England v New Zealand Match of the Day

This progam is captioned live. England 1-1 draw against Mexico in

her opening match made today's game against his Zealand a must-win. A

huge match for Hope Powell and Joe Potter and Martin Keown are with us.

They are with us for this one. This is how Group D looked ahead of the

Wellcome, everyone, to England's second game of their 2011 World Cup

She will want her first touch to be a good one. She gets it from Alex

Scott. Scot missed kicks it. New Zealand are able to get the ball

away. Hearn will give chase. Bardsley has it under control. A

good clearance from the England keeper. Aluko got a bit of flag

after the first game but Karen Bardsley's goalkeeping was also

questioned after that shot that flew in from 35 yards in the Mexico

game. In the official report it was said to be an unstoppable shot that

gave the keeper no chance. Yes, she gave a good performance in the rest

of the game. She is a confident young woman so she will be having

no worries. Scot could not climb high enough. Percival tidies up.

Rachel Yankey. Taking on personal. Uninteresting jaw so far. Now

Yankey is ahead on points. Yankey's 4 in and it is turned behind by

Smith. Good work from Yankey. It was quite a good ball in. Any touch

could have resulted in a gold. good delivery. -- a goal. It is a

long way down. A little bit... she got something to it but not on

target. Just not enough. Good defending, just leaning into Jill

John Herdman looks pretty relaxed. He is a pretty relaxed guy, from

what I know. Their free kick to England. Unitt to take -- a free

kick. Just trying to work it out between them. Plenty of height on

both teams. White getting to it. Kelly Smith commits the foul, but

she has come out of it hurting more. Maybe she landed funny. obviously

in some pain. She would be the last person they could do without,

record scorer, 33 international goals but none in her last five

full internationals now. That is a painful one. Thought about

challenging with the keeper and she has landed on maybe her right

foot... you can see there. She twisted it. Those kind of injuries

can be walked off, but they can also be serious and she could be

struggling to carry on. Smith. Interception from Yankey, who goes

in again. England has for this time. It is looking more encouraging. --

England's. She will certainly give it a go. -- England's ball. She

makes her way gingerly back to the action. Rebecca Smith... and that

will not trouble Karen Bardsley in goal at all. Ellen White making the

most of the New Zealand estate. Kelly Smith is with her. Trying to

go for goal but was well police. It will be an England corner but it

could have been so much more -- well policed. Making a nuisance of

herself. She was trying to get it on to her right foot but good

defending to get close to her in the end. Forcing the corner. But

that is good play, something out of nothing. This last little bit

needed to be a bit more incisive but good defending. Alex Scott.

second attempt held it. Fara Williams does like a shot. Either

foot as well, great strike, on target. The keeper dealt with it OK.

Mel C is here supporting the group. That is good to see. Quite a lot of

the younger members of the squad did not know who she was, that

makes me feel old. Don't know who else he is? What is the matter with

you. Aluko will chase it. Aluko squares it. Good played by Aluko

there. Did not get enough of an angle on it -- good play.

Number Ten has done well to nick the ball away. Now Hassett. Took a

risk going in like that. She lost the ball. If she had gone down in

the penalty box that would have been a penalty. People always say

the women's game is full of play acting but if she had gone down

there it would have been a penalty from where the referee was.

American born and bred but has a lot of family in Stockport. Again,

They tried to stir up the pace, a chance... New Zealand take the lead.

Disaster for England. Once again the noise of the crowd tells you

that they have got the German support in Dresden. John Herdman

gets to his feet and a New Zealand are in front. It was a great ball

just behind Fay White and they good run by Amber Hearn. What a great

run and a great ball. Fay White thought the keeper was going to

come for it. I don't know whether... that has got to be a clearance by a

centre-half, surely. Fay White will be looking at that and you will

think you have got to get your foot around that. To get in between the

two centre-halves, and get first to the ball, England will not be happy

about that. It was 211 but she got the touch. It is only New Zealand's

third ever strike in eight World Cup finals games. -- 211. England

have it all too. -- 211 -- two on one. Kelly Smith again in the wars.

