Welcome back to the Walker Cup. The 43rd playing of this team

competition between some of the foremost amateurs in the world. You

join us in the middle of a deluge here at royal Aberdeen lince and

yes I am going nowhere without this thing. It is throwing it down,

there has been a rumble of thunder and we are in the middle of the

afternoon single's matches. Eight of them this afternoon. Now, it was

Great Britain and Ireland who led going into this series by three

points to one after the morning and all looked good. Let me remind you

of the situation at the moment. Great Britain and Ireland up in

four, this afternoon, they were down in two and it was all square

in the other three matches, so it was fascinating, but right now,

conditions have become ultra challenging you have to say, as we

go through with many of the matches go through with many of the matches

he has not slipped himself fully into position. I think the rain is

starting to ease a whisker. It is a sandy soil, it will run through,

but links courses have their tipping points where the water

gathers. No sign of gathering water yet. No and Peter has this for a

perhaps than the professional counterparts in the Ryder Cup.

There is a bit of standing water there. It is beginning to pool a

little bit. It really is, it isn't very nice, is it? It is chasing us

round, the Scottish Open, that was a bit damp. I think is where that

fellow Tolkien gets his ideas. Britain in the summer time. Ryder

Cup. They all have their great moments of raining disaster. It

seems to be easing a little for a second or two. It comes and it goes,

and that is not going in. Well, yes, that is a five for Tom Lewis. A

loss of the hole, he goes one down, and fortunately, the rain is just,

well, I thought it was getting less but it is not. Horrible out here

guys. You see the course, the back nine to the left, feeding down

through the dunes and they come up on to slightly higher ground up

here. This is the third match between Andy Sullivan and Harris

English and Sullivan two up at the moment. You know who your friend

are in weather like this. I find shelter una friendly forest

umbrella. And mind you, the players, these players in the match seem to

be just going along like on roller coasters, because they are

you how difficult it is to stand up never mind produce golf of this

calibre. Both he and Andy Sullivan pouring in the putts. Hiding under

the umbrellas. He has won on the nationwide tour. He is one of the

few players you could see in the top 0 in the world in the next five

year, making that leap like Dustin Jonsson, like Web Simpson. There is

a look at the state of affairs. The red numbers show the players are up.

So Great Britain, Ireland up in four. And that one match between

Steven Brown and Russell Henley from Georgia, all square. It is

interesting how many good players have been produced by the Ryder Cup

for the home side. If you look down McElroy, Rose, Dyson, Luke Donald.

Graeme McDowell. Nick Doherty, a whole number of the last six or

seven years. Suddenly it blows there, and well, anom say e-- not

saying the sun is going to come out. It wouldn't surprise me if it

doesn't come out in half an how. Here is the 15th hole. A bonnie one.

This is nicely bunkered. Proper bunkers. It looks faz the green

stuff on that top clatter, or it should be, but it is the green at

the bottom here and the big bunker at the front, with the island in

the middle. It looks simple enough. You see left and right, there is

nasty thing clanging, clinging grass. You want to be on the

fairway here. You do. Now the rain has stopped, the wind is going to

dry us out. Blind tee shot. Guys can't see the fairway. TV tower, we

take a line on that. There is a bunker at 230 yards to carry down

the right hand side. Looking at the way the two guys hit it down the

Brown. Welcome back. Thank goodness that rain has passed us by. That

his heroics and St George, the way he played. A lot was made about the

way he looks like a young professional already, in the way he

carries himself. His swing. He is up against one of the best in Peter

Uihlein today. And that, well it has shot into the face and come

back a little bit. But soggy sand and not too far from the face, so

that is almost a shot penalty there. Jordan Spieth, he is playing

against. A splash down. Must be a puddle there. One of those little

hollows perhaps. There was an evil cackle as he hit that, as if there

was an old crone, laughing tat golfers as they walked past. There

is a bit of water. It will drain away quickly. Then the next shower

will come in! Beautiful piece of golfing land. Steven Brown, Russell

Henley, match five. Both these players lost this morning so one of

them being to get a point today and one isn't, unless of course they

line. You are playing down breeze and come back from ten, right to

the closing hole, theleth, back-in o the teeth of the breeze. There is

Steven Brown. Late run to get into the team. Tiptoeing round the

puddles. That is the state of all the matches at the moment. Great

Britain and Ireland up in three. United States up in two and three

matches are all square. Eight singles this afternoon, and the

four matches tomorrow morning, and old from port Stewart on the

Northern Irish coast. Playing this to win the hole. He is three up on

the US amateur champion, three up back-in to play. Shortish par four.

