level to give it, and they give it a seven. That still allows him to have

:00:00.:00:08.

quite a big total. It does. A lot of gymnasts will stand on their feet as

:00:09.:00:17.

goal 14.9, 15, which was similar to what he scored earlier. Radivilov's

:00:18.:00:23.

score is in and he gets an average of 15.0 33.

:00:24.:00:32.

Now Kenzo Shirai, we have seen the rotating bolts, this one will all be

:00:33.:00:40.

about twisting. And this is likely to be another first, the 6.4 is the

:00:41.:00:49.

three and a half twists. That was very clean, the only did three in

:00:50.:00:55.

qualification, we saw him training this, and that was a fantastic

:00:56.:01:03.

effort. Huge disappointment on the floor for Kenzo Shirai, trying to

:01:04.:01:08.

put that right here. What will be the story with his second vault?

:01:09.:01:18.

That was mesmerising. I have seen do the itching to with quite a lot of

:01:19.:01:23.

steps out of it, but the torque he gets there is a small step, that is

:01:24.:01:31.

unbelievable. -- I have seen him do the Yurchenko. But that will be a

:01:32.:01:40.

Shirai. Really has been a special championships, hasn't it? We have

:01:41.:01:45.

had a real celebration, Chris. We have watched two vaulters push the

:01:46.:01:54.

boundaries and produced their own new elements. We have talked about

:01:55.:01:58.

the difficulty, and building the score, trying to achieve the highest

:01:59.:02:03.

execution possible, but because of that the code book is open. 15.833

:02:04.:02:13.

for his first vault. Needs to be different, Sue Bird two and a half

:02:14.:02:19.

twists from the half turn, he is so clean. -- superb. Not the highest of

:02:20.:02:27.

starred scores, 5.6, but it was clean, and he has a huge score for

:02:28.:02:33.

the first vault, so the average will still be big, at there challenging.

:02:34.:02:38.

This is his first Olympics, 19 years old, and he has never meddled in

:02:39.:02:50.

vault at the World Championships. That was so clean, a small split on

:02:51.:02:55.

the horse, the judges will deduct for that. Legs were crossed in the,

:02:56.:03:03.

dead central, and a tiny hop on landing. He was spinning so fast,

:03:04.:03:08.

the judges would never have seen that, surely, Chris. No, they

:03:09.:03:13.

probably won't, that is very well performed. Two and a half twists,

:03:14.:03:19.

really pleased to see him perform well, he was so disappointed with

:03:20.:03:24.

himself on the floor. Shirai goes into the lead with an average of

:03:25.:03:31.

15.4 99, that is a massive score. But two very good vaulters to come.

:03:32.:03:42.

First up is Marian Dragulescu, four times world champion, this is his

:03:43.:03:47.

fourth Olympics now, and he will be doing his trademark vault, the

:03:48.:03:52.

handspring, two somersaults with a half turn on the end. Got an Olympic

:03:53.:04:02.

medal in Athens 2004. He was second at the World Championships last

:04:03.:04:10.

year. Back from retirement. Fifth highest qualifier. And when we first

:04:11.:04:14.

saw this, we thought it was absolutely unbelievable. It is still

:04:15.:04:21.

excellent, really good, he landed bolt upright, just that pace, very

:04:22.:04:27.

impressive. Yeah, that is the Dragulescu. Just practising his

:04:28.:04:34.

entry that they have to do for the second bolt, because they have to be

:04:35.:04:38.

different. The high tea gets on that. It is amazing, he manages to

:04:39.:04:49.

kick out and spot the landing. What is impressive about this vault, the

:04:50.:04:53.

legs are hardly split. A lot of gymnasts will do the Dragulescu, but

:04:54.:04:58.

their legs will be split, and that is why it is the Dragulescu, and he

:04:59.:05:08.

performs it the best. Lovely style now over the years, we have seen him

:05:09.:05:11.

struggle a bit with the second vault. Came in early and watch

:05:12.:05:18.

training, and he did several of those, he obviously feels good. The

:05:19.:05:25.

height the gymnasts can get off this platform is really quite amazing.

:05:26.:05:33.

15.266, the second-highest score we have seen so far in this men's vault

:05:34.:05:39.

final, so he is posting a 6.2 difficulty now, this one is slightly

:05:40.:05:46.

harder the last. Well, he is being ambitious, he needs to control the

:05:47.:05:51.

half turn, beautifully performed, two and a half twists Bath. That is

:05:52.:05:57.

the best series of vaults I have ever seen him do. For a 6.2

:05:58.:06:05.

difficulty, to put in that sort of execution, and this gymnasts just

:06:06.:06:08.

loves competition, he loves to feel the crowd and react. He does. With

:06:09.:06:15.

this vault, you can quite easily miss the turn, with the flip and the

:06:16.:06:20.

handspring, but you will see at here, he gets so much height, I knew

:06:21.:06:25.

he would make it around. Almost sticks the landing as well.

:06:26.:06:36.

Quite tidy, not many deductions, not much for them to take off. This will

:06:37.:06:46.

be a big challenge, I think. Can he get up into the medals? At this

:06:47.:06:51.

stage there are still four gymnasts to go. What does the future hold for

:06:52.:06:59.

Marian Dragulescu and his Olympic dreams? He is in second at the

:07:00.:07:15.

moment, 15.449. 15.449 equals Shirai as an average, but because of the

:07:16.:07:19.

execution, Shirai is in the lead at the moment. But for how long? The

:07:20.:07:34.

two time world champion. Double fightback, massive vault. The speed

:07:35.:07:42.

with which he rotates! He did the dragon rescue in the pike position.

:07:43.:07:46.

The Pike gets a little bit more difficulty than the tuck. He split

:07:47.:08:01.

his legs just before the half turn, quite a big step on landing, but a

:08:02.:08:06.

6.4 difficulty score, so he has got room for the deductions. When you

:08:07.:08:16.

are coming from such a huge height with so much rotation, the forces

:08:17.:08:26.

going through the legs, no surprise they are having to take a step.

:08:27.:08:33.

Well, Ri Se Gwan has another 6.4 in the locker. 15.616 for his first

:08:34.:08:44.

vault. If you post another difficulty score of 6.4, which we

:08:45.:08:48.

think he is going to do, he is going to have an advantage as far as the

:08:49.:08:55.

difficulty is concerned. So this is all about execution, can Ri Se Gwan

:08:56.:09:01.

from the peoples of career vault himself into the lead? And we have

:09:02.:09:08.

seen him do this vault before, and I think it is amazing. Full twist off,

:09:09.:09:16.

that was a great landing for the most complex vault you will ever

:09:17.:09:24.

see. He has hardly any time to spot that landing, and somehow he

:09:25.:09:29.

managed! I thought he had stuck it for a minute, I think the landing

:09:30.:09:33.

shocked him, but I think that will be enough to move him into first

:09:34.:09:47.

place. Let's just see the timing on this. The high tea gets allowed him

:09:48.:09:58.

to actually perform it, there will be another in this final, and it

:09:59.:10:02.

will come down to who landed best. -- the height he gets. The way he

:10:03.:10:08.

drops his shoulder in midair to get the turn in, then the back

:10:09.:10:12.

somersault over the top, and then there is the floor very quickly! The

:10:13.:10:16.

ability to know where you are to perform like that, just unbelievable

:10:17.:10:30.

awareness needed. So he is in the lead with 15.691, he leads Kenzo

:10:31.:10:39.

Shirai, who is in second, Dragulescu is in third place. A 6.0 difficulty,

:10:40.:10:49.

here we go, the double Tsukahara, and really these gymnasts are

:10:50.:10:51.

performing these hugely difficult skills with nonchalance. It is mind

:10:52.:10:58.

blowing how they are managing to achieve this, at this level, under

:10:59.:11:05.

this pressure! And how quickly it is over, Dan. The vault final can go

:11:06.:11:10.

either way, we see quite a lot of gymnasts going for the big vaults,

:11:11.:11:15.

but today everyone is hitting them, it shows how well-prepared they are

:11:16.:11:23.

for this final. And this is what you want, this is a final where

:11:24.:11:28.

everybody is getting through, nobody is falling, so this gold medal is

:11:29.:11:32.

going to be won properly. That is really what you want from every

:11:33.:11:36.

final, and actually it is what we have had in this Olympics. All the

:11:37.:11:42.

gymnasts have been in such good shape. So much so that it has taken

:11:43.:11:51.

us by surprise, hasn't it? It has indeed. 15.375, fourth at the

:11:52.:12:01.

Olympics in London. He has said he wants to retire after this Olympics,

:12:02.:12:05.

so this could well be the last vault we see from Tomas Gonzalez. And with

:12:06.:12:13.

a difficulty of only 5.6, he needs to be absolutely perfect in

:12:14.:12:17.

execution. The step on landing, but it was lovely and tight through the

:12:18.:12:24.

air. Bad is it, he gives a big wave, that is potentially his swansong,

:12:25.:12:28.

and what a way to finish a wonderful career. -- that is it. 30 years old,

:12:29.:12:33.

you don't blame him for sitting down, do you?! No! I think that

:12:34.:12:43.

vault was really well performed. You see here his legs locked together,

:12:44.:12:48.

toes pointed, opens out for the landing, it looks like the flaw

:12:49.:12:52.

found them, rather than he found the flaw, which is why he took a step.

:12:53.:13:02.

-- floor. In fact, his ankles buckled a little bit, didn't they?

:13:03.:13:11.

He is old is in, 15.137 for Tomas Gonzalez. -- the result is in.

:13:12.:13:19.

Execution of 9.3. We have enjoyed watching him vault over his career,

:13:20.:13:31.

happy retirement! Oleg Verniaiev now, silver in the all-around

:13:32.:13:35.

competition, seventh highest qualifier in vault, European

:13:36.:13:42.

Championship this year. And he was just outside the medals at the World

:13:43.:13:45.

Championships last year, starting off with a vault, as you concede, on

:13:46.:13:51.

the right-hand side, a difficulty of 6.0. Quite a slight gymnasts to be a

:13:52.:13:59.

specialist vaulter, but so powerful, and the times it beautifully. We

:14:00.:14:04.

have seen that more than once, and he landed on the floor, it didn't

:14:05.:14:12.

hit him, Dan. That was almost perfect, and we have seen him do

:14:13.:14:17.

that time and again, he will soon have to upgraded to the pike

:14:18.:14:23.

position, because he finds it too easy. He does a full somersault by

:14:24.:14:31.

the time he is level. Asean opens into the half turn, he has got so

:14:32.:14:35.

much time to spot the landing. -- as he opens. So where would you deduct,

:14:36.:14:48.

cowboy? May be 0.3 there, and a slight wobble on landing, maybe 0.1,

:14:49.:14:54.

but apart from that, not much else that I could see. Gymnasts often

:14:55.:14:59.

bring their own chalk from their own gyms back home. Verniaiev, 15.400,

:15:00.:15:10.

six on the difficulty, 9.4 on execution, up with the highest

:15:11.:15:13.

scores on execution that we have had here. The penultimate gymnast.

:15:14.:15:35.

And the less favoured vault. Needs to concentrate. Super triple twist.

:15:36.:15:46.

