A burning flame has symbolised the Olympic Games and now a modern | :00:10. | :00:17.
flame on day 61 of its tour around the United Kingdom reaches Dover. | :00:17. | :00:22.
We are a week to go until the opening ceremony of the Olympic | :00:22. | :00:26.
Games Twitter 12. This is why they are here to see the Olympic | :00:26. | :00:33.
cauldron being let. Be -- welcome to BBC South East Today's Olympic | :00:33. | :00:43.
:00:43. | :01:21. | ||
Welcome to Dover for a damp but special edition of South East Today | :01:21. | :01:31.
:01:31. | :01:31. | ||
as the torch relay arrives in the South East. For the next half-an- | :01:31. | :01:35.
hour, we Pilbeam reaching up torch bearers and some of those people | :01:35. | :01:42.
down mad. There has been a remarkable 70 day, 1000 mile | :01:42. | :01:46.
journey to all four corners of Britain. Tonight, the flame is | :01:46. | :01:51.
reaching Dover. The atmosphere is stiff -- brilliant despite the | :01:51. | :01:57.
weather. There is anticipation here as the flame will come up Marine | :01:58. | :02:05.
Parade. The flame left Hastings and travelled through places including | :02:05. | :02:10.
Ashford and Folkestone as it made his way down to here in Deva. A | :02:10. | :02:15.
spectacular entrance it was as it came into the Western Docks aboard | :02:15. | :02:25.
:02:25. | :02:25. | ||
the tall ship -- Tall Ships. We are expecting it around 7:20pm. We are | :02:25. | :02:31.
looking forward to it. The Olympic organisers say 95% of the UK's | :02:31. | :02:36.
population will have been within 10 miles of the Olympic torch as it | :02:36. | :02:42.
comes around the whole of the country. It gets to 27th July for | :02:42. | :02:48.
the opening ceremony. Before it gets to the opening ceremony, the | :02:48. | :02:52.
crowds are going to be across Sussex and Kent and they will catch | :02:53. | :03:00.
a glimpse of the flame. Robin Gibson has a story of the events. | :03:00. | :03:06.
We will be coming to that event later. It is an extraordinary sight. | :03:06. | :03:16.
:03:16. | :03:27. | ||
Thousands of people have been that and seen it and many have touched | :03:27. | :03:32.
it. The Olympic flame on the streets, in the villages, on the | :03:32. | :03:41.
seafront, in the towns. A common phrase seems to join everyone. | :03:41. | :03:45.
is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It is awesome, a once-in-a-lifetime | :03:45. | :03:55.
:03:55. | :03:57. | ||
chance. Day 61 began in Hastings at -- on a ride down the cliff and | :03:57. | :04:06.
then the East. This is what it is all about. It is what it must feel | :04:06. | :04:11.
like to run down the road with the torch. They are ready to cheer | :04:11. | :04:17.
anybody, even me. It is a massive event. You have to enjoy it. If you | :04:17. | :04:22.
can't get a ticket, it is the closest we will get. First stop | :04:22. | :04:28.
across the border into Kent and the village of Hamstreet. A hysterical | :04:28. | :04:38.
moments. Very important moment for our children. Great to be here. | :04:38. | :04:48.
:04:48. | :04:48. | ||
then went into the heart of Ashford. Another turn and it was on his way | :04:48. | :04:58.
:04:58. | :05:03. | ||
back to the coast. I like looking at the torch. It was very long | :05:03. | :05:13.
:05:13. | :05:13. | ||
waiting and I had to have a little rest. A really good experience. | :05:13. | :05:18.
lifetime opportunity and we will never forget it. No rest for the | :05:18. | :05:25.
flame which continued East and a journey underground through part of | :05:25. | :05:35.
