Good evening. I know Carnival time takes some beating here in Rio de

:00:49.:00:56.

Janeiro, but it was a wild weekend if you were a supporter of British

:00:57.:01:01.

sport. Eight gold medals, five of them coming yesterday on sensational

:01:02.:01:08.

Sunday at Britain's best awayday in Olympic history, and the medals

:01:09.:01:12.

continue to come. There has been a 16 year in Rio, and it has come from

:01:13.:01:18.

Charlotte Dujardin in dressage. But we are going straightaway to the

:01:19.:01:23.

place where Max Whitlock won two gold medals in a couple of hours

:01:24.:01:26.

yesterday. We have three more apparatus finals to enjoy, first of

:01:27.:01:32.

all it the men 's rings, and Brazil expects, this really is a huge

:01:33.:01:37.

moment for the home nation. Arthur Zanetti, the reigning champion on

:01:38.:01:40.

this piece of apparatus, he has the hopes of a nation on his very broad

:01:41.:01:44.

and a very strong shoulders. Matt Baker, take it away.

:01:45.:01:49.

Thank you, Hazel. Zanetti has just left the arena, it is important for

:01:50.:01:57.

these gymnasts to be fully warmed up before starting on the rings, but

:01:58.:02:01.

the gymnast who is just chalking up ready to go, you Hao, a massive 15.8

:02:02.:02:13.

scorer last year, so you are looking really for those 515s that are going

:02:14.:02:26.

to be meddling. -- medaling. This will be a high-class final, and

:02:27.:02:30.

looking for my new deductions here. Let's just talk our viewers through

:02:31.:02:33.

what makes the perfect rings routine, Dan. You need to have a lot

:02:34.:02:40.

of strength elements, you need to hold for a minimum of two seconds,

:02:41.:02:45.

any less and there will be big deductions, you might not even have

:02:46.:02:49.

the element counted. Moving from one element to another is also big

:02:50.:02:54.

points for the start value. And sticking the dismount, and when you

:02:55.:03:00.

are swinging, you are not allowed to have the rings moving, otherwise

:03:01.:03:03.

there are more deductions. Timing is key. If you start to see the rings

:03:04.:03:08.

swing, the gymnast will drop their body as soon as the rings drop into

:03:09.:03:12.

the middle of the frame, and timing is everything here, so these are the

:03:13.:03:17.

top eight gymnasts, the highest scores from qualification, they

:03:18.:03:20.

really are the specialists. It's time for the strongman event, the

:03:21.:03:23.

rings Olympic final. And You Hao in qualification posted

:03:24.:03:38.

the top difficulty. You can see he starts with a fantastic strength

:03:39.:03:43.

element, the rings are completely still, and there are another. We

:03:44.:03:50.

expect to see another added an? Yes, we will, and he is making sure he is

:03:51.:03:54.

holding all of these for the exact amount of time. Some even maybe a

:03:55.:04:02.

little longer just to make sure. There he is showing he can swing as

:04:03.:04:05.

well as holding the strength elements.

:04:06.:04:12.

In the crucifix, your shoulders have to be exactly flat to make sure you

:04:13.:04:17.

get it counted. Slight bent arms in the forward

:04:18.:04:37.

swing. Big dismount. And didn't make the landing. This is the point where

:04:38.:04:41.

you have gone through the full routine, and your body is screaming

:04:42.:04:44.

at you to generate the force to get up into those complicated dismounts

:04:45.:04:49.

and land them is a very big ask, especially when you are going all

:04:50.:04:54.

out the difficulty. Well, the dismount is often what sets them

:04:55.:04:57.

apart, his strength stuff is fantastic. He has to hold the body

:04:58.:05:03.

as straight as possible, and he really does manage that. The

:05:04.:05:06.

discipline on the rings is important. You turn them out. Yes,

:05:07.:05:12.

you have to turn them out just to show that the rings are away from

:05:13.:05:15.

your shoulders and away from your body, see you are not cheating in

:05:16.:05:20.

any way. That looked like he was maybe slightly tired before the end,

:05:21.:05:24.

he struggled up to the handstand, and the dismount was under rotated.

:05:25.:05:28.

It is a browsing because you can see he is a very strong guy, but the

:05:29.:05:33.

dismount is the big thing. That 0.3 deduction for the step is probably

:05:34.:05:38.

bigger than any deduction he had in the routine. It is, and especially

:05:39.:05:42.

in this final, there are really strong guys, and it will be about

:05:43.:05:47.

who has the better dismount who will win this. He has left the door open

:05:48.:05:52.

a little bit for the other competitors. Had he really been

:05:53.:05:58.

perfect with the seven start value, he might have posted a score they

:05:59.:06:04.

couldn't catch. You Hao's score is in, a difficulty of seven and an

:06:05.:06:09.

execution score of 8.4, so add those together and you get 15.4. An

:06:10.:06:17.

anxious wait, then, the You Hao. That is the benchmark that has been

:06:18.:06:20.

set, and now it is the turn of the current world champion, LS Lowry is

:06:21.:06:28.