Never easy to pick your line. And currently, he is one down Tom Lewis.

I think this is a crunch match. If Tom can get something out of this

it looks like the rest of the team will do reasonably well. 3-1 lead

from this morning. Despite it being the first Match of the Day think it

is a critical one in the overall results for today's play. Let us go

back to the 11th. That should be Steven Brown, and Russell Henley

and we saw him giving his putt a decent effort. Russell Henley

perfect record p the Walker Cup when he lost against Tom Lewis and

Michael Stewart because he played in Meirion a couple of years ago. A

have arisen but I think it was Britain-Ireland could consider

themselves a little bit fortunate, but the Americans dealt with it

very well. I think even did in the end, it is just, it is a silly rule

and I think it, that will be the end of it. It will be swiftly

removed. It has taken this to get this one, Andrew? This is a US

Amateur re-match because he beat Jordan Spieth, and he has this putt.

good few have. Healthy looks crowds. Nathan Smith to win the hole, this

match. Uihlein seems to be closing it out. Again, the wind has dropped

a little bit. This morning those were fluttering more vigorously.

casual water. It, obviously, isn't worrying him very much at all.

see Jack whip one by the hole. It's a difficult stage at this match,

doing anything foolish it soon slips away. This is the top match,

this has got to go in. Yes, left to right Peter, this is a must make

as if he's going to lose this hole to a par. That is one of the

Cardinal sins of golf at this level, more, particularly, I suppose in

four ball in particular. This is to Peter was saying, there couldn't

make enough pars on this back nine. Pars have been good enough to win

holes, very difficult. Left-of- centre here for Peter for a three

5. -- Britain-Ireland 5. I wonder whether that will be costly, or

not? Come on, Jack, this for a half. seem to be slipping away on this

home ward nine. Not elementary mistakes, miskues and errors and

untidy golf really.. Did I get a glimpse of the sun I think that was

someone taking photos with a flash Ken. If you want a haing in weather

hang round for tn -- ten minutes. Up the hill at the 11th. Certainly

they are missing putt after putt at usual times, ken. Still a lot of

golf to go before we shut up shop for tonight but it could look

differently at close of play. Thank man Russell Henley. He was one down,

he is now all square. Suddenly there is a bit of a surge from the

US. So suddenly the picture is changing, Tom Lewis has had

something of a reprise there, but is still two down, only two to play,

best he can manage a half. Jack elevated tee. Back down into a

right to left breeze. Two holes to go. Can he control the flight of

day I think, or in an afternoon. Maybe even the last hour. Well,

to come down. There are three levels. So he has three steps to

come down and the pin on this, the narrowest part of the green. It

bouncing and then skipping maybe down on to the middle tyre with a

bit of spin and just rolling down the last step wards the hole. --

The direction was good, just a bit, it sounded as if he got it a little

Disappointment for Tom Lewis. Played some nice shots but too many

rag dishots in the middle. Peter Uihlein was steady more than

spectacular. Point for the USA. on the back from Jim Holtgrieve,

a great kid and unbelievable player. I knew I would have a tough match.

I played pretty solid I felt like, and we both kind of scrapped and

clawed out there, but it was so difficult with the wind, and I was

fortunate enough to come out on top. Have you ever played in a match

before when pars have been good enough to win holes? Seemed par was

good enough today? I have been a party to a few matches like that.

