Europe's Ryder Cup ambitions seemed an impossible dream but Ian Poulter

inspired a new charge to renew hope for the European team. Plenty of

history has that deficit been overturned. In 1991 America pulled

the cup from behind. Now Europe are doing the chasing and their captain

believes that a good start could yet turn the tide.

The players that are playing well out there are trying to win their

matches early. To win this Ryder Cup we need to take care of the big

players. That is what we have tomorrow.

So this is the all-important singles draw. Europe require eight

points to retain the trophy. And the first three men in the draw for

Europe must deliver to keep the contest alive. Some wonderfully

intriguing match-ups. Tiger Woods has lost all three of his matches

this week. Back to the circus that was the

first tee for the opening match. The home support in full voice but

respectful when Luke Donald stepped up to kick things off.

And he took a perfect drive. But Bubba Watson, his opponent, does

not like the quiet life. He asked for some noise and he got it!

It finished in play after a friendly bounce off an adoring

crowd. The Masters champion really raised

the temperature, rolling this one in for a three. But Luke Donald

lived up to his billing, responding in kind. Meanwhile there was drama

of a different kind for Rory McIlroy, who had to be raced to the

course in an unmarked police car. He had mixed up his time-zones.

He just got there in time for the tee off against Keegan Bradley.

I played great. I was very solid. I did not do much wrong. He made a

few mistakes, and I took advantage. There is so much going on behind

you, but how do you think it looks for Europe? We have got off to a

good start, but there's a lot of tight matches in the middle. We

many points are we going to win by? But believe it or not, the

KEN BROWN: I don't think they can believe it. Olazabal is still not

sure what's going on. He is desperate to win the match,

although the draw makes sure that we take the trophy home. This

trophy is founded on pride and are winners, there are losers.

PETER ALLISS: My old family has been involved in this game for more

than 100 years, but if my dear old father were alive today, he would

have to say, we have seen nothing more exciting. Wonderful play from

both sides, but for Europe to have one this afternoon, as they have

done, has been absolutely superb. They will go on writing about it

for years and years and years to come.

night, when we got off the golf course, those last two matches were

absolutely huge. We got into the team room and everybody was pumped.

We were four points down, and everybody was energised. I just

thought at that stage, we have got a chance, we are within four. The

second the pairings came out, we knew we were strong. We were front

loaded, but we were back loaded, we were middle loaded. We had 12 guys

today who played with heart and passion like I have never seen

before. It is incredible. How much do you owe to Ian Poulter and his

amazing fightback last night for galvanising the team? Listen, that

was key. I said it last night. If we had lost either of those two

matches, today would have been mission impossible. But thanks to

what Ian Poulter did, the trophy goes back to Europe. I have never

experienced anything like this. I have been a throw a few different

things, but this is something else. Just take us through your emotions

and your thoughts, on that last and your thoughts, on that last

putt. It was amazing. I knew that this was the putt for the Ryder Cup.

I was saying, come on, you have to make it, you have no choice. Just

make it, don't think about anything else, make it. And it went in.

that moment? I don't know, I was so happy. I have never had that

feeling before, even when I won the PGA. I am so happy for Martin

Kaymer. He is under so much pressure, and he gets the point we

needed. It is just amazing. Rory, Jose Maria Olazabal has invoked the

He has been so passionate. He lives and breathes the Ryder Cup. In the

team room, he has made us cry in the team room this week. Some of us

have broken down into tears with some of his speeches. To play so

well out here today, knowing that Seve is looking down on us, it has

just been one of the most incredible days that I have ever

had on a golf course. You invoked the spirit of Seve, and clearly it

was a big part of this - how much personally does this moment mean to

you? It means everything - for him. And for you. And for me, yes.

Emotional scenes. This was surely one of the greatest comebacks in

sporting history, any place, any time. We will always remember

Medinah. Chicago, it is Europe's kind of town after all, and they