Petronius, second highest in qualifying. Just look at this for a

:06:29.:06:35.

body type, very light bottom half. -- Eleftherios Petrounias. He has a

:06:36.:06:40.

light bottom half and massive shoulders and torso. He was looking

:06:41.:06:43.

great in warm up just a few moments ago. European champion, world

:06:44.:06:49.

champion. Can he add Olympic champion? It has been a long time

:06:50.:06:57.

since he qualified on that first day of competition of the Olympics. 20

:06:58.:07:02.

of time to recover his strength, and you can see there, massive control.

:07:03.:07:10.

You can see when he is doing the strength elements, he opened his

:07:11.:07:14.

hands to show there is no false grip, which is where you can also

:07:15.:07:19.

have deductions, 0.1, so he is trying to save every single

:07:20.:07:30.

. Almost making it look easy. Making sure the timing is perfect. He is

:07:31.:07:41.

getting every element counted. And there's the dismount. Full

:07:42.:07:58.

twisting double back somersault. You were saying the dismount was the

:07:59.:08:03.

thing that usually sets the gymnast apart on rings, and that was an

:08:04.:08:06.

impressive one, although maybe a leg fault? A little leg fault, obviously

:08:07.:08:11.

a little easier because he did the double twist in the top position.

:08:12.:08:16.

You Hao did the double twist in the straight position, you rotate much

:08:17.:08:19.

slower when your body is long and when it is short, so he won't be

:08:20.:08:24.

given quite as many marks, but he certainly gave away a great deal

:08:25.:08:29.

less. He is really a rings specialist. I love watching him on

:08:30.:08:39.

rings. His position is perfect, and I enjoy seeing how easy he makes it

:08:40.:08:43.

look, when that is so difficult. He is just so stylish. He really is.

:08:44.:08:52.

This is great, I think. He swings on straight arms, kills the top of the

:08:53.:08:57.

swing. He wasn't too bad on leg form, actually, the knees were

:08:58.:09:00.

together, and you could see him fight for that stuck landing. He is

:09:01.:09:07.

obviously working it, you can tell, can't you? He used to have quite the

:09:08.:09:14.

deductions on the landing, and it is only a little difference in start

:09:15.:09:21.

value, so he has opted to double in the top position so that he can get

:09:22.:09:25.

the landing. You Hao has a difficulty score of seven, gymnasts

:09:26.:09:30.

get extra marks were doing harder routines, you add the difficulty to

:09:31.:09:34.

the execution to get the total, and it is a massive score. It is a

:09:35.:09:43.

massive score of 16! 6.8 in a difficulty, 9.2 in the execution,

:09:44.:09:47.

and that is the highest score we have seen on rings here in E O.

:09:48.:09:52.

Absolutely, and a massive 9.2 in execution, that means the judges

:09:53.:09:57.

only took 0.8 of that routine, it was as close to perfect as we have

:09:58.:10:01.

seen. One of the youngest gymnasts now, this is Dennis Goossens, 22

:10:02.:10:09.

years old. Made the final at the Europeans earlier this year. What

:10:10.:10:16.

company he is in here. It is a huge final. As you would expect of the

:10:17.:10:26.

Olympic Games. He is only young at 22, so could be gaining experience

:10:27.:10:31.

by being in this final. He will be hoping to put in a nice big score to

:10:32.:10:33.

try and challenge for the medals. Are showing his swing to handstand,

:10:34.:11:01.

slightly struggling there. Minor deduction. Here is the dismount. It

:11:02.:11:09.

isn't going to be as high a start value as the other guys, but it was

:11:10.:11:16.

fairly clean. 15.4 is the score that he is looking for to go ahead of You

:11:17.:11:25.

Hao. A little bit of a different style in 19 clue do it quite a bit

:11:26.:11:30.

more swing. It is in the last four, eight years, the last cycles, that

:11:31.:11:35.

the gymnasts include these multiple somersaults as well as the strength

:11:36.:11:39.

elements, isn't it, Dan? Yes, and to be the best on rings, you have to be

:11:40.:11:44.

really strong and have good swinging elements, and that shows you are the

:11:45.:11:50.

best on rings. He included quite a bit more swinging elements, and that

:11:51.:11:54.

was the full twisting double straight, a little bit pike Don

:11:55.:11:58.

landing, a step to the side, but as a young gymnast in his first Olympic

:11:59.:12:01.

Games, a very good effort. Zanetti has now come into the arena.

:12:02.:12:18.

