Good evening. He's had to wait a while but tonight Cristiano Ronaldo

takes centre stage as Portugal face Iceland in Saint-Etienne.

# #. There he is, Cristiano Ronaldo, the

biggest star in European football, his 127 cap for Portugal tonight,

equalling Figo's record. Runner-up in 2004 and three times losing the

semifinal, they are looking to their talisman to delete them to a winning

tie. An historic night for Iceland, playing their first ever game in a

major tournament with a population with a little more than 300,000,

about the same size as Leicester. Theirs is one of the most romantic

stories of this summer's competition. Here in the studio are

Alan Shearer, Thierry Henry and Vincent Kompany. Let's get it over

with, not a great night last night for Belgium? No, not a great night.

Many disappointed faces in Belgium, but we played against a strong team.

Probably we expected to be better than what we showed. But I still

want to remain positive, we still have two more games and if we win

those we will be fine and then we would avoid Germany in the

quarterfinals . Ronaldo, always the biggest star

and everyone wants to talk about, what a player. Amazing. He has taken

goal-scoring to another level. I remember, even now if you get 20

goals a season that you are regarded as a very good player. For the last

five seasons he has had over 50 goals, outrageous, usability and

goal-scoring record. A phenomenal footballer. A great start and one

people want to watch matches, a great attraction tonight. Even when

he doesn't plan it he manages to arrive last on the scene at Euro. It

seems, everyone is going to watch the games night, but let's put it

this way, Alan... If you combine our goals in one season, does that

basically every season. That's amazing. What's he like to play

against, Vincent? It's as hard as he makes it seem by explaining it. He

is a phenomenon. You don't come across many players like this. I

feel fortunate I have been able to play against him many times, but he

is something special. Every single time you think, is he going to be

able to deliver again? He does it every time. Portugal qualify quite

well, they lost last 's time to Spain in the quarterfinals.

Cristiano Ronaldo was waiting to take a penalty and didn't get to

take it. He quite likes the sense of glory. Do you think?! What I think

about Ronaldo is, when you say to a young kid all the time, work and you

never know what will happen, you have a guy like Messi, who is a

talented guy. That guy is all about working, work ethic commie wants to

work and be the best every single time and he does it all the time,

like Vincent said. Is not just Ronaldo but Portugal and Iceland.

What an achievement for Iceland to get here, that tiny population. A

tough time with their economy and they have some very good players.

They are not here to have a holiday. You said about their population,

about 300,000. For them to be here is phenomenal. They will be

dangerous. A lot of their goals from set pieces, 17 goals in set pieces.

They will be dangerous from that. They will give Portugal a run for

their money tonight. More on this match shortly, but first, let's

bring you up-to-date with the fallout from the trouble in

Marseille. You said today Russia will be disqualified from Euro and

is 16 of their fans cause problems in the remaining matches.

Disqualification will only apply if there crowd disturbances inside the

stadium is. They have also been fined following disturbances in the

match against England in Marseille. The other match today with Austria

against Hungary, where they were watched by Jonathan Pearce.

Hungary will be stubborn opponents. Katich right from the start. David

Alaba hits the post! One of the favourites to be the player of the

tournament, David Alaba of Bayern Munich explodes into action.

Szalai, who has had an absolute stinker, scored his first

international goal since October 2014 and his first goal anywhere

there is by Dragovic. I think that is a second yellow. It is. Dragovic

was booked in the first half, and goes.

Get setback, gets the shot away. Right foot swept away and it was a

good save by the goalkeeper. Sweeps it away. Here's a chance the

number two. Stieber, the substitute, what a brilliant finish, what a cool

finish to create the biggest upset we have had so far. They have

exposed Austria and cut through their ten man opponents. They have

landed such a famous victory, international victory. A few people

fancied Austria as dark horses. Hungary, a surprise result. A bit of

a surprise. I have to be honest, I was travelling as I was travelling,

but I was listening to the result. You don't expect it. This is

interesting, Szalai's goal. This is his first goal in 41 matches, yet he

got a starting place, quite remarkably. I love the fact he kept

it simple, that is what you want to do. Great control across the

defender and a great finish. I suppose you are entitled to the

Brunei that if you have not scored for 41 matches. Do you think it was

that much of a surprise? They only conceded five in qualifying. In the

group was Russia and Sweden and we have seen them already. They weren't

that great. That was a brilliant finish as well, wasn't it? A good

start for the Hungarian is. Let's take a look at the teams for

tonight. Portugal, Patricio is starting his third tournament as the

number one goalkeeper. He conceded just five times in eight qualifying

matches. Carvalho is the oldest outfield player in the competition.

Guerreiro has graduated from the U21. Porto's Danilo has impressed

since last year and will sit deep to protect the back four. Moutinho

pulls the strings in a narrow midfield with support from Joao

Mario and Gomes. Ronaldo scored twice in Portugal's last friendly,

in an Nani Adi forward players but both have licence to roam. As for

Iceland, Halldorsson directed films before turning professional two

years ago. He directed the film for Iceland's Eurovision entry in 2012.

The midfield includes Charlton's Gudmundsson. Cardiff's Gunnarson and

Swansea's Sigurdsson. What do you make of that? LAUGHTER

Brilliant. On that note, we'll move on. For such a small nation

Iceland's qualification is just short of miraculous but it has come

about as a result of some careful planning.

Iceland's otherworldly beauty and solitude is often thought to contain

magical properties. But the eruption in form of the national football

team is no trick. He winds of change have been blowing here for some

time. When I was young we were in the

winter time running on the streets, on the gravel cost up you cannot do

any practical, technical training in these conditions. We made a study in

the early 90s, our friends in the Nordic had started building and we

made a project. It is a revolution for football here. Almost every

player now is technically much better than we had in the past.

You can see from this, this is why the football houses are so

important. You have to be tough to have grown up in these conditions

playing football. Is there any concerns the new generation might

not be as tough? I think the kids need to train outside and feel they

have do come to difficulties also. The best young Icelandic talent will

escape this environment. European scouts sign the top teenagers often

before they have played a first-team match. The league here is

semiprofessional but the standard of training is high. The FA implemented

a system guaranteeing all age groups receive Uefa standard coaching.

