makes his birdie there. So,

7-under par. And up-and-down day but hanging in there.

So, YE Yang, a glorious second shot into the 12th. This for three to

take into 9-under. He does not convince on the putts, YE Yang. But

it is a 2-putt birdie. He will move to 8-under alongside Hatton and

Willett. So, suddenly, things are comfortable

for Scott Hend, and again he has not had to do too much. Level par for

his round but two shots clear from Tyrell Hatton, a marvellous 66 which

has catapulted him up the board. Lee Westwood is alongside Chris Wood.

They are getting in contention as well ahead of the final day.

The 18th, Lee Westwood's second to the par-5. Water left, bunker on the

right, and narrow parting surface. -- putting surface. He has left

himself a pretty tricky one but it is on dry land.

Danny Willett, 3-wood off the tee, he has left himself a 4-iron. You

can deceive the pin just above the shaft of his club. The left-hand

side of the green. It pot up on him, and out into the

front right bunker. A massive drive leaves Scott Hend

with a mid iron. Picking the wind is becoming a problem.

It had a soft bounce, I have seen them go to that little wooden fence.

A lovely car therefore a hole in one.

Ducks, everyone, duck! Oh, my goodness! I hope that was not

someone's head. Catch! It is still bouncing! He will have to get his

own car for that one. Someone is going to stop it. The Marshall is

after it. Westwood, a little pitch to hear and

it goes in, so Lee Westwood finishes birdie, birdie. So often can be done

here at Wentworth. Back in 35, out in 33. 68, not a blemish on the

card, and 7-under par, right in there. Hend is the leader, to clear

at the moment, about 2-putt, but down in two is going to do. Judged

that very nicely. Can Yang make his par? What a great forehand, trouble

off the tee, he stays at 8-under. A fabulous finish to this course with

the fives offering something. After a bit of help from his caddy, he is

leaning towards the left edge. It turns a little to the right. Oh, no,

pushed it. Did not allow enough. Well, par, after a good tee shot,

you would have thought he would have made a birdie.

He likes this little rescue, does Mr Yang.

Oh, my goodness me. Good luck with that one! He has got a good line,

looks to have a backswing but he is just trying to avoid that left-hand

fairway bunker popping into position. Straight back. That was

square on middle stump, the sound it made!

The leader is in bother, Peter. When you hit a tree three feet in front

of you, it seems a bit silly. Chipped it in the ditch? No, it is

all right. Danny Willett got a good shoot off the back of the bunker.

Was not pleased with his drive, it has not done too badly, the good

line to come into the 13th. Someone like it. I am not sure Danny

did, though. It is fine. Good for distance. There is a lot of change

happening here in the 13th. Yang from the back of the 14th. If you

talk about delicate shots, it could be very good.

Well, you could not do it much better than that. If it went in the

hole, if it had gone in! That was a classic little dab. He leads by two,

but he has played three already on the 13th, Scott Hend, and 112 to the

flag. Can he salvage the situation? He certainly can. That to drop just

one, damage limitation of the highest order from Scott Hend.

Playing hard to get, this is. She is not at all interested in the Gulf or

him! Just fell away at the end. Stop the

rot. This putt of Hend, for a very

adventurous five. What the journey. Only one drop shot.

Hend still leads, but only by one after salvaging that bogey on the

13th. Tyrrell Hatton is looking better and better after his 66. Yang

and Willett a couple over for the day. And Lee Westwood, birdies on

the 17th and 18th for his 68. 23rd straight appearance in this

Championship. I know you are very proud of that. A bogey free 68. A

few chances tomorrow? It gives me a better chance than this morning. I

closed the gap little bit. It is not playing quite so easy today. I was

pleased that I did not make any mistakes. I did not really hole a

putt over four feet, so to shoot 68 shows the quality of my tee shot

game. You can see what is on offer for a

hole in one, he could not do it today, this is the last group. If

you can get just the right distance. You do not want to be too far beyond

the hole, though. Go back, go back! So close to going all the way back

down there. That is fast, fast down that slope. They will be wondering

why there is so little applause while Hend keys up.

His tee shot on the way. Will it towards the back of the green. It

will drift away but on the same level. That is not too bad. That was

a cracking tee shot from YE Yang on the 15th, a little rescue club

again. And that is just as QWERTY, nasty,

unpleasant, horrible, awful, goodbye!

Here he goes, Hend, he has got to get the speed right and the slope.

The wider you go, the slower you have got to go. It is running out of

speed. Just fell away at the death. Not bad.

YE Yang after that second shot of the deepest mediocrity, a bunker on

the 15th. Looking to get it to roll out down the slope. It looks like he

is going to slip away from the group. They are all coming back to

the field, a lot of players coming back into contention. Willett's putt

is tricky, way out to the left, quite a big change in elevation to

the high ground, to the top of the rich. It should start to go down and

turn to the right, gathering speed. Not bad, four feet, but you cannot

dab at them, they will end up going way past. Yang to save par on the

15th. The leaders are struggling at the moment, the last couple of

groups are out on the course. He will slip back to 7-under. If you

look at Hend and Willett, 2-over on their round, Jaco van Zyl, 3-over as

well. All having trouble. Kaymer to finish, in for a birdie. It is a

good round, it could have been so much better. Bogeys on the 16th and

17th, that stubble on the 11th. -- that double on the 11th. Hend for a

bogey. This is his third putt, he rattled it in. We knew it was a

tricky putt, it cost him a shot. Willett with one of those! Well

done. Good for the bit feet, and just the

right edge with a bit of pace and in she goes. -- good four and a bit

feet. Drops back to 6-under. Scott Hend has crashed his tee shot.

