the 141st Open Championship. On Sunday evening, who will walk

between the grandstands to become the 11th champion here in the Red

Rose county? What an amazing number of stories it has produced over the

years. Perhaps the most significant was the victory of Tony Jacklin in

1969. He remains the last Englishman to win in England. But

recently the Northern Ireland contingent have pulled their weight

in Major golf and could it be that the claret jug remains in the UK

hands for another year? I do like this course. It is very fair but it

is very tough. I am hitting greens and I hope I can keep doing that.

Has he got it? Yes, he has! I am hitting the ball great. It is the

best all year and I am keeping it in play and out of the bunkers. I

hope I can do that in this field and I have got a great chance.

in lovely condition and the fairways are immaculate. We hope it

tries out a bit but this is an Not far from the ever bright and

breezy Blackpool. This is one of the classic seaside places. Oath

of real estate. We have been told the British Summer Time might make

all over the world. It is 6:30am precisely this morning that 52-

year-old Englishman Barry Lane struck the first shot. One quarter

of a century after playing his first Open and the former Ryder Cup

player got us underway. This is how it looks at the putting green. We

are getting straight out there because Darren Clarke is making his

way TBT. What a start we have got today. It should be perfect. No

today. It should be perfect. No doubt about that. It is a bit damp

and breezy. But it will be hard to come by birdies. The fairways are

deep and you have got to keep the ball in play. Jeev Milkha Singh has

champion. A five-way tie for the lead at 1-under. The last person to

qualify for the Open Championship. He is just continuing his fine form

back on the first. We have had some strange conditions leading up to

the first round but this morning, a bit overcast but actually quite

pleasant out there on the golf course. And of course, the

defending champion. How quickly that year has gone. He returned the

trophy with one or two things in it. He had a bit of an adventure. He

has got a good record at this course in his two previous trips.

He will be quite looking forward to it. And there it is, the first hole.

Today it is claimed to wo four yards. -- it is playing 204 yards.

49 years of age and still going two birdies so far on the opening

hole. 204 yards. It is quite unusual to be that precise with the

first swing of the day. The big man from Fiji is in fine form. He is

playing well and he is getting Milkha Singh has got a very unusual

golf course this week is spectacular. Magnificent in its

condition. We can have a look at the leaderboard. We have got a

five-way tie at the top. Tim Clarke is back in the swing of things

after injury problems earlier this year. 156 players in the field this

week. And that is for the 141st Open Championship. The best week,

my favourite week of the year. There has been a lot said about the

golf course this week with the heavy rough around the fairways.