Goossens score is now in, 14 point 933. Now, the next gymnast in this

:12:19.:12:32.

men's rings Olympics final is Denis Ablyazin, he is capable of a very

:12:33.:12:37.

big score here. In the team final for Russia which help them achieve a

:12:38.:12:44.

silver medal, he got 15.7. European champion two years ago. And one of

:12:45.:12:49.

the Russian team that have really performed well here at these

:12:50.:12:56.

championships. Super-strength elements. Sets up the swimming

:12:57.:13:05.

section, Dan. He does, and back into the strength position. So hard to

:13:06.:13:10.

control that make sure he doesn't move all. A great crucifix with open

:13:11.:13:13.

wrists, and again. Now the big dismount coming up.

:13:14.:13:39.

Double twisting double straight to add colour to that difficulty score.

:13:40.:13:46.

I think that will be a good score. He dropped for that at exactly the

:13:47.:13:52.

right time. He is a very nice technician, very good, and the fact

:13:53.:13:55.

that the step on landing was a step back is better than a step forward.

:13:56.:13:59.

The step forward means you didn't quite have enough height and

:14:00.:14:06.

rotation, so the judges double deduct. He stepped back because he

:14:07.:14:13.

almost had to much rotation. He always looks to me like he performs

:14:14.:14:20.

very nicely within his capabilities. There is the big dismount. Slight

:14:21.:14:30.

step back. Just 0.1 when they take the step and then bring the foot

:14:31.:14:38.

back in to join. Petronius leads with a score of 16, Tabak -- You Hao

:14:39.:14:57.

and Goossens following. The step might not give him quite as higher

:14:58.:15:05.

score as Petronius. Will he beat You Hao? I think so.

:15:06.:15:16.

He has gone ahead of You Hao, so Denis Ablyazin in second at the

:15:17.:15:30.

moment with a score of 15.7, 16.8 the difficulty, 8.9 is execution.

:15:31.:15:37.

That score of 16 will be there for a while. That is a big ask for Arthur

:15:38.:15:48.

Zanetti to beat. The Brazilian gymnast, a lot of expectation on his

:15:49.:15:51.

shoulders. He has been a very big part of the Rio will and --

:15:52.:15:55.

Olympics. Well, a gymnast that will challenge

:15:56.:16:10.

Petrounias with the score of 16 is Yang Liu, the youngest gymnast in

:16:11.:16:17.

this final. He was world champion two years ago and has posted a score

:16:18.:16:28.

of 15.9 whilst here in Brazil. That is amazing to have been world

:16:29.:16:31.

champion at such a young age on such a piece of apparatus that needs of

:16:32.:16:38.

such strength and maturity. But he is enormously suited to this

:16:39.:16:44.

apparatus. His positions are almost perfect and I think he can

:16:45.:16:47.

definitely challenge for that first spot. That is the best inverted

:16:48.:16:53.

crucifix I have seen. He gets completely flat, which is what the

:16:54.:16:55.

judges are looking for. Perfectly flat, almost like he is

:16:56.:17:10.

laying on the floor. This is a long routine, this. It is huge style

:17:11.:17:19.

value. Coming up to the dismount. He will be deducted for that.

:17:20.:17:25.

A big dismount, it is not going to be enough for a top place. What a

:17:26.:17:34.

shame, what a shame for Yang Liu. I mean, it was going incredibly well,

:17:35.:17:38.

gets three quarters of the way through the routine. I don't know if

:17:39.:17:42.

it was just him getting tired or whatever but it dawned on me that it

:17:43.:17:46.

seemed to be going on for ever. It was as soon as you said this is an

:17:47.:17:50.

awfully long routine, it was as if he heard you and then stalled on the

:17:51.:17:58.

next two elements. That is the secret of constructing routines. You

:17:59.:18:00.

need your ten most difficult elements and if you can just do ten

:18:01.:18:04.

elements, you don't give the judges too much room to deduct. If you do a

:18:05.:18:09.

really long routine with 15 elements in, then you will get more tired and

:18:10.:18:14.

there is lots more for them to deduct. That was the stall, he has

:18:15.:18:19.

to block out into an absolute handstand and he struggled with it.

:18:20.:18:23.

His body language here said it all. Disappointed with himself. So

:18:24.:18:32.

Petrounias no doubt will continue to lead this men's final with a score

:18:33.:18:37.

of 16. Abliazin and with 15 points seven. -- with 15.7. I think with

:18:38.:18:51.

the stall for the handstand and the step backwards, I think the

:18:52.:18:56.

deductions were greater. It is the execution score we have seen from

:18:57.:19:06.

nine down to eight. There will be three gymnasts left to go after Yang

:19:07.:19:14.

Liu gets his score. Very close indeed, 15.6. 6.9 on a difficulty.

