to father the Spanish, but even you could not have envisaged what went

on in the first game? No, you can't. It would have been embarrassing

after that result, it sent shock waves through everyone who watched

the game. To be honest with you, you don't become winners without

becoming fighters, that is why I am interested to watch the game. These

guys have been through a lot and they have won a lot, and they will

be wanting to show that they are not finished. They will have been

waiting until this time, and they would have been thinking I want the

game, to get it out of your system. You can only do it by playing and

winning the next game. Do you think it could work as a wake-up call in

many ways? That is the way to put it. A great wake-up call. We can

imagine a great game with them today. I think they are great

champions, they did it the eight years and they are definitely going

to react. It is a team that has shown in many moments that they can

come back strong. I expect that today also. It won't be easy for

them, Chile are a tough side. It is going to be difficult. I think Chile

must be happy to play Spain, because you saw them playing against

Australia and struggling because Australia plays more direct. I can

see this group finishing six, six, zero, zero. Double group. They have

to respond. Do you expect them to? -- devil group. I expect so. The

other two teams in the group met, as Holland took on Australia in an

bit of character to come from behind, a slightly dodgy penalty

decision against Holland. Yes, I did not agree with that but Holland

showed they could do both. They got into the game, they noticed it is a

different game, you have to react, you have to respond mid-game. They

did that by hook or by crook, but these type of tournaments you have

to be able to kind of find a way and that eventually found a way. When

you have quality players like Robin van Persie and Robben, you will

always be in with a chance. The iconic Maracana Stadium is the venue

for the night's game. Welcome to an incredibly noisy Maracana. It looks

fantastic. I know Neil Lennon is very excited about watching a game

here and what a venue for such a high-pressure match between Spain

and Chile. It is a magnificent venue, almost the spiritual home of

football alongside Wembley. Of alleged to be here. We are all

looking our lips in anticipation to see which way this game will go.

Huge pressure on the world champions to win this game of football. Take

We are all used to Spain selecting this moment of giving the ball to

dropped. Whoever thought we would hear those words? Silva keeps his

place. Up front, he get another chance, but can Spain adapt their

style to get the best out of him? We will see. Rio, the Spanish defence

was all over the shop. To be honest with you, you have to work as a care

in the central defence. In this game, they didn't. Pique is not a

bad position but Ramos and the Jordi Alba have to get alongside him. They

have to cover if the ball goes behind him. Ramos, another day, when

you are not dealing with world-class strikers, you might have taken a

touch and taken the ball of Robin van Persie. But world-class, puts it

in the back of the net straightaway. This one here, they transfer the

ball from right to left. Pique has to be pulling Ramos across the

helped him. Ramos has seen it but not smell the danger. Get across and

work as a pair. The ball was worked out left, what a ball it is, first

time in the Robben. If Ramos is over there he does not have that space to

go into. He is jogging, he reacts, it is too late, ball is in the back

of the net. World-class players you are playing with, there is no time

to react and make up the mistakes positionally. But they have got to

talk. Ramos is the most experienced ad of the two defenders in the back

four, and he has to be the one dictating to the other, "you come

alongside me, work with me and keep a clean sheet". If they do that,

they have a chance of winning the game. As for the other end of the

pitch, they have stuck with Costa, do you think he fits? He didn't in

the first game, although he created the penalty combat that have to give

him a chance. -- the penalty, but you have to give him a chance. You

saw that he struggled a bit in some parts of the game in the first game,

but it is not only down to him. I want to see how Pedro is going to

play. I know how great he can be and that will definitely help Costa.

Talking about Costa, it is quite interesting that Brazil seem to lack

an out and out striker. I agree with you. Brazil have needed someone like

him. And also the Spanish way of playing is so different to what

Atletico Madrid have done. If they want to use his skills, they need to

play with more direct balls. It is tough to change something that has

been so successful? We have to remember that Spain, every time they

can get a vertical ball, they will do it. When they get slower and all

horizontal balls, just wide and just wide, that is what kills them. So

more balls direct to the strikers, so they can make the game happen.

Chile have won a number of admirers already. Tim Vickery has the

lowdown. Any guide should carry the following

warning: When Chile are playing, don't blink, you might miss

already beaten it! Nothing like a sense of perspective(!) Dirt from

the mine has been scattered on Chile's training pitch here in

Brazil. The team are out at the Maracana. This is the side they have

selected tonight. In goal, Claudio Bravo edges closer

to the all-time Chilean record. Alexis Sanchez is the man the

Spanish team no well. He plays alongside the quick and direct

Vargas. Thierry, Alexis Sanchez had a decent season at Barcelona, but in

the Chile team, he is crucial to them?

THIERRY HENRY: He is the man. You can see the confidence that he has

when he plays for Chile. It is different when he plays for

Barcelona. As I'm aware of, when you play on the wing, you have to be by

the line and it is not always easy. He is one of the men in Barcelona.

But there is THE man. Not to rub it in, that is what you need to make

Rooney feel like and then he will deliver. That is very important. As

a striker, when you feel everybody loves you and wants you to do well,

and expects you to do well, you take charge and you take control. Look at

the turn, look at the pass. Vision and everything is amazing. I suppose

as well, Rio, with Spain struggling at the back, he could cause them

real problems, they will be worried? RIO FERDINAND: At Barcelona, when

anyone gets the ball there, especially in it will final third,

the first thought is Messi. You see the frustration in Barcelona when

that happens. Here, everyone's first thought is to get the ball to

Sanchez. He is a threat, a complete threat. They have a unique style of

playing, Chile? Unique style, South America. Unpredictable and a lot of

speed. First, that is really nice to see. Sanchez, as you are saying, is

the biggest threat for them, especially with his speed. Ramos not

closing down, they have to have a close eye on him. One interesting

story that has come through about a few supporters trying to get in the

ground. The stadium staff struggled to deal with the serious failure of

security measures before this game. Dozens of Chile fans without tickets

broke through a fence and charged into the stadium via the main press

centre. A number of the intruders were detained by officials, but

others appear to have made their way into the stands after breaking down

that temporary wall. The things people will do to see a game of

football(!) If they didn't let me in the Maracana the other day, I would

have followed suit! That is crazy. The security should be higher than

that. They want to get to a football game. This could be a defining

moment for the whole Spanish success story, couldn't it? Is it the end of

an era? Can they keep it going? It is always going to end one day.

Whether they lose in the final, semifinal, or they win this one,

they will lose at one point. I guess it is more the way they lost against

Holland that left people a bit kind of weird about how the game was. All

credit to Holland. For me, we have so much respect for that team and it

was going to stop one day. Some people are having a go at them. We

have to thank them. They have given us eight great years of football and

changed the way of a lot of approaches of coaches, so it is

normal that things go down at a certain moment. It is a pity it

would have been the way it started. Have teams worked out a way to

nullify Spain's style of football? I don't know. You could say that, on

one hand. On the other hand, maybe the volume of top quality games that

these players have played maybe has taken its toll. You have young

coaches now, youth team coaches that have taken on this tiki-taka style

of football and they have revolutionised the game. Also,

Spanish football was hugely successful in European football this

season, so it doesn't necessarily mean it is going wrong? That is

something that people don't take into consideration. Xavi, Iniesta -

I'm not going to name all the squad - they go all the way every year

with Real Madrid, with Barcelona, they fighting for the league. I have

been in that position. After seven years of competing in every single

competition, your body is telling you one season, you are going to

have to take a break. Sometimes you can pay for your own success,

Clarence? You can, absolutely. I agree. The Spanish guys, for years

have been on the top. For me, we will see a better Spanish side

today. Two teams are in the tunnel. Will they bounce back, Thierry? I

have been wrong since the beginning of the tournament! We all have! I

will call it after the game! I'm going to go for Spain 2-1. They will

score a couple of goals late on. That is what we like! Not on the

fence! Spain all the way. A lot of goals today. 3-1. I will go Spain

SIMON BROTHERTON: This game looked good when the draw was made last

December and it is even more anticipated now. An iconic arena

awaits. The big question on everyone's lips - was it just a very

bad day at the office for Spain last Friday or the beginning of the end

for the defending champions at this World Cup? One thing we do know - if

Chile win tonight, Spain are out. The Maracana doesn't hold too many

happy memories for this group of Spanish players. They were beaten

3-0 here last summer in the Confederations Cup Final by the

hosts, Brazil. The majority of the red shirts in the crowd are worn by

supporters of Chile. SIMON BROTHERTON: Can they bounce

back from their thrashing at the hands of the Dutch?

