Disappointed but not down hearted is the England angle, after losing to

Italy. Uruguay had many more reasons to be upset by their capitulation to

Costa Rica. Their wise old coach has long stressed that he never starts

tournaments well, indeed his country is without a win in six opening

World Cup games. It is time for both nations to put their beginnings

behind them, time to respond to the threat of an early flight home.

Nobody belted that out with more gusto than Joe Hart. There's an

excellent team spirit in the camp. One name dominates the Uruguay team

news with Luis Suarez deemed fit to return and start, just four weeks

after surgery to his left knee. The Liverpool man's inclusion is one of

five changes to the side humbled in game one. Gimenez, Pereira, Gonzalez

and Lodeiro come in. Spain might well be out of the

competition, but their referee could be here for quite a while longer, if

he performs well. It's the same England side that

kicked off against Italy, but there has been a shuffle of the three to

play behind Daniel Sturridge. It's Sterling right, Welbeck left and

Wayne Rooney will be able to have a greater impact in the middle. Only

Rooney and Steven Gerrard played the last time the country's clashed. It

was a 2-1 win then for England, over eight years ago.

Edinson Cavani is off the mark in terms of World Cup goals with his

penalty against Costa Rica. Also netted in South Africa four years

ago with a goal against Germany in the third/fourth play-off.

Ibrahimovic hoped to be here as a player, but he has journeyed to

Brazil to watch his fellow stars in action.

Away we go in Sao Paulo. It's not do or die. It's not the end game, if

either team loses today, not with Italy playing Costa Rica tomorrow.

But defeat for either side would make it, Phil, very, very difficult

to recover and get out of the group. It's almost impossible to recover,

if you lose this game tonight. It was interesting after the game on

Saturday, Roy Hodgson said it was the best England performance for 15

years, that's some statement to make. The hope is they'll go just a

little bit better still tonight. Arevalo doesn't stand on ceremony in

midfield. That generally is the Uruguayan way. Egidio Arevalo in

there, he will be the win to pick up Wayne Rooney when he's dropping in.

Huge pressure on England defenders after criticism, not only after the

game against Italy, but in the build up. It was highlight as the England

weak spot. I think it's the full backs tonight that have a big job to

do for England. Just looking at the early formations there, looks like

Uruguay will play a diamond. Godin is captain for tonight in the

absence of Lugano, the man who scored in the Champions League final

for Atletico Madrid and the man whose goal in Barcelona effectively

won the league for his club. Such a tough, rugged defender.

Muslera spilled the ball. Sturridge wasn't quite prepared for that. I

think he switched off for a minute there. A nervy moment for the

goalkeeper. Godin is an Atletico Madrid man,

buffer only played once in La Liga in his first year -- but only played

once in La Liga in his first glory Spain. -- first year in Spain.

There was a feeling that Lugano being injured wasn't necessarily a

good thing for England, which was perhaps a little unkind. No, I

watched the Costa Rica game and Lugano had a really poor game.

That's the weakness in the Uruguay back four.

Gerrard powered his way past there. That's perhaps what we didn't see

that much of from the England captain in game one.

It was difficult for Steven Gerrard the other night, he was outnumbered

in the midfield. It came off Cahill. Hart looks as

though he had spilled it behind for a corner. That's a wonderful one-two

from Luis Suarez. He likes to drift into the wide areas, so difficult to

mark when he's one v one with you. Hart has to get down sharply at the

near post. Looked as though that might have swept in. That was going

in. Just caught by surprise there from

Suarez. I don't think he meant it. Uruguay putting England under the

cosh a bit here. Another one from Suarez. The flag is up against

Cavani. Jagielka under real pressure from

the strong running Gonzalez. That's out. It's Uruguay's throw-in.

Roy Hodgson just very thoughtful on the bench. Wide-eyed the injured

Uruguayan captain, Diego Lugano is. Roy Hodgson said yesterday Uruguay

can't play as bad as they did against kofta reekament they have

started -- Costa Rica. They have started really fast. Both coaches

have pledged to playing an attacking game. That's exactly what we're

seeing. Roy Hodgson is staying true to his promise that we are going to

come to this tournament and attack. Already we're seeing more of

Leighton Baines, as the attacking left back. Because Uruguay are

playing a diamond, there is space on the outside for Johnson and Baines.