It was, same in the morning, you make pars out there, it was the

same as this afternoon, the wind was different. It was tough to hit

certain shots with that wind. It was a lot of fun. An unusual

feeling for you in Walker Cup matches to lose this morning. Great

come back this afternoon, how does that feel? No, I mean, you I know

that was Miss First loss, I guess, so, but no, I was trying to put

some points on the board and put a statement match out there and hope

pli the guys will see I got it done, hopefully Speith pulls it out and

sudden, Ken, I don't know what it is. Suddenly they are missing putts

that were knocked in simply this They don't know who is going to

play who. I always find it interesting when you get say, the

two best players playing against each other, and you wonder whether

or not you are going to do, set them up a different way. Well done!

their favour, they need to get some points on the board of the final

five or six matches out on the course. That is how it stands. See

how close it is. After a dozen matches out on the course. Well, it

is almost, well, it is in the goodbye favour -- favourite at the

moment -- favour at the moment. Match three, Andy Sullivan was

storming along, suddenly it is all until the Galleries move from in

front of the 16th green. He has 133 yards to go and the ball is well

below his feet, as you can see. Needs telescopic arms for this one.

more yielding greens, they play it it? Slightly on a down slope, wet

deep, and hardly get it out, or skin it. He's well back. All sorts

of trouble in front of him. Awkward shot for Patrick Rodgers. He is

trying to make the green. The ball is Nestling in the soggy sand. He

knows he has to take a risk. He is one down, playing the 15. A

shortage iron. Can I get it over? If I strike it correctly I'll find

the green. A little heavy and he Rhys Pugh. That sounded like a nice

clean hit. Three down at one time. He look as good prospect, Ken?

appease. Andy Sullivan, up at the 16th, match all square. A little

chip and a run. Oh, that was a skinny one. I don't know what

happened there. Surely, it's not going to go in the bunker. Amiscue.

It might have been lying down a bit, but that was not one to be

Great Britain-Ireland. If this leaderboard goes away. They could

be three or four matches behind. Those last matches could all go

America's way, or 90% of them could. You don't want to get untidy golf

now, unnecessary losses. Now is the time for concentration. All

away. They can have a deep psychological impression on you.

Make a depression thinking, I should have done this, I should

have done that. In the early Ryder Cup matches I played we always used

the close matches. If we were struggle, America always nicked

more than their fair share. In recent years Europe have managed to

nick the matches. It's a question of controlling your emotions. Once

you can play the game it's about how you can think and how you

control your thoughts. He has given that a good clutter. Another one

gone. USA wins the hole for four four. USA is one up. Big, long,

long putt for Rodgers. Pretty darn well. Good speed. What a wonderful

judgement of pace. APPLAUSE

square, no, no, no. One of those happened to me, exact lickly like

that years ago. I couldn't really understand it at all. It turned out

I wasn't aiming in the right direction. It wasn't as complicated

as I thought. Anybody can do it a second time. A wonderfully silly

game, glorious game. The Americans are creeping closer, three matches

are still all square. Young Pugh is still one up. Sullivan, he was

roarin go-ahead at one time, but Harrish English has pulled him back.

Much can happen over the last couple of holes. We'll go down to

the 17th. This hole is playing fully 20 yards shorter than this

morning. It's 170 yards. Harrish English has his nose in front, for

the first time, against Andy Sullivan. One of the challenges

here is that the tee, believe it or not, is shelt from the cross

breezes. Flag short on the green well defended by those front four

bunkers. This is a seven-iron. We have witnessed great ball striking

from the American. It's been a joy It's a tricky pitch, you make your

opponent thinks he's on the green. Now, he's in the bunker, I'll find

the green. The way that hopped in that could easy plug in that soggy

par, and he's made it. They really are - They hold putts, couldn't

don't they, at the crucial times? That is a big putt to hold at that

stage of the match. This for a half. Oh, no. And, we miss. United States

five, Great Britain-Ireland six, Great Britain-Ireland one up. Still

one up. Don't go away down hearted slumping your shoulders thinking,

"I'm still one up, I made a mistake, left breeze. It's, certainly,

turning. Oh, he's over done it. That's an awkward chip, again, Ken,

with that bank, swinging down left to the hole. He at least found the

bit lucky there. Just crept over. He thinks that's on the green,

fairly close, but it ain't. Match Not bad at all. These last few

holes, the last hour or so, is going to prove very tense, either

way. Somebody's going to go home unhappy. It could even be Steven.