line from Cardiff City. Bringing up the rear, Alexis Sanchez, their star

man. Vicente del Bosque makes two changes to the side from the first

game. Iker Casillas keeps his place in game, but Gerard Pique and Xavi

are both left out with Javi Martinez playing alongside Sergio Ramos in

central defence and Pedro coming in to add attacking thrust. It is the

first time Xavi has been left out since the final group game of the

2008 Euros. Diego Costa leads the attack once more.

Both sides captained by their respective goalkeepers. The man in

the middle today is Mark Geiger from the United States. It is his second

game in five days. He took charge of Colombia's win over Greece on

Saturday. Chile's coach Jorge Sampaoli makes

one change. Arturo Vidal and Alexis Sanchez are their two world-class

players. Jorge Valdivia makes way. He scored in the first game.

as ever in yesterday's media briefing, accepting the criticism

from the first game, and saying he does not disagree with it either.

Jorge Sampaoli. The Chile coach. So many options of the highest quality

the Spain if required the Spain. Chile's substitute list includes

Here we go then, for the second group match for these two sides, for

what could be a memorable game. Chile always go for it and Spain at

studio to hear? We were stuck in traffic, then we were stuck in the

left and I started to worry that you would do it on your own but I am

here now and really happy. Here's Alexis Sanchez spraying it to

Eugenio Mena. He loves to get forward. Fidel into the penalty area

and almost a deflection. Not far away from an own goal in the first

minute of the game. It was a Eduardo Vargas in the thick of the penalty

area for Chile. Martinez got his feet tangled up. A little bit of

luck for Chile but a nervous start for the Spanish. Chile started

quickly against Australia in their first match, they were 2-0 up inside

14 minutes. Sanchez with the corner, and the header wide of the goal.

Fast start from Chile, this time the header from Gonzalo Jara. Really

good start. Exactly what we said, Chile on the front foot, looking to

attack Spain. The clearance was not the greatest

from Iker Casillas. He conceded those five goals the other day,

first touch for Costa upfront the Spain, playing in his native

Brazil, and getting it in the EEA from many in the crowd, just as he

did in the first game -- getting it in the ear. Dias, who is a key

component in the chilly side, Marcelo Diaz. He dictates much of

the tempo of the play. Azpilicueta of Chelsea, could not quite keep it

in. It is interesting how high the Spanish are. The back four players

are pushing up high, trying to play much higher than they did in the

opening stages against the Dutch. Maybe they're in tent is to start

well as well. -- their intent. I am fascinated by David Silva playing

that role. I would like to see more goals from him. He does not score

enough from me. Silva was dropped and hardly appeared en route to

Spain lifting the trophy last time. That was Pedro getting back. Again,

I don't know if you saw Martinez and Pedro clashing, a lack of

communication. Holding his head. It is a worrying position in the side

for Spain at the moment, they don't seem to be able to find a pair who

can work together. Pique was one of those back in Spain heavily

criticised after the first match. Javi Martinez, the Bayern Munich

player, who has not had such a happy season under Pep Guardiola. He does

not really like the role that Guardiola wants him to play for the

club side this -- these days. Pedro, and David Silva. Very quickly

surrounded by white shirted players. Away by Vidal.

He had some surgery on his knee just a month ago, he managed an hour

against Australia. If Chile are going to do well in this World Cup,

they could do with the being at something like his best. Alexis

Sanchez is seeing a good deal of the ball here in the early stages of

this game. Here's Silva, the player who has come into the team. It is a

bold formation from Chile. The Dow is bombing on early to join up with

the strikers. -- Vidal is warming on. It is the first time they have

been drawn together in the group stages of the finals. Spain also won

2-0 back in the Maracana the last time Brazil hosted the World Cup,

back in 1950. A player who will be very familiar to those in the

Spanish side there, Alexis Sanchez, from Barcelona. I am pleased to see

Pedro starting tonight, that seems to be the general consensus. He adds

some pace and athleticism to the Spanish attack. I am surprised he

does not start more games for Barcelona as well. He needs to get

more end product into his game, as well.

Sanchez. Not much room to work in but he will be happy to settle for

the throw. Given the way the David Silva. Diego Costa ahead of him.

First touch for Iniesta, he was looking for Pedro, surging through

the centre. Medel. Diaz who just sits in front of those defenders.

Away by Silva. Eduardo Vargas will chase, but it is easy for Iker

Casillas. A lot of focus on him after the

first match and those five goals, but no surprise, I think, that del

Bosque stuck with him. Yes, I think you sometimes need that from your

manager, showing some faith. There is a myth about and ageing Spanish

side, there are only two players in the side over 30. It is the same

with the chilly side, they have no players apart from the goalkeeper

over 30 in the first 11 tonight. Iniesta trying to get away from

Diaz, but he can't. The iGas. -- Vargas. A little lay-off from Diego

Costa. Silva has got Jordi Alba outside him.

WHISTLE Iniesta fouled under the referee's

knows. -- under his nose. There is a lot of talk about the Chilean

formation. I am just looking at Vargas, he seems to be pulling out

left, which means Mena is a bit deeper. It is a bit unbalanced but

it allows them to bomb on a bit more. We will see how that develops

about the course of the first half. A real opportunity for Spain to put

the ball into the heart of the chilly penalty area. Busquets up for

this one, Sergio Ramos going for the header. We have seen him score a

fewer over the seasons will stop big goals. Including in the Champions

League final. You look around the Chilean side, there is not much

height. We talked about it earlier, from set plays Spain will have to

look at it as a real avenue. They still have more power in the air

above the stadium. Tidy control from Pedro. Not such a good ball through

could have been a different game. That is why I am not in complete

agreement with people writing off Spain, because of one horrible

result where the goalkeeper had a nightmare. They have to respond

tonight, and shut the critics up, because they have some big players

in how to deal with the big occasion. -- and they know how to

deal with. Good play by Sanchez initially,

hustling and bustling, a powerful figure. Ramos. Martinez.

Azpilicueta. This is better from Spain, moving it

around well, David Silva was looking for cost. -- for cost. They are

pressing again, both teams pressing. Given away by Vargas. Pedro, Silva,

coming in and making the foul was Arturo Vidal. I think it is a foul.

Trying to help his team out. Fantastic tempo in the early stages

of the game. A real work ethic from both sides to win that ball back

high art. -- high up. With the set play, what we have

talked about, a good delivery is important, use that extra height.

Well, they certainly have the players more than capable of a good

delivery. There is one of them. Xabi Alonso with the kick. Too long for

Ramos. That is two now, that is unlike him. Brilliant technician.

Usually a very good set play taker, he will be disappointed with

himself. The first hint of frustration from del Bosque. If the

ball is anywhere near the back post on a set play, he will be loitering

and waiting, Sergio Ramos. Diaz, here comes Spain now, it is

with Diego Costa, years looking to set himself up here! Just behind

David Silva, Iniesta will keep it in -- he is looking to set himself up.

DANNY MURPHY: This is just after the Costa chance. I thought Costa could

have taken the shot early. This one - yeah...

SIMON BROTHERTON: Claudio Bravo receiving some treatment for an

injury to his forearm. Prior to this, Diego Costa, when he broke

away, he got the ball and he dummied to shoot three, four, five times and

he took himself wide and then snatched at it. It doesn't look like

he's quite got the sharpness. He finished the season with that

injury. He had the two false starts at the end of the season, Simeone

was desperate to include him, the Atletico Madrid coach. Maybe Del

Bosque would have changed it. He might prove us wrong. We will see.

Fernando Torres did the media conference at the stadium yesterday

with Iniesta, so a number of the Spanish press were wondering whether

that meant that he might start the game. A bit of kidology from del

Bosque, to keep the Chileans guessing.

