Day 10 BBC Two: 20.00-20.30 Olympics

Welcome back to Rio where we are bringing you live coverage of the

women's beam. Waiting for scores to come out to find out if Simone Biles

still has the lead or not. Here is Matt with the latest.

Yes, she still leads. Sanne Wevers just going through her difficulty

score is there to make sure everything is right. If it is not

what she's expecting, they will put in an appeal. They will. We saw her

in the qualification doing the same and she did protest. She is 24 years

old, she is not a beginner and she knows what she expects from all the

hard work she has done. She scored 15.066 in qualification. What will

she be awarded here and will she go ahead of Simone Biles? If she does,

that will be a very major upset in these championships. A great doubles

in there. Such a different style of gymnastics to Simone Biles. Sam

Wevers uses the spins, jumps and connect them all together. You can

see the judges are in searing they have difficulty value. And we saw

her working it out herself to make sure they get it the same. Someone

watching closely will be her dad who is also her coach. And her twin

sister is also on the team from the Netherlands as well. The Netherlands

have had a great championships. They made the team final. This team is

such an elegant special team. This is the most special gymnast we have

seen. A huge disappointment for Simone Biles, knowing what she is

capable of. Usually, you bring in the human element in a final like

this. It doesn't matter what you doing the training gym. Can you

replicate what you can do in the training gym on a platform like

this? To the first time we have seen her fault at all. She has been so

confident. She has just shown that she has frailties like everybody

else. She has been so super-confident through the

individual and the team final. She already has three gold medals.

Guess, and she could still be within a shot of a medal here. We're just

waiting for this score now. A huge achievement, a special talented

gymnast. You can see her team-mate warming up there, going through her

routine on the floor. You know all the gymnasts now. The timings are

different. She goes well ahead of Simone Biles, Sanne Wevers, and that

will put huge pressure on the gymnasts to follow. That will be one

big score to try and beat. Well, a gymnast who has had a very long wait

indeed is Catalina Ponor. She was Olympic champion in 2004 in Athens.

Four-time European champion, and flying the flag for Romania. There

is no Romanian women's team here, can you believe? Her speciality

teas. A simple mount to get onto the beam. Here is her first connection

coming up. Beautiful style. A half turning

flick. Just missed the connection going into the next element. The

free walkover into the flick layout. No movement there. She will just

miss out on the connection. Better for that than a full.

She holds the handstand. One of only a few gymnasts who actually performs

this element. The compulsory spin that they have to show. There was a

beep so she has to get off within ten seconds and she does with a

double pike and a big step back. Some very big deductions in there

and Eric Spear tells her, Chris? Yes. She comes back into competition

but one of the things that this soap is a cult to do is mentally get that

resilience back once you have been out of competition for some time --

will over the years we have seen Catalina

Ponor soak up the pressure with ease. It was all the air, little

pauses and wobbles. I don't think that will be good enough to go into

the lead. She did not fall but their world wobbles. You have to put your

foot straight down and go into the flip. The dismount was nice and high

but a big step back racked up deductions.

It has been a long wait for the likes of Ponor. Competed as an

individual on the second day of the Olympics. Now we are on day ten. And

talking of long waits, the weight she had before the routine, even

someone as ghastly experience does her, Beth, it doesn't help? It does

not help and it can unnerve a gymnast. Once you stand on the

podium you cannot warm up any elements, you can only shake your

body about and keep warm. You do not want to be rushed getting back up.

And also be rattled by the fact that Simone Biles had the problems she

had. Suddenly, Sanne Wevers is out there. This could be history in the

making for her because by my reckoning, the Netherlands have

never got an Olympic medal on the women's side. That is a huge score

for a beam routine. That was very costly that routine, all the wobbles

and no connections. Sanne Wevers looking to make history. There are

three gymnastics to go. One of them is 16-year-old Laurie Hernandez. She

was part of the team who won gold for the US. She will be desperately

keen to make her mark. You could see she was slightly off.

She fixed the muscles in her body to control that.

She met the beam really well and linked to the jump. Another

acrobatic skills. Five acrobatic skills.

A double pike, very good landing. This will be tight. A medal could

well be on but what colour will it be? I watched Simone Biles all the

way through that and she was cheering her on and living every

moment of that beam routine with Laurie Hernandez. What a team-mate

to have. It is, and such a difficult thing to going from that team

environment to be up there by yourself. To have your team-mate

cheering you on throughout the routine, you can see this was such a

solid routine from beginning to end. In qualification she posted a 6.4

difficulty which was two tenth lower than the Dutch posted in this final.

Fabulous acrobatic skills. A front somersault straight into the jump.

She got a little bit edgy. Only 16 years old. To come off and

perform under that pressure. The coach is still giving her a huge

hug! We were not adding the difficulty

up. She had less wobbles than Sanne Wevers.