:05:35. | :05:35. | ||
the Channel -- Channel Tunnel. In Dover, it turned to the water on a | :05:35. | :05:43.
huge tall ship. Can the flame ever before have seen at any more modes | :05:43. | :05:51.
of transport? A day of history to savour for those that were there | :05:51. | :05:56.
for many years to come. I have to say and have been told | :05:56. | :06:01.
that the torch is making good progress through Dover. Fingers | :06:01. | :06:05.
crossed it will arrive at the right time. One of the people that was | :06:05. | :06:11.
carrying the torch has joined me on the stage. Ed Drake is Britain's | :06:11. | :06:15.
best downhill skier. You were carrying the torch through Hastings | :06:15. | :06:21.
today. It was amazing and such a privilege to run with the torch, | :06:21. | :06:25.
something that everybody dreams of doing. What was the atmosphere like | :06:25. | :06:29.
in Hastings? The weather was a lot better and the crowds were lining | :06:29. | :06:37.
the streets. Loads of schoolkids were cheering. You're at Vancouver | :06:37. | :06:44.
for 2010. For you there for the build up beforehand? Not really. We | :06:44. | :06:50.
were in a training camp away from Vancouver and we didn't get to | :06:50. | :06:54.
experience much of the ceremony. I didn't get to go to the opening | :06:54. | :06:58.
ceremony. What is it like to be able to see this stuff that is | :06:58. | :07:04.
going on beforehand? It is amazing to see. In Vancouver, you didn't | :07:04. | :07:14.
:07:14. | :07:14. | ||
see anything. None of this. It is unreal. The you are now training | :07:14. | :07:21.
for 2014. 18 months away now, just round the corner. Thanks every -- | :07:21. | :07:28.
thanks ever so much. Dame Kelly Holmes is down at in the crowds to | :07:28. | :07:31.
have a chat with some of the people who have come to see everything | :07:31. | :07:37.
that is going on. There is a real buzz down here. Lots of people are | :07:37. | :07:42.
very excited. We have Angela. How long have you been living down this | :07:42. | :07:46.
way? I have lived here for 30 years and it is great to be part of | :07:47. | :07:54.
history. Are you proud that it has come here? Yes. Great for the | :07:54. | :08:04.
:08:04. | :08:06. | ||
people to share it together. What is it like being here today? | :08:06. | :08:13.
Fantastic and we will do it all again tomorrow. What about you? | :08:13. | :08:23.
:08:23. | :08:26. | ||
name is K2. One did you come today? We promised our doorstep fireworks | :08:26. | :08:36.
:08:36. | :08:36. | ||
on her birthday. It is your birthday? Anyone else? Why are you | :08:36. | :08:41.
down here? It is a festival and I have never been here before. What | :08:41. | :08:51.
do you think about the flame coming? Dover is a really good town. | :08:51. | :08:55.
Are you looking forward to the Olympics? What about the flame | :08:55. | :09:01.
coming? My daddy it is working at the Olympics and he is really | :09:01. | :09:07.
excited. The flame will be here in 10 minutes or so. When the country | :09:07. | :09:11.
hosted the Games the last time, it was a completely different affair | :09:11. | :09:21.
:09:21. | :09:22. | ||
and I went to make -- meet a guy a called Frank who got to enjoy it in | :09:22. | :09:32.
Carrying the flame through Dover to a civic reception. The torch relay | :09:32. | :09:38.
has always played a symbolic role in the Olympic movement. In 1948, | :09:38. | :09:43.
the head of the austerity Games in London, there is no 70 day | :09:43. | :09:48.
extravaganza around the country. Finally the British bringing up the | :09:48. | :09:54.
rear as hosts of 1948. Post-war Britain was struggling and the | :09:54. | :09:59.
torch relay was a chance to bring the country together. It was a | :09:59. | :10:06.
great feeling to run through those clouds -- crowds cheering away. I | :10:06. | :10:13.
am very proud of it and I wouldn't sell it for anything. For Frank | :10:13. | :10:17.
Verge was selected to carry the torch through his home county of | :10:17. | :10:22.
Kent. The country were still getting back, feet. It must have | :10:22. | :10:26.
been a great honour to carry the Olympic torch. I really did enjoy | :10:27. | :10:36.
it. I think all the people, they came out with this feeling of | :10:36. | :10:42.
backing you and backing the Olympics. Instead of six years of | :10:42. | :10:46.
the war, something nice was happening. 8000 torch bearers this | :10:46. | :10:49.
year. There will be some amazing stories of how people have been | :10:49. | :10:53.
given the chance to run with the torch. How did you get the | :10:53. | :10:59.
opportunity to run with the torch in 1948? The committee decided we | :10:59. | :11:05.
would have an eight mile race and the winner was to carry it. There | :11:05. | :11:13.
were 15 starters. I've won. By a lot? Actually, yes, I think I won | :11:13. | :11:18.
by several hundred yards. What do you feel now when you see other | :11:18. | :11:22.
people having the opportunity to run with the torch? They will be | :11:22. | :11:27.
honoured and happy and I hope they get as many people clapping as I | :11:27. | :11:37.