Mauricio Isla is a bit-part player for his club side. Isla is always in

the Chile team. They tell me they nickname him "Forrest Gump" because

of his running ability. We will keep an eye on him! Iniesta beaten to it

as well. What a season Azpilicueta has had

with Chelsea, mostly at left-back, of course, with Jordi Alba occupying

that role for Spain at the moment. No chances taken there by Casillas.

That is not a bad idea from Chile to play a few long balls in behind for

Sanchez to chase. We know that the two central defenders for Spain

aren't as quick as him. So drop a few in behind. It doesn't always

have to be perfect football. Silva is looking for Sanchez. Isla

will continue the run, but won't quite get there. When they were

playing out of the back, the two wing-backs are so high, they are

nearly playing five men up against the Spanish back four. It's a gung

ho type of formation and attitude, which is brave. It will be

interesting to see how long it takes for the Spanish to take advantage of

that. It really is a cavalier approach playing that high up when

they are in possession on the halfway line. It does leave them

vulnerable at times. Diego Costa getting his head to that one.

Vidal is a focal point of the Chile line-up.

Didn't fall to Ramos, the interception by Alexis Sanchez.

Could open up here. It is in towards Vargas. He is away from Casillas and

Chile strike first! Superb play. Expertly dispatched into the back of

the net by Eduardo Vargas! Listen to the roar inside the Maracana.

It's a brilliant move, but it is sloppy play from Xabi Alonso. A

short ball, intercepted, a lovely pass inside, good feet here, clever

pass and to have the awareness to find Vargas. I think it was - I

can't quite see who it was. But a calm finish from Vargas. Superb goal

and it was created by Aranguiz. Yes. Usually, as a midfield player - and

I can tell you from experience - you snatch at a chance. They haven't

been in the box that much. To have the awareness to see Vargas. It is a

great goal, but it is sloppy play again. The two best chances we have

seen from either side have been when they have lost possession in their

own third, defensive third. There is a cracking atmosphere inside this

stadium. And a real intensity to the game. But there was some true

composure there from Chile. Game on! A reminder, if you have just tuned

in, if Chile win this game, Spain will go out of the World Cup. They

will not be able to qualify. No matter what happens in their final

match against Australia. I think I am going to stop predicting results.

I don't think I have got one right. A long way to go yet. Just a little

way short of the mid-way point of the first half. Should have followed

Thierry's method - wait till after the match!

Spain are rather on the ropes here. They are far from out of it. Ramos.

Closed down quickly by Eugenio Mena. What is fascinating to see from so

high up, as soon as you have a cross-field pass, one of them goes

and they all follow. It is a deliberate ploy, but it is really

effective and credit to the manager for working on it for so long and

getting that mentality into the players.

We haven't seen much of him either so far, Iniesta.

This is where the big players need to come to the fore, the best

Spanish players, demand the ball, get on it and make things happen.

We have reached the mid-way point of the first half. Here is Azpilicueta.

Almost caught in possession by Vargas, the goalscorer.

Iniesta, who scored the only goal of the final four years ago. What a war

of attrition that was. Here's Iniesta now. Into Diego Costa.

Looking to turn. Back to Xabi Alonso. Again, it seems - I'm

certainly not picking on Xabi Alonso - he is technically a brilliant

footballer and he's skied that one. It was more than a half chance.

Here's the goal again. What a touch that was from Eduardo Vargas, never

mind the finish. It was. If you think of the enormity of the

occasion, it is very easy for people to snatch at chances and this is

like a home game. The Chilean support - this is probably the best

I have seen so far. To have that awareness, to take that touch, that

is what good goalscorers do. They always look like they have time in

the box. A great start for Chile. Jorge Sampaoli, their coach, on the

edge of the touchline. He will be very happy with what he has seen

from his team so far. Silva was complaining that he had his shirt

pulled. Nothing doing from referee Mark Geiger.

A bit of a chase for Jordi Alba. Xabi Alonso dispossessed once more.

Chile fancy this. They are almost getting some encouragement from the

way Spain are playing at times. It will be Spain's ball. Sanchez

complains. Not quite sure why(!) Now, this is

Pedro. Sprinting for all his worth. And just nudged out of the way. I

don't think that is a free-kick either. Ramos was shielding the ball

out, just previously to that, that was fine - and I think this is OK,

too. Just gets his body there - ooh, maybe not! That is a free-kick.

Maybe the way he reacted and went down... It is the first big game

Spain have played in a long while without that man in the midfield. I

find it strange. OK, there are so many options for them. He would be

still, for me, the one in there that makes things tick. Ahead of Alonso

and Busquets. I am a Xavi fan, so maybe I'm biased. Tiki-taka is his

trademark. One goal in the game. A yellow card for Arturo Vidal. That

is his first of the tournament. That's better. Ultimately fouled.

The foul was by Marcelo Diaz and there is an urgency by Spain here.

David Silva in towards Diego Costa. A chance. It was a good chance. Good

move from Spain, much better, much more urgency. Alonso wins the ball

back there. Jara has got back in to put him off

a little bit. But he should at least hit the target. He's a bit off it,

for me. Which is understandable with the injuries he's had. Why is he

starting a second game in five days if he is not fit? Not quite at his

sharpest. Tidy play there. The urgency is a huge factor for Spain.

They are criticised a lot for the slowness of the build-up. Now they

are 1-0 down, they have to play a much higher tempo, to get back into

the game. That was the first time they did that and they created a

good chance. They are playing a decent side here, Spain. Chile did

well to beat England at Wembley. They were unlucky to lose 1-0 to

Germany in March as well. A strong and competitive team. What

is going to be fascinating is the work ethic we talk about and the

closing down. Can they keep up that level of commitment and pressing

throughout the 90 minutes? I find it hard to believe, but people tell me

they can do it. The Spanish will keep playing and keep passing and

keep finding those pockets. Pedro is going to leave this one to

Cesar Azpilicueta. Making just his eighth appearance for the national

side today. Iniesta appearing on this near side for the first time.

Silva. Iniesta. Comfortably dealt with by Diaz helping out the

backline. It is I of the needle stuff for

Spain. They are dropping back really deep when they are defending. They

are playing really narrow and saying you have to go around the outside of

Oscar Ouma closing up the spaces, stopping the Spanish playing

through. Really impressive defending so far.

Met by the head of Xabi Alonso. This is Pedro. Blocked off, strong play

by Gonzalo Jara. The decision goes against Chile,

despite the protestations. The referee was suddenly well-placed.

Chile have to be careful, overplaying in their own half and

the Spanish winning it back. There is not too much in that, for me, but

the reason they conceded a free kick is because they overplay debit. When

they all -- they overplayed a bit. Here we go with another set play.

Bravo, the Real Sociedad goalkeeper, in goal for Chile

tonight, he might have something to do here. It was poor again. Not a

good delivery. Medel not happy in the centre, after that challenge

from Ramos. Now it will be Chile's ball. What is strange, when you are

standing over a free kick, and are used to take them in that position,

the Chilean line was so high in the 18-yard line it was crying out for a

right footer to hit it into that space. As it happened, a left footer

took it so it doesn't matter, but I was surprised. Inside the last 15

minutes of the first half. Spain needs something from this game to

give themselves a chance of progressing to the last 16. If they

lose, they can't go through. Jordi Alba. Another player who likes to

get forward, but he hasn't really had much chance to do that. A touch

from Silva. Unlucky. The through ball aimed

towards Diego Costa, comfortable lead dealt with by Claudio Bravo.

Not much for those Spanish supporters to cheer about so far. A

long way to go, though. That is the dowel, the attacking

midfielder, pressing the goalkeeper when they are 1-0 up, it is a

fantastic attitude -- that is Vidal. Vidal is actually pushing up high.

The two strikers are splitting and at times they are playing three out

and out up there, with the wingbacks high as well. It is what I talked

about earlier, the bravery to play that way. He is a strong attacking

player in Serie A, Arturo Vidal, for Juventus, up into double figures for

goals for the second time running for Juventus. He actually got 18

goals, which for a midfielder is fantastic, and he also deserves

credit for getting himself fit after a miniscule sneeze surgery in early

May. So his desire to be here and get fit, from that. He played the

first hour of the opening match and was visibly unhappy with being

substituted. He apologised to his team-mates after that. We have all

been there. Nobody likes to be substituted, especially in a World

Cup. Have you ever kicked a water bottle on your way out? I did once,

it cost me a lot of money, so I did not do it again. It is passion

though, it is good to see players caring. Diaz, he always looks like

he has a little bit of extra time in possession. He took too long there,

but he just plays in an unhurried manner. The referee keen to keep the

game going. Yes, I den think it has been too nasty. It was a silly trip

from Pedro, but nothing more -- I don't think it has been too nasty.