He has such a repertoire. Multiple somersaulting, multiple twists in

:15:47.:15:57.

the second one. Third place at the moment. There was quite a big hop on

:15:58.:16:05.

his landing. It is a really nice triple twist in the air. He could

:16:06.:16:14.

have moved into the medals, but I think he is just going to be

:16:15.:16:19.

outside. He doesn't quite bring his arms out with authority. You have to

:16:20.:16:23.

see the gymnast come out of the twist. As we say, your arms are

:16:24.:16:28.

liked your parachute to come out and kill the twist, ready from landing.

:16:29.:16:36.

He didn't do it with authority. He's such a fabulous all-round gymnast,

:16:37.:16:40.

though. And he has still more finals to come here. Tomorrow, we have Nile

:16:41.:16:49.

Wilson for Great Britain and Amy Tinkler on floor. Verniaiev is equal

:16:50.:17:14.

fourth. 15.316 is the average. The last gymnast to go is the

:17:15.:17:18.

second-highest qualifier, the gymnast that has just taken a bronze

:17:19.:17:23.

medal on rings. Got a silver in London. Two times champion in

:17:24.:17:33.

Europe, Denis Ablyazin. This could be very impressive. This lad is the

:17:34.:17:39.

definition of power. Can he contain it?

:17:40.:17:52.

A step forwards, which means he was slightly under rotating. But

:17:53.:17:58.

unbelievable vaulting from these guys. It was the same fault that Ri

:17:59.:18:05.

Se-gwang performed. I don't think it was quite as good. It comes down to

:18:06.:18:10.

the landing. There was a big step forward, so everything is now on

:18:11.:18:17.

this next vault. To make sure he lands and pushes into the medals. He

:18:18.:18:24.

is looking for a score over 15.449. Quite a deep landing. His chest was

:18:25.:18:47.

low. So I think the execution will be lower than Ri Se-gwang. 15.6,

:18:48.:19:01.

down a tent on Ri Se-gwang's. -- down a tent.

:19:02.:19:22.

A big step, but I am so impressed with these gymnasts' vaulting. They

:19:23.:19:33.

are not doing the same type of fault. Ablyazin is not holding back.

:19:34.:19:42.

Does he have another medal to go with the bronze he just got on

:19:43.:19:47.

rings? I think he is going to scrape into the medals. I don't think he

:19:48.:19:51.

will be in first. A step backwards here on the landing. That will keep

:19:52.:19:57.

him away from first. It will be close, but he might just sneak in.

:19:58.:20:11.

He might sneak in on start difficulty. Can Marian Dragulescu

:20:12.:20:28.

hold on? Well-nigh Ri Se-gwang script a metal? Ri Se-gwang wins!

:20:29.:20:36.

Here's your Olympic vault champion. Two times world champion and now

:20:37.:20:41.

Olympic champion. The 31-year-old from the People's Republic of Korea.

:20:42.:20:56.

And Kenzo Shirai finally gets a medal in the individual apparatus

:20:57.:21:00.

finals. After his upset on floor, he takes the bronze. Marian Dragulescu

:21:01.:21:10.

will finish in fourth. We knew it was going to be big, Dan. We did. I

:21:11.:21:16.

was really impressed with Kenzo's three and a half twists. If he can

:21:17.:21:22.

up his second vault to a triple twist, he could be challenging for

:21:23.:21:29.

the gold. Well, we have seen two vaults being named here at the

:21:30.:21:35.

Olympics. Impressive stuff from Abliazin as well. Two finals, two

:21:36.:21:43.

medals. Not quite as impressive as two finals, two gold medals! Not

:21:44.:21:50.

quite! Ri Se-gwang. Two incredible vaults. Highest qualifier, and

:21:51.:21:56.

victorious yet again. The next final in store for you will

:21:57.:22:26.

be the women's bin. That will be after the men's medal ceremony. --

:22:27.:22:45.

the women's beam. Denis Ablyazin had a celebration and a half. We had

:22:46.:22:49.

traditional Greek dancing going on. The Brazilians were going crazy, and

:22:50.:22:55.

this place was just dumping. At that point, Abliazin legs it out of the

:22:56.:23:00.

arena and then refocuses for vault. And he certainly did a good job

:23:01.:23:15.

getting that silver medal. The floor area today makes way for the medal

:23:16.:23:21.

podium. We were saying what a celebration it has been for

:23:22.:23:26.

gymnastics here. There was a really good feeling in the Rio Olympic

:23:27.:23:31.

Arena around gymnastics. I think everybody is mesmerised, so

:23:32.:23:34.

impressed by how people are pushing themselves to the limit. Absolutely.

:23:35.:23:42.

It seems obvious to say that everyone is going to peak for the

:23:43.:23:47.

Olympics, but the gymnasts have had two long days of competition, and it

:23:48.:23:53.

was really competitive. Very difficult to make the top eight on

:23:54.:23:58.

any apparatus. And every gymnast really looked in tremendous shape.

:23:59.:24:03.

So if you made the top eight, for a lot of gymnasts, that is the big

:24:04.:24:06.

challenge, never mind if you medal or whatever. You come here to make

:24:07.:24:12.

the final. And the finals are showing just that. Everyone is at

:24:13.:24:18.

the top of their game. They are, and the consistency I am seeing at such

:24:19.:24:21.

a high level is what is impressing me the most. We are not seeing many

:24:22.:24:30.

falls at all. This was the vault you were so impressed with. Yes, to fit

:24:31.:24:34.

in three and a half twists is incredible. We know he is renowned

:24:35.:24:42.

for twisting from this vault work, but that is incredible. And it is a

:24:43.:24:46.

blind landing. He drops his shoulder. It is not as if the floor

:24:47.:24:51.

is coming to him. A very challenging vault to land. It is, because there

:24:52.:24:55.

is hardly any time to spot the landing. You are literally twisting

:24:56.:25:01.

and then the floor is there. That is probably one of the best he has ever

:25:02.:25:10.

landed. Abliazin was just a bit short on this. You wonder whether

:25:11.:25:16.

that was a result of having won a medal on rings and being rushed into

:25:17.:25:24.

this final. Well, he gets himself a silver medal. Ri Se-gwang picks the

:25:25.:25:28.

gold, Denis Ablyazin silver and Kenzo Shirai twists his way to

:25:29.:25:30.

bronze. It takes four years of hard work to

:25:31.:26:59.

be an Olympian, and it is great to say the hard work is paying off for

:27:00.:27:03.

the British athletes. 40 medals already at Rio 2016 and still a few

:27:04.:27:07.

days to come. As you can see at the Olympic Park, the breeze has picked

:27:08.:27:12.

up. We have wind here. If you don't mind showing them the trees swaying

:27:13.:27:16.

in the evening sunlight here, actually, that spindly thing is not

:27:17.:27:19.

the greatest demonstration, but you can see that the wind has picked up.

:27:20.:27:26.

That would have been much more helpful at the sailing like, whether

:27:27.:27:31.

sailing has been postponed for the day -- the sailing like. We will

:27:32.:27:35.

talk about that later, but Great Britain are guaranteed a sailing

:27:36.:27:38.

gold medal for Giles Scott. But he has to finish is run in the Finn

:27:39.:27:42.

tomorrow before he is awarded the medal. He is obviously feeling good

:27:43.:27:46.

about it and earlier he caught up with Shirley Robertson.

:27:47.:27:50.

Giles, you are always level-headed, no emotion. But I saw emotion today.

:27:51.:27:57.

Yeah, you did. You're right, I do try and stay level-headed. There was

:27:58.:28:04.

no way I could have done that after that race. It got the better of me.

:28:05.:28:10.

It really did dawn on me what my coach have put together over the

:28:11.:28:16.

last four years. It was an amazingly special moment. Four years ago, you

:28:17.:28:20.

watched Ben Ainslie win his gold medal, knowing you were world-class

:28:21.:28:25.

and were just short of gold. Four years later, it's yours. Yeah, it

:28:26.:28:31.

is. Four years ago, I have said it time and time again, it was a pretty

:28:32.:28:36.

dark place. But what we have managed to do from building on that

:28:37.:28:39.

disappointment is put a great campaign together and come here to

:28:40.:28:43.

Rio and win in the way I have, it is just amazing. We have had such

:28:44.:28:52.

amazing history in the Finn. To be able to put my name alongside the

:28:53.:28:59.

others is very special to me. You're about to hit the shore. This is a

:29:00.:29:05.

lovely moment before you hit the shore and the media are there in

:29:06.:29:09.

your life will change forever. Yeah, I'm not sure my life will change for

:29:10.:29:14.

ever! I hope it won't. But the Olympic Games has been such a huge

:29:15.:29:17.

part of my life ever since I was a teenager. It's been ten years of

:29:18.:29:25.

solid work to get here. I am just really proud. Everybody assumed you

:29:26.:29:32.

would win this gold. Summarise how hard it has been? Yeah, it's a funny

:29:33.:29:37.

thing to come to a regatta as big as the Olympic Games and have everyone

:29:38.:29:43.

telling you it's a sure thing. It's not just the media, but its people

:29:44.:29:48.

around you and people in your team who just assume you're going to

:29:49.:29:54.

deliver. Actually delivering is not as simple as people think. It's

:29:55.:29:59.

incredibly stressful, hard work. But once you manage it, it's incredible.

:30:00.:30:07.

Well, you won it in style. You have to compete in the medal race, but no

:30:08.:30:12.

one can beat you. Giles Scott, Olympic champion of 2016,

:30:13.:30:13.

congratulations. That smile will be even more huge

:30:14.:30:23.

when he takes to the water for his gold medal. No sailing so far today,

:30:24.:30:28.

we will bring you up to date on whether they can get out later, we

:30:29.:30:31.

will cease of the British guys in action. It is gusty down here at the

:30:32.:30:36.

park! We will talk about the diving now, where things are going down at

:30:37.:30:42.

the Aquatics Centre, the first opportunity for us to see Jack

:30:43.:30:48.

Laugher, who you will be won the three metres springboard alongside

:30:49.:30:51.

Chris Meares a few days ago, who was going in the individual

:30:52.:30:54.

preliminaries. Before that, let's see Freddie Woodward going.

:30:55.:31:05.

Freddie Woodward of the city of Sheffield, his opening dive.

:31:06.:31:17.

Fantastic dive from Freddie, really nice, Tom Owen is at home, the city

:31:18.:31:22.

of Sheffield, they will be glued to the TV. Freddie is doing a great

:31:23.:31:30.

job, let's hope we can continue. Vertical entry, hardly any splash,

:31:31.:31:32.

good work. The arrival of Jack Laugher on the

:31:33.:31:46.

board, his opening dive will be coming up, a forward two and a half

:31:47.:31:53.

somersaults with two twists. I was wondering how he was going to get

:31:54.:31:58.

on, his first dive back from the amazing scenes in the pool where he

:31:59.:32:05.

and Chris Meares became Olympic champions, the first-ever Team GB

:32:06.:32:08.

diving Olympic champions, and that is very pool by his standards. --

:32:09.:32:17.

poor. Very short vertical, a tentative start from Jack Laugher,

:32:18.:32:21.

he will have to shake off what happened a few days ago and get into

:32:22.:32:27.

his diving, and I am sure he will, but that is not a good start. That

:32:28.:32:32.

was Jack Laugher taking to the springboard earlier, now we can go

:32:33.:32:37.

to the Aquatics Centre to see if the Olympic champion from the synchro

:32:38.:32:41.

event can better that score, back to the commentary team.