Sterling seemed to lose his footing. He was caught. It's an England free

kick. He tried to keep going. This is what he's good at, he takes the

ball. He's got short change of movement, short change of direction.

He commits defenders. Good bit of refereeing.

He could easily have been dereceived by Sterling's efforts to stay

upright. After the first couple of games, the refereeing standard in

the tournament has been outstanding. Can we use that same word to

describe this free kick? Let's hope so. Cavani was on defending duties.

That was Suarez on Gerrard. Steven Gerrard keen to point out that there

was no communication between him and Luis Suarez. That could wait. I am

sure when they get back to pre-training, Luis Suarez will be

reminding Steven Gerrard about that little bit of a knowledge. Steven

Gerrard maybe reminding Luis Suarez about it. -- may be. The assistant

referee on this nearside is Roberto Alonso.

Joe Hart assurance is telling everything covered. That life

assurance. -- Joe Hart assuring Raheem Sterling he has that

everything covered. Sturridge was trying to play through to Rooney. It

was blocked by a hand. The card itself. That is held. And

transferring them. In Daniel Sturridge found himself in. That's

my wonderful position. It is a clear and correct call. And if the right

to as well. -- and it was right to book him as well. Wayne Rooney still

seeking his first goal at a World Cup. He made a goal in the Italy

game for Daniel Sturridge. Is this his time you --? If his wife! That

it's live. -- Mac that is him and Juan Mata get on those free

kicks at the training ground. There is now a problem with Danny Welbeck

down hurt. It may just require some attention. There is something about

those tight Uruguayan tops that makes them look even more fearsome.

Cisse Aeros have to go for the ball. -- Caceres. The space is definitely

in wide areas for the full-backs to exploit. Just kept in. Johnson wins

the throw-in. I keep looking at number 17. He has most locked

himself onto Wayne Rooney. He has dropped into the midfield area.

Rooney has gone wide. Another throw for England.

Luis Suarez was taking a risk there but Jagielka did all right in the

end. Hartson mouths for England supporters. Hard beating a little

quicker as far as Phil Jagielka is concerned. -- heart. I think he was

looking for options in front of him. He was taking too long on the

ball. You cannot do that when Luis Suarez is around.

Both teams will consider they have started the game quite brightly. It

has been an outstanding start. Really high temple. Just thinking

about Raheem Sterling. He had lots of space against Italy in the

centre. He has to find ways to get into the game from wide areas now.

Jagielka did really well. Off balance. Being forced to ground

almost. Once again it was a Rooney's shadow,

Arevalo Rios. Wayne Rooney will have to take into visits and he does not

want to go into. Isolate him in wide areas. -- will have to take him into

the areas he does not want to go into.

There is no space in the middle of the midfield. It is crowded. It is

congested. Some room here. He is flagged offside. An angry response

from Suarez. Not to the assistant referee but to Caceres for the

timing of the ball. He delayed his past. Suarez was not happy with him.

He wanted the ball played early. I don't like it when the linesman puts

the flag up late. Cahill was caught late. I don't think there was any

need for Rodriguez to follow up with that tackle.

It has whistled over Joe Hart spark -- over Joe Hart's crossbar.

Christian Rodriguez. Goodness me, he got a hold of that. A mistake from

Jagielka. Just dangled the Lego bid. He just could not keep the shot

down. -- just dangled the leg. Joe Hart was not getting anywhere near

it. What we have seen in these early

exchanges, every time England get possession, Uruguay tried to commit

a foul and break up the play. We cannot get frustrated. I I would

imagine it is entirely what was expected. It is. England cannot get

frustrated. They have to keep the tempo going. Wait for the right

moment in wide areas. That is where the strength is for us today. Every

time I see a of that Rodriguez shot, it seems to get closer to the goal.

Blocked and behind for a corner. Trying to play the patient passes,

picking them at the right time. England looking impressive on the

offensive again. They looked dangerous on the counterattack. --

they do look. Definitely a threat. Rodriguez is complaining he has

taken a dig in the ribs from Daniel Sturridge. I think you may have been

giving a few pesos of his own. -- he may have. That was easy for Suarez.

