Day 1 Golf: Ryder Cup

There really is nothing quite like this in sport. The first tee on a

chilly first morning of the Ryder Cup. It is noisy, boisterous and

partisan. It is golf, all right, but not as we normally know it.

Welcome to Chicago and the Medinah Country Club for three days of the

most passionate, nerve-shredding drama. It is Europe against the

United States of America, the Ryder Cup. Be it is the honour of my life

to welcome you to the 39th playing of the Ryder Cup. Ryder Cup golf

his heart and soul, and laying it on the line. We will have three

incredible days of golf here at Medinah. We are still a fearless

competitors. I know how much you and your team want to win this

lovely golden trophy back, but I can tell you, we have every

intention of taking it back home with us. Home advantage this time

for the United States. Hoping to take it back, just as they did in

Kentucky, when Paul a sinker -- Paul a losing their captain them to

win over Nick Faldo's side. Nick Faldo has -- Davis Love has

assembled a really strong side. Including Phil Mickelson, he

becomes the USA's most capped players in history, with nine

players in history, with nine appearances. But it also features

four reduced, but all of them have been in hot form -- for rookies.

All of them except a Jim Furyk have won at least the tournament this

year. Europe have won the last five Ryder Cups, including this Monday

on a Celtic Manor two years ago, with Graeme McDowell sparking a

stampede and celebrations for Colin Montgomerie's side. McDowell is

back for more and part of Jose Top players. For Justin Rose

returns after missing Celtic Manor, as does Sergio Garcia. Scotland's

Paul Lawrie makes a remarkable return, 13 years after his only

other cap, and Ian Poulter, the top scorer for Europe in the last two

contests. And Nicolas Colsaerts is Europe's only debutant, from

Let's go -- if you're a golf fan. What can people expect. What has

been set up for the 13th man, the crowd? There is no rough around, so

plenty of birdies, but you have to get the ball in the right spot. We

will see plenty of them, so the crowd will be geed up. We cannot

believe the atmosphere on the first tee. The cries will be ringing

around the golf course, and hopefully some for Europe. All 24

players ranked inside the top 35 in the world. On paper, the closest

match in pairings in history. greatest head to head we have ever

seen. The players are playing well, birdies galore, so we will be

fantastic. The standard of practice from the players has been

unbelievable, so we will see one of the greatest contests we have ever

seen. It is magic. And here we go! These were the players chosen to

kick things off on the opening morning. Europe opting to put out

the Northern Irish power pairing, both US Open champions, Rory

McIlroy and Graeme McDowell, taking on Jim Furyk and the rocky, Brandt

Snedeker. Keegan brat Leith and Phil Mickelson facing Luke Donald

and Sergio Garcia, who have never lost together -- Keegan Bradley.

Jason Dufner teamed up with Zach Johnson to play Lee Westwood and

Italy's Francesco Molinari. What a 4th match of. The established

pairing of Steve Stricker and Tiger Woods against tried and trusted

English duo, Ian Poulter and Justin Rose. Two years on from Celtic

manager -- Celtic Manor, it is Graeme McDowell who has the honour

loud. They will have to deal with a lot of raucous noise and applause

if they miss a shot. They will have to stay very focused. For the first

time, there is some red on the left of the screen. The momentum of this

event is amazing. All the group's move round the golf course and it

can completely change. The whole momentum can change in 15 minutes.

The top match got away with it, just about. It is difficult to get

and the train left and then it was hard to get back. You know what it

is like to beat Bubba Watson because he did at Celtic Manor, but

getting back into the spirit of it today, you itching to get going.

Was there anything you felt you could do as the match went on?