When I was playing, we didn't know which shooter put on each leg. We

knew how to run and kick people. But today most of the players who are

carrying the team are technical players. Gylfi Sigurdsson,

Bjarnason, and they are further up the pitch. The national team is

co-managed by Swedish coach Lars Lagerback and Heimir Hallgrimsson.

I'm a dentist by profession, football has aways been my love but

you cannot live being a football coach in Iceland. It is a good

combination. How is your relationship with Lars Lagerback?

One good cop and one bad cop? I think we are two good cops. I don't

think there is a situation on or off the pitch he hasn't seen before.

Just a game away from going to Brazil, the pessimist in Iceland

said we are so close, we will never be so close again, but the boys knew

the only thing we could do was go to the finals in France. It is driven

so many kids to add that little extra. Night after night and week

after week, in the winter time when it is snow and horrible weather, to

try and exceed expectations in a sense, because that is what Iceland

has done in the football world. Success is not a destination, it is

a continuous journey in the right direction. How will it feel in the

stadium, watching Iceland coming out of the tunnel? I will be over proud!

Great story, Thierry, and it just shows, if you invest in youth and

get an infrastructure, you will have a chance, however difficult

conditions. Actually, I don't even know how they made it. It is like

bringing a town to the Euros, that's what it is. It is sheer desire and

commitment. Well done to them. Having the guys with the quality

they have got, with Sigurdsson and Sigthorsson, it is just mind

blowing. Well done to them. I have got some decent players, Vincent,

and they will be very well-organised, as we have seen in

the qualifying coverage yes, they will be very well-organised. I am

walking on the tip of my toes when I say this, but how important is

Sigurdsson to them? Can we draw the analogy with Ronaldo and Portugal?

This guy, what he has done for Iceland, for his country. Today

we'll have a "On the game, if he plays well. If he does so, it might

go their way. He is box to box, athletic, tall, scores free kicks.

Played in every game in qualifying. This is a brilliant finish, the

technique, into the roof of the net. He is obviously a big player for

these guys. This was brilliant, the technique and the touch, to put it

the other side of the goalkeeper. . He will do this, he will go and get

the ball. This time, left foot, little bit of luck. So we have seen

right foot, left foot, and this is what he is good at. He will drive

into the space, as I said, box to box. He has got a lot to offer. If

Iceland are going to progress, then they will need this guy. I mentioned

at the top of the programme, set pieces for Iceland - big, big part

of their game. 17 goals scored in qualifying, over half of them, set

pieces. And he plays a huge part in that. And you quite like Sigthorsson

up front as well? I do, because not a lot of people know about him. He

did well at Ajax, and then he went to France, to Nantes. I think he can

cause a lot of harm to the defence of Portugal. It was a funny game

against France, friendly game, and he was outstanding against us.

Portugal boasts arguably the world's finest player, certainly in his own

mind. But can Cristiano Ronaldo inspire his country to win a first

title? Dan Walker reports. Right, he is here, the championships may

begin. Do you think he would enjoy the big build-up? Yes. The ego has

landed? A bit harsh, maybe. A heightened sense of self-worth is

perhaps understandable. In the film of his life released last year,

during a moment of quiet contemplation, Ronaldo lamented that

Portugal did not have two or three more hims. No doubt, just driven.

Genius can sometimes flower on stony ground, be it Belfast, Cardiff or

Madeira. These singular talents are destined always to be the first pick

in the international playground. And inevitably, it is they who always

decide when it is home time. None of which recruits him from the debate

over the globe's greatest. Such squabbles are nothing new. The sort

of rift that only the balm of a global marketing camp Rankin heel.

-- campaign can heal. So, a couple of others are worthy of mentioning

in the same breath, but for Portugal, it is all about him. Club

football offers a relief from the burden, although it seems even here,

in the land of the Gallic echoes, he stands alone. Inside the locker room

of Real Madrid, you cannot find any Ronaldo friends. Ronaldo is like a

republic. I watched them when they won it the other day. They were all

celebrating, family and friends on the pitch, and he stood back. I was

trying to work out, is he just looking back to take it or in or is

he just trying to stand out from the crowd? I think he is of that age and

which are ready that he just wanted to breathe it all in. For Madrid, he

takes penalty number five, with all the glory that brings. Last time for

Portugal, being number five meant the party had already ended before

he walked up. As for those two or three other hims that Portugal need,

William Carvalho, Renato Sanches and company will have to do. Ronaldo was

too late for Portugal's last golden generation. He may well be too early

for the next one. Timing is everything noble he is one of those,

as a person he divides opinion, because of this super confidence.

But as a footballer, the world knows that just phenomenal. I spoke to Sir

Alex Ferguson about him six or seven months ago, and he said, he is the

best professional. Just the best person he has ever seen workrate,

best person for drive and mentality. I look that him and thought, of all

the players you have managed and met, he is the very best. To say

that, just fantastic. Can't achieve what he has achieved without having

an unbelievable attitude. Yes, you have got the ability but you have to

have a great attitude and stay out the top when you get there. You must

have unbelievable drive. You mentioned about the stats for

Ronaldo, and they really are quite astonishing. In fact they are

ridiculous. They are, as I said, he has taken goal-scoring to a new

level. Look at that, takes it with his left and smashes it in from 25

yards. The touch is just unbelievable. He is just world-class

in everything he does, whether that is hitting it from 25 yards or doing

this - heading ability we know about... Right place, which could

time. These were from each of the last three European Championships.

