Chelsea 's title defence started with a shock as they were beaten at

home by Burnley and Sam Vokes will hopefully join as a little later on.

Huddersfield have a dream start to life in the Premier League with a

3-0 win at Crystal Palace. Newcastle's return to the top

flight begins at home. We will be at St

James' Park shortly. And we will also look ahead

to today's four o'clock kick-off with Manchester United playing

Michail's West Ham. Antonio Conte appears

on nearly all the back pages. The Sun - "Blue Lost Plot"

with Antonio Conte accusing his I'm laughing at the ridiculous

nature that Antonio Conte is the bookmakers favourite to be the first

managerial casualty of the season. Antonio Conte target signings

after Chelsea's disastrous start. Danny Drinkwater and Virgil van Dijk

are two of the players named. Michail, you're not at Old Trafford

because you are not quite fit, but your not far from 100%. Yes, I'm not

far. I trained with the first team this week. I managed to play on

Friday. So I should be available for selection mixed week if I am

selected. You just said to us you asked to play for the under 23s

because there is a difference between feeling fit and finding out

whether you are match fit, so explain that a little bit. Yeah,

definitely, like, you can run all you like in pre-season but the

preseason games is where you really learn the fitness of changing

direction, sprinting, because the way I play, I run the ball for 60

yards and can rest for three minutes and get the ball back and go running

again, so it's not practical. I can't planet. It's just reaction

type of thing. I possibly could have tried to be in this weekend but

being able to play an actual game, and no mentally myself to be

selected for next week, if I am selected, that I could play and

start. -- plan it. This amuses me slightly a Simon Hughes not an

athlete, you may find that hard to believe, having a little giggle to

yourself, you are at Saint April. Is that the summer getting back to

fitness to such an extent you took your physio on your stag do with

you? Did that work? Yes, I am back on time.

LAUGHTER During the summer, obviously, I did

my hamstring. I had to get myself prepared for the summer. I just had

to keep working. During this time, obviously going to get married. I've

had to go to Vegas. Fraser is a very lucky man to come to Vegas. All paid

for. He did sessions with you out there? Literally, every morning...

What type of sessions? Not a drinking sessions. I've had to make

some sacrifices. He managed to get me to do that. He got a nice holiday

to Vegas. Yeah, so, he was out there. He got me back on time, maybe

earlier. Widget taken a physio on your stag do? Only if he had good

banter. He was part of the boys. I liked him. We had a little squad and

he was leading the squad. He should have stayed. Let's move on to talk

about the actual football from the opening Premier League weekend. We

will come on to Old Trafford, West Ham, later on. I did laugh at the

Mail on Sunday's back page headline and the bookies having Antonio Conte

to be favourite to be the first manager to lose his job. Can you

understand why he is the favourite? Yes, I can. It does seem crazy,

incredible, one defeat and suddenly he's the favourite to lose his job,

but this is a hangover from the last season, he was not happy. He toured

with inter-Milan, substantial, and fathers on the table and he could've

gone. He signed a new contract on better terms but not an extended

deal. Without the ongoing problems with transfers. And also Diego

Costa. I think it has hurt him. Living out of the squad, in January,

keeping him until they won the league. I think that text message he

sent has damaged his standing at the club because I have a player there

who is a devalued asset, he wrote have the money they thought they

would get for him. He hasn't got the players he wanted in the transfer

window, but on the bench yesterday, the board players. They have players

who have not been fit. Two or three players coming in. May simply does

not lie with him. I've had my fallouts with Chelsea over the

years. A number of managerial changes. I think this is more about

him and his behaviour rather than the club. I agree with Jason. The

rumblings throughout the summer is now coming to affect, and it's

affecting Antonio Conte, the way he's responding and reacting,

politically after the game when he is saying the players lost the plot.

Normally a manager who has the full support of his team, would not come

out and defend his players. In this instance, he hasn't. It seems like

it's a very unhappy camper the moment. I thought was very

confusing. He came on and change the game, Morata. Him on the bench was

quite strange. Obviously, Lukaku was his first choice. But Morata was not

foisted upon him. Be for the Lukaku tour, he was talking about Morata

into Chelsea. They've done a good deal. He didn't play him in

pre-season either. I think he is his man. Our understanding was that this

was a player who went to Juventus. Obviously he's not a player who's

been foisted upon him. To be fair, Chelsea are not foisting players

upon him. It's not with possible to get the players you want. Everybody

talks about Bennuci, not wanting to leave Italy. They talk about him not

wanting Matic to go but he didn't want to go to Manchester United.