:11:37. | :11:40. | ||
did. The 14th Olympiad. 1948. Olympia to London, with thanks to | :11:40. | :11:50.
:11:50. | :11:52. | ||
the bearer. Which I am happy to say, happened to be me. Popcorn, the | :11:52. | :11:57.
food of champions. One of the great privileges of being here is I have | :11:57. | :12:01.
this lady standing alongside me. One of Britain's greatest Olympians | :12:01. | :12:05.
and your performance eight years ago now is etched in all of our | :12:05. | :12:10.
minds. I will have a chat with you but first, let us remind ourselves | :12:11. | :12:17.
of those fantastic moments. Kelly Holmes, going for two gold medals. | :12:17. | :12:27.
:12:27. | :12:32. | ||
Kelly Holmes for Great Britain wins the 1500 metres title. That is the | :12:32. | :12:39.
greatest performers in the history of Olympic running. Look at, in | :12:39. | :12:46.
your hands there, to an Olympic gold medals. I can't believe it is | :12:46. | :12:54.
two years ago. This is so much in my mind, that moment. What is great | :12:54. | :13:01.
is so many people will feel that the Olympic spirit. I remember | :13:01. | :13:05.
watching Q When that both of those medals. The other fantastic than it | :13:05. | :13:10.
was you on the stage in London when the jack rock make those | :13:10. | :13:20.
:13:20. | :13:24. | ||
announcement that it was the City Jacques Rogge. My it eyes nearly | :13:24. | :13:31.
popped out of my head. I jumped on it Steve Cram. Seeing those | :13:31. | :13:35.
thousands of people coming down and being part of that moment. One of | :13:35. | :13:39.
my other great memories was in Tunbridge Wells when you came back | :13:39. | :13:46.
with those gold medals. That open- top bus was just extraordinary. | :13:46. | :13:50.
Yesterday, I was able to do an event than bring the event into | :13:50. | :13:56.
Tunbridge. Big memories of that day. It was amazing. Everyone came out | :13:56. | :14:02.
for me. There is a lot of people who are hoping to emulate Dame | :14:02. | :14:12.
:14:12. | :14:15. | ||
Kelly at the Olympics this year and For the last decade, Lisa Dobriskey | :14:15. | :14:19.
has been one of the UK's best middle-distance runners, and | :14:19. | :14:23.
winning world silver and Commonwealth gold medals but it is | :14:23. | :14:27.
a Olympic success she craves. However, her place at the London | :14:27. | :14:31.
Games appeared all but over following injury and illness | :14:31. | :14:35.
including a blood clot on her lung which was diagnosed as life- | :14:35. | :14:42.
threatening. I was advised to take time off. I took the weekend off. I | :14:42. | :14:47.
was OK to train but I had to train with a doctor present. I felt sorry | :14:47. | :14:52.
for him standing outside in the cold with oxygen in case something | :14:52. | :14:58.
went wrong. We had to take a few risks. This is so important to me. | :14:58. | :15:02.
I just wanted to know I have tried my best to get there. It was worth | :15:02. | :15:06.
it in the end. Successful teams meet someone who is special and | :15:06. | :15:11.
that is what Ashley Jackson is. Two years ago, the hockey star was | :15:11. | :15:19.
named the best world player and it is his aim to get the first GP | :15:19. | :15:24.
medal since 1988. You sit in the car on the way to training and you | :15:24. | :15:33.
think about winning that goal. You really are excited. You get on the | :15:33. | :15:37.
pitch and then someone tells you to run around the pitch until you | :15:37. | :15:41.
can't run any more and it disappears! It will be excitement | :15:41. | :15:48.
to get it started and I can't wait. Few competitors can boast of three | :15:48. | :15:53.
gold medals in their teams but that is what Sir six shooter, Charlotte | :15:53. | :16:01.