:32:42.:32:58.

Getting into the competition, albeit slightly slowly, we will see some

:32:59.:33:06.

bigger and more impressive stuff from this man as we go on. Here

:33:07.:33:17.

comes the marks for Hausding, they are a little bit slow sometimes. For

:33:18.:33:21.

those of you who have just joined us on BBC Four, Jack Laugher is 14th at

:33:22.:33:26.

the moment, Freddie Woodward is sixth, still quite a few to go in

:33:27.:33:34.

round one, and also we have Knight-Wisdom taking part. Morales

:33:35.:33:44.

looked OK on the take-off, and then he makes a bit of a botched job on

:33:45.:33:52.

the end. So all looking good, slightly cramped in the pike shape,

:33:53.:33:58.

misses his entry, misses his hands, does not get his grab, and the marks

:33:59.:34:09.

will reflect that. The first male Jamaican dive ever, night wisdom

:34:10.:34:17.

from the city of Leeds. -- Knight-Wisdom. Morales, who has just

:34:18.:34:25.

gone, 17. You can hear the wind whistling around the commentary box,

:34:26.:34:30.

it was sedate when we started, but it has got up. Andrea Chiarabini,

:34:31.:34:35.

back two and a half somersaults with pike. The best school so far is from

:34:36.:34:45.

the Chinese. This is a second Olympic Games, he's only 21, he did

:34:46.:34:50.

not make it through the preliminaries four years ago. He is

:34:51.:34:54.

four years more experienced now, beat a little close to the diving

:34:55.:34:59.

board, and it is a fine line between getting far enough away not being so

:35:00.:35:06.

far that you call yourself a lack of control. The dive to the middle of

:35:07.:35:10.

the pool is very difficult to control, so we are seeing some

:35:11.:35:17.

faltering, some mixed stuff. I mean, it is really windy, as you can here.

:35:18.:35:26.

Look at him leaning into it a little bit, Ipsen, it is pretty windy on

:35:27.:35:31.

the boards as well. We have seen someone hit the board, we move on to

:35:32.:35:41.

Ipsen of the USA. Nice stuff from Ipsen, what the judges are looking

:35:42.:35:47.

for is vertical entry with hardly any splash or no splash for maximum

:35:48.:35:51.

points. Seven judges, the two highest and lowest are deleted to

:35:52.:35:56.

leave three scores which are then totalled, multiplied by the degree

:35:57.:36:00.

of difficulty to give you the dive total. Every single one of these

:36:01.:36:08.

counts, and Ipsen's scores are as follows. Remember, the ones with the

:36:09.:36:15.

lines through do not count. The total is multiplied by the degree of

:36:16.:36:20.

difficulty, hence we arrived at 72 for Christian Ipsen. Now the

:36:21.:36:29.

Canadian, Gagne, back two and a half somersaults with pike. It is a nice

:36:30.:36:39.

dive, we have had three on the trot now, back two and they have in the

:36:40.:36:45.

pike position. Good board work, into the pike shape, just Bananaman a

:36:46.:36:50.

little bit, arching through his lower back excessively. And over he

:36:51.:37:01.

goes. Yes, the marks for Gagne, then, 63, another easy computation.

:37:02.:37:09.

That is not sharp with the upper echelon, Jack Laugher, he had a

:37:10.:37:17.

disappointing opening. Oliver Dingley, formally of England, now of

:37:18.:37:21.

Ireland, 66. Anyone got a parachute? The wind is really getting up, look

:37:22.:37:31.

at that! Yes, a punchy start from Rosset, it

:37:32.:37:44.

coming out with this dive, which is 3.4 degrees of difficulty, but it is

:37:45.:37:52.

actually a tough dive, you do not have the step like you do on the

:37:53.:37:58.

reverse, so it is a tough dive. He likes to open with it, throwing down

:37:59.:38:03.

his marker, many of his fellow competitors started with easier

:38:04.:38:10.

dives, a game of tactics, 74.8 FOI him. That puts into fifth place at

:38:11.:38:16.

the moment. Now, my colleagues from Tunnel 7 are not very confident

:38:17.:38:19.

about the Australians going through the final. -- Channel 7. Not even

:38:20.:38:28.

confident about getting to the competition at the moment! They do

:38:29.:38:32.

not believe Grant Nel will make it into the top 12. Nice work, well, I

:38:33.:38:40.

am going to back him if his fellow countrymen do not think he has got

:38:41.:38:47.

what it takes, 28 years old, he will be putting in as much effort as

:38:48.:38:52.

humanly possible to get six goods dives in. That is one out of one for

:38:53.:38:58.

now, he is going to get eights on this, even though he could tidy up

:38:59.:39:01.

that pike shape, he is a little bit cramped. 74.40, at the moment there

:39:02.:39:14.

is no power in Sydney, so they are not going anywhere! They may well be

:39:15.:39:18.

taking the BBC coverage, which is probably illegal, but they will be

:39:19.:39:24.

doing it anyway. And to Kvasha of the Ukraine, inward three and a half

:39:25.:39:32.

somersaults with tuck. Jack Laugher has disappeared off my screen, he is

:39:33.:39:36.

that far down at the moment, with another four to go.

:39:37.:39:44.

It is super windy. Yeah, OK, that wind is really picking up, in fact

:39:45.:39:55.

there is paperwork flying around the place, packets of crisps being blown

:39:56.:40:02.

off the media things! It is all pretty heavy. In fact, this is going

:40:03.:40:08.

to make this competition really, really interesting. So the referee

:40:09.:40:17.

will, well, I presume the referee will be OK with what has happened,

:40:18.:40:23.

which means Kvasha has said the wind is picking up, I need to step

:40:24.:40:27.

forward because I am balancing on my tip toes. He is taking his time. He

:40:28.:40:32.

does not want the wind to blow him over the board, because he might

:40:33.:40:39.

edit like Zakharov did at the beginning of the round.

:40:40.:40:46.

Has done a good job on that dive under the circumstances, shakes his

:40:47.:40:56.

head, you did not see it, but I did, watching ever live. The wind pushing

:40:57.:41:01.

him back on the board, OK, hang on a second. Anyway, this is his attempt,

:41:02.:41:07.

the dive is good, aerial work is excellent, marginal over rotation.

:41:08.:41:11.

Well, actually, it is a bit more than marginal. That is windy! So

:41:12.:41:21.

71.40, not as much damage as it could have been. Considering he had

:41:22.:41:29.

to go for a second time, that is OK. Now onto Benedetti of Italy, really

:41:30.:41:37.

tough at the moment to get yourself composed. Certainly to execute dives

:41:38.:41:44.

of this complexity, a lower degree of difficulty, 3.0. Very neat and

:41:45.:41:53.

tidy, very precise, beautiful rip entry, just a tad over vertical. A

:41:54.:41:59.

good take-off, maybe he could wait for the board a bit more to get even

:42:00.:42:03.

more height. See the ankles washing over, but he keeps the splashdown.

:42:04.:42:08.

He might sneak a few eights from the judges. Oh, then again, he might

:42:09.:42:16.

not. You got one, but it didn't count. Now, the Mexicans are in,

:42:17.:42:25.

making some noise, not anywhere near the noise we will get when the

:42:26.:42:28.

Brazilian goes in a couple of divers. This is Pacheco, we saw him

:42:29.:42:35.

in the sink row, this is in the individual. Inward three and a half

:42:36.:42:37.

somersaults with tuck, 3.4. Hanging onto my papers, sorry! My

:42:38.:42:54.

God, it is incredible at here! I am having more difficulty with the wind

:42:55.:42:59.

than he is. Beautiful take-off. He is going to get eight from the

:43:00.:43:04.

judges on this. Very neat and tidy, always has been, even up on the

:43:05.:43:09.

platform in the early part of his career, now on the springboard. He

:43:10.:43:12.

can be a little bit inconsistent sometimes. But he looks as though he

:43:13.:43:17.

is in good shape, eight is exactly what he will be wanting to open up

:43:18.:43:21.

his campaign. Certainly in good shape score wise, that is the

:43:22.:43:29.

second-best mark we have had behind Yuan Cao. Here comes Chavez Banda of

:43:30.:43:40.

Australia. Yeah, the former Mexican, who made the switch to Australia in

:43:41.:43:45.

2015, and finally enough that his is Mexican coach, who is an Australian

:43:46.:43:56.

resident. Using the board, he is a one metre specialist, I have seen

:43:57.:44:00.

him compete well at that result, but it is not an Olympic event. So here

:44:01.:44:06.

he is, starting his three metres campaign, a bit of a grimace as he

:44:07.:44:11.

waits for the scores. It can be a tortuous process, but that would

:44:12.:44:17.

give him 64.6, and that is not widely raw is going around the

:44:18.:44:22.

Aquatics Centre, as we go to the man who was about to take to the board,

:44:23.:44:30.

the only Brazilian in the final, Cesar Castro. Whatever the judges

:44:31.:44:39.

say will not go down well with the crowd, they are never happy! The

:44:40.:44:43.

rounds off the first round of 29 divers, six rounds in total,

:44:44.:44:49.

remember. It is like being in a wind tunnel, so difficult for the divers.

:44:50.:44:59.

Very, very nicely executed dive, so easy, though, 3.0 degrees of

:45:00.:45:04.

difficulty, his fourth Olympic Games. He has always done this dive,

:45:05.:45:12.

33 years old, must be amazing to dive here right at the end of your

:45:13.:45:15.

career in front of your home crowd, and open up with 8.0, 8.5. This is a

:45:16.:45:23.

beauty, it is a low degree of difficulty, as are pretty much all

:45:24.:45:29.

of his dives compare to the movers and shakers in this contest.

:45:30.:45:37.

It is the first time the crowd have been happy with the judges' scoring,

:45:38.:45:44.

as they have already seen it. The wind is whipping up again. You

:45:45.:45:59.

can hear it, can't you? No home representation on the first page.

:46:00.:46:05.

Freddie Woodward qualified in tenth place. We are looking for Jack

:46:06.:46:16.

Laugher on page number three. But do not despair, because we have some

:46:17.:46:23.

big tariff dives from Jack Laugher still to come. Anybody got a kite?

:46:24.:46:32.

Perfect, I did a bit of kite surfing when I was in the Caribbean a few

:46:33.:46:36.

weeks ago. These are perfect conditions for it! In fact, can we

:46:37.:46:41.

pause this competition and let's all go kite surfing this afternoon. The

:46:42.:46:46.

problem is, as we knew it was going to be, with this being the first

:46:47.:46:49.

outdoor Olympic diving competition in Atlanta, Knowle, Barcelona. It

:46:50.:46:58.

got a bit windy in Atlanta, but Barcelona had an amazing pool. Says

:46:59.:47:03.

in Sydney, it has all been indoors. This is the first outdoor pool we

:47:04.:47:09.

have had for diving since 1996, kind of. That is why we have what we

:47:10.:47:14.

have, whistling into our microphones at the moment. But we will move on

:47:15.:47:15.

swiftly into Round 2. A good start for armoured and is ER

:47:16.:47:31.