2004, he can become the first player to score in four European

Championships. The brim ethic did not do that last night. As I said,

his attitude is just there for everyone to admire. -- Ibrahimovic

did not do that last night. Left foot, right foot, headers, he is

great at everything. Shaking your head? No, because those guys are not

human, Messi and him. But still those two guys are still fighting to

make the national team win something. But you have to give him

his respect - is not human, stop it now! I have been lucky to play

against Messi, it was only a friendly. But these top strikers,

that split second before they take a shot, it goes so fast. You can

adjust your feet but you just can't stick your leg out there. Portugal

and Iceland are the last two teams to participate in Euro 2016. We can

euros under way meet in St Etienne. It has been raining again here

today, but the sunshine has come out in the early evening, just as it did

yesterday's in Lyon. So, Portugal, who have actually lost at home to

Albania and the Cape Verde Islands in the last two years, without

Ricardo Quaresma, who is injured. Up front, Nani partners Ronaldo. On the

bench, 18-year-old Renato Sanches, who has just signed for Bayern

Munich for a fee which could rise to ?61 million. Cuneyt Cakir, from

Turkey, is the referee. One of Uefa's finest. Although not without

the odd blemish on his record, as Manchester United fans might tell

you. The captain on the right, Aron Gunnarsson. Don't forget that

Iceland almost qualified for the last World Cup, only losing in the

play-off to Croatia. This time they have done it. The team plays for

clubs scattered across northern Europe. The two strikers play for

Nantes and Kaiserslautern respectively. At the back, Kari

Arnason captained Malmo in a Champions League match where they

lost eight-0. Guess who scored four of them?!

Hopefully Ronaldo can write up this tournament with a big performance.

Iceland, a big performance for them, can they nullify the threat? The

campaign begins, the referee blows his whistle and Iceland are

introduced to international football at its peak. All in white against

Portugal, who are predominantly in red. Ronaldo is immediately knocked

off the ball and gets a glare. Carvalho here for Portugal. It was a

strong challenge from Aron Gunnarsson, who dispossessed

Cristiano Ronaldo and then glared at him. He's at it, Steve, isn't he?

Ball given away to Bjarnason. Loses it in turn to Ronaldo. Nani. Through

to the goalkeeper, Halldorsson, who will be happy to get an early touch.

He did well. They had to get numbers back to stop that. Ronaldo running

at the opposition, getting a bit of freedom. All the way through to

Patricio. It's not all about Ronaldo,

obviously it's mostly about Ronaldo, but when you look around and see

Pepe, Danilo, Joao Mario, they have some other good players. A mixture

of youth and experience. I was particularly impressed when Danilo

played against England recently. He looks like another one that has come

off the Portuguese football conveyor belt. Inside two Joao Moutinho, away

to Pepe. That is a good ball from Mario into the box, but straight

into the comfortable grasp of Hannes Halldorsson. Fernando Santos in

charge of Portugal. We speak about Iceland being debut dance, and they

are. They have joint managers. The very familiar Lars Lagerback, this

is his seventh major tournament final. Six with Sweden and one with

Nigeria. He is making no debut. He knows what he's doing. Gylfi

Sigurdsson cuts inside, Sigurdsson! Patricio saves and saves again the!

That was nearly the story of the first week in the Euros in a

nutshell. Excellent work down the left-hand side. What was Pepe doing?

Pulling out of the challenge. He has to put the ball out, put it in the

standard necessary. Trying to be too clever. If you are Iceland you want

Sigurdsson with those big chances. Moutinho for Portugal.

Too much on that firm Nani -- for Nani. Excellent work, it really was.

As he steps inside, Danilo, you expect him to bend it beyond

Patricio in goal, passed his left hand side, but didn't get it right.

He went for power and it was a comfortable save in the end. Trying

to give him the eyes, trying to go near post. It wasn't a great finish.

Eidur Gudjohnsen in the middle of your shot there. Still going, 37

years young, Eidur Gudjohnsen. He will retire from international

football for the second time after this tournament. Pepe for Portugal.

The free kick does go Portugal's way. Nani is edging towards 100 caps

and after night, 97 for Nani. Another one who has the talent but

has always consistent enough. Pepe has come forward, so has

Ricardo Carvalho. Joao Moutinho and Danilo as well.

three good touches. Not the greatest free kick from Joao Moutinho. Nani

four started every game in qualification.

Dangerous. It's far too easy. Danilo just

trying to get the direction on it, not able to get the power going away

from goal. Joao Moutinho with the second corner. That is much more

comfortable. WHISTLE Bjarnason for Iceland, the referee

having a word with Aron Gunnarsson. The temptation is to see Iceland as

rank outsiders and total underdogs, but they came into this tournament

coming second in the qualification group. Three teams from that group

made the finals, because Turkey came through a play-off, and the

Netherlands didn't, a strong group. Yes, it is. Just missed out on the

last World Cup to an excellent Croatian side in the play-off. It

has been a work in progress in the last ten years. Flag is up.

As you can hear... The blue shirted haunts from Iceland reacted rather

late to the linesman's flag. It was a long time up before they realised

it. But it was the right decision. Good battle. Bjarnason arrives on

the scene, the decision has gone Portugal's way. Huge experience,

Lars Lagerback. He will stand down at the end of this tournament. He is

67 now. And the man alongside, Heimir Hallgrimsson will take sole

charge. We talk about Iceland having a population the size of Leicester,

which is about right. I did put a call into the Icelandic Embassy this

morning to ask how many Icelandic men that are between the age of

20-40 who could conceivably be picked for the squad. There are

fewer than 50,000. That means if you are an Icelandic man in that age

group you have all won in 200 chance of being in the squad. For someone

whose name ends in son, I'm a bit disappointed to have been

overlooked. That was a poor ball from Sigurdsson

from the back. Had a bit of comfortable possession.

Sigurdsson's feat. Danilo recognise that. That is exactly what he does,

that is why he plays in the side. Allows the likes of Moutinho and

Mario ahead of him to be the creative players.

Ten minutes in the best chance was for Iceland. And a huge chance as

well. They have not been great in possession, Iceland, when they have

had it, a few overhit passes. But when you get those chances, those

big chances, those big moments, you want them to fall to Sigurdsson and

you expect him to do better with the chance he had. Carvalho to Pepe.

Bjarnason made the challenge on the referee saw nothing wrong with it.

Just to be -- just a bit scrappy at the moment, isn't it? They are not

able to string a few passes together.

Carvalho, the ageing Portuguese defender, now at Monaco. So popular

at Chelsea for so long. We have seen that challenge from

Ricardo Carvalho a lot. He knows what he is doing, just leaving his

foot in at the end of it. Keeping a very good shape, Iceland.