:19:15.:19:25.

For now, he is incurred, but for how long? Danny Pinheiro Rodrigues,

:19:26.:19:35.

actually a reserve for this rings final, in four and the SAE, who

:19:36.:19:42.

injured his leg on vault. -- in the side.

:19:43.:19:48.

The French team had a very varied competition, losing gymnasts to

:19:49.:19:59.

injury. But that is a super-strength element. It is and, again, that's

:20:00.:20:04.

his own move and he does it so well. There is no one else in the world

:20:05.:20:05.

who can do it quite so well as him. Really taken his chance, put into

:20:06.:20:22.

this final act of being the reserve, making sure he is not giving

:20:23.:20:30.

anything away. Slight loss of form in handstand. Big wind up into the

:20:31.:20:39.

dismount. Good effort. Great effort, I think. He took his chance, to

:20:40.:20:46.

start with, he was the first reserve and he has been put in and he just

:20:47.:20:53.

wanted to give it his all and show the world he can do it in this file.

:20:54.:21:01.

Nice style, a little bit taller than some of the other gymnasts. So this,

:21:02.:21:08.

when we say his own move, the first person to have performed it, you

:21:09.:21:11.

have do submitted to the International committee and as long

:21:12.:21:16.

as you perform it in competition in a world championship or the Olympics

:21:17.:21:20.

successfully, they will credit it and call it after you, so it is a

:21:21.:21:27.

Rodrigues. The step on dismount, though. After all that effort, just

:21:28.:21:37.

to absorb the landing. Such a difficulty. He has been around for a

:21:38.:21:50.

while, 31 years old. His best finish in an Olympics brings final was

:21:51.:21:57.

fifth in Beijing. Abliazin pacing, as he will do, before going for his

:21:58.:22:03.

vault. Hugely powerful gymnast. The score is in and it is 15 Pinheiro

:22:04.:22:18.

Rodrigues. -- 15 .233. And we have another gymnast now who wasn't

:22:19.:22:22.

expecting to be in this final, second reserve, Igor Radivilov, a

:22:23.:22:32.

gymnast looking to make history on vault in a while, he's going to

:22:33.:22:34.

produce something that has never been seen in competition, triple

:22:35.:22:40.

front. But for now, he has to concentrate on rings.

:22:41.:22:45.

Best result on rings is seventh at the European Championships, that was

:22:46.:22:49.

two years ago. Radivilov, then, 23 years old, from

:22:50.:23:23.

Ukraine. Lovely top position, the planche has to be an absolutely

:23:24.:23:30.

straight position. That is how the difficulty rises. He loves showing

:23:31.:23:36.

off his swinging work. Double somersault into a Maltese. Then the

:23:37.:23:38.

crucifix. Now preparing himself for his

:23:39.:23:59.

dismount. Can he get this right? Winding up. Double double. Wow,

:24:00.:24:05.

dismounts do not come much better than that. He is delighted, you can

:24:06.:24:12.

see the relief there. When you said winding up, you could see that the

:24:13.:24:16.

next big swing really gave him the lift to be able to elevate the

:24:17.:24:22.

dismount at the time for the to us. He has come into this final and used

:24:23.:24:26.

every opportunity. He could be in with a chance here, Dan. He could,

:24:27.:24:32.

he needs 15 points six to get into the medals and I think it will be

:24:33.:24:38.

close. In the team final, who scored 15.566 the Ukraine. I think it will

:24:39.:24:44.

be close, I think that was a better routine. His difficulty was 6-point

:24:45.:24:52.

date, we have had a range of the top being seven, down to six points six.

:24:53.:24:58.

It is in the middle, but that was a really good swing. When you talk

:24:59.:25:03.

about style in the twisting and the Turk, knees were locked together,

:25:04.:25:10.

that was really clean. -- the tuck. What a moment this could be for

:25:11.:25:14.

Radivilov if he can see his name in the top three. It is 15.466. It is

:25:15.:25:26.

forth at the moment for Radivilov. Well, I am a little surprised at

:25:27.:25:33.

that. Yes, I thought it would be a couple higher. But we are a lot

:25:34.:25:37.

higher than the judges, the judges are level with the rings and you can

:25:38.:25:42.

see everything down there. I don't know if you can hear the chanting

:25:43.:25:46.

that is going around the Olympic Arena, it is for this man, Arthur

:25:47.:25:51.

Zanetti, the reigning Olympic champion from Brazil. But let me

:25:52.:25:56.

tell you, he has to do the routine of his life just to get into the

:25:57.:26:09.

medals. The score for a medal at the moment is 15.6. The latter gymnast

:26:10.:26:10.

to go, Arthur Zanetti. -- the last. Silence in the arena. Every person

:26:11.:26:27.

in this arena willing the great performance and that is a fantastic

:26:28.:26:36.

start. Great show of strength. Those from a static position and moved up

:26:37.:26:40.

to Maltese -- he goes from. This is a gymnast that has struggled

:26:41.:26:50.

slightly in the serene elements but is so, so strong, he makes the

:26:51.:26:53.

strength of look really easy throughout.