Uruguay knocking around nicely but then forced to play the aimless ball

downfield. When Uruguay broke on the counterattack a few minutes ago, a

few months back Suarez would have been onto it. I can see how he's

going to make an impact today. It is a big ask to come back from an

operation. Rahim Stirling a little too keen. --

Raheem Sterling. Every time Raheem Sterling gets the ball, there are

two or three Uruguay players around him. He will be a marked man

tonight. Isn't it incredible, his rise since the turn of the year?

What he has done for Liverpool and now a marked man on the world stage.

I was speaking to Paulo Sergio, formerly of Brazil, and he said

Raheem Sterling could make the Brazilian team. I had my breakfast

with Danny Mills! Free kick for Uruguay. 20 breakneck speed minutes

played. 's -- Raheem Sterling and Welbeck

have swapped wings. Whistles coming from the Brazilian

fans in the crowd. I think they are generally in favour of England

against their rivals. No surprise that Uruguay do have the numerical

advantage in the stadium. Just a bit of an easier journey. I was speaking

to a lot of the locals outside the ground earlier on. The neutrals are

on England's site. There is great rivalry between Uruguay and Brazil.

He doesn't look fit to me, Luis Suarez. He's not moving or running

with the form we're used to seeing him. It's thoord read too much into

body language, I'd go along with that.

He had the pace to get out of a difficult situation. But might have

caused a bigger problem by conceding possession like that.

The shout to Cahill to leave it to him, over Welbeck and Jagielka.

Cahill with a clumsy clearance That's the second sloppy clearance

from the centre backs for England. Gonzalez has lifted one. Suarez is

offside. He takes issue with the assistant

this time. I can't believe how close Arevalo is

sticking to Wayne Rooney. He's definitely been told to stay as

close as possible in there. They see Wayne Rooney as a threat.

Both teams cancelling themselves out at the moment.

Perhaps careless with one or two clearances. Uruguay careless with

one or two throw-ins and layoffs. There's a lot of tension in these

games. I always think the second game in the tournament is almost the

most nervewracking. It can decide whether you stay in the tournament

or on a flight home. Wayne Rooney looks a lot more

relaxed and comfortable A free kick given for Sterling using

all of that mountainous weight against Pereira. It's a soft foul.

They worked that well in the end there, England. I always think those

challenges are soft. All he's doing is using his body weight. All of it.

Joe Hart is watching it and catching it.

He ignored the bodies that were charging towards him. It's brilliant

to see a goalkeeper in this competition actually catch a ball.

It's been a feature that's been annoying me. Every time a shot's

come in, it's been It's the punched. Double punch you don't like. I'm not

the biggest fan of goalkeepers, I've had run-ins with them over the

years. They've got the gloves on to catch it, not to punch, for me.

England are struggling get it away at the moment.

Cahill had to do that. Hart was coming, but Cavani might have got

something on that to hook it across goal. Wonderful pass from Lodeiro.

You might be able to tell that's Luis Suarez taking the corner.

It's caught England out. And Cavani with a quite brilliant effort,

really. He couldn't find the target with it. We got done against Italy

with a well worked corner. Nearly got done again there.

A wonderful run from Cavani. Eye contact with Luis Suarez. Is that

just a very English way of defending corners, we expect it to be high

into the box. It's just built in. We see that corner, Chelsea work that

corner sometimes in the Premier League. We should be aware of that.

Lovely flick from Sturridge. Welbeck trying to leave Gimenez behind. Goal

kick. Welbeck seemingly has just carried it over the white line

before the challenge. The replays have missed that

wonderful flick from Daniel Sturridge. It's the first time we've

seen Danny Welbeck open his legs up there. I think we have the speed to

beat that Uruguay back four. We need to get the ball in behind them.

Hart can quickly get that out to Raheem Sterling.

Cleverly he let it run for Rooney. That's a deliberate obstruction. It

will be an England free kick, maybe a little bit more.

Godin again. He can't afford to be -- it can't afford to be a little

bit more for him. He's lucky there, Diego Godin. He's already on a

booking. There's an elbow there into the face of Daniel Sturridge.