Vieirinha. Darting inside. The goalkeeper just wanted a second look

at that. Just a very good attacking full-back, Vieirinha. Strikes it

well, just did not have the direction. Straight at Halldorsson.

The foul was by Joao Mario. He is a little bit off-balance, although he

struck it well enough. Gylfi Sigurdsson is down at the

moment for Iceland. Portugal are about to put the ball out of play.

Ronaldo gave it to Gudmundsson so that he could do so. The referee is

coming over to have a look at Sigurdsson. He has just trodden on

the top of his left foot. He is OK. He looks fine. It is a

nasty one. Just get on with it now. One of the most historic stadiums in

France, home to St Etienne, of course, who had that great team in

the 1970s, home of Jacques Santini, who is here today. As is the star of

the team which reached the European Cup Final in 1976. Danilo for

Portugal, who have not really troubled Halldorsson yet - certainly

not with anything which would unduly worry him. Lovely ball in! That was

a brilliant ball in from Ronaldo, and Nani's header hit the

goalkeeper. Top-class - brilliant from Ronaldo. Shifting it onto his

right foot, great ball in. Excellent movement from Nani. Gets into a good

position. It is actually a really good save from Halldorsson, getting

our current crosses line. -- getting back across his line.

He gets the full-back backed up. Brilliant ball, great pace on it. As

I say, it was good movement from Nani, and a really good save

goalkeeping. Gomes now for Portugal with a

powerful surge. Plays it to Nani. Nani has Bjarnason for company.

Vierinha, into Ronaldo...! Begin, it is super movement. Pulling away onto

the shoulder of the defender, getting across him, just could not

quite get the direction. But again, great movement. If he has a good

tournament, Ronaldo could become the highest scoring player of all time

in European Championship finals. Michel Platini, on nine, Alan

Shearer on seven. Ronaldo currently on six in his three previous

tournaments. Sensational. More than 50 goals

again, just amazing. Six seasons running now.

STEVE WILSON: Halfway through the first half, Iceland will be quite

happy with the way it has gone. Gudmundsson to Saevarsson.

Gudmundsson felt that, and has got the free kick.

Someone needs to wake up, because Bjarnason is there. . Pepe goes to

ground and gets the free kick, but there was certainly hesitation

there. KEVIN KILBANE: We know, they are

uncomfortable at times, Pepe and Carvalho. Alan Shearer was

mentioning the set pieces for Iceland, they could really cause

problems. Ronaldo missed it! Patted away by goalkeeper Halldorsson.

Lovely ball from Pepe towards Ronaldo, who could not make any

contact. Bjarnason... Well, you have got to

compete, but the referee did not like that much. What a chance that

was, brilliant ball from Pepe. The same movement as Giaccherini last

night. You expect him to do better. It is a good chance. That is poor in

the end from him. Here comes the free kick for that Bjarnason

challenge. To be taken by Joao Moutinho. Halldorsson again with a

comfortable take. Hill, furious. That has happened to war three times

Danilo, that is asking rather a lot of Nani. He has won throw.

Just that final ball at the moment, Kevin, for Portugal, not really on

the money. No, it is not, apart from that ball from Pepe to set up

Ronaldo. That was a great ball. Great movement from Ronaldo, and he

has got to be scoring. Big chance. Gomes could not make the most of

that error. Joao Mario was beaten, but Ricardo Carvalho wasn't.

Beautifully timed tackle. Yes, we have seen that so often. 38 now, but

brilliantly timed challenge. Joao Mario, that was a very good

ball. It was just a little bit too high for Joao Moutinho. He read that

well, Arnason. Bodies behind him as well - he knew he had to deal with

it. That looked to me like it had gone out of play.

You can see the setup from Iceland every time - allow Portugal to get

over the halfway line, then put them under more pressure, going into a

rigid 4-4-2. That's good reading for Iceland, 0-0

after half an hour. Joao Mario. I still think Gylfi

Sigurdsson's chance was every bit as good a chance as Nani's header. A

super chance. Gomes, Nani. 1-0! Switch off for a second and Portugal

Andre Gomes, when he gets in he gets his head up. A brilliant run from

Nani near post and it's a simple task at the end of it,

realistically. But I have to say, it has been coming. They've been a bit

slack in possession, Iceland. That will settle them down now. Well

finished from Nani. He missed his first chance. His 18 number-macro

It will be a pro. -- a throw. Sigurdsson had that early chance in

the third minute to put the cat amongst the Portuguese pigeons but

didn't take it. And now they are one down. You get these big chances in

games. They will have to contain Iceland. When you get those big

moments, you have to take them. Danilo looking to put it to the back

free kicks in wide areas in this game but that was a Super Bowl. The

changing angle. He had to deal with it, Bjarnason. Pepe coming from

shot. Deflected, I think. It is. Another corner. Got to try and see

this spell through at the moment, Iceland. They are struggling and

half-time. It just has a feel at the moment that this is an important

good stuff in the paper with her riders and, the long-standing

international Icelandic player. He said when he moved to England he was

23 but in mental terms he was still like a teenager because the

Icelandic system was so far behind, and that is no longer the case.

Carvalho. Pepe. A lovely turn away from Gylfi Sigurdsson. Joao Mario

had gone down for Portugal. Bjarnason here charging forward for

Iceland, trying to curl it off the outside of its boot around Pepe.

Didn't quite happen. Got a bit of pace, Bjarnason.

almost fell for Gudmundsson at the back post. He was in a good position

there. It is a better ball from back to front. Just a little floater, to

give them a chance to attack early on. But a vital touch at the back

post to deny a good chance for Iceland. Their first corner of the

game. A few hoots from behind the goal from the Icelandic rounds,

thinking they might have a penalty shout. Not a good set play from

Iceland again. They have had a couple of chances. Aron Gunnarsson

to take this for Iceland. Towards Sigthorsson. The Portuguese

writeback said it didn't come off him, but the referee says, yes it

did. Corner again. Hardly a long throw, but certainly made the most

of it. Gylfi Sigurdsson to take this for

Just taking an opportunity to have a word with Aron Gunnarsson. That is a

decent delivery. Andre Gomes got his head on it. Here is Nani. Joao

back to Nani. Well taken, Halldorsson did well and delivers it

quickly. Pepe is not going to get back as quickly as he got forward,

players, like Cristiano Ronaldo who will have memories of being beaten

by underdogs at the European Championships. Losing the opening

Wise enough and experienced enough no not -- to know not to take

anything for granted. They will be happy going in at

half-time if it stays like this. Iceland have offered very little

going forward, a big chance early on, but you expect better from them

from set plays. They haven't provided any telling balls into the

area. Ronaldo to Guerreiro. Nice run, but blocked in the end, a

Portuguese throw. Vieirinha. Taken away from Nani by

the flying figure of Saevarsson. Can't get the ball, Iceland. Got to

try and see this spell through, see it through to half-time. That has to

come a time in the game when they will throw bodies forward.