It is a foul, not a yellow card, it is just a trip. What is painfully

obvious, watching Spain live here for the first time, for me, is that

they lacked pace in the final third. Pedro is the only one, really, who

you would say has that pace to go past people. Iniesta does it in a

more silky way, but Silva and Costa, they don't have the pace to

get in behind, so everything is in front of Chile at the moment. Here

comes Spain with David Silva, Jordi Alba, Diego Costa waits in the

centre, Pedro is in there as well and it is very, very comfortably

dealt with by Barry Medel and away by Francisco Silva. -- Gary Medel.

Ten minutes to go to half-time. Away by Medel. Diego Costa almost

catching Medel's head. I think he just pulled out at the last minute.

Another free kick, this time for the challenge on Arturo Vidal. Yes, it

is a free kick. It is not what Iniesta is known for, his tackling

prowess. I would like to see him more in the game doing what he does

best, going past people and making incisive passes, but he needs

runners. Won in the air by Azpilicueta. Pedro has got pace, can

he get away from Mena? Not this time, he feels he was pushed over,

and, more importantly, so did the referee.

Jorge Sampaoli there, the coach of Chile, has been watching hours and

hours of matched tape in the last few days, since that first game

against Australia, in the build-up to this one. Meticulous preparation.

So far, it is paying off. Indeed. Tactically they have been brilliant,

their work ethic has been good. Tactically spot-on. That will be the

test for them over the 90 minutes, because Spain will keep passing and

pushing. With the power of the bench they have got, they have got

options. Ramos. Iniesta. It was loose there, he was under pressure,

hurried by the intensity of the Chile players. It didn't quite work

this time for Alexis Sanchez. You do become sloppy... Well, it is not

sloppy, the intense pressure from the Chileans create sloppiness. Xabi

Alonso has been guilty as much as anybody, which is a surprise for

him, because that is what he prides himself on. Met by the head of

Gonzalo Jara, latterly of Nottingham Forest in the Championship. Former

West Bromwich Albion player, as well. Jordi Alba was up for that

one, there is a bit of a gap here now, Sergio Ramos will try to fill

it on the far side, as Jordi Alba gets back goal side. Vidal down far

too easily. Busquets. Iniesta. Spain yet to get into their stride.

Chile won't let them. Another example, Vidal loses the ball but

instinct straightaway, sprints back 20 yards. Pedro making the running

to the centre and Diego Costa right underneath that one, but taken by

Claudio Bravo. I would be amazed if we didn't see a couple of changes,

to add a bit more pace and injection from Spain in the second half. Maybe

Koke in for Alonso, Torres for Costa, but they have to try

something, because as you say, if they lose the game they are gone.

You would think if they took Xavi out of the side of which they did,

there might have been a case for playing Koke, because he has linked

up with Costa superbly all season. There was talk of that. It is

difficult when you don't see teams and players in training every day of

course, but Koke is more powerful, more athletic than some of the other

players on the side. Here's Pedro, the mis-control takes it for a goal

kick and that was a measure of his frustration. Yes, but he is trying,

trying to take people on, they just need to get the ball more. He could

do some help from some players. Iniesta, for me, is one of the best

players in the world, but we haven't really seen him causing too many

problems. And David Silva, you watch him to Man City, he is probing,

getting people in, getting on the ball more. That is credit to Chile

as well, they really are harassing and playing at a fantastic tempo to

stop the Spanish players. WHISTLE Hefty challenge there by having

Alonso on Mauricio Isla. That his frustration. That will be a yellow

card from the referee. Into the last five minutes of the first half here.

That was frustration from Alonso. It is naughty, actually. It is naughty.

He has been frustrated, because his quality has not been up to the usual

superb level. His set plays have not been particularly good, he has been

caught in possession a few times and that really sums up his car. That is

a bad tackle, it is naughty. A different referee on a different day

might have pulled out a different card. -- that really sums up his

half. I am surprised, I expected so much more from the Spanish players,

considering what happened against the Dutch. WHISTLE

Away by Ramos. Chile with a throw on here, on the front foot for the last

few minutes of this first half. Impeccable preparation from the

Chilean coach ahead of this game, so far, bearing fruit, but just the one

goal in the game so far, so Spain still very much in it, of course.

What is a worry, of course, is that a draw would mean Chile going into

the Holland game meaning as long as they did not lose by the huge number

the Spaniards did, they would go through. So it is not just about

getting back into it for Spain, it is about trying to turn the game on

its head and winning it, and that is why I am thinking maybe something

different should happen at half-time. Away across the field

from Gonzalo Jara, here they come now with Alexis Sanchez. A little

trip. The referee trying to play advantage there, but realising there

was none. Xabi Alonso again. Not a great spot to concede a free kick,

either. No. Quick feet from Sanchez, tries to stay on his feet, to be

fair to him. Alonso has just got to be careful. Maybe del Bosque might

be the king of a change, but the fact that he needs to keep 11 on the

page, because there is one thing with this Chilean side, if you go

down to ten, you are in trouble. -- 11 on the pitch. Now, what can Chile

conjure up here? WHISTLE

Alexis Sanchez, who plays his football in Spain with Barcelona

goes the goal, punched clear, back in, 2-0! And Spain are in a big, big

hole now! Casillas again... Arturo Vidal! 2-0 down, with half-time on

the horizon! Are the world champions going out in the group stage? Del

Bosque's team have a lot to do. That is crazy from Casillas. I would have

caught that. Aranguiz with the shot. Let's take nothing away from the

finish. It is an average free kick, he should catch that all day. Great

touch from Aranguiz, little toe end, super finish, I have got to

give him all the credit in the world, but Casillas, I don't know

what he is thinking, why he is punching that. If he is going to

budget, he has got to punch it wide anyway. There is not too much pace

on the ball anyway -- if he is going to punch it. I would say I feel

sorry for him if he had not made three mistakes in the Dutch game,

but that is a huge, hugely bad decision from the goalkeeper.

Charles Aranguiz with the shot, eating Iker Casillas as it broke

loose. I don't say that flippantly, it is easy to criticise doorkeepers,

but that is an horrific decision for him to punch that, it really is. --

goalkeepers. SIMON BROTHERTON: They are looking

in disarray here. Eduardo Vargas with Sanchez ahead of him.

Azpilicueta, Pedro. Two minutes of added time.

Sanchez checking the run. Some tired Spanish legs out there. I don't know

whether it is the humidity, the pitch, or just the intensity of the

Chilean players, but some of those Spanish players look tired. It feels

like a bit of everything for Spain at the moment.

Again, Xabi Alonso has given the ball away. Spain have really lost

their way here. Just as they did in the second half against the Dutch.

I have never seen Xabi Alonso - and as I said earlier, I am a huge fan -

I have never seen him give the ball away so many times. And be caught in

possession so often. I don't know whether it is a mental

thing, whether the first ten minutes has affected him. It's got worse for

him as the game has gone on. Now, here is a good chance for the

Spanish to pull one back. The usual suspects inside the penalty area.

Busquets and Ramos joining the attack.

Alonso in and confidently taken by Chile's goalkeeper. Sounds like he

is my enemy - it is another bad ball. It is too high. Someone else

should take responsibility. I have been there myself when you take a

few and you can't get the right trajectory and you are not right on

it. Let someone else go over and take it.

That will do it for the first half. Mark Geiger blows the whistle.