Azman -- for Azman. He is such a dynamic athlete. They

:47:32.:48:00.

are like springs in his legs. He makes that dive so easily. If I was

:48:01.:48:05.

his coach, I would be encouraging him to do a back three and a half.

:48:06.:48:12.

He has tonnes of time. Very flamboyant. Hello, mother, can you

:48:13.:48:23.

hear me? It is like Istanbul. Yes, it is all like the European

:48:24.:48:40.

Championships from 1999. Woo Ha-ram is holding his head, because it is

:48:41.:48:43.

blowing about all over the place, as is the board. This is one of the

:48:44.:48:48.

problems and one of the side-effects of having an outdoor facility. It

:48:49.:48:53.

looks good when the weather is good, and now the pool is back to its

:48:54.:48:56.

original blue colour as well. You may have noticed that it is not

:48:57.:49:03.

green any more. Aquamarine. I told you, there is loads of stuff flying

:49:04.:49:04.

about. Well, the conditions are affecting

:49:05.:49:24.

the diving here. Woo Ha-ram had to stand down and deal with the wind.

:49:25.:49:28.

And he makes a bit of a shamble of the exit of his dive. The take-off

:49:29.:49:35.

is OK. But he has been put off by the wind. He comes out too early,

:49:36.:49:40.

Lance Short. His backside is sticking out, and the judges will

:49:41.:49:45.

not give him extra marks for that. Helen Skelton has nicked my pen!

:49:46.:49:52.

Give it back, thank you. That will be in the Daily Mail tomorrow!

:49:53.:50:02.

Now to the first of the two Chinese. Cao Yuan was our fifth placed diver

:50:03.:50:19.

after Round 1. That is a fantastic effort. His coat is saying he got

:50:20.:50:26.

blown back on the board. He is way back from the end. What a talent

:50:27.:50:38.

this young man is. Most people would have been turning into a frog in a

:50:39.:50:41.

blender, but he manages to hold it together. No faltering from Cao

:50:42.:50:54.

Yuan. They are not enjoying this competition. They are all shaking

:50:55.:50:57.

their heads when they come off the board and go into the Jacuzzi. It is

:50:58.:51:09.

turning into a bit of a hodgepodge. You have got all

:51:10.:51:19.

sorts happening. Landing right over the end, overcompensating. He leans

:51:20.:51:22.

into the wind a bit too much and ends up landing very short of

:51:23.:51:29.

vertical. There is all sorts going on here, trying to nail down TVs and

:51:30.:51:36.

all sorts. One commentator has lost his papers, among other things. The

:51:37.:51:45.

pen I have now retrieved from Hal -- Helen Skelton just went flying as

:51:46.:51:48.

well. But we are coping manfully here. It is hard in the trenches,

:51:49.:51:58.

you know. Now, here is a man who hit his feet on the board in the opening

:51:59.:52:01.

dive, and that gave him an awful mark. So he is playing a massive

:52:02.:52:11.

amount of catch up already. We are seeing the defending Olympic

:52:12.:52:16.

champion in all sorts of bother. He had a very unfortunate start when he

:52:17.:52:21.

hit the board. And this is another botched dive. Doesn't get the

:52:22.:52:26.

take-off he needs, lands flat on his back. Will this be the shock of the

:52:27.:52:38.

preliminary rounds? Feet so close again. You would think he would have

:52:39.:52:46.

learned from the first time. He ain't going through. Unless everyone

:52:47.:52:55.

else falters as badly as that. He has four dives remaining, but he

:52:56.:53:01.

would have to step up. Onto the Irishman, formerly of England,

:53:02.:53:12.

Oliver Dingley. Low degree of difficulty compared to some of his

:53:13.:53:17.

fellow competitors. But if you have a low degree of difficulty in these

:53:18.:53:22.

windy conditions, that is perfect. You don't have to run the risk of

:53:23.:53:29.

being blown around by the wind and making those dives even more

:53:30.:53:34.

difficult. The Olympic champion diving before him was way off the

:53:35.:53:35.

pace. 74.40 four Oliver Dingley. Very

:53:36.:54:08.

good. Now the other Russian. That is good. One of his easier dives. It is

:54:09.:54:21.

staggering to say a 3.4 is one of his easier dives. It is one of the

:54:22.:54:25.

lowest degrees of difficulty. Still very complicated. He is having a

:54:26.:54:35.

much better competition than his counterpart. He is right up there,

:54:36.:54:47.

just behind Cao Yuan. The second of the Chinese is coming up now, the

:54:48.:55:01.

current leader from Round 1, Chao. He will wait as long as he can

:55:02.:55:05.

before he takes this dive. He is a very experienced diver. It is so

:55:06.:55:18.

tough. Like walking the plank at the moment, isn't it? Not many athletes

:55:19.:55:24.

will be used to these conditions. It is difficult to find venues around

:55:25.:55:27.

the world that you can train outdoors. You can't just snap your

:55:28.:55:32.

fingers and get a gale force wind. It is not gale force, but it is

:55:33.:55:37.

windy. Some people take it a bit seriously. Or literally.

:55:38.:55:52.

And he fluffs it completely. These conditions are making it tough work.

:55:53.:56:05.

Ciao, world champion, finds it too windy to go -- Chao. He leaves too

:56:06.:56:13.

late, and over he goes. It is rare that we see mistakes of that

:56:14.:56:19.

magnitude from this young man. So, everyone is faltering. The leader

:56:20.:56:24.

after Round 1 will not be the leader after Round 2. Goodness gracious.

:56:25.:56:39.

Now to Knight-Wisdom. The tallest diver in this event. I don't know if

:56:40.:56:43.

that has a more adverse effect on him than on others. You mentioned

:56:44.:56:52.

his height. It is very difficult to spin around when there is a lot of

:56:53.:57:02.

you in height. Yona Knight-Wisdom would look more at home on a

:57:03.:57:06.

basketball court with his height and stature, and he is rocking and

:57:07.:57:08.

rolling here in the Olympic pool. He's listed at six foot but I think

:57:09.:57:31.

he is taller. Now, the first of the Brits, Freddie Woodward. He had a

:57:32.:57:41.

good first dive. Yes, he can back it up. That is superb diving. He has a

:57:42.:57:47.

lower degree of difficulty again. This is 3.1. He has a good take-off,

:57:48.:57:57.

lands right on the end. Uber-consistent. Washing slightly

:57:58.:58:05.

over vertical as he goes in. The two very steady dives from Freddie.

:58:06.:58:19.

Steady Freddie. At the moment, he is slotting into third place as we move

:58:20.:58:23.

on to a man who had problems at London 2012. No problems yet for

:58:24.:58:32.

Stephan Feck. He was close to the diving board. There is enough wind

:58:33.:58:39.

not to blow a diver back onto a diving board, but there is enough to

:58:40.:58:43.

tip you off balance. So Stephan Feck was leaning back a bit on his

:58:44.:58:49.

take-off, then uses his shoulders to move that diver. He is OK! Wow. You

:58:50.:58:57.

did a bit of Carmen Miranda there for us. Dangerous. He is shaking his

:58:58.:59:02.

head. The judges are not impressed either. So he moves in behind

:59:03.:59:12.

Dingley and Woodward. Now Jack Laugher. Not the greatest of starts

:59:13.:59:20.

for him. He has some big dives to come, but he wants the wind to

:59:21.:59:25.

slightly die down before he goes for his reverse three and a half

:59:26.:59:26.

somersaults with Tucker. Nice work, Jack. Just let the dive

:59:27.:59:43.

overrotates. It was a good take-off. He attacks the dive. He's just a

:59:44.:59:48.

little close to the diving board. Which is back with a little too much

:59:49.:59:54.

washing over. That is a better second diver from Jack. Lots of

:59:55.:59:59.

other divers are faltering, so there is no cause for concern yet. He's

very much in the mix and will continue to be over the next few

:00:04.:00:14.

rounds. Jack is in sixth place at the moment.

:00:15.:00:20.

Take their advice that Jack and Freddie will be all right, we'll be

:00:21.:00:26.

back here later on, it is all happening down there. The lights are

:00:27.:00:32.

on, help Tom Daley and Dan Goodfellow they said they did mind

:00:33.:00:36.

if it was wet, but this wind is something to content with and we

:00:37.:00:42.

will see if Jack and Freddie can get into the next round later on. It is

:00:43.:00:49.

so windy! That is affecting the beach volleyball, we will see the

:00:50.:00:54.

Brazilian number one pair in action and they are taking on the

:00:55.:01:00.

Americans, Dalhausser and Luchino, Dalhausser won gold in 2008 so it

:01:01.:01:06.

could be titled the Brazilian from crowd will no doubt cheer for the

:01:07.:01:11.

whole nation. We watch of the -- will watch the quarterfinal with

:01:12.:01:13.

Charlie Broome. Here's the opening server from

:01:14.:01:38.

Dalhausser. Again, they go across court. Much to the delight of the

:01:39.:01:50.

crowd. They keep their nose in front.

:01:51.:02:03.

Nice work from Dalhausser. His first contribution to the match.

:02:04.:02:23.

Of rogue shot from Bruno. That makes it 3-2 Brazil.

:02:24.:02:48.

For a moment I thought the set was too close but Lucena comes up with

:02:49.:02:59.

the play. This is the fifth meeting between the players in the last 12

:03:00.:03:02.

months. The previous format have been split 2-2.

:03:03.:03:19.

Here comes the first side switch, the first meeting came in August

:03:20.:03:27.

last year at the Longbridge grand slam. Dalhausser and Bruno won it

:03:28.:03:34.

and then at the world tour finals they met twice, the US came up with

:03:35.:03:42.

the win. -- Brazil won the first time. At the gold-medal match the

:03:43.:03:45.

Brazilians came through in straight sets and last meeting in Hamburg in

:03:46.:03:51.

June it was won by the Americans in straight sets.

:03:52.:04:13.

And the Brazilian pair left in the draw -- the only Brazilian pair left

:04:14.:04:22.

in the draw. Against the only American pair left in the draw. Good

:04:23.:04:31.

work from Lucy now again does -- good work from Lucena once again.

:04:32.:04:42.

Defensive play has not clicked in for either side. That is straight as

:04:43.:04:50.

Lucena, who takes it on the chest. He just depends him pins him -- he

:04:51.:05:17.

just pins Lucena. Brazil are getting lucky with the next call because

:05:18.:05:22.

it's one the advantage in the rally there direction.

:05:23.:05:45.

A fantastic deck, can they finish it off? They can't. This seen out with

:05:46.:05:52.

his own deck and get top of the net and it rolls out. -- dig.

:05:53.:06:05.

Dalhausser climbing into that one and the second side switch comes at

:06:06.:06:27.

a 8-6 to Brazil. Crosscourt was the only way to go

:06:28.:06:50.

but it has been kept alive. Dalhausser. Schmidt puts it away.

:06:51.:07:12.

Good work from Dalhausser to keep it alive, but it was allowing Cerruti

:07:13.:07:29.

to pounce. Good blocking. It is the Brazilian defence that clicks first.

:07:30.:07:58.

Set to close to the net. Cerruti cannot take advantage of it. Teams

:07:59.:08:11.

are able to challenge a decision if they don't like the call from the

:08:12.:08:18.

officials, but not taken on that occasion. Bruno perhaps suggesting

:08:19.:08:23.

the net had been touched by the opponent. Good serve. First ace of

:08:24.:08:32.

the match. Beautiful shot from Bruno. It means

:08:33.:09:06.