But is a nasty one. That is not a good challenge. -- if that is a

nasty one. A good job she did not put more weight on that otherwise

that would have been a bad injury. -- that is a nasty one. That is a

minimum yellow card. The referee should have seen that, you can't go

in at knee height. Aluko. Jill Scott. Got her head up and spotted

the run of Williams. Jenny Bindon's dive was just for insurance, it was

always going wide but it was struck with a bit of venom from the

Everton midfielder. She is a beautiful striker of the ball, Fara

Williams, and there is always a chance she can produce from that

distance but she just put it a bit wide. Kelly Smith, well-controlled.

Keeps it, against the odds. Kelly Smith's ball across and it is just

stabbed behind by Erceg. Kenny Smith's brightest spark so far in

this World Cup. Good defending but this is where we want her on the

ball, this is where she can be creative and perhaps get a penalty.

She did well to get the ball across. Hope Powell has a lot on her mind

right now. That his great work and they -- that's great work and they

could try. Rachel Yankey at her best -- that's great work and a

Yankey. Can't get through. It is Gregorius or New Zealand... just

lost their bearings and Rachel Unitt comes back in with a vital

tackle. 2-0 would have been big trouble. A great run to get on the

right side of Unitt. It was strong, certainly nothing wrong with it.

Aluko, ghosts away from Perceval and there is a really clever ball.

Kelly Smith, deflected but not a kind deflection for England and it

is simple enough for Jenny Bindon, he was ready for it. The defection

wasn't kind and it did actually take it away from airing what. --

Her time to shine. Kelly Smith goes for it... Jenny Grindon knew it was

going wide. Not many in the stadium did. I was wondering why the New

Zealand defenders were not closing her down. Kick deflected off Smith

is coming on. Formerly of Leeds, now of Lincoln ladies. Played a

prominent part in World Cup qualifying. I think that chess will

feel unlucky that she has not started a game yet -- Jess.

Carney's ball in, White was trying to put it back. Not quite sure

where the goal was. Amber Hearn shaping to strike. Blocked by Fay

White. Tentative Rachel units charged down by Riley. The ball is

in and it is miskick by Rosie White. Not sure New Zealand will get a

right touch. Thankfully for England it fell to somebody who has only

just got on the pitch. Hope Powell needs a winner from somewhere. A

shot from distance nearly resulted in another chance for Moore would.

Bridge challenge again. -- greets challenge again. -- Moore what.

Khrin challenge. -- great challenge. Smith, Carney, New Zealand appeal

for offside and there goes the whistle. Karen Carney is

disappointed she did not get the ball a little bit earlier. It

looked like Smith was in two minds and in the end she held on to it

for a bit too long. Scott was offside as well. Just a little bit

before that, either way, left or right, would have resulted in an

opportunity. Was Alex Scott active? It might not matter for England

because they are coming forward again with Jill Scott. She has got

it in, a chance for White but saved by Bindon. Jess Clarke shows that

in. England sense this is their time to take that lead -- goes back

in. Bindon, she hasn't got there. Jill Scott is taking her time. Jess

Clarke! 2-1! A rocket into the roof from Jess Clarke. It is all smiles,

England again. Brilliant. I thought they messed it up between them in

the penalty box but then she smashes it into the roof of the net.

What a great ball, causes confusion in the box. What a finish that was,

I am so pleased for Jess Clarke. Probably the best moment of her

career so far, excellent. 2-1, get in! She met that absolutely

perfectly. Substitute, Jess Clarke, off the bench to put England in

front and the whole complexion of the game and this World Cup from an

England point of view has just changed massively. Sophie Bradley

is coming on for her second substitute appearance of this World

Cup. Same change as the last match. The arm band goes to Casey Stoney,

centre-back to centre-back. I know so the Bradley is a good player but

at this stage, it is a big ask for a young player to come on as a

centre-half -- Sophie Bradley. Even though she is a great player.

much respect between coach and captain. Hope Powell is respecting

her captain. But five minutes left, things can certainly changed.

through again. -- of course it was. Fara Williams, a good save from

Bindon. Welburn keeper. -- Well done keeper. It was low, just right,

but good goalkeeping. She actually plays men's football in New Zealand.