He's on last warning ground now. Good combination play between Rooney

and Sturridge there. Gerrard with the England free kick. Really good

delivery. Godin climbed high to head it away. If he does overstep the

mark once more, Uruguay would miss him. It's a nightmare for defenders

when you get booked so early. You walk a tight rope for the rest of

the game, particularly with the speed of England up front.

Gonzalez quickly over to confront Baines.

When we have the ball on the right side, they have to mikeshift the

ball over to the left in one-two touches with real speed. That's

where the space is, always on the opposite side.

Sliding in went Caceres. Another England prekick. They're -- free

kick. I think the referee is going to get a grip here, constant fouls

all the time, they're letting the Uruguay players get away with it.

I don't like seeing players booked, but constant fouling needs to be

punished. Caceres was booked in the opening game against Costa Rica.

Didn't get a card for that. Jordan Henderson is free on the edge

of the box there if Steven Gerrard spots him.

Over Muslera and off the bar! Wayne Rooney came in and came so close.

The keeper was beat there. A push has been spotted. Uruguay

free kick. England's little flurry is over for now. The keeper was well

beat there. I think it was just a bit too high for Wayne Rooney. He

tries to glance it in. He got up really well. He hung well.

He got up well. I think he'll be disappointed he didn't score,

though. The pressure is building now.

hold of Rodriguez. It will be a free kick for Uruguay. A little bit of

afters too. Rodriguez is making plenty of

everything that befalls him. I'm not sure Raheem Sterling got involved

off the ball. We can't let the Uruguayans frustrate us. He's got

hold of him. That's what the free kick was for. It's what happened

next. If anything, it was a foul on Steven

Gerrard. That's the second wrong decision he's made in that area of

the pitch. That wasn't Suarez's best.

Uruguay throw. It's the first time we've seen them drift out into

isolated areas. Just a glimpse of Diego Forlan. He

started the first game against Costa Rica. Player of the tournament four

years ago. If he comes on, he's bound to pose a threat to England.

35 years old but still plenty of know how and ability about him. A

great goal scorer. Left, right-foot shots from outside the box.

I thought Baines might be penalised for that. He got the ball, but it's

the way he challenged for it. I think he just went in slightly

showing his studs, which you can't do in this tournament. He's started

the game really well. He's getting forward a lot more, passing the ball

into the centre forwards and running. That's what we've seen from

him at Everton down the years. time. Defied gravity for a moment.

It is quite a difficult game to referee. A few niggles of the ball.

I think it is a C+ for the referee so far. Rooney wins the free kick. A

couple of free kicks he has given Uruguay in the right-hand corner.

You have to have very good site to score from that range. 40, 40 five

yards out. Take the extra pass. Do not become frustrated. -- 45.

Another player we have seen mature quite quickly over the last year.

Seems entirely comfortable at home in the biggest international

football of all. I'm sure if you asked several of the squad but they

would be doing in the summer, they would have said they were having a

long holiday. They can't have been many of them thinking about coming

to a World Cup. -- their account. Nothing in the game at the moment.

No goals. Pretty even. It is the space in wide areas again.

Securely on the right-hand side. Miscommunication between Welbeck and

veins. Wealthy they did well to recover. That's my Welbeck.

Really good tackle from her. It is likely to -- Pereira stuff the past.

Cavani. Suarez! Luis Suarez gives you avoid the! Brilliant movement

from the Liverpool man. Cavani picked him out. Suarez picked his

spot. He does not miss those. Uruguay lead. They got lucky in the

middle of the field. I think it was Lodeiro. The ball ricocheted off

Steven Gerrard. Luis Suarez, who has not been in the game at all, he has

not looked fit at times, just a little ricocheted in midfield past

Steven Gerrard. Look at this ball from Cavani. That had goal written

all over it. So difficult for Phil Jagielka. It was fantastic work

between the pair of them, the two biggest stars in the Uruguay side.

They combined clinically. Never mind the knee, the head is all right! And

England have to get heads right. Uruguay with the advantage in Sao

Paulo. It was a wonderful cross from Cavani. If you are a young player

practising heading at home, always headed back across the keeper. --

headed back. England went behind against Italy

and were only behind for about 90 seconds. Is there a quick riposte

here? Uruguay go again. Sturridge went for a goal. Muslera

down neatly. He would expect to save that. And he did. Those skill in the

middle of the field. Daniel Sturridge forced the keeper to make

a save. He has reacted well to going behind so far.