Kerwood, achieved. -- Sussex shooter. In Beijing, I got booed | :16:01. | :16:06.
when I was shooting. I don't think he was anything malicious, it was | :16:06. | :16:14.
just that I was on with a Chinese girl. Every time I hit a target, I | :16:14. | :16:20.
got booed and when I missed, I got cheers. Going to London, I know | :16:20. | :16:25.
everyone will be there to support me. The torch is going to be | :16:25. | :16:29.
arriving imminently. Any moment now, we will see the flame as it is | :16:30. | :16:39.
coming up. Everyone is getting ready. Lisa Dobriskey, she has had | :16:39. | :16:43.
an injured refilled couple of years. You know about preparing for the | :16:43. | :16:49.
big championships. She has had a hardier. She is a championship | :16:49. | :16:54.
runner and is back on form. She would have a good games. Have you | :16:54. | :17:01.
spoken to her? I saw her at Crystal Palace. I know she will be there on | :17:01. | :17:09.
time ready to go. When you get to the Games, it clicks back in. She | :17:09. | :17:19.
:17:19. | :17:22. | ||
would be there and we will have The whole point of today is that it | :17:22. | :17:27.
is not just about Olympians but his is also about people you have not | :17:27. | :17:31.
heard about Michael Oren who has been carrying the flame today. | :17:31. | :17:37.
was a light? It was so exciting. I could not believe it. One higher | :17:37. | :17:42.
than that I had to was my friends to pinch me. I just could not wait. | :17:42. | :17:50.
He have raised a lot of money. it is 140,000. How have you raise | :17:50. | :17:54.
that money? Is it started off with small things like cupcakes sales | :17:54. | :18:00.
and then it got too big things like glider flights and sleep walks in | :18:00. | :18:04.
pyjamas. Everything. Well done. I really hope you remember that | :18:04. | :18:09.
moment for the rest of your life. I will. I was very fortunate | :18:09. | :18:12.
because I got to meet up with Lauren a few weeks ago before the | :18:12. | :18:22.
:18:22. | :18:23. | ||
Torch was running today. I spoke to some other people taking part today. | :18:23. | :18:27.
Lauren, this is the actual street where you will be carrying the | :18:27. | :18:37.
:18:37. | :18:42. | ||
Olympic Torch. I am so excited, I In all of spina bifida, Lauren's | :18:43. | :18:48.
parents were warned she may never be able to walk. Now she is 12 and | :18:48. | :18:52.
she is great for that she can lead an active life of. She has been | :18:52. | :18:55.
waged -- she has raised the huge amount for charity. It started off | :18:55. | :19:00.
when I was seven and I did small things like selling cupcakes and | :19:01. | :19:04.
races and then I started off, the biggest thing I did when I was | :19:04. | :19:10.
about it was a glider flight. The most recent thing I did was a | :19:10. | :19:15.
skydive. That was in Milton Keynes for the Alzheimer's Society. | :19:15. | :19:19.
has been recognised for her work with many awards. Because I can | :19:19. | :19:23.
walk, I can do things for them so why can help them. I can help them | :19:23. | :19:31.
with equipment and stuff. That is what some of my charities do. | :19:31. | :19:36.
full-time firefighter, Mike Pitney was nominated for his charity work. | :19:36. | :19:39.
Ten-year-old Sophie farmer has a terminal lung disorder and has | :19:39. | :19:43.
become a close friend of the family. She is an inspiration because she | :19:43. | :19:47.
is running around with less oxygen than anyone else and she gets worn | :19:47. | :19:51.
out a lot quicker than anyone else. She has a big beaming smile, that | :19:52. | :19:59.
was good timing! She is just an inspiration. She is special! Yes, | :19:59. | :20:04.
she has. She loves coming down here. She loves going on the fire engines | :20:04. | :20:07.
and sits upstairs with them and have a drink and plays games | :20:07. | :20:14.
upstairs with them. She loves it. She loves in fire engines outside. | :20:14. | :20:20.
It makes such a big difference. Kierun Baker will be carrying the | :20:20. | :20:24.
Torch through his home town in Dover. At first I did not believe | :20:24. | :20:30.
it but I gradually got used to it. The main bit is getting told about | :20:30. | :20:35.
it in assembly in front of everybody, that was nervous part. | :20:35. | :20:40.