Eduardo Vargas there giving Chile the lead in the 19th minute of the

game and then two minutes before the break, Charles Aranguiz with the

shot into the corner of the net, high past Iker Casillas. Spain are

in big trouble here. If it stays like this, the champions are going

out of the World Cup. They are 45 minutes away from it. Half-time -

Spain 0, Chile 2. GARY LINEKER: Indeed. Day seven of

the World Cup and the defending champions are on the brink. As it

stands, who would have thought it. Spain are going out. Australia will

also be eliminated with a game still to go if it stays like this. Chile

and the Netherlands would battle it out on Monday to try to avoid a

possible second round clash with Brazil. Who would have thought that

Spain could conceivably - it couldn't have ever happened before,

that the defending dham I don't knows could be the first --

champions could be the first team to be out of the competition. We didn't

even manage to do that! We are well on course with our prediction. It is

a nightmare. We are doing well. In a way, we can't be too shocked because

of what happened in the second half against Holland. Nevertheless, this

is a demise that's so rapid? Yes, it is. At the same time, you have to

give credit where it's due. Chile have been fantastic. They have had

people willing to run off the ball, when they have won it back, beyond

people, given defenders problems, questions, and when they have got

into areas, they have had shots and they have looked to make sure they

put the ball past Casillas and today he has had another bad day.

Clarence, you said it was a wake-up call for Spain before the game. It

is still on snooze that alarm. They need to do something now? It all

started wrong in the first minute. Chile almost got a goal already. And

that, of course, every player that has been beaten in the first match

would feel a little bit, a lack of confidence after that. This is after

a few seconds. Already, this pass would have played, was not

pressured, you know, getting into the box, a lot of Spanish defenders

- all good - but it takes away your confidence. You see Alonso here. The

intensity that we were asking for, he comes in, sees the danger, gets

it away. Great job from the midfielder, that is what he is there

to do. Sees the danger and snuff it out. In the goal... A very different

story? He didn't react. He loses the ball and then it is about your

reaction. How do you react? Do you want to get back and win it? Not

necessarily chase the ball. He didn't quite do that. Here you see

him, one of his best parts of his game is his passing, but he gives it

away. It is about your reaction. Do you want to get back in to help your

players? He doesn't have the intensity to do that. Ramos doesn't

look around to see where he is. Then it is too late. I think Alonso, if

he had sprinted back, maybe could have got into the line of the ball

and stopped... It becomes a mental issue. Sometimes you want to, but

you are watching the match. I think one of my colleagues will take the

ball for me. Everybody is thinking that somebody else will take it and

then it is too late. The game passing you by. Great reaction to

the goal. Thierry, we haven't pointed out it was a brilliant bit

of football from Chile to make that goal? Exactly. I understand your

point of view, Rio. Defensive! In terms of beauty, Tim Cahill's goal

is the best so far. This is my type of goal. Great attitude. You see

Vidal, great awareness, gives it to Sanchez, great run from Aranguiz,

and what a finish! For me, that is football at its best. That is what I

like to see in a game. Three difficult passes. But generous and

very quality passes. That sums up for me the Chilean team. Generous

and unselfish. Could have shot there. He could. Someone else would

have gone for glory. He is thinking about the team. Are you talking

about Gary(?) 2-0, just before half-time, that puts Spain bang

under the cosh? You were asking if we were shocked - I am shocked. I

am. Of course. Iker Casillas is one of the best goalkeepers in the

history of the game. You can see he's not confident at the moment.

You wonder why he doesn't catch the ball, or clears it out. Sorry, it

shows you, though, one of the best goalkeepers of all time - doesn't

matter, if you lack confidence, you will make mistakes. Is that why he

punched it? Yes. That was a ball that he should have caught. The way

he punched it. He needs to put it wide. Yes. Do you think it's made -

I suppose in hindsight, it is easy to say del Bosque has made the wrong

decision picking Casillas because he's making mistake after mistake.

He's not been a regular in Real Madrid's team. He's only played in

the Champions League? That is harsh in a way. At the beginning, we are

seeing this - we are going to have to - that's a mistake. We were

saying at the beginning of the game, he looked composed. He played the

ball to the right back and we thought he was confident. Then he

does what he does. He will have to come out and talk about not playing

for a long time. In the final, too, of the Champions League. In the

major games, he has made such important mistakes that you would

wonder why he is still there. Especially when they have decent

goalkeepers in reserve. Pepe Reina is a good goalkeeper? They have some

great goalkeepers. That is a sign of the loyalty of del Bosque, he is

loyal, he's won a lot of things, he is a fantastic goalkeeper. The

loyalty is maybe misjudged a little bit. He has not played a lot of

football. Diego Costa, interesting player for Spain. He doesn't typify

the way they play. They have had to change their style a bit. It is not

really working for them? No, it is not. They don't play for him. You

can see how they work with his style of play. He needs a lot of crosses,

he needs a lot of direct balls so he can have the space and the time. He

is not a very skilled striker, he needs the space, he needs time to

make things happen. Here again, you know, he makes a good run here.

Silva, we have seen him do this so many times with City, give him the

pass, he hesitates a little bit so they close down. Here Spain are

still making good pressure. This was a good phase for Spain. Here, this

moment, look at Costa. Instead, ball back again and this is just... You

can see he is getting frustrated. That reminds me of Thierry!

Frustration. What about this stuttery run? A lot of players make

that look easy when the striker runs at people. He isn't confident. The

ball is bouncing all over the place and he couldn't finish. You were

saying before about the decision - I'm wondering why Busquets and

Alonso are playing together. This is the same type of players - Spain

needs some more depth in their game. Surely they don't need two holding

players in the second half now? For sure. He should score there. The one

before also, you would expect him to score from the way he held the ball.

But, at the same time, I think somebody like Fabregas, who can run

up alongside him and behind him, it allows him to have space. If he is

running behind Costa, the defender also go with Fabregas and he --

defenders will go with Fabregas and he will have more time. We were all

calling for Fabregas, this is his time. It might be too late. They

have to do something. England are back in action tomorrow. They play

their second group game against Uruguay in Sao Paulo and confidence

in the camp remains high according to Roy Hodgson.

In spite of defeat on Saturday, it was a very good England performance.

Will the philosophy stay the same? Absolutely. We have been working

towards this philosophy really and we think we have the players that

can help us carry out that philosophy. I was pleased that they

could go out against a strong Italy team and I thought matched them for

very long periods of the game. It is a defeat and you can't come away

from the fact that defeats are never positive and I believe that we are

ready to go to the next one and we will approach it in the same way as

we approached the Italy game. If the philosophy is going to stay the same

and the personnel, presumably, does that mean where people play will

change? Will Wayne Rooney be your ten? We will see. At the moment, I'm

not prepared to make any comments about the team. I'm not prepared to

say it will be the same team. Since I have been England manager, I have

always refused to discuss what the team is going to be before the

players. The players have always got to be the first to know. I can tell

you at the moment the players do not know what the team is. Wayne Rooney

does not know if he is playing or not playing and he doesn't know in

which position. Do you get fed up talking about Wayne Rooney? No, not

really. I have got great admiration for him. Over the years, I have seen

maybe from afar - this time, I'm seeing it from within the camp. From

afar, I have seen an enormous focus on one man and this year it is

Wayne. The Costa Ria-Uruguay result threw this group wide-open. Did it

change the way you prepared for this match? It is not the type of Uruguay

performance that we are used to and it is not the type of Uruguay

performance that we are preparing for. And also, of course, they will

have their talisman back for this game, Luis Suarez will play in this

game, I'm sure. I don't think we will have to face a tougher task

than we have faced playing Italy. It could be equally as tough. But there

was the added, if you like, handicap that the game against Italy was

played in Manaus. The temperature and the conditions in Sao Paulo will

be a bit kinder to us. 17 degrees and raining, sounds good? Very good.

Sounds like the England I know and love so well!

GARY LINEKER: Good conditions in Sao Paulo for the English players,

Sterling walking in, where will Rooney play tomorrow? There is Roy

Hodgson. Let's get the latest from Gabby.

Thank you, Gary. Conditions here at the stadium are very much more

English than Manaus. It's been 18 or 19 degrees. We have had rain,

sunshine earlier. Everything but snow! The stadium was mired in

controversy, would it be finished in time? Around the outskirts of the

stadium, all the building equipment lies dormant. They will care about

the pitch, the players. They will be on there in half an hour's time.

They flew in this morning. I'm sure these conditions will please them.

