danger of missing the knockout round of 16 if Nigeria qualify, if he's

Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella may have been tempted to rest

players with his side assured of qualification. They have named an

looking to avoid defeat to also go through to the round 16. Argentina

cooler here in the south of Brazil than plenty of other venues. Last

night here we had a huge thunder storm. Lots of rain. There are still

many puddles around outside the stadium. The pitch will have

It does look as Mascherano may have picked up an injury here in making

that challenge. He's up on his feet again, as we see

those slow motion replays that saw the contact from Peter Odemwingie en

masse Mascherano who won his 100th cap for Argentina against Iran, a

jumping up-and-down and generally making their presence heard.

There is a lovely pace to this match. Nigeria cannot quite leave

Emenike couldn't keep the ball in play. Babatunde with the path that

was a bit too strong. Nigeria have a player still down.

early goal that settled it the last time these two nations met at the

Garay and Zabaleta were all involved for Argentina, winning Gold. Nigeria

having to settle for Silver. Garay, missed the last month of the

inside the stadium in Porto Alegre even if the Nigerian fans are

significantly outnumbered by their Argentine counterparts. Messi

Aguero really does have a problem because, just outside the centre

circle, Aguero is down. There is plenty of activity down on

the Argentina bench. Ezequiel Lavezzi is about to come on.

Sergio Aguero, who had three separate month-long spells out of

action for his club, Manchester City, in England last season because

of injuries. Argentina will hope it isn't too

serious a problem. He certainly came across on this

near side, a couple of minutes ago, had long discussions with the

Taken charge of quite a few of these matches before in Italy. Away by

Fernandez. Zabaleta will eventually take the

throw. Mascherano actually scored in a

World Cup match, first goal in seven years, he has scored just three in

his 100 international appearances. 1-1 as we go into the last five

minutes of this first-half. Musa. He didn't keep it in. The last five

minutes of this may be as explosive as the first five minutes. The first

five minutes saw two goals, one for Lionel Messi and the other for Musa.

That is the first time in World Cup history that both sides have scored

inside the opening five minutes of a match. Neatly done by Oshaniwa. Gago

picks it up for Argentina. Zabaleta. In towards Higuain, away by Ambrose.

Rojo is there, no foul on Babatunde. Di Maria was the target for the

pass, cut out by Ambrose. Di Maria should get there first. Ambrose is

there again. Good defending. Ambrose who started in all but one World Cup

qualifier for Nigeria. Onazi is the player who is down.

Enyeama. Beautifully struck. Well saved. Enyeama, definitely the

busier of the two goalkeepers in this first half.

It was heading for the top corner, no doubt about it.

The reparation has brought it back. He was trying to play an advantage.

Might well have ran Argentina's way as well.

Having come close a moment or so ago, it surely now Messi is going to

try and test Vincent and the Emenike again. -- Enyeama. Minimum of two

minutes of additional time. There is an air of expectation around the

stadium. Argentina fans hoping their hero can do what he does best. Messi

strikes. Extraordinary! Four goals at this World Cup now for Lionel

realised, I am not going to get there. Just everything you want from

first half through Ahmed Musa. It was a swift response after Messi put

Argentina in front. There is no doubt Lionel Messi is making his

mark on this World Cup. Argentina have lost just one of

their last 14 World Cup group stage matches. Winning 11 of them. As

things stand, they will go into round of 16, the knockout stage with

nine points out of nine from Group F. Nigeria would also join them in

the knockout stages as runners-up of this group. Bosnia and Herzegovina

are currently beating Iran 1-0 which means Iran cannot catch Nigeria if

it stays that way. Nigeria in the Hall Green, kicking right to left in

this second period. Mascherano was just caught. By

another important save for Nigeria. We get the feeling, very much, we

have not seen the last goals in this game. Zabaleta.

All five of Argentina's previous World Cup matches against African

sides have been won by a one goal margin. They've won four of those.