:26:54.:27:01.

Wrists open on the crucifix, saving every tenth.

:27:02.:27:16.

Up into the handstand. He scored 15.533 and qualifications. He needs

:27:17.:27:30.

to make the landing can. Well, I think he could well have done it. He

:27:31.:27:38.

gave it his absolute all. We are talking about maybe silver,

:27:39.:27:42.

potentially bronze, but 16 is a big, big ask. I don't think he's going to

:27:43.:27:48.

score 16 but I think it has potential to go into the bronze

:27:49.:27:55.

medal place. 15. Is that silver medal position, 15.6 is bronze

:27:56.:28:01.

medal. Petrounias leads with a score of 16. Well, it is all about the

:28:02.:28:09.

execution. Whenever judges can find little fractions of tenths to take

:28:10.:28:16.

away. I think the strength positions are almost perfect. There were a few

:28:17.:28:21.

wobbles in handstand. We will have to see how much the judges are going

:28:22.:28:29.

to deduct. Tiniest hope on landing. He is obviously delighted -- tiniest

:28:30.:28:39.

hop. Judges always go for execution, so if it is a tie, he will end up

:28:40.:28:46.

winning on execution. So let's just keep our eye on the scoreboard and

:28:47.:28:51.

what comes in. If his score matches, he will end up with that silver

:28:52.:28:56.

medal position. Let's have a look and see. He is applauding, the score

:28:57.:29:05.

is in, it is 15.766. Arthur Zanetti gets a silver medal for Brazil in

:29:06.:29:12.

the man's Olympic rings final. Petrounias takes gold. He is now

:29:13.:29:18.

European champion, world champion and Olympic champion. Zanetti, for

:29:19.:29:25.

Brazil, takes the silver and Dennis Abliazin and, for Russia, takes

:29:26.:29:35.

bronze. Well, I think it is fair to say that Zanetti came here expecting

:29:36.:29:39.

not to be able to retain that Olympic title, because Petrounias on

:29:40.:29:43.

the world stage in the last four years has just been unstoppable.

:29:44.:29:51.

Yes, he has been up in the highly 15.9s and 16s for the last year and

:29:52.:29:58.

only despite can get close to him. Unfortunately, he made a small

:29:59.:30:01.

mistake in the rings final and Zanetti has really capitalised that.

:30:02.:30:06.

Surprising, really, for the Chinese gymnast, because in those first two

:30:07.:30:11.

days of competition, team qualification and team final, they

:30:12.:30:15.

had looked so dominant on rings, but they weren't able to raise their

:30:16.:30:22.

game again. How often would you be -- expecting to be able to do your

:30:23.:30:27.

whole rings routine? It is hard, because some days when your body is

:30:28.:30:32.

naturally tired and you can't do all of your strength elements, it is not

:30:33.:30:35.

like pommel horse or floor, where you can do routines most days, you

:30:36.:30:42.

will have to do routines, half routines or with support from the

:30:43.:30:45.

coaches to just try and keep the position going.

:30:46.:30:49.

Well, these gymnasts, including Denis Ablyazin, will go up for their

:30:50.:30:58.

medals now, Denis Ablyazin will receive his bronze medal and then

:30:59.:31:02.

have to refocus very quickly for the men's vault final which is next

:31:03.:31:03.

here. Eleftherios HAZEL IRVINE: Ever popular here,

:31:04.:31:27.

Arthur Zanetti, it is another medal for Brazil, Lord of the Rings, he

:31:28.:31:31.

has been user at this time around. If you are just joining us, hello

:31:32.:31:38.

and welcome to day ten. We have been watching a lot of great sport here

:31:39.:31:42.

at the Olympic Games, and it was made even better by a 16th gold

:31:43.:31:48.

medal for Charlotte Dujardin a short while ago in the individual

:31:49.:31:51.

dressage. She has retained her title, the 40th middle of these

:31:52.:31:55.

games so far for the Great Britain team, and it came after a brilliant

:31:56.:31:59.

bronze from Sophie Hitchon in the women's hammer, a new British

:32:00.:32:04.

record. It means it is a first medal for a British woman in a field event

:32:05.:32:09.

in athletics since Fatima Whitbread in 1988. That is how significant

:32:10.:32:15.

that achievement is. It has been tremendous today. Also going well

:32:16.:32:18.

have been Great Britain's badminton players. Mark as Ellis and Chris

:32:19.:32:24.