It is not the biggest piece of land, based at golf course. Just under

7,100 yards. The first tee is isolated and you cannot feel the

wind. What are the conditions like, Maureen? It has been a great

welcome for Darren Clarke. He was striding up like a gunslinger in a

He is unbelievable. He hits it so hard but it stays low and it is

almost beyond belief. His left wrist is just in a really sharp

position. Where it comes down, nobody knows. I think that is in

in his step, glint in his eye. good performance at the US Open

here, as it can on any links course. Because it is a small acreage, and

the wind whistles across, every hole can be tricky. There is not

And back to the top we can see the name of Darren Clarke, the man

defending his title. And of all the people out on the course right now,

James Driscoll started with a birdie at the first but has dropped

shots and not the greatest of starts. Tiger Woods is something

back to his best. Well-documented problems on and off the course in

the last couple of years and many questions about if he will pursue

the Jack Nicklaus record of 18 Majors. This is what he had to say

It is four years since your last Major title. Do you feel a sense of

anxiety about when and if? I just try and put myself there. And if I

continue putting myself there enough times, I will win

championships. Impatience? Not at all. I had to go through that

process to get healthy again. Missing championships because of

the problems in a couple of years was not all that fun. Just because

I was injured. I think that if I am healthy I can prepare properly for

the championships and I can get one of the 14 Majors that Tiger

easy as it could. Soft fairways, which makes them feel a bit wider

and you are not bouncing off into the horrible rough. This is one of

my very favourite courses. By no stretch of the imagination are

these conditions difficult. If this was 25 miles inland, that would be

that but we happen to be 500 yards from the sea. We will not find a

course playing easier at this moment. Maybe for the next couple

of days. Make hay while you can. Still a bit of water in the bunkers

Tiger Woods. Hello? What happened there? You take the high road and I

shot. But he has got a great short game technique. So many of them

recovery from Sergio Garcia. Get horrible second shot if not

a very strong birdie. Who needs greens and regulation? He is always

very brisk and busy. Great fun to interesting. About 470 yards.

Bunkers everywhere. 242 yards to carry the bunkers on the right. We

have got bunkers on the left at 273. It is like a game of chess. But he

is brilliant. There are not many people with a golf brain like Tiger

Woods. He has got the 3-wood out. We can see the bunkers on the left

that you have been talking about. He seems to like it. He has whacked

that 250 yards and that is perfect. A very good hole, his third hole

with a slightly raised green. And in between the players and that

bungalow, we have got the railway line. They have stopped the trains

this week to avoid disrupting the players. They did not do that in my

day! We had a Zeppelin's coming ever. They made a lot of noise.

This hole is typical of many holes. The bunker is just placed in a

position that the players do not want. We will see many clubs off

the tee. And if you are really aggressive you can go with a drive

but we have got severe rough and you have got to be careful. What a

horrid thing, to put bunkers where the players did not like them! Very

underhand it. -- underhand. He cannot be over there, surely?

think he is. That is very thick staff over there. -- staff. --

stuff. 250 yards and he is in trouble. Lee Westwood on the 4th

here. He had a horrible double bogey at the third. The that is

better. You have got to be philosophical. You know that you

are going to hit some bad shots. If they all come at once, or not.

But today it is all very, very mild. Very simple. This man is usually a

master of the bunkers. We have had people swooning left right and

to read because we have not got much there. Not far away at all. A

big and flat green. That will be a part. A great effort from the

Masters champion. We all talk about that wonderful shot that he played

in the play-offs. He could not have done that if he had been right

handed. It he was left-handed he could have twisted at around.

do not understand the philosophy. It is considered old-fashioned if

you're talking about finding the middle of the green. I don't

understand that. Amazing to think he was 51st in the world rankings.

On the way back. It has been a privilege to watch him play. For 12

certainly is not! That is a beauty. Down that side, you cannot see the

pin. He would have thought his work was done but never sure. He always

entrails every time for the greenkeepers. But the result was

not too good. Paul Lawrie leads the way, but early days. The first

round of the Championship. Only a handful players under-par. It is a

good golfing morning. The sun is not shining but it is perfect for

look down the list, you can see many past champions. Great winners

of events all around the world. It is nice to see Tim Clark back again

but he is 2-over par. He got off to Royal Lytham has produced 10

winners of the Championship since 1926 and one of the most popular

was Tony Jacklin, after an 18 year wait for an English winner in 1969.

It is amazing to think it has been 20 years since the last English

winner, Nick Faldo. Both will be in commentary in the next couple of

days. Tony Jacklin is set and ready to go and he is out with Dan Walker.

Welcome to a rather empty 18th. The clubhouse is behind us. Barry Lane

will be here in a couple of minutes. But this is where the potential

champion will be making the wok. This man did it famously in 1969,

Tony Jacklin. Talk us through that time. Do you remember everything

about it? I was 145 paces and the pen was at the right half of the

green. I hit a seven-iron into the green. Bob Charles was about 20

feet away and had already played his shot. We have got famous

footage of you having just one issue on the time. What happened?