The story is very different to what we expected here. I am sure the

story is different to what Simone Biles was expecting as well, but she

is there supporting. She has recovered herself very well. One of

the most impressive things about her is what a joyful gymnast Shias. She

took a few moments to be disappointed but put it behind her

and supported her team-mate and give a smile for the camera! Such a

technical piece of apparatus this. It is so intricate to judge this?

Yes, and there were so many connections and the judges had to

decide if there was a pause. We have seen in a lot of these finals one or

two tenth can make the difference between an Olympic medal and not.

Her face says it all, it is not quite enough, but silver at the

moment. What a turn up. The American women had looked invincible, but it

beam. This really is a big surprise. Two gymnasts left to go. The last

one will take the roof off will Flavia Saraiva from Brazil. But

before she comes out, this is Marine Boyer, another 16-year-old here. She

was second at the Europeans earlier this year.

A very difficult connection, very well executed. A small little

wobble. There are two jobs which are

compulsory to show the judges. The dismount has to count towards

the top eight elements. And here it goes, the round off into the double

pike. A good little landing, just a small step back. There were a few

errors in that routine which the judges will deduct four. She makes

things look easy though. She has got a natural power. And actually quite

tall for a gymnast. A lot of gymnasts in this final using the

round off straight somersault and really nicely performed. Easy

splits. This was the place she almost came

to grief. You could see her looking at the beam. Good control on the two

spins. I can tell you that Laurie Hernandez

is just checking with the difficulty, she has put in an

enquiry so we will have to wait a little bit longer. She was awarded

6.4 two Wevers 6.6. That was the difference. Hernandez actually had a

higher execution score than Wevers. She did wobble a bit left but the

routine was not as difficult. Obviously, the American delegation

felt they had been harshly done by an the difficulty scores. So the

enquiry goes on. The judges, the jury look at the video and decide if

they would do anything different. She did put in a 6.4 in qualifying

and in the heat. There are a few different accommodations they do,

the front somersault into the jump, and you would have to look back at

the various beam routine is she's done throughout this competition.

Also things like one of the last elements, if it didn't touch her

head they would put the value down. So, Marine Boyer's score is in and

it is 14.6, she's into fourth place, which guarantees Sanne Wevers a

silver. It's been projected, you can see that on the screen. Sanne Wevers

now guaranteed at least a silver, making history as the first female

gymnast ever to win an Olympic medal in gymnastics from the Netherlands.

There is a real chance here for Flavia Saraiva from Brazil, because

Brazil have also never had an Olympic medal on the women's side.

The score for bronze is 14.7 33. That would match Simone Biles. A

really sharp little gymnast. This is a very important opening series, two

lay out somersaults, well negotiated.

Oh! She's held it but that will be a deduction for the wobble. Nice spin,

very elegant, very sharp in her performance. Lovely height on the

jumps. And this is the switch leg leap to

touch their head, and her head was well back, there. She did such their

head on both those jumps. Super high front somersault, just a little pop

back to gain control. Free walk over, free walk over, side

somersault, very little wobble but she managed to do that series. In

comes the big dismount. It was a great effort. It was a great effort,

but not without deduction, and we think it will not be enough for

Flavia Saraiva to get into the medals, so we will have to get

confirmation of the judges but we think that Sammy Weathers's score

from the Netherlands, the first ever female gymnast to get a medal, but

now it's a gold and we think Lauren Hernandez will be in with a shout of

silver and we think Simone Biles will hang on for bronze. But we wait

for domination, it will be very close. There weren't any Foles, a

couple of wobbles, but she made her connections. She scored 15.133 in

qualification. It wasn't clear than that, -- cleaner than that but was

it cleaner than 14.7? We've seen three Olympic gymnastics medals for

Brazil, they've just gone mental, so we will just have to sit and wait.

Well, Flavia Saraiva just make sure everything is right. I don't think

she can quite believe it. I don't think she will challenge and Sammy

Weathers. She's been such a consistent gymnast over this vital

and impressed time and time again on the beam. It's great to see a

different style, isn't it? It's very difficult, those turns and those

leaps, the consistency is just as hard as the actual acrobatic

somersaults, I think she's the only gymnast that uses the triple spin on

the beam, so credit to her for putting that different style of

gymnastics together. The question is, are the judges going to give a

medal to Simone Biles or two Flavia Saraiva?

Well, this crowd watched Zanetti get a silver for Brazil and rings and

hour ago, are we seeing this little firecracker of a gymnast get a medal

here? Sammy Weathers waiting for confirmation that she is the Olympic

champion. Laurie Hernandez guaranteed a medal as well. But will

Simone Biles? Will she get bronze? Well, it's right down to the wire,

here. We talk about finals being won out right. They've waited a long

time for this final. The last one of the day. So, the Netherlands weight

with bated breath, as does Sammy weather is. Laurie Hann and as new

the door was open for that gold after what happened to her

team-mate. Just waiting. Any second now... For Simone Biles. There was

talk that the USA might take every gold medal in this Championships

hasn't gone their way so far. Russia took the bars gold. We understand

Marine Boyer has now put in an inquiry committee has a score of

14.6 at the moment with a score of -- with a difficulty of 6.1.