He was nominated by his teacher for his tremendous personal progress | :20:40. | :20:45.
since coming to this school three years ago. He was just wandering | :20:45. | :20:50.
the corridors and not really engaging. He has now Liam person | :20:50. | :20:55.
who is confident to speak to people like you and tell people about what | :20:55. | :20:59.
he has done and he goes to other schools and engages to other people. | :20:59. | :21:03.
He would not have believed it when he arrived that he could do that | :21:03. | :21:08.
now. You are a prefect here now. Does that make you proud? | :21:08. | :21:12.
Definitely. At my old school I never thought I would be this far | :21:12. | :21:19.
but I have changed a hell of a lot. Now what the great thing about | :21:19. | :21:24.
today is the thing that people like Graeme Faber have had the | :21:24. | :21:27.
opportunity to actually carry the Torch and you can see that this is | :21:27. | :21:31.
the man who was bringing the flame up the final steps, as he arrives | :21:32. | :21:36.
here at Marine Parade in Dover. He is carrying the Olympic flame on | :21:36. | :21:42.
the last leg and to light the cauldron where it will stay | :21:42. | :21:47.
overnight here in Dover. It is a marvellous moment for Graeme Faber. | :21:47. | :21:52.
He was actually at the London Olympics last time it was here in | :21:52. | :21:59.
the UK. Let us leave you with a look at the stage as Graeme Faber | :21:59. | :22:08.
like so cauldron for this evening. -- lights the cauldron for this | :22:08. | :22:18.
:22:18. | :22:39. | ||
Amazing, what a magical moment! Come and join us, we have a very | :22:39. | :22:48.
special guest... What an absolutely extraordinary moment. They are the | :22:48. | :22:56.
white cliffs of Dover in the background. And I spoke to Frank | :22:56. | :23:05.
Verge about the 1948 Torch Relay and he was on stage. We are going | :23:05. | :23:10.
to have a chat with Graeme Faber. 76-year-old, how was it for you? | :23:11. | :23:17.
Brilliant! I cannot speak too much. How was the run? It was absolutely | :23:17. | :23:21.
fine. One of the reasons you were nominated, far from all the amazing | :23:21. | :23:26.
stuff you have done for charity, you were at the London Games as a | :23:26. | :23:31.
little boy in 1948. What you remember? I remember watching Jesse | :23:31. | :23:36.
Owens do the 100 metres. I remember a lot of it. That I particularly | :23:36. | :23:46.
:23:46. | :23:46. | ||
remember. Come I am so excited about the 2012 Olympics. That is | :23:47. | :23:51.
something else. Amazing to see two in your lifetime in your country? | :23:51. | :23:56.
And to take part like this as well! House you find the strength to run | :23:56. | :24:06.
every day? I am only 76! Thank you very much. That is it from us for | :24:06. | :24:10.
now. What a fantastic moment! The rain has just started to come down | :24:10. | :24:14.
again a little bit but it will not dampen any body's enthusiasm. We | :24:14. | :24:21.
have got from special guests with us. Hugh Robinson and Steve Backley, | :24:21. | :24:26.
Olympic minister and an Olympian. Are you quite pleased with how | :24:26. | :24:30.
things are going? Yes, it would be nice if the weather perked up but | :24:30. | :24:35.
that apart the... In spite of the weather it has been a fantastic | :24:35. | :24:39.
evening and that is the story of the Olympic Torch Relay. We have | :24:39. | :24:43.
her fantastic stories from the people are well the Torch today. | :24:43. | :24:47.
People really are picking up on the legacy. If you look at the Torch | :24:47. | :24:50.
Relay from the moment it a ride in the country, the real story of it | :24:50. | :24:54.
has not been about the Olympics and sport, it has been about the | :24:54. | :24:59.
remarkable stories of the people who have carried the Torch. I was | :24:59. | :25:01.
in Hastings last night with a group of runners who were all telling | :25:02. | :25:06.
their stories on the bus. There was one man who broke down in tears. It | :25:06. | :25:11.
was just fantastic, you hear these remarkable stories from people who | :25:11. | :25:15.
never advertise themselves normally and that is great. That is what | :25:16. | :25:19.
this is all about, people ate coming together for this one moment. | :25:19. | :25:23.
Feed, you were doing the Torch tomorrow. I know you are very | :25:23. | :25:27.
excited because all I can see our yacht weeks about the fact you are | :25:27. | :25:32.
doing it and it is just one more sleep. I am so excited about it. | :25:32. | :25:37.