After I hit my second shot, even before it landed, I had a massive

roar and people were all around me even before the ball hit the ground

and I lost it. I thought that if I stopped... Can we get a nice little

round of applause, just a report? Take us back to 1969. -- just a

little bit? You had to win it on the 18th. It is never over until it

is over. Bob Charles was a great putter. I was anticipating him

probably making his shot. I wanted to put a bit of pressure on but I

was 15 feet away but you can have a bit of a seizure. I was pretty

confident but it was not done. I was waving but inside I thought...

I felt pretty good about it. He actually missed his shot and I

ended up making mine within about half an inch and that was that. It

was a tremendous relief. The pressure during that week was

building and building. The home crowd was anticipating. You name it,

it was a melting pot. What did it mean to be the Open champion? You

were a two time winner in the end. It was hysterical because it

brought about a great era for European golf. -- historical.

before and if I had not done that, I do not think I would have had the

fortitude here. But it was a progression of improvement and it

was my time. I was ready and I thoroughly enjoyed it. But inside

you think, I must not let the people damp. And ultimately you

green? How far can you get to the edge? About three or four yards is

the smallest distance from the edge much wind. He was still not able to

knock it on for two. The course is very different from you're day,

Tony. They have cleaned through -- a few trees out. The ball is going

the other side of the course over the top of the railway lines. There

are few trees on this course, which is quite unusual for links golf

courses. They have trimmed a lot of bushes back, opened it up.

Watson had a beautiful iron shot -- Tory? I watched him play some

audacious shot at Augusta. For the shot he played over the trees, I

thought I'd seen her everything in my life but that was unbelievable.

The extraordinary fellow on an extraordinary character. A long way

to go yet, a left-hander, a left- style. When he putts, everything

looks right. Well turned out. Two under par. The par here is 70. It

greens are running at a very nice pace. If you try to compare it to

your clubs at home, for the majority of you, when you think

you're greens are running fairly fast, that is about the speed here.

When the really get quick, like the Augusta, they would be a lot, lot

faster. These are a sort of medium pace and the greens are fairly flat,

there are not too many vicious slopes on the greens here. Someone

said this morning, you should call Johnson. I love the way he goes

about it. A great competitor. Justin Rose really don't have any

still salvage a par. He has got to pull himself together, otherwise

he's going to make been here for the weekend very difficult indeed.

There is Tiger, on the right hand side. There is plenty of room.

about the same for the next couple of days. It might get windy on

Sunday. Hopefully, we won't have any rain. We have had enough of

that! A lot of big names. Mark Cocker Beckett, former winner, --

how relatively near to the golf course is the sea but you might as

well be a million miles away from the sea. A Graeme McDowell for a

expecting good things from him this week. I always think he looks very

jaunty. Lee Westwood rattles one in. That's more like it, boy. Yes, good

stuff. He has had four birdies so far, a double bogey and a bogey,

out in 33. That is one under. If he could get back in 36, 35, get in

before the wind might get up... Once again there's a bunker down

the left which has to be avoided. That's the reason Tiger is using

the 8th, 416 yards, playing up to a high green. Just six feet for Bubba

Watson, after a beautiful wedge shot, maybe on the left edge. You

would expect him to make this to little bit more than six feet. Not

bad. Drop-shot, three birdies. Considering he is not really used

to do this sort of golf, well, he is, because there is no wind,

perfect conditions, but he's an American who has not played

overseas very often. Adam Scott, for an eagle. This is to tie the

lead. He leaves it short. What a difference that putt has made it to

his confidence. Yes, he's such a brilliant player. It was getting to

be rather embarrassing, using a short putt. He doesn't look very

pretty with it. It is a monster putter in length, and he does not

look very comfortable in it. It rhythm, a bit like Rafa Nadal! A

looking down. This is right up at the far end of the course. A narrow

chamber of land. The spectators don't get up into this top part of

the course, there's no room for them, so they wait on the left-hand

side. They are not allowed up by revels in it. Yes, he relishes it.