She plays with her husband. Three minutes of injury time just about

up. New Zealand 1-2 England and the celebrations from Fara Williams and

the heart tells you that the full- time whistle has gone. -- the

Harvin. England are back up and fighting at the World Cup in 2011.

It is a lovely reaction from both coaches. Hope Powell will be

relieved and John Herdman, who is trying to cover up his desperate

disappointment. I think England should be seen as fighters today

because they have had to scrap. They have had to show all kinds of

character in this game. From playing not very well to then being

two goals up. The young players coming in have done extremely well

as well. New Zealand are a tough team to beat and they have shown

that they can beat teams and they are capable of competing at this

level. On to Japan on Tuesday. I really do hope that you will join

us for that and hopefully see England continue through to the

quarterfinals. They have done it the hard way again but England's

women have done it. New Zealand 1-2 Congratulations on a very hard-

fought win. Were you always confident you would turn it around?

We were. We just enjoy making these sorts of tournaments hard work. We

have to give credit to New Zealand. They really put us on the back foot

and we struggled in the first half. I think we had a few opportunities,

most of the play, and sheer determination got us the goals and

we got three points. But it is never easy. You came on and you

turned the World Cup and the game for England question below I don't

know about that. I just came on and did my job. --?. It was a squad

effort today. You need many things to win a World Cup but you showed

character today? Especially today when we were one goal down and we

were disappointed with the first game. We needed to show character

and we stepped up. That is the sign of a good team. You were moving

further forward in the second half giving England more? Hope Powell

told me to get into the box more for the crosses. I was lucky to get

my head on the end of at. Jess Clarke was delighted, you were

delighted, it really turned everything around. We are not

England if we do not do things the hard way and Jess coming in make

things different, a great goal. Were you confident England were

going to turn it around when you came on? Hopefully it was going to

come. It was fantastic that we got the win, like I said. Hope said the

team had not played too well so far, you have got the result now, why

have England failed to click? can't really say what it is but

like you say we got off to a rocky start. This will give us more

confidence going into the next game. Going into the final game in terms

of qualification, the pressure is virtually off so will you be more

relaxed? We will still want to win. The goalless draw against Mexico

was disappointing but we always want to win every game. All of our

planning and preparation will be to beat Japan and hopefully we will.

Sometimes it is not going your way you have got to work on your heart

and passion and everybody showed that today. Really pleased. Is this

the kind of performance that can give you confidence through the

tournament? We are still not out of bed, there is more to come. The

fact that we have got a win means we will relax a bit more. We know

we are supposed to get out of this group, we are not quite there yet,

a bit to do. But it is tough, we need to relax. We told you would be

all right on the night. Jess Clarke's goal leaving England very

close to qualification for the quarterfinals and eliminating New

Nonetheless they have this huge opportunity, barring a disaster,

they are there. Second half was much better, higher tempo. The

manager makes the necessary changes that we were asking for, Aluko

coming off and Carney coming on and now they play with more energy. A

bit more extra quality with Smith further up and it was a matter of

time. Jill Scott should get credit, she was inspirational in the

midfield. She got the first goal but she wanted to get forward.

Suddenly there were bodies in the final third. Everybody played their

part in the second half and they can be very proud. She made the

changes. Jess Clarke was one of the players brought on and when she

came on you said she is really fit and has so much energy and she gave

that extra zest? It was just what they needed. Both her and Karen,

lively players, both like to get forward and very positive and it

really made a difference in the second half. Looking at the story

of the game with Gregorius of New Zealand, who gave them the lead in

the first-half scoring seven goals in qualifying. She was their most

dangerous player. You can see why. She is going to cash in on any

opportunity. Sloppy defending, we need to work on this. But as Orca

goalscorers are, in the right place at the right time. -- as good

goalscorers are. You can't show your number, your back, to your

opponent. She has not even looked at her once there. She thinks it is

dealt with and then the ball has come inside her and she has been

undone. As a forward player you would say try and get in between

full-back and centre-half and she has done really well to score. Jill

Scott, of all the players that we were focusing on at half-time,

looking at their tenacity and Endeavour. Jill Scott, she'll work,

getting herself in the right position. -- here were. She reminds

the of Fellaini for Everton. Uncompromising, good technique and

she wants to get in the box. You see that Endeavour in the build-up.