Something good is slipping away over the last few holes. That is a very

loose shot with that club in his hand. Does not look more than a

7-iron. Must be at least seven, I think. To Mr Green as badly as that,

with such a short club, not good at all. -- to miss the green. Hend for

four, going up the hill. This must have, depending on the

speed, at least two feet tomorrow. If he hits it too hard, it will go

whizzing by. Not high enough. Not quite high enough. Never high

enough. Do you think he talks in his sleep as well? After that excellent

results, he never looked comfortable.

Cord grips. Danny Willett to the 60s, if he gets it right, it is like

going down the pluck the sink, you have got to get it to the sink

first. -- down the plug hole of the sink. Pitching it past, any spin on

it? Oh, no, that is not fair. The 18th, 2-under. A big drive. Not much

of a target, though, this 18th. Looks tiny from that end but that is

a cracking shot. It could have gone in! Look where he is aiming this,

Peter. He is aiming at eight feet to the right. I hope he has got it

right. Well, a very, very good effort indeed. That was a splendid

go. Out onto the 18th, this for an eagle. And he had done it, well

done, what a brilliant finish. Suddenly he has 4-under and very

much in the picture. Despite having a very scrappy round, three birdies

and seven. A couple of birdies and an eagle at the last.

Another stroke going, in that group at 7-under par, so he is now

outright leader. What a curious day and expect the

three leaders have all gone backwards and instead, it is the

young man from Marlow, not 30 minutes from this beautiful venue,

Tyrrell Hatton, who holds the outright lead after that wonderful

round of 66 today. One shot ahead of Westwood, Yang, Willett and henna.

-- Hend. He need a straight shot. Not a lot

of room to get in, but anything left leaves him a horrible chip pitch to

the flag. Oh, I do not know what happened

there. That could have been in the ladies locker room. Very, very

strange. Yang with the longer of the tee

shots. He has still got along the second shot because he had gone a

little bit down the left side. The lucky. Oh, my goodness!

A big swing, do you think one of those Nicholson specials? May be. He

has tried it. That is a fine result. Mr Yang. He has got to float this

up. Land it as softly as he can and it has gone by. Virtually impossible

to get that by the hole. This would be a bit of a get out of

jail free card. People have missed it on the right.

After such a promising start, 1-under after eight holes, he is

4-over par for his round. Let's see if Yang can bring some brightness to

proceedings. Birdie putt on the last, too much? Only one player in

the last eight groups out and apart, that was Martin Kaymer who had his

own problems. He finished with 70. YE Yang is in with 75. A lot of 75s

out there in the final few groups. Perhaps that is about par. What you

think he is hitting from here, five? Five or six. Not a very long shaft.

Got the length of the green to come up. As long as it is straight, it is

OK. I think he is far enough. Only just, but that could be all right. A

little more than all right. A bit of good fortune, a good result. Great

result, lucky. He cannot afford any mistakes here. We can't see the

ball, nestling down, you have got to loft the club, hit it hard, over the

water. And stop it before the bunker at the back of the green, this is

note pushover. Stop, stop, he cries. It has sailed over everything. It

has been a struggle. How's that for a scene? How is that

for a scene? Hospitality is full. Masters champion being welcomed by

his hometown crowd. A wonderful setting.

Played it beautifully. That was a dab hand, that just caught the edge,

if it had, it would have killed it. That was a great result, absolutely

splendid. This for the outright lead to get to 9-under. A terrific second

shot, brave tee shot, a lovely iron, the aggression this time pays off.

Round in 73. 9-under and leading by one.

Although it is a short putt, it is missable if you do not get the line

right and the speed. You can spin out, left to right, just inside the

left lip, really, with a little bit of speed, not too much. Well done. A

struggle but it is over. And we live to fight another day.

They call Saturday moving day, but it has been moving backwards day for

the co-leaders. The joint leaders overnight, Scott Hend still in pole

position but one shot worse than before. And thank goodness from his

perspective that eagle at the last. But Danny Willett has been one of

the major stories of the day. Having been in that overnight lead, it is

4-over par round of 76, and he will starts tomorrow in a tie for fifth

place. We had everything under control nicely and then a couple of

bad shots and bad decisions, Mr putts and it slipped away. Same

thing, relatively simple par fives on the back nine and we played them

badly again. We're not quite fit. It is disappointing to be there or

thereabouts and them to play poorly like we did yesterday. After the

range, see if we can set something going tomorrow.

You had a two shot lead, then suddenly the wheels began to come

off, so it that eagle of the last, -- at the last, how much of a rescue

without? I was 3-under par coming into the last, making for all three

was a bonus. I do not really look at the leaderboard so I did not know.

It was a struggle, but steadied a bit coming in in. I know you have

won tournaments in seven different countries, two on the European Tour,

how big is this Championship and how big the wind would this be worth a

happen? Obviously it is a big one, but to put it in perspective, I

treat it like another tournament. If things happen afterwards, you go

back and retrospectively think about it but right now it is just another

golf tournament, I just tried to do what I do for a living.

This has been a most unusual Saturday on this PGA champion ship.

Scott Hend at the head of the field, but he leads outright only by one

shot. It is the master champion Danny Willett in a share for fifth,

he is going to have to launch his assault on the title from three

shots behind. A cracking data to other English men, Tyrrell Hatton

will be going out with Hend in the final playing pair tomorrow, and Lee