You heard Roy say he wants to stick with that philosophy of that high

tempo, energetic, attacking style play that they played with against

Italy. It will be so much easier in these conditions. He wasn't giving

anything away on the team. Wayne Rooney will play ten, we think, and

all the coaches want to see them interchanging. Alex

Oxlade-Chamberlain has been carrying that injury. He's been training this

week. Don't expect him to feature tomorrow. We might have to wait

until Costa Rica. Uruguay, will Luis Suarez play? The signs are that he

will be fit and ready to go. We won't know until tomorrow.

him. They just really have to go for it now, don't they? Yes, they need

somebody to come on and affect people around him. I think Fabregas

does that. He can put the final ball in. This guy, to be fair, he had a

great season last season with Atletico Madrid, and he knows Diego

Costa well. Who he comes on for, we don't quite know yet. It is not

Fabregas, though. Rio made a great point, they are putting someone that

actually knows and plays weak income a week out with Diego Costa, so we

will see. It is a curious one, the whole World Cup, they are changing

their whole style to fit somebody who has been injured for quite a

while. It is not at up to me, Clarence. Very strange, actually,

but everybody needs to take his responsibility. But they are

evolving, they have to evolve. They have won the last three tournaments

and they can't just play with the same players and team consistently,

people work you out. But it is difficult to change. It is difficult

to change at a World Cup. They look more like dissolving van evolving at

the moment. They are about to make that substitution. We have to give

credit to Chile, they are giving a hard time to the Spanish team to

create chances. It looks like they are taking off Alonso. Using two

holding midfielders at 2-0 did not make sense any more. They have to

get the ball into Diego Costa, to be fair to him his movement in the box

has been very good. He has not had the ball fed to him. Spain eager to

get out there, Chile have kept them waiting. Mind games, mind games! But

Koke is not a bad option at all. He is a good player, perhaps because we

knew a bit more about Cesc, but they have gone with a club partnership.

It will be interesting to see if Chile play the same way or if they

sit back and hold. COMMENTATOR: Spain have got a great

deal to do here to avoid suffering the same fate as Italy four years

ago. They were the defending champions in South Africa, and went

out in the group stage. Danny Murphy is alongside me, how do Spain go

about rescuing the situation? Do you think Koke on for Xabi Alonso is a

smart move? It is a good move, he is smart and quick, hopefully can have

a difference for them. They need to move the ball quicker, play with a

higher tempo. They have not got players who can run past people with

great pace and athleticism, so they have to play their way through but

they have to move the ball quicker. Watching the players as they were

waiting to come back out through the tunnel, more on that in a moment.

Azpilicueta up against you Jenny Mena. Here come Chile, not for long

-- Eugenio Mena. David Silva. Looking for Pedro. Having quite a

castle there with Aranguiz, the scorer of the second goal. -- quite

a tussle. There is nothing wrong with that. They just got

dispossessed in their own half again when they were under pressure. They

are winning 2-0, nothing wrong occasionally with giving it a good

old lump, getting up and not conceding chances. They have done

the hard bit, getting in front. The point I was going to make was we

were watching the player just before they came back out for the second

half. I don't know what you felt, Danny, but the body language did not

look great among some of the Spanish team. It did not. Usually you want

to be on your toes, getting yourselves going. Why they were

standing in the tunnel talking, I don't know if that is a FIFA think

they are not allowed out, but you need someone leading, getting them

fired up. Eduardo Vargas now. Vidal, the furthest forward in the

middle. Diaz rather hoping he would get a free kick. Iniesta. Jordi Alba

loves to get forward. He has not had much of a chance to run at the Chile

defence so far. Diego Costa, you would think he

would be happy that his team-mate from the past season, Koke, he is on

the field, they have linked really well, here's Diego Costa now for

Spain and it is smothered by! He has got to score, he has got to score.

This is what I talked about, an incisive pass from Iniesta, this is

what he does. It is a poor touch. He doesn't get it out of his feet, gets

it stuck under his feet. He has got to do better, he just has not looked

sharp all night. That is a brilliant opportunity for him. The referee

spotting an infringement inside the penalty area before the kick came

over. There is nothing wrong with coming back from an injury if you

are not sharp, you can't get sharp without playing matches, but it is a

World Cup. The manager has picked him expecting him to be sharp, and

he is not. It has summed his day up. The fist of Bravo. Back in by Jordi

Alba. It was fizzing across the penalty area. I mean, middle of the

season... This was not the best effort from Jordi Alba. The middle

of the season from Costa, that was the type of chance he was eating up,

Sharp, a good touch, burying chances, week in, week out. He has

looked a shadow of that player this evening. And of course, as a player,

when a manager asks if you are fit and OK, you will say yes, you want

to play. So it is the manager's sponsor bulletin more than anybody

else's. Fernando Torres, -- it is the manager's responsibility.

Torres came on in the first match. Iniesta. Aranguiz, the defensive

player, trying to keep it away from the penalty area. Fed in by Koke. It

is a start though, better tempo, passing has been crisper, more

incisive. Probably the pass of the game actually from Iniesta. That is

what we are used to seeing him doing, cutting teams open.

Easy for Ramos. Jordi Alba. Martinez.

A bit of space here for Koke. Gary Medel saw that one coming. The Chile

wingbacks are not pushing on as high at the moment, they have probably

told them to keep in position a bit more and the closer to the three

centre halves, which is completely understandable, of course, when you

are 2-0 up. And urgency about their play, as you

would expect, given the position they are in. Pedro down, free kick.

Good position from Pedro, coming in of those little pockets off the

line, causing problems. They need to be careful not to be a little too

overenthusiastic just outside their own penalty area, don't say,

Chile's players? Yes, a dangerous position, this. They have been poor

on set plays so far. The point with the wingbacks that I was making, if

they do stay back and dead press as high when Spain have the ball, they

will give up possession, but maybe then mind giving up possession and

keeping their shape when they are winning the game. It will also mean

that they don't have to do the same amount of running, of course.

Iniesta, Ramos and Silva are standing over the ball.

The defence just advancing ahead of the white line momentarily. Now we

are ready, Sergio Ramos! Deciding not to catch that one, and it is

back in, oh, and it is wide! It was a glorious opportunity for Sergio

Busquets! I am starting to think it might not be their night. It is just

not happening for Spain. Again, the keeper causes the problems, a

ridiculous punch. Ridiculous. I think that is Costa with the

overhead kick. I have not got Busquets's goal-scoring record in

front of me, but I am pretty sure it is not very high. They could be back

to 2-2 in the first however many minutes in the second half. They

have started the second half more brightly, as, of course, they need

to do. Trying to build some momentum here, to get back into the match. A

reminder, if they lose, Spain will be out of the World Cup, with one

group match still to play. Great pressing. And here's Alexis Sanchez,

he has got the better of Sergio Ramos, Vidal in the centre. Aranguiz

is up again. A flick in from Vidal. The ball

ultimately breaking loose off Eduardo Vargas. David Silva, a

little bit deeper now. Iniesta. Ten minutes into the second half.

Pedro likes to run, forced back this time. Koke, the substitute. Silva's

touch, Iniesta. Cannot find a way through, and looks for a free kick.

The referee says no. Jordi Alba. Vargas turning straight back into

trouble there. Sergio Ramos almost losing the ball once more to Vidal.

That is what I was talking about, just creating problems in your own

half when you are winning the game, you don't need to try tricks and

Flex. Play sensibly, played percentages, make them work, make

them create chances. Busquets, whose embarrassment at missing that chance

was not helped by the fact they played it on the big screen. I think

it will be playing over in his own head a million times anyway. A minor

break in play, an injury to one of the Chile players.

SIMON BROTHERTON: Aranguiz is on the ground at the moment.

DANNY MURPHY: Not sure there was any malice in that challenge. Maybe he's

tweaked his medial ligament there. I have done that myself in exactly the

same way. Yeah, they are testing it there. You can see the physio with

his left thumb. If it stays like this, how long do you feel that

Vicente del Bosque will leave things as they are? Shortly. Ten more

minutes, maybe. Maybe a David Villa, a Fernando Torres, go two high up.

David Silva is not contributing enough for me. I would always leave

Iniesta on because he is capable of an incisive pass. This is a big

shame for him. He assisted with the first goal and scored the second.