Brazil will have the lead at the technical time-out in two points,

:09:07.:09:18.

told the points currently 19. Nice disguise from Lucena. Shaped to go

:09:19.:09:28.

down the line and Bruno Webster is left and Lucena cut it back across

:09:29.:09:36.

the court. -- Bruno went to his. It is another ace and they make it a

:09:37.:09:41.

1-point game with a technical time-out. They had some success when

:09:42.:09:51.

serving at the Brazilian number one. He just gets it all wrong. It is as

:09:52.:09:57.

tight as it could be in a technical time-out. The Brazil team lead by

:09:58.:10:12.

one point four. The American pair first played together on the EBP.

:10:13.:10:21.

Let's look at the previous results. The surprise loss of the Austrian

:10:22.:10:27.

pair in their second match. Runners-up in their pool. The

:10:28.:10:33.

Americans had an incredible match against the Italian pair in their

:10:34.:10:41.

last pool C match. The third set, remembered his first 15 or two clear

:10:42.:10:43.

points, it went 24-22. Just saying the American pair first

:10:44.:11:11.

played together on AVP in 2003. They played together for a couple of

:11:12.:11:26.

years. Put it away nicely. Great serve down the middle. No

:11:27.:11:28.

communication. The American pair teamed up one year

:11:29.:11:42.

ago and while they've been in very good form since August last year.

:11:43.:11:45.

Good blocking. That is a very good block from

:11:46.:12:04.

Cerruti. The American pair won three of their first four events together.

:12:05.:12:21.

In long beach, Paul and -- Poland. Our time-out has been called. Brazil

:12:22.:12:34.

lead by four. It was just the two left side once, the other one was

:12:35.:12:38.

all right. I thought that was like a 70 feet off. No, I'm just talking

:12:39.:12:42.

about this one, one time. A lovely painting. The weather has

:12:43.:12:56.

completely changed since this morning. It is still very humid.

:12:57.:13:03.

Here we go. Schmidt serving 14-10. Great dig. And he goes crosscourt.

:13:04.:13:37.

To make it a 5-point game. Look at that, full-length to his left. And

:13:38.:13:48.

then comes up with the winner. In their previous match it was all

:13:49.:13:52.

about the routine, he was the matchwinner. -- Alison Cerutti.

:13:53.:14:11.

Bruno has played his part in this first set.

:14:12.:14:26.

Another superb effort for Bruno Oskar Schmidt but it doesn't come

:14:27.:14:43.

off. Since last year the Americans are second in their first tournament

:14:44.:14:51.

in long beach and second in a Sochi open on five occasions they have

:14:52.:14:52.

one. hospital in the The American pair

:14:53.:15:20.

are getting it back, back within three.

:15:21.:15:25.

That was just on the line. The Brazilian pair with an equally

:15:26.:15:41.

impressive record. Just on the line. Four second places, won finish. They

:15:42.:15:57.

go deep into competitions. Good play from Lucena.

:15:58.:16:20.

Brazil have got the decision and I think there would've been a

:16:21.:16:48.

challenge if they had got it. You can see Lucena touching the net with

:16:49.:16:52.

his rate hand. He touches it with his face on the way down as well.

:16:53.:17:02.

It is still alive. Alison at the net. Brings up six set points.

:17:03.:17:17.

Good work from Dalhausser to keep it alive and then tried to find the

:17:18.:17:23.

spike, treat -- straight into Alison.

:17:24.:17:35.

Six set points, the first on the serve. Lucena is there again.

:17:36.:17:44.

Monster block. Monster block from Alison and the first set goes the

:17:45.:17:48.

way of the Brazilian number one seeds. 21-14.

:17:49.:18:00.

Alison with four blocks in that first set and become at a crucial

:18:01.:18:13.

time. The first set 21-14 to Alison and Bruno Schmidt.

:18:14.:18:56.

Here is the view of Copacabana from the helicopter as this second set

:18:57.:19:07.

gets underway. The Americans are under the cosh having lost that

:19:08.:19:15.

opener. That was by seven points. They need to get the QuickStart in

:19:16.:19:18.

this second set. They are doing just that. Good block

:19:19.:19:34.

from Dalhausser. His first successful block of the match.

:19:35.:19:53.

Alison goes across court and Lucena judges it well and gets out of the

:19:54.:19:59.

way. The lob shot is out. Ideal start for

:20:00.:20:17.

the American beer. And at the Brazilians have had enough, they are

:20:18.:20:22.

taking an early time-out to take the Americans sales.

:20:23.:20:32.

Dalhausser and Lucena will be delighted with how this has started

:20:33.:20:40.

for them. That is the first set in statistics. It was very even until

:20:41.:20:50.

6-5 for Brazil. Technical time-out at 11-10 for Brazil. After the

:20:51.:20:55.

technical time-out, the Brazilian pair going on a couple of runs.

:20:56.:21:19.

15-10. And then 17-14. Until 21-14. It is Lucena serving from the

:21:20.:21:25.

right-hand side. Good dig from Lucena. Can he finish it off?

:21:26.:21:35.

Straight at Bruno. Fantastic from Dalhausser. Some great defence from

:21:36.:21:49.

both sides. In the end, it was the American pair that take the point

:21:50.:21:54.

with the little lob shot over the block.

:21:55.:22:07.

Alison with the delicate touch. He gets his team on the board in this

:22:08.:22:12.

second set. It has touched off Alison. 6-1 to

:22:13.:22:28.

the USA. Just on the line, wasn't it?

:22:29.:22:56.

Catching the outside of it. Alison with a fantastic serve. The

:22:57.:23:32.

Americans dealt with it. Lucena could not put the spike away. Good

:23:33.:23:39.

work from Dalhausser. Lovely spike down the line. Making

:23:40.:23:52.

it 7-3. Heavy touch from Lucena. The

:23:53.:24:40.

Brazilian pair are back with two. Bruno Schmidt will be serving.

:24:41.:25:04.

We are still hanging onto this early advantage, the Americans.

:25:05.:25:29.

That was one that Dalhausser knew he had a chance to block. Alison could

:25:30.:25:40.

only go crosscourt. When he made the block he could not control it.

:25:41.:25:50.

No mistake that I'm on the crosscourt spike.

:25:51.:26:42.

Four more points until the technical time-out. Good disguise from Lucena.

:26:43.:26:51.

Good angle across court. The wind is playing some havoc with

:26:52.:27:18.

the line. The server is white. From Dalhausser.

:27:19.:27:31.

Good shot that means that the American pair will have the

:27:32.:27:46.

advantage at the technical time-out. Can they be establish the five-point

:27:47.:27:50.

lead that they had early on in this set. One couple of points to play

:27:51.:27:56.

for before the time-out. That was long. From Alison.

:27:57.:28:17.

It is going to be a three-point lead because Alison finds the spike. The

:28:18.:28:30.

peers would return to their benches. The technical time-out is a chance

:28:31.:28:32.

to assess how the match going. The world champions come to be

:28:33.:28:47.

taking the first set. Just been made to work in this second set. These

:28:48.:28:53.

are blocks from the first set from Alison. Four of them. He has not

:28:54.:29:02.

found the defensive game in this second set just yet.

:29:03.:29:34.

The wind is starting to pick up once again. They are doing a good job,

:29:35.:29:44.

the American beer, they are keeping the crowd quiet. Once the code gets

:29:45.:29:53.

going at the Coliseum on the Copacabana, it plays a huge part for

:29:54.:30:00.

the Brazilian athlete. It is an incredible atmosphere.

:30:01.:30:25.

Fantastic work from first Bruno and then Alison.

:30:26.:30:37.

That is what their kids will love. -- they are capable of. Chasing down

:30:38.:30:47.

the lost cause just to keep the ball alive, almost in the bench and then

:30:48.:30:57.

comes up and you can see, Lucena Leaning right back, cannot control

:30:58.:31:02.

the Spike. Having said the American pair were doing well at keeping the

:31:03.:31:06.

crowd diet, it is the sort of points that keeps them going. Service

:31:07.:31:29.

fault. Great block. Second blog of the match, Dalhausser but he had the

:31:30.:31:40.

crosscourt, gets a left onto it. The start they had to this set will

:31:41.:31:45.

stand them in good stead. They still have four points.

:31:46.:31:55.

Lucena desperately trying to prevent his team-mate playing the ball.

:31:56.:32:21.

The crowd trying to get on Dalhausser, he comes up with the

:32:22.:33:18.

service to move the scoreboard on. This is the biggest need they've had

:33:19.:33:36.

so far, they are in total control of this second set. It looks like we

:33:37.:33:40.

will go to three. Lucena find the line as the American

:33:41.:33:58.

fans and team are enjoying that point, great dig from Lucena. This

:33:59.:34:07.

time he controls the adrenaline to find the back of the court.

:34:08.:34:22.

Straight at Lucena but cannot control the dig, it is wide. Eight

:34:23.:34:37.

set points for the USA. We will go to three sets in this first men's

:34:38.:34:41.

quarterfinal of the beach volleyball event.

:34:42.:34:55.

Just on the line. Dalhausser is having a look. You can see from the

:34:56.:35:17.

replay. It will be a challenge. A challenge by the USA to see if that

:35:18.:35:19.

ball was in. It was very close. That looks wide. I'm sure this angle

:35:20.:35:44.

will help us. It's definitely looks wide. The challenge was successful.

:35:45.:36:01.

And they have levelled this one up. 21-12. What turnaround in this

:36:02.:36:05.

match, having been totally outplayed in the first set they have raced

:36:06.:36:09.

through this second set to level it up. We have a touring costs -- coin

:36:10.:36:18.

toss. To see who will receive. Here is the second set in numbers.

:36:19.:37:16.

You can see the errors on the Brazilian pair, who get this third

:37:17.:37:21.

set underway and they start with an ace.

:37:22.:37:25.

In terms of sets between these two, Alison and Oskar Schmidt won the

:37:26.:37:38.

first one in long beach in August last year and the other true one a

:37:39.:37:50.

month later at the FI BP world tour finals. You don't want your

:37:51.:38:02.

opponents to get off to a flyer. Sites which every five points now in

:38:03.:38:09.

the third set. Good block. No technical time-out.

:38:10.:38:29.

Alison totally pumped for this third set. They just need to get the

:38:30.:38:39.

scoreboard ticking. There might be a time-out with a loose a lot of

:38:40.:38:47.

points. -- if they lose a lot. There is a challenge coming.

:38:48.:39:01.

The challenge is for the line call. Surely that was out. It looks very

:39:02.:39:09.

out from here. Lucena came across to try and double

:39:10.:39:31.

up down the line. There is too much on the Spike from Alison.

:39:32.:39:39.

