Day 12 BBC Two: 20.00-20.30 Olympics

Good evening and welcome to all Olympics fans joining us for a

half-hour programme on BBC Two where we will show some of the best of the

action from today. It's steaming hot in Brazil so we're trying to stay in

the shade. Let's give an idea of what's coming up. Between now and

8:30pm will show football highlights, Brazil against Honduras,

then basketball, men's quarterfinal action, France against Spain.

Volleyball, also quarterfinal stages, USA against Poland. Later,

handball, just a brilliant sport to watch. Men's quarterfinals, Germany

against Qatar. After making a shockingly disappointing start to

the football tournament with two goalless draws, Brazil are suddenly

starting to find form, winning their quarterfinal against Colombia 2-0

today, against Honduras. Here is how they got on. The most successful

football nation in history. They may have won the World Cup five times

but so far and Olympic gold medal has eluded them. What a start. The

opener there already. Any nerves they might have had has dissipated,

Neymar bundles it into the net, he's taken a bit of a blow for his

troubles. Palacio in the back, Neymar's onto

him. He did so well to it, Neymar. Honduras have tried to stop Brazil

anyway they can. It isn't working. Again, the offside flag stays down.

It's 2-0. And Gabriel Jesus adds to the early Neymar goal, giving Brazil

the kind of lead they have merited. The 200 million watching at home,

what they would have wished for. Game over! Gabriel Jesus with his

second, Brazil with the third. Honduras looking just as vulnerable

as they did before the double substitution made at half-time.

Brazil corner, no marking, it's number four. This time it's the man

with the same number of goals as the number on his shirt. It is joy

unbridled in the Maracana. This side are going to be in the

gold medal final, playing like this, looking for number five. It's

exquisite to watch, Luan makes it a rout. Penalty. Challenge from

behind. The referee says, I have no choice. Neymar started the scoring.

Neymar completes the scoring. Brazil 6-0 Honduras. And you can probably

hear 200 million people right across this huge country all celebrating as

one. Fantastic win for Brazil, they are

in the final, they meet either Nigeria or Germany. That match is

live. It's in the early stages, but it's live on the Red Button.

Handball was one of the big hits of London 2012, it took place at the

Copper Box. Here it's in a similar structure, more of a brown box

called the Future Arena. It's fun, a mix of basketball and football.

Height is very important, you need to come down with a ball to score

goals, five players on the pitch at any one time, hopefully this will

give you an idea of why it's fun to watch.

The Olympic quarterfinal between Germany and Qatar leaves here in the

Future Arena. -- begins. Germany in all-white playing from right to

left. These two sides met in the quarterfinal of the World

Championships last year, Qatar came out on top then. Who will be through

to the semis in Rio? European against Asian champions here. The

defence specialist pushing forward. The defence to week. Vida gets his

first goal. The 14th goal of the tournament for

Fabian Vida. Now Qatar with their first attack. -- for Fabian Wiede.

To the left, then back into Capote. They've done this a few times,

started with their main weapon of last year, Markovic. The goalkeeper

is up to that one. Tenth in the Bundesliga, but moving to

powerhouses keel in the new season. -- Kiel. The number 25 comes onto

the court in the centre back position. There is the long shot

from Hafner. Germany still with possession. Wiede. Score of the only

goal so far. Germany 1-0 Qatar. Interesting that he would normally

would happily move to the other side, where he plays with Hanover.

Two in on the line as they push in. Staying as a second line player for

the moment. Straight on the near post, nicely done. Having to work

really hard. Under an awful lot of pressure there. Now Qatar come

forward again. Capote into his standard left back position. The

French born back player get his first of the game. Qatar get there

first of the game. They trailed Germany 2-1 three and a half minutes

into this 30 minute first half. They are waiting for Hafner to come back

on, Germany will start to build again. The Qataris might have been

studying the German wingers who stayed in and wait for their

opportunities. Gensheimer squashed the defence and left them narrow.

They are finding a way through the middle, through the line player or

through the Hanover back player, Hafner. Off by Drux, Hafner inside,

finds the back of the net. It's fair to say Sigurdsson is a master of

deception. They probably thought they would play hard on the wings,

but they are playing hard down the middle so far. The French player

goes in on the line. A bit of space for Capote to come in. He's got such

a huge shot. Given far too much space by the German defence. Drux

into Wiede, get it out wide as the whistle goes. Qatar need to get into

their stride. At least Capote, it's not too well organised at the back,

as they make as substitution between attack and defence. The number four

who played for Egypt in the 2008 Olympic Games goes off, in his place

comes the number 14. They try to stretch the defence and allow space

for Capote to. To the back of the net, Qatar drawn level, Capaldi

finding the space. -- Capote a. Germany then surged ahead with some

fantastic finishing power shots, waning in from right and left. Plus

some flair. Anyone who can count can tell it seven aside, not five aside.

We rejoin later in the second half, Qatar now 11 adrift.