That the difference. When you talk the text message damaging him,

telling a player is not wanted, are you saying it's damaged him within

Chelsea? Within the hierarchy. Yes, within the club. I think he handled

it very well initially. They won the game at Leicester, went on to win

the league, it he got Diego Costa back on track and it worked.

Subsequent to that, it's been handled badly and I think him

involving himself in sending this message was unnecessary. There's

talk about legal action against Chelsea. It's become a very messy

situation. The player sitting on a beach in Brazil. It's just going on

and on and on. He was working in a circus. If you weren't wanted by a

club, what is the right way to go about it? If you are not wanted by

the manager... OK, but... It's difficult. The club are backing him

but there's a difference. The club would like him to stay. It's

difficult because the manager obviously excellent team so if

you're not going to get games come you obviously don't want to leave,.

So if the management doesn't want you, you won't play games and things

like that but it's difficult. He was top of the squad last year. It

surprisingly wants to give it him. Obviously, his attitude might be the

cause of it, but top scorer. But he wants to go and that's fine but they

got to get the deal done so therefore, the head coach involving

himself more in these messages doesn't help because he views that

ammunition against him. One final question on Chelsea and then we will

talk to Sam Vokes. Chelsea is all over the back pages of the moment.

They didn't have a great start last season either and didn't get

themselves going until September. It really isn't that big a deal after

one game. It shouldn't be but the circumstances leading up to the

game, the off-season, last season, the whole Diego Costa situation, it

hasn't been dealt with that well but Italy by Antonio Conte. He wants to

leave and he wants to go to Atletico Madrid but unfortunately for him,

there's no way he can go there because of a transfer embargo. Under

normal circumstances, they would just say it was a bad day but

circumstances, red cards, but, in this case, because of what has gone

on, behind-the-scenes, people will speculate. Not his fault, the way

the club is run, not giving the players he wants. Chelsea have to

take that positive despite having been 3-0 down, they shared the

determination to come back, give them credit. You've got to get

barely credit for their performance yesterday for that we have not done

that yet. We will do it for the next five minutes for talking to Sam

Vokes. Sam Vokes, who scored

two of Burnley's goals, Yes. You don't have an impatient

group behind you, do you? Not quite. It's very nice idea. Thank you to

talking to us. Chelsea were down to nine men, but you played very well,

despite that. Arguably, had great control of the game until Morata

came on. Yes, 11 men. We gave a good account of ourselves throughout the

game. We managed the game well. Would you say that, I don't know if

we lost connection there but hopefully you are still there, is

the club settled on and off the pitch, and even if your big players

go, whether it be Andre Gray, not a great deal of noise comes out of

Burnley and the wheels just keep on turning? Yes, I think you are right

there. The gaffer has got the lads working and everyone knows their

jobs within the camp. So it's like players moving on. Players come into

the team straightaway know their job. Know how we work. It's been

like that for a few years now. I think with the performance yesterday

you can see that. Did you go to the game with a lot of confidence,

knowing the speculation on Antonio Conte on the summer, the lack of

movement with transfer windows for Chelsea, did you go there thinking

you were going to get out the game? Yes, I think so. The gaffer

mentioned before the game yesterday, a lot of noise coming out of

Chelsea. For us to not get distracted by that. The first game

of the season, what we've been building up to in pre-season for

five or six weeks and we're looking forward to it. We were just

concentrating going into that game. To give a good account of ourselves.

I spoke to your manager yesterday after the game and that strange

thing that happens when you are in a team and you are playing nine men

and yet you feel the crowd and the impetus with the opposition and, on

one hand, you are telling yourself it is 11 against nine but, at the

same time, you feel like you are being overwhelmed. It must be a very

odd feeling? Yes, it is a strange feeling, especially away from home.