Langridge are through in the Men's Doubles, they have played well above

:32:25.:32:28.

their world ranking of 22 in this competition so far to make it into

:32:29.:32:32.

the knockout stages, and they are in their quarterfinal today where they

:32:33.:32:37.

face the Japanese duo of endo and Hayakawa. It is best of three games,

:32:38.:32:45.

first 21 in will do it. The British pair have already won the first

:32:46.:32:49.

game, we will join them in the second, and commentary comes from

:32:50.:32:51.

Paul Hand and Simon Reed. COMMENTATOR: Ellis in so quickly. He

:32:52.:33:09.

has been a real powerhouse from the back. Chris is very tidy with the

:33:10.:33:21.

tight shots, and they have a terrific communication, you can see

:33:22.:33:25.

Chris Langridge shouting at, come on! And they were in a really tough

:33:26.:33:36.

group, which they did so well to get out of, Langridge and Ellis.

:33:37.:33:40.

And now, here they are, up against a pair who have been number two in the

:33:41.:33:51.

world. And they are frontrunners, and they are holding on really well.

:33:52.:33:55.

A 5-point cushion at the mid-game break. Back to that group, they beat

:33:56.:34:05.

Callington and that as well, so I really strong showing in that group.

:34:06.:34:27.

They have achieved so much in their two years together, have these two.

:34:28.:34:35.

That support tightened up, but this really out of all recognition, if

:34:36.:34:38.

they could get through to the semifinal of the Olympic Games.

:34:39.:35:25.

Again, miraculous defence, but Ellis will not be denied. He is taking

:35:26.:35:33.

over this match. Yes, bullying his way through, every point is just so

:35:34.:35:39.

gripping. I can't take my eyes off the screen, it is such a compelling

:35:40.:35:40.

watch. Oh, that is out. He can't make it

:35:41.:36:05.

every time! It just seems as if he can.

:36:06.:36:12.

A lovely blend of soft handed touch around the forecourt, and then

:36:13.:36:20.

bullying, menacing presence from the backcourt with Ellis.

:36:21.:36:41.

Well left. That was a tough shot to control.

:36:42.:37:18.

They have been a little careless on serve. There is a disturbing sense

:37:19.:37:26.

of calm and focused on the Japanese camp, but they have missed by

:37:27.:37:27.

increments every now and then. Yes, so quick, Langridge, to see the

:37:28.:37:57.

open court, just tuck sitting beautifully. Look how quick he was,

:37:58.:37:59.

he had to pounce, wonderful finish. Once again, the lead stretches to

:38:00.:38:08.

six. They are very nearly there. Good try from behind the back! It

:38:09.:38:55.

has been breathtaking, badminton at its best. I think this last one was

:38:56.:39:03.

a shout from the net, Chris couldn't quite get a read on it. Kind of had

:39:04.:39:07.

a double take at that one. They have spent more time on the

:39:08.:39:30.

grandest of stages, twice all England open finalists, super series

:39:31.:39:31.

event, of course. Used to turning matches like this

:39:32.:39:38.

around. So, hope springing again for the

:39:39.:40:10.

Japanese, just beginning to eat into the lead. Can the Brits stop them?

:40:11.:40:17.

The lead was six points, it is down to four.

:40:18.:40:30.

It is so wasteful. A clever idea, the execution not, just spilling

:40:31.:40:35.

over the back line. Just when they were starting to get

:40:36.:40:46.

things going. Then that happens. It's in. Again, super rally, great

:40:47.:41:31.

defence from both Ellis and Langridge.

:41:32.:41:42.

Court drenched in sweat. It is 34 degrees outside, it must be nearly

:41:43.:41:59.

that inside. It will certainly feel that we have the players. They don't

:42:00.:42:04.

want to turn the air conditioning up too much unless it creates drift in

:42:05.:42:08.

the hall. They were concerned about that before this badminton event

:42:09.:42:11.

started, about the drift in the hall. But we haven't heard too many

:42:12.:42:14.

complaints. Still the lead narrows. It has been

:42:15.:42:37.

halved now. Can they hang on? No, just missed! Another superhuman

:42:38.:43:41.

effort from the Brits, and it was from the racket of Ellis there. He

:43:42.:43:49.

had to change the direction, he has had such great results with that,

:43:50.:43:52.

but just spinning wide of the doubles line. So it is down to two

:43:53.:43:55.

now. Utterly focused, these two.

:43:56.:44:16.

Deep-seated belief well, they had a dreadful start to this second game,

:44:17.:44:20.

when they did seem all at sea, but just in the last couple of minutes,

:44:21.:44:25.

they look a different proposition. And it is going to be mighty tough

:44:26.:44:29.

for language and Ellis to hang on here.

:44:30.:44:33.