One of her biggest assets is her work rate and she will get box to

box all day long. She is quite deep and in the second half, her and

Fara Williams started to push on. She is so much higher. She made a

great run into the box and a great header. It is a difficult cross,

she is right at the maximum. You think the defender has got her but

she is so tall and she climbs so well. She looks like Andy Carroll

the way she puts that into the back of the net, just like ours. At that

point it is 1-1. We are breathing a bit they easier. If it was a draw

it would make the qualification difficult to navigate. Did you

think a winner was coming? You felt it was a matter of time. There was

a lot of panic with New Zealand, there were opportunities, there

were offsides and it got very difficult for New Zealand. And Jess

Clarke, a girl you said could make a difference. She came on and made

the energy difference in the game. She kept calm and managed to stick

it in the top corner. All credit to her. She doesn't panic. She puts it

right in her path, and then go on, put that in. She needed to stay

calm and that is exactly what she did. Just the sort of chance that

you want when you come off the bench. The goal will look massive

there and she certainly enjoyed it. We read out some tweets about

people criticising Hope Powell for selection but credit where Credit's

due. She didn't panic and she made the necessary changes. Interesting

to see after this match what she has learnt and what will be her

best 11 next time. Dare I say brave enough or whether she feel it is

time to start with those players against Japan? Carney has to be in

the team for me. I think Yankey will probably start because she

came off after 70 minutes. She gave a decent account. It is the overall

our performance. Let's have a look at some of New Zealand's chances.

They were not sitting on 1-0. They have some good chances. They did.

When they pick the ball up they do like to go forward. That is a great

ball but a great bit of defending. That is Gregorius, she likes to

cause defenders problems. She did really well and really positive.

This is the start of the second half, Hearn for New Zealand. They

get another lucky deflection. Looking at central defenders. Fay

White does not know where the centre-forward is. We really get

out of jail again. We do look pretty static at the back at times.

Once it goes wide, make sure you pick up in the box and deal with

the danger. England have their own chances. When they look back at

this and they analyse this game, there was perhaps a lot more than

against Mexico to be pleased with. Definitely, looking back at the

Mexico chances we had and today's game, it was a lot more positive

and that proved in the second chance with how many chances we had.

Kelly picks the ball up in between defence and midfield. Great energy

and great drive, just the final product. As we go on, we are

getting more and more confident. like to see Kelly running with the

ball. It is a long way from goal. Good defending that stops her there.

She has got plenty to offer. You can see Gill getting on the end of

things there. You need more conviction from White with her

finishing. She works hard but she needs to improve that. Again,

energy from midfield with Fara Williams. An outstanding save here.

Looking at this, she is still on side there. It is so close that I

am not sure the linesman can be certain. This one she is definitely

onside. It is not the player at the top of your screen it is the one

there that gets the ball. She was very unlucky there. Some New

Zealand tackles that were rather fierce and they were somewhat

overlooked by the referee. Were they are lucky? I wish this referee

was officiating when I was playing because some of the tackles... I

felt sorry for Kelly Smith. I think that is Hoyle. I can't believe she

did not get booked. Another one on Yankey. Write down the back of her.

They know exactly what they are doing and it is frustrating. Very

physical. They know who to go for and they went straight with Kelly

and Rachel. And Karen Carney when she came on. They know how to

frustrate us. Everton Ladies tweets, "What do they have to do to get a

yellow card in this game?". The officiating so far has been a bit

suspect in parts. The first time they have gone for all female

officials, there is a tendency to back off? Interesting to see what

the first day. They have been very friendly and very fair but looking

back at that game... England went on to win the game but they were

trying to disrupt England, New Zealand. As the tournament

progresses, later on the best of the referees should stay with it so

it should improve. It should give them great confidence. Getting a

draw against Japan would be great securing our passage through to the

quarterfinals but building the tournament game is the idea, it is

not a sprint. That is the main thing they will take from today.

They grew into the game. Second half they came out, performed, got

more confidence and they managed to get a result and they will be over

the moon. They never looked like they were panicking? When they go

back to the camp and you are away from your families, you have got

that feel-good factor. They can enjoy this victory, they know what

is ahead of them and they can be very pleased. Thank you for joining