The crowd were behind them, obviously. It is sometimes harder to

break down. And I think the way we went about it, especially when they

went down to ten men, they moved the ball very well. I think that is

where the goals came from, really. We kept moving side to side. Your

eyes must have lit up when the cross came in for your second goal? Yes, a

striker's dream. A short free kick. Stephen put a great ball in. I'm a

striker who loves to go and attack. Wasn't a fluke? -- was it a fluke?

No, I remember when he came from Simona Baumrtova. He did it. How was

the golf going? Is it going all right? Not too bad. My partner is

actually a Chelsea fan. I'm surprised he turned up for the game

There was a point, Jason, yesterday, when a lot of people said you look

at Burnley's bench and it was stronger than Chelsea's bench. I

want to focus on that a little bit because it is a very well built

balanced squad by Sean Dyche regardless of whether he this won

yesterday? He's done some good business this summer. People talking

about Gray. You forget the January window and last summer, he's been

building over time, bringing in players. I think he's anticipated

some of these things happening. The money for Gray's very good. Michael

Keane, he knew for a long time he was going to leave. He has been

planning for this. You look and think they don't look quite as

strong as they did. I wouldn't discount them. The key yesterday was

they won away from home which they weren't doing. Suddenly, they got a

good away win. Do you think Sean Dyche is one of the most underrated

managers in the league? Crystal Palace, Sam Allardyce goes and Daesh

would be the obvious replacement for that move. I don't think he was ever

in the frame. He seems to be, maybe it's perception, that gruff voice,

the goatee or the shaved head, there's a perception can he really

do any better than he's doing. Well, actually, he's done brilliantly. You

could argue that with the players he brings in. He brings in good solid,

dependable, I mean this as a compliment, professionals. Jack Cork

was excellent yesterday. Really experienced Premier League

midfielder who he has brought in for very little fuss. Robbie Brady in

the January transfer window. They probably need another goal scorer to

help Vokes out? Definitely. They need to bring somebody in to replace

Andre Gray. He has his backroom staff looking around. They have to

bring someone in. What a win. Great start to the season. Built up a lot

of confidence for the next game. Anything can happen from here. Paul

says, remember, there were two teams playing, the Clarets ever bit as

good tactically as Chelsea weren't. Hopefully that's balanced it up for

you, Paul. Let's go to St James's Park. On 5 live at 1.30, we'll bring

you commentary for Newcastle against Spurs. Sell-out here at St James'

Park. Beautiful sunshine. Newcastle United against Tottenham with Chris

Waddle who know as lot about these two teams. You're summarising on 5

live sport this afternoon. We'll talk about the teams in a minute.

The atmosphere here will be rocking? Sold out. Lot of expectations for

both teams. For Newcastle, if they're realistic, it is about

survival, making sure they stay in the division. For Tottenham, second

or third. They will he they will be looking for this year to win it. It

is not at White Hart lane but it's all about today. A lot of people

saying on form Tottenham should win this game. Experience at this level.

Always in the top four at the minute. But, as we saw in the

results yesterday, some things can happen. Newcastle will be looking to

get off to a good start. They need to stay in this division. The mood

hasn't been good with the lack of summer spending at Newcastle. That

should be different once they get on the pitch? The worst thing is they

go down in the first 10 or 15 mins. That would be ideal for Tottenham.

This crowd will get behind them Rafa has a good record against Tottenham.

If you look at #3w09 sides, Tottenham are a stronger side. It is

90 minutes and anything can happen. . Tottenham depleted with options.

Their summer's not been great. Not much noise around White Hart lane?

Over the weekend a couple of rumours about a couple of players. One

fromage axe. Tottenham will do business in the next couple of

weeks. When you look at the squad Tottenham has, it is a very tasty

squad. If he can keep everybody fit, they'll be knocking on the door

again. Rafa's still here. That's great for Newcastle. The fans adore

him. They'll have to support it and keep behind the side. He's probably

hoping to survive and get on his hands and knees and plead for some

money. May 2016? They Gotrel gated that day. Their heads were down

after Leicester won the league. I don't think we'll get that today.