As it stands, then, Sammy Weathers is in the lead. Simone Biles hanging

on in there in that bronze medal position with a score of 14.733.

We're just waiting for Flavia Saraiva's score to come in but there

has been an inquiry, so this could take some time. Come back to us

shortly. Agro studio good advice, Matt. Whatever happens, it seems

that if the Netherlands's six gold medal of these Games. We have been

seeing the fifth of six races in the men's omnium. Mark Cavendish, they

have two one half laps to wind up before they put in the fastest 250

metres that they can. As we join it, Dylan Kennett has the fastest time,

Lasse Norman Hansen of Denmark, and a going in reverse order so you will

Disastrous elimination race for Viviani and he would be bitterly

disappointed if it cursed him an Olympic dog medal. He is fighting to

get back on level terms. He's looked really good in all of the event so

far apart from that disastrous effort in the 11 nation race. An

all-out sprint over one lap of the track. A tenth of a second down at

the first time check, gone out a bit here, and Hanson's time, second

quickest! 12.832. Finish nicely, but the one we interested in really is

Mark Cavendish. We're hearing from the camp that he is expected to go

inside that magic 13 second marker, at the question is by how much.

Suggesting maybe a 12.8 four Mark Cavendish. He's introduced the crowd

and there is the raw. I'm hoping for a bit more than 12.8. If he could

scrape a 12.7, that could make all the difference here. Mark Cavendish

going into this penultimate round of the omnium in third place, less than

a lap away from his flying lap of 250 metres, the greatest road man

sprinter of all time, needs to sprint for his life here on the

boards in Rio and here we go, Cavendish under way in his sprint!

Around the bottom of the track into the back straight. Powers away to

our left, into the finishing straight, up towards the line,

12.793! Second quickest. Well, he will have to be happy with that. A

personal best yet again for the Manxman, buy some considerable

margin. Two good riders behind him but even if they did go quicker,

which is certainly not guaranteed, that's a very good performance from

him. That will be an excellent result from Cavendish. Now, Budat

France is out there on the boards, the penultimate rider to go. Also

not keen on this discipline, 14th at the worlds, there were not expecting

a massive amount from him but he is one of the riders on form and rode

well particularly in the elimination race. Good technique. He looks much

better here than he did at the World Championships earlier in the year.

Now Boudat of France, 12.506 the quickest time. He is up the pace at

the moment. All over the track and it's costing him distance. Costing

him distance and places and that will cost him points as well. Eighth

fastest, he has lost ground an Mark Cavendish. Those two were level on

points in second and third going into this penultimate round. This is

where his background of Tour de France riding in the past few weeks

probably starts to help. His body is used to having to recover quickly as

fatigue sets in, and as the competition goes on he will probably

feel stronger than the rest. The last man to go, the Italian, Elia

Viviani. He does like this one, he won this particular discipline at

the omnium in London. He has been on for more this conversation and he

noticed track craft. A very fine performer over a number of seasons.

Not just because he is in the lead but the way he is riding, he is the

man to beat in this competition. You can see the balance in his posture,

track craft is great, doesn't come down too quickly, sprints down the

home straight and starts the clock. We know he has a fair old turn up a

sand he's hurt and be showing it here, Viviani. Losing a bit of

ground, though, and over the line with the second fastest time.

12.660. Mark Cavendish third fastest. That moves him up from the

bronze medal position into silver overall with one race to go. Viviani

in the bronze medal position... All to play for in the points race

which we will breed bringing you later. Let's head back to the

gymnastics and the latest, Matt? COMMENTATOR: Sammy Weathers is the

theme Olympic champion. Simone Biles does hang on for bronze. Flavia

Saraiva finishes in fifth, with Marine Boyer in fourth place. Lauren

Hernandez gets the silver. There you can see the full finishing

order. Congratulations to Sanne Wevers. The beam is ten centimetres

wide, the same width as Chris Foy Mashud -- Chris Hoy's mobile phone.

Just some of Mark Cavendish's performance so far, can he win the

omnium with the final points race? Yes, I think he can. Great

performance in that event, to get top three. Viviani is going to be

the biggest threat but the event is heavily weighted towards the end,

the points race. It's all to play for but it's not going to be easy.

It's a hard race to call but he has a great chance. We will see more of

Mark Cavendish and we will also see Laura Trott in the early stages of

her omnium challenge, trying to defend that vital. In sailing, the

men's laser race has been postponed due to today it is all that wind is

basically over the land and You're coming across as, frankly,

ridiculous.