The Americans seem to be on a roll Brown and Henley. All square, Byrne

and Smith. See how close it all is. Kuyt one up on Kelly Kraft. Stewart,

Cantlay, all square. Jack Senior, obviously, unsettled I think by

that lunchtime incident. Good choice of club here by Sullivan, I

thought it was going to race by at one time. It's still further away

than it looks, maybe seven or eight feet. His opponent is in the sand.

bushes. Rhys Pugh, there you are, the ball is clear of the bushes.

This reminds me of Jack Nichols. Remember he put it on the front of

the green and Watson was close. This time, he might get some

prickles in him. Peter, you are wondering what the lie is like,

it's plugged here. This one should skip out, once it lands. It may

have a bit of run behind it. There is a bank behind them. Yes it's the

bank in front of him that is more of a bother. That's well played. It

might roll back, you see, no, it didn't. If he went further the ball

might have rolled back a bit more. Pretty good effort, staby bunker

shot. Now, who can hold a putt when it's most needed. Touch-and-go who

is first, out comes the ref. Both will be keen to go. Calling in the

referee. Up to 13, Ken. Kraft verses Kuyt. This is Kelly Kraft. A

played a beauty. Oh, modern technology. It's yours by about two

feet. Sullivan's is the easer of the two. It's up hill, to the right.

The other is not quite so straight- forward. One of these moments,

isn't it, that could change the whole complexion of the match.

Sullivan currently one down, he's on the 17th green. This is for his

English finishes the stronger, and very important win there for United

should say. He made a few mistakes. The other fellow made a putt and

they are shake hands. Well played Harris English. The man who has won

a fro forensic examinational tournament as an amateur. So it is

three in the bag for the United States and suddenly, in the overall

match score, 4-3 the USA leads. They need 13 points if they are to

retain the Walker Cup, and they would do so for the fourth time in

a row. Four in a row they are looking forward to. Rhys Pugh is

still holding steady, and the last Playing -- Paul Cutler. Playing

against craft craft. Too bad for pace. One up at the moment. The man

from Port Stewart. Let us get down to another daughter of Northern

Ireland, Maureen. Raise I am here with Harris English. You were three

down after ten holes and your opponent puts his tee shot stone

dead. Things weren't looking too Rosie then. I was playing well all

day. Andy had four under. He was playing well. I was playing well. I

mean, I was probably oner der after ten holes and I was playing well. I

had to keep doing my thing. I got some stuff going my way and the

putt at the 11 got some Mohamed tum going. It was a great match and

Andy is a great player. It was fun. That putt at the 11th was

outrageous. All humps and hollows, did you see a line to it? I did a

bit. He had nit there two feet and gave me a birdie so I knew I had to

make it. Hit a great putt and it went in. It was the longest have

hit in a while. Congratulations, a high calibre performance. I am glad

to be here. Appreciate it. Quickly to Rhys Pugh and he has done it

well. Wins the hole against Patrick Rodgers. Listen to the noise.

Rightly so too, that was a very good putt from the young fellow,

and that could be most important at the end of the day. Because these

last few matches, they could go either way. He has a cushion now.

Two the play. He is going to win half a point at worst, but look at

the other, all are all square. They could lose or whip all those. And

suddenly, from all the elition this morning -- elation this morning,

things could change, but you never know. Could go our way as well,

equally as well. But the Americans were on a bit of a roll. They have

their supporters galloping round the course. Telling people "You can

do it." Let's go out to one of those matches in the balance. The

final match Michael Stewart. He has had a few short putts missing so

Cantlay asking him to knock this against a very good player in

Patrick Cantlay. He has got to keep his head, keep his nerve. Let us

get out to the match involving Rhys Pugh and Rogers. Pugh, the youngest

man, the young Welshman on Patrick Rodgers, and... Take enough club

and go down the right of the flag, might be lucky. He might be lucky.