-- doesn't he? That's the way you have got to be. A couple of years

ago at Pebble Beach, and early on, he was there in contention at the

Olympic club for the US Open. 12. Great par three on this golf

course. One of the great par threes in links golf, especially when the

wind blows across. Now, that's a bad putt. I'm surprised that

someone of his skill... Sometimes I think his putt a goes back too far.

His backswing is so long. -- putter. Here is not good shot. I remember

him as an amateur, he turned pro, and then he found the long putter

up his left arm and rolls them in just like that. He has done well,

coming back from two over-par earlier on. Working his way back.

He's a very good player. An accumulator of money. A rather

vulgar thing to say but nevertheless, you need a bit of

reach? No. I think they're so used to putting on lightning-fast greens,

when they get some were a little bit slower, they are a bit lost.

They were like that last week. Now, Tiger. Got to be accurate with the

second shot to the eight. The whole position is Bailey on the green. --

barely on the green. When it at the front like that, no point schooling

back off the green. That's perfect. With the greens holding, you can

afford to be 5, 6, 7 yards beyond the pin. Or that's where you try to

aim at. That is a good result for Tiger. This probably 20 feet, or so,

up to the green. We have had a few go over to the bunker on the right

and a couple on the left. You can see how much room there is behind

the flag. Not that you want to good 20 yards behind, but there is room.

Everybody talks about being so accurate, so perfect, on a distance

but, of course, they still make mistakes. It's easy to make a

mistake with this one. If you get too greedy, it will roll back 20

yards to the green. If you give it that little bit extra, it easier to

be 20 feet long. He needs to be re- accurate, Justin Rose, from 171

at all. Is extraordinary, isn't it? He came out full of beans, chatting

away, full of confidence, looking forward to playing Tiger Woods in

the Open Championship and its absolute misery. Ernie Els.

Something else, I used to call him his forties. Garcia, a little

nine-iron compared to Tiger with an eight iron, so he should certainly

be able to get this one to stop quickly. This is a dangerous shot,

I think, because if he hits it a little bit heavy, he could do what

Justin Rose has done. If he hits it flat out, I think he will be all

it, as well. Well, they don't give each other that extra five yards.

They don't play that sort of golf now. I couldn't agree more. They

seem to have lost the art of playing hard shots and flighting

the ball in a different way. They are all bashing it through the air.

Now, a superb tee shot. Nine holes completed. And a very nice nine

holes indeed. Three under. One drop shot at the 6th. Darren Clarke for

birdie. He is three over as we be there for the weekend, the

on them. There is no dramatic slopes like we see it so many

courses, particularly in new course Thailand, one under. 16th hole, 386

second shot. It's so important to take advantage of this weather, the

advantage of links golf, so many choices but this type of shot.

Tony. Exciting things going on. impressive, Tony? He is. Anything

left of the pin, a big, there is danger of going in. But he wasn't

having any of it. He can play relatively conservative golf coming

yard to go, he thought he had found the bottom of the cup. You have had

a chance to play with Jack Nicklaus a lot. How would you compare him

strong. Jack was so mentally strong. He knew how to charge his way

around a golf course. They both had the power, both great putters. More

than anything, the course management was there. They had

steady head on their shoulders, total confidence in their ability.

misjudgment of distance, and you throw strokes away and what is a

was so contained there I saw him earlier in the year. He was not

messing with his swing any more, he was just getting on with that.

Sergio Garcia, just waiting for the players to move from the green

plays a little bit shorter than its Justin Rose here at the weekend.

Sergio Garcia at two over par, you really need to make a score on this

front nine. As you did all those years ago. Coming back, it gives

birdies, certainly no more bogeys on the card. He has gone half a

club too far. He's got a very awkward up and down. Nine bunkers

on that hole. It is interesting, because if you do not chase the

flag, and play for the middle of the green, it is quite simple. But

if you take the pin on, and you play it too far, you're in trouble.