Welcomer Bruno Oskar Schmidt has no right to get this first one back

:39:40.:40:13.

when he is miles out of court. That is the last point. It is the third

:40:14.:40:24.

touch to get it over the net and he is off the bottom of our screen. It

:40:25.:40:28.

was a phenomenal piece of skill. Again, he improvises because he is

:40:29.:40:50.

reaching for that ball, it is behind him. Somehow Bruno Oskar Schmidt

:40:51.:40:55.

controls it, look, he has to adjust and reach, he cannot put his full

:40:56.:40:57.

force behind the shot. Lucena needed to make sure of that

:40:58.:41:09.

because his team-mate was on his He finds the line. Nick Lucena with

:41:10.:42:13.

a wonderful piece of play. That is some angle he finds going on outside

:42:14.:42:15.

of the line. Dalhausser finds the Spike, I think

:42:16.:42:45.

it will be another challenge. No. No challenge by the looks of things.

:42:46.:42:54.

Back to another points now, the original set that went too close to

:42:55.:42:58.

the net allowed the Americans to get the upper hand.

:42:59.:43:10.

From Bruno and Lucena cannot keep it alive.

:43:11.:43:50.

Lucena cannot find there quiet touch -- the required. Lucena trying to be

:43:51.:43:59.

too cute. There they go again. No way! My

:44:00.:44:42.

word, what point! You just wonder if that is the point that will see

:44:43.:44:52.

Brazil over the line. That is a phenomenal dig from Bruno Oskar

:44:53.:44:56.

Schmidt. Alison does not give up on a lost cause, Bruno is at it again,

:44:57.:45:03.

and Alison sends the crowd here into delirium. Time-out called by the

:45:04.:45:12.

USA. They trail by four. That is the draw but the view is far

:45:13.:45:34.

more spectacular. We look towards Sugarloaf Mountain.

:45:35.:45:42.

It is party time on the Copacabana. The crowd are right into this one

:45:43.:45:47.

now. Heavy touch makes it a five point

:45:48.:46:07.

came in the race to 15 and it is definitely advantage Brazil now.

:46:08.:46:29.

Lucena finds the spike. They need a run of points do the USA.

:46:30.:46:50.

Alison is totally fired up for this one. He has absolutely launched

:46:51.:46:59.

himself into this crosscourt spike. It was overplayed by Lucena and

:47:00.:47:14.

Alison pounces to make it a six-point game. That could be the

:47:15.:47:21.

wind. You can see how heavy the wind as with the flags.

:47:22.:47:36.

The difference in this match has been the sets. The American pair

:47:37.:47:50.

raced out into a five-point lead in the second set. This third set in

:47:51.:48:11.

the race to 15, it becomes harder. Dalhausser get it at the second

:48:12.:48:12.

attempt. It is long. Two points away for a

:48:13.:48:49.

place in the semifinal. The Americans are up against it now.

:48:50.:49:03.

Alison hangs from an eternity to make the block and it is six match

:49:04.:49:08.

points. The American game has not collect in this third set.

:49:09.:49:13.

Dalhausser has to go backwards to make the shot.

:49:14.:49:25.

Just on the line. Just on the line. It is a second match point.

:49:26.:49:43.

Alison was enquiring with the referee. This is the second match

:49:44.:49:49.

point. And Brazil are through to the

:49:50.:50:04.

semifinals. 2-1 victory over the United States of America. Dalhausser

:50:05.:50:15.

and Lucena, the number three seeds are

:50:16.:50:19.

out. Alison and Bruno Schmidt walk-through.

:50:20.:50:33.

Lucena and Dalhausser wishing the Brazilians luck for the rest of the

:50:34.:50:39.

tournament. It is not to be for the Americans here in Rio in the men's

:50:40.:50:46.

competition. The number one seeds survive that second set falter to

:50:47.:50:51.

proceed in truth fairly comfortably in that third set. Some memorable

:50:52.:50:56.

rallies as there always are in Beach Volleyball Arena. The majority of

:50:57.:51:01.

them going the way of the Brazilians. They both face a Dutch

:51:02.:51:07.

payer in the semifinal. The winning payer will sign a

:51:08.:51:27.

earlier on. We were hoping to bring you some action from the ceiling.

:54:30.:54:34.

Because of the conditions, all this action was brought to a standstill.

:54:35.:54:44.

Those medal races that were planned have been cancelled. We will bring

:54:45.:54:47.

you news when they will be scheduled again. Badminton for us now. Action

:54:48.:54:55.

in the Men's Doubles. We have class Langridge and Marcus LH -- Chris

:54:56.:55:03.

Langridge and Marcus Ellis. Taking on opponents from Japan. The first

:55:04.:55:07.

game went to the Brits. We will join at the start of the second.

:55:08.:55:18.

He got it done in there Endo and Hayakawa do defend splendidly but

:55:19.:55:51.

Chris Langridge was persistent. In the background is the two

:55:52.:56:06.

Russians that one at the all England tournament earlier in the year.

:56:07.:56:12.

Surprise winners of that one. Nobody saw that coming.

:56:13.:56:25.

It is a very hot day outside and the sweat is pouring off the players. It

:56:26.:56:37.

is a 10,000 seater pavilion. It is very warm inside.

:56:38.:56:47.

There is a real turnaround now. It is like they have found their rhythm

:56:48.:56:56.

against the Japanese and are up to that temple now. Fully alerted to

:56:57.:57:02.

their patterns of play. It seems as if they are looking a

:57:03.:57:20.

little bit forlorn at the moment after dropping that opening game

:57:21.:57:23.

after that seemed they had nailed it on as a win. There is an air of

:57:24.:57:29.

despondency about the blue team. I am sure they will be back. Can the

:57:30.:57:43.

Brits keep striking? Ever after rarer from Endo and Hayakawa. --

:57:44.:57:44.

ever after error. Four success of points. They

:57:45.:57:56.

finished off the first game in style as well.

:57:57.:58:14.

They have got a long way to come back now. It is a start.

:58:15.:58:21.

Psychologically that was really good from the Japanese. It was a shout,

:58:22.:58:31.

trying to kick-start their campaign. They had been muffled by these two.

:58:32.:58:37.

It is the first Olympics of Endo and Hayakawa since they have achieved so

:58:38.:58:39.

much. Again, terrific communication and

:58:40.:59:14.

once more it is Ellis that fires it down. Brilliant play, absolutely

:59:15.:59:18.

brilliant. On the front foot throughout and did not let up.

:59:19.:59:30.

The four point game, how good are they at front running?

:59:31.:59:47.

They have got to keep it going. There is only one player in it at

:59:48.:59:53.

the moment. The Brits are racing away with this. Muscling their way

:59:54.:00:01.

through nicely, spreading the play, keeping the Japanese guessing. They

:00:02.:00:04.

can get the rhythm against this British player right now. They are

:00:05.:00:09.

in a rich vein of form. The Japanese patiently weathering

:00:10.:00:40.

the storm, the newer their window of opportunity would arrive.

:00:41.:01:01.

Now it is the Japanese struggling on serve, they've not got a point in

:01:02.:01:08.

the second game on serve. Only one a couple against them. Robertson and

:01:09.:01:11.

Hoy must be delighted. It is a matter of such magnitude,

:01:12.:01:50.

and they've been in the quarterfinals of the World

:01:51.:01:52.

Championships before, but no further. An enormous moment here,

:01:53.:01:57.

can they somehow get across the finish line the right side?

:01:58.:02:16.

Langridge quick to get across, was key to quick? -- was key to quick.

:02:17.:02:43.

They were always on top in the rally and in the end the power of with

:02:44.:02:55.

this brings it home. They are mixing the lines of attack really nicely

:02:56.:03:02.

into changing the directions. -- and just changing. Still, the four point

:03:03.:03:06.

cushion. An apology from LS. It is a game of

:03:07.:03:37.

milliseconds and millimetres. So little between victory and defeat.

:03:38.:03:38.

The margin is so minimal. The leader back to four, the

:03:39.:04:14.

Japanese just cannot make inroads. It is rather like the reverse role

:04:15.:04:17.

in the opening game with the British play catch up but now Endo still up

:04:18.:04:28.

against it. You can feel them keeping the menacing presence in the

:04:29.:04:32.

game, highly decorated having been ranked to in the world a couple of

:04:33.:04:36.

years ago in June. They are ever dangerous.

:04:37.:05:06.

More and more spectators are being drawn to this court because they

:05:07.:05:10.

sensed an upset. What are rally. Earlier on, and real

:05:11.:06:33.

defence from Rendell and Hayakawa and they get their reward. And a

:06:34.:06:37.

smile from higher calibre, he knew this was a pivotal time, probably

:06:38.:06:44.

the longest rally of the match and Ellis Shang kings last shot. That it

:06:45.:06:51.

was the longest rally, 73 shots. In under one minutes.

:06:52.:06:59.

Ellis is in so quickly. He has been a real powerhouse. This is always

:07:00.:07:26.

what we see, Chris is very tidy with the tight-knit shots and excellent

:07:27.:07:32.

and Ellis comes in and believes the point and it is the contrast in the

:07:33.:07:35.

way that they play that is the reason why they Juhl so well, they

:07:36.:07:42.

have fantastic communication and you can see Langridge shouting, come on

:07:43.:07:45.

Marcus and forcing him on, to reflect. They were in a really

:07:46.:07:51.

difficult group, they did so well to get out of it, Langridge and Ellis,

:07:52.:07:58.

the key win against the number C three -- number three seed, the

:07:59.:08:03.

Koreans. Now here they are against number two in the world. And their

:08:04.:08:09.

front runners and holding on really well. Five point cushion at the

:08:10.:08:18.

mid-game break. That that group, is a great chronic and Fach and took

:08:19.:08:23.

the game for ball and Morgenstern, saw a really strong showing in that

:08:24.:08:24.

group. They have achieved so much in their

:08:25.:08:49.

two years together, these two. Back support tightened up, this would be

:08:50.:08:55.

out of all recognition if they could get through to the semifinal of the

:08:56.:08:56.

Olympic Games. Again, miraculous defence but Ellis

:08:57.:09:47.

will not be denied. He is taking over this match. Bullying his way

:09:48.:09:54.

through every point is so gripping, I cannot take my eyes off the

:09:55.:09:57.

screen, it is such a compelling watch.

:09:58.:10:20.

Well he cannot make it every time, it just seems like he can.

:10:21.:10:29.

It is a lovely blend of soft and touch around the forecourt and

:10:30.:10:36.

bullying, menacing presence from the backcourt.

:10:37.:11:00.

Well left. It was a difficult shot control.

:11:01.:11:35.

They've been a little careless on serve. Yes, there is a disturbing

:11:36.:11:43.

sense of calm focus in the Japanese camp but they've missed by

:11:44.:11:45.

increments every now and then. So quick to see the" and just put it

:11:46.:12:16.

in their beautifully. The cross is sublime, look how quick he was ?2.

:12:17.:12:30.

Wonderful finish. -- he was to punce. The lead stretches to six.

:12:31.:12:40.

They are very nearly there. -- pounce.

:12:41.:13:06.

Good try from behind the back. It has been breathtaking badminton at

:13:07.:13:15.

its best. I think this last one was a bit of a shank, so Chris could not

:13:16.:13:24.

quite get a read on it. There had a double take at that one.

:13:25.:13:41.

They have spent more time on the grandest of stages twice, super

:13:42.:13:59.

series event, of course. There used to turning matches like this around.

:14:00.:14:24.

Hope springing again for the Japanese, just beginning to eat into

:14:25.:14:32.

the lead. From six points it is down to four.

:14:33.:14:47.