His all-round performance has been superb. If that is a tweaked medial

ligament, he is going to be very lucky to play in the tournament

again. Let's hope it's nothing serious.

It does look as though Chile are going to have to make a change here

shortly. He won't be coming back on.

Normally, when they are not that bad, you try for a little while and

you have to come off anyway. That spray is not going to make any

difference. They are making a change. Yeah.

It's Felipe Gutierrez who will come on in the next minute or two.

Momentarily, Chile are down to ten here.

Charles Aranguiz is going to give it a go. He has got no chance. He

doesn't look terribly comfortable, does he?

Diego Costa will chase and they are waiting for him. Gary Medel.

Iniesta. Under pressure again from Vidal. Vidal has done a lot of that

in the first few minutes of this second half. He has. We have just

over half an hour to go! There he is again. The referee waving play on.

Azpilicueta. Trying to get in past Eugenio Mena. Really strong play

as he has been throughout the game. Every player in that Chilean half

apart from Casillas. The pass was misplaced by Jordi Alba. He is lucky

to get it back. Chile have that line of five again. There's a line of

five every time Spain get in that final third. The wing-backs drop in

and there is a line of five. This is Pedro. Koke once again.

Sanchez stands his ground. There is not one player that they carry. They

are all on the same page. They have all got that same mindset for the

team, for the team, a man's down, I'm filling in. The right-winger has

run past me, I will run back for him. He is the wonder boy. He still

has that mentality which is why Barcelona has spent so much money on

him. He is a team player. Spain are half an hour from being knocked out

of the World Cup with one group match still to play. They have a

free-kick here for that challenge. And Eugenio Mena goes in the

referee's notebook. A clear foul and Spain are having a

lot of the ball here at the moment. What can they do with it?

Sanchez. He is lucky. He will get a free-kick. It didn't look like a

free-kick. It was lucky. Trying to take people on in his own half. Here

comes Torres. I worry for Aranguiz. He is going to make that worse if he

stays on with it. I would imagine Gutierrez has to be

coming on for Aranguiz. He is still stripped and ready to go. There he

Chile. Costa lurking. Eduardo Vargas. He turns away from

Javi Martinez. Oh! Still could be a chance. Sanchez! Spain survive. That

was a great opportunity, a poor final pass. They had men over.

Now, Spain can break. It is Diego Costa and he's closed down so

quickly and dispossessed so easily by Marcelo Diaz. He is physically

not sharp enough for anything to come off.

Fernando Torres is waiting on the touchline to come on.

Koke's touch. There you go again. Closed down by Eduardo Vargas. Chile

are working so hard here. That is exactly what happens, you force

mistakes. Together in little packs, chase down and keep going.

CROWD BOO Diego Costa is off and Fernando

Torres is on. Torres was called up for the World Cup. That is his first

call-up since the confederation cup last summer. Picked ahead of Alvaro

Negredo and Fernando Llorente. Torres is now on. Aranguiz is going

to have to give in to the inevitable and leave the field. Yes, best case

scenario, a week to ten days. Worst case, four to five weeks. In terms

of the World Cup, he has to give himself a chance by coming off now.

Here come Chile again. Iker Casillas was right behind the ball this time.

The shot came in from Vargas. The Torres substitution is a good one.

He's been working on his fitness. He has that pace and power. Gutierrez

is a player who can do something as well. He played under Steve McClaren

and he said he is more than capable of losing the ball three times in a

row and then coming back and doing something brilliant with it. He

doesn't want to be doing that now! He's got to be able to fill in those

gaps. Sit in your position, be disciplined and do the right thing

as a midfield player and just keep working. Keep closing down. Sanchez

looks like he's taken a knock as well.

It is a very hard-working game, the way Chile play. It would be if they

played in the north-east or in Manaus. If they played in the

north-east in a lunch time kick-off in that heat. Yeah, they will be

used to it. A lot of these players play over here, or some of them.

They do look like an extremely fit bunch of lads. As I said earlier,

there is not one outfield player over 30. They have got legs in the

team. They have youth on their side. 25 minutes to go.

Busquets. Missed the best chance of the second half.

Too high for Jordi Alba. Just over 74,000 inside this arena. The vast

majority of whom are travelling to support Chile here.

Given away by Iniesta. Free-kick. A bit untidy, nothing more, the

challenge on Francisco Silva by Torres. They made a very positive

start to the second half, Spain. They did. Chile seem to have ridden

that out. I think you are right. I think what the problem for Spain is

- when they need to press a game, they haven't got enough legs in the

team to go up high and press teams. With the likes of Silva, Iniesta,

Busquets - they haven't got that energy and athleticism to win the

ball high up. They have to persevere with the possession and keep trying

to build-up slowly. When you are 2-0 down, looking like you are going out

of the World Cup, you need something different. Not sure they have got

brilliant legs on the bench. They will have to grind away and make

some chances. Torres. Asking an awful lot of

Pedro, who is always a willing runner.

Ramos underneath this one. Koke. Busquets. The way Spain play, it has

to be inch-perfect and it wasn't there. Alexis Sanchez forward to

Vargas, Vargas has support. Look at the space here. Mena and it's a

stretch and it's over! It was a great chance for Mauricio Isla.

Great breakaway. Should have scored. Game over that would have been.

Vargas, good awareness again. I think it's Mena on the left, he

drags the shot a little bit. Yes, it was. Here come Chile again. It's

cleared away by a tired-looking Javi Martinez. Isla is down. Isla is

holding his right leg. Chile are still in possession with Diaz Diaz.

-- Diaz. That last move sums Chile up. They

win the ball back through pressing the ball, one wing-back mis-hits the

shot and who is the one on the other side of the pitch that nearly

scores? The other wing-back. The energy and the application, honestly

- not sure I have seen a team play with this much courage and... They

are not afraid to roll the dice? No, they are certainly not. Torres

turning away from Diaz, turning straight into the man they call the

pitbull, Gary Medel. Not the most complimentary nickname I have ever

heard! He's always in there, Gary Medel. He is such a vital component

of the Chile team. He has done really well. He's been really

disciplined. Obviously, he's had a checkered history with his

discipline. He's marshalled the other two around him as well. He is

looking at that midfield again - 11 red cards in the last five years in

club football, but none in the Premier League last season. With

Cardiff City. Sergio Busquets. Marcelo Diaz will collect balls like

that all day long. Sanchez - I thought he had shown too much of

that. Vidal is up with him. And the header in the end going wide of the

goal. It was Gutierrez, the substitute. Another good breakaway.

That will happen. The Spanish will keep trying to press now. That was

unlucky from Sanchez. He broke - I think it was Martinez that come

over. He had too much pace for him and then tried to pick out the guy

on the back post. That is the way of the next 20 minutes. It will be the

Spanish trying to push forward and they will leave big, open holes.

Forward by Gutierrez will stop Iniesta's touch, combination with

Torres. And what a noise being made by the Chilean fans now. And there

is a man with plenty on his plate. I hope the people at home can hear

the atmosphere, it is absolutely fantastic. The Chilean fans haven't

stopped, have they? The acoustics in the stadium, as well. Here they come

again. Sanchez. Trying to lead Martinez a merry dance. Medel is in

space. The past not good enough this time. Away by Sergio Ramos. Vidal

has not played like a man who has been injured for a while. He is

playing like the Vidal we were hoping to see. Not just the

technical aspects, but his running, his desire to win the ball back from

the team with a so-called star. Absolutely wonderful. Great team

ethic Sampaoli has got here from this chilly side. Vidal again with

his arm in the air, just waiting inside the D. Ramos able to find his

intended target. Pedro looking for Torres, but it was well dealt with

by Gonzalez. The Spanish body language is tired. Especially the

defenders. -- by Gonzalo Jara. I know the Uruguayans did not get

their caramel spread through customs, I am not sure what the

Chileans are using but I would like some with my breakfast.