Three of those victories coming against Nigeria. Their first meeting

to an African team was defeat to Cameroon in 1990.

Fouled in the end by Onazi and a kickout in frustration by the

midfielder. Amazing noise being generated by the

Argentina fans. I'm sure the atmosphere and noise is coming

across to you. Remember, it's just eight or nine hour car journey to

Porto Alegre from Argentina, which is the reason why so many supporters

are here to cheer on their team. Higuain. Wins a corner.

Onazi couldn't gather. Returned to Messi. Di Maria. Towards Musa,

Zabaleta wins it in the air. Lavezzi. Di Maria almost in behind

Mascherano, who was captain of Argentina at the last World Cup in

South Africa, four years ago. Lionel Messi who has really flourished

since his appointment as captain of Argentina. Further good news for

Nigeria. Ball played across. Just wide.

Vincent Enyeama certainly seems to be enjoying his encounter against

one of the world's best players. Just a little bit behind Messi

there. Has to readjust. The good news I was talking about, Bosnia and

Herzegovina have scored a second goal against Iran. That further

reinforces Nigeria's position in second place in Group F.

Iran will qualify if they win and Nigeria lose and Iran finish with a

superior goal difference to Nigeria. It's looking unlikely.

Able to get the ball across. A touch too long. Picked up by Ambrose. Di

Maria is right there with him. Musa. Just like Messi, he is on a

hat-trick. Nigeria get the corner. Odemwingie, standing closest to the

Ahead of Argentina's round of 16 match. There is real concern for

Nigeria here. All the while that Lionel Messi was making his way off

the pitch, the medical staff were on to treat, I think that is Michel

Babatunde who is down. He received the full impact of the shot from

Onazi. There's the shot from Onazi. It hit

his hand and his wrist more than anything. It may very well have bent

his wrist back, where it's not really supposed to go.

I hope it's not too serious for Michel Babatunde.

It did look at though he really did catch the full force of that shot.

After all that, Argentina have a corner kick.

Cup in the United States of America, making one appearance at that

tournament. His contract actually ex-spires after this World Cup. --

Nigeria remember hadn't conceded a goal in their opening two Group F

matches. Keeping clean sheets against Iran and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

They have conceded three times in this game. Di Maria making the run

ahead of him. Couldn't quite win it again, the

tall substitute. Emenike. Didn't quite run for Onazi. He was almost

through there. Lavezzi. A strong and powerful and determined

Joseph Yobo, whose record of starts at this World Cup was interrupted

when he was brought on as a substitute against Iran. There was a

pass available for Odemwingie, Square.

Argentina have lost just one of their 21 matches in all

competitions. That was a World Cup qualifier against Uruguay last year

when Argentina's place at Rizzo 2014 had already been assured. 14 wins

and six draws. -- at Brazil. Nigeria have a corner, only their

second of the match. Odemwingie will take it himself.

Higuain with the easy clearance. Ahmed Musa. He must surely feel as

though he can score with every opportunity that comes his way after

having found the net twice already in this match. No lasting damage for

Di Maria after that challenge. Emenike could not get there. Nigeria

who won the 2013 Africa cup of Nations, thus getting their

invitation to Brazil a year ahead of the events, for acclimatisation.

Quarter of an hour left. As it stands, both of these teams are

The Argentine goalkeeper who is still first choice, despite the fact

he made just nine appearances in all competitions last season for his

club, Monaco where he is on loan from Sampdoria in Italy. Alvarez

match. As we watched this replay, but it's still dozens, at the

just scored again. It is now 3-1 in that fixture.

Never really much chance of that threatening to be an equaliser for

Nigeria. Can they get one though in the time

sight of Vincent Enyeama. The goalkeeper makes a save from Di

today. Hasn't had too much to show for it

though, in terms of a goal. Plenty of opportunities. Every time he has

had a shot, Vincent Enyeama has been able to block it.
