USA v Portugal Match of the Day Live

Good evening. If Portugal are to progress in this World Cup they need

their superstar to produce a performance against the USA that is

out of this world. Team America is in orbit and it is

OK! The United States are up 2-1 in the opening game of the World Cup.

Congratulations Team America, the whole world is watching.

the USA beat Ghana 2-1. Victory would put the side through to the

surprise you? It did not surprise me. Anyone could have won that game.

We could have won 3-1 going into it. Happy and relieved. The second half

out-played us, every exception, apart from Cameron was excellent.

We were really backs to the wall. It was 60-40% possession. 20 shots to

our eight. It really was one winner, I thought and it would be Ghana

after they equalised. We came up. Brooks, an unliky scorer. -- unliky

scorer. A great result.

We are looking at Ronaldo this evening. It didn't quite happen for

him in the first game, I mean lots of the big star at this World Cup

have turned up. It should be his turn now. He'll be driven to be the

best player in this tournament. He will think, I want to be the best

player, best goal scorer. He's not in the best team in this World Cup

in Portugal. Things have not reel gone for them. -- really gone for

-- Messi and Suarez. I watched. A lot of people said he struggled. I

thought some of the runs were terrific.

The second round of games in Group H were played earlier today. Here is

Ronaldo! Turning an historic team victory

into a photo counter. With all his gifts, humility has rarely been

listed. He's opened a museum in his own honour. It is not all about you,

his critics cry, except every two years, it really is. No player of

the currented age carries a team -- current age, carries a team as

Ronaldo carries Portugal. The importance of having a player like

him - it is huge. We all know it, including most importantly his own

team-mates. It is a privilege having him in our

team. A privilege to work with him. We are playing the best footballer

in the world. He is an example for all of us. It

is difficult to sympathise with the modern footballer superstar. It is

impossible to illing nor that he was born out of step with the rest of

his nation. They had their own golden generation. One worthy of the

name - Costa from the edge of Europe they lit up the continent and nearly

conquered it. He enjoyed only the dying days of his guilded era and

then there was him. He has shown his country a World Cup

semi-final. In the time of Spain no-one came closer to Topuskoling --

topping them. He's the reason Portugal are even here at all.

Going to explain how important he is for the Portuguese team. What he did

in the final game, to get to the World Cup is fantastic. That is why

I am so sorry for him. The world's Footballer of the Year cannot be

everywhere. Having dragged his team to Brazil, six days ago he watched

from the half-way line, stranded, half stricken with a problems. His

doctor said further damage here will end his career. The Portuguese deny

this. Either way, he's in no condition to hold that roof up on

his own, but that is what he'll do. Sympathy? No. Perhaps an

understanding, it is not always a blessing when it is all about you.

It often is all about him. He's obviously got an ego and stuff. He's

got a good side. A very generous guy, I understand. A wonderful

footballer who works hard. You know him well. It is no coincidence - the

skill you see on the field is not just natural, that is how he is on

the training ground. As a team-mate you don't mind because he keeps

producing. I think his team-mates let him down. They need to take more

responsibility in the passes and what they do on the pitch. One of

the best I played against. I played against Maradonna. He is a

class apart. Left foot, right foot. Strong, like runs so quickly. But

also scores any type of goal and the pace, allied to the movement and the

trickery is so hard to combat. Again, we are going to show clips

that the range of motions went from frustration to anger to despair, but

you watch him here. We pick him up here. He's thinking about making the

run. This run is timed to perfection.

problem. I think that is why he gets

frustrated. He doesn't get that pass through. I am watching some of those

clips, some of our weaknesses, when I say the United States is the pace

on the turn. If he tries to expose those paces,

if someone can claim the ball, the US will be in trouble. The other

thing about Ronaldo there is he never stopped running. He kept on

going and going and going. It is a tribute to him.

side he's selected tonight. Nani, a player you know well. On one

day you see him and he's brilliant, another he's hopeless. Nani has

speed, strength. He's got skill. It's pulling it all together in one

against an opponent and they have more fans than you having your home

Brazil, playing on these different stadiums and you have home-field

advantage, it shows how far the game has come in the Cup states. Here is

better than your home-grown players they should play. The US passport is

no problem. The bit -- the big talking point is Timothy Chandler, a

lot of people thought Michael Parkhurst was better. Chandler finds

himself on the bench, so that is more of the talking point. You have

five Germans. Five Germans, seven with dual nationality. At least you

have penalty takers should you get to the knockout stage. What about

Portugal? We have talked about Rinaldo. They have to come together.