Vieirinha, a good ball, but too high for Cristiano Ronaldo, who had

Sigurdsson jumping just in front of him. He has picked up a couple of

good positions, Cristiano Ronaldo, pulling away to Saevarsson. Just

quite get it on target again. That was the chance, excellent awareness

Danilo. Who presumably had something to say

There has been a few of those throughout this first half. So, Nani

with the only goal. Great early chance, though, for Gylfi

Sigurdsson, which would have been a dream start for Iceland. But in the

end, Nani getting the goal after some clever play by Andre Gomes. At

half-time, it is Portugal 1-0 Iceland.

GARY LINEKER: Decent half of football, Portugal leading through

that Nani goal, his first in 635 and its author European Championship

football. Important to get your team up and running? Yes, it might have

been different if Sigurdsson had put that early chance in. That is all

they have had, really. I think there's more goals in the game for

Portugal. Iceland will have to start chasing the game at some stage. Seen

enough to think Portugal might go a long way in this tournament? It is

difficult to say. I was asking myself at the beginning if Nani is

actually a guy who can play in the middle. To be fair, he could have

scored with his head before. Should have scored. For I think sometimes

they bother too much about possession. When you have a chance

to go through the line of a team, especially on the counter, do it.

They needed to do that more, I think. How have you seen it,

Vincent? I was expecting some stoical defending from Iceland, I

was expecting them to close ranks. I felt Portugal were getting through

quite easily. If that's the way they are going to approach the rest of

the game, they are going to struggle. Torture goal was many,

many chances. You can see Iceland setting up here, getting men behind

the ball. Exactly the same here, almost everyone behind the ball. How

you get through that is not this... You have now got a chance to

counterattack. So you move the ball quickly. For no, not on this

occasion. It is too many touches, and it is slow. You cannot get

through so many defenders like that. Same thing here. You turn and you

quickly play it forward. Moutinho, if he turns there, they are straight

on the attack. Instead, he knocks it back. The first time they actually

do it, just after half an hour, it was brilliant. Brilliant ball around

the corner. Another one touch. Within four passes, they have hit

the counterattack. Thank you very much, 1-0. Do more of that

second-half, and there is more in this game for them. What I like

about this, Gomes came into the pocket at the right time. I know it

sounds easy, but it is the timing of everything. It is about momentum,

and the moment that you do it. When they play quickly like that, it

makes it much harder for defenders. Yes, and they have the players to do

it. You need to have the players to do it. I'm going to point out maybe

that the Iceland midfielder is caught napping a little bit. He is

forcing the central defender to come out and meet Gomes. I would say

without Iceland, before they think about going for but, they need to

make sure that they are not leaking from everywhere. They have got to be

secure. As we thought, if Sigurdsson scores, things are different. For

sadly he didn't. It is great pressure from him, actually. They're

going to get the ball back. He gets it. I would have gone the other

corner. I think we would know what you would have done, we have seen it

about 300 times, Thierry! For that he's of skill is... See you later!

At this point you think they are going to have a chance in the game.

What he has done was, just looking to the left of the goalkeeper, and

he tries to put it in the near side. He should have scored. That was

pretty much the only chance Iceland had. Portugal had a couple. Nani's

header was one of them. Ronaldo has got the defender where he wants him

here. It is almost impossible to stop him, because he is so quick

with his feet. That is a sitter. Great save! It is a brilliant cross,

but he should score. Anywhere else, it is a goal. He is not necessarily

known for his heading, I suppose. Here's a forward, he should score.

What do we think of Ronaldo's performance so far, it has not quite

happened for him? But that is very much Ronaldo. He does not really do

a lot in terms of coming into midfield and running with the ball.

But if you put the ball in the box, he would have scored that one.

Vincent said it - if Nani crossed to him before, he would have scored

that one. You cross the ball, he's in the box, and I love that one. It

is always on. I was actually surprised he did not go with the

inside of his foot rather than trying to hit it on the volley. But

it the first game busy they are Barry Cook double in creating

chances, which I think is a positive for Portugal. I think you have to

give Pepe a lot of credit as well. He gave a really good diagonal ball

to Nani. And then again, it is always on. If you make a run in

behind, and the timing is right, like we saw with Italy yesterday,

great ball for Ronaldo, and he would have scored. But he is human! Pepe

has not squealed once in agony, on the plus side! Not long now until

the much anticipated British clash... I must ask this of you

England - what shall we see? Promise, and only that, of ancients

turned grey? Rise, like lions. The Dragon under the Mt. Something

has stirred in you. Spread your wings!

Wales of course top Group B after beating Slovakia on Saturday.

Manager Chris Coleman has been speaking to Robbie Savage.

COMMENTATOR: 58 years they have waited, and victory in their first

game home in on the big stage! It was a great game to be involved in.

I was absolutely delighted with the three points, in your first game.

Each and every one of those players has been absolutely unbelievable...!

I said, they want to do it for you - and that is a massive thing, as a

football manager. Before that Slovakia game, we have not had a

great run of results. We are looking around, and confidence is a bit low.

Now, you see everybody joining in, and the players want to progress

with this team. And they want to be successful. To see that reaction

from everybody, it is genuine. Those three points, with England drawing,

the pressure now is on them? Of course it will be a typical, I would

imagine, British derby game. I think it will be fast and furious, and

there's so much riding on it. How do your players feel about this game?