It is so wasteful. A clever idea, the execution not, just spilling

:14:48.:14:52.

over the backline. Just when they started to get things

:14:53.:15:10.

going, that happened. It is in, again, super rally. Kate

:15:11.:15:52.

-- great defence from Ellis and Chris Langridge.

:15:53.:16:04.

The lead is still four points. The court is drenched in sweat, 34

:16:05.:16:15.

degrees outside and it must be nearly that inside. It must feel

:16:16.:16:18.

that way for the players. They do not want to turn up the air

:16:19.:16:23.

conditioning in case it causes too much drift. They were concerned

:16:24.:16:30.

about this, they drift in the hall, before the badminton started but

:16:31.:16:33.

there has not been too many complaints.

:16:34.:16:56.

Still the lead narrows. Can they hang on?

:16:57.:17:53.

He just missed. Another superhuman effort from the Brits. It was on the

:17:54.:18:05.

racket. And they had to change the direction. He has had great results

:18:06.:18:10.

from that but just went wide of the doubles line. It is down to two now.

:18:11.:18:23.

Utterly focused, these two. Deep-seated belief. They had a

:18:24.:18:36.

dreadful start to this second game when they did seem to be all at sea.

:18:37.:18:42.

In the last couple of minutes, they look to be a different proposition.

:18:43.:18:50.

It is going to be mighty tough. For Ellis and Chris Langridge to hang

:18:51.:18:51.

on. This is the key point right now. It is all Endo and Hayakawa. They

:18:52.:19:54.

were 15-10 up and the lead has evaporated so quickly. They need to

:19:55.:20:01.

take the time and somehow regroup as it is two men on a mission in blue.

:20:02.:20:07.

How can they stop the momentum that is firmly with the Japanese now?

:20:08.:20:18.

Great choice and great execution from Chris Langridge. It was a

:20:19.:20:27.

straight net shot from the top draw from Chris Langridge. Wonderful

:20:28.:20:28.

hands. What it does for the Japanese when

:20:29.:20:43.

you play soft shots like that, they do not know where to base

:20:44.:20:46.

themselves, the poor short on the course. -- deep or short on the

:20:47.:20:54.

court. They have been bullied by the Chris Langridge smash. Can the run

:20:55.:20:59.

was something here and put together some points back-to-back?

:21:00.:21:23.

Super finish. The bulk of the work from Ellis but Chris Langridge with

:21:24.:21:29.

the finish. That came down on the right type of

:21:30.:21:45.

Hayakawa and in the end, Chris Langridge with the Finnish Andy Reid

:21:46.:21:47.

is back to two. They have put a stop to the

:21:48.:21:53.

momentum. He managed to get Chris Langridge

:21:54.:22:51.

away from the net and the Japanese are back on level. There was a loud

:22:52.:22:54.

cry from them on the penultimate point. At the sharp end of the game,

:22:55.:23:00.

they are acquitting themselves very well.

:23:01.:23:26.

They continued to West point. It may turn out to be crucial. We have seen

:23:27.:23:33.

some service faults from the Japanese team.

:23:34.:24:23.

Another monster rally. Chris Langridge again with the punishment.

:24:24.:24:33.

It was a blistering point from both teams. Incredible, spreading the

:24:34.:24:41.

court well. Chris Langridge sticking the knife in, closing the net down.

:24:42.:24:54.

Two points away. Can they hold their nerve and keep that kind of form

:24:55.:24:55.

going? One at a time, gestures Chris

:24:56.:25:03.

Langridge. That was expensive. Three points for

:25:04.:25:29.

the semifinal of the Olympic Games for Marcus Ellis and Chris

:25:30.:25:30.

Langridge. It is out. And the Brits are

:25:31.:26:37.

through. And they look so confident at the end. What a result.

:26:38.:26:46.

That was unbelievable from Marcus Ellis and Chris Langridge. They will

:26:47.:26:53.

now play the Chinese pair in the next round, the semifinals. Fu got

:26:54.:27:05.

gold in London in 2012. The other already gone above the world ranking

:27:06.:27:09.

and they could go further. I should expand why I am late. Apologies to

:27:10.:27:14.

our loyal BBC four friends, I did not oversleep. I have been too

:27:15.:27:24.

British house today which is 20 minutes that way to interview two

:27:25.:27:31.

medal winners from the games, Justin Rose who talked about what event to

:27:32.:27:37.

win the golf Gold Medal and he also said, he had some text from Iraq or

:27:38.:27:45.

Roy. He said that the British Open he would not watch the golf. -- Rory

:27:46.:27:51.

McIlroy. He did watch the golf and sent He Kexin he did a fantastic

:27:52.:27:55.

job. And I also had a chat with Jessica Ennis-Hill about how Silver

:27:56.:28:00.

Medal in the heptathlon. We will bring you the interviews on the BBC.

:28:01.:28:05.

It was less windy there than it is here. The wind has picked up. It was

:28:06.:28:11.

here on the Copacabana that a beautiful Maria wondered into our

:28:12.:28:18.

lives. The hen party magic that has gone around the world. Somebody told

:28:19.:28:22.

me today it has been watched 11 million times which is ridiculous.

:28:23.:28:26.

She was a lovely lady and has invited us to the wedding which is

:28:27.:28:32.

taking place behind us. Such is the demand we will play you that

:28:33.:28:36.

interview with Maria once again. It should be good fun. We have got some

:28:37.:28:41.

sport to get to. Earlier on we saw the top seeds in the Beach

:28:42.:28:44.

Volleyball Arena from Purcell, Allison and Bruno Schmidt. We will

:28:45.:28:49.

bring you the next game. It is double Dutch for everybody. Should

:28:50.:28:56.

we do the headlines? Hold fire on the Beach Volleyball Arena to re

:28:57.:29:02.

will tell you about what is going on in the ten in Rio.

:29:03.:29:11.

Gold for Charlotte Dujardin in the individual dressage, herself and The

:29:12.:29:17.

leg yield did the business. There was a surprise bronze medal

:29:18.:29:29.

for Sophie Hitchon. Her last will and the competition and look at the

:29:30.:29:32.

delight on her face, she broke her own British record, simply poorer

:29:33.:29:44.

for it 54 metres. -- 70 4.54 metres. The athlete from North Korea won the

:29:45.:29:51.

men's vault in the gymnastics. That was a wonderful salute from the

:29:52.:29:57.

North Korean. And also on the women's beam, the USA athlete was

:29:58.:30:05.

the winner -- was the favourite body when I was from the Netherlands. She

:30:06.:30:09.

was the lady who took the gold medal.

:30:10.:30:13.

On BBC One right now is, some more track cycling. Mark Cavendish in the

:30:14.:30:21.

only, points race so the final event in the omnium, Cavendish was a good

:30:22.:30:28.

chance of a medal, and also he silver medal position just now and

:30:29.:30:31.

Laura Trott is going in the women's omnium but that doesn't finish today

:30:32.:30:36.

and you can continue to see her doing business with Mark Cavendish

:30:37.:30:40.

picking up two points in the next section of that points race. It is

:30:41.:30:44.

all very congregated if you haven't followed it before. It takes about

:30:45.:30:48.

20 minutes but if you go to BBC One you can see the continuation of

:30:49.:30:53.

points race and you can see Mark Cavendish has one Tom Eaves Jurjus

:30:54.:30:56.

of the Tour de France, not telling left disappointed not to be the team

:30:57.:31:00.

pursuit which is why he said he had come home early from the Tour de

:31:01.:31:05.

France but he could win his first Olympic medal. I went early on in

:31:06.:31:09.

each volleyball but now we're going to the volleyball, we will see the

:31:10.:31:20.

Netherlands take on the Netherlands. That's called the beach volleyball

:31:21.:31:25.

arena. That is down the other end of the beach. This is the Dutch taking

:31:26.:31:36.

on the Dutch. Charlie Broome is the man. First set went to Muirsen.

:31:37.:31:51.

Good dig from new middle -- Numedor. Sites which number three. -- side

:31:52.:32:21.

switch. Perhaps the difference between the

:32:22.:32:42.

players, Nummedor 16 attacks, seven successful and Brouwers 16 attacks

:32:43.:32:46.

and 12 successful. It is an ace, comes in from

:32:47.:33:27.

Brouwers. They are level at 5-5. Heavy touch. From Varenhorst.

:33:28.:33:51.

Good luck doesn't work from Nummerdor and again Nummerdor with

:33:52.:33:58.

another excellent date, but it cannot be a third. Meeuwsen puts the

:33:59.:34:06.

spike down the middle. Nummerdor is finally beaten.

:34:07.:34:21.

Good dig from Meeuwsen with the ball behind him.

:34:22.:34:49.

Varenhorst at 6-6 in the second set. Onto the antenna and that is

:34:50.:35:01.

Varenhorst's point? It will be a challenge. First the block and then

:35:02.:35:07.

the antenna is the call. That's have another look. No, think

:35:08.:35:23.

that is under the antenna first, isn't it? You cannot tell from that

:35:24.:35:27.

angle. Look. Maybe he is right. That angle

:35:28.:35:55.

allowing us the chance to see the touch, and it is a successful

:35:56.:36:09.

challenge. It is 7-6 to Meeuwsen. Although it will be Meeuwsen

:36:10.:36:23.

serving. Serves to Varenhorst, who draws the Evra. -- the error.

:36:24.:36:33.

Has just got to get the full touch behind it.

:36:34.:36:42.

Side switch, so Meeuwsen now serving left-to-right. In the blue cap,

:36:43.:36:50.

Brouwer in the White and blue cap. They have got lucky again. Meeuwsen

:36:51.:37:18.

of the net cord, they got the first set of heavy net cord. -- from a.

:37:19.:37:36.

A wild shot from Meeuwsen. And the lead by three now.

:37:37.:38:02.

A time-out called and Nummerdor and Varenhorst need to come up with an

:38:03.:38:20.

answer for these two. Some really interesting points.

:38:21.:38:33.

So, they come out on a 3-point lead, the first place together in 2008 in

:38:34.:38:45.

the Dutch masters in the Hague. It was another three years before the

:38:46.:38:48.

combined to compete as a recognised by the ship on the 2011 world tour.

:38:49.:38:59.

-- partnership. It is art work in progress for Meeuwsen, a slow burner

:39:00.:39:00.

for them. The number 13 seed is when they won

:39:01.:39:24.

the World Championship in 2013. You can see the wind. Taking the flag of

:39:25.:39:31.

the flagpole. World Championship, not the first major title for them

:39:32.:39:34.

but also their first World Championship medal -- not only the

:39:35.:39:37.

first major. dig from Meeuwsen. At the technical

:39:38.:40:36.

time-out Varenhorst and Nummerdor have dragged it up to a 1-point

:40:37.:40:44.

game. They thought they would give themselves a shot, they trailed by

:40:45.:40:47.

three in the first set, so close attendance this time around.

:40:48.:40:59.

These two have no Olympic Games experience, but they did win a

:41:00.:41:18.

bronze medal here, Meeuwsen, in a real mac event at the beginning of

:41:19.:41:23.

this year -- Brooke Rio event. Add a bronze medal in Victoria the week

:41:24.:41:24.

after. Darkness descends upon Rio in day

:41:25.:41:41.

ten. Varenhorst serving. Just too long.

:41:42.:42:01.

This time they don't get the net cord luck.