He is. He is nestleed between the two bunkers, not the easiest of

chip shots but it could have been worse. Two up two to play. Only

is just 18. This is very much a young man's game. Pugh, 17, this

will play 170 this afternoonful you can see the flag down in the bottom

level. This green goes up in steps. A beautiful par three. That is the

S deuce. Let us go to the 15th. Steven Brown. Elegant swinger from

Wentworth. Playing against Russell Henley. This match all square, and

hmm. He may need something stronger than that, son, I don't know where

to be a punchy one. It maidges it that little bit more difficult. But

I don't know where GB and Ireland are. That is not him stuck on the

three matches. James Byrne has just gone one up on Nathan Smith. Here

is a crucial little shot. It looks relatively simple but it has a bump

in front of him. A little pitch and run Maureen? It is. It is 17-year-

old nerves can play that. I would have had the putter out. That is a

decent effort. A bit of a bold pitch. He might have played it

nearer the ground but he is eight feet past. His opponent is in the

bunker the other side. Yes, Patrick Rodgers's golf ball jumped out of

the imprint, so it is lying well. It is a delicate one this. Just

really has to get this on to the green, an the contours will feed it

down to the hole. Coming left to right. But certainly there is a

slightly open door here for the American. Interesting red sand.

Whether that is because it is wet, or whether it is a special sand

from the... This neck of the woods. He has played a very good shot

Brown. His ball Appiah Kubi peered there. We saw it coming under the

camera so this his third, playing young man. Well done indeed. So at

the moment, the scores are level. On rushes the captain. He nearly

excitement. I must say. Even if they are taking sixes and sevens,

it is still exciting. That was a good, they played very good from

the young fella. That is a terrific win from Rhys Pugh. He is a lovely

young man. He has his family up here. Half of bales, I think has

travelled up. The captain said although he was young and Kuwait,

he was a very tough nut to crack. And so it has proved today in that

match against Rodgers, coming from three down to win two and one. It

is all square, in three. One up for Great Britain and Ireland in the

last of the remaining matches. Who last of the remaining matches. Who

will pre-- prevail? How was that? It was fabulous match. You know, he

was five undeafter five, which... It was fabulous, it was fabulous

golf. But I come back in the end, just stayed patient, and... Top of

the world stuff isn't it. Stuff of dreams. It was like playing in a

dream. Best shot, what was the shot of the day for you? You were down

early on, weren't you? Probably the 13th. That was probably the turning

point, going one. It was a nifty tree at the last to finish it off.

absolutely even, because at the moment, just the one there, James

side you are on. He is a beautiful putter for Great Britain-Ireland.

James Byrne, one up. James Byrne, he played that shot, he spung it

nicely. I wouldn't past him to hole reckon, Andrew? Subtlety to the

greens here. Yeah. It looks fairly flat, but they make you second

guess. A lot of these putts are left of right off centre. Hello,

what doo-doo we have here? Someone from somewhere. He's nicked a coat

pushed, pushed, pushed it. That would have given him a nice cushion.

Peter, but the dampness, the wet of the sand that has given it that

colour at the moment. This ball is much nearer the face, isn't it?

haven't seen anyone go down the last today, so far. This isn't a

push over either. This is not a has a lot of brother in it. Yeah,

nasty one. Played a good tee shot but he just went 20 feet too far.

Well, things have changed dramatically in the last 45 minutes

or so ch it was slipping away from the home side, when suddenly they

have recovered, and it looks very much as if we are going to end this

really is a test of courage, and desire, nerves and particularly

when you think about the young men, very few of them have been in this

situation before under television scrutiny and they are watching

people on the telly, and representing your country, it is a

very new experience, and they are learning a lot about themselves and

their level of desire, and their ability to cope under pressure.