Does dumpers it -- the bunkers are The 13th certainly offers a birdie

chance. Excellent. That was a more, the last week's winner. He

won and a playoff at the Scottish Open. That got him into the open. A

good opening round. Anything a 70 or better, you'll be delighted with

tense second shot. The 10th green slopes from back to front and if

you pitch on it, you can get a bit of spin on it easily. If we look at

their practise green, a few players preparing themselves. Have you ever

stayed in that house? That scene has not changed much over 50 years!

Scott and Tiger Woods lead at four under par. Tiger Woods is playing

flawless golf, hasn't missed a short yet. Delightful to watch. A

couple of wins for Jason, there. A lot of players on good form. Well,

my goodness! Some people like this sort of thing. Would you think,

Tony? I get enough ups and downs on the golf course, thank you very

much! I do not need to invite them. I can think of anything worse! -- I

nearly 45 degrees to his target! All the rules go out the window

when it comes to Watson! He rips it down the fairway. He's so exciting

to watch, I must say. This is the Tiger Woods crook. Justin Rose went

through the group back. He tried to play a fancy chip shot and it did

not come off. He has left himself to be a nightmare. Five over par

and then the green runs away. He must have fond memories of every

hole, Tory? I do. This is where I played my first Open, back and 63.

Bob Charles' open. I played all four rounds and I was only 19. That

was the start of my love affair with love them. -- with this golf

highlight of my life up until that time. He has lost it! Out in 30.

seems clear to me that, unless you're going to be in the red at

the end of this first round, it is going to be hard to get back into

this Championship for anyone outside par, certainly. There are a

lot of players already shooting par Tiger Woods at the top of the

leader board, because you know he is not going to fold under pressure.

A couple of bunkers on the right hand side. There dangerously

positions. Tiger Woods, with this club, should have enough to get

past those. There is another bunker to the left hand side. I cannot see

another word that he likes. He's you can wander into a divot, and he

has it. He is in control of his game. My, what a championship this

and Darren Clarke. A birdie at the 11th. He is looking pretty handy at

three under-par. Adam Scott leading season he has started to believe

again and get back to the top, green. Can he get there, David?

nine, it is likely into the breeze. Not much. 278? It is a links course,

but it's right on the limit. Such a narrow entrance to thread your ball

by as they used to be in days gone by. I think they may stop them.

It's like aeroplanes flying over Augusta when the tournament is on.

It's not allowed any more. Here he is. Give this a good hit. Looking

to get to the front opening to this green. Not too much trouble. He has

done well. Ride through the gully of the bunkers. Straightforward

pitch up the green. A little He's only got his two-iron in the

back, though. It's another world, isn't it? Look at this. Just look

at this. Wonderful stuff. Unbelievable. Driving a two-iron.

Just 265 yards. Into a slight breeze. Unbelievable. They are

making a mockery of the game. didn't go that far on our holidays,

under so a little bit of momentum here. A six iron. A bit of breeze

coming off the left. Sounded sweeter off the face. Right into

threes in golf, this one. It is but all those years ago, we were

hitting longer clubs coming in lower trajectory. It may this hole

of far more difficult. The wind usually whistling from left to

right pushing you out of bounds. But, on this benign a day, hitting

a medium lofted clubs. To me, it seems a lot easier. It is easier,

Bubba Watson. They took out that burn on the left which made some

hope. A sharp angle out of that spindly stuff, otherwise you go to

the left. Super shot. He made it It can go the other way. Justin

Garcia. That might do something for him. Certainly Justin Rose needs

something to help him. This one from 133 yards into a little breeze

it would have been sad if that lie would have cost him because there

was absolutely nothing wrong with the tee shot. An interesting way,

though. He was beating down on it but my goodness. Jammed it right

down there, drove it out of the in there. That is serious power. I

remember Arnold Palmer could do that. His arms are working it out

of the crater. Yes, a lot of players would see that ball in that

lie and give up. But not him. Lee Westwood now. It is always going to

be an awkward little pitch and he's elected to go with the putt of. It

is a long putt. He has misjudged it badly. -- go with the putter.