The referee having a word with Cahill.

Another England corner. The referee has the referee has to keep. He's a

very Cahill. That has to keep an high on Godin. He is a Cahill.

Great work from Raheem Sterling. Shame about the cross. Although it

will bring another corner. Time he has fantastic player and a sigh.

They -- says that the cases. something different. Take a short

corner. Get space in the box. Would that be the biggest criticism of the

silver? Spawn as they have had have been predictable? And yes, himself.

They have some great situations. The Gulf Suarez. Cavani dummied a shot.

You exactly what he was doing the fifth ball Suarez. That's when you

exactly what he was an people lives. We have seen him do that for Paris

Saint-Germain in the Champions League this season.

I think the gamble to pay Luis Suarez is paid off with that goal.

That's my faith in Suarez. -- to play Luis Suarez.

We are in the last minute of the first 45. The Vikings are you sure

you shall. A good position for Daniel Sturridge.

I am convinced that Suarez is not fit. He's not running and we have

seen Premier League season. That's the way we have seen him run in the

Premier League this season. Just one minute remaining in the first half.

Can England and one last charge you -- can England launched one last

Hodgson will be happy. You want Daniel Sturridge up against Godin in

the second half. Name-macro is on a booking. Lovely to see the reaction

of Oscar Tavares, a pensioner, greeting a goal for his side like

great celebrations at this tournament so far. The only one we

have seen as far as England is concerned has gone against them.

Luis Suarez with a brilliant headed goal in the family for the fourth

and fifth visit similar story was Saturday Uruguay lead against Costa

Rica. They were blown away. The half-time message for England would

have been the same as it was the other day. Disappointed but not

downhearted. They shouldn't be too downhearted. Uruguay will not be in

any great hurry about things and nor should we expect them to be.

Too intricate from the Uruguayan player. England with the throw-in.

Roy Hodgson will be thinking about substitutions. He made good

substitutions in the first game. It is one of those games where there is

not much space in midfield. He may have to go a little bit more direct.

There is a posse of Uruguayan substitutes. I think we will see

Diego Forlan at some space. The manager said that Luis Suarez would

not go the distance. Raheem Sterling went in late and left his foot in. I

don't think the referee has seen that. Parreira is not happy about

it. Raheem Sterling was lucky there. He left his footing. That he left

his foot in. They can be so. Wi-Fi for he fondled him over. This time

his story on the same player, Parreira. That's why his stories.

He's holding his head. I feel like if defenders hold their face. It was

his neck. I would just be telling him to get on with it.

It will be a corner. I judged to have just shaved the fact of Glen

Johnson has my forehead. -- I judged to have just shaved that the

Suarez with the corner kick. It nearly went in again! The second

time Suarez has tried that trick. That was almost delivered from Luis

Suarez. -- deliver it. Versus boys and Keith has, so

filthy. The that is twice the keeper has come so

is the modern coaching. It's a really good block, smoothering

tackle from Gerrard. England are up against it here. They're under the

cosh here a bit. A captain's tackle from Steven Gerrard. It needed to

be. We just look a bit ragged at the moment. They've not settled coming

going with Caceres here. Another perfect delivery. Decently defended.

You don't see that too often, completely stuffed that effort.

That's very unlike Luis Suarez, that. He normally composes himself

in those areas. I wonder if we might look at the goal-line technology

angle. Joe Hart managed to beat it away before it even touched the

line. They like showing that goal-line technology. We should have

had it in the last World Cup, when we played Oh, don't Germany. !

We've not started well the second half, at all.

Sterling will have to be quick. Welbeck was quick to beat Arevalo to

the ball. The game threatened to be stretched

for a moment or two there. Henderson is having to work hard to win it.

Couldn't do it. In goes Cavani. Misses his chance.

England collectively breathe a huge sigh of relief. At 2-0 it would

become so difficult. Watch this run from Cavani. He just runs inside

Glen Johnson. So near that. Would have been so difficult for England

to come back have been so difficult for England

to if Cavani had scored that. Should he have scored that? I think hole'

be zoint -- He'll be disappointed, a man of his character. They'll have

to find again what they had for large parts of the first half.