It is all Endo and Hayakawa. They were 15-10 up, and the lead

:44:34.:45:38.

evaporated so quickly. Perhaps they just need to take the time and

:45:39.:45:43.

somehow regroup, because these two, they are two men on a mission, in

:45:44.:45:47.

blue. How can they stop the momentum which is so firmly with the Japanese

:45:48.:45:48.

now? Yes. Great choice, great execution

:45:49.:46:06.

from Langridge. Yes, it was a straight net shot from the top

:46:07.:46:09.

drawer here by Chris Langridge. Wonderful hands.

:46:10.:46:21.

And of course, what it does for the Japanese, when you are playing soft

:46:22.:46:26.

shots like that, they don't know where to base themselves. Deep in

:46:27.:46:30.

the court, shorten the court? They have been bullied by the Ellis smash

:46:31.:46:34.

and with the soft skills, they are combining so well Langridge with the

:46:35.:46:42.

soft skills. Now can they put a few points back-to-back?

:46:43.:47:00.

Yes. Super finish. The bulk of the work from Ellis but Langridge with

:47:01.:47:10.

the finish. Just pummelling down on the right

:47:11.:47:24.

hip of Hayaka. In the end, Langridge with the finish and the league is

:47:25.:47:25.

back to two. -- the lead. And they have put a stop to the

:47:26.:47:34.

momentum. They managed to get Langridge away

:47:35.:48:31.

from the net and the Japanese are back level. There was a raucous cry

:48:32.:48:37.

from them in the penultimate point. The sharp end of the game, they are

:48:38.:48:41.

acquitting themselves very, very well. Endo with the big finish.

:48:42.:49:06.

They continue to waste points. And that may turn out to be crucial. We

:49:07.:49:14.

have seen a couple of service. The Japanese team. -- service mistakes

:49:15.:49:19.

from the Japanese team. Another monster rally. Langridge

:49:20.:50:13.

again with the punishment. It was a blistering point from both teams,

:50:14.:50:18.

wasn't it? Incredible, spreading the court well, both of them. Ellis

:50:19.:50:23.

setting it up wonderfully and Langridge sticking the knife in,

:50:24.:50:29.

closing the net down. Two points away.

:50:30.:50:33.

Can they hold their nerve, keep that kind of form going?

:50:34.:50:45.

What a mess from Endo. Expensive. So three points for the semifinal of

:50:46.:51:11.

the Olympic Games for Marcus Elliott and Chris Langridge. -- Marcus

:51:12.:51:15.

Ellis. It is out! And the Brits are

:51:16.:52:20.

through! And they look so confident at the end. What a result for

:52:21.:52:27.

British badminton. Such an emotive moment, wasn't it? A breathtaking

:52:28.:52:35.

performance from the world ranked 22nd couple, as Sting the eighth

:52:36.:52:42.

best team in the world. -- as Sting. Marcus, once you got to the

:52:43.:52:46.

quarterfinals, you said you had to pinch yourself in amazement. When

:52:47.:52:51.

you won the final point, you on your knees. What is your reaction today?

:52:52.:52:57.

I honestly can't believe it. Literally, five days ago, the

:52:58.:53:00.

competition started and we have had such hard matches and to come out on

:53:01.:53:04.

top today, oh, my God, I really am lost words. It is beyond what we

:53:05.:53:11.

could have expected. Chris, where does this rank in terms of career

:53:12.:53:15.

highlights? It's definitely the best. It is unbelievable. Without

:53:16.:53:20.

sounding too cheesy, it does show, you put in hard work, you graphed

:53:21.:53:25.

away and we are not the most gifted, the quickest, but we work hard, we

:53:26.:53:30.

work really well together, the way we flowed together as a team, it

:53:31.:53:34.

shows when two people put their mind to something and I will hold my hand

:53:35.:53:38.

up, I am not the best player but I work hard and this is insane, the

:53:39.:53:43.

semifinal of the Olympics. The way we are playing, there is no reason

:53:44.:53:46.

why we can't push the other guys. I am well up for a medal.

:53:47.:53:51.

And we are very glad to hear it! Ellis and Langridge through to the

:53:52.:53:56.

semifinals, fantastic performance and they have the Chinese bought

:53:57.:54:01.

seeds tomorrow. If you have just come in, let me tell you about a

:54:02.:54:07.

significant happening in women's sport. Sophie Hitchon breaking the

:54:08.:54:12.

record in the hammer with the last throw of the competition to take the

:54:13.:54:16.

bronze medal and the love Brad Thrower, Burnley born, fourth at the

:54:17.:54:21.