Absolutely, they have to pick themselves up as a team. Rinaldo

individually, but the team collectively. They have to give the

service. We were talking about superstars in world football. He is

a genuine superstar. It is all about him tonight. If he produces then I

think Portugal can win this game. Puts an enormous amount of pressure

on him but it is a pressure he is accustomed to, I am sure. It is a

pressure he wants, he loves it. It makes him better. It is up to people

like Moutinho, Veloso, to step up to the plate and take the pressure off.

They have plenty of experience in the American side, the front two in

particular. A lot of things start with Michael Bradley, defensively

and offensively. He is an important player. A big miss for us is

Altidore, we don't have what you would consider another number nine

in the squad. Dempsey will give 100% effort, always does, and great that

Besler is in, for me. Rinaldo, this is his time. We will find out

shortly. Which team do you think will be affected worse? It is 31

degrees now. I think it will suit the USA better. I think they will be

more used to it. The conditions in America are more suited to it. I

fancy the USA tonight. The heat will not affect the Americans one bit. In

the United States in the summertime it is very hot and humid are not an

issue with the conditions. You and I, Gary, are going for Portugal

may have heard, have met once before in the World Cup. The USA winning

the group Game 3-212 years ago and despite facing three group games in

the north, the US still basing themselves in Sao Paulo. Juergen

Klinsmann reshuffling his line-up tonight, but making only one change

to the side that beat Ghana 2-1. Altidore is out after suffering a

hamstring injury. Zusi comes in on the left of a five-man midfield,

with Clint Dempsey leading the attack. He broke his nose against

Ghana the other night. Besler went off as a precaution during the last

game. But his hamstring is fine and he plays, keeping John Brooks on the

bench. Nestor Pitana takes charge of his

second match at this World Cup, after the 1-1 draw between Russia

and South Korea last Tuesday. Cristiano Ronaldo there, nothing

like his best in that first match against Germany. Playing like

throughout the day but a few clouds appearing over on the far side of

the stadium. I wonder whether there might be a thunderstorm in the air

Dempsey with that goal, in 29 seconds.

Bruno Alves also picked up a knock in the opening game.

very quickly through the central midfield players, all having a bite

at the ball. Their players are going to be more familiar with playing in

calamity, the major blow for us, is the fact that we feel that we were

so close. The young players were so close to reaching that and getting

that confidence. , they like the rest of us, the more experienced

ones, have to suffer the fact we have failed. If you hadn't hit where

you wanted to be the midway point, what makes you confident the next

two years will be any different? We have a body of players that have

burst burst onto the scene quite late and our work with them is in an

embryonic stage. What makes me confident for the next two years is

this group of players have shown their commitment and desire, the

fact they really want to play for England, they want to do well for

England, and how bitterly disappointed we all are that it

didn't go better for us. What decision are you most disappointed

about that you have made with regard to what has happened on the field of

play? That is a good question. I mean, there is nothing major in

terms of personnel. Perhaps maybe this player could have done a

the way we have approached the games, I don't know there is so much

there I would necessarily change because in both the games we have

only been in it and had chances of winning the games. Philip, would you

more players and more games. I myself got on the Liverpool side at

22 just because there were -- they didn't have anybody else. It helps

me, playing with great players. If you get five or six games and get

the experience of playing is great players, it definitely helps you and

your progress. We have to develop those players in the first place,

they have to be good enough to force clubs not to go and buy foreigners?

I think we have the players but some are not getting the chances that 19

or 20. They are waiting till 23. Some of the players in this squad

are not regulars. They need to be. Do you see the talent in the youth

set-ups? Do you see the talent in the youth

have a tremendous amount of talent. I like Sturridge and Sterling and

Barkley want Walker and Oxlade-Chamberlain and Henderson. A

lot of it is small margins, but they have

to get continual playing time. When Tim took over at our club he brought

in a couple from the youth ranks and more of that has to happen across

the board in the Premier League. What we have seen in this

tournament, superstars change matches. Whilst they have got a

great crop of young kids coming through I can't see one

superstar there. Let's hope that is not true. Sterling has something.

Barkley possibly. Talking of superstars, we look forward to

seeing Ronaldo in the second half. It is worth watching this game, it