Our players are absolutely right up for it, because we are playing

against a very good team at the end of the day. You know Roy very well -

after that trawl, do you think he will approach it in a different way?

Roy is a very meticulous coach, a very good coach. If you have got a

suitcase full of which is, it is not always easy to throw them all

together. You have got to find a way to make them Joe Arundel Thursday

afternoon, your biggest day as a manager? Yes, the consequences are

incredible. That is why it will be the biggest game I have managed,

yes. With so much talk about events off the field, it is easy to forget

that England drew to check with Russia. Gabby Logan reports from

their camp. 48 hours to go until England's next group game against

Wales. Their final press conference was dominated as much by matters off

the pitch as on it. We want everybody to be safe and sensible -

enjoy the match but be respectful, we are out there playing, supporting

our country, playing for our country so before everybody to be sensible

and safe, is the message. Has everything that has happened put you

off encouraging family and friends to come over? No. I think Uefa have

reacted to what has happened, and the players are confident that the

security staff in charge will fully control the situation and the

families will be safe. Personally, come the match day, you are just

fully focused on the game. It is not until after that you will start to

think really about your family. The contrast in terms of the knowledge

you have of the players involved in this match, compared to Russia,

could not be greater. You know these players, you see them week in, week

out, so is the build-up a bit more like a club game? Maybe. I have got

some team-mates who play for Liverpool. I'm not sure I will be

speaking them from now on before the game. But there is something special

about the game, definitely. There is a British feel to it, and I think

that will be good for the spectator and for the neutral. It is a pivotal

aim, we know we need a positive result. But we have the belief that

we can get at. We will have live coverage of that game on Thursday.

strike first! We tend to focus a lot on the goals and the creative

players, but we have got Vincent here, a great defender, so I want to

talk a bit about the dark arts of defending. We saw a bit of Carvalho,

and we have got Pepe as well, who give as good as they get, put it

that way. What did you make of this? It is the left leg which annoys me a

little bit. It is coming too high. Dark arts, you say, but it needs to

be fair. So you disapprove of that? Yes, actually, I have to say I

disapprove of it! Just! I'm sure it is important for a defender to let

the centre forward no that you are there? Definitely. And this is what

I am saying - hard but fair. What is there just, then? Fair is that you

do not try and injure them - you play the ball. But I think strikers

need to be able to take it as well. We always have the last laugh,

because they can kick us all we want but we can just run away and score.

All we need is one time. You can win 100 full stomach we win the last

one, we win. Being together as a pair for quite a long time, those

two at the back, is it important? 38 years of age, it is a lot of

experience. But I will say this, before I judge Portugal on their

defending, I want to see how it progresses, because there has not

been a challenge yet. As you would probably expect from a nation like

Iceland. There is Ronaldo, having a word with the officials. We can

rejoin Kevin Kilbane and Steve Wilson.

COMMENTATOR: They have been very comfortable but sometimes the

Portuguese they leave you wanting more. Yes, they do. A little bit

lethargic at times. Difficult to play through the Icelandic side, we

know that. But I think there is a lot more to come, as the tournament

progresses that is when the likes of Ronaldo step up to the art and put

in big performances in big games. It has been a low key start for them.

Portugal from left to right in the second half, no substitutions as yet

from either manager. No yellow cards in the game either,

and just the one chance for Iceland, but it was that big one early on the

Gylfi Sigurdsson. A chance we have become accustomed to see him take.

Pepe. I think that was the disappointing

thing in the first half for Iceland, how disappointing they were from set

plays. It might be a set play that gets them into this game, it gets

them back into a. Ronaldo, Danilo. Ricardo Carvalho.

Joao Moutinho. Joao Mario has ghosted forward on the edge of the

penalty area. Vieirinha, well advanced. Looking to see where

Ronaldo is, there he is. Well blocked. Sigurdsson got in the way,

the defensive Sigurdsson, the number six. Back to Ronaldo.

The initial strike blocked. Even on his left foot, comfortable and

confident enough to take it on his weaker side does he have a weaker

side? Strikes it into the ground. Didn't have a lot to talk about at

half-time, fairly quiet, low key from Cristiano Ronaldo. But he had a

few big moments in the first half, some good chances for him.

Saevarsson forward for Iceland, towards Jon Dadi Bodvarsson. Ricardo

Carvalho forward. Vieirinha looking for Ronaldo.

Quickly in was Aron Gunnarsson. Guerreiro, a good little run that,

it has resulted in a corner. It probably shouldn't have done,

Halldorsson was a bit slow to react. He could have freed the white man

up, Guerreiro. That was poor, poor goalkeeping at the end. -- the wide

man. Alt by Sigthorsson. Not exactly sure

what Vieirinha thought he was doing with that.

Group F started with a surprised earlier today, with Austria, many

people's fancy to maybe overachieve in this tournament, losing to

Hungary. Hungary are Iceland's next opponents.

Off the grateful heel of Aron Gunnarsson.

Big shout. No foul. He has been impressive, Andre Gomes,

looking to get forward. It was a foul, a clear block from Saevarsson.

Body check on him. The referee in a really good position there, as well.

Bjarnason in the middle, Sigthorsson as well. The cross coming in from

Gudmundsson. Terrible defending, Yarmouth and with the Finnish! 1-1.

-- with the finish. Absolute bedlam among the Icelandic

supporters. Awful defending. Bjarnason comes in well and finishes

it. Gets himself in all sorts of trouble, he doesn't need to. Gets

caught out badly. First off they missed a big chance, but Bjarnason

comes in. Such bad defending from Portugal, really bad goal to

concede. But brilliant moment for the Icelandic. Into the history

books for Bjarnason. Two goals in ten games in qualifying

for these finals and has just tucked away their first-ever goal in a

tournament final. It's a great moment.

The deflection has fallen to Nani. Bjarnason in with the challenge. He

will be absolutely pumped after that.

He has just won the Swiss title, so he's having a good run, Bjarnason.

He plays for Basel. He read across well. Vieirinha got it all wrong.

Very little possession for Iceland in this game, not really able to get

any momentum going forward. But if you take your big chances... Yes. He

just slipped in there, Skulason. Just rolled off his calf.