:42:02.:42:21.

The attempted block, they've realised -- re-established the two

:42:22.:42:26.

point lead. The crosscourt cut short from

:42:27.:42:47.

Nummerdor. And a four point lead at this stage.

:42:48.:43:32.

Not good news for Nummerdor and Varenhorst, they have work to do,

:43:33.:43:45.

having lost the first set. This time it is Varenhorst who comes up with

:43:46.:43:48.

the block. The ball sitting on the net cord before siding to --

:43:49.:43:55.

deciding to go. The side of Meeuwsen, there it drops.

:43:56.:44:09.

Varenhorst enjoying that one, now he has to serve.

:44:10.:44:17.

Nummerdor, brilliant. Everyone is out of position. Meeuwsen makes the

:44:18.:44:40.

block and it is 16-12 now. To the number two seeds, Alexander Brown

:44:41.:44:49.

and Robert Meeuwsen. They've got to start making inroads into this

:44:50.:44:55.

league, Varenhorst and Nummerdor. -- lead.

:44:56.:45:20.

The Dutch fans are enjoying themselves. I wonder if they care

:45:21.:45:29.

who wins. Lovely crosscourt from years. Nummerdor and Varenhorst are

:45:30.:45:37.

starting to stare down a barrel. They have that heartbreaking loss in

:45:38.:45:40.

the final of the World Championships in The Hague in 2015. Nummerdor and

:45:41.:45:50.

Varenhorst were desperate to have a chance to reverse that result. Not

:45:51.:46:01.

only to get one over for losing that World Championship final, but also

:46:02.:46:05.

losing on homes and, a chance for the Dutch team to beat the

:46:06.:46:08.

Brazilians on their home patch. But that is a long way off right now.

:46:09.:46:22.

Too close to the net, and as a result, the momentum of the points

:46:23.:46:30.

swings the other way. Instead of being within two points, they are

:46:31.:46:33.

four behind. Meeuwsen's enjoying himself. That

:46:34.:46:59.

was wide of the mark. They have to win points on the serve now,

:47:00.:47:08.

Nummerdor and Varenhorst. That doesn't help matters. Nummerdor, the

:47:09.:47:18.

most experienced of the pack, came up with that service error.

:47:19.:47:58.

Crosscourt from Brouwer. Nummerdor went the wrong way, and it is four

:47:59.:48:06.

match points. Just finds the line. There is going

:48:07.:48:25.

to be a challenge. Why not? The call was that it hit the line.

:48:26.:48:50.

It was very close. I think that hits the line.

:48:51.:49:12.

Nummerdor needed to find three points on his serve, and he couldn't

:49:13.:49:32.

find any. It's all over. It is Alexander Brouwer and Robert

:49:33.:49:37.

Meeuwsen, the number two seeds from the Netherlands, that get the better

:49:38.:49:40.

of their compatriots, Reinder Nummerdor and Christiaan Varenhorst.

:49:41.:49:52.

So, the second seeds are through. We told you earlier about the top seeds

:49:53.:49:57.

from Brazil also making it through. That has ended perfectly on time for

:49:58.:50:01.

us on BBC Four because we take you to some live hockey. The Team GB

:50:02.:50:04.

women who were perfect in the pool phase, winning five out of five, are

:50:05.:50:09.

taking on Spain in the quarterfinal. First, let's hear from the Team GB

:50:10.:50:23.

captain, Kate Richardson-Walsh. I

:50:24.:50:23.

have been in the senior programme for 17 years. I have changed, the

:50:24.:50:29.

game has changed. In the lead up to Sydney, we were wearing men's polo

:50:30.:50:34.

shirts and massive baggy skirts. It was a real trial to get us all

:50:35.:50:36.

together because we weren't on a full-time programme then. Now, we

:50:37.:50:43.

are full-time. It is night and day, completely different, and to see the

:50:44.:50:48.

transition has been amazing. London 2012 broke a jaw, tears. Reminders

:50:49.:50:56.

of those experiences? When I look back to the London Olympics, it

:50:57.:51:00.

feels like I am watching a movie with someone else in it. It is the

:51:01.:51:04.

real. To fracture my jaw, that is the worst injury I have sustained,

:51:05.:51:08.

touch wood. To have done it in the first game of a home Olympics was

:51:09.:51:14.

the most important thing ever. I watched my team play Korea from a

:51:15.:51:19.

hospital bed. I had had my operation, and I was so calm and so

:51:20.:51:23.

proud, because all the work we had done was there on the pitch. As soon

:51:24.:51:28.

as I was told I was allowed to rejoin the team, we were going for

:51:29.:51:33.

this with our lives. It was an amazing two weeks. You are seen as

:51:34.:51:38.

money for the team. I am a mother hen. I just care, as we all do. We

:51:39.:51:43.

spend so much time with each other. You become so involved with each

:51:44.:51:48.

other's lives that you really care about the person on the pitch and

:51:49.:51:52.

off the pitch and what goes on around her life and their

:51:53.:51:55.

relationships. It is all part and parcel of caring for each other,

:51:56.:51:59.

which makes as tight as a group. Do you consider yourself an ambassador

:52:00.:52:05.

not just for Great Britain hockey, but hockey in general? Absolutely.

:52:06.:52:09.

We know the Olympics is a massive shop window and for hockey, it is a

:52:10.:52:15.

minority sport, so we have to take this opportunity. We are 31 women,

:52:16.:52:20.

all different ages, different backgrounds, different likes and

:52:21.:52:25.

dislikes. We have a range of role models to say, look, it doesn't

:52:26.:52:29.

matter if you're small or tour big or whatever, you can play hockey.

:52:30.:52:34.

That is what we represent. The fourth Olympics. Is it possible this

:52:35.:52:39.

might be the last one for you? Yes. I think it's time. I think people

:52:40.:52:44.

have had enough of me now! I just feel like it's come to a natural

:52:45.:52:50.

end. I am 36. My body still feels good and I love it, but there are

:52:51.:52:55.

challenges ahead for me, but not on the international stage. I am just

:52:56.:52:59.

taking one day at a time and just focusing on that. After that, what

:53:00.:53:06.

will be, will be. That is the insight from the captain. Let's show

:53:07.:53:11.

you the quarterfinal draw. Too much of them have already taken place. If

:53:12.:53:18.

Great Britain do beat Spain, they will face New Zealand in the

:53:19.:53:21.

semifinal. Let's get straight across to Team GB taking on Spain.

:53:22.:53:27.

Katherine Downes is there alongside Mel Clewlow. They face a Spanish

:53:28.:53:31.

side who just made it through into the knockout stages. That's right.

:53:32.:53:35.

If they could hand-pick their opponents, Spain would be who they

:53:36.:53:41.

would have chosen. But we are concerned about the conditions down

:53:42.:53:44.

here, because a vast swathe of hillside to my right on the other

:53:45.:53:47.

side of the road from the Olympic Hockey Centre is a light. We have a

:53:48.:53:52.

massive forest fire not far away. It seems to be blowing closer to the

:53:53.:53:58.

location here. There is an enormous cloud of black smoke billowing

:53:59.:54:02.

across the end of the pitch. I don't know if you can see it. It is a bit

:54:03.:54:07.

hazy in the far corner, and the pitch itself is scattered with black

:54:08.:54:11.

ash that is falling from the sky. Mel, we have seen really bad

:54:12.:54:15.

conditions when we arrived. You were concerned that the match should not

:54:16.:54:19.

go ahead, but it has improved. It is probably worse in the media centre.

:54:20.:54:24.

We spoke to Danny Carey on the way over, and he wasn't concerned. So

:54:25.:54:28.

I'm pleased that the game is going to happen. We will have to see if we

:54:29.:54:32.

can get it finished before the flames reached the Hockey Centre!

:54:33.:54:38.

Dan was saying Spain just managed to squeeze through the group to

:54:39.:54:41.

qualify, but Great Britain have been going great guns. They have had

:54:42.:54:45.

mixed season. Their form has been all over the place, but something

:54:46.:54:49.

has kicked for them at this Olympic Games. They have got it spot on. I

:54:50.:54:54.

covered them before and I came here concerned, but they have picked at

:54:55.:54:58.

the right time and I got five from five, looking like six from six

:54:59.:55:02.

tonight. But Spain have done their homework. They knew which games they

:55:03.:55:06.

were going to lose. They beat Germany in the pool stages, so they

:55:07.:55:10.

will not be a pushover. Let's get over to the game.

:55:11.:55:17.

DAN WALKER: we were here the anthems in a moment. Before we get to the

:55:18.:55:22.

game, let's show you how good Team GB have been in the build-up to

:55:23.:55:25.

tonight's quarterfinal. Here is what they have done so far, five wins

:55:26.:55:38.

from five. Over, backhand goal, an absolute beauty! Great Britain have

:55:39.:55:42.

got there Olympic hockey tournament off to the dream start. Bundle

:55:43.:55:49.

through into the goal by Alex Danson. That will be that. This

:55:50.:55:59.

tournament is starting to hot up. Great Britain have won it! They

:56:00.:56:07.

remain unbeaten in the Olympic tournament so far. Great Britain

:56:08.:56:14.

versus Japan, scored! Great Britain have notched another win. Whoever

:56:15.:56:21.

wins this will go into the quarterfinals. It is a goal for Alex

:56:22.:56:27.

Danson! Maximum points, five wins out of five. Great Britain are the

:56:28.:56:30.

top team in the Olympic tournament at the moment.

:56:31.:56:40.

And now the aunt of Spain. -- the anthem of Spain.

:56:41.:57:23.

Those are the anthems, let's get on with the match. This is a women's

:57:24.:58:17.

hockey quarterfinal, Team GB taking on Spain. Mel Clewlow is alongside

:58:18.:58:25.

Matt Chilton. COMMENTATOR: Good evening,

:58:26.:58:27.

everybody. Smoky atmosphere at Deodoro, with a raging forest fire

:58:28.:58:32.

less than a mile from the pitch tonight. Thankfully, the wind is

:58:33.:58:36.

helping us and keeping the atmosphere clear, but the officials

:58:37.:58:42.

are keeping a close eye on the fire, which is approaching the BMX Centre,

:58:43.:58:49.

I'm told. Great Britain are in white tonight. They will be attacking the

:58:50.:58:56.

goal to our left. Spain are in red, hence the change colours for the GB

:58:57.:59:02.

team. Great Britain are unbeaten so far in the tournament. Five matches

:59:03.:59:07.

played, five wins secured. Australia 2-1, India 3-0. They beat Argentina

:59:08.:59:14.

3-2, 2-0 against Japan. They were expecting more. And then United

:59:15.:59:20.

States went a goal up before Great Britain pegged them back to win 2-1.

:59:21.:59:25.

Now they find themselves in the quarterfinals of the Olympic hockey

:59:26.:59:36.

tournament, facing Spain. Decent crowd in tonight. We have yet to

:59:37.:59:41.

have a full house at Deodoro, but with Argentina playing later, there

:59:42.:59:45.

are plenty of enthusiastic supporters on either side of the

:59:46.:59:51.

field. Kelly Hudson is umpiring this one.

:59:52.:00:01.

She will be joined by another Australian umpire. Under

:00:02.:00:07.

quarterfinal is under

:00:08.:00:08.