Claim ing a foul, tackled from behind. The referee has been

lenient. You look back at the arguably second bookable offence

from Godin in the first halfment He's been very -- first half. He has

been very lenient so far. It's only going to be a throw in.

The England bench are out there. They wanted a free kick. Just going

back to England, they look almost in disarray at the back at the moment.

They just need to concentrate. more of that from Jordan Henderson,

surging forward. Across to Rooney. Brilliant save by Muslera! Welbeck

doesn't give up on it. First second-half moment for England

fans to be out of their seats. Leighton Baines gets in a good

cross. Great composure from Wayne Rooney. The save was just as good.

Fernando Muslera down so sharply. Muslera has gone back to his goal

line. The Uruguayans showing their famous

spirit. Smallest nation at this World Cup. Smallest nation ever to

win the World Cup. Wayne Rooney still had the heart of our best

chances so far. I know he's been getting a lot of criticism. He had a

good chance in the first half. Baines will another good ball in.

Muslera with a good gather. He claims - and has support from his

defenders - that Welbeck went in unnecessarily.

The goalkeeper is rolling around there. I don't think Danny Welbeck

played that much on him. It's the second time in two minutes that

Leighton Baines has got to the biline and -- by-line and put in a

wonderful cross. He has every right to go for it. He has to go for it.

As a goalkeeper you have to expect the centre forward to come in there.

I don't think there's any need for the physios to be on. Get up and get

on with it. It was boot to left knee. But

Muslera will be OK. He's started the second half more than OK as far as

Uruguay were concerned. What a save that was. The save of the match so

far. I don't think Rooney could have done any more than what he did.

Reacted well the last couple of minutes, England, after a shaky

first five minutes of the second half.

It all started with the Jordan Henderson surging run. The two

midfield players, Gerrard and Henderson, they've sat for most of

the tournament so far. I'd like to see one of them just commit

themselves a little bit more. I notice during the halftime interval

that of all the England substitutes going through his stretching, Frank

Lampard was the most intense about it. He's warming up along with Ross

Barkley. That's going to be a free kick.

Caceres caught by Baines. And we'll see a few more cards. The yellow

card will leave the pocket a bit more now from the referee. It's only

a matter of time before an England player gets his name taken at this

rate. I think he had every right to go for the ball there. He just

pulled away at the final minute. This is what England don't want,

they can't let the game slow down. We need to keep the tempo high.

Uruguay will want the game to be stop-start now for the second half.

England throw-in. I have the distinct feeling that the players on

the field might not be all friends at the end of this.

When you play against Uruguay, it's so competitive out there. You'd like

to see England get another midfield player in there. That's not a

tackle, that's an assault. Gimenez all over Wayne Rooney.

I think the referee has got to get a grip here. That's an on remember

does challenge, knee in the back. -- that's an horrendous challenge, knee

in the back. A nice burst of pace and Muslera

read the bounce. He gathered it nicely. The keeper handled that

well. Both keepers have handled the ball well so far. We've not seen

them punch anything. They've collected it well. Again it was

Jordan Henderson breaking forward. A really good ball from Gimenez.

Suarez in a foot race with Cahill. Behind for a goal kick.

Raheem Sterling there has had a quiet evening tonight. When you make

your mark early on, you become a marked man. It's something he has to

learn to handle. It's an England throw-in.

Uruguay are not happy with Sterling hitting the deck like that.

He's trodden on the foot of Lodeiro. Lodeiro has pulled out of the tackle

there. Once he beat the two defenders, that's was the time to

put the ball in the box. Pereira has been down more than most is down and

looking seriously hurt here. There is a real issue with him. He's

not out cold. Question see he's talking. He's down and he gets the

knee of Sterling, ouch. He has every right to be down on the floor here.

That's a sore one. He looks out for the count there.

And Sterling's knee too. I think it was totally accidentsal.

He did so well to beat Cavani. The second challenge, it was definitely

the knee accidentally into the head of Pereira. He's been helped to his

feet. I think he will be OK to continue. No, maybe not. Oh, no,

he's saying to the doctor, "I want to continue." The team doctor is

having none of it. Pereira is not going to go quietly. I saw this

earlier on in the season with the Tottenham goalkeeper. Yes, he