Iceland has put a bit of extra pace in Portugal's play. As I say that,

Carvalho puts it out of play. Poor from Carvalho. A bit more urgency

from Moutinho, Ronaldo and Nani. Looking for it to be a lot brighter

in the final third. Move the ball quickly, try and take the Icelandic

players out of position. Pepe, Vieirinha. Caught by

Bjarnason. And the first yellow card of the game comes out for Iceland's

goal-scorer. There's no doubt about that. Could

be another yellow card in front of us, Skulason taking out Ronaldo.

Frustration for Pepe. He doesn't need to make the challenge.

Saevarsson is going nowhere. But allows Iceland to kill the game, set

the play up, condense it. Long ball forward, that's how they've played

this game. Fantastic for them. Tempted to do the words from the old

song, clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right, year I am in

the middle with you. He must feel like that a lot of the time. But his

record over the last seven or eight years at international level has

been outstanding. Aron Gunnarsson, whose brother is an

Icelandic handball champion. A nice double for the Gunnarson family.

Helped on by Sigthorsson. Carvalho, Pepe. Nani. Now they might break.

Ronaldo, great vision. Joao Mario. Four flying at the Icelandic penalty

it crossed his mind to give him the ball. A lovely break, lovely touch

from Ronaldo to set Joao Mario away. Received a pass back from him.

mucking about there. Wouldn't be so happy if it finishes

to play for Rotherham. That is a really poor ball. It certainly was.

A bit of movement ahead of him from Sigthorsson. He is the one that

takes Pepe away in a surely. The full-back Vieirinha has to do

better, he has to adjust his body and try to get closer. Such a poor

goal to concede. Given away to Gylfi Sigurdsson, just couldn't take it in

somehow got it around the post. Yes, he did not look comfortable. Good

Good block. For all their physicality, Iceland, they have not

conceded one free kick within range. That obviously would have been one

defended dead ball very well. It is their own quality which has been

Cleared away well by Gudmundsson. They have got to have some white

shirts up the field at some point, Iceland. I can't keep just bring it

back to Portugal, with half an hour to go.

Cross comes in from Vieirinha. Nani! That is good movement from Nani. It

is a good ball from Vieirinha, slight deflection on it. He has got

forward well at times. Has not always been great with his

deliveries from wide areas. He is on the born-again now. -- on the ball

again now. Nani has made a good run, and that

is well covered again by Arnason. That has been taken extremely

quickly by Joao Mario. There's urgency from Cristiano Ronaldo, who

is looking to get the game going quickly. Mistake by Joao Mario.

Fernando Santos, the Portuguese coach, will be looking to make a

change. It has gone a bit flat. Portugal's quality has let them down

at times. Imagine if they pinch another one?!

Arnason working really hard to get there first. And that was a good

ball in. He did well, Bodvarsson. The Portuguese full-back Vieirinha

is not having the best of times in this second half. No, with Cedric

Soares sitting on the bench, he will be thinking, I could play there.

Pepe. Substitutes warming up all over the place and it

ever-increasing urgency. Iceland, defending stoutly. Joao Mario, into

a great area! , but Arnason was therefore Iceland. Ronaldo was a

little bit on his heels there. The white shirts just struggling to find

a way out at the moment. They just cannot keep hold of the ball. It was

the same in the first half. Forward by Sigurdsson. Pepe is

there. As I said at the start, Portugal are

not immune to embarrassment. Albania won in Portugal in qualifying. Cape

Verde also beat them in a friendly. I do not mean that this respectfully

to Iceland, to suggest it would be embarrassing for them to beat

Portugal, because they are a very good side, but it would certainly be

a surprise. Well played by the defender. And Pepe has not down

Bodvarsson, and I think he knew exactly what he was doing. I wonder

what Cuneyt Cakir will make of this. It is a foul from Bodvarsson, but

just when he goes down... The legs,, and there's absolutely no need for

Coming shortly for Portugal will be Renato Sanches. Bayern Munich got in

quickly to sign him from Benfeito this summer for an awful lot of

German euros. That was easy, really, for

Saevarsson. It is following the same pattern,

Steve, isn't it? Just back to front. Attack after attack, but just

breaking down. Nani - the referee's whistle has

gone for the earlier foul on Reinaldo Rueda -- on Ronaldo. Here

is the change, and Moutinho is coming off for Portugal. On comes

Renato Sanches, who is joining Bayern Munich from Benfica, costing

them ?27 million, rising to a possible ?60 million. The youngest

Portuguese player ever to be kicked for a major tournament, beating the

record set by Cristiano Ronaldo. Flicked on by Nani! Oh, that is a

whisker! Halldorsson is beaten. It is a really good all in. Just

unlucky. That really is clever. Six inches wide, I would say - no more

than that. 20 minutes of normal time to go. Iceland free kick - that's

good news for them, just gives them the chance to settle themselves

down. Sigthorsson coming back from an of

gets it right, really. 20 years ago, Eidur Gudjohnsen on

the Icelandic bench came on to play for his country. And the player who

went off was his dad. Aron Gunnarsson with this throw.

extremely dangerous. Really good delivery from the throw and towards

Bodvarsson. Haven't had much joy. Long ball back wins the initial

He has done OK, but no more than OK. They bring on Ricardo Quaresma, who

is 32 now. A chequered international career. He missed Euro 2004 injured.

Left out in the World Cup squad two years later. Left out again in 2010.

Went to Euro and it 12, but sat on the pitch the whole -- sat on the

bench the whole tournament. He has been around a long time but only his

third ever appearance in the tournament final. Positive

substitution, they needed to change things up. Quaresma probably wasn't

quite fit to start the game. And unpredictable player, a real talent.

A poor header from Pepe, it really was. Towards Bodvarsson at Pepe

makes amends. Good defending by Arnason. He knew

if he headed it clear, Cristiano Ronaldo was lurking.

It is fair to say that I think those in blue are enjoying it rather more

than those in red at the moment. It sounds like the Icelandic fans

are singing, On You Spurs but I'm sure they're not! Vieirinha.