Chris Waddle knows all about Newcastle and Tottenham. 5 live

sports commentator from 1.30 I know it's only the opening game of the

season, we've spoken about Chelsea and don't want to go overboard too

soon. Is this a big game for both of them given how the summer's gone? I

think so. We all know what's gone on with Tottenham. Roast coming out

talking about lack of money, investment in the team. He's

basically said what everyone's thinking. With Newcastle, Benitez

has been vocal about the lack of moment in the transfer window. At

the end of last season he said they wanted to compete in the top half of

the table. He hasn't been given those funds. Now back to St James'

Park for the team news. Plenty of new faces. What is interesting,

they've replaced Kyle Walker with Kyle Walker Pieters. Young player

making his Tottenham debut. Convenient for any players who've

kept the jeersaway from last season. Dwight Gayle, 23 goals in the

championship last season, he starts. Big injury doubt. Didn't play in the

last warm-up game, friendly pre-season. He is fit to start this

game. Manquillo who was at Sunderland on loan last season makes

his debut. Lejeune also starts in the back four. For Tottenham, the

team you'd expect can Keane, Dembele. With Trippier injured, it's

Kyle Walker Pieters who starts for Tottenham. Let's deal with Spurs

first. Back to Newcastle in a little while. On 5 live yesterday, we had a

fan phone in. He wanted to be billed as an optimistic Spurs fan. He felt

they were being written off when they haven't done a great deal wrong

during the summer bar not signing anybody. As I said yesterday, if it

isn't broke, why are you looking to fix it? Pa it is bringing fresh

faces. People to challenge other people that are in the positions

already. So people in the positions are not comfortable. They are

expected to play because of who they are. So, when these other players

come in, they're challenging for she is spots because they've been bout

and the owner's spent the money. They will be playing well, training

hard and trying to get in the positions those bows are in. Because

it is the exact same team, you can pick the front four, you can pick

nine of Tottenham's players before... Do you feel, I know you

don't want to play right back, do you feel Zabaleta comes into West

Ham, great, a challenge and at training as well or around out

Veitch? I like the around out Veitch shout more! He comes in and you're

thinking, great, a challenge, something different in training.

Seriously. He's come in and he's a quality player. Established in the

Premier League. I know I've got to be, when I'm playing, I've got to be

on top form. If I don't, then, he's another quality player there who can

take my place. Or there's other players like figurualy who are

always challenging for my spot. If I don't play well, I have to stay on

my toes and play well and I stay in my position. With Spurs, you're

wondering, are people expecting them to just embellish the squad a bit,

make it a bit bigger? It's more like, they're so close. Every year

they're so close. Doingle with, doing well, at the end, they're

always starting to fall off. It is about having more in the squad so

when injuries happen or when people are starting to fall off their

performances, they've got another person to freshen it up, make it

better. I think they will sign three before the end of the window. I

think, actually, Pochettino's not had one word of complaint. That

indicates people are more confident than people are about Tottenham. I

may live to regret this, I think they'll have a good season. Will be

fine. Bring in two or three players. They've kept hold of everyone they

want to. Continue bringing in... They were willing to sell Kyle

Walker. I think they're not going to get sucked into playing the, ma.

Some clubs have, some haven't. They're holding their nerve. I

understand the discontent. Maybe I'm being a bit optimistic. Look at that

first 11, still incredibly strong. I take Michail's point, you need to

get 13, 14, 15 stronger to put the pressure on. That's very hard. I

think they'll bring two or three players challenging for first team

places. The first 11 are the best in the league. No doubting that. It is

what they need to add to the squad. More depth. They need also another

player or two that is of a similar if not better quality than some of

the players in their team. Again, like we were talking about. It

raises the bar. It challenges people. You want people to be

outside their comfor the zone. Go to another level. Continually improve.

At the moment, the improvement is through the manager. And players

gaining experience. It only takes you so far. You need that extra camp

tugs. Could they have got... Forget he might have wanted to go to

Chelsea or this that and the other, hypothetically, could they have gone

for Morata? They did but he didn't want to go there? Why? Because he

couldn't get in ahead of Cain? That's what Pochettino says. If

you're a centre half there, you think you won't get in? You hope

you'd back yourselves over the season. Dyer wants to play midfield.

Centre back is different. Harry Cain is an interesting problem going

there as a striker. He'll play. Maybe they'll change the system up.