I am not surprised they were disappointed not to receive the

delivery. On a serious note, the amount of credit to those players, I

can't stress it too much, what they are actually doing here, playing

this way in this humidity, it is really difficult to do, really,

really difficult. They must have prepared perfectly, and worked

really hard to get to that level. It takes a lot of application. It is

Vargas on the ground. I think we got a little sighting of Santi Cazorla

who may be coming on. We can't see him down in front of us at the

moment, but... I think Ramos has been a little bit clever there, left

his studs up just as it came down. A bit naughty, lucky to get away with

that, actually. Vargas is fine. Here is Marcelo Diaz. Vargas. He leaves

it to Alexis Sanchez, he has got the pace to get away from Ramos here, he

has got support, it is from Vidal... Oh! Still Spain haven't got it away,

they have now. You wonder whether they were quite close to conceding a

penalty there. I hate to say it, if he goes down, he gets it. David

Silva. Iniesta. Santi Cazorla is waiting to come on. He is going to

have to wait a little bit longer. We might have another stoppage here.

Don't kick the ball out, you are too -0 down in a World Cup group stage,

is playacting! Ridiculous! -- you are 2-0 down. Gonzalo Jara was

pretty badly on his -- pretty quickly on his feet. Definitely not

a penalty, was it? Nobody touched him. Maybe not. At least he tried to

stay up, I will give him credit. Here comes the change for Spain. The

Arsenal man waiting to come on, and Pedro, who was brought into the team

today. It has not been his best game ever but one thing you can be sure

of is that he has given his all. He has tried to make things happen, he

has tried to run behind. Well, has all gave Arsenal the chance in the

FA Cup final when they were 2-0 down against Hull City. Yes, and he takes

a brilliant free kick, as well. They need something soon. Cazorla, who

missed out four years ago through injury, gets the chance now, but he

has only got just under quarter of an hour to try to make an on this

one. Iniesta with the quick kick, flag up far side anyway. Good idea.

That is what has been lacking, some quick thinking, inventiveness. It

has all been a bit predictable, a bit lethargic, although if Costa's

touch was better, we could be talking about eight different

result. But overall they have been poor. They have not played with the

same zip and zest that we have been so used to -- talking about a

different result. Now it is looking like it is too late for them. Vidal

on the ground over on the far side, but he is off the pitch.

Sanchez losing out, it was Jordi Alba who won the ball back for

Spain, now it is with David Silva. Santi Cazorla, into Koke, Iniesta.

Good feet. Recovered well, after that initial first touch. Sliding in

and getting the ball away, Mena. It is that line of five again. You see

the four in the box and the left-back going over for the throw

in. They have really kept a good shape, those lads.

If Spain could get a goal in the not too distant future, it really would

set us up for a grand slam finish. Yes, because if a team get a goal,

you tend to drop off, you can't go the other end and score again. It

happens every time we see a team get one. Martinez. Now Casillas. He has

just played the cup matches for Real Madrid this season, only a couple of

matches in the league. David Silva, Torres. Well, Brazil with Julio

Cesar as well, he only played with Toronto at the end of the season, he

spent a lot of time at QPR not playing. It is the classic argument,

do you play players who have done well in the team in the past, or

teams who -- players who have played well in the season? Argentina's

keeper has not played much this season either. It has been an

impressive showing here from Jorge Sampaoli's side. Apart from the

first eight or ten minutes... Not impressive there, though, here comes

David Silva, Torres is up with him, Iniesta. And it doesn't fall to

Torres, and again it fizzles out. Yes, I was just saying, apart from

the opening eight to ten minutes of the second-half, where Spain played

with a bit more zip and urgency and had those chances, the rest of the

game has been... Not easy for Chile, because they have worked hard, but

they have not been put under great pressure. The long ball from Ramos.

Azpilicueta. Cazorla. Here's Iniesta. Is there a little bit of

magic in the box from him, Cazorla! Good save. Pushed behind thereby

Bravo. They won't mind that, if they keep them shooting outside the box

for the last ten minutes. How long have we got now? Ten minutes

exactly, plus added time. Spain are going to have to dig really deep

here to try and rescue this situation they are in, in it comes

towards that near post area. David Silva was there. Behind for another

corner. I haven't seen David Silva score too many headers in my time!

But Sergio Ramos certainly is a threat. In it comes once more, and

this time Claudio Bravo elects to catch the ball. And he does so with

great confidence, and I am sure he is OK.

But of course it breaks up the rhythm of the game, which I'm sure

Chile will be more than happy with. Well, it is clever. There is the

first goal from Vargas, looks pretty good no matter have a times you see

it. It was cool, and that was invented, stuck under his feet, 80

end. -- a toe end. We have seen quite a bit of head scratching from

Vicente del Bosque tonight. Well, he is going to come he is so used to

seeing them playing so well and dominating games and making chances,

but they have just been too many poor performances, and the blend of

the team hasn't looked quite right. He has obviously got to take some

blame for that, cause he has chosen the players, but I think I would

like to have seen a little more fight. Maybe they just haven't got

the legs, maybe they haven't got the energy in the team they need now.

And actually this Chilean team is as good as it gets with athleticism and

their work ethic, so they have been overrun. Talking quite exciting

South American sides, our next live game from the World Cup will be

at 10:35pm also on BBC1, Japan playing Greece, that game in Natal.

spot. He has done well, the rest. We haven't talked about him well -- he

has done well, the referee. He has got a second match tonight, before

Howard Webb has had his first at this World Cup. Fernando Torres,

away by Marcelo Diaz. It didn't quite fall for Vidal. DGC

the reaction when he lost that ball, though? Again, and he is a striker,

Vargas. You could argue that he might let one go for once, but no,

straightaway, give it away, get straight back at it. Chile will make

one last change in the next few moments, when the ball goes out of

played Iniesta looks a goal! Fine save by

Claudio Bravo. -- looks for goal. This is a really good effort. And a

very good save. Iniesta has had his three best moments in central areas

of the pitch. And he started the game wide. I think there was talk

before the game of playing him in that central role, and I think he

has got that bit more creativity when he comes in no central areas.

They have missed that, well, they certainly missed it in the first

half. Vargas, who scored with such aplomb in the 19th minute, being

carried along by the referee. He deserves his over Asian. I am glad

he wore those orange boots stash macro he deserves his ovation. Jorge

Valdivia replaces him. He was unlucky not to start. Lavishly

gifted player, but he has something of a bad boy reputation. Yes, I

think he has served a couple of ten match bans in his time. Certainly a

talent, though. Five minutes and counting. And, as

it stands, the defending champions will be going home early.

They have just lacked that spark, or inspiration, to their play. They

have had moments. It is hard, it is really hard when you are up against

a side that has more power than you, and more pace than you.

SIMON BROTHERTON: Won back by David Silva, Koke dispossessed. Falls to

Iniesta. Brilliant feet in towards Torres.

DANNY MURPHY: I did worry when I looked at - I have watched Medel in

midfield this year and when I saw him playing defensively, I did

worry, but he has been terrific. He's read things. He's been calm in

possession. He seems to be speaking, dictating what he wants from the

other defenders and deserves a mention. I did - I spoke with Neil

Lennon before the game, we were looking at that as a weak area. He

has been one of the best players on the pitch.

That will be Spain's ball. There will be another change, shortly, for

Chile. Won in the air by Torres. And also by David Silva. Torres down and

he gets a free-kick. Good foul. Really good foul. It is not a

sending off because he had some cover. That late on in the game,

winning 2-0, take a yellow card. That is not a bad foul at all. His

manager won't mind that. Late change now being made by Sampaoli once

again. Just before this free-kick is taken. There will be a standing

ovation for Arturo Vidal as he leaves the field.

He has been outstanding. We are better looking at the players who

haven't been because there have not been many. Talk about a team

performance. And Carlos Carmona is on for the remainder of this match,

a defensive midfield player. It is Santi Cazorla for Spain and Bravo

was there once more. Not a bad effort. There wasn't enough pace in

it. I was going to say "now or never" before he took this. There

wasn't enough pace in that. Not quite enough fizz in the

free-kick to get it past Claudio Bravo. No. Silva again. And

corners again - just watching Chile there - they didn't put anyone on

the post even though they are winning 2-0. They probably do the

same thing whether they are winning 2-0 or losing 2-0 on corners. Most

teams do the same thing. I believe when you are winning a game,

especially defending corners, you have to have people on the post.