When you are competing you are oblivious to all of this stuff. | :25:37. | :25:41.
What has been lovely, hosting the Games and being part of the | :25:41. | :25:44.
preparations, is going out and finding out what the Olympics does | :25:44. | :25:48.
to people. We live in a bit of the bubble, don't we? Is has been great | :25:48. | :25:53.
to do and it is great to see the looks on people's faces when they | :25:53. | :25:58.
see the flame. It has made a special. You have been having a | :25:58. | :26:01.
chat with some of the other Torch bearers that we were talking to | :26:01. | :26:05.
earlier and they were absolutely made up with the reaction they were | :26:05. | :26:08.
getting as they went through Ashford. They were saying the | :26:08. | :26:11.
atmosphere was extraordinary. Everyone I have spoken to has | :26:11. | :26:16.
carried the Torch has said it was far better than they could have | :26:16. | :26:21.
ever thought. It is quite hard to conjure up what it will be like, | :26:21. | :26:27.
you will judge for 300 yards and carry the Torch but of course it is | :26:27. | :26:31.
the people who come out. We have been battered by the weather here | :26:31. | :26:36.
in Dover but the atmosphere is great. The people making special. | :26:37. | :26:42.
Hugh Robertson, I cannot help but ask about a few other things? G4S | :26:42. | :26:48.
and the security, are we going to have a safe games? Absolutely, we | :26:48. | :26:51.
are. All that has happened on Wednesday last night -- last week | :26:51. | :26:55.
is that G4S said they could not provide the numbers of God that | :26:55. | :26:59.
they were contracted to so we have increased the number of military. | :27:00. | :27:03.
Tour to athletes who are arriving in the village, instead of being | :27:03. | :27:06.
horrified by it, they are really pleased to see the military on the | :27:06. | :27:10.
gate and they are doing a fantastic job and it makes you feel great | :27:10. | :27:14.
about the London Games. It will be a safe and secure gains. 31 more | :27:14. | :27:19.
question for you, Steve? Adam Gemili has really come to attention | :27:19. | :27:24.
recently, what do you think about him? He has won the junior | :27:24. | :27:27.
championships and he has shown he can compete and a quest -- under | :27:27. | :27:31.
pressure. He is clearly talented, that is a given and we know he can | :27:31. | :27:34.
compete and the pressure and is going to the Olympic Games. Who | :27:34. | :27:39.
knows? More realistically we will be looking at Rio in four years' | :27:39. | :27:43.
time. I am really looking forward to with. I have had a fantastic | :27:43. | :27:48.
time, we are celebrating all night. It is great to be part of the show | :27:48. | :27:53.
and thank you for coming. The party will continue all evening. There | :27:53. | :27:57.
will be a big fireworks display later. Tomorrow it will move on one | :27:57. | :28:02.
more stage again and our reporter is at Leeds Castle now. | :28:02. | :28:06.
Hello from a very cold and soggy Leeds Castle. You can see | :28:06. | :28:10.
preparations have been under way for much of the day for the big | :28:10. | :28:14.
celebration that to rights here tomorrow night. The stage is set | :28:14. | :28:17.
and out here we will have an additional big screen and out on | :28:17. | :28:23.
the lawn there will be around 1,500 faces, all will be here tomorrow | :28:23. | :28:27.
night as the Torch arrives at approximately 6:30pm. Just to | :28:27. | :28:30.
remind you of the route for tomorrow. It will go through the | :28:30. | :28:34.
coast and weave its way through the Thanet towns and go towards | :28:34. | :28:44.
Maidstone and arrive here tomorrow evening. If you have been out and | :28:44. | :28:51.
about getting photos today you can Tweet them to wealth. -- Tweet them | :28:51. | :28:56.
to us. I am really looking forward to | :28:56. | :29:01.
tomorrow. I hope the weather cheers up a bit. It has been brilliant. | :29:01. | :29:05.
Everyone is celebrating. I know they will all have memories in | :29:05. | :29:08.
their mind for ever after this event. They have all been part of | :29:08. | :29:13.
the Olympic spirit. It has been great to see so many people doing | :29:13. | :29:17.
this county proud. Absolutely. It is one thing Kent does well, | :29:17. | :29:21. |