As a professional, you have to back yourself. You can't stunt yourself

feeling you're not going to play. Have you to take that step doored

and believe in your ability. Last season, Harry Kane was out injured.

They really did miss him. They covered the gaps and cracks. Dele

Alli stepped in and scored goals. You can't continuously do that. If

they are competitive on all fronts they need more quality quality. If

they bring in Sanchez or Ross Barkley, that's two players. One

more on top of that and losing Kyle Walker. Suddenly, it looks

different. As far as Newcastle or concerned, can you understand Rafa

been the he's frustrations over the summer? Yes, because of where he's

been in the past. The clubs he's worked with. The funds he's always

had available. I thought first and foremost, it was a real strange

decision for him to go to Newcastle. Even though Newcastle's a massive

club, but it's been a club that's never really fulfilled his

potential. When he went there, I think it was an eyebrow lifter. I

think he stayed in the championship on the prove eyes owe, you get us

back up, we will back you and get a very competitive side in the Premier

League but that just hasn't happened. I think it's fantastic he

went there. He stayed there. Are you surprised he's still there? No, not

really. I think Rafa's being Rafa. That that he is a not necessarily a

criticism. I think he's pushing. He doesn't want to come back in the

Premier League through the relegation zone. He wants to go back

and compete. What was interesting last week, Mike Ashley said Rafa has

the final say, I'm not a multi-bibillionaire with money

veilage. He put the pressure back on the manager. There were dealings

they didn't close. Caballero going to Chelsea instead of Newcastle.

Deals could have been done that Rafa's frustrated about. I think he

will stay. This constant rumbling will continue. There's an argue

automatic, Mikhail, I don't want you getting loads of stick from

Newcastle fans, as big as Newcastle are, they are huge as I have, big

club, one club city, they are a promoter club. If they're going

head-to-head for Ake or whoever, Bournemouth and Swansea are more

established Premier League clubs than Newcastle at the moment? I

would say myself, between Swansea, Bournemouth and Newcastle,

Newcastle's very likely the biggest club out of the three of them. For

me, personally, if those three clubs you were coming in for me, I would

more likely sway to Newcastle more than Bournemouth or Swansea.

Newcastle is more of a bigger club. If they had the ambition, I believe

if they had more of the drive and more of a talk with the players, I

think other players will be in the same opinion as me. There has to be

something else, the reason why other teams got them over Newcastle.

You'll get lots of love from Newcastle and I'll get the stick.

Philippe Coutinho just one. Alan Shearer said on Match of the Day

last night that Liverpool have to sell him. What was amazing yesterday

was the number of players linked with moves away whether van Dyke,

Sigurdsson, Coutinho. An she. Danny Drinkwater. Amazing how many

niggles, strains, viruses are picked up.

It's not a coincidence! LAUGHTER

No, you can read into it however you choose to read into it. I would like

to think everybody has got legitimate injuries. You know the

ins and outs of football and people do what they have to do. Coutinho is

a phenomenal player. Clearly he wants to leave. He's had a transfer

request, they rejected it, Jurgen Klopp has been diplomatic in the

sense that he said the owners of that no, we have wanted to keep him

so he is posted onto their side and said, I'm the manager, I have 23

other players to look after. He is one of them as well but I need to do

with everyone. The club have made that decision. The club want to keep

him because he's a world-class player but when a player like

Coutinho is being chased by Barcelona, it's difficult for him to

stay. He can't turn down Barcelona. He's made it very clear he hasn't.

As a player, you can't turn down Barcelona. If they come knocking,

you go. I feel Liverpool is doing the right thing for the club.