COMMENTATOR: Capote rattled the bar. Another break. Wiede again, it's a

rout. Germany 34-22 Qatar. As we approach the final minute. It looks

as though it's going to be Germany who progress to the Olympic

semifinal. Long ball to Wiede, brings it down and slotted home.

Great shotgun he dummied the first one. His arm came up, flicked the

ball underneath, a bit of showboating to finish off. Fifth

goal of the match for Wiede. Germany went back, guess what's happening,

fast breaks, it's Wiede. Did it going? It didn't. Of the underside

of the bar and bounced off the line. Because he didn't do a trick shot.

There's a lesson for you. It was quite nice, the last one, I have to

say. Only their second fast break out of ten. Wolff has had real

influence in the defence. Blazed over by Markovic. Thinking about

going for a fast break again. Everybody not back in position. One

more chance maybe for Germany to bag another goal. Wiede... Or are they

just going to play out the plot? They can't be bothered any more,

Germany, because they have won by 12 goals. And the Germans are into the

Olympic semifinal. They expected a tough match against Qatar, they did

have to work hard, but in the end it ended up being very, very

comfortable for them. It finishes here in the men's handball

for Germany, taking the lead against Nigeria in the football semifinals.

Germany taking a step towards the gold medal match. They would meet

Brazil. Got beaten by them in the semifinals of the World Cup. Here in

Brazil football is worshipped, but in terms of participation the most

popular sport is volleyball. They play it on the beach, in a park

anywhere they can put up a net and pat the ball. When you see it at the

top level there is no patting about it, it's serious, as you will see

here. Two teams have finished their warm

up, the fans hoping for a thriller. As a neutral, those of you watching

the hopeful that as well, five sets, as both teams go at it hammer and

tongs to book their place in the semifinals. It's Poland in red and

white, serving the USA in blue, receiving this from men's

quarterfinal action from the Olympic Games. The USA who get off to the

best start, they are on the board. That just goes to show right from

the off that at this level it isn't serving, it's spiking. What was

impressive to me was the one-handed set that set it up, it is athletic,

its great wherewithal. It prolonged the play that could have resulted in

overpass. Still looking for what they need to take the set. That is a

huge throw-down. So impressive how quickly they can identify someone's

arm swing slowdown or something tipped them off that says this is

not coming. Each, and he delays just a bit and look for the SWAT.

He overcooked that and now the USA have four match points.

It is all over. The USA win the set 25-20, the match 3-0. It is the USA

going into the semifinals. They handle that so relieved. Sander was

incredible. Poland did not know where it was going at any given

time. Shoji doing a great job at the back court handling ball control.

You can see it has been a better day for water-skiing and sailing. It has

been so reliable until today and for Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark, they

will have to wait another 24 hours to finish off the job and collect

that gold medal. They are in good shape and good spirits. I spoke to

them earlier and they are resigned to the fact of another sleepless

night before they get the medal. Thanks for the update. I am sorry

you will not see any racing. One of the big tickets here, because it

goes long into the night, is basketball. Hugely popular and the

reason many people come to the Olympic Park. USA favourites but

Spain could challenge them. Basketball, five on the court at any

France and join it in the fourth quarter of this quarterfinal.

Look at the difference in the two point shooting. One of the big

differences in the game. Tony Parker for three and he hits it. The

superstar. Still showing he has got it. He will just be playing the last

minutes of any Olympic basketball, you would think. Hard to see him

coming back four years from now. The frustration is evident in his face.

-- out. We can draw parallels between the first quarterfinal and

this. The way Australia were able to attack early in the game and put

their opponents under pressure. It appears Spain would come out and use

the Australian blueprint. The foul given against Lauvergne was for

being unsportsmanlike. That might be the last time... It

is. He is out. That is two.

When it rains it pours and it is raining 3-pointers as Alex Abrines

comes in the game. He will be another one reporting to Oklahoma

City Thunder. What a reject by Gomes.

Up to de Colo. Already it is getting farcical. As this one counts down.

As I said earlier, it does appear that Spain have used Australia's

blueprint in the way they were able to dispose of Romania and do a

similar job of France and they will advance to the semifinals.

Maybe you can question the rotation for France. Maybe they wanted to

stay big. Kahudi is a small forward. They had

a good first half. While they have not been able to match it in pace,

it has shown on the scoreboard. The three in the corner by de Colo.

This is what they needed earlier. That shooting. Because the three

gave Spain a lead and once they had the lead, it was almost inexorable,

the way they dominated the French. Who are they going to give it to.

They give it to Hernangomez. The young man has had an excellent

match. He is showing his coach he is a great back-up for Pau Gasol. Seven

minutes on the court for him. 18 points. Nine of 12 shooting and six

rebound is. You will take that from your back-up centre any day. --

a quarterfinal exit from the 2016 Olympics. And Spain can celebrate.

Because they are going to the semifinals, where they will meet

either the USA or Argentina. Tony Parker's Olympic career is over, you

would think. As we can stand the clock, it is

Spain defeating France, 92 - 67. You have seen in the past half-hour