World Championships last year, she has struck a blow here, the first

:54:22.:54:25.

field event medal for a British woman for 28 years. I have said

:54:26.:54:32.

before, training is going really, really well, so the distance really

:54:33.:54:37.

wasn't expected but to get a bronze medal, I'm just over the moon. You

:54:38.:54:42.

set the tone of early on with a really big throw, you got in a medal

:54:43.:54:46.

positions early, so we thinking, this could be my day? You never know

:54:47.:54:51.

in hammer. The girls are all throwing really well and they can

:54:52.:54:54.

always produce their best in the last round so I didn't expect that

:54:55.:54:58.

all it would hold third, I just knew I wanted to throw further and try to

:54:59.:55:03.

execute my technique. Missed it on a few but I knew it was going to go if

:55:04.:55:07.

I kept it going. The last round, you had dropped into fifth by that

:55:08.:55:11.

point, what were you thinking of going into the circle? Just that

:55:12.:55:16.

this is it, last chance, do what I have done in training again and

:55:17.:55:19.

again and again and just execute. I did it and I can't believe it. When

:55:20.:55:25.

the distance went up on the board, what was your reaction? I had to

:55:26.:55:31.

double take a little bit because, you know, it was just incredible and

:55:32.:55:35.

to see the number three there and a national record, I couldn't be

:55:36.:55:39.

happier. And by coach has stuck with me through the bad times and

:55:40.:55:43.

obviously the good times, but thank you for everyone at Moffett Field

:55:44.:55:50.

for helping me, everyone at home, my mum, my family, the national lottery

:55:51.:55:53.

and all of the players, we couldn't do it without you and I can't

:55:54.:55:57.

believe it, it has been an amazing day. It is also an amazing day for

:55:58.:56:02.

women's throwing, we have won medals in javelin before but never in

:56:03.:56:05.

Olympic history anything like this, so it is a big step forward and you

:56:06.:56:08.

will probably inspire a lot of people, do you think? I definitely

:56:09.:56:14.

hope so. I don't even think about it when I step in the circle, I just

:56:15.:56:18.

try and do what I can do best but hopefully if I can inspire a few

:56:19.:56:22.

people to take up hammer, it will be brilliant. I know your coach was as

:56:23.:56:27.

animated as you, you can have a look at his reaction just down here. He

:56:28.:56:33.

is the best ever! And Polly behind him, my goodness. He is the best

:56:34.:56:37.

coach ever, I could never do this without him. He has stuck by me

:56:38.:56:41.

through times when I was ready to just not do it any more and we both

:56:42.:56:47.

knew that I had it in me and for him to be there is just amazing. I am

:56:48.:56:52.

glad I can do it for him as well as me at this point. I know it is

:56:53.:56:57.

emotional for you, congratulations again. Celebrate with all the team

:56:58.:57:01.

tonight, well done. I will, thank you very much. I love you, Mum And

:57:02.:57:07.

Dad! It is official, she loves you and we love Sophie two, finishing in

:57:08.:57:15.

a medal place, the winner finishing over 80 minutes, sensational stop.

:57:16.:57:18.

Let me remind you of some of the other headlines on day ten.

:57:19.:57:25.

Great Britain's gold rush has continued with Charlotte Dujardin

:57:26.:57:29.

and successfully defending her individual dressage title. She takes

:57:30.:57:33.

her tally to three Olympic gold medals.

:57:34.:57:36.

And as we have seen, Sophie Hitchon saving her best till last in the

:57:37.:57:40.

hammer final, breaking the British record. An historic bronze, the

:57:41.:57:44.

first British women to -- woman to win a medal in that event.

:57:45.:57:48.

Mark Cavendish remains on course to win his first Olympic medal, lying

:57:49.:57:52.

third after four events of the men's on the with the final two to come

:57:53.:57:56.

this evening in the velodrome. In the women's on the, Laura Trott

:57:57.:58:00.

is bidding to become the first British woman to win four gold

:58:01.:58:05.

medals. She is first out of the opening scratch race.

:58:06.:58:11.

And with giblet blew away the others in the steeplechase -- Jebet. But

:58:12.:58:16.

she agonisingly missed out on the world record by less than a second.

:58:17.:58:21.

And in case you were wondering, has Charlotte Dujardin cause for a

:58:22.:58:26.

double celebration? Yes, she has, she has just been speaking

:58:27.:58:28.

afterwards and this is her other half, Dean Golding, who put the sign

:58:29.:58:33.

on the chest, "Can we get married now?" And in the press conference,

:58:34.:58:38.

she said, "He just wants me to say yes. He has already asked me to

:58:39.:58:43.

marry him, I have a ring on my finger. He is such a banana, he has

:58:44.:58:48.

made it so public, I have to do it now." So double celebrations,

:58:49.:58:52.

Charlotte, are not just the gold medal but on your engagement and I

:58:53.:58:56.

am sure champagne corks will be popping all over the Olympic

:58:57.:59:00.

Village. From the afternoon team, goodbye for now.

:59:01.:59:02.