Because he is basically their best player, he makes things happen from

nothing. And, standing their ground, then again, would you want a

player... Last season, you had a player who wants to leave and the

clubs that no, so you know what it's like in that environment when a

player is turned and he doesn't want to stay. I'm not saying Coutinho

will do the same thing, but that the issue. Did it affect your dressing

room? I believe, as a player, I think the club should let him go

because his head has been turned. And the effect it has on the group,

on the player himself. He's never going to be the exact same player

because his body and mind is no longer at Liverpool. You've got to

let him go because is not going to be the same player that he was. I

think he thinks he has professionally behaved well until

this point and this is an offer so large and big Liverpool can't turn

it down. I think that's why he put in a transfer request. I think, on

the other side of that, Liverpool's owners have made a statement, their

credibility is now on the line with the supporters. The problem is, if

you go so strong and say you're not selling him, and then you do sell

him, the fans won't like it. It's possibly too late in the window for

Liverpool. It's not going to happen in this window. I suspect they will

say to Coutinho, give us one more year like we did with Suarez. I'm

not sure Barcelona will come back for him next year. It could be now

or never for him so at a very difficult situation. 100 million,

its huge. How can you turn that down? The players thinking, I came

here for ?10 million. I've been good to the club, this is my moment, but

the club have got to look after themselves as well. When the owners

when so strong, it's difficult to let him go. He's been a very good

servant to the club. He has, is done well. The situation he's in now,

Barcelona have come knocking, a quality team, they always do well in

La Liga, the Champions League, it's an opportunity for him to go out and

do things. In contrast to Suarez, this might be Coutinho's only chance

to go to Barcelona. Definitely, because Barcelona need to replace

Neymar. They have to have a back-up. They are under such pressure to buy.

They've got to get Coutinho. They've got to get out there and spend some

money. This is Coutinho's chance. I don't see Barcelona coming in next

summer. I totally agree with you. Liverpool run the risk, if they

don't allow him to go, they don't get as much as they possibly can for

him, they got a disgruntled player and someone, I'm not sure what is

like as a person, but he may not put in the work. He is a shy guy, but he

won't be the same player. It's not about putting any effort. It's

mentally, he's not going to be the same player. One thing in football,

you can try your hardest, but if you are mentally not right, you're not

going to the same player. When I was at Fulham, there was talk about

Arsenal coming in for me and I was adamant I wanted to go and the club

refused to let me go and it took me three months at least to get over it

and even then I never really got over it. Did you feel resentment?

Yes. Towards anyone and everyone. It was more about, the manager as well,

and above. Definitely. They were the people who would not let me go. I

was 37 years old so it is a different situation. I was 37 and it

was the end of my career. It is similar with Coutinho in the fact it

could be his only opportunity. I don't think it's his one and only

opportunity to go to a big club but Barcelona may be. For Brazilians,

Real Madrid and Barcelona is everything for them. Can you

understand fans in general, with a lot of players, when they are

disgruntled and wanting to go, fans say, why did you sign a five-year

contract at them? LAUGHTER

Or, as a player... As a player, these other contracts basically...

It's one of those things where... You sign a contract, you sign five

years because obviously there are security unit, for the club, for the

player. It goes either way. It's not about a five-year contract. It could

be a five-year contract and they don't want you any more and you

still need to move because you're not going to play. Even though you

have signed a five-year contract, the team doesn't want you, the team

won't play you, you have to move. You've signed a five-year contract

but need to move because bigger things are calling you. The club are

in a stronger position now because he signed a long-term contract. I

know people get upset about it, particularly fans, because they are

very emotional about it that you commit to a long period of time at

the club that won a club like Barcelona comes in someone, but

there's a select few clubs who could come in for Coutinho and turn his

head and Barcelona is one of them and the club will be well rewarded

if he were to be sold. It's only certain clubs. If Man United came

in, Chelsea, Man City, I don't think he would handle a transfer request

but the fact it's Barcelona, even Real Madrid, those two clubs, they

will turn anyone. The only two clubs who would do it. Let's move on to

the 4pm. We will talk about Huddersfield before the end of the

show unless these three go on. Anyhow, Man Utd v West Ham, what is

the feeling in the squad? Very positive. Some great signings this

year, Joe Hart, Arnautovic, so going forward, we look like a threat. We

have solidified outback four. We have great experience, Arnautovic,

playing the last two years. Pablo Zabaleta has been there. Premier

League experience. That's all we needed and we got the people. To be

honest, I think we did all right last year. I'm now on the bench so I

can be called upon. We've got more of the squad as well. I trained with

them this week. I really feel positive. The boys are looking

sharp. This may seem an odd question given your home form last season,

but it'd advantage having to play so many away at the start of the season

because the stadium isn't ready because of the athletics? It's a

disadvantage because Old Trafford is a massive arena, but you are getting