Slightly fortunate, Vieirinha. Sanches. Gomes to his left, Nani in

the middle and Ronaldo as well, Quaresma on the right. Came to Gomes

rather fortunately. Quaresma. Deflected. Halldorsson change

direction well. It was a good save. That's what they want to do,

takes, doesn't it? It takes a lot to get them sticking together through

those difficult times, to get big results in big tournaments. For no

good in the air, you expect him to score.

minutes ago that I couldn't see Iceland scoring. I might have to

rewind on that. They have bodies forward. They can get two or three

feet, almost pulled it back then Eder. Bjarnason. That has gone out

of play. You have said that a lot, Gunnarson. So many vital

interceptions. No problem at all for Halldorsson in

former Celtic player, actually. Played one game for the club in

2007, so if you are a Celtic fan and don't remember him, you are

forgiven. It is a Portuguese throw. It is now

That's how close Iceland are to an historic result. In comes the free

point against Portugal in Santa chinchilla they have put in an

enormous shift against a not very inspired Portuguese side. -- in St

sporting history. What a performance from little

Iceland. They have come all the way to France, their first major

tournament, to take on one of the big stars of the tournament, and one

of the big teams, and have managed to take a point. Phenomenal effort

from Iceland. And they deserve it. ALAN SHEARER: No doubt about it.

They could even have nicked it, they had a decent chance to do it. Really

impressed in the second half. We highlighted at half-time, how

Portugal could pass it quicker. But Iceland changed it in the second

half. They were more direct, but people into the box, and they were

absolutely brilliant. What an unbelievable night for them, it is a

staggering achievement. I think they have got 30,000 fans in the stadium,

which is actually about a 10th of their population. And they deserve

those applause from their fans, Thierry. They do. They went a

certain way in the second half, they took it back to basics, long balls,

flicks, see what can happen. Movement in the box, and they

scored. But you also have to say that Portugal - lack of creativity

against what Iceland had to offer in the second half. But I thought they

were going to win. But a draw, it is amazing. Vincent, it is a great

effort from one of the underdogs of the tournament? Yes. Difficult to

understand what kind of an impact that will have back home. You can

only feel happy for them, really. Always like an underdog to do well.

I would just say, maybe they were overwhelmed in the first half, and

that's why we did not see the best of Iceland. But certainly they will

go back home and already, they are heroes. They have got a point, it is

unbelievable. Let's have a look at Group F, see how things stand.

Hungary and the day top of the group. They play Iceland on Saturday

and another win for Hungary would send them through. Portugal and

Austria also meet on Saturday. It will be a moment which will be

played in Icelandic football history for many years. And so it should be.

It was a very well worked goal from their point of view. Good ball into

the box. Great movement from Sigthorsson. The defenders were all

over the place. It is his movement which creates havoc in the box for

Bjarnason to have that space at the far post. Terrible defending, I have

to say, but brilliant for them. Both defenders go to the near post, and

it is a brilliant finish. They got mixed up, Thierry? They did, but if

you don't stand still, you find yourself in a situation where you

create chaos for the two centre-backs. What a goal. He could

have got but goal at beginning - he didn't. It was very difficult for

the defenders. You have a look at it in greater detail? Yes. You can see

here, Sigthorsson wins the header and doesn't stop. Here, I was

wondering, can you cross it straightaway? Yes, I think he could

have done. But then, what I like is, Gunnarsson does not stop. And here,

the number nine takes Pepe away, which creates the confusion. Great

delivery, great finish. 1-1. You always need to move in and around

the box, especially when it is two against two. From a defensive

aspect, Pepe, lovely guy that he is, got himself into a bad position? As

Thierry mentioned, there's two opportunities to cross. The first

one, Bodvarsson does really well, he could have crossed there. So I would

say, try and get across, because then, you can solve this. This is

about communication. I would say before that, and you will see, it is

an easy finish, but before that, if he gets himself into the position to

stop the first course, then there is no need to change positions for the

second cross. As defenders, would you hold your position, like they

swapped over, what would you do? I can understand what Pepe is

thinking, he thinks, I am the biggest, I have got to follow the

big guy. But even if that ball gets to the big guy, he is not getting

there in time. I would say, shout as loud as you can to Vieirinha. It is

the movement. Because of the first movement, Pepe finds himself in a

position where he is actually at left back. Communication, people

underestimate how important it is, for a centre half, it is

communication. They could have solved it in many different ways.

But they didn't, which is would for Iceland. Portugal's goal came from

Nani. Yes,, and there was not enough of this am a quick movement, one

touch football. Well worked goal, good finish. They work it really

well. Got in behind, good ball across. And a good finish. That was

the early ball which could have done for Iceland. Ronaldo did not have

the best of evenings, and for him, he had what was a gilt-edged chance

to score, Vincent? Yes, but I cannot criticise this man. He has had an

off night. He is probably going to get them through the group. On

another day, he scores this. I think he was actually trying too hard

tonight. There was things which did not look natural. Normally, nine

times out of ten, ten times, you would expect him to score. If I am

the next team playing Ronaldo, I would be worried, because someone is

going to pay. He always has a game like this at a big competition with

Portugal. That is true. Iceland could have pinched it as well from

Finnbogason towards the end, which would have been quite something? And

then I would have been right, because a have them to win, for some

reason! It was a great piece of skill to get back on his left.

Anywhere else, and it was in the net. You have to give them credit on

how they stopped Ronaldo as well. They did not give a lot of space to

that seen in the second half. They made it really easy - get back to

basics, someone controls the ball, play along. The reason we have seen

Iceland qualifying, from a group with Holland, Turkey and the Czech

Republic, we have seen why tonight. Let's have a look at Ronaldo's

evening. It was definitely an off night for him. Frustrating night for

him. Couple of chances in the first half. This, for him, should have

done better. Sometimes you just know, it's not going to be or night.

Lovely little touch from him. No way he was passing that letter there was

some great defending, especially this one. I loved this one. They did

not give him a lot of opportunity to turn and have a go. This was the

one. If you have Ronaldo there, and not in the box, happy days. Still

smiling, regardless. He knows what's coming. And so do we, because we

have got plenty to look forward to tomorrow...

chances? Very disappointing. Better with Ronaldo inform, maybe? Yes, but
